“O

MG, what was that?” Ferociously howling winds, and the various crashes and shudders they inflicted upon our Altadena home, started on Jan. 21, in the late evening. My husband and I were hearing the havoc outside, when I saw a flash through my office window and heard a loud explosion. Ken said, “There goes the power.” He got out of bed and, thanks to years of experience dealing with Altadena “electrical oopsies,” started powering down our sensitive electronics that could get fried by either a brownout, blackout, or a surge if the power flipped back on in 10 minutes. That hard-fought experience is why all our devices are plugged into uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units. “This is getting more and more like Mexico,” I said. “When I was living there, I got used to power outages. But geez, even though Altadena was once part of Mexico, this is taking it a little too far!” In 2022, we must consider power interruptions highly probable as we confront increasingly disruptive weather events. This time, we got a very special 42-hour brownout and then a sixhour blackout. We had enough juice to keep our phones charged but no internet, heat or hot water; we had only each other and the dogs to keep us warm. We were on the verge of losing all the food in the refrigerator, so our dear friends Susan and Ed hustled up the hill to lend us their Yeti cooler. This internet-free time allowed me to reflect on what we’d do if electricity disappeared for good and we really had to live off the land. That notion may not be as far-fetched as you might think. I also wonder how many of our engineers and inventors are developing power sources that are not dependent on utility companies. By the way, some of those companies are trying to make it harder for Californians to implement solar power for their homes — bastards! But that’s another column. I remembered my mother teaching me how to make homemade soap from ashes, lye and tallow. She was only a generation away from pioneer homesteading and had many survival skills that have since been lost. In Altadena, we could basically eat off our “land,” such as it is. Nopalito salad is nutritious, and our cactus is plentiful. We have oranges and lemons galore and would never have to fret about scurvy! Meanwhile, I’m eyeing some inventions of my own. How could I harness the energy of our lazy dogs? They cadge off us at every opportunity. I think it’s important to make them work for their kibble, should the need arise. Mush, little doggies! Oh, don’t look at me with that sweet face: Get on that treadmill and keep walking. As soon as you produce enough power for the fridge, you’ll get your treat. And our own power is wasted every week when we simply walk to exercise. Pffft. You know where treadmills got their start, right? Treadmills were used to harness people and animals to power — you guessed it — mills! People, horses, dogs… anything that could turn a wheel. Mills to create more energy, control water, grind grain. And now, what are treadmills for? Tight butts and clothes I’m too lazy to hang in the closet. It seems like we could — eww, I almost said, “Kill two birds with one stone,” so violent and archaic. Although… wait a minute! Hunting may figure into some of our futures, so get those slingshots out, folks! But really, tight butts and energy? Now we’re talking.

Imagine converting our exercise machines into energy producers, “Soylent Green” notwithstanding. Biking, treadmills, recumbent machines and more could be producing electricity to power the gym you belong to. Our entertainment centers could double as our exercise room while pedaling to supply our television sets with power. Let’s show the utility companies we have alternatives beyond surf, wind and solar! Back to the blackout: There were people on the neighborhood app NextDoor who were agonizing over whether they should throw away foods that had been in an unpowered refrigerator after four or more hours. Really? This country’s citizens have already been bamboozled into thinking they need to throw away foods after their sell-by date, which is often way off! Hmmm. Stroke your chin and consider who benefits from you throwing away food that is perfectly good by using expiration dates that are artificially superconservative. The manufacturers of said products? The lobbyists who have resources to make you worry about things you need not worry about? Bingo. I fervently hope we get our local electrical infrastructure more radically weather-proofed. Meanwhile, transformers in Altadena are notorious for exploding if someone sneezes too hard, and many dogs need more exercise. Now “your best friend” can also be a potential partner in staying warm and having the lights stay on. Are you better off now than 18 months ago? Editor: The America economy improved more in President Biden’s 12 months than any president during the past 50 years. Bloomberg quoted Diane Swonk as saying, “Biden’s economic performance has proved unbeatable. We’ve never seen anything like the job market we’re seeing today. It is stunning.” A 3.9% unemployment rate and 6.4 million jobs added shows the biggest annual gain on record. President Biden has accomplished what McConnell and the Republicans tried to prevent. Are we better off now than we were 18 months ago? The answer would almost certainly be a resounding “yes.” Americans have an average of 50% more money in their bank accounts than before the start of the pandemic. Overall wages are up, increasing by as much as 11% in some sectors. Unemployment has fallen to an astonishing 3.9%. And amazingly, in the midst of a global pandemic, 11 million people were lifted out of poverty in 2020. All this is not to mention that President Biden just signed the largest investment in infrastructure in U.S. history. This historic accomplishment will lead to improved access to public transportation, expand broadband to close the digital divide, and provide high speed internet to every American, thus repairs to crumbling roads and bridges and clean water.

Christina Mauser scholarship accepting submissions

By Pasadena Weekly Staff

n partnership with the Christina Mauser Foundation, the Rose Bowl Institute is accepting submissions for the second Christina Mauser Scholarship Award. Applications for the scholarship are due March 1. Launched in 2021, the Christina Mauser Scholarship Award provides financial assistance to young female athletes who display extraordinary sportsmanship, leadership and citizenship qualities. Those traits were memorably exhibited by the award’s namesake: former award-winning student-athlete and educator Christina Mauser. She was working alongside Kobe Bryant as the assistant coach for the basketball legend’s Mamba Sports Academy when she died in the helicopter crash that killed nine people — including Bryant — on Jan. 26, 2020. The Christina Mauser Foundation was created by her husband, musician Matt Mauser, to foster the ideals that his wife displayed on and off the basketball court. In 2022, the foundation will partner once again with the Rose Bowl Institute to present scholarships in four different categories. One award will go to a student at Edison High School, Christina’s alma mater. The three remaining categories will offer awards to California-based, national and Hispanic applicants. Matt presented awards to the Christina Mauser Scholarship Award’s inaugural class of standout athletes — wrestler Samantha Parcell, soccer star Sophia Drake and lacrosse player Taya Riley — at Edison High School in June 2021. Funded by the Christina Mauser Foundation, the Christina Mauser Scholarship Award assists young female athletes in accomplishing their extraordinary goals, as well. Info: rosebowlinstitute.org

Kimberly Roberts of South Pasadena achieved a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in the fall 2021 semester at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. Henry Schnieders (College of Engineering, dean’s honor list) and India Scofield (College of Letters and Science, dean’s list)both of Altadena; Zongkun Liu (College of Engineering, dean’s honor list) and Jiajing Wang (School of Pharmacy, honor roll), both of Arcadia; Ian Eriksson (College of Letters and Science, dean’s list), Olivia Smith (School of Human Ecology, dean’s high honors) and Mia Valencia (School of Human Ecology, dean’s honor list), all of Pasadena; and Benjamin Fogel (College of Letters and Science, dean’s list) of South Pasadena were honored by University of Wisconsin-Madison. Students who achieve at a high level academically are recognized by the dean at the close of each semester. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must complete a minimum of 12 graded degree credits in that semester. Each university school or college sets its own GPA requirements for students to be eligible to receive the distinction. Most call the honor “dean’s list,” but some grant the “dean’s honor list” and “dean’s high honor list.”

Nature Conservancy names preserve after South Pasadena philanthropists

By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor

he Nature Conservancy created the Frank and Joan Randall Preserve, the nonprofit’s largest California preserve, thanks to a $50 million donation from the Randall family. “I wanted to do something while I’m still alive to see it take place, so that’s what I’ve done,” South Pasadena philanthropist Frank Randall said. “This project really caught my imagination because it would enable wildlife to travel north from the ranching areas where they’d become inbred without having a dedicated corridor, all the way up to the southern edge of the Sequoia National Forest.” Five times the size of Manhattan, the vast Frank and Joan Randall Preserve has been revered not only for its beauty but for its topography as well. The 72,000-acre area links four diverse ecoregions — the Sierra Nevada, the Central Valley, Mojave Desert and South Coast — to form a biodiverse wildlife corridor that will allow rare, threated and endangered animals to move freely between northern and southern California, helping complete a network of open-space lands from Canada to Mexico. “The ranchers who previously owned the property that we bought will still be there conducting their cattle operations,” Frank explained. “In the meantime, the Nature Conservancy will be sending in biologists and other environmental experts who will help them in efforts to make changes, if necessary, in their operations that would make it more environmentally advantageous for the wild animals to pass.” Frank’s love for the outdoors began when he was a child embarking on fishing and hiking excursions with his father around Yosemite and Lake Tahoe, before the gasoline rationing of World War II made such long drives from their home in South Pasadena impossible. After his father died, Frank returned to the open spaces that enchanted him before the war. “I saw that these open space areas were becoming not so open anymore because of subdivision,” Frank said. “That’s what got me into donating to these various organizations, seeing that the open spaces I really treasured were disappearing.” Due to increasing habitat fragmentation caused by human activity and development, wildlife corridors have become crucial to the survival of wildlife populations.

8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 02.03.22

They allow animals to move freely from one habitat patch to another. If populations become trapped in a single patch, they could be completely decimated by natural events such as fires, storms or disease. They are also at risk of becoming inbred, which can lead to genetic diseases or deformities and could collapse the population. Just over 100 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles, the Frank and Joan Randall Preserve will link a patchwork of ranchland across the southern Sierra Nevada and the Tehachapi Mountains, protecting animals such as mountain lions, eagles and bears from the threat of encroaching development by allowing them to roam across a broad range of elevations from the southern Sierra Nevada down to Castaic, to the Transverse Ranges that run east to west, and down to the Peninsular ranges. The Frank and Joan Randall Preserve’s sweeping grasslands, deserts, mountains and forests are also open to environmental organizations such as the Sierra Club and the Audubon Society as well as visitors who wish to go hiking or camping, though hunting is strictly prohibited. The project cost $65 million, with all but $15 million donated by the Randall family. He has contributed an additional $50 million for the Trust for Public Land to acquire the Banning Ranch property, an area of undeveloped wetland and coastal bluff spanning over 400 acres at the mouth of the Santa Ana River, representing the border between Newport Beach and Huntington Beach. “It’s the only undeveloped coastal property in Southern California,” Frank said with a smile. “I started these projects about two years ago, and they’ve both come into fruition, so I’m really happy. I hope I’m able to see them until the day I die and to see what these organizations, the Trust for Public Land and the Nature Conservancy, do with these properties.” The Banning Ranch purchase will be completed by the summer.

The Whitmore Sisters are Bonnie and Eleanor.

Whitmore Sisters’ harmonies, melodies extract beauty from grief By Bliss Bowen Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 02.03.22

When the pandemic shut down those tour plans, the three retreated to the Mastersons’ home in Los Angeles. There, as time turned elastic and artists everywhere scrambled to find new ways to practice their craft and connect with audiences, Chris persistently encouraged Eleanor and Bonnie to finally write and record songs for the album they’d been talking about making for most of their lives. Having grown up in Texas playing in their family’s band, Daddy & the Divas, the sisters had absorbed myriad sounds and styles that informed their individual releases as well as “Ghost Stories”: classic folk and rock songs their dad taught them, classical music from their opera singer mother, ’80s country and pop radio hits — an eclectic range of influences that color the album’s melodies and arrangements and Chris’ sympatico production choices. Now they’re anticipating a tour opening for the Jayhawks and playing on the Outlaw Country Cruise later this month. Throughout March, the Whitmore Sisters will open for the Mastersons at shows across the Midwest and the South. Fans will encounter cathartic release in songs such as “Friends We Leave Behind,” which illuminates how the Whitmore Sisters extract beauty and grace from loss. Its gentle uplift speaks to those who are re-examining life priorities and pondering next steps: “Love can pull you through And fear can take you down The friends we leave behind It’s what defines us How many will there be When we’re gone? In my heart, I’ll take you with me I will carry you, I will carry, carry on” To learn more about the Whitmore Sisters, visit thewhitmoresisters.com. “Ghost Stories” is available in brick-and-mortar stores and at the usual digital platforms.

T

he titular “Ghost Stories” of the Whitmore Sisters’ luminous new album are not spooky Halloween fare but rather melodic recollections of beloved friends and inspirations that have died in recent times. Bonnie and older sister Eleanor Whitmore have contributed to each other’s solo releases over the years, and Bonnie has played bass with the Mastersons, Eleanor’s acclaimed LA-based band with husband Chris Masterson, but “Ghost Stories” is their first official foray as a sibling duo. Not unlike the Mastersons, the music’s healing allure is rooted in harmony. Paul McCartney’s “On the Wings of a Nightingale,” originally written for the Everly Brothers, provides a sweet vehicle for the Whitmores’ alchemical vocal blend, while they take a sassy romp through the intersection of pop and country with Aaron Lee Tasjan’s “Big Heart Sick Mind.” Most of the songs, however, were written from their own experiences. Although the sisters have contributed to each other’s solo endeavors over the years, including via some co-writes, “Ghost Stories” represents the first time they have written so many songs together. Hopeful album opener “Learn to Fly” was inspired by their dad, a Navy carrier pilot who passed along his love of aviation: “It takes calculation/ Line up in formation/ A certain swagger comes to mind/ Careful the wager, but you love the danger/ Buckle up, it’s time to fly.” The title track’s haunting melancholy takes wing on Eleanor’s elegant violin solos while offering a subtle message: “We need to tend to our gardens/ Rooting out what is rotten/ Sowing the seeds/ Of what we ought to be/ What if we reimagine/ A system that isn’t broken?/ Reflect on ourselves/ See love in everyone.” The occasion to finally write and record the album was a blessing that emerged from pandemic-imposed burdens. In late 2019, the Mastersons were looking forward to a substantial tour promoting their fourth album, “No Time for Love Songs,” with opening sets from Bonnie, whose 2018 album “(Expletive) With Sad Girls” had spun many ears her way and whose “Last Will & Testament” would earn glowing reviews later in 2020.

A 1934 copy of “The Life and Times of Catherine de’ Medici” will be available.

Rare Books LA-Pasadena offers a variety of different rare books.

Rare book fair explores the industry ook dealers from around the world will converge on the Pasadena Convention Center for the Rare Books LA-Pasadena fair from Friday, Feb. 4, to Sunday, Feb. 6. The event will feature books, maps, scripts, letters, comic books, classic photography, Bibles, religious texts, original manuscripts or typescripts, art prints and other printed items from more than 100 dealers. Jen Johnson — co-producer for Rare Books LA book fairs and co-owner of Johnson Rare Books and Archives — said although many opt for digital editions of books these days, there are those who prefer and collect print editions. “We see people who fall in love with a book that they read, like ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ and they want to own a copy of it,” Johnson said. “They want to have it on their shelves, be able to access it, pick it up, curl up and read some pages, perhaps with some beautiful illustrations. I feel sorry for people who don’t read. I feel like they are missing out on a whole other world that is out there for them. There’s nothing like getting lost in a great book. “There’s just some things that you can’t see on a computer. You don’t get the heft, the weight and the feeling of a great book when you’re on the computer. You want to see it, touch it, smell it.” Johnson said collectors start the hobby for a variety of reasons. “I think people approach it from different angles,” she said. “Certainly, a lot of people have emotional attachments. Sometimes, we find people who want to deep dive into a certain topic. Some people don’t collect necessarily books as reading materials. They collect them as objects. They might be interested in the illustrations or the type of binding that it is in. And then there are people who collect because they want the ideal copy of what was issued at the time, in the original dustjacket perhaps.” Johnson has a collection of books, ticket stubs, brochures and other items associated with the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Along with the chance to see rare books and printed materials, the book fair offers

a chance to learn more about the process behind the industry. “We hope people will come away from the book fair with a new appreciation for the book — not just the story or the worlds that are printed, but the actual object itself,” she said. “There are so many fascinating components about the publication of a book, whether it’s illustrated, how it might be bound.” Treasure hunt At the event, patrons can talk with the dealers about their offerings. “They can provide a great resource and context for the information you’re seeing. They’re happy to share their time and experience,” Johnson said. This year at the fair, David Brass Rare Books of Calabasas will have a 1934 copy of “The Life and Times of Catherine de’ Medici” bound by Rivière & Son of London in maroon crushed levant morocco. The front cover is set with an oval portrait miniature set of Catherine de’ Medici, created by Miss C.B. Currie. Johnson Rare Books and Archives of Covina will offer a signed copy of an unproduced play by Ray Bradbury, which was based on his short story “A Medicine for Melancholy.” Carol Sandberg, owner of Michael R. Thompson Rare Books, said her inventory depends on trends. Right now, books on Black, Asian and Hispanic history have become more popular, as well as education and women’s studies pieces. She also carries 19th century fiction by lesser-known female authors. “Luckily, I’m a person of many interests. The ones that get emphasized depend very much on what the market is at any particular time,” said Sandberg, who collects memorabilia and books about the Salvation Army’s history. Young opera talents head to town for competition O

pera singers ages 21 to 32 will showcase their talents in front of an invitation-only audience on Feb. 13 during the Pasadena Vocal Competition, a nonprofit supported by the Pasadena Area Opera Trust. Established in 2016, the competition gives opportunities for young singers to be supported financially in their artistic endeavors. With the backing of the trust, selected singers will be awarded about $40,000 in cash. Pasadena Vocal Competition winners have gone on to perform with the Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Fe and the Metropolitan operas, according to Catherine Miller, the competition’s artistic director. “This year, we have more than 60 (competitors),” she says. “They travel here and take a live audition. It’s really a national competition. We have young talent from all over the country — East Coast, West Coast and everywhere in between.” The Feb. 13 final round was scheduled as a concert in front of a mask-wearing audience, but, according to Miller, that was changed to invitation only because of the pandemic. “We encourage all interested audience members to check out our website for details and updates,” Miller says. The winners will be announced at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at pasadenavocalcompetition.org, via a broadcast. The 2022 iteration marks the competition’s fifth year under the moniker Pasadena Vocal Competition and its second as a nonprofit. Entrants must submit four selections — three arias, one of each in English, Italian and a foreign language other than Italian, and a Broadway-style song. The challenges of music Miller is a talent in her own right, who understands the challenges and thrills of a music career. “I’m an operatic coach and pianist,” she says. “I coach these singers on their roles. I help with pronunciation. I teach them notes, pitches, musicality and interpretation. I’m not really a voice teacher. “I work on everything technically.” A native Californian, Miller earned degrees from USC and The Juilliard School, and was also honored as a Fulbright Scholar at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. Miller is also a member of the music staff at San Diego Opera and a collaborative pianist and coach. She appeared with renowned soprano Angel Blue at the likes of The Kennedy Center, Wigmore Hall and The Ravinia Festival. Recent collaborations with tenor Nathan Granner and soprano Jamie Chamberlin have included Opera Orlando’s Opera on Park Concert Series, LA Made at the LA Public Library with Long Beach Opera, and the Community Concert Series in El Dorado. Most recently, Miller served as principal pianist for San Diego Opera’s drive-in production of “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” and will serve as principal pianist for their 2022 production of “Romeo et Juliette.” For Maestro Gustavo Dudamel, she served as the principal pianist on productions of “Aida,” “Rigoletto” and “Turandot” as part of several Hollywood Bowl

summer seasons. For the LA Phil, she was principal pianist on productions of “The Tempest” and Meredith Monk’s “Atlas,” both performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Storied history From 1967 to 2018, Pasadena Opera Guild patrons funded the Pasadena Area Opera Trust. Miller calls the guild a “social group with a purpose,” as it provided financial support to young opera singers and an in-school opera performance for Pasadena elementary school students. The organization has not been able to perform in schools, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Pasadena Opera Guild was a social group of ladies that started in the late 1960s,” Miller says. “They started this trust and grew. Unfortunately, the guild folded four years ago. Membership was dwindling and it was difficult to find treasurer and president. However, they left behind this trust, which is quite substantial. Its purpose is to support young operatic talent.” This year, Miller says, the competition — formerly known as Mentoris Vocal Competition — is giving away $40,000, which is a “record amount,” among a number of singers. The lowest amount is $3,000. “I’m a ‘spread-the-wealth’ type,” she says. “These opera singers really need encouragement because of the pandemic. They couldn’t sing live. For the eight finalists, four will get at least $3,000.” The 2021 winner was baritone Blake Denson from the Houston Grand Opera Young Artists Vocal Academy. “The fact that he won first place last year really helped him,” Miller says. “He has contracts now for the next couple of years. “He only received $5,000 because we only gave away $25,000. Our funding depends on how much money the trust can give us. However, Blake has been hired in a number of national and international opera houses I think, partly, because of the fact he won first place with us.” A semifinalist in 2021, Ashlyn Brown is a lyric-mezzo soprano making her young artist debut with the Sarasota Opera. In May, she leaves Florida for New Mexico, where she’ll take part in a similar program with the Santa Fe Opera. “I was a part of the competition during a very unique time,” Brown says. “We were virtual and adapting to the pandemic in March 2021. It was really amazing to be part of something that was persevering through these wild times. Those of us with larger voices, we had to find a way to record ourselves in a way that properly (shared) our voices.” Brown adds that the Pasadena Vocal Competition helped her do what she loves during a trying time. “Music in the time of COVID-19 is still tremendously challenging,” she says. “At any moment, we can get closed down again. Getting to do something to make music, to be doing our art through all of this, was incredible. Even though I was not a winner, it was an honor to get to be a part of something like this.”

2022 semifinalists The Pasadena Vocal Competition has unveiled its 2022 semifinalists. The winners will be announced at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at pasadenavocalcompetition.org, via a broadcast. s part of its 100th-year celebration, the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation will host its first celebrity centennial golf tournament on Monday, May 16, at the private Lakeside Golf Club in Burbank. All tournament participants will compete and play one of Southern California’s most iconic courses alongside legendary athletes and celebrities who have influenced the stadium’s rich history and the area. Rose Bowl Stadium participants will receive a customized gift bag. The event proceeds will directly benefit the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation’s mission to preserve, protect and enhance the Rose Bowl Stadium’s future as a National Historic Landmark. Participation is tax deductible, minus the value of any benefits received in support of the Rose Bowl Stadium’s centennial birthday. Opening in 1924 and sitting in the shadows of some of Los Angeles’s most famous movie studios, Lakeside Golf Club remains one the most coveted rounds of golf in Southern California and the Western United States. America’s Stadium is celebrating its centennial, which began on New Year’s Day. Later this year, it plans to reschedule the Rose Bowl Party of the Century as the venue’s formal birthday party held on the iconic stadium turf. The original Party of the Century date was postponed due to the pandemic. Participants in the golf tournament can receive access to discounted Party of the Century packages for a cost-saving to attend both coveted Centennial events. he renowned bookstore Vroman’s is hosting more top-notch virtual programs throughout February. The “Vroman’s Live” events are held virtually. Register through vromansbookstore.com. Anyone with questions is asked to email email@vromansbookstore.com. Marc Brown discusses “Believe in Yourself: What We Learned from ‘Arthur’” 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2 As the award-winning “Arthur” TV series reaches its 25th anniversary, what better way to celebrate America’s favorite aardvark than this collection of life lessons perfect for graduations and other milestones? Join Arthur and his friends as they share the funniest and most heartfelt moments from the country’s longest-running children’s TV show and classic book series created by master storyteller Marc Brown. This treasure trove of quotes and life lessons is divided into five sections. Joe Ide discusses “The Goodbye Coast: A Philip Marlowe Novel” 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 Raymond Chandler’s iconic detective Philip Marlowe gets a dramatic and colorful reinvention at the hands of award-winning novelist Joe Ide. The seductive and relentless figure Marlowe is vividly reimagined in present-day Los Angeles. Here is a city of scheming Malibu actresses, ruthless gang members, virulent inequality and washed-out police. Ide imagines a Marlowe very much of our

time: He’s a quiet, lonely and remarkably capable and confident private detective, though he lives beneath the shadow of his father, a once-decorated LAPD homicide detective, famous throughout the city, who’s given in to drink after the death of Marlowe’s mother. Marlowe, against his better judgment, accepts two missing person cases — the first, a daughter of a faded, tyrannical Hollywood starlet, and the second, a British child stolen from his mother by his father. At the center of “The Goodbye Coast” is Marlowe’s troubled and confounding relationship with his father, a son who despises yet respects his dad, and a dad who’s unable to hide his bitter disappointment with his grown boy. Steeped in the richly detailed ethnic neighborhoods of modern LA, Ide’s “The Goodbye Coast” is a bold recreation that is viciously funny, ingeniously plotted and surprisingly tender. Michelle Tam discusses “Nom Nom Paleo, 3: Let’s Go!” 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4 Michelle Tam and Henry Fong know that the healthiest meal is the one you make yourself, so they’re all about getting you off your butts and into the kitchen. Whether you’re cooking for yourself, whipping up a family dinner or preparing a special-occasion feast, “Nom Nom Paleo: Let’s Go!” will inspire you with deliciously nourishing meals. Weeknight suppers should be healthy and flavor-packed but also fast and simple. Weekends and celebrations, on the other hand, are the perfect excuse to craft elevated (but easy) crowd-pleasers. This cookbook offers crazy-delicious recipes for all occasions,

and every single one is free of grains, gluten, dairy and refined sugar. Better yet? No one in your family will notice what’s missing! As always, “Nom Nom Paleo’s” recipes reflect the diverse cuisines Tam grew up with and culinary ideas from her travels. Often Asian inspired, Tam’s unfussy recipes maximize flavor, optimize whole foods, and are presented with photos of each step so they’re absolutely foolproof — even for novice cooks. Lisa Lutz, in conversation with Chris Pavone, discusses “The Accomplice” 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8 Owen Mann is charming, privileged and chronically dissatisfied. Luna Grey is secretive, cautious and pragmatic. Despite their differences, they form a bond the moment they meet in college. Their names soon become indivisible — Owen and Luna — and stay that way even after an unexplained death rocks their social circle. They’re still best friends years later, when Luna finds Owen’s wife brutally murdered. The police investigation sheds light on some long-hidden secrets, but it can’t penetrate the wall of mystery that surrounds Owen. To get to the heart of what happened and why, Luna has to dig up the one secret she’s spent her whole life burying. “The Accomplice” brilliantly examines the bonds of shared history, what it costs to break them, and what happens when you start wondering how well you know the one person who truly knows you. Randal J. Metz presents “Enchanted Strings: Bob Baker Marionette Theater” 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 Since 1963, the Bob Baker Marionette Theater has enchanted families in Los Angeles and beyond with their delightful marionette performances. It isn’t fall in Los Angeles without a showing of the Halloween Spooktacular, and no Christmas season is complete without a puppet performance of “The Nutcracker.” Now, for the first time, the visual history of the theater has been captured in the pages of a book, from Bob Baker’s earliest days to the theater’s transformation into a thriving nonprofit. The text describes a theater at the height of its powers, hosting performances for school children and collaborating with Disney on live-action films. The images bring some of Bob Baker’s most beloved shows to life, featuring new and vintage photographs of performances, introducing iconic characters like “The Black Cat” and “Bobo the Clown.” Heather O’Neill, in conversation with Edward Carey, discusses “When We Lost Our Heads” 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 Charismatic Marie Antoine is the daughter of the richest man in 19th century Montreal. She has everything she wants, except for a best friend — until clever, scheming Sadie Arnett moves to the neighborhood. Immediately united by their passion and intensity, Marie and Sadie attract and repel each other in ways that thrill them both. Their games soon become tinged with risk, even violence. Forced to separate by the adults around them, they spend years engaged in acts of alternating innocence and depravity. And when a singular event brings them back together, the dizzying effects will upend the city. Traveling from a repressive finishing school to a vibrant brothel, taking readers firsthand into the brutality of factory life and the opulent lives of Montreal’s wealthy, “When We Lost Our Heads” explores gender, sex, desire, class, and the power of the

human heart when it can’t let someone go. Daniel A. Olivas, in conversation with Professor Alvaro Huerta, discusses “How to Date a Flying Mexican” 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 During the pandemic and in the wake of his father’s death, Daniel A. Olivas set upon the task of reviewing almost 25 years’ worth of his short stories that had been published in various collections or as parts of novels. He found many of his narratives fell within the world of magic, fairy tales, fables and dystopian futures. This review also revealed that many of his fictions confronted — either directly or obliquely — questions of morality, justice and self-determination while being deeply steeped in Chicano and Mexican culture. Olivas decided to choose his favorite tales from the many scores of stories that populated his published works. He added to the mix two recent stories — one dystopian, the other magical — both of which confront the last administration’s anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies. The result is “How to Date a Flying Mexican: New and Collected Stories.” Though his books have been taught in colleges and high schools across the country for over two decades, this collection brings together some of his most unforgettable strange tales that will be enjoyed, again, by his fans, and anew for readers who have not, as yet, experienced Olivas’ distinct fiction. Patt Morrison discusses “Rio-LA: Tales from the Los Angeles River” 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24 “Rio-LA: Tales from the Los Angeles River,” 20th anniversary edition, traces the history and lore of the Los Angeles River. When the book was first published in 2001, few people even regarded the river, but because of Morrison’s devotion to the topic, LA River has been rediscovered. The river has become the center of the county’s 2021 master plan to reestablish it as the heart of the city, its lifeline to all things positive: an antidote to homelessness; a source of increased affordable housing; new jobs; good health and serenity. Morrison traces this rediscovery in her extensive new “Afterword,” following pages of river history, dating back to before the founding of the pueblo called Los Angeles. Carol Wallace and Rick Hamlin present “Our Kind of People” and “Even Silence is Praise” 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25 In “Our Kind of People,” Helen Wilcox has one desire: to successfully launch her daughters into society. From the upper crust herself, Helen’s unconventional — if happy — marriage has made the girls’ social position precarious. Then her husband gambles the family fortunes on an elevated railroad that he claims will transform the face of the city and the way the people of New York live, but will it ruin the Wilcoxes first? As daughters Jemima and Alice navigate the rise and fall of their family — each is forced to re-examine who she is and even who she is meant to love. From the author of “To Marry an English Lord,” an inspiration for “Downton Abbey,” comes a charming and cutthroat tale of a world in which an invitation or an avoided glance can be the difference between fortune and ruin. “Even Silence Is Praise: Quiet Your Mind and Awaken Your Soul with Christian Meditation.” Through stories, practical advice and helpful prompts, Rick Hamlin guides Christians to center their minds and hearts on God as they seek to hear the still small voice above all the noise and chaos in the world. 02.03.22 | PASADENA WEEKLY 17
