“T

he only people who get upset when you set boundaries are the ones who benefitted from you not having any.” — Anonymous. To that quote I add: “For most of history, ‘Anonymous’ was a woman.” — Virginia Woolf. Women setting boundaries is a vital conversation we all must have regardless of national or gender identity. And not anonymously either. The recent events surrounding Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles reminded me of a self-defense class I once taught for teen girls, sponsored by 50-50 Leadership and the late Jaylene Mosley. It was held in late summer, inside a carpeted classroom and had 30 participants. I began with an individual exercise of having each student yell “No!” However, when I got to the third young woman, she said, “I don’t want to.” As the teacher, I froze momentarily while thinking, “How dare she? This is not how the class is supposed to go!” But then, because of my decades of experience being an instructor with IMPACT Personal Safety, it became a teachable moment. I addressed the room, asking, “Is ‘I don’t want to’ an acceptable reason to decline to do something? Anyone, just shout out your answer.” Almost everyone chimed in with various forms of “no.” I continued. “Would forcing her to yell ‘no’ be a good idea?” Crickets. I could feel the students thinking. I finished with, “Just think of the hell that would break loose if a critical mass of women and girls had the freedom to say, ‘No, I don’t want to’ when they really didn’t want to.” If you have people in your life that argue with you when you set a boundary or only respect boundaries they agree with, look again. Are they really on your team? Maybe not. The young woman who declined got more engaged and left the class having been validated. What my basic boundaries student did was radical and provided a vivid lesson in boundary-setting within a boundary-setting class. Had I shamed, cajoled or sweet-talked her into yelling “No!” anyway, I would have been the worst kind of hypocrite. We’ve seen stellar boundaries set in the past weeks. Tennis titleholder Naomi Osaka and genius gymnast Simone Biles are Olympic-level boundary setters who have repeatedly put everything they have on the line, while also making themselves ultra-visible. They are women of excellence who also happen to be women of color. Osaka and Biles are revolutionary and the answer to my dreams of women being their own advocates. The taboo against women of any color setting boundaries runs deep. One does not say “no” within the entrenched white patriarchal codes we’ve all grown up with unless the no-sayer has clanging ovaries of brass and profound convictions. Oh, wait, what’s that sound? It’s the jangle of baby brass ovaries growing all over the world. If you know me or have read me for any length of time, you know my mission and passion in life is to revive the boundary-setting capacities of females of every type. I believe with all my heart that women and girls are a crucial component in having the world work for everyone with no one and nothing left out. Meanwhile, my siblings in Empowerment Self-Defense — ESD Global and IMPACT Personal Safety — are busy around the world doing the same thing. Have you considered why a primary “female” social virtue is being compliant and nice? Do you think that women are born to be exploited? Do you believe that women are inherently weak or that acquiescence is in the X chromosome? To take a stand is to risk being thought of as “uppity” and unattractive. Unattractive to whom? As in any problems that seem intractable, the maxim “follow the money” is spot-on. Professional sports involve big money at all levels. In the case of Biles, withdrawing from competition caused a significant fi-

nancial hit to NBC, Visa and other sponsors who were exploiting Simone without her participation. This “limits” problem is also thorny for whichever group of people is non-dominant. For example, the overwhelming numbers of Black participants in football and boxing who risk brain damage and other life-threatening injuries at rates much higher than whites. This happens because, generally speaking, white players do not see such violent sports as tickets out of poverty. At this stage in their careers, Ms. Osaka and Ms. Biles do not owe anyone an explanation. My fervent hope is that parents use them as object lessons for their children in standing up for themselves. Mommy says, “See, honey? Naomi and Simone can’t be emotionally or financially bought, isn’t that inspiring?” Daddy says, “If anyone tries to bribe you or shame you into taking actions you don’t want to take, think of Simone and Naomi.” That is the feminism I have longed for. I’ll close with one of my favorite Rebecca West quotes: “I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat or a prostitute.” Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! Union Station receives 40 Chromebooks from partners By Claire Spinner Pasadena Weekly Staff Writer

uring the pandemic, the world went online. In a matter of days, the internet became the only source of connectivity. But for those who had little-to-no access to technology like cellphones and laptops, the digital divide became clearer. Union Station Homeless Services, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending homelessness in San Gabriel Valley, is hoping to ease that divide, through the donation of 40 Chromebooks funded by Glen and Natalie Kraemer, Hirschfeld Kraemer LLP and Xantrion, an IT support service company. The Chromebooks were donated to members of Union Station’s Lived Expertise Advisory Panel (LEAP), advocates who are or were homeless. LEAP was formed to understand the needs of unhoused people in Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley. Shawn Morrissey, senior director of advocacy and community engagement for Union Station, said the panel is crucial. “LEAP arose out of effort to lift up the voices of people with lived experience. No one knows better what the needs are for someone who is unhoused than someone who lived or is living that same experience,” Morrissey said. Formerly homeless, Morrissey said he is aware of the devastation of the digital divide. It’s easy to feel isolated as a homeless person. “Homelessness: We talk about it being a trauma,” Morrissey said. “Part of that trauma is this kind of exquisite disconnect that you have from your community and the people around you. It’s this interesting incongruent contrast — what it looks like to exist as an unhoused person right next to the thrum and abundance of the world happening just a few feet away from you. With the type of connectivity most people have, it’s even more apparent how disconnected you are.” It was the pandemic, Morrissey said, that amplified the issues caused by lack of access to internet-connected devices. “The problem was really brought to the floor when the pandemic hit. LEAP, for example, regularly met in-person, and that changed overnight. What we found was that a lot of our members didn’t have easy access to attend meetings virtually,” Morrissey said. After talking over the issue with one of Union Station’s interns, the son of Natalie and Glen Kraemer, Morrissey connected with Hirschfeld Kraemer LLP, a long-time client of Xantrion. Xantrion president Anne Bisagno said she felt her company should be part of the solution to Union Station’s problem, as it’s ingrained in the company’s mission. “We are a longstanding support provider for Glen Kraemer and Hirschfeld Kraemer LLP, and he and his son had been very active in working with Union Station,” Bisagno said. “We’ve helped a lot of causes that Glen has supported over the years. When he put forward the idea of providing Chromebooks, we were all over it. A huge part of our company culture is supporting our employees and the communities we live in.” Bisagno said she and her Xantrion staff have empathy for those that are unable to access information and internet technology. “This really goes to the heart of what we believe in and what we are involved in, which is information technology,” she said. “We know how critical it has become for everyone these days, especially people like the folks at Union Station, who are trying to rebuild their lives. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to be able to help this group of people minimize that digital divide, because it is just so significant in this country, and we see that. This is one small way we can help.” Morrissey said donating the Chromebooks to LEAP members will improve the connectivity within and outside of the team. That includes case managers and housing recruiters. “The ability to provide devices and connectivity to people just levels the playing

David Sensente, senior manager, in-kind donations Union Station Homeless Services, receives Chromebooks, donated by Glen and Natalie Kraemer, Hirschfeld Kraemer LLP and Xantrion. field a bit and gives them access to something we may have taken for granted for years,” Morrissey said. “We were extremely lucky to have been gifted the Chromebooks, because without this kind of technology, even something as simple as making a doctor’s appointment can be nearly impossible.” Morrissey and his advocacy team are hoping to find ways to provide even more Chromebooks to Union Station’s clients who are in need. “I would love to see us expand this,” Morrissey said. “We started off with 40 Chromebooks and I would love to see us try to expand this so we can get this kind of connectivity into the hands of everybody who needs it. To get everybody connected is a huge goal of ours.” At Union Station, Morrissey is excited see LEAP members using their new laptops. He said, ultimately, he hopes that, through programs like this, people are able to see beyond the harmful stereotypes often cast on homeless people. “The most important thing we are doing, especially in the climate that we are experiencing today in the country, is really putting the human face forward of people experiencing homelessness,” Morrissey said. “We couldn’t be more grateful for people like those at Hirschfeld Kraemer and Xantrion, who see that people have mistakenly blamed those experiencing the problem of homelessness as the ones who have created it.” 08.05.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

o have vaccinations reach all populations, Five Acres and Carbon Health partnered to vaccinate foster children. “We recognized that, due to a variety of factors, our children were not able to stand in line at those mass vaccination areas, waiting for that vaccination,” said Five Acres chief operation officer Rachel McClements. Based in Altadena and established in 1888, Five Acres is a foster care, adoption and mental health nonprofit organization. Last year, the nonprofit helped 9,000 children and families throughout the pandemic. They partnered with Carbon Health to vaccinate the eligible at-risk children to open up more opportunities for them to be fostered, adopted or reunited with their families. In Los Angeles County, there are about 21,000 children in foster care, an increase of about 3.5%. Founded in 2015, Carbon Health has grown exponentially during the last year as the pandemic raged in Southern California. In the last year, they have grown from a company of just 100 to 1,600 employees. Many in Los Angeles, may know Carbon Health from its emails containing test results from COVID-19 tests. Carbon Health has worked closely with the city to provide 1.5 million vaccines and 1.4 million COVID-19 tests, running mass vaccination sites, such as Dodger Stadium. “At Carbon Health, our mission is to provide health care for everyone,” said Carbon

Carbon Health Registered Nurse Sheryl Goldman administers the vaccine to children in foster care living at Five Acres, as well as staff who signed up. Health spokesperson Ellen Bobella. “Everyone really means everyone, whether it’s for foster children or (people) at the zoo. This was a really meaningful event for us.” The two companies vaccinated 21 of their residents, who are 12-years or older, and five members of the Five Acres staff. The Pfizer-BioNtech has only been authorized for people 12 years or older. “We realized that Five Acres and Carbon Health would make a wonderful partnership,” McClements said. “We determined that we would set aside time for Carbon Health to come in and be able to vaccinate our children who live with us on campus. We realized that this would be a great opportunity to come to their residence, to come to where they live and provide a vaccination clinic to them.” While Carbon Health has had ample experience running mass vaccination sites, which are optimized for speed and efficiency to vaccinate tens of thousands of people a day, they had to rework for a smaller clinic such as the one at Five Acres. “Five Acres and our Carbon team tried to make the event as accommodating and as efficient as possible,” said Carbon Health chief medical officer Dr. Sujal Mandavia. “We wanted to plan so that we could make the event as seamless and comfortable as possible, going beyond just comfortable but to being fun, interactive and engaging for these young patients,” Making the children’s experience enjoyable was at the utmost importance, considering many have had many traumatic experiences throughout their lives. “Very often when children leave their parents or are brought into the foster care system they will have a medical evaluation, which is incredibly important, but it can feel very scary,” McClements said. “When we spoke to Carbon Health and Sujal, we really wanted to change that.” To alleviate any fears and to make the children comfortable, Five Acres and Carbon Health had a petting zoo filled with a variety of animals and ice cream trucks present for the two vaccination days. “I think it’s those small touches that make a big difference for children when they’re having to go through something which is anxiety provoking for anybody,” Mandavia said.

celed last year and this year due to the pandemic. This year’s giveaway, however, has received the biggest response from the community. “We’re proud to partner with Assemblymember Holden for our annual backpack giveaway to make a difference in our community,” said Sharron Ross-Lemle, vice president of the Eta Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. “It was great to see so many smiles handing out backpacks today.” Holden added, “Providing backpacks and school supplies is one less thing for families and their children to worry about before class resumes.”

One Colorado hosts concerts, back-to-school fundraisers By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor

fter a year and half absence, live music is back in Pasadena. As part of its summer concert series, One Colorado will host live concerts for diners and shoppers to enjoy. “Music always is a great enhancement to any dining kind of notation,” said spokesperson Rishika Mahtani. “We just wanted to create a fun, vibrant atmosphere for all our diners and to support our tenants.” Bands and DJs will host these free concerts every Friday and Saturday nights throughout August in the courtyard of One Colorado. Diners can also reserve seats at nearby restaurants. Throughout the pandemic, large gatherings — including concerts— have been strictly prohibited. However, in April, as vaccinations rose and cases began to drop, California dismissed the bans allowing outdoor concerts. In June, they peeled back the restrictions on “mega events” such as large concerts and festivals. With fears of the Delta variant looming around, Mahtani and One Colorado have worked closely with the Pasadena Public Health Department to ensure safety as well as following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. “Throughout all our events, whether it’s the concerts or our back-to-school events, we follow every guideline that the CDC has in place,” Mahtani said. “We worked with the city of Pasadena to make sure that we’re compliant with everything they need us to be from a safety and health perspective.” In conjunction with the concerts, One Colorado is hosting the back-to-school events Load the Lockers through Aug. 9 and Book Swap from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 7. “We just wanted to build an initiative to help the community and give back to the community,” Mahtani said. “We’re committed to helping our communities to help them in whatever ways that we can.” The Load the Lockers initiative began last year and helped gather a plethora writing utensils, folders, backpacks, disinfectant wipes and much more. “We got a ton,” Mahtani said. “I think we packed up five to seven large boxes worth of donations. We had to empty the locker a couple of times, just so that we had some room for the donations from everybody.” The bright-yellow donation locker is in the courtyard of One Colorado behind the Nike and Salt and Straw. For Load the Lockers, One Colorado is encouraging neighbors to bring their “pre-loved” books and swap them for a new read. Arts and crafts workshops will be available, during which participants can create a custom bookmark with DJs playing music in the background. Vroman’s bookstore will also host a children’s book reading at 11 a.m. The surplus books from the swap will be donated. “Our biggest goal is to be part of the community,” Mahtani said. “To be a safe space where everybody can congregate have fun and spend their afternoon shopping and dining with us.”

South Pasadena Library creates comic book club By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor

riven by their shared love for manga, graphic novels and comic books South Pasadena Librarians Cynthia Mitchem and Olivia Radbill started a comic book club to spread the literary art form to their visitors. “It’s an entire world filled with lots of people,” Radbill said. “Hopefully the club will be able to introduce people to that world. There’s so much different graphic literature.” The club began in April and, with COVID-19 still looming, it began gathering via Zoom. They provide the reading materials for each meeting through the library’s databases. “It’s kind of something we talked about as an adult program we could do,” Radbill said. “There’s a lot of different elements of the story to discuss: the artwork, the dialogue, the themes, the context, all of that. I love the format of graphic novel clubs and we wanted to bring that to the library.” The club generally attracts four to nine people, which allows the group to have a livelier discussion. The club’s virtual nature allows people outside of the city from places such as Ohio to join in on the discussion. “Our audience is pretty spread out,” Radbill said. “We have a couple of locals attend from South Pasadena, but for the most part, we’ve been getting people from Thousand Oaks. We’ve had someone from Ohio come one time.” Mitchem and Radbill curate the books for each month, typically tying them to current events. In the past, the two have led discussions on “They Called Us Enemy” by George Takei for Asian American and Pacific Islander Month and “Gender Queer” by Maia Kobabe for Pride Month. The club invited Kobabe to talk about her graphic novel via Zoom, where about 70 people from across North America attended. “We make all the decisions for what books we’re going to read,” Radbill said. “We sometimes try to tie it into something that’s happening, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes it’s a little more informal.” While the two librarians love comics, and its various subgenres, their fondness with the literary form stems from two different places. Radbill began delving into the graphic novel world when she was in graduate school and landed her first library job as a shelver. She was captivated by the vast range of topics graphic novels covered but fascinated by the horror genre. “When you are looking at a graphic novel, it’s not just about the words you’re reading,” Radbill said. “You’re looking at people’s expressions, you’re looking at the action and you’re interpreting those, putting them in context, and that’s an important skill for building literacy.” Radbill also runs her own comic book club outside of the library for women, mainly focusing on literature written or illustrated by females. Mitchem said, while she loved reading Garfield, Peanuts and Calvin Hobbes, she was enamored by mangas, comics or graphic novels originating in Japan. Mitchem, who is half Japanese, used the mangas to help her connect with her heritage and to hone her grasp of the Japanese language. “It was a way to learn more common phrases and to see language in a more natural setting,” she said. “Your parents aren’t going to teach you how to say some of the slang.” The comic book club meets every 7 p.m. the first Thursday of each month, and will continue to meet via Zoom. The next meeting is on Aug. 5 and features the manga adaption of H.P. Lovecraft’s “At the Mountains of Madness” by Gou Tanabe. “We are super open to having all opinions and all different types of people,” Radbill said.

ince opening Car Artisan Chocolate in mid-March, Haris Car has watched his Car Artisan Chocolate grow and evolve. “As you open, your customers get to be a part of that growth with you,” Car said. “Initially, I was hoping to open earlier, but being a perfectionist held me back.” A small café serving espresso drinks and fresh pastries fronts the open kitchen of the chocolate factory, dividing the space almost evenly. Recently, it hummed with activity at the café’s counter, often manned by Car, and among the small team of chocolate makers, which includes Car’s younger brother, Amir. Car’s chocolate-making operation got its start just down Colorado Boulevard, at Rosebud Coffee, a nonprofit café space run by Dan Davidson. “There were a lot of blessings in disguise that occurred for me,” Car said. “From February 2020 to February 2021, I subleased with Rosebud. They originally had a brewery that was supposed to open.” Wild Parrot Brewery signed a lease in January of last year, to share the expansive Rosebud space, but the pandemic descended before construction could begin. “What happened unintentionally, the delay in their process allowed me more time to incubate and develop as a business, meeting my customers and evolving the brand,” Car explained. “We really dove into wholesale over there because we only had one item to retail. Transitioning here, we cut our wholesale business by 90%. Now we want to get back to that eventually and scale our business through that channel of revenue as well.” The idea of opening the café, as a diversified, retail outlet for his chocolate emerged and changed during his tenancy at Rosebud. “It evolved. For our customers, solely having our chocolate bars, it’s more of an occasional impulse buy,” Car noted. “How do we do something excellent all around?” In part, the answer was partnering with other local artisans. The menu at Car Artisan Chocolate is largely limited to an array of freshly made pastries. They’re not dropped off by a third-party wholesale vendor. Car contacted Joseph Abrakjian from locally beloved Seed Bakery on Washington Boulevard. “He’s a very cool guy. I met him at the farmers market in South Pas,” Car said, referring to the Thursday evening CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

market where Seed Bakery maintains a stand. Abrakjian’s team at Seed creates the pastry dough for Car’s team to craft and bake daily. “It’s local,” Car continued, explaining that the coffee at the café is also provided by a rotating cast of local roasters, like Unity Sourcing and Roasting. In addition to the fresh pastries, a special offering, avocado chipotle toast ($8), was advertised at the counter. “We have four toasts we’re planning on launching, (including) this one,” Car noted. Stay tuned for: chocolate hazelnut toast; ricotta with roasted grape; and soft scrambled egg on toasted croissant. Car consults closely on the menu development with chef Josh Lu, the sous chef at Michelin-starred Le Comptoir. That’s an unusually impressive provenance for avocado toast. “He’s extremely talented. He’s going to do a lot of great things,” Car said of Lu, who also developed the food menu at Rosebud Café. The chocolate is made fresh on premises and is available in large, attractively packaged bars, priced at $11 a piece. There’s a 5% discount for three bars, 10% off for four and 20% off for six or more. The cacao is sourced from organic, single origin farms from Nicaragua, Peru, Mexico, Tanzania and Madagascar. For a seasoned chocolatier venturing into retail production, Car was inspired on a vacation trip to Peru in 2019 with his girlfriend, Amanda Iavasile. “We drove a car throughout the whole country.” On their final day in Arequipa, the couple went for a walk and took a random turn. “We came across a chocolate factory, just stumbled upon it,” Car recalled. “I always liked chocolate, but I had no idea what artisan craft chocolate was. It was my first experience with that. We came back the next day and took a tour and a chocolate course. “It sparked curiosity.” The next day as the couple was changing planes in Colombia, Car said he was going to pursue making chocolate. “I told Amanda, ‘I’m going to start a chocolate company.’ That was the summer of 2019.” During his return, Car encountered John Nanci, who’s considered to be the godfather of craft chocolate. “He was one of the pioneers in the movement,” he said. Car mastered his production technique, with instruction from Nanci. He also developed a relationship with Meridian Cacao, a broker based in Portland, Oregon, where Car sources his Tanzanian and Peruvian cacao. In the meantime, he formed relationships with farms in Mexico and Nicaragua. By trial and error, Car the perfectionist began to perfect his craft. “Experience and mistakes sharpen the sword,” said Car, who graduated from Pasadena High School, along with his brother Amir. In the relatively brief time Car’s chocolate has been available, he’s already received critical praise from local chocolate guru Ruth Kennison of the Chocolate Project. “To say she’s been an asset to my business is an understatement,” he said. Car credits his small team for his success so far. Besides Amir, who supervises chocolate production, Car’s beverage director and lead barista Kim Completo manages the coffee business and counter training. The newest team member is Emma Flores, who began as a paid intern through Dan Davidson’s Coffee for a Cause program at Rosebud Coffee. The program trains local teens and provides them with internships at local businesses. She recently became a full member of Car’s team. The Cars’ parents were Bosnian war refugees and emigrated to Pasadena from Germany, when the brothers were young children. Car is enthusiastic about his community and the prospects for his fledgling business. “If we can help inspire the community in any way, we’re very thrilled,” he said. “As we grow, we want our customers to grow with us too. To be Pasadena’s only chocolate factory, it’s very cool.”

lack Restaurant Week is starting a new campaign, No Crumb Left Behind, to help Black-owned small businesses across the country recover after the pandemic and connect them to new resources. BRW was founded in Houston in 2016 by Warren Luckett, Falayn Ferrell and Derek Robinson and has since expanded its reach to the southwest, southeast and northwest regions to increase Black-owned culinary participants. “With small businesses still recovering from the pandemic, it is important to provide as much support as possible,” Ferrell said. “The No Crumb Left Behind campaign speaks to our goal of supporting 1,000 black-owned culinary businesses in this year’s Black Restaurant Week campaign.” Black Restaurant Week is Friday, Aug. 6, to Sunday, Aug. 15. For more information, visit blackrestaurantweeks.com. Black Restaurant Week LLC focuses on the importance of systemic barriers faced by Black-owned restaurants, like the disproportionate access to business loans, for example. The University of California, Santa Cruz found that 41% of Black-owned businesses have shuttered since February compared to 17% of white-owned businesses. “Black-owned small businesses already face difficulty accessing capital to start their business and many owners are forced to use their personal savings, personal credit cards, personal assets or apply for loans with high-interest rates to open their businesses,” Robinson said. “During times of economic downturn, it becomes increasingly difficult to operate a business that already has a slim profit margin.” So, in partnership with SoCal Gas, Black Restaurant Week LLC- Los Angeles

and multiple Black-owned restaurants will take part in an August showcase to build community awareness and help with the pandemic recovery process. “Black-owned businesses play an important role in the livelihood of our communities. And food, especially from family-owned restaurants, serves as the social fabric that brings us together,” said Cedric Williams, vice president of customer service at SoCalGas. “That’s why we have supported Black Restaurant Week, an important cultural initiative that celebrates the flavors of African American, African and Caribbean cuisine, since its launch in Los Angeles.” Onil Chibas has experience with food catering and hospitality, which he displays in his restaurant Deluxe 1717. It is where he hosted family-style dinners at a long communal table. But when the pandemic hit, he decided to transition to meal delivery. He would prepare one of his fine meals that included an entree, side dish and dessert and include heating instructions so people could continue enjoying his food from the safety of one’s home. “We really had to pivot, and things only continue to change,” Chibas said. “We just opened up the space and made it a little restaurant again.” Chibas also started hosting “Wonderful Wednesdays” to help overcome the challenges that the pandemic created. He invited people to sign up and come back to the dining space for a personally curated meal and community bonding. He said he’s excited to be a part of No Crumb Left Behind and hopes to expose Deluxe 1717 to more people in the community. “It’s been really helpful to know that there’s support out there,” he said. “For that I’m so grateful and it’s so great to be a part of this.” 08.05.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 11

CA residents scramble to get last Walking Liberty Rolls CALIFORNIA - Once California residents got wind that California State Restricted Bank Rolls filled with Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s were being handed over, there was a mad dash to get them. That’s because some of these U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins are already worth hundreds in collector value. “It’s like a run on the banks. The phones are ringing off the hook. That’s because everyone is trying to get them before they’re all gone,” according to officials at the National Mint and Treasury who say they can barely keep up with all the orders. In fact, they had to impose a strict limit of 4 California State Restricted Bank Rolls. So, if you get the chance to get your hands on these State Restricted Bank Rolls you better hurry because hundreds of California residents already have and you don’t want to miss out. You see, the U.S. Gov’t stopped mint-

ing these Silver Walking Liberties in 1947 and there can never be any more which makes them extremely collectible. And here’s the best part. The rolls are unsearched so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value. That’s why at just the $39 state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury it’s a deal too good to pass up. But you better hurry because these California State Restricted Bank Rolls are the only ones known to exist and California residents are grabbing them up as fast as they can. That’s because they make amazing gifts for children, grandchildren and loved ones. Just imagine the look on their face when you hand them one of the State Restricted Rolls — they’ll tell everyone they know what you did for them.

■ GOT ‘EM: Residents all across California who get their hands on these State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls are definitely showing them off. That’s because they are the only ones known to exist. And here’s the best part, these Bank Rolls are loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty coins some dating back to the early 1900’s and worth up to 100 times their face value so everyone wants them.

Last State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls go to California residents

California residents get first dibs on last remaining Bank Rolls loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for the next 2 days STATE DISTRIBUTION: A strict limit of 4 State Restricted Bank Rolls per CA resident has been imposed CALIFORNIA - “It’s a miracle these State Restricted Bank Rolls even exist. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. For the next 2 days the last remaining State of California Restricted Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties are actually being handed over to California residents who call the State Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. “I recently spoke with a numismatic expert in United States of America coins and currency who said ‘In all my years as a numismatist I’ve only ever seen a handful of these rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties issued by the U.S. Gov’t back in the early 1900’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Bank Rolls still in pristine condition is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of California Restricted Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of California residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because after the Bank Rolls

were loaded with 15 rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of California Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that some of these coins date clear back to the early 1900’s and are worth up to 100 times their face value, so there is no telling what California residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of California you cover only the $39 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s fifteen rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties worth up to 100 times their face value for just $585 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $118 per coin which totals $1,770 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. The only thing California residents need to do is call the State Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s newspaper publication before the 2-day order deadline ends. “Rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars are now worth $40 - $825 each in collector value,” Lynne said. “We’re guessing thousands of California residents will be taking the maximum limit of 4 Bank Rolls because they make such amazing gifts for any occasion for children, parents, grandparents, friends and loved ones,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s why hundreds of Hotline Operators are standing by to answer the phones beginning at 8:30 am this morning. We’re going to do our best, but with just 2 days to answer all the calls it won’t be easy. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all.” Lynne said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of California and call the National Toll-Free Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow. ■

HOW TO CLAIM THE LAST STATE RESTRICTED BANK ROLLS FACTS:

If you are a California State Resident read the important information below about claiming the State Silver Bank Rolls, then call the State Toll-Free Hotline at 8:30 am: 1-800-979-3771 EXT: RWB1524

Are these Silver Walking Liberties worth more than other half dollars:

Yes. These U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties were minted in the early 1900’s and will never be minted again. That makes them extremely collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all and these Walking Liberties were one of the last silver coins minted for circulation. That’s why many of them now command hundreds in collector value so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

How much are State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls worth:

It’s impossible to say, but some of these U.S Gov’t issued Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s are worth up to 100 times the face value and there are 15 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know they are the only California State Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and Walking Liberties are highly collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

Why are so many California residents claiming them:

Because they are the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and everyone wants their share. Each Bank Roll contains a whopping 15 Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value. Best of all California residents are guaranteed to get them for the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty for the next two days.

How do I get the State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls:

California residents are authorized to claim up to the limit of 4 State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls by calling the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-979-3771 Ext. RWB1524 starting at precisely 8:30 am this morning. Everyone who does is getting the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist. That’s a full Bank Roll containing 15 Silver Walking Liberties from the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Rolls and that’s a real steal because non state residents are not permitted to call before 5 pm tomorrow and must pay $1,770 for each California State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Roll if any remain.

Arcadia pulp artist Howard Simpson won the Best Pulp Interior Illustrations award for his work in Bulldog Drummond: On Poisoned Ground.

Pulp art traces its origins back to cheap dime novels published at the turn of the 20th century. It gets its name from the cheap wood pulp used for the paper.

Arcadia artist wins award for pulp art

t 5 years old, Howard Simpson found an old stack of comic books in his New Jersey home. It was then he knew he wanted to be an illustrator. “I decided that’s what I wanted to do,” Simpson said decades later. “I wanted to tell stories visually.” Inspired by artists like Arthur Rackham, Aubrey Beardsley, Virgil Finlay and Rembrandt, the once bright-eyed 5-year-old achieved his dream of visual storytelling, winning numerous awards throughout the years. Simpson, now living in Arcadia, recently received the Pulp Factory Award for Best Pulp Interior Illustration for his art in the paperback novel “Bulldog Drummond: On Poisoned Ground.” “This one was voted by my peers so it’s especially gratifying to get noticed in that way,” Simpson said. “They know the struggles. I’m very gratified and very humbled to still be receiving awards and being recognized. And hope there’s more to come in the future.” The pulp art style emerged at the turn of the 19th century in inexpensive dime novels. The magazines were dubbed pulp magazines because they were printed on cheap wood pulp. With its brightly colored and often racy covers, pulp magazines differed from the glossy well-established magazines of the time. The magazines reached their peak in the 1930s before facing a steep decline following paper rationing during World War II. Pulp illustration branches through many different genres, such as detective stories, adventure and horror. “It’s the style and approach that defines it as pulp fiction, even though it has many genres within it,” Simpson said. “It’s not really similar to graphic novels because it’s not done in panel-dependent format or sequential continuity. It’s more like an illustrated novel.” Simpson’s artistic talent was noticed when he was in elementary school.

“When I was in elementary school, I had an art teacher take interest in me since I had talent,” Simpson said. Recognizing Simpson’s talent, his art teacher pushed him to apply to an arts high school to cultivate his potential. “It just expanded my knowledge, finding out about all these different venues I could apply my art to,” said Simpson. “At that time, I only thought about comic books and magazines, but then I found a much broader and greater world that I could apply to.” While in high school, friends and people in the neighborhood would approach him to make drawings and other commissions for them. They would ask him to design signs, illustrations and even fashion sketches. Anything that they asked him for he could draw it. He continued this side business when he attended Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. He eventually began working for advertising agencies during his junior year doing storyboards and other graphic design work. He also began drawing comic books. After he graduated, fueled by his passion for art, he took every commission that he could take. “I just started drawing everything I could get my hands on,” said Simpson. “I worked for Simon & Schuster, Random House, Warner Bros., Disney and Nickelodeon.” Simpson continues to work mainly getting his clients through his reputation as a stellar artist. With the awards that he’s won throughout the years and the accomplishments he made in his life, Simpson is simply grateful that he gets to do what he loves every day. “I tell people that the difference between a job and career is a job is something that you have to do to pay your bills,” Simpson said. “A career is something you’ll do whether somebody pays you for it or not.”

THE STEOPLES, Wide Through the Eyes of No One (Stones Throw): HHH Advancing beyond the “unresolved” drift of 2017’s “Six Rocks,” GB (longtime L.A. beatmaker Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker) and Yeofi Andoh (the U.K. vocalist aka A Race of Angels) position silken harmonies front and center in often surreal R&B soundscapes textured with folk melodies, Latin rhythms, analog vinyl loops, acoustic guitar and sweeping synthesizer. The results can still feel intentionally diffuse (“Leaning on Me”), yet soothing. Highlights: “Everybody’s Song,” the melancholy “Lonely Behavior,” “In the Dance,” “The Real Wealth” (“To get real peace of mind/ I suggest you love what you are/ I suggest you love that you are/ Know this life itself ’s the real wealth”). steoples.bandcamp.com JAKE BREAKS, Breaksy (Wide Hive): HHHH An absorbing instrumental set from guitarists Gregory Howe and Ross Howe and bassist/pianist Matt Montgomery of the Bay Area’s Throttle Elevator Music jazz-rock collective, titled after mysterious turntablist collaborator Jacob B. In contrast to early-2000s TEM recordings (which centered around then-leader Kamasi Washington’s saxophone), these nine tracks are more percussive and psychedelic, exploring the mood-setting capacities of guitars and bass. The strongest tracks — “Approaching the Mystical,” “Low Light Bar Scene,” “Shade Streaming,” “Befreee” — feature guest saxophonist Douglas Rowan, trumpeter Timothy Hyland and trombonist Michael “Rinnie” Rintabone, and evoke a midnight world of exploration and catharsis. widehive.com LOS LOBOS, Native Sons (New West): HHH½ Opening their self-described “ode to Los Angeles” with a greasy spin on Thee Midniters’ “Love Special Delivery,” the beloved East L.A. band proceeds to honor the city and folk, R&B, rock and pop heroes and peers whose rhythms they internalized while developing their recognizable sound. David Hidalgo and Louie Pérez’s soul-swaying title tune, the lone original, fits comfortably between a high-spirited update of Percy Mayfield’s “Never No More” and a saxophone-ribboned romp through “Farmer John” that pays righteous props to Pasadena’s Don & Dewey. Other highlights: a robust take on Lalo Guerrero’s “Los Chucos Suaves,” stormy versions of Stephen Stills’ “Bluebird” and “For What It’s Worth,” and a ruminative glide through War’s “The World is a Ghetto” (enhanced by Little Willie G. and Barrence Whitfield). loslobos.org TITO JACKSON, Under Your Spell (Gulf Coast/Hillside): HHH½ Love, trust and togetherness are the focus of the scion of the Jackson tribe throughout this smoothly produced R&B set. A spate of good-natured groovers includes the slow-burning “Big Leg Woman,” “Dyin’ Over Here” and the new Gamble & Huff song “All in the Family Blues” (“Growin’ up in the family ain’t no peaches and cream”). The highlight is lead single “Love One Another;” over infectious harmonies, Stevie Wonder’s harmonica solo and a stomping beat, its hopeful message exemplifies the album’s mood: “Why don’t we walk with one another/ Talk with one another/ If only we love one another now.” titojackson.com

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916) 939-0772 or visit this Internet Website www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2021-2865. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Date: 07/17/2021 American Default Management 433 N.
