Exploring epilepsy

My first two encounters with epilepsy came from writing classes. One woman shared about her son, who has epilepsy. She has longed to write something meaningful about it from the point of view of not only the child but the parents. I had never thought about epilepsy at all. What is it like to have a child who can suddenly, with little to no warning, fall and go into a seizure? Terrifying, that’s what.

The second instance of my growing epilepsy awareness came via a playwriting class where the grandmother of a child who has epilepsy is creating a stage experience. It’ll be from the point of view of the whole cast of characters involved with epilepsy. Of course, there are the impacted people who physically and psychologically have the diagnosis, but there are others too: friends, family and the authorities … yikes!

This particular family had Child Protective Services foisted on them because they didn’t get their young child onto medications that had been prescribed quickly enough. The family wanted some time to research what side effects would be involved, long-term consequences, etc., and instead, they got reported to CPS for neglect.

I’m staying vague with names and identities because of the centuries-old stigma firmly attached to epilepsy. Even in 2023, it’s still regarded as a verboten subject and — I kid you not — is even used as proof of demonic possession. A family expressly forbade their child to play with an epileptic child for fear of Satan. I need to be reminded repeatedly about what century we’re in.

“I’m a tad shy about this: may I ask about your epilepsy? I might even write a column about it.”

“Yes, of course,” she replied.

“Do people treat you differently knowing you’re an epileptic?”

“Yes! Some people completely avoid me; others make weird spastic gestures because they think it’s funny; others make cracks about sticking a hard object in my mouth so I won’t swallow my tongue. How did that even become a thing — you can’t swallow your tongue! The only useful thing to do is to ensure I can’t hurt my head.”

“Did you see that documentary about dogs who are epilepsy support dogs? They know in advance when their human will seize, so they guide them to lie down and stay right there with them until it’s over.”

“Yes! I saw it! I want one of those dogs. They are so darling; I see them in my neurologist’s office.”

And why doesn’t she have one? The reasons are complex, but it boils down to — as it usually does — money. Insurers don’t cover the dogs; training them takes time and effort.

“I had my first seizure in 2005. Luckily, I was hiking with a friend who was also a firefighter. We were in Tahoe. All of a sudden, I fell to the ground. He knew what was happening and was strong enough to pick me up and carry me down the mountain. Since then, my life has taken a turn I did not expect. Epilepsy does that.”

My new friend is quite a bit younger than I am, and our first “quality” conversation was in my car as I drove her to Sherman Oaks for an event. What is it about car rides that often nurture discussing deep topics?

One of the benefits of being a writer is having an outlet for my curiosity. I also have a rule that if I hear about something three times, that is

a sign from Elle, the Norse goddess of age and wisdom, to dig deeper and “wrestle” with whatever subject it is. (Elle, a crone, attained the status of goddess in the Nordic pantheon because she wrestled a young and powerful Thor to the ground and kept him there.)

Back to the car ride with my friend in my embarrassingly messy Prius. By the way, she is the first person I’ve been able to speak with directly about epilepsy, so admittedly, my questions were not well-informed.

“Do you know if they are doing any studies on psychedelics and epilepsy? Is that a crazy question?”

“No, not at all. And there are many types of seizures; some are treated with medications associated with depression and anxiety, like Atavan.”

My playwriting colleague acquainted us with various types of seizures, as there are no one-size-fits-all: Tonic-clonic, Grand mal, A-tonic (has convulsions), Tonic (no convulsions), Myoclonic (shaking and shivering) and more. She also gave us an eye-crossing litany of meds, over a dozen from Briviact to Zonegran. They all have risks.

Which one works the best is, at best, a crapshoot. It’s understandable why many parents are reluctant to put their young child on these meds, and in one case, that reluctance got them branded as neglectful when the exact opposite was true.

There’s no tidy way to wrap up this column except to encourage all of us to take the topic of epilepsy out of the shadows while generating more funding for an actual cure and/or effective relief. To all people with epilepsy and their families, I’m sorry that we haven’t been more attentive … and I am now paying attention.

Pasadena Village donates to local Buddhist Temple

Members of the Pasadena Village, a local independent senior living community, donated $500 to the Pasadena Buddhist Temple to help cover the replacement of a Pride flag destroyed by suspected arson in April. Wayne April, the organizer of the donation, said the group was moved by what the temple does for the LGBTQ+ community and wanted to present the money as a show of appreciation.

“We wanted to show some solidarity between outside organizations and say ‘We noticed what you are doing and we appreciate (it). Here’s a little bit of money to help the efforts to repair and heal,’” April

said. “It’s important to support organizations — especially non-gay organizations. … There’s nothing lonelier than sticking your neck out and having it chopped off without anybody noticing it.”

The Rev. Gregory Gibbs, the resident spiritual leader at the temple, said the flag was destroyed on the night of April 24. He said a neighbor noticed the flag burning but did not spot the perpetrator. Gibbs said he can’t rule out the possibility that the perpetrator was targeting both the LGBTQ+ and Japanese American community with this act, but he is confident the swift response by the Pasadena Police Department has “scared them off.”

“I think it was a hate crime. We, of course, don’t know the perpetrator’s mo-

tives, but we are increasing our security and watchfulness,” Gibbs said. “Our membership is still a majority of Japanese Americans and, as an ethnic group themselves, they have been subjected to such severe racial prejudice … that they’re extremely vocal against hate crimes and any kind of bigotry.”

Shortly after the incident, April heard the Pride Flag had been burned. He was “outraged” by the act and wanted to see what he could do to help the Pasadena Buddhist Temple. He reached out to Pasadena Village’s LGBTQ+ coalition, of which he is a founder, and asked for donations to help offset the cost of the flag’s replacement.

Gibbs said the flag was created a few years earlier by a local artist, Alan Nakagawa. Since its creation, it has been on display alongside a second Black Lives Matter flag, which was left unharmed the night of the incident. Reports valued the Pride flag at approximately $1,000.

April presented the $500 check to Gibbs on May 18. It was his first time visiting the temple and Gibbs welcomed him with a tour. With the money, Gibbs said the temple plans to commission a new Pride flag. The temple will not back down in their support of marginalized communities, Gibbs said, but they have learned a lesson

about security.

“We may put it up in a slightly more protected way, but not somewhere it can be less openly seen. The whole point is for it to be seen … to make it clear we are open to persons of all genders and sexual orientations. We are going to continue to make it clear that we are concerned about the ability of people in that community to walk through this society with some dignity,” Gibbs said.

Shortly before the Pride flag was burned, Gibbs said a man approached volunteers at the temple demanding they remove the flags. He was agitated and unhappy that he had to see them every day, Gibbs recounted. However, Gibbs said he was surprised by the incident, which he watched on the temple’s security cameras because they had never received any negative feedback about the flags before.

In addition to the donation from Pasadena Village, Gibbs said the temple has received an outpouring of community support.

“We’ve received only supportive literature and love letters and emails from people in the area …We’re not hearing any negative voices. We are getting love and positive support from within our immediate community and the broader Pasadena community,” he said.

Apple-Caltech Patent Case

U.S. solicitor general sides with university

In the wake of Apple and Broadcom’s $1.1 billion trial loss to the California Institute of Technology, Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar has urged the U.S. Supreme Court to reject an appeal by both tech giants in their patent infringement case.

The case originated in 2016, when Caltech stated that millions of Apple products, such iPhones, iPads and Mac computers, with Broadcom Wi-Fi chips infringed its data transmission patents. Professor Robert McEliece and two of his graduate students, Hui Jin and Aamod Khandekar, had invented an error correction coding in 2000 that could efficiently prevent and correct errors that occur when sending data across information channels like Wi-Fi. The team’s invention simplified data encoding and decoding, thus improving the performance of data transmission.

Caltech said that Apple and Broadcom had infringed on the institution’s patent for the technology after incorporating it into their Wi-Fi-based products.

After a unanimous patent infringement verdict on Jan. 29, 2020, the federal jury in Downtown LA’s Central District Court ordered Apple and Broadcom to pay $838 million and $270 million, respectively, to Caltech for violating the university’s patents on its wireless data transmissions technology.

In a statement, Caltech representatives said that they were “pleased” by the jury’s verdict and said that “Caltech is committed to protecting its intellectual property in furtherance of its mission to expand human knowledge and benefit society through research integrated with education.”

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, however, disagreed with the amount of Caltech’s award, calling it “legally unsupportable,” and sent the case back in 2022 for a new trial on damages, which is yet to be scheduled.

Preloger, who was nominated for the solicitor general position by President Joe Biden in 2021, insisted that further review of the case was not warranted, and that Apple had taken “full advantage of the review process … by conducting discovery, submitting multiple motions and — after the USPTO ruled against it — unsuccessfully appealing to the federal circuit.”

The core of Apple’s argument is that there was “prior art” in the field that rendered Caltech’s patents invalid, while Preloger argued that Apple could have “raised these grounds during the instituted reviews. … Apple’s petitions did not identify these additional prior-art combinations as bases for finding the challenged patent claims invalid.”

While Apple and Broadcom maintain that they should have been allowed to challenge the patents’ validity at trial, the appeals court upheld the decision to bar the invalidity arguments as Apple could have previously raised them in its petitions for official review of the patents.

Prelogar supported the federal circuit’s decision, explaining that it interpreted the law correctly and that the companies could not seek to invalidate Caltech’s patents in court because Apple failed to raise its invalidity arguments at the U.S. Patent Office.

In addition to Apple and Broadcom, Caltech has also sued Microsoft, Samsung Electronics, Dell Technologies and HP for infringing the same patents in separate cases, which are all still pending.

The Uninsurable State

State Farm General Insurance Company will no longer accept new applications for homeowners insurance, including personal or business lines of property and casualty insurance.

In its announcement, State Farm made it clear this would not impact existing customers but that the company “made this decision due to historic increases in construction costs outpacing inflation, rapidly growing catastrophe

exposure and a challenging reinsurance market.”

According to published data, State Farm is currently the No. 1 writer of homeowners insurance policies. Its discontinuation of new lines in California further corners the market for homeowners seeking to insure their homes against fires and floods following a historic increase in natural disaster property damage.

Although there is no official metric for determining the total economic losses of wildfires, Californians filed $11.7 billion in wildfire-related insurance claims in 2018; the Camp Fire alone destroyed 11,000 homes that year. In one academic study, economics estimated the total monetary cost of wildfire damages in 2018 totaled roughly $148 billion, or roughly 1.5% of the state’s annual gross domestic product.

Climate Check, a company whose mission is to inform prospective homeowners of climate risk in their area, assessed that 69% of buildings in Pasadena were at high risk from wildfire. They expect that risk to increase leading up to 2050 along with drought severity.

Following 2018, the State of California began investigating ways to ensure Californians had continued access to residential insurance after many homeowners discovered their properties were no longer covered only after they had burned. In 2019, Commissioner Ricardo Lara of the California Department of Insurance announced a oneyear moratorium on this practice, known as non-renewal, prohibiting insurance companies from canceling existing homeowner insurance policies in fire-prone areas.

On Oct. 22, Lara announced the state would enforce a new regulation requir-

ing insurance companies to provide discounts to homeowners and businesses who implemented wildfire mitigation and safety efforts in line with the Safer from Wildfire framework created by the CA Department of Insurance.

Despite CDI’s efforts to ensure continued access to insurance for Californians, this did not deter State Farm’s new policy from entering into effect on May 27.

“We take seriously our responsibility to manage risk. We recognize the Governor’s administration, legislators, and the California Department of Insurance for their wildfire loss mitigation efforts. We pledge to work constructively with the CDI and policymakers to help build market capacity in California. However, it’s necessary to take these actions now to improve the company’s financial strength,” State Farm said in a statement.

Turning a New Leaf

LA Arboretum and Botanic Garden welcomes CEO Michael Desplaines

Following Chief Executive Officer Richard Schulhof’s departure after 14 years, the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden appointed its new leader, Michael Desplaines.

Desplaines, who will assume his position in July, brings over two decades of experience in public garden management, environmental education, fundraising and historic property development and restoration.

“We are excited to welcome Michael as the CEO of the arboretum. He has an impressive track record of leadership and extensive expertise in the horticulture and environmental education sectors,” said LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “The arboretum is a beloved institution that provides community members of all ages access to nature and a peaceful environment. Michael’s leadership will build on the arboretum’s success and ensure this oasis is here for generations.”

The new CEO will lead the 127-acre Arcadia arboretum and botanical garden as it heads into its Five-Year Strategic Plan (2023-2028), which aims to deepen connections with communities; increase access to parks and public spaces; and facilitate the stewardship of urban forestry, resources and public lands.

Coming into the already established and successful Southern California institution, Desplaines’ first order of business is to absorb and observe. “I have the luxury of some time to take things a little slower. Time allows you to look harder, listen better and learn more … from everyone: staff, volunteers, members, visitors, people who don’t come to the garden and community leaders.” Desplaines said.

A longtime admirer of the gardens, Desplaines jumped at the opportunity. “The arboretum has the most amazing plant collection, and it’s known in the business as having a fantastic collection,” he said. “These jobs don’t often open in our industry because they’re so specialized and people tend to stay because we really love our institutions.”

The LA Arboretum is a nationally recognized horticultural and historical organization with plant collections from across the globe and historical Native American and 19th-century landmarks, like the famous Queen Anne Cottage. The gardens are dedicated to environmental conservation and education and operate as an official wildlife sanctuary.

“(Desplaines’) extensive experience in horticulture, conservation, and the envi-

ronment, will advance the Arboretum as a blooming and living educational and cultural resource connecting the community with nature,” said Norma Edith GarcíaGonzález, director of the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation. “As LA County Parks addresses cli-

mate change impact, Michael’s leadership will continue to inspire and engage Arboretum visitors to be active stewards of our environment and further our commitment to access and equity.”

Desplaines earned a Bachelor of Science in horticulture from the University of Rhode Island and a master’s in historic preservation from Plymouth State University.

Previously, Desplaines has served as the CEO and president of the Norfolk Botanical Garden in Virginia. He successfully doubled the operating budget from $4 million to over $8 million and increased annual attendance from 300,000 to over 500,000 visitors. He has also held leadership positions at McLaughlin Garden & Homestead in Maine and Cranston Public Schools in Rhode Island and has served as the executive director of Castle in the Clouds, a historic property in New Hampshire.

“Michael brings a passion to connect people to nature, especially the young so that they become advocates of public gardens and green spaces for future generations and our planet,” said Annette Castro Ramirez, president of the Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation Board of Trustees. “We look forward to Michael working with our dedicated community of stakeholders to further enhance our beautiful gardens, programs, and historic resources. He will be opening new chapters in the rich history of the Arboretum and positioning us for great success into the future.”

Desplaines is ready to bring people back to nature. Currently, the gardens bring in 700,000 visitors annually, but “Wouldn’t it be great to get to a million,” Desplaines said. “Can you imagine that many people connecting to nature through the world of plants so that we can address the environmental crisis? That’s the most important thing that we can do.”

A Shining Light in the City

Historic Castle Green resumes tours, unveils glass shade reproduction

The turn-of-the-century Pasadena resort hotel and special event center, Castle Green, will open its doors and turn on its lights once again.

For the first time in several years due to the pandemic, the city’s historic landmark building is hosting “Springtime at the Castle Green,” its annual open house and fundraising tour. The 2023 event will also mark the unveiling and lighting of the castle’s glass shade reproduction, an effort by the Friends of the Castle Green nonprofit.

“Springtime at the Castle Green” is noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at

Castle Green, located at 99 S. Raymond Avenue in Pasadena. Tickets, $50 in advance, can be purchased at eventbrite.com. They are the same price at the gate.

As the open house tour only occurs once a year, the event offers the community the rare opportunity to witness the beauty of Castle Green up close and step back in time to the iconic Victorian hotel era in Pasadena.

During the event, guests will be able to attend history lectures in the ballroom, and embark on self-guided tours through select resident apartments, main lobby rooms, the penthouse and the basement.

“What’s great about the tour is you really come in and you experience the

building. You can sit on a couch in front of the fireplace, you can sit on the veranda, you can walk up and down the stairs, you could visit about 15 apartments open,” said Susan Futterman, Friends of the Castle Green chair.

“So you really can feel the inside-out of the building — it’s not just a house where you can stand and be led through, it’s a house where you can sit and have refreshments and enjoy. I think that’s so amazing about the tour.”

Outside, there will also be a California Art Club art exhibit on the bridge and plein air painters (outdoor artists) on the front lawn, as well as a live jazz trio and vendor shopping.

Mary Lane Cafe is providing pre-or-

dered boxed picnic lunches, so the Castle Green team is encouraging guests to arrive with blankets to picnic on the lawn — a new experience at the event.

“I (thought), oh yes, it should be like coming and having a picnic at the castle and really experiencing it that way,” Futterman said. “So we sort of made that a theme. We’ll see how it works. I think it should be terrific.”

The open house tour is the Friends of the Castle Green’s sole community fundraiser event for the building. Proceeds benefit its restoration projects, of which there are generally a few in progress at once and typically take a

number of years to complete.

All of the projects that the nonprofit undertakes pertain to the historic fabric of the building, such as painting, retiling and restoring paneling — all to return the landmark to its former splendor.

Unveiling the historic glass shades

The castle’s latest project is to be revealed at “Springtime at the Castle Green:” the reproduction of the near-dozen glass shades in the sunroom and along the veranda.

The new shades were created by Bullseye Glass in Pasadena, Seattle artisan Janusz Pozniak, and local company Rinaudo’s Reproductions, Inc. produced the iron frames and completed the installation.

“It’s an honor to be able to work on something like that, such a beautiful, historic building,” said Joe Rinaudo,

owner of Rinaudo’s Reproductions Inc.

The reproduction of the glass shades has been in the works since around 2002, according to Futterman, as it took time to find the right artisans to recreate the fixtures as close as possible to the originals.

There were only two original fixtures to use as a reference, and there were many challenges regarding finding a nontoxic, but accurate glass compound while correctly matching the color and shape.

The process was also extended due to finances, which were low due to the pandemic halting the annual tour.

With that in the rearview mirror, Futterman is looking forward to revealing the glass shades to the community and continuing to restore Castle Green to its former resplendence.

“It’s wonderful that the people that live there take such great care and thought in the preservation of that building,” Rinaudo said. “It’s always fun to go over there and see what they’re doing, what their next project is.”

Castle Green’s history

In 1898, Castle Green was built as one of the two annexes for the famous Hotel Green, spearheaded by the Patent Medicine Business’ Col. George G. Green and designed by architect Frank Roehrig.

The building design is a blend of Spanish, Moorish, Victorian and other styles, resulting in one of the most stunning landmarks in the area.

It was converted to Castle Green Apartments in 1924, operating as an apartment complex until the owners decided to convert it into a condominium in the ’90s. The building has even been the filming site for many Hollywood movies in its time.

Today, Castle Green is listed as a Nationally Registered Historic Monument, a State Historical Monument and a Designated Pasadena Treasure — well-earned designations for the condominium and special event center.

“The Castle Green … is the oldest of any of the surviving remnants of the grand resort hotel era in Pasadena,” said

Bill Ellinger, Friends of the Castle Green board member and a historic architect.

“A remarkable amount of the original historic fabric has survived. … And that’s something that is very

striking, is impressive to people who get to come to our previous open houses and tours. And they’ll still be impressed by what they can see there today.”

Celebrating Sondheim

Bernadette Peters caps off Playhouse’s series

Bernadette Peters inspired Stephen Sondheim and is considered the premiere interpreter of his work.

So, Peters was the prime choice to cap off the Pasadena Playhouse’s six-month celebration of Sondheim’s work. She’ll perform for the historic Playhouse at 8 p.m. Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10; and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 11.

It’s billed as a glamorous evening where Peters will sing songs from Broadway shows and her Grammy-honored albums.

“It was, frankly, an obvious choice,” said Danny Feldman, producing artistic director of the Playhouse.

“I don’t think I’m that smart for picking her. Who doesn’t want to see Bernadette Peters? And who else embodies the work of Stephen Sondheim and is the master inter-

preter of his work? She is the master Sondheim muse.”

Peters is eager to be on the Pasadena Playhouse stage for the first time because of its storied history. It was recently designated the 2023 winner of the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre.

“I’m thrilled to be there,” Peters said. “I was reading about the Playhouse and how remarkable the original person, Gilmor Brown, was and how they raised the money locally to build the Playhouse and how the people realized how important it was to have an artistic theater in their realm and their neighborhood and that’s something wonderful because the arts are so important for growth in our soul.”

Peters, who lives in Los Angeles and New York City, is the leading lady of Broadway and has performed on stage, film, television,

in concert and on recordings. Starting her career when she was 3 years old. Peters has gone on to snare three Tony awards (and many more nominations), a Golden Globe, three Emmy nominations, four Grammy nominations and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Throughout her career, she’s performed some of Sondheim’s most memorable roles — originating the role of Dot/Marie in “Sunday in the Park with George” in 1984, creating The Witch in “Into the Woods” in 1987, winning a Tony for playing Desiree Armfeldt in the 2009 Broadway revival of “A Little Night Music” and playing both Baby June and Mama Rose in “Gypsy.”

In the Pasadena Playhouse concert, she’ll primarily sing Sondheim’s music not just because that has been the focus of the Playhouse’s season, but because that’s what she prefers.

“I pick songs that I didn’t even sing in the shows because I’m sitting in the wings going, ‘God, that’s so beautiful, that’s so wonderful,’” Peters said. “And I pick songs that I like to be reminded of the sentiments like ‘No One is Alone,’ ‘Children Will Listen’ and ‘With So Little to be Sure Of.’ He writes such beautiful sentiments.”

Just as Feldman thought it was a no-brainer to invite Peters, she knew it was a good fit.

“It’s Sondheim,” Peters said. “That’s what I love to sing. It’s a whole season dedicated to him, and does he deserve it? Oh, yes. I’ll do anything to honor him because he’s just

so deserving.”

She described Sondheim as being an actor’s writer, someone who writes deep, memorable characters.

“His songs say so much,” Peters said. “They go very deep. They’re funny, they’re everything.”

She invites Pasadena audiences to go on a musical journey with her during the show, during which she will sing and tell stories.

“I’ll talk about Steve a little bit, especially in the beginning,” Peters said. “I’m there to entertain. It could be entertaining in a funny way or in a dramatic way, but basically just in a satisfying way so that they feel at the end of the show that they’ve had a wonderful evening.”

Sondheim’s work has kept growing and revealing itself to her in new ways over the years, with her reinterpretations delighting audiences who travel on journeys with her. Peters talks about how she participated in a reunion of “Into the Woods” five years ago — 29 years after she did the original on Broadway.

“So, there you are, you are doing this great role, but you’ve lived 29 years more,” Peters said. “You bring what you can, all the information you can bring, into the role, into the songs, into the lyrics. His intentions become even clearer at different times in your life.”

She said she remembered thinking “Move On” from “Sunday in the Park with George” was a nice song. Years later, it hit her much more intensely.

“I’m realizing as I’m singing now what

the hell that song means,” Peters said. “It had so much depth and so much meaning. It just keeps on peeling and unpeeling and unpeeling. His music is so well thought out.”

She described a conversation she had with him in her dressing room during “Sunday in the Park with George.” She wanted to do a certain section differently than the way he had written it. She said that he paused and thought about before telling her no, that it didn’t mean what she thought it did.

“He considers everything and then says ‘No, because of this and this and this — it means that and that and that.’ He’s made all the best choices already,” Peters said. “It’s just your job to go down into them and live them.”

His lyrics always connect with an audience, Peters said, even those who are unfamiliar with his music. It’s why she continues to love singing his songs. They constantly make her think about things in new ways and the sound of the music is both heartfelt

and beautiful.

“I’m just such a fan of what he says and how he says it,” Peters said. “The music is beautiful because he writes the music and the lyrics. He really says what he wants to say exactly how he wants to say it. The notes he chooses — if it’s a held note, it has more passion than a dotted note and he chooses that carefully.”

When she takes to the stage over the June 9 weekend, it will be the final event in the Playhouse’s Sondheim Festival, the first major festival of its type honoring Sondheim since the composer died in 2021. In Feldman’s eyes, it is the ultimate closer to their transformative season.

“The opportunity to have Bernadette Peters to capstone this whole celebration — which started back at the civic with high school kids from Pasadena Unified — is truly the full spectrum of art making from high school student all the way to the ultimate diva,” Feldman said.

Finding Her Peace

Kit Hoover is at home in La Cañada Flintridge, with ‘Access’

Kit Hoover was 40 years old with a husband and three kids when she landed her dream job: the anchor of “Access Hollywood” and co-host of “Access Daily with Mario & Kit.”

Ever since then, this has been home to Hoover and her family.

“I grew up in Atlanta and I moved here 13 years ago,” said Hoover, who lives in La Cañada Flintridge.

“When we arrived, we drove straight to the Rose Bowl. I immediately felt like I was home. I thought, ‘This is going to be OK. We can do this.’ We didn’t know if were excited to move or not. I took this leap of faith. It’s so funny to look back on. We’re Californians now.”

Keeping it fresh

Hoover earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, after earning an athletic scholarship for track and cross country.

“My whole roots were based in the south,” she said. “I ended up in New York with my husband, and then Connecticut and then here. With journalism, I never wanted to be on TV or to be famous or anything. It was never my goal.

I wanted to do something creative. When I fell into this career path, it seemed to suit me, especially live TV.”

Her career has been robust. She made her TV debut in July 1995 on MTV’s “Road Rules,” that led to an entertainment correspondent position for the syndicated magazine show American Journal.

For the best homes, all signs point to

In 1999, she joined Fox News as a correspondent for Fox Broadcasting Company’s news magazine “Fox Files” and served as a correspondent for “The Pulse” and “Celebrity Spotlight,” and also co-hosted the latter. She also hosted “Fox Rules with Kit Hoover.”

Four years later, she joined ESPN as co-host of ESPN2’s live morning show, “Cold Pizza,” covering events like 2004 Summer Olympics, the 2004 and 2005 Super Bowls, the 2004 NBA Finals, and the 2003 and 2004 World Series.

At age 52, she is just taking it one day at a time.

In January 2004, she became a feature and field reporter for the tennis events such as the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the French Open. She served in this role until July 2006, focusing on topics off the tennis court, interviewing the winner and giving the breaking news while the tennis match.

In March 2005, Hoover and her Cold Pizza co-host, Thea Andrews, were replaced by Dana Jacobson. From 2004 to 2006, she served as a judge on ESPN’s “Dream Job.”

Hoover left ESPN in September 2006.

Her resume also includes stints with the TV Guide Channel, Six Flags TV, TLC’s “Real Simple, Real Life,” and “Shaq Vs.” She served as the co-host of the show alongside Mike Goldberg, as well as the sideline reporter.

Since Sept. 13, 2010, she has co-hosted Access Daily with various co-hosts, and in 2019 became host of the flagship program Access Hollywood.

“I’m just so grateful,” she said. “Recently, I was with Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. I covered the Oscars. It all blends in. When people are giving and gracious, that makes it really fun.

“Lately, on ‘Access Daily,’ I’ve been interviewing people doing extraordinary things with the human spirit. These are noncelebrities and those interviews have interested me a lot more lately.”

“I do feel like I haven’t even hit my stride,” she said. “I’m loving ‘Access Hollywood’ and ‘Access Daily.’ We’re in a great groove over there. We’re leading with gratitude and an open mind.”

Sticking around

Hoover is well known for her optimistic disposition. When she was eight months pregnant with her third child, her house burned down, she was let go from her job, my parents filed for divorce and her cousin died by suicide.

In 2021, while Kit, her husband, and her son were at home, there was a home invasion where the individual robbed them and drove off in their car.

Hoover enjoys living in the area, however, and remains upbeat about it. She enjoys running the Rose Bowl Loop Trail and taking in the flea market.

“La Cañada Flintridge has been a great place to raise our kids,” she said. “It’s a throwback town. The kids can walk around. We always do our big family dinner at Taylor’s Steak House. We go to the Golden Donut, and all the little businesses that we love. We love the concerts on Sunday nights. They’re spectacular. We just love the Arroyo and Pasadena. We hit a home run.”

Creating Space for Color

Ronnie Blades grew up in Pasadena surrounded by two fashionable female figures with wardrobes that crossed generations.

Blades was enamored with the beauty and style of her grandmother, Alberta Price, who was “a bit of a socialite in LA.”

Price attended exclusive Black events in Los Angeles that were not segregated. She received invitations for the Ebony magazine fashion shows, where collections from Saint Laurent, Bonnie Cashin, Bill Blass and Christian Dior were shown. Blades accompanied Price on shopping trips to stores like I. Magnin & Company and Saks Fifth Avenue. One of Blades’ favorite pieces of her grandmother’s was a suit from the 1940s. She still keeps her grandmother’s handbags, shoes and coats.

Cynthia Price raised Blades and her two sisters as a single mom. At the time, Blades loved the designs worn by the stars of the late-1970s TV show “Charlie’s Angels.” She would admire these “super sexy, yet still cool and strong” women and then see her mom wearing the same clothing. Blades has a few of her mother’s treasured items, such as a bikini top from the 1970s and a bag full of vintage gloves made of lace, silk and satin.

In 2017, Blades founded RetroBlades, a vintage clothing brand that recalls her grandmother’s style during the 1930s and 1940s, with a fondness for her mother’s love of 1970s and 1980s pieces. She sells items from both eras — and those in between — at her vintage store Archive Atelier in Playa Vista’s Free Market.

When she founded RetroBlades, she endured the struggles of running a Blackowned business in a predominantly white

industry. While diversity may be increasing in areas of the fashion industry including modeling and designing, the vintage scene lacks representation. BIPOC retailers play an important role in preserving and elevating their history of fashion and culture.

“Vintage sellers are a very unique bunch. We curate, educate, preserve and sell our product,” said Sandra Mendoza, a Latinx member of the Vintage Fashion Guild and Costume Society of America, as well as the owner of Debutante Clothing, a vintage boutique in Pomona. “I wonder if just being a BIPOC seller is enough. Perhaps we also have to bring our aesthetic and BIPOC fashion designers from the past to the table.”

Following in her mom’s footsteps

On a Friday afternoon at Archive Atelier, which opened in November 2021, Blades is wearing a black band tee paired with a blue paisley skirt. She wears a black fedora atop her black hair, which is pulled back, and at least five yellow baccarat bracelets on each wrist.

“I was little, and I would always walk around in my mom’s high heels,” Blades said. “I liked the sound that they made. I liked the sound that her jewelry made.”

Blades grew up wanting to look like the maternal muses in her life. According to Blades, “the only way to find those things were at the thrift store.” Thus, the path to RetroBlades and Archive Atelier was set.

Blades takes inspiration anywhere she

can get it, and this is reflected in the store’s setup. Archive Atelier offers quilted Chanel flats, traditional kimono, a Christian Dior slip, a Missoni knit and accessories from the Wild West. Standout pieces include a multicolored two-piece genie costume from the 1920s and a life-size crow outfit from the 1940s. A leather Hermes backpack from the 1990s greets visitors as they walk in through the front door.

One of Archive Atelier’s loyal customers, a blonde woman wearing a white T-shirt and a stack of gold chains, picks out a Victor Costa blouse that needs its elastic replaced.

“There’s two things you can do,” Blades says. “You can take it to your dry cleaners and have them replace that … or you could even get in there yourself, tie it if you sew.”

Blades, of course, knows how to sew. She learned from her grandmother who worked as a seamstress at Village Cleaners, her grandfather’s dry-cleaning business that had six locations spread across Los Angeles and Pasadena. Price would pick Blades and her sisters up from school when they were little, and they would hang out at the dry cleaners. Blades’ grandfather used to drive around with a pole in the back of his car, delivering clothes to his customers.

While Blades has recently built meaningful relationships with her clientele, she has not always had such pleasant interactions with customers. Though she had

great success at vintage markets, where she sold to legendary designers John Galliano and Jeremy Scott, she was targeted by racism.

“I experienced a lot of people not wanting to buy from me, people maybe skipping my booth if they see it’s owned by a Black woman,” Blades said. “It was difficult for me when I was selling at markets because a lot of microaggression and just different things would happen and it was annoying, but luckily I don’t experience it anymore.”

A few of the most special pieces in her collection are from Black designers. When visiting San Francisco recently, Blades went to an exhibit on African American fashion designer Patrick Kelly. A standout piece in the exhibit was “a little black handbag that had perforated leather bows, colorful bows all on the bag.” Blades acquired one of these bags made by the original designer who created them for Kelly.

This is the magic of vintage — finding treasures that have lived their own lives, and somehow swiveled their way into yours.

Setting a precedent

“You don’t see as many people of color in fashion the higher up the market you go. I see the vintage marketplace as a spectrum,” Mendoza said. “On one end you

have low price point, everyday vintage and resellers of second hand that use the term vintage very loosely. I see more diversity on this end of the spectrum. As you move toward the higher end price point of the vintage spectrum, it is predominantly white. I live in California, so I see more diversity among vintage sellers here because California is so diverse.”

Mendoza states that in 2020, after the death of George Floyd, many people in the vintage community tried to act as allies and amplify Black voices. However, she believes this amplification has faded over time. “If vintage marketplaces and show promoters could make diversity a part of their manifesto or mission statement, I think it could lead to a more consistent awareness of diversity,” Mendoza said. “But how many vintage marketplaces even have a mission statement?”

Mendoza also brings up the same Patrick Kelly exhibit that Blades visited at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, pointing out how fashion historians are making efforts to explore diversity.

As Mendoza mentioned, there is a wide variety of vintage to be explored in California. You can find a place to spend hundreds on a luxurious designer relic or you can leave with a rare treasure and $5 less in your wallet.

Approximately 3,000 to 5,000 shoppers show up every Sunday to fulfill their vintage fix at the Melrose Trading Post. The grounds at Fairfax High School may be

described as designer logo mania. Young people walk around wearing Gucci shirts, carrying Chanel flap bags and with the Louis Vuitton monogram printed onto jean pockets. A plethora of teenage girls in Nike Air Force sneakers and oversized jackets swarm the vendor tables. There is lots of eyeliner and colored hair — purple, blue and yellow to green ombré-style braids.

Looking around the fest of street food and streetwear, there are quite a few booths run by people of color. There is Peculiar Finds, selling antique homewares; a booth specializing in vintage kimono; and Grandma’s Closet, selling biker jackets embroidered with cartoon characters like Betty Boop and Tinkerbell.

“Being in Los Angeles, … it’s a very diverse community of people that are in this vintage and repurposed world,” said Natalie Iturbe Jackson, special events and marketing manager of the Melrose Trading Post. “Some people do bring things directly from their culture, which of course makes the market very vibrant.”

While this level of diversity may not be as visible at the top of the vintage industry, and even in states other than California, every vintage seller makes a difference.

Bringing culture to the forefront, as Blades, Mendoza and market sellers have done, increases awareness of the diversity missed out on due to the industry being largely white dominated.

In the future, Blades dreams of opening vintage stores abroad. She wants to bring her collection to someplace like Italy or Mexico. A more immediate goal of hers? To find a vintage clothing hanger from her grandfather’s Village Cleaners — another piece of personal fashion history to bring her closer to the bold individuals who paved the way.

Pasadena Unified School District News

Students awarded for insect insights

Several Sierra Madre Middle School students were recognized for their insect surveillance and research on mosquito-borne diseases.

At a Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education meeting on May 25, leaders from the San Gabriel Valley Vector Control District presented “Vector Inspector of the Year” awards to 24 SMMS students, the most earned by any participating school.

The awards stem from months of work studying specimens found in the students’ backyards as part of Operation Mosquito G.R.I.D. (Growth, Reduction and Increased Detection).

The program also introduces students to

potential career paths and allows them to use the same equipment and observational techniques as professional ecologists. In March, the district said science teacher, Ravishanth Dev Anandhan became the first PUSD teacher to receive the Public Health Teacher of the Year Award 2022.

POTENTIAL BIDDERS:

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO

PROPERTY OWNER:

The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponeme nts be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call FOR SALES INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL (855) 986-9342 or visit this internet web-site www.superiordefault.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2022-2075. Information about postponements that are very

short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web-site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

NOTICE TO TENANT:

You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code.

If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call FOR SALES INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL (855) 986-9342, or visit this internet website www.superiordefault.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2022-2075 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee.

Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. THE PROPERTY IS BEING SOLD SUBJECT TO THE NINETY DAY RIGHT OF REDEMPTION CONTAINED IN CIVIL CODE SECTION 5715(b).
