oing through our late friend’s mountains of material items inspired us to begin a preemptive unburdening of our own. We drafted our dear friend, Matina, to help us move our own mountains. “What’s this?” my husband asks. “They are Oaxacan topless mermaid Last Supper figurines, obviously,” I say, suppressing a tiny eye roll. “Notice that Jesus is serving watermelon and agua fresca for communion. He’s a topless mermaid, too, except he has a crown.” Duh. I peruse the house with the eyes of a minimalist. Ouch. There’s so much stuff that it hurts. I have the interior decorating touch of Martha Stewart on peyote. I am a bonafide collector. I have Mexican folk art throughout the joint and feminist memorabilia from floor to ceiling. I have books that threaten to eat us alive. And clothing! I have my mother’s confirmation dress from 1928, her mother-of-the-bride dress from 1959, and her Grange square-dancing dresses with rick-rack decoration. I still have the sweaters she knitted for me and others. I can’t let go of the things she made. I derive joy from holding something that spent so much time on her lap as I contemplate the hours and hours it took for her to create them. Often, couples have one of each: a neat freak and a not-so-neat freak. Ken and I are both collectors and not-so-neat freaks. We also married in our mid-to-late 50s, by which time we had both established what we collect. I moved Ken into my house, as he couldn’t confront the task of packing and unpacking his home. The experience was like fitting the ugly stepsisters’ size 11 feet into size 5 slippers. It hurt! But I managed to do it and won my prince… and all his stuff. After our friends’ passing and the arrival of 2022 — or, as one of All Saints Rector Mike Kinman’s kids called it, “2020: Season 3” — I declared an “un-stuffing” project. I am confronting every microbe of resistance I have to letting go of “stuff.” Mental mind traps like… • Guilt from wasted money. • If I don’t save this, it’ll be lost to posterity. • Sentimental feelings and memories I attach to objects. • As soon as I let go of it, I will need it (absolutely true!). These thoughts have their roots in my Depression-era mother. She kept even the smallest of items, like margarine tubs for leftovers, prescription vials and rubber bands. She always bought three of everything so that we — her three daughters — wouldn’t be jealous. My dad? His philosophy was, “Throw it out; we can always buy another one.” I have none of my dad in me when it comes to possessions, and a lot of my mom, except for the cleaning and organizing that she excelled at. I have a phobia regarding housekeeping, because my mother spent her life perfecting the squeaky-clean home. I swore I would never spend my life cleaning, or even a minuscule portion of it. I became a topic of gossip with my sisters and mom, and maybe even my grandmother, when I hired a housekeeper in my mid-20s. They thought, “Who does she think she is — better than the women who cleaned their own homes?!” No! I was contributing to the economy, darn it. Part of the armchair psychology behind my comfy-womfy attachment to clutter was my discovery at 8 that I could maintain privacy with it. My mother was an inveterate snoop. However, I discovered that her hatred of clutter was so enmeshed and powerful that she would avoid my chaotic room. Snooping foiled! I was also raised to be an executive’s wife. However, my generation was on the cusp of women being hungry to be both the executive and a wife. As a result, I have one foot firmly planted in getting a Ph.D. in gracious homemaking, the other in doing everything that I saw boys and

men being groomed for. The result is that I am very proud of my ability to set a gorgeous table, cook a gourmet meal, and flower arrange. Which circles back to more stuff! My kitchen and dining room paraphernalia includes a plethora of dishware and silverware; I have a fashion and style for almost any occasion. I have linens and crystal. I have fine Bavarian china with 24-carat gold trim from the late 19th century. I have a complete set of Homer Laughlin Mexicana-themed stenciled dinnerware; cowboy pottery dinnerware; place settings for 24 of cranberry glass; 16 place settings for a Bastile Day fete. I have my mom’s sterling, her silverplate, Ken’s aunt’s sterling, cowboy-themed flatware… you get the drift. The problem is the stuff in our home has literally drifted into our daily enjoyment of life. Both Ken and I are putting on our big kids’ underpants and coaching ourselves into letting go… letting go… letting go… and we haven’t even dared to go into the garage or basement yet. So, if you haven’t heard from me in a week, please send someone — we are buried in here somewhere! EMAIL MATTERS

HOW DO I SWITCH OVER TO USING A NEW EMAIL ACCOUNT WITHOUT LOSING ALL THE INFORMATION IN MY OLD ACCOUNT? Maybe you took the saying, “New year, new me” to heart or you’re just tired of the 35,000 unread emails in your 20-year old email account. Regardless of why, you’re making the switch to a new email account (and address) and want to make the process as painless as possible. To help you out, here are some tips from the Edison team: 1. Make sure you have some overlap Unless you’re ok with losing everything from your old account, it’s ill-advised to torpedo it immediately. Keeping it around, even for a few additional days, will give you the chance to ensure you’ve ported over everything you need to your new account. Set a deadline to close your old account when you’re sure you don’t need it anymore. 2. Auto-forward important senders For the people and messages you want to take with you, you can set up auto-forwarding in the Settings section of your old account. Simply establish the parameters of the messages you’d like forwarded (i.e. sender name) and insert the name of your new account. From that point forward, all messages that meet those parameters will be automatically forwarded to your new account. Unfortunately this process does mean that you will likely need to keep your old account active for a while longer, so only do this step if you’re okay with that. 3. Announce your new address For those important enough to get the news directly from you such as friends and family, BCC them all and let them know where they can now reach you. If you’re worried that you may have missed someone in the send, simply set up an out of office message (with no end date) with the news that you can now be reached at your new email address. 4. Change your login information You’ve likely used your old email address to create accounts on a medley of apps and websites. Unfortunately there isn’t a quick way to change all of your login information in one fell swoop, and you’ll have to simply go into your various accounts and change the email address associated with your identity. A quick tip is that you can likely find these accounts by searching for key phrases such as, “confirm your email” or “your new account”. Hopefully by following these steps, you’ll be able to migrate to your new account with no sweat. Have your own email questions? Send any you may have to marketing@edison.tech and they could be answered in our next column!

A

By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Editor

ward-winning author Marc Brown is perky first thing in the morning. “Hi! This is Marc Brown, and I’m ready to talk,” he said into the phone. His demeanor reflects that of his well-known character, Arthur, who is celebrating its 45th anniversary. Brown will appear via Crowdcast at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, through Vroman’s. The “Vroman’s Live Presents Marc Brown, in conversation with Todd Parr, discusses ‘Believe in Yourself: What We Learned from Arthur’” is geared toward adults. His latest book, “Believe in Yourself,” is a “treasure trove of quotes and life lessons” that is divided into five sections that will inspire readers of all ages to listen to their hearts, work together, have an original point of view, and believe in themselves. Available on Little, Brown Books for Your Readers, it features more than 60 pieces of new artwork. Brown created Arthur after losing his job. His son asked him to read a nighttime story, so he created the aardvark. “I was teaching at this small college in Boston in the late 1970s, and it closed,” Brown said. “I went home and my very young son asked for a bedtime story. I said, ‘You’re going to need to help me with this. I’m feeling kind of down. I just lost my job.’ He said, ‘Oh, dad. Maybe it’ll make you feel better.’”

Through his “Arthur” books, author Marc Brown has visited the White House and the Kremlin.

Music Heals Minds officially launches in Pasadena

Nandani Sinha founded Music Heals Minds to use musical performance to help people suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia and traumatic brain injury.

asadena nonprofit Music Heals Minds has used music to help people experiencing Alzheimer’s, dementia and traumatic brain injury since 2019. It marked its official launch on Jan. 15. Following a successful career as an internationally acclaimed opera singer, Music Heals Minds founder Nandani Sinha began working with patients suffering from memory loss and disorientation after witnessing her own father’s battle with vascular dementia firsthand. Sinha’s experience inspired her to use her musical talent to help others living with similar illnesses, and she began volunteering at Alzheimer’s Los Angeles as well as several other memory care units across the county. “In these programs, I strive to constantly connect through eye contact, mirroring and movement-based exercises,” Sinha said. “It’s not really about the most perfect way I can sing, but it’s about making that perfect connection with someone, that they are hooked in with me and not in the past or the future worrying about what’s happening to them. This kind of therapeutic activity brings people into the present.” After her father’s diagnosis, he struggled to express his thoughts or recall memories. When he listened to music, however, he began to recognize his daughter and unearth memories thought to have been lost. CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

“The cognitive skills recess to early childhood, when you need someone watching you all the time because your brain is not making connections with your environment or with the people in your sphere,” Sinha explained. “When people are out of time or out of place because of Alzheimer’s, dementia or any other kind of brain injury, they have a hard time reregulating their body. But when we sing, we are breathing in time together and our heartbeats sync up, our respiration rates sync up, and our brainwaves sync up, too. It’s almost as if we become one organism, and that co-regulation helps people manage their stress and anxiety. “We found with my dad that he could recognize me when music came on. When I would sing to him, he would remember that I was an opera singer and he would remember things that we had thought were gone. He remembered my high school concerts.” Music Heals Minds has served seven senior living facilities in person and more than 1,500 people and their caregivers over Zoom in the past year. Their artists are all professionals who have performed on some of the biggest stages in the world and have been trained by the nonprofit’s staff music therapist in the importance of making eye contact and initiating physical contact through dancing, holding hands and clapping together, all techniques that help reconnect an individual to their surroundings and loved ones. “We would do 45 minutes’ worth of singing, and in those 45 minutes you start seeing the light go on in people’s eyes, smiles come to their faces, or their bodies relaxing,” Sinha said. “All of a sudden, they’re taking full breaths that go down into their bellies rather than their chest heaving because they’re in some sort of discomfort or they’re anxious. They would clap and sing along.” During her performances, Sinha also takes song requests from her audience. She has found that songs from an individual’s past, particularly between the ages of 5 and 15, when the body develops hormonally and the brain experiences an unprecedented flood of strong emotions, can help trigger old memories. “Music of that time is really stuck in our head, because that’s when we start really experiencing love, hate and profound joy,” Sinha said. “So, if I can find out how old someone is and pinpoint that age bracket between 5 and 15, and then also know what their native language is or what they were speaking at that time, then I can find songs that will help access their memories.” Music Heals Minds’ team of artists represents a broad spectrum of languages and backgrounds from around the world, making it easier to work through cultural and linguistic boundaries. For instance, Sinha once sang for a man from Korea who had suffered a traumatic brain injury and had been acting upset, despondent, and ready to give up on speech therapy. Sinha sang a Korean folk song called “Arirang,” an unofficial anthem of Korea that served as a symbol of unity between the North and the South during the Korean War. After hearing Sinha’s performance, the man cried. “I was told by his therapist afterward that he could not stop trying to talk about how important that song was,” Sinha said. “Being able to talk about that song, to try to get the brain to find new connections between the neurons and the synapses, was so important. From there we keep building and using music as an entry way.” This year, Sinha is piloting a new program with her intern, Oscar Yum of Flintridge Preparatory School, to connect music students with local nursing homes. Sinha ran a similar program in the past from her private studio, which saw students send videos of their performances to their “adopted grandparent” at the nursing home, who then sent back their feedback and notes of encouragement in return. “It gave the grandparents something to look forward to and showed them that they weren’t forgotten and left alone during this time when they were in isolation,” Sinha said. Now that Music Heals Minds has officially launched in Pasadena, Sinha is looking to foster new connections within the community and continue to help reconnect people suffering from brain-related traumas with their loved ones and themselves.

The number eight is one of the luckiest numbers in Chinese culture and is often associated with wealth and prosperity. “These past two years during the pandemic have been very difficult with anti-Asian hate, and donations represent awareness,” APCF Executive Director Chen-Yun Chen said. “This will be a calling for everybody to join the Asian Pacific Community Fund and to invest in Asian Pacific Islander nonprofits. That’s what APCF does. We support and sustain the nonprofits serving the AAPI underserved population.” In previous years, shoppers have raised over $10,000 for the APCF through the event, and this year, Westfield Santa Anita will match all donations up to $5,000. Arcadia Mayor Sho Tay joined Westfield representatives and community members on Jan. 20 to give the first donation. “I am proud of the resilience this community has shown during these uncertain times,” Tay said. “I wish everyone a happy and heathy Year of the Tiger.” For more information and to register for the event, visit westfield.com/santaanita.

Interdisciplinary artist and Marina del Rey resident Marischa Slusarski at her El Segundo studio.

Artist Marischa Slusarski forged an extraordinary path to achieve her dream By Bridgette M. Redman Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

W

hen one is called to be an artist, it doesn’t matter what hurdles have to be jumped over or what prejudices have to be overcome. An artist finds the way to create what they are meant to create and become the artist they are meant to be. Marina del Rey resident Marischa Slusarski knew from the time she was a young child that she wanted to be an artist. It didn’t matter that she came from a family of second-generation immigrants and was raised by strict, religious parents in a small suburb of Denver with no access to museums or other forms of art. “I was really voraciously curious

about art, drawing and painting at an early age, but I didn’t have a foundation to support or nurture that curiosity,” Slusarski said. “My parents didn’t understand, and we had no access to contemporary art or fine art galleries or museums. They wanted me to paint pictures of the Rocky Mountains and landscapes.” Instead, Slusarski drew half-human, half-rabbit creatures; biomorphic figures; and things that made her parents think she was insane. When she went off to a small state college, she wasn’t allowed to be an art major, because she had to get a job. However, in between her journalism classes, she haunted the arts depart-

ment, creating as often as she could. Some evenings she’d spend in printmaking shops. “I had to chart my own course,” Slusarski said. “I was my own north star.” Once she left college, Slusarski got a series of what she called “gold-bricking jobs” to support her painting. She would take jobs with no supervision, where no one knew what she was doing. “I would paint all night and then go to my office and fall asleep on the floor,” Slusarski said. “I was sticking it to the man for the right to be an artist. I was so determined to be a full-time artist.” Along the way she would do things

Commissions launched next artistic phase Soon, things started taking off for Slusarski’s art career. She caught the attention of people in the movie industry, who bought her art. She was picked up by a gallery and a friend started acting as her European art consultant. “I was doing the hybrid work,” Slusarski said. “They were representational animal portraits that were half-human and half-animal. They were amalgamations, deformed and conjoined.” She was able to quit her gold-bricking jobs as commissions started to roll in. “There were a lot of TV actors and famous people who wanted me to paint their special family dynamic as animals,” Slusarski said. “A kid would want to be a parrot or a mountain lion. One TV actor wanted me to paint him as a half-tiger. I painted him as a tigerfish — that was really weird.” Sometimes her clients got oddly specific. One woman commissioned Slusarski to paint her husband as a Chippendale beefcake with a wolf head, sitting in front of a lake while reading a book and catching a fly at the same time. “Those commissions were really hard,” Slusarski said. Life as a full-time artist came with adventures as well. Slusarski traveled the world looking for places to create. She described how she once got on a plane to Bangkok with no money. She had a friend there who had a great gallery, and he was dubbed by

like work as a body painter in a Hollywood nightclub. She’d paint the women who danced on the lit cubes as well as the nightclub customers. She’d make turkey dogs out of a rice cooker and steamer and sell them for $5 a piece to supplement her tips. Her first real show was at the food court in the Santa Monica mall. “That was really weird,” Slusarski said. “My painting could be construed as somewhat disturbing. You’d be sitting there with your entire family, eating a hot dog on a stick and looking at these weird paintings.” A person who was influential in the art world — and who later became a major champion of her work — approached Slusarski, and the first thing she asked was whether she’d been abused as a child.

a Bangkok magazine as artist of the year. She moved into his place and kept painting. Once back home, Slusarski was able to break into the Venice arts scene by renting a studio in the Franklin building. In lieu of rent, she gave them one painting a year. She did that for nine years, and it became her springboard into the Venice art scene. In those days, there were very few women or BIPOC artists in the scene — and those who were often found themselves in danger from men who wanted to assault them. Slusarski bonded with the other women. “We ruled Abbot Kinney — we just ruled it,” Slusarski said. “Abbot Kinney is great now, but in the olden days it was the wild, Wild West. We were making headway while also navigating the art world. All of Venice had this edgy feeling. It was this incredible community atmosphere. We didn’t feel less than the male artist. It was really a very fertile time to be an artist.” Painter skipped across the planet Slusarski’s international adventures weren’t over yet. She moved to East London with a photographer she had met in Bangkok. They set up on Brick Lane, transforming one of her apartment bedrooms into a studio. They started creating large-scale photographs that became dioramas with filters, scrims, scaffolding and populated

with taxidermy and sculpted troglodyte figures. “We had them living in forests with sci-fi vegetables we’d get at the Bangladeshi market,” Slusarski said. “Anything we could find, we’d put in the photograph.” It was a challenging city to be an artist, Slusarski said, both as an American and someone without a master’s degree in art. Eventually she was able to open a gallery in the basement of a hair salon. That lasted until she got kicked out of the country because she went in and out of London too much and never had a green card. In late 2015, Slusarski and her husband traveled to Bhutan for a month. This time, both had work permits and she worked with the artist community there, giving them lectures. “It was one of the most extraordinary experiences in my life,” Slusarski said. “It had been closed off to the public for a long time. Himalayan Buddhists live there who actually believe in flying tigers and mythical beasts.” She continued traveling and continued making art. She had shows in Asia, Europe and cities around the United States. “I just kept challenging the traditional boundaries of being an artist,” Slusarski said. Her resume is sprinkled with eclectic jobs she did throughout her journey — from designing children’s toys

and being a production designer for a horror movie in an abandoned Ohio amusement park to doing volunteer work teaching art to teenagers with mental health issues. Adapting during the pandemic Slusarski met her husband, Ricardo Angelo Mestres III, while selling art in Hollywood as he was the head of a major studio. However, when his daughter died of a brain tumor when he was 48, he quit and went back to medical school to become an emergency room doctor. Now in his 60s, he didn’t sign up for a pandemic, Slusarski said. They were both afraid that he would die or that he would bring it home and she would die. She became very despondent and would lay around watching Netflix all day, eating the same flavor can of soup. Slusarski realized she had to get a job. She was invited to teach a visual arts lab via Zoom and began hanging out with women who were doing textiles and abstract work using digital tools. It led her to asking herself what was stopping her from making abstract work, something that had long been a dream of hers. “I don’t want to keep repeating myself,” Slusarski said. “I don’t want to replicate myself. I don’t want to build my brand. I don’t want to be famous. I want to be well regarded. Why not during the pandemic, as I’m teaching

this class and getting ideas, do what I’ve always wanted to do? Do what I was curious about doing?” She began experimenting with different tools, creating forms that looked like centipedes scampering under the deep sea. She’d put them on freezer paper and then collage them onto canvases. She pulled out some abstract paintings from storage that she had created and started using digital and analog methods to create layered paintings. One of her works had 37 layers. “I wanted to do everything,” Slusarski said. “Spray paint, air compressor — there was no judgment or ego involved. I had a lot of time and a single-occupancy studio, so I didn’t have to worry about COVID-19. I just got to play with paint on a lot of canvases. I went crazy making these paintings.” She said everyone needs to figure out what they really want to do in this time and recognize that many people are having a really hard time. “A lot of artists did really depressing political work, and I wanted to do riotous, super colorful, super iridescent, almost holographic work,” Slusarski said. “They have sparkling layers that draw you in. If you look at my painting, there are these lofty layers of work that kind of go back and forth in layering. That was what I wanted to do. I wanted to make myself happy or I would just lay down again and eat split pea soup and watch Netflix.” Future is hazy — but it will include art Slusarski’s studio is located in El Segundo, and she continues to be influenced by what she calls “the zany village that was Venice.” While she can’t predict what her future art is going to look like, she does plan to dally for a while in the abstract work. “I haven’t saturated the process,” Slusarski said. “I haven’t become tired of it. I haven’t started to make commissions of abstract wolves sitting in chairs catching flies. I’m able to do what I want to do, and if I’m able to do that, I’ll continue to make these paintings. I know that for now, I’m really psyched and am having a blast.” It’s a message she passes on to the younger artists whom she’s mentored and lectured. “I think at the end of the day, I wouldn’t have done anything different,” Slusarski said. “We all become the artist we’re supposed to be. I don’t know if I would want to live if I couldn’t make art.”

Mike Lew’s ‘Richard III’ will stream digitally By Bliss Bowen Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

ransposing Shakespeare’s plotlines and themes into contemporary settings is not a new trick; think of “West Side Story” (a musical twist on “Romeo and Juliet”), the BBC’s “ShakespeaRe-Told” series, or “10 Things I Hate About You” (a high school version of “The Taming of the Shrew”). “Teenage Dick” by playwright Mike Lew (mikelew.com) is set in Roseland High School — with Shakespeare’s “Richard III” reimagined as a bullied whiz kid hellbent on getting elected president of the student body in his senior year despite being physically disabled by cerebral palsy. Richard Gloucester is portrayed by actor Gregg Mozgala, who also has cerebral palsy and who Lew credits with suggesting both the concept and the cheeky title of “Teenage Dick.” Speaking while on a break from rehearsals at La Jolla Playhouse for the world premiere of “Bhangin’ It,” a musical he co-wrote with his wife, Rehana Lew Merza, Lew described “Teenage Dick” as “the fruition of multiple long-term collaborations” between him, Mozgala and director Moritz von Stuelpnagel. “There’s something about this production specifically that the three of us having a long-term conversation has yielded,” the San Diego native said. “Gregg’s politics around disabled representation and access in the theater dovetailed with my advocacy on behalf of Asian American artists and some of the stumbling blocks that we’ve shared.” Corruption and perception are core themes of Shakespeare’s play and in “Teen-

Playwright Mike Lew’s “Teenage Dick,” a provocative reimagining of Shakespeare’s “Richard III” that was originally scheduled to open on the Pasadena Playhouse stage, will instead be streaming digitally, a move prompted by the latest COVID-19 surge.

age Dick.” But rather than grafting a contemporary morality tale about politics onto Shakespeare’s original text (as has often been done), Lew said the play shines light on “prejudgments” we apply to people by examining “the dual tropes of ‘you’re disabled, therefore you’re a devil’ versus ‘you’re disabled, therefore you’re an angel’ … this idea that you’re a saint because you’re disabled and overcoming your circumstance and you’re some kind of avatar of persistence. Those two extremes leave very little room for being human.” That psychological analysis extends to Shakespeare’s female characters. Rather than honoring his depiction of widowed Anne Margaret (Zurin Villanuena) as a mere foil showcasing Richard’s dazzling manipulations, Lew chose to “complexify” the role. More notably, he transformed Shakespeare’s Duke of Buckingham into Richard’s sarcastic, wheelchair-riding sidekick Buck — Barbara Buckingham, portrayed by actress Shannon DeVido, who, like Mozgala, has been with the play since its world premiere in 2018 at New York’s Public Theater. Lew said he “really embraced” Mozgala’s idea of casting another disabled actor, because it injects “multiple perspectives” into the play and prevents “just one person being the avatar” for disability. “As somebody able-bodied, I’ve had the real benefit of having Gregg and Shannon’s lived experience, but I also have to be held accountable,” he explained. “They’ve been really generous and they didn’t really have to be, and I don’t take that lightly, both because of the power dynamics but also because of the business side of things. Actors aren’t always going to speak up if they see something in the script that rubs against their experience, so you have to really care about the play to say anything, on their part. I really value that the two of them have stuck with this play since its inception.” At the top of the play, Richard derides Eddie (Louis Reyes McWilliams), the bullying football quarterback and class president (“He makes sport of governance, whereas I am one who is not shaped for sports”), and advises the audience: “I will vault past my current inglorious station not by campaigning, not by a pity vote, but by systematically destroying the competition. … I will hold dominion over all of this school.” In classroom scenes and a Sadie Hawkins dance, Lew “smashes together contemporary high school speak and higher Shakespearean language” to show Richard deploying language as a weapon — a way to distinguish himself from and, when possible, verbally demolish his peers. In contrast with Shakespeare’s “deterministic” presentation (“He’s evil because he’s disabled”), Lew explores the “environmental context” that darkened Richard’s psyche. (“Do people treat me this way because I’m disabled or just because I’m a dick, or do I act like a dick because they treat me this way?”) Lew likens Richard’s Machiavellian philosophy and its corrosive effects to “a coat that is too big for him that he’s trying on, and by the end of the play, he fits the coat.” The production, which was originally scheduled to open on the Pasadena Playhouse stage, will instead stream digitally beginning Feb. 3, a move prompted by the latest COVID-19 surge. Co-produced by the Pasadena Playhouse, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and Huntington Theatre Company, the performance was recorded several weeks ago in Boston. Playhouse Producing Artistic Director Danny Feldman noted in a press statement that streaming will allow the theatre to still honor its “commitments to pay the artists and crew who have worked so hard to make this show happen during these challenging times.” Lew expressed disappointment that the cast will not have the opportunity to feed off of live audience response but said that “the capture of it is really good and the spirit of the play is in there,” so he is excited that streaming will introduce the play to a broader audience. “Within the disabled community, access to the theater is a huge issue. What I love about the streaming is it takes down a lot of barriers to being able to see the work. So, I hope it becomes a more permanent feature if it lets more people experience theater.”

Sandra Tsing Loh is a longtime NPR and KPCC commentator, known for her show “Loh Down on Science.”

Live radio show captures local quirkiness

W

By Bridgette M. Redman Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

ho needs a prairie when you have the twin cities of Pasadena and Altadena? Radio show lovers who hold a special place in their heart for the Garrison Keillor program of old will want to tune in to Sandra Tsing Loh’s plans to celebrate the quirkiness of living in the ’Denas in her live radio show at the iconic Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena. Running monthly for the next year — barring pandemic hiccups — the live show is lining up local guest stars who spotlight everything that makes the cities unique. The first show is 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30. Loh knows what it takes to make radio sparkle, even when it isn’t being delivered over the airwaves. She’s a longtime NPR and KPCC commentator, known for her show “Loh Down on Science.” She’s lining up such guests as a Nobel prize-winning banjo player David Politzer — no, he didn’t win for playing the banjo, that’s just a bonus — and an MTV star who also does mystery theater. “For decades, I’ve been thinking about the ‘Prairie Home Companion’ — Garrison Keillor’s original show,” Loh said. “Thirty years ago, I did a song, ‘A Freeway Home Companion,’ that was a Los Angeles version. It still had a homey story, except with helicopters overhead. I’ve always loved that idea.” The brewing idea came to a boil at the end of last year, inspired by Bob Stane’s Coffee Gallery Backstage. During the pandemic, she met a friend for coffee there occasionally just to get out of the house. The two of them peeked into the back room,

where Stane hosts live performances. “You open a door and there is this adorable performance space,” Loh said. “It’s really old-fashioned, really homey. They’ve been doing music for years and years, and I thought it would be really fun to do something local with everything small scale.” While lots of people think of Beverly Hills or Sunset Boulevard when they think of Los Angeles, Loh is happy to make her show about Pasadena, Altadena and Eagle Rock, which she dubs “Eagle Rock-a-dena.” “They are these hilarious suburbs,” Loh said. “They’re sort of gentle. Some have drought-resistant gardening. There’s a little cheese shop of soy-based cheese. Instead of a slow week in Lake Wobegon, we’ll have, ‘It was a slow week in the ’Denas.’ It will be a similar, small-town feeling with hyperlocal stories and charming acoustic music.” It’s the type of show, she said, that feels like a tonic for the time, a treatment for all the people who are feeling stressed out and alienated. Like the show on which it is based, it will have fake sponsors, such as Altadena Goddess Wear, Peachables and Let’s Go to Fresno. The goddess pants are a continuation of her persona in an autobiographical humor book she wrote, “The Madwoman and the Roomba.” “You have these gentle pants where we’re not fat, we’re goddesses,” Loh said. “There is a boutique of goddess wear. It has a dusty store cat and has nice smelling lotions and candles for when you can’t cope with the rest of the world.” Peachables are … something. It might be a cheese. It might be a fruit. It might be a snack food. In one of the sketches, it’s offered up for the hostess faced with one guest who is gluten free and another who has a wheat allergy. “It’s for those of us who cannot face cheese without fruit,” Loh said. The “Let’s Go to Fresno” is for those who can’t afford a luxury vacation. Then there are homespun stories that capture the personality of the ’Denas. Loh talks about how drought gardening is a local thing. “It is almost a violent thing that we debate with our neighbors over who has the better bee, the most pollinator-friendly gardens,” Loh said. “It’s competitive gardening that is on a passive-aggressive level.” Other stories will include arguments in Trader Joe’s over soy milk and questions about parking or the eccentric billionaire in the hills who never comes out of his house. The stories will be told on their fictional new public radio station, KNDA. “The news is always very pleasant, and then there’s the weather,” Loh said. “There are no politics or COVID. It may be raging around us, but the news will have the weather or how someone’s cat wandered into someone else’s yard. It’s a satiric, but gentle, fiction.” Then there’s the music. She’s asking her guests to perform songs with a classic American twist — tunes that might have been heard on “The Ed Sullivan Show” or that people may find at hootenannies. The guests for the first January show are John Michael Higgins (“Pitch Perfect,” “Best in Show”), Maxayn Lewis (original Ikette, did Ma Rainey’s vocals in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Jim Turner (MTV’s “Randee of the Redwoods,” Duck’s Breath Mystery Theater), and Politzer. Higgins, who was also in “A Mighty Wind,” loves doing vocal arrangements. He’ll prepare them for the show and bring in vocalists. “He’s really obsessed with four-part harmonies,” Loh said. “He would like to do eight-part or 10-part. He has a complete vibe of being a great comedic actor and is completely fascinated by multipart harmonies. I’m so delighted he’s agreed (to be a part of the show).” Lewis is an actor, singer and original cast member of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Loh said she is not just an amazing singer but a great spirit. She expects Lewis will sing “Proud Mary” among other songs. Turner has prepared a comedy sketch about a new age guru who leads a workshop for women only and does it in a ridiculous way. His character, Loh said, is a bit of a charlatan but one who is sure to earn laughs. The shows are scheduled for the last Sunday of each month for the entire year. Each show will have a different theme, something that could be taken from an almanac. Loh says after two years of the pandemic, there is something wonderful about making music together, even if we can’t go to an arena with 10,000 people. “The program is a little over an hour, which is perfect for COVID times,” Loh said. “We’ll have a hootenanny at the end where the audience can sing along. If they bring an instrument, they can play it. We’ll do a couple songs all together, and people can sing or tap spoons.”
