ear great, great-niece or nephew, I’m writing you knowing that by the time you read this I’ll have died. I’m writing this two weeks before my 100th birthday. I can’t imagine I’ll last much longer. I’ve given this letter to my lawyer, Rachel, with instructions to share it after I go to that gigantic Feminist March in the Sky, presided over by the late, great Gloria Steinem. I’m currently sitting in my van, a womb-like space complete with a candle and my small dog Scalawag. I hide her in a bag, having trained her to stay quiet. There used to be a running gag from the older generation to the younger that went something like: “When I was a kid, we had to walk five miles through the snow just to get to school!” or “When I was a kid, we didn’t have TV; we had to read instead!” You get the drift, but these clichés were used to demonstrate how much better off you young-uns have it. We can no longer lay a guilt trip on you for how much better you have it. You are suffering from our neglect, hubris and “cando” exceptionalist attitudes that we could continue to live life while ignoring the earth and its limits. You are, no doubt, already keenly aware of significant catastrophes we’ve endured. Seniors have been left to die unless they can justify their existence; the West and East coasts seceded from the union of what is now called “Middle America”; a vast water pipe is shared cross-country so we can at least have a gallon a day per person, no exceptions! I share my water with Scalawag. She is truly the only thing that keeps me sane. Rather than the major events, I’ll share with you the more quotidian aspects of life before the rapturists hijacked the center of America and took over. When I was your age — yes, I said it — people were told to rinse cans and bottles with running water to recycle them. In some cases, the impulse to recycle and the mandates to separate trash were on the right track. However, there was a colossal exposé that revealed the recycling industry mainly was a sham. So not only did we waste precious water for no reason, local governments mostly jettisoned materials into landfills rather than have brilliant new scientists obtain grants to create effective re-purposing on a massive scale. By the way, you know Exxon as a water monopoly. Long ago, they made tons of money in the fossil-fuel racket. Eventually, they finally saw that more incredible wealth would come from taking over the remaining aquifers and re-routing perennial floodwaters from the other parts of the country to the West. And it wasn’t just water… Oh, the food we wasted! It makes me sick to even contemplate. (Ooh, I never saw “plate” in “contemplate” before.) We’d leave good food on our plates to prove to others that we weren’t pigs. Some of us, using impossible standards, intentionally limited our food intake to be thin. We threw away more food than was eaten in many countries around the world simply because it wasn’t “attractive.” Oh, and people would intentionally avoid life-sustaining wheat products because they thought gluten was terrible for them, even when there was never any credible proof. I would happily lick plates now. We used to walk and hike — can you believe it? It’s true; there were no restrictions on access to wilderness areas. Now only rich people can visit the National Parks… what’s left of them. I got to go to Africa and see elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, hippos and baboons. I even saw penguins off the southeast coast of South Africa. I’ve seen whales! I’m so hoping that the Ark Project (not to be confused with the Christian Ark theme park in Kentucky) successfully saved the DNA of all of the animals we’ve
lost. Last I heard, that DNA is sharing space with the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Let’s hope the rapturists don’t confiscate the seeds and genetic materials as being the work of Satan. The rapturists simply dug in their heels more intensely, once four — yes, count ’em, four — specific end days came and went. These people, who sold everything and waited on their front steps — and waited, and waited, and waited — won’t give up until everyone converts. Some of them bailed on Revelations and joined the dominionists (aka “rapturist light”), but the majority simply came up with another date. Meanwhile, we of the nonrapture beliefs didn’t dare laugh out loud, but we certainly did in the privacy of our own spaces. Yes, we cling to our humor because we must. I hope you can forgive us. If you don’t, I understand. Please join your local undergrounds. Norway continues to be a free country with lots of activists and lots of beachfront property. And if you get a chance, when you go by fenced parking lots with lots of vans, stop and visit one of your elders. We have precious memories that we’re literally dying to share. Love, Aunt Ellen. handful of Latinas gathered in 1981 hoping to answer a single question: What can we do to help the community? “A number of us belonged to another Latina women’s group that just stopped, it no longer existed,” Cristina Fuentes said. “We wanted to continue… We wanted to be more community-driven, helping out the community.” Soon after posing that question, Fuentes, along with three other women — Lois Gutierrez, Nena Maynez-Castro and Jessie Lopez — formed the Community Organization of Pasadena for Advancement. In 2021, Pasadena’s longest-running Latina organization has been forced to shut down after 40 years due to a drop in recruitment. “I think it’s an incredible achievement,” Fuentes said. “We should be proud of the fact that we lasted 40 years… In our own little way, we’ve left our mark and I know we supported a lot of people.” The group originally named itself the Chicanas Organized for Progress in Aztlan. Chicanas means American women of Mexican descent and Aztlan is the ancestral homeland of the Aztecs. Roughly translated to the “Land of Whiteness,” some have referred to Aztlan as the land the United States annexed from Mexico after the Mexican American War. Understanding education to be the great equalizer, the group soon supported young Chicanas by providing college scholarships. Every year they chose one Latina of Mexican descent from each of the public high schools in Pasadena and granted her a scholarship of, at first, $500. The scholarship was later increased to $1,000. Throughout the years, they have help around 180 young women, some of whom were living in abject poverty. “The struggle of a lot of them going through to just survive,” president Darlene Leyba said before choking up. She recalled a student telling her about how her father made money by collecting cardboard. That student was later awarded a scholarship. While the scholarship’s amount may pay for one semester at a California state school, the grant focuses more on acknowledging the young women’s achievements. “It wasn’t so much about the money because they weren’t big grants,” Fuentes said. “It was about acknowledging them, acknowledging their efforts and empowering them.” When COPA began, just like many new nonprofit volunteer organizations, they were strapped for cash. Lacking grant funding, the women made money any way they could, whether it was selling drinks at the Pasadena Jazz Festival, peddling cookbooks to residents or even hosting garage sales. “It was just a group of really hardworking women,” Fuentes said. “We were just very dedicated and really wanted to help the community in any way possible.” While the organization’s focus was to empower Chicanas, it helped residents register to vote, and donated gift baskets, clothes, shoes and purses filled with toiletries for Mother’s Day. “Whoever needed help we would help them,” Gutierrez said. “If they couldn’t pay for their water bill or electric bill, we (paid) them. If they needed something done in their homes, like plumbing and we knew they didn’t have the money to do it, then we would pay for it.” Throughout the years, COPA has been honored by politicians and the community, with benches in Gwinn and Eaton Blanche parks and tile in the Rose Bowl entrance. COPA also inspired other Latina-led organizations throughout the city, including its successor Latinas Inspired for Tomorrow. But as COPA nears its end, the fire and passion to help the community are still present. “I was hoping that we could keep going,” Gutierrez said. “I think I still have a few more years.”

Pasadena mandates vaccine for city employees By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor
C
ity Manager Steve Mermell issued an order requiring all Pasadena city employees to get vaccinated. “The city manager is exerting a management right because the public health issue is a major concern, especially with this new delta variant,” said city spokesperson Lisa Derderian. “As our health officers said recently, this variant is running circles around us.” The order comes as the delta variant of the novel coronavirus has caused dramatic increases in cases and deaths. In Los Angeles County, officials have reported a 62.7% increase in cases and a 56.1% increase in deaths over the last 14 days. In Pasadena, officials reported a seven-day average of 4.1 cases on July 1. On Aug. 5, the seven-day average was 32.3, a 687.8% increase. Pasadena reported 44 new cases on Aug. 6. “Being vaccinated hopefully will minimize the symptoms,” said Derderian. “We’re seeing all these stories now on the news about unvaccinated people and their last words before they’re put on a ventilator and pass away is they wish they would have been vaccinated.” According to an internal survey conducted by the city, Pasadena employs more than 2,000 people, 60% of whom are vaccinated, according to an internal survey conducted by the city. The order requires every city employee to be fully vaccinated and present proof of vaccination by Sept. 17. Staff may request an exemption based on medical, disability or religious exemptions. They may also request a deferral pending final approval of one COVID-19 vaccine from the Food and Drug Administration. If employees received an exemption or deferral, they must wear a face mask while indoors or in a shared vehicle and must undergo weekly COVID-19 tests. The city will pay for the COVID-19 tests. “We’ve had several employees who have tested positive in the last few weeks,” said Derderian. “It does impact the workforce and many of our city employees interact with the public on an ongoing basis.” The mandate comes as many governmental entities begin mandating vaccinations. In late July, President Joe Biden mandated all federal employees to get the vaccine. The federal government directly employs about 4 million people but with federal contractors — which may be affected by the order — the number may rise to almost 7 million. Hilda Solis, chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, issued a similar order to require all 110,000 county employees to get the vaccine. Pasadena Unified School District pushed its decision about mandatory vaccinations to Thursday, Aug. 12, the day schools reopen. The district may require all PUSD staff to get vaccinated as well as eligible students. Mayor Victor Gordo threatened to withhold funding if the district did not take action to ensure the safety of staff and students, specifically mentioning vaccinations. “I just think it would be shameful to have schools not reopened because employees are not vaccinated,” Gordo said. About 96% of all PUSD staff are vaccinated.

Tournament of Roses disputes city’s motion for attorney fees By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor
T
he Pasadena Tournament of Roses filed an opposition Aug. 6 disputing the City of Pasadena’s request for the federal court to award its attorneys’ fees. The city seeks to recoup the $400,000 of taxpayer’s money. The tournament claims that the $400,000 figure is “excessive for a case that never even went to trial.” It also argues that because the city did not prevail in the case its request should be denied. “We agree that it is unfortunate that taxpayer dollars have been needlessly spent,” wrote the tournament in a statement. “This could have all been avoided had the city not claimed ownership of our trademarks in the first place or refused our numerous requests to meet to resolve the issue.” The tournament contends that because the city did not outright win the case it could not be labeled the prevailing party and thus be awarded attorneys’ fees. “Our agreement with the city provides that the losing side pays the other’s attorneys’ fees only if the other side ‘substantially prevails,’” wrote the tournament. “As the city did not prevail on the merits it cannot be considered the ‘prevailing party’ under the rules.” The tournament said the case involved two main issues: trademarks and the use of the force majeure clause. The tournament sought to stop the city from claiming it co-owned the rights of the Rose Bowl Game and associated trademarks. During court proceedings, the city conceded the trademark issue and accepted that the tournament had sole rights to the “trademarks associated with the Rose Bowl Game.” On the force majeure issue, the tournament contends that because the court declined to rule on the matter because it would be premature to speculate if another force majeure would occur. Force majeure refers to a clause that is found in most contracts to remove liability for unavoidable catastrophes — commonly referred to as an “act of God.” “The claim is not ripe for adjudication and not appropriate for declaratory relief at this juncture,” wrote U.S. District Judge Andre Birotte. The court contended that the dispute would need to wait for another force majeure event to be resolved. In the statement, the tournament said that it hopes another force majeure event never occurs. The city continues to claim that it prevailed in the lawsuit. Birotte granted six city motions and dismissed the tournament’s claims of trademark infringement, unfair competition, false association, false endorsement, false designation of origin and false advertising.

fter its old minivan broke down on the side of the highway, Centennial Place was in desperate need of a new vehicle. “Our van at Centennial Place broke down, and we were in urgent need of a new mode of transport for our residents,” stated Anne Miskey, CEO of Union Station Homeless Services. Centennial Place is one of the three permanent supportive housing complexes that Union Station owns in Pasadena. They provide on-site case management and supportive services for very low-income adults. The facility houses 142 residents who are formerly homeless. The old minivan was the lifeline for many residents. It allowed them to travel to medical appointments, get money orders to pay rent and get groceries. “This is a population that has been identified as needing case management services,” said the program manager Jacob Friedman. “The population really struggles to get to appointments, to follow through on assigned tasks, to make appointments. The vehicle frees my team up to be able to get them there.” After learning of this need and looking for organizations to assist for their 35th anniversary, the Patron Saints Foundation donated a new Honda Pilot to Centennial Place. “When the foundation decided to celebrate its 35th anniversary we distilled from a very lengthy list of potential candidates of who we would give this special one-time grant,” said Patron Saints executive director Kathleen Shannon. “Union Station came to the forefront because of the homeless situation that everyone is facing in Southern California.” The Patron Saints Foundation was created in 1979 to raise funds for the not-for-profit St. Luke Hospital in Pasadena, however, when the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange sold the hospital they retained the $2.8 million endowment that allowed the foundation to continue serving the community. The endowment has since grown to $15 million, and Patron Saints continues to fund public charities that care for the local community’s health. “Having this vehicle gives us the ability to help someone on the spot,” Friedman said. “This gives us the opportunity for another case manager to step in and say, ‘I can take you over.’” While they waited to buy a new vehicle, the case managers would borrow vehicles from different facilities. The round trip to pick up the vehicle would take 40 minutes to an hour. The extra time needed to help their clients hampered their ability to help them. The new Pilot freed up the staff to help more clients, some of whom could not afford a bus pass or for any other public transportation. “It frees up my team, not just to support the clients more effectively but also more efficiently,” Friedman said. “We can do two transports in the amount of time it took to do one.” Additionally, case managers accompany their clients to appointments to ensure they are getting the assistance they need and to help them through the process of getting care. “I would like to thank (Patron Saints) on behalf of our team and all 142 residents at Centennial Place who will certainly benefit,” Friedman said. “I hope they know how much of an impact they’ve made by donating this vehicle.”

Parade offers a sneak peek of the floats By Pasadena Weekly Staff
A
s the Pasadena Tournament of Roses and its community partners actively plan for the 2022 Rose Parade presented by Honda, the second in a series of sneak previews of floral float entries. America’s New Year Celebration is Jan. 1. For more than 130 years, colorful florals, thematic interpretation and creative designs have been hallmarks of Rose Parade floats, and this year’s entries will continue the tradition. The theme of the 133rd Rose Parade — “Dream. Believe. Achieve.” — inspired the official renderings for fifth-year float participant The UPS Store and five longtime mainstays – Burbank Tournament of Roses Association, City of Hope, La Canada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association, Lutheran Hour Ministries and Torrance Rose Float Association – with 313 appearances between them. The six float concepts range from whimsical to realistic to heartfelt, reflecting the range of spectacular, supersized stories that have been embraced for generations. They are among dozens of commercial, noncommercial and self-built floats that will make the 5.5-mile procession along Pasadena’s historic Colorado Boulevard on New Year’s Day 2022.
City of Hope City of Hope’s 48th Rose Parade float entry, “Garden of Hopes and Dreams,” continues the world-renowned cancer research and treatment center’s tradition of spotlighting unwavering belief, perseverance and leadership in health care transformation. The 50-foot long and nearly 17-foot-tall float built by Phoenix Decorating Company will feature animated butterflies, which are symbols of hope and transformation. Whimsical mushrooms will punctuate rebirth after a chaotic time, a metaphor for the sustained battle patients and their health care teams have against cancer, as well as a respectful nod to the dreamed-about eventual end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cancer survivors will be on the float to ring in the new year standing next to daffodils — early springtime flowers that indicate winter is over. La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association The La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association’s 43rd entry, “Who Says We Can’t” will again be one of only six self-built floats in the entire parade. Designed, built, decorated and operated entirely by volunteers, the entry answers the age-old adage, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” La Cañada Flintridge resident Grant Delgatty’s design celebrates accomplishment against the odds and dreaming and believing in achievement, even when others say you can’t. So, as the world fully reopens thanks to the efforts of heroes in many walks of life, to all the doubters and nay-sayers of the world we say, “Who Says We Can’t.”
The UPS Store The UPS Store float, themed “Rise, Shine & Read!” celebrates the positive impact literacy can have on a child’s ability to succeed and showcases the company’s support of the Toys for Tots Literacy Program. Reading starts at home, and the float’s animated design features a colorful, spectacled rooster standing atop a stack of books, reading to his family of young chicks. Being built by Fiesta Parade Floats, The UPS Store 2022 Rose Parade float inspires children to rise up and let themselves shine bright through the power of literacy. Through reading, children can explore, imagine and dream.
Lutheran Hour Ministries Now in its 71st year, the Lutheran Hour Ministries float continues to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with millions of parade viewers around the world. Themed “Jesus Teaches” and built by Phoenix Decorating Co., the float features Jesus with 12 modern-day disciples in a lush, woodland setting. They are surrounded by books of Jesus’ teachings; trail markers noting attributes that guide our daily lives including joy, peace, love and kindness; and a cross firmly fixed to solid rock. LHM invites viewers to experience the hope and love found in Jesus, as well as join the Petal Pushers, a volunteer group that decorates eight to 10 Rose Parade floats annually.
Burbank Tournament of Roses Association The Burbank Tournament of Roses Association’s 89th Rose Parade entry is one of six floats that are self-built by volunteers. “An Unlikely Tale” is a story of friendship between a young knight and a dragon who make their dreams come true by spending time together and reading in harmony. Designed by Burbank resident Jonathan Friday, the Burbank Tournament of Roses Association entry will be 53 feet long, 18 feet wide and 25 feet tall at the top of the dragon’s head. The Burbank Tournament of Roses Association is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that designs, builds and decorates the city of Burbank’s float entry.
Torrance Rose Float Association The Torrance Rose Float Association submitted the 66th entry for the city of Torrance, “The Embodiment of Nature.” The conceptual design was chosen through a contest open to high school students within the city of Torrance. The majestic African elephant and the colorful toucan highlight the warmth and beauty of the animal kingdom while promoting awareness of endangered species, the perils they face, and the realities of habitat destruction, pollution and the shrinking of rain forests. This inspirational display, to be built by Fiesta Parade Floats, encourages everyone that if we believe it, we can achieve the dream of providing protection and safety to animals and the places they call home.

he jazz-themed sandwich shop Perry’s Joint has not reopened its dining room, so the weekly jam sessions are also silenced. Still, the joint is always jumping. With a steady stream of loyal guests lining up for takeout of the artisanal sandwiches and hot dogs, Perry’s Joint has made it through the pandemic. In fact, new opportunities arose for affable chef Perry Bennett. If Bennett and his operation has a slogan, it’s “community first.” Since opening in 2004 for breakfast and lunch, the small shop has always been a natural community hub. For years prior to the pandemic, Bennett has been a neighborhood mentor — and employer — to students from nearby John Muir High School. Since 2010, he’s also been an active patron of deserving graduating seniors from the high school. Annually, on the second Saturday of August, Bennett donates the proceeds from a day’s sales to a graduating Muir senior to assist with impending college expenses. “The fundraiser is for John Muir students attending fouryear universities, who have not only just done well academically but who have represented themselves as great people in the community, by being examples to their peers and all around good, wholesome people, who I believe can make a difference in our world,” Bennett explained. The idea was launched more than 11 years ago, after a chance meeting at Smart & Final. “In 2010, there was a young man named Destiny Ouamu,” Bennett said. “He always used to come in here. I saw him at Smart & Final one day and he had boxes of candy in his hands.” Ouamu was accepted to UC Berkeley and intended to sell candy at school to raise tuition funds. “At that moment, I knew I was going to do something. It really started because of Destiny saying he needed to raise some money to go to college.” Bennett said. “That’s why I decided to start the scholarship program.” Usually, Bennett selects the candidates from the pool of students he gets to know at the shop, sometimes over the course of years. “They’re usually supporters of Perry’s Joint. So, I’ve always felt this place wouldn’t be here without the support of the community and the kids. Let me give back to the kids somehow, because part of the reason I’m here is because of them,” Bennett said. Last year, he chose three recipients and with the addition of a GoFundMe option on his website, he raised over $15,000 for the scholarships.

Perry’s Joint’s 11th college scholarship fundraiser is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14. The GoFundMe portal will return via the shop’s website. Last year was challenging for the students, all of whom missed their prom and couldn’t attend college classes in-person. Bennett found it challenging to select deserving students without regular visits to the store. “Because of COVID, things have changed a little, because the kids didn’t come in all last year,” Bennett said. “Normally it’s a real personal thing. They come in and I’ll talk to them. I can see how they relate to their friends. But I wasn’t able to do that this year. So, I reached out to Principal (Lawton) Gray and also the softball coach, who has always been a big supporter of mine.” He asked them to recommend students. “So, now I have four amazing students,” Bennett added. After deliberations, Bennett chose John Muir High School graduates Joanna “Frazzle” Bendy, Tia Reed, Selena Rodriguez and Dylan Wilson. “We wanted kids who could not only represent themselves and represent the school and the community but could also continue the legacy of doing something for the community,” Bennett said. “Because that’s what this is about. We can all do something.” On Aug. 14, Perry’s Joint’s menu will be largely limited to hot dogs and sandwiches. There are seven hot dog options priced between $5 and $6. They include regional variations like The Chicago, with tomato, pickle, mustard and celery salt; The New York, with onion, sauerkraut and mustard; and The Detroit, with chili, onion and mustard. The sandwiches are grouped in two jazz-themed lists The Straight Ahead sandwiches and Perry’s fusion sandwiches. The former list includes fresh takes on turkey, roast beef and pastrami, as well as chicken, tuna and egg salad. They’re all priced under $10 and are served on a choice of fresh bread. However, it’s the fusion list where Perry really jams. These sandwiches go beyond traditional deli combinations. “The Guru” ($12) has been well-cited locally with critical plaudits. It’s a take on hot pastrami and turkey with tomato, lettuce, onion, pickles and pepperoncini, all dressed with mustard and mayonnaise. Regulars in the know go for the chef ’s special, a formerly off-menu secret, with hot turkey and chicken salad. After the dust settles on the fundraiser, Bennett and his wife, Melanie, head off to the East Coast to drop their own two children at college. Their son, Perry Morrel Bennett is transferring from PCC to Morgan State University in Baltimore to study computer science. Daughter Hannah Virginia begins as a freshman at Temple University in Philadelphia to pursue a degree in architecture. Both are proud graduates of John Muir High School, as well as former employees at Perry’s Joint. The latest news and a still-unfolding story at Perry’s Joint is the impending opening of an Altadena location. Having secured the corner storefront on Lake Avenue and Mariposa Street earlier in the year, Bennett is hoping to begin the buildout of the new space by the end of this month. The opening is projected for December. The charming business strip already includes Amara Kitchen, which is part of a buildings owned by Altadena’s Galloway family. He credits local developer and activist, the late Jaylene Moseley for his ongoing success on Lincoln Avenue. “Jaylene Moseley was an incredible landlord and that’s why I made it,” he said. “I get the same energy from the Galloways. I love the direction of the community and I want to a part of that also.” Bennett said the new outlet will have the same energy. “Everything I do is a little bit like jazz,” Bennett said. “Perry’s Joint is the foundation. I have the foundation, but I improvise as I go. Like a lot of jazz players, they can’t tell you what they’re about to play. Whatever comes out, comes out. The foundation is going to be Perry’s Joint, but the rest of it? I can’t tell you. I honestly don’t know. I kind of live my life that way.”

For the 11th year, owner of Perry’s Joint, Perry Bennett is hosting a scholarship fundrasing day on Saturday, Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to raise funds John Muir High School students’ college tuition. 08.12.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 11

Lucky Bird: Coming home to roost he 700-square-foot Lucky Bird Fried Chicken in Downtown’s bustling Grand Central Market was Chris Dane’s first independent venture as a chef and restaurateur. Following its 2018 opening, it latched onto the fried chicken craze and quickly established itself at the market. It proved to be an effective incubator and a competitive hotbed for young, ambitious and thoroughly talented chefs. The pandemic proved to be challenging, as Dane and his wife, Christine, welcomed twin sons last year. “We had twin boys, a couple of newborn babies,” Dane said. “We shut down three times in 2020. It was really tough for us for a while there. Things started to look pretty bleak.” Five days before their sons turned 1, Christine received a message via LinkedIn from Elise Wetzel. She, along with her husband, Rick, are the masterminds behind the successful Wetzel’s Pretzels chain, and the Blaze Pizza empire. Fried chicken was the Pasadena couple’s latest obsession and Lucky Bird was targeted in their sights. “We had been talking about different concepts,” Elise said. “We thought comfort food — and especially fried chicken — might do quite well in the times we’re in. So, we started doing research on fried chicken and we ate a lot of carryout fried chicken. Clearly, there was one concept — Lucky Bird — that stood out above all the rest.” Prior to contacting the Danes, the Wetzels closed on a building on Jan. 15 on West
Colorado Boulevard that previously housed the Eagle Rock Public House gastropub and the vegetarian bistro Fatty’s. “We wanted a project,” Elise said. “We bought this building. We knew LA would revitalize itself. This virus wasn’t going to be a permanent state and we wanted to be a part of Los Angeles getting back on its feet again. “We felt that we wanted to help open it up. It was very sad to us. So many restaurants had closed that we had loved. So, we said, ‘Let’s get one open.’ So, we bought the building.” That said, the couple’s pandemic boredom inspired the turn, Elise said. “We retired. We sold out,” said Rick, of the sale of their interests in Blaze Pizza in September. “The sale happened in the fall, and then the election was over,” Rick said. “Then it was just boring. We said, ‘We’ve got to go do something.’” “And the city was falling apart,” Elise interjected. Newfound partnership After Elise’s introductory message to Christine, the couples participated in a Zoom call, which sealed the deal. “We went on a blind date and then got married,” Rick said with a laugh. “There’s so much to like. We love the Danes and their story. We just thought it would be a great partnership and they had demonstrated their abilities through GCM

(Grand Central Market),” Elise added. The partnership threw a critical lifeline to the Danes and allowed them to expand Lucky Bird’s menu. They could unveil the results of kitchen experiments brewing during the pandemic. “When we had all this time off in the pandemic, I’d be at home cooking constantly,” Dane said. “I’m constantly trying to make things better. How can we make our chicken better? How can we make this cornbread work? How can we make different sides that might be more appealing to people? I think we’re in a really good spot right now. We took a lot of time and thought about it. We came out the other side with some really great ideas and we’re really excited moving forward with what we have.” The chicken at Lucky Bird is distinguished by its distinctive flavor and lighter crust. It’s brined for eight hours, rests overnight and then is double dredged in light Wondra flour with a buttermilk dip in between. The prepped chicken is then fried in a high-temperature pressure fryer for 8 minutes. Finished with a scattering of lemon zest, this fried chicken is a bird of another feather. The chicken comes in boneless tenders, wings and pieces in various combo platters and sandwich options. Accompanying the orders are choices from an array of housemade dipping sauces. There are also spicy and tofu versions. The GCM Chicken Sammie platter ($10.45) is a sampler of Lucky Bird’s original inspiration. It is a boneless fried chicken breast dressed with coleslaw, pickles and house sauce wedged into a butter bun and served with a choice of eight sides. There are also buckets and family packs. A half-bird bucket ($13.95) includes a whole breast and wing, along with a leg and thigh quarter. There are also value menu items that start with a single jumbo tender and sauce ($3.95). The menu is fully accessible for every type of fried chicken (or tofu) fanatic. The side dishes and dessert offered on the Eagle Rock menu are not found at the Downtown stall. Highlights here include broccoli salad with bacon ($3.50); watermelon and cucumber salad with feta ($3.50); mac and cheese ($3.50) and gluten-free cornbread ($2). The banana cream pudding ($3.95) provides a breezy finish to the chicken. “It’s definitely a fan favorite so far and definitely one of my favorites,” said Dane, a La Canada High School graduate. “We’re also working on a peach cobbler, which should make its way onto the menu in the next week or two.” Dane said he doesn’t expect any further expansions. “I think we’re all agreeing on the point of focusing on this one establishment for now, and the best chicken, the best service and the best atmosphere that we can in this community,” he added. “Once we accomplish that goal, then we’ll start discussing things further from there.” Rick noted this is not a fast-casual concept. “We’ll just see what the bird wants to do,” Rick said. “For us, this is another step out of our comfort zone. It’s just another learning experience.” Elise added, “It’s a wonderful team that we’ve put together here and we’re creating a place with a culture where people feel like family.”

The 1986 classic musical “Little Shop of Horrors” will show at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26.
“Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” will screen at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, stars Max Harwood as Jamie New, a 16-year-old teenager who dreams of becoming a drag queen.
Tribeca Drive-In series returns to Rose Bowl he Tribeca Film Festival has had an outdoor element since its inception 20 years ago. This year, the Tribeca Drive-In Summer Series returned, kicking off July 28. It runs through Aug. 26, thanks to the partnership of Tribeca Enterprises, DoorDash and Rémy Martin. “Last summer when movie theaters were closed, we were thinking about how we could continue to bring movies to audiences,” said Tribeca Festival Director Cara Cusumano. “The idea of drive-ins just felt like something that really worked in the moment and a great way to kind of celebrate the nostalgia of movies. We had such an overwhelming response last year that we decided to come back for year two.” This year’s series blends a mix of classic movies celebrating milestone anniversaries such as “The Princess Diaries” ringing in 20 years and “Moana” celebrating its fifth anniversary, as well as a special trio of Robin Williams films and short films revolving around the closing of the Olympics and music. “We wanted to have a selection of kind of modern classic films that people are always willing to rediscover and maybe share with the next generations and their families,” Cusumano said. “There is one (film) that I am excited about, and it’s called ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ which is a film that is launching here at the drive-in and you can’t see anywhere else yet. It’s about a teenage boy who dreams of becoming a drag queen in his high school. It’s just really joyful and fun and funny and I think everyone will enjoy that kind of special moment of seeing that for the first time outside.” The movies are shown on an LED screen for a maximum of 500 cars at the Rose Bowl Stadium. Tickets are $30 per car and are available at tribecafilm.com. “(Rose Bowl Stadium) is such an iconic space and it has a really dramatic, beautiful presentation,” she said. “Being able to bring in these LED screens and show movies all day with that as the backdrop amplifies the experience of seeing a movie at a drive-in. It really brings back that nostalgic atmosphere of a classic drive-in movie.”
The 2021 Tribeca Drive-In series schedule includes: • Wednesday, Aug. 18: “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” 5:30 p.m.; “Mad Max: Fury Road,” 8:30 p.m. • Thursday, Aug. 19: “Grease,” 5 p.m.; “Get Out,” 8:30 p.m. • Friday, Aug. 20: “Mars Attacks!,” 5:30 p.m.; “Saturday Night Fever,” 8:30 p.m. • Saturday, Aug. 21: “Moana,” 2 p.m.; “AI,” 5 p.m.; “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie,” 8:30 p.m. • Sunday, Aug. 22: “Willow,” 1 p.m.; “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” 5 p.m.; “The Big Lebowski,” 8:30 p.m. • Wednesday, Aug. 25: Mix Tape: Music Shorts, 6:30 p.m.; “Fame,” 8:30 p.m. • Thursday, Aug. 26: “Little Shop of Horrors,” 5:30 p.m.; “Dreamgirls,” 8:30 p.m. “On our final weekend (starting) Aug. 25, we’re doing a music-themed program from this year’s festival along with a whole bunch of music movies like ‘Fame,’ ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and ‘Dream Girls,’ Cusumano said. “We tried to find some fun themes to play to but to generally have it be those evergreen films that remind us why we love to see movies on the big screen.” Some of Cusumano’s top movies that she is looking forward to seeing at the drive-in include “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” that will make a world premiere on Amazon Prime Video on Sept. 17 and “Mars Attacks!” because it is “something that feels like an homage to those classic sci-fi movies and Tim Burton that always play really well in that context.” “(Aug. 19) we have ‘Get Out,’ which is just a personal favorite and again something that just feels like seeing it at the drive-in will be totally different than seeing it at home or in a movie theater,” Cusumano said.

ong gone are the days of the Reggae Splashes that Upstream used to brighten in Old Pasadena and elsewhere. Despite the disappearance of many old haunts, not to mention the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, the band continues to keep area audiences dancing and feeling hopeful. They return to Farnsworth County Park in Altadena on Saturday, Aug. 14. This time last year, Upstream frontman Haile Blackman was philosophically recounting how the pandemic shutdown had caused him to wonder if maybe, suddenly, his performing career was over for good. He expressed gratitude for the career he’s had, and he laughed at how little time it took for him to hop back onstage (even if it was a livestreamed concert in an empty venue with a few crew members and no live audience). But it was still a surreal possibility to contemplate. The son of the late Ras Shorty I —aka Lord Shorty, the prolific father of soca music — Blackman has been performing since he was 12, first with his family in Trinidad and Tobago and then with his own band, which he formed there in 1989 and brought to California in 1991. He needn’t have worried. Upstream’s open-hearted music — with feel-good Caribbean vibes magnified by Blackman’s energetic showmanship and Derek Brewstafari’s steel drums — provided a tonic that fans reached out for throughout the shutdown and loyally responded to in ways that helped the band keep going. Embedded in Upstream’s songs is a persistent music-is-life message celebrating community and connection — virtues that have felt precious and threatened over the past 18 months. They’re no less vital now. Barely two months after Southland stages started reopening, it’s tough for artists to resume their normal summer schedules, but some, like Upstream, are seeking outdoor performance spaces on lounge patios and at festivals, amusement parks and civic concerts such as Saturday’s show. The all-ages, open-air concert in the Farnsworth Park amphitheater is one of the weekly concerts being presented there throughout the summer. Subsequent weekends are slated to feature surf party outfit the Hodads, Fleetwood Mac tribute band Gypsy Dreams, and a series grand finale on Sept. 11 with a performance by Johnny Cash tribute band the Walking Phoenixes.

AN YOUNGE, Brian Jackson JID008 (Jazz Is Dead): HHHH A thoughtful jazz-funk collaboration with Gil Scott-Heron’s longtime bandleader/keyboardist/arranger makes a worthy, generation-spanning addition to Shaheed Muhammad and Younge’s JID series. Drummer Malachi Morehead grounds their instrumental explorations, as Muhammad and Younge’s bass, clarinet, guitar and synthesizer respond to the meditative lines Jackson sets out primarily with alto flute and Fender Rhodes piano. They take some deep journeys, most notably with the Scott-Heron-evoking “Bain de Minuit,” inspired by Jackson’s wife; “Nancy Wilson,” a bittersweet tribute to the late, great jazz/R&B chanteuse; “Baba Ibeji” (an absorbing showcase for Morehead’s snare work); and “Ethiopian Sunshower,” a joyous merging of Afrofunk and jazz. jazzisdead.co CORAL MOONS, Fieldcrest (Space Krafts): HHH½ The Boston rockers’ debut album, clocking in at barely 36 minutes, manages to construct an alluring sonic world of hopes and passions. Working with Lake Street Dive/Steel Wheels producer Sam Kassirer, their dynamic arrangements are stitched with acoustic and electric guitars, brassy horn buttons, silky synths and handclaps, and centered by lead singer Carly Kraft’s quicksilver contralto, which ranges confidently from affirmative rocker “I Feel Alive” through the infectious, high-spirited grooves of “Winnebago” and time-shifting jazz cadences of “Under Control.” RIYL Lake Street Dive, Diane Birch. coralmoons.com CRUZADOS, She’s Automatic (indie): HHH½ Cruzados bassist/co-founder Tony Marsico — the only member of the L.A. rockers’ original ’80s lineup — teams with Little Caesar’s frontman (Ron Young), guitarists (Mark Tremalgia, Loren Molinare) and sometime drummer (Rob Klonel) for this viscerally satisfying return. Young’s vocals are deeper and edgier than Tito Larriva’s, magnifying the grittiness of Marsico’s songs, and appearances by Dave Alvin, John Doe, Jimmy Z, and Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin and David Hidalgo make it a roots-romping party. Highlights: “Long Black Car,” the stomping “Son of the Blues,” “Wing and a Prayer,” “On the Tilt a Whirl,” “Across This Ghost Town.” Release show Aug. 20 at Redwood Bar in Downtown LA. cruzadosband.com EXPLORER TAPES, Explorer Tapes (Omnivore/Warner Records): HHH Shelved by a game of corporate musical chairs, this buoyant, Mike Elizondo-produced pop set is finally receiving its six-years-overdue debut. Attentive listeners may recognize “Texas Time,” co-written by Explorer Tapes keyboardist Drew Erickson and guitarist Max Townsley with Steve Lindsey and Dillon O’Brian, which Keith Urban covered for his “Graffiti U.” The songcraft and handsome production are catchy, bright and smooth — sometimes too smooth (the disco-slick “Change Looks Good on You”). Hopeful tunes such as “Everybody’s Crazy,” “Kids These Days” and “Radio” should appeal to pop fans with a taste for melodic hooks. omnivorerecordings.com
