Iwas 15 years old and on a summer trip to Sharon, North Dakota, where my family hails from. I rarely got to sit alone with my Grandma Aline and just chitchat. It was easy to do since she was pretty much a heat-seeking talker. Her modest dining room was crammed to the gills with china and gewgaws. Looking back, I wish I’d asked her more questions. Grandma Aline launched into a classic reminiscence. “When they started the Rural Route Delivery mail service, I didn’t understand it. Going into town to pick up the mail was good enough for me. Why should they waste gas just to come out to the farm?”
“Wasn’t it convenient, though, while saving you gas?” I asked.
“I liked going into town once a week. I’d have a cup of coffee and a piece of rhubarb pie at the café. I caught up with folks.”
Sharon, North Dakota, is now a ghost town, but during Grandma’s time, the town had a large grain elevator, a teeny movie theater, and a popular pool hall and bar. Woo-hoo! The main street was even paved! In addition to being irked at the Postal Service, Grandma also thought that moving from party telephone lines to single-user lines was unnecessary. I’m guessing she enjoyed eavesdropping on the other people who shared the line. Grandma was squarely in the “what we’ve got is already good enough” category of folks.
It’s a strange transition, but here we go: this brings me to Apple’s latest innovation. I had barely gotten through the door when my husband, who is a decadeslong die-hard Apple guy — his business name is The Tech Daddy — hit me with the latest tech news. He could barely contain his geeky excitement over the introduction of what Apple claimed was one of the most significant breakthroughs in decades: the new Apple Vision Pro “spatial computing” system. (That’s an “Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality headset” to the rest of us.)
“They say it could change how we live, just like the iPhone did.”
“Oooh, kaayyyy,” I say.
“You might want to write a column about it,” he said. And indeed, here we are.
The Apple Vision Pro… it’s hard to know where to start. They look like a large-ish, fancy pair of ski goggles controlled with just your eyes, voice and fingers; no controller is needed. However, wearing them will make you look like you have a giant bug’s head.
I’m thinking, “Isn’t walking around with my computer — er, smartphone — in my hand good enough?” as I echo Grandma Aline’s sentiments. And, aren’t we already exposed to enough screen time without having to wear one on our face?
Experiences can be so immersive with Vision Pro that watching movies will be like you’re in them. However, when a family member walks into the room while you’re “communing” with your Vision Pro, the shading on the “The Fly”-looking goggles will clear up enough for you to see them and for them to see your eyes so they know that you know they are there. Then, presumably, you can continue to ignore them as rigorously as before.
A feature I appreciate is that I can now sort through my thousands of cloud-synced photos and, just with my eyes and voice, sort them into albums… voilá! Nice.
I can hear the ca-ching of the mental cash registers going off in the porn industry. The headset can get people up close and intimate without worrying about actual bodily contact — perfect for our post-COVID world! I’m sure they already have body odor plugins on the drawing board.
Meanwhile, I keep thinking of all the mental power that went into this invention while thinking, “Wow, this really is fiddling while Rome burns.” Although the predictions of global habitability are so dire, the elite can move their lives entirely indoors (or deep in their bunkers) while making out on their facial goggle screens. But really, Apple, how about herding all your nerd power into solving the global climate crisis… or cancer… or thwarting right-wing wacko world domination plans?
The price tag is a way to keep out the hoi polloi. The device starts at $3,499! I heard “only $34.99,” and for a second, I thought, “Wow! A little less than $35!” Yeah, no.
As far as I can tell, when it comes to inventions, whether the telegram, the railroad, the horseless carriage or spray cheese in a can, people fall into at least three basic categories:
1) Can’t wait!
2) Why bother? (the “good enough” folks), and
3) the Doomsday Conspiracy people, including those who think Satan is behind almost all innovation.
And there are people like me who fall into an amalgam of those categories. I can’t wait to try on a pair of these goofy goggles which are totally unnecessary and could possibly cause the end of the world. What can I say? I like to cover all of my bases. My Grandma Aline would think we’re all good enough “as is.”

Through his company Pasadena Walking Tours, Neel Sodha wanted to give locals and visitors greater insight into the stories behind Pasadena’s rich history.
His company offers regular Haunted Pasadena and Explore Pasadena public tours at 6:30 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. Saturdays, respectively.
The Haunted Pasadena tours take participants past castles, alleyways, mortuaries, theaters, underground tunnels, backrooms and shopping malls filled with stories of ghosts and unexplained deaths.
“With that one, they like hearing about the stories of the catacombs of Pasadena, the tales of the Pasadena Playhouse and the murder of the dentist back in the 1930s that is unsolved as of today,” Sodha said.
The Explore Pasadena traces the city’s history, culture and architecture. They travel to spots such as Pasadena City Hall, the Pasadena Robinson Memorial, Mercantile Place and Castle Green.
The tours take participants through the Civil Center, Old Pasadena and Playhouse Village neighborhoods.
Sodha said the haunted tours tend to draw locals and tourists, while the Explore Pasadena historical tours attract more outof-towners.
Sodha said that locals can learn a lot of new information about their city.
“Locals will come with their out-oftown guests because it’s an activity to do,” Sodha said.
“The local will initially feel like they know about Pasadena, but their friend from out of town wants them to join this tour. In the end, the person who is local is the most excited for doing the tour. ‘Wow, I had no idea about some of these things in my own city.’ You think you know your backyard. There’s a lot of things that you do know, but there’s a lot that we will help you to uncover.”
The company also offers private tours focused on New Year’s in Pasadena, Monrovia, Playhouse Village and South Pasadena.
Sodha founded Pasadena Walking Tours
in 2017, as the sister company to LA Walking Tours, which he started in 2009. He expanded to Pasadena because of its vast and diverse history.
“I think there’s a lot to uncover about the city itself. We wanted to create tours specific to the neighborhoods,” Sodha said.
To develop programming for the tour, Sodha did extensive research on Pasadena’s history.
“It takes quite a while to put the information together,” Sodha said.
“We want to make sure everything is structured within two hours and a reasonable walking distance, which is less than two miles. So, you are walking the path and seeing what to talk about, which are the significant milestones, events, historical points along the path and where can you stop and talk. It can take a lot of time to put something together.”
During his research, he learned about the vast alleyways in Pasadena.
“The amount of alleyways in the city was unknown to me before I got in depth with this,” Sodha said.
“That’s something we really highlight on the Explore Pasadena tour. … We walk a lot of the alleyways of the city. It takes you off Colorado, Raymond or off the main streets right into the alleyways. I think that’s the most surprising and fun part of that tour for a lot of people not realizing the amount of alleyways in the city.”
He finds the city fascinating. Pasadena was a dry community leading up to Prohibition, and in the late 1800s, the city was a popular medical resort spot. Celebrities frequently hopped off the train to avoid paparazzi in the early 1900s.
“We are trying to put history all together. Not everything is isolated. There are things that were happening in tandem with the rest of the country, so we can relate our city with other places,” Sodha said.
The tour also discusses notable figures in Pasadena’s history, such as Jackie Robinson’s brother Matthew “Mack” Robinson, who won a silver medal in the 1936 Olympics in the 200 meters in track and field and was only second to Jesse Owens.
“It gives us the ability to highlight these people that most people don’t know anything about. That’s what we do. We try to bring everything to life,” Sodha said.
Sodha has always been a history buff with an interest in what makes different cities and neighborhoods special. For him, it is important to tell the stories behind the historical places and people important in each city.
“I’ve always enjoyed walking, exploring neighborhoods, telling stories about the buildings, the culture, the architecture,” Sodha said.
The Pasadena tours are led by three main tour guides. In the companies’ infancy, Sodha led three to four tours a day, but he has been handling more of the business operations side in the last few years for his two companies.
Sodha said when hiring tour guides, he looks for people who can share history in an engaging way.
“The focus is really how can you creatively tell a story?” Sodha said.
“You can always teach people material or content, and people can research on their own. It’s how you can put together stories.”

For architecture enthusiasts, the Gamble House is a bucket list destination.
The historic home epitomizes 20th century American Arts and Crafts Movement and Craftsmen architecture — found throughout Pasadena — and is painstakingly preserved with all its original furnishings designed by the architects.
“You can’t help but be curious about the Gamble House just in looking at it,” said Alexandra Rasic, James N. Gamble executive director. “One thing that’s so magical about (the Gamble House) is that it appeals to so many different types of people.”
The three-story house and its gardens sit on a grassy knoll overlooking the Arroyo Seco, a 24.9-mile seasonal river and watershed, and is commonly described as America’s Arts and Crafts masterpiece. As the style suggests, the house is adorned with handmade elements and focused on the use of natural materials and craftsmanship and combines Japanese aesthetics and a Californian sensibility. The home’s design reflected the Gamble’s love of nature, with motifs of flowers and trees found throughout the house made from wood, art glass, metal and semiprecious stone.
The home’s interior reflects the attention to detail and craftsmanship that define the movement. Each room features multiple types of wood —maple, oak, Port Orford cedar, teak and mahogany — contrasted and spaced to bring out each’s tones and hues. Inlays in the furniture designed by the Greene brothers are reflected in the tiled fireplace and the interlocking joinery in the staircase was left exposed.
“What’s so great about preservation is that it helps to tell the story of our communities,” Rasic explained. “The fact that the house is still here tells the story of a particular point in time when the Craftsman architecture that is so dominant here in Pasadena was becoming an important part of the landscape.”
The Gamble House was designed in 1908 by brothers Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene of the Pasadena architectural firm Greene and Greene — responsible for many of the area’s iconic Craftsmen homes — as the winter residence for Mary and David Gamble, the son of Procter & Gamble founder James Gamble.
The home remained in the Gamble family until 1966, when it was deeded to the city in
a joint agreement with the University of Southern California School of Architecture.
In 1977, the home was officially recognized as a protected landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the home is owned by the city of Pasadena and operated by the Gamble House Conservancy and is open to the public for events and weekly tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Sundays.
The conservatory sports a robust volunteer program with upward of 100 docents, an archival collaboration with the Huntington Library and a scholars-in-residence program that provides housing to two architecture students in the Gamble House. As a community leader and model of conservancy, The Gamble House continues to evolve.
“(The Gamble House) is not a static timepiece,” Rasic said. “We want people to feel more ownership of the Gamble House,” she said. “We want to be seen as certainly a house of its time, but also as the changes in terms of its programs and what it offers to the public. … We’re a great community resource.”
The Gamble House recently announced its first lecture series since the pandemic, “Preservation in Practice,” a three-part educational program featuring conversations about historic preservation at the Gamble House. One upcoming talk will dive into the recent conservation treatment of the house’s iconic third-floor roof features, including the rafter tails extending beyond the structure, barge boards and beam ends.
“We like to be able to share how we care for the house because we learn things over time,” Rasic said. “We change our practices, just like we all do with our homes. It’s great to be able to showcase that and talk about what we’re doing to take care of the house.”
As a well-known community institution, the Gamble House participates in ArtNight Pasadena, Museums of the Arroyo Day and Museum Store Sunday. To further expand its access after the pandemic, the house added more free and low-cost touring days as well as a free family day.
“We’re excited to look at how we can be more of a community resource. We want people to feel welcome on the campus here,” Rasic said. “A wonderful take-away from the pandemic is that so many outdoor spaces have been activated, and this is a beautiful outdoor space to spend time in.”

When most think of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, spacecrafts and telescopes usually come to mind, not quilts. But that changed in 2022 when 153 JPL community members, including both experienced and firsttime quilters from across the center’s departments, labored for months to create a one-of-a-kind quilt welcoming Dr. Laurie Leshin, the first female JPL director in its then 86-year history.
The quilt is currently on display at the Pasadena Museum of History as part of the “Community Stitches: Quilt Designs & Stories” exhibition, which features upwards of 60 quilts representing over 180 years of quilt-making in America.
The JPL quilt is one of three community spotlight quilts showcased in the exhibit, marking historic occasions. The Pasadena City College 75th anniversary quilt features squares
representing all of the departments on campus and was designed by Bobbie Moon and Suzanne Bravender, who headed a team of 35 quilters drawn from PCC staff and the PCC parent-teacher organization. A reproduction of the Machado appliqué quilt, the oldest known surviving quilt made in California by Juana Machado around 1850, is also on display.
The 144-square JPL quilt encompasses an array of artistic styles and explores JPL’s iconic history and future missions. Some squares whimsically portray aliens, robots, cats in space and Star Trek’s Lt. Uhura. Others mark groundbreaking JPL projects, spanning from 1958 to the distant future, including the Deep Space Network, Voyager 1, Cassini, the Shuttle Program, Mars Exploration Rover twins (Spirit & Opportunity), the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover, the James Webb Space Telescope, the Europa Clipper, the Roman Space Telescope and the Europa Lander.
“The quilt combines intergenerational
stories and mission milestones and opens a window into the dreams of JPLers, square by square,” said Julia France, software systems engineer at JPL and quilt leader.
the ever-growing project.
“We leaned on some of our engineering toolsets to tell people how quilts were made and then also constrained what they could submit so that we could later quilt it all together,” Sly said. “We ran it like it was a flight project.”

At Leshin’s first town hall, she spoke about her vision for JPL, concluding with personal details; she has a dog and enjoys crocheting and knitting. A fellow crafter, France was inspired to make Leshin a welcome gift and posed the idea of a quilt on an internal chat channel.
“Julia and I thought it would be 10 to 15 people. … It ballooned quickly to being a large community effort,” said JPL systems engineer and quilt lead Katie Siegel.
The project quickly grew to include the whole community. Volunteer JPL “Quiltonauts” worked under a makeshift leadership force that included Siegel and France, along with JPL community members Andrew Branch, Bridget Landry, Melora Larson, Jacqueline Sly, Emme Wiederhold, Bridget Landry, Rhiannon Conrado, Tara Nelson and Krys Blackwood.
Another quilt lead, Jackie Sly, a robotics system engineer, wrote a 14-page interface control document, primarily used in the engineering world to provide interface information generated for a project, to help guide
After weekends and nights assembling squares, the JPL team brought the quilt to Quilt ‘n’ Things Fiber Arts in La Crescenta, where it was assembled by owners Lana and Paul Norton.
To present Leshin with their creation, the team put together a mini installation detailing the quilt’s process, including design documents and a timelapse video. When given the quilt, Leshin’s eye immediately caught one particular square that pictured her mother, who inspired Leshin to pursue a scientific career.
“It was surprisingly emotional,” Siegel said. “It was a huge gift to all of us as a community, even to do this as a group. It was super fun and brought many of us together.”
Before the exhibit, the quilt hung in Leshin’s office and often appeared as her zoom background.
“The quilt came at the perfect time for many of us. There was a lot of change and people trying to find community in a time when we weren’t all physically onsite,” Siegel said. “It was a big opportunity to meet many people and grow as a person. ... It was a joyous time to be a group of people trying to come together and make one cool thing for our new director.”

The Pasadena City Council unanimously approved the $1.2 billion operating budget for 2024 on June 6. It marks an almost $3 million increase from 2023.
“This is the culmination of a lot of work on the part of the staff and the part of the city council,” said Mayor Victor Gordo. “I’d like to thank all of my colleagues for the time and dedication that you put into the budgeting process.”
The 2024 budget, broken down, allocates approximately $365 million to services and supplies, $359 million for personnel, $52 million in operating expenses, $57 million in operating transfers out and
$64 million in internal service charges.
“This year’s budget process was very productive. We learned a lot, we heard a lot, and we definitely have some great things to come back to the council to continue working through during the coming months,” Matthew Hawkesworth, director of finance, said during the city council meeting.
The council adjusted the budget on three accounts; the first was to restore two fulltime park safety specialists and their corresponding appropriations of $190,422 into the general fund that had been removed from the proposed budget. Secondly, the council amended the budget to include $150,000 in supplemental funding for weather-activated homeless shelter services. The final adjustment allocated addi-
tional funds to the Pasadena Fire Department for three full-time fire inspectors.
The city council also resolved to transfer around 6.25% of estimated gross revenues, or $13 million from the Light and Power Fund. The council decided upon this transfer with the assumption that money would be made up in 2024 because that fund had a shortfall in 2023. The fiveyear outlook presented at the city council meeting accounted for this shortfall but showed that the budget will balance over the next few years.
“Our outlook for the future is a tightly balanced budget, but it is balanced in the long term, which is exciting. We had hoped this would be the case coming out of COVID. We hope that the economy
continues to be strong and stable,” Hawkesworth said. “The five-year forecast looks pretty good.”
Gordo emphasized the consideration and effort that went into this budget before concluding discussions. He also wanted to touch on the wide number of youth programs included.
“I know all of (the council members) have raised that issue, either with me or the city manager during the budget discussions. As it relates to swim fees and as it relates to participation in the parks program, we are going to take a deeper dive,” Gordo said. “We are going to look at all those fields and come back sometime before fall to see if there’s an opportunity to adjust before some of these fees take effect.”
The Pasadena Police Department will welcome a medley of classic and modern cars to the foot of city hall on Saturday, June 17, for its 21st annual car show. Alongside the automotive collection amassed by officers, community members and car enthusiasts throughout the city and beyond, attendees will have access to food trucks and information tables.
“It started in 2002,” Lt. Monica Cuellar recalled. “It was created by a couple officers that wanted to show off cars that we had, like the old police cars that were back then and would be vintage now. And they said, ‘Why not put all our car cars together, show them off to people and bring the community together?’ … Then they opened the doors for other people to bring their cars to show off, and it just grew and grew bigger from there.”
Though Cuellar described herself as someone who’s “not a big car person,” she said that witnessing the different eras of automotive design fascinated her. She also revels in the community interactions.
“It’s awesome because we get to meet people that you’ve never met. … A couple times I saw Jay Leno there,” Cuellar said. “The owner of the car or somebody that’s representing that car is usually there to give you a history about the car. … The officers that are car fanatics love it because they get
to share their passion with other people.”
The annual car show benefits Pasadena PD’s youth programs, namely the Pasadena Police Activities League (PAL) and Pasadena Police Explorer Post No. 19.
PAL was formed as a youth crime prevention program that pairs after-school and summer education with athletic and recreational activities to build positive connections between children and police officers. Program members can play in California PAL basketball, soccer and karate tournaments; take field trips to museums, theme parks, state beaches, Hearst Castle and the Pasadena Playhouse; and participate in the annual Summer Youth Leadership Conference.
The Pasadena Police Explorer program was created to give young community members aged 14 to 21 the opportunity to work with Pasadena PD officers and employees. Program participants, who are “recruits” before graduating to the title of “police explorer” after 22 weeks, can experience skill competitions, social events and a ride-along with an officer while they work.
Both Pasadena PD programs will be supported by funds raised through the 21st annual car show at city hall.
“It’s a really, really good show; it brings everyone together and it’s fun,” Cuellar said. “There’s food and it’s for a good cause, so it’s a really good experience for everybody.”

With its Mediterranean-like climate and boundless range of habitats — coastal beaches, snowy peaks and arid deserts — Southern California is among the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world and is home to countless wildlife and plant species, some found nowhere else on Earth. But in a region with upwards of 23 million people, wildlife and natural spaces are often discounted, with the need for infrastructure decimating habitats and pivotal wildlife crossings.
Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy’s exhibit “Living in a Wildlife Corridor” at the Boddy House at Descanso Gardens ex-
plores the importance of creating and maintaining wildlife corridors — routes used by wildlife to move between pockets of preserved open spaces — in and around Los Angeles and highlights local conservation efforts, local artists and traditional Tongva knowledge. The exhibit is ongoing through Sunday, Oct. 1.
“Here at Descanso Gardens, and in this region, many of us are living right in the middle of a wildlife corridor,” said Barbara Goto, director of operations at AFC.
“Everybody is living in this wildlife corridor, and these animals are all around us.”
As visitors make their way through the exhibit, they will encounter up-close wildlife photography and painting, prints and drawings of Los Angeles wildlife and the
For the best homes, all signs point
ecological challenges many species face. The gallery includes a tribute to P-22, Griffith Park’s celebrity mountain lion who died last December, illustrating what happens when wildlife corridors are unavailable.
“Los Angeles is one of the most biodiverse urban areas in the world, and its natural beauty is part of why so many people choose to live here,” said John Howell, Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy’s CEO. “We’re honored to be working alongside Descanso Gardens and other critical environmental organizations to give a new and different window into the world of wildlife — not only mammals but also bats, birds, bees, butterflies and reptiles — and the plant life they depend on. It’s our hope
that visitors will gain greater insights into the natural world we live in and be inspired to join the wave of people taking action to protect it.”
Images from remote camera traps — wildlife cameras triggered by motion — show animals traversing wildlife corridors amid human life. Camera traps are essential for conservation, tracking the health of animals and monitoring crossings.
AFC uses data from camera traps to create and maintain habitats and wildlife corridors in and around the San Gabriel and Crescenta Valleys, connecting large, open habitats: the San Gabriel Mountains, the Verdugo Mountains, the San Rafael Hills and Griffith Park, known as the Hahamongna to Tujunga Wildlife Corridor.
Without the protection of these corridors, wildlife risk crossing deadly roads and urbanized communities or isolation, which could result in the loss of genetic diversity and extinction. The conservancy often acquires private property, transforming it into a thriving wildlife habitat and crossing. The conservancy also works with local jurisdictions, as it has with the revitalization of Verdugo Wash, a 9.4-mile tributary of the Los Angeles River.
“(Wildlife) used to have free passage everywhere. Now development has dramatically limited that,” Howell said. “We’re trying to recreate and create passage, but we’re also trying to enhance passage.”
Landscape and native plants are essential for reviving a wildlife corridor. For example, monarch butterflies need milkweed plants — the only vegetation monarch caterpillars eat — to survive. AFC’s Monarch Recovery Project aims to rehabilitate monarch habitats by planting and giving away milkweed. Other local conservation initiatives in the exhibit include the Natural History Museum’s Backyard Bat project. Museum scientists and residents in understudied neighborhoods work together to track and record bat activities as part of the first large-scale study of bat habitats in urban spaces.
Wildlife corridors are used by more than just large mammals like mountain lions and
bears. The exhibit’s “Sky Corridors Room,” in partnership with the Pasadena Audubon Society, a local organization focused on conservation and birding, illustrates the importance of wildlife corridors for birds, insects and butterflies. Native plant nursery Theodore Payne depicts how flora and fauna play a vital role in maintaining habitats and lowering fire risk.
In the exhibit’s “Night Music Room,” Tina Calderon, a culture bearer of the Gabrielino Tongva Tribe, relays the Tongva creation myth, departing deep generational knowledge.
“We believe that indigenous people’s traditional ecological knowledge is essential in land stewardship and how we manage our land after we acquire it,” Goto explained.
The exhibit will coincide with the Wildlife Corridor Education Series, including talks on creating backyard native habitat refuges and wildlife camera trapping.
By the exhibit’s end, visitors will walk away with concrete steps to protect and preserve local wildlife and conservation initiatives to get involved in.
“One of the goals for the exhibit is to empower people to take specific direct action in their yards, neighborhoods and communities to help nature,” Howell said. “We have specific things folks can consider doing to help make a difference individually.”

Grammy Award-winning producer Hit-Boy is a proud former Pasadenan.
Now living in Toluca Lake, Hit-Boy — who has worked with Big Sean, Kanye West, Beyonce and Jay-Z — resided in Pasadena until he was 13, when his family moved to Inland Empire. He attended Longfellow Elementary and Wilson Middle schools.
Born Chauncey Hollis Jr., he will return to Robinson Park on Saturday, June 17, for the city of Pasadena’s 15th annual Juneteenth celebration. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with Hit-Boy performing from 1 to 3 p.m. He will host an additional party with giveaways from 3 to 5 p.m.
“I’m 1,000,000% excited,” he said. “I used to play football at that park when I was a kid. We’re giving back with free food giveaways, T-shirts. I love giving back to the community.”
appealed his sentence for more than two years.
Last February, the court of appeals heard his case and granted his petition for a writ of habeas corpus, allowing him to be brought to court due to unlawful detention. They directed the trial court to strike the great bodily injury enhancement on count one; amend the abstract of judgment, and send a certified copy of the amended abstract of judgment to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The website also reports that the court found the great bodily injury enhancement was excessive because civilian assistance could not have quelled the injuries. So, the enhancement was inapplicable.
“He’s been in and out of jail his whole life,” said Chloe Cheyenne, the founder and CEO of COMMUNITYx, which brings awareness to issues like prison reform, clean water access and women’s rights.
His concert will be a listening session and celebration for his new album, “Surf or Drown Vol. 2,” which releases Friday, June 16. It’s the follow-up to the first volume from March.
“It has more of a progressive sound,” he said about volume two.
“A lot of them were misdemeanor crimes, small crimes. They didn’t involve anyone being harmed or killed. He has a really great son who really loves him. His son has been looking out for him his whole life.
“It’s more rooted in West Coast energy and just really bringing it home to the music I grew up on. It’s a great piece of my story. My dad is on pretty much every song on the album.”
“The most recent time he got out, he’s been trying to keep him busy and focused on his creativity and talent. He wants to see his dad live out the rest of his life outside of prison.”
Hit-Boy and his dad are working on music together and have recorded Hollis Sr.’s music for the first time under Hit-Boy’s label, HS87.
His father, Chauncey Hollis Sr., was released from prison on May 6, after a nine-year incarceration. On July 14, 2014, he was involved in a car crash that resulted in significant injuries to the other vehicle’s occupants.
A few months later, he was arrested on a hit-and-run warrant. He was convicted on a count of hit and run resulting in great bodily injury. Sentenced to 12 years and four months in prison, Hollis Sr. also received a five-year great bodily injury enhancement connected to one count of fleeing the scene of a car crash, according to the COMMUNITYx website freebighit.com. Big Hit’s to-be-announced solo record releases Friday, June 23. The father-and-son duo will perform together in Pasadena.
“We’ve been talking about everything we wanted to do before he came home,” he said. “For it to be manifested and for him to gain his own fanbase so quickly, it’s inspiring.
“He always wrote music but never really recorded until he was released. He’s been in prison for most of his life, since he was 19 and I was 3. He was
there until I was in 11th, 12th grade. We always had a bond. He used to send me letters with some of his raps. I would read his raps and try to understand the language and what he was saying. That really helped me put together his thoughts and things.”
Hit-Boy is driven by his father, his love of music and his family, including his 3-year-old son, Chauncey, “C3.”
“Everything I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid is coming to life at one time,” he said. “I feel like this is what I’ve prepared for — the good, the bad and the ugly.
“The things that looked bad to me were what prepared me. I have the strength and courage to keep going. I provide for my family. I help my dad. I help everyone around me. On top of me just loving music, I can help generational curses and help people to see financial stuff in another light.”
Hit-Boy knows about financial struggles. As a youngster, his mom told him to prepare for possible financial hardship.
“I was like, I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I’m going to have mon -
ey when I grow up,” he said.
“I was 8. I had something inside of me. I knew I was going to be different. I was going to do something great to help my family. I didn’t have anyone who played piano or instruments in my home. I still ended up being a producer.
I fell in love with the production process. It’s so fun. It’s so visual. It’s almost like a video game. Making beats at 14 or 15 replaced playing video games for me.”
“C3” has already shown off his vocal talents, having joined his father in the studio with Big Sean and Nas.
“He’s been a part of some real historic processes,” he said. “I’ve done four albums with Nas and we’re working on a fifth right now. My son has been to most of those sessions.”
Nas told Hit-Boy that he brings a youthfulness to his projects.
“I come from a different era and a different coast,” Hit-Boy explained. “Looking at it on paper, you wouldn’t think a younger guy on the West Coast could produce for a legend like Nas. For people to embrace the music we do together is amazing.”

After giving a $32,000 grant to ArtCenter College of Design, volunteer nonprofit Pasadena Art Alliance has reached a $1 million milestone in support of the Pasadena college. PAA has been financial supporter of ArtCenter for the past 50 years, with $17,000 of its most recent grant going toward exhibitions and $15,000 to fund fine art student scholarships.
“To be an artist these days, it’s really a calling,” said Laura Cooper, ArtCenter professor and chair. “You don’t really do it for money, you do it for love; it’s an expression you have to make. And it’s my sincere belief that it’s incredibly important for our culture, that there are kinds of understandings that only can happen through the arts.
“The students who come to our college are coming to a wonderful program at a wonderful college, but it also comes at a high price, and it’s really important to us that we have the full spectrum of students and whatever means they come from, they’re there for their talent. Scholarship is incredibly important in making that happen.”
Students who have received alliance scholarships throughout the years come from a myriad of backgrounds and identities, including single parents, who have had to balance the workload of an ArtCenter education with raising a child, as well as first-generation American citizens and first-generation college students.
“I want my children to be inspired,” said graduate Elysabeth Bell, who was the first in her family to finish college. “Both my parents were immigrants to this country and wanted to give us a better life. Getting my degree will not only help me, it will help my children continue to pursue the better life that my father risked everything for by escaping communism.”
Bell, who graduated from ArtCenter in spring 2022, teaches painting workshops for ArtCenter’s Integrated Studies Program.
“(These scholarships) can make an enormous impact just in allowing a student to be there or in allowing a student to, let’s say, not take a semester off because they have to work,” Cooper added. “These are options I’ve seen students have to
weigh, and then get a scholarship and just be so relieved. But in being relieved, that also creates that kind of head space where they really get to concentrate just on their work and to feel, and I think this is not a small thing, as though that they’re recognized as artists and that they can really take themselves seriously and move forward in their careers.”
Cooper also noted the alliance’s contributions to ArtCenter’s exhibitions department, spearheaded by vice president of exhibitions and director of ArtCenter galleries Julie Joyce, and curator of exhibitions Christina Valentine.
Recent shows that have been supported by the alliance have included “Purple Mexican,” which features 40 works on paper and several amorphous sculptures by LA artist Victor Estrada that are largely informed by Chicano politics and 1980s punk rock; “Cantos of the Sibylline Sisterhood,” which brings together works by an intergenerational group of contemporary female artists drawing on the realms of science fiction, fantasy, spirituality and mythology; and “Enter Slowly, The Lega-
cy of an Idea,” a series by LA artist Kim Schoenstadt inspired by E-1027, an iconic house by 20th century architect, designer and artist Eileen Gray.
“We’re seeing new audiences at the shows,” Cooper said. “I feel as though our audience is expanding, even though we’ve just gone through this horrible pandemic, and I love seeing that because what’s so important about exhibitions is that it’s not just inward facing, though it helps the students and it helps the curriculum, and we love that, but it’s also about that interaction with the outside world and making sure that people from outside of ArtCenter can know us, know what we do and benefit from the kind of thinking and synergy that’s going on here. And Pasadena Art Alliance is right at the cross section of those things.
“We’ve also formed a relationship with them where our students get to go and work for them and assist in truly meaningful ways where they’re getting an educational value. … What is it like to participate in auctions? Young artists very often will be asked to participate in auctions.
How do they do so in a way that maintains their professionalism and make sure that their work is honored? … I think that was a really good experience.”
The partnership between ArtCenter and the alliance began in 1976. The nonprofit, whose mission is to foster appreciation for contemporary visual art in Southern California, has donated $422,775 to support student scholarships, $514,500 to support the college’s exhibitions program and another $67,366 to a general restricted fund.
ArtCenter president Karen Hofmann recently acknowledged the $1 million giving milestone at a ceremony at the alliance’s annual meeting in Pasadena.
“We are deeply grateful to the Pasadena Art Alliance for this extraordinary history of giving to ArtCenter,” she said. “Supporting our students through scholarships to increase access to an art and design education is a very meaningful way to support the next generation. PAA’s sponsorship of our exhibitions for so many years has helped us reach new audiences and made an impact on the cultural landscape of our region.”
Before Jasmin Shupper came to California to start Greenline Housing, she lived on the South Side of Chicago in a home her grandmother purchased in the 1960s. It was no small feat what her grandmother accomplished as a single Black woman during the Civil Rights era, Shupper said. The impact of that purchase has rippled through her family, ensuring a better life for generations to come.
“It’s widely known that one of the biggest passages of wealth from generation to generation happens through homeownership and happens through real estate,” Shupper said. “That house helped fuel all
the future purchases my parents made of homes. They had such a starting place. Because of that home, I had access to health care, quality education and so many of these things that are tied to place,” Shupper explained.
Shupper is living the legacy that Greenline Housing aims to help families of color in Pasadena achieve: a better future through homeownership. Shupper founded Greenline Housing as a nonprofit organization aimed at providing homeownership grants, financial education and home maintenance assistance to qualified applicants looking to own their first home.
Greenline Housing’s down payment grants help Black families make that first step into ownership. The grants are not
loans; they are monetary gifts that help families of color come up with the down payment for their homes. While it does require the family to have some amount already saved, there is no income cap. According to Shupper, this helps families who have already overcome the odds take their wealth development one step further to buying a home.
Shupper gave the example of one family who recently utilized a down payment grant, Andrew and Eupha Jeanne. For them, homeownership was important because it was not available to their predecessors. Eupha’s grandfather fled Jim Crow oppression in the South during the ’40s and raised nine children in
a three-bedroom house.
“They deeply wanted to own (a home).
They wanted that to be part of their legacy because it wasn’t for their family. They applied for the grant, and now they’ve used it to purchase a home. They can put roots down in the community that they serve as educators,” Shupper said.
Shupper explains that applicants can layer Greenline Housing’s down payment grants with other assistance, be it federal or state. To make homeownership even more attainable, she is developing relationships with banks and credit unions to create special lines of credit for their applicants that would lower interest rates.
In addition to their down payment grants, Greenline Housing offers financial literacy and home maintenance assistance.
“We were able to establish a partnership with a leading financial services company that is helping us offer our financial education and financial literacy program. That’s a huge component of not only making sure our potential applicants are set up to purchase a home but also that they’re set up well to thrive once they’re in their home long term,” Shupper said.
Greenline offers financial literacy education regardless of application status for their down payment grants. At the very least, Shupper said, their financial educa-
tion services are an asset Greenline provides to the community; they are helping families get the tools they need to one day be ready to purchase a home or property.
For those that are already in their homes, Greenline Housing also helps with home maintenance assistance. They work with contractors to fund improvements on homes to help increase property values.
Shupper started Greenline Housing during the pandemic. Because of that, she had to rely on private donations because the IRS was delayed in approving Greenline’s nonprofit status. Now, they can receive institutional gifts and are targeting grant funding. However, they still rely heavily on private donations.
While Greenline Housing provides down
payment grants primarily to families in Pasadena, they also serve clients throughout LA County and occasionally the country. Shupper said one thing about working in the Pasadena/ Altadena area is that the local governments and institutions understand the systemic issues the Black community has faced.
“The cool thing about Pasadena is that, for the most part, they’re aware. They are aware of this history, and they’re aware that Pasadena has some scars as it pertains to race,” Shupper said. “It’s not like we’re trying to convince (them), which is good because that is the first step: raising awareness and making sure people know. Then the next step is, what do we do?”
Shupper said she discovered records of a Black family who tried to move to La Cañada in the 1940s, but the local government worked to prevent them from purchasing a home.
“What might the economic reality of that family look like today if they had been able to purchase?” wondered Shupper.
Shupper said that the legacy of Greenline Housing will be families like Andrew and Eupha Jeanne, who want to purchase homes to give their children a head-start in life. With that asset, they will build a new future for their daughter different from the legacy their family was forced to leave.
