Laura Latzko,
Dear Sen. Portantino,
I’m pleased to see that you’re running for U.S. Congress. For goodness’ sake, we need you there. You definitely have the potential to fill Congressman Schiff’s shoes, especially in the area of women’s rights, aka human rights. Kudos to you for showing up physically for so many of us over the years, attempting to save Roe and supporting Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ+ people either on the steps of Pasadena City Hall or at All Saints Episcopal. I am particularly fond of your stalwart support of Title IX.
I once saw you at a campaign event I covered for the Pasadena Weekly; you told me, “I was dismayed when I saw that they expected the girls to practice softball with no night lighting. The boys’ fields were lit and allowed for nighttime play.” You share my indignation on so many issues.
While you know me for my lifelong commitment to ending misogyny, you may not know that I have been on the board of Consumer Watchdog for over 30 years. I’m a proud growler and barker.
I really like your Congressional campaign motto: “Principled. Courageous. Fighting for you.” I’m using this open letter to preemptively ask you to take a principled and courageous stand in the fight against community oil drilling while you’re still in the California Legislature and later — fingers crossed — when you’re in Congress.
Before I get into the drilling details, you can be a hero for people like Nalleli Cobo, the brave youth who is the poster child for California SB 556, the bill that puts the oil and gas industry on the hook for health damages like Ms. Cobo’s.
At 9, Nalleli started organizing to shut down the oil well 30 feet from her home: a well making her family sick. She helped found a grassroots campaign called People Not Pozos, Spanish for “wells.”
“When I was about 11,” Nalleli wrote recently in the LA Times, “I was diagnosed with asthma. By the time I turned 19, we had shut down the drilling in our South LA neighborhood, but not before I was diagnosed with Stage II reproductive cancer. I lost my ability to bear children as a result.
“After three surgeries, eight minor procedures, three rounds of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation, I was cancer free as of two years ago, at 20.”
Now, the hard facts: There are more than 100 operational oil and gas wells within 3,200 feet of a home, school or sensitive community receptor in the Congressional district you seek to represent and in the San Gabriel Valley where you currently have constituents. As the chair of the State Senate Appropriations Committee, you also have the power to protect people who live near wells in Downtown Los Angeles and all over California and your district.
These wells are killers. An independent panel of public health experts assembled by the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) found a direct link between asthma and prenatal defects for people living within half a mile of oil wells. Then there are the carcinogens that oil wells spew — benzene and formaldehyde among them. Studies show that cancer diagnoses are much greater in people who live so close to wells.
Here’s the sticking point where Consumer Watchdog will be barking: SB 556 must pass out of the State Senate Appropriations Committee you chair by May 19. This bill discourages dangerous community drilling by requiring drillers to use the best available technology to mitigate risk or
face presumptive liability for the harm they cause people who live within 3,200 feet of wells.
Now it’s up to you to decide based on the fiscal evidence.
As a board member of Consumer Watchdog, I am keenly aware of the powers you wield as chairman of the appropriations committee to hold bills without hearings because they allegedly cost too much money. A bill that goes on the “suspense file” can disappear without anyone having to take a vote to stop it.
SB 556 deserves better. The deterrent effect of the bill has the potential to save the state hundreds of millions of dollars in health care and other costs if it can prevent asthma, prenatal defects and cancer because drillers used the best technologies. The public health expert memo prepared for CalGEM found social benefits of more than $382.5 million annually from eliminating community drilling. Many of these economic benefits would be realized by SB 556’s deterrent effect on reckless community drilling.
Recognizing the impact of drilling on communities last year, the Legislature passed SB 1137 (Gonzalez), which stopped new drilling within 3,200 feet of communities. The oil drillers spent more than $20 million to qualify for a referendum that delays the ban until November 2024, when voters decide. Meanwhile, the drilling goes on, putting our communities at risk.
Consider the pain and suffering that could have been avoided in Nalleli’s life and the cost to the health care system if reckless drilling had been deterred. Nalleli and people like her count on you to tap into your love as a father to make sure SB 556 has a deterrent impact on the “we don’t care” oil and gas industries. Principled. Courageous. Fighting for you with SB 556. We’re watching.
Sincerely,

The South Pasadena Police Department will become the first in the nation to convert its entire police fleet to electric vehicles. Made possible by nearly $500,000 in Clean Transportation Funding from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC), as well as investments by both Southern California Edison’s Charge Ready program and South Pasadena City Council, South Pasadena will purchase 10 Tesla Model Y patrol vehicles and install nine police-dedicated “Level II” electric vehicle chargers along with one “Level III” electric vehicle charger.
The city expects the installation of the chargers to be complete by the end of the year and the vehicles to be in service by February. According to South Pasadena Councilmember Michael Cacciotti, who championed the initiative and transition, this project supports the city’s Climate Action Plan as well as procurement of state-of-the-art public safety vehicle technology.
innovative clean air projects to help agencies who want to do the right thing succeed in their plans.”
The city also partnered with Southern California Edison, which will install the electric vehicle chargers through its Charge Ready program. The Charge Ready program maintains and covers the improvement costs up to the charger for qualified sites, which may include transformers, panel upgrades, meters and service wiring/conduits, while program participants own, operate and maintain the charging stations.
The city estimates that the police department will save more than $300,000 per vehicle over 10 years in reduced fueling and maintenance costs. Fueling costs for a vehicle will be reduced more than tenfold, from $4,355 for gasoline to $366 in electrical energy costs per year.
“We will be putting our officers in the safest and most effective police vehicles on the market,” he said. “In addition to that, we will be investing in technology that will help reduce harmful vehicle emissions to improve air quality for all our residents. This effort will provide a model for other jurisdictions; we can build a 21st century police force, save significant resources and clean the air at the same time.”
The city council voted in September to make the switch, as the current public safety vehicle fleet was beyond its useful service life. The city partnered with the MSRC, which provides Clean Transportation Funding to projects that reduce emissions from motor vehicles in the South Coast Air District.
“We are excited to partner with the city of South Pasadena on the first-ofits-kind project to transition an entire fleet of Police vehicles to electric,” said Larry McCallon, chair of the MSRC and Highland mayor. “The MSRC’s funding supports these types of
“The safety of our officers and our citizens is the top priority when making a decision like this,” South Pasadena Police Chief Brian Solinsky said. “We have been investigating this transition for five to six years and determined that these electric vehicles will be the best operationally for us. They are the safest and fastest vehicles and will save the city money in lower maintenance and fueling costs. The fact that they are better for the environment is an added bonus.”
A portion of the infrastructure will be public facing, to support the growing number of electric vehicles in the community, to promote access to charging capabilities in South Pasadena and to further support electrification efforts citywide. Upon the completion of the police fleet electrification project, the department will have 20 electric vehicles for patrol and administrative uses.
“We are creating a state-of-the-art police force” Cacciotti said. “It’s a win for the officers, the community and the environment. We are so thankful to the MSRC for investing in this clean air future for our community and helping us realize this vision.”
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health has launched its Take Action for Mental Health LA County campaign, which focuses on helping county residents support their own mental health and that of others.
The campaign’s call to action encourages people to take action for themselves and others through the LACDMH 24/7 Help Line and the myriad resources available from LACDMH, the nation’s largest public mental health department. It aims to prevent and reduce risk factors by decreasing stigma surrounding mental illness and providing people the tools and connections to seek help for themselves or a loved one.
As part of the campaign, more than 400 grant-funded community events will happen in May and June, including free fairs, art festivals, after-school programs, yoga and 5K run/walk activities, professional conferences, mental health trainings and outreach campaigns. LACDMH also awarded over $8.9 million in grants to 110 community organizations to promote well-being, resilience and community connection. The list of grantees includes Asian Mental Health Project, Black Women for Wellness, Center Theatre Group of Los Angeles, Chinatown Service Center, Girls Club of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Unified School District, Mental Health America of Los Angeles, Minority AIDS Project, Sycamores and Youth with Purpose.
Each of the upcoming events, including the free community fairs in each of the eight LA County service planning areas, will provide free resources; connections; physical and mental well-being-themed
giveaway items; and free meals in warm, celebratory atmospheres that will foster community and togetherness. All events will focus on decreasing stigma and discrimination and increasing help-seeking behaviors and awareness of and access to mental health services and resources.
Upcoming community events in and around the San Gabriel Valley include the Mind-Body Wellness Fair on Thursday, June 1, at 500 E. Villa Street, Pasadena, and feature resource tables, wellness and mindfulness activities, educational games and tours of the Stars Community Center; the Siblings Mind Your Mind Workshop on Saturday, June 3, a three-part workshop series held at Descanso Gardens that promotes mental health for parents of children with developmental disabilities and their siblings; and the Resilience in Action Summit on Saturday, June 10, which will discuss the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversities like the pandemic, hate crimes and shootings and will be held at 700 S. Almansor Street, Alhambra.
“LACDMH recognizes the importance of listening to our stakeholders and partnering with our diverse communities to meet LA County residents where they are,” Los Angeles County Director Dr. Lisa H. Wong said. “The breadth of Take Action for Mental Health LA County campaign events exemplifies the collaboration and the village it takes to form an interconnected community support system that promotes empathy, self-care and care for others.
“Our hope is that the Take Action for Mental Health LA County campaign will create healthy dialogue, reduce stigma surrounding mental illness, and encourage use of DMH resources.”
The city of Pasadena’s Department of Transportation has launched a new Text Before Tow program to alert motorists if their vehicle is about to be towed due to a violation. Enrolled participants will be notified via text and email of an impending tow for the following violations: blocked driveways, temporary “no parking” zones for special events and moving trucks, construction zone parking and 72-hour parking, typically cited for abandoned vehicles.
The program does not apply to peak tow-away, yellow or white zones, hazards or any other parking violations.
Traditionally, the city leaves a courtesy note when a car is tagged for removal
due to a violation, though not everyone sees the note. To help residents avoid a costly tow, with release fees currently standing at $150 for impounded vehicles and $170 for abandoned/abated vehicles, Pasadena adopted San Francisco’s Text Before Tow program, which was launched in 2022.
After a few months of development by the city’s department of information technology, the program has been deemed ready to roll out in Pasadena. Motorists who would like to sign up for the Text Before Tow program are advised to complete the department of transportation’s online form available through the city of Pasadena’s website.
For additional information, contact the department of transportation’s parking services division at 626-744-7665.

Modern English’s “I Melt with You” has been streamed more than 100 million times on Spotify and Apple Music — since 2015. Thousands of couples have been married to the new wave hit. There’s a rather unexpected person among that group.
“I got married last October, and I actually had the band play ‘I Melt with You’ at my wedding,” Modern English’s bassist/vocalist Mick Conroy said with a sly laugh. They were married in Upstate New York.
Fans can expect Modern English to perform “I Melt with You” during Cruel World on Saturday, May 20, at Brookside at The Rose Bowl. The bill also includes Siouxsie, Iggy Pop, Billy Idol, Love and Rockets, Echo & the Bunnymen, Adam Ant, the Human League and Gary Numan.
“I Melt with You” was the second single from Modern English’s 1982 album “After the Snow.” It became the band’s most successful single, largely in the United States, where it was featured in the film “Valley Girl.” It reached No. 7 on Billboard’s main-
stream rock chart in 1983, and a rerelease reached No. 76 on its Hot 100 chart in 1990.
“I Melt with You” has been used in ad campaigns for Hershey’s, Burger King, Ritz Crackers and Sargento Cheese and television shows like “The Goldbergs,” “A Million Little Things” and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.”
This tour’s shows will feature a retrospective of hits and deep cuts, as well as new tracks that Modern English has yet to debut.
“Last year, we did three tours celebrating the 40th anniversary of ‘After the Snow,’” he explained. “After that year, which was all in good fun, we recorded a new LP in Upstate New York. So, they’ll hear Modern English back catalog and then two or three new songs from the next album that we’re hoping to release in the fall.”
The record marks Modern English’s return to its “punk rock origins,” he said.
“We formed in 1977, having seen the Sex Pistols and the Clash and Siouxsie and the Banshees. We formed a punk rock band. It’s definitely more of a short shock bunch of songs.”
The collection has been produced by Mario J. McNulty, whose credits include David Bowie and Lou Reed.
“I was really interested in him because of the David Bowie connections,” he said.
Still, Conroy said he’s surprised “I Melt with You” has had the legs it has.
“Having said that, some of my favorite songs are, God help us, 50 years old,” he said. “‘Aladdin Sane’ is now 50 years old, which makes me feel very old.
“That was the first record I ever had. I got it when I was 10. There are so many amazing songs and albums out there. At the same time, there are new bands who are doing really interesting stuff. ‘I Melt with You’ struck a chord with so many people. Then, as they got older, songs like that are such a part of their memory. At the same time, it seems to appeal to younger people as well. God bless them. It’s impossible to put a good song down.”

Love and Rockets drummer Kevin Haskins feels blessed. He lives in a “little house on a hill” in LA, where he’s preparing for two hometown shows: Cruel World Festival on Saturday, May 20, and the Ace Theater on Tuesday, June 20.
“I have hummingbirds in my garden. Coyotes come through. I saw a bobcat once,” he said.
“It’s very exotic for me, coming from a small town in England. I loved the trees and foliage, and it can be really quiet. Then, I can drive down the hill and, in 10 minutes, be in the thick of it.”
Love and Rockets — which also includes Daniel Ash and David J — played Cruel World Festival last year as members of Bauhaus. This year’s lineup includes ABC, Adam Ant, Animotion, Billy Idol, Echo & the Bunnymen, Gang of Four, Gary Numan, Iggy Pop, Modern English, Siouxsie, the Human League, the Motels and the Vapors.
“That was a great experience, and it went really well,” Haskins said. “We’re back at it again. I was just thinking we’ve shared the stage with Iggy Pop on numerous occasions for various reasons. I’m excited to see Siouxsie. It should be great.
“We opened for Siouxsie and the Banshees as Love and Rockets in 1986, 1987, somewhere around there.”
Love and Rockets formed in 1985 after the first split of Bauhaus, announcing itself with a creative take on the Temptations song “Ball of Confusion.” Finding success in clubs, Love and Rockets has since released seven albums.
When Love and Rockets performs, fans can expect to hear songs like “Ball of Confusion,” “No New Tale to Tell,” “All in My Mind” and “So Alive.”
“For Cruel World, we’re going to play all the well-known songs,” Haskins said.
“I think it’s the appropriate thing to do. People want to hear all those kinds of hits. We’re going on to do our own headline shows afterward. We’re going to add more songs to the set then. There’s one song
called ‘My Dark Twin’ that was never released.”
The song will be released on June 9 as part of its Beggars Arkive reissue series. 2023 has seen the release and near-immediate sellout of a limited-edition box set containing Love and Rockets’ six Beggars Banquet albums on colored vinyl, the announcement of the first Love and Rockets show in 15 years at Cruel World Festival in Pasadena followed by additional tour dates, and the continued reissuing of their six Beggars albums.
“Beggars Banquet LA is rereleasing all the albums this year,” Haskins said. “They didn’t know we were going to be playing live. That’s kind of a very obscure deep cut that we’re hoping to play there. I think we’re going to do some songs that have not been aired before for a long time.”
Haskins said he’s been practicing the songs so fans will be happy with what they hear.
“I have an electronic kit, which I started using with Bauhaus last year,” he said. “From the ’80s on, I started triggering samples and using samples in the studio.
“When we played with Bauhaus and Love and Rockets, it’s nostalgic. Fans want to hear the music pretty close to how the record sounds. I usually go in and sometimes I’ll sample snare beats and create samples just to kind of fill in those holes that are there. It’s something I enjoy doing.”
With his kit, he can change the sounds of every drum, creating reverb on the snare for songs like “Holiday on the Moon.”
“I really enjoy playing the drums, even if I don’t have a show coming up,” he said. “It’s fun and it’s good exercise, which is a bonus. I’ve been listening to (producer) Rick Rubin’s book on Audible, and it’s all about creation and the creative spirit. He claims everyone is creative, which I believe.”
Haskins has been drawn to music since he was young, when he saw David Bowie perform on “Top of the Pops” in England.
Every punk and post-punk musician would call that a life-changing moment,

he added.
“It was so inspiring and sensational and intriguing,” Haskins said.
“I think you have to be driven to succeed. It’s difficult breaking through, and it takes a lot of hard work and commitment. I was born with it, and it never goes away.”
Love and Rockets found success, too, because the musicians swore to be innovative.
“None of us had anything in the way of lessons,” Haskins said with a laugh. “So, we were limited, but we all had the great idea to use those limitations to great effect.
“I’ve never been technically proficient. I could not do a drum solo to save my life. With Bauhaus, especially, I wanted the drumbeat in each song to sound different from the next one. I think we all had that
idea in mind.”
In Rubin’s “The Creative Act: A Way of Being,” Haskins agreed with the notion that musicians are conduits.
“I used to compose film music,” he said. “I did that for about 10 years. I was working on this piece and the next day I came to listen to it. I thought, ‘How did this happen?’ When I’m in the creative flow, I’m lost in another world.
“There could be an earthquake and I probably wouldn’t realize it. I can’t figure out how I pulled all these elements together and had it sound so great. I had this really strong voice come in my head: ‘This is not you. This is from somewhere else. This is the universe and you’re just channeling this.’ I like that idea. It takes all the ego away. It felt really true, and I think, maybe, that’s what we do as artists.”

With the mission of creating local, intimate classical music events, the Melodia Mariposa String Ensemble has partnered with Altadena pianist and organist Mark Robson for a concert at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, May 21.
“We want to bring the best musicians and, not only that, we want to bring to Altadena a very unusual concert with combinations of different instruments and the organ,” said Irina Voloshina, Melodia Mariposa founder and music director. “I don’t remember (the last time) we had an organ concert in Altadena, not like a church service but a real concert. That was the intention.”
The ensemble’s performers, including violinist Philip Vaiman, violist Aaron Oltman, cellist Tina Soule and bassist Will “bj” Johnson, will present Austrian composer Joseph Haydn’s Concerto for Organ and Violin in F major Hob XVlll:6, French composer Alexandre Guilmant’s Finale alla Schumann op.83, Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s Suite in G major P.58, American composer Daniel Pinkham’s Sonata No. 1, and Tomaso Albinoni and Remo Giazotto’s Adagio in G.
Voloshina explained that the ensemble worked closely with Robson to build the music arrangement and craft a repertoire between the group’s diverse set of instru-
ments. She described him as a “fabulous” performer.
Robson’s love for music began at a young age, playing piano at age 6 and taking up organ studies at 13. He obtained his first positions as a church organist while he was in high school and went on to study at Oberlin College with an emphasis in organ and French before switching his major to piano.
He’s studied with French pianist Yvonne Loriod in Paris; performed organ recitals ranging from the works of Buxtehude and Bach to Messiaen; worked as a coach and opera assistant for the Los Angeles Opera; taught at CalArts, Chapman University, CSUF and USC; and performed for LA Philharmonic, including an appearance at Disney Hall playing Arvo Pärt’s Annum per annum for the orchestra’s Minimalist Jukebox.
Robson’s compositions include Dances and Dirges for piano, clarinet and cello; the soprano cycle “A Child of Air” recorded by Patricia Prunty; the piano cycle 24 Preludes for the Left Hand; Trio Botanica for Three Bassoons; and Three Pieces for Chamber Orchestra.
Since 2015, he’s been an organist for St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Altadena, home of the May 21 Melodia Mariposa concert, which will give young classical performers the chance to play alongside him.
The young performers include Haiming Wu, who will perform Mozart’s “Laudate Dominum” and Lili Boulanger’s “Pie Jesu,” and Anna Yoo, who will perform a violin solo of Eugène Ysaÿe’s Sonata 3 “Ballade.”
Wu is a soprano earning a Master of Music degree in vocal arts and opera from the USC Thornton School of Music. She previously studied at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where she performed with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. She is also a former member of the Shangyin Opera House’s young artist’s program, Ying Cai Zhu Fei, and has sung and had master classes with pianist Hartmut Höll, baritone Sherrill Milnes and soprano Maria Zouves.
Yoo is a 2023 prizewinner of the Pasadena Rotary Club Dan Stover music competition and Pasadena Showcase Instrumental Competition. She has been passionate about
violin since she was 5 years old and has studied under violinists Aimée Kreston, Fabiola Kim and Robert Lipsett of the Colburn Academy.
She was the invited soloist to play the Bach double violin concerto with the LASI orchestra at 9 years old and has since played with the Bellflower Symphony, the OCC orchestra and the La Canada High School orchestra and attended Center Stage Strings, Bowdoin Music Festival and Sounding Point Academy.
“We’re very excited to have these young artists and to help them because they’re super talented,” Voloshina said. “We have this amazing group of people, string players, who are fabulous, then we have an amazing organ player, Mark Robson, and
we have young artists.”
Voloshina’s hope for the future is to continue to showcase local talent, uplift young artists and build on the work that Melodia Mariposa done in its communities.
“As a new nonprofit, this year we will have almost 14 concerts,” she said. “We had a benefit concert for Ukraine in August, and all our communities support in everything (we do). … The Altadena Rotary Club is supporting us, the City of Los Angeles Parks and Recreation and Altadena Chamber of Commerce are supporting us, and the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. The whole community is coming together. “I just love what we do … supporting young musicians and bringing in the best of the best.”

Artisans and studio artists inspired by the arts and crafts movement of the late 19th century will be highlighted at the Pasadena Artazan Show Saturday, May 20, and Sunday, May 21, at the Pasadena Convention Center.
Around 175 exhibitors will sell artwork and handicrafts, including paintings, woodwork pieces, clothing, jewelry and home décor items. A few vendors will offer artisan food items.
The show will also have live music and wine and chocolate tastings.
“Of course, it’s great shopping, but it’s also an experience to come there, mingle and have a good time,” said Casey Kennerson, show director.
The event is organized by Garan Beadagio LLC, which organizes about a dozen art shows annually in California and Arizona.
The Artazan market is one of the com-
pany’s newer shows. A similar show in Pasadena stopped in 2019.
“The artists wanted to bring the show back. So, we’re picking this one up and continuing it forward,” Kennerson said. “We are building on that, building a new show. … I think it’s a perfect market. Pasadena is all about the arts and crafts movement.”
Kennerson said the show combines the traditional and the modern.
“It’s bringing in the new with the old, keeping traditions alive but bringing in new items with that and new techniques,” Kennerson said.
Many of the artisans have been doing their craft for decades, but there are some who just started during the height of the pandemic.
“Maybe they had it in their mind to do it for a long time, but that was the push they needed when they were staying home, to go ahead and get that started,” Kennerson said.
There is a mixture of artists from the Los Angeles and Pasadena area, other parts of California and out of state.
The show offers an interactive experience, where attendees can learn more about the art forms and designs.
During the event, artisans will offer demos of wire wrapping, earring making, block printing and decorative painting.
Children can paint during a watercolor workshop.
Kennerson said the show is family friendly and encourages people of all ages to engage with art.
“We want all generations to come and see so they learn and can be lifelong patrons of the arts,” Kennerson said.
During the show, some of the artists will showcase their processes.
“It’s an educational experience. You can see how different things are made. They have different stages of it set up,” Kennerson said.
Kennerson’s family has a history of making artisan jewelry, going back to her grandma. She makes jewelry, and her sister, who helps her with the events, is a painter.
“It’s been a lifelong love of everything handmade, and I’m passing that on to my daughter now,” Kennerson said.
The event has a wide variety of exhibitors.
David Ortega of Heirlooms Etc. makes mantel clocks inspired by the arts and crafts movement in Menifee. He often incorporates craftsman elements into his clocks.
“I will look not only at the homes but at the furniture and the design elements, and I try to incorporate that into my clocks,” Ortega said.
“An example would be trapezoid shapes. Sometimes, it might be the proportions, the top of the clock. I make it stick out just a little bit. The overhang for the lids on the clocks, if I just do it a little bit, it creates a certain look and feel.”
Ortega makes his clocks as well as the copper work for clock pieces and pendulums.
Sometimes, he will incorporate tiles
made by other artists. He looks for independent artists who have their own niche.
He uses Birdseye Maple Veneer for his clock faces, on which he laser-etches number designs.
“I’m putting a piece of wood into a laser machine and letting it burn in my numbers. The machine is doing all the work, but the number designs I create myself,” Ortega said.
Ortega worked in law enforcement for 25 years and did woodworking as a side hobby for many years. Since retiring almost four years ago, he has been able to pursue it full time.
“For me, since I’m retired, the primary motivator is my love for the craft. It gives me an excuse to go out into the shop and make things,” Ortega said.
and scarves.
Luciano started Boho Genie last year, but she worked in fashion design and product development throughout her career.
He displays and sells his clocks at juried art shows, galleries and fairs.
Ortega’s father, who ran a boys club workshop in Redlands, taught him how to work with wood at age 12.
“He showed me the basics and was probably letting me use power tools I shouldn’t have been using at that age,” Ortega said. “But that’s what piqued my interest, and from there, I had wood shop throughout junior high school and high school. Once I got out of high school, over the years, I started accumulating tools little by little. Now, I have a dedicated wood shop here at home, and I work out of my home-based shop.”
Over the years, he has built a variety of furniture, including bookshelves, entertainment centers and built-in cabinetry.
His interest in clocks started around 2014, after seeing plans for a mantel clock in a woodworking magazine. This inspired him to start making and selling clocks, and it grew from there.
“I came up with different design ideas, and from there, it just evolved. I don’t think that I ever sat down and planned on a business model that focused on clocks, but that’s what it turned into,” Ortega said.
Another vendor at the Artazan show, Janine Luciano of Laguna Beach-based Boho Genie makes creative clothing designs inspired by the styles of the 1970s. She designs tops, skirts, kimonos, shrugs
“In design, I worked for companies that had an established brand and look,” Luciano said.
“I had to come in and design for them at their price point, for their customer. In product development, that was a specific client I worked with. Now what I’m doing is something very, very different. I’m using vintage saris as fabric, primarily silks, and I drape them on my dress form. That makes them a little bit different. It’s not a flat-pattern method.”
Luciano drew inspiration from the fashions that she wore in the 1970s.
“I really take a lot from the 1970s, how we used to dress in those days. We just wore jeans and a T-shirt, but we always had something pretty on top. I love athleisure and all of that, but I think it’s also nice to have something pretty on to make you feel good,” Luciano said.
She sews everything by hand, which can take some time. She said looking for the right fabrics for her pieces can be time-consuming as well.
She finds fabrics by searching in different places.
“I go to vintage shows that have fabrics. I’ve found a lot of things through that. I also scour thrift shops that I know, and I find things, wash them, and remake a scarf into something different by adding chains or lace, just to add a little extra to it,” Luciano said.

The Glendale Youth Orchestra will present “An American in Paris” on Sunday, May 21.
The show features works inspired by the theater, ballet and opera. Works will include Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” overture; Prokofiev’s “Romeo & Juliet”; and Mascagni’s intermezzo from “Cavaliera rusticana” and Gershwin’s “An American in Paris.”
Alongside these works, the Glendale Youth Orchestra will welcome two of its recent winners of the annual concerto competition. Madeline Son (La Canada), violin, will perform Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole, which helped make Spanish themes in music popular. Associate concertmaster Valerie Chen (Valencia) will perform the most-popular violin concerto of the Romantic era, Violin Concerto No. 2 by Wieniawski.
This concert is sponsored by a grant from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts.
The GYO is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture.
The GYO is by the California Arts Council through the Creative Youth Development Grant.
Known for his “keen sense of timing, charisma, and leadership,” conductor Henry Shin is steadily building a reputation as one of the most versatile conductors of his generation. Since 2015, Shin has also served as director of orchestras at Pasadena City College. A strong proponent of bringing music to underserved youth in Los Angeles, he is the music director and conductor of the nationally acclaimed Harmony Project Orchestras, Hollywood, the Valley Philharmonic Orchestra in Porter Ranch and with the Kadima Conservatory Philharmonic in Pacoima. Shin was appointed music director and conductor of the GYO in 2019.
Shin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Berkeley and a master’s degree in conducting from the USC Flora L. Thornton School of Music and is currently completing
his doctoral studies at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.
The 16-year-old Chen started playing the violin at the age of 8. She is studying with Ji Young An.

Pasadena middle schools Octavia E. Butler Magnet and Eliot Arts Magnet have unveiled their newly renovated libraries.
During recent ceremonies, students at Octavia E. Butler Magnet and Eliot Arts Magnet explored their refurbished libraries for the first time, discovering new comfortable seating, creative spaces, books and shelving. As a continuation of this program, the school libraries will also receive computers and possibly virtual reality technology in the future.
The library makeovers were completed with the backing of the College Football Playoff Foundation with support from the Pasadena Educational Foundation and the Tournament of Roses. Through this long-standing partnership, the Pasadena Educational Foundation has awarded grants to Pasadena Unified School District educators, supporting projects bene-
fiting countless local students over the last few years.
“We are honored to partner with the
Tournament of Roses and the Pasadena Educational Foundation in support of resources and technology for teachers in Pasadena,” said Britton Banowsky, executive director of the College Football Playoff Foundation. “We know that revitalizing these spaces for a better teaching environment will make a significant difference in student achievement outcomes for years to come.”
The unveilings began with marching band performances and festive ribbon-cutting ceremonies with students, staff and Pasadena Unified School District dignitar-
ies in attendance. During the opening at Eliot Arts Magnet, an eighth-grade history class was invited to explore the new space.
“They had a blast. They were just blown away,” Eliot Arts Magnet Principal Dr. Benita Scheckel said. “I think it’s going to inspire them. This will give our students more spaces to work together.”
The renovations were a much-needed change at the magnet schools, whose libraries were outdated and underserving.
“The library has beautiful bones. I call it the Beauty and the Beast library. It’s gorgeous, but it didn’t look like a modern space that’s student centered and collaborative. So now we have all of that,” Scheckel said.
As information hubs and meeting places at the schools, the new libraries will also benefit faculty, staff and parents who will utilize the newly improved conference spaces.
“At the Tournament, we recognize and celebrate creative collaboration among changemakers to address the communities’ most pressing issues,” said Tournament President Alex Aghajanian. “PUSD is dedicated to developing students into becoming technologically literate problem solvers, logical thinkers and innovators. They have continued to adapt and found creative ways to engage the community, and they deserve support from community partners more than ever.”
Nestled at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains in Altadena, Stratford School is teaching more than just reading, writing and arithmetic. Students are learning kindness.
Students at Stratford School’s Altadena Allen campus were awarded the 2023 Stratford Cares Award for their philanthropic work in the community. The preschool through middle school was selected from 28 other Stratford campuses in California for its commitment to community service.
Students and families partnered with the Assistance League of Pasadena, a nonprofit organization providing support to families in the community, providing school supplies, new uniforms and clothes to 500 students from underserved communities. The award included a $500 prize, which the school donated to the Assistance League of Pasadena.
“The program captures and celebrates the yearly generosity, caring and kindness of our students here in Stratford Altadena as they embody the principles outlined in our core value of REACH: respect, excellence, always improving, collaborative culture and high expectations,” said Patrizia Ribaya, vice principal at the Altadena campus.
“The annual $500 Stratford Cares Award acknowledges the giving back spirit of campus fundraising and outreach events to help support deserving organizations within our local, regional and worldwide communities.”
The award was created in honor of Pat Dorsey, who worked as Stratford’s home office purchasing manager for many years until her passing in 2020. She lived by the motto “only kindness matters.”
The Stratford Altadena student council spent many Fridays researching charities before coming across the Assistance League. It was vital for them to give back
locally to other school-age children.
“The students wanted to help these children and other students because they recognize how fortunate they are to have more than what they need and be provided with basic necessities and school supplies with ease, “Ribaya said.
“We’re a private school, and we have the funding and families to provide that assistance. We have the responsibility to provide that kind of assistance because we are capable of doing it.”
Stratford students participated in three Assistance League programs serving young children: Operation School Bell, School Supplies for Success, and the Bear Hugs program. Operation School Bell provides each child it serves with new school clothing, school supplies, grooming products, a backpack, sneakers, a book, and a board game or small toy to keep them confidently attending school.
School Supplies for Success has a similar mission, delivering much-needed school supplies to elementary, middle and high school students.
The Bear Hugs program began in 2008 and provides teddy bears to neglected or abused children. Volunteers deliver bears to local agencies and hospitals.
The kids worked diligently to collect supplies and worked with the Assistance League to create care packages for underserved students.
“Partnerships like this are integral. Here at Stratford Altadena, we believe that we have a responsibility to extend our core value of service leadership. The more we extend help to others and other schools, the more we can really capture and embody that mission. It shows integrity — practicing what you preach,” Ribaya said.
Throughout the year, the school also supports charities like the Kids Heart Challenge, the American Red Cross, the Ronald McDonald House in Pasadena, and the Elizabeth House.
