Making a Difference

L

ocal businesses are the backbone of thriving communities. They drive economic growth, create job opportunities, help build a sense of community identity and character, and make a difference in others’ lives through the services and resources they offer. For our “Local Leaders in Business” issue, we highlight entrepreneurs in Playa Vista who are making a positive impact in the community. Seda Bolulu was looking for a career transition that would combine her skills in talent acquisition and her passion for animals, which led to the creation of PackHire, the pet industry’s first employment search engine. The platform is free to job seekers looking for employment opportunities ranging from dog training and grooming to rescues and nonprofits, while employers can register and post jobs to find quality candidates with niche backgrounds for their pet businesses. Modern Animal is a veterinary clinic that is gearing up to introduce a new experience for pets and their owners through better designed spaces, technology, community and a membership that includes unlimited exams. Their goal is to build a better, more sustainable career for veterinary professionals and an improved human experience for clients. Vanessa Salgueiro’s pandemic project turned into a business inspired by her home country of Brazil. Her line of stylish and comfortable activewear, Vanessa SoCal, is consistently sold out and Salgueiro loves connecting with and helping other women in the community. We also highlight Playa Vista resident Toni Gold, who suffers from a rare neurological disorder called spasmodic dysphonia that impacts her vocal cords. To bring awareness and to raise funds for research, she has organized a walk on October 16 in Playa Vista to help others with her condition. Musician Ron Morrissey performs 100 free shows a year for isolated senior citizens across the Westside, including Playa Vista. He finds it to be an extremely enriching experience and presents an upbeat performance with songs by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and other artists that his audience will recognize. Whether it’s shopping local to support small business owners or paying it forward by offering assistance to others during the pandemic, we all have the ability to contribute to the community and make a difference in the lives of those around us. ‘LOUD AND CLEAR’ Suffering from a vocal disorder, Toni Gold is doing everything to help others STORY BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

T

oni Gold considers herself one of the lucky ones. The Playa Vista resident was quickly diagnosed with a neurological disorder called spasmodic dysphonia more than 50 years ago. It impacts the vocal cords and makes speech difficult to produce. The “orphan” disease impacts more than 50,000 people. “Back 50 years ago, there wasn’t much known about SD,” she says. “I saw a neurologist who was injecting Botox into the vocal cords to relieve the symptoms. Botox is the only way that one’s voice can be somewhat normal. Unfortunately, Botox doesn’t work for me.” To bring awareness and to raise funds for research, the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association is hosting the virtual Walk for Talk October 7 to October 11. Gold has organized her own walk on Saturday, October 16, in Playa Vista. To participate, email toni.gold2@ gmail.com or to donate, visit givesignup. org/tonigold. “I have lived with SD for more than 50 years, although the last 10 years have seen a more rapid decline in my voice quality,” she says. “For this reason, I decided to have my voice be heard loud and clear by participating in the NSDA’s Walk for Talk fundraising event.” Last year, the association’s walk raised more than $228,000 nationally. Gold’s fundraiser collected $5,000 with 25 attendees. In addition, Gold committed to contribute $20,000 annually for five years. “I’d rather do it when I’m alive, when the money can be used to research a cure because right now there is no cure,” Gold says. “We are aiming to raise money to research a cure, but we also want to raise awareness of the condition. For example, 10 PLAYA VISTA DIRECT | OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2021

PEOPLE people think that I’ve had a stroke, or they don’t ask. I use that experience to make it educational and tell people that I have a vocal condition that’s called spasmodic dysphonia. It affects no other part of my body.” There are two forms of National Spasmodic Dysphonia: adductor spasmodic dysphonia (AdSD) and abductor spasmodic dysphonia (AbSD), according to the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association. Spasmodic dysphonia can also be combined with other disorders, making it more difficult to diagnose and treat. Adductor SD, the most common form, affects approximately 80% to 90% of people with SD. In this type, spasms, usually in the thyroarytenoid muscle (TA), force the vocal folds together in adduction, or closing. AdSD can also affect the lateral cricoarytenoid muscle (LCA) or interarytenoid (IA). When looking at the larynx, an adductor SD case would show vocal folds that stay closed longer or close with more force. These spasms occur particularly on “voiced” speech sounds. AbSD, a less common form, occurs in approximately 10% to 20% of cases and results from spasms when the posterior cricoarytenoid muscles (PCA) abducts, or opens, the vocal folds. In AbSD, the spasms in the abductor muscles cause the vocal folds to remain open for a longer duration than should normally occur on these sound combinations. This results in the voice taking longer to complete the voiceless sounds, which makes the speaker sound “breathy.” AbSD causes problems with the production of “voiceless” speech sounds, which normally sound “airy” or “breathy” when produced. Gold has a combination of both, which is the most difficult to treat, she says. “Botox injections may, in the majority of the people, alleviate the symptoms, but the Botox only lasts about three months,” she says. “For people who do find Botox alleviates their symptoms, they have to go back every couple of months and get additional injections.” Gold sought help at age 23 when she could not say words like hospital. Gold, 75, has been her own medical advocate, visiting doctors in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Portland. Up until 10 years ago, her voice was somewhat OK.

Toni Gold has a form of spasmodic dysphonia that blends two forms.

With age, her voice has deteriorated. “I have two terrific careers, one as the CEO of an IPA (independent practice association), an organization that negotiated agreement with the HMOs,” she says. “The last 12 years of my career was as a financial adviser at Smith Barney. I retired in 2012.” “My voice wasn’t that bad and every position that I had I had to do a lot of public speaking, which I was able to do for a while.” Upon retirement, Gold became a support group leader in California for the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association. Prior to COVID-19, the members were meeting quarterly at a physician’s office in Beverly Hills. Now it meets quarterly, but through Zoom featuring well-known speakers. The next meeting is October 30. “What we miss via Zoom is the confidentiality of people sharing their stories,” she says.

Gold is more than happy to share her story in the hopes it will raise awareness. “Although speech is controlled by the brain, researchers are trying to identify the exact part of the brain that causes SD,” she says. “I’m also Jewish and there has been some research that leads one to believe that the genetic default might be carrying through a Jew’s lineage. It’s very, very common. I just hope others benefit from my story. “Living with a voice disorder is a daily challenge because verbal communication is the primary way I interact with people. I must constantly remind myself and others that SD is not who I am, but rather a personal characteristic that makes me unique. Just as my social world has been contracting (due to my inability to communicate), my virtual world is expanding. As the leader of the Los Angeles SD Support Group, I am able to interact with countless others who, like me, cannot be heard.” PLAYA PLAYAVISTA VISTADIRECT DIRECT || OCTOBER OCTOBER -- NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2021 2021 1111

MUSIC FOR THE MASSES Ron Morrissey leads a full life playing for seniors STORY BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

M

usician Ron Morrissey could not make a living out of performing, but playing for seniors has enriched his life. The Marina del Rey singer/guitarist performs 100 shows a year for isolated seniors in Santa Monica, West Los Angeles, Beverly Hills , Culver City, Playa Vista, Hermosa Beach, West Palm Beach Florida and Tuscany, Italy. The project started merely as a way to entertain his mother-in-law after he retired in 2014. “It had a wraparound porch, and I brought my guitar,” the 71-yearold says about her retirement home. “She suffers from Alzheimer’s, and I was playing for her. I looked up and there were 30 clients in the audience. They came in from everywhere, sitting around this wraparound porch. “They were so happy I was playing music. I looked at my wife ( Joan F. Morrissey) and said, ‘Look at this.’ That was about 11 years ago. I did it first during the summers off from teaching. Now I do it all year round.” He specializes in pop music — “sunshine pop” as it’s been called — from the 1940s to 1960s. Morrissey presents an upbeat show with songs that have sold 1 million copies or more by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, Fats Domino, and the Moody Blues. He wants to ensure everyone knows the tunes he’s playing. Morrissey has been a musician since he was about 6. Believing he could not pay the bills playing music, he pursued economics and banking careers. Toward the end of his career, he (Continued on page 16) 14 14 PLAYA PLAYA VISTA VISTA DIRECT DIRECT || OCTOBER OCTOBER -- NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2021 2021

In 2019, he played 100 shows. COVID-19 knocked it down to 20.

Chief Executive Officer Steven Eidelman says he founded the company after spending years in the industry. “A number of things stood out— critical problems,” says Eidelman, who founded the dog-tracking startup

They had completely wacky technology, hospitality and the overall experience was less than desired.” Modern Animal, he says, improves the experiences of the pet owner and veterinary professional through better designed clinics, technology and communication.

“The mission of the company is to really, truly create the best place for people to work,” Eidelman says. “We want our employees to have a more fulfilling career and to sustain their career and practice great medicine.” Eidelman calls Modern Animal a “One Medical” model for the veterinarians, who are full time and receive equity in the company.

Cricket pods is a dedicated exam room for urgent care. Exam rooms are named after the doctors’ pets.

For a $100 annual membership fee, Modern Animal offers unlimited exams, 24/7 virtual care, in-app prescription requests and delivery. There is a charge for additional services. Modern Animal has clinics in West Hollywood and Pasadena, with others to come in Studio City and Playa Vista. In July, Modern Animal announced $75.5 million in new funding over the past year — a $35.5 million Series A led by True Ventures and Addition and a $40 million Series B led by Founders Fund, which also led the company’s seed round in 2019. According to Rover.com, pet ownership skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic. About 49% of Americans added a pet to their family in the last year. This trend is especially true for millennials: a recent study shows that 76% of 20- to 38-year-olds have a pet. The demand has never been higher for veterinary care, Eidelman says. And the experience of working in a veterinary clinic has never been

worse. “Since we opened our doors just over a year ago, we have had the honor of taking care of thousands of pets from across Los Angeles at both our West Hollywood clinic and virtually,” Eidelman says.

Modern Animal’s Chief Executive Officer Steven Eidelman founded the dog-tracking startup Whistle.

“Our goal is to build a better, more sustainable career for veterinary professionals and a better, more human experience for pets and their owners by examining every nook and cranny of the industry and fixing any problem we can find.” The Modern Animal staff is focused on their clients. Eidelman says many clinics are buzzing with ringing phones, faxing medical records, chitchatty clients. At Modern Animal, cats and dogs are kept in separate areas. “The idea is to create a really safe and comfortable environment for the animal,” Eidelman says. “But the only way we can get them great care is if we also take care of humans.” Modern Animal Coming early 2022 12775 Millennium Drive, Suite 115, Playa Vista modernanimal.com PLAYA PLAYAVISTA VISTADIRECT DIRECT || OCTOBER OCTOBER -- NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2021 2021 19 19

LEADING THE PACK Playa Vista entrepreneur launches pet industry’s first employment search engine STORY BY SRIANTHI PERERA | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

S

Playa Vista resident Seda Bolulu is the founder of PackHire, an employment search engine and recruiting firm exclusive to the pet industry. 22 22 PLAYA PLAYA VISTA VISTA DIRECT DIRECT || OCTOBER OCTOBER -- NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2021 2021

eda Bolulu was looking for a career transition combining her skills in talent acquisition and passion for animals. What the Playa Vista resident found was a niche in the business world. Bolulu noted that it was difficult to search for jobs in this particular field. Thus, while still in business school at the University of Southern California, she created a job board for the pet industry. “Through extensive market research we discovered that the name job boards created for the masses were not sufficiently catering to the rapidly growing $100 billion pet industry, and we wanted to build the platform where employers and candidates can easily and cost-efficiently find their pack,” Bolulu says. PackHire, the new employment search engine and recruiting firm exclusive to the pet industry, serves the pet-loving community through its online platform. The service is free to job seekers who may search employment opportunities in areas such as veterinary care, grooming/boarding, dog training, rescues and nonprofits, pet food, retail, pet insurance and pet care start-ups. Employers pay to register and post jobs, search the candidate resume database, and work with industry expert recruiters to find quality candidates with niche backgrounds for their pet business. Bolulu has a decade of talent acquisition experience under her belt and her husband, Fadi Rasheed, is an employment attorney. “Creating an employment search engine between the two of us kind of made sense,” she notes. The couple hired technical expertise, such as web development, to fill the gaps in their knowledge. Funding was bootstrap. It is an opportune time for applica-

tions in the pet industry. Pet ownership is at an all-time high. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates 23 million households acquired a pet during the pandemic. The spike in ownership has sparked the growth of innovative pet products and services. Research also showed Bolulu that investors had poured more than $2 billion of venture funding into global pet-focused startups since 2017. According to the business information platform, Crunchbase, 2 million jobs are available in the industry across the country. To match those needs, Bolulu discovered there was no one-stopshop to search for employment. When Bolulu started searching for a talent acquisition manager position in the pet industry, the search results were “really bad,” she says. “They were inaccurate; a talent acquisition manager or marketing specialist search would get nursing home managers, event planners for a gentleman’s club — totally random things that were not in the pet industry or even loosely related,” Bolulu adds. She followed up with quantitative market research and asked business owners in the pet industry questions such as on how many job boards do they post their jobs, how many relevant resumes do they get for job postings and would they use a job board in the pet industry if it existed? Bolulu asked questions of her petloving family and friends. She also visited pet supply and grooming stores, vet clinics and similar places. Her main question was how are you finding jobs? Most job leads came via friend networks. “They said, ‘It’s very hard and it’s kind of all over the place,’” Bolulu says. “The results were really telling. Clearly there was a need in the market for businesses that wanted to hire people for their pet business, that had experience in the industry or that wanted to work in the pet industry.” Bolulu’s research, data collection and personal intuition led her to decide that a specialized job board was a necessity in the current climate. Since the soft launch of PackHire in February, Bolulu has received encouraging statistical results to back up her

decision. PackHire has more than 1,000 registered users, among them National Veterinary Associates and Banfield Pet Hospital, and many boutique clients in grooming, doggy day care and supplies stores. Bolulu has had more than 10,000 website visitors and a 10% clickthrough rate, which she deems “pretty high.” Pets have always been a part of Bolulu’s life. While growing up in suburban Orange County, her family raised many animals, among them dogs, cats, birds, a turtle and a bearded dragon, a type of lizard. Currently, her pets, Meeko the dog and Uma the cat, help maintain Bolulu’s love for animals and inspire her career. As for the future of PackHire, Bolulu wants to raise funding with seed or angel funds for its next level of devel-

opment. After starting as a job board, PackHire incorporated a recruiting services search. With those first two steps complete, the third is to be a digital community where pet professionals may connect with each other. To that end, Bolulu plans to participate in community events including one upcoming: she will be featured at The Pet Summit, a virtual educational seminar from October 23 to October 24 as a panelist in the “Meet the Founders: The Ins and Outs of Business In The Pet Space” to discuss hiring trends, challenges and career outlook. Visitation School is a co-ed, Catholic Elementary School for students in Junior Kindergarten through 8th grade. We have been achieving academic excellence within a supportive community since 1947. Nothing illustrates this more than the past year and a half. While the pandemic forced schools across the country into distance learning, Visitation continued its commitment toward excellence. Now that we’re back in the classroom, we’re all hearing about the pandemic’s toll on education. Nationally, test scores show progress slowed during this disrupted year. However, bucking the national trend, Visitation’s students are continuing to test either on or above grade level. With an emphasis on educating the whole child, we even managed to continue offering our physical education, music, arts, and foreign language programs throughout the entirety of distance learning. A global pandemic was not going to hold us back. Visitation continues to thrive. Today, enrollment is consistent, with 244 total students. Our student to teacher ratio is 14 to 1. Our many clubs, organizations, and sports programs are up and running. 100% of our graduates are accepted to their first-choice high school. Graduates leave here as confident critical thinkers, proficient in time management and equipped with work habits that help them succeed in high school and beyond. Give your child the gift of a Catholic education. Learn more about what Visitation has to offer your family and schedule a tour today.

WISH Community School- TK-8 The award-winning WISH Community School is excited for another great school year in Westchester. From the very first day students arrive to each and every day thereafter, we focus on providing a rich, whole scholar approach to learning, meaningful and engaging academic achievement, social justice through inclusivity, and social-emotional well-being. WISH students, faculty, and staff are excited to be back on campus, enjoying the experience of creating educational excellence in person, both indoors and outdoors. It has been wonderful to see the giant lego houses, catapults, and inventions as students begin to engage in the design thinking process. Students have been filling each other’s buckets with kindness and building friendships throughout these first few weeks, while also growing their social-emotional skills through classroom community lessons. All students at WISH benefit from Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) instructional strategies used in all classes. Students also are highly engaged in STEM activities through the Launch and Gateway programs of Project Lead the Way (PLTW)! Along with core curriculum subjects, all students participate in art, music, movement, gardening, and library. In addition, every student experiences integrated technology which includes digital citizenship, coding, and game design. WISH students continue to love our clubs and sports teams. We offer a variety of clubs for our students to get connected through a variety of leadership opportunities such as Student Council, Student Leadership, Robotics, Where Everybody Belongs (WEB), Student Ambassadors, Humans United, and Kindness Club. WISH also serves as a Professional Development School for LMU’s school of education and educators from around the world. Over the past few years, WISH has hosted visitors from California, 26 US states, and 12 countries. Leaders in education come to WISH to learn about best practices in education and we are thrilled to learn strategies and practices from them too!

WISH Academy High School To expand your child’s compassion and ambition

We are incredibly proud of our first class of graduates from WISH Academy High School and this fall, one of the highlights has been seeing pictures and hearing updates of their first days from colleges across the United States and abroad. This year the faculty and staff were thrilled to welcome students back onto campus to engage in exciting academic programs, CIF sports teams, leadership opportunities, and really awesome clubs created through student and faculty partnerships! WISH Academy continues its mission to maximize every scholar’s learning potential within an atmosphere of caring and belonging that’s grounded in collaboration, a meaningful and engaging curriculum, and a commitment to excellence for all of the young people we serve. WISH Academy has four unique pathways for students to further develop a ” foundation in the areas they love. Students can step into the role of a medical investigator, surgeon, and biomedical engineer through our exciting and challenging Project Lead the Way Biomedical. Alternatively, students can participate in the amazing experience of performing in live theater, dance, and musical productions with the Visual and Performing Arts pathway, or if they have strong feelings about justice, current affairs, political science, and the world, they can choose to dive into the Liberal Arts and Civic pathway. “We are passionate about excellence in education and the WISH Academy faculty is impressive,” declares Ms. Mowll, WISH Academy High School principal. “From the diverse and challenging courses and programs we offer, to the small class sizes, to the personalized attention and support each student receives, we ensure each child’s achievement is maximized. While students are also excited about the pathway courses, everyone is talking about the upcoming Homecoming dance and our undefeated Varsity Volleyball team.” Parents and families recognize the importance of selecting a quality high school where their child can meet their goals and step into the colleges and universities of their choice. WISH schools pride themselves on our family partnerships and open communication. We work together to ensure quality, access, commitment, encouragement, engagement, and much more so our students thrive individually and collectively.

Located in the heart of Santa Monica, PS1 Pluralistic School is a coeducational day school for children in grades K-6. At PS1, pluralism is our highest aspiration—for our children and our world. It also describes our methods for achieving that goal. The school’s name intentionally echoes our nation’s motto, E pluribus unum: Out of many, one. As our students master essential skills and knowledge, we ensure they understand themselves as individual learners and human beings, and as members of numerous larger communities. Why does pluralism matter? By attending to each child as a unique and valued individual, we build a kind, cooperative, dynamic learning community that models the larger world as we think it can and should be: one that considers, honors, and welcomes every person, so all can joyfully contribute their best selves to the greater good. When your child spends their earliest years in this carefully designed educational environment, they step forth prepared and energized to put their values into practice wherever they go. Today, we need such delightful, dedicated, effective thinkers and citizens more than ever. www.psone.org ADVERTORIAL

SINLESS SHORTBREAD

Vegan coconut orange shortbread is aromatic RECIPE BY EMILY CHAVEZ | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

his sweet crumbly shortbread is even sweeter for some knowing that no animal products are used. Coconut oil serves as a delicious substitute for the butter in a traditional shortbread cookie to create the high-fat content needed for the iconic crumble. Another benefit of coconut oil is it may be safely stored at room temperature, so it does not have to be warmed like butter. The coconut flavor is subtle, and the orange zest creates a refreshing aromatic experience as you nibble on a cookie on its own or along with a cup of Lady Grey tea.

Vegan Coconut Orange Shortbread Active time: 10 minutes Total time: One hour Yields: About 16 cookies Ingredients 1/2 cup coconut oil, room temperature but still solid 1/4 cup granulated sugar 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoons salt 2 tablespoons water 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour Zest of one orange Instructions With an electric mixer on medium-high, mix coconut oil until completely smooth. Add sugar, vanilla extract, salt, water and orange zest and mix for another 2 to 3 minutes. Gently stir in the flour with a large spoon until combined and the dough holds together. If the dough is dry and crumbly, add more water. If the dough is soggy, add more flour. Wrap the dough in a floured piece of wax paper and shape into a log about 2 inches in circumference. Chill wrapped dough log in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Once the dough is ready, remove the wax paper and cut 1/2-inch pieces and place on the lined baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch space between. Bake in the preheated oven for 18 to 20 or until the edges are slightly brown. Transfer them to a cooling rack and cool completely before serving. 32 PLAYA PLAYA VISTA VISTA DIRECT DIRECT || AUGUST OCTOBER- SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER 2021 2021 32

DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS Deutsch LA’s new PSA takes empathetic approach on COVID-19 vaccine STORY BY KAMALA KIRK | IMAGES COURTESY OF DEUTSCH LA

espite available COVID-19 vaccines, many people – especially those between the ages of 18 and 24 – are hesitant to have them for various reasons, including fear of potential reactions and side effects and personal beliefs. To help young people make an informed decision based in facts, Playa Vista-based creative agency Deutsch LA recently launched a PSA for nonprofit organization The Ad Council and COVID Collaborative’s groundbreaking COVID-19 Vaccine Education Initiative. “This subject is so polarizing and it seems like we aren’t able to actually listen or hear one another,” says Eric Kaufman, senior vice president, creative director of Steelhead, Deutsch LA’s full-service production company. “We didn’t want to create something that was just more fuel for argument culture. This film was born from the idea of: what if the vaccine conversation started from a place of love and empathy?” “It’s Up To You” is a provocative and empathetic documentary short film that shows pairs of people, ranging from siblings and couples to friends, participating in real conversations about vaccine hesitancy and the importance of making an informed decision. “From the beginning, we knew this film couldn’t be a scripted after-school special that was just telling people to go do something,” Kaufman says. “Not only does that approach create a confrontational tone but our young audience is so incredibly savvy that they would have dismissed it. This had to be real people having real conversations. We want our audience to relate to these stories and see a part of themselves in our people. vaccine, Deutsch LA brought together people who know and deeply care about each other – one pro-vaccine and one vaccine-hesitant – and captured their interaction as they discussed their different viewpoints. The idea was to start the conversation from a place of love and mutual respect in a relatable way that allows the audience to see themselves in the people, relationships and stories. “Working with such an important topic, we knew the aesthetic of the film couldn’t be the same thing you see in every commercial,” Kaufman adds. “We wanted to create a more thoughtful, elevated visual platform to feature these stories. So many small details went into the colors of the set, the mood of the lighting, the camera angles, down to the chairs they sat in – all focused on creating a welcoming, intimate space to capture these very personal, authentic moments.” Each conversation is different and

reframes difficult conversations from a shame-free place of love and empathy. The film’s closing message, “Let’s make an informed decision. Together,” underscores the notion of people coming together to hear each other out with mutual respect. “This is a difficult conversation that people are struggling to have in a meaningful way and we hope our film shows that you’re not alone in that,” Kaufman says. “If our film can help spark that conversation between loved ones and ultimately give people a starting point to make an informed decision, we feel like it’s done its job.” The Ad Council adcouncil.org Deutsch LA deutschla.com PSA Link: https://bit.ly/COVIDPSAPVD PLAYA PLAYAVISTA VISTADIRECT DIRECT || OCTOBER OCTOBER -- NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2021 2021 33 33

anessa Salgueiro owns a marketing agency that focuses on the gaming industry. The pandemic took a toll on her business, her clients and her psyche. She became anxious and stressed, but the Playa Vista resident relaxed when she went out of her comfort zone to try something different in July 2020. “My home country of Brazil is one of the biggest players in terms of fabrics,” she says. “I started something new; something that would keep my mind at ease and connect me with other women.” Salgueiro searched for suppliers and, a few days later, she received the first box of 40 to 50 bikini sets. She panicked. “I thought, ‘Oh my God. How am I going to sell all of this?’” she says. “I’m super shy about approaching people. My first sale was to my daughter. She was talking to girls who were sunbathing. She actually made my first sale. “After that, I started being more confident and talking to people. In the first few days, I sold almost everything and placed my second order. It was already late summer, mid-July. I immediately started sourcing other items and I came up with the idea of activewear.” And Vanessa SoCal was born. “I know there are thousands of brands out there, but when it comes to really high-tech, high-end fabrics, the list surely narrows down and the price is not attractive to everyone,” she says. “Everything I sell was thoughtfully sourced. No mass production. I believe in buying fewer items that are stylish, comfortable and durable. They can be worn for working out, lounging at home or even going out.” For customers interested in buying clothing, Salgueiro offers “try-on”

bags for free to Playa Vista residents and those who live within a 3-mile radius. The service is common in Brazil. “Let’s say you are interested in buying items, but you’re not sure about your size, the fit, etc.,” she says. “I will ask you a few questions like size, preferences, if there is something you absolutely dislike. Based on that, I will select a few items and send for the customers to try. “Since I started, there was not one local customer who would buy one item only. The convenience, the fabrics, the variety, the fit — and the impulse — always made them get at least three or four items at once.” In February, she launched her online store and, she says, since then, her business has grown exponentially. Salgueiro, who moved to Playa Vista from Brazil in 2016, thought Vanessa SoCal would be a short-term project during the pandemic. She’s starting to think otherwise. “I fell in love with this world,” she says. “I’m thinking about new collections to bring. In August, I did our first outdoor photo shoot. I hired models in Malibu. “We’ve had a lot of pop-ups and this helps a lot. I go to gyms and that’s pretty much it. As a small business, I have little to no budget. I had to learn how to do the website. I did everything on my own.” Vanessa SoCal is a passion project. She’s still hands on, tagging, counting and sorting clothing, while preparing for pop-up events. All of this takes hours, but she does not mind. “I go above and beyond to delight my customers,” she says. Vanessa SoCal vanessasocal.com Instagram: @vanessa.socal

GEORGE MICHAEL

CARL

LADY MARMALADE

Hi, my name is George Michael. I’m a nice pup who can be a bit nervous in new situations. I’m hoping to find a kind pet parent who will give me lots of love and back rubs too. I’d prefer a space without younger kids, but I do get along well with other dogs. Let’s meet up soon!

Hello, I’m Carl. I’m an older gentleman who likes to relax with my people. I’m searching for a home where I can get lots of nice pets and be your best pal. Come meet me soon!

Hello there, my name is Lady Marmalade! I’m an energetic gal who loves lots of play time. If you’re searching for a cat who loves to try new puzzles or other enriching activities, choose me!

Trainer Tip – Holiday Preparation Katie McGuire, CPDT-KA Annenberg PetSpace

The holidays are just around the corner, so start preparing your pup for a successful season. If you’re anticipating visitors or trick-ortreaters, try putting your dog on leash and giving them a treat right as people arrive, before any barking occurs. You could also set a bowl of treats outside your

door so guests can enter and drop several on the floor to reward your dog, creating positive associations and preventing unwanted jumping. By practicing good behaviors, your dog will be better equipped for success when it’s time to celebrate with family and friends.
