Measure H will remain for Pasadena renters By Morgan Owen Pasadena Weekly Staff Writer

A

judge has ruled against a lawsuit filed by the California Apartment Association (CAA), which sought to invalidate Measure H by claiming the ballot measure violated California law by fundamentally changing Pasadena’s city charter rather than amending it. “On a quantitative and qualitative basis, Measure H does not fundamentally alter the Pasadena City Charter or the basic structure of city government in Pasadena. The court concludes that Measure H is an amendment to the charter and that enactment of Measure H by initiative did not violate … the California Constitution,” Judge Mary Strobel said in defense of the measure.

Last November, Measure H passed with 52% of the vote. Along with creating rent control restrictions and requiring landlords to offer relocation assistance, the action requires the city of Pasadena to create an independent rental housing board to address rent control issues and landlord disputes. Although CAA took issue with nearly every aspect of Measure H in their lawsuit, the crux of their argument was that by creating a rental housing board, Measure H would fundamentally change Pasadena’s city charter. Strobel noted in her ruling that voters rationally concluded landlords are overrepresented in the Pasadena city government and that they found it necessary to enshrine limitations in their representation through Measure H.

“It’s a huge relief to have this behind us,” Affordable Pasadena board member Liberty McCoy said. “Many landlords claimed, wrongly, that because of the lawsuit, Article XVIII (Measure H) was not in effect. Many tenants were too scared to force the issue. I respond to tenant inquiries at the Pasadena Tenants Union, and they have questions all the time about the status of the lawsuit; they were very scared!” Contrary to the fears McCoy described, Measure H has been effective in Pasadena since Dec. 22. CAA did attempt to issue an injunction on the measure to delay its implementation as part of the lawsuit but was denied upon request. Now that the lawsuit against Measure H has been dismissed, the appointment of the Pasadena Rental Housing Board will

move forward without delay. Applications for the board have been open since Jan. 23. As of the beginning of April, no deadline had yet been set for applications. Applications can be obtained by contacting the Pasadena City Clerk’s Office. Candidacy requirements include demonstrating proof of residency in a city council district, proof of tenancy, and proof the candidate does not have a material interest in a rental property. Pasadena Weight Loss Center personalizes programs

P

asadena Weight Loss founder Dr. Claude Matar noticed 20 years ago that many of his new patients were retirees who were not in optimum health. “They couldn’t enjoy the fruits of their hard work,” he said. “I realized I needed to have a specialized program that took care of that group.” Over time, he finalized Fit50, a coaching program that includes dietary lifestyle changes, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management and positive social connection. Consultations are free. “We have a very beautiful program that helped people address/prevent chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, arthritis and things of that nature. “They could, at one point, control or reverse these conditions completely and either reduce or eliminate some or all of the medications they were on.” Fit50 isn’t a cookie-cutter program. The staff sits down with individuals to understand their situation and create a baseline program for them. “The way we help people is to create a lifestyle that’s individualized for each person,” he said. “It’s based on their likes and dislikes and needs and wants.” Changes are made over time, so it’s not intimidating. It stays the same until lifestyle modifications stabilize and become a routine. “Then, we decide together as to what the next routine is that we need to tackle, which could be extremely small,” he said. “We’re not looking for speed of change. We’re looking for consistent improvement — even if it’s slow.” In Fit50, clients are learning skills necessary for health, wellness, fitness and longevity. He said not only are they learning these skills, but they’re applying these into an actual routine that’s effortless. At one point, it becomes a part of their lives, he added. “This is the exact purpose of our coaching program,” Matar said. “Three decades of coaching taught us that it’s only through routines that are consistently practiced in your life will you get

consistent results. … The way the practice of medicine is structured, there’s no room or priority for effectively educating the patient. “The doctor doesn’t have time to sit down and educate you. There’s no single person whose job is to educate patients, take the doctor’s instructions, then sit down and help the patients develop routines. This job doesn’t exist. This is a huge missing piece in the practice of medicine. You need to coach the patient.” Just telling patient to exercise more or eat or sleep better doesn’t work, he added. Patients need one single, actionable piece of instruction about a single lifestyle change and make sure they’re doing it. Daily life obstacles need to be assessed and removed to change existing routines. “It’s only then that you know the doctor’s orders are being carried out in a fashion that prevents disease and disability and produces long-term results,” he said. Pasadena Weight Loss Center is not a replacement for your doctor. Instead, it acts as a lifestyle missing link between the patient and the patient’s primary care physician. “We evaluate and we keep very close relationships with primary care physicians and send reports directly to the patient’s chart at the primary care physician’s office. Patients may need to be seen by their doctors more often due to the positive changes they are making so that medications could be reduced, changed or eliminated.” Pasadena Weight Loss center houses a gym with exercise therapists, who have experience in delivering the method of exercise that proved to be the best way for aging people. The exercise sessions are short, no more than 30 minutes, and then the patient moves on to exercise recovery. That includes deep massage, assisted by devices the exercise therapists use to enhance circulation, detoxify and remove lactic acid. “Recovery is faster,” Matar said. “Following the exercise, there’s assisted stretching. We apply certain techniques of stretching that allow these muscles to relax a little, so the joints controlled by muscles have a wider range of motion. “That reduces stiffness that develops as we age, allows for better form and helps

Dr. Claude Matar founded Pasadena Weight Loss and the personlized Fit50 program to help retirees improve their fitness so that they could better enjoy an active retirement. prevent falls. Falling, for someone who’s older, could be a devastating event. It could end their life.” Pasadena Weight Loss’ staff trains their patients on functional movements, which are necessary in day-to-day life like lifting and squatting. “We do a thorough analysis of how the patient performs basic movements/functions,” he said. “We create a functional training program to help each muscle group become stronger and the joints more limber.” Matar said many problems start with posture, so he evaluates that. Posture analyses on those who are older than 50 have shown that heads place such a heavy weight on the neck and shoulders due to misalignment, he said. So, instead of weighing 10 pounds when they are normally aligned, they can pull the neck and shoulder muscle to the “tune of 20 or 25 pounds when they are misaligned.” “We work on the soft tissues of the neck and shoulders to reduce the pressure down to a normal weight,” he said. The Pasadena Weight Loss staff also coaches on nutrition, hydration, sleep, stress reduction — whatever is needed to help create routines that are “unshakable, like brushing your teeth.” “We work on all of those elements, and

people just love that. They love it,” he said. “Rarely will you find all of these services offered to the patient under one roof. Everything we do is explained in writing. This is how we get compliance from the patient. Understanding is the first step toward compliance. We learned this from our patients a long time ago.” The practice is not contracted with insurance, but it offers its own financing system that opens the door for many to join. Memberships start at $299 per month, and packages could be financed to cost $59 per month. The service begins immediately. Matar said he’s had great success with his patients. He chalks it up to education and personalization. “When offering a piece of advice on a lifestyle change, we mold it and we remold it with the patient until it’s perfect for the individual,” he said. “We monitor its application until it becomes an near-effortless routine.” Pasadena Weight Loss Center 600 S. Easing the Suffering Bloom Again provides funds to women in need

or those already struggling to make ends meet, a sudden health setback can be devasting. For the past 15 years, Pasadena nonprofit Bloom Again has provided direct and immediate funds to economically vulnerable working women experiencing medical challenges. This March, the organization welcomed its new board of directors, a volunteer group of women from diverse backgrounds, with co-Presidents Rosetta Henderson and Carolyn Sims heading the board. Henderson serves as the community outreach project manager for Southern California Edison, where Sims also works as a senior manager. This is Sims’ first year serving as co-president. “After serving on the board of directors for 10 years, I am grateful to now serve in the capacity of co-president,” Sims said. “Bloom Again Foundation has always been near and dear to my heart because of our mission. The support we receive from our donors, partnerships and fundraising events provides the support to make an impact in the lives of these women when they need it the most.” Bloom Again was founded by Dr. Lois Frankle, bestselling author and president of Corporate Coaching International, in 2008 after her breast cancer diagnosis. “When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I realized I was the luckiest woman alive. No, I didn’t think I was lucky because I had cancer, but rather because I had all the resources necessary to beat it,” Frankel said. “My thoughts soon turned to the millions of women who can’t afford the luxury of a day off from work. That’s why I vowed to help these women get back on their feet once I was back on mine. Together we are the bridge between health and hope.” Similarly, after Henderson watched her sister succumb to lung cancer, she realized there were other women like her sister who needed her help. “This is my life’s work. … When they asked me to be the co-president, I stepped up and said, ‘Out of all the things I can do, this is the least of them, to help somebody

else, help fundraise and help these women when they’re down and out, to provide that hope and faith they need to help them heal.’” Last year, the organization assisted 17 women, each receiving an average of $3,498 in rapid assistance for essential living expenses like rent and groceries. Many of the women Bloom Again assists work in the service industry on low incomes, often with no paid time off. Some are heads of households, with dependents, relying on a single income. When unexpected health problems put them out of work, at-risk women might risk homelessness and other added stressors. Henderson explained that the rapid relief funds are essential to help them “concentrate on healing.” “How can you heal when you’re worried about whether you’ll have somewhere to live because you have to pay rent? Or how you’re going to get your transportation or your groceries?” she added. Once vetted, the women receive the funds within 72 hours. Bloom Again often sends the money directly to landlords for those women facing eviction. This year, Bloom Again was awarded a grant from The California Endowment, which will be used to produce educational materials about early breast cancer detection aimed at the Latina and African American communities. With breast cancer, early detection is critical; the survival rate for localized breast cancer is 99%. “This grant will let Bloom Again Foundation educate and inform women of color about free funding that can provide them with financial relief in their time of healing,” Henderson said. She added that supporting women with financial aid is “essential in each woman’s self-care by allowing them to be free of anxiety over the potential loss of shelter.” The organization is fully funded through donations raised by independent donors and fundraisers. Bloom Again’s upcoming event, “Broadway Bound,” produced in collaboration with Theatre Americana, will feature musical performances from Motown to country. The shows are Friday, April 28, and Saturday, April 29, and all proceeds will go directly to Bloom Again.

Going for Broke

Being healthy is important to Janice Dangerfield

R

etirees’ lives change after they leave their jobs. For Janice Dangerfield, the transformation has been remarkable. After working as a financial manager for the LA County Sheriff’s Department, she has gone from a tired, sedentary size 14 to a svelte, happy and active retiree. She credits the Pasadena Senior Center’s exercise program for much of the change. “Those classes changed my life,” Dangerfield said. “The three classes that I initially started with opened my eyes to what I could be and made me not be afraid of being that person.”

Near-fatal car crash

Chris Mortenson/Staff

Dangerfield thanks God every morning that she and her husband, Joseph, wake up feeling as well as they do. It wasn’t always that way. In 1992, Dangerfield was in a near-fatal car crash. She suffered broken ribs, a concussion and a fractured skull. Her knee was reconstructed. “It was a terrible, terrible accident,”

After a near-fatal car crash, Janice Dangerfield decided to change her life and adopt a new exercise regimen.

Dangerfield said. “I was incapacitated for months. That was miserable.” When she returned to work, she wasn’t active, and her position was stressful. “Some nights I would be at work until 10 or 11 at night, especially around budget time,” she said. “Between the stress and the sitting, I gained weight and I had never been heavy. I had never been tiny, but I’d never been heavy. Most of my life I was between an 8 and a 10. “Somewhere around 1992, after I had my car crash, that started it,” she said. “I wasn’t very active, and then I had to learn how to walk with this new knee. My exercise regimen tanked. I was going through menopause. That was new. There were things going on. I looked up one day and I was a size 14. I thought, ‘Wait a minute. What happened here?’” Dangerfield, however, felt comfortable. It didn’t bother her the way it should have, she explained. In early 2000, she started feeling the effects of being overweight and went on a mission to lose weight. “That’s especially because my doctor sent me a letter with my name and ‘obese’ in the same sentence,” she shared. “I said, ‘Nope, nope, nope. I’m not having any of this.’ I took two weeks off of work. I started walking, and I walked until I was tired and then I walked home. I started doing that every day, a couple times a day sometimes. I could actually feel things were getting better. My clothes were not as tight. That was my initial weight loss.” Her husband retired in 2009, and they continued to walk. Dangerfield joined a gym and, when she retired in 2010, that’s when she joined the senior center. By then, she had lost a considerable amount of weight and returned to a size 10. That was a good start, she said, but she wanted to be in better shape. The Boyle Heights native signed up for Pilates, yoga and Zumba. “I was going for broke,” she said. It was a struggle, but it became easier. “I went back for a third week, and it felt like a totally different class,” Dangerfield said. “I felt empowered, that this is something I can sink my teeth into.” She had a similar experience with yoga. At first it seemed her over-60 body wasn’t ready for the routine. But she kept going back and realized, “It’s not beyond what your body can do even at a senior’s age.” Dangerfield loved the Zumba class immediately. She enjoys dancing, so moving to the music in Zumba was right up her alley. Now Dangerfield also takes the “Pep Up Your Life” class that includes balance train-

Dangerfield attended classes five days a week but, after the pandemic, cut it down to three.

“When the pandemic hit, that changed the dynamic,” she said. “We had classes on Zoom, which are just not the same. I had to rely on what I knew to workout at home. I was so happy when the center opened again. The combination of the classes, the staff and the camaraderie with the people taking classes, it was a recipe for staying healthy. I love it.”

She’s not only an actress, but she’s a singer, she’s a songwriter, and she’s also a teaching artist working in arts education. “I knew it would be really amazing to work with her and to bring her talents to the table, especially since we added the musical aspects to the piece. She’s a beautiful singer, and it really elevates the piece to have her sing live.” After each show, About Productions invites students from LA public high schools to the stage as part of an ongoing monologue program. The students are encouraged to explore their own self-identity and ancestral history. “We had 100-plus public high school students in the theater yesterday,” Chavez said. “What students are being taught now, they’re still not getting the full picture. That’s also why, when you come to the theater, … you don’t get a program, you get a history guide. There’s a QR code that takes

you to the program, but the history guide gives you a snapshot of the various historical themes that are in the piece. “It’s important to make an effort to convey that and to get students interested and open their eyes to the reality of where they live.” Chavez stressed that education remains important for audiences of all ages, as many people may not take the time to dig deeper into their history. “I hope when they walk out of the theater, that they see the landscape in a brand-new way, that they imagine it in a brand-new way, that when they’re walking down Sunset Boulevard or driving down Wilshire Boulevard, that they see that these streets were originally Indigenous footpaths, and that they became borders to the Ranchos and then they became our streets,” Chavez said. “It’s also for everyone to tap into their own ancestral histories as well. How do you remember those histories and how do you honor your ancestors? And not necessarily, ‘Oh, I just know my family tree,’ which is the beginning of many of our journeys in that way. But also, is there something more visceral that you can connect to and make your ancestors present? The piece is also about that for the character.”

asadena nonprofit Armory Center for the Arts has nurtured the San Gabriel Valley’s visual artist community for over three decades through contemporary art exhibitions, community-based education programs and its biennial auction and gala, which returns on Saturday, April 8. “It’s a way for us to connect with our community of artists,” said Andrew Gould, vice president of external relations. Armory’s “Off the Wall” Art Auction will be held at the organization’s Old Pasadena campus. The event will have open bars with wines; cocktails; gourmet street food from local food trucks; and live entertainment by LA-based singer San Cha and KCRW DJ Ro “Wyldeflower” Contreras, who is an alumni of Armory’s arts education classes. The gala’s online silent auction will feature over 60 contemporary artworks from renowned Southern California artists, including Edgar Arceneaux, Phung Huynh, Nery Gabriel Lemus, Ana Rodriguez and Barbara T. Smith. There will also be work from 12 of Armory’s teaching artists, who lead classes for children, teens and adults to learn new skills and hone their talent in year-round art classes. “The Armory has always been an artist-centered organization,” Gould said. “We always ensure that we offer a percentage of any proceeds are made on sales of auction works back to artists as well to make sure that we are in the spirit of collaboration and partnership and support of contemporary artists.” The works will be installed in the Ar-

mory’s Mezzanine Gallery for guests to experience in person, displayed alongside QR codes for bidding access through Artsy.net. Online bidding runs through noon Tuesday, April 11. “The event is our largest fundraiser of the year,” Gould said. “All funds go towards supporting our arts education and exhibition programs, … anything from art-making supplies for all of our community programs and classes that we do through to helping provide funding for our teaching artists in K through sixth grade classrooms, primarily in Pasadena Unified School District, through to helping fund our exhibition-related public programs and panel discussions through to providing transportation passes for our teen scholars. “It is a really critical event for us and provides us with additional funds to make sure that all of our programs are fueled. And I think that this is especially important in light of some of the losses that we’ve experienced due to the pandemic.” Gould said that his hope for the future is that the “Off the Wall” Art Auction will further support Armory’s mission to advance equity and social justice for local creatives, especially young or up-and-coming artists. “We’re out and about in the community at public libraries, at parks and rec centers, at community centers, presenting art in the community,” Gould said. “We, as an organization, are very committed to cultural equity and inclusion, so making sure that our constituents are freely able to access arts education opportunities and experiences. “We want to redouble our focus on serving the San Gabriel Valley communities … and also providing support to the community of contemporary artists within the San Gabriel Valley, making sure that arts experiences are accessible for all.”

Los Angeles Visual Arts Coalition funds reach $2.66M

T

he Los Angeles Visual Arts (LAVA) Coalition has $2.66 million following catalyzing grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Teiger Foundation. The coalition serves 34 neighborhoods across the city by representing 33 contemporary visual arts organizations, including San Gabriel Valley destinations like Fulcrum Arts, Side Street Projects and Armory Center for the Arts. LAVA will now provide each member organization with $50,000 in unrestricted funds to support general operations, giving executive directors the freedom to determine how best to use the funds. The coalition will then issue a report to funders on the specific ways each organization used the deposits to expand their work and impact. “It cannot be underestimated how impactful this coalition is, not only for the immediate partner organizations but also for the larger cultural landscape of Los Angeles,” said Yoon

Ju Ellie Lee, executive director at GYOPO, who is using the deposits to fund full-time positions, a first for the organization. “Small groups like ours struggle with the ability to employ staff due to the scarcity of funding opportunities for core operating support and unrestricted investment to grow and scale. LAVA’s trust in coalition members is trust in the potential of our evolving cultural landscape.” LAVA was founded in 2020 to restructure the city’s ecosystem of artists, institutions and philanthropy by building a fundraising model that distributes resources across a collective. In 2022, the coalition’s membership body presented over 100 exhibitions and 1,240 public programs and welcomed over 350,000 visitors. “What began as casual conversations during an unprecedented moment has transformed into a sustainable, scalable and nourishing coalition of mutual support and care,” said Anne Ellegood, executive director at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. “This is an opportunity for our entire chain, from arts workers to philanthropists, to redefine how we think about

We are arguing for the value of all our organizations with the belief that there is ample capacity among a range of advocates and patrons to enable all of us to thrive. With LAVA, we are offering funders an unprecedented opportunity to work with us to create a new model and make their impact felt across Los Angeles, impacting diverse communities that truly represent the demographics of the county.” Alongside the Andrew W. through an uncertain economic environment, LAVA’s mutually supportive ecosystem stands as a financial safeguard helping to ensure the health of the city’s visual arts sector. “At the heart of LAVA is the shared feeling that by elevating the value of mutual aid and deep collaboration, we can work together to create a transformative, radically transparent and intergenerational economic model that benefits us all,” said Laura Hyatt, executive director at Los Angeles Nomadic Division. “It really shifts the thinking away from organizations as competitive entities and supports efforts to change the field.” In the past two years, the number of public program collaborations and cross-pollination of audiences among LAVA organizations has more than tripled. The coalition has also engaged in dialogues with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Arts for LA, and Contemporary Art League to learn more about the contemporary art environment in LA County and build equity. LAVA’s goal for the future is to provide health insurance to all 180 full-time and part-time employees working for the 33 member organizations by the end of 2023. “We are proud to support a group that took matters into their own hands and saw how together was better for tackling the issues — exacerbated by but definitely predating COVID — shared by practically all small visual art nonprofits,” said Larissa Harris, executive director at the Teiger Foundation. “May the LAVA model spread far and wide.”

Need for leader on Dodgers and LA community is Taylor made

F

or Chris Taylor, the 2023 baseball season is familiar and foreign. Now in his seventh full season and eighth overall with the Dodgers, Taylor has earned the veteran status that comes with the experience he has garnered. This season he is expected to play in his 1,000th career game. He owns a World Series ring, has been an All-Star, and was the Most Valuable Player of the National league Championship Series. It’s a far cry from his earlier days in Major League Baseball when he struggled and was shipped to Los Angeles in a trade that didn’t make major headlines. But in the time since he first donned Dodger Blue, he has established a whole new identity in a new city. He’s married, and he calls LA home year-round. “It was a busy offseason for us,” Taylor said. “We got married in December. We traveled more than usual. We now live in Manhattan Beach full time.” He also recently held his first charity event in the area, with his CT3 Foundation delivering on its promise to help kids with cancer. “A few years ago, a group of my closest childhood friends from Virginia Beach flew out to Houston to watch me play in the 2017 World Series against the Astros,” Taylor wrote on his foundation’s website. “One of those friends was Kyle Profilet. I didn’t know it yet, but Kyle had recently been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, better known as sarcoma, a bone cancer in his right leg. He said he didn’t want to tell me about it while I was playing in the postseason. Kyle never wanted anyone’s sympathy. “Throughout his two-and-a-half-year battle, he repeatedly spared me and our friends the constant exacerbating news from the doctors. News that the chemo treatments were not working. News that he was going to lose his right leg. News that the cancer had spread to his lungs and then to his brain. Despite it all, Kyle never lost hope. He was the toughest guy I’ve ever known, and he fought till the very end.” At the start of the new year, Taylor hosted the Driving for Hope charity tournament. The event in El Segundo featured a special evening of golf, food and drinks with an array of Dodg-

er teammates and celebrity friends. The goal, according to Taylor, was simple: raise a lot of money for his foundation and for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to help support children battling cancer and other life-altering conditions. “Five years ago, I had never heard of sarcoma. Now, it has affected my life on many different levels,” he described. “Last year, I had to watch my girlfriend get the same phone call I had received just a year earlier. I knew right away. Mary’s childhood friend, Brian, had also lost his fight with sarcoma. As she was sobbing in my arms, I couldn’t fathom how this seemingly rare disease constantly kept crawling back into my life. “My neighbor and friend Dalton Fox recently served as an inspiration in his own right as he battled Ewing sarcoma. Dalton lived on the same street as my parents and, like Kyle, also lost his leg in his fight. My parents would always see Dalton riding his arm bike in the neighborhood wearing his Dodgers gear with a big smile on his face. Even though we lost Kyle, Dalton and many others, there are still so many kids that can be saved from this devastating disease. Maybe it’s not sarcoma, but some form of cancer has had an impact on all of us. I’m determined to not let anyone else go through this fight alone. Together, we can save lives.” For Taylor, the event was not his first work of this kind. He had hosted his first two golf events in his hometown of Virginia Beach. This one, however, was extra special due to its location. “I was excited that we could finally do something here with all the Dodger fans that taps into this market,” Taylor said. “I have known we wanted to do something here in LA for a little while. It’s just a matter getting our feet under us and figuring out specifically what we wanted to do. We had worked a little with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles with a virtual visit last winter. I just really, really like what they do.” The fact that Taylor is a star athlete in LA is a bigger surprise than his great work in any community he calls home. As a young pro, despite winning several awards in the minor leagues, he hit just .240 during his time with Seattle over parts of three seasons. In 2016 he was traded to the Dodgers. Upon joining LA, he was sent to the minors three days later. But he persevered with the organization and ultimately proved to be a revelation. Commanding the spotlight, Tay-

A staple in the Dodgers lineup, Chris Taylor uses his popularity as a baseball player to help drive awareness to a disease that has tremendously impacted several of those close to him and his wife. lor has played in as many as 155 games in a season and hit 20 homers in a year. In the field, “Have Glove, Will Travel.” Mostly seeing time in left field last season, Taylor’s versatility is another great plus, as he played in six spots in 2022 alone. Additionally, the team has made the playoffs each year during his tenure, though it is also a club in transition, as familiar names like Justin Turner and Cody Bellinger left over the winter. “We obviously are going to miss those guys,” he said. “Sad to see those guys go on not only like my teammates but my really close friends. I wish them nothing but the best. That’s the nature of the business. “I also believe he have some really talented young players and it’s their opportunity now and long overdue. They’ve been having a lot of success in the minor leagues, and some of them already at the big league level. I think they’re due for their shot.” Does the 32-year-old Taylor, who took full advantage of his opportunity in LA, feel

like his place on the team can help fill a leadership void? “I feel a little more like established and will maybe take on a little bit more of a veteran presence just because I’ve been here longer than other guys,” Taylor said. “But I really don’t think of myself as like a vet player or anything like that. I don’t like to think of myself as like somebody on the back end of their career, you know?” Taylor is clearly not on the back end of his baseball career. And despite hosting a number of charity golf events in recent years, do not spend a lot of time looking for him on the back nine at a golf course here in his adopted hometown. “I actually don’t golf,” he said. “I go for fun with like my teammates or friends just to have a good time, but I do not have the time to offer as much as I would like. It’s a full-day affair, and maybe I will try more once I retire.” For more information on Taylor and his CT3 Foundation, visit ct3foundation.org. 04.06.23 | PASADENA WEEKLY 13

Pasadena Unified middle school named after Octavia E. Butler followed in her footsteps by transporting visitors to a “world that makes more sense than this one” at the annual science-fiction fair. The Octavia E. Butler Magnet Library Science Fiction Festival included telescopes, astrophysicists, time machines, fantasy fiction, flower pounding, robotics, sculptures, artwork, essays, book giveaways and all-things sci-fi. Organizers said the event is a celebration of science fiction and a way to honor the school’s namesake, the renowned author who started writing science fiction when she was a student at the school, then known as Washington Junior High. “We are trying to expose our kids to the

ways that fiction and art and creativity go hand in hand with science. Speculative science spurs on real science; real science inspires writers to create stories that we all enjoy,” said Natalie Daily, organizer/OEB librarian. “I’m so impressed with our students’ work this year. We have several students doing graphic fiction, which takes a lot of talent because it’s visually telling the story and using words.” All students were asked to create a piece of science fiction (a story, poem or work of art) but not required to enter it in the competition. Kids could also complete three missions at the event to win a swag bag and pick out a free book. “I think this science fiction festival is amazing,” said Brooklyn Roffman, a seventh grader. “I love science fiction.
