“I

am a space geek,” reads my T-shirt. True enough. As an Altadenan, I am proud of and love visiting JPL whenever I can. I’ll never forget the day we parked near the Arroyo and gasped in wonder as the space shuttle Endeavour made a surprise, low altitude fly-by over JPL during its final flight. So, of course, I watched with great interest as Richard “The Pink Billionaire” Branson beat Jeff “Lex Luthor” Bezos into space. Now that’s a high-stakes rivalry. As much as some people — understandably so — criticize spending vast sums of money on space exploration, I am all for it. For example, thanks to NASA’s space programs, we got Velcro, the tech that led to today’s smartphones and firefighting suits, just to name a few; there are so many innovations NASA has a department just to catalog them! However, this recent and highly competitive personal space race made me ponder how else we might “game-ify” other adventures while at the same time furthering human progress. Ta-da! Introducing the Altruism Olympics! (Cue the John Williams fanfare.) The current Olympics have events based on ancient Grecian sports that were derived from warfare. Having the best archers, best runners, best swimmers and so on made each faction’s armies stronger. I propose a competition to actually make the world better. In the Altruism Olympics, expect to see:

The shot putter who detonates the most mines wins. This event is exciting because there is strength involved and lots of big blasts — fun for all with the big boom-booms! If bowling ever becomes accepted as an Olympic sport (it has failed yet again), bowlers could join the fun with strikes that blow up. Anyway, you get the gist. Using Bezos and Branson’s space beef as a launching point, what else could we accomplish by pitting other moneyed moguls against each other? Melinda Gates could challenge other billionaire women to philanthropic heights, taking on MacKenzie (Bezos) Scott, who has already donated almost $10 billion for causes that benefit women and girls. Stephen Colbert could compete with other feminist men to reach out and teach knuckle-dragging men to transform their ways into ways of menschiness and unabashed geekiness. Meanwhile, I will wear my space geek tank top with pride and advocate for these new “sports” to show up in the public discourse. Let the games begin!

De-centralization — A shift from selecting one city to host the Summer and Winter Olympics to a system where 24 towns/cities/villages are chosen based on their need for an economic lift. Currently, huge cities consistently go into debt by hosting the Olympics. By selecting sites off the beaten track, tourists expand their travels to new adventures as they observe the games. Heck, getting to the host city might become an event in and of itself.

Marathons with a purpose — Two dozen marathons are held in remote areas where badly needed medicines can only be delivered on foot. Are antibiotics needed in Nepalese villages? The runners will get them there. Instead of one giant marathon in a big city, the field of runners is divided into dozens of separate long-distance races. The race destinations are selected based on need. An additional variation is that each runner carries precious medicine sponsored by corporations so that anti-malarials, HIV/AIDS treatments, safe birth and maternal kits, vaccines and so on reach the people who need them. How inspiring to tune in and see how the money that would have been spent on overpriced stadiums is instead being used to help runners compete for people’s access to life-saving remedies. Martial Artistry — The 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo will feature six martial arts that have divisions for women: boxing, fencing, taekwondo, wrestling, judo and karate. Karate is making its debut as an Olympic sport this year. The Altruism Olympics will build on this by emphasizing female martial arts so that the self-defense lightbulbs can go off in the hearts and minds of the female and femme-identified people who see them. Violence against women is at pandemic levels worldwide, and it’s almost impossible to “unsee” a woman who can hold her own. If a viewer has grown up believing that only men and boys are capable of certain things, attending these events can be life-changing and life-saving. A bigger (shot put) bang — Some countries are tragically impacted by unexploded landmines; children, farmers, livestock and wildlife step on them and either lose limbs or, more often, are killed outright. It’s a huge environmental hazard. Some of these mines are even from the early 20th century. The countries most impacted by mines are Somalia, Mozambique, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kuwait, Cambodia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Angola, Iran and Egypt. The shot putters will compete by looking at a map made by a drone with an infrared camera that locates the mines.

CITY OF HOPE PATIENT BEATS BREAST CANCER SIX TIMES BY ZEN VUONG

P

Stacy Kimmel was just 38 years old when diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time. At City of Hope, she found the compassionate, lifesaving care she was looking for.

City of Hope’s Golter Gate is inscribed with the cancer center’s credo: “There is no profit in curing the body if, in the process, we destroy the soul.”

asadena resident Stacy Kimmel was 38 years old when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. The tumor was 3 millimeters wide, but as a mother of a 3-year-old, Kimmel decided to get aggressive treatment. She underwent a bilateral mastectomy to reduce the risk of recurrence. The estrogen-positive cancer proved stubborn and returned five other times, eventually becoming HER-2 positive, a hard-to-beat cancer mutation that could spread quickly. After negative experiences elsewhere, she felt a pull to move her own care to City of Hope. She was determined to find specialized and compassionate care and, at City of Hope, she found exactly what she was looking for. In total, Kimmel has been diagnosed with breast cancer six times, and she’s beaten it every time. “I can’t stress enough how much the open, honest dialogue I had with my doctors, nurses and care team helped me. In addition to asking about my symptoms, they showed that they cared about me,” Kimmel says. “With a diagnosis like this you either keep fighting or you give up,” said Mike Chen, M.D., Ph.D., one of Kimmel’s physicians at City of Hope. “Stacy is a go-getter, and she has a lot to live for. She’s a fighter.” Kimmel’s cancer was remarkable for how it deviated from almost everything understood about how breast cancer behaves, yet through it all, she remained hopeful. “There’s always hope. If I had what I have now 14 years ago when I was originally diagnosed, I don’t think I would have had as long a life. During those 14 years, research and medical advances created different treatment plans that have afforded me this longer life. The perks of going to City of Hope are that they perform research, manufacture therapies, treat patients and offer clinical trials all on-site,” Kimmel said. Throughout her treatment at City of Hope, Kimmel says she received comprehensive and compassionate care. Now, she recommends City of Hope to friends, stating, “I feel more certain about my choice when I know my doctor is working with a big pool of specialized doctors and supportive care specialists who can help me even when my disease spirals into different iterations that require different treatments.” Now, almost 14 years since she was first diagnosed, Kimmel takes each difficult chapter in stride. She knows, however the next chapter unfolds, there will be an option for her at City of Hope. “What I respond to most is the passion of the physicians and researchers, the people connection here,” Kimmel said. “There is no doubt they’ve saved my life multiple times. “I mean, I’ve had not a second chance, a third chance, a fourth chance, but a fifth chance at life. Who can say that?” For more information, visit CityofHope.org, or call 626-256-HOPE (4673). 07.22.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

Ten Thousand Villages celebrates 15 years with giveaway bash By Jordan Houston Pasadena Weekly Staff Writer

Aion Gym donates $1,000 to Union Station

fter a tumultuous year that left Aion Gym owner Marcus McDuffie scrambling to keep his gym open, he’s helping others. McDuffie recently relaunched his charity of the month program. “We thought our first one getting back should be Union Station Homeless Services,” McDuffie said. “It was very apparent that it needed attention.” With promises of free memberships and gift cards, McDuffie and his clients raised $1,000. The gym also invited Union Station’s staff to give a presentation while clients signed up for volunteer work. “I honestly thought that we would maybe get like $200 or $300,” McDuffie said. “My members, like they always do, blew me out of the water and really surprised me.” Union Station has expanded its services throughout the pandemic, participating in Project Room Key which converted hotels in the Los Angeles area into interim housing. The organization has moved 100 people from the streets or other interim housing situations into these hotel rooms. They continued to provided services during their clients’ stay. Union Station spokesperson Dana Bean said community engagement helps educate residents about homelessness. The funds will go to the organization’s general operating fund. “It really does help us when people make unrestricted gifts or donations to our general operating fund,” Bean said. “It allows us the flexibility to make sure that we are providing the services that are needed. We saw during this past year, more than any other year, that flexibility was critical.” Bean said that over the next three years, the units from Project Room Key will be converted into permanent support housing units as well as affordable housing. “If I’m given these opportunities, I definitely want to be able to use my position to benefit (and) give back to others,” McDuffie said. During his senior year at Occidental College, McDuffie traveled downtown on a Metro bus as part of a class assignment. He was appalled at the disparity of wealth as homeless people slept in tents outside right next to luxury cars. “Within literally two blocks you go from the most expensive and lavish things to people who just want to live, eat and survive,” McDuffie said. That experience stuck with him for the past three years and made him grateful for the blessings that he has throughout his life. “It was honestly eye opening for me,” he said. “It really made me step back and say ‘Wow, I am truly blessed.’” Aion Gym will continue its charity of the month program. While he has yet to choose a charity to support, McDuffie hopes to continue to spread the wealth to his community. Even though he has had a roller coaster of a year, helping his community brings him an unparalleled joy and keeps him strong. “As long as you’re giving, as long you’re reaching out to other people, trying to make other people’s lives better, you will never truly be sad or down,” said McDuffie paraphrasing from the book “The Go-Giver.” “The best way to feel better… to feel like there’s purpose in everything is to give to others.”

fter a year of economic hurdles on the heels of the pandemic, Ten Thousand Villages Pasadena is celebrating 15 years with a giveaway bash to support local businesses. The South Lake store is ringing in its anniversary on July 24 with an outdoor party and 15 giveaways featuring local companies and other fair trade organizations, according to Ten Thousand Villages Pasadena Assistant Manager Hayley Chesshir Bernard. The giveaway participants include Float, Home Brewed Bar, DeMilo Designs, BanSUP Refill, Rose City Coffee, Trader Joes on South Lake, The Tote Project, Malia Fair Trade Designs, Conscious Step, Zaric Fair Trade, True Moringa and the Women’s Bean Project. Vintage Ten Thousand Villages items will also be featured in the drawing, Bernard added. “We’re really looking forward to celebrating our 15th anniversary this year,” Bernard told Pasadena Weekly. “Especially since last year things felt very grim and we weren’t really sure if we would make it through the pandemic. “Thankfully, with the help of donations from our community, and pivoting the way we do business by building a store website so people could shop locally online for store pickup We made it through, and now it’s time to celebrate.” Partygoers can visit the store, located at 567 S. Lake Avenue, anytime between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. to enter the giveaway drawing, as well as mingle with other fair trade supporters on the front patio. Free treats – like chocolate chip cookies and chocolate dipped pretzel rods made by Bernard’s mom, as well as a home chef and caterer – and a photo booth will be available just steps away from the store’s ethically-sourced collection of artisan-crafted home décor, personal accessories and other gift items, Bernard said. The Downtown Women’s Center social enterprise MADE by DWC created a limited-edition candle line for Ten Thousand Villages Pasadena, Bernard said. The item will be sold exclusively at the store. Ten Thousand Villages, identifying as a global maker-to-marker movement, has been pioneering the concept of fair trade since 1946, its website states. It guarantees ethically sourced, handcrafted gifts, home wares and fashion accessories via a network of 50 branded stores, 300-plus retail partners and an e-commerce shop, Bernard explained. “Fair trade proves that greater justice in world trade is possible,” Bernard said. “It highlights the need for change in the rules and practice of conventional trade and shows how a successful business can also put people first.” She continued, “It is a tangible contribution to the fight against poverty, climate change and economic crisis.” Ten Thousand Villages aims to break cycles of generational poverty while connecting 20,000 artisans in 30 developing countries across the world with “conscious shoppers” in the U.S, Bernard said. According to the store’s website, its name was inspired by a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “Because in every village are people who want to live a meaningful life with dignity and who bring beautiful culture worth sharing. Multiply the village idea by ten thousand and it represents the world we’re working to build.” In the global movement, independent certifiers, such as Ten Thousand Villages, work to uphold the economic, social and environmental standards of fair trade by auditing producers, traders and other companies through a certification process. “When you buy something that is fair trade, you can be assured that there was no exploitation and that nobody was harmed in the making of that product,” Bernard previously told Pasadena Weekly. Ten Thousand Villages Pasadena has become a staple within the community as a space to gather for fair trade advocates. Spearheading sustainability and social justice, the South Lake location frequently partners with local mission-driven businesses. Bernard said the store is a loyal participant in the annual Taste of South Lake, as well as a common “pop-up presence at alternative holiday sales around town.” The assistant manager said she is looking forward to celebrating the store’s history and its principles in a COVID-friendly environment with fellow fair trade enthusiasts. “We’re really looking forward to celebrating with people again,” Bernard said. “After a year of no in-person events, it feels really good to have something to celebrate.” To learn more about the anniversary event, contact Bernard at assistant.pasadena@ tenthousandvillages.com or visit www.villagespasadena.com.

Bringing more TV and movie jobs to Pasadena By Jana J. Monji Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

P

rominent TV shows like “Hawkeye,” “Loki” and “Them” as well as movies like the 2021 “Black Widow” and the 2018 “Ant-Man and the Wasp” were filmed in Atlanta, but Georgia isn’t the only state offering attractive tax credits for entertainment productions anymore. State Sen. Anthony J. Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) hopes to lure productions back to California with the State Bill 144 that passed both houses July 15 and is expected to be signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom. The bill includes $330 million in film and TV production tax incentives in the state budget, breaking down into a $180 million increase to the current tax incentive program and $150 million for a new incentive tied to the construction of soundstages. “California’s successful film tax credits have moved dozens of productions back to where they belong and created thousands of good-paying middle-class jobs,” Portantino said. As a young college graduate, Portantino moved to Southern California to be part of the entertainment industry. He also noted that part of this bill is meant to “meet the demands of all of the shows that want to come back to California and the recurring TV that wants to stay in California.” How will that help Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley? Pasadena is home to many people in the entertainment industry. Just last week, Pasadena resident Morgan Neville’s “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” was released to considerable controversy over AI issues. Neville is an Emmy (“Best of Enemies,” 2017) and Academy Award (“Twenty Feet from Stardom,” 2013) winner. Local Renee Tajima-Peña’s five-part documentary series for PBS, “Asian Americans,” received a Peabody Award in June. The award-winning darling of “Minari,” Alan Kim, lives in South Pasadena. But it’s not only actors and directors who live in the area. Portantino said, “A large chunk of the workforce for the entertainment industry resides in Pasadena, the San Gabriel Valley and South Pasadena” and that includes a large production workforce. According to Portantino, the construction of soundstages has not kept pace with the growth in film production, scripted TV and streaming content in California. Portantino worked with the State Building and Construction Trades Council to introduce SB 485 earlier in the year. That effort and continuing budget negotiations led to the successful passage of SB 144. “SB 144 creates a dynamic economic development package for California’s important and historic film and television industry,” Portantino said. “ Investing in soundstage construction and the creation of studios and filming locations is a critical addition to our efforts in increasing filming in the Golden State. By investing in the expansion and modernization of studio infrastructure, we can ensure that another generation of entertainment careers will be created in California.” Portantino noted the life cycle of a studio is about 100 years so building a new soundstage means a century of more jobs for generations of camera people, grips, electricians, writers, costume designers, caterers and makeup artists, producers and actors. “The tradespeople who will build those soundstages live in my district,” Portantino added. SB 144 expands the credit allocation available under the Film and Television Tax Credit 3.0, establishes a new credit for qualified motion pictures produced on a certified studio construction project and increases the credit percentage when specified diversity goals are met. Specifically, the bill increases the aggregate number of credits that may be allocated for 2021-22 and 2022-23 by $15 million, which would be exclusively available to television series that relocate to California. It also increases the aggregate amount of credits that may be allocated for 2021-22 and 2022-23 by $75 million, exclusively available to recurring television series. These amounts are in excess of the $300 million currently allowed. Beginning Jan. 1, 2022, and before Jan. 1, 2032, SB 144 also establishes a new credit in an amount equal to 20% or 25% for qualified expenditures for the production of a qualified motion picture in a certified studio construction project. To receive the credit, a taxpayer would be required to construct or renovate one or more soundstages certified by the California Film Commission. A taxpayer may also be eligible for an additional four percentage points of credit if they meet, or make a good-faith effort to meet, their stated diversity goals for above and below the line workers. SB 144 also will increase diversity within the film and TV production workforce. It requires productions to submit a diversity work plan that includes a statement of the diversity goals for workers that are paid qualified wages, and diversity goals for individuals whose wages are excluded from qualified wages. The diversity goals are required to be broadly reflective of California’s population, in terms of race and gender. SB 144 is part of a three-party budget agreement between the governor, the State Senate and the State Assembly. The measure is co-authored by Assemblymember Autumn Burke (D-Marina del Rey) Chair of the Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee, and Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D-Los Angeles).

Judge dismisses tournament’s lawsuit against the city federal judge wholly dismissed the Tournament of Roses lawsuit filed against the city of Pasadena, on Monday, July 12, following a dispute of the naming rights of the iconic Rose Bowl Game after it was moved from Pasadena for the first time since World War II. “The court agrees with defendant (the City) that plaintiff (tournament) cannot reasonably dispute that, separate and apart from intellectual property ownership, the heart and soul of the Rose Bowl Game belongs to the people of Pasadena,” said U.S. District Court Judge Andre Birotte. In his ruling, Birotte dismissed all counts of the tournament’s lawsuit with prejudice. When a case is dismissed with prejudice, it bars the plaintiff from filing another lawsuit based on the same grounds. The counts ranged from false advertising, copyright infringement and a breach of contract. The lawsuit stems from a feud late last year when the Tournament of Roses believed it had the authority to move the Rose Bowl game due to a major, unforeseen event like the COVID-19 pandemic that struck the world last year. In legal terms, this is called a force majeure clause which is present in master license agreement for the Rose Bowl. As state COVID-19 restrictions barred fans at the game and while the region was ravaged by the virus, the tournament believed it had just cause to declare a force majeure. While the city disagreed with the claim of a force majeure, the tournament moved the game to Arlington, Texas, for the first time since 1942, a few weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Tournament officials repeatedly said that the organization had no plans to move the game. “I’ve said it multiple times, we have no plans or desire to ever move this game again,” said David Eads, executive director and CEO of the Tournament of Roses in February. “Pasadena is our home. We’re based in Pasadena. This game has been played here for 105 out of 107 years.” The dispute was settled on Dec. 29 when the tournament signed a $2 million payout which would be paid over three years. However, in February the tournament filed this lawsuit catching the city by surprise. The city rejoiced when it heard the ruling, calling the suit “frivolous” and proves that the claims put forth by the tournament were “ill-conceived” and “full of egregious assertions.” “This lawsuit should have never been filed in the first place,” said Mayor Victor Gordo in a statement. “The city of Pasadena has been a tremendous partner to the tournament, and it is appalling that the tournament took such a significant step over nothing. We are pleased that the judge wasted little time in dismissing the claims made entirely.” However, Eads and tournament officials believed the suit achieved its main goals, confirming the tournament’s trademark rights and preserving the tournament’s force majeure rights. “We believe the suit achieved its most important purposes,” said Eads in a statement. “Our ownership of the Rose Bowl trademarks has been confirmed, and we retain the ability to enforce our rights under the ‘force majeure’ provision if necessary.” During the proceedings, the city conceded that the trademark rights for the Rose Bowl Game belonged to the tournament. While the Birotte dismissed the count, the tournament noted that the judge dismissed the claim because it was contingent on future events which may not occur. In turn, the tournament believes that it retains the force majeure rights. “The court noted that with no current plans to move the game, there was no reason to rule on the disagreement now,” said tournament officials in a statement. The city said it will now seek for the tournament to pay for the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent defending against the suit. “The city of Pasadena will now seek to recover the taxpayer dollars the city was forced to needlessly, albeit successfully, spend on defending itself in this litigation,” said city officials in a statement. While this ordeal may have soured the century-long relationship between the city and the tournament, both sides seem ready to put this feud behind them. “Despite all of the legal wrangling, it is my sincere hope that now we can collectively return our focus to New Year’s Day, with an iconic parade and a game that puts Pasadena in the world’s spotlight once again,” Gordo said. “The Rose Bowl Game has been forced out of Pasadena only twice in its long history, and we hope that never happens again,” Eads added. “While it is important that we retain the ability to respond swiftly to emergencies, Pasadena is our home and we expect it to be the home of the Rose Bowl Game for many, many years to come.”

asey Kennerson grew up in the bead and design business. As a baby, she traveled around with her mom while she sold jewelry. Kennerson is continuing the family business by hosting the Pasadena Bead & Design Show, which returns Friday, July 23, to Sunday, July 25, at the Hilton Pasadena ballrooms. “A lot of big trade shows are not designed for the artist,” she said. “Being on the other side of the tables, we knew what we wanted.” The Pasadena Bead & Design Show has been a staple in the community, especially with gallery owners, designers, crafters and all those who appreciate handcraft. This first in-person show will bring back show favorites, as well as new exhibitors and emerging artisans. Additions to the show include a series of mini workshops, as well as many new, comprehensive workshops. Showgoers can try their hand at mixed media and jewelry-making techniques and skills such as wire work, collage, art clay fusion jewelry and chainmaille. Traditional and contemporary bead artists, handcrafters and tradespeople are showcasing products inspired not only by the handmade movement of today, but those of the late 19th century such as the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau. Products are carefully created, with meticulous detail, natural materials and brilliant colors. The selections range from hand-printed fabrics, hand-sewn clothing, handcrafted beads and jewelry to antique beads, ancient finds and vintage clothing. “Our show is different in that we have everything — from the finished pieces to make your own,” she said. “We have make-your-own jewelry with the beads and the components. We have finished jewelry and textiles and things to make your own clothing and fibers.” Kennerson stays passionate about her occupation thanks to the artists’ enthusiasm. “I love the passion I see in the artists when they create pieces,” she said. “To be involved in that community where people love art and jewelry is amazing. “That’s what keeps me excited about it. I’m always seeing something new and beautiful. We all need beauty in our lives—especially with 18 months of not being able to see that.”

efore visiting the Italian sandwich shop Hey That’s Amore, it might pay to review Francis Ford Coppola’s classic film, “The Godfather.” Many of the elaborately constructed sandwiches are named for the film’s characters, and the small dining room’s walls are covered with framed posters of the movie, along with other mob-related features like Scorcese’s “Goodfellas” and De Palma’s “Scarface.” No, the Soprano family entourage is not clustered at a back table playing cards here. “Actually, I loved the movies (especially) ‘The Godfather,’” said Asieh Baghdaserians, the owner and chef at Hey That’s Amore. “My son (Patrick Baghdaserians) chose the names on my menu, so he helped me and did the decorations with all the (posters) from ‘The Godfather.’” Indeed, Patrick also devised most of the sandwich recipes. “For the names, I drew upon my interests in film, music and sports,” said Patrick, who maintains a successful family law practice in Pasadena. Asieh lives in nearby Montrose with her husband, Art. Their daughter, Elmida, is a college professor. The family emigrated from Tehran to Southern California in 1984. Art can be found at the store most days holding court by the front window of the dining room. Patrick describes his father as an “integral” part of the experience at Hey That’s Amore. Don’t be shy. Engage Art while awaiting a sandwich order. “He’s the mascot. He’s an interesting character. He can chat about everything from World

Cup soccer to international politics. He speaks six languages,” Patrick said. Asieh and Art are also no strangers to Italian cuisine. The Baghdaserianses operated a pizzeria in La Crescenta for 13 years before discovering the storefront on Holly Street in 2006. They bought it from the original owners, who had struggled to maintain the small coffee shop on the site, with the same name. “When I opened here, there was no Subway. Nothing,” Asieh said. Hey That’s Amore shut down cold on March 14, 2020, as the state-wide pandemic lockdown was declared. “I don’t want to stay home. I love my shop. One year is boring, (when) I stayed home. But then I come here. I love to come to the shop,” Asieh said. Asieh and Art didn’t return to open the shop until early April of this year, with limited hours. Now open 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, Hey That’s Amore reemerged into a new postpandemic neighborhood that is stacked with formidable competition, for the shop’s old lunch-time regulars. Many of those regulars were nearby office workers and many of them are still working from home. “They’re from Kaiser (Permanente) and Parsons. They were working from home, so fewer people were coming, not too much. I hope they come back. One by one, they’re coming. They’re happy that I’m open,” Asieh said. “All of my customers are like family to me. They are very nice people. Some customers are very nice. They respect me because I’m old.” Among one group of loyalists she’s known as “the hottest big mama.” The 33 elaborately crafted sandwich choices are displayed above the counter on two large panels. They’re grouped under thematic headings. “Wonders of the World” features five options, with the most notable being the former greatest sandwich in the world ($12.99), stuffed with salami, prosciutto, soppressata, sun-dried tomatoes, provolone, lettuce and fresh tomatoes. Right below it is the greatest sandwich in the world ($12.99), with meatballs wrapped in salami and soppressata, red onions, pepperoncini and provolone. When asked about the relationship between the two sandwiches, Asieh was vague. “I don’t know. When we made it, it was good, so we put this name on it,” she said, referring to the greatest. She clearly has a favorite, though. “I like the former,” she said definitively. Patrick revealed that, in a brainstorming session, a childhood friend suggested the successive name scheme. The cast of characters from “The Godfather” appear in the next section of the menu, under the title “An Offer You Can’t Refuse.” The Don Corleone ($10.99) features salami and prosciutto with sun-dried tomatoes and provolone, dressed in mayonnaise and mustard. The Michael Corleone ($10.99) swaps in soppressata for the prosciutto and adds lettuce. The Hyman Roth ($9.99) has pastrami and pickles, while the Tom Hagen ($9.99) sports roast beef as the protein. There are three sandwiches in the section labeled Vampire Repellent, all of which employ garlic pesto, including the Fat Anthony ($11.99). House sandwich designer Patrick notes it represents one of his more original creations. It combines turkey with soppressata and the garlic pesto plus jalapenos, provolone, lettuce and tomatoes. Patrick also points to another creative sandwich which is the Danny DeVito ($10.99). Listed in the section named With Friends Like These, this sandwich boasts a stratum of meatballs and sausage laced with jalapenos, onions and provolone covered in mayonnaise and mustard. This section also has the Shavo Odadjian” ($12.99) and the John Dolmayan ($10.99), respectively named after the bass player and drummer of the band System of a Down. They’re also personal friends of Patrick’s and fans of the sandwich shop. The traditional meatball sub, Danny Leonetti ($9.99), is named after a partner in Patrick’s law firm. Leonetti was also a fraternity brother of Patrick’s during their undergraduate years at Loyola Marymount University. For Saturday brunch, post-pandemic wait times routinely exceed an hour at nearby venues like The Pan and Russell’s. Instead of a restless wait on an unshaded sidewalk, pop into Hey That’s Amore and try The Goodfella ($9.99), with scrambled eggs, Italian sausage, provolone, tomatoes and onion. Asieh will prep the sandwich in minutes, while Art expounds and the cool, quiet dining room provides a welcome refuge from the ravenous weekend brunch throngs roving Old Town. By the way, the sandwich rolls at Hey That’s Amore are produced by the wholesale bakery Bread Los Angeles in Montebello, using the family’s custom proprietary dough recipe. The freshly baked rolls are an undeniably critical and irresistible element in each sandwich’s success here. “It’s the essence of the American Dream,” said Patrick, describing his immigrant parents’ journey and the complex set of pivots that allowed them to raise a thriving family. “We want to be an integral part of the community.” Finally, Asieh’s face brightened as she said, “I want everybody to be healthy and happy to come back to work. Let’s go back to normal life. I love Pasadena. It looks like Europe.”

Poblano: A tale of two taquerias By Frier McCollister Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

T

he modest and tiny taqueria Poblano opened for business early this year in a storefront on North Lake Avenue, just south of Washington Boulevard. Sylvia Biviano-Palacios and her husband, Jose Ibanez-Sanchez — natives of Puebla, Mexico — have had the space since 2016, where initially they used the small dining room and kitchen area to prep fruit and provide storage for their two fruit carts. One cart is parked outside of the store. The other is manned by Ibanez-Sanchez and regularly stationed at the foot of the Rose Bowl’s main entrance, along the popular 5K loop for joggers and bikers, skirting the stadium and Brookside golf course. At first, Biviano-Palacios activated the kitchen on North Lake, under the banner “Café Ollas” serving a small menu of tacos, smoothies, coffee and fruit with the second fruit cart parked outside. “I only have permission for one cart (for street concession). I put the cart outside so the customers can see I sell fruit here, inside the store,” she explained. Then, in 2018, local artist and chef Greg Lukasiewicz approached the couple. They were interested in renting out the double storefront and Lukasiewicz had a plan. An experienced restaurateur, Lukasiewicz operated Restaurant Halie and Fish Mama in Pasadena over a decade ago. More recently, he was the mastermind behind San Diego’s Bull Tacos, a mini-chain favorite of local surfers. Lukasiewicz’s new model for Maquina focused on gourmet, artisanal tacos with a sliding pricing scale. In May 2018, Maquina Taco supplanted Café Ollas with an equally lean operation. Lukasiewicz manned the stoves while his affable father, Richard, took orders and ran the cash register. With its extensive list of exotic taco fillings — written in marker on a whiteboard — stuffed into fresh blue corn tortillas from Kernel of Truth Organics tortilleria in Boyle Heights, Maquina’s opening upended the notion of what a neighborhood taqueria could do. The whiteboard’s list includes duck, wild boat, pheasant, lamb and mint, grilled octopus, lobster and chapulines (grasshoppers). Offered as tacos or in burritos or bowls, the menu topped out with a grilled ribeye and lobster, street-style taco priced at $12 or in a burrito for $24. A small bar of housemade salsas was positioned next to the cash register. The dining room sat perhaps 10 diners on simple, painted plywood benches, before the adjoining storefront opened to accommodate more tables, in the wake of the critical praise that ensued. Soon enough, the lunchtime line to order routinely stretched onto the sidewalk. The adjoining dining room buzzed with activity, decorated with a baby grand piano and audio speakers tuned to jazz radio. Maquina transformed the humble storefront on North Lake into a hot destination. When the pandemic descended last March, there seemed to be two categories of restaurateurs: those who dug in for a series of hard pivots, determined to survive; and those who simply disappeared. Unfortunately for local taco enthusiasts and most unfortunately for Jose and Sylvia, Maquina Taco and Greg Lukasiewicz apparently fell into the second category. The Maquina website is down and the Google listing for Maquina Taco still cites it as being “temporarily closed”. Likewise, on the Maquina Instagram account, a post, dated May 18, 2020, stated, “We are temporarily closed. Reopening updates to be posted on IG.” The last post on the account is dated Oct. 17, 2020, with a picture of a taco, soliciting catering inquiries. “They just left, because of the pandemic,” Biviano-Palacios stated. She knew of no plans for Maquina’s return nor did she have any contact information for it. “They still owed us for rent and gas and utilities,” she added. At the Rose Bowl, standing by his fruit cart, Ibanez-Sanchez sighed in resignation at the mention of Maquina. “Dio esta grande,” he said with a wan smile. “God is great.” He went on to explain that he had agreed to the arrangement with Lukasiewicz for Maquina’s occupancy but had no written contract. In a subsequent conversation, Ibanez-Sanchez confirmed Biviano-Palacios’ assertions regarding Maquina and Lukasiewicz’s departure. Citing an unpaid electricity bill of $4,000, rent of $9,000 and a gas bill of $1,000, CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

he doesn’t expect a reopening of Maquina at his storefront on North Lake anytime soon. Maquina and Greg Lukasiewicz did not respond to numerous requests for comment. At Poblano, tacos are still available, though in a more traditional manner. Served on larger 6-inch tortillas, fillings include: carne asada, pork carnitas, chicken, fish and shrimp. The latter two are served “Estilo Rosarito” or Rosarito-style, referring to the resort town on the Baja California coast, where Biviano-Palacios and Ibanez-Sanchez lived before coming to Pasadena. The fish and shrimp are breaded, fried and topped with lettuce, pico de gallo and crema. Tacos are $3, while burritos are $10. Handmade tamales, wrapped in plantain leaves are also $3 as is a cup of fresh corn elote, dressed in mayo, butter, cotija cheese, lime juice and Tajin chili-lime seasoning. Biviano-Palacios has recently added a rich, chicken mole plate and her personal favorite, pork short rib adobo, both priced at $12. Fresh fruit smoothies are $5 and a fruit “bionico” salad is $6. The traditional fruit cup that Ibanez-Sanchez prepares at the Rose Bowl is also available at Poblano, in a large cup at $6 or tray at $8. Described by Ibanez-Sanchez as “Estilo Mexico” or Mexican-style, his fruit cup includes diced watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber and pico de gallo with lime juice. The requisite traditional addition of chili-lime Tajin seasoning and a generous dash or two of chamoy salsa creates a uniquely sweet, sour and savory blend of flavor and texture. It’s a perfectly refreshing reward after a brisk power walk around the Rose Bowl loop. A Maquina taco was a glittering novelty. At Poblano, its soul food, plain and simple. An honest, humble integrity has prevailed with Biviano-Palacios and Ibanez-Sanchez’s cooking here. Gentrification in reverse. There’s no Poblano website and no Instagram account, but Biviano-Palacios is in the kitchen and Ibanez-Sanchez’s cart is not going anywhere. Standing at the door of the small, now storied storefront, Biviano-Palacios smiled optimistically. “We’re getting along. We don’t have a lot of publicity but they’re recognizing us little by little.” Luis Chavez contributed to this story.

erry Donahue, the winningest coach in UCLA and Pacific 12 conference history, died July 4 in his home in Newport Beach, after a two-year battle with cancer. In his 20-year career as head coach of the blue and gold, Donahue constantly outmatched his peers, beating Pac-12 teams 98 times and with 151 total wins with the Bruins, he more than doubles any other coach’s record. “There aren’t enough words to properly honor Terry Donahue and what he means to the Bruin family and anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing him,” said current UCLA head football coach Chip Kelly. “He epitomizes everything you strive to be as a coach and as a human being. Since the moment I stepped on campus, he’s been an incredible mentor and one of the most authentic, humble and toughest men I’ve ever met. He loved UCLA with all he had, and I can’t express how important his guidance and friendship has been for me. He is an irreplaceable representation of the Bruin way. “We will always love and play for TD. Our deepest condolences to Andrea, the Donahue family and everyone lucky enough to know him.” His career at UCLA began as an undersized defensive tackle struggling to get playing time. However, in his final two years, Donahue got his chance of becoming the first-string defensive tackle and starting 21 consecutive games. He was on the 1966 UCLA football team, who upset the top-ranked Michigan State for the school’s first Rose Bowl win. He began his college coaching career as an unpaid assistant for Pepper Rodgers at Kansas. He eventually followed Rodgers to UCLA as an offensive line coach in 1971 and stayed when Dick Vermeil replaced Rodgers three years later. At 31, Donahue took the reins of the football program after Vermeil left for the head coaching spot for the Philadelphia Eagles. In his tenure, UCLA went 151-74-8, winning or sharing five league titles. Donahue led his teams to constant post-season success becoming the first coach to win seven straight bowl games, winning three Rose Bowl games in 1983, 1984 and 1986. UCLA also won the 1985 Fiesta Bowl, 1986 Freedom Bowl, 1987 Aloha Bowl and 1989 Cotton Bowl. He was also the first to appear in the Rose Bowl as a player, assistant coach and head coach. In 1996 he retired from UCLA’s football team and moved to the press box, calling games for CBS, Fox and the NFL Network. He transitioned to professional football, serving as the 49ers’ director of player personnel from 1999-2000 and as the general manager from 2001-2005. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000. He joined the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1997 and the press box at the Rose Bowl was renamed the Terry Donahue Pavilion in 2013. Donahue was born in the city of angels on June 24, 1944. He grew up as one of five brothers in North Hollywood and played football at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Andrea, his three daughters: Nicole, Michele and Jennifer; along with his three sons-in-law and 10 grandchildren.

T

ed Nugent was a rock star to David Haerle, but, he said, Eddie Van Halen “performed miracles on six strings.” After Van Halen’s death, many musicians and fans mourned. Haerle, a singer, songwriter and guitarist, turned it into a song called “Eddie.” “I realized I wanted to write in a song, from the perspective of a young boy, what it meant to me,” said Haerle, who lives in Los Feliz. “That’s what I hope to convey in this song. As an artist, you want to try to say things in a way people will connect with them. I hope I did that.” “Eddie” is available to stream/buy on all digital platforms and the music video can be viewed on YouTube. “He was a total game changer,” Haerle said. “It leveled the guitar world. He turned the guitar world on its head. I loved the whole band, the songs and the musicality.” “Eddie” is the latest release in a series of other heartfelt and personal tracks from Haerle, including “Train Down Memory Lane,” “No More We” and “True Liberty.” His May 2020 sophomore album “Death Valley” was praised by acclaimed music magazines.

A new love Haerle said he was 11 years old when he heard “Runnin’ with the Devil” while driving with his dad near their Los Angeles home. The song spoke to him. “The song starts off with the backward blare of car horns and a thumping bass line,” he said. “It’s followed by the sound of Eddie Van Halen’s guitar and the drums kicking in. Then comes that distinctive lead vocal and their trademark harmony singing. It was like a bomb went off in the rock world that February 1978. Especially for guitar players. I started playing myself not long after that on a Fender Stratocaster and amplifier gifted to me by my parents.” Haerle was a fan of the entire band, though, for its “incredible new sound.” “Looking back on those younger years, it felt different,” he said. “There was a lot of seriousness in guitar playing, with Eddie jumping around the stage with a big grin. I loved the attitude and feeling he conveyed.” He attended multiple Van Halen concerts, but after the 1980s-era show, he felt down. “I felt, hmmm, ‘depressed’ is too strong,” he recalled. “I felt down because the show was so great. I was feeling so great. I was already playing the guitar at that point. I thought, ‘Who can go anywhere from here?’ I remember like it was yesterday.” Musical family Haerle isn’t the only music fan in his family. Born in Germany, his father had an encyclopedic knowledge of country music, which he garnered by listening to Armed Forces Radio Network. “He started a record label (CMH Label Group) in 1975,” Haerle said. “Music was the business of my family, especially my father. I rejected country and bluegrass for a while. Very early on, when I first heard ‘Fame’ by David Bowie, that was a pivotal moment. When I heard Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix, that planted a seed that I wanted to do this.” He left school in the 11th grade and earned his GED. He floundered for a couple years and played in alt-rock bands. Haerle landed a job at the International Creative Management (ICM) mail room. At ICM, he met “the woman I would be married to for many years.” When Haerle was 24, his father died unexpectedly. For a few weeks, he pondered whether or not he wanted to continue CMH Label Group. “For the next 20 years, much of my energy went to CMH Label Group,” he said. “At the 20-year mark, a shift started to happen to me. I’m a late bloomer. I was in conversation with a particular person in my life. I said I’d like to take singing lessons. I had sung in my life. “The next thing I knew, my life changed like I had never expected. It led to wanting to

Haerle is planning to release his third collection later this year or early in 2022. “I owe a lot to my colleagues and the support I have at this company,” he said. “It could not have been possible without them. I give credit where credit is due.” He returns to Bowie, saying that was his first experience with a loss of a favorite artist. “David Bowie was the biggest one that had happened in my life,” Haerle said. “He’s been a big idol and influence for me. I remember cutting out his obit from the physical paper and tucked it away in a special place. “I heard the news about Eddie online. It really hit me — as it did so many people — hard. I knew what would happen. I saw it on the front page, and I just burst into tears. I knew I would. It felt good to cry. Yes, you changed my life, Mr. Eddie Van Halen. I read the obit and tucked it away with David Bowie.”

By Bliss Bowen Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

LEDISI, Ledisi Sings Nina (BMG): HHH½ Tackling Nina Simone’s oeuvre is a formidable prospect, and Ledisi brings a respectful balance of humility and passion to this seven-track tribute to the outspoken jazz icon. The Grammy-winning vocalist doesn’t radically reinterpret classics such as “Feeling Good,” “My Baby Just Cares for Me” and the swinging “Work Song,” but Jochen Neufer’s punchy arrangements for Metropole Orkest magnify the impact of her dynamic readings. Highlights include a live, guitar-centered version of “Wild Is the Wind” (from Ledisi’s Simone tribute for PBS last December) and a magnetic performance of “Four Women” with Lisa Fisher, Alice Smith and Lizz Wright. Ledisi’s in concert with LA Philharmonic at Hollywood Bowl July 24. Ledisi.com JON BYRD, Me & Paul (self-released):HHH½ Listening to how this veteran Nashville songwriter and guitarist unspools melodic tales such as the bruised beauty “I’ll Be Her Only One” (co-written with Kevin Gordon) and “Why Must You Think of Leaving?” (co-written with Shannon Wright) is akin to the savory pleasures offered by a novel or a favorite neighborhood bard when the hour’s late and whiskey’s flowing. A natural storyteller, Byrd has a homing instinct for emotional truth, even when inhabiting the lines of J.J. Cale (a haunting “Don’t Go to Strangers”) and the Louvin Brothers (an effectively understated “Cash on the Barrelhead”). Paul Niehaus supplies graceful accompaniment, his pedal steel complementing Byrd’s plainspoken delivery without glossing over its essential grit. jonbyrd.com JUNACO, Blue Room (Side Hustle): HH½ “Is paradise a place or a state of mind?” That’s the question posed by this promising L.A.-based duo’s balmy single “Paradise,” which seems tailor-made for some future soundtrack. The chill dreaminess conjured with electric guitars, keyboard and percussion by frontwoman Shahana Jaffer and guitarist/drummer Joey LaRosa throughout this eight-track album soothes more than stimulates. There’s tension between Jaffer’s angelic tones and the pensive concerns of “Blue Room,” “Living Out of Mind” and “Weight of the World,” but any drama, like their hooks, is subtle. junacomusic.com LES FILLES DE ILLIGHADAD, At Pioneer Works (Sahel Sounds):HHHH Uniting the female-centric tende tradition of chants and calland-response with the droning electric guitars that have defined Tuareg music in recent decades, the Niger quartet expands the form by restoring women to their central place. At the heart of this concert set, recorded in 2019 in New York, is the 11-minute “Telilit,” resurrected from a desert recording lead vocalist/ guitarist Fatou Seidi Ghali and vocalist/percussionist Alamnou Akrouni made after forming the band in 2016. Since joined by Agadez guitarist Amaria Hamadalher and Ghali’s cousin Abdoulaye Madassane (the lone male, who also plays rhythm guitar with Mdou Moctar), their celebratory guitars, handclaps, tende drum and voices exalting community are hard to resist. Highlights: “Chakalan,” a spirited take on Etran Finatawa’s “Surbajo.” lesfillesdeillighadad.bandcamp.com

WILBURT LEE RELIFORD, Seems Like a Dream (Big Legal Mess): HHHH Mississippi hill country blues is known for raw guitars and droning grooves, but in these 12 rarely heard tracks, there’s also joy, thanks to Reliford, a blind harmonica player who grew up near Junior Kimbrough’s Chulahoma juke joint and died in 1993. Reliford was recorded in 1989 by a Dutch folklorist during a field trip (which eventually yielded a “Rural Blues” documentary), but half of his rediscovered solo performances feature newly added support from guitarist Will Sexton and a crack band that manages to sound organic as Reliford’s expressive “wah” tones and hopeful, earthy vocals nod to Sonny Boy Williamson. Rewarding as it is to hear them frolic and strut through “Tappin’ That Thing” and “I Won’t Be Back No More” behind the wailing harp, it’s Reliford’s solo turns that haunt. Highlights: “Sugar Mama,” “I’m Gonna Leave.” biglegalmessrecords.com LAURA MVULA, Pink Noise (Flamingo/Atlantic UK):HHH The British R&B artist unexpectedly swerves into the ’80s with her third album, a sleek vehicle driven by synthesizers, metallic drumbeats and pop hooks. In retrospect, “Phenomenal Woman” and the Nile Rodgers-supported “Overcome” from her Ivor Novello Award-winning 2016 album “The Dreaming Room” can be heard as precursors to the choral swells of “Magical,” the addictive jam “Got Me,” “Church Girl” and the funky “Remedy,” composed during the 2020 lockdown amid Black Lives Matter protests (“How many more must die before the remedy?/ Can you hear all my people cry for the remedy?”). It’s far removed from the jazzy sophistication of 2013’s “Sing to the Moon,” confirming Mvula’s eclectic taste and range. planetmvula.com MIKE ZITO, Resurrection (Gulf Coast): HHH The Texas guitarist won Blues Rock Artist and Blues Rock Album (for “Rock ‘n’ Roll: A Tribute to Chuck Berry”) honors at last month’s Blues Music Awards, but leans into rock with his newest release. Reteamed with producer David Z, he slams social media’s negative energy with “Don’t Bring Me Down”; transforms Willie Dixon’s “Evil” into an ominous groover bound to elicit cheers at shows; and lightheartedly skewers politicians with “Running Man.” But Zito, who exchanges J.J. Cale’s sly wit for sincerity and beefy solos during “I’ll Make Love to You,” is less concerned with topicality than betting everything on the title track’s inspiration: love and second chances. mikezito.com WELCOME CENTER, Talk Talk Talk (self-released): HH½ “Talk, talk, talk, and I listen/ Nation lost in your vision now/ … Southern curse I cannot handle/ Sunday service, light a candle, watch it burn out.” Inspired by 2020’s turmoil, the slow-building “Burn” gives this modest electronic-pop EP its title and focus. The melodic vista expands, War on Drugs-style, as Jesse Smith’s electric guitar fills evoke memories and roadtrips (perhaps explaining its 6:24 run time). “Parasite City” and “Losers,” meanwhile, thrum with Aaron Sternick’s incongruously upbeat synthesizers. The EP’s more nuanced than 2020’s “This House Will Be Filled With ____”; “Burn” represents a still more interesting step forward. welcomecenterband.com
