Dementia Doula

These specialists provide relief, guidance and hard-won wisdom

“What do you do professionally?”

“I’ve been a production coordinator. Pre-pandemic, I coordinated commercials and programs; now I’m coordinating live events.” Then Anna Schloblom de Cruder added, “The work I’m truly passionate about came from my experience with my mother’s dementia. I am also a dementia doula and advocate.”

We are talking while standing on the busy street corner outside my home. It’s hot. Cars whiz by. Anna is on a ladder I am holding. Anna, a friend from the Central Altadena Buy Nothing group, agreed to help me hang a protest sign up high in my olive trees. The sign is decrying the proposed Poly Tech Sports Complex for the Altadena Foothills. Realizing the importance of our conversation and that Anna’s work helps so many people deal with dementia in their families, I ask, “Will you text me more about dementia doulas? It sounds like a great column.”

every elder caregiver (and family member!), starting at the beginning of an elder displaying any symptoms of cognitive decline.”

If you’ve never heard of a dementia doula before, neither had I. It’s like it sounds, but instead of a doula for birth, or for death in some cultures, there are people who manage people and families through the often-excruciating process of going into the tunnel of dementia.

Dementia doulas provide relief, guidance and hard-won wisdom to families and people who are often overwhelmed. In a culture that prides itself on never needing help (how crazy are we?), we all need help with new phases of life. Dementia is no different. If we see a child showing a talent for music, we funnel musical resources toward them. The same is true of a person who is experiencing dementia. Think of it as a reversal in childhood; rather than gaining skills, the person is decreasing competencies, so playing to their strengths is incumbent.

Good to her word. Anna texted me references, including a TEDx talk by Judy Cornish, a pioneer in “strength-based” dementia care. I immediately watched the TED talk. Ms. Cornish also has books and more on her website, thedawnmethod.com. DAWN is an acronym for Dementia & Alzheimer’s Wellbeing Network. I’ve had older relatives succumb to Alzheimer’s, and within my contemporaries, a friend is following in her own mother’s Alzheimer’s footsteps. My friend quit her job as a therapist last year because she could no longer keep track of her clients. Dementia and Alzheimer’s is painfully familiar and often close to many of us. Those numbers will steadily increase as the boomers hit their boom.

In Ms. Cornish’s TEDx talk, she uses two columns. “Lost,” on the left side, lists three functions we use when our brains are healthy: rational thought, remembering self, and mindfulness. Those functions dissipate at varying rates when we go through and into dementia. “Retained,” on the right side, is intuitive thought, experiential self and mindlessness.

“Experiential self” struck a chord with me. I thought back to a friend I have who is Mexican, whom I’ll call “Belinda.” “Belinda’s” mother, “Charlotte,” began to exhibit behaviors that were worrisome to her large family. As the new matriarch, Belinda was helpless even though she was a family therapist. As is often the case, what we know professionally can fly out the window when the problem is in our front yard. Belinda and her family would argue with Charlotte in Spanish, her only language. They would try to convince her that she wasn’t making sense … which didn’t make any sense to Charlotte since she’d lost her rational thought, one of the functions of a healthy brain.

I dealt with Charlotte successfully because I could not argue with her since I have the equivalent of toddler Spanish. So what I did, and what lit Charlotte up, was I sang and danced with her! She was a young adult in Mexico City in the ’40s and ’50s and knew a lot of American Standards. We sang Gershwin and Porter at the top of our lungs and danced. The more the family did that with her, the better they all got along.

In further conversation with Anna via email, she said, “I read ‘The Dementia Handbook’ by Judy Cornish in late 2019, and it was so helpful to me as I spent time with my mom in her last months. It’s written for caregivers, and I swear it should be required reading for

Anna continued, “Cornish truly helped me to find joy in my time with my mother by changing my attitude and mindset. When I was in the present and without worry as I interacted with her, her anxiety and agitation levels were much lower, and the enjoyment and appreciation for both of us were much greater. Ms. Cornish’s other book ‘Dementia with Dignity’ expands on the handbook, including her background and path to this caretaking methodology, with many more examples.”

Most bookstores carry “Dementia with Dignity,” but few have “The Dementia Handbook.” Currently, Amazon carries English and Spanish editions.

If you don’t have someone in your life with dementia, earmark this column for when you do, as, statistically, most of us will. Dementia can be full of joy — and that’s a sentence you never thought you’d read.

Saving Lives

Area shelter rescues 38 cats living with hoarder

Pasadena Humane rescued more than 38 cats and kittens from a stationary travel trailer in Monrovia on June 30.

The cats were living in cramped and unsanitary conditions inside a very small space with no air conditioning, according to Pasadena Humane staff.

During the operation, Pasadena Humane staff worked to safely remove the cats from the home. The cats were transported to the shelter, where they received medical exams before being placed into clean kennels with food, water and fresh bedding.

our care,” said Dia DuVernet, president and chief executive officer of Pasadena Humane. “Pasadena Humane is here to provide food, shelter and care for animals in need, and these cats certainly needed our help.”

The healthy cats will be made available for adoption immediately. The cats will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before going to their new homes.

“We are deep into our busy season right now, and our cat center is very full. We are anticipating even more animals coming in over the 4th of July holiday,” DuVernet added.

“With the busy summer upon us, resources are stretched to the limit. We really need our community’s help to find homes for all the cats and help support their care.”

Some of the cats are suffering from symptoms of upper respiratory but are in overall stable condition. The cats are now under the supervision of a veterinarian and are being provided with needed medical care. Fortunately, most of the cats appear to be friendly.

“I am happy to report that all the cats found living in the trailer are now safely in

Adoptions are available by appointment and can be made on the shelter’s website. Pasadena Humane has also set up an online donation page to help support care for the cats. Donations can be made at pasadenahumane.org/helpnow.

Pasadena Humane will host a “Free Adoption Day” on Saturday, July 15, sponsored by Gabrielle Bruveris.

Adoption fees will be waived for all available animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, pocket pets and reptiles.

The shelter, located at 361 S. Raymond Avenue in Pasadena, will open its doors for adoptions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. No appointment is needed.

This big adoption event comes at a critical time for Pasadena Humane. This year, the shelter has seen an increase in the number of animals entering its care compared to the previous few years.

“Our shelter is full of adoptable animals right now,” said Dia DuVernet, president and chief executive officer of Pasadena Humane.

“We have hundreds of dogs, cats, kittens and critters of all ages. We are calling on the community to adopt a new best friend as more animals continue to come in daily.”

Pasadena Humane’s Free Adoption Day in June resulted in over 120 adoptions, which shelter officials say was a record for one day.

“We were able to find loving homes for an incredible number of pets,” DuVernet added. “Records are made to be broken, so we are hoping this event will result in even more.”

All dogs and cats adopted from Pasadena Humane are spayed/neutered, microchipped and have received age-appropriate vaccines. New adopters will receive a complimentary wellness exam with a partner veterinarian and a packet filled with information about how to care for their pet.

Residents of Altadena, Arcadia, Bradbury, Glendale, La Cañada, La Crescenta, Pasadena, Monrovia, San Marino, Sierra Madre and South Pasadena will need to purchase a license for dogs over 4 months at the time of adoption. Licensing fees vary by city. Bradbury also requires a pet license for cats.

The event is open to residents of any city looking to adopt a pet. Regular adoption screening applies. Free on-site parking is available.

Overflow parking is available at Del Mar Station for a fee.

City Council Hopeful

Brandon Lamar seeks a District 3 seat with goals of achieving progressive change

Born during the height of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, a newborn Brandon Lamar was driven by his godparents out from King Drew Hospital and up the Arroyo Seco Parkway into Pasadena as the distant city burned. He spent his childhood and early adulthood developing a passion for service and a love for the community around him. Today, Lamar said he’s determined to fill Pasadena City Council’s District 3 seat.

“I not only grew up in the district, my grandparents had their church in the district and people from the district went to our church. I’ve worked in the district,” he began. “I’ve seen so much happen in our district. I’ve seen a lot of good changes happen, and I’ve also seen a lot of bad changes. I feel like we are losing culture, we’re losing history and we’re losing our identity. I think we have to have some-

body in that seat that can bridge the gap between the multi-generations of Pasadena so that we can create sustainable solutions for the district.”

While at John Muir High School, Lamar became involved in programs like the Pasadena Youth Council and Pasadena Youth Ambassadors, a group that was formed in 2001 to help provide practical work experience to high school students.

“I got involved because of my grandmother,” Lamar said. “She was a pastor in Pasadena. She passed away in 2021, but she was so involved with going against gang violence and gun violence and just making sure that people felt included in our city. … It really taught me at a young age the definition of public service.”

When he was 16, Lamar traveled across the country with the Children’s Defense Fund, a national advocacy organization led by Dr. Marian Wright Edelman that works with the federal government to promote

policies that improve children’s lives and push for state-level reforms. He spoke alongside iconic figures like memoirist and poet Maya Angelou and actor Hill Harper.

“To travel with people like Maya Angelou and speak about gun violence around our country, speak about the disparities of African Americans in our country and speak about how African Americans have the highest rate of imprisonment in our country, … it gave me the opportunity to highlight so many national things as a public servant,” Lamar said. “I saw that, in the south, they cared about housing, they cared about affordability and they cared about economic development more than more than places in California, or a place like Pasadena.”

With new insights and lived experience, Lamar felt ready to return home to Pasadena and build on his local involvement. Through the Pasadena Youth Council and Pasadena Youth Ambassadors programs and working as a recreational aid for the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, he bore witness to the disparities of neighborhoods throughout Pasadena, primarily Northwest Pasadena, which he said holds “certain stigmas,” namely the “gangs, shootings and the gun violence, the housing disparities and how many homeless people are there.”

Public service path

At 31, Lamar wanted to continue his path in public service on the Pasadena City Council by acting as a voice for members of the community that he said he feels have not been heard.

“District 3 has always been at the bottom of the totem pole when it came to solutions in our city because of the stigmas that we have of crime, of economic development and housing,” he said. “We have to take a stance to invest back into our community so that we can thrive and be successful.”

The first solution that Lamar raised was affordable housing. He said that Measure H, the Pasadena Fair and Equitable Housing charter amendment that was formed to regulate annual rent increases by capping them at 75% of the local consumer price index and implement new eviction protections, which drew both praise and criticism throughout Pasadena, “can actually help and work” for everyone.

“Our city has to create more opportunities and programs for mom-and-pop landlords to help them to stay here and thrive here as well,” he said. “Our mom-and-pop landlords help us to thrive in creating our housing industry in Pasadena, so we have to create more opportunities to help them to be sustainable here.”

Lamar also emphasized California’s lack of housing and said that the city should be more proactive in finding unused buildings that can be adapted into affordable housing and workforce development housing to help shelter the current homeless population and aid people who are on the verge of homelessness.

“I think Pasadena is a small enough city that we can commit to getting all of our homeless population off the street,” he said. “In our last homeless count, our numbers went up. I believe that happened because we haven’t created those sustainable solutions, like transitional living houses, (so) we’re not just getting people off the street and getting them into homes or into affordable housing or into their apartments.

“(We need to) get them into transitional housing so that they can transition into permanent housing and so that they can get the help and the support that they need, whether it be mental health support or substance abuse support, whether it be how to live on your own or how to budget, … how to apply for a job and things of that nature. I think that we have to start looking at those transitional living programs.”

Lamar also wants to fight against youth homelessness, as someone who has worked with Pasadena’s homeless and atrisk youth populations and as someone who was adopted.

“I grew up as every child should have: with two parents, even though they were my adoptive parents,” he said. “Even though I was in the foster care system, I actually didn’t find out that I was in the foster care system until I was about 13, 14 years old. That’s really the reason why I became the advocate I am. Even though I was in the foster care system, I didn’t have to deal with the effects of the foster care system. And the reason why I fight so hard … is because foster youths are literally at the highest of our system when it comes to disparities. When it comes to homelessness, foster care is the highest.”

Along with housing, Lamar said that

6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 07.13.23
PW NEWS

he’ll prioritize public safety and will address crime through methods of prevention instead of intervention.

“I’ve lost family and friends to gun violence. Public safety is at the forefront of my heart and my mind,” he said. “Intervening only means that we come after a shooting has happened or after an incident has happened, but we have to tackle these problems before those incidences actually happen. … We have to focus on prevention.”

His prevention methods would include creating programs that help young people with education and employment and building engagement between law enforcement and the community. While this engagement would include finding pathways for collaboration and healing in the face of traumatic histories, it would also include seeking accountability.

“Accountability is huge on both ends,” Lamar said. “I believe in accountability with our law enforcement officers when it comes to policies, procedures and how they treat the community members, but I also believe in accountability when it comes to our community members as well because there are traumas that we have inflicted on each other.

“I always tell people that law enforcement is not going anywhere, and the community is not going anywhere. We have to create healing opportunities for us to work together and be one in the community.”

The final core tenant of Lamar’s mission as a leader on the city council is environmental justice. He hopes that, going forward, he can help promote policies that bring the conversation on conservation to the forefront and create more community investment opportunities from rebate programs like the recent E-Bike Rebate Pilot Program launched by Pasadena Water and

Power on July 1.

“Those are the reasons why I’m running,” Lamar said. “We have to bring the voices of our community back to city hall, back to the policy building of our city, and we can’t forget the people who made the city.”

Achieving progressive change

Lamar emphasized that achieving progressive change in areas like housing, public safety and environmental justice can only come from collaboration between city hall and Pasadena residents. He said that it’s a line of communication that has been frail in recent years, and that an example is the history of the Community Police Oversight Commission

“Credit goes to John Kennedy, who brought the police oversight board to the city council in 2016, and they didn’t want it,” Lamar said about the late city councilperson.

“When George Floyd was killed, the community got together and we created the Community Bill of Rights, and one of the first things that we said we wanted was police accountability … that really deals with policy and procedures in our police department. At that time, they knocked us down too. It wasn’t until Anthony McClain got killed that they brought it back up to city council, then that’s when the discussion for the oversight board started happening.”

Lamar cited rent control as an example. He said it happened because of indecisiveness on behalf of the city council when it came to protecting renters or property owners.

“Since they never made a decision, and rent is so high across the city and across the state, a few people came together and said, ‘Hey, we need rent control, so we have to put it on the ballot,’” he described. “They went to city council plenty of times saying, ‘Hey, you guys have to do something about

the rent costs and the rent that’s happening in Pasadena,’ and they did nothing. The Measure 8 ballot was a direct reflection of our city council doing nothing, but the people coming together saying, ‘We have to do something about this.’

“They have not adhered to the community’s voices, and these are the same people that voted them into that seat. … Then when they got there, you don’t see the support on the dais. We have to bring back those community voices and those community empowerments into our city council chambers to make real change happen.”

From being born during the LA uprising to feeling inspired by the warmth and generosity of his adoptive family to serve others in his community, Lamar said he hopes he can help Pasadena become a more unified place, where the plights of one neighborhood are felt and acted upon by every

neighborhood. He foresees a city where young people feel more empowered to become involved in their communities and where people of all backgrounds, ages and incomes can live safe and sustainable lives.

“The greatest way for us to work and live and be together in Pasadena is for us to continue to build coalition,” Lamar said. “I’ve learned and I’ve understood that anything that lasted, anything that works, it works because we’ve done it together. So as a group organizer myself, I thrive on making sure that we have opportunities available for groups to be able to thrive and for communities to be able to thrive. It’s my hope that we can all work together and build a real coalition of community leaders, of community members, of our neighbors, of organizations and even businesses to help us create a capacity that we all can live in.”

The nomination period for the Pasadena City Council election will begin at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, and will close at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8. There will be a special election held for City Council District 3, which follows the appointment of Justin Jones made by the city council on Dec. 15, 2022, to fill an unscheduled vacancy due to the death of Councilmember John J. Kennedy. The appointed term for the District 3 representative will expire on Dec. 9, 2024. The successfully elected candidate will serve the remaining two-year unexpired term until Dec. 7, 2026.

Magic Over the Arroyo

Colorado Street Bridge Party is a novel experience

After a five-year pandemic-dictated hiatus, the Colorado Street Bridge Party is back. Hosted by Pasadena Heritage, the event allows guests to walk along the historic bridge during the only time it is closed to traffic.

“There is a magic for people to be in a place that they can’t usually be, so the very idea of being able to walk and eat and hear music and have a drink on the bridge is a unique experience that attracts an audience,” said Sue Mossman, the executive director of Pasadena Heritage.

This iconic Pasadena event dates back to 1978. The original Colorado Street

Bridge Party attracted 200 people with a few historic cars, said Mossman. However, it achieved what Pasadena Heritage’s goal: raising awareness about the deferred maintenance of the historic bridge.

Today, the Colorado Street Bridge Party is Pasadena Heritage’s signature event. Mossman said she expects 4,500 attendees. The party will include live music, family-friendly activities, an antique car show and tasting opportunities. The event is still a celebration of the historic bridge, and Mossman said she is pleased that Pasadena Heritage’s efforts have continued to raise awareness.

Tickets start at $38; children ages 12 and younger are admitted for free. Funds

Whether you’re on the bridge or looking at it from the Arroyo, I think it is very noticeable.”

Mossman called the Colorado Street Bridge the first curvilinear concrete bridge. The engineer who planned the bridge, John Alexander Lowe, used this design because there wasn’t a straight route across the Arroyo that had firm enough ground to build on. So, Lowe worked with the valley instead of against it to design the Colorado Street Bridge.

Providing a Lifeline

Cancer Support Community ‘thrilled’ to find permanent home in Sierra Madre

Cancer Support Community Greater San Gabriel Valley Executive Director Patricia Ostiller could not be more excited about the nonprofit’s new, permanent home.

“We’re just thrilled,” Ostiller said.

“I’m grateful to so many people, our donors, first and foremost, our board of directors, staff and construction team. It’s been quite a journey and it has a happy ending. We’re glad to have a permanent home.”

Thanks to the move, Cancer Support Community Greater San Gabriel Valley (Cancer Support Community) can serve more cancer patients and their families. According to Ostiller, in 2023 about 40,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer in Los Angeles County.

“Last year, we directly served a record number of participants, 1,045,” she said.

“We served another 6,000 through outreach at community health fairs.”

Cancer Support Community provides all of its programs free of charge, offering over 15 weekly and monthly support groups, over 75 educational workshops and healthy lifestyle classes, social activities, and individual support and counseling services.

“While we’re pleased to see more people reaching out to us, unfortunately it means the demand for our services has been increasing due to the uptick in cancer diagnoses,” Ostiller said.

“Our new programs are a response to this increase, and we are reaching out to communities that are often disproportionately impacted by cancer by offering services in multiple languages. In addition, we’re seeing a rise in young adults facing cancer, and we’ve created a new group to target their specific needs, which are quite different than the needs of people experiencing cancer later in life.”

The 33-year-old Cancer Support Community’s mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community, Ostiller said.

“We supplement medical treatment,” Ostiller said.

“We’re very fortunate to have wonderful hospitals in San Gabriel Valley, where people facing cancer can go for medical

treatment.

“However, in order to receive stellar comprehensive cancer care, you’ve got to take care of the emotional side of facing cancer — the anxiety, stress, and fear. We provide free professionally led support groups for cancer patients and their families, for survivors, and for those who are bereaved.”

Cancer Support Community also presents educational workshops with oncologists and other medical experts about treatments, targeted therapies, immunotherapies and nutrition and strength programs.

“Our strength instructors know how to work with someone who may have had surgery,” she added.

“They’re mindful of the fact that they’re recovering from surgery related to their cancer. We also have comedy nights that are hugely popular. People can come and forget about their diagnosis for a while. Individual counseling is available as well.

“Where else can you go and ask a doctor questions at no charge for these topics that directly affect your life?”

The service area includes the entire San Gabriel Valley and beyond, from Rancho Cucamonga to San Fernando, to Santa Clarita, and to Whittier and DTLA.

The new building — which is 7,800 square feet — opened Monday, July 10, when it resumed in-person programs, and

continued its virtual and hybrid offerings. Cancer Support Community’s new facility boasts a beautiful outdoor patio named after donors Shelley Allen and Bob Kohorst.

“To have a support group outside, looking at the mountains, in the sunshine, is so healing,” Ostiller said.

Cancer Support Community has already worked Sierra Madre into its programs with a new series called “Cancer Support in the Community,” which includes scheduled weekly outings in July for participants to meet and enjoy local businesses such as Poppy Cake, Moo Creamery, and Tacos Ensenadas.

The staff participated in the city’s recent Fourth of July parade, hosted a table at the recent health fair and spoke at the City Council, Rotary Club and Women’s Club, she said.

“We look forward to exploring the town with our community and integrating into the community,” Ostiller said.

Cancer Support Community relies solely on private donations to fund its operations. In addition to its recent Angel Gala, the nonprofit hosts two other major fundraising events, including Ladies Night Out in October and a Poker Bowl tournament

in November at Flying A Garage.

On Saturday, Aug. 26, the Symphony of Cars Gala — which precedes the Sunday, Aug. 27 San Marino Motor Classic — Cancer Support Community will once again be the beneficiary. The event, at San Marino’s Lacy Park, is an important fundraiser for Cancer Support Community.

“Aaron and Valerie Weiss, the principals in the classic, have been longtime supporters of ours,” Ostiller said. “In fact, we honored them at our June 3 Gala.”

With the commendable work Cancer Support Community has done, Ostiller said it’s still a challenge to let people in the San Gabriel Valley know about the organization.

“It still amazes me that so many people don’t know about us and our free programs,” she said.

“Sometimes people are reluctant to seek us out. They think it’s going to be depressing. Sure, there are tears at times, but our participants tell us that it’s also joyful here. We laugh and have a good time. People form friendships that last a lifetime. We offer a personal, intimate, and understanding community that gives people hope.”

Arcadia welcomes Intracorp Homes’ Miren, a new gated community Moving into the Neighborhood

Intracorp Homes celebrated the grand opening of Miren, a gated community featuring 33 new homes in Arcadia, on July 8.

The event showcased available homes, which guests toured. Attendees were also treated to desserts from the Recess Ice Cream Truck.

Partnered with IHP Capital Partners and designed by WHA Architects plus Jubilee

Interiors, the homes feature floor plans that range from 1,860 to 2,211 square feet; three to five bedrooms; and up to three bathrooms. Each home comes with an attached two-car garage.

“It’s a pretty extraordinary project. I think it’s rare that you find, you know, a new subdivision in a primarily built out community like Arcadia,” said Brad Perozzi, president of Intracorp Southern California.

The homes are walking distance from schools. Additionally, its location in South

Arcadia is ideal for those who frequent the 10, 210 and 605 freeways, making it easy to commute to destinations such as Downtown Los Angeles, Pasadena, Glendale or Burbank. Residents are also a short drive from the LA Arboretum and Botanic Garden as well as the Santa Anita Racetrack and mall.

Intracorp has built homes for more than 40 years in California as well as British Columbia, Texas, Ontario and Washington. Their communities feature townho-

mes and apartment residences.

“We really are selective on where we build,” Perozzi said.

“We only go into some of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Southern California like South Pasadena, Arcadia, Claremont, Newport Beach and Downtown Fullerton.”

Head in the Clouds

International festival returns to the Rose Bowl

Since its inception in Los Angeles, 88rising’s Head in the Clouds Music & Arts Festival has brought the label’s esteemed group of internationally acclaimed artists on a journey around the world. On the heels of its first appearance in New York, filling Queens’ Forest Hills Stadium, the festival has announced its return to Brookside at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, Aug. 5, and Sunday, Aug. 6.

“This is our fifth year of holding the Head in the Clouds festival in Los Angeles,” said Ollie Zhang, head of artist development at 88rising.

“The intention behind the festival from the beginning has been to create a place

where we can bring artists from all across Asia and around the world into one place and celebrate the breadth of talent of Asian artists, regardless of genre, regardless of where they’re coming from, and have that all here in LA.”

With returning headliners DPR Ian and DPR Live, along with flagship artists like NIKI, Rich Brian and Jackson Wang, Head in the Clouds LA will boast the full force of the 88rising label across its two stages. The collective set to perform this year will also include Rina Sawayama,

Keith Ape, Yerin Baek, ATARASHII GAKKO!, MILLI, Warren Hue and special guest Zedd, who Zhang said will bring a “fun, euphoric” performance to the festival.

“It’s a great mix of artists that have really grown with the festival over the years,” Zhang said. “We’re going to bring an even bigger and more exciting show for all of them this year. NIKI, in particular, was set to headline at last year’s festival, but unfortunately had to pull out because of COVID, so that’ll be a really highly anticipated return to the festival. She’ll be closing it out with an amazing performance as part of her world tour.

“YAOSOBI we first had in Jakarta and Manila in December last year as part of our first international festivals, so it’s really exciting to be bringing them to LA. I believe this is their first U.S. performance. Then we also have XG, who’s been blowing up over the last six months. They had just an incredible performance at the New York festival about a month ago, so we’re excited to bring that energy to LA. They’ll be playing some new songs as well.”

iteration, we’ve been able to continue to elevate and add more to the festival. … It’s great to be in Pasadena. It’s great to be adjacent to the San Gabriel Valley, where there’s such a huge Asian diaspora. It feels like the right place for this festival.”

The Head in the Clouds festival landed in Pasadena for the first time in 2021. Zhang said Brookside at the Rose Bowl has been an “amazing home” for the event.

“One of the first things that I noticed when we first went there in 2021 was just how much space there was at the venue for us to grow into,” he recalled. “Over each

Zhang described last year’s Head in the Clouds festival at Brookside as the “biggest ever in LA,” and said that he hopes this year will stand alone in terms of production value and energy.

“The energy that’s there with the crowd is incredible because there’s really no other festival where people get to see all these

artists together, and that’s mirrored backstage as well,” he explained. “All these artists are fans of each other and so there’s a real sense of community and excitement to meet each other and build with each other for this really unique festival.

“I think it’s continued to level up. I don’t want to give it all away, but … the first dance tent that we had last year, which was a huge success but definitely a little smaller in scale, we’re bringing that up to a much larger experience and booking that with a lot more artists like Mr. Carmack and TOKIMONSTA. It’s essentially functioning as like a third stage and that’s something that’s continued to grow over the last couple of years. Same thing with the main stage and the ‘double happiness stage,’ we’re bringing a lot more production to the table.”

For the fourth consecutive year, 88rising will also bring back the 626 Night Market, the largest of its type in the United States, as food curator for the festival. Named after the 626 area code region of the San Gabriel Valley and inspired by the open-air nighttime bazaars found throughout Asia, the market regularly features over 250 food, merchandise,

crafts, artists, games and entertainment attractions.

“626 Night Market has been a longstanding partner; we’ve basically worked with them since the very beginning in 2018,” Zhang said. “They’re a mainstay in the San Gabriel Valley, but also they’ve expanded across California. … They’ve

always been incredible curators of the food experience at Head in the Clouds.”

For Zhang, the inspiration behind the entire experience of 88rising’s Head in the Clouds festival was to bring together “East and West” into one space where artists from around the world can meet, collaborate and share their art with fans.

“It’s always been much more than a label,” Zhang said. “Since the beginning of the company, we’ve always sought out to be a platform, whether that’s through our festivals or anything else that we do. It’s always been about fi nding ways to highlight and uplift artists that we respect and love and believe should be seen and help tell their stories in a bigger way, … and to create this community of artists by bringing people together and bringing together the fans that love them as well. That’s still the spirit of everything that we do, and we hope to be able to channel that into even more ventures, even more music and even more artists.”

Bitter Crabs

New play’s world premiere skewers people’s inability to boost others

What if all it took to achieve one’s dreams was to help someone else succeed?

At Echo Theater Company, Bernardo Cubria’s new play, “Crabs in a Bucket” takes an approach that is funny and painful to explore how people — especially those in oppressed communities — refuse to support each other for fear that someone else might get what they want.

Director Alana Dietze, who has shepherded many new works into the American theatrical canon, said this comedy is everything she hopes to find when directing a world premiere.

“It has a combination of things that I always look for and always love, which is that it is deeply funny and incredibly painful,” Dietze said. “It also is really theatrical in a way that was new, even for me. I’ve never done a play quite like this be-

fore. It required me to use my brain in a different way and to think about the process in a slightly different way, because we’ve got people playing crabs on stage.”

Dietze said the playwright, who is a friend of hers and whose work she directed virtually during the pandemic, describes all his works as “clown plays.” In the world of this play, Dietze said that meant having a really clear, specific physical language that identifies whom the characters are and what they represent.

“The characters all have a primary emotional mask that they wear — I don’t mean a literal mask — that you could pin each of them into: this is the bitter clown, this is the optimistic clown and this is the insecure clown,” Dietze said.

“Within that, they’re still whole people, but they have a starting place that shapes everything they do. It’s the language of how they react and respond to each other. There’s a sharpness to the physicality.

For the best homes, all signs point to

There are moments that are more choreographed than naturalistic that feed into the humor.”

Clowns, she points out, can also express deep pain amid their buffoonery. The clowning element and the expressive physicality inspired her to bring in several experts to work with her on the show — experts in clowning, movement and fight choreography.

“Just having those extra layers of collaborators and thinking about the physical world in a whole different way was a bit new for me,” Dietze said. “They’ve been great collaborators all around and they’ve really made it so much better.”

The clowning consultant is Julia Davis while Ahmed Best and Tristan Waldron serve as fight choreographer and the movement coach, respectively.

Dietze said Davis gave her actors several clowning exercises to help them create the language and world of what it is to be a clown. They then worked on specific movements and comic bits that fit each character and archetype.

“They have been really instrumental in just shaping the physical language of the play,” Dietze said. “These are people that are playing crabs. What does that mean?

How do you move as a crab when you don’t have claws and 10 legs? Our costumes do provide some of those elements, but they’re not entirely literal. They have claws on their hands and they’re wearing a shell on their back, but the costume is also inspired by streetwear.”

The show’s costumer is Lou Cranch, who helped provide a setting of crabs who have gone to the big city in pursuit of their dreams.

Waldron helped the actors find movements that made them look like crabs and to find ways to express humor with their claws and bodies.

“(Waldron) was really instrumental in building the theatrical moments where the crabs are trying to escape the bucket and doing that in a way that’s safe and effective and dramatic — because we don’t, of course, have an actual bucket that they can climb, so we had to make that happen theatrically,” Dietze said.

The play features Jordan Hull, Anna LaMadrid, Xochitl Romero and Michael Sturgis as the four crabs who are living in a shucking bucket. Amargo has been in the bucket the

longest and is the most jaded and bitter of the four crabs — and the one who believes they are the best and most deserving of escape.

Pootz is their sidekick, a loyal, devoted and loving friend who adores Amargo but isn’t very bright. Then Young Beb arrives.

“Beb is this young, idealistic — like, just landed in Hollywood or New York City and believes that they are going to be the next big thing, and more than that, believes they can save the world,” Dietz said. “They have the answers to make this place more loving and beautiful and utopian.”

Mamon used to be Amargo’s best friend. They’re the crab who got out, but then returned.

“Part of the unfolding of their story is learning why Mamon has come back to the bucket, which is not a normal thing,” Dietze said.

The playwright built the play around the trope that if a single crab is placed in a bucket, it can easily climb to freedom. If there are multiple crabs, each one who tries to climb up will be pulled back down by the others, ensuring that no crab will make it out.

“What happens when we can’t be happy for the success of others?” Cubria asked. “Sometimes, in communities where there are limited opportunities, we think, ‘If he

gets a slot, there won’t be one left for me,’ and we get down on each other. Why can’t we support one another? Whenever oppressed groups come together, we win.”

Cubria was inspired to write “Crabs in a Bucket” based on his experience in the Latinx theater community, but Dietze said the piece is so universal that it could apply to any group.

Cubria, a Mexican-born playwright and screenwriter, has won numerous awards for his works. His play “The Giant Void in My Soul” was nominated for awards from Ovation, Stage Raw and the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle in 2019.

Dietze said composer Arian Saleh and sound designer Jeff Gardner are creating original music for the show.

“It contributes to the landscape of crab life,” Dietze said. “It’s a little quirky; it’s fun. There are some strange sounds in there. Also, there’s music that gets very dark as the crabs fight harder and harder to get out of the bucket.”

Like other existential plays in the genre, “Crabs in a Bucket” emphasizes the use of silence, so Dietze said they’re particular about music placement.

bucket, Dietze explained. It isn’t a literal bucket, but they took inspiration from urban decay and city trash. The bucket is a place where things are discarded — whether that is an old billboard, a skate ramp, a cargo net or an old kids’ climbing structure. They’ve gathered debris to communicate the detritus of years spent in a chum bucket.

Much of the audience of Echo Theater Company is made up of other theater people, Dietze said. They are involved in artistic creation. “Crabs in a Bucket” will resonate with this audience.

“It’s bold, it’s funny, it’s heartfelt,” Dietze said. “The other thing that I tend to look for when I’m reading a play is for it to have something that I’ve never seen on stage before and this definitely has things I’ve never seen on stage before.”

Kings of Soul

Trio of singers revives a lost art

Darren Lorenzo, Chester Gregory and Michael Lynche are reviving a lost art of singing as the Kings of Soul.

“We thought it would be good to do not only Motown songs, but soul songs,” Lorenzo said, calling from Novi, Michigan, where he was attending a workshop.

“The soul songs of the ’70s and ’80s are lost. Motown is so popular as a sound and ‘Motown’ became a style. The soul songs are forgotten.”

They’ll bring that sound to the Pasadena Pops Rusnak Summer Concert Series on Saturday, July 15, at Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens.

Resident Pops Conductor Larry Blank will lead the orchestra with Kings of Soul, who will shine a spotlight on the hit songs of Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Otis Redding, The Temptations, Al Green, Barry White and Smokey Robinson.

Highlights include “Soul Man,” “Shop Around,” “Get Ready,” “Try a Little Tenderness,” “Stand by Me,” “Move on Up” and “Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher.”

“We do a lot of the men of soul,” Lorenzo said.

“I sing ‘You’ll Never Find,” along with the O’Jays, Temptations, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls, Al Green, James Brown, Smokey Robinson, The Drifters, Ben E. King, Manhattans, Dramatics, Lionel Ritchie and Michael Jackson.

“You name it, we touch on it. The entire show is about 40 songs. Each person has 10 songs each, as far as solos. The other 10 are group songs.”

Formed three years ago, Kings of Soul boasts showbiz veterans.

Born in Atlanta, Lorenzo has performed on cruise ships; in Vegas; and international touring productions of “After Midnight,” “Vegas the Show,” “Legally Blonde,” “Saturday Night Fever,” “Madagascar,” “Smokey Joe’s Café,” “No Strings,” “Fosse,” “Hair,” “Tony and Tina’s Wedding,” “Once on This Island” and “What the World Needs Now.”

In addition to acting and singing, he also works as a writer, producer, teacher, director and performs with various club dates and corporate Top 40, R&B/soul and jazz bands.

He’s lived in Europe, New York City, Las Vegas and Florida to advance his career.

“I’ve always wanted to be a performer, singer, dancer,” he said. “I broke away when I went to college and did hotel management and such. I went back to the music industry, which took me to the theater world.

“I did a lot of American tours, Canadian tours and international tours out of Europe, Lebanon and China. That kept me in the theater world, but I kept returning to singing. I’ve solely been doing music for the past five years.”

Gregory, who records under the moniker Chess, hails from the hometown of Michael Jackson — Gary, Indiana.

Gregory’s Broadway credits include “The Jackie Wilson Story,” “Hairspray,” “Tarzan,” “Cry-Baby,” “Dreamgirls” and “Sister Act.” He is the recipient of the NAACP Theatre Award. He’s been awarded Honorary State Representative for Indiana.

An “American Idol” season nine alum, Lynche recalls Donny Hathaway, Al Green, Luther Vandross and Sam Cooke.

“Big Mike,” as he was known on “Idol,” has played intimate jazz and blues clubs, 20,000-seat arenas and opera halls with 100-piece orchestras backing him. He’s the co-creator of Kings of Soul.

“Michael and (co-founder) Jeff Tyzik thought I would be a good fit for Kings of Soul,” Lorenzo said.

They asked Lorenzo to fill in for Lynche in a sister show, “Dancing in the Street.” That, Lorenzo said, was the test to star in “Kings of Soul.”

So far, “Kings of Soul” has performed in 10 cities, and the singers hope to add to that list. Formed three years ago, the pandemic shut down the show temporarily.

“We were able to get to Texas — Fort Worth and Dallas — and Colorado last year,” he said. “Now we’re trying to branch out to California, which brings us out to Pasadena. It’s been a fun ride. Life doesn’t suck that much.”

Parade Lessons

Students introduced to STEM through floats

The Pasadena Tournament of Roses has partnered with Cal Poly Rose Float on an educational program, RoseSTEM presented by SoCalGas.

The program included field trips to the Cal Poly Rose Float facility, where middle and high school students were introduced students to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) concepts used to create a Rose Parade presented by Honda float, including hands-on experience.

Cal Poly Rose Float, a group of college students, shared their expertise in float construction, design and decoration.

Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo have continuously participated in the parade since 1949 and their floats have led in introducing technology to the parade, including the first use of hydraulics for animation in 1968 and the first use of computer-controlled animation in 1978.

“Partnering with the Tournament of Roses, allows our club to engage young students to understand how STEAM is used daily in designing, planning, and building our float each year,” said Cary Khatab, director of Cal Poly Rose Float.

“Cal Poly Universities Rose Float is a 76-year-old tradition that exemplifies the ‘Learn by Doing’ philosophy and emphasizes our student’s Career Readiness initiatives that prepare them to enter the workforce ready to work on Day One.”

During the sessions, Cal Poly Rose Float and representatives from SoCalGas brought their knowledge to the program.

“It’s exciting to see students in the RoseSTEM Program put learning into practice by designing and creating a Rose Parade float. We couldn’t be prouder to support their efforts,” said Trisha Muse, director of community relations at SoCalGas.

“We’re going to need these bright students’ creativity, ingenuity and hard work

to tackle the challenges and create solutions toward a cleaner future.”

More than 150 students from the greater Pasadena area participated thanks to the support of community partners; Adelante Youth Alliance, STEAM:CODERS, Day One and Stars.

“The RoseSTEM program provides our students with a safe space to explore their curiosities while learning how STEM concepts are actualized in real-world situations,” said Melissa Estrada, executive director of Adelante Youth Alliance.

“This program aligns with our mission to inspire and educate youth with the examples of ingenuity, collaboration, and leadership shared by the diverse students of the Cal Poly Pomona Rose Float Lab. The RoseSTEM program promotes a college-going culture and increases interest in pursuing STEM. Bringing students together for this experience builds a sense of community with encouragement to design, construct and decorate their futures with passion.”

Raymond Ealy, founder/executive director of STEAM:CODERS, added, “STEAM:CODERS is extremely excited to have joined forces with the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, SoCalGas and Cal Poly Pomona (Rose Float Club), offering students an opportunity to learn about the engineering behind a parade float. 40 middle and high school students from the Pasadena area participated in this RoseSTEM event. Clever Carolla

Comedian, podcaster enjoys the sporting life

Adam Carolla did not grow up dreaming of being a famous podcaster. If anything, a young version of the popular, enduring on-air personality envisioned himself enjoying the sporting life at the highest levels.

“I played high school football,” he said. “On offense, I played guard and on defense I played inside linebacker. I led the team in tackles and was named Best Defensive Player at North Hollywood High in 1981. I even got recruited by some smaller colleges.

“But because my family was poor and downtrodden, and I couldn’t fill out the applications, I never went to that next level. ... I also played baseball, but I was more passion-

ate about football. Just one of the many ways I’m like Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders.”

Or maybe the clever Carolla could have been the next great Lakers star. It seems like a birthright.

“As my fans know, my parents were too lazy to give me a middle name so when it came time to get my license, I just threw ‘Lakers’ in there on a whim. I’m an LA guy, so it made sense. Still waiting for those season tickets though. Maybe I’ll change it to Clippers next time I have to renew,” he said.

“Podcasting is in my blood. My father was a podcaster. My grandfather was a podcaster. My great grandfather was podcasting on a steamer from Italy on its way to Ellis Island. So, of course, I grew up wanting to be a podcaster.

“I’m being a jerk, but podcasting wasn’t

even a thing when I started doing it in 2009. I was essentially just trying to figure out a way to stay connected to my radio audience.”

The podcast part of that naturally is tongue in cheek. The medium did not become widely popular until some 10 years ago, yet Carolla owns a Guinness World Records mark for the most downloaded podcast: the popular “The Adam Carolla Show” podcast, which drops for free five days a week via PodcastOne and can be heard anywhere podcasts are available.

Why has it been so successful?

“I have so much success in the medium because even though I don’t understand the technology of it, I understand the importance of being real and staying connected to your audience,” Carolla said.

“Listening to a million hours of talk radio driving to and then busting my tail on construction sites taught me how to authentically connect with people.”

A former carpenter, Carolla is everywhere. His resume is incredibly unique.

He was the co-host and co-creator of “The Man Show” with Jimmy Kimmel. He was the co-host of the nationally syndicated radio callin show “Loveline” with Dr. Drew Pinsky.

“When we did a ‘Man Show’ bit with Tommy Lasorda, he said he could have coached me onto the roster of the Dodgers,” Carolla recalled.

“He thought I had some pop in my bat, and I still take that as a huge compliment from an L.A. sports legend. I also got to play in a couple celebrity games at Dodger Stadium and it’s just cool being on that field.”

Carolla was a regular on “Crank Yankers,” yet another show he cocreated, and other Carolla-led popular TV projects include a home improvement show on TLC, and a car show on Speed.

“I do a lot of vintage racing, so if you count that in terms of what kind of athlete I am these guys, there is that,” said the soon to be 60-year-old.

Speaking of automobiles, Carolla is now paired with another legendary comedian, actor and fellow car enthusiast in Jay Leno. The duo is partnering with the producers of Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp to launch the first Comedy Fantasy Camp. Taking place in

Hollywood, the new experience will offer participants the opportunity to work with premier comedy talent this October.

“LA is such a disaster as far as traffic and parking; I don’t know how anyone can get to a game on time,” Carolla said.

“If you want to see the Rams opening game at SoFi, you have to leave your house sometime around Memorial Day. I’ll leave early if it’s a blowout, but if it’s a good game I’ll hang out.”

Throughout his many incarnations in the entertainment industry, Carolla’s great passion for sports has not been too far behind. Nor is his well-known cutting humor.

“I’m a Rams fan and I’m glad LA has a team again. There were a lot of dark years there where I had to root for St. Louis, even though I couldn’t find it on a map,” said Carolla, also the author of two books that have reached New York Times bestseller status.

Comedian, actor, radio personality, host and author — currently on tour with his stand-up The Adam Carolla Show act, which includes many upcoming dates in Southern California, the longtime area resident also has a tremendous passion for boxing … and he has been able to marry that with his full-time gig in entertainment.

“I always had an interest in boxing and had done some amateur stuff. I had a friend who went to college with a guy who owned a chain of gyms called Bodies in Motion,” Carolla said.

“I met him and offered to teach there and was promptly counter offered to buzz off because I wasn’t an ex-pro. But I counter-counter-offered to use my construction background to hang the speed bags and generally spruce up the place in exchange for the chance to teach a class. I started assisting one of the regular teachers and when they eventually opened another location in Pasadena, I was able to help build it in exchange for teaching three or four classes a week. I’ve always liked coaching people up.

“That’s why I’m excited about this Comedy Fantasy Camp I’m doing with Jay Leno. And being a boxing instructor directly led me to meeting Jimmy Kimmel and striking up a friendship and partnership that continues to this day. Boxing is directly connected to me having a broadcasting and comedy career.”

El Clásico de México

Club América and Club Deportivo Guadalajara to play at the Rose Bowl

Throughout its 100-year history, the Rose Bowl Stadium has welcomed the largest soccer events in the world to Pasadena, from historic Men’s and Women’s World Cups to summertime invitationals with European giants. On Sunday, Oct. 15, two of Mexico’s most sucessful clubs will take the pitch at the iconic venue.

Known as El Clásico de México, the meeting of Club América and Club Deportivo Guadalajara is one the most highly anticipated contests in Mexican sport, marked on the calendars of millions of fans each year.

Both sides have enjoyed success as the Liga MX’s two most decorated clubs, with América winning 13 domestic titles, their most recent being the 2018 Apertura, and Guadalajara winning 12, their most recent being the 2017 Clausura. They also share a 65-year history as bitter rivals.

One of the defining differences between the two clubs, aside from their geographical distance, has been their transfer policies. Guadalajara has been known to only sign Mexican players, while América has historically broken the bank to bring in foreign talent.

As businessman and América owner Emilio Azcárraga Milmo once famously said, “With their Mexican players, Chivas (Guadalajara) are the good guys. But we’re going to buy the best foreigners and become the bad guys.”

Despite the animosity between the two clubs,

their contest at the Rose Bowl will be played as a friendly match and have no impact on their competitive season in the 2023 Clausura. It’s played during the international break that stretches from Oct. 12 to Oct. 17.

Arriving at the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, this year’s El Clásico de México will feature cultural and entertainment events leading up to the match as well as a pre-kickoff Fan Fest with live music, food and legendary players from both clubs.

“I tell you from my own experience, Los Clásicos are always beautiful whether or not they are played in your stadium, inside or outside your country, and we want Mexican football to continue making itself known,” Guadalajara Sporting Director Fernando Hierro said. “In addition, in Los Angeles there is a wonderful community of Mexicans, so it’s going to be a great show.”

Rose Bowl officials said the match is expected to be the largest Mexican-themed celebration held this year in the United States. The last time that El Clásico was held in LA, it drew a crowd of over 60,000 fans into the stands of the LA Coliseum in 2018.

“It’s going to be a great party,” América President Santiago Baños said. “It’s unbelievable to be in this venue with 90,000 fans from both of the biggest teams in Mexico.

“Not just the game, the whole week is going to be a party for the fans, for the Latino people that live here. … We’re really excited to be here in October and have a huge celebration for them.”

POTENTIAL BIDDERS:

If you are considering bidding on this property

lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER:

The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponeme nts be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 4777869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 104538-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NO-
