My late friend Dawn once asked me, “Why are you so concerned about the Equal Rights Amendment?”
“Because women are not part of the U.S. Constitution,” I said.
“Didn’t that get taken care of in the ’80s?” she asked. “I thought it was a done deal.”
“No. Not at all.”
“Wow. How could I have missed that?”
“Easy,” I said. “You may not realize this, but news about women’s so-called ‘liberation’ is not easy to find and even more difficult to disseminate. We, my friend, live in a patriarchy.”
Let me give you more context. Dawn was an accomplished appellate attorney with an ardent love for the U.S. Constitution. However, she had also bought into this country’s all-pervasive anti-feminist propaganda that, for decades, has told American women, “You have everything you want… What are you bellyaching about… You have it so good… Stop complaining… Feminists are ugly, man-hating harridans.”
Now that we’ve seen our reproductive rights obliterated due to the steady erosion of democracy and Supreme Court stacking of ultraright-wing misogynists, we can expect even more destruction of women’s rights.
It took seven decades for women to finally win the vote, although we were told then — and still are today — we were “granted” the vote. We weren’t granted anything, and we wouldn’t stop, thanks mainly to the Act III efforts of Alice Paul, a Quaker who personified grace and commitment to nonviolent social change.
Gandhi and Martin Luther King stood on her shoulders, whether they knew it or not. She excelled at what would become the nonviolent “bag of subversive acts”: hunger strikes, mass parades and picketing. She and her courageous colleagues picketed the White House and embarrassed Woodrow Wilson at his inauguration by upstaging him.
I’m proud to say the most critical revolution on the planet did not fire one shot. If you study war, you’ll get lessons in force-based strategies. A better idea is to study nonviolent social transformation, especially Alice Paul and the U.S. suffragists.
After women finally succeeded with the 19th amendment on Aug. 26, 1920, Paul realized the vote was only the start of true citizenship. She immediately set out to obtain two law degrees at the University of Pennsylvania and worked with lawyer Crystal Eastman to write what was to be known as “the Lucretia Mott Amendment.”
It is now called the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which reads: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” Sounds easy, right? Not so much.
Paul brought the original draft of the ERA to Seneca Falls, New York, the site of the first women’s rights convention. She recited it at the same podium where, 75 years earlier, Elizabeth Cady Stanton presented the Declaration of Human Sentiments. Paul proclaimed that the only right women had gained since then was the right to vote. Voting was one milestone, yet there were so many others to achieve.
With Stanton’s spirit upon her, Paul then took the ERA draft to the
grave of Susan B. Anthony and received more energy from the spirit of Anthony. The ERA was first introduced to Congress on July 21, 1923. Finally, on March 22, 1973, the Equal Rights Amendment was passed by the U.S. Senate and sent out to the states for ratification.
Even though the required 38 states have ratified the amendment, it is currently being held hostage at the National Archivist’s office, waiting to be registered. What’s the holdup? I’m angry and dismayed to learn women’s rights are once again relegated to a back-burner.
This brings me to an event I heartily invite you to attend, and encourage the men in your life to attend, too. We need allies to finish this constitutional landmark decisively. Hosted by the National Women’s History Alliance, “The ERA: The Time is Now!” is a webinar at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, moderated by Christine Pelosi, lawyer, author, political strategist and daughter of Rep. Nancy Pelosi.
The panelists are all ERA veterans: Ting Ting Cheng, director of Columbia Law School’s ERA Project; the honorable Carolyn Maloney, former U.S. Rep from New York; Eleanor Smeal, president and co-founder of the Feminist Majority; and Zakiya Thomas, president and CEO of the ERA Coalition & Fund for Women’s Equality. Webinar registration is $20 at nationalwomenshistoryalliance.org/events/era.
What could be better than finally using the 100th anniversary of the ERA being introduced in Congress to register it? The ratified amendment is just sitting there, gathering the dust of broken hearts. We need to be equal, now more than ever.

The Los Angeles Aerial Rapid Transit’s (LA ART) proposal for the Dodger Stadium Gondola project has reached a new milestone following the release of a Draft Environmental Impact Report by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The report, which evaluated the environmental benefits and impacts of an aerial gondola connection between Union Station and Dodger Stadium, found the project would reduce congestion and reduce emissions by over 150,000 metric tons of greenhouse gasses in its lifetime.
“Since Dodger Stadium opened, there’s not been permanent transit. This project is really all about creating that permanent transit link, but most importantly tying into the region’s transit hub at Union Station,” said David Grannis, executive director of Zero Emissions Transit, the nonprofit leading the project.
The Dodger Stadium Gondola was announced in 2018 as a zero-emission transit option that would take 3,000 cars off the roads on game days, according to LA ART. The gondola would be free to ride for anyone attending a game at Dodger Stadium and cost the same price as a Metro fare for anyone who lives or works in the area. It would operate year-round and
take riders seven minutes to travel from Union Station to Dodger Stadium.
Grannis explained gondola systems have proliferated globally, providing a green alternative to automotive travel LA could learn from. He noted successful examples in places like London and Mexico City. The gondola network is proposed to run above roads and transit lines, inspired by the cable car lines of La Paz, Bolivia, which were built above the city streets and have reportedly carried 100 million riders since their construction.
“They’re climate resilient and friendly; they’re quiet, they’re inexpensive to operate and they’re much less expensive to build,” he said. “When you have topography, rivers (and) mountainous terrain, it’s a perfect solution. … We can carry 10,000 people to every game. If you look at the average game, we’re carrying 20% of the attendance, which makes a huge difference in the traffic around and in the neighborhoods.”
The system, which cycles a cabin through each station every 23 seconds, would consist of three cables — two used to support the weight of the gondolas and one to pull them along. Each cabin could hold 35 to 40 people and would have a reconfigurable layout to accommodate wheelchair access.
The project would also create three new
stations in Downtown: Dodger Stadium Station; Chinatown/State Park Station at the southwest corner of the LA State Historic Park; and Alameda Station, which would stand adjacent to Union Station on Alameda Street. The system would serve the communities of El Pueblo, Chinatown, Mission Junction, Solano Canyon and William Meade Homes while providing simple access to the area for cities of the San Gabriel Valley.
“Chinatown/State Park Station is an A Line connection,” Grannis said. “We are 500 feet away from that station in Chinatown, so you can connect back and forth right here. Twenty percent of Dodger attendees come from the San Gabriel Valley, so San Gabriel Valley residents have a great way of getting here on public transit for little to no cost. … If you have a Dodger ticket, you will ride the gondola for free.”
While some residents and business owners in neighborhoods like Chinatown have applauded the project for encouraging visitors to return and engage with businesses impacted by the pandemic, others have criticized the proposal and argued it would shift traffic congestion from Dodger Stadium into the communities surrounding the gondola stations.
“Attendees will still need to reach Union Station to take the gondola, creating another traffic issue in that area and can also lead to an increase in traffic in the Boyle Heights area,” the Wall Las Memorias Executive Director Richard Zaldivar said in a statement in 2022. “It not only will create havoc on the streets, but it is also an invasion of our community space, affecting one of the few green areas that the residents have to enjoy by going over the Los Angeles State Historic Park. We believe we can find a better solution to this problem and that we should work with the community to find one that works for all.”
To include community voices in the development of the gondola proposal, the project team spoke with local households, businesses, community organizations and environmental advocacy groups. This process caused the team to change the initial location plan for the Chinatown/State Park Station.
Grannis explained that during the notice of preparation process in October 2020, ahead of their Environmental Impact Report (EIR) submission, the Chinatown community raised its voice.
“They said, ‘We really don’t think this station is appropriate for Chinatown because … we want something much closer to Chinatown’s core,’” Grannis recalled. “We took
that to heart, and by the time we did our Draft EIR a year and a half later, we had moved this station and did a junction here so that it was directly serving Chinatown.
“We’re also doing a bridge connecting to North Broadway (from the LA State Historic Park). The park is 30 feet lower than Broadway, and the A Line runs through here, so there’s no way that this community can access the State Historic Park. We are actually clearing a pedestrian bridge here, which … the whole community can use to access the park.”
To date, nearly 6,000 people and over 340 businesses in Chinatown, El Pueblo and Lincoln Heights have signed up to support the project.
“There is no question this project will benefit the local community,” said Martin Farfan, president of Cathedral High School, located along the proposed gondola route. “The LA ART project could make it easier for Cathedral High School students to access public transit and improve traffic around the school and community on game days.”
The aerial gondola would provide the first permanent transit connection to Dodger Stadium since its construction 60
With the aim of reducing game day traffic, the Dodger Stadium Gondola would be able to carry an estimated 10,000 people to every game with cabins cycling through each station every 23 seconds.
years ago, and would be the first three-cable gondola lift built for public transit in the United States, Grannis said.
“Now, more than ever, we need thoughtful solutions that take cars off the road and lead to a more connected Los Angeles,” said Jonathan Parfrey, executive director of Climate Resolve. “The aerial gondola project will be the first of many more
emission-free innovations that will help reduce air pollution and improve quality of life for all Angelenos.”
Grannis added, “I want this to be a catalyst for LA to get to zero emission in the transportation sector.”
The Draft EIR will have a 60-day public review period during which the public can provide comments. Grannis said he hopes
the EIR will be certified by the fall. After certification, he estimated the construction and testing phase would be completed by the first quarter of 2028.
At Dodger Stadium, a full-size gondola cabin exhibit will remain on display for the rest of the season, allowing visitors to experience what it would be like to ride inside it and to learn more about the project.
As construction of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing continues, the local nursery has collected millions of seeds and plants to cover the structure and aid the animals in the open area.
Living Habitats LLC leads the project and has collaborated with expert staff from the Santa Monica Mountains Fund, the National Park Service, Caltrans and the Mountain Recreation Conservation Authority to collect millions of native seeds to boost biodiversity.
The crossing is meant for wildlife, specifically mountain lions, to be able to safely cross through the busiest highway in the
nation, the 101 Freeway. The local collection of various seeds helps support biodiversity. The team of architects will use over a million seeds, including coast live oak, toyon, ceanothus, sages, buckwheat and penstemon, to add on the crossing. Their planting is intended to connect and show the value of architecture based on science.
“By collecting seed in that immediate vicinity and growing these plants like genetic seed stock, we’re helping to extend that footprint forward and bolster the biodiversity there locally,” said Robert Rock, who leads the design team.
The monumental crossing will span over 10 freeway lanes in the Agoura Hills area in Los Angeles. A restoration plan is in the works with nearly one acre of new
native wildlife habitat, which creates an environment for the animals to thrive.
“When we think about how we move through these spaces, we have the things that are disruptive to us, whether it’s the traffic or it’s the construction. But if you take a moment to reflect on how you know an animal that comes up against that freeway edge, you’ve got the sound, the light, that vigorous movement corridor — it’s this crazy level of boundary that we as humans don’t quite understand the same way that the animals do.”
that came in and started to take over the site that we’re kind of constantly having to eat away at.”
The nursery has also provided a sense of community and has encouraged engagement. There are regular events for those interested in volunteering, as well as university students doing ecological research.
Though there have been years of planning, the nursery officially began back in 2022. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
The recent work at the nursery will also ensure the animals are surrounded by and thrive in the natural environment. Today, local California mountain lions are threatened due to a lack of shelter, food, water and wildlife spaces to thrive. The crossing will primarily be home to mountain lions, bobcats, California bats, desert cottontails and other animals.
“As long as people are willing to set aside their ego at the door and realize that, you know, we can do this as long as we’re all heading in the right direction and we’re all genuinely wanting to work together and collaborate.”
Stage two of the endeavor requires nearly 50,000 individual plants to span over 12 acres of open space to the north and south of the freeway. These areas are still in recovery after the 2018 Woosley Fire. The ecological restoration will restore about 13 acres of wildlife habitat in the Santa Monica Mountains.
“The project is also this opportunity to allow the site to rebound from that fire, and it was intense. It burned out a lot of things, and there’s a lot of invasive mustards
Legendary rock group Chicago has been on the road annually for the last 56 years, taking a break for 15 months due to the pandemic. Trumpet and flugelhorn player Lee Loughnane said the band members sacrifice their personal life to entertain the masses.
“It is problematic not to be able to spend the time that most people get to spend with their families at home. To do what we do for a living, we have to take our music to the audiences,” Loughnane said.
In five decades, Chicago has sold more than 100 million copies of its 38 albums. Blending jazz, R&B, classical and pop. The hits include “You’re the Inspiration,” “If You
Leave Me Now,” “Hard to Say I’m Sorry,” “Saturday in the Park” and “25 or 6 to 4.”
Loughnane said Chicago fans can expect to hear songs from various decades, starting with “Introduction” from their first album.
“It’s a pretty well-rounded show,” he said. “It covers everything we have done and are doing.”
Loughnane is one of the three original members; he joins vocalist Robert Lamm and trombonist James Pankow. More than 50 years ago, they were the first nonclassical group to perform at Carnegie Hall six nights in a row.
The group was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2014 and awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammys in 2020. They were inducted into the Rock &
Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
Loughnane said the group’s sound has evolved over the years as players change.
“The guys who have left for whatever reason, when they were replaced, it’s always been with somebody who is a good musician,” he said.
“They’ve grown up with the music as we did when we were playing it and writing it. They grew up listening to it. They have always fit in very nicely as members of the band by bringing their own personality to the same music they grew up with.”
When it started, the group had no idea it would be around 50 years later.
Chicago will film its Nov. 17 and Nov. 18 shows at the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City for a special called “Chicago & Friends.” It will be available for global distribution airing in late December.
“It never happens. This is an anomaly. This is something that is pretty much impossible to do. We’re just living it,” Loughnane said.
On Nov. 17 and Nov. 18, Chicago will film shows at the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City for a special called “Chicago & Friends.” It will be available for global distribution airing in late December.
Chicago will perform their biggest hits with guitar virtuoso Steve Vai, Robin Thicke and Chris Daughtry.
In celebration of the 55th anniversary of their double-platinum album, “Chicago Transit Authority,” they will play songs from the album both nights, along with other greatest hits.
To have longevity like Chicago, it takes luck, consistency, dedication and hard work, he said.
“You have to keep yourself ready to play shows and be excited about playing the shows,” Loughnane said.
“For us, that’s the reason that we are out there, the 22 or so hours that we are traveling, staying in a hotel or getting ready for the next venue. You have a lot of alone time, even if you sit down and eat with the other guys. Most of the time you are by yourself. You have to enjoy life and figure out how to spend quality time with yourself.”
He fills his days working out at hotels and
playing music.
“I have my horn with me all the time,” he said.
“So, I always wake up in the morning or afternoon and start practicing, getting ready for the show. And get some food, a walk around the area, reacquaint yourself where you are because the night before, we were 400 or 500 miles away in a different city. Then, we traveled overnight to get to the next place, and by the time we get there, you wake up from the bus ride, check in to the hotel, go to sleep again and sleep as many hours as you can to keep yourself together. Then, you get up and start practicing and preparing for the next show.”
Although he mainly performs on flugelhorn and trumpet, he has played other instruments for performances and albums.
“I play a little guitar, background vocals mainly, a couple of lead vocals,” he added.
“I play a little bit of keyboard, mainly to write songs on guitar and keyboard. I’ve played guitar onstage with the band a few times. And I was playing the Moog synthesizer for a number of years during the ‘Chicago 17’ and ‘Chicago 18’ tours. I was playing a lot of bass parts during that time. … We don’t hire other people to come in and do background vocals for us. We do everything in-house, the horns, the vocals, the playing, everything.”
Los Angeles has some of the most well-known concert venues in the country, from intimate clubs to theaters and stadiums. The best concert venues, however, also have beautiful scenery — and a storied history — that enhance the sonic experience. The Sunday Afternoon Concerts in the Dome inside Mount Wilson Observatory, located on the 5,710-foot-tall peak above Pasadena in the San Gabriel Mountains, marry science, nature and art with a live music series that attracts both would-be astronomers and music lovers.
“You see LA from above and it’s magical,” said series artistic director Cécilia Tsan of Culver City.
“Yes, it’s a bit harder to breathe up there. But the views on the grounds are so stunning and inspiring. It’s a good introduction to what you’re going to experience when you are in the dome and feeling the connection of music and the universe.”
Astrophysicist George Ellery Hale founded Mount Wilson Observatory in 1904 as a research facility. It houses two famous tele-
scopes, the 60-inch telescope (completed in 1908) and 100-inch Hooker telescope (completed in 1917), both of which were the largest telescopes in the world for decades.
Astronomer Edwin Hubble used the 100inch from 1923 to 1929 to make the discovery that not only was the universe home to millions of other galaxies, but the universe itself was expanding. Only the 60-inch is currently being used for solar research.
Today, the observatory hosts lectures, tours, art installations and “art parties.” Past the winding roads, hiking trails, pine trees and amazing panoramic view, Mount Wilson is also home to several TV and radio antennas.
In 2017, Mount Wilson Institute board of trustee Dan Kohne and executive director Thomas Meneghini contacted Tsan in the hopes of adding concerts to the observatory’s events. Tsan, who’s originally from Paris, was familiar with many musicians in town, having been the principal cellist with the Long Beach Symphony, as well as with the LA Master Chorale and Pasadena Symphony Orchestra.
Tsan posted a video of herself testing the observatory’s acoustics with her cello on Facebook, which she said went viral with more than 12,000 views in a week.
“They were curious to know if the acoustics would be good for such a concert, so it was kind of a challenge,” Tsan recalled.
“But you know, astronomy has always been about exploring the biggest question of the universe by looking at distant stars, and in a similar way, music has always been about exploring new worlds, but from the sound. So, we decided to see what we could create. We thought that music and art are a tribute to the human brain and creativity.”
During the performance, the audience and musicians are seated under the 100-inch, and when weather permits, the dome opens and rotates at the beginning of the program. Each season includes six concerts — two performances per show — and runs from May until October. Tsan also curates one or two jazz performances throughout the year, which in the past has included appearances by Peter Erskine, legendary drummer of famed jazz-fusion band Weather Report.
This month’s concert spotlights the LAbased Zelter String Quartet, which formed in 2018 and includes violinists Kyle Gilner and Gallia Kastner, violist Carson Rick and cellist Allan Hon. The program offers Puccini’s Crisantemi, Mendelssohn’s String
Quartet No. 2 in A Minor and LA composer Todd Mason’s String Quartet No. 3. The season’s remaining dates will feature the Long Beach Symphony and Los Angeles Reed Quintet.
“I want the audience to walk away with basically a message of unity,” Tsan said.
“To me, when I see how people can connect through music, it makes me happy. You hear about the chaos in the world and all the tragedies, and I feel like people have this privileged moment during the music in a place where the universe was rediscovered, and it gives them hope for humanity. From what I’m hearing with the people I talk to after the concerts, their minds and hearts are very uplifted by that.”

American artist R.B. Kitaj’s bibliophilia and reverence for the written word are woven throughout his larger-than-life screen prints on display in The Huntington’s newest exhibit, “In Our Time: Prints by R.B. Kitaj.”
The exhibit features newly acquired works, depicting hyper realistic replicas of well-worn book covers — stained and torn — and explores the intersection between literary and visual arts, the art of screen printing and the social and political issues that Kitaj examined. The exhibition is ongoing at the Huntington Art Gallery through Monday, March 4. Kitaj died Oct. 21, 2007.
“In the context of The Huntington and its renowned collection of books and rare books, the portfolio In Our Time has a unique resonance,” said Sabina Zonno,
The Huntington’s curatorial research associate of European art and curator of the exhibition.
“Many of the books pictured can be found in the library’s stacks.”
The artwork featured in the exhibition is drawn from Kitaj’s portfolio titled “In Our Time: Covers for a Small Library After the Life for the Most Part” (1969-70), which The Huntington acquired in 2020. The title can be dissected into two parts: “In Our Time” is presumably a reference to Ernest Hemingway’s 1925 short story collection of the same name, and “After the Life,” which was added at the behest of art critic Robert Melville, refers to drawing from a life model, as Kitaj does in using books as models for his screen prints.
The exhibition will consist of two installation rotations, each highlighting 22 screen prints, with 44 total works. Kitaj’s prints of imperfect and sometimes reimagined cov-
ers highlight the texture and fragility materiality of books, reflecting his aesthetic, political and cultural ideals. The covers he chose to print reflect his experiences and artistic identity and explore his Jewish Heritage and American upbringing.
For example, his prints “La Lucha del Pueblo Español por su Libertad,” the cover of a photo book of leftist propaganda from the Spanish Civil War, and “Wir haben es nicht vergessen,” referring to Nazi atrocities in Poland during World War II, disclose Kitaj’s interest examining social and political ideologies, global conflicts and civil wars.
Other prints are more subtle, depicting covers of books that delve into the lives of the poor and disadvantaged in society, like “Articles,” “Pamphlets” and “Workers in the Dawn.” Some book covers in the exhibit depict highly moralistic topics concerning capital punishment in England or
human trafficking. In addition to thematic elements, the exhibition will also reveal the process Kitaj and Prater used to produce their collaborative screen prints.
Although originally from Ohio, Kitaj spent most of his life in London, where he moved following the devastation of World War II. Kitaj was a well-known figure in the “School of London,” a term he coined referring to a loose group of painters, including David Hockney, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, who pursued figurative painting in a world dominated by abstraction.
After primarily working as a painter, Kitaj began printmaking in 1962 under the tutelage of master screenprinter Chris Prater at London’s Kelpra Studio. The art form became a significant focus for Kitaj in the late 1960s, and the exhibit features prints from this time born of a trans-Atlantic collaboration between, Kitaj, who designed the prints during a stint in Califor-
nia, and Prater and Marlborough Fine Art in London.
All the book covers displayed in the exhibit were published during Kitaj’s time living in Los Angeles and teaching at UCLA and reflect important tomes in Kitaj’s collections. One print, “Final, City of Burbank, California, Annual Budget,” in-
cludes details like a ripped edge where the cover might have been separated from the binding, reimagining the highly recognizable image as a cultural icon.
“As a set, these screen prints can be interpreted as an intellectual self-portrait of an artist who was also a passionate reader and book collector,” Zonno said.
“In Our Time: Prints by R.B. Kitaj” is on display at the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens.

CatCon is comparable to comic con, but it celebrates cats and pop culture with over 150 exhibitors, experiences galore, giveaways and the biggest adoption lounge at the Pasadena Convention Center. Staff photographer Chris Mortenson was there to capture the event.
Since the late 19th century, Pasadena has attracted people from all walks of life. Drawn by California sunshine and ample opportunity, newcomers came in tow with their cultures, recipes and suitcases. “Old Pasadena Food Tasting Walking Tour,” presented by Melting Pot Tours, charts Old Town’s past to its current culinary legacy, capturing the full-bodied spirit of the city.
Tourists and locals alike frequent the 3.5-hour tour, which takes visitors through colorful alleys and historical streets, stopping at family-owned restaurants for curated tastings of traditional British teas, gourmet chocolates and regional Indian fare, to name a few.
“We can’t fit everything (into the tour),” Melting Pot Tours owner Jody Flowers noted. Maybe not everything, but the tour is jam-packed with 10 stops and historical and cultural sights on each block, including the original Pasadena City Hall, a stately brick building that now houses a Patagonia store, and St. Andrews Catholic Church, the oldest Catholic Parish in Pasadena.
The tour commences at Amara Cafe, a renowned Old Town establishment known for its Venezuelan cuisine, featuring delicacies like hot sipping chocolate and empanadas. The route then takes visitors through the heart of Old Town, focusing on shops in and around Colorado Boulevard.
“Everyone’s a small business,” Flowers said. “What we share on the food tour is their time-honored family recipes. You’re tasting the recipes they brought home from their home country.”
The comprehensive dining tour includes visits to Chado Tea Room for a British tea tasting; Tortas Mexico, which has been a Pasadena staple for over 25 years, for steaming tortas and ice-cold agua frescas; Father Nature Lavish Bistro for a taste of the Middle East with falafel, tahini and tabbouleh; and Dots Cupcakes for signature cupcakes.
The stories behind the food are just as
much of the tour as the cuisine itself. Flowers and the team have maintained “great relationships with the merchants,” learning the histories that have shaped their food.
For example, Mignon Chocolate, a gourmet chocolatery, began as a bakery in 1910 by owner Anoush Ter Poghossian’s grandfather in Ukraine before being banished to Siberia by the Soviet Union’s Communist regime. After, he escaped to Tehran, where the family business expanded to chocolate in the 1960s and was frequented by the Shah and his family.
The tour will also make tasting stops at All India Cafe, which offers regional fare from across India and was awarded “Best Indian Food in Pasadena” by Pasadena Weekly in 2016, and We Olive, a gourmet olive oil store and wine bar with California olive oil and balsamic vinegar tastings.
Between tastings, visitors will explore the “Big Bang Theory” Alley, named after the TV series set at Pasadena’s California Institute of Technology. They will also visit Memorial Park to see commemorative statues of fallen Pasadena soldiers and Castle Green, a nationally registered historical monument that was originally a hotel.
Melting Pot Tours began in 2008 by sisters and LA natives Diane and Lisa Scalia. Flowers purchased the company in early 2022 after a long career in hospitality. The business hosts similar tasting tours in East LA, East Village Long Beach and the Original Farmers Market. “It was easy,” Flowers said of taking over the business. “It’s all about it’s all about hospitality and service.”
It would not be an Old Town tour without mentioning the efforts in the late 20th century to preserve and revitalize the district. From the late 1800s to the 1930s, saloons, church steeples and blacksmiths lined Colorado Boulevard. Developers aimed to create a “little Athens of the West,” Flowers said.
But after the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the area declined, facing urban decay and neglect. In the 1970s, a group of preservationists began a concerted effort to pre-
serve the district’s architectural heritage.
The plan gained momentum in the 1980s when city officials, business owners and community members collaborated to devise a comprehensive revitalization plan. The goal was to restore the area’s historic charm while creating a thriving commercial and cultural hub.
“Saving old Pasadena is one of the greatest preservation stories in American history,” Flowers said. “It had its day, it lost everything, and then through grass-
roots efforts and community members, they saved it from the wrecking ball. … Everyone’s a beneficiary because of those efforts.”
Tours are 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays and can accommodate two to 40 or 50 people, but the average tour typically consists of 10 participants. Private tours are also available for parties and businesses. Vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free individuals are welcome, with each stop offering suitable alternatives.

Blue is a flavor.
Leah Ferrazzani, the owner and operator of Semolina — the artisanal pasta operation on Lincoln Avenue — is quick to recall it as her favorite flavor of Italian ice as a child growing up on the East Coast.
“I’m a Long Island kid,” Ferrazzani said. “I grew up in New York. Italian ices and fireflies are basically summertime in my brain. My favorite flavor growing up was ‘blue,’ which I think is ‘blue raspberry,’ but we just called it ‘blue.’”
Italian ice happens to be Ferrazzani’s most recent culinary obsession. It’s the latest addition to her front-of-house offerings that now also include a menu of made-toorder Italian sandwich preps as well.
The snug lobby with a side window view of Semolina’s fresh pasta lab has previously served as an ancillary market of imported Italian delicacies. Over the past year or so, the space has further transformed to accommodate a modest deli counter with a small freezer case housing cherry, lemon, chocolate and, of course, blue Italian ice.
“On Long Island, you could get (Italian ice) everywhere,” she said. “They were at every Italian deli, at your favorite pizzeria. From the ice cream man, you could get the Marino’s Italian ices with the wooden stick. They were so refreshing and so different than anything else you could really get.”
Despite its name, Italian ice is a regional American invention. A former food writer, Ferrazzani speculated on the provenance of her favorite frozen confection.
“I don’t even know if there’s actually an analogue from Italy. It’s like sorbetto and granita had a baby. Granita is an ‘ice.’ It’s grated, but it’s a much coarser texture than Italian ice is,” she said.
“Or as someone from Philly might call ‘water ice.’ It’s a very distinctive tri-state area, Philly kind of thing and maybe a little Chicago. But once you leave those Italian American communities, they disappear into the ether. There are a couple of brands that sell them in the freezer section, but they just don’t quite taste the same.”
Semolina was already established as a fresh, dried pasta purveyor by the time Ferrazzani rediscovered Italian ice and the artisanal maker from whom her ices are sourced. She recalled the first encounter.
“So a few years ago — I can’t remember
exactly when, I have the COVID blur — I saw that an Italian ice place had opened in Thousand Oaks called Leone’s Italian Ices, actually the ‘Italian Ice King of California,’ which I think is a little joke on the ‘Italian Ice King of Corona’ Corona, Queens. Gregory Leone,” she said.
“His family has been making ices out in Brooklyn since the ’20s. So, he’s out here and just decided it was time to bring ices out to California. So I went with my kids and it was like I was at a block party with my neighbors and there were fireflies dancing in my head, and I said to him, ‘I want to sell these at my store.’”
Semolina’s offering of Leone’s ices just launched on July 5, after a prolonged process of permitting that included the accommodation of the sandwich service counter. Why would Ferrazzani, the pasta artisan, not attempt the ices herself?
“I don’t even fathom understanding the ins and outs of starting an Italian ice business. He makes ones that are phenomenal,” she said.
“They are as good or better than what I remember as a kid.”
She also noted the ices are completely nondairy and suitable for vegan palates.
That said, the colorful ices seem a tease to draw attention to Ferrazzani’s small menu of impressive hand-crafted sandwiches, a project that has been in development at Semolina even longer than the Italian ice idea.
“The sandwiches are not like old-school Italian deli sandwiches,” she said.
“They are not stacked so high you can’t wrap your mouth around them. We really focus on the highest-quality meats and cheeses and spreads.”
The inspiration for the sandwiches came
on a research trip to Oregon.
“I met with Elias Cairo at Olympia Provisions to talk mostly about being a producer, and I had his mortadella, and I became obsessed with his mortadella,” she said.
“That was the first sandwich I started imagining.”
Mortadella? A sophisticated precursor to bologna, Ferrazzani elaborated.
“It’s a traditional Italian forcemeat,” she said.
“It’s velvety and spiced and porky and yummy and usually has big hand-cut pieces of fat in it. A lot of versions from Italy — including the one from Olympia — have pistachios.”
Ferrazzani worked with the initial sandwich composition with Sam Schiffer, her former lead pasta maker, and landed on a pistachio aillade — a French nut spread — from chef Suzanne Goin. “And then stracciatella (cheese), which is the creamy inside of burrata. That was the first one that fully formed out of some conversations and then it was off to the races from there,” she recounted.
“The last two sandwiches are a salami calabrese, which uses Fra’ Mani’s salami from Paul Bertolli, who used to work long ago at Chez Panisse. … Calabrese with a Calabrian chili butter, and arugula and robiola, which is a triple creme Italian cheese that’s got a little bit of funk. It’s got goat and sheep’s milk, in addition to the cow’s milk.
“The last sandwich is the newest. That’s a Ceci sandwich and it has a really simple, garlic chickpea spread on it and then pickled fennel
and Castelvetrano olives, oregano and pepperoncini. That one is sweet and tangy and fennelly and crunchy and salty and vegetarian.”
It uses pecorino cheese but can be ordered without for vegans.
“When it comes to a vegetarian or vegan sandwich, I want it to be interesting and stand up on its own so that even if you’re a meat eater, it’s craveable. There are amazing vegetarian sandwiches in this city, but a lot of them are similar,” Ferrazzani posited.
The five sandwiches are served on fresh baguettes from Bub & Grandma’s in Glassell Park and are all priced at $15. The four flavors of Italian ice are served in generous paper cups at $6. Behind the deli counter and the freezer case, Ferrazzani is assisted by Deanna Maher.
Ferrazzani opened Semolina in 2014, after several years of experimenting at her home kitchen in Mount Washington, with methods of drying fresh pasta for retail sale. She manufactures and distributes a variety of fresh and dried pastas and the success of the pastas has allowed her to expand the scope of her interests and offerings.
“The pasta business is going full bore,” she said. “Currently, we’re in about 200 stores across the country and we make pasta for 12 to 15 restaurants, both fresh and dried.”
Her wholesale restaurant clients form an impressive local list.
“We sometimes make pasta for (Chris Bianco’s) Pizzeria Bianco. Locally we make pasta for Perle, Marina, Henry Parsons Project, Yang’s Kitchen, Matt Molina at Hippo, Wife and the Som in Glassell Park, and a number of places on the Westside,” Ferrazzani noted.
Her pastas are also available for sale via the new online iteration of the original Altadena Farmers Market (afm-subscription.com).
“We did it out of community spirit. It was a way to help the other vendors,” Ferrazzani added.
She assessed the evolution of her pasta operation and market shop, as she approached the freezer case.
“I want it to be the marriage of the Italian deli of my childhood with the California girl that I’ve become. We’re getting there,” Ferrazzani mused, while dropping a scoop of Italian ice into a paper cup.

Dr. Wendy Shem loves going to work every day at Walnut Hill Pasadena Optometrics. As the head of clinical care, Shem compares her staff and patients to family.
She carries that positivity, energy and passion into her daily work at Walnut Hill Pasadena Optometrics, where she is joined by associate doctors of optometry, Dr. Kristen Phifer and Dr. Jonathan Kiriboon.
Together, they provide eye and vision care, emphasizing family practice, contact lenses, medical eye care and surgical co-management for toddlers on up.
Because time is of the essence for urgent eye issues, Dr. Shem said patients who have an eye infection, red eye or a sudden change in vision can be seen the same day. It’s what she called “full-scope” optometry.
“We also offer either behavioral or developmental vision therapy, which is the practice of treating persons with crossed eyes, lazy eyes or learning-related vision problems.”
The practice also uses FDA-approved treatments to help manage dry eyes. That goes beyond typical eye drops.
“I have seen amazing and dramatic results treating my patients suffering from dry eyes with the Optilight IPL device as well as TearCare heat treatment system,” she said.
“My patients report feeling and looking, better almost immediately.”
Dr. Shem and her staff can also assist patients who struggle with contact lenses that fit correctly.
“We can fit specialty contact lenses to treat keratoconus or similar eye diseases, or for other hard to see vision issues,” she said.
They also treat people who are having issues with eyesight and/or headaches from using a computer. She offers Neurolens and Workspace technology to help patients struggling with headaches, fatigue and/or dizziness from working on the computer or other digital devices.
“We also have an amazing optical shop
on site,” Dr. Shem said.
“My opticians, Maureen and Savannah, love fitting our patient with the latest eyewear.”
Dr. Shem’s passion is preventing myopia, or nearsightedness, by using special contact lenses and medication.
“Coming from a very large family with really poor eyesight and high myopia, I don’t ever want to see a child grow up with poor vision,” she said. “There are so many things we can do to detect myopia risk and development early in a child’s life.”
Regardless of her patients’ eye problems, the Monrovia resident said she takes the time to thoroughly explain the issue and answer any questions.
“I believe that knowledge is power,” she said. “So, I take the time to educate my patients on their eye conditions and treatment so they are able to make knowl-
edgeable and informed decisions regarding their vision and eye health.
“Besides being an optometrist, I am also a mom. So, I really care about the kids, and I care about my grown-ups too. I love caring.”
Dr. Shem has been practicing optometry for more than 25 years, having earned her Bachelor of Arts in physical sciences from University of California at Berkeley in 1991. In 1996, she obtained her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry.
She has worked in the San Francisco Bay area and Honolulu before moving to Southern California in 2000. She is a clinical faculty member of Western Universi-
ty College of Optometry, a trustee board member of the San Gabriel Valley Optometric Association and has served multiple terms as president and director of continuing education.
Dr. Shem has volunteered with the Lions Club International and the Southern California Special Olympics to provide vision screenings and eye care to the underserved and special populations.
Dr. Shem is also proud to carry on the work of the practice’s founders, Drs. Robert Eastland and John Tassinari, whom she said were on the forefront of vision therapy.
“Dr. Eastland treated so many children with reading and learning disabilities, specialized in behavioral optometry and was a pioneer in visual training techniques,” she said.
“I am really, truly honored and proud to continue on with the legacy of treating children with reading and learning disabilities with vision therapy.”
For example, Dr. Shem has fond memories of working with a sixth-grade student who could not read.
“Kids made fun of her and called her dumb,” she said. “I diagnosed her quickly with learning-related vision problems called convergence insufficiency and eye tracking dysfunction.
“By early seventh grade and after intense vision therapy, she was an incredibly different person. She was talkative and had friends.”
Regardless of exam or treatment, Dr. Shem said she truly enjoys getting to know her patients.
“I love helping my patients lead better lives, if just for this one thing. And vision is a big thing,” she said. “I become invested in all of my patients’ lives.
“All of my staff and I care deeply for our patients, and we take the time to get to know everyone and care about every single one.”

With the school year on the horizon, Sylvan Learning executive director Todd Crabtree has shared his advice for parents of elementary, middle and high school students. Crabtree has worked in learning centers for the past three decades and says his mission has been to help children and young adults achieve their full academic potential.
At the start of the school year, Crabtree encourages parents to keep their students organized with not only their supplies but with their schedules.
“It’s really important, especially when you’re dealing with kids in the younger grades, to meet with the teacher,” Crabtree said. “For the older kids, it’s about getting the syllabus. … You need to understand what the school or the teacher is trying to accomplish that year.”
Crabtree said parents should review the syllabuses with their child and find out each teacher’s expectations in terms of grading and the weight of homework and tests.
“Most of us know, as adults, that when we were going through school, one teacher graded more on the test and didn’t care about the homework, then another teacher might say, ‘50% of your grade is just doing the homework,’” Crabtree explained. “It’s really important to understand those nuances … because a lot of kids don’t have the executive function to process all of that.”
For students moving from second to third grade, this preparation is essential when reading and writing expectations begin to change. Crabtree said from kindergarten through second grade, students are learning to read, but in third grade and beyond, they’re reading to learn.
“What that implies is if you are not a fluent reader going into third grade, you are behind, and you are at great risk of falling behind even further quickly because a third grade teacher’s job primarily is not to teach your child how to read;
they are teaching comprehension skills,” he explained.
Crabtree’s second piece of advice for parents, especially those whose students are entering an academic transition, such as the promotion from second to third grade, is to assess their child’s skills from an outside perspective using tutors or learning centers such as Sylvan Learning of Pasadena.
“We do a number of assessments that are academic, but also assessments that measure a child’s confidence and how they’re feeling just by asking them questions about how they feel about school,” he said. “Getting that validation as a parent and knowing where your child stands, and then being able to compare that if you’ve done your pre-work for the school year and knowing what the school is going to expect of you … it helps you kind of have this 360-degree view of what you’re in for that school year.”
Crabtree also emphasized the importance of positive feedback, explaining that confident students’ learning is accelerated because they are more motivated and eager to wrestle with new material and overcome obstacles.
“There’s a direct correlation between
them feeling better about a subject and wanting to do more of it,” he said. “Recognize your child’s attitude toward learning. If a child doesn’t like to play softball or soccer, it’s very easy just to say, ‘This sport is not for you.’ And most of the time, the reason why kids don’t develop a liking for a sport hinges on how much success they have with it initially. … If you start to get a lot of positive reinforcement, like if your coaches say, ‘Hey, you’re good at this,’ and you feel good at it, you want to do it.”
Crabtree recalled when he started his career, he felt so obligated to help the students academically he almost didn’t notice their attitudes and habits around learning. He was focused on teaching subjects like math but found “the skill of learning” was just as important.
“When you start to see your child get discouraged or they start avoiding things and start making these all-or-nothing statements like ‘I’m no good at math,’ those are huge red flags,” he said. “One of the things that we do at Sylvan is, by doing an assessment, we set up a personalized learning plan so that we are working at the child’s true ability level and so that they can experience some success.
“What happens with a lot of kids is they fall behind, they go into that next school year and they feel overwhelmed. … The parents delay getting them help. ‘Well, let’s just wait for the first report card.’ … Meanwhile, the child is not experiencing success at school, literally acting as negative reinforcement. The student gets sour, and they feel more defeated.”
Since many teachers do not often have the time in their work schedule to personally tutor students falling behind, Crabtree said tutoring can be essential for instilling healthy learning habits and improving academic performance and personal confidence. His third piece of advice is for parents to consider consulting with a Sylvan director or other professional to cater to each individual’s needs and help them excel through difficult periods.
“The pandemic was a wrecking ball, so more kids experience what some kids were before,” Crabtree said. “There are always kids who fall behind because of any disruption to a child’s learning. That could be a child losing a parent — I lost a parent in fifth grade. I was massively disruptive to my fifth grade school year. I had no idea at the time, but when I look back now as an adult who spent a career in education, I know that, had I not had a great teacher and some extra support, I could have fallen behind.”
Heading into the school year, Crabtree stressed that parents should be proactive, as grades are lagging indicators of a student’s experience. He said parents should trust their instincts because they are often aware of issues before a bad test score is released.
“Getting that assessment done in July and August before the school year starts, getting organized, figuring out what those expectations are going to be, knowing where your kid is at by getting an outside opinion, and then being proactive instead of reactive … it’s important,” he said. “And come to Sylvan.”
Heading into National Water Quality Month in August, Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) revealed the winners of the 2023 “Water is Life” art contest. Every year, PWP, in partnership with the Metropolitan Water District, issues a call for K-12 student artwork that explores the importance of water and conservation.
“As a community-owned utility, PWP takes pride in empowering local youth about water conservation and sustainability through educational programs like the ‘Water is Life’ art contest,” said PWP General Manager Sidney Jackson. “We thank Pasadena’s talented student artists for their great entries, which help support PWP’s commitment to environmental stewardship.”
Over 20 students from within PWP’s service territory submitted hand-drawn and painted art pieces, with messaging encouraging the community to conserve and use water wisely. The six student winners were chosen from Hamilton Elementary School, Madison
Elementary School, Sierra Madre Middle School, CIS Academy, Westridge School and La Salle College Preparatory School.
“It’s important to inform kids as early as they’re able to understand where their water comes from, where their power comes from and how important it is, especially living in Southern California, basically in a desert, to save water in this environment,” said PWP Public Information Specialist Janine Hou.
Among the winners, ninth grader Olivia Hur secured first place with her piece, depicting a faucet flowing from a branch with recycling imagery and slogans: “Conserve now” and “Let’s save water together.” Sixth grader Nathan Luhur nabbed third place for his cartoon rendering of a fisherman fishing for trash and cleaning up the ocean, empha-
sizing the need
keep water clean and pollutant-free.
Second grader Avery Yuen received second place with her circle of life-inspired artwork, depicting scenes of various animals connected by water with a rendering of Yuen’s hands in the middle containing a small pool of water. “Everything needs to water,” Yuen explained about her piece, which she completed over the course of two weekends. After finding a flyer about the contest, Yuen’s mother, Vivian, encouraged her to enter the contest since “Avery likes to draw little animals and cute things,” Vivian said.
Hou revealed many of her colleagues were surprised to learn how young Yuen was when presented with the second grader’s complex artwork. “They thought (her piece) was very eye-catching before they even learned Yuen’s age and grade,” Hou said.
Other finalists included kindergart-
ener Elena Montano, whose piece reminded viewers to save rainwater; seventh grader Tiffany Swarovski, who depicted Earth as a container for water and life; and 10th grader Audrey Montano, whose watercolor artwork conveyed the significance of using reusable water bottles.
PWP staff selected the winners through an online voting session. PWP Public Information Specialist Janine Hou shortlisted the top entries and had PWP staff rank their favorites based on creativity, visual appeal and how the artist conveyed the theme, considering the artists’ ages.
“We get quite a variety of different kinds of art, artistic talent, colors and interpretation of the theme,” said Jennifer Guess, PWP’s cus-
tomer relations program manager.
All six winning artworks were forwarded to MWD, which holds its own contest, inviting entries from 26 member agencies across Southern California. Winners will be included in the MWD annual calendar and showcased at the MWD’s annual ceremony at the end of the year.
The competition is a hopeful steppingstone for kids to learn about the importance of water in their communities and foster a sense of responsibility toward water conservation from an early age.
“It’s important to have these kinds of contests that are fun but also have a purpose in informing and engaging kids. The contest helps them learn more about their utility, where their resources come from and the fact that water is a finite resource,” Hou said. “Water-wise habits that they learn when they’re young builds the foundation for the kind of water-wise adults that they’ll be and then pass that on to their kids.”
Student-athletes from three Pasadena Unified School District high schools competed in the National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships

“The nerves before going on the track, everyone watching you, (wanting to) make everyone proud of you, all comes with this experience.”
Joshua Ezieme from Marshall Foundation competed in the 400 meter and the 4x400 relays in the 17 to 18 age division. After the 400-meter semifinals, Ezieme was in 21st place. He also took part in the 4x400 relay finals earning a top 10 finish in seventh place.
“This team has given me immense amounts of joy and memories that I will cherish for a long time,” Ezieme said. “I believe we lived up to our name as the Elite of Southern California.”
From Blair High School, Destiny Rayburn and Justin Guerriero competed in the 17 to 18 and 15 to 16 age groups, respectively. Rayburn competed in the long jump, earning 43rd place and competing in the 4x100, landing in 26th place.
Guerriero ended in 21st place in the triple jump and competed in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays earning 17th and 18th place, respectively.
“My experience was very cool,” Rayburn said. “It was like being in the actual Olympics. It was a very good one that I hope to experience next year.”
Guerriero said he was nervous.

John Muir High School Early College Magnet’s Mekhi Corner competed in the 17 to 18 age group. He took 48th in the 110-meter hurdles and 17th in the triple jump.
“I learned valuable lessons that showed me that hard work always pays off,” Corner said.
Knowles is proud of his athletes.
“It’s been a triumph for the kids to get here and for me as the coach it’s been eye-raising somewhat because you get kids from different backgrounds and they come together as a team,” Knowles said. “I believe this will be an experience that they will carry throughout their lives.”

In 1875, the year of the fi rst Derby, the majority of jockeys in the race were Black, in stark contrast to the present-day event, where participation by African American jockeys is rare. In “The First Kentucky Derby,” racing historian Mark Shrager examines the events leading up to the fi rst “Run for the Roses,” the unsuccessful effort the winning owner might have made to rig the race for his preferred horse and the prominent role played by African Americans in Gilded Age racing culture — a holdover from preemancipation days, when slaves were trained from birth to ride for their wealthy owners and grew up sur-
rounded by the horses that would be their life’s work.

Notice to potential bidders: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Notice to property owner: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursu-
ant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (949)860-9155 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this internet website, www. chtrustdeed.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 23-100149. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Notice to tenant: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase.

Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Please take notice that if the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Further, if the foreclosure sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale
shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid and shall have no further recourse or remedy against the Mortgagor, Mortgagee, or Trustee herein. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence,
priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
