Excuse Me, What Did You Say?
Exploring the implications of being parent to a trans child in today’s world
By Ellen Snortland Pasadena Weekly ColumnistOne of my dearest friends was at an idyllic wooded meditation retreat in Pennsylvania when her phone rang.
“Hi, Mom; I need to tell you something.”
“Yes?”
“I’m a girl.”
“Oh, OK. What?”
This came out of the mouth of what was, up to then, a very tall and large man. The timing of the phone call was intentional so that my friend — as a mom — could provide comfort and support to her newly minted daughter’s spouse.
The pair had only been married for four months in what seemed like a heterosexual marriage. Knowing that the new bride didn’t have a supportive family to speak to, my friend’s daughter chose a time when her wife and mother were together to make the announcement.
“Does that mean I’m a lesbian now?” the new spouse wondered. With years of life experience, my friend had the wisdom to comfort her new daughter-in-law through the initial shock of her husband’s announcement. Of course, she was also dealing with her astonishment.
This year’s Pride month, plus the proliferation of anti-trans legislation and associated violence, adds a new level of worry for the parents of trans kids.
I have two other cherished friends whose children have come out to them as adults. All three families are supportive and accepting. Putting myself in their shoes, I know I would be criticizing myself, asking “How did I not know? Was I missing something obvious?” and the ever-popular “What did I do wrong?” Answer: Nothing!
This may be obvious for many of my readers, but it bears repeating if necessary: Cultures worldwide have more than two genders. In many of the over 500 nations of Indigenous Americans, their ancient understanding that there are more than two genders is honored and not considered outside of “normal.” Some refer to the nonbinary tribal members as “two-spirit.”
Even Pakistan, a country as conservative as you can get, granted equal rights to third-gender trans folks in 2019. Many Muslim clerics were supportive of the legislation in the Pakistani Parliament.
I never thought it’d be safer to be trans in Pakistan than in some parts of the American South. This is not to say that being trans is easy anywhere, but it’s good to know there are islands of safety where you’d least expect it.
One of my friends said the process of transitioning was far from cut and dry but happened incrementally. For instance, his daughter,
now his son, never wanted to wear dresses. He said, “Betty had beautiful long hair and large breasts. She shaved her head during her last year in high school. Her friends were girls, but she dated boys in the first year of college.”
Now his pronouns are he/him. He dated a straight white cis woman and is now married to another trans man. They plan to have a family … and both have intact wombs. If you overthink the situation, you may go cross-eyed.
Once you see that gender is a construct — an obvious one, at that — you can’t “unsee” it. As a mild example, I was what would now be called gender-fluid; instead, I was called a “tomboy.” I was good at sports and resented not being allowed to be on boys’ sports teams.
My parents didn’t think there was anything “off” about me, because there wasn’t. I was simply myself. I didn’t fit neatly into the rigid negative “feminine” stereotypes of helplessness, passivity, and an obsessive concern with beauty.
Regarding my third friend, whose son declared his newly found daughter status, she’s not been ready to talk about it. Perhaps she’ll read about others with similar experiences.
So I have been flirting with the idea of creating an anthology of what the parents of trans offspring experience. It would be a collection of first-person accounts of what it’s been like for them. Remember that the LGBTQIA+ community is exactly that: a community that provides strength and support. Their parents need community, too. Perhaps a book would be a great way to start pulling them together instead of feeling so alone.
As humans, it’s common sense and common knowledge that change is not our favorite pastime. Another friend, Tien Neo Eamas, is trans with a few more distinctions: a person of color whose first language is not English. He talks to straight people honestly and openly about his journey and has created a seminar that clears up the confusion. If you’d like to schedule a class or consultation, he can be reached by emailing support@ilumn8.life.
If you are on this journey, don’t do it alone. Your head will most likely become an echo chamber of doubts, shame and recriminations. You could be like Indigenous people and consider it good luck to be related to a two-spirit person. We can be grateful for our differences and remember that stretching our minds — while sometimes initially painful — results in more flexibility rather than rigid

FABULOUS FOURTH
Enjoying Fireworks Responsibly
Where to enjoy the festivities nearby Pasadena
By Morgan Owen Pasadena Weekly Managing EditorFireworks are illegal in Pasadena. The consequences of disobeying the ordinance are arrest, vehicle impoundment, a $50,000 fine and up to one year in county jail. The city said the ordinance is meant to protect public safety and mitigate the risk of fires.
“Even handheld sparklers, which many consider safe, are dangerous and can reach 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, causing serious burns or fires. National Fire Protection Association statistics reveal that a majority of fireworks-related injuries are caused by so-called “safe and sane” fireworks, which are illegal in Pasadena,” the Pasadena Fire Department said in a statement.
The Pasadena Police Department will patrol the area with special fireworks enforcement patrols before and on July 4. Any vehicles parked illegally in Pasadena’s hillside areas will be impounded. The Pasadena Fire Department wanted to remind the public that illegal fireworks will not be tolerated.
“Statistics show that fireworks are among the most dangerous of all consumer products. The city maintains a zero-tolerance enforcement policy for fireworks and Pasadena’s municipal code holds property owners and tenants responsible for permitting the possession, sale, usage or discharge of fireworks on their property.”
So where can the people of Pasadena go to celebrate July 4 with the traditional pastime of pyrotechnics?
This year the Rose Bowl is not holding its annual AmericaFest and fireworks show, instead holding a soccer match. According to Jens Weiden, the Rose Bowl general manager, AmericaFest cost the stadium more than half a million dollars in 2022. If the fireworks show returns, it will need to be reworked, he said.
The closest place to see fireworks will be in South Pasadena during the Festival of Balloons. The event will kick off at 9 p.m. at the South Pasadena High School Stadium at 1401 Fremont Avenue.
There will also be a fireworks show at
9 p.m. in Alhambra at Almansor Park, 800 S. Almansor Street. The show will be part of the city of Alhambra’s Fourth of July Celebration. Gates open at 4 p.m., and there will be food, games and live entertainment. Security will strictly enforce a clear bag policy. Alcohol, smoking, coolers and illegal fireworks are not allowed.
Nearby, Universal Studios Hollywood will also have an Independence Day celebration and fireworks display. Throughout the day, the park will have live music, themed décor and other festivities at the price of admission. At 9 p.m., there will be a fireworks show with music played to the tune of Universal-produced patriotic favorites.
San Gabriel Parade and Kids’ Day
City comes together for Fourth of July celebration
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorThe city of San Gabriel has invited families and residents to celebrate the Fourth of July through its annual hometown parade and free Kids’ Day event. The half-hour parade will commence at 9 a.m. near Plaza Park in the Historic Mission District and head east on Broadway Avenue. There will be prizes awarded for the most patriotic costumes and parade entries.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to have an event at the beginning of the day,” community services director Rebecca Perez said. “I know a lot of agencies and cities have events toward the end of the day leading into fireworks, but this is a nice way to kick off the day with an Independence Day celebration bringing everyone together, providing a great, small-town feel and giving kids and families a fun time.”
This year’s winner of the city’s Outstanding Older American Award, Joey Claro, will serve as the grand marshal for the parade. The award is given to people

who are 65 or older and have performed “outstanding volunteer service” for the San Gabriel community.
“(Claro) is very involved in the commu-
nity,” Perez said. “He’s a Kiwanian. He helps coordinate and volunteers at the Ramona Museum, which is located in the Mission District. And he’s involved with the historical association, so a lot of community involvement.
“His group actually comes out for the parade and has a large flag that they carry, one of those that you need like 30 people around the flag to carry. So that’s really awesome to have at the start of the parade.”
Following the parade, the Kids’ Day event will bring family-friendly games, community booths, food trucks and live entertainment to Smith Park. Perez explained that a diverse cast of community groups and organizations will be involved this year, including the Asian Youth Center, La Casa Community Center and San Gabriel Seagulls swim team, which will be offering a free recreational swim session from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Community services director Rebecca Perez described the San Gabriel Fourth of July parade as a “nice way to kick off the day with an Independence Day celebration bringing everyone together, providing a great, small-town feel and giving kids and families a fun time.”
“We’ll have a wide variety of kinds of groups that serve different demographics in our community, which is great,” Perez said. “We asked that all of the community organizations that come out provide something for kids to do, whether it’s a craft or a game for them to play. … It’s a lot of fun and a very festive time.”
The Kids’ Day event will also commemorate current and former military members that live in San Gabriel with an “Honor Wall” display alongside a veterans group with memorabilia.
“It gives us a chance to remember those who have served for our country,” Perez said.
For Perez, both the Fourth of July parade and Kids’ Day stand as two of several summer events created to bring members
of the San Gabriel community together for a celebratory gathering.
“We had our kickoff last night, which was our ‘surf’s up’ event in the community, which is kind of our kickoff to all of our summer celebrations,” she explained.
“The council has provided these events for the community and is very supportive of these events. We have concerts in the park, we have movies and our Fourth of July Kids’ Day event. It just provides a little bit of something for everyone in our community. This event especially brings out the veterans, which in our community tend to be an older group, yet you have a lot of young kids and families coming to this event, so it’s a really broad spread of people and a great opportunity for the community to come together.”

El Tráfico at the Rose Bowl
LAFC and LA Galaxy prepare for July 4 standoff
By Jeff Moeller Pasadena Weekly Contributing WriterOne of the highlights of the 2023 Major League Soccer (MLS) schedule is a special edition of El Tráfico featured as a special attraction.
LAFC, reigning MLS champs, travels to the Rose Bowl on July 4 to face the host, LA Galaxy. The intercity rivalry makes its debut in Pasadena at a historic venue the home squad knows well.
Before moving to Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson in 2003, the Galaxy played at the Rose Bowl from 1996-02. The first game in franchise history drew 69,255 fans. The team’s tenure at the Rose Bowl also ended with a championship, the first of an MLS-best of five for the Galaxy.
One of the team’s initial stars, goalkeeper Jorge Campos, enjoyed playing at the Bowl in an upstart league.
“After we scored out first goal, I knew it was home,” he said. “It was interesting to try and play professional soccer in the United State for the first time.”
Campos, like many then, was curious about MLS. He became the first international player in MLS/Galaxy history when he signed his contract. He ended up playing two seasons in LA and was a fan favorite for his acrobatic style of play and the colorful attire he wore in goal.
His favorite memory? That’s easy, he said. His first game.
“I was not sure I was going to be in the first game because I was playing in the Mexican league playoffs, but when I got there, it was a crazy lot of people,” the for-

mer Mexican standout goalie said.
Campos believes the strong Mexican soccer tradition in Los Angeles helped the fledgling league in those early days in particular. The league has grown since, but nobody really knew what to expect on any given week.
From a business perspective, the attendance for each game fluctuated. Campos believes a big reason for that can be attributed to the purchasing habits of Mexican American fans. Campos said they generally lean toward buying tickets the day of the game, which can lead to apathy if the team is losing.
In 1998 the Galaxy, one of the original 10 teams in the league, had an MLS-best 21,784 season tickets sold. For one game in 1999, the team played before an announced crowd of 7,581 fans. Not a great look in a cavernous stadium.
On the field, Campos never forgot the first time he saw his new playing surface.
“There were no rocks,” he said with a smile. “When I came here, we practiced in a parking lot outside, fields that were maybe for baseball or football. But as kids that is what we always did. But now of course it’s more popular. Everywhere I look I see soccer teams; I see the kids playing.”
Players such as Campos, Eduardo Hurtado and Martin Machon eventually left LA. Mauricio Cienfuegos’ run with the franchise came to an end too after eight seasons. These moves had an overall negative effect.
But one player in particular — Cobi Jones — quickly grew into the face of LA Galaxy.
Before Landon Donovan, David Beckham,
Robbie Keane and Zlatan Ibrahimović, Jones was Mr. Galaxy. He grew up in Southern California. He attended UCLA. With his dreadlocks, it was no stretch he would be the “hair apparent” to soccer greatness.
“His mentality was different, and I loved to play with him,” Campos said. “He enjoyed playing, and he is a funny guy, along with being a very good player.”
In 1998, Jones enjoyed his best year with Galaxy. He finished second in MLS with 51 points, and several individual awards followed. In 2005, he became the last player in MLS to remain with his original team since 1996. He is now in the Hall of Fame.
As a local high school player, Jones had zero plans for playing college soccer. Later he would be the ultimate performer inside a venue that regularly hosts Bruins football games.
The game on July 4 will be the next great spectacle in the 100-plus history of the Rose Bowl. A sellout crowd will set a
new attendance record for an MLS match, which has soccer fans excited.
“This rivalry has, from day one, delivered an energy and electricity that, together with incredible moments and memories on the pitch, has established it among the most engaging not only in Los Angeles but across MLS,” LAFC Co-President Larry Freedman said. “It is only fitting that we are now taking it to one of the most iconic venues in all of sports.”
The 2023 campaign marks the 28th season in Major League Soccer and the sixth season in LAFC history. The game in Pasadena is also a rematch of a 2022 Western Conference Semifinal which LAFC won, 2-1, on Oct. 21 en route to their first MLS Trophy to cap off a terrific season (LAFC became the second team since 2012 to win MLS Cup and the Supporters’ Shield in the same year). El Tráfico is the nickname for the rivalry between the two LA-based clubs.

The Festival of Balloons
South Pasadena holds historic Independence Day parade
By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy EditorThe Festival of Balloons has been South Pasadena’s annual Fourth of July celebration for over four decades. Running with the theme “Red, White and Blue — Bold Stripes, Bright Stars and Brave Hearts, Too,” this year’s parade will start at 11 a.m. by the Library Community Room on Diamond Avenue and end at Garfield Park.
“If you live in the city, either you’re in the parade or you’re watching the parade,” community services director Sheila Pautsch said with a laugh. “We have about 42 entries at this moment, and they’re all groups from South Pas, from Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, local nonprofits, AYSO Little League, our stables, our tennis club, all kinds … it’s unbelievable.”
Before the Festival of Balloons parade, South Pasadena’s day of festivities starts with the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast at 7 a.m. in the fire department parking lot. The event is said to draw in “hundreds and hundreds” of guests ahead of the city’s opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m., held on the steps of the Library Community Room. Pautsch said that it feels like a “big family gathering.”
“It’s really nice to see everybody come together,” she described. “We all meet at the stairs and we do a little program just introducing our day with words from the mayor, the superintendent, and our high school minutemen band will do the national anthem. We then have a Boy Scout group that leads us in the color guards and the Pledge of Allegiance.”
Once the parade begins, members of the community will walk along the procession of organizations and officials, who include South Pasadena councilmembers and school board members as well as City Manager Arminé Chaparyan, Sen. Anthony Portantino, Congresswoman Judy Chu and Assemblymember Mike Fong in attendance this year.
The cavalcade will eventually land in Garfield Park, where the “party at the park” will feature games, food booths, and a live concert by LA band U.S. 99 until 3 p.m.
“What the tradition has always been is to do the traditional games: the water balloon toss, three-legged race, sack races, hula hoop contest, tug of war, even, from like when I was a kid … just some fun games with the kids and they get little prizes,” Pautsch said. “It’s very much a community event … then we’ll make our way to the high school for the fireworks show.”
South Pasadena’s Fourth of July fireworks will begin at 9 p.m., and this year’s guests will be able to watch on from the stands of South Pasadena High School’s football stadium.
“The big difference from this year is our high school football field is under construction,” Pautsch explained. “People used to be able to come and sit on the football field, and now they have to sit in the stadium this year, but we’re hoping we still get a good crowd coming.
“(The city) has always been really good at bringing (the festival) back. It was Mayor Ted Shaw and Councilmember David Margrave who decided to kick off this Fourth of July with the pancake breakfast,
parade and firework show. It really started as a youth parade, with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and has really just evolved to this Festival of Balloons.”
Pautsch explained that historic celebrations like the Festival of Balloons play integral roles in creating and sustaining relationships throughout the community. She said that it creates a sense of togetherness in South Pasadena.
“When I grew up, we always had block parties, and it was always fun knowing that all the neighbors were getting together,” Pautsch described. “It’s just a big sense of community, a sense of belonging,
a sense of place, that this is their city, and they’re proud of what their city is doing.
“It’s an unbelievable community event. It’s amazing how this community comes together to make sure that all this happens … I have just not been a part of something that has been so community based. In my last city, we never had a Fourth of July event, parade or anything. Even for the parades we did have at Christmastime, we had a lot of outside groups, not inside city organizations, so it’s really cool to see how the community comes together. … It makes you want to be a part of your city.”

Pasadena Arson Arrest
City provides update on DaVita Dialysis center fire incident
Special to Pasadena Weekly
Pasadena Fire responded to a call of an exterior fire at 390 S. Fair Oaks Avenue, the DaVita Dialysis center on Friday, June 13, at approximately 5:30 a.m. At the time of the fire, there were approximately 22 people inside of the center, many in the middle of dialysis treatment. All patients were evacuated by Pasadena police, and no injuries were reported.
Dialysis staff and fire personnel continued to assess the patients during the short time they were outdoors. Surveillance video showed a female setting fire to a large locked storage area of the structure. As a result of the arson, a natural gas main was damaged and enhanced the fire effects during suppression efforts.
That morning, the suspect on video was identified as Johanna Romo of Pasadena. Officers located Romo at Memorial Park around 10 p.m. the evening of June 16. Romo was wearing the identical clothing to the female suspect in the surveillance video.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office is filing P.C. 451 (b) “Arson of an inhabited structure.”

Finding Her Peace
Kit Hoover is at home in La Cañada Flintridge, with ‘Access’
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive EditorKit Hoover was 40 years old with a husband and three kids when she landed her dream job: the anchor of “Access Hollywood” and co-host of “Access Daily with Mario & Kit.”
Ever since then, this has been home to Hoover and her family.
“I grew up in Atlanta, and I moved here 13 years ago,” said Hoover, who lives in La Cañada Flintridge.
“When we arrived, we drove straight to the Rose Bowl. I immediately felt like I was home. I thought, ‘This is going to be OK. We can do this.’ We didn’t know if were excited to move or not. I took this
leap of faith. It’s so funny to look back on. We’re Californians now.”
Keeping it fresh
Hoover earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, after earning an athletic scholarship for track and cross country.
“My whole roots were based in the South,” she said. “I ended up in New York with my husband, and then Connecticut and then here. With journalism, I never wanted to be on TV or to be famous or anything. It was never my goal. I wanted to do something creative. When I fell into this career path,
it seemed to suit me, especially live TV.”
Her career has been robust. She made her TV debut in July 1995 on MTV’s “Road Rules,” which led to an entertainment correspondent position for the syndicated magazine show American Journal.
In 1999, she joined Fox News as a correspondent for Fox Broadcasting Company’s news magazine Fox Files and served as a correspondent for “The Pulse” and “Celebrity Spotlight,” also co-hosting the latter. She also hosted “Fox Rules with Kit Hoover.”
Four years later, she joined ESPN as cohost of ESPN2’s live morning show, “Cold Pizza,” covering events like 2004 Summer
Olympics, the 2004 and 2005 Super Bowls, the 2004 NBA Finals, and the 2003 and 2004 World Series.
In January 2004, she became a feature and field reporter for the tennis events such as the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the French Open. She served in this role until July 2006, focusing on topics off the tennis court, interviewing the winner and giving the breaking news from the tennis match.
In March 2005, Hoover and her Cold Pizza co-host, Thea Andrews, were replaced by Dana Jacobson. From 2004 to 2006, she served as a judge on ESPN’s “Dream Job.”
Hoover left ESPN in September 2006.
Her resume also includes stints with the TV Guide Channel, Six Flags TV, TLC’s “Real Simple, Real Life,” and “Shaq Vs.” She served as the co-host of the show alongside Mike Goldberg, as well as the sideline reporter.
Since Sept. 13, 2010, she has co-hosted Access Daily with various co-hosts, and in 2019 she became host of the flagship program Access Hollywood.
“I’m just so grateful,” she said. “Recently, I was with Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. I covered the Oscars. It all blends in. When people are giving and gracious, that makes it really fun.
“Lately, on ‘Access Daily,’ I’ve been interviewing people doing extraordinary things with the human spirit. These are noncelebrities, and those interviews have interested me a lot more lately.”
At age 52, she is just taking it one day at a time.
“I do feel like I haven’t even hit my stride,” she said. “I’m loving ‘Access Hollywood’ and ‘Access Daily.’ We’re in a great groove over there. We’re leading with gratitude and an open mind.”
Sticking around
Hoover is well known for her optimistic disposition. When she was eight months pregnant with her third child, her house burned down, she was let go from her job, her parents filed for divorce, and her cousin died by suicide.
In 2021, while Kit, her husband and her son were at home, there was a home invasion where the individual robbed them and drove off in their car.
Hoover enjoys living in the area, however, and remains upbeat about it. She enjoys running the Rose Bowl Loop Trail and taking in the flea market.
“La Cañada Flintridge has been a great place to raise our kids,” she said. “It’s a throwback town. The kids can walk around. We always do our big family dinner at Taylor’s Steak House. We go to the Golden Donut and all the little businesses that we love. We love the concerts on Sunday nights. They’re spectacular. We just love the Arroyo and Pasadena. We hit a home run.”

Anywhere But a Stage
Democratic dance transforms nontraditional spaces
By Morgan Owen Pasadena Weekly Managing EditorInstead of taking her cues from a stage, Heidi Duckler takes inspiration from the world and communities around her. Each performance produced by Duckler and her company, Heidi Duckler Dance, transforms spaces not traditionally used for dance into something new, as the choreography engages with themes of that environment.
In one performance, “Back to Circulation,” Duckler used the large, floor-toceiling windows in the West Hollywood Library as symbolic thresholds for sharing information and knowledge. In another, she brought to life the story of “The Chandelier” by Brazilian author Clarice Linspector, using the architecture of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts to explore ideas of permanence and transience.
For 38 years, Heidi Duckler Dance has performed across Southern California anywhere but on a stage. She explained that transforming nontraditional spaces through dance, which is part of HDD’s mission, is based on the concept that dancing democratically can promote spatial justice.
“Spatial justice is really a concept based on access and democracy and the choice of having people look at dance from different perspectives,” Duckler said. “Using the body as a vehicle, we believe dance drives discovery. In an effort to make Los Angeles a more animated and equitable city, (our) artistic offerings reveal truths about historic landmarks, reawaken abandoned places, and turn the spaces we seemingly know well on their heads.”
Duckler operates within the ultra-specific genre of democratic dance. Also known as community dance, this dance form developed as part of the modern dance revolution. It seeks to distinguish itself against the perceived elitism of European ballet by using movement to engage with social issues and complexities of society.
For Duckler, democratic dance means “using movement as a tool for survival, resistance, healing and growth.” It can do more than just entertain, she asserted; it can change how people view the world — and themselves.
Creating site-specific works is not just a change for the performers. Similar to how
democratic dance bucks the ideals of ballet, place-based dance rejects the accepted format of the audience’s consumption. According to Duckler, place-based performances create a different way for the audience to look at the world and relate to the dance’s themes.
“It gives you multiple perspectives. When you go to a theater, you’re told where to sit, and you’re given a lot of instruction. When you see site-specific work, you think for yourself, and you have to make a lot of independent choices,” Duckler said. “It’s empathetic. It’s not passive. It’s a very participatory engagement.”
An example of this kind of production was HDD’s 35th anniversary series in 2020, “The Quest.” The 10 performances in the series brought audiences on a voyage through LA. But instead of performing in the iconic locations LA is known for, Duckler selected paces of working, learning, healing and discovery. Stops included the Bendix Building, where HDD is based; Founder’s Church; and the Watts Labor Community Action Center.
An important component for Duckler in all of her productions is to include and engage with diverse communities. Another tenant of democratic dance is that anyone can dance anywhere, whether it’s a 6-yearold in their bedroom or a 100-year-old in a laundromat. Duckler said she believes democratic dance can help people of all different backgrounds connect and find empathy for each other.
“The No. 1 thing I want people to know about our dance company is that it’s made up of multiple people with different points of view. They’re all incredibly talented. Through their talents and skills, they can express themselves in very collaborative ways,” Duckler said.
“One Leg at a Time” is one example of how the performers Duckler works with influence the final product of the performance. “One Leg at a Time” was the culmination of a three-month educational residency by HDD at the California Institution for Women.
Throughout the residency, teaching artists at HDD worked with a group of incarcerated women to develop a performance that focused on issues they faced, such as self-esteem, personal responsibility, and the physical expression of trauma and overwhelming events.
“This exhibition challenged audience members to evaluate how the arts can inform the conversation around mental health, and sexual and physical abuse among incarcerated women. This journey allowed all walks of life to be encapsulated in the participants’ world, bridging the gap between the free and the incarcerated and fostering greater understanding, empathy and respect,” stated Duckler’s website, describing “One Leg at a Time.”
Workshops like this residency at the California Institute of Women are the final pillar of Duckler’s company, arts education. HDD’s education vision is based on exploration, and Duckler has been implementing educational programs since 2013.
Since then, HDD has worked with more than 10,000 underserved youth and families from South and East LA. HDD also works with veterans, seniors, correctional facilities and mental health organizations.
“We work with adults coming out of incarceration. … We have a wonderful oneon-one mentorship program with foster youth, and we work with intergenerational families,” Duckler said. “Our education programs keep growing. There seems to be such an incredible need, so we are there as long as we’re needed,” Duckler said.
In 2017, the Los Angeles Unified School
District invited HDD to work with underserved schools to create free dance programming. These residencies are specifically for schools that receive a score of one or two on the Arts Equity Index. The goal is to challenge students to interact with their environment as they learn about improvisation, choreography and dance styles.
Duckler doesn’t just offer educational programs for youth; she also provides dance education for intergenerational families. The curriculum of these workshops focuses on activating memory through storytelling and specific choreographic techniques. These workshops connect seniors and youth to encourage them to share their stories in a creative and empathetic environment.
As the audience comes out of the places seen in isolation during the pandemic, Duckler said democratic dance is more important now than ever.
“The things that are happening in the world today can be so troubling. The arts give us hope, joy, a sense of community, and the need to find our truth and be together. It’s really important that we stay confident and use our bodies (to express things) that sometimes, you just can’t find the words.”
A Nonedible Feast
The Norton Simon Museum explores food in art through the ages
By Leah Schwartz Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterFood is a foundational element of life, and art imitates life. Food has long been a prominent motif in painting throughout European history and modernity, reflecting the attitudes and issues surrounding sustenance.
The Norton Simon Museum’s “All Consuming: Art and the Essence of Food” explores how artists depicted and shaped food culture from 16th century Europe to the 1900s. The exhibit is ongoing through Monday, Aug. 14.
As with all Norton Simon shows, the exhibit draws exclusively from the museum’s extensive permanent collection and features approximately 60 paintings, prints, photographs and sculptures, organized thematically into three categories: Hunger, Excess and Sustenance.
Food and drink are principal elements in European art, depicting tables piled high with luscious feasts and glistening fruit and vegetable still lifes. Delving deeply into food imagery and history, curator Maggie Bell also featured “less obvious” food scenes involving agricultural production and commerce, indulgence, cravings and abstention.
“All of us have relationships with food,” Bell said. “There are lots of different ways that we’re becoming engaged with food production and consumption — who has it and who doesn’t? That has historical precedents, and these works of art help explore that.”
The Hunger and Excess sections are juxtaposed in the first gallery space. Hunger features pre-20th century European art like the gaunt figures in Francisco de Goya’s “Disasters of War” series and a Rembrandt print depicting a rural migrant family looking for a meal at the door of an affluent city dweller. Hunger is shown in countless nuanced ways — war, disaster, charity and religious fasting. Several works in this section were created during periods of food insecurity, inspired by firsthand artist accounts.
Excess explores perceived amoral consumption shaped by historical attitudes surrounding gender, class and race. For example, satirist William Hogarth’s widely disseminated print “Gin Lane” depicts the effects of vices associated with London’s poorer classes; a half-dressed, gin-drunk woman reaches into a snuffbox while her child falls from her arms. Women are depicted in many of these works as overindulgent
and sinful, which can be traced back to Christian theology, beginning with Adam and Eve and the temptation of the forbidden fruit.
“Most of the works depict women in states of undress or inebriation that spoke to the anxieties at the time around women and sexuality,” Bell explained. “Much of that has to do with women’s perceived inability to control their appetites, which resonates with anxieties around women and food, even today.”
Indulgent and addictive goods like coffee, tobacco and chocolate, imported from European colonies, feature in sexualized depictions of consumption, often tinged with racial stereotypes, like in Achille Devéria’s “Odalisque.” In the painting, a woman in an exoticized costume lounges suggestively on a divan, smoking a cigarette next to a tray of coffee.
Sustancence, the broadest category, depicts the daily bustle of food regarding land, labor and commerce, emphasizing comfort, plenty and connection. Seventeenth century Dutch and Flemish still-life paintings populate this section of the gallery, like Frans Snyder’s idealized depiction of a stocked agrarian storeroom replete with heaps of citrus, berries and gourds, which would have grown in different regions and seasons. Following the increased political interest in rural labor in 19th century France, artists like Camille Pissarro began to focus on those who cultivated and sold food. Pissarro’s “The Poultry Market at Pontoise” celebrates the social dynamics and people of the marketplace rather than its wares. Pissarro was a staunch critic of capitalism and mass production.
The final gallery brings the exhibition’s themes closer to home with American photographer Edward Weston’s and Mexican photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo’s photographs of Mexico and California in the 1930s. Weston’s snapshots of ranches and vineyards offer a look into California food production, while Bravo documented the buying, selling and cultivation of food in and around Mexico City.
Bell explained that she included this section as a “coda to the exhibition to bring some of these themes into more geographical and temporal proximity. … I wanted it to resonate more immediately with those of us who live in Southern California.”
Accompanying the exhibit, a response area invites visitors to reflect on art’s continued role in shaping and relaying society’s relationship with food and sustenance.

Angel City Games
Adaptive multisport competition moves to USC in 9th year
By Sullivan Maley Pasadena Weekly Staff WriterAngel City Sports will host its ninth annual Angel City Games this weekend in a new setting: the University of Southern California.
The new venue will allow the games to more effectively market to its target audience of low-income individuals with disabilities who may not have seen sports as an option, said Angel City Sports CEO and founder Clayton Frech.
“We felt like being closer to the lower-income ZIP codes was a really good thing for us locally,” Frech said. “Ten of the top (16) poorest ZIP codes are in close proximity to USC. … I also just really loved the way that USC fits in to the community.”
The Angel City Games is one of the largest adaptive multisport competitions in the nation. Each year the games gather hundreds of athletes with physical disabilities for clinics and competitions, as well as the opportunity to network with current and former Olympians, Paralympians and coaches.
Frech was introduced to the world of adaptive sports when his son Ezra was born missing his left knee and fibula, along with all but one of the fingers on his left hand. Determined not to allow his son’s condition to keep him from experiencing sports, he began learning as much as he could about the possibility of adaptive sports.
“When he was eight, I took him to a Paralympic competition out in Oklahoma that’s very similar to the Angel City Games,” Frech said. “I just fell in love with this idea of bringing a whole community together and learning in a clinic and then competing in sport together, and so I became sort of obsessed with bringing this idea to Southern California.”
Two years later, in 2015, UCLA hosted the first Angel City Games. In the eight years since, what was once a small event consisting of just track and basketball has grown to offer clinics and competitions in 17 different sports.
Athletes fall into one of three categories: blind or visually impaired athletes; seated athletes who rely on wheelchairs for mobility; and ambulatory athletes, or those who can walk without assistance despite an amputation or other physical disability.
Some sports, like wheelchair basketball or blind soccer, are specifically intended for one of these groups. Others, like track and field, have classifications for athletes with any sort of disability.
What makes the Angel City Games unique, however, is their role as not just an athletic competition but a community event. Each year the games bring together a community of athletes, coaches, volunteers, supporters and fans with disabilities of all kinds — and some without disabilities at all.
“We don’t really discriminate. If you don’t have a disability, it’s OK,” Frech said. “You can still sign up as an athlete and do whatever sports, and so that’s really cool for siblings, parents even, of kids with disabilities, that can play alongside their kids.”
The games also provide a variety of events and programming outside of competitions and clinics to allow more newcomers to get involved with adaptive sports. Frech expects spectators to particularly enjoy the Hartford Experience Zone. Angel City Sports partner Hartford Insurance brings together what Frech describes as Angel City’s “Athlete Village,” consisting of several games, vendors and sponsor activities, as well as resources like massage tents, information booths for new athletes and a veteran meet and greet.
“Anyone that’s there, volunteer, spectator or athlete, can pop into the experience zone and do a little rowing or do a little golf and shoot some hoops,” Frech said. “That’s kind of cool because there really aren’t that many opportunities for the broader community to try our sports, and so this is a place for them to do that.”

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there
are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO
PROPERTY OWNER:
The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916)939-0772 or visit this internet website http://search.nationwideposting.com/propertySearchTerms.aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA22002872
52 Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee
auction if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase.
