Chicken Little was Right
Regarding the climate crisis, the sky really is falling
By Ellen Snortland Pasadena Weekly Columnist“I brought a proposal to our local council about the actions that a small municipality could take to bring attention to the already-occurring climate crisis,” said a long-standing buddy from my early theater days. She lives on the Hudson, not far from New York City. “Good for you, Gina! Think globally, act locally, right?”
“Right. Except one of the fellas on the council cautioned me about being too personal and emotional in my tone. Do you think that was sexist?”
Ellen SnortlandSuppressing a scream, I said, “Without a doubt. Do you think he would have brought attention to the emotional tone of another man? Oh, heck no.”
“That’s what I thought too, but I was outnumbered,” she said. I said, “We’re too emotional, too non-logical, too, too… fill in the blank. It’s all code for ‘don’t listen to women’: they’re Chicken Little alarmists that can’t be trusted.” Arggh. Stories of women not being listened to abound in all cultures, countries and families, and the consequences of not listening keep getting more dire.
A well-placed lawsuit could make an impact. There was a recent New York Times article about the high rate of fatalities caused by excessive heat in Europe, with the majority of the deaths being women — often older women. The subhead reads: “A group of Swiss women over 64 has filed a lawsuit against Switzerland with Europe’s top human rights court, saying the country has violated their rights by failing to curb emissions.” These women are angry, and I wonder if the lawyers in the Swiss government will minimize their suit by claiming the plaintiffs are “too emotional” about the prospect of their own premature climate disaster-driven demise.
Back to my conversation with Gina. “You must feel the impact of the smoke coming down from the wildfires in Canada,” I said.
“Yep, which is why I thought the council would be more open to listening to a group of concerned citizens. I wrote the proposal, and others were also there.”
“The boldness of your proposal obviously took them aback, so instead, they focused on the tone rather than the content. It’s an old sexist trick,” I said.
And a racist trick, too. The climate crisis is hitting the most vulnerable first: women of all colors and people of color who work on the fringes. If the owners of huge agri-businesses were out in the fields, keeling over from heat exhaustion and dehydration, we’d have different laws in a nano-second. Or, if the Republicans in the Texas Legislature had mothers and grandmothers dying from a lack of air conditioning, there could be a significant shift.
Why is it that issues must become personal before people will take decisive action? Many of us have seen global problems coming down the pike without enduring personal consequences. What allows others to be in denial and in absolute oppositional stances: a lack of basic human empathy? Believing that pro-climate and pro-Mother Nature is “woke” and a liberal conspiracy? It’s mind-boggling. These folks are watching canaries dropping dead in most of this country’s mines while saying it’s the libtards’ bad breath that’s killing the birds.
During “The Sermon on the Mount,” Jesus said that the meek shall inherit the earth. I like to think that means we “meek” — whom I interpret as people outside of traditional power structures — wake up enough to take on the dominators (including dominating women) and not stop until
we’re listened to. The meek have to raise their voices and stand up because while their predecessor, Chicken Little, misinterpreted an acorn falling on her head as the “sky falling,” she was also unknowingly prescient. Foxy Loxy ended up eating her and her parade of fowl that marched to the king to demand that something be done about the falling sky. It’s time to pull a switcheroo on that narrative!
I recently spoke to Cynthia Cannady, a major mover regarding the ongoing climate crisis and a leader of the Pasadena 100, who told me, “A group of Pasadena area women over 60 are organizing to make a statement to Pasadena City Council Room S249 on Monday, Aug. 28 at 4:30 p.m. to demand climate action. We senior women are particularly vulnerable to excessive heat, as was demonstrated by the disproportionate number of senior women among the 60,000 people who died in heat-related situations in Europe in 2022. This hot summer is expected to produce even worse statistics.” She added, “We will be in solidarity with Swiss senior women who filed a lawsuit against the Swiss government for failing to take climate action.”
Pasadena is considering its bold plan of transitioning to carbon-free electric power by 2030, and we want the city’s politicians to stay committed. Pasadena can be a powerful model of local leadership in a global crisis. Save the date and put the event in your calendar. And this is not limited to Pasadena women: if you’re in Southern California and can attend, by all means, do so! Email cccannady@gmail.com if you’re planning on attending.
Gloria Steinem says, “Many women grow radical with age. One day an army of gray-haired women may quietly take over the earth.” From her mouth to Mother Nature’s ears.
Continue being meek, kind, and caring while speaking up loudly and proudly. Together, we are powerful. And we have lived long enough to know when it’s time to assert that power … and when the sky is actually falling.

‘Nonprofit of the Year’
Sierra Madre Playhouse honored with Congressional award
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorRep. Judy Chu has named the Sierra Madre Playhouse as a leading “Nonprofit of the Year” in the San Gabriel Valley. The playhouse was given the honor during the 2023 Congressional Leadership of the Year Awards, which recognizes the leadership and volunteerism in the cities making up California’s 28th Congressional District.
“The selected groups and individuals received this honor because of the remarkable, commendable work they have accomplished in their field,” Chu said. “The honorees are leaders who have stood out because of their drive and commitment to
support our communities, help vulnerable populations and carry us through difficult times. They are heroes that inspire us all.”
Each of the honorees was selected from nominations submitted by members of its community. They included organizations like The Claremont Forum, Foothills Community Scholarship Foundation of La Cañada Flintridge and Friends in Deed, and leaders like Abel Ramirez, Dianne Lewis, Tin Tran, Nicholas Quach and Shirley Virginia Kelley Bellemeur.
Sierra Madre Playhouse vice president and treasurer Eileen Walker called it an honor.
“It really points out the fact that the arts and dramatic arts are really important, and it feels good to be honored in that way,”
Walker said. “Making sure that the role of theater and dramatic arts are continued and that they’re supported in the San Gabriel Valley has always been the mission of the playhouse.”
In its 99th year, the Sierra Madre Playhouse began as a cinema during the silent film era. It has since become a dramatic arts venue whose mission is to uplift, educate and inspire through the performing arts.
Among its recent achievements, the playhouse partnered with the Pasadena Unified School District to provide 800 sixth graders with the opportunity to experience a live performance of Lauren Gunderson’s “Silent Sky,” an acclaimed drama directed by Barbara Schofield that tell the story of 19th century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt.
“One thing that the playhouse has always prided itself on is that it wants to make sure it brings theater and literature to students in the San Gabriel Valley,” Walker said. “I was just thrilled about the play ‘Silent Sky.’ … Leavitt worked as what they called a computer at Harvard in the early 1900s, and her hard work and insights led to many important scientific discoveries. This particular play has a lot of relevance to the San Gabriel Valley because Mount Wilson is intricately involved in many of the aspects of Henrietta Leavitt’s work.
“We wanted to let the children experience and learn more about that so that, as they’re going about their day, they can be more
aware of the historic nature of things that have happened here in San Gabriel Valley.”
The Sierra Madre Playhouse was nominated for “Nonprofit of the Year” by board of directors member Paul Scranton, who said he did so because of its involvement with PUSD.
“It turns out that the playhouse has agreements with 12 school districts, not just PUSD,” Scranton said. “Since 2014, when the playhouse got involved with theater for young audiences, they’ve brought in 10,000 students for special performances. … I’m really proud of that.”
Scranton said he’s also proud of the Sierra Madre Playhouse’s ability to persevere through the pandemic, when the theater temporarily closed its doors, and re-emerged with an ambitious performance calendar.
“COVID wiped out all kinds of small theaters,” he said. “Sierra Madre, it’s just a little village; there’s only 11,000 people in the whole city. For us to have this jewel of a theater that has the reputation for Broadway quality on a shoestring, it’s really amazing and it keeps me wanting to ensure its survival.”
Walker said she feels immense gratitude to the Sierra Madre community for supporting the playhouse during its closure and after its reopening.
“That was a very scary time, but immediately the community stepped up and re-
ally increased their support in many different ways,” she said. “That was incredibly meaningful. We had a campaign in 2020 called Light the Lights … which literally was keeping the lights on. We managed to make it through and were very, very encouraged by that support.”
From closing during the pandemic to being named “Nonprofit of the Year,” Walker and Scranton expressed hope for the playhouse’s future. On Friday, Sept. 8, the theater will host an opening night performance of “The Right is Ours,” written and directed by Lloyd J. Schwartz. Chu will attend as a guest of honor.
“In February, we’re celebrating 100 years as a theater,” Scranton said. “You know, 100 years ago there were hardly any paved roads in Sierra Madre. My house wasn’t built until 1929. It’s just really come a long way and it’s an exciting time, even though it’s full of crises. … I’m just so glad that Judy Chu has been so supportive and that she believes in the playhouse, too.”

A Mother to All
‘Elsie’ Benton, cofounder of the Walter Hoving Home, dies at 89
By Leah Schwartz Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterFamily or not, most knew Margaret “Elsie” Benton as “Mom B.” The community stalwart and co-founder of the Pasadena Walter Hoving Home, a halfway home for women struggling with addiction, died July 7. She was 89.
Benton was born on May 15, 1934, in Seattle, to Edwin, a mailman, and Margaret Whaley.
“Her childhood was not easy, but she would say that God used all of her trials to help others,” said Benton’s daughter, Connie Adams.
Benton devoted her life to helping society’s most vulnerable, founding the first Hoving Home in Garrison, New York,
along with her husband, John Benton, in June 1967. What began as a small enterprise eventually expanded to four more locations in California, Nevada, North Carolina and New Jersey.
For nearly 50 years, the Bentons, both Assemblies of God ministers, offered refuge for women on the streets of New York City and Los Angeles from prostitution and substance abuse. The couple were affectionately referred to as “Dad B.” and “Mom B.” by those they cared for and shared 65 years of marriage until John’s passing in 2017.
“Mom B was an extraordinary person who radiated warmth, kindness, and boundless love,” said Beth Greco, CEO and president of the Hoving Home. “She made all of our Hoving Homes feel like ‘home’ with her infectious laughter and genuine smile, which could brighten even the darkest of days. She had an incredible ability to make those around her feel seen, valued and cherished.”

Reflecting on a poignant memory, Greco shared, “I recall a night on the streets during my time in the program when Mom B embraced a lady, urging her to join us at the Hoving Home. When the lady hesitated, Mom B slipped off her shoes, saying, ‘You’ll need these when you’re ready.
We’ll be here for you.’”
Before opening the first Hoving Home in Garrison, the Bentons worked as pastors in Washington State, directors for Youth for Christ and missionaries in Japan. In 1965, David Wilkerson — founder of Times Square Church, best known for his book “The Cross and the Switchblade” — urged the couple to join his Teen Challenge ministry in Brooklyn. The couple moved with their three children to Farmingdale, New York, where John began traveling with Wilkerson as the organization’s associate director.
Soon after, Wilkerson appointed John as the director of the Women’s Home in New York City, where the couple spent countless nights walking the streets, searching for women requiring their help. Spurred on by their efforts, the couple began looking for a place outside the city to establish their own recovery home.
In a fortuitous twist of fate, they were introduced to Walter Hoving, the former longtime chairman of Tiffany & Co., and his wife, Pauline, at a dinner party in March 1967. Hoving helped secure the $175,000 needed to purchase a 22.5-acre property on Snake Hill Road in Garrison, New York,
the site of the first Hoving Home.
In 1984, the Bentons expanded their ministry, opening a home in the former Mira Monte Hotel just doors down from the famed Pasadena Playhouse. The hotel, built in the 1920s, was a well-known haunt for the elite but fell into disrepair. When the Bentons came across the property, the 17,7930-square-foot former hotel was inhabited by squatters. Groups and individuals from the area began “adopting” rooms and refurbishing them, creating the Hoving Home that exists today. The couple made Pasadena home but kept a residence in Garrison until 2016, visiting several times a month for years.
In 2006 they added a third home in Las Vegas and in 2017, a fourth in Oxford, New Jersey.
Since its inception, the homes, led by the Bentons, have helped more than 23,000 women break the cycle of addiction. Each woman who comes to a Hoving Home is allowed to stay for up to a year.
Benton was a maternal fixture in the Pasadena Hoving Home, where she served as the director. “My mother would often see a woman come through the front door, walk up to her, give her a hug and say, ‘I’m Mom B., welcome to our home.’ So often, tears and deep sobs would ensue. It didn’t matter what the person looked like. They were all her daughters,” Adams said. “She had an amazing capacity to love like no one else I have ever seen; it never wavered. Her ability to see the God-given potential in others was given to all. She was also very generous; if there were a way to give to someone in need, she’d give.”
Adams recounted that her mother had a song for every occasion and an incredibly musical ear, which extended to her love of languages. Upon meeting someone from another culture, Benton often asked them to teach her phrases in their language, furthering her connection to the people she encountered, whose names she never forgot, added Adams.
Benton is survived by her children, Marji Smith, Connie Adams and Jim Benton, as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family and friends celebrated her life and legacy on Aug. 12 at the Harvest Rock Church in Pasadena.

World of Racing provides premier sim racing
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorCar racing is an expensive sport. Understanding that, race fan Donovan Janus wanted to give everyone a more affordable way to experience the rush of real racing.
“With the advance of tech sim racing, there is a new form of motorsports,” said Janus, who hails from The Netherlands.
He opened World of Racing, LA’s “premier sim racing center,” in Pasadena in May.
“We have 13 high-end, state-of-the-art car simulators,” he said. “You really experience what it’s like to be a race car driver. This is true car simulation. It’s a fun way to experience the different cars and the different tracks.
“This is a very affordable way for people to get into racing. And unlike go-karts, drivers can experience a wide variety of tracks and cars. With each simulator being the same in terms of performance, the winner is based on driving skill — not who got lucky with the best kart.”
All the simulators at World of Racing are equipped with motion, meaning the driver will really feel the car’s movement. Even small bumps on the track can be felt.
“It does a great job of feeling like you are
right there on track. It’s an experience like no other,” Janus said.
The Surround Sound headsets add to the experience, making it sound as if the engine is next to you. The headsets also have an AI Crew Chief, who keeps participants up to date on the progress of other drivers, as well as tire temperatures and other important information.
“We can hook up all the different simulators together so you can race against each other,” he said. “Headsets allow people to talk to each other, which adds another dimension to it. Especially as people bump into each other and actually feel it, the trash talking can get intense!”
At World of Racing, the race experience rookie package is $39, qualifying plus one race. Race experience pro is $59 and that includes practice, qualifying plus two races.
World of Racing also offers race nights from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays for $125 per driver. All 13 simulators will race against each other on three different tracks, and a champion will be crowned at the end of the night.
For those who want to take their skills to the next level, World of Racing offers a monthly Race Academy. This where guests can learn more about high-performance driving skills that help on the simulator but also in real life on track.
Since opening, World of Racing has hosted a wide range of drivers — from hardcore professional racers training for their next race to three generations of a family to couples on dates.
“This is exactly why we created World of Racing — for everyone to experience great racing together in a very accessible way,” Janus said.
For kids to participate, they must be 52 inches tall and 12 years old, unless they’ve had go-kart experience.
To schedule a race experience or join Race Night, visit WorldofRacing.com. Walk-ins are welcome, though reservations are recommended on the weekend.
Compassionate Care
Taproot acupuncture & herbs offers holistic fertility treatments
By Alison Stanton Pasadena Weekly Contributing WriterAs someone who knows firsthand how difficult it is to have fertility issues and how painful it is to lose a pregnancy, Dr. Sarah Bentolila is devoted to helping as many men and women as possible to achieve their dreams of becoming parents.
These experiences inspired Dr. Bentolila, a doctor of acupuncture and integrative medicine, to open Taproot acupuncture & herbs, which offers a holistic approach to fertility using a combination of Chinese medicine, functional medicine and nutrition.
The clinic, which held its grand opening on the same day California went on lockdown at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, sees mostly men and women who have fertility issues, and women who are having other hormonal health issues.
“We cover everything from the first periods to hormone concerns, infertility, IVF, pregnancy ailments, postpartum care and perimenopause,” Dr. Bentolila said.
“All of our practitioners are also trained generalists, and we also treat any type of pain, stress, digestive issues, anxiety and so on,” she said.
Dr. Bentolila’s interest in holistic approaches to health began when she began suffering from anxiety attacks, insomnia and body image issues in her early twenties.
To find relief, she began learning about yoga and Chinese medicine.
Dr. Bentolila was so pleased with the way these practices helped her, she relocated from Paris to Nanjing, China, where she enrolled in a five-year program at Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Dr. Bentolila finished her residency at Jiangsu Provincial Hospital, where she treated thousands of patients, and she completed her education in Los Angeles with a doctorate degree in acupuncture and integrative medicine, with a focus on women’s health and fertility.
As Dr. Bentolila notes, for 2,000 years, acupuncture has helped women feel more at ease with all stages of their menstrual cycle health.
“Often, Western medicine has few solutions to offer beyond the pill and surgery,” she said.
“Our approach, which combines Chinese medicine and nutrition, is more gentle, yet very powerful. Usually within three to six months of treatment, most my patients report having great success, be it the best and least painful periods of their life, or no more hot flashes.”
As Dr. Bentolila noted, scientific studies have shown acupuncture can increase sperm count and improve sperm quality, resolve anovulation in women suffering from PCOS, and dramatically increase the chances of success of IVF.
In her practice, Dr. Bentolila definitely
sees these scientific results firsthand.
“When it comes to fertility and pregnancy, I have had the honor to have helped hundreds of couples conceive their baby, either naturally through regulating ovulation and egg quality or sperm quality for the male partner, or also for couples going through IUI and IVF,” she said.
While Taproot acupuncture & herbs focuses on Chinese medicine and nutrition, Dr. Bentolila said she and the rest of the practitioners on staff are also knowledgeable about Western medicine.
“This makes us a truly integrative practice,” she said.
“Also, it is in our core values to reject any medical gaslighting. Too often, patients came to us after bouncing around doctors for years without being taken seriously, being dismissed or told they just need their uterus taken out. A lot of them cry simply because we take the time to sit down and listen, truly listen to them. We really, deeply care about our patients.”
As someone who went through fertility issues, Dr. Bentolila said she is very open when it comes to sharing her story of infertility, pregnancy loss and IVF journey.
“It gives me a very personal understanding of what my patients are going through,” she said.
“Many women also come to me after having lost a pregnancy. Acupuncture helps the body recover from the physical and emotional trauma, which is too often taboo and unspoken about. Afterward, we slowly rebuild resources for the body to be able to become and stay pregnant.”
At her practice, Dr. Bentolila estimates that 90% of her patients find some form of relief from their health issues.
“Most people enjoy having a safe space to talk and be heard, where stress is relieved, if nothing else,” she said.
“But usually, the body gets regulated in some way that is always beneficial. I can say we usually have one or two new pregnancies and babies a week at our clinic. There is never a promise, but there is always a benefit.”
Seeing the ultrasound photos when her patients become pregnant, or getting to meet the babies in person when their parents bring them into the clinic is always a joyful moment for Dr. Bentolila.
“I feel like I have hundreds of babies,” she said.

Alan Karbelnig details modern-depth psychology in book
By Summer Aguirre Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterAlan Karbelnig aims to give others a glimpse into the field of psychotherapy with his new book, “Lover, Exorcist, Critic: Understanding Depth Psychology.”
Set to hit shelves on Tuesday, Sept. 12, after a decade of efforts, “Lover, Exorcist, Critic” details Karbelnig’s work as a psychologist and psychoanalyst.
Karbelnig, who has been in private practice in Pasadena since 1988, currently treats adult and adolescents using psychodynamic psychotherapy. Also known as depth therapy or psychoanalytic therapy, the methodology focuses on the unconscious processes that manifest in an individual’s behavior.
While delving into psychoanalysis’ history, cultural context and evolution over the years, “Lover, Exorcist, Critic” gives members of the general public interested in psychoanalytic approaches a visceral understanding and accurate depiction of modern-day depth psychotherapy.
“I want people to know — if they want to know — what it feels like to facilitate these psychoanalytic processes and to learn what someone’s life is really like,” said Karbelnig, who has PhDs in counseling psychology from the University of Southern California and psychoanalysis from the New Center for Psychoanalysis in LA.
“Imagine you become depressed three years from now,” he said, adding then, “You see a cognitive behaviorist four times and, soon, you get tired of learning about breathing exercises and how to write down your automatic, negative thoughts. You then decide to find a psychodynamic psychotherapist who will invite you to take a deeper look at your life. This book will give you the best portrayal of what it’s like to be in that type of psychotherapy.”
According to Karbelnig, the title “Lover, Exorcist, Critic,” offers social role analogies he created to explain the facets of a career as a psychotherapist.
The “lover” references the necessity for psychotherapists to carefully listen, observe their patients, respect them, and cre-
ate a warm, accepting environment. The “exorcist” illustrates the idealizations and devaluations that psychotherapists can receive from patients. Karbelnig said this requires the professional to be nonreactive and to “take it in my mind-body, digest it, and when the timing is right, explain it to (the patient).”
Finally, as a “critic,” psychotherapists “critique a novel” in that they, together with their patients, analyze, confront and educate the patient about their patterns.
Karbelnig illustrates this analogical method and the processes of psychotherapy through dramatic clinical examples.
“There’s a Latino man who grew up in East Los Angeles, a Greek woman who was severely sexually abused as a child and the third person is an orthopedic surgeon who, as noted in the book, has been in and out of my practice for 35 years and suffers from a lot of anxiety,” he said.
Karbelnig emphasized that the cases he presents in his book are fictionalized, though they are based on a combination of stories he has heard over the years.
“I used stories I’ve heard from friends, from psychologists I’ve supervised, and
Alan Karbelnig, PhD626-441-7778, alankarbelnig.com
from my own patients, using bits and pieces to make up whole characters in the book. I was extremely careful to protect privacy and confidentiality,” he said. “However, because of such boundaries, it’s hard to find books about analytic therapy that tell you actual stories of people’s lives. My book does that.”
While the clinical accounts are fictitious, the book also takes a “very personal, human look” at how depth psychotherapists work. In his book, Karbelnig illustrates his failures alongside his successes.
“If you meet with a good depth therapist, you’re going to get help with whatever troubles you, and you’ll also learn a lot about yourself, who you are as an individual person. And it’s hard to find that,” Karbelnig said. “If you pursue spiritual counseling, well, there’s sort of a curriculum there. Nothing wrong with that, but it has a slant. If you go to a cognitive behavioral therapist, also nothing wrong with that, but it’s focused on symptom reduction. You know, let’s get you over your depres-
sion quickly.
“You go to someone who works like me, in a psychodynamic way, — yes, of course, she or he wants you to get you over your depression — but there’s kind of a secondary agenda of learning who you are as an authentic person. People often get socialized to be someone else, to follow in their parents’ footsteps or mirror their successful aunt. Depth therapy helps people to discover their real selves.”
Ahead of the release of “Lover, Exorcist, Critic,” Karbelnig will be hosting a book signing from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Grandview Palace in Pasadena.
The event is free to attend, and guests will be able to enjoy appetizers and beverages provided by Greenbar Distillery, as well as a raffle. Karbelnig will speak at 5 p.m.
All proceeds from book sales will benefit Rose City Center, a nonprofit psychoanalytic clinic in Pasadena serving the economically disadvantaged throughout California.

NOOR offers immersive reception experience
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorThe NOOR in Paris Bridal and Wedding Show isn’t the typical event that merely hosts vendors.
On Sunday, Aug. 27, guests will savor hors d’oeuvres, sample inventive desserts and imbibe handcrafted cocktails prepared by NOOR’s culinary team.
Entertainment includes interactive photo and video experiences and live DJ sets. The event is open to the public and is for anyone planning an event or who simply enjoys great food, drinks and entertainment. Attendees can also interact with professional vendors and NOOR’s sales and event management team.
“It’s part wedding show, part open house,” said Robert Shahnazarian Jr. with NOOR.
“We’ve been open now for 13 years. The first year we were open, we attended those big wedding shows, and we realized you can’t replicate your venue inside of someone else’s venue. The guests don’t get a sense of anything. There are 15 DJs, 20 bakeries, 20 whatever and you don’t get to experience it. It’s all brochures.
“Ours is a three-hour experiential event. It’s like going to somebody’s wedding, really.”
Pasadena event space NOOR has won multiple accolades and awards. Since 2010, NOOR has produced thousands of
events, including weddings, fundraiser galas, birthdays and other life celebrations.
“We bring our clients’ dreams and visions to life in our beautiful event spaces,” he said.
At the open house, vendors will include DJs, photography, videography, floral, hair and makeup, candles, photo booth, cigar roller, chocolate fountain, officiants, liquid nitrogen ice cream station, crepe station, bakeries and custom balloons.
The photo and video experiences will be curated by the event planning company Eighteen Place Card.
It’s charging $10 admission for the first time — but it’s for a good cause. NOOR’s management team will donate all proceeds to the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House.
“We don’t charge the vendors to participate, and we generally don’t charge people to attend it,” Shahnazarian said.
“But we were getting about 1,200 to 1,400 RSVPs and 30% of the people would show up. They have no skin in the game for it. We want to convey to the public that it’s not about $10. It’s all going to the charity.”
Shahnazarian said they generally “sell out” the reservations and it makes sense to him.
“NOOR’s annual wedding show and open house is an excellent opportunity to be inspired and revel in a culinary and immersive experience,” he said.

Cole Gallagher, all-star band explore Springsteen
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorCole Gallagher is in an enviable spot for most fledgling singer-songwriters.
He was granted permission to record an obscure Bruce Springsteen song, “Sugarland,” which was reportedly considered for the 1984 album “Born in the USA.” It was only performed twice by Springsteen and the E Street Band.
Gallagher’s rendition of “Sugarland” appears on his new EP, “The Confluence.”
“I’m just completely ecstatic about everything that’s been going on,” said Gallagher, a 21-year-old who graduated from South Pasadena High School.
“Sometimes it’s hard to wrap my head around everything that’s happening.”
The six-song “The Confluence” sees Gallagher’s growling vocals over a bed of Southern rock, Americana and blues/roots.
The first single, “Lines in the Sky,” was dubbed a Song You Need to Know by Rolling Stone. Another track, “Chatting Through Steel,” is a duet with Los Lobos singer David Hidalgo, and garnered 200,000 views on YouTube.
“The Confluence” was produced by seven-time Grammy winner Vance Powell (Chris Stapleton, Phish, Jack White). His band included Sadler Vaden, Jimbo Hart and Chad Gamble of the 400 Unit, Jason Isbell’s band.
“I was very intimidated,” Gallagher said. “Vance and the 400 Unit and everybody else are so proficient at their craft. There definitely was a learning curve. I feel I got the swing of things, though.”
Hart and Gallagher hit it off immediately, as he’s open minded and understood the singer-songwriter’s position of being a solo artist and coming into his own.
“He walked the same path with Jason before,” he said. “It was a different friendship than I had ever had before. Jimbo understood where I was and where I was coming from. When I got to the studio with him, things felt great. He made me feel at ease and at home.”
Hometown hero
Gallagher was raised in Los Angeles County, where he was schooled on music thanks to his father’s extensive CD collection.
“At first, music was a social outlet for me,” Gallagher said. “I’d run around with my brothers and talk about forming a band. We even came up with band names, but neither of them actually picked up instruments. Once I started playing guitar, though, it immediately started helping me emotionally.”
In high school, he wrote songs that just emerged from within.
“I would write stuff and I’d have no idea where it came from,” Gallagher said. “That’s what fascinated me, writing something and trying to figure out its meaning. Sometimes that answer comes years later, if at all.”
He first played with a band at the South Pasadena Music Center & Conservatory. Tiring of playing only covers, he went solo and wrote his own material.
He impressed club owner Ed Minassian, who gave him a shot at performing at his venue, The Mixx.
“That was a really important moment for me,” Gallagher says. “At first, nobody wanted to hear what I was doing, but before long people really started paying attention. Performing live really sold me on the idea of being a musician. I saw how my songs could affect people and even help them.”
After three years at The Mixx, he traveled to Nashville, where he played at Tootsie’s Lounge and Kid Rock’s honkytonk and steakhouse. Thanks to those experiences, he was asked to play at a NAMM after jam.
“From there, things began to take shape,” he said.
Through a family friend, Marc Levine, Gallagher met Chris Sikora, lead engineer at ReAmp Studios (now Voyager Studios) in Tustin, California, who offered him a chance to record an album. Sikora then connected Gallagher to Nashville keyboard ace Jon Eldridge, who introduced
the singer to Hart and Vaden, bassist and guitarist, respectively, for the 400 Unit.
Once the album was finished, assistant engineer Mike Fahey asked Powell to mix the tracks. The veteran record maker was so impressed that he asked if he could produce his music.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Gallagher said. “If it weren’t for Chris Sikora making the album with me, I wouldn’t have gotten the chance to work with the guys in the 400 Unit and Vance Powell.”
Other players on “The Confluence” include guitarist Barry Billings and drummer Tucker Flemings, and a horn section — Leif Shires, Josh Scalf, Tyler Summers and Simon Yeh. Tera Lynn Fister and Ki-
erra Bronson provided background vocals. Gallagher chalked up part of his success to his manager, Marc Dottore, whom he called “awesome.” Dottore has 30-plus years’ experience, working for the likes of George Strait, Eddie Rabbitt, The Gatlin Brothers, and Kathy Mattea.
“He’s helped me turn a page in my career in big ways for sure,” Gallagher said. “He’s a veteran manager. He knows the ins and outs of the business. I think, so far, the best piece of advice he’s given me is there’s no such thing as a show business emergency.
“I’ve looked up to him for a long time. I can’t tell you how thankful I am for the time he’s given me. It’s been a real blessing.”

An Aging Ache
Real-life couple revive their roles 17 years later
By Bridgette M. Redman Pasadena Weekly Contributing WriterWhen Susan Priver isn’t on set or stage, she’s at The Yoga House in Pasadena, a studio where she has taught for 26 years.
She’s been there even longer than she’s been with her partner Henry Olek, with whom she is reviving a work on the westside that the two of them did 17 years ago.
Back then, she and Olek were just two years into their partnership when they played the role of an old married couple in Harold Pinter’s “A Slight Ache.”
Now the longstanding couple is returning to “A Slight Ache” in a visiting production at the Odyssey Theatre that runs from Saturday, Aug. 26, through Sunday, Oct. 1. The play is produced by Dance On Productions in association with Linda Toliver and Gary Guidinger.
Shelly Kurtz also reprises his role as the matchseller, a silent, haunting figure who hovers outside their garden gate.
Described as a “tragicomedy of manners,” “A Slight Ache” features the married couple breakfasting in their garden, their meal unsettled by a wasp who keeps circling them and Edward feeling an ache in his eyes.
Jack Heller, who recently directed Priver in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” helms this 72-minute show.
While Priver lives in Hollywood, she makes the drive to Pasadena five days a week to teach.
“I’m very known in a small section of Pasadena just because of my teaching,” Priver said.
She is one of The Yoga House’s original teachers and has studied with Erich Schiffmann, Max Strom, Shiva Rea and Ana Forrest.
Priver said she and Olek were looking for something to do together to mark his return to the stage after a near-nine-year absence. Both enjoyed doing this show the first time around and wanted to return to it.
“He finished writing a book not too long ago and he felt like getting back in the arena,” Priver said. “This rang true for him, and we wanted to work together so we decided to do it again.”
This time their approach has been different, and they’ve revisited the couple with new life experiences to inform their acting.
“It’s an interesting experience doing it again after being a long-term couple and being older,” Priver said.
“It is written for an older couple anyway. It wouldn’t have been a young couple.”
She said she also sees many more lev-
to her more and trust her judgment. After all, she’s going to take care of things and solve the problem that bothers him.
“I sort of take over,” Priver said. “Pinter writes that in a lot of his plays. If there are women in them, they end up taking over.”
She said Edward struggles with aging and his inability to do the things he used to do when he was younger. It’s something that leads him to fall apart. Meanwhile, the matchseller becomes a mirror to both of them. For Edward, the iterant interloper reflects what he cannot do and for Flora, the matchseller reflects how she can become strong.
“The matchseller is really interesting,” Priver said. “It’s a silent character, but it’s a very important character and Shelly did a great shop then and he’ll do a great job now.”
She also praises Heller’s direction and the way he has helped all of them find new aspects to their characters.
The play is set in the ’60s as it was originally written and some things, she said, don’t age the best. For the most part, the play is timeless because it deals with the human psyche and the fragility of the human spirit.
“It never goes out of fashion because it’s truly about human beings,” Priver said. “It deals with how people are able to
express what they really need to say without being melodramatic. There’s no melodrama in Pinter. He’s a very deep writer. Within it, there’s humor because people are funny.”
The play explores deeply how people deal with loneliness, with aging, and with not being able to communicate well with your partner anymore.
Conceived for radio, “A Slight Ache” works with a sparse set, something that will be apparent in this production. The costumes are pulled from the upper middle-class closets of the early ’60s, though the matchseller will be dressed in many layers of smelly rags.
The set, meanwhile, will take on a modern, Dali-inspired look that speaks to the absurdist nature of Pinter’s work.
Priver noted that people are anxious for community and the feeling of communal joy that it brings, especially in these days following the pandemic.
It’s why people go to the theater, to concerts and to church. It’s what she hopes people will find when they come out to the Odyssey Theater.
“There’s a communal spirit to theater,” Priver said. “It’s the community and it’s the entertainment. You feel the energy of the performers and the performers feel the energy of the audience. You don’t get that feeling on film.”

BUSINESS
Half-Century Tradition
Sofa U Love is a trusted name in custom furniture since 1971
By Alison Stanton Pasadena Weekly Contributing WriterIn 1971, Varougan “Johnny” Karapetian opened Sofa U Love with one key mission in mind: to offer his valued customers exceptionally high-quality and attractive custom-made furniture.
Over five decades later, the family-owned business is continuing to meet this goal, creating beautiful custom-tailored furniture for customers throughout California and the rest of the country.
Johnny’s son, Vincent, got his start with the family business when he was 19.
“I used to deliver furniture and sweep floors, and I also worked in the factory and have experience cutting fabric,” Vincent said.
They have also created custom furniture for “The Tonight Show,” “The Today Show,” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “American Idol” and “The Voice.”
As demand for their custom-made furniture grew, Vincent said his dad decided to open more Sofa U Love locations.
“My dad currently runs the stores in Hollywood and Newport Beach, and my brother, Vic, owns the stores in San Francisco, Santa Monica and Woodland Hills,” Vincent said.
From sofas and loveseats to sectionals, ottomans, chaises and more, Sofa U Love can create virtually any size and style of furniture homeowners and interior designers desire, upholstered with a choice of over 1,000 fabrics.
He now owns Sofa U Love locations in Pasadena, Santa Barbara, Thousand Oaks and Palm Desert
Vincent said his father got his start making furniture for movie studios in Hollywood.
“He began making furniture for Paramount, Warner Bros., Universal and others,” Vincent said.
“Just like you can tailor a suit for someone, we tailor furniture to our customers,” Vincent said.
Unlike other furniture stores that import their products, Vincent said Sofa U Love manufactures everything at its own factory in Los Angeles.
“Also, it is very important to me that all of my customers are happy first. I strive for all of my stores to get five-star reviews
on Yelp,” Vincent said.
“When a customer walks in, we try to get right to what they want.”
One of the interesting things about having so many locations throughout California, Vincent said, is realizing how each city has its own style.
For instance, in Santa Barbara, customers are often looking for beach-friendly furniture that is easy to clean and maintain, like slip covers and white denim sectionals.
“In Palm Desert, customers tend to want mid-century modern,” Vincent said.
Sofa U Love’s commitment to their customers’ happiness is reflected in the large amount of repeat business.
“I was once in Santa Barbara at a hotel, and another guest heard my name and came up to me and said, ‘I bought furniture from your father 40 years ago,’” Vincent said.
“It really moved me — it was so amazing and touching.”
The employees who work for Sofa U Love are also treated as extended members of the family, Vincent said.
“Another thing that’s special about us is that our workers are with us for life. It is very rare that one of our workers will leave us, and a lot of them have been here since I started when I was 19.”
Vincent said it’s been an honor to work for his father’s company and carry on the outstanding traditions that Johnny started over 50 years ago.
“I love meeting customers, and I love meeting new people and working on projects. I also love the family atmosphere here. It’s definitely an adventure,” Vincent said.
“Whenever we sell something, I still get such a rush, like I feel we are doing something good.”

Welcome Back to Campus
Pasadena Unified celebrates the first day of school
By Pasadena Unified School DistrictThe Pasadena Unified School District welcomed nearly 14,000 TK to 12thgrade students back to campus on Aug. 14 for the 2023-2024 school year.
“As a former classroom teacher and career educator, I am always energized by the first day back to school,” said Elizabeth Blanco, Ed.D., interim superintendent.
“Seeing smiles on students’ faces, touring some of our freshly painted classrooms and schools, and coming together as a community is a rewarding way to start the year.”
This year, the district is putting into action its new five-year Strategic Plan that intentionally elevates the voices of students, teachers and other employees, leaders, and labor and community partners. The most
immediate work ahead is laid out in Blanco’s 100-day plan to learn, listen, communicate and lead the transformation of PUSD.
PUSD serves TK-12 students at 24 schools, in addition to preschool programs, five children’s centers, and an adult education program.
This year, PUSD launches new magnet programs at three schools:
● Environmental science and Spanish World Language programs at Washington Elementary STEM Magnet
● A new Cross-Cultural Learning Magnet program at Longfellow Elementary to supplement the school’s Spanish Dual Language Immersion program
● An Arts Conservatory Magnet enhances the visual, performing arts, and French pro-

grams at Eliot Arts Magnet Academy, which serves middle school students
PUSD now has seven magnet schools for students in elementary, middle and high schools.
Reflecting its commitment to universal early education, PUSD has added four new transitional kindergarten (TK) sites. To bridge the gap between preschool and kindergarten, TK is now offered at 15 locations throughout the district.
This year, PUSD has partnered with the Western Justice Center’s (WJC) to train students and employees on restorative practices that build trust among and between educators and students. This, in turn, reduces conflict in the classroom, expands learning time, increases attendance, and contributes
positively to both student academic performance and teacher retention.
The WJC program augments the district’s expansive student wellness services designed to take care of students’ social-emotional and physical well-being. PUSD has robust mental health services, social-emotional learning in the classroom, and other services that serve the whole child and remove obstacles to learning.
Nine community school programs support and connect students and their families to local, free/low-cost community resources and services.
PUSD schools have received numerous awards and honors including the California Distinguished or Gold Ribbon awards at least 22 times over the years.

Introducing the High Notes
Pasadena’s new choral group is for middle school students
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorMusic is the heart and soul of a well-rounded education, and Pasadena Chorale is extending its reach to middle school students.
A program of the Pasadena Chorale, the High Notes aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment where young talents can flourish, learn, and revel in the joy of choral music, said Pasadena Chorale and High Notes director Jeffrey Bernstein
The program is free, and auditions are open to students with soprano and alto voices in sixth to eighth grades from the Pasadena area. Auditions are scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at Altadena Community Church, with Bernstein.
Bernstein said the High Notes encourages young voices to embrace a range of choral repertoire, from classical masterpieces to contemporary melodies. Partici-
pants will learn essential skills, such as vocal technique, music theory, ensemble singing, and stage presence, bolstering their musical journey and personal growth.
“The High Notes meets the growing capacities of middle school students with the challenges that come with high-level choral singing, including music theory, vocal technique, and experience with foreign languages,” Bernstein said.
“All this takes place in a fun and supportive environment where students build friendships outside of school and experience first-hand the joy of singing well with other people.”
The High Notes will rehearse 75 minutes every Monday, August through May. In addition to weekly rehearsals, High Notes singers will perform several concerts throughout the year under Bernstein’s direction, including a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with a professional orchestra.
Pasadena Chorale’s The High Notes will host auditions on Monday, Aug. 21.
This is an excellent opportunity for young singers with a passion for choral music and desire to learn, Bernstein said.
“The High Notes is committed to providing young students with the gift of mu-
sic without any financial burden on their families. Participation in the choral group is entirely free of cost, ensuring that no aspiring singer is deprived of this enriching opportunity.”

Notice to potential bidders: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title
insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Notice to property owner: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (949)860-9155 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this internet website, www. chtrustdeed.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 23100149. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Notice to tenant: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (949) 305-8901, or visit this internet website, www.chtrus tdeed.com, using the file number assigned to this case 23100149 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate
professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Please take notice that if the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Further, if the foreclosure sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid and shall have no further recourse or remedy against the Mortgagor, Mortgagee, or Trustee herein. If you have previously been discharged in bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this notice is intended to exercise the note holders rights against the real property only. As required by law, you are notified that a negative credit reporting may be submitted to a credit report agency if you fail to fulfill the terms of your credit obligation. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL
BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
NOTICE TO PROPERTY
OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee’s sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-939-0772 or visit this internet website www.nation wideposting. com, using the file num-
ber assigned to this case 2023-10713. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not be immediately reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website.
First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 916-939-07 72, or visit this internet website www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2023-10713 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and affidavit or declaration described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.
