Sugar
Can’t get enough of the sweet stuff
By Ellen Snortland Pasadena Weekly ColumnistTwo weeks ago, there was a stir when the World Health Organization (WHO) announced: “Sugar Is Tied to Obesity, Alzheimer’s, Cancer and Heart Disease.” Really? No. That headline would have a lot more integrity than the vague announcement made by WHO about aspartame, per the New York Times headline: “Aspartame Is a Possible Cause of Cancer in Humans, a WHO Agency Says.”
Since when does good science include the word “possibly?” Since the sugar industry waged an allout war on artificial sweeteners and fought tooth and nail to keep the sugar junkies addicted, that’s when.
“I have abstained from sugar for 10 years,” my friend said.
“How is that even possible?” I asked. We were having lunch at Green Street, a lovely restaurant in Pasadena. She had just declined its massively popular zucchini bread … which is chock full of the white granular stuff. “I can’t stop eating sugar,” I said. “I feel like a slave. I also can’t continue gaining weight as I do.”
I had reached well over 200 pounds; that, combined with my short frame, made me look like a fjord pony — petite yet large at the same time. That’s good for pulling a plow through virtually non-arable land full of Norwegian rocks, but not so good for jeans.
Thus began my journey with a food program. Instead of an alcohol addiction, I was a compulsive eater. I couldn’t (or wouldn’t) listen to my body when it said, “Enough!” I wanted more, and more and more. I would tell myself, “I’ll just slice off a tiny bit of this pan of cake,” and within a short time, it’d be gone.
I experienced satiation with half a plate of pasta, but I’d wolf down the whole thing anyway. I was out of control! If I substituted the word “food” for alcohol, I could entirely relate. I was damaging my body and my emotions through overeating. And while I certainly abused sugar-laden foods, my siren songs were crispy, crunchy, salty and melty items that I couldn’t get enough of.
Before you say, “I can relate, too,” maybe you can, but I’ll warn you: do not pretend to know what it’s like for an alcoholic or a food “addict.” We’ve heard it all. There’s a very good reason that alcoholics can only listen to other alcoholics. Normal drinkers say, “Hey, when you’ve had enough, don’t
•LETTERS TO THE EDITOR•
Support DRUG Act
Editor:
Like many elderly patients, my grandmother suffers from arthritis. Watching her journey has made me much more aware of the issues patients face on a routine basis. It has been incredibly frustrating to see out-of-pocket costs continue to rise, and even more frustrating to know greedy middlemen are one of the main reasons.
Pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) work as the intermediary between drug manufacturers and insurance companies to negotiate deals on the price of medications. Unfortunately, they use their position to prioritize their own gains. PBMs profit based on the price of a medication and have
have another one.” Brilliant! It’s not like alcoholics haven’t thought of that. There’s a drive to deaden, to numb deep-seated, negative feelings that override any reasonable relationship with food or alcohol.
Once I committed to abstaining from sugar and processed foods, after a week of profound crabbiness and discomfort, I started to feel better. My next physical showed that my cholesterol counts were extremely low. My acid reflux subsided, and eventually, I dropped 80 pounds!
I read “Pure, White and Deadly,” by John Yudkin, a 1972 book so potent that the sugar industry systematically destroyed the author. Yudkin, a quietly thoughtful and respected chemist and scholar in the U.K., was discredited, hounded out of his positions and made unable to raise money for grants. His sin was taking on the behemoth sugar industry, which is — make no mistake about it — as nasty as the tobacco industry. There are now more sugar addicts than tobacco addicts. Over the decades, any attempts to throw sunshine on the sugar lobbies results in phony diversions. “Hey! Look over there! It’s fat that’s the problem! No, over there, it’s eggs! No, it’s artificial sweeteners!” They will do anything and go to any lengths to keep people hooked on corn syrup, cane sugar, honey, etc.
I am adamant about this, and I invite you to read “Pure, White and Deadly” for yourself. It’s out of print, but a PDF is out there. Google “anti-sugar advocates,” and you’ll see a boatload of paid-off scientists that have trash-talked stellar people like Dr. Robert Lustig or even the New York Times’ sugar opponent Gary Taubes. They also tried to bury the 2015 documentary “Sugar Coated,” but that’s still available so far. The sugar industry will do anything to shame and blame, or in the case of John Yudkin, bury him under the white sparkly stuff. It’s not an accident that the sugar industry was started on the backs of enslaved people. Many of us are still enslaved by sugar.

a vested interest in ensuring patients use medications that fit their agenda. Seniors are one of the most vulnerable populations in our country, and they depend on their medications to treat their needs. The fact that PBMs use this dependency as a way to exploit patients and increase their bottom line is not just unethical — it is harmful.
Thankfully, the DRUG Act seeks to address this conflict of interest and have PBMs earn a flat fee for their services, instead of earning money based on the price of a treatment. If enacted, this legislation could save patients tremendous amounts of money, and save them from lots of frustration at the pharmacy counter. I hope our lawmakers support this bill in Washington, D.C.

Rental Housing Board increases consulting contract
The Pasadena Rental Housing Board voted unanimously to expand its contract with BHYV Consulting from $74,999 to
$425,000. The reason for the increase was so that the consulting firm could provide more services to the board as it becomes more established.
The initial contract required BHYV to assist in program development, budget drafting and creating regulations for hearings and counseling services. The expanded contract extends BHYV’s services, so it can assist the board with establishing a rental registry and managing counseling services and public information requests; it will also require BHYV to create an initial staffing plan and budget.
“These are steps we have to take because we are literally embarking upon a project to either start a new organization or possibly a brand-new department in our city,” Vice Chair Brandon Lamar said. “And these are the steps we have to take in order for us to lay a foundation to do so.”
The contract with BHYV will be effective through July 26, 2024.

According to the foundation’s incumbent president, Don Schweitzer, the foundation has a history of making “significant contributions” to the school, including millions of dollars in scholarships and campus improvements.
Pearson House in Altadena named a county historic landmark
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to designate the Pearson House as a Los Angeles County Historic Landmark. The house is located at 931 New York Drive in Altadena and is a two-story family residence first built in 1907.
PCC Foundation president-elect Robert Miller resigns
Robert Miller, president-elect of the Pasadena City College Foundation, resigned from his position on July 25. His reasoning was a lack of cooperation and trust between the foundation and the school’s board of trustees.
“Having listened to the July 19, 2023, Pasadena Area Community College District Board of Trustees meeting, I have decided to resign,” wrote Miller in his letter of resignation. “I believe (in -
“The Pearson House is not just a house — it is a representation of the rich architectural heritage of Altadena,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “By designating it as a Los Angeles County Landmark, we will make sure this beautiful home remains protected and preserved for generations to come.”
The nomination of the 116-year-old home was completed by the property owner, Alanna Quan. The landmark’s name, Pearson House, was selected to honor the original property owner, a local journalist named Alvick Pearson.

Jewish Federation honors Rep. Judy Chu at Pasadena temple
By Morgan Owen Pasadena Weekly Managing EditorIt was 1940 in Marseille. France had just fallen to Germany, and Jewish refugees were desperate for visas. Reports began coming in from U.S. diplomats that Nazis were transporting Jews to concentration camps. But orders from above prevented the U.S. consulates from issuing letters of transit because immigration quotas were full.
That order didn’t sit well with Hiram Bingham IV, a U.S. vice consul in Marseille. Defying his superiors, Bingham falsified visas, safe passes and letters of transit to Jewish refugees to save them from internment. He even went so far as to visit the Les Milles French concentration camp to facilitate the release of internees for emigration.
In 1942, Bingham was transferred to the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires, but not before he had rescued hundreds of Jewish children and thousands of adults by issuing falsified visas. Of course, Bingham’s work did not stop when he arrived in Buenos Aires. After the war, he reported on Nazi war criminals fleeing to Argentina. Ultimately, Bingham resigned from service in protest against the State Department’s inaction.
It’s stories like this that the Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys will recognize in their celebration of Rep. Judy Chu for her work on the U.S. Rescue and Aid Individuals of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2023.
“Congresswoman Chu has been a huge supporter of our Jewish community ever since she took office. We are excited to have the opportunity to recognize her and thank her for something like (HR2296) in her local district,” said Jason Moss, the Jewish Federation’s executive director.
“The evening is not just going to be about honoring her, but also raising awareness of some of these individuals. You hear stories that there were people that stood up to the Nazis, but we don’t really study them — we don’t know who they are or recognize the sacrifices they made,” Moss added.
HR2296 was brought forward by Chu, along with Reps. Steve Cohen, Kim Schrier, Jamie Raskin and Josh Gottheimer to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day. The bill states that between 1933 and 1945, several U.S. rescue and relief organizations, such as the War Refugee Board, were responsible for rescuing thousands of Jews and other refugees. Among those refugees were Albert Einstein, Henry Kissinger and Madeleine Albright.
Ironically, Moss said, there is another bill moving through Congress similar to HR2296 that focuses on honoring diplomats who risked their lives to help Jewish refugees. But this bill proposed by Chu, he said, is much broader in scope and honors regular Americans, which is closer to the Jewish Federation’s values and mission.
The bill is in committee, and if passed, it will award a collective Congressional Gold Medal to Americans who played an active role in aiding Jewish refugees during World War II. The award would honor not just famous individuals working with these organizations, such as Elenor Roosevelt and Henry Morgenthau Jr., but more hidden figures like Bingham.
“This historic legislation will, for the first time ever, give congressional recognition to the Americans who boldly took action to rescue Jews and refugees from almost certain death during the Holocaust,” said Chu when HR2296 was proposed in April. “As we face rising antisemitism and authoritarianism in the United States and across the world, part of our commitment to ‘never again’ must include honoring those who took action.”
Moss expressed a similar sentiment, stating his hope that this bill will fight misinformation and a lack of understanding about the Holocaust, which is also part of the Jewish Federation’s mission.
Moss recalled a study that 25% to 40% of high school students don’t truly understand what happened during the Jewish internment, even though World War II happened less than 80 years ago.
“The Jewish Federation has focused a lot in the last five or six years on raising awareness both of Holocaust canon and antisemitism. For the last five years, we have held a 25-hour Holocaust vigil on the steps of Pasadena City Hall to read the names of those that were murdered. … This (celebration) is a unique twist on that concept because it’s now recognizing the people that did whatever they could so there weren’t more than six million murdered.”
Moss applauded Chu for having the “initiative” to take this bill before Congress. He said he believes she co-sponsored the bill with no political motivations and because she is a “true friend to the Jewish community.”
Moss takes every opportunity to remind elected officials of the influence they have, and how they must set an example for others as Chu does. Moss said the Jewish Federation “is working to combat antisemitism locally by going to the 48 city councils we serve, asking each to pass a resolution denouncing antisemitism. Each time I speak to the councils, I remind them that, even though they are elected officials, they have an opportunity to use their voice.”
The event to honor Chu will take place on Sunday, Aug. 6, at the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center. Attendees will listen to stories and insights about the individuals honored by HR2668. Following the program, there will be a reception.

CatCon at Pasadena Convention Center celebrates feline pop culture
By Laura Latzko Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterBeing a cat lover is more than just owning a pet. For many people, it’s a lifestyle.
CatCon — set for Saturday, Aug. 5, and Sunday, Aug. 6, at the Pasadena Convention Center — blends cat education and pop culture in an interactive way.
This year, the event will have a Taylor Swift-themed cat art show, a CAT-GPT interactive AI experience, celebricat visits, workshops, cat-themed photo ops, a cat adoption village and exhibitors with products for cats and their owners.
With the convention and symposium, founder Susan Michals hopes to redefine perceptions of cat ownership and move
beyond the “dowdy cat lady” stereotype.
“We have been called ‘comic-con for cat people,’ but people have also called us ‘Disneyland for cat people,’” Michals said.
“It’s a place where you can come, have fun, learn and play and at the same time really become educated in the latest things about keeping your kitty happy and healthy.
“This is not a cat breeder show. It’s not the old-school cat lady show. This is the nouveau cat lady. This is the cool Taylor Swift persona that really permeates our society more and more in terms of pet ownership.”
Michals previously worked for E! Entertainment, during which time she devel-
oped the idea for CatCon.
An author, filmmaker and journalist, she has also written for The Wall Street Journal, The Art Economist, Vanity Fair and HuffPost.
She founded CatCon in 2015. She also has another event called Cat Art Show, which started in 2014.
Michals said that although CatCon is helping to change perceptions, there are still some stereotypes about cat owners.
“Is there still that negative perception? Absolutely. All the time. When I meet people and I say I run a cat convention, the first question is, ‘How many cats do you have?’” said Michals, who has a dog and an 18-year-old cat at home.
CatCon offers different experiences for cat lovers. The pop-up “Karma is a Cat Art Show” pays homage Swift’s three cats.
“She’s really a representative of cat-lady cool and an icon in terms of a cat mom. We have had about six artists do their interpretations of her cats,” Michals said.
During the event, guests can take photos at a Lisa Frank-inspired unicorn/cat “Caticorn” wall.
As part of the AI experience, cat owners can create artwork of their cats. They will also be able to try out the Cat-GPT live texting platform, which allows them to text their cats.
The event will also have interactive games, such as Plinko. About 200 exhibitors will have products and services for cats and their owners.
Michals said this year, the number and type of exhibitors has expanded to offer more to attendees.
“Every year, we try to up the ante and bring in more stuff to keep people engaged and excited at CatCon,” Michals said.
Michals said pet owners are interested in the latest natural food and pet tech products, including smart litter boxes and cat trackers. Preventative care and wellness products are also popular.
For example, American drug company Zoetis is hosting a panel discussion titled, “OA Pain: Get Your Cat Back to Normal & Fe-line Good” at 1:30 p.m. Saturday,
Aug 5, featuring a cat owner and a veterinarian.
They will also have a booth on site where pet parents can learn more about Solensia (frunevetmab injection), the only FDA-approved monoclonal antibody treatment for feline OA pain now available in the United States.
Michals said when curating the show, she looks at what will appeal to cat owners with different interests.
“We look at what they are interested in in pop culture, in the way that we live now, in pet parent lifestyle, in cat lifestyle,” Michals explained.
“They are as much looking up the latest piece of cat furniture as they are reading Popsugar, E! Online or the Daily Mail. They are looking just as much at what Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian might be doing as what’s the latest product to keep their kitty healthy.
So, we take all of that, and we throw it into a pot and determine what in a curatorial sense is going to make for an
amazing show.”
Michals said celebrity pet owners have helped to change the perception of cat ownership. Several celebrities are known for their love of cats, including Alison Brie and Dave Franco, Salma Hayek, Angela Kinsey, Margaret Cho, Ed Sheeran, Steve Martin, Drew Barrymore, Macaulay Culkin and Nicolas Cage.
“They are making them more prominent on their social media, which is helping to
dispel the negative perception and change the look and the attitude toward cat ownership,” Michals said.
This year, guests can interact and take photos with celebricats such as Adventure Cat Leo, Bowie the Siberian, the cats from Spongecake, Pancake Stickypaws, One Eared Uno and the cats from Don’t Stop Meowing.
Other influencers, advocates, comedians and correspondents in attendance are
Amber Maureen Lu, Two Crazy Cat Ladies, Nathan the Cat Lady, Grace Choi from Kitty Boy and Friends, Lambo Licia, Katie Beth Miedaner, Rhapsody Artajo and Vickie Fisher.
This year, the event will have giant ball pits, where guests can take photos with cat celebrities.
The cat photo ops are popular among followers. Michals said that last year, the celebricats in attendance did an average of 500 meet-and-greets with fans.
Workshops will focus on a range of topics, including cat genetics, feline osteoarthritis, the importance of veterinary care and personal journeys of cat rescuing and fostering.
Michals said over the years, people have become more invested in getting educated about their pets’ health and wellbeing. CatCon lets them learn in an immer-
sive and fun environment.
“We are seeing a huge influx of people who are recognizing their animals as their fur babies and not just their pets. They are part of the family,” Michals said.
Kitty correspondent Brittany High will lead cat trivia, and the Bob Baker Marionettes will perform a cat-themed puppet show.
During the event, Best Friends Animal Society will have around 200 cats and kittens available for adoption.
During the event’s history, there have been over 800 cat and kitten adoptions.
Each year, CatCon helps to give back to local animal charities. This year, a portion of ticket sales will go to Milo’s Sanctuary and Kitt Crusaders. Through parent company Ticket Out Inc., they have donated more than $350,000 to local organizations.

Honoring Anton Chekhov
South Pasadena Theatre Workshop recalls legend in repertory
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorThe South Pasadena Theatre Workshop is wrapping up its production of “The Chekhov Project,” which includes the plays “The Seagull” and “The Cherry Orchard.”
The workshop’s Sally Smythe, who runs it with her husband, Stephen Godwin, called the staging “historic.”
“I don’t know that repertory is being done much in the LA area,” said Smythe, about the system of play production in which a resident acting company keeps a repertory of plays that are always ready for performance.
“It’s nice to offer people a chance to see both plays. It’s easy to watch for people who don’t want to go to a three-hour Chekhov play. We have a very beautiful space.”
Smythe said the plays are directed as comedies as Chekhov intended and “the pace is brisk and entertaining without losing any of the pathos inherent in the material. They both come in at around two hours with a short intermission.”
“The Seagull” shares the romantic and artistic conflicts between four characters: the famous middlebrow story writer Boris Trigorin, the ingenue Nina, the fading actress Irina Arkadina, and her son the symbolist playwright Konstantin Treplev.
Meanwhile, “The Cherry Orchard,” often considered the Russian playwright’s last play. The play revolves around an aristocratic Russian landowner who returns to her family estate (which includes a large and well-known cherry orchard) just before it is auctioned to pay the mortgage. Unresponsive to offers to save the estate, she allows its sale to the son of a former serf; the family leaves to the sound of the cherry orchard being cut down.
Smythe said both productions aim to celebrate the philosophical power of Russian literature while spotlighting a local community of versatile actors in repertory fashion. Sydney Walsh directs the Los Angeles premiere of Dakin Matthew’s adaptation of
“The Seagull,” while Sam Cass directors Tom Stoppard’s adaptation of “The Cherry Orchard,” alongside, Kila Packett, as assistant director.
“The Seagull” cast is South Pasadena Theatre Workshop artistic director and co-founder, Smythe as Arkadina; Clay Wilcox as Sorin; Sam Cass as Treplev; Cordelia Dewdney as Nina; Andrew Tippie as Trigorin; Fiona Rose Dyer as Masha; Kila Packett as Shamrayev; Christina Conte as Paulina; Kevin Michael Moran as Dorn; and Nick Apostolina as Medvenko. Understudy for Nina is Alessandra Manon.
“The Cherry Orchard” cast sees Smythe as Ranevskaya; Lawrence Novikoff as Gaev; Michaela Ivey as Anya; Roshni Shulka as Varya; Hossein Mardani as Lopakhin; Moran as Piskchik; Anthony Adu as Trofimov; Ben Michaels as Yepikhodov, Lauren Vogel as Dunyasha; Apostolina as Yasha; Conte as Charlotta and Robert Cesario as Firs.
The couple landed the rights to Matthew’s “Seagull” while sitting with him at a ceremony offered by Juilliard’s Acting Company. Smythe’s longtime friend, Matthew offered them the rights to his Americanized version.
“Besides being a brilliant actor, he is a scholar and has written and translated several works as well as directed countless,” she said.
“We have known him and his wife since the late seventies, having acted with him and been directed by him. For ‘The Cherry Orchard,’ we are using the Tom Stoppard translation, which is quite lovely as well.”
Smythe said it was an easy decision to produce both plays.
“In the winter, we had a meeting about what might be the next project,” she said. “One of them brought up these plays. We had a reading around the table in one day of both plays. I provided a nice spread for everyone to have lunch in between.
“Right from that reading I knew I wanted to do both. I loved a lot of the actors who were sitting there. We still held auditions. We had 2,000 submissions. Actors love this work.”

Glendale nonprofit fetes 15th anniversary in new home, ace/121 Gallery
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorIn celebration of 15 years of service to the community, nonprofit Glendale Arts is holding a free Summer Soiree on Saturday, Aug. 5. The event will be held at the organization’s new location, ace/121 Gallery on Kentwood Street.
“We’re really looking forward to welcoming everybody in, connecting with them and saying hello to the space,” Glendale Arts CEO Nina Crowe said.
The Summer Soiree will offer guests a first glimpse into the 800-square-foot gallery space, accompanied by complimentary drinks, bites and live entertainment.
Guests can also sign up for Glendale Arts’ new membership program SCENE. It was founded to forge community between artists and audiences and offers members discounted pricing and pre-sale access from Glendale Arts and SCENE partners. They include Antaeus Theatre, Laemmle Theatres and the Museum of Neon Art. The first 50 attendees to sign up will get a SCENE T-shirt and swag bag.
“Directly outside of the gallery, there’s a beautiful lantern-lit paseo and we’ll be spilling out into that area where people can enjoy their drinks, their food, their socializing and their mingling,” Crowe said. “There’ll be a small program at 7 p.m. where our new board chair will welcome everybody, share a little bit about the journey we’ve been on and what we plan on doing, but it’s a very open house feel. … It is free to attend because we really want to celebrate this new home.”
Opened in 2017, ace/121 Gallery is a multidisciplinary venue located in the heart of Glendale. It has the capability to host year-round exhibits, live performances, workshops and other events. Crowe described the new location as a clean slate.
“It is a part of an artist colony, which is a live/work space that has more than 70 units, so it’s an extension of people’s homes in a sense,” she said. “Our plans include not only providing an opportunity for visual artists to exhibit, but also for there to be an intersection of multidisciplinary arts.”
Crowe said she foresees ace/121 becoming a home for performing and cinematic arts alongside visual and fine art exhibits, and a space that hosts events like corporate get-togethers, wine and sip nights, concerts
or masterclasses. The vision is to bring a plethora of industries and creatives into one space and encourage conversation and collaboration between them.
“We find ourselves in this really exciting point where we’ve been able to move forward and thrive in a new direction,” said Maria Sahakian, chief operating officer at Glendale Arts. “We’ve all experienced the magic of what can happen in an intimate venue. There are a lot of those types of experiences that we hope to create for the visitors, the audience, everyone who interacts with the space. We want them to walk away feeling transformed, like they just experienced something impactful.
“To be able to do that with everything from an exhibit that’s on display on the walls of the gallery to a performance or even a lecture, talk, workshop or any educational opportunity we want, it gives us a chance to create, program and produce our own opportunities to create impact for consumers of the arts and give artists of all backgrounds and walks of life … a space to make those experiences possible and to showcase their work to the audience we’ve developed and are continuing to develop.”
Glendale Arts is not a new player in the field of performing and cinematic arts, though, as it has operated as the managing organization of the Alex Theatre and held festivals like the Glendale International Film Festival and Open Arts and Music festival.
With the Glendale International Film Festival on the horizon, running from Thursday, Sept. 28, to Thursday, Oct. 5, Glendale Arts will unveil its roster of participating filmmakers at the Summer Soiree.
“We’ll be excited to talk about what
they can expect to see at the film festival and the following month,” Sahakian said. “At the end of the day, what we want to ensure is that the gallery is a destination where artists want to showcase their work and audiences can count on coming to experience meaningful and impactful art.”
Crowe said that Glendale Arts will look to partner with other organizations to better provide their audiences with resources like youth programs and artworks from a broader selection of artists. Crowe and Sahakian expressed hope that the organization can play an important role not only in Glendale and its surrounding communities, but the greater Los Angeles area as a hub for creative collaboration.
“A strong and vibrant arts scene is known to enhance the quality of life in a community,” Sahakian said. “Everyone’s collectively embraced and working on this mission to ensure that Glendale grows as a destination and as a place that is known for quality arts. We’ve been part of this journey ourselves for the last decade and a half, and now we’re going to be continuing this work through another lens and another dimension. The possibilities are truly, truly endless, and we’re excited to start exploring all of it.”

Ross Simonini shares his curiosity with the world
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorRoss Simonini is an artist in every sense of the word.
The Altadena resident pens songs, creates artwork and authors books. This month, he’s showcasing his artwork at Shrine, 538 N. Western Avenue, Los Angeles, through Saturday, Aug. 19
“Since I can remember, art has served as an engine for awe and wonder and curiosity,” said Simonini, who also runs ALICIA, a gallery and performance space on his property.
“One reason a lot of artists don’t tend to retire the way other professions do is because you get addicted to that kind of engagement.”
Simonini’s paintings evoke a blend of softness and delicacy, while conveying captivating expressions through figuration and narratives, it’s been said.
A Northern California native, Simonini has been painting with his hands and feet for several years. He said it’s interesting to create.
“That’s one thing that allows me to stay engaged,” he said about his methods.
“Every mark can be surprising. I would say the marks that I’m making with my feet are not as controlled. If control is your goal, then it would be frustrating. I don’t always think that control is the goal.”
The interdisciplinary artist is no stranger to exhibits. He has shown his work at the Sharjah Biennial 13 (United Arab Emirates), Anonymous Gallery (NYC), Et Al Gallery (San Francisco), Shoot the Lobster (Luxembourg), Jack Hanley Gallery (NYC) and Human Resources (LA).
Five years ago, he released his first novel, “The Book of Formation,” on Melville House Books. He is an interviewer at ArtReview and he served as the interviews editor at The Believer from 2007 to 2020. His essays have appeared in the New York Times, The Paris Review, Frieze, Mousse, among others.
write the music and collaboration is still very important to me.
“I work with people on every track. It’s more like a composer functions, where you’re working with people to express certain ideas that you have, rather than a band format, which I worked in for many years. I’m finding that really nice.”
He’s been doing this for about five years to work with friends and a variety of musicians. Simonini recently recorded with his neighbor, a flutist.
“I’ve been writing, basically, since I graduated from college when, I began writing in a professional way,” he said. “I have essentially been doing it since. I’m mostly focused on interviewing and essays, but I’ve also written a novel. I’m working on a longer nonfiction book now. I’m trying to explore the whole spectrum of writing.”
Simonini also shares his thoughts about art via the ArtReview podcast “Subject, Object, Verb.” He hosted SFMOMA’s “Raw Material” season 1 in 2017 and from 2015 to 2020, he produced The Organist, a collaborative audio experiment between McSweeney’s and KCRW.

A member of Trespassers William and NewVillager, Simonini is releasing new music, once a month, on the new moon.
“I was a pretty full-time musician, touring and performing and recording,” he said. “Then I slowly turned my attention more toward art. I was, at the time, playing in different bands and now I’m making music more as a composer because I’ll
“I heard him playing Bach next door and I asked him to play on the record and he did,” Simonini said. “Another example of that is in Guerneville. I reached out to a local church choir and had them sing on the song. When you work this way, it’s fun to hear people’s strengths and be able to curate them into a piece of music.”
Simoni became interested in music when he was 13, thinking it was the most abstract act that “anybody could do.”
“By abstract, I mean it has no form,” added Simonini, whose first concert was Pearl Jam at Golden Gate Park.
“The idea that soundwaves are eliciting deep emotional responses from people is such a wild situation to me.”
He’s preparing to head to Zurich, Switzerland’s Suns.Works in late August/early September, when he will show his art.
“It’s a wonderful gallery,” said Simonini about the gallery that handles the estate of legendary Jamaican musician Lee Scratch Perry. “It’s a gallery that’s interested in artists who also make music and work across disciplines.”

‘BBQ Brawl’
Pasadena’s Kate Neville brings the heat to TV
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorWhen Kate Neville ran a marketing consulting firm, she looked to cooking to relax.
Inspired by her roommates, who were pastry and high-end chefs, she had a chance to breathe and unwind while preparing food.
“It was a different skillset than what I had to do professionally,” Neville said. “It was cathartic. They would teach me to cook breakfast, lunch and dinner. For five years, I had chefs looking over my shoulder.”
Hailing from Chicago, Neville said one of her favorite foods is barbecue.
“Chicago is a big barbecue city for ribs,” said Neville, who now lives near Pasadena. “I wanted to go eat ribs or a steak. I’m very carnivorous. I couldn’t find any good barbecue in LA, actually, which prompted me to grill for my own wants.”
Now, she is the owner and pitmaster of Los Angeles Craft BBQ and starring on the Food Network’s “BBQ Brawl” on Monday nights.
In “BBQ Brawl,” chefs Bobby Flay, Anne Burrell and series newcomer Sunny Anderson coach 12 pitmasters from across the country in high-stakes challenges to determine who will be named “Master of ‘Cue.”
“BBQ Brawl is back and Anne Burrell, last year’s winning team captain returns to defend her title against me and new team captain, the fabulous and unpredictable Sunny Anderson,” Flay said.
“We have 12 barbecue chefs from all over the country who will take residence in our new location in Northern California and fire up some smoky grills.”
For the first time, the competition takes place on location in California, with the home of Santa Maria-style barbecue and fresh ingredients as the background for battles testing the competitors’ culinary
skills and ability to work together as teams.
“It was a lot of fun,” Neville said about the filming without giving away too much. “It was a lot of pressure, definitely. All the chefs are extremely talented. It was cool to meet everybody who has the same passion. It’s a little different than running a business. There are different time constraints. There’s a lot more planning involved running a facility or business.”
The hurdles didn’t end there for Neville, who studied marketing and advertising at Columbia College Chicago.
“I think the biggest challenge for myself was everybody had already been on television,” she explained.
“I was the only person who hadn’t been on a TV show before. I was a little bit green about how these things work.”
Barbecue isn’t new to Neville. Several years ago, she took her savings and started HI-BBQ, a restaurant that soon became a multimillion business with several locations. Eater.com ranked it the No. 1 barbecue spot in Hawaii.
Now focusing on Los Angeles Craft BBQ in Pasadena, Neville caters around the area, pairing healthy sides like melon salad with brisket, for example.
“It’s a very LA approach to food,” she said with a laugh. “I have a great diversity in my repertoire in my various dishes.”
Neville was a vegetarian for seven years, so she has a diverse perspective of food.
“I used to be a personal trainer, too,” she said. “Having the personal trainer background, mixed with culinary background, makes for an interesting perspective.”
Barbecue won her over, too, because of the lifestyle that accompanies it.
“Everybody has a positive image of families barbecuing in the backyard — the grill, the smell of it, swimming in the pool.”

Pasadena dancers head to Phoenix for Hip-Hop Dance Championship
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorHip-hop dancers from 55 nations will pop, lock and break across the Phoenix, Arizona, area for the 22nd World Hip-Hop Dance Championship presented by Hip-Hop International.
A series of elimination rounds at the Arizona Grand Resort & Spa will narrow the field. The dancers then go for the gold on Sunday, Aug. 6, at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona.
Beau Fournier, the founder of Elements Dance Space in Pasadena, is bringing four companies all of which fall under the company name, Maker Empire. Those companies are the adult mega crew Rogue Makers; Jayvee mega crew Trouble Makers; Jayvee division 9 crew Ammp and Maker Empire Juniors.
A dancer since he was 19, the 40-yearold Fournier has been participating in the event since 2009, when his troupe, Fanny
Pak, performed during the world finals.
As a member of Fanny Pak, Fournier appeared on “America’s Best Dance Crew.” Since then, he has accompanied rapper Missy Elliot, singer Toni Braxton, Yelle and Jennifer Lopez.
He also choreographed and directed for BMW and 2012 Summer Olympics. His career has taken him to the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Canada, Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and many cities throughout the United States.
“I’m definitely proud of my history,” he said.
“I know I’m not done with my dancer career. Starting Elements Dance Space took a lot of time and effort, especially getting through COVID and the lockdown.
“I was working with (co-founder) Tu DeVera to make sure we stayed open for kids and dancers. But me, as an individual, I know my time isn’t done. I want my next

chapter to be well rounded.”
Hip-Hop International co-founders Howard and Karen Schwartz said this year’s event shows its resilience. The duo also created MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew.”
“We had an amazing event in 2019 and we were anticipating 2020 was going to be our biggest year yet,” she said.
“Then COVID hit. Who knew what was happening during COVID and the future of anything. We kept everybody going. We kept in communication with 55 countries. We did a virtual championship in 2021. We couldn’t do a live event because the embassies and borders were restricting people from traveling.”
In 2022, dancers worked hard to get visas, but the priority was on those with emergencies and others who needed to see family, Karen said.
“It was our first year back with a live event and it exceeded our expectations,” she said. “We had 211 crews, which really gave us excitement and enthusiasm for coming back this year. All indications were that 2023 was going to be the biggest yet and it certainly is going to be.”
The preliminary rounds are through Thursday, Aug. 3, followed by the semifinals on Friday, Aug. 4. The finals are Sunday, Aug. 6.
The world finals have all the color and ambiance of an Olympic sport, starting with the parade of nations followed by the competition. World Battles Day and two days of World Moves Dance Workshops taught by acclaimed hip-hop choreogra-
phers further highlight the family-friendly activities that are open to the public.
“We like to present the event as an Olympic-style event,” Howard said.
“The dancers at this event appreciate the fact that we treat it as an Olympic event. We look for a venue that can be like an Olympic village to bring the dance community and hip-hop culture together in one environment and one setting. We found the Arizona Grand was a perfect environment for us. This year, we have three overflow hotels. We’re tied to the Arizona Grand for another two years after this.”
Karen added, “Beyond the competition, which is certainly the focus, it’s a real cultural exchange. It’s an opportunity for a lot of the dancers to make friends with people and young adults, who share the passion of dance.
“It’s an amazing opportunity for somebody from the United States to create a friendship with people from Thailand, Japan or Germany. It’s incredible what you see and it’s life changing for so many of the participants. We like a venue that helps to nurture that, and the Arizona Grand has done that for us.”
Howard said one crew is coming from war-torn Ukraine, a country in which hiphop dancing is popular. Others are traveling from the Philippines.
“Every crew has something to offer, and it makes it special,” he said.
“Every crew has a story. Some have never been out of the country. This has been a dream of theirs to be able to make it to this event.”

The Cat’s Meow
Dulcie Taylor brings wine and song to South Pasadena
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorDulcie Taylor is sure about a few things: her love of cats, her obsession with music and her need to make the world a better place.
The blues-folk singer recently released the five-song EP “Edges of Silver” on Mesa/Bluemoon Recordings. She will perform tracks from the collection as part of the Wine & Song Show Series with David Plenn guest hosting, on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the Lost Parrot Café in South Pasadena. Plenn and Taylor formerly performed together.
“I love playing in Pasadena,” she said. “I know a good many of the people who are involved in the series and I see old friends.
“It’s a good time when I go down there.”
At the show, she will by Scott Breadman (who has played with the likes of
Jose Feliciano and Lindsey Buckingham) and her producer and label president, George Nauful.
“Playing percussion with us Scott is such a nice man and a lovely person,” she said. “George Nauful will be playing guitar with me.”
“Edges of Silver” is the follow-up release to 2021’s “Rediscovered,” a set of six songs she had previously recorded and been reimagined.
“Rediscovered” and a prior EP have combined to generate over 500,000 streams.
A nostalgic journey, “Edges of Silver” includes the poignant song “We Almost Got It Right.”
“That’s the first guitar solo I’ve played on any of the recordings,” said Taylor, the mother of five cats. “That song, it’s sad but it has a lot of belief of love in it. I hear friends say they broke up with their partners. It worked really well for 10 years
but, like a car, it stopped working. You can’t negate those 10 years, unless they were abusive. Things work as long as they do. That song means a lot to me.”
In music for 20-plus years, Taylor said it’s easy to stay inspired and passionate.
“I just love to sing,” said Taylor, an accomplished writer of poetry and prose. “I love recording. I love what music can do for you and inform your life. You can just see how happy it makes people.”
In addition to writing songs, Dulcie Taylor is a writer of poetry and prose. She served as a member of the board of directors of the O.B. Hardison Poetry Series at Washington, D.C.’s Folger Shakespeare Library when living in the area.

Scavenging with a Purpose
Prosperity Market promotes Black businesses in Pasadena and beyond
By Morgan Owen Pasadena Weekly Managing EditorIt’s summer, and nothing brings back childhood nostalgia like a good scavenger hunt. Combined with the retail therapy of adulthood, Prosperity Market’s Black Business Scavenger Hunt gives Angelenos an interactive way to explore the city by visiting Black-owned businesses. And if participants are enthusiastic enough, there may even be a prize.
The scavenger hunt will take place between Tuesday, Aug. 1, and Friday, Aug. 25, in time with Black Business Month. Participants can visit participating locations and check in by texting the unique keyword posted at that location. For each business checked into,
Prosperity Market awards one point, plus another five points if something is purchased.
Participating businesses run the gamut, including restaurants, salons, gyms, retail and bookstores. The scavenger hunt includes locations around the greater Los Angeles area, but participants can narrow their choices based on location or theme.
“This year, we have a new interactive map of all the participating businesses so people can search by neighborhood or category and map out the perfect itinerary,” said Kara Still, cofounder of Prosperity Market. “There are Black-owned businesses in every corner of Los Angeles, and we hope people will discover new places
in their backyard and beyond.”
This is the third year Prosperity Market has held its Black Business Scavenger Hunt. Started amid the pandemic, Prosperity Market is a Black-owned farmers market cofounded by Still and Carmen Dianne. Dianne said she couldn’t remember where the idea came from for the scavenger hunt but said she and Still wanted to include it in their business model from the outset.
Prosperity Market’s mission is to help fi ght food insecurity in a time when the only businesses open were grocery stores. Today, they do this by providing a space for Black produce sellers and small market vendors at their weekly farmers market.
“We wanted to encourage the growth of essential Black-owned businesses,” Dianne said. “We saw the gap during the pandemic, with 41% of Blackowned businesses being forced to close. … When nothing was open but the grocery stores, we realized we don’t have any Black-owned grocery stores in our region.”
In the three years since Prosperity Market began its Black Business Scavenger Hunt, it has grown enormously. Dianne said that in the fi rst year, only about 30 businesses participated; this year, there are more than 75. What excites Dianne is the chance the scavenger hunt has to promote businesses that are just opening.
“I think the scavenger hunt has a lot of impact, but it’s a layered impact,” Dianne said. “It’s just a fun thing to do — we are gamifying it — but we are creating awareness for Black-owned businesses. We have some participating businesses that are very well known, but some are really
new.” For Pasadena, Dianne said she is particularly excited to feature Octavia’s Bookshelf, a new bookstore in the area.
The feedback that Prosperity Market has received from the scavenger hunt has been overwhelmingly positive. In previous years, Dianne said businesses have reported increased sales and that customers come in specifically for the hunt. Some visitors, Dianne said, came in and discovered the scavenger hunt while shopping, excited to begin participating.
Every business has its reason for participating in the scavenger hunt, but many see the mission of what Prosperity Market is trying to accomplish as an attractive component. Amanda Gomez-Viup, the general manager of Poppy & Rose in Downtown Los Angeles, said the owners feel a sense of pride at being able to participate in a campaign featuring Black-owned businesses like theirs.
“I don’t think any business would ever be upset at more guests coming through their doors, but for us, it is about highlighting Black-owned businesses in Los Angeles — ones that have been there a long time. For instance, Poppy & Rose is coming up on 10 years,” Gomez-Viup said.
Even with accolades and popularity, Gomez-Viup said many people still don’t know that the American brunch spot exists, especially being located in the Flower District of Downtown. The scavenger hunt is a fun way to discover a new favorite restaurant.
To culminate the Black Business Scavenger Hunt, Prosperity Market will hold a grand finale pop-up farmers market in Inglewood on Aug. 27 at Hollywood Park. There will be live music, activities for
kids, food vendors, fashion booths and other vendors.
To kick that off, they will open their Virtual Market in the week leading up to the grand finale. There, customers can shop with vendors online and make purchases in advance. As a bonus, participants can also earn points by shopping at the Virtual Market.
Prosperity Market will announce winners and prizes during the grand finale — and the awards aren’t something to balk at, Dianne added. Dianne gave a few teasers from the list, including tickets to John Legend at the Hollywood Bowl.
To begin earning points, scavengers should text #BBSH23 to 323-417-0465.
More information about participating businesses, the interactive map and a guide to earning points is available on Prosperity Market’s website, prosperitymarketla.com.
Dianne said that in participating, she hopes people realize how simple and convenient it is to support Black-owned businesses in your area.
“The take-away from the scavenger hunt is that it’s really easy to support Black-owned businesses. We want to make it easy, convenient and fun. And the impact of this goes far beyond just Blackowned businesses because what it’s doing is stimulating our local economy all the way through.”

AUGUST 7
Andrew Leland is suspended in the lim-

He grew up with full vision, but starting in his teenage years, his sight began to degrade from the outside in, such that he now sees the world as if through a narrow tube. Soon — but without knowing exactly when — he will likely have no vision left. Full of apprehension but also dogged curiosity, Leland embarks on a sweeping exploration of the state of being that awaits him: not only the physical experience of blindness but also its language, politics and customs.

In “The First Kentucky Derby,” racing historian Mark Shrager examines the events leading up to the first “Run for the Roses,” the unsuccessful effort that the winning owner might have made to rig the race for his preferred
horse, and the prominent role played by African Americans in Gilded Age racing culture — a holdover from pre-emancipation days, when slaves were trained from birth to ride for their wealthy owners and grew up surrounded by the horses that would be their life’s work.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS:
If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER AND ALL
OTHER INTERESTED
PARTIES: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponeme nts be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether this sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-9390772 or visit this internet website www.nation wideposting.com using the file number assigned to this case: W22-12005. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE
TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code.
If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase.

you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale.
