This week’s topic: Your Credit Score You know the saying: “don’t judge a book by its cover?” Your credit score is that cover that creditors, lenders, landlords, and even some employers use to make certain decisions about you and your financial stability. If you feel like you missed a lecture on this in High School, don’t worry - Prominent Financial Group has got you covered with tips on how to build and maintain a healthy credit score! What is a credit score?

A credit score is a number between 300 and 850 and is a numerical representation of a person’s likelihood to repay a debt. From a lender’s perspective, a higher credit score signals that a borrower is lower risk and more likely to make timely payments. What affects your credit score?

There are 5 main factors that affect your credit score. Payment history, amounts owed, credit history length, credit mix, and new credit. Organizing is key - with many tools at your disposal such as calendar reminders for due dates, online app alerts, and even automatic payment setup that could help ensure your payments are always made on time. How early can I start building my credit score?

Though the minimum age to legally sign a credit card contract is 18, you can help your teen get a head start by making them an authorized user on your existing credit cards. There is no legal age limit to become an authorized user, but it’s always a good idea to double check with each creditor

separately. Adding a your child as an authorized user can help a young person build credit as the minor gets to “piggyback” on the good credit behavior of the original cardmember. How does my credit score impact my mortgage loan?

Your credit score is one of the biggest factors that impacts the interest rate you’re offered on your loan. The higher your score, the more appealing you look to the banks, and the lower your rate will be. In addition, each loan program has different FICO minimum requirements, so you may or may not qualify for a loan based on where your score is. Can I quickly boost my credit score?

In most cases - yes! Remember do not do this without an expert’s guidance. Sometimes people may assume that closing a credit card will increase their score, however that could potentially have an opposite effect versus if you did a pay down of a certain balance. When you’re ready to apply for a mortgage and to make sure you have a good working strategy, give us a call and we’ll happily provide you with proper guidance. I

was raised in South Dakota. The only Jewish person I was familiar with was Anne Frank… and, of course, Jesus. The third Jewish person I knew, I married. His family was mortified and had to muster every “good sport” molecule they had to accept his choice of me as his fiancée: a shiksa, a non-Jewish woman. Oy vey! My ultra Norwegian American Lutheran grandmother morphed her own religious bigotry into bittersweet acceptance. Grandma walked up to my handsome new groom at our wedding reception. She peered up at him and yelled as only slightly deaf people can bellow: “Your people killed my savior… but you seem like a nice boy!” Uff da! (“Uff da” is Norwegian for “oy vey.”) Before our wedding, I offered to convert to Judaism because, frankly, from what I could see, the world needed more Jews. Who doesn’t like witty, frugal shoppers and conversationalists who throw in oh-so-handy Yiddish expressions? I figured I could add to the numbers. My new husband, petrified at the idea of me becoming Jewish, envisioned my conversion and gently talked me out of it. He was clearly familiar with my meshuggah approach to life — slightly nuts, but with zeal! He realized if I converted, I would next become a rabbi, remodel the kitchen to accommodate kosher requirements, and he’d spend his adult life like his childhood: going to temple all the time and wearing things on his head. (My new hubby was a bareheaded-type guy.) Imagine his chagrin when I announced, “I’m creating a Seder!” I loved the idea of Seder, the ritual held at Passover commemorating the Jews’ exodus from Egypt at the hands of pharoah. Of course, we all have pharaohs we need deliverance from, whether that pharaoh literally enslaves a whole race or is the newly elected official who wants to prevent you from getting birth control or telling you who you can or can’t marry. Seder is a beloved tradition for everyone, Jew and shiksa alike. A theater producer at the time, I roped in every theater friend I could find and created a Seder production team — not all shiksas; some of us actually knew what we were doing. We also decided our Seder would be a feminist one and we would include — hold on to your yarmulkes — women! Being an ardent women’s rights advocate, I was taken aback by some of the customs my husband had grown up with. His mom had dairy dishes, meat dishes, Passover dairy dishes and Passover meat dishes. I’m thinking, “Geez, women did not make up these rules.” Then, the patriarchs had the audacity to create ritual texts for the Seder (called a Haggadah) and not have one mention of women in the flight from Egypt? Really? Come on! Let my people go, except we’ll keep our women serving us like slaves. You let us go! Oh, sure, we were supposed to gather manna, milk the goats, clean the tents, bake the unleavened bread — quickly! — keep the kids quiet, separate the meat and dairy dishes and the separate set of Passover dishes, prepare the table and cook the special Passover meal while smiling at relatives we don’t really like… but then, to not even have a nod to our own unique form of oppression while we wait on you patriarchs? Not at our table! This goyishe momma wasn’t having any of the same ol’ same ol’ regarding an ancient religion celebrating liberation. I also have the same disdain for the Christian holiday of Christmas, where the women do all the food shopping and prepping, wrapping of gifts, and decorating while Santa gets all the credit. My first shiksa Passover finally came to pass, excuse the expression, and was a sit-down Seder for 60 people. As custom dictates, we set a place for the wandering prophet Elijah if he decides to return. As it turns out, Elijah probably did more to wipe out the matriarchal goddess cultures than any of other the prophets did, but that’s another column. In any event, we set a place for Miriam, too, just in case she wanted to also drop by. After all, if it hadn’t been for Miriam and that ancient shiksa Princess Bisyah, pharaoh’s daughter, Moses would have had a very different fate

than leading the Jews — females and males — out of Egypt. There have always been women and girls throughout history, making everyone’s history possible. This year, during my shiksa Seder, each guest will reflect on: 1. The current oppression in their lives: “I feel enslaved by the addiction to please everyone all the time,” “I think I have a drinking problem” or “I have a compulsion to customize holidays to my personal liking.” 2. Actions they could take in the coming year to cut those self-designed ropes of said enslavement. 3. Five things they are grateful for. Sadly, my marriage to my first husband ended, but I’ll always be grateful to him for being a mensch and opening the door to a rich heritage I continue to celebrate. Happy Pesach, everyone! Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo denied accusations that the city has violated California Senate Bill 9.

Mayor Gordo hits back at attorney general’s notice

he housing shortage crisis has devastated communities across California as an estimated 160,000 people throughout the state will sleep either outside or in cars or shelters tonight, according to reports. Communities across LA County, including Pasadena, have seen the impacts of this crisis firsthand, though in a recent letter to the city of Pasadena, California Attorney General Rob Bonta has accused the city of violating California Senate Bill 9, which looks to combat the statewide housing crisis by promoting supply and affordability. It’s an accusation that Mayor Victor Gordo denied in a letter to both the state attorney general

and Pasadena residents on April 1. “Pasadena is entitled to be proud of its many accomplishments, including its record of creating much-needed housing, and as your Mayor, I cannot allow this unfounded criticism to go unanswered,” Gordo said. “It has long been obvious that additional affordable housing is needed in California, and Pasadena’s leadership supports that view. But the approach of SB 9 is wrongheaded in taking a cookie-cutter approach to this need and treating all cities the same regardless of their particular facts.” The law, which went into effect on Jan. 1, allows homeowners to build up to four residential units on a single-family lot. On Dec. 6, 2021, Pasadena adopted Urgency Ordinance No. 7384, allowing the city to exempt “landmark districts” from SB 9 requirements to maintain historically and culturally significant sections of the city while restricting overdevelopment in those certain areas. Although Pasadena extended its ordinance on Jan.10, the state attorney general said he believes that the ordinance is invalid and must be repealed. “Pasadena’s urgency ordinance undermines SB 9 and denies residents the opportunity to create sorely needed additional housing, under the guise of protecting ‘landmark districts,’” Bonta said. “Right now, California is facing a housing crisis of epic proportions, and it’s going to take all of us, doing our part, to alleviate its worst effects. At the California Department of Justice, we’re in this fight for the long haul. I urge cities to take seriously their obligations under state housing laws. If you don’t, we will hold you accountable.” According to Bonta, the qualifications for an SB 9 exemption require that an individual site is part of either a landmark, historic property or historic district; that there must be evidence of that site’s historical importance; and that the exemption does not apply to entire districts. While Bonta asserted that the city of Pasadena is in violation of state law by claiming exemptions for broad districts, Gordo has fervently defended the city’s position. “The idea is to protect Pasadena’s unique architecture, the character of its neighborhoods, and the educational and cultural resources that our unique community holds,” Gordo said. “The city made a determination that we could not allow the destruction of these important elements of our city. These valued or irreplaceable resources in our city have been, and must continue to be, protected from overdevelopment and, importantly, remain available for study by planners, historians, architects, students and others around the world.” In 1983, the city of Pasadena adopted a “historic preservation ordinance” and, as a certified local government, can use the certification to designate historically significant neighborhoods as local landmark districts as well as register them on the National Register of Historic Places if they are determined to be of national significance. While the city will look to protect historical and cultural landmarks, Gordo has acknowledged the severity of the housing shortage across the state and strongly agrees that every city should do their part to help. The city of Pasadena recently built and retained 3,000 units of affordable housing and currently has 1,021 affordable units awaiting development with an additional 2,200 units under review. The city has also permitted and entitled just under 5,000 new residential units in the last housing element cycle. “We will not allow Sacramento officials or media opinion makers to attack and mis-define us, as they do not know our city — the Pasadena that we all cherish,” Gordo said. “Going forward, I respectfully encourage our attorney general to get to know us before taking to Twitter to wrongfully and unfairly tarnish Pasadena’s good name.” Gordo insisted that, though the city’s interpretation of SB 9 may differ from the attorney general’s in regard to landmark districts, Pasadena has complied with the letter and intent of SB 9 and remains committed to addressing the state’s housing crisis.

Virtual screening, discussion focuses on ‘Manzanar’ By Pasadena Weekly Staff

T

he “Movies That Matter” series continues this spring with a virtual screening of the climate crisis documentary “Manzanar, Diverted: When Water Becomes Dust,” directed and produced by Ann Kaneko and produced by Jin Yoo-Kim, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 20. The virtual screening (84 minutes) is followed by a panel discussion of the film and its impact, featuring director/ producer Kaneko and Maximilian Christman, Caltech sustainability manager. While the screening is free, reservations are required. For more information about the film and to reserve a spot, visit https://bit.ly/ MoviesThatMatterPasadena. Sustainability is defined by the three pillars of environmental conservation, economic prosperity and social equity. This last pillar often receives little attention compared to the first two despite environmental justice, diversity and equity being key considerations for a truly sustainable world. Caltech Sustainability aims to tackle this from a campus operations perspective by tackling energy, water, and waste produced from activities on campus but also by collaborating with other groups to engage students, faculty and staff in crafting and executing on these projects. The filmmakers hope that the audience can gain an appreciation of water and land management and a clearer grasp of their impacts on distant communities where water has been extracted for their consumption. Sitting at the foot of the majestic snow-capped Sierras, Manzanar, the WWII concentration camp, becomes the confluence for memories of Payahuunadü, the nowparched “land of flowing water.” Intergenerational women from Native American, Japanese American and rancher communities come together to form an unexpected alliance to defend their land and water from Los Angeles. “Through my research, I was stunned and fascinated by the implications of what seemed like minor footnotes in American history,” Kaneko said. “During the scare of Trump’s Muslim ban, many pointed to Executive Order 9066, but I realized that the real precedence for this racist mentality in the United States was not Japanese American incarceration. It was the violent forced removal and confinement of Indigenous people and the unfathomable trafficking of enslaved Africans to this continent, all in the name of colonization and racism. “Previously on the same land as the World War II Japanese concentration camp, Native Americans had the land taken from them. The film shows the repeated and shared histories of what happens when entire groups are scapegoated. Audiences will have greater understanding of how forced removals of communities are motivated by racism and colonialist desires to control land and resources.” The film won the Best Documentary Award at the San Diego Asian Film Festival, and it was nominated for the Best Music Score at the IDA Documentary Awards in 2021. Earth Day, held annually since 1970, has offered a continuing opportunity to recognize the human role in environmental protection. Caltech Sustainability Programs hopes that collaboration with other Caltech groups with seemingly distinct missions will illustrate the interdisciplinary nature with which the world’s greatest sustainability problems must be addressed. Environmental justice must be a leading theme as we look to address the climate crisis and other sustainability challenges.

ycamores will host a tree-planting ceremony in honor of its 120th anniversary and its shared history and partnership with Pasadena Tournament of Roses on Friday, April 29, which doubles as Arbor Day. Sycamores invites the public to attend the 2 p.m. ceremony at Tournament House, 391 S. Orange Grove, Pasadena. The two Pasadena organizations have shared historic ties in the community, dating back to the creation of Sycamores as Pasadena’s first orphanage in 1902. The Pasadena Children’s Training Society, later named Sycamores, was established by Fannie Rowland, the wife of Dr. Francis F. Rowland, a founder of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses and the first grand marshal of the Rose Parade in 1890. More recently, Sycamores partnered with the Tournament of Roses by providing wellness support to members of the 2022 Royal Court. Today, Sycamores, a Pasadena-based behavioral health and child welfare agency, provides programs and services for underserved children, young adults and families through a network of locations throughout Southern California. “Planting a sycamore tree at the Tournament House honors our rich history and deep roots in the community,” said Debra Manners, Sycamores president and chief executive officer. “While much has changed during our 120 years, Sycamores’ unconditional, whatever-it-takes approach to care has never wavered and continues to help individuals create a better life.” To attend this free event, RSVP by Wednesday, April 20, to Melissa Pittson at mpittson@sycamores.org or 626-395-7100, ext. 2018.

The Pasadena Presbyterian Church was the first church built in Pasadena in 1875 and has since become a home for music and worship in the community.

Pasadena church hosts Good Friday Devotional Concert s the oldest church in the city, the Pasadena Presbyterian Church has been a central part of the community since 1875. It continues its mission with the 24th annual Good Friday Devotional Concert on April 15. The concert is presented by Friends of Music, PPC’s outreach and service arm to Pasadena and its surrounding communities. It holds a series of annual concerts and recitals featuring the resident ensembles, professional Friends of Music Orchestra, and visiting artists. “The Good Friday program is designed to appeal to anyone who wants a meditative moment,” said Dr. Timothy Howard, director of music and organist. “I want people to have a rich experience whether they consider it a religious experience or not. It’s always beautiful music, and who doesn’t want to come and hear beautiful music?” One such piece is Sir Karl Jenkins’ “Stabat Mater,” which Howard came across nearly 14 years ago and performed in Carnegie Hall with Jenkins in attendance in 2011. Bonnie Snell Schindler will be the alto soloist for the Jenkins piece, which is a 13th century Roman Catholic hymn written in Latin by Jacopone da Todi as a portrayal of Mary, the mother of Jesus, standing at the foot of the cross while her son is being crucified on Good Friday. As a musician, Jenkins has been classically trained and delved into pop and rock styles, a diversity that has translated into his writing. For this concert, the church’s choir will sing long phrases that often hold notes for much longer than a singer can hold a breath, so the choir will engage in a staggered breathing technique. “That kind of feeling transports people somewhere not quite earthly in many

cases, which makes it perfect for this particular concert,” Howard explained. “It’s not esoteric music in any way, shape or form. It is very friendly music, and it’s easy to get lost in the combination of the music and the text.” Howard not only hopes to move the audience through the music but through its meaning as well. During the concert, the church will project supertitles above the choir in English and Spanish and Korean, the three languages of PPC, so that guests who don’t know Latin, Aramaic or Hebrew will still be able to understand the message of the pieces. The evening will end with Belgian organist Joseph Jongen’s “Hymne,” one of Jongen’s works that is rarely performed live. The performance will feature PPC’s Aeolian Skinner organ — among the largest and most versatile pipe organs in Southern California with more than 6,300 pipes — played by Michelle Kardos. “It’s about an 8-minute piece,” Howard said. “It’s not in the same exact style as Jenkins, but it’s very complimentary in compositional style and it really gives PPC’s massive Aeolian Skinner organ time to shine.” Admission to the Good Friday Devotional Concert is free, though donations to Friends of Music are encouraged.

Sunken gardens wrap around the home with scenic paths leading down to the hidden edges of the property. “When you walk through, it’s almost overwhelming to see the beautiful stained glass windows past the entry,” Farley said. “It also has a large ground, so we have plenty of room for our shops and restaurant as well as having outdoor garden space.” Following just four short months of renovation, over 25,000 guests will tour through the numerous interior and landscape design spaces highlighting cutting-edge trends in high-style living from designers across the San Gabriel Valley and LA County, including local Pasadena and South Pasadena designers Karen Billman, Jeanne Chung, Denise Bosley, Denise Renalli, Samantha Williams, Gwen Sukeena, Robert Frank, Dona Dockendorf and James Hernandez. This year’s event will also showcase local musicians, speakers, and boutique and craft merchants to celebrate the vibrant community of South Pasadena. “It’s really core to our mission that we’re more than just a pretty house,” Farley explained. “We’re also all about music and music education, so having these performances I think will speak to that.” Throughout its history, PSHA has given more than $23 million to nonprofit organizations in support of music education and music therapy while continuing to support the LA Philharmonic and its learning programs for which the organization was first founded. Though a 2021 Showcase House was not possible due to the pandemic, the organization was able to host “June Bloom,” an outdoor garden party that raised more than $250,000 in one day. “We had over 2,000 people in one day go through three properties,” Farley recounted. “We were able to open up the gardens and have garden tours along with our shops and a food truck, and that was super successful. We were thinking of ways that we could continue to stay connected with the community until we could get back to having a showcase.” To learn more about the Showcase House of Design and to purchase tickets for the event, visit pasadenashowcase.org/tickets.

Adam Schwerner brings interactive exhibit to La Cañada Flintridge By Laura Latzko Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

Adam Schwerner’s exhibit “Your (Un)Natural Garden” blends landscape and art.

hrough his work, artist Adam Schwerner often finds a way to connect the natural world and art. His newest installation, “Your (Un) Natural Garden,” offers a new way to experience art at the Descanso Gardens. It will be on display throughout the landscape and in the Sturt Haaga Gallery and Boddy House from Saturday, April 16, to Sunday, Jan. 8. In the exhibition, Schwerner explores philosophical, personal, societal and psychological topics, including how should art be consumed and experienced. “One of the things that I think Descanso wants is to cause people to wonder and ask questions, and I think what we are doing will make that happen,” Schwerner said. The artist — who hails from New York and lives in SoCal — developed the idea for the show three years ago. Originally slated to open in 2020, it was delayed due to the COVID-19

The artist worked closely with the Descanso team as well as his good friend, Luis Gomez, who helped him build items for the exhibition in his garage studio. Sketches from the Descanso team have been used in the marketing material. Schwerner said it’s important to work collaboratively with a team, especially on installations. “I thrive when I’m working with people, as opposed to on my own. … I much prefer working with and getting contributions from others,” Schwerner said. The nine large-scale multimedia installations were designed to be interactive and accessible to different audiences and to spark discussion. “What was important to me was when people enter into the space, it’s not just about looking at something. It’s about touching something, hearing something, smelling something, experiencing something,” Schwerner said. Within the garden’s landscape are brightly colored Snakeaways, treelike structures that lead a path to the indoor exhibition spaces. “They live in the landscape, but they are certainly very alien from it and in contrast to the landscape,” Schwerner said. “It’s posing a question of what belongs in a landscape, what’s natural in a landscape, what’s unnatural in a landscape. We have used some things that are natural. We’ve made them different colors, so they are no longer natural, to some degree.” Visitors can add their personal touches to the Snakeways by tying wires to them. In an area called “All the Bells,” visitors will walk into a room filled with red light, silver walls and red ropes with brass bells hanging from the ceiling. The sounds from the bells will be projected into the gardens. This room has special meaning to Schwerner. He grew up to the sounds of chanting and bells with his Buddhist father, a poet and performance artist. The silver walls represent his mother, who painted the walls of their living room silver when she used the space as her art studio. A painter, sculptor, tap dancer, performance artist, playwright and singer, she fostered his love of the arts. With this bell-filled space, Schwerner explores the relationship between his parents with each other and with him following a divorce.

An area called “Agora” will have sculptural chairs and a meeting table, where visitors can gather to socialize. The furniture in this space pays homage to some of Schwerner’s favorite artists, including Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Yves Tanguy, Alberto Giacometti, Louise Bourgeois and Phyllida Barlow. Schwerner said with the political divisions and social isolation during COVID-19, it is important to have a space like this. “It became about being together again and being able to have conversations again because we haven’t been able to do that for so long. … The experience of living through the last three years made me want that space to be more inviting, fun and about being together,” Schwerner said. The space can be reserved for meetings of 12 to 13 people. Inside of the “Metamuseum” area, visitors can get a behind-the-scenes look at the exhibition and see sketches, drawings and notes related to it. Horticulture lover Schwerner has worked in the horticulture field for over 30 years for public and private institutions, including the Disneyland Resort. Throughout his career, he combined art and landscape with Artscape installations in places such as Chicago and Atlanta. He has also had a longtime interest in botanical gardens. He worked for a decade at the New York Botanical Garden and is a longtime member of the American Public

“When I was a preteen, teen and then afterward, they didn’t like each other at all,” Schwerner said. “And after a divorce, they just didn’t want to be in the same room for my entire life. Here to some degree, I’m having them in the same room because there are things that I have in the room that represent each of them. So, it’s forcing them to be together and get along.” “The Boa Room” — which is filled with 500 feature boas hanging from the ceiling — also honors his mother, who loved boas. “When she was having a lot of fun, she’d bring out a feather boa, have it around her neck and sing, dance and play. So, for me, the boas have that kind of connection,” Schwerner said. Another space called “The Uncomfy Room” will immerse guests in pink light. Before entering this room, visitors will hear a dissonance of sounds. “I’m also interested in people going into or experiencing things that they are uncomfortable about experiencing and then finding a way to enjoy it. We all in our lives have challenges that we need to move into,” Schwerner said. “Zeppelin Mass” greets guests, who are encouraged to make noise with their feet on the gravel and to move between hanging tapestries. The hanging structures form a central image of a blimp in flight that is about to crash, an allegory for larger climate issues impacting society. In “Manor Library,” the artist tried to counteract the space’s somber quality with whimsical, cylindrical wormlike sculptures. 16 PASADENA WEEKLY | 04.14.22

Gardens Association. Early on in his career as an artist, he used found materials from nature such as branches and rocks. For his exhibition “The Curious Garden,” he painted trees in vibrant colors. His newest exhibition, “Your (Un)Natural Garden,” was mainly created with recycled materials from Tierra Verde Industries in Irvine. “They take garbage in from house demolitions, from landscape operations and from furniture makers,” Schwerner said. “When people empty out their houses, garages or storage spaces, it comes to this place, dishes, refrigerators, bikes, couches, chairs, wood waste.” Schwerner used items such as scrap wood, electrical wire, computer parts, kitchenware, dishes, ladders, tables and chairs. Working with recycled bicycles for the first time, Schwerner disassembled them, and used the seats, wheels, tubes and wheel frames in several of the installations. His fascination with dumps started with his parents, who he would accompany to a dump in East Hampton as a child. “I think it’s really fun to not have to buy something. You can just use what other people have tossed out,” Schwerner said. For his newest exhibit, he looked for items that had histories and were in colors that had connections to people, places and moments in his life. “What I really like about materials that have a history is that you can almost see it in that object. You can almost feel it. You can almost see that it has had a story. Having that story makes the work that I’m producing deeper and more interesting,” Schwerner said.

“America’s Got Talent” stars, from left, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Terry Crews, Sofia Vergara and Simon Cowell.

‘AGT’ moves back into civic auditorium merica’s Got Talent” executive producers Sam Donnelly and Jason Raff find it difficult to choose highlights during their tenure with the NBC reality show. But one name keeps coming up: Grace VanderWaal. “I’ve been doing this for 17 years,” Raff said. “The first time we saw Grace VanderWaal, she left the audition room and that was a goosebump moment.” The Pasadena Civic Auditorium will once again provide the backdrop for “America’s Got Talent,” as the show is taping the auditions for its 17th season through Saturday, April 23. Returning celebrity judges are Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara and host Terry Crews. “We are thrilled to announce the return of ‘America’s Got Talent’ in Pasadena,” said Michael Ross, chief executive officer of the Pasadena Center Operating Company. “‘America’s Got Talent’ not only brings attention to Pasadena from the show’s millions of fans globally, but their presence is welcomed by our local hotels, restaurants and businesses.” Like years’ past, “America’s Got Talent” is a celebration of creativity and talent, featuring an array of singers, dancers, comedians, contortionists, impressionists, jugglers, magicians and ventriloquists, all vying to win America’s vote. The series was created by Cowell and is co-produced by Fremantle and Syco Entertainment. “We always aim for each season to be more surprising, more entertaining and more shocking than the season before,” Donnelly said. “Hopefully when you tune in, you’ll see all the things you love about ‘AGT.’” Raff said “thousands” of acts audition each season. Raff and Donnelly, who executive produce with Cowell, are just trying to find interesting entertainers to put in front of the judges panel. He said he and Donnelly are surprised by the talent.” “We have high hopes,” he said. “It’s always a surprise for us. People come on stage, and some do amazing and some do fail. Some are, in fact, amazing. “We’re producers, and we’re quite good. The judges are going to see hundreds of people. We have to select who they’re going to see. We can’t predict the future. We put as

many acts as we can in front of the judges. We see thousands. They see hundreds. One of these could have a lifelong impact.” Donnelly echoed that sentiment. “Grace walked into an audition room, and we had never heard of her before,” she said. “She did a song, ‘Ex’s & Oh’s’ (by Elle King). She has this raspy quality for a very little girl. “Then she had her own song, ‘I Don’t Know My Name.’ I thought, ‘Oh, my God. This is a rare talent.’ When she came on stage, we were invested in whether she does well. We feel a connection with people.” However, Donnelly and Raff wish all the contestants well. The judges are just as invested as them when they connect with the performers. The key to the success of “AGT” is the panel. “Jason and I were talking yesterday about this very thing,” Raff said. “We are so lucky to have this particular group of judges. They’re so easy, so fun, and they absolutely love the show. The key thing is they’re really invested in the contestants; Terry as well. It doesn’t seem like work. When each season starts, it’s like going back to school or having fun with our friends we haven’t been with in a while.” Cowell, she added, calls the audience the fifth judge. They’re encouraged to laugh, cheer and boo the judges. “Seeing it live is a whole different experience than seeing it on TV,” she said. “They’re having fun, and although it’s a really big audience, there’s something intimate about it as well. The audience gets a kick out of seeing the judges and the acts. It’s a very good vibe in there.”
