Trust Issues
At Trusted HouseSitters, who do you trust?
By Ellen Snortland Pasadena Weekly ColumnistAdear friend of mine, JM, is one of the most “traveling-est” people I know. “Who takes care of your dogs when you’re away?” I ask during our weekly dinner at Altadena’s El Patrón, a homey restaurant plastered with Mexican bric-a-brac. Finishing her bite, she says, “I have a housesitter who stays with them while I travel.” “Isn’t that expensive?” I say. “It sure is… but my peace of mind is worth it. I pay her nicely, and the dogs love her.”
I have done my share of traveling: house and dog care is the priority. Paying for housesitting has never been in my budget, given that the lion’s share of my travel has been pro bono due to the philanthropic nature of my work. The women and girls served by impoverished organizations that request Beauty Bites Beast can’t afford to pay my expenses, let alone the cost of leaving my critters in good hands.
informed of via text. JM had engaged a plumber from afar, then explicitly explained — again, via text — the situation to the sitter and asked them not to take a shower until the plumber arrived. The sitter from H-E double hockey sticks deliberately took a shower anyway. Upon arrival at her front door. JM found her dogs loose and barking in the backyard, which was prohibited. The mistrusted housesitter told one lie after another, including having her “cousin” at the house who supposedly was only visiting from a local Airbnb. As JM entered, she heard one of them say, “The house smells like (expletive). She’s coming home soon; hurry!”

My late sister, Alane, loved getting out of frozen Troy, New York, and staying here while we traveled, primarily to get her biannual quota of dog snuggles. For one trip, Alane wasn’t available. A friend mentioned Trusted HouseSitters, an online “matchmaker” for people who want their domestic responsibilities taken care of economically while traveling. On the other side of the equation, people who want to travel but don’t want to pay for hotels can sign up as sitters. It can be a dynamic win-win arrangement. On the other hand, the results can suck.
Back to my meal with JM, “Have you heard of Trusted HouseSitters?” I ask. She says, “Vaguely; it kind of rings a bell.” So, I launched into an impassioned promotion of Trusted HouseSitters, how the married couple who took care of our home while we were away was kind and trustworthy: veritable Girl and Boy Scouts of the world. “I would use that service again in a heartbeat; give it a try!” She was reluctant, and I should have left it at that.
JM paid the membership fee, joined Trusted HouseSitters, got vetted, and then found someone who wanted to stay in her home and care for her dogs. After a great trip, JM came home to chaos: raw sewage was all over her floors due to a sewer line break she’d been
As if that wasn’t bad enough, the sitter threatened JM with a lawsuit claiming she had contracted cholera while staying at the house. What?! Yikes! Oh, and JM had to replace her floors, then pay through the nose for a paid sitter to come because she was traveling again in the next few days. (The Horror Sitter had originally scheduled herself to do that stint, too.) It was a lose-lose situation, even though the service insures its users. JM was eventually reimbursed for the floors and the cost of the emergency housesitter.
I texted JM, “I feel so guilty for pushing you into using Trusted HouseSitters; if I hadn’t, you wouldn’t have had to replace your floors.” “It’s OK; it’s not your fault. I guess I feel funny about getting something for nothing anyway.” I didn’t think quickly enough to respond to the “something for nothing” remark.
When Trusted HouseSitters works as intended, it embodies quid pro quo. We’re signed up to be both a “sittee” and “sitter.” We haven’t been sitters yet because we have been only half-hearted about it. When we were toying with traveling to New Zealand, I entered the dates we wanted, and there weren’t any great matches. One homeowner ran a farm, which meant we would have spent our time away at Old Mcdonald’s … E-I-E-I-NO! From experience, I knew I would be responsible for critters from dawn to dusk; I’d also fret about the animals. I passed.
I recently returned from a conference in Mexico where I was a volunteer. In anticipation of the event, I went to TrustedHousesitters. com and entered our dates; we got a few matches. I Zoomed with the best candidate, Fernando Lopez, and bada bing! A perfect match. Fernando is an animal lover, wants to live in the Los Angeles area and (wait for it…) pursue an acting career. Before he commits to moving into his own place, he wants to experience different communities in this vast region. He already sat a home in the Hollywood Hills and will soon be “tasting” Santa Monica and Downtown LA next. However, after 10 days in our home in Altadena, he is now a huge fan of our community and can see himself living here. And the dogs loved him — a win-win!

Minimum Wage Increase
Pasadena rate to jump to $16.93 by July 1
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorAfter a series of prescribed annual increases, Pasadena’s minimum wage, currently adjusted by an amount equal to the change in the consumer price index, will increase from $16.11 per hour to $16.93 per hour on Saturday, July 1. The new wage rate will apply to all businesses regardless of size and will remain in effect until June 30, 2024, when it will be adjusted again.
The Pasadena City Council adopted a Minimum Wage Ordinance on March 14, 2016, meaning the city’s minimum wage can differ from the state’s and can increase at a higher rate. The California minimum wage law does not preempt Pasadena’s
minimum wage ordinance.
On July 1, 2016, Pasadena’s minimum wage rose to $10.50 per hour, then jumped to $12 per hour on July 1, 2017, before increasing again to $13.25 per hour on July 1, 2018. By July 1, 2020, the minimum wage had reached $15 per hour, giving qualified nonprofits and businesses with 25 or fewer employees an additional year to comply with the increases.
As part of Pasadena’s Minimum Wage Ordinance, the city manager was required to present a report to the city council summarizing the impact of the citywide increase on poverty, unemployment, job creation and local businesses. The city contracted two independent consultants, Dr. Edward E. Leamer and Dr. Michael
For the best homes, all signs point to
Reich, to generate impact studies.
Analyzing how Pasadena fared after its past citywide minimum wage increases, Reich’s “Pasadena’s Minimum Wage Policy, Effects on Workers, Businesses, and the Local Economy, Jan. 25, 2019,” report found that “the local economy has continued to grow, and at about the same rate as Los Angeles County and the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. No breaks in trend occur at the time of the minimum wage increases. This result is not surprising, since the principal effects of minimum wage policies are concentrated in only a small number of industries. This result is also not surprising because Pasadena is embedded in a much larger economic region.”
The report, which used “difference-in differences” computations to study the city’s industries that are least exposed (have high average weekly wages) and that are the most exposed (have low average weekly wages) to minimum wage increases, went on to state that Pasadena’s minimum wage rises have increased the earnings of low-wage workers without visibly reducing their employment levels. Reich added that the net effects of minimum wages on employment were much small than some observers had suggested. His conclusion was that his study should “mitigate concerns” about the possible negative effects of Pasadena’s minimum wage policy. He also said that, if minimum wages were to increase to higher
levels in nearby cities like LA, “some Pasadena businesses may find it more difficult to recruit and retain workers.”
Edward Leamer’s “Estimates on the Impact of Pasadena’s Minimum Wage Ordinance, Jan. 17, 2019,” report studied the impact of the local minimum wage on low-wage earners and industries. It found that there was a “significant negative estimate of the impact of minimum wages on the number of hair/nail salons (a 10% increase in minimum wages is associated with a 24% decline in the number of salons) and also a negative impact of the Pasadena increment on the number of jobs in limited-service restaurants. We also obtain negative estimates of the impact of minimum wages on employment and establishments in most industries, though considerable statistical uncertainty.”
Leamer added that the limited-service restaurant industry is the only low wage sector in which the study found a “significant negative” impact of the Pasadena minimum wage on employment, while all other low-wage sectors display “statistically insignificant” impact.
“Be careful not to interpret the words ‘statistically insignificant’ to mean ‘no ef-
fect,’” he clarified. “A better interpretation of those words is: ‘The employment effects at the industry level are difficult to measure with no clear assessment of magnitude so far.’ However, we do see that an increase in minimum wages is associated with less (not more) employment in many of the industries that have been examined in this report, which raises the effective statistical significance of each estimate separately.”
Leamer’s report was conducted using three “dependent” variables observed quarterly at a regional and industrial level: earnings per employee, employment, and number of establishments. The variables were then analyzed using “dynamic” models that allowed the impact of minimum wage increases to be spread over time.
“Our model deviates from the previous literature in a number of ways, most notably, by taking into account the dynamic nature of our data: we are able to say how much of the impact of minimum wage we expect to occur in the first quarter,” Leamer explained. “(For example,) we find evidence that 50% of the impact of minimum wages on earnings is realized in the first
The Pasadena City Council adopted a Minimum Wage Ordinance on March 14, 2016.
quarter, while only 20% of the impact of minimum wages on employment of on establishments is realized in the first quarter.”
The report also raised situational examples of the wage increase’s effects on local businesses and residents. For instance, if customers going to a Pasadena business live in Pasadena and the workers of the businesses live outside of the city, then the minimum wage is a contribution by Pasadena residents to people who live outside of the city.
“This is not a bad thing, but it needs to be understood,” Leamer described. “If the
Pasadena customers are wealthy ‘tourists’ who live elsewhere and the workers are Pasadena residents, then the tourists would be making a contribution to help out Pasadena residents. From the standpoint of local government, that seems like an appealing outcome.”
Though their conclusions differed in tone regarding the effects of minimum wage increases in Pasadena, both Leamer and Reich’s reports expressed that more time and data is needed to form a more certain conclusion of the minimum wage increase’s impacts on the Pasadena community.

Crowning Achievement
Tony Awards name Pasadena Playhouse an outstanding regional theater
By Bridgette M. Redman Pasadena Weekly Contributing WriterDanny Feldman is excellent at keeping a secret. For weeks, he kept under wraps one of the biggest, most exciting news in the history of the Pasadena Playhouse — that it won the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theaters.
The award, which recognizes theaters who display “a continuous level of artistic achievement contributing to the growth of theater nationally,” according to the American Theatre Critics Association, was unveiled May 23.
For a theater founded in 1917 that has been designated the official state theater of California, the award recognizes the sometimes surprising survival and success of a theater that has been through ups and downs.
Feldman, the Playhouse’s producing artistic director, got the news the day after the theater opened “A Little Night Music,” a musical employing 100 local artists that
he described as one of the biggest undertakings of the Playhouse in its modern history. It was the final full production in a season that celebrated Stephen Sondheim and included full productions of “Into the Woods” and “Sunday in the Park with George” along with concerts, community singalongs and other events.
Just as he embarked on a vacation, the Broadway League’s call interrupted his drive out of town.
“It was the morning after ‘A Little Night Music’ opened,” Feldman said. “We had a triumphant opening. It was a pretty out-ofbody experience to get that information and to have to keep it secret for a little bit.”
While he was able to mobilize in-house staff members with the news, they couldn’t reveal it as the Broadway League negotiated with the striking members of the Writers Guild of America to determine whether the live Tony Awards would go forward on June 11, when the award will
be presented. With that issue resolved, Feldman and the Playhouse could share the news with the world.
The prize includes a $25,000 grant. The Playhouse joins an elite list that includes only one other Los Angeles theater, the Mark Taper Forum, which received the award in 1977, the second year it was given, and only three other Southern California theaters, the last one being La Jolla Playhouse in 1993.
Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, and Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, released a joint statement saying, “We are thrilled to present the 2023 Regional Theatre Tony Award to Pasadena Playhouse. Pasadena Playhouse has made a significant impact — on both a local and global level by developing some of the most innovative and inspiring works and artists.”
The sentiment was reflected by local and state-level politicians. Gov. Gavin Newsom released a statement praising the Playhouse, its legacy and its leadership.
“Channeling an unparalleled spirit of community, creativity and innovation, Pasadena Playhouse has been redefining theater arts throughout the country and beyond for more than a century. This much-deserved award recognizes the extraordinary legacy of this world-renowned institution and all the dedicated artists, theater makers and supporters who help bring to life impactful stories for the ages.”
Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo called it a highly appropriate recognition for the 106-year-old theater. California State Assembly Member Chris Holden said there was no better theater to receive the award.
“This congratulations serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of preserving and honoring history and the resilience of a community that stands together,” Holden said.
“For years, I’ve fought alongside members of Pasadena Playhouse to keep this community asset alive and thriving, so it is with great sentiment that I say, ‘Bravo!’ Pasadena Playhouse has poured into our community even when their glass was not completely full.”
The Playhouse was founded by Gilmor Brown and residents of Pasadena raised money to build the now-historic building. George Bernard Shaw called it the “Athens of the West.” It was home to the pre-
mieres of many American classics from the country’s best-known playwrights, to shows that would go on to Broadway and to a school that trained a generation of actors, including Charles Bronson, Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, Sally Struthers and Raymond Burr.
Brown created theater-in-the-round staging techniques and became the first American theater to produce the entire Shakespeare canon. Twenty years after Pasadena Playhouse was founded, the state Legislature unanimously voted to make it the official State Theater of California in 1937, a designation it still holds. Its fortunes changed after the death of its founder and it closed for 17 years before being relaunched in 1986. Sheldon Epps led the organization for 20 years, including through a bankruptcy that helped the theater survive. Epps became known for producing new musicals (including the Broadway-bound “Sister Act,” “Purlie” and “Baby It’s You”), revivals of important plays and musical, growing the education program, developing new works and celebrating diverse content and casting.
Feldman took over in 2017 amid a financial crisis that threatened to close the theater and soon was juggling one of the biggest modern challenges to live theater — the COVID-19 pandemic.
For many who have helped the theater survive and thrive, the award felt like a validation of their actions.
“It just felt like a wonderful, cathartic moment for so many people for so long,” Feldman said. “Not just my time here — but Sheldon’s 20 years here and before that (for those who) just fought to keep the place going. We’ve been bankrupt a few times along the journey, but it was always this community that came together to keep it going, whether it was closed and they were trying to reopen it, whether it was trying to take it to the next level or they’re just trying to keep the doors open. This community has always circled this building and taken care of it.”
The Playhouse is billed as one of the country’s most prolific theaters, having staged thousands of original productions, including premieres of works by Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, Suzan Lori Parks and hundreds more. The league recognized the Playhouse for continuing to advance American theater and serving as a
hub for today’s top theater makers.
Feldman described Pasadena as a community that can “punch above its weight class” with so many world-class institutions that are unusual for a city of Pasadena’s size. He hopes this award will assist in their efforts to continue to grow the base of people who value live theater in their community.
“It’s a large spotlight on us in a way that we haven’t had in a long time — or, forever, actually,” Feldman said. “At the Playhouse, we really believe in the power of theater and want to make theater for everyone our mission. This gives us a new tool in that we have a lot of eyes on us.”
The award, he said, honors everyone who has made the Pasadena Playhouse what it is from its community supporters, artists, arts administrators, production professionals, volunteers, audiences and all those who came before them.
Feldman said he believes that all visitors are aware of the Playhouse’s beauty and penchant for extraordinary theater. Those who work there know it is a special place to make theater, he said. Now, he hopes the award will make more people aware of those things.
The future of the Playhouse, Feldman said, is to expand its audience base. He wants to see more people attending live theater not just at Playhouse but at all theaters in the greater LA area.
“We need folks to come in larger numbers,” Feldman said. “We need more people to come who maybe stopped coming after a while or those who have never been here. Hopefully, this is a landmark moment to grab attention and for people to give us a
look if they’ve never been here or a second look if they’ve come here before.”
The Tony Award casts a spotlight on the courageous work that the Playhouse has been doing to keep creating meaningful theater that takes risks.
“Audiences respond to big, bold things — things that are extraordinary things,” Feldman said. “What are the experiences you can only have in a room with your fellow community members that are unique to
that experience? Whether it’s a six-month Sondheim celebration where we’re coming together as a community exploring all these angles, or whether it’s us ripping out all the seats like we’ve done a couple of times and turned the theater into a nightclub or just a solo person on stage with a riveting performance like we have next season — it’s just about unbelievable, extraordinary experiences that stay with you long after the curtain comes down.”

Michel’Le Clairmont finds solace in her Pilates studio
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorWhen the father of actress, model and influencer Michel’Le Clairmont had double bypass surgery, she wanted to help him recover.
“His arteries were clogged 99.9%, and he almost died,” Clairmont says. “He was recovering and going to physical therapy, but he was getting injured there.”
Certified in Pilates, she developed a heart program for him — and it was a success.
“I could help him recover with the equipment,” she said. “I helped him change his lifestyle and he made a full recovery. He became healthier and stronger. He had core strength, so he was happy.”
That paved the way for Pasadena’s Pilates Mind Body Spirit, which combines physical movement with mindfulness and breathwork. It will celebrate its fourth anniversary from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 3, with local vendors and brands such as Lerin Activewear and Ubatuba Acai passing out acai bowls.
The studio will host reformer Pilates classes as well as hot mat Pilates classes; DJ Noah Kickback will perform. Other goodies are courtesy of Petit Pot, Naked Nature and Ocean’s Halo Seaweed.
“These four years have been amazing, helping different people with heart condi-
tions, breast cancer, or pro athletes rehabbing from different injuries,” she said.
Pilates Mind Body Spirit is a premier reformer Pilates and optional hot and nonhot mat studio that offers a variety of Pilates programs that are suitable for different fitness goals.
It has classes and one-on-one private reformer training with specialized programming.
The Pilates group classes have an array of Pilates reformer and mat classes at different levels, as well as Pilates reformer arms, abs and glutes, and reformer Pilates and reformer cardio. Pilates Mind Body Spirit is the world’s first chromotherapy Pilates studio.
She was introduced to Pilates after tearing her meniscus and ACL, the latter of which occurred after returning to soccer too early.
“I played competitive soccer for 17-plus years, and I was a competitive gymnast for 15-plus years,” she said.
“I was so hardcore into working out. It wasn’t what I was used to. But it is hard if you do it right and it’s so good for your body. That changed my trajectory from soccer to Pilates.”
After graduating with a degree in psychology with a concentration in neurology from Azusa Pacific University, she was immediately drawn to the discipline’s fo-

“When I was certified, I was connecting Pilates with psychology and neurology and it encompassed more of what I wanted to learn and how I was teaching Pilates,” she said.
Helping clients return to form is chill inducing for Clairmont.
“I have a client who was in a car accident,” she said. “She tried chiropractic treatments, acupuncture, massage, she did private Pilates me and after the sessions, she just started crying. She said, ‘I have never been able to release and feel so good. Thank you so much. I don’t feel the pain.’”
Soon, Clairmont is looking to expand her team and grow the business. She wants to create a one-stop wellness center with
Pilates and nutrition, as well as massage, acupuncture, chiropractors.
“I want people to keep learning about their bodies,” she said.
“A lot of people who come to us, they’re used to just working out to feel the burn. They’re not connecting with their body. They’re not understanding what they should be feeling, like the muscles releasing. What we’re focusing on is expanding our online platform. But with our fourth anniversary, we’re doing a rebrand and relaunch.”

St. Barnabas Episcopal Church to celebrate centennial
By Leah Schwartz Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterPasadena’s oldest historically Black episcopal church, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, celebrates its centennial, reflecting on 100 years of history and looking forward to a new era of growth and inclusion.
From 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 11, the parish will celebrate its 100th anniversary with parishioners, dignitaries and community members. The occasion is themed “Still We Rise,” inspired by the late author, poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou.
The bishop of the Los Angeles Diocese, the Rt. Rev. John Harvey Taylor will preside over the church service before the celebratory program and luncheon. The church has extended invitations to U.S. Reps. Judy Chu and Adam Schiff; Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo; Pasadena Councilmember Justin Jones; California Assembly Member Chris Holden; and Assembly Candidate Phlunte’ Riddle.
“Celebrating our past gives us the strength and the power to manifest God’s greatness in the future,” vestry member Marco White said. “The past 100 years was more about surviving, and the next 100 years is about thriving.”
Marco White is a lifelong parishioner whose family has been involved in the church for four generations. “I feel as though I’ve never been to church,” White said, “This an extremely close-knit church family. The church is very much centered on love.” Churchgoers have coined the phrase “love, St. Barnabas style.” The “style,” White said, is “eternal and unconditional.”
Like most U.S. cities, Pasadena’s past is marred by racial injustice and discrimination. In the early 1900s, public life in Pasadena was segregated, including the Tourna-
ment of Roses and All Saints Episcopal Church. Following the Great Migration from the South in the late 1800s, people of African American descent who settled in the Pasadena area were forced to create their own communities and houses of worship.
Excluded from All Saints Episcopal Church and determined to practice their faith, eight African American women began hosting worship circles in their homes, founding St. Barnabas in 1923. Among these founding matriarchs were Ellensteen Bevans, Rosebud Mims and Georgia Weatherton, whose homes on Del Mar Street served as makeshift churches. The church’s rose garden is dedicated to their faith and perseverance in the face of racism and intolerance.
“History has taught us a lot,” the Rev. V.R. Marianne Zahn said. “At St. Barnabas, we will always lead with love. All are welcome here.”
To this day, St. Barnabas continues to be a “historically Black and predominantly Black church family as well as beautifully diverse and reflective of the Pasadena Community,” White said. For 100 years, the church has been a pillar of the Pasadena community — spiritually, socially and politically.
Currently, the church hosts weekly Alcoholics Anonymous groups and Spanish-speaking Catholic and Pentecostal congregations. St. Barnabas also grants scholarships to Pasadena Unified School District graduates, maintains a community food pantry, provides meals for Union Station residents and sponsors the Northwest Pasadena Little League.
Rooted in the past, but looking ahead, the church’s “future is one where we both celebrate the strength of our history and our traditions and adapt to the transformation of the future,” White said.

Monsterpalooza
Con spotlights makeup, props, special effects artists
By Laura Latzko Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterMonsterpalooza began in 2008 in New Jersey as a meetup for makeup artists, prop makers and horror fans. Although it has since expanded and moved to Pasadena to include celebrity photo ops and panels, it continues to highlight makeup artists who work behind the scenes in TV and film.
This year, the event is Friday, June 2, to Sunday, June 4, at the Pasadena Convention Center, boasting celebrity guests, more than 450 exhibitors, a monster museum, cosplay opportunities and makeup demos.
Among this year’s celebrity guests will be Amie Donald from “M3GAN” and “Sweet Tooth,” Skeet Ulrich from the
“Scream” franchise, Danny Lloyd from “The Shining” and “Doctor Sleep,” Crypt Keeper voice actor John Kassir, Fairuza Balk from “The Craft,” Kristin Bauer from “True Blood” and “Once Upon a Time,” Tom Savini from “Dawn of the Dead” and “Creepshow,” and Allan Trautman and Miguel Núñez Jr. from “The Return of the Living Dead.”
There will be many actors from the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise, including Freddy Krueger actor Robert Englund. The show will also have two Jason Voorhees actors, Kane Hodder and Ken Kirzinger.
This year’s lineup will also spotlight actors from “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” and the “Hocus Pocus” franchise. This includes Doug Jones, who played Bil-
1st SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH SUNDAY, June 4th 8AM - 3PM RAIN OR SHINE
ly Butcherson in both “Hocus Pocus” films.
Many of the celebrity guests will take part in panels.
At 8 p.m. Friday, see a “Freddy vs. Jason” panel featuring Englund and Kirzinger in honor of the film’s 20th anniversary.
“That will be a fun little moment for fans to get to watch those two actors return to the stage together and speak about that movie,” show creator Elliot Brodsky said.
On Friday evening, “Witch Witch Won?” will be screened followed by a presentation with cast and crew. The show centers around drag performers rehearsing for a horror-themed show and running into trouble after trying to summon a demon using a thrift store spell book.
At noon Saturday, “Scream and Cry” cast members will host a special presentation. The web series features E.G. Daily, best known for voicing Tommy Pickles in the “Rugrats” franchise.
Actors from the film “Hocus Pocus” will talk about their experience filming the cult classic during a panel at 3 p.m. Saturday.
There will also be an afterparty with music from Herway to Hell, an all-female AC/DC cover band at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. During the afterparty, Mike Elizalde from Spectral Motion, who worked on the “Hellboy” movies and “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” will be honored.
During the convention, guests can also see presentations on the cartoons of Fleischer Studios, the history of ’90s hor-
ror comics, the film “The Shining” and film producer Carl Laemmle Jr.
Presentations will focus on monster makeup, masks, props and special effects. On the show floor, makeup companies will give live demos, where they bring fantastical creatures to life.
“You can come at the start of the day, to see them start making someone into a creature, and then by the end of the day, they’re finished. You can see it progress from start to finish throughout the day,” Brodsky said.
The showroom will feature exhibitors displaying and selling collective toys, artwork, apparel and full-size hyper-realistic silicone sculptures.
Monsterpalooza Museum will house full-size creatures, hyper-realistic sculptures, and screen-used props and animatronics from popular films.
“For that, we always invite different effects shops to display what we usually refer to as ‘trophy pieces,’” Brodsky said.
“They are very proud of these works, and they’ll bring them into the museum area, which is a theatrically lit, dark, walk-thru exhibit where these special sculptures and paintings will be on display.”
An evolution
Brodsky said Monsterpalooza evolved from a collectors gathering with Halloween masks and props. Based in New York, he moved the event to California in 2009.
“I had always been into the genre as a child, and then as an adult, it wasn’t as common in my life,” Brodsky said.
“Then, when internet forums started to sprout up in the ’90s, I was able to reconnect with that childhood interest of horror movies and makeup and found other like-minded people. A lot of them worked in the film industry. … That was the start of the show was doing a fan meetup for that forum. A lot of those people were from California, so I thought let’s put it in their backyard.”
Growing up, Brodsky always loved classic characters such as Frankenstein’s Monster and the makeup from movies such as “Planet of the Apes.”
“When I was a kid, I would build all the model kits and make my own little movies with my neighbors and my friends. I was always interested in film and the process of how things are created,” Brodsky said.
When he reconnected with his interest as an adult, he made limited-run horror masks to wear himself and to feature on horror forums.
“I liked to channel my artistic side and create those sculptures. Usually, it was of characters who weren’t the norm. I wasn’t making Frankenstein or Michael Myers because that’s been done many times. I would pick more of an obscure character from ‘The Bride of Frankenstein,’ like Dr. Pretorius or some of the other characters that aren’t given that spotlight,” Brodsky said.
With the convention, he spotlights professionals in the industry who bring movie monsters and creatures to life.
“The convention really allowed me to be creative in a different sort of outlet,” Brodsky said.
“I’m able to put on an event for other people, but it’s also a reflection of all of the stuff I appreciated as a kid and also as an adult. The emphasis of the Monsterpalooza convention has always been the artists who are behind-the-scenes, the people who make the monsters, design the creatures and create all the concept work that people may or not know about.
“Sometimes, people don’t really think about the process of what it takes to create a superhero suit. When you are watching the movie, you don’t think about the monster you are watching. You don’t think about how it was created or all the work it takes to sculpt it and mold it and the person
who has to wear it. Being able to bring that to the fans and have that front and center is something I think is very special.”
Brodsky — who also hosts “Son of Monsterpalooza” in Burbank in October — attracts die-hard fans from around the world to his shows.
“I’m so happy that there are so many fans who have the same interests that I do. It really is a special thing that everybody comes together to celebrate this art form,” Brodsky said.
Brodsky said his shows are for people with different levels and types of fandom.
“It’s great because these conventions welcome people who are the most devoted to the average fan. You don’t have to love horror to have fun at a Monsterpalooza show,” he said.
“It’s not only horror stuff. It encompasses all of pop culture. There’s science fiction and superhero things. It’s all about the craftsmanship that goes on beyond the scenes of film. It’s not just exclusive to horror, even though that is a very strong theme,” Brodsky said.

eyes, and it sounded amazing. You captured her. There’s an essence of her in what you’re doing.’
“People were coming out of the woodwork asking if I ever thought about creating a Dolly Parton act. That’s where that encouragement started. So many of us, even if we have a great idea, doubt creeps in. I started having all this inner dialogue like this was too big for me. I don’t have time. I had all these excuses. How would I memorize all these songs?”
When 2020 rolled around, she wanted to do something “meaningful.” She and Parton are both sopranos with a lot of vibrato. There was something — or someone — that enabled her to create this tribute.
Bob Stane of the now-defunct Coffee Gallery Backstage gave Eberhardt her break. She recalled him complimenting
her band on its musicianship.
“He gave us six performances — once a month for six months,” she added.
“It allowed us to sell tickets, build a following and pay attention to the set list. It was like a workshop. You have a real interaction and feedback from the audience. After four performances, we locked in on the set list. I’m a big believer in designing an experience. You have to take them on a journey. You can’t just slap songs together. You take them on an emotional journey through the storytelling.”
The stories weave into the next one and that makes Eberhardt — and the audiences — happy.
“My purpose and intent are to not just sing songs, but to uplift, enlighten and inspire an audience,” she said. “It makes me proud that it’s having that effect.”

A Fresh Take
Love and family bonds unfold in classic play
By Bridgette M. Redman Pasadena Weekly Contributing WriterSometimes a handsome, shirtless guy can turn an entire small town upside down. So went William Inge’s “Picnic” in 1953 and so goes Eric Anderson’s “Back Porch,” based on the Inge classic. Anderson’s version, directed by Kelie McIver, is getting its world premiere at Victory Theatre Center from June 2 to July 9.
This time, however, instead of all the women adoring the sexy vagabond, it is a young man who falls in love with the handsome male stranger. It was an idea Anderson had been toying with since 2013.
“I had this idea of writing a gay ‘Picnic’ many years ago,” Anderson said. “It happened to coincide with the playwright William Inge’s 100th birthday. Inge was a closeted gay playwright of some significance. I was wondering if he lived in an-
other time and place, would he have written a gay play. It occurred to me how ‘Picnic’ could be transformed with a kind of funhouse mirror, where there was a homosexual relationship rather than a heterosexual relationship. From that, I got the idea of how to do it and things fell into place pretty easily.”
The play takes place in a small Kansas town in 1955 where “Picnic” is being filmed. Barney Opat (Karl Maschek) is the single father of two boys: 18-year-old Gary (Isaac W. Jay), who yearns to escape small-town Kansas life for a more glamorous existence, and energetic 13-year-old Del Wayne (Cody Lemmon). The handsome stranger (Jordan Morgan) is William Holden’s stunt double who arrives in town with the other all-star “Picnic” cast members. Holden played the part of Hal, the macho drifter at the center of “Picnic.”
Anderson, who was born and raised in
Kansas, remembers portions of “Picnic” being filmed a county away from his home.
“My family drove to the location one evening to take part in the ‘Neewollah’
scene on the river,” Anderson said. “I’ve been crazy about movies — and theater — ever since. With ‘Back Porch,’ I wanted to pay tribute to a significant American playwright who was also significantly closet-
ed.”
The play was scheduled to open in 2020, but was shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. Three years later, it is getting its opening. Anderson hopes the classic “Picnic” appeal will provide a foundation for people’s enjoyment of “Back Porch.”
“‘Picnic’ is a good story,” Anderson said. “It’s a romance, and I think Americans like romances, no matter how cynical they become. We like stories of strangers showing up and disrupting the lives of people and hopefully making things come out for the better.”
He’s hoping that the gay version of “Picnic” will resonate with audiences who are more sophisticated and can see the irony of “Back Porch” being based on another play and reflecting it in a gay context.
Anderson described “Back Porch” as a comedy about family relations as well as a romance between two fellows.
“The single father is a widow, he’s sort of put his heart on hold as a way of grieving for his wife,” Anderson said. “Even though it’s been many years, he’s
still stuck. He has two sons and he’s been steady, but not a close father to them. The arrival of the stranger into the family shakes those relationships, and as a result, they’re all three closer to each other by the end of the play rather than driven apart.”
Anderson and McIver, who is also from Kansas, attribute the play’s power to the characters.
“Back Porch is a love letter to William Inge, and it’s also a terrific ensemble piece in which each character has an interesting and beautiful arc,” McIver said. “I love them all and want to hang out with them.”
Anderson emphasized the importance of having his characters talk like ordinary people. He wanted to put assemble a humorous cast rather than take a grim or melodramatic approach.
“I would like to make clear that it is not a parody or camp,” Anderson said. “I appreciate both of those forms of entertainment a lot, but ‘Back Porch’ is not that. It’s a rather gentle, uncynical look at romantic relationships and family relationships.”

Celebrating New Wave
Retro sci-fi musical fetes the ’80s
By Bridgette M. Redman Pasadena Weekly Contributing WriterIt’s 1989 and a shy teenage girl is going to save the universe. Or so goes the cult musical “Starmites” with its new wave music vibe and a sci-fi setting.
Open Fist Theatre Company is reviving the family-friendly show — for those 8 and older — from Friday, June 2, to Saturday, July 8, at the Atwater Village Theater.
The show is under the direction of Scott Peterman, a recent New York transplant and technologist who incorporates projection mapping, AI-assisted animation and EDM-influenced digital orchestrations to breathe new life into this retro space-age story.
In “Starmites,” Eleanor creates a fantasy world from comic book characters and escapes into it, meeting the Starmites, guardian angels of Innerspace. She and their leader, Space Punk, challenge the evil Shak Graa to keep him from using a
musical instrument called “The Cruelty” that can destroy the universe.
Mix in Diva and her Banshees, kidnappings and a wedding with a disguised bride and the musical’s shenanigans emerge.
“I am a huge fan of shows that made it all the way to Broadway and shouldn’t have — musicals that are really fantastic, that have great scores and a unique vibe,” Peterman said.
“In today’s world, that would have been ‘Urinetown’ or ‘Avenue Q’ where they have Tony qualifying runs on Broadway and then they move right back to off Broadway.”
Peterman serves as a show and content director for such bands as Bon Jovi and Smashing Pumpkins and creates work using AI, code, projection mapping, sculpture and traditional theater techniques. Directing musicals, which he started doing in 10th grade, is his passion.
“I love things that are really fun and kind of silly but that have excellent scores and play better in small spaces,” Peterman said. “And I like to do them and not punch down, right? We’re not doing a spoof of ‘Starmites’ or a farce of ‘Starmites.’ We’re treating it very seriously.”
He points out that “Starmites” was a passion project for its creators, Barry Keating (lyrics, music and book) and Stuart Ross (book). They first presented it in 1980 and it took nine years to reach Broadway, where it ran for 60 performances.
A professor at Parsons School for Design, Peterman created and performed in the off-Broadway show “Sailor Man,” a dark, comedic commentary on violence, gender and media told through live, staged “Popeye” cartoons. It is work like that — and like what he is doing with “Starmites” at Open Fist — that Peterman said is the perfect marriage between traditional stagecraft and cutting-edge performance technology.
“I’ve done a lot of AI-driven plays long before AI was a buzzword — in the late aughts and early teens, because I’m also a technologist,” Peterman said. “I did a lot of plays where I would act across from AI versions of myself.”
He moved to Los Angeles to be closer to his writing partner, Cat Davis. They write primarily for animation, but both had a hankering to return to live theater. Davis, who is playing the role of Diva in “Star-
mites,” worked with Open Fist. She introduced Peterman to its artistic director, Martha Demson, and the subject of “Starmites” came up.
“Everybody loved the concept,” Peterman said. “We said, let’s just do it. Let’s hit the ground running. Let’s mount it in six weeks and get it up on its feet. And it has been an absolute crazy month this past month, but also probably the best month for the last five years for me.”
The cast is drawn from the Open Fist company and actors Peterman has worked with over the past 20 years. It stars Talia Gloster as Eleanor, Bradley Sharper as Space Punk and Rieves Bowers, Alex Hogy and Jasper Wong as the Starmites. Brendan Mulally is Shak Graa. The Banshees are played by Elle Engelman, Lindsey Moore Ford, Sarah Martellaro and Sophie Oda. Jack David Sharpe is also a part of the cast.
He suspects that some of the young cast members — particularly Gloster and Sharper — will be tomorrow’s LA stars.
“I’m astounded by the hard work that they put in every day and the quality of everyone’s singing,” Peterman said. “We’ve really got lightning in a bottle here.”
He has deeply held philosophies about projection use, determined not to turn them into a movie that belongs to other mediums. Instead, he integrates projections to be in conversation with what is happening onstage, so they aren’t just an-
other screen people stare at.
“It’s really more of a digital matte painting than it is animated,” Peterman said. “It lets us go to all these wild locations — this crazy psychedelic forest called Shriekwood Forest, or the Diva’s castle which we’re doing in this almost kind of midcentury modern, white-molded plastic style.”
He said these are sets that would never be able to build because of limited space and budget. Technology creates giant windows modeled on the observation port of Star Trek’s Enterprise D command deck. They lean into diorama and scenic painting in the tradition of the scenic flats found in the original Broadway run of “Oklahoma,” but use a new technology to project such things as Banshees flying between trees or an alien sun moving across the sky.
“When we transition from the forest to the castle, it can be built in a really fantastical and interesting way,” Peterman said. “We’re using projection mapping to extend the world of the play 100s of feet back behind the wall of the theater rather than saying, ‘OK, we’re going to stop and now you’re not going to watch a live actor, you’re going to watch some cartoons.’
“There’s something incredible about
getting to build these worlds and have the actors actually live in them and respond to them.”
The technology transports actors and audience to a new world and immerses them in the setting. He wants it to be a distinct experience from something like “Dear Evan Hansen,” where the projections insert themselves into the action instead of augmenting the scenery.
Peterman incorporates AI to create the foundation of the massive scenic paintings. He said it allows him to be strategic with his team’s time and communicate clearly what he wants them to create, in particular with Linda Strawberry, who is doing his scenic and projection design. He uses AI art generators to get 80% of the way to what he wants with colors, scale and core images. He can then hand it over to the artists to create according to his vision.
“I really think of it as a sketching tool,” Peterman said. “I don’t think we would have been able to do this show to the level that we’re going to do it if I had to start with a white page for every scene. It just would have been prohibitively expensive. Frankly, my designers prefer it. It lets me communicate in their language. It lets them get
right to work with their own creativity and bringing their vision to what I put out rather than just wasting all our time trying to get what’s in my head onto paper.”
Peterman brings his music industry experience to the show as well. Rather than a traditional pit orchestra, music director Jan Roper will be on keyboard and then they’ll have a second instrumentalist on a smaller keyboard and working an array of drum pads, triggers, samples and loops, giving the show an EDM inflection while staying true to its late ’80s feel of Tears for Fears, a-ha, Erasure and the mid- to late’80s era of New Order and the tail end of new wave. He wants to embrace the electronic music sounds of the time the score was written.
“It’s going to give it a really unique sound,” Peterman said. “It’s very helpful in a small space to have your drums be digital and virtual because we can really
fine tune the envelope so that it’s not in the same frequency as the actor’s voices. We’re coming up with a really interesting, unique, modern, but also extremely retro soundscape that fits the tone of the show.”
Everything, he expects, will gel into an otherworldly musical experience. “Starmites,” Peterman said, is one of those forgotten gems and one of the most fun musicals he’s ever seen. The main character is a teenage girl who learns to own her own power and her voice and ends up saving the universe.
“If you’re looking for something that is dark and depressing and is really going to challenge your world view, probably look elsewhere,” Peterman said. “But if you’re looking for something that celebrates the power of stories, celebrates the power that lives in all of us. This is a hero who gets her power from her own bravery and her own inner strength.”

A Global Education
EF Academy Pasadena celebrates its inaugural year
By Leah Schwartz Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterAgainst the majestic backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains, students at LA’s newest private day and boarding school, EF Academy, have put this academic year in the rearview mirror.
Last September, EF Academy Pasadena joined the ranks of its established sister schools in New York and Oxford, welcoming students and educators from around the globe and locally.
The 16-acre campus, which previously hosted a string of universities, is dotted with stately buildings and offers all the amenities expected of a prestigious boarding school, including newly renovated classroom buildings, new student residences, an indoor gymnasium and an art center.
they need to have a successful life? How can we set kids up to be successful and happy?”
Probing these questions, the school launched its speaker series, which recently welcomed Dr. Laurie Santos, cognitive scientist and professor of psychology at Yale University, who specializes in the science of well-being for teens.
Although the campus is new, EF Academy stems from a long-standing educational empire. Education First began in 1965 by Bertil Hult in the Swedish university town of Lund and soon became known for its immersive language programs. Since then, EF has expanded its educational offerings to include study-abroad programs, degree programs through the Hult International Business School, educational travel and EF Academy boarding high schools.
The campus also features a basketball court, beach volleyball, a swimming pool and a soccer field. Next school year, the current 125 enrollees will double as the facility builds toward its eventual total of 1,000 students.
As an international academy, global learning happens just as much outside the classroom as inside — students at the academy hail from 28 countries and numerous continents.
“There’s an ongoing, constant cultural exchange, with kids learning about parts of the world that they don’t know much about and the perspectives and cultures of people from places unlike where they’re from. Beyond the traditional learning you do in high school, you’re getting that embedded cultural education, too,” said Sally Mingarelli, head of school.
The ninth- to 12th-grade curriculum rests atop the school’s guiding three pillars: global community, learning by doing, and personalized pathways. “We want our classes to expand beyond our classroom walls,” Mingarelli noted. “We are a startup environment. Every year is a new iteration.” Next year, the school plans to purchase a fleet of vans, so students and teachers can embark on field studies outside the classroom multiple times each week.
For Mingarelli, a holistic approach to learning is all about asking the right questions. “How do we set kids up to get all the skills
The boarding school model allows kids to learn independence in the confines of a safe and supportive environment. Their days are structured to ensure academic success while allowing for a full high school experience. After the school day, students are required to participate in one of the school 30-plus clubs, which include film, STEAM, entrepreneurship, adventure, dance and Model United Nations, or a sport: basketball, soccer, volleyball, running, swimming and table tennis, among others.
“We think it’s important that your high school education is well rounded and holistic and that you’re developing skills be on academic skills,” Mingarelli noted. In the evenings, boarders must attend study hours, where they can receive one-on-one assistance from teachers and staff. The school offers exploratory excursions on weekends to help students discover Southern California.
While international students board at the school seven days a week, local students can live there five days a week or study as day students. “For those students who live locally, it’s kind of like experiencing a year abroad, but with tons of different nationalities,” said Bobbie Jo Dobbs, head of admissions.

A Family First, A Team Second
SGV Special Olympics to compete in Summer Games
By Leah Schwartz Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterVita and Ron Russel have been involved in the San Gabriel Valley Special Olympics team since the early ’90s, when their son, Mark, joined the team at just 8 years old. For them, the team functions more like a family than a sports team.
The 25-athlete track and field team is working hard to prepare for the 2023 Summer Games on Saturday, June 10, and Sunday, June 11, at California State University Long Beach.
The summer meet will gather hundreds of athletes from across Southern California to compete in basketball, bocce, flag football, swimming, and track and field. To participate in the Summer Games, athletes must compete in at least two meets prior in the season.
Those attending the games will arrive early Saturday morning, competing during the day and staying in the dorms at night with their coaches, reminiscent of a big slumber party. In the evening, athletes will mingle at the annual dance, “prom” themed this year.
At the team’s final meet before the Summer Games, the 2023 LA County South Spring Games, on May 20, all 25 athletes on the team won at least one medal.
Meanwhile, the team is keeping up with its weekly Saturday practice, honing its skills and relays. Practicing under the Special Olympics name restricts the team to weekly practicing, but many athletes are motivated to train independently.
The team’s head coach, Ron described watching his son Mark, who has cerebral palsy, compete for the first time, “I was a puddle of tears.” Inspired, Ron began coaching the team shortly after. He also coaches high school football and track. Out of the other 11 coaches who help support the team, some have family members on the team, but others do not but are drawn to help nonetheless.
2023
“They go through things on a daily basis that would challenge any of us, and they have to do it every day in their lives. It’s an honor for me to go out there and be able to motivate them to reach their potential and know that I’m a part of that,” Ron added.
Like Mark, most athletes who join the team stay, sometimes for decades. Even after the pandemic, when the team was on hiatus, almost all the athletes returned to the team. Athletes on the team range in age from 13 to 60 and compete in various track and field events like shot put, long jump and races, both nonassisted and assisted.
The athletes compete based on ability, but for Ron, that doesn’t mean taking the path of least resistance. “I’m always trying to push them to the next race. … They impress me and surprise me every day,” he said. “What they do defies what a person with their abilities should be able to do. … See it once, and it changes you.”
Indeed, he’s seen athletes on the team complete extraordinary feats on and off the track. One team member, who struggled to walk 20 yards, worked up to compete in the 800-meter event. “His expectations are high,” Vita piqued. “Because he knows that they could do more to push themselves. They respond well to that.”
Behind the smiling faces of athletes on the team is another team of sorts, dedicated parents and caregivers. “We all are dealing with something as far as our kids are concerned,” Vita explained. Being on the team is a vital source of community, full of mentorship, advice and support. Caring for disabled children can feel isolating, but within the confines of the team, there is a shared understanding.
But ultimately, the team’s punctuating sentiment is joy and resilience. “If you want to come, laugh and just have a great day, come out here with these athletes. You can’t help it — they steal your heart,” Vita said.

NOTICE TO
POTENTIAL BIDDERS:
If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER:
The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy
to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call FOR SALES INFORMATION,
PLEASE CALL (855)
986-9342 or visit this internet web-site www.superiordefault.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2022-2075.
