L
est you think I’m simply a curmudgeonly Santa-phobic crackpot, let me give you some background about why I go on yearly rants about Santa: I was 5 and cute as a Norwegian fairy child: tow-headed, stubborn and prone to extreme displays of merriment or temper. Appropriate for the season, the only moderation I had was while sleeping. It was Christmas Eve and mommy gussied me up to wait for Santa. My dress featured gray, black diaphanous material; flocked dots; a red velveteen belt with accents; and a red satin petticoat. It had kind of a hooker vibe, now that I reflect on it. We lived on a small farm outside of Denver. We had chickens, a few horses and Shad, my beloved German shorthair pointer. My family was not doing well. Daddy had been unemployed for months due to rumors about being a communist. (He wasn’t.) Nonetheless, my parents were house-proud, and they did what they could with very little. The house smelled like pine and roasting meat. “When is Santa coming?” I say. “Soon.” “Why is he coming?” “To bring presents.” “Why?” “Because that’s Christmas.” “Why?” “Just wait.” “Where’s Daddy?” Crickets. The tree was lit up with bubble lights. My two sisters, who were also dressed up, sat on the couch. Alane, the eldest, was bored; Mary, the middle daughter, focused like a shark on the chum of gifts already under the tree. She liked presents. Mommy was herding us around to get pictures of “the girls” in front of the tree. “Smile, girls.” “When is Santa coming?” “Soon.” Then hark! The yonder sleigh bells did ring. “Can you hear that, Ellen? That’s Santa! He’s outside. He’s parking his reindeer.” “Ho, ho, ho!!! Merry Christmas! Ho, ho, ho!” The bells are now in the house. Those awful bells. The soundtrack of my horror. The door to our living room and eating area opened, and in walked the ugliest, saddest, scariest creature I’d ever seen. It wore nasty, stretched-out and faded red long johns, a phony beard, a flaccid red pointy cap, some kind of belt and those horrible sleigh bells. As soon as he showed his face, I let out a bone-shattering scream. Think Drew Barrymore in “E.T.” Never one to hide behind my mother, I launched myself at this monster that had breached our home. “Where’s my Daddy? Where’s my Daddy? Where’s my Daddy?” I screamed. I beat on his chest. My mother is frozen while my sisters convulse with hysterical laughter. “Santa” runs out, jingling all the way with those horrible bells. Then he comes back, throws the bag into the room and runs back out again. This gives you a little taste of why I find Santa such a wretched symbol of Christmas. Now, as an older person, I attack him whenever I can. You’d be surprised at how many people tell me, “I thought I was the only one who hates Santa.” Trust me: You are not alone. Attention, grown-ups! If your child is creeped out by Santa, do not force them to take a picture with him. If you do, I will haunt you in my own version of the Ghost of both Christmas Present and Future. News flash: Not all children think Santa is wonderful. Just think for a minute — stand back and let go of your emotional attachment — what this fellow represents without all of the sentimental baggage. As a naughty-andnice control freak, who is he to be judging good and bad? That “jolly” red face and nose? These are checklist items for chronic alcoholism. And then there are the mixed messages from my parents, who exhorted me to never, ever talk to strangers. But Santa was the strangest person I’d ever met, let alone spoken with. So not only was I thrust upon his lap so he could breathe
his nasty, alcohol-laced breath on me, I was supposed to let him know what my fondest wishes were? Yikes! And those nasty whiskers and his hands on me while bouncing me and taking pictures? Eeewww. Don’t get me started about his human rights abuses! He enslaves elves that work in his factory. As our family were die-hard union supporters, I felt terrible accepting toys knowing they were made on the backs of children. Organize now! I say, “Instead of ‘ho, ho, ho!’ say ‘no, no, no!’ to Santa.” Really. What does he teach us by example? That Christmas is all about gifts and delivery; it’s OK for little children to sit on the lap of a man they’ve never met if he’s in a shopping mall; it’s OK to be loud and rude if you have a big bag of gifts; breaking into homes through backdoors or fireplaces is exemplary behavior; being dangerously obese gets you on cards, decorations and in movies; it’s OK to smuggle expensive items in bags; public drunkenness and smoking is acceptable; it’s OK to exploit short people in workshops, etc. So, my friends, I come by my Santa contempt honestly. Join my Santa Stinks Facebook group to join other Bah-Humbuggers and Bah Humbug with the best! Other than that? Merry Christmas… soon. he city of Pasadena will implement a City Prosecutor Community Mediation Program designed to help tackle community disputes, including conflicts between landlords and tenants, employers and employees, merchants and consumers, and neighbors as well as issues related to business, school, family and homelessness. “We’ve noticed an uptick in community disputes going on here in Pasadena, with some of those disputes eventually rising to the level of police and court involvement,” Chief Assistant City Prosecutor Michael Dowd said. “We decided to see if there was a way in which we could interact with the community to be able to keep these types of matters from escalating to where the police and courts end up getting involved, either criminally or civilly, and that one way to do this was to get involved in those disputes at an early stage so that we could attempt to resolve those disputes before they went any further.” The public can visit the city attorney and city prosecutor webpage at cityofpasadena. net/city-attorney and find the program’s description, along with a link that will allow them to document an ongoing dispute. Then, it will then be relayed to the city prosecutor’s office. When the mediation process begins, the office will facilitate communication between the parties to work toward a mutually agreeable solution. “Right now, the police utilize a lot of their resources answering calls about neighborhood disputes that have yet not risen to the level of criminal action,” he said. “They also utilize a vast amount of resources in dealing with these disputes if they do eventually rise to the level of criminal action. If our program can get in there at the beginning of the dispute, that would reduce the necessity of the police going out for these disputes before they become crimes, reduce the amount of resources the police have to use once they do become crimes, and will allow the police to actually use their resources to go out and stop what we would all consider to be very important criminal activity, especially violent criminal activity.” The city’s mediation program was modeled after a similar program in Los Angeles city. Pasadena officials started the program due to a significant increase in city disputes, specifically concerning property usage, quality of life in relation to homeless activity, eviction and domestic incidents. The Pasadena mediation program differs from the one in Los Angeles, however, because the attorneys from the city prosecutor’s office will act as the program mediators. “The ultimate goal of the program is to foster better relationships within our neighborhoods and see quality of life improve,” Dowd explained. “If, in fact, we can foster better relationships between members of the public, that has the effect of branching out to the community as a whole and restoring some peace and harmony. This is a new program for the city, but we believe that it is a step in the right direction to promoting a better community.”

igh Point Academy, a K-8 independent school in Pasadena, has appointed Joseph Campanella as its next head of school. Campanella succeeds interim head of school Dr. Tim Burns and the previous headmaster of seven years, Gary Stern. He will assume the role on July 1. “Joey’s experience and interests are a compelling match with the responsibilities desired for the High Point Academy head of school position, High Point Academy’s community culture, and its focus on academic excellence and the development of well-rounded students,” said Juan Gomez-Novy, chair, High Point Academy Board of Trustees. Campanella joins High Point Academy after 20 years at The Wesley School, a kindergarten to eighth grade independent school in North Hollywood, where he serves as the associate head of school and middle school division head. At The Wesley School, Campanella is responsible for managing the school’s day-to-day operations. He is also responsible for all middle school programs, including supervising 40 faculty members, supporting and coordinating faculty professional development, overseeing curriculum, monitoring the budget, scheduling, addressing all parent and faculty concerns, and leading high school placement. While at Wesley, he spearheaded educational initiatives, including creating a middle school honor code, expanding the middle school advisory program, growing the middle school enrichment and elective program, and introducing and leading the annual eighth grade trip to London. During his tenure, Campanella assisted with fundraising and served on a wide range of board committees, including curriculum; technology; admissions; long-range planning; school expansion; professional development; and diversity, equity and inclusion. Campanella earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Columbia University and a Master of Education in educational leadership from Concordia University. Campanella participated in the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Fellowship for Aspiring Heads in 2020 and 2021. Campanella’s appointment concludes an extensive national search by a nine-member High Point Academy Search Committee and executive search firm, Morris & Berger. “High Point Academy is a wonderful and vibrant school filled with happy students, passionate teachers and supportive parents,” Campanella said. “The strength and closeness of the school community resonates deeply with me, and I am excited to be a part of leading High Point into a very bright future.” Campanella will be High Point Academy’s ninth head of school.

Jade Marlin hosting Christmas drive at CVS
J
By Christopher Floch Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer
ade Marlin says the CVS parking lot at 900 Lake Avenue will be his Christmas experience with KTLA trucks and a visit by Pasadena Councilman Tyrone Hampton. The designer, who lives to give back to the children of Pasadena, is collecting and distributing toys from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, for about 300 to 500 kids. “The goal is to get as many people out as possible,” Marlin said. “The vibe is positivity.” Marlin shares with the city through his nonprofit, the Jade Marlin Foundation. It has developed programs and initiatives that invest in the success and sustainability of the community. The foundation offers specialized hybrid classes to support the community to become self-sufficient and to help enhance their employability in the work world. Marlin prides himself on having comprehensive programs with dynamic instruction and an engaging curriculum. Marlin said working with CVS came easily. He reached out to the store and staff responded immediately with a yes. A nearby tree lot has donated a “towering” Christmas tree for which children can make decorations and photograph. “Bringing the community together and letting the kids know there are resources for the kids and their families is vital,” said Melissa Ledesma, Marlin’s HR manager.
Alhambra PD mourns the loss of Cpl. Dominguez

By Luke Netzley Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor
he Alhambra Police Department is mourning the death of Cpl. Sally Dominguez, who lost her battle with cancer on Dec. 5, surrounded by family and co-workers at her home in Monrovia. Dominguez was born Dec. 6, 1976, in Sacramento and grew up in Elk Grove. In 2009, she earned her Juris Doctor from Lincoln Law School and joined the Alhambra Police Department six years later, where she achieved the rank of corporal in 2019. During a routine gallstone removal procedure in March, her surgeon discovered a large mass and she was diagnosed with stage 4 gallbladder cancer. “Sally was a fighter and never one to quit,” the Alhambra Police Department wrote in a statement on Dec. 5. “When first diagnosed, Sally refused to accept a less strenuous assignment and continued working weekend nights in patrol. Sally also understood the importance of mental health wellness for first responders and was spearheading a project designed to bring a mental health wellness app to first-responder fingertips.” Aside from her dedication to the Alhambra Police Department, Dominguez served as a field training officer and member of the honor guard. Her passion for fitness also led her to become one of the police department’s use of force instructors as well as a Police Explorer adviser, helping to mentor and foster the growth of future generations. “Sally will be remembered for many things, her smile and friendly demeanor, drive and work product, compassion for all people, and love for life,” the statement continued. “Sally may have only stood 5-foot-2, but she had the heart of a giant.”

Season’s Screamings includes the “Hall of Yuletide Spirits,” “A Christmas Scarol,” “The Holiday Haunt with No Name…Yet,” “Gingerbread House of Horrors” and more.
Season’s Screamings highlights darker holiday themes he winter holidays can sometimes seem a bit too bright and cheery. Season’s Screamings — set for Friday, Dec. 17, to Sunday, Dec. 19, at the Pasadena Convention Center — tempers that with its event. Co-founded by David Markland of Black Cat Orange, Season’s Screamings highlights the talents of local scarers, who create haunts and yard displays for it. “There is this great community of Halloween fans and haunters,” Markland said. “We reached out to them and asked if they wanted to do something for it, and the response was good. They’re putting in all of this effort to create these amazing displays and haunts that will only be up for a weekend.” Markland, who also co-founded Midsummer Scream, has loved Halloween since he was a kid. He was inspired to host his own spooky events after writing about LA ghost stories and haunted attractions for the site CreepyLA. During the holiday event, haunts and yard displays will help to create an eerie feeling inside the “Hall of Yuletide Spirits.” “A Christmas Scarol” follows a hostly Dickens theme, naturally. “The Holiday Haunt with No Name…Yet” presents a haunted Celtic graveyard theme. Inside Fear Farm’s “Gingerbread House of Horrors,” the Christmas season takes a sinister turn with rotting candy and monsters. As part of “Reichland Asylum Presents: A Very Matthias Christmas,” longtime asylum
resident Matthias looks to bring Christmas to the children of Ward D and replace Santa. The Casa Calaveras haunt “Holiday Fiesta” gives a glimpse into a holiday celebration of undead couple Jose and Gloria. Autograph sessions are scheduled as well. Zach Galligan, who played Billy in “Gremlins,” and Butch Patrick, Eddie Munster in the TV show “The Munsters,” will meet with fans. The Friday night sees the “Poltergeists and Paramours Christmas Spooktacular,” which combines a fashion show, dance performances and live singing. Saturday, guests can hear from animatronics expert Garner Holt, who helped create Disneyland’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”-themed Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay. That night, Peepshow Menagerie, an LA-based burlesque troupe, will put on an adultthemed show called “Island of Misfit Tease.” The convention also has horror trivia, a talk on Krampus, and a presentation on the Yule tradition of telling ghost stories. Inside the convention hall, around 200 vendors will sell holiday and horror-themed items, including props and décor, apparel and artwork. As part of a special Sunday talk, director Kirk Thatcher will give a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the TV special “Muppets Haunted Mansion.”

At the center of the event are the haunts and yard displays by the likes of the haunter collective CalHauntS. Markland said the haunters have years of experience creating displays and professional-level props and sets. “The detail can vary from haunt to haunt, but even the home haunts are theme-park level typically, with their skills and how they build stuff and decorate stuff,” Markland said. Markland said from the beginning, Season’s Screamings has supported local creatives. “It’s really a community-built event and focus,” Markland said. “We do have some celebrities, but we really like to focus on the makers.” Haunters like Sean Burke of The Dreich Society and Cameron McGuinness of Insane Haunt Productions started creating haunts as teenagers. The Dreich Society hosts home haunts each year in Burke’s parents’ backyard in Ontario. In the eighth grade, Burke assembled a small-scale haunt on his parents’ patio using duct and caution tape, cardboard, trash bags and newspaper. He and his team moved on to those themed around a greaser car wreck, pirates, the TV show “Supernatural,” Bloody Mary, 1980s horror movies, a séance and the film “Krampus.” “One thing we always agreed to as a group was we wanted to break the mold and not do what we would call the ‘stereotypical themes,’” Burke said. “Everybody does clowns. Everybody does hillbillies with chainsaws. Everybody does vampires. We told ourselves if we were going to do something like that, it might as well be unique.” Burke says they are meant to be scary and humorous. “One thing we try to do is we try to have people laugh as they get scared,” Burke says. The group’s “Holiday Fear” haunt combines popular holiday tropes with themes from the film “Die Hard.” In it, Jack Frost and a group of disgruntled blue-collar elves have taken over Santa’s workshop. “It’s relevant. It’s funny,” Burke said. “It pays homage to ‘Die Hard’ and Christmas tradition things. We are even going to have a character in there who is going to look like John McClane from ‘Die Hard’ but as an elf.” Annually, they brainstorm shortly after Halloween. “That’s one of my favorite parts of being a haunter, just sitting back and letting the creativity flow and just going off of different ideas,” Burke said. While some haunters work as a team, others such as McGuinness work mostly on their own with help from family members and scare actors. Each Halloween, McGuinness hosts themed haunts in his dad’s driveway in Santa Clarita. Along with presenting a haunt and selling his sliding and sparking gear, McGuinness plans to launch his new open market horror website, Howl-o-World, during this year’s convention. The 20-year-old McGuinness is the mastermind behind “The Cabin,” a four-room, two-hallway haunt. It is themed around a maniac killing teens at a cabin party. The haunter uses props such as a staticky TV, a table with cards, luggage, his mom’s Christmas trees, sleeping bags and half-empty cups to create a cabin party/Christmas vibe. He was inspired by a Lake Tahoe cabin he visited with his parents growing up. “Nothing inside it is updated. So, it has this whole vintage feel that I like,” McGuinness said. His journey with haunts started at age 13, when he and his dad decorated their yard with ears of corn from a local pumpkin patch. At 15, he created walkways from plastic tarps in his parents’ garage. A year later, he assembled a more elaborate haunt — a laboratory-themed maze, complete with walls and black and strobe light effects. This year, McGuinness will use effects like ankle tickler air blasters that create the sensation of being touched, as well as synchronized blinking lights and music. He recreates smells such as an outdoor campfire. As a young haunter, McGuinness saves money where he can, often modifying pieces purchased at thrift stores. “You either just throw it in or you detail it and put paint on it to make it look older. Or you put cobwebs on it or blood on it,” McGuinness said. “You just get a bunch of crap, a bunch of vintage, old stuff. I say ‘crap’ because I was just moving all of my stuff that I’m not using from my maze to a shed, and I felt like I’m a hoarder. You are trying to set the mood, and you need these props, no matter how miniscule they are, to create that illusion.”

College Women’s Club of Pasadena recalls 100 years By Annika Tomlin Pasadena Weekly Staff Writer
T
he College Women’s Club of Pasadena persevered through the Great Depression, World War II and several other country- and world-defining moments to reach its centennial celebration. The club recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. “This organization was created by a group of Cal Tech wives of the professors not even one year after women got the right to vote,” said Kathy LaRussa, the club’s publicity and social media chair. “Their goal was to have a club where they could meet and discuss intelligent topics, educate themselves further, and raise a little money so that they could offer scholarships to local young women in local universities and colleges.” A three-year club member, LaRussa said the scholarships are the “heart and soul” of the organization. “We, in partnership with Pasadena Community Foundation, have gone from a $100 fund to an over $2 million endowment, and we are still dedicated to awarding scholarships to young women,” LaRussa said. The club initially partnered with Pasadena Community Foundation in 2016. “That was really a significant event for us because their investment support really kick-started our financial growth to give us this base,” LaRussa said. “A $2 million endowment is a solid endowment. At this point, we have given out $1.1 million to 600 recipients since we were founded in 1921.” During the past century, the organization has seen a slew of political and social changes all while staying true to its cause: encouraging and supporting women’s educational endeavors.
“The organization is still here because the mission has not changed in 100 years,” said Rozanne Child, current club president in a video celebrating the club’s 100 years. “The women who started the College Women’s Club valued education, and they knew how important it was.” College Women’s Club of Pasadena celebrated its centennial on Nov. 7 at the Altadena Town and Country Club with more than 90 guests and dignitaries from the surrounding colleges and universities. The celebration included a tea service along with archival photos and documents woven into a 12-minute video. “We had been working for 18 months on the creation of a video that talks about the club,” LaRussa said. The club acquired handwritten minutes, documents and photos from the Pasadena Historical Society to create the video. “We screened that for our members, and they were very thrilled by it and very touched by it,” LaRussa said. During the video, past club president Ann Kimball said, “When (the club) was started, it was a really noble mission because education was not considered that important. These women decided that women deserve the same advantages that the men have had. “I think it continues today. It’s not a completely equal society by any means, but the mission of this group is to help women.” College Women’s Club of Pasadena over the years “In 1923, our president was Greta Millikan,” LaRussa said. “Her husband was the president of Cal Tech and he won a Nobel Prize the same year that she was president. “That (same year) was when they voted to start the actual $100 amount in the scholarship fund to move forward.” In celebration of the 100 years, LaRussa said members perused boxes of archival documents. “Dec. 8, 1941, we held a meeting the morning after Pearl Harbor, and we have the minutes from that meeting, which opened by singing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’” LaRussa said. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the club halted in-person meetings in 2020 and only resumed outdoor or online meetings this year. They struggled to find a location for their meetings because their former location, the Blinn House, was being renovated. “Another challenge is that we are trying hard to increase our membership because it has dwindled,” LaRussa admitted. “Now we also offer to our scholarship winners a year’s free membership into the club. “We want to get young members to carry on the traditions of over 100 years of supporting women in education. We are trying to grow and change with the times to attract younger members and get our name out there as an organization that helps the community and does good things.” Membership information is available at the club’s website. The dues are $5 to join and a $60 yearly due that goes directly to the scholarship foundation. “We have no other requirements, just that they have a good time with us and hopefully come to our meetings and being on the board or volunteering whatever part of the organization they might be interested in,” LaRussa said. “Our scholarship committee is a very important part of our club. So, we are always looking for volunteers because we have a process that we go through with the Pasadena Community Foundation of a rubric that helps us vet scholarship candidates.” LaRussa said during her first meeting, the group awarded scholarships. She found the winners’ stories “mind-boggling.” “We had one winner who has four children — one is a special needs child — is working full time, cares for her own elderly parents and is still going back to school to get her Ph.D.,” LaRussa said. “It just amazes me how important education is that I agree with that philosophy. “Women just need support from other women at times who’ve been through it. Who knows what it is to take care of a house, take care of kids, work a job and still push forward to grow and to educate yourself and to better yourself. Every one of our scholarship winners has a story just like that at some level.” LaRussa said she enjoys hearing the other members’ stories, which include working a doughnut dolly in the Vietnam War, being in the Peace Corps and rallying for political and social change in the 1960s. “Sometimes as women age as we all age, we stop looking at them as people and we don’t look at who they were and what they contributed to the world,” LaRussa said. “This organization allows us to encourage young women but also appreciate the women in our club for who they are and the differences that they’ve made.”

Author compares Eddie Van Halen to Les Paul By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Editor
J
ournalists Brad Tolinski and Chris Gill knew Eddie Van Halen, having interviewed the late Van Halen guitarist over the course of the musician’s career. Now, the two share their conversations with the legendary guitar player in “Eruption: Conversations with Eddie Van Halen.” “This is the first chance I had to step back and look at the entire story,” Tolinski said. “So much of it made so much more sense to me now. However, I curse the fact that I didn’t do this while he was still alive. I would have loved to have had the chance to talk to him about bigger observations.” In “Eruption,” Tolinski and Gill offer an oral history of Van Halen, who died of cancer on Oct. 6, 2020. Since the band Van Halen released its self-titled album in 1978, the axman was hailed as an icon.

Eddie Van Halen in his recording studio, 5150 Studios, located in the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles in 1991.
“Eruption” is based on more than 50 hours of unreleased interviews Tolinski and Gill recorded with Van Halen over the years, most of them conducted at the legendary 5150 Studios at his home in Los Angeles. “Eruption” is drawn from those talks as well as conversations with family, friends and colleagues, including other major guitarists like Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Steve Vai and Steve Lukather (Toto, Michael Jackson, Ringo Starr, Elton John). “I was thrilled to have the opportunity to write this,” Tolinski said. “I’ve known Ed more professionally than personally. I did know both sides of him. I saw him pretty regularly a few times every year. I had this personal/professional relationship with him. Chris Gill and I thought we were qualified to tell his story in a more definitive way.” “Eruption” chronicles the highs and lows of the rock legend. In addition to discussing his greatest triumphs as a groundbreaking musician — including a dive into Van Halen’s masterpiece “1984” and the story behind playing on Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” — the book looks at his early struggles as a young Dutch immigrant unable to speak English. That resulted in lifelong issues with social anxiety and later problems with alcohol and cocaine. Van Halen and his older brother Al and their parents moved to Pasadena in 1962 when Eddie was 7 years old, with less than $50, suitcases and a piano. During the nine-day boat ride over, Eddie and Al played piano for spare change. The boys attended a segregated school in Pasadena and were ostracized because they knew little English. “Eruption” shares his penchant for expressing himself through piano, maintaining a rigorous practice schedule under the watchful eye of his mother. At the age of 12, he applied the same diligence to learning the electric guitar, spending countless hours locked in his bedroom developing the technique. The authors are guitar players, so, Tolinski said, they understood Van Halen’s passion. Tolinski was the editor-in-chief of Guitar World magazine for 25 years. Meanwhile, Gill served as editor-in-chief of Guitar Aficionado. A suburban Detroit native, Tolinski moved from Manhattan to a friend’s summer place in Cape Cod during the pandemic. He spent the time writing “Eruption,” calling it a “traditional old-school writer’s retreat.” Tolinski said “Eruption” is different from other Van Halen books. “A lot of these super gossipy books about Ed and about Van Halen have come out, about all the arguments and struggles within the band,” he said. “Most of the things I read sort of missed the point to some degree. He was arguably the most innovative guitarist since Jimi Hendrix and one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.” To skip that point and only cover the turbulence within the band, he added, is pointless. “It was really when I came to Guitar World that I paid a lot of attention to what Ed was doing,” he said. “It turned into a personal relationship. The one thing he liked about Chris and I was, while we certainly respected him as a guitar player, we didn’t worship him as a god. He saw us as a contemporary. We spoke to him as a musician, as a human being. I think he enjoyed that.” Like many, Tolinski sees Van Halen as one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. Above and beyond that, he added, “he was important as an inventor. His Frankenstein guitar was made part of the permanent collection at the Smithsonian for its innovation. “He’s been this figure, this smiling guy and all-American kid in these videos. But there’s a lot of depth to what Edward brought to this world. He was the Les Paul of the modern era.”

Award-winning artist Jorge Gutierrez unveils his new art collection, “Luchapolis.”

outh Pasadena’s Republic of Lucha has unveiled its seventh and final gallery show of 2021, “Luchapolis,” which pays homage to the art of lucha libre. “There’s been a relationship with masks throughout history in Mexico, going all the way back to the Mayans,” said Jorge Gutierrez, the animator, director and artist behind the “Luchapolis” exhibit. “I think the idea that anybody can put on a mask and become a hero or a villain is very universal but also very Mexican.” Born in Mexico City, Gutierrez has admired the world of lucha libre since he was a child. After graduating from CalArts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in experiential animation, he wrote and directed the nine-episode animated miniseries “Maya and the Three” for Netflix, the Emmy- and Annie-award-winning “El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera” for Nickelodeon, and a host of other praised bodies of work. “I always say, especially in animation, that 99% of children draw, and the artists are the ones who didn’t stop. As a kid, I just never stopped,” he said. Gutierrez has often sought inspiration for his art from the cultural and historical influences and icons who have mesmerized him throughout his life, and the “Luchapolis” show is no different. “One of the things I love about the gallery is that you are getting a glimpse into this very intense, crazy world of Mexican wrestling,” he explained. “Lucha means fight, and libre is free. It’s basically the free fight, but what it really means is fighting to be free. “The Aztecs had a belief that it mattered what you did in your life, but it also mattered how you died. In the tradition of Mexican wrestling, a lot of wrestlers have died in the ring. They’re like these tragic gladiators, and so I love this idea that if you died in the ring, you will be remembered forever and get to live forever in stories.” While the exhibition presents a diverse myriad colorful representations showcas-
ing the lucha libre world, Gutierrez explained that one of his favorite pieces from the collection is the depiction of a skull with two wrestler masks within the eyes. The work is titled “Lucho,” which translates to “he fought.” “Even after their death, their mask lives on and their ideals live on,” he said. While the concept of death is ever-present in lucha libre, so too is life, as seen in one of Gutierrez’s other favorite pieces that celebrate the vibrant energy that surrounds wrestling entertainment. The work is titled “El Barto” and depicts a tattooed rendition of Bart Simpson as if he were in a raucous crowd of fans. “A lot of people think about Mexican wrestling thinking it might be violent, but at the end of the day wrestling is theater for the masses,” he said. “It’s really fun, you know, and it’s very weird, but fighting brings the world together.” On opening night, fans perused the collection, an ode to the mythology and heroism of the luchadores. “My favorite thing about Mexican wrestling is this idea that these wrestlers are real,” he said. “They’re real people. So, while you can see Spider-Man and Batman in a movie, you can see these guys in movies and they’re real people, too. I was told, ‘Hey, be careful because your teacher might be a lucho or the bus driver might be a lucho or the taxi driver… you don’t know.’ Secret identities are everywhere, so I grew up thinking, ‘Oh, my God, I live in a city full of heroes and villains that walk amongst us.’ And I think that’s very unique.”

ather of the Bride” was released on Dec. 20, 1991, and was a smash at the box office, raking in nearly $90 million on an estimated $20 million budget. For some, it was a story all to familiar; for others it was a cautionary tale of the overwhelming familial stresses that might be on the horizon. While the headlining cast of Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Martin Short was undoubtedly a driving force behind the film’s success, the unexpected breakout star of “Father of the Bride” was the Pasadena location used as the home of George Banks (Steve Martin) and his family. Arguably, it’s been among the top five most visited movie houses in Los Angeles over the last 30 years. “Father of the Bride” director Charles Shyer said that none of his other films feature a location that made an impact like the Banks house. “That location is a character in the movie. The house meant so much to (George), and that translates to an audience, and they felt it was the fulcrum of his life, basically,” Shyer said. “We always felt that George Banks’ dream was to be buried in the backyard.” The warm and idyllic feeling of the home that Shyer shared with his writing and producing partner, and then-wife, filmmaker Nancy Meyers, was a jumping off point for the emotional touchstones they wanted the Banks house to embody. “We didn’t want anything to be of the moment. Even the eccentric way that Franck (Martin Short) dresses, we wanted it to transcend, that it could last. We just wanted ‘classic,’” Shyer said. The film’s location manager, Rick Dallago, recalled there wasn’t a lot of discussion about the specific aesthetic of the house, but there was one directive: It should a home in which everyone would want to live. The house from the original “Father of the Bride” (1950), starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor, was also a source of inspiration. In that version, the Banks family lives in a white, clapboard-style house. Dallago said, “I dug through the MGM archives and got the address of the actual house that they used in the first movie in 1950.” The house was still beautiful, but it was in Beverly Hills, which was a hassle for filming. He set out to find an all-American home based on the one from the original film. Dallago said, frankly, “I copied that house.” When “Father of the Bride” was made, location services were in their infancy, Dallago said. The few that existed mostly represented large mansions. So, for about a month, Dallago drove all over LA, zigzagging between streets, and leaving notes at locations that seemed promising. He photographed about 100 houses. Dallago felt an enormous amount of pressure to find the Banks house. “I’m calling into the office for messages and they’re like, ‘Charles wants to know

if you found the house yet.’” The design of the interior, which was built on a soundstage, couldn’t be finalized until the exterior was chosen. “There was a standby art department crew just waiting for me to deliver ‘the baby,’” Dallago said. A house in Studio City was considered, but it was a Pasadena home that ultimately won out. “I think it was evident that when we saw the picture of the house on El Molino (Avenue), that was it. It was like a light bulb went off above everyone’s head. I think it was an instant click,” Dallago said. The owners of the 1913 clapboard-style Colonial Revival near the corner of Arden Road had previously been approached about filming but had declined. Dallago, however, says that Steve Martin’s star power helped to secure the house and other locations that appeared in the film. Shyer said the street was desirable, too. “There was this kind of architectural consistency in the houses, which felt, to us, a little bit like stepping back in time, in a good way.” “Once you go stand in that street and you see the canopy of those camphor trees, that’s kind of gorgeous, too,” Dallago said. “And the thing about that canopy, I think it helped a lot with filming because it sort of controlled the light.” Greenery and landscaping were added; a curvilinear brick walkway was laid into the front yard; false dormer windows were affixed to the roof for the purpose of matching the attic scene in which George tries on his old tuxedo. The filmmakers were able to springboard off the house to land at a few locations in very close proximity. The El Molino house wasn’t the only practical location used for the Banks home. The driveway in which George and his daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) play basketball was filmed about 5 minutes away at a house in Alhambra. Dallago said the factory for George’s sneaker company, Side Kicks, was an environment production wanted to avoid building, but finding a suitable warehouse space was “a nightmare.” The production came very close to shooting in the Vans factory in Orange County, but it wasn’t ideal. “It was dismal. It wasn’t like a Disney version of what a sneaker factory is. It was real. It was normal. It was like ‘Norma Rae,’” Dallago said with a laugh. “It had to fit in with the tone of the movie. … This is a heightened reality, and I knew that going in.” Instead, the set was created inside the historic Home Laundry building at 432 S. Arroyo Parkway in Pasadena. The brick Tudor revival-style building was constructed in 1922 for a laundry company co-founded by Arnold J. Bertonneau, who conceived the East-West Game, later rebranded as the Rose Bowl Game. The building, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, was empty when Dallago found it. Later, a Thomasville furniture store occupied the space. Today, it’s the Pasadena location of Snyder Diamond, an independent, family-owned, retailer of premium kitchen, bathroom and outdoor appliances. For a scene between George and Annie’s heartbroken fiancé Bryan (George Newbern), the setup is right out of 1940s or 1950s film noir. The rainy nighttime scene begins with a shot of the bar’s vertical neon sign — Delacey’s Club 41. Inside, George, dressed in a beige trench coat, sits at the dimly lit, mahogany bar trying to comfort Bryan. More recently, the White Horse Lounge had occupied the space at 41 S. De Lacey Avenue. Though the business’s website is still live, the phone number is disconnected and the shuttered restaurant on De Lacey, just south of Colorado Boulevard, is currently for lease. After the release of “Father of the Bride,” Shyer got wind of the fact that the house was gaining traction among fans. He said, “You don’t know what’s going to click and what’s not, but that house definitely had resonance. People drive by it all the time.” When “Father of the Bride Part II” (1995) went into production, the filmmakers needed the El Molino house, as it became a bona fide character. After a bit of nerve-racking uncertainty, Dallago was delighted to learn the homeowners enjoyed the notoriety they received from the first film. “They actually kind of branded it,” he says. “They sent out their Christmas card with ‘Father of the Bride’ on it. It was basically like they owned it.” The filmmakers were welcomed back due, in large part, to the courtesy extended to the neighborhood during the making of the first film. “I knew every dog’s name, I knew every person’s name, and I knew every kid’s name. I spent time up there getting to know the community,” Dallago said. “I didn’t really pay out a lot of money. We didn’t buy out the neighborhood. It was all done on public relations. … It was a little more complicated on ‘Father of the Bride Part II,’ but most of it was still goodwill and people remembered me.” Last year, the Zoom-inspired Netflix short, “Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish),” written and directed by Meyers and executive produced by Shyer, featured a brief shot of the house. However, Shyer hasn’t been back since making part two. “I can’t look at my old movies, so to go to one of the houses, it would probably make me sad,” he said. “When I look at my movies, I only see everything I did wrong. With the house, it would just make me kind of feel bittersweet a little bit, which, you know, I’ve got enough of that in my life already,” said Shyer, laughing.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call or visit this Internet Web site www.ndscorp.com/sales, using the file number assigned to this case 19-20102-SPCA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
