A Living, Breathing Mirror in Central Park

P

eter Georges, the owner of Hash and Rodini Park, recently invited me and my team for a pre-opening lunch at the Conference Room, his new restaurant and lounge in The Bluffs office park. The food was amazing, and so was the service. When I noticed our pixie-like server Desi had an accent, I was intrigued to know why she was in Playa Vista all the way from Bulgaria. Desi told me that after she and her twin sister Gracie performed a hiphop dance routine on the hit show “So You Think You Can Dance,” they decided to come to Los Angeles to pursue a professional dance career. And that’s how this magazine’s cover story was born. My photographer Maria Martin decided the perfect backdrop for shooting the sisters would be Playa Vista’s iconic Central Park. Unbeknownst to me, a stream full of tiny fish runs northwest through the park, behind the Wallis Annenberg PetSpace. It turned out to be an enchanting location. The dancers arrived looking angelic in pink flowy gowns. As they posed precariously on rocks in the center of the water — Gracie in high heels! — I stood on the edge of the stream, holding a silver reflector hoping to bounce a little extra light on their lovely identical faces. Light on the water below the sisters cast a spectral reflection of a very real bodily reflection above. Thanks to Maria’s talent and keen eye, I found it to be a metaphorical experience. As Desi and Gracie danced and posed for the camera, it was fun to observe them lower their voices as they switched into Bulgarian, using it as their own twin shorthand. Near the stream is a corridor of trees with a narrow sand walk. As the sun began to set, I could imagine the sisters as sprites, frolicking amongst the trees. Some of the most striking photographs from the shoot are when the twins gaze deep into each other’s eyes, as if they are each staring into a living, breathing mirror. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading their story that’s illustrated with some of my favorite photographs yet. Shanee Edwards Managing Editor · editor@playavistadirect.com

Playa Vista Moms Group Labor Day Parade @ Crescent Park The annual Playa Vista Moms Group Labor Day Parade rolled out on Sept. 2, as little fingers decorated their trikes, scooters, buggies and prams in stars and stripes on the holiday that marks the unofficial end of summer. Though too young to belong to a trade union or hold down a vocation of their own, these patriotic youngsters circled the sidewalks of Crescent Park in solidarity with their parents, pets and popsicles, turning the holiday into a labor of love. Adding to the fun was a visit from firefighters with Playa Vista’s own Fire Station 67, whom they thanked with hand-painted posters and hugs. America’s future workforce got to sit inside the big red firetruck and imagine all the heroic deeds that fill the life of a brave firefighter. — Shanee Edwards 10 Playa Vista Direct | October · November 2019

Firefighter Appreciation Celebration @ Concert Park Playa Vista’s own Los Angeles Fire Station 67 got some love from local families and businesses on the evening of Sept. 27, continuing an annual tradition started by Brookfield Residential Director of Experience Sandra Kitashima. Though there haven’t been any actual structure fires in the community, local firefighters stay busy. According to Capt. Quinlan, they mostly respond to automatic alarms. “When Playa Vista was first being built, they had a lot of automatic alarms going off, just working out the bugs.” And then there are medical emergencies. “People are always going to have medical problems so that’s what we’re here for.” Kitashima received a Certificate of Appreciation from L.A. City Councilman Mike Bonin for her “deep commitment to the community.” “It’s an honor to be recognized for building community,” she said, “and giving back. It brings me great joy and heartfelt gratitude to receive such an accolade.” — Shanee Edwards 12 Playa Vista Direct | October · November 2019

Best Of The Westside Party @ Wallis Annenberg PetSpace Winners of the The Argonaut’s annual Best of the Westside readers’ poll flocked to the Annenberg PetSpace on Sept. 26 to celebrate with food and beverages provided by local restaurants. Café del Rey shucked oysters on the half shell, Benny’s Tacos grilled chicken quesadillas, The Shack served hot wings, and Tony P’s Dockside Grill poured their famous mai tais. Kinecta Federal Credit Union sponsored the event. This year’s Best of the Westside issue also celebrated local animal rescue and adoption agencies that are literally saving the lives of cats, dogs, birds, rabbits and farm animals. That’s why PetSpace made the perfect location for the party — guests could sip and nibble before heading upstairs to meet available cats and dogs. The Argonaut publishes Best of the Westside each fall as a reminder to support the local small businesses, schools and institutions that contribute to local culture and quality of life. — Shanee Edwards 14 Playa Vista Direct | October · November 2019

“Downton Abbey,” tea and actress Lesley Nicol @ Cinemark Playa Vista A bit of the English countryside came to Cinemark Playa Vista on Saturday, Sept. 21, to celebrate the release of the feature film “Downton Abbey,” based on the beloved television series. Finger sandwiches, tiny cakes and macarons were served with tea in a spread so elegant it would’ve made Mrs. Patmore herself beam with pride. Speaking of Mrs. Patmore, Lesley Nicol — the actress who plays the nononsense chef — made a special appearance before the screening. Ms. Nicol stood patiently on the step-and-repeat while costumed fans posed for selfies with the award-winning actress. Once every last fan had a photograph, Ms. Nicol departed in her carriage and we went to watch the film. The story centers around the Crawleys and staff as they prepare for an impending visit from King George V and Queen Mary. Full of wit, romance and tears, I give the film two pinkies way up. — Shanee Edwards 16 Playa Vista Direct | October · November 2019

Sisters in Step Twin dancers double down on the American Dream Story by Jessica Koslow | Photos by MAria MArtin

“Y

ou guys are the cutest things on planet Earth,” gushed “So You Think You Can Dance” judge Vanessa Hudgens. “My heart is melting for you guys.” “You guys are adorable,” added judge Mary Murphy. “I wish I could be your sister.” For 25-year-old twins Gratsiela (Gracie) and Desislava (Desi) Sandeva of Dobrich, Bulgaria, being on “So You Think You Can Dance” Season 15 was a dream come true — from the day they applied for the hit show online to the moment they stepped on the stage to audition in front of a live audience and TV cameras in New York City. “Our life has changed for sure — for good, of course,” says Gracie. “I think we are the same Desi and Gracie from before, we are just more confident in ourselves. There was also a few times that little kids on the streets recognized us from the show.” Although they didn’t make the cut, Gracie and Desi are not giving up their dreams just yet. “Our biggest dream since our childhood was to be actresses in the U.S.,” says Gracie. “We have always imagined that we will be filming together with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.” If the past is any indication of what the future holds, this dream might come true. As high school students in Bulgaria, the twins and their friends didn’t have the opportunity to watch American TV, so they watched “So You Think You Can Dance” episodes on YouTube on their phones. Desi and Gracie attempted to learn all the cho-

reography from the show. Their favorite contestant was Stephen “Twitch” Boss, who, fast forward 10 years, was at the table of judges watching the twins groove on Season 15. The Sandeva twins are readymade for fame, sporting bright smiles, fit bodies and energy to spare. One of their most appealing attributes is … there are two of them. They’ve never been separated. “We are so grateful and blessed that we have each other and we know what it is to always look after someone,” Desi says. “Me and Gracie, we are so close, since [we were] kids. Our parents taught us that. For us, our family is first — always.” Like many dancers their age, Desi and Gracie’s passion to move began by watching the film “Step Up” starring Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan. “Our family couldn’t pay for us both

to take dance classes,” says Gracie. “In school, we had our own group of girls, and we made choreography together by watching videos.” About two years ago, the twins landed in Miami Beach on an internship program at a golf country club. “We had a really difficult time at the beginning, everything was new — new people, new place, new home, so far away from our family and for such a long period,” says Gracie. “One day, I had a really bad day at work. Crying on my way home, I realized that if you are not happy where you are, you are the only person that can make the change. Nobody else will make it for you. I went online looking for castings, and then I saw that there was a ‘SYTYCD’ audition. us practicing a dance show that we used to do every night when we were hotel entertainers back in Bulgaria.” “I received an email to expect a phone call the next day,” Gracie continues. “When I saw the email, I was screaming like crazy, and running to my sister to show her the email. The first thing she said was, ‘Gracie, this is our miracle, our dream will come true!’” Twins Sandeva are still pursuing a career in entertainment while working at the Conference Room in Playa Vista, where they might start teaching classes soon. “We are blessed that we may not have had the perfect parents, but they were the perfect parents for us,” says Gracie. “They didn’t have everything that they wanted us to have, but they gave us something more important: the courage to start taking care of ourselves since age 17. We do all of this because of them: Mama Vesi

and Tati Alex, obichame vi [Mom and Dad, we love you]!” Check out Gracie and Desi on their YouTube channel and Instagram: twinssandev.

Alexis & Joe: A Playa Vista Love Story Local lovebirds get engaged with a Rose Ceremony of their own

F

Story By Kelby Vera | Photos by Nikki Ryan Photography

or Alexis Wirth and Joe Talarico, Playa Vista is more than home — it’s where their fairytale love story began … and still continues every day as they walk their dog Everly around the neighborhood, catch a movie or eat together at one of their favorite spots along Millennium Drive. But their romance might never have happened without a trip to the gym back in 2014. Then-single Alexis had decided it was time to focus on herself, so she joined the local LA Fitness and invested in a personal trainer. The situation was business-as-usual until her original trainer got promoted and Alexis was passed off to a new guy — Joe. At first she was annoyed at being ditched, but Joe made everything more than all right. “At first I was kind of disappointed,” she recalls, ”but then when I saw who he was, and I was like ‘Well, hello.’” There was instant chemistry, but the pair kept things professional. It seems the universe had other plans for them, however. Alexis kept running into Joe at the grocery store and other spots around town. They exchanged phone numbers because of Alexis’ busy schedule, and soon conversations about the gym turned into chats about real life. Bonding over their half-Filipino heritage, love of “The Bachelor” and quirky senses of humor, there was a spark. Joe, a gentleman of the truest form, knew he couldn’t be the first one to make a move. Luckily, Alexis didn’t hesitate to take the first step. “After about a month [of training together], I just said: ‘Are you going to ask me out or what?’” While their connection was clear, their first date had a few bumps. They started the night

Romantics to the core, Alexis Wirth and Joe Talarico celebrate their engagement with pup Everly in style at The Resort

at Sweet Fish, one of Alexis’ go-to spots. Though she was in her element, Joe felt like he was under the microscope. “All the sushi guys were like her chaperones,” he recalls, laughing. “So they were already protective of her. … For this guy to be coming in and taking her on a date, they were keeping an eye on her.” But the duo soared through their conversation and, just like that, the couple was inseparable. Seeing as they were spending all of their time together, it only made sense for him to move into her Fountain Park spot three weeks later. Five idyllic years together led to their March 2019 proposal, which was an epic affair. Inspired by their mutual love of “The Bachelor” franchise, Joe knew he had to go all out. He wrangled all their closest friends and family to a gorgeous spot in Long Beach overlooking the water. There, they had their own Rose Ceremony — a staple of Bachelor Nation — with their own personal camera crew there to document everything. But the night was far from over after their TV star moment. After Joe got down on one knee, he whisked Alexis away on a helicopter. The couple arrived home to a stunning sushi spread. With Playa Vista as the setting of their story, they knew exactly where their engagement photos had to be: the ultrachic Playa Vista fitness center The Resort. It would be easy to mistake the couple for celebrities in the pictures, with Alexis’ long raven hair and Joe’s razor-sharp jawline. But their sense of humor and all around charm can’t help but shine through in the pictures. Alexis looks radiant in a plunging white gown as she slips into the role of a Real Housewife of Playa Vista, sipping champagne and sauntering around The Resort with their charming Chihuahua. All the while, Joe plays the part of the hunky pool boy, chiseled trainer and, of course, doting other half. “I know it’s over the top, but it was also hilarious,” Alexis says with a laugh. Though there is tons of planning to do for the wedding, the couple is going about life as usual, spending time at their jobs — Joe at Upgrade Labs in Santa Monica, Alexis as an Operations Analyst at Swenson He — and just soaking in the pleasure of the community in their off-time. Their obsession with the romantic even bleeds into their hobbies. The duo host a hilarious relationship podcast called The RelationSH*T Show, where they discuss their very different strategies for making love work. And since none of it would have happened without a simple Playa Vista connection, this community will always hold a special place in their hearts. “I am not leaving this town,” Alexis says proudly. “It’s too perfect.” Playa Vista Direct | October · November 2019 29

The Katherine Johnson STEM Academy is leveraging a Google grant to produce STEM wizards with strong people skills

Story By Shanee Edwards | Photos by Kyle Hunsberger

laya Vista resident Kyle Hunsberger is the principal of the Katherine Johnson STEM Academy, just around the corner in Westchester. Part of the Loyola Marymount University Family of Schools, it serves as the LAUSD resident middle school for students in the Playa Vista, Playa del Rey and Westchester communities. If you’re not familiar with the acronym STEM, it stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Integrating these disciplines has been part of an overall push in education in the United States to meet the needs of a competitive workforce. You may remember the school’s namesake, NASA engineer Katherine Johnson, was portrayed by actress Taraji

P. Henson in the 2016 film “Hidden Figures.” But it’s not the school’s Hollywood connection that’s exciting. It’s the connection to Silicon Beach — specifically to Google. Last fall the school became the recipient of a $50,000 grant from Google through their Tides Foundation to build out a STEM lab on campus. Hunsberger says the grant was made possible through a connection at Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin’s office. “[Bonin] had toured our school,” he says, “and knew that we were making STEM available to all our students. He’s the one who recommended us.” Hunsberger is happy to report the partnership has been flourishing, providing students with unique opportunities.

Last spring a group of 25 students were invited to participate in a “Diversity in STEM” panel at Google’s local Spruce Goose campus. Students were also invited to the Google I/O Extension event at the company’s Venice headquarters, the Binoculars Building. “Two of our students went. We set up a table and they demonstrated their fuel cell car they created in their math class and presented some artwork they made with micro-robots. It was a cool event where people could learn about our school and see what our kids are doing,” Hunsberger says. As for the $50,000 grant, he’s taking the long view on spending the money. “Right now we’ve spent about half of it outfitting the STEM lab with

instruction materials that are really going to help our students achieve: drones, Go-Pros, computing equipment, robotics equipment, Makey Makeys, Arduinos. I’m still learning myself what all the resources can be used for, thanks to our LMU curriculum developer who has done a tremendous job launching and organizing it.” Hunsberger adds that he really gets the sense that Google wants to make an impact on the younger generation: “Some companies invest in a school, but it’s a one-and-done thing. But with Google I’ve felt like it’s a sustained commitment since we got into partnership with them just over a year ago — I’ve been thrilled.” The grant will also help the Katherine Johnson STEM Academy buttress its

dedication to social-emotional learning. “Why we started as a school was to give kids a clear connection between STEM and social and emotional learning, even though that doesn’t necessarily sound intuitive.” Hunsberger says it’s one thing to teach kids to graph parabolas or design code, but STEM is more: It’s real-world problem solving. “Ultimately problem solving happens in the context of community. Communities are made up of all kinds of people. Before we opened the school two years ago, we realized that if we don’t focus on social and emotional learning, all of our focus on STEM won’t go anywhere because if I just produce a bunch of robots who are good at math but can’t have a

human connection, there’s no context in which they’re going to succeed. You need to know how to work on a team, get feedback from a peer or handle conflict.” He says the nexus of STEM and social-emotional learning comes through an educational approach called problembased learning. It’s where kids select problems they care about and work to solve them. “Everybody gets excited about it. I was in a math class today where the teacher connected the Pythagorean Theorem to disaster relief. All 26 kids were 100% engaged.” Find out more about the Katherine Johnson STEM Academy at kjstemacademy.org. Playa Vista Direct | October · November 2019 33

7 Signs Your Child Might Have a Learning Disorder With kids back in school, a Playa Vista educational therapist has some advice Story By Dr. Bibi Pirayesh | Photo by Maria Martin

I

n my practice as an educational therapist I often get parents wondering if their child is in need of testing. While parents may be wary of a culture of over-testing diagnosis, avoiding necessary testing can have detrimental effects for children who need help. Below are seven signs parents can look for if they feel their child is not quite where they need to be in terms of their academics. •

Early delays in hitting developmental milestones. The brain develops in layers. Many of the skills children are expected to learn in school (such as reading) organize on top of skills that should have developed long before school (such as language). If your child experienced delays in motor or language development in their first three years, and you now see them struggle in school, it might be worth taking a closer look.

Trauma in the early years. Many people think of trauma as extreme events. The fact is a simple ear infection can result in the types of auditory delays that hinder reading later on. Look back into your child’s early history to see if there may have been events that relate to current struggles.

A history of learning difficulties in the family. Research does not support a purely genetic basis for

34 Playa Vista Direct | October · November 2019

“Winner Best Dry Cleaner 2019” learning disabilities, but difficulties like ADHD and dyslexia can “run in the family.” Parents sometimes report having the same struggles as their child (revisiting their own pain can prevent them from diving deeper into their child’s struggles). •

Homework time is a nightmare. Some of the students I see manage to get good grades in school, but those grades come at a high price. Homework should never feel so challenging that it results in fights, meltdowns, or hours of work and distress. Always check with teachers to see how long assigned homework is expected to take. You think your child is just lazy. Cognitive weaknesses can cause children to completely disconnect from school. In fact apathy, or laziness, is often a sure sign children are overwhelmed. Kids with intact learning skills enjoy learning. When learning itself is a chore, kids tend to disconnect. You child is not meeting grade-level standards. Children do develop at different rates but if your child has had one to two years of instruction in reading and still cannot read, or has tried continuously to learn math facts and simply cannot, there may be something deeper going on. Difficulty following directions, planning, and organizing. Children with attentional and executive function difficulties cannot manage many aspects of their lives. Difficulty planning school projects, remembering homework, a constant messy room, having difficulty getting dressed in time, not being able to wait their turn to speak, and needing directions repeated multiple times are common signs.

This is not a comprehensive list, and having these signs does not necessarily mean a child has processing delays or requires a full battery of testing. However, if you find yourself wondering about some of these signs, it might be time to ask the learning specialist at your child’s school or a professional educational therapist about a quick processing screening to flag any problem areas. Contact Dr. Pirayesh via laeducationaltherapy.com. Bibi Pirayesh is the founder/Educational Therapist at The Learning Tree and works with many children in Playa Vista

5 Fabulous Lunches Under $15

From a healthy falafel bowl to a nostalgic Frito pie, you’ll love these modestly priced meals in Playa Vista’ By Angela Matano

Lunch can be a lot of things: rushed, cheap, non-existent, or a slapped-together PB&J from home. Sometimes, though, something better is called for — something nutritious, filling and delicious. Whether you are looking for a healthy choice or a caloric splurge, here are five options under $15 to grab and go or sit down like a civilized person and eat. Bring a friend. 36 Playa Vista Direct | October · November 2019

The Classic Burger at Gulp

We’re talking about a tower of beef, lettuce, tomato and white onions. Seriously, the bun needs a toothpick to keep everything together. The patty (a blend of short rib, brisket and chuck) bursts with juicy flavor and a scrumptious bit of char. You could absolutely share this burger; although, let’s be honest, you probably won’t want to. Fries are included, either regular or sweet potato — or, if you insist, a side of salad might make you feel a little more virtuous. Then again, for a buck or two more you can layer on cheese, bacon or avocado. 13020 Pacific Promenade, Ste. 1 | (310) 496-3966 | gulpbrewco.com

Tocaya Organica’s Taco Combo

You really can eat good Mexican food without any diet guilt. For just $9.95 you get two tacos (any style), a side, and a drink. The way the menu works, you choose a taco that appeals to your senses and then add protein and a queso of your choice. Right now the Zuma taco is the seasonal option, brimming with a radish citrus slaw and vegan chipotle crema. Tomatillo shrimp and queso fresco are recommended additions. Other options include achiote chicken, beef chorizo, jalapeño jack, and vegan mozzarella. A cucumber mint agua fresca and shaved Brussels sprouts salad make for the perfect light lunch. 12150 Millennium Drive, Ste.101 | (424) 289-6105 | tocayaorganica.com

Frito Pie in a Bag at HomeState

A grownup indulgence with a whiff of nostalgia baked in, the Frito Pie in a Bag at HomeState is reminiscent of school days and impossibly addictive. The melt-in-your-mouth chili con carne mixes beautifully with the crunchy Fritos, shredded orange cheese, lettuce, sour cream and chopped up tomatoes, and it’s elevated just enough with the addition of pickled jalapeños and pickled red onions. Served in an actual Fritos bag, this meal is a steal for $7, and there is a vegetarian option as well. If you don’t have to hurry back to work, indulge in a refreshing spicy Paloma cocktail — a combination of grapefruit, chili and tequila. 12105 E. Waterfront Drive, Ste. The Pita Platter at Rodini Park

According to The New York Times, sticking to a Mediterranean diet can help a person avoid heart attacks and strokes. Rodini Park makes you want to eat Greek with their yummy, homemade pita platter. For your protein, choose falafel — a heady mix of garbanzo beans, celery, carrots, lentil and parsley. Add a flavorful sauce or two, like cool tzatziki or fresh hummus. Finally, augment with vegetable toppings like red cabbage, pepperoncini and Kalamata olives. Scoop it all up with soft, warm pita. If you still have an appetite, the bakery beckons with a plethora of goods baked daily. Coconut Galaktoboureko (honey custard cake), salted caramel butterscotch baklava, and a magical creation called a flourless chocolate bomb are just a few of the delectable options. 12181 Bluff Creek Dr., Ste. A | (310) 282-8500 | rodinipark.com

Rodini Park’s Falafel Bowl

Yellowfin Tuna Poke Bowl at Da Kikokiko

Poke bowls have got to be one of the most satisfying lunches around. Just filling enough to satiate, without being too heavy, the spicy yellowfin tuna bowl at Da Kikokiko melds flavor, crunch and just the right amount of kick. Scallions, shaved serrano peppers, smelt eggs, furikake ( Japanese seasoning), spicy mayo and tempura crumbs mix perfectly with

the fish and rice so that every bit works together harmoniously. Healthier options, such as a grain blend or kale and cucumber salad, can be substituted for the white rice; lime shoyu (vinaigrette) can be subbed for the mayonnaise. If you’re feeling frisky, order up a Dole Whip Float — they taste just like the ones at Disneyland! 12746 W. Jefferson Blvd. | (424) 835-4192 | dakikokiko.com

Paleo Pumpkin Pie Dip

Makes: 4 cups Ingredients 1, 15oz can pumpkin puree 1, 13oz can full-fat coconut cream 2 Tbsp arrowroot powder 2 tsp vanilla extract 1/3 cup maple syrup 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground ginger ½ tsp ground cloves ½ tsp ground nutmeg · ½ tsp salt sliced apples for dipping Instructions

A

dd all ingredients to a food processor or high-powered blender and process until smooth, about 1 minute. Taste and adjust flavor by adding more maple syrup or spices as desired. Transfer dip to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator overnight to thicken before serving with sliced apples. Notes

• Graham crackers are also a great option for dipping (not paleo, unfortunately!)

• The arrowroot acts as a thickener. If you are not strictly paleo, cornstarch is a great substitute.

• Dip stays fresh for 3-5 days in the refrigerator.

5 Expert Tips for

Traveling with Kids

Your getaway doesn’t have to be a headache — just follow these easy tips By Jill Carter

Jill Carter is a busy attorney but loves to travel the world with her husband Byron Melton, and their two daughters Elle and Campbell

I

t’s that time of year again. The kids are back in school and before we know it, the holidays will be upon us. The idea of going away with the family is always a good one; it’s the actual traveling that may induce emotional distress. Crowds plus kids plus holiday travel sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are five tips to make things run a little smoother this holiday season.

1

Start with a list Traveling with kids and overpacking are synonymous. There are a lot of things you’ll need to make your stay comfortable, but it’s also easy to overdo it. How many outfit changes does one little person need, after all? Make a list of necessities and do your best to stick to it.

2

Packing cubes are a must I use them to keep items separated and organized. They usually come in a pack with four to five cubes. I use one pack between both my daughters. A 42 Playa Vista Direct | October · November 2019

smaller cube works well for underclothes, pajamas and socks. A medium cube works great for the rest of their clothes. Shoe bags are also great for, you guessed it, shoes.

3

Allow plenty of time for everything We’ve all been in the midst of holiday chaos, especially at the airport. Throw in a couple kids and get ready for the meltdowns. Give yourself a break by getting to the airport early. You won’t beat the crowds, but the earlier you arrive the more time you give your family to sit down, relax and watch the people around you scramble. This extra time also gives kids a chance to move around the airport and get out some energy before the flight.

4

Whether it’s an educational game, or a favorite cartoon or movie, those tablets are packed with options to get us to our destination in peace. You should also pack books, coloring books, small toys, and the like. For younger children, this is a great time to surprise them with a new toy or book to go along with the favorites from home. Don’t forget chargers, portable battery packs and earphones!

5

Snacks are everything. You’ve got your healthy snacks like fruit, string cheese and popcorn. Then you move to your fun snacks, like Goldfish, pretzels, graham crackers and fruit snacks. From there you get into your generally forbidden snacks — you know what they are! Live a little and drop a few of those in your bag to dish out either for good behavior or as negotiating tools.

Embrace the art of a carefully curated carry-on bag for each kid Whether it’s a flight or a road trip, this bag is perhaps the most important aspect of your trip. At my house, we have pretty Jill Carter is a local resident and rigid rules in place for screen time.
