The Promise Of Seneca Falls

There’s more to July than Independence Day

When I was 8, my mother took me to a garage sale on a bright summer day. The peonies were popping, robins were hopping and all was well in the little prairie town of Huron, South Dakota in the early 1960s.

Mom gave me a dollar to spend however I wanted. “Why do they call it a garage sale?” I asked. “Because people go through their garages and pull out things they don’t want anymore to sell to neighbors,” she said. We walked around the block to a two-story clapboard house built in the 1890s.

There were tables on the driveway covered in linens with antiques, fancy kerosene lamps, sugar and creamer sets and dressers. The lady, who seemed antique herself said, “I have some things in my attic that you might be interested in. Would you like to go up?” What could have been the opening scene of a horror film turned into a lifelong love of women’s history.

I made three purchases that day: a toy sewing machine that worked, with Little Red Riding Hood decals; a skinny panoramic photograph of thousands of World War I doughboys at an airfield in Belgium; and a delicate, beautifully hand-embroidered white voile dress.

“I wore that to Suffrage parades. Now that I am moving to the Twin Cities to live with my daughter, I don’t need these things,” the woman said.

“I only have a dollar,” I said.

“That’s fine,” she responded.

I still have all three of those items.

My mother was four when women won the vote in 1920. My grandmothers both had families before they were “allowed” to vote. I could kick myself for not asking them what it was like to finally be considered a full citizen.

Now, a quick quiz. 1848 is important because, on July 19 and 20, 1848, 200 people — predominantly women — convened the first American women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York. It was the beginning of the women’s suffrage movement, suffrage being the fancy word for the right to vote.

It wasn’t until August of 1920 that American women won the right to vote, even though many people were still excluded. It’s more accurate to say that American women won the right to vote; white women gained the privilege of voting. Their sisters of color wouldn’t gain access for many more years.

Of the dozens of women who attended the Seneca Falls convention, only one lived long enough to vote. Charlotte Woodward Pierce was a teenager when she hitched a wagon ride to Seneca Falls to witness what for then was radical: a gathering of women debating their social, civil and financial rights.

In 1848, European American women had very few rights, and once a woman married, she was effectively her husband’s property. On the other side of the coin, Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) women were included and consulted in every aspect of life, from the hearth to war and everything in between. They had no interest in becoming U.S. citizens, where they would lose all agency.

How many of us know that founding father Benjamin Franklin was aware of the democratic principles espoused by their so-called “savage” neighbors? The Founding Fathers actively ignored their native brothers’

council after Franklin invited Iroquois leaders to Philadelphia. When the Haudenashonee men walked into Independence Hall, the first thing they asked was, “Where are the women?” They could not fathom a decision-making body excluding women.

Where are the women? It’s a question I always ask and invite you to ask with me. We still do not have equal rights under our constitution, not after Philadelphia and not after Seneca Falls, and not after the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment since it’s still not been signed into law.

And if the right-wing extremists get their way, women will lose even more rights. There are actually contemporary politicians whose campaigns promise to destroy birth control and women’s vote.

I cherish the purchases I made in that attic but especially the dress. I have shared it worldwide while performing my solo show, “Now That She’s Gone.”

To commemorate Seneca Falls, here are some activities I invite you to explore:

• Find out who in your family was the first to vote

• Subscribe to Ms. Magazine, a publication that continues to provide the most up-to-date news on women’s status in the world

• Go shopping for women’s rights merch at: www.nationalwomenshistoryalliance.org in preparation for Women’s Equality Day, celebrated annually on August 26. And join the NWHA as a member!

• Specifically celebrate the July 1848 convention by attending in-person or online events hosted by the National Park Service. Check their Facebook page and YouTube channel. Enter Women’s Rights National Historical Park for the July 22 and 23 events.

Compiled by Pasadena Weekly Staff Rental Board told to establish a fee to add staffing

A consulting firm hired by the Pasadena Rental Housing Board said the city will need to establish rent registration fees to fund additional staff if it wants to enforce Measure H. A charter amendment approved by voters last year, Measure H established the Pasadena Rental Housing Board to mediate conflicts and enforce new rent control standards.

The consulting Firm, BHYV, was brought in to create a recommendation on how the Pasadena Rental Housing Board should operate. In his presentation, Chanée Franklin Minor said there are two models used by similar government bodies: passive enforcement and active enforcement.

Given that Measure H establishes rent

registration, which would allow the board to compile data for enforcement purposes, Franklin-Minor said Pasadena is already committed to an active enforcement model. According to Franklin-Minor, fees are very common for local governments to implement to cover the cost of database management and staffing.

An active enforcement model would also require the Housing Board to “conduct extensive outreach to inform tenants and owners about their rights and obligations under the law and program regulations, maintains full and accurate records through reporting requirements for initial rents and eviction proceedings, provides mediation and dispute resolution services and actively enforces the law and program regulations when it finds violations.”

The Pasadena City Council did not take any action on Franklin-Minor’s presentation, but she recommended the Rental Housing Board set up a staffing structure first so that they can know how much the registration fee will need to be.

“You can’t take up the fee because the fee is to cover your budget. You can’t have your budget without knowing who you are going to hire and how much they are going to cost,” Franklin-Minor said. “So, the first thing you have to do is create your staffing model.”

Gunman fires shots into Pasadena homes

No injuries were reported in a shooting that occurred on July 11 along N. Los Robles Avenue in Pasadena.

Officers were notified that shots were fired at 7:17 p.m. and arrived at the scene approximately two minutes later. PPD was notified by a system called ShotSpotter, which is a gunfire detection system that uses acoustic sensors to alert the police of an incident.

new geothermal energy brings us closer to meeting goals adopted by the city council.”

The addition comes as a 15-year contract approved by the city council with the Southern California Public Power Authority to purchase geothermal energy from Geysers Power Company LLC. The contract with Geysers Power Company will begin on Jan. 1, 2027.

Pasadena Water and Power is updating its Power Integrated Resource Plan, which is the city’s long-term outline for how they intend to supply “reliable and environmentally responsible electricity at competitive rates.” This acquisition of geothermal power advances the city’s goal and could account for a quarter of PWP’s retail energy sales by the end of 2027.

When law enforcement arrived, they confirmed evidence of a shooting, and forensics experts examined the scene. Police say three houses were struck by as many as 21 rounds. The investigation is ongoing.

Pasadena enters a geothermal contract

Pasadena Water and Power is expanding its portfolio of renewable energy to include 25 megawatts of geothermal energy. In a news release, the city stated the decision came as part of Pasadena’s commitment to clean energy.

“Pasadena continues to invest in our renewable future,” said PWP General Manager Sidney Jackson. “The addition of this

‘Speeding Kills’

Politicians, stakeholders rally support for traffic cameras

Assemblymember Laura Friedman joined Glendale leaders to rally support for the passage of AB 645, which would authorize six cities — Oakland, San Jose, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Long Beach and Glendale — to begin a five-year speed camera pilot program.

Unveiled during a recent news conference at Glendale’s Eleanor J. Toll Middle School, the pilot program would permit Glendale to install traffic cameras in school zones and areas known to have a history of speeding or crashes. The cameras would capture photos of cars traveling over the speed limit and allow the cities to mail speeding tickets to the driver’s home.

“A few years ago, unfortunately and tragically, a child was killed in front of these schools,” Friedman said. “We have far too many deaths happening across the

roads in California, not just a few years ago, but every day. And those deaths have been skyrocketing, believe it or not, in the last few years. … We have seen an increase in pedestrian and cyclist deaths in the state of California. We have seen an increase in street racing, reckless driving and people driving with a wanton disregard for safety and life.

“There’s a very human toll in terms of lives. Now we call these accidents when they happen, but most of them are not accidents. … They’re preventable through road design. They’re preventable through education and preventable through enforcement.”

Despite focusing on enforcement, Friedman explained that the new program was not built to be “punitive.” Drivers must be going at least 11 miles per hour over the speed limit to get a ticket from one of the cameras, and each driver’s first ticket serves as a warning. The second ticket will

cost $50 for drivers going 11 miles per hour over the speed limit with a “small escalator” for every additional 10 miles an hour over the limit. There will also be warning signs displayed before drivers enter a speed camera zone, and the tickets will not penalize drivers with license points.

“These are not meant to be cash cows for cities; they’re not meant to be revenue generators,” Friedman said. “If the cities don’t decrease the amount of tickets they’re issuing from the cameras, they have to either do physical improvements or stop using them all together because our goal is to reduce speeding, not to issue tickets.

“All the money that’s generated goes to implementing the program, and anything that’s left over can only go to physical improvements for those same streets to make them safer. … We have been getting support for this bill from the legislators, but also from grassroots advocates and activists all over the state of California who are simply saying, ‘Enough is enough.’”

Mayor Dan Brotman added that, though he said Glendale is committed to Vision Zero, an initiative created to eliminate traffic-related deaths, federal traffic-control device guidelines have limited the city’s ability to implement engineering changes that make roads safer.

We also know that speeding doesn’t kill equally. It disproportionately kills lower income people, children and seniors. … They are more often the ones who need to walk, bike or take transit to get where they’re going. These are real people, husbands, wives, parents, children, friends, co-workers and neighbors. This is a problem we can and must tackle.”

Following the implementation of 162 new speed cameras in Chicago, a study by the University of Illinois at Chicago found that speed camera violations were more likely to fine drivers in minority communities. Friedman said that Glendale’s program will be different.

“If you don’t take a very careful approach to this kind of legislation, you can certainly have unintended consequences in this bill,” she said. “We have measures to ensure that they are equitably distributed in every different kind of neighborhood in terms of income and ethnicity so that they’re not all put in certain types of neighborhoods. We also have a lengthy community process to use the camera so that the neighborhoods themselves can weigh in and say, ‘Yes, we have a problem in our neighborhood.’”

After passing with approval through the Senate Transportation Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee, AB 645 will now move on to the Appropriations Committee following the legislative summer recess, which runs from July 14 to Aug. 14.

He explained that while Glendale officials will continue to redesign and re-engineer the city’s roads, the planning and construction processes can take years to complete and cost millions of dollars in infrastructure spending. He called AB 645 a short-term solution.

“Right now, the easiest way to implement technology is speed cameras,” Brotman said. “With AB 645, we will finally be able to test this technology. We don’t know what we don’t know, which is why this very modest pilot is so valuable. It has all the safeguards anyone could reasonably ask for to ensure fairness.

“Speeding kills. We’ve known that for a long time. It’s the primary factor determining whether a pedestrian or bicyclist survives being hit by a moving vehicle. …

“We have addressed every concern that we believe has been brought up about this bill to the point where we think that, when this is signed into law, it will serve as a model for similar legislation around the nation,” Friedman said. “Speed cameras are being used in other states. They’re being used in New York City and many other places, and they have seen a dramatic decrease in speeding in the areas that they’re using the cameras. And they’ve also seen a dramatic decrease in injuries and deaths due to speeding and reckless driving. I’m hoping that we replicate those same results here.”

Season of Change

Veronica Villagrana’s passion is students

Veronica Villagrana is excited to serve students in her new role as principal of Mary W. Jackson STEAM Multilingual Magnet Elementary.

“We embrace their languages and I really love the fact that we have options for our parents,” Villagrana said.

Those include parents who want their children to learn Spanish, or Spanish speakers who yearn to attend a mainstream traditional school.

Villagrana, who served as assistant principal at Willard and Sierra Madre Elementary for two years, replaces Rita Exposito.

she attended Willard, Sierra Madre was very close to where she lived growing up.

For Villagrana, the interaction with students is a longtime passion.

“I just love working with students, particularly the younger kindergarten through fifth grade students,” she said.

“I think it’s about building the foundation, making sure that every child has the opportunity to build a strong foundation and then we build upon that. I value the beginning because we’re forming those global citizens of the world. I’m happy to be a part of the beginning.”

Villagrana’s resume also includes stints as a teacher on special assignment/instructional English language coach for five years. She began her career as a classroom teacher at Altadena Elementary School.

“My philosophy is all students should have an equal opportunity to learn,” she said. “I embrace equity and inclusion. Our jobs as leaders and teachers are to foster children and what they bring to the table. We meet them where they’re at. Teaching and learning are an art. We’re here to make sure to meet them where they’re at.”

Villagrana grew up in Pasadena, a product of the Pasadena Unified School District. She attended Willard Elementary School, where she later taught and became an English learner instructional coach and transitioned to assistant principal. For the past two years, she served as assistant principal of Willard and Sierra Madre elementary schools.

“It was such a pleasure to serve both communities,” she explained. “It was such a joy to get to now, that new community and immerse myself fully.”

A graduate of Cal State LA and Cal Poly Pomona, she recalled fond memories of Sierra Madre. As a child, she played with her best friend who lived there. Although

As a magnet elementary school with a STEAM focus and a Spanish dual-language immersion option, Jackson Magnet offers a blended instructional program. With an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM), Jackson Magnet also prepares students to become biliterate, bilingual and bi-cognitive individuals able to communicate in English and Spanish and interact with people from multiple cultures.

The Spanish dual-language immersion program is based on the 90:10 model, which means the kindergarten curriculum is taught 90% in Spanish and 10% in English. At each subsequent grade level, the amount of instruction in English is increased by 10% so that by fourth grade, students are taught 50% in each language.

Mary W. Jackson STEAM Multilingual Magnet Elementary — at 593 W. Woodbury Road, Altadena — was renamed as such recently, thanks to efforts by the district, the public and Exposito. The school’s namesake is Mary W. Jackson, one of three African American women employed by NASA depicted in “Hidden Figures.”

Students and staff cast ballots coinciding with the midterm elections in November.

“With this name change, we are honoring the barrier-breaking legacy of Mary W. Jackson and we are inspiring generations to come,” Villagrana said.

‘I’m PUSD Proud’

John Maynard to lead Don Benito Fundamental

John Maynard has served Pasadena Unified School District for 24 years as a teacher, behavioral response to intervention coach and assistant principal.

Now, he has taken over as principal at Don Benito Fundamental. He replaces Dr. Merle Bugarin who is returning to serve English learners at the district level.

“I’m very excited,” Maynard said. “Don Benito has a great history. It’s been known to be a great school in the Pasadena area for a very long time. To be able to work with a veteran staff who cares deeply about students is great. We can see how we can push forward and rise up to new heights.”

During his 24 years with PUSD, Maynard served as assistant principal at Altadena/Eliot Arts Magnets, overseeing dayto-day operations at the elementary site.

Maynard attended Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania studying chemistry and sign language interpreting. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree and moved to California to work at Cal State Northridge’s National Center on Deafness in 1994. He also earned a Master of Administration from Cal State Los Angeles.

In 1996, Maynard began his multiple subject teaching credential program at National University and also began teaching math and science at a private Armenian school in Montrose.

He joined PUSD in 1998 at Eliot Mid-

dle School, where he taught for 17 years. During his tenure at Eliot, he taught all three grade levels and most subjects across all three grade levels.

Primarily his work was with the sixth grade, teaching math and science, but he also taught English, history, drama, debate, and American Sign Language classes.

When Eliot became an Arts Magnet, Maynard adopted the shift, teaching an introductory guitar/rock band class as well.

Thanks to a partnership with Little Kids Rock (now known as Music Will), Maynard started teaching guitar to his homeroom class before the program expanded.

“When they asked me if I was interested, I thought, ‘This is the greatest thing I’ve ever heard in my life,’” said Maynard, a longtime guitar player.

His students played at Little Kids Rock’s gala in New York City as the back-up band for Elvis Costello and Bonnie Raitt.

“They were so good,” he said. “They played ‘What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding.’ I got to see my kids play with Elvis Costello and Bonnie Raitt.”

Maynard has since served as assistant principal in the Pasadena Unified School District, working for one year at McKinley K-8 School, and then returning to Eliot as the assistant principal for the past two years.

When the opportunity arose to lead Don Benito Fundamental, he jumped at the chance.

“I’m very PUSD proud,” he said. “I love PUSD. I’ve been in the district since 1998. I didn’t want to leave Pasadena.”

He enjoys the students, especially.

“I know education really moves people,” said Maynard, whose wife, Wendy, is also a teacher. “You can make an impact with students. It’s so great to have an opportunity to work with students and see an impact being made. I love working with the upper-grade students.

Those students remember me and visit me and tell me what an impact I’ve made on them. I frequently run into adults now who used to be my students as far back as sixth grade. They stop me in the middle of the street, in Old Pasadena and tell me how great it is to see me.”

Shopping on a Budget

Advice on looking for sustainable back-to-school supplies

Between navigating store aisles and online sales for everything from clothes and shoes to supplies and sports equipment, back-to-school shopping can be a time-consuming — and expensive — endeavor.

To help stay on budget while still getting everything you need, consider these tips from Vitaly Pecharsky, head of deals for Slickdeals, an online community of shoppers working together to shop smarter and save more.

Take stock of current inventory

Before you hit the stores, take inventory of items you already have at home or in the office to see what you truly need. Knowing what you already have on hand can help you avoid the temptation of stocking up on items you may not even need just because they were on sale. That 50-cent pack of crayons may be a good

deal, but too many of those can add up, especially if you realize later you had the same item sitting unused in a closet or drawer at home.

Check with teachers

Don’t be afraid to email your children’s teachers before classes start to find out what supplies are absolutely necessary. Sometimes a school will put out a list, but the teachers may not require you to have all the items on the list, particularly if students may be sharing and supplies may need to be restocked later in the school year.

Tap into technology

Shopping online is a quick and easy way to compare products, services and prices, but it can be overwhelming trying to determine if you’re really getting the best option. Before making a fi nal decision on everything from laptops to

Buy pre-owned

From uniforms and sporting equipment to clothing and more, not everything needs to be new each school year. Visiting online consignment shops can help you find big savings on like new, often brand name clothing, accessories and more.

Avoid buying for extracurricular activities all at once

If your children are trying new sports, clubs or extracurricular activities for the first time, consider waiting to purchase all the necessary equipment. Oftentimes, you may be able to borrow or buy pre-owned items from other parents whose kids have outgrown the equipment or no longer participate. If your children end up deciding a sport or activity isn’t for them, you’re not

stuck with things that may end up collecting dust in the garage or basement.

Shop without your kids

Leaving the kids at home when shopping may help save money, according to a survey commissioned by Slickdeals and conducted by OnePoll. The study of 2,000 parents in the United States found 2 out of 3 respondents believe shopping with their kids tends to be more expensive than shopping by themselves with solo ventures costing an average of $133 compared to $179 when taking children along.

Take advantage of student discounts

If you have children in college, you may be able to use their student ID cards to your advantage to save even more money. Before making purchases on big-ticket items like tablets or laptops, be sure to inquire about discounts available only for students. Some companies even offer student-only memberships for discounted services, such as shipping, video and music.

Blair grads reach world-class milestone

Pasadena Unified School District graduates are critical thinkers with a global perspective and, according to staff, they have the credentials to prove it.

In addition to their high school diplomas, 17 PUSD graduates from Blair High School have recently earned the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme or the IB Career-Related Programme certification following examinations.

“I’m incredibly proud of our IB Diploma recipients and IB Career-Related Programme graduates,” said Blair Principal Amy McGinnis.

“These students demonstrate the tenacity, intelligence, curiosity and diplomacy to help make our world a better place. The IB program is a very rigorous educational framework that prepares students for college and beyond. I am excited to see how these Vikings will positively im-

pact the lives of others.”

Those who received IB Diplomas are Ananya Bhargava, Lucine Ekezian, Katherine Higginbotham, Hadrian Huidor,

Samuel Igler, Katlyn Ong, Ellie Sahand, Lillian Sanfilippo, Joseph Sitzman, Rereloluwa Ogunleye, Leah Wallace and Daron Yacoubian.

Kara Griffin, Tabita Herman, Tiffany Jasso, Annabella Nunez and Ariel Phelps earned IB Career-Related Programme.

“The IB program at Blair enabled me to direct my own learning pathway and develop skills and confidence which are essential to thrive and make a lasting difference in this world,” Yacoubian said.

“It has cultivated my scholarly passions and enriched my character. Ultimately earning an IB Diploma with a bilingual distinction is a crowning achievement for me after years of hard work. I look forward to using the skills I have learned as an IB learner during my upcoming years at UCLA and beyond.”

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme prepares students for college and beyond by encouraging them to ask challenging questions, and develop the ability to communicate with and understand people from other countries and cultures.

The Power of Words

PUSD language programs in high demand

The growth of dual language programs at the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) speaks volumes, according to staff.

Due to increased demand, more students will have the option to engage in Armenian language instruction during the school day in the 2023-2024 school year.

“Last year, we served our youngest language learners, but next year, we will offer Armenian language instruction as an option to all students at Webster Elementary,” said Superintendent Brian McDonald.

“This is a one-of-a-kind program, and we are very excited to offer it to more students at all grade levels at Webster.”

The Armenian World Language Program kicked off at Webster Elementary School in the fall 2022 with instruction for transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grades in a 45-minute daily class during the school day.

The older students in second through fifth grades were welcome to participate in an afterschool Armenian language class on Monday afternoons. The intention was to add one grade level per school year to the daily class model, but the overall success of the program has prompted adjustments to the program for this coming school year.

“Within the first two months of the Armenian Academy’s opening at Webster, our students made tremendous progress in speaking and in understanding,” said Webster Princi-

pal Kristin Forrest. “Parents have commented on the amount of vocabulary our students are able to share with them at home. About one fourth of our Armenian Academy students are non-native speakers who are learning this new language in a highly engaging and immersive classroom environment.”

The Armenian World Language program at Webster has led to increased interest and enrollment, especially from families with children in grades three through five — students eager to learn about Armenian language, arts,

and culture during the school day.

The Armenian Relief Society (ARS) has been conducting the after-school classes and will work with Webster educators to support the arts and culture component of the program.

PUSD’s Dual Language Immersion Program began in the 2009-10 school year with a handful of classes. It now includes programs at over a dozen PUSD preschools, elementary, middle and high schools in four languages: Spanish, Mandarin, French and Armenian.

In Dual Language Immersion programs, students master academic subjects in both English and the target language. Students emerge from the programs fluent in both languages, a plus in today’s world. The opt-in language program at Webster Elementary ensures that students are uniquely equipped for world language programs offered at Blair Middle and High schools.

Essential Electronics

Four top tech devices to enhance education

Gone are the days of paper and pencil being the necessities for learning. Schoolwork has gone digital, meaning it’s time to gear up your students for success with the top tech that keeps them connected in the classroom and beyond.

From kid-friendly smartphones and earbuds to connected wearables and devices that keep learning fun, consider these ontrend solutions as your kids head back to school.

Find more schooltime tech by visiting qualcomm.com/snapdragonbts.

Power at-home productivity

Students (and parents, too) can accomplish more after school like homework, studying and socializing with the Dell Inspiron 14 laptop powered by the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 Compute Platform. Equipped with the Qualcomm AI Engine,

this processor enhances audio and visual experiences. Effortlessly multitask and shift between apps without sacrificing speed or battery life, given the power-efficient processor that helps deliver long battery life even in thin, light and quiet designs that don’t require a loud, hot fan.

Listen and learn

Whether students are listening to prerecorded lessons, immersing themselves in audiobooks or simply enjoying some favorite music while completing schoolwork, high-quality earbuds can help block out noise for maximum productivity. For example, the Moto Buds 600 ANC Wireless Earbuds feature Snapdragon Sound technology that delivers advanced wireless audio quality. A game changer for wireless audio, it eliminates the gap between wireless and wired connections for high-resolution music and synced entertainment.

Opt for kid-friendly wearables

If a smartphone is a bit too advanced for your little learners, an age-appropriate smartwatch that keeps them connected may be a better fit. Empower kids to be kids with an option like the Snapdragon Wear 4100-powered Verizon Gizmo Watch 3 with a range of benefits from 4G LTE cellular connectivity to games and GPS-safe zones. This smartwatch is designed with safety and fun in mind without the distractions of a smartphone so you can have some peace of mind while keeping students focused in the classroom.

Keep in touch during schooldays

Hectic schedules during schooldays and workdays can leave parents feeling out of the loop. When your children are

ready for a ride home or a practice, game or activity gets canceled, ensure you can be the first to know by keeping them connected with the OnePlus 11 5G powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform. It combines power with effortless elegance and is driven by extreme hardware with Dolby Atmos Speakers, Dolby Vision, 80W SUPERVOOC Charging and 3rd Gen Hasselblad Camera for Mobile.

Back-to-School Stress

Five savvy tips for a smooth transition

Balancing schedules, supplies shopping, meal planning and more can make the back-to-school season one of the most hectic times of the year. Keeping stress at bay may be a little easier when you put a plan in place the entire family can follow.

Remember, making the transition as smooth as possible requires a team effort. Help make a new academic year easier on your little ones (and yourself) with these hacks.

Start your routines

Getting your kids into their school day routines may be a massive undertaking, but it’s often helpful to start weeks before the first bell rings. Set those alarms and encourage kiddos to treat each morning as if they’re going to class. In the evenings, practice prepping backpacks and outfits just as you would during the school year, and ensure children are going to sleep at

the times they should on school nights.

Simplify school lunches

Prepping lunchboxes to send to school doesn’t need to be a time-consuming affair. In fact, it can be one of the easiest parts of your routine with prepackaged options that help make packing lunches a breeze. Seek out solutions that help simplify the process like Kemps smooth cottage cheese, a firstof-its-kind snack for kids made with 4% whole milk and blended with real fruit to create a smooth and creamy texture without the curds. Available in four-packs of 4-ounce cups in fun flavors like mixed berry, strawberry and strawberry banana, it’s a healthy, convenient and versatile solution with probiotics and no high-fructose corn syrup. Plus, it’s high in protein to keep kids feeling full and focused throughout the school day.

Prep the night before

Stressful mornings can lead to less produc-

tive days. Instead, simplify mornings as much as possible by packing backpacks, prepping lunches and planning outfits in the evenings to save yourself time once that alarm goes off. Plus, you may be less likely to forget essentials like homework assignments or permission slips when you’re not in a rush.

Serve nutritional after-school snacks

Skip the temptation to stock the pantry with sugary grab-and-go treats. Instead, encourage good nutritional choices for your children after a day of learning by offering them healthier snacking solutions. For example, pairing cottage cheese with crackers or fresh fruit provides a protein punch without the added sugar of less healthy snack choices to keep little tummies full until it’s time for a family meal.

Create a family calendar

The school year certainly isn’t the only time that calendars feel like they’re bursting at the seams, but the addition of after-school activities, field trips, parent-teacher conferences and more can be overwhelming if you’re not prepared. Find a scheduling solution that works for your family, whether it’s a dry-erase board in a mudroom or magnetic calendar on the fridge. Stay on top of upcoming events and activities by sitting down together once a week (or more) to write down everyone’s commitments and track important dates.

Strides Yet to be Made

Tour shows Pasadena’s progress in addressing homelessness

Over the past 10 years, Pasadena has reduced the rate of homelessness by 50%. In the next five years, Dr. Anthony Manousos of Making Housing and Community Happen would like to see that rate reduced to 100%.

On July 15, MHCH hosted an affordable housing bus tour, during which city officials toured affordable housing communities throughout Pasadena, including Marv’s Place, Salvation Army Hope Center, The Concord Apartments, Westgate Apartments, Homes for Life, Orange Grove Gardens, Summit Grove, Hudson Oaks, Centennial Place, Heritage Square North Fair Oaks, Heritage Square South

and Fair Oaks Court.

The tour featured a wide swath of affordable and supportive housing, serving formerly unhoused people, those with mental illness, and seniors.

In the past, the organization has conducted affordable housing bus tours, with many participants becoming “champions of affordable housing,” Manousos said.

Elected officials from eight cities were represented on this year’s tour. MHCM sent 156 invitations to officials throughout the San Gabriel Valley to see firsthand the benefits of affordable and supportive housing.

Manousos and his wife, Dr. Jill Shook, cofounded MHCH, a faith-based nonprofit tackling the housing crisis through edu-

cation, advocacy, organizing and advisement, working with community members and local government to end homelessness and stabilize the cost of housing.

For over 20 years, Shook has been involved with affordable housing in the Pasadena area, beginning with the Greater Pasadena Affordable Housing Group, a grassroots organization dedicated to increasing access to housing. United by their shared passion for housing equity, the couple began MHCH four years ago. Although they employ four part-time employees, neither Shook nor Manousos take a salary.

The faith-based organization works closely with church leaders interested in building affordable housing on their underutilized campuses. Through a grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, MHCH’s Congregational Land Committee has provided free feasibility studies to 70 churches.

The Salvation Army Hope Center, a stop on the tour, is one such religious institution using its land for accessible housing, creating a 65-unit permanent supportive housing apartment complex for adults experiencing homelessness.

A new California bill, Senate Bill 4, is undergoing the legislative process and, if passed, would streamline the process for churches to create affordable housing, bypassing current zoning restrictions.

“So many (churches) want to (build housing) because they’re on the verge of closing,” Manousos said. “Some of them are struggling and want to be a benefit to the community, but zoning stands in their way.”

Marv’s Place, the tour’s first stop, is a 20-unit Mediterranean-style building that houses formerly homeless families and provides onsite supportive services to help tenants end the cycle of homelessness and lead stable, productive lives.

“Many families were still struggling to survive when they moved into Marv’s Place,” Manousos noted. “Now that most of them are employed full time, and many of them have completed college degrees. It’s transformed their lives.”

The tour also focused on homeownership and visited Summer Grove, run by Heritage Housing Partners, a nonprofit dedicated to providing long-term affordable homeownership opportunities for moderate and low-income tenants.

Seniors make up the fastest-growing population of unhoused people, with many living on fixed incomes, unable to keep up with spiking housing rates. Another stop on the tour, Heritage Square North Fair Oaks provides housing to low-income seniors.

Nearby, a similar housing complex, Heritage Square South, is under construction and will include 69 units for seniors experiencing homelessness and supportive services. MHCH was a staunch advo-

cate for the project and led a nine-month campaign to persuade the Pasadena City Council to build housing on the cityowned property.

Another stop, Westgate Apartments was initially built as luxury apartments. Shook and the MHCH team partnered with the developer to set aside 20% of the units as inclusionary housing, which requires any new development to set aside a percentage of units for affordable housing. Developers who exceed the requirement receive a density bonus, allowing them to add more units. The complex has 89 affordable units.

Manousos wants to educate those who might be “skeptical” or others who may not know the variety of affordable housing available. Attendees will leave the tour informed of the plethora of affordable housing programs to become advocates and policymakers for affordable housing.

“People living on the street are our neighbors,” Manousos said. “They are just like us. They need to be treated with dignity and respect, and they need to be housed.”

“We are very proud of our city and what we’ve accomplished,” Manousos said. While there is still much to be done, Pasa-

dena has done more to champion affordable housing than other cities in the San Gabriel Valley, Manousos explained.

“The reason (Pasadena) has been effective is that we have a wonderful coalition of churches, homeless service providers and advocates in our city council, which has been really open,” Manousos added. “Although,

sometimes, they need to be prodded.”

Nearby in an unincorporated area between La Verne and San Dimas, two affordable housing developers, National

Core and The Affordable Housing Group, sought to build supportive housing for seniors experiencing homelessness.

The project garnered pushback from neighbors and the city council and was an inspiration to do the bus tour, Manousos explained.

“We’re hoping that some of those elected officials will come to Pasadena and see that these projects are not a threat and benefit neighborhoods. Many cities don’t see that yet, and that’s why I see Pasadena as a model.”

There are still 557 unhoused people living in Pasadena and roughly 700 students in the Pasadena Unified School District who are considered homeless. At Pasadena City College, approximately 10 to 20% of its students have or will experience homelessness.

“If we have the political will and can organize enough people to do what it will take, we can end homelessness in Pasadena,” Manousos concluded. “Wouldn’t that be amazing?”

Every Drop Counts

Water-wise landscaping and design takes creativity

Having an eco-friendly yard doesn’t have to mean replacing a lawn with sand and succulents. Ann-Marie Benz, California Native Plant Society’s horticulture program manager, says creating a drought-resilient landscape has a bad reputation. Creating a native, water-wise yard can be rewarding — and done with a personal flair.

“The reality is California is a stunningly beautiful place, and we are harnessing the beauty of California by being smart about water, maintenance, and having something different than what everyone else has,” Benz said.

“In a really beautiful way, (a water-wise landscape) is so much better than having a standard lawn if you want to have the new version of an attractive landscape.”

The greatest barrier to creating an eco-friendly yard for many people is in-

spiration and creativity. Many believe their only option is a desert scape. She said to look at other yards and attend local garden tours to see what kinds of wa-

tion advocacy group.

In Pasadena, residential and commercial customers are eligible for $2 per square foot for replacing grass with drought-tolerant and native plants, retrofitting to a drip/efficient irrigation system and capturing rainwater through their Turf Transformation Rebate Program. The city of Pasadena also offers a step-by-step guide to water-smart landscaping, design ideas, workshops, and free resources for residents looking to convert their lawns.

“I think the best stories are the ones where somebody has just planted in a new native garden and they start seeing butterflies and birds coming into their yard,” Benz said. “(I love) sitting out and having coffee and watching your landscape be alive.”

ter-wise landscaping others have created.

“If you don’t want something that’s the rock and plant look, you can have your English garden look,” Benz explained. “You can have a very modernistic look with big grasses. You can have a really comfortable play area or a native plant food garden. There are all kinds of looks you can get, but sometimes it takes looking around to get an idea of how beautiful they can be.”

Second to inspiration, Benz said another challenge many people face is planting at the wrong time of year. Summer is too hot, she says, and redesigning your landscaping in July won’t give plants a chance to grow. “Summer is planning time, and fall is planting time,” Benz said.

Knowing where to find the appropriate plants is also an advantage. Benz said that many native plants aren’t typically available at big box stores, but local nurseries will know what to look for and how to care for a water-wise yard in their area. Often, homeowners can help offset the cost of purchasing plants at nurseries with local rebate programs.

“Learn how to take advantage of the rebates in your area. I can’t stress how important that will be to make it easier. There are some areas that even offer some rebates for design services to assist with that,” said Ashley Williams, press secretary for Save Our Water, a water conserva-

One of the greatest benefits of planting water-wise plants is that they are often native types of flora. Benz said that with climate change creating more acreage of native habitat will be important in the future to preserving biodiversity.

“If every standard lawn in our country was converted, we would get about the space of the national parks. Native plants co-evolved with the animals and pollinators that are there, so some pollinators are only reliant on one or two species,” Benz said. “By putting in these low water, native plant gardens, you are literally saving species and contributing to these bigger factors around biodiversity and habitat.”

Williams agreed, saying that having a water-wise yard can be one of the most significant ways a household can reduce their water intake, with 60% of a household’s water used for landscaping.

“Without action, our climate experts believe that weather could diminish California’s water supply by up to 10% by 2040,” Williams said. “So doing things like replacing your lawn with water-resilient plants can save anywhere between 30 to 100 gallons every time you water. So there are such large implications for our water supply. Over time, doing things like your transformations can have a huge effect and impact on and are important for us to consider in our journey through making water conservation a way of life.”

Fresh Take on Summer

Agnes Restaurant & Cheesery unveils new menu

In two years, the husband-and-wife team of chefs Thomas and Vanessa Ti-

laka Kalb have successfully established their restaurant and cheesery Agnes as a casually elegant and reliably satisfying neighborhood fixture on their lovely tree-shaded stretch of Green Street.

To date, the menu has been anchored by Kalb’s elevated takes on Midwestern comfort food, based on his upbringing in Iowa.

The latest twist at Agnes is the formal launch of a new summer menu, packed like a picnic basket, full of unexpected and delectable surprises. As Vanessa explained, the new menu planning has been in the works for several months and the

launch is timed strategically.

“We thought about it probably in the springtime, as another relaunch of the menu. It’s also right around our anniversary. We celebrated two years on June 1,” she noted.

The menu changes reflect the season, but the process allowed for a needed infusion of creativity in the kitchen.

“We always try to revisualize ourselves and reinvigorate our roles and our desire to be creative,” she said.

“Thomas is very creative. This is a great way to engage the chefs. To ask them, ‘What did you grow up eating? What did your mom or grandma make that is comforting and nostalgic to you?’”

Culling inspirations from their staff also

might be in
or mothering journey, we strive to provide expert compassionate care for your unique needs.

speaks to the working culture the Kalbs have created at Agnes. A sense of esprit de corps pervades the service at Agnes, as well as the kitchen.

“We wanted to engage (the staff) and allow them ownership and having a say in what’s included,” she said.

“If we want other people to grow, we want them to have a say and a feel (for the menu). It can’t just be the foods that Thomas grew up eating or what his grandma made. We want to know what our staff is excited (about) and interested in.”

Vanessa expanded on her own experience growing up in a Thai family in Montebello, as an example. “I’m Thai. My mom didn’t make anything American, other than Stouffer oven dinners,” she said.

“She made the Stouffer’s mac and cheese. It’s not something my mom made but it was consistently good. Even now if I go home and I need something, I’ll make a box of mac and cheese. It’s funny to admit as a cheesemonger that I’m not grating my own four mixed cheeses.

“Boxed mac and cheese is comforting. That’s why Marcel added the pimento mac and cheese to the menu.”

Agnes’ chef de cuisine Marcel Moore, joined the staff at Agnes initially as an extern while studying at the nearby Institute of Culinary Education (ICE).

His novel and tasty fresh take on mac and cheese, using southern-style housemade pimento cheese appears as a side dish on the “Pachamama Picnic Platter,” a kaleidoscopic tour of pork preparations using pork sourced exclusively from Pachamama Farm in Days Creek, Oregon.

Known for its free-range and organical-

ly fed heritage breeds, Pachamama has partnered with Agnes since the opening of the restaurant.

“We had a rendition of this pork picnic platter last year and we wanted to bring it back as a ‘greatest hits’ of the Pachamama pork products,” Vanessa noted.

Suitable for a tasting party of four, the platter includes grilled and lacquered pork belly strips, jalapeno cheddarwurst and a deep-braised mojo pork shoulder. Served with the bacon-flecked pimento mac and cheese, a refreshing marinated pea salad and mini-cornbread muffins, the platter promises to be a primer on the pure pleasures of pork.

The new menu expands the focus of the Agnes experience, as Thomas mused,

“We’re zooming out from our Midwestern vibe to more Americana comfort food, including a tribute to the New York deli,” he said. The latter source of inspiration is reflected in two new menu items.

Joining the Agnes “Snackadoos” menu section is a sophisticated take on the bagel with lox. “Briar Rose Fromage Blanc” features the titular creamed white cheese served with trout gravlax, capers and dill.

Wherever
your health, fertility,

Everything-spiced housemade, grilled flatbread served warm, stands in for the bagel here.

The menu’s pasta section is now supplemented with “Reuben Raviolo.” This novel dish starts with a triple grind of seasoned corned beef and a sauerkraut soubise with Old Witch cheese and caraway seeds. This artisanal mixture is stuffed into generous, housemade ravioli and served with tartly fresh cornichons and mustard cream. It’s a Reuben sandwich transformed into a new pasta dish.

The sleeper hit on the new menu is the “Cheezy Stuffed Pepper.” It’s also the new go-to for Agnes enthusiasts with a vegetarian bent. Engorged with risotto, Essex St. feta cheese, and Carolina “caviar,” the groaning oven-roasted pepper is served in a shallow pool of fresh corn chowder and drizzled with spicy cilantro crema. It’s a seemingly simple dish with surprising depth and complexity.

Dessert? House-swirled soft serve ice cream is back with a range of toppings including: a chocolate shell, raspberry jam, cookie or cornbread crumble and salted caramel.

In addition to these exciting new menu

inspirations at the restaurant, remember Agnes is also a “cheesery” of note. As cheesemonger, Vanessa has been teaching a Cheese 101 class twice a month and recently began adding new classes and tastings as well.

“I’m changing gears personally to do more community outreach and engage more in tastings. So, we’re doing a tasting

every third Saturday of the month, from 2 to 4 p.m. We are featuring a couple of cheeses here and there. Last month we had

some Italian wines, so I featured Italian cheeses. The other class is something fun like: ‘Old World versus New World’ or ‘The Geography of Taste,’ (which) is the next one coming up. During the summertime, it’s just something to do when you’re in Pasadena,” she explained.

“It’s something different, where people can learn other aspects of cheese, but there’s always a 101 for anyone who’s just curious about cheese. We also launched a quarterly cheese club box in May. The next one will come out in August and then again in November,” she noted. Full details on the classes, tastings and cheese club are available on the Agnes website and Instagram.

Now that the weather is finally settling into more reliably consistent summer heat, the expansive, cool and sedate backyard patio at Agnes provides the perfect setting for an elevated and luxurious summertime picnic. There’s fresh summer fun at Agnes.

‘Decades in the Making’

Jodi Miller brings first comedy special to Ice House

Within the storied walls of beloved Pasadena comedy club

The Ice House, standup performer Jodi Miller will tape her first special, “Decades in the Making.” Held Friday, July 21, the show will stand as a culmination of Miller’s experiences and memories, from her personal life to her career.

Alongside her standup performances, Miller is an on-camera talent and head writer for the game show “Funny You Should Ask” and the host of TV show “The World’s Funniest Weather.” She performed on the ninth season of “America’s Got Talent” and has appeared on Comedy Central, GSN, NBC, Syfy, The Tonight Show and TRU TV. Miller is also a writer on the Cinemax series “Co-Ed Confidential” and author of the “WTF?” book series.

Though she has become a familiar face at venues like The Comedy Store, Laugh Factory and The Ice House, standup comedy was a path that Miller initially resisted.

“I didn’t want to be a comedian,” she said. “I was an actor. I was in New York, because I’m from Jersey originally, and I had done very small, little bit parts on soaps and stuff like that. And I really wanted to further my acting career.

“I was taking classes in New York and one of the schools I was affiliated with had a studio out here in LA, so I came out to LA for a week long of intensives where you do dramatic monologues and comedic monologues.”

Miller was 24 when a producer for whom she auditioned asked if she had performed standup comedy or improv and encouraged her to “see where that takes you.” Her plan marked a return to New York to perform as a comedian and take a comedy class before going back to LA to find work with the producer.

Ahead of her first show at Standup New York, she began to understand why “public speaking is the No. 1 fear in humans; death is No. 2.” She felt an immense pressure to impress the crowd.

“I just remember being in the bathroom,

like, ‘What did I do?’ I could sing on stage, no problem. I could act, but telling jokes, being yourself, … ‘Oh my god, no.’ But I did it, and I believe the comedy Gods bless you the first time you do it because it was great.

“Afterward somebody came up to me and they were like, ‘I run a show called Don’t Tell Mama in Midtown, I’d love to book you next week.’ I was like, ‘Oh no, I only had to do this once for a guy in LA. I’m not a comic.’ She’s like, ‘OK, I’ll see you Thursday.’ And that was it. That was over 26 years ago, and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

Despite officially changing her title from “an actor who does comedy” to “a comedian who can act,” Miller described herself as

a “performer” above all else. Whether she’s acting, singing, hosting or presenting, she said her love for the stage is renewed every time she can bring a smile to someone’s face or a tear to their eye.

“Your words have power,” she said. “I remember when I was in college, a friend of mine passed away. I was a senior in college and it was a winter vacation. He got into a car accident, and he died. I was working at the paper at the time at my university and I wrote this long story. … It was my own healing process about how we met freshman year and … we stayed really good friends. It was just a really sweet story that had some humor in it.

“I remember walking through campus when it came out the next day and people

were crying. People that maybe didn’t know him because it was a big school, were crying. … It had the power to move them and hopefully get to know him a little bit in the way that I knew him.”

Miller’s career as a performer has since taken her across the country, including four military tours with an overseas trip to visit U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. She described her experiences in Kandahar and Camp Leatherneck in the Helmand province as eye-opening.

“When you travel around the country and you perform for people, they’re grateful,” Miller said. “When you go to Afghanistan, I quickly learned it wasn’t even about the material. … They wanted a piece of home, but they also needed a laugh and needed that connection. And it was brutal. It was in the summer. It was 125 degrees. … (But) everybody was just so generous and loving and kind.”

Throughout her life, Miller has witnessed and felt the therapeutic abilities of humor. From working part time with an addiction recovery program to teaching standup comedy for 14 years — including classes with veterans and middle school students — she has found everyone has a story and sharing it can open new pathways for healing. Miller said that it’s been some of the most rewarding work she’s done.

“Taking something that’s traumatic, talking about it and adding humor to it removes some of the power,” she said. “That’s why they tell you to talk about your feelings, but a lot of people can’t, especially if they’re so locked in their head and they have so many walls up because they don’t want to lose their (mind).

“The great thing about comedy is that it stems from real life experiences, and that’s why they say comedy is cheaper than therapy. My favorite saying is, ‘You can spend 10 years on the couch or 10 minutes on stage.’ And that is so true.”

Miller said she has talked on stage about some of the most difficult moments of her life, like her mother’s death, to the most fulfilling, like becoming a mother. These experiences are threaded throughout her

A Season of Change

Walden is reimagining its musical direction

Denver-based indie rockers Walden are in for a change in 2023.

Since its tour with “Bayou Soul” artist Marc Broussard, Walden has re-imagined its sound and the musicians moved from Nashville to Denver.

“Denver appealed to us for various lifestyle reasons,” said vocalist/pianist Eric Hangartner.

“There has been a lot of change. Recently, we’ve been doing a lot of sonic exploration — the sound, look and feel. We’re trying to hone in on what exactly we want to sound and feel like.”

Walden is returning to LA for its first headline show since its 2021 tour. The Saturday, July 22, concert at Makeout Music is hosted by Mad Lettuce Management.

“We, as a band, have been doing a lot of thinking recently about the direction we want to take from here,” Hangartner said.

“We’re starting to reinvent the way we approach the show and the songs and the project in general. People at the show are definitely going to hear new music and just get an overall new experience from the band as we start to take things in a new direction.”

Hangartner said the band is taking more risks musically but isn’t quite sure about the direction past that.

“We’re not afraid to follow whatever excites us,” he added. “I think part of the fun is we don’t know where that is. It’s exciting to follow that path. It’s definitely an exciting time.”

As a sneak peek, Walden released the single “Taking It Slow,” which marks a “new sonic direction” for the band. It started as a collaboration between vocalist/guitarist Richard Becker and drummer/background vocalist Andrew Mendel. (The band also includes bassist Jamie de Lange.)

“We had a fun time exploring a new sonic palate for that song,” he added. “It’s

something that sounds fresh but very much sounds like a Walden song. We’re very excited about the single and getting on the road to share it.”

Part of that trip includes the LA show. Mad Lettuce Management is the company founded by Walden’s manager Matt Ladis.

“Mad Lettuce is the 27-year manifestation of me as a person,” Ladis said.

“I grew up as a musician but learned in my high school days that I was way better at the people side of things and not the artist side of things. Live music is my religion in a lot of way.

It’s the closest thing to a religious experience. I’ve always had a passion for it, and I find ways to engulf myself in it.”

Dodgers’ History

Hershiser honors 1988 season anniversary

It was a season for the ages. Even if it looks like Orel Hershiser hasn’t aged in 35 years.

As the Dodgers enjoy the anniversary of their 1988 season a campaign 35 years ago in which Hershiser broke records, won awards, and was standing on the mound when the final World Series out was recorded in winning fashion the Bulldog is still a daily fixture at Dodger games as a club broadcaster.

And the lore of the Bulldog still lives on in infamy at his home. Sort of.

“When my wife and I are in a discussion, she says, ‘Don’t bring the Bulldog out.’ And I’m like, ‘Don’t make me take the trash out.’”

Yes, even World Series MVPs have to take out the garbage.

The World Series MVP was just won of the many high-profile trophies accumulated by Hershiser, famously nicknamed Bulldog by manager Tommy Lasorda. He won the Cy Young Award, the NLCS Award and he even earned that year’s Gold Glove Award.

But for Orel Leonard Hershiser IV, it was all about the team.

“It was a great team that never said die. We were a team of misfits. Fred Claire made a great move before the ’88 season. We got Kirk Gibson in second look free agency. We traded Bobby Welch to get Alfredo Griffin. (We) added Jay Howell and it was a feisty team. Add guys like Mickey Hatcher and Rick Dempsey and all Fred, who was getting beat up in the media, wanted to do was bring back guys who were tough and wanted to win.”

Bulldog was the nickname Lasorda bestowed on Hershiser. He told the modest right-hander with boyish looks, glasses and a mild-mannered personality to fight like a bulldog, to attack hitters like a bulldog.

Furthermore, Lasorda told him he didn’t like the name Orel. But the affable skipper loved how the 1988 National League Champions and winner of 94 games completed the regular season, with Hershiser leading the way.

Topping the senior circuit in wins with 23, the New York native made a lot of history for Los Angeles’ team in the process. On Sept. 28 of that season, he broke Don Drysdale’s remarkable record of 59 consecutive innings of not allowing an earned run. The record dated back to 1968, and ironically Drysdale called the streak as the team’s radio announcer.

As Hershiser’s historic regular season came to an end, he carried that momentum and success into the playoffs. In Game 1 of the NCLS, he started and pitched eight more scoreless innings against the mighty New York Mets.

The series went all seven games. Hershiser was the MVP, excelling as a starter AND reliever, even garnering a save, and was on the mound for the final out in his inspirational game seven shutout at Dodger Stadium.

“Hershiser did something that we may never see again in our lifetime,” said Lasorda in a past interview on Spectrum Sportsnet LA. “First of all, to break Don Drysdale’s record, which I always thought was unreachable, (and) then to see what he did from the middle of August through the playoffs, through the World Series where he pitched a total of 109 innings and 105 of them were scoreless.”

As the Dodgers were winning playoff games, their high-profile acquisition from the previous off-season was hobbling. Hershiser of course won league’s top individual award in the pitching category, but Gibson the eventual winner of the league’s MVP that same year was battling a left hamstring injury and a right knee injury.

Down by a run in the ninth inning of Game 1 of the World Series, Gibson was a last second, surprise pinch-hitter.

Oh, the drama at Chavez Ravine.

After Gibson lifted Dennis Eckersley’s infamous 3-2 backdoor slider into the right field pavilion, Lasorda called it the most memorable moment of his life.

“It was one of the great moments in the history of the Dodgers, no question about

NOTICE OF PETITION

TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF JONNIE L. KIMMONS aka JONNIE L. WESS

Case No. 23STPB06935

To all heirs, beneficiar ies, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of JONNIE L. KIMMONS aka JONNIE L. WESS

A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by Jon Freeman, Stonecrest Acquisition in the Superior Court of California, County of LOS ANGELES.

THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that Lorenzo Stoller, Esq. be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent.

THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administra tion of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority.

A HEARING on the petition will be held on August 1, 2023 at 8:30 AM in Dept. No. 29 located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.

IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney.

IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined

in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code.

Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law.

YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk.

BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO

PROPERTY OWNER:

The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPO STING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 111365-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify post-

ponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO

TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code.

If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 111365-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee.

Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale.

If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. FOR
