A Pretty Story Gone Wrong
Sometimes employment is only skin deep
By Ellen Snortland Pasadena Weekly Contributing WriterI’ve been reflecting on monolithing: the human tendency to think that all people within one group should think or act alike.
Dominant groups can mostly avoid this (e.g., very few people think that all straight white men are all alike). However, as a member of the cis straight white older woman group, I often hear people say things to me like, “I didn’t know women like you could swear like a sailor.” Some of us do, some of us don’t. Another invisible rule: You don’t snitch on other people in your nondominant group. Snitching on other women — or anyone else in a group one identifies with — is verboten when one is in the middle of a significant social revolution. However, because June is dedicated to LGBTQIA+ awareness, the following anecdote is a little “snitchy.”
I am and have always been an ally for the LGBTQIA+ family. That said, this story illustrates that no matter what group one identifies with, we are all fundamentally people and fallibly human.
As a newly minted California lawyer, I was married to a bright, upand-coming studio engineer who worked at Cherokee Studios with some of the biggest acts at the time. Walking into Cherokee, I was likely to meet Ringo, Harry Nilsson, Skunk Baxter or John Mellencamp.
I had responded to a Daily Journal ad for an executive position at a nonprofit where the mission was to get violent images of women off of album covers. At the time, cruel album covers were rampant. If the graphic designers had used any other marginalized group — such as African Americans, Jewish folks or Native Americans — in the same violent settings and poses, the NAACP, Anti-Defamation League or AIM would’ve been all over it.
What a bargain I would have been for them! My hubby made a good living, and while I couldn’t volunteer, they could still have me: a passionate feminist with nonprofit experience plus a lawyer with ready access to the world’s most influential recording artists and managers.
I submitted my resumé, which listed my work in theater as a director, writer, producer, singer and actor. I got an interview immediately. I was over-the-top excited! I walk into the interview:
“I’m Ellen Snortland,” I say. Wow, this is going really well!
“Take a seat,” she says. “I’m a lesbian. Are you a lesbian?”
“Uh, no…” I say. If only I’d said, “Could you beat around the bush, har, har, a little more than that?” The problem is my snappy comebacks fail when I’m flabbergasted. “Do all job interviews start this way?” I think. “It’s illegal to ask if I plan on being pregnant, right? Is it legal to ask if I want to sleep with women?”
But hey, I’m a good sport, so I keep going.
“I just want you to know that I have access to a lot of influential people in rock ’n’ roll,” I sputter.
“Oh, like who?”
I give a short litany of the people I know personally and those my husband also knows.
“I could get meetings with a lot of people and influence cover art. I would love to work on this project and would give you 110%,” I proclaim. She looks over my resumé.
“Do you want to know anything about me?” I ask.
“No, I know enough,” she says. “I’ll talk to my board.”
I called a few days later to follow up.
“Have you had a chance to discuss my application?” I ask, barely being able to choke out the words. I don’t know why, to this day, I get scared on phone calls. What will they do, reach through the phone and pummel me?
“We discussed you,” she says.
“Oh, who’s ‘we’?” using my smiling and chipper telephone voice.
“My board,” she says.
“Is there anything else you want to know?” I ask.
“No. We won’t be hiring you. You’re too pretty,” she says.
That was the last time I ever held women to a higher standard of sensitivity than men.
Sure, I thought she should know better; she shouldn’t discriminate based on looks. I’m sure she got stereotyped all the time because she — in her own words — identified as a lesbian. I decided early on that women will not get far if we expect our “sisters” to hew to a higher standard than simply being human. We’re supposed to be “better” people than men, too?
Women have the right to be as shortsighted, greedy, mean and discriminatory as men. If we base women’s rights on being perfect, we will dig ourselves into yet another deep, double-standard hole.
So wherever that woman is (sorry, I don’t remember the organization’s name)… you blew my mind. Of course, the please-everyone-all-the-time part of me was, “Wait!! I’ll cut my hair! I’ll dress like you! I’m an actor! I’ll get a girlfriend! I can do it! Just give me a chance.” Yeah, that people-pleaser part always needed attention and still does. Even more annoying was that, in my view, I was normal and not that pretty at all.
Looking back at this from my 2023 perch, I realize it was their loss and another potent reminder that there’s nothing monolithic about anyone.

Pasadena Homeless Count
City’s housing department shares 2023 data
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorIn a recent city council meeting, the city of Pasadena’s housing department staff presented the results of the 2023 Pasadena Homeless Count and revealed that there were 556 people experiencing homelessness in Pasadena on the night of the count, a 9% increase from last year.
“Over the last 13 years, there has been a downward trend in our homeless count here, but it has not been a straight line.
Some years it has been up by as much as 18%, some years down by as much as 20%,” said William Huang, director of the housing department.
The count, which began at sunset on Jan. 24 and ended on Jan. 25, attributed
this year’s overall increase to the rise in the number of people who started experiencing homelessness for the first time as well as the growing population of homeless seniors, defined as residents who are over 62 years old. The data also showed that 46% of the city’s homeless were sheltered, the highest in the last decade.
Huang explained that the annual count is one of many data sources utilized by the city to address the needs of the homeless population.
“This enables us to identify trends, to target our resources in certain gaps and needs,” he said. “I’d like to say that this is why so many of the trends in this count are areas that we have already been putting resources in. An example is “Mass Monday”
allocating money to housing for persons with developmental disabilities. Twenty percent of the homeless population are identified as persons with developmental disabilities.
“Senior homelessness is growing, and yet we have a 69-unit permanent supportive housing project under construction right now, hopefully opening in about six months.”
The number of seniors experiencing homelessness in Pasadena rose 31% in 2023. It’s now the fastest-growing group impacted by homelessness.
The housing department’s analysis of the count stated that one of the likely contributors to this increase is the growing gap between rents and income streams for seniors, particularly those living alone. Over half of seniors pointed to financial reasons and job loss or unemployment as contributing factors, and around 17% cited the death or illness of a partner, relative or child as their reason for their homelessness.
Our practice provides our patients the best possible vision and eye care in a comfortable, friendly, and compassionate environment. We believe there’s more to vision than seeing 20/20 but having clear, comfortable, and healthy vision to live your life to the fullest!
In addition to age, the count found disparities between racial demographics. The data showed that Black people make up 8% of Pasadena’s general population but constitute 30% of the city’s homeless population. Black people accounted for 41% of homeless veterans, 39% of youth ages 18 to 24, and 41% of seniors.
By John Andrew AgpaloThe share of Hispanic or Latino people experiencing homelessness returned to pre-pandemic rates of around 38% after rising to 44% in 2022. Disparities are greatest for families and people newly experiencing homelessness.
For those experiencing homelessness for the first time this year, homeless programs coordinator Jennifer O’Reilly Jones explained that the contributing factors were largely economic.
“Job loss, other financial reasons, COVID-19 related factors and eviction were among the top reasons cited,” she said.
Jones also described why the city’s homelessness “feels and looks” like it’s increased by more than 9%.
“This year, we found that roughly one in four people experiencing homelessness were sleeping on the sidewalk or the street, so not in a car or a tent, really in the most vulnerable situation,” she said. “This growth in street homelessness, really, was an 18% growth while the overall growth was 9%.”
The count found that just over half of the people experiencing homelessness in Pasadena are chronically homeless, enduring prolonged periods of homelessness lasting at least 12 months and having a disabling condition. Roughly 96% of people who are chronically homeless were
‘Providing Transparency’
New footage released in civil rights case
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorThe city of Pasadena has released police body-worn camera footage of an incident that has become the center of an excessive force lawsuit. The footage, which was captured on Feb. 20, was accompanied by a statement that said the edited video should help “provide transparency” before all other raw videos of the incident are concurrently released with privacy-related redactions.
“On Feb. 20, 2023, just before 3 a.m., a uniformed Pasadena Police Department officer in a marked patrol car pulled out of the police department driveway onto Walnut Street,” the statement read. “He immediately noticed a commotion in the street at Marengo and Walnut with two people engaged in a heated argument, while a third person stood nearby and appeared to be associated with the incident. The officer stopped his car to investigate. By the time he exited the police
car, the third person had joined the argument and the situation was becoming more agitated. The officer called for additional units while he approached the parties as their relationship and the nature of the dispute was not known. His interaction is captured on the BWC (body-worn camera) as are the interactions of all officers involved.”
The three individuals involved, Barsha Knox and her sons Carlos Towns and “CT2,” a minor who is suing through his guardian ad litem and maternal aunt Fiona Bell, are now seeking compensatory and punitive damages from the city of Pasadena, Pasadena PD, Police Chief Eugene Harris, Officer Ralph Palacios, Sgt. Thomas Blanchard and Lt. Chris Kirby. In their case, they said that the defendants violated “various civil rights under the United States Constitution and state law in connection with the fatal use force.”
The “fatal use of force” mentioned in the case refers to an incident that occurred
on Jan. 22, when Charles Towns, father of Carlos and “CT2,” was shot and killed by Los Angeles Sheriff’s deputies on El Sereno Avenue in Altadena. One of the officers that arrived at the scene to “provided mutual aid and crowd control” was Palacios.
“Upon (the family’s) arrival, they encountered defendant Palacios, who treated them very harshly even after they told him that they believed their father was the person who was shot,” the lawsuit described. “Palacios did not care and instead yelled at them to move although they could see Charles Towns lying dead in the street, uncovered and freshly executed by police.”
The lawsuit then states that on Feb. 20, at approximately 2 a.m., Knox, Carlos and “CT2” were standing outside of the home on the corner of Walnut and Marengo Avenue “in their feelings over the loss of Mr. Towns” when they were noticed by officer Jared Bledsoe.
“Defendant Palacios suddenly ran over from the police department and aggressively took hold of plaintiff Towns,” the lawsuit said. “Palacios violently face planted unarmed plaintiff Towns in the flower planter and handcuffed him, causing pain and bruising. Ms. Knox observed her son being hurt so she protested and tried to intervene. Palacios yelled at her, and she was handcuffed by an unknown white female.”
ful touching,” the lawsuit added. “To plaintiff Knox’s relief, Black female rookie officer Taisyn Crutchfield swiftly intervened, and moved between Palacios and Knox, thereby protecting Knox from the assaulting Palacios. Defendant Palacios was guided away from Knox by Crutchfield, and that situation was de-escalated. But Palacios responded by violently pushing the Crutchfield and yelling ‘Don’t (expletive) touch me!’ or words to that effect.
“Both officers were ordered away from the scene by defendant Sgt. Blanchard, who watched Palacios face-plant Towns but failed to intervene, as required by law.”
According to the city’s statement, officers determined the incident was “the result of a family dispute” after talking to all parties involved. No citations or arrests were made.
“One party complained of a wrist injury, which he claimed came from a pre-existing fracture and he declined treatment or examination by paramedics. No other injuries were reported,” the statement said. “All parties went freely on their way. In this case, no categorical force was used or reported. … To date, no citizen complaints have been received by the PPD regarding this incident. Although a legal claim may be pending.”
Knox reported fearing for her children’s safety. After recognizing Palacios from the fatal El Sereno Avenue shooting, she told him that he was too aggressive to be working as an officer on the street. He reportedly told her to respect the officers.
“Palacios continued to yell at the handcuffed Barsha Knox and suddenly approached her, coming within one to two feet and causing her to have an apprehension of an imminent, unlawful and harm-
The lawsuit brought forward by Knox, Towns and “CT2” has stated that they believe Palacios, Blanchard and Kirby “engaged in specific actions amounting to witness-tampering” after Crutchfield was subjected to an internal affairs investigation and placed on administrative leave, “rendering her unable to speak about the excessive force.”
All plaintiffs have demanded a jury trial, and their case’s claims include unreasonable search and seizure, negligence, excessive force, false arrest, assault and battery.

Loud & Proud
Steve Terradot has watched the wave of acceptance
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorIn Steve Terradot’s 40 years with The Boulevard, Pasadena’s only gay bar, he has witnessed history.
From the Clinton and Obama administrations to the Superior Court’s decision on same-sex marriage, Terradot saw his community feel safer.
“It’s great to see kids grow up without that fear or shame,” he said. “We saw more kids graduating college and doing regular things. It’s really a good thing to watch.”
However, things have changed with the wave of conservativism. The fear has returned.
“They look both ways before they enter or exit a space,” he said. “The pendulum is swinging back. To me, it’s scary. The Human Rights Campaign made statements that it’s not safe for a lot of gay people in this country. Fear robs you of who you are.”
Still, The Boulevard will host its Pride event — The BearGarden Party presents Pasadena Pride Tea Dance — from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 25. The free event is open to those 21 and older.
Gay tea dances emerged as a response to
the illegal restrictions on bars serving alcohol to openly gay individuals. They were commonly held in New York City during the mid-20th century, particularly in areas like Fire Island, Cherry Grove and the Pines.
Taking place on Sunday afternoons, these events allowed attendees to catch a ferry back home and be ready for work on Monday. While tea dances spread to other cities such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Provincetown, Los Angeles and San Francisco, their popularity has recently seen a resurgence, particularly in gay vacation destinations like Fire Island.
Emilio Rodriguez’s The BearGarden Party will host the event. Inspired by a German “Biergarten” and the “bearishly handsome men of Pasadena,” The BearGarden Party is a body-positive space.
“We started the new event with Emilio Rodriguez,” Terradot said.
“Since COVID, we haven’t been open during the daytime. On June 25, we’ll be open at 3 p.m. We’re going to do a tea dance, drag show, have a DJ, dancing and music. We have a barbecue planned for guests with donations to The Trevor Project.”
The Trevor Project is a nonprofit that
Steve Terradot has owned The Boulevard, Pasadena’s only gay bar, for over 23 years.
focuses on suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth.
Terradot said Pasadena has been great to him and The Boulevard, which he has owned for 23 years. Patrons call the bar the “Gay Neighborhood Cheers.”
“The city works with us in so many different ways,” he said. “The health department is very involved. They’ve held several clinics from COVID to Monkeypox testing at the bar in cooperation with the city’s testing unit vans.”
The Boulevard is also a sponsor of the city of Pasadena’s second, family-friendly Pride Month celebration, Love, Loud & Proud!, from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at city hall.
Guests will hear music by LA’s DJ Keelez; performances by drag queens Tia Wanna and Anya K. provided by The Boulevard, and drag king Jesse Sangria; drag storytime; arts and crafts; photographs by Girl Squad Media; dance contests; inflatables; a vaccine clinic and food trucks. Attendees can visit with local LGBTQ+ organizations as well.

A Feast of Sound
Antaeus fills the air with magical music for ‘The Tempest’
By Bridgette M. Redman Pasadena Weekly Contributing WriterWhen scribing what was likely his final solo play, William Shakespeare created an isle “full of noises, sounds and sweet airs.”
As Nike Doukas directs “The Tempest” for Antaeus Theatre Company, she is tapping into the play’s inherent musicality to create what she hopes will, as Shakespeare promised, “give delight, and hurt not.” The show opens at the Glendale Theater on Friday, June 30. It is a production filled with original music, live musicians and live Foley effects onstage.
“The Tempest” is considered Shakespeare’s most mature work, and many think it was his farewell to the theater. In
it, the exiled duke and magician Prospero lives with his daughter and the spirits he commands. When those who wronged him sail close to the island, he conjures up a storm and will either enact revenge or grant forgiveness.
When Antaeus asked Doukas to direct a Shakespeare this season, she said “The Tempest” was the first play she thought of, in part because she felt the themes made it a perfect metaphor for where the world is now.
“It’s very much a play about redemption and forgiveness and about greedy people who just can’t get along,” Doukas said.
Doukas, an MFA graduate from the American Conservatory Theatre and a Shakespeare instructor at the Art of Act-

ing Theatre, brings extensive experience and artistic vision to this production. With a previous directorial stint for the play under her belt, Doukas has further refined her vision, honing in on the abundant musical elements and the island’s auditory landscape. The production centers on her exploration of these aspects, seeking out an immersive experience that captures the essence of the play’s sonic tapestry.
“We’re going to have live Foley onstage that all the actors are participating in,” Doukas said. “It’s really quite beautiful and evocative.”
She connected with John Ballinger, an LA composer, who wrote 10 songs for the production. Actors and musicians perform onstage, including a pianist, guitarist and drummer. She cast singers in all the play’s roles; she also filled the stage with noisemakers, with Jeff Gardner designing sound and Foley effects. Gardner taught actors how to create Foley sounds.
“I imagined what I wanted, and it’s been really collaborative,” Doukas said. “The actors and I and Jeff have constructed a soundscape that the audience is able to watch being created live.”
Doukas described the upcoming production as a beautiful experience in the intimate theater where audiences are up close and personal with the actors seeing them create sounds and a parallel story.
Leading the ensemble as Prospero is Peter Van Norden, with Ana Racić as his daughter, Miranda. Peter Mendoza plays Ferdinand, Elinor Gunn is Ariel, and JD Cullum is Caliban.
“It has been such a heavenly experience,” Doukas said of directing this play. “First of all, I’m a little prejudiced because I’ve been with Antaeus for a long time, but you can’t find better actors anywhere. It’s really world-class actors who know how to handle this language and make you remember and forget at the same time that it’s poetry.”
Her cast, she said, has delved into the relationships between the characters, whether they are the real people or the people and the spirits. While she describes
everyone as phenomenal, she said it has been exciting to watch the interaction between Van Norden and Gunn as Prospero and Ariel, the invisible sprite.
“Elinor and Peter are like a pair of sparring partners,” Doukas said. “Another big question in this play is what is their relationship? What does the spirit really want? I think she wants to be seen by him. Prospero has become consumed by his own ego, and he’s a little bit of a control freak. I think she wants him to see her as a partner instead of as his slave. She’s so feisty and so strong, and I think you sort of see him finally starting to see that she’s separate from him. That she is her own spriteness. There’s a real struggle between them.”
With Ferdinand and Miranda, Doukas said everyone gets to relive what it feels like to fall in love for the first time when it is moving and sweet.
As they’ve neared opening night and they refine the show, Doukas said a very clear story has emerged.
“I hope when people leave they will feel that if they know the Tempest, they understand it even more deeply, and if they don’t know it, they can’t imagine it being told any other way,” Doukas said. “My biggest priority is that people hear and see the play. I’m not trying to retell the story. I’m not trying to correct the story. I’m not trying to redefine the story. I really believe in getting to the essence of it. I think Shakespeare was pretty smart.”
She points out that theater tells stories in different ways than film — it is more theatrical, less literal and responsive to audiences. While taking a nontraditional approach, Doukas said what the play looks like is a secret, something that is part of her desire to surprise audiences with what theater can do.
“Sometimes the visuals overwhelm the story,” Doukas said. “I’ve seen productions where people try so hard to interpret the location that you get distracted by that. I want to make sure it’s a very compelling story about forgiveness and how an old man learns he can forgive really horrible,
legitimate wrongs.”
Miranda and Ferdinand provide Prospero with a path to forgiveness, Doukas said. The couple presents the purest, most idealistic people in the play.
“Everybody else is sort of jaded,” Doukas said. “Those two represent hope for the future. They think this is the last play (Shakespeare) wrote on his own. He might have collaborated on a couple of other plays. He could have made it an ‘old people know best and good luck to the future,’ but you get the sense that he has faith in what’s to come and what he doesn’t know yet. I find that very hopeful
and inspiring.”
The Kiki and David Gindler Performing Arts Center in Glendale is what Doukas describes as new and comfortable, a “beautiful gem of a theater.” It’s a rare opportunity, she points out, to see Shakespeare in an intimate setting rather than a more sprawling space.
“You hear the language, and this is a personal play,” Doukas said. “I believe Shakespeare was really writing about his own demise, the end of his career. To be this up close and upfront with the sensitivities of this play is a real gift. That’s what I would say is wonderful.”

‘Divas Through the Decades’
Pasadena Pops celebrates powerful Black women
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorFreda Payne is more than her hit songs “Band of Gold” and “Bring the Boys Home.” She’s an artist. She has kept her career fresh by starring as Ella Fitzgerald in stage productions of “Ella: First Lady of Song.” The show follows Fitzgerald from her childhood struggles of living with abuse and her time on the streets through her singing career.
Payne is bringing her love of Fitzgerald to Arcadia when Principal Pops Conductor Michael Feinstein kicks off the Pasadena Pops 2023 Rusnak Summer Concert series on Saturday, June 24, with “Divas Through the Decades.”
The show will be held at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden.
“I’m looking forward to it,” Payne said. “I don’t often get the chance to perform with a symphonic orchestra. When these opportunities arise, they’re always a treat.
“I think it’s invigorating to play with a symphony. I get to hear the fullness and the beauty of what that music has and how good
For the best homes, all signs point to
it can sound with strings and extra instruments added, the French horns and the cellos, violins and, of course, a full brass band.”
The show honors “powerful Black women who shaped the American Songbook,” like Fitzgerald, Etta James, Tina Turner, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole and Whitney Houston.
Rounding out the program is a special tribute to Turner with “Proud Mary” and “surprises, all in symphonic sound by Pasadena’s premiere orchestra.”
Nicole Henry returns to the Pops stage to channel Whitney Houston and Tina Turner, while Catherine Russell, who earned a Grammy Award for her work on the soundtrack for the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire,” will perform songs by Etta James and others.
Payne will pay tribute to Fitzgerald, topped off by her solid gold hit “Band of Gold.”
Robust career
The Detroit-born Payne model took ballet and Afro-Cuban dance. While at Hutchins Middle School, she appeared on the nationally televised “Ted Mack’s The Original Amateur Hour.” Singing jingles, Payne was featured on WJR radio’s “Make Way for Youth” and many other local television and radio shows. Payne’s mother spurned a contract from then-unknown Barry Gordy.
When she graduated from Central High School, Payne toured with Pearl Bailey’s
musical review and sang with the Duke Ellington Band. Her first album, “After the Lights Go Down,” was released for ABC’s Impulse Records in 1962.
Moving to New York City, Payne appeared on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,” “The Merv Griffin Show” and “The Dick Cavett Show.”
In 1964, she joined the Four Tops, Billy Eckstine and Nipsey Russell on the Quincy Jones tour. Payne was understudy for Leslie Uggams in Broadway’s “Hallelujah Baby” and performed in the show five times.
Stardom for Payne began when she signed with Invictus Records, ran by her old Detroit friends Brian Holland, Edward Holland Jr. and Lamont Dozier, in 1969. Her single “Band of Gold” hit No. 1 in the United Kingdom and No. 3 in the United States.
Although she left Invictus in 1973, to date she has recorded 21 albums, including several remakes of “Band of Gold.”
Payne hosted “Today’s Black Woman,” a talk show, from 1980 to 1981 before joining the cast of Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Ladies” in 1982. She also starred in productions of “Ain’t Misbehavin’” with Della Reese, “The Blues in the Night,” and “Jellies Last Jam” with Gregory Hines and Savion Glover into the 1990s. Payne’s film appearances include “Private Obsession,” “Sprung,” “Ragdoll,” “The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps” and “Fire and Ice.”
On April 22, 2009, Payne appeared on “American Idol” and sang “Band of
Gold.” In 2011, Payne duetted with Cliff Richard on “Saving a Life” from his “Soulicious” album. She also toured England with Richard in the fall 2011.
Payne recorded “Come Back to Me Love,” a jazz album for the Mack Ave label, produced by Bill Cunliffe.
In April 2018, Payne returned to the stage with glowing reviews in “Ella: First Lady of Song” at the Delaware Theatre Company in Wilmington, Delaware.
In 2021, Payne released an EP of duets titled “Let There Be Love” featuring her singing with Johnny Mathis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Lattimore and Kurt Elling.
Throughout her career, she has been surprised at the longevity of “Band of Gold.”
“If anybody had told me in the early 1970s that it was going to hang around and still be well played and adored for, let’s say, the next 50 to 60 years, I would have said,
‘You must be crazy,’” she said with a laugh.
“It used to puzzle me as to why people would say their favorite song or first 45 they bought was ‘Band of Gold.’ It still kind of puzzles me. I’m not that much of a fan in terms of pop R&B music. I’m a big fan of jazz and the great standards, but I’m grateful and I feel extremely blessed to have it. If it weren’t for ‘Band of Gold,’ I don’t know where my career would be.”
Payne won a 2022 Audelco “Viv” award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her role at Rockville Center, New York’s Madison Theatre at Molloy College production of “Ella.” That validated Payne.
“It’s a great thing to me,” she said. “I can truly be Ella Fitzgerald. I can truly step into her shoes and sing the songs that she made famous. I may not be Ella all the way, truly, but at the same time, I can celebrate her through music and her life. I can be like her.”

Champion’s Curry
Legendary Japanese eatery opens in Old Pasadena
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorAmid the bustling cityscape of 1960s Kanazawa, chef Yoshikazu Tanaka imagined, crafted and perfected a unique recipe for Japanese curry. His style came to be known as “Kanazawa curry,” a fast-casual meal beloved throughout Japan. With a storied history spanning more than six decades, including expansion to over 30 locations in Japan and four in the United States, Champion’s Curry has found a new home in Old Pasadena.
With the mission of kick-starting the next Japanese casual food craze in Los Angeles, the new Champion’s Curry locations built on Tanaka’s original recipe for Kanazawa curry, distinguished by its thick, dark brown curry sauce, thinly sliced cabbage and deep-fried pork, while utilizing locally available ingredients. Champion’s Curry’s Kaitlin Schumer called it Japanese soul food.
“It’s just a staple. If you go anywhere in Japan, it’s sold all over the place,” she said. “Maybe you’ve had a long day, you’re extremely hungry or there’s bad weather, you’re not feeling well, that’s the food you would go to, to just fill you up
and make you feel good again. And it’s just one of those dishes you can eat like endless amounts of times; you’re never going to get sick of it.”
Alongside the specialty curry, which has been served to as many as 2,000 people a day at the original Champion’s Curry restaurant, Schumer noted the katsu sandwiches as customer favorites and attributed their success to the quality of the meat, which is served as a crispy fried cutlet of chicken, beef or pork made with Japanese breadcrumbs.
“The katsu is amazing,” she said. “Our staff, they take great care with the meat. I think what sets us apart from many other curry places is that we really do focus on quality and timing.
“The bread is perfectly toasted. It’s not too thick. (It has) fresh lettuce, tomato … and we do have a side of dipping curry.”
The restaurant’s katsu sandwich was created by chef Yoya Takahashi, who rose to culinary prominence as executive sushi chef at the esteemed westside restaurant Hamasaku before becoming chief operations officer of Champion’s Curry. After discovering the chain and recognizing its potential on the West Coast, Takahashi partnered with the Tanaka family to bring Champion’s Curry to LA.
After the first location opened in Little Tokyo, Schumer said customers began asking about the business’ expansion, particularly to Pasadena. Shortly before opening the new location, Champion’s Curry attended the Rose Bowl’s outdoor food and beverage festival Masters of Taste.
“I was able to go and connect with people, to let them know that we are going to be opening in Old Town,” Schumer said. “A lot of our regulars were actually there, and they were very excit-
ed that we’d be here.”
Schumer described Pasadena as a beautiful city with a welcoming community, embodying the ethos of Champion’s Curry’s new location at 20 Union Street. She said it should feel like home.
“We like to be in small communities,” she said. “Little Tokyo is pretty tightknit, and so is old town. … Downtown LA we are changing into full service, but Pasadena, it is a small shop.
“I think you really feel the authenticity and love in our food. As far as presentation, taste, everything, it’s so detailed … you really see that whoever created this really does love food. Most of our customers, once they try it, are repeat. They’re always back.”
Despite being an international chain, the authentic, homely atmosphere at Champion’s Curry doesn’t end in the front of house, Schumer explained, but is felt throughout the kitchen.
“Typically other places that would franchise or branch out, … it feels very corporate,” she said. “If you go to the Downtown LA location, the owner’s there almost every day. What’s nice is that all of us within the company, we not only work together,
but we are very close like a family. And we are present, so you will be in the store and you may come across one of us from the office or the owner. … It’s very tightknit.”
Schumer’s hope for the restaurant is that it will be a shining light in a growing movement to popularize Japanese fast-casual food in LA. She sees it as a place where both people from Japanese descent can enjoy a childhood classic and people unfamiliar with Japanese curry can try something new.
“The word ‘curry’ can be a little intimidating to us who are from here, but Japanese curry I would think of more as a stew.” Schumer said. “It doesn’t have a very strong spicy flavor. It has deep flavor, but nothing too crazy, so it’s really nice to see customers venture in for the first time and they’re like, ‘Well, I’ve never tried this before, but let’s go for it.’ And then they’re obsessed.
“I think it’s amazing because people weren’t very aware of Japanese or Korean food for a long time. It’s trending right now, and I think it’s a great time to really branch out and let people experience authentic food. We’re really excited to be here.”

Taste of Central America
Café De Leche expands LA’s palate
By Kristine Pascual Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterHailing from Nicaragua, Anya Schodorf has offered Highland Park and Altadena the flavors of her home country at Café de Leche since 2008.
Owned by her and her husband, Matthew, Café de Leche offers international coffee.
The moniker was inspired by Anya’s mother, Rosa, who prepared instant coffee with sugar and milk in Nicaragua. She told her kids, “Pasame mi café de leche.”
When Rosa visited from Nicaragua, she said to Matthew, ‘Mateo, pasame mi cafe de leche.’ And the cafe’s name was born.
“We thought (the name) to be really emblematic of my wife’s background,” he recalled.
When Anya takes a sip of her “café de leche,” it feels like a taste of home. Even the smell and aroma transport her back to Nicaragua. This cafe is not just a business for Anya, but also ritual, a place of comfort and a reminder of home.
The couple met and fell in love in the summer of 2001, when Anya and Matthew were working in entertainment. They took their savings and put it into their side project, Café de Leche.
“We took everything we had, all of our savings and put it into this little café,” he said.
“We wanted to focus on Central Ameri-
can coffees because my wife’s originally from Nicaragua.”
Then the recession happened; they lost their jobs, but they shifted their attention to the café.
“This was supposed to be a side project for us, and the market crashed and I lost my job,” he said. “My wife lost her job, and all we had was this café. We put everything we had into it, and it worked.”
Over the last few years, the Schodorfs have visited several Central American countries, thoroughly studying where their coffee is sourced. Just before the pandemic hit in 2019, the couple visited Ethiopia to learn more about their imports and their producers.
“We travel to countries and meet the producers and source the coffee directly,” he said.
“We were in Guatemala right before the pandemic on the farms meeting the producers and tasting the different coffees and then selecting them and having them imported.”
Café de Leche serves a variety of drinks, counting horchata con espresso and latte campensino (espresso, milk, piloncillo, cinnamon, anise and orange peel) among its signature drinks.
“The latte campensino is very similar to a cafe de olla,” he said.
“We make our own syrup with orange peel, raw sugar and cinnamon. It’s a really nice syrup and you can put that in black coffee or make it into a latte. That one is one of my favorites.”
Other menu items include the Thai-style iced coffee (24-hour cold brew, coconut condensed milk, cardamom and almond extract); hibiscus lemonade (house-made lemonade, freshly brewed hibiscus tea); and the classics, café au lait, cappuccino, chai latte, espresso and cold brew.
Constantly surrounded by coffee and experimenting with flavors may make it difficult to pick a favorite. But for Matthew, that answer is easy.
“My favorite drink is a small black coffee because it’s always different. It’s always unique, and sometimes it’s extraordinarily good.”

Public Works Partners expands to Pasadena
By Pasadena Weekly StaffPublic Works Partners, an urban planning and management consulting firm, opened a West Coast office in Pasadena.
The firm’s West Coast office is in Playhouse Village district’s Spaces Pasadena.
Founded in 2010, Public Works Partners now establishes roots on both coasts to help civic leaders enact their visions for healthy and equitable systems and spaces.
“We are thrilled to bring our strategy for good to the West Coast and be part of the vibrant Pasadena community,” said Celeste Frye, co-founder and CEO of Public Works Partners.
“Our decision to make Playhouse Village our home was a thoughtful one, driven by
the district’s rich history, diverse cultural facilities and robust public art collection.”
Headquartered in New York City, Public Works Partners continues to play a key role in advancing high-profile and integral projects.
The new Pasadena office will allow Public Works to serve its West Coast clients, such as the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and the city of Portland, Oregon, and build relationships with local public agencies, nonprofits and workforce development providers.
“It’s a privilege to lead our firm’s urban planning practice, called Community Health, from within a city I know and love,” said Melissa Lee, principal at Public Works Partners and longtime Pasadena resident.
“Having a physical presence here in Pasadena will allow us to connect with
our West Coast clients in their own communities, better understand the integral nuances of working with different local groups, and forge new relationships.”
Public Works’ Community Health practice focuses on creating stronger neighborhoods through planning, placemaking, economic development and community engagement. The firm also partners with nonprofit organizations and public agencies to reimagine how services are delivered, improve organizational capacity, and increase impact as part of its organizational health practice, spearheaded by Public Works principal Allison Quigney.
“We design solutions for our clients that not only enhance service delivery and drive organizational excellence but also have a profound impact on the communities they serve,” Quigney said. “Having a presence on both coasts provides us with a strategic advantage, allowing us to accomplish these objectives more effectively and efficiently.”
“This is an exciting move and time for Public Works Partners,” said Moe Magali, director of business development at Public Works Partners.
“We look forward to bringing our tools, methods, and transformative urban planning and management consulting solutions to the West Coast.”

Sharing History
Civil War magazines donated to Pasadena students
The Pasadena Civil War Roundtable shared 600 magazines with Pasadena Unified School District students. The magazines feature in-depth, scholarly articles about battles, military and civilian participants and the seminal national conflict they experienced. Normally, they are sold at the group’s monthly meetings to go toward Civil War battlefield preservation projects. With two years of virtual meetings, they had amassed a wealth of magazines. Ashley Butler, the district’s history/social science specialist, accepted the donation. Pictured, Butler, left, receives the magazines from Janet Whaley, Pasadena Civil War Roundtable board member.

Doglegs, Birdies and Eagles
Chip in ‘fore’ the animals
By Jeff Moeller Pasadena Weekly Contributing WriterCombining a fun, competitive event while assisting a cause is the ultimate win-win. Add in the great outdoors, with the ability to walk away a winner, and it is all the more appealing and rewarding.
“Doglegs, Birdies and Eagles” is the playful description of the upcoming Pasadena Humane charity golf tournament. The organization aims to raise $250,000 to provide care and support for animals at the shelter and in the community.
An annual affair with the picturesque San Gabriel Mountains serving as a backdrop, the event is in its 24th year and takes place at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. The event will be Monday, June 26, beginning at 8 a.m.
“The Doglegs, Birdies and Eagles Golf Tournament has been one of the most successful fundraisers for Pasadena Humane. Proceeds from the tournament help fund our lifesaving programs like our kitten nursery, foster care program, pet food pantry, spay/neuter services and much more,” said Kevin McManus, an executive with Pasadena Humane A popular summer hobby, golf offers a getaway on the green. Most make it an all-day excursion. It is incredibly social, and the enjoyable pace is one of its most attractive qualities, with the game not lending itself to only those who might be considered elite athletes.
The event in Glendale features more than putts and pars; it helps pups, too, as the Pasadena Humane animal shelter will be the benefactor of all proceeds raised. Adoptable
dogs will even greet golfers as they arrive in the morning at the country club.
Pasadena Humane prides itself on being more than a nonprofit organization, but also a top Southern California animal shelter. Its mission is to provide compassion and care for all animals.
The organization has a storied history. For more than 100 years — dating back to 1903 — Pasadena Humane has provided shelter and delivered dedicated care and new beginnings for thousands of our community’s most vulnerable animals at their campus, which sports a Spray and Neuter Clinic and a Low-Cost Vaccine Clinic.
How many animals exactly? Pasadena Humane helped close to 40,000 animals in 2022 by way of adoptions, wildlife rehabilitation, lost and found, veterinary services and surrender prevention assistance.
This year’s golf event features a lot to look forward to, highlighted by an array of relaxing, pleasurable activities. The day on the links is capped off by a special cocktail party and celebration dinner, with drinks, hors d’oeuvres and an evening meal.
The purchase of an event Golf Foursome includes a plethora of benefits, including 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, exclusive event swag and the ability to participate in a putting contest. And maybe, best of all, it comes with two mulligans. Golfers of all ages and experience levels rejoice.
The course at Oakmont was originally designed by the legendary Max Behr and redesigned in 2008 by Brian Curley. “With the San Gabriel and Verdugo Mountains as dramatic backdrops, it has more than 7,000 yards of treelined fairways, rolling greens and outstanding course conditions,” said Lisa Dupuy, director of membership at Oakmont Country Club.
“Many of our golfers enjoy Oakmont’s California native landscaping to the fullest by skipping the golf cart and carrying or hand-carting their bags on this beautiful, walkable course. Plus, the professional, friendly
COST:
staff at Oakmont work hard to create a warm, welcoming environment,” McManus said. At the event, there will be a variety of ways to show support without a golf club in hand, including purchasing raffle tickets for a chance to win a portion of the pot and scratchoff lottery tickets, sponsorship opportunities, and one can donate items to help raise important funds during those auctions. Don’t golf but want to help? There is a special online auction that is tax deductible.
While the animals benefit, so do the participants. Though the sport of golf is not considered overly taxing, it does provide good exercise. Good exercise helps with, among other things, creative thinking, anxiety, sleep and decreased depression.
“The great thing about this tournament is that no matter how well or how poorly you play, it’s all for a great cause,” McManus said. “The tourney has been so successful because it is an incredibly enjoyable day. Golfers start the day being met by some of the wonderful dogs that are available for adoption at Pasadena Humane, a pre-round putting contest, fun on-course contests, and an amazing dinner and auction after the round. The golf format is friendly for
ers of all levels.”
