An Open Letter to Polytechnic School
You’re not reading the room
By Ellen Snortland Pasadena Weekly ColumnistDear Polytechnic School in Pasadena, I am furious. I guess that’s not a terrific way to introduce myself. You don’t know me. I’m a proud Altadenan and have lived in this semi-rural, somewhat quirky and gloriously diverse community for over 20 years. When my husband and I arrived home last week, there on our hippie-dippie-looking back gate with a GuanYin mask was a beautifully designed flier from AltadenaWILD, a nonprofit dedicated to conserving our precious foothills. In the flier, the AltadenaWILD folks ever so politely explain why your proposed sports complex is a disastrous idea. To sign their petition, whether you are an Altadenan or Los Angeleno, go to altadenawild.org.
apt term for this debacle, as the Foothills are the front yards of the Angeles National Forest.
Surely, you’re aware of the recent warnings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) regarding imminent, irreversible climate devastation. Spaceship Earth is heading toward a climate iceberg. Would the captain of the Titanic, had he been prescient, still order his first mate to make sure the shuffleboard and tennis courts were shipshape? We in Southern California are not immune from the impact of climate catastrophe.
AltadenaWILD can be polite. As an opinion columnist, I don’t have to be polite. Imagine me with smoke billowing out of my ears, factory whistles blowing their stacks, anvils being pushed over cliffs onto your heads, and some very wily coyotes chasing you.
What are you thinking … are you out of your minds? Do you and your students and their families know how upset many of us Altadenans are? How many of your students live in Altadena? If there are Altadena families who attend Polytechnic, surely they’ve seen the “No Polytechnic School Sports Complex on Chaney Trail: Altadena Foothills Are Worth Protecting!” signs. Altadena residents have posted a litany of foreseeable complaints, including the inevitable increase in traffic, accidents, fire hazards, and noise and light pollution. The worst casualty of this pernicious plan would be our precious wildlife.
Dr. Riane Eisler, famous for her groundbreaking book “The Chalice and the Blade,” wrote another invaluable book called “The Real Wealth of Nations.” In it, she talks about how the dominant culture’s “lens” of white male supremacy views the world. For instance, it will look at a forest and only see how much the timber is worth. That, my friends, is a typical “colonizer” view.
In this circumstance, your board and donors see the beloved Nuccio’s Nursery property as tennis courts, baseball, soccer and football stadiums instead of an homage to nature. The Altadenans and AltadenaWILD consortium, an inclusive, diverse and nondominating group, looks at the Foothills of the San Gabriels and adjoining Angeles National Forest and sees its more abstract wealth: beauty, fresh air, flora and fauna flourishing, horse and nature trails, and leisure time for people — especially urbanites — who don’t have the resources to “get away.”
The proposed area for the sports complex looks like an opportunity for, at last count, more than 850 students to have a renewed athletics program that only a fraction of them participate in. Is this the best use for that area? Altadenans think not. The massive increase in the possibilities of fire hazards alone is daunting. For those who remember the Station Fire, the Bobcat Fire and other fires that have come close to us, it’s not a minor concern. And given the new growth from the rains and the projected heat waves coming, we do not need any new sources of possible fires. Really.
Not in my back yard (NIMBY) is the catchphrase for keeping undesirables out of a particular neighborhood, ranging from polluting sources to prisons. Not in my front yard (NIMFY) would be a more
You have heard the phrase “reuse, reduce, recycle,” right? Envisioning, raising funds for and building a new sports complex for an elite private school is tone-deaf. I’m all for sports (especially for typically marginalized groups), and I’m sure you have a plan for your new facilities to be gender equal, but geez! How would the neighborhood where Polytechnic School currently resides react if you bought up the surrounding area to erect a sports complex? We both know the answer, so why does going outside your current neighborhood seem possible or desirable? To whom? Indeed, not those of us who live here.
Please seriously consider doing the right thing — as in withdrawing your plans. You could be a visible model for other developers.
In closing, I got an email from someone the other day with a signature line that moved me. I asked her if I could copy it, and here it is.
“Writing from the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Tongva/Gabrielino People, I acknowledge my role as a settler in this land on Turtle Island, and I am very grateful. I recognize the ongoing harm and injustices of colonization, and I commit to working toward safe, inclusive, just, equitable and healthy communities for all.”

Mismanagement in McClain Case
Independent investigation recommends 27 PPD policy revisions
By Morgan Owen Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterAnthony McClain, 32, was killed in an officer-involved shooting in 2020. Two years later, the Pasadena Police Department determined the officers involved in the shooting “used deadly force consistent with department policy.” Now, an independent police audit of McClain’s death has recommended 27 changes to PPD inspired by department policy and its later investigation by the police review board of the incident.
One major recommendation by the review board was that PPD not allow civil proceedings to delay incident investigations. In the case of McClain, the police
investigation of his death was postponed due to a lawsuit put forward by McClain’s family against the city. That lawsuit concluded in November 2021 when the family obtained a $7.5 million settlement. Only after that dispute ended did PPD begin their investigation of officer Edwin Dumaguindin’s actions.
The decision to initiate a pursuit
During the incident in question, Dumaguindin pursued McClain after he and his partner, Officer Ryan Mulrooney, conducted a traffic stop involving McClain near La Pintoresca Park. McClain fled the scene after stepping out of the car at the officers’ request. Dumaguindin pursued
McClain and alleges he saw McClain grab a gun from his waistband before gesturing over his right shoulder with the intention to fire.
The independent review questioned PPD’s lack of investigation over Dumaguindin’s decision to engage in a foot pursuit. The report found that Dumaguindin was never asked by investigators why he decided to engage in the foot pursuit of McClain. However, Dumaguindin did articulate that he believed McClain intended to commit a crime and that McClain had a firearm.
tion procedures that did not question his actions and his decision to continue the pursuit of McClain despite a marked increase in danger to himself and others. Deficiencies in crime scene management
The independent review of PPD’s investigative process did identify positive procedures, such as immediately uploading available body-worn camera footage and conducting an on-the-scene walkthrough with the investigative team and Officer Mulrooney.
Dumagundin stated he did not believe there was an alternative, but the independent review determined that, in their view, “Dumaguindin made several decisions that placed him, his partner and the public at risk” by deciding to continue the foot pursuit while Mulrooney remained with another detained suspect.
“Dumaguindin was pursuing an armed suspect — at close range and alone — in an open roadway with no cover, while his partner stayed in the open roadway between Mr. McClain and the unsecured driver.”
Seven seconds after McClain leaves the vehicle and Dumaguindin makes chase, Dumaguindin discharged the two rounds that ultimately killed McClain.
While the independent investigation did not make any recommendations to PPD’s policy regarding Dumaguindin’s decision to pursue McClain, they called into ques-
However, deficiencies in crime scene management allowed for allegations of crime-scene tampering and called into question the validity of evidence acquired from the scene. Many community members alleged the gun McClain was carrying was planted by officers after his death.
“Initially, there was no systematic plan (e.g., grid search) for searching for Mr. McClain’s firearm. On a body-worn camera from that evening, we observed officers walking at random up and down the roadway while others searched front yards and under parked cars. Ultimately, Officer 4 happened upon the firearm, though the footage shows several officers walk by its location,” stated the report.
Furthermore, the report stated that Dumaguindin and Mulrooney were not sequestered and allowed to interact with other officers. Dumaguindin was also permitted to move through the crime scene
and interacted with evidence. Specifically, the report states he moved his hobble restraint device.
Regarding Dumaguindin’s actions, the review board recommended the department revise its policy to immediately sequester officers involved in a shooting unless it compromises public safety or the officer has a special need to assist with evidence location.
Regarding crime scene management, the report also stated that members of the public were allowed to walk through the crime scene; that none of the responding officers declared themselves the incident commander, causing confusion; and that poor placement of the Command Post resulted in officer safety issues.
Issues with incident reports
After Dumaguinden was sequestered by leadership, he was released home without giving a voluntary or administrative statement. He was not asked to do so until two full days after the incident. Likewise, Mulrooney did not provide his account until the following day. Officers 3, 4 and 6, who were not identified by name in the report, “did not provide statements until nearly two years later.”
Despite taking nearly two years for PPD to complete their investigation, the independent review found that the department erred when they aimed to “speed up” the investigation by limiting its scope to only Dumaguindin and Mulrooney, rather than all officers present at the scene; this led to some individuals involved never being interviewed.
The review board recommended that in addition to immediately sequestering officers involved, the department should monitor involved officers until they provide an interview before being released the same day of the incident. In a similar yet separate recommendation, the board recommends PPD amend the policy to require “end of shift” interviews for all involved and witness officers. A third recommendation stated that PPD should ensure the department obtains accounts from all officers involved.
The report explicitly recalls a recommendation that PPD interview officers more promptly was already made in connection to an earlier incident where PPD waited 36 hours to interview officers in the McDade shooting. The recommendation was rejected by the department at that time.
Body camera footage
In the initial investigation conducted by
PPD, Dumaguindin was found guilty of failing to comply with departmental policy when he did not activate his body-worn camera.
This allegation was contained to Dumaguindin toward body camera footage in the initial investigation. However, the independent review found that this issue persisted among other officers involved in the incident; several officers turned off their body-worn cameras and failed to reactivate them, contrary to departmental policy.
“While some of the violations were of minimal consequence to the final outcome … one was critical: Officer 4’s failure to reactivate his body-worn camera after turning it off during a private phone call. This was of sufficient concern to the administrative investigator to delay completion of the investigation for an administrative interview of Officer 4,” the report stated.
Those who did have their body cameras turned on were allowed to review video footage of the incident before providing their statements. The report details that a similar situation occurred in the McDade shooting.
In response, the report quoted their earlier assessment regarding pure recall given in that incident to further their point that allowing officers to review footage is not best practice and that it creates an impression that investigators are trying to influence officers’ accounts so they appear in line with existing evidence.
“Today, it has been ... eight years after we last issued this recommendation. Our perspective remains the same. Again, we recommend that the department reconsid-
er its practice of allowing officers to view video footage before being interviewed.”
Department response
In response to the results of the investigation, Police Chief Gene Harris released a statement agreeing to address 24 out of the 27 recommendations. Harris identifi ed that the department has determined the recommendations have either been implemented or will be moving forward.
The first recommendation PPD disagreed with was that the department train officers to “make clear that witnesses are not suspects” and that “officers should not run a witness’ identity or vehicle plates unless officers can articulate a rationale for doing so.” The memo released by Harris stated that this recommendation (No. 12) conflicts with an earlier recommendation (No. 11) that officers gather all available evidence.
The second recommendation PPD did not agree with was that the Department should create a policy that identifies the role of a police officer at critical incident crime scenes. The memo states that “circumstances and on-duty personnel will
dictate who is at the crime scene during a critical incident” and that “the department will comply with the Police Officers Bill of Rights.”
One recommendation the department deferred judgment to the Community Police Oversight Commission. The recommendation urged the commission to convene community conversations to discuss the benefi ts and detriments of PPD’s use of pretext traffi c stops, especially regarding minor violations. This recommendation is in reference to the fact that McClain and the driver of the occupied vehicle were pulled over by Dumguindin and Mulrooney because of tinted windows.
The PPD and Harris agreed or agreed in concept with the 24 remaining recommendations.
“On behalf of the police department, I applaud the process and believe it will assist significantly in applying lessons learned moving forward as we provide enhanced policing services in the safest, most comprehensive and most professional manner possible. All, while meeting or exceeding the needs and expectations of our community,” Harris said.
Defending Democracy … And Other Things
Adam Schiff runs for U.S. Senate
By Morgan Owen Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterAdam Schiff knows any one of the other Democratic candidates running for one of California’s two Senate seats would make qualified representatives. The question he poses to the electorate is, who can make the most progress? For Schiff, that is the most pressing query for voters in the 2024 Senate election.
“I have the strongest record of bringing people together with different viewpoints to get things done. I’ve had dozens of bills passed during times of Republican and Democratic governors and presidents, so I have a track record of getting things done that Californians care about,” Schiff argued. “Everything from legislation to guarantee textbooks in schools … to an earthquake early warning system. I’ve demonstrated leadership by being in the center of those fights, not on the sidelines.”
Currently, Schiff represents California’s 30th congressional district, which includes
Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank and West LA.
From 1996 to 2000, he was a member of the California State Senate. Before serving in Congress, Schiff worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles. He believes this experience in government and elected office will be an asset if elected to replace Dianne Feinstein as senator, who has served as California senator since 1992.
Schiff is campaigning on four major issues: democracy reform, combating the climate crisis, the economy and universal health care. In particular, Schiff spoke about points in his campaign he believes would interest Pasadena residents, including public transportation, protecting the local environment and gun safety.
“I’m very proud to be known as the father of the Gold Line. That was created through a joint powers agreement. I’m very conscious (that) I was able to build it on time and on budget,” Schiff said. “And I’ve tried to bring about legislation to expand the National Recreation Area by more than double, which would include a lot
of the beautiful mountains that are adjacent to Pasadena.”
Schiff mentioned that, unfortunately, Pasadena knows all too well the dangers of recent gun violence in Monterey Park that rocked the nation. As a former federal prosecutor, Schiff has worked to improve public safety, promote criminal justice reform and end gun violence.
If elected, Schiff said he hopes to make California an example of democratic leadership. In the current political climate, voters are becoming more interested in issues of national importance as rights are defined on a state-by-state basis.
“California is marching on the vanguard of protecting democratic values and can provide sanctuary when it’s necessary,” he said. “Some states are taking away rights like reproductive freedom. I want to make sure people know their rights are respected here. I think both our example and sanctuary are two ways California can help with defending democracy.”
homes without living in poverty.
“I was on the picket line for the Los Angeles Unified School District to support workers, the bus drivers, nurses aides and workers that make $25,000 a year. You can’t afford to live on $25,000 a year, so I want to make sure people are paid a reasonable wage,” Schiff said.
When it comes to combating the climate crisis, climate change is real, said Schiff, and leadership needs to act now. Schiff is a proponent of the Green New Deal, a bill he was an original co-sponsor. He believes it is a bold plan for addressing climate change and will address income and wealth inequality by helping rebuild crumbling infrastructure.
“We absolutely need a much better infrastructure to deal with the water issues,” Schiff said. “All the flooding taking place (in California) is tragic because it’s costing people their lives and costing people their properties. It is also tragic because it’s washing nitrates and other chemicals into people’s drinking water.”
Schiff also aims to help Californians cope with an economy he says doesn’t work for them. She believes the COVID-19 pandemic has offered our leadership a “once in a generation” opportunity to shift the economy by investing in people, families and workers. Schiff promises to fight for corporations and billionaires to pay more taxes. With that revenue, he would invest in food programs and direct relief to end child poverty.
Right now, Schiff said he is working on legislation that would bring down the cost of child care so families can spend less of their income on that necessity. He said he wants to ensure incomes are more in line with the cost of living so children can have
Like earning a livable wage, Schiff believes health care should be a right, not a privilege. If elected, he will work to expand Medicare coverage to Americans 60 and over, lowering the age progressively as time progresses. His goal will be Medicare for all. For Schiff, it is not just about eliminating the price of health care but the moral imperative to save lives.
Schiff has been widely endorsed by local elected officials, including Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo, Alton Wang and Jim Osterling from the Pasadena City College Board of Trustees. Both the mayor and vice mayor of Burbank and Janice Hahn, the chair of the LA County Board of Supervisors, have endorsed Schiff.
“I have very good relationships with my colleagues in elected office at the federal level and the state level, as well as local councils,” Schiff said. “I have endorsements from more than 200 elected officials across California and more than half of the California Chamber Boards. I think that broad support is a result of my ability to work well with others.
“I have a track record of working with others with different viewpoints to get things on behalf of California, moving the state forward. That is what I’m offering (as a candidate for senator).”

Ex-ballplayer finds new path in fashion
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorBaseball was Jade Marlin’s life. As a child, he slept in his uniform, and after high school, he played AAA and independent ball.
However, those dreams were shattered while playing in the minor leagues when he broke his foot.
Depressed and feeling unable to play, Marlin started sketching and designing shirts.
“I had opportunities to go back and try out, but I went through so much,” he said. “I just gave it up, but I miss the game. Baseball was my passion. I was a power hitter. My batting average was .390. It was great, but fashion called my name.”
Now he helms the successful Jade Marlin Collection, which he uses to spread hope and positivity. Among his lines are Jade Marlin Collection, Lady Jade, Classic Jade and Jade Marlin Home Collection.
Besides business wear, Marlin offers beanies, hoodies, sneakers, polos and jeans. The Classic Jade Line is a high-end, limited-edition collection of luggage, leather coats, three-piece suits, ties and belts.
Featured in Costco, Walmart and Tilly’s, his collections have since been shared at New York and LA fashion weeks.
“I never thought about fashion,” he said. “Just one day, I started sketching and designing shirts. But now my heart is in fashion. I love fashion. It’s a big part of my life. It’s my world. I started with T-shirts and then went to hoodies.”
Soon, he will launch cologne and home lines at jademarlinhome.com.
“We’re launching 15 pieces, so I designed furniture and tables,” Marlin said. “We have shower curtains, too. A lot of the items are from Italy. We’ll grow every year.”
His success “surprises him,” he said.
“I thought my life would be baseball,” he described. “I went through a depression and had to go to counseling. I didn’t want to give up because baseball was my life. Fashion is my life now, but baseball is still there. They’re my passions.
“I never thought I would be where I’m at now. I always dreamed of being in the World Series and being MVP. I didn’t think I would be a rising, up-and-coming designer who travels the world. It’s a fun ride and fashion is so fun.”
Marlin longed to share his knowledge, so he founded the Pasadena-based Jade Loves Kids in 2015. He has since changed the name to the Jade Marlin Foundation.
The Jade Marlin Foundation is a nonprofit organization that has developed programs and initiatives that invest in the success and sustainability of the community.
It offers specialized hybrid classes to support the community to become self-sufficient and to help enhance their employability in the work world. Our students will be taught in a supportive, personal environment online and in-classroom environment to meet their educational and employment goals. The Jade Marlin Foundation firmly believes in our role of producing employable, dependable and trustworthy students who will lead our community.
“I changed the name because I wanted to reach out to everyone — adults, children, veterans,” he said. “We have a fashion academy, which starts on June 1. They’re free webinars from June to December. Then we have the art program for youth, which runs from May to August.”
The former Pasadena City College student’s foundation also hosts toy drives and backpack giveaways.
“Pasadena has been a blessing to the Jade Marlin Foundation,” said Marlin, who has started golfing. “We have a fashion academy and then we have an arts program and our toy drive. Every year we give out 1,000 toys as well as turkeys. We have a backpack giveaway and our charity event in September.”
Pasadena District 1 City Councilman Tyron Hampton has watched Marlin emerge as a role model. The two met when Marlin reached out to Hampton to talk about his nonprofit.
“They had a kickoff party for the organization, and I went to check out what he does,” Hampton said.
“At this party, there were directors of libraries. That was the start of our relationship. They’re going strong. He literally does love kids, and he means it.”

Molto Musica e Magia
Italy’s Ensemble Sangineto brings surprises
By Mike Nelson Pasadena Weekly Contributing WriterWhen Ensemble Sangineto, Italy’s most popular folk music group, takes the stage on Wednesday, May 3, at Pacific Harps, expect to be surprised — and delighted.
Surprised by what, Italian folk music? Isn’t that full of mandolins and accordions and people dancing the tarantella?
No, signore e signori, not when Ensemble Sangineto is making la musica. This trio from Northern Italy blends folk influences from throughout Europe — including Irish, Breton and French traditions — with classical music, early music, Celtic music, Gregorian Chant, musical theater, and modern pop and jazz influences.
The result is a highly unique sound that has captivated audiences throughout Europe. In fact, “it’s difficult to give a single meaning to the genre of the music we play,” said a smiling Adriano Sangineto, who co-founded Ensemble Sangineto with his twin sister, Caterina.
For this, the trio’s first U.S. concert tour, Ensemble Sangineto will present a “brandnew repertoire,” said Adriano, based on Italian folk songs but with the ensemble’s unique interpretation, as well as some of the ensemble’s original compositions. It will include selections from their newest collection, “Le Grand Tour Vol. 1,” conceived as a tribute to Italian traditional music with fresh interpretations of folk tunes from each of Italy’s 20 regions.
“We have prepared a musical journey throughout Italy, region by region, with stories, dialects and melodies taken from the different cultures and mores,” he said. “It shows how beautiful and powerful folk songs can be in communicating the people’s condition, their dialect and their way of living.”
Ensemble Sangineto takes these Italian folk melodies, “sometimes very simple melodies,” and incorporates its members’ extensive musical background to achieve arrangements filled with melodic contrapunto and delightful harmonies that are “far away from the most common,” Adria-
no said. “Our hope is to give beauty and surprise to the audience, in order to discover that Italy is not just made of tarantellas, mandolins and pizza, but that there are diverse traditions and tunes in our country, from north to south, which can have the same meaningful power.”
That the Sangineto siblings are making beautiful music should surprise no one, given that their father, Michele, was a noted harp maker in Monza, a city just north of Milan.
“We started breathing music since we were born,” Adriano said, noting that he and Caterina were used to artists and musicians coming to their home “to play and try harps, repair their instruments, and just
have a chat with our father.”
Adriano and Caterina also had the opportunity to play instruments built by their father and others he had collected or bought elsewhere. They attended music academies in Monza and neighboring Villasanta, then went to the Conservatoire of Milan to learn clarinet (him) and flute (her). Both also played harp and bowed a psaltery (a harp-like instrument that probably originated in the Middle East) in a
band formed by their parents, which became the first incarnation of Ensemble Sangineto.
The fact that their musical life was “our personal choice,” and the fact that Adriano and Caterina are twins, said Adriano, is part of what contributes to the “natural way” in which they approach music.
“Playing with my twin sister seems very easy because we have been sharing the same language — music, experiences, speech — since we were born, and it means that we don’t need to say 90% of what needs to be said because it is already there,” he explained. “I think you can feel our symbiosis when we sing or when we act on the stage. This is the pure result of our life spent together.”
Currently, Ensemble Sangineto consists of Adriano on lever harp, stomp box and vocals; Caterina on bowed psaltery, flutes, percussion and vocals; and Jacopo Ventura on acoustic guitars, bouzouki and vocals.
“Our aim is giving our personal contribution to the spreading of the Italian ‘taste’ all over the world, especially to those countries which are hungry for culture,” Adriano said.
Their passion for sharing culture through music is at the core of Ensemble Sangiento’s mission and its success.
“I think that music is the only ‘thing’ in between art, language and feeling,” Adriano said. “You can create beauty with harmony, melody and arrangement; you can say anything and share this language with somebody who lives on the other side of the world; you can impact somebody’s feelings, including your own.
“When you create a tune or a song, you prepare yourself to be the center of a universe full of feelings, words and beauty. That magic force will be shared by the listeners and by any other person who wants to live and discover your soul. That’s pure magic, isn’t it?”

Discover over 200 vendors at Jackalope Indie Artisan Fair
By Leah Schwartz Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterThe Jackalope Indie Artisan Fair makes it easy to shop small. The fair is back this spring, with over 200 artisan and specialty booths offering art, food, home goods, body care, accessories, jewelry, fashion and more.
The fair will be held at Central Park in Old Town Pasadena from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 29, and Sunday, April 30.
Sara Diederich and Melissa Kohout founded Jackalope in 2014 after working in the corporate art world. They shared a cubicle wall — “it just wasn’t the life for us,” Diederich said. The pair organized their first art fair in spring 2015 at Central Park and now operates in four cities across the United States: Burbank, Pasadena, Denver and Minneapolis.
The mission behind the fair was to “give a space where the community could meet
the makers behind the items and give the makers this awesome opportunity to reach
out to thousands of people and sell their items, so people could see that shopping smile could be accessible,” Kohout said.
Despite beginning with an in-person business model, Diederich and Melissa took the pandemic in stride. They used the opportunity to expand their online presence, building their social media and creating an online marketplace.
“(The online marketplace) has been a cool way to keep people connected to the handmade community, even if they’re not ready to come shop in person. It’s actually expanded our reach because we have people shopping our artists from states that we’re not in,” Diederich explained.
Supporting small businesses is at the
core of Jackalope’s business model, and many of the artisans attending the fair are local to Pasadena and Southern California. Better than most, Diederich and Kohout know the importance of small businesses, which are vital to a local economy’s health, pouring money back into their communities through paychecks and taxes.
“Supporting these artists who put so much into these creations and one-of-akind goods is so important. It just feels good when you can support somebody and shop small instead of the alternatives,” Kohout expounded.
The fair is free and welcomes families and pets alike. The community event will include kid-friendly activities, offering kids’ music sessions with local musician Ricky England, DIY watercolor painting, face painting, make-your-own slime, and other arts and crafts.
Local musicians The Simian Racket, Emily Anderson, Elmer Abapo, Turquoise Sulk, Mario Gonzalez Valdovinos and Nicole Wedel & Andy Meneses will serenade guests within the grassy central area of the park, where fairgoers can enjoy the performances and relax while having a bite to eat. Diederich advises attendees to “come hungry” and enjoy local food trucks and treats from gourmet artisan booths.
The Pasadena Unified School District is sponsoring the event, which will include a booth displaying art from Pasadena High School’s art department. Students and teachers will receive gift cards for fair discounts upon showing valid school identification.

Yeah, Peaches is pumped about Just Like Heaven
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorLast year, when singer Peaches played the Just Like Heaven festival, she hit the stage at 2 p.m. — with very few expectations.
“Then I got there and there was like 15,000 people already,” she said with a laugh. “I thought it was amazing. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is for that festival. People are going to be there for you, and it was fantastic. It felt great.”
Born Merrill Nisker in Toronto, Peaches is returning to this year’s Just Like Heaven on Saturday, May 13, also featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT, Future Islands, Empire of the Sun, M83, Hot Chip, Caribou, The Walkmen, The Bravery, Fever Ray, Azealia Banks, Ladytron, Metronomy and The Faint, among others.
“First of all, I have to say, I’m super happy that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are the headliner,” she said.
“For whatever reason, I just like that. It
really gives me a great feeling. I’m excited about so many bands — Fever Ray, Azealia Banks and Ladytron. It’s just going to be exciting. It’s funny because it’s a revival of people from the aughts. I’m sure I’m going to see so many old friends.”
Last year, she performed as part of her The Teaches of Peaches 20th Anniversary Tour. In May, she’ll sing a retrospective of songs from her catalog.
“In my mind, it has to be a full show,” she said. “It’s not just song to song. It has to have an arc — even if nobody understands that. It has to have a conceptual arc. It has to have a musical arc. It has to have a performative movement arc, a lighting arc.”
Come September, she’ll return to writing tracks for her seventh collection.
“I’m a communicator. I’m a performer,” she said about her music and show. “I want the ideas not just to be heard. I want people to feel they’re a part of them.”
Gender identity is one theme of Peaches’ music, often playing with traditional notions of gender roles representation.
Her lyrics and live shows consciously blur the distinction between male and female. Her message has been the same: allow people to be who they “need” to be.
“Why can’t we let people just be who they need to be?” she said. “Why aren’t we letting people have control over their bodies?
Why are we letting people express themselves the way they need to? Why do we have to make it about something it isn’t? Why does organized religion have any place? I’m not talking about religion. I’m not talking about spirituality. I’m talking about organized religion, which is a dangerous thing because it’s all about greed and money.
Iconic feminist singer Peaches, born Merrill Nisker in Toronto, returns to Just Like Heaven on Saturday, May 13.
“But it’s not even about a choice. That’s what people have to understand. It’s who they need to be. It freaks me out that people aren’t allowed to do that. Why are standards standards? They’re not standards. Mainstream is not the mainstream. That’s what we need to switch.”

An Unlikely Comic
Derrick C. Brown will practice his routine in Glendale
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorMultihyphenate entertainer Derrick C. Brown is revving up to record his full-length comedy album for Sub Pop.
In doing so, he’ll “practice recording his comedy record” at The Glendale Room on Saturday, April 29.
“My show is a unique comedy experience that incorporates live music, poetry, storytelling and audience interaction,” he said. “It’s a small, intimate venue. They have a ‘trust fridge.’ You drink all you want, and you pay at the end of the night with Venmo.”
Brown is a comedian, poet, novelist, librettist, screenwriter, and the founder of Write Bloody Publishing. He is the author of 10 books of poetry and tours often.
His latest book, “Love Ends in a Tandem Kayak,” was released on March 24.
Brown never imagined that writing nor comedy would be his career. Straight out of high school, he was a paratrooper for the Ar-
my’s 82nd Airborne, based at Fort Bragg.
For three years, he wrote in foxholes while he was on training missions or on guard duty.
“I couldn’t write for too long,” he said. “Everything changed when I started going to poetry shows in Long Beach. After the Army, I lived in Long Beach on a boat for a long time.
“Books got their hooks into me, and I couldn’t let go of the hunger to try and dump everything out through the power of writing. I became a writer for many years; toured as a poet opening for Rival Sons, Afghan Whigs and Cold War Kids; then I started opening for comics and there was the point when my life changed. I said to myself, ‘I’m never going in the military again. I’m going to do this art thing.’”
In 2009, David Cross asked Brown to perform at his All Tomorrow’s Parties, for which he curated the comics.
“It was like Nick Cave, Animal Collective, Flaming Lips,” he said.
“I thought, ‘I should not be here.’ David Cross told me to do what I do and mix more comedy than poetry. I did 50/50, and I knew that would be my thing. I love both art forms so much, the jamming of poetry and comedy.”
He called his comedy “surreal, fantastical and confidently stupid.” He’ll capture by recording his album on May 9 and May 10 in Boston. After his tour and recording sessions, he’ll head out on tour with actress/author Amber Tamblyn on motorcycles.
“We’re best friends. This will be our fourth tour together,” Brown said about Tamblyn, who is married to Cross.
“We’re playing a lot of theaters, art galleries and breweries. It’s set up so we don’t have longer than a seven-hour drive between venues. I’m a big motorcycle head. I love touring the U.S. via motorcycle and shipping my books to the shows.”

Spring Dine LA — which includes participants like Lucky Baldwins Pub and Agnes Restaurant and Cheesery — is from Friday, April 28, to Friday, May 12.
“Since the inception of Dine LA 15 years ago, it has been remarkable to witness the culinary scene evolve in Los Angeles, recently hallmarked by the latest Michelin and Bib Gourmand starred and recommended restaurant nominations, 26 of which are participating in Dine LA this year,” said Stacey Sun, executive director of Dine LA.
“We launched this program to support Los Angeles’ diverse and multicultural culinary landscape, and it continues to make a positive economic impact for the local restaurant industry and city at large.”
Produced by Los Angeles Tourism, Dine LA offers a unique way for Angelenos and visitors to experience the best of the city’s dining at flexible price points starting at $15 for lunch or dinner.
Los Angeles is home to over 200 Michelin Guide-recognized eateries, elevating LA neighborhoods like the Arts District, Culver City and Little Tokyo. To date, Spring Dine LA participants canvas 55
neighborhoods, 34 global cuisines and 33 Michelin-recognized restaurants. The 15th anniversary year will also include a second 15-day event, taking place in the fall.

Lucky Baldwins Pub

A British watering hole, Lucky Baldwins Pub is participating for the first time in Dine LA Restaurant Week.
For $55, it is offering, for appetizers, Buffalo cauliflower or bisque de tomate; entrées, chicken curry, cottage pie or Italian-style or Swedish meatballs; and caprese or heirloom salads. For dessert is crème brûlée and berries, or tiramisu.
The Dine LA menu reflects changes Lucky Baldwins Pub is making to its daily offerings. Afeez said Lucky Baldwins hasn’t changed its menu since it opened, so it was time for a refresh. Lucky Baldwins will keep traditional entrees like fish and chips, bangers and mash, and cottage pie.
“We’re dramatically changing the menu,” said Princeton Afeez, director of operations for the 27-year-old Lucky
Baldwins Pub.
“We’re keeping some of the old favorites, but we’re adding new items like Swedish meatballs and authentic Italian meatballs. We wanted to add more European dishes to our menu. Meatballs are very popular. A lot of places don’t really do both. We want to get away from the basic bar food.”
It is using the Old Town location to test the new dishes, as it also owns Trappiste Pub and Delirium Café.
“I’m just trying to get back to where Lucky Baldwins was before all the competition came into Old Town,” he said. “I want to offer things that nobody else has and create unique experiences for our regulars and new guests coming through the doors.”
husband, Thomas.
“We wanted to be different and highlight the cheese shop.”
Soon, it is bringing in a Sunday roast buffet.
“We are a British bar, and there are a lot of classic British things that are a big part of the culture that we’re trying to bring in,” he said. “There are a lot of British people in San Gabriel Valley. We want to offer them a piece of home.”
As for the bar side, it is looking to introduce karaoke, trivia and game nights, acoustic performers, and a party bus tour of its three locations.
Agnes Restaurant and Cheesery
40 W. Green Street, Pasadena 626-389-3839
agnesla.com
Agnes Restaurant and Cheesery is a veteran of Dine LA Restaurant Week.
It’s going to return to what it offered last year: a focus on its cheese shop.
“Everybody has the same thing: first course, second course, dessert, sandwich, chips and a drink,” said Vanessa Tilaka Kalb, who owns the restaurant with her
Agnes’ Dine LA lunch menu features, for $45, a choice of house red or house white wine or spirit-free spritz; mongers’ choice of three cheeses, served with crackers, jam, dried fruits, grapes and corn nuts; and, for dessert, a chocolate chip, snickerdoodle or peanut butter cookie.
“It got good traction last year,” she said. “We said, ‘Let’s up the ante and feature a cheese that you can only get on the plate. It won’t be in the case.’”
That cheese is King’s Ransom, by Chris Roelli from Roelli Cheese Haus; the affineur is Caroline Hess of C. Hess Cheese.
“I love Dine LA Restaurant week,” she said.
“It allows people to try something they may not have tried, or unsure about, or they know they can get a good deal. It’s just a complete meal, which is what we like to do. It’s French style and a little light snack. Maybe they’re coming by themselves, meeting somebody or catching up. It’s not a whole commitment of sitting there through a whole dinner.”
Romantic Revival
Veronique Bridal creates dream dresses, memories
By Summer Aguirre Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterIt is every bride’s wish to find the perfect dress for her special day, and a Pasadena bridal shop is dedicated to making this dream come true.
Veronique Bridal and Gowns — located in the historic Shops on Holly building in Pasadena — carries a curated collection of wedding dresses and offers custom-made gowns. The boutique is a husband-andwife business, with designer Veronica Koch behind the bridal wear and Jens Koch in charge of the business matters.
The couple — who also own a fashion design and production consultation firm in Signal Hill called Koch Clothing Company — opened Veronique Bridal and Gowns in February, once in-person weddings experienced a revival after the pandemic.
“We felt it was the right time to jump back in (to weddings), since we were able to survive by pivoting into other parts of the garment industry,” Veronica said. “I just really love it — I’m known for it and I get a lot of referrals. So it was just an area of our business that was always just a staple.”
While most of her clients come from Santa Monica, West LA or Orange County, the designer receives brides from the Inland Empire, as far as Rancho Cucamonga or Ontario. She was working with at least 10 to 12 brides a week at the clothing company before the pandemic.
Veronica, who describes herself as a “hopeless romantic,” is thrilled that weddings and other celebrations are coming back and wants to make the experience of finding a dress memorable for brides who seek her help.
“I think it’s such an important gown in a woman’s time of life,” she said. “To me, it’s capturing their personality at that time. That becomes timeless and classic to them. It becomes this piece of artwork for them.”
The dress collection
The boutique carries its own Veronique collection (Veronica’s “French alter ego”), which features bridal dresses in a variety of elegant, timeless styles and fabrics, as well as Luna Novias brand gowns.
Whether the bride is searching for a tra-
ditional, romantic ball gown or a sleek, form-fitting silhouette, there is something to suit every taste.
Veronica said her personal style has “always been vintage Hollywood glamour.” But, since weddings have become more intimate with the times, the dresses she has been designing reflect modern lifestyles.
Veronica’s 2023 bridal collection, her newest creation, reflects her style evolution. Inspired by vintage glamour, it leans into the 1980s puffy sleeve trend with a more modern, sleek line, incorporating charmeuse silks and other fabrics with a shine.
“With this collection, we’re doing a lot more unique pieces. One, adding color and, two, making them very customized for more intimate weddings, not such big weddings,” she said. “So, the lines are a lot sleeker, cut on the bias. Girls like to be a lot more revealing and daring with cutouts.”
She described it as “taking little bits from the past,” as “fashion always repeats itself, but adding new details.”
For the most part, however, brides come in seeking custom Veronique dresses.
“It’s really creating a vision of their personalities that they haven’t been able to find in other stores,” Veronica said. “Whether that’s color or fit, or they want the top of one dress and the bottom of another, and they just haven’t found it.”
After a consultation appointment, Veronica works with brides throughout an extensive development process to bring their unique dress to life.
It typically takes her four months to turn around a custom dress, but she can shave that timeframe down to eight weeks if necessary.
She tries to keep prices affordable for all brides, whether they are purchasing a gown from a collection or commissioning a custom-made dress.
Collection designs begin at $1,600 and typically don’t go above $3,000. While it depends on the fabric and sewing techniques involved, a custom dress can range from $2,200 to around $6,000.
In addition to bridal wear, Veronica offers other formal and costume gowns, as well as alterations and fashion illustration artwork.
An intimate experience
When one walks into Veronique, they are met with a sunny interior bordered by brick walls, minimalistic furnishings and racks of radiant wedding dresses ready to be tried on.
The boutique’s sitting room, flooded with natural light from tall windows, is spacious enough for the bride to bring five to six guests to watch her find the dress of her dreams.
Parties can even pop a bottle of complimentary champagne to celebrate the big day.
“It’s that luxury bridal suite experience that I want them to have, where they can come and bring the mother of the bride, the future mother-in-law, their girlfriends,” Veronica said. “I think that’s really important for the experience, especially after what we went through during the pandemic where only the bride could come.”
The pandemic, according to Veronica, has also led people to become more accustomed to online shopping. Her goal is to bring back opportunities for human interaction in the wedding gown shopping experience that have been lost in recent years.
“I think (what sets us apart is the) unique experience that we’re able to give them. Really listening to what they want and taking that special time to enjoy the process of it,” she said.
The boutique’s location on Holly Street completes the overall dress shopping experience.
Veronica describes it as a great walking area with plenty of restaurants to get lunch with family and friends after a dress appointment. Jenette Bras is next door to Ve-
ronique, so brides wanting a custom-fit bra can easily pop in after visiting the boutique.
“I’m really happy and grateful my husband and I found the place, because we were looking for over a year to find the right spot,” she said. “We were looking at Green (Street), we were looking at Colorado (Boulevard), and then we found this spot and I fell in love with it.”
Although the boutique opened just a few months ago, Veronica’s experience in the bridal and gowns fashion industry began in the early 1990s. She studied fashion design at Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, where she experimented with wedding gowns, evening gowns and costuming.
Veronica began creating her first wedding gowns in 1995, a year after she graduated from college. In the early 2000s, she started designing dresses and gowns under the name Veronique Bridal and Gowns.
“It’s been a long time (since I started) creating custom dresses. I’ve helped many brides find their custom dress,” she said. “Like I said, I’m a hopeless romantic, I find much pleasure in the work. So therefore it isn’t so much work.”

Guests will enjoy a cocktail reception, a documentary screening of the soon-tobe-released fi lm “Drowning in Silence,” and a short program that includes a special discussion with director Chezik Tsunoda.
The evening will highlight the RBAC’s Water Safety Program, its partnership with PUSD now in its fourth decade.
“Our organization is committed to making sure everyone has the opportunity to
learn how to swim and understand water safety,” said Jimmy Francis, Rose Bowl Aquatics Center executive director.
“By providing these resources to families in our community, we can reduce the number of preventable drowning incidents.”
Net proceeds from Water Safety for All will directly support the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center’s water safety initiatives that impact the lives of over 400,000 local residents each year.
The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center provides water safety, learn-to-swim programs and Red Cross Lifeguard training with a mission-minded, community benefit-centered approach for all ages.

5, and it is preventable. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of 10 people die from drowning every day in the United States, and 1 in 5 are children aged 14 or younger.
“We are grateful for the support of our board of directors, donors and patrons in our efforts around drowning prevention,”

Paper helps PUSD pupils reach new academic heights
By Leah Schwartz Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterWith the advent of Paper, an online educational support platform designed to give students 24/7 tutoring and support, Pasadena Unified School District students are achieving marked academic growth.
A recent study measuring the academic growth of PUSD students found that those who utilized Paper experienced significant academic progress compared to those who did not. The study compared Paper usage data to i-Ready assessments, administered three times a year, measuring progress in reading and math.
“We had about 60% growth toward their goals in students who did not use Paper, versus 71% growth in students who did use Paper,” said Ani Aharonian, senior research analyst at PUSD.
Before starting the company nine years ago, CEO Philip Cutler was a teacher and noticed the disparity between students who could afford tutoring and extra support and those who could not. “It felt highly inequitable. I started to realize this wasn’t just a problem in my classroom,” Cutler said.
Creating an equitable learning environment and support network with programs like Paper is especially vital in school districts like PUSD, where 57.6% of students are economically disadvantaged, with more than 80% identifying as minorities.
The platform is widely used in school districts across the United States and Canada, with more than 3 million users nationwide, to help students reach their academic potential.
Contained across a single online program, Paper provides one-on-one virtual tutoring — for any subject at any time; feedback on written work, including lab reports, essays, resumes and college applications; and engaging educational videos along with video game-style math challenges.
Ultimately, Paper strives to contextualize learning for students, demonstrating how classes and ideas translate into potential careers and real-world applications.
“The mission behind (Paper) has always been about preparing students for life after graduation and making sure that they have the resources to be the best version of
A recent study found that PUSD students who used Paper, an educational support system, experienced 11% more growth toward their academic goals than those who did not.
themselves and successful in whatever they choose to do with their lives,” Cutler said. “The No. 1 motivator for students, particularly high school students, is connecting their courses to careers and job opportunities down the line.”
Cutler pointed toward PUSD students’ high levels of engagement with the platform as a factor in their success. Indeed, during the past year alone, students using Paper have engaged in 18,060 learning activities and submitted 6,651 written drafts for review, seeking the most help in algebra, arithmetic and essay writing.
“Paper’s 24/7 availability was key because you never know when a kid is going to suddenly decide they want to do their work or when they’re going to hit a roadblock and need guidance,” explained Helen Hill, assistant superintendent of educational services at PUSD. “With Paper, the students are in control, and at the end of the day, we want them to understand their power and have more agency in their learning.”
Teachers and school administrators are seeing the study’s findings play out in real time, witnessing the platform’s effects on students’ academic performances. “Teachers from grades three on up say they are seeing better writing from their students,” said Dr. Nadirah Nayo, curriculum, instruction and professional development coordinator, PUSD. “And it’s not just in terms of grammar and punctuation, but also the development of their ideas. This is
thanks to the tutors’ questions and the feedback they provide.”
Resting on a sturdy foundation of data and firsthand observations, Paper is undoubtedly here to stay. “We really appreciate the partnership,” Hill said. “We feel Paper is just as invested in our kids’ success as we are, and that’s rare.”
Our practice provides our patients the best possible vision and eye care in a comfortable, friendly, and compassionate environment. We believe there’s more to vision than seeing 20/20 but having clear, comfortable, and healthy vision to live your life to the fullest!
