Working Kitties Field Report
On the job 24/7
By Ellen Snortland Pasadena Weekly ColumnistRocking on my porch, my dear friend Michelle and I looked to our right and saw Tuck, a feral kitty, come for some kibble. We were both in tears because he had been AWOL for a few weeks. “We had cats at our family bakery. My dad created Ezekiel bread, and an organic bakery will not use poison for rodents, that’s for sure,” she said. “The cats were all feral: some friendly, others not so much.” Michelle’s been the greatest cheerleader in my project to reduce our rodent population without using poison.
You may own a small business in Downtown Los Angeles, or a warehouse, live near a restaurant, or have a home in the San Gabriel Valley. No matter where you live, you’ve probably seen a rat or two and wondered how to combat them safely. Working cats to the rescue! Even Disneyland in Anaheim uses working cats for this purpose since, as they say, “There’s only room for one rodent here!”
In early March, I wrote a column about working cats and that I’d applied to have two feline rodent hunters for our home in Altadena. A week later, Rosa of kittybungalow.org and I stood on my front porch; she had come to set up the enclosure for the two cats that I’d I renamed Nip and Tuck. After I told Rosa I had already written a column, she said, “I hope you do a follow-up column; we need the exposure and the donations to spay and neuter more kittens.” I promised I would, and here it is.
I’m happy to report that we’ve seen a marked decrease in rodent activity since the kitties moved here. Hurrah!
I was already fervently against the use of poison. I became even more committed as I witnessed a life-and-death drama via Facebook during the darkest depths of the COVID-19 pandemic. My friend Bonnie Schindler witnessed a mature owl’s horrific struggle against an internal injury. Bonnie said, “The crows were dive-bombing Owliver, the name we gave the owl.” It had all the markers of rat poisoning. The Schindlers were able to get Owliver to the Wildlife Care of Southern California (wildlifecareofsocal.org). It turned out Owliver was in the throes of death from a parasite that had dug into his brain behind his eyes.
That Owliver wasn’t poisoned doesn’t matter as much as having the image of the magnificent winged apex predator struggling seared on my brain forever. Birds of prey are especially vulnerable to rat poison: hawks, eagles and owls. This is a double tragedy because the fewer birds of prey, the more rats can proliferate. Other animals and our pets can eat rat poison or the poisoned rats themselves. Not good! Yet we see rat control trucks around here a lot. Stop it! If Disney can use feral cats, so can you. Seriously.
Naïve as I am, I thought feral kitty fostering would be a noncontroversial project. As it turns out, someone I love and respect dearly took umbrage over our feral kitty adoption, and they weren’t the only ones. They were concerned about cats killing birds. I also care about birds … and not being overrun by rampant rat populations. The fewer unplanned litters, the fewer smaller birds are taken by starving cats. As it is, I feed our feral kitties once a day. They return because they know they can get a good square meal. Meanwhile, their very presence discourages rats.
Back to Michelle and me. She knew that I was so sad … I haven’t seen the little Russian blue female, Nip, for three weeks. She might have become a link in the food chain, or as Michelle and my husband, Ken, comfort me, “She might have found a better deal in another yard.”
Speaking of Ken, we now have the benefit of kitties without setting off the intense asthma attack he gets whenever he’s around felines. I’ve never seen a face swell up and breathing become so difficult in another human being as I did when Ken visited a home but had forgotten to ask the owner if they had cats, as he would have stayed outside.
Because we have a large property, I applied for and got another two kitties from Kitty Bungalow: Charm School for Wayward Cats. Michelle is so pleased as she is a feline fan extraordinaire. Here’s to sterilized feral kitties and their war on rodents — and poison — which benefits us all.

The Future of Pasadena
Mayor Gordo seeks 2nd term
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorVictor Gordo moved to Pasadena when he was 5 years old. The oldest of six kids, he grew up attending Pasadena public schools and delivering newspapers throughout the community from age 9 to 17. He worked evenings and weekends at Ranchero’s Mexican Restaurant, alongside his father, to help bring money home, and became the first in his family to go to college when he enrolled at Pasadena City College.
He’s now running for a second term as the mayor of Pasadena, a role that he described as the honor of a lifetime.
“There simply is no greater people or city anywhere in the world,” Gordo said. “You can’t grow up a monolingual Span-
ish-speaking immigrant, growing up in, first, the garage … and become mayor without the help of a lot of people. I was very fortunate that everyone from teachers to Little League and high school coaches took an interest in me and helped me be successful as a kid growing up in Pasadena.
“As a young man, I had the great benefit again of the help and guidance of a lot of people. I can never repay it, but I can certainly try and do my part to ensure that Pasadena is as great as we all know it can be and must be for generations of future Pasadenans.”
Gordo is currently the general counsel and secretary treasurer for the Laborers’ International Union of North America and the longest-serving president of the Rose
Bowl Operating Company. He has worked for nearly 19 years as a Pasadena city councilmember with a focus on issues like overdevelopment, government transparency crime and housing.
Since being elected in 2020, Gordo has had to navigate through past and ongoing issues like the COVID-19 pandemic, economic uncertainty and crises in housing, homelessness and mental health with an ever-changing leadership team. He’s worked with three city managers, four police chiefs, two planning directors, three water and power general managers and two fire chiefs in two years. Today, he expressed a sense of stability with a replenished leadership team including City Manager Miguel Márquez, Police Chief Eugene Harris, and Pasadena Water and Power general manager Sidney Jackson.
“In my second term, I’d like to have us capitalize on the fact that we have a great team in place,” Gordo said. “We’re taking on some big issues, like addressing mental health issues in our community that were exacerbated greatly during the pandemic. We’re taking on the issue of job training, together with the school district and Pasadena City College, and housing. And I think we’re off to a good start.”
In his State of the City address this year, Gordo shared that the city’s general fund revenue has improved from $267.2 million in 2020 to almost $303 million in the current fiscal year, and the arrival of businesses like General Motors, Lucid Motors, Protomer Technologies and Xencor have kept the economy growing and helped temper unemployment.
In addition to a new accessory dwelling unit program, nearly 1,000 luxury apartment units were acquired for low- and moderate-income rental housing. The city council also recently approved the purchase of the empty Kaiser Permanente building that will be transformed into a space for affordable housing, mental health care services and primary outpatient services.
During his first meeting as mayor, Pasadena rejoined the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments with the aim of creating more housing throughout the re-
gion. Construction is underway on over 500 units of affordable housing, including the Salvation Army’s Hope Center — a permanent 64-unit supportive housing development.
Following the November 2024 election, Gordo said that one of his first goals for a second term, alongside ensuring a healthy economic landscape and balanced budget, is to continue the process of founding a public health and mental health clinic.
“We do not have a public health and mental health clinic as we should in Pasadena, and I am prepared to take on that challenge together with my colleagues,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of enthusiasm in the community for that effort, and the county is now committed. We’ve bought the property now in what some considered be lightning speed, and what people don’t realize is it took a lot of work to get to that point, but here we are. … We made the commitment.”
Gordo also expressed his desire to create new opportunities for trade-centered learning in education.
“I’m working with the superintendent of the PUSD, with the president of PCC and the LA and Orange County Building Trades, and we’re looking at some of the vacant school sites,” he said. “The challenge for all of us is to reimagine public education and model how you can take closed schools and provide educational and job training career paths for people in our community. … I’m challenging us to look at them as an opportunity to reimagine public education by joining up with the LA and Orange County Building Trades to provide training opportunities at one or more of these closed sites … not just for tradespeople, but nurses and other professionals, for people who want an alternative path to a four-year degree.
“For those that want to go to a four-year school, we will continue to assist them, encourage them and do all we can to get them there. But not everybody chooses that path, and they too deserve an opportunity to be successful and find a path that fits them, that they enjoy and that helps make them successful and contributing members of our community.”
Finally, Gordo wishes to build on the 710
stub, a 50-acre swatch of land that was seized by the state through eminent domain, upheaving minority and low-income communities for a proposed freeway extension before being returned to the city. It has been described as a “scar” in Pasadena.
“The reimagining and reenvisioning of the 710 corridor … is a communitywide effort,” he said. “We shouldn’t think of it as a project. If we think of it as a project, then we are failing from the beginning. This is a moment in time. This is something that doesn’t reoccur again, where you get to reimagine an entire swath of a city, and I think this is an opportunity to respect the beautiful city that we’ve inherited as we reimagine the Pasadena of tomorrow by reimagining these 50 acres to compliment that great city that we’ve inherited.”
Along with the personal fulfillment in supporting the city he loves, Gordo also expressed his gratitude for the reciprocated support from the Pasadena community, with endorsements from leaders like Councilmembers Steve Madison, Tyron Hampton and Felicia Williams and organizations like the United Teachers of Pasadena and Pasadena Firefighters Association.
“It really is humbling when you hear from people that they support you, but it’s
also encouraging,” he said. “What makes me proudest is people feel good about
where we are. Sure, there are challenges, but they feel engaged in the process. They feel like they’re a part of it.
“That was my goal running the first time, to change the tone at city hall so that people felt included, so that council members all had an opportunity to participate, so that the staff felt valued and that residents had an opportunity to be a part of the process and part of those solutions. … People feel engaged, and they want to continue the momentum.”
Gordo said he wants his generation of Pasadena community members to be remembered for their togetherness during times of hardship and success.
“If I were to fast forward and then have the opportunity to look back, I’d like for this generation of Pasadenans … residents, business communities and it’s elected city council and leadership, to be looked at as a group of people who cared for one another, who cared for and respected the great city that they inherited and left it even better than they received it,” he said. “That’s what I’d like this generation of Pasadenans to be remembered for. And I will smile deeply knowing that I had a hand.”
Stand Tall to Hate
Glendale town hall discusses anti-Armenian racism
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorOne hundred and eight years ago, the Ottoman Empire began a campaign of violence that killed or displaced 1.5 million Armenians. The genocide left a scar on Armenia and its people around the world, still felt in the Armenian communities throughout Los Angeles today.
In a recent town hall meeting at Glendale Central Library, the Truth and Accountability League (TAAL) and LA County Commission on Human Relations brought elected officials and community leaders together to discuss a string of recent racist fliers seen in Beverly Hills and Glendale that reportedly called for the extermination of Armenians.
“It’s unfathomable that, on the heels of the Armenian genocide anniversary, Armenians are terrorized by fliers around schools and churches,” said TAAL founder Vic Gerami, who moderated the event dedicated to raising awareness and discussing solutions to combat increasing anti-Armenian racism and propaganda.
“This is really painful because we have kids; we have to explain this to our kids,” Commissioner Sam Kbushyan said during the town hall. “They go to public schools; they engage with all kinds of people. … And this is on social media saying that Armenians should have been erased and the next phase of genocide will be concluded. It really hurts because growing up, we Armenians are victims of the genocide. … We’ve been educated with the non-Armenians and the world of all these atrocities that ‘Never again,’ and we have this issue.”
Glendale Mayor Daniel Brotman spoke of the city’s “checkered past” and summarized a brief history of anti-Armenian rhetoric in the community as more Armenians began to hold political positions and build cultural influence in Glendale, now one of the largest Armenian diaspora communities in the world.
“There was a lot of pushback,” he said. “There was a lot of the old Glendale that didn’t appreciate having others come in and kind of change the fabric of the community. … But when we look at today’s Glendale, I mean, can you imagine Glendale today without the Armenian community? The Armenian American population
is incredibly active politically, in civic organizations, contributes so much to this city. … I don’t want to downplay the tensions that still exist, but despite all that, we are really a highly functional, integrated community.”
Brotman said that the city is “in a good place,” that he didn’t know where the fliers came from and doubted that they came from members of the Glendale community. Gerami responded by saying that where they originated from is “irrelevant,” that anti-Armenian racism still exists in Glendale, and that there is no task force or budget dedicated to combating hate incidents in the city.
“There are many ways to go at this,” Brotman replied. “We have our Armenian genocide commemorative event every year.
… We obviously speak out regularly on these issues, and we pass resolutions. We have sister cities in Artsakh, and we do many, many things to show that we have the backs of our Armenian community here and Armenians around the world.”
The Glendale Police Department has not yet made an arrest regarding the fliers, but the investigation remains ongoing. Glendale Police Chief Manuel Cid said the department is looking to enlist the help of community members who may have information regarding the incident.
“It’s concerning, and it follows a trend of ongoing hate speech and rhetoric that we see in several different communities, in this instance targeting the Armenian community here in Glendale … (with) fliers found, I think, more than a dozen of them, scattered in front of a church and throughout other areas in the city,” Cid said. “Any threat to any group or individual in our community really is a threat to our way of life and our entire community. I think as a police department and as a community, we need to take it as such.
“We’re going to bring all our resources to bear in investigating any of those sorts of incidents, trying to identify who’s responsible for them, working in collaboration with our partners … to try to identify these individuals that are responsible, establish if we have a crime and, if we do, actively look to prosecute it.”
Joseph F. Iniguez, chief of staff from the LA County District Attorney’s Office, explained that many cases of racism cannot be pursued as a crime, as the First Amend-
ment can protect instances of hate speech from prosecution. When a hate incident motivates property damage, physical harm or death, it can then be classed as a hate crime. Despite this distinction, Iniguez said that both events cause immense harm to the victims and wider community.
“When there’s a hate incident, there’s a tremendous impact in the community and on individuals that are impacted by that hate incident, the same way that a hate crime where there may be property damage or physical injury or even death can also have an impact on the community,” he said. “Our relationships with law enforcement are very strong, and we’re confident that when they bring us these cases, we’re going to give them a fair analysis. But more importantly, we’re going to provide victims with services because that’s the biggest component to start the survivor’s healing journey, even if we can’t prosecute a case.”
strongest action as possible, that they know the options they have and the resources they have to take it seriously.”
The need for collaboration was also raised by Robin S. Toma, executive director of the LA County Commission on Human Relations, who stressed the importance of connecting victims with available resources like LA vs. Hate, an online reporting tool.
“I’m sure all of you have seen (anti-racist) statements for a long time,” Toma said. “Just putting a message out there perhaps is not going to change the way we’ve been operating. It’s important, but it’s not enough.
“There’re so many different acts of hate that happen that are completely unknown and unreported, except for people experiencing them. … There are things that we can’t turn to the police and the prosecutors to take action on because it’s just simply not a crime, and that’s where their ability really ends.”
Systems like LA vs. Hate were created so that people can report incidents of hate and not only receive resources like trauma counseling but also take action.
“This is something where you can pursue your civil rights under our state laws, under our federal laws,” Toma said. “Say it happens at a school and you don’t know whether the school’s really taking it seriously. … We’re going to help you work with the school to make sure that they are taking the
Cid added that education can be crucial to preventing hate incidents from occurring in the future while also making people aware of resources like LA vs. Hate if they are a victim of racism.
“There’re so many parts of our communities, particularly our immigrant communities, that don’t understand the resources that are available to them,” he said. “The collaboration with our school district can’t be understated. And to be able to educate our youth, let them know and their families know the resources that are available to them is something that this police department takes great lengths in doing. (We) pride ourselves on it, and we’ll keep working at it because by no means have we attained where we’re trying to be, but there’s a great deal of effort that’s being put forth from this organization and this community.”
Nearly 40% of Glendale’s population belongs to the Armenian community. The city has become an important home for Armenian people and their cultural heritage, and both elected leaders and community members alike have expressed their commitment to ending Armenian hate in Glendale.
“It’s not just caring about your own group that’s targeted, but recognizing that we stand for one another when it happens” Toma said. “This won’t change unless we realize that it matters.”
Community Changes
City Council approves batting cages, renames park
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorIn a recent meeting, the Pasadena City Council unanimously approved motions for the construction of a batting cage at Victory Park through a donation from Pasadena American Little League, the renaming of the park at 1410 Wierfield Drive, and the adoption of proposed changes to the Public Park and Recreational Facility Naming Policy.
The first proposal raised plans for a new batting cage that would occupy a space adjacent to Diamond 2 at Victory Park. The batting cage would be built by the Pasadena business Pearson Management Services and would cost an estimated $89,670. The project would be paid for in full by Pasadena American Little League, an all-volunteer organization that has previously partnered with the city of Pasadena to complete projects like rehabilitating the dugout, replacing the scoreboard, maintaining concession stand equipment and building batting cages at Hamilton Park, as well as bringing in new infield dirt, rebuilding pitcher mounds and replacing backstop padding at both Victory and Hamilton parks.
The new batting cages would allow coaches and players to conduct hitting practice and bullpen sessions without the concern of balls traveling to walking trails or the parking lot, creating a safer environment for players and park visitors.
The Parks, Recreation and Community Service recommended that the council accept the donation from Pasadena American Little League and authorize the city manager to enter into a labor and material contract
“Secret Ingredients” (5/04/23)
By Rose Sloan & Shannon Rappwith the organization for the batting cages’ construction. Mayor Victor Gordo thanked and congratulated Pasadena American Little League for its contribution.
“With gratitude to the little leaguers and the coaches and all the volunteers at Pasadena American, we’ll accept that contribution,” he said.
The second proposal outlined plans for the new park located at 1410 Wierfield Drive to be named Annandale Canyon Nature Preserve and the associated trail be named Yayaaytnga Trail.
The request initially came from a letter by members of the Linda Vista-Annandale Association (LVAA), who expressed concern that they were not consulted during the naming process of the park, formerly known as Annandale Canyon Park.
LVAA suggested the name be modified to Annandale Canyon Nature Preserve to emphasize its public status and avoid any misconception that it is a private area. The Pasadena nonprofit also requested that the park’s associated trail be named the Yayaaytnga Trail to honor the Indigenous peoples who occupied the area. It is a Gabrielino-Tongva name that means “Place of Birds.”
During the council’s initial process of hearing the park name proposals on Oct. 24, 2022, councilmembers expressed concerns about the limited amount of public input in the naming process.
They referred the Public Park and Recreational Facility Naming Policy, which stated that the city can notify and accept input from all property owners within a 1,000-foot radius of the subject site, to the
Legislative
Policy Committee for review.
The Legislative Policy Committee and the Recreation and Parks Commission both recommended that the public outreach on naming parks or recreational facilities be expanded.
The proposed revisions were to notify and accept input on naming from mayors and councilmembers, the city’s social media platforms, neighborhood associations and any other relevant stakeholders. In addition, a 30-day public input collection period would be added to the policy.
All three of the motions were approved without opposition after votes in favor from Gordo; Vice Mayor Felicia Williams; and Councilmembers Tyron Hampton, Justin Jones, Jason Lyon, Steve Madison, Gene Masuda and Jess Rivas.

Inside and Out
Pasadena internist cares about head-to-toe health
By Summer Aguirre Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterDr. John de Beixedon says that by utilizing the time of the past and the knowledge of the present, he provides the health care of the future.
A board-certified internal medicine physician, de Beixedon has been in private practice in Pasadena since 1998. He specializes in diabetes and bariatrics, the medicine of weight loss.
“Essentially, (internal medicine) is medical care for adults and involves all of the body systems — the skin and everything inside of it,” de Beixedon said.
As medicine has changed over the years, he has learned to adapt aspects of his practice. Currently, his practice focuses on concierge care, weight loss medicine and,
most recently, aesthetic medicine.
Medicare, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna and UnitedHealthcare are accepted for his internal medicine services.
De Beixedon cares for patients who are 17 and older, some of whom travel from Orange County, Thousand Oaks and Rancho Cucamonga to receive his care.
He earned his Doctor of Medicine from St. George’s University School of Medicine in 1988 and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Virginia.
Concierge care
De Beixedon’s practice is a part of Concierge Choice Physicians, a concierge program of a few hundred doctors across the United States. Concierge doctors are more
accessible than traditional primary care physicians, offering services that are not available in a regular office.
“What the concierge practice allows you to do is it gives you the time that was available 20 years ago and the technology that’s available today, so you can make the medical practice of the future,” de Beixedon said.
Members of the concierge program are typically 25 and older, and can receive highly personalized and compassionate, attentive care for an annual fee of $2,200.
This includes an extended annual examination with a thorough health review and supplementary testing; longer appointment blocks; same- or next-day appointment scheduling; as well as de Beixedon’s personal cellphone number for direct, 24/7 communication.
tonic scan (related to nutrition), EKG, pulmonary function test, metabolic test and a full evaluation of body composition.
Patients are then given a physical covering their overall health, in addition to an assessment and a plan.
“All people have to do is go to that assessment and plan and look at the problem, and then I will usually bold what I want them to do,” de Beixedon said. “As long as they read what I gave them, they’ll have good health, or as good as I can provide.”
“I have a very impressive attention to detail,” he added. “For my concierge patients, that’s one of the things that’s made a big difference in a lot of people’s lives.”
Medical weight loss
With lengthened appointments, de Beixedon can spend more time with patients to discuss their health concerns and treatment options more thoroughly.
“If somebody is 80 years old and they go see their regular doctor who isn’t concierge (and they) come in for five or 10 minutes — an 80-year-old is going to come in on 10 different medicines with eight different problems, and there just isn’t time to deal with it,” he said. “However, with concierge medicine, it’s a 30-minute appointment. And so, with a 30-minute appointment, you can address almost everybody’s concerns.”
Physicals are organized similarly, with two-hour blocks dedicated to regular physical services in addition to a biopho-
In addition to concierge care, de Beixedon has partnered with The Center for Medical Weight Loss for the past 15 years.
Through this partnership, his practice provides patients personalized weight loss programs. These can include body composition analyses, doctor-supervised food plans, metabolism regulation, appetite management, science-based activity recommendations, and lifestyle and motivational coaching.
De Beixedon’s practice offers three plans that are tailored to each person’s individual needs and preferences: accelerated plans, low-calorie diets and appetite suppressant plans. Because every person has unique needs, prices vary.
The benefit of weight loss improves the individual’s health overall. De Beixedon
said that while helping body movement, weight loss also improves blood pressure and sugar control for diabetics, and lowers cholesterol and the risk of heart attack or stroke.
“I actually try to (help) people keep that weight off and not regain it, and that is super important,” he said. “Because usually what people do is they reach their goal weight and then they are just sent on their way. If patients don’t have follow up, they can regain the weight.”
What sets this weight loss program apart from others is that it is not only designed by doctors, it is utilized by them as well.
“When a lot of people go to weight loss programs, they don’t see a doctor or they see a nurse or medical assistant, who may or may not have any sort of training in actual bariatric medicine,” de Beixedon said. “Whereas, The Center for Medical Weight Loss, all of the practitioners are doctors and they all have done courses in bariatric medicine … so the difference would be it’s really done by a doctor.”
EvolveX
For six months, de Beixedon has also been offering aesthetic medicine with
EvolveX treatment, which is a noninvasive body sculpting platform from the company InMode Aesthetics.
On one machine, EvolveX utilizes three technologies that treat skin appearance, tones muscle, and transforms body tissue and muscle. These can be customized and combined to meet patient needs.
Unlike liposuction, which can hinder recipients from engaging in strenuous activities for a couple weeks, de Beixedon said those who receive EvolveX treatment can work out the same day.
“It also is somewhat beneficial in that you’re eliminating (fat) permanently. Fat cells don’t regrow once you destroy them — you don’t get new ones,” he said. “So, if you have an area, a pocket of fat you need to get rid of, it’s a lot easier to do it without cutting somebody open or sticking a probe into them.”
De Beixedon added this service to his practice to better care for his weight loss patients from an aesthetic standpoint after losing weight.
“So now, not only do I do concierge medicine, not only do I help people lose weight, but I also can help people destroy fat, tighten their skin and build muscle all at the same time,” he said.

Like Heaven
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorLadytron multi-instrumentalist Daniel Hunt looks at the Just Like Heaven festival lineup as familiar and something to be revered.
“The lineup has a lot of people we’ve played with in the past — fellow travelers, as it were,” Hunt said. “It feels a bit like Coachella used to be.”
The Liverpool-bred band is in the throes of playing its first shows since 2020. It gigged in the United Kingdom, Scotland, London and Liverpool so far. Hunt said fans can expect a taste of something different.
was so disorientated. It was like a zombie apocalypse. It was about six months before we could really get going with it.”
The pandemic delayed the record’s completion until early 2022, he said. Hunt said he is proud of it.
“My personal minimum goal for each record we do is I want it to be our best record,” he said.
“That’s really the goal of each one. If I didn’t think it was a progression or improvement, it would mean that it wasn’t ready and we’d have to work on it more.”
If someone were to ask Hunt which album to start with in Ladytron’s catalog, he would answer “Time’s Arrow,” he said.
“It’s a new set containing a lot of the most well-known material and quite a few from the new album as well,” he said. “We never play a pure ‘greatest hits’ set. We always have a chunk of the new record. It’s worked really well for us. We do Just Like Heaven at the end of a four-show run. These will be our first U.S. shows since December 2019.”
“I’d want this record to be that,” he said. “I’d then point them in the direction of another for a second listen. People hear very different things in it. Nobody really sounds like us, to be honest. We have a sound, and that’s why we remind people of different, previous albums.”
Ladytron is approaching its 25th anniversary, as it formed in 1999 in Liverpool. Hunt can’t quite wrap his head around that. After all, Ladytron didn’t have plans for even a second record.
Ladytron used its pandemic-dictated time off to record an album, the critically acclaimed “Time’s Arrow.” The process was difficult because the quartet started it in the spring of 2020 — at the dawn of the pandemic — after a short jaunt. They recorded part of it in the Glasgow, Scotland, studio owned by indie rockers Mogwai. It was eerie.
“After a day or so, I thought, ‘I’m not sure whether this is OK,’” he recalled. “Things were getting worse by the hour, with all the news that was coming in. We decided to abandon the session and get ourselves home and safe.”
The goal was to work on music during the lockdown and be productive. The opposite happened.
“Once I got home, it was like paralysis,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine the world the record was going to be released into. It
“It’s hard to fathom, to be honest,” he said.
“Obviously, as you get older, you experience time more quickly. But I also think the way we perceive time and experience time has changed because of social networks and the nature of media now. I feel like that’s an element, too.
“Also, now it feels like musicians and artists have indefinite life spans and careers. In the old days, you were in this band for five years and nearly broke up, usually for logistical reasons. Now there’s no reason to break up. If you’re still having ideas, making music and have an audience, there’s no reason to stop. It feels less unusual that we’ve been going this long now.”

Reborn Buddy Greenbloom celebrating his new anthem
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorAfter 20 years as Buddy Greenbloom, the musician has decided it’s time for a theme song.
“I’ve been calling myself ‘The Gothic Cowboy,’ so I thought I had to write an anthem,” said Pasadena’s Greenbloom, whose real name is Ralph Brekan.
“I jotted the idea down on the back of an envelope. It took me a little time to get the melody together.”
Greenbloom and his 2-year-old band, the Gothic Cowboys, will celebrate the release of “The Gothic Cowboy,” his fifth studio single, on Thursday, May 18, at his Americana Music Night at Trip Santa Monica.
The showcase — the third Thursday of the month — features up-and-coming country, bluegrass and blues musicians in Los Angeles. It provides songwriters access to new audiences and creates an alternative venue for LA-area record label reps and music publishers to hear Southern California songwriters.
Past Americana showcases at Trip have featured rising Americana stars like Taylor Hungerford of Tar and Flowers and Matt Axton, son of actor/songwriter Hoyt Axton. “The release party is part of our ongoing Americana Music Night,” Greenbloom said.
“The last one we had was a celebration of Americana Music Night and coincided with the week of my birthday. I was super stoked to have a birthday party there. It’s one great time after another.”
Readying a full-length album, the Gothic Cowboys perform original songs and popular punk and new wave songs as country-western standards, as well as the classics with a cowpunk edge.
“I do songs like Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ with an upright bass, a slide guitar, mandolin and classical nylon string, and a fiddle.
“It’s an interesting arrangement with something that started out electronic. It’s original to a degree, but it’s also marketable. If you look carefully out there, tribute bands and cover bands are picking up steam. You
have to package yourself in a way that’s unique.”
The Greenbloom project was created 20 years ago, but Brekan put it on the back burner for an audio engineering career. Two years ago, he yearned to bring him back, so he dug up old material — poems and songs.
“The character ‘Buddy’ is a rebirth, a genesis of another art project for me,” he said. “It’s a performance art project, and I’m really enjoying it.”
“The Gothic Cowboy” project was a logical move for Brekan, who was raised during the MTV generation.
“I grew up listening to new wave music,” he said. “I was way into A Flock of Seagulls, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and the Cure — that whole U.K. second British invasion.
“I even liked the American bands like the Ramones, Blondie and the Go-Go’s. I started doing Western-sounding folk covers of songs like ‘People Are People’ (by Depeche Mode) at the Yucca Tap Room in Tempe, Arizona, and around Phoenix, when I lived there.”
In his home studio, he recorded the 2003 11-song tribute to the Jesus and Mary Chain, “My Little Underground.” The English duo had a profound effect on him.
“I remember pedaling with a Walkman, listening to ‘April Skies’ over and over,” he said. “My tape would automatically go the opposite direction.”
Thanks to the Jesus and Mary Chain tribute, Greenbloom performed at CBGB’s in New York, the now-shuttered Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena, the Whisky and the Troubadour in West Hollywood.
He attributed his success to his years in the Southwest, namely Arizona.
“It’s cowboy poetry,” he said of his music. “Western music is deeply rooted in my family’s heritage. My aunt was a session drummer. I had a new wave band that opened for the Gin Blossoms. I rejected my heritage back then. When I brought this act around to pay tribute to the Jesus and Mary Chain, I put them in the Western standard. That’s what started Buddy Greenbloom. Now we’re ready for the next chapter.”

Looking Ahead
John Muir students celebrate life after high school
By Leah Schwartz Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterWith four years of hard work behind them, seniors at John Muir High School Early College Magnet are ready for the next chapter. Some will go on to four-year universities, and others will attend community colleges, trade schools or the military.
Regardless of their plans, all 160 graduating seniors were honored for their commitment to learning during this year’s College Signing Day on May 1, joining students from 3,000 other schools nationwide.
“We include all of our seniors, regardless of their path after high school,” said Alejandra Diaz, an early college counselor at John Muir High School, who organized
the schoolwide assembly.
The school’s tradition began in 2019, following the Reach Higher initiative, which encourages students to pursue post-secondary education, started by former First Lady Michelle Obama. A generation ago, the United States led the world in college enrollment but has since slipped to 13th globally, lagging behind many other industrialized countries.
In the past, a high school diploma might have been enough to begin a lucrative career, but in the 21st century, three-quarters of jobs require education and training beyond high school. The average employee with a bachelor’s degree will earn approximately $1 million more over a lifetime than an employee with only a high school diploma.
For the best homes, all signs point to
The auditorium was adorned with blue and gold balloon towers and an illuminated “2023” sign — all handmade by teachers. Students were called up individually to the stage to receive congratulatory cheers from their peers and a yellow rose, representing the school’s characteristic gold and blue colors. The next time the seniors will gather will be graduation on Thursday, June 1.
“We want all our students to see what’s possible when they graduate. We make this for all of our students,” said Dr. Lawton Gray, principal at John Muir High School. “The seniors are represented, but the freshmen, sophomores and juniors come to the assembly, giving them an idea of what they can do in the future and putting it in the forefront of their minds.”
Effectively closing their high school careers, seniors felt conflicting emotions walking up to the stage. “I’m excited and nervous. I enjoyed my time here at Muir and don’t want to leave. Still, I want to do bigger things and grow,” said senior Celeste Sharp, who plans on attending the University of California, Santa Cruz, to major in agroecology in the hopes of working in sustainable agriculture.
Senior Eileen Gonzales will attend the University of California, Santa Barbara, and plans on majoring in psychology to become a child psychologist. “I have a bunch of mixed emotions. I’m happy to be leaving, but I’m also sad. … I don’t want to grow up, but it’s a part of life, so I just have to deal with it,” Gonzales laughed.
“But I’m excited overall to see what my future holds.”
John Muir High School has a long partnership with Pasadena City College, where many students will attend. Future PCC student Briana Martinez detailed her readiness to venture into the world. “I’m mainly excited to get my life started, to go into the world and experience many different things,” she said. “This has been my safe haven, but now I’m venturing into life and very excited.”
Some were less ready. “I’m sad. We didn’t fully experience it (high school). We took a year and a half off because of the pandemic, and then we were supposed to be adults,” said senior Brianne Feraa, who plans on taking a gap year before continuing her studies in psychology.
Senior Christina Leyva will attend Dickinson College in the fall and plans to major in psychology to become a speech-language pathologist. “It’s scary and sad,” Leyva said on leaving high school.
Trepidatious or excited, there’s one thing all seniors should feel — pride. “To see the growth in our students over four years is amazing. Some of them come in not knowing about college as first-generation college students, but when they leave here, they’re ready to go to college and know what they want to do,” Gray said. “Our students work so hard, and celebrating them in this manner feels great. It’s nice to have all of our students cheering for them.”
Possibilities in the Air
Students take their 1st flight through the Airport Academy
By Leah Schwartz Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterNot many people know what it takes to get a plane into the air — from the mechanics of an aircraft to the dozens of airport and flight personnel — but the students participating in Hollywood Burbank Airport’s Airport Academy learn all this and more.
Nearly two dozen high school students recently embarked on a complimentary same-day roundtrip flight to Santa Rosa from Hollywood Burbank Airport as part of the Airport Academy. Three of the students on the trip had never flown.
The Airport Academy is a career exploration and education program for Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena high school students interested in aviation. Over five monthly sessions, students tour Hollywood Burbank Airport and meet aviation personnel. Students also meet with representatives from the airlines, the Transportation Security Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, airport fire and police, FedEx and local college aviation programs. The program began again in January after an extended hiatus.
“There are so many jobs in the industry that need to be filled up,” explained Nerissa Sugars, director of communications at Hollywood Burbank Airport. “It’s really valuable for all of us to have this new generation of job seekers come up and say, ‘Well, maybe this is a possibility.’ That’s been the focus — to get them interested.”
In partnership with the Airport Academy, Avelo Airlines provided students with tickets for the trip. Around noon, students flew out of Hollywood Burbank Airport on board a Boeing 737-700 Next Generation, the most popular plane in the world for commercial aviation. After an hour and a half in the air, they landed at Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport. Following lunch and a tour, the students arrived back in Burbank at 5 p.m.
“We’ve donated the tickets for these students to experience the wonders of flight and hopefully inspire a few of them to pursue careers in aviation,” said Jim Olson, head of communications at Avelo Airlines, which recently celebrated its second anniversary. “Our mission is to inspire travel, but it also means inspiring a new generation of crew members. … Even if we inspire them to work for a different airline,
we’re happy with that, too. There’s a huge shortage of people to fill the growing field of aviation, “We want to get people excited and motivated to pursue these careers.”
As a first-time flyer, this was the trip of a lifetime for Rose City High School student Allison Vasquez. Apart from the eagle-eye view, Vasquez was giddy to experience the feeling of takeoff and landing. “I just hope I don’t get motion sickness,” she said. “I want to experience this to the fullest.”
Vasquez began the program for “exploration” and has since considered entering the fire department or working as a flight attendant. “It’s been fun, and I’ve learned a lot,” she said. “It’s very intriguing how much history is behind this place and how much work goes into making an airport run.”
Another Pasadena student, Shelby Gutierrez, began the Airport Academy after watching her aunt’s career at Los Angeles International Airport. Her academy highlights included learning about airplane mechanics, airport security and the bomb squad, which was her favorite.
As the program’s culmination, the trip integrates all the knowledge students have accrued during the academy. “They’re going to experience firsthand what happens when all those airport and airline people come together — all these roles that they’ve been learning about — and they come together to ensure that passengers have a safe and comfortable experience,” Sugars said.
Leading with Experience
By Pasadena Weekly StaffPasadena Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Brian McDonald has named Dr. Sergio Canal as the district’s chief human resources officer.
Canal has more than 25 years of experience in K-12 education.
He will be part of the superintendent’s executive leadership team and will be responsible for leading the district’s human resources division and its activities in the recruitment, selection and assignment of employees, along with compensation, employee performance and accountability, salary administration and labor relations.
“Dr. Canal brings extensive experience building structures and systems that center
on what school employees need to ensure that students are prepared for success,” McDonald said.
“His focus on building trusting relationships with labor partners and school and district leaders will help propel the district to the next level.”
Canal joined PUSD from the Upland Unified School District, where he has served as assistant superintendent of human resources for the past four years. In this role, he navigated the impact of COVID-19 and led the successful development of an agreement with labor partners that enabled the district to be one of the first in the county to reopen schools for in-person instruction.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to lead in this capacity,” Canal said. “I look forward to working with everyone in our learning community to build on the great things happening at Pasadena Unified and increase our students’ educational experience and outcomes.”
Canal was a bilingual instructional assistant, teacher, assistant principal and school principal. At the district level, he has worked as director, administrative director, and assistant superintendent of human resources.
As administrative director of human resources with the Walnut Valley Unified School District, he established systems and protocols to assist with recruiting, em-
ployee retention, and internal protocols to ensure hiring efficiency.
As director of secondary education and pupil personnel services in the Walnut Valley Unified School District, Canal led professional development for certificated, classified and management staff; collaborated on revamping and implementing the district’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP); and developed systems to ensure curricular resources aligned with established goals.
Canal has an Ed.D. in educational leadership from the University of Southern California and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from California State University, Los Angeles.
The appointment was effective May 1.
