What is making California streets unsafe? Electric scooter drivers darting in and out of traffic, cyclists doing as they please and ignoring every single rule of the road and sanity, and pedestrians crossing the road while looking AWAY from traffic, or actually stepping off the curb while looking directly at advancing drivers (as happened to me recently in South Pasadena). Automobile drivers are driving more safely, more defensively than ever. Pedestrians, cyclists and scooter riders have become emboldened and totally irresponsible. The answer to this issue is not in structures in the road, further limiting vision or reducing space available to automobile drivers to avoid irresponsible cyclists, pedestrians and scooter drivers. The answer is to return to an ethos that EVERYONE is responsible for their own GD safety! In my teens I raced bicycles. I road raced. I trained in Pasadena and Altadena. I understood that I had a responsibility to myself to not get mangled by a car. Since my heart operation I ride again. I still ride paranoid. Cyclists who dishonor the century-long reputation of the Wheelmen confuse and anger me. Darting in and out of traffic, riding in three rows two abreast at slow speed and crossing and cutting off traffic to make a turn is not only personally unsafe, idiotic and irresponsible, it gives cycling a bad name among the general public. I know this means I am ancient, but I belong to a cadre of cyclists who thought it was our responsibility to add to the sports’ good name, not to do everything possible to tarnish it as often as possible. The idiots on scooters can’t decide if they want to run pedestrians down or want to be in the way of automobiles. This isn’t the fault of the cars, but it is the fault of the morons on the scooters. Since my operation I walk every street in Altadena once a year. If one is vigilant there are no unsafe streets to walk on. If one is a careless idiot, as 80 percent of the pedestrians I see are, there is no safe place. Almost every day as I turn from Lincoln Avenue onto Figueroa there will be a truck or bus parked near the corner.

Every morning an idiot will walk out from between a van, a bus, a truck or SUV with his back turned to the oncoming traffic and saunter diagonally to expose himself to the maximum length of danger, toward All Star Liquor. This insanity started five years ago and is now a freaking tradition. For reasons I cannot comprehend, there are groups of pedestrians working very hard to be run down by automobiles. There is no light, no barricade, no structure that will prevent this level of arrogant stupidity from eventually resulting in injury. ~ STEVE LAMB ALTADENA

A NEW WAY

A political primary is a preliminary election in which the registered voters of a political party nominate candidates for office. The key word here is preliminary. The current system allows small states such as Iowa and New Hampshire (assisted by the media) to award frontrunner status to the victorious candidate. From there, the candidates travel a path determined by which states wants to “leap frog” the other by moving up their primary dates. Candidates are whisked across the country without any real ability to distinguish regional issues from national issues. Consequently, party platforms

are determined by a make-it-upas-you-go approach. If the primary process were organized on a regional basis, candidates would be able to study the regional issues, campaign to confirm those issues and then receive votes based on the solutions they propose. A regional approach would also prevent a premature selection of a front–runner because success in one region certainly would not guarantee success in the next region. This would also further validate the process because each state would still have a say all the way down to the end. Finally, the number of delegates awarded in each state should be determined by the percentage of votes won by each candidate. Accordingly, the political primaries should occur between January and June of each presidential election year. Each of the six regions would be assigned a particular month. A lottery held in June of the previous year would determine which month each region holds its primaries. An example illustrates the format: January Southern (8): AL, AR. KY, LA, MS, TN, VA, WV February Southwestern (9): AZ, CA, CO, HI, NV, NM, OK, TX, UT March Atlantic (8): DE, DC, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NC, SC April New England (8): CT, ME, MA, NH, NY, PA, RI, VT, May Northwestern (9): AK, ID, KS, MT, ND, OR, SD, WA, WY June Middle West (9): IL, IA, IN, MI, MN, MO, NE, OH, WI ~ JOE BIALEK VIA EMAIL

ALL TOO REAL

DISCRIMINATION REMAINS A CLEAR AND PRESENT FACT OF LIFE TO MANY IN 2020

T

he black experience has been written about in many great books, especially such classics as “Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison, “The Fire Next Time” by James Baldwin, and “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou. Other strong black authors include Donald Goines and Robert Beck, also known as Iceberg Slim. In America’s prisons and ghettos the work of these two men continues to resonate. The sacrifice and struggles required to be accepted in America is real, not just for blacks, but also for Asians, Latinos, Native Americans and other minorities. It is an everyday struggle to overcome prejudices, internally and externally. The United States was founded on democratic principles established by white men who were considered revolutionaries. They opposed a system run by a king, a monarchy, yet ignored and discriminated against women and minorities when the country was first established in 1776. This exclusion persists 244 years later, and with Donald Trump as president, divisions and hatred continue to exist based on race and ethnicity. I learned a great deal about race and class issues while I was an undergraduate student at Occidental College, a private, liberal arts college attended by such individuals as President Barack Obama and Jack Kemp, a nine-term Republican congressman and former secretary of Housing and Urban Development under the H.W. Bush administration. Obama continues to be perceived as a progressive and Kemp was pegged as a staunch but well-regarded Republican conservative who was recognized for his compassion for working class people. The Obama/Kemp ideologies seem to have been lost in the current political discourse and our everyday treatment of other human beings. People continue to be judged by their gender, sexual orientation, skin color, physical disabilities, and age. Just look how Bernie Sanders is being grilled and questioned regarding his health because he is 78 years old. Age discrimination is pervasive and endemic in our society, unless you are a billionaire like Mike Bloomberg. His $60 billion makes him seem younger, even though he is also 78. This leads me to wonder: How does one who is biracial or multiracial navigate the discrimination and prejudices held by so many members of our society? I have been denying my own genetic makeup for decades. I was born in Los Angeles, then deported as a baby to El Salvador with my mother. I grew up there until I was 5. Then we migrated to South Central Los Angeles, which was predominantly African American at the time. I confused my teachers. They would simply stare and wonder where this pale looking boy came from. It’s four decades later and I am still confusing the hell out of people. In East LA many assume that I am white. In Glendale, some people assume that I am Armenian or of Middle Eastern descent. The truth is I grew up in South Central always seeing myself as Latino, but not necessarily fitting the stereotypical physical profile. Some African Americans even assumed that I was a lost, curly haired Jewish boy — hanging out in the ghetto. The point is people judge other people based on skin color, not on character. Yes, people do judge books by their cover and humans judge other humans based on how they look, how they dress, what kind of car they drive, how big their house is, and how much money they have. Iconic leaders have advocated for fairness and equality among human beings, but they have perished as a result of misunderstandings, intolerance, envy, jealousy, and simple human hatred from their own race or people sharing their ethnic backgrounds. You can give your heart and soul in advocating for your community and in return one of your own may end up murdering you. That is what happened to Gandhi, St. Oscar Romero, Malcolm X, Tupac Shakur, Notorious BIG, Nipsey Hussle, and countless other leaders and activists. Yes, America is still perceived as a binary white and black nation, while the others continue to struggle to be included, seen and heard. It is definitely a daily struggle to promote tolerance and understanding among humans. I continue to identify as Latino. It is an exhausting journey since I may look or fit into different race/ethnic categories — I get profiled all the time. I could have conveniently chosen to remain in Minnesota after high school and somehow blended in. But I decided to return to Los Angeles to become involved with political organizing and social justice issues. Over the past 25 years, some things have changed for the better, some for worse. Race and ethnicity issues continue to tear our country apart. We are a divided nation that mainly worships the almighty dollar, above all else, and not necessarily the character and intellect of an individual. The current crop of presidential candidates seems to be missing the magic of Abraham Lincoln, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. Bernie Sanders seems to be the closest to the dreams we held dear as a nation during the 1960s and were extinguished through the murders of iconic leaders. He may represent a last flicker of hope for young voters. Yes, political fires are still burning throughout our nation, even as racial and ethnic tensions continue. We may choose to be agents of division or agents of positive change. What kind of change are you choosing to be? The choice is yours to be a uniter or a divider. In my case, I will continue to work toward social justice, unity and tolerance — even if it kills me. n

RACE RESULTS

VOTERS DECIDE CONTESTS FOR PASADENA MAYOR AND COUNCIL, AS WELL AS COUNTY, STATE AND FEDERAL OFFICES BY KEVIN UHRICH

T

he race for mayor of Pasadena between incumbent Terry Tornek and Councilman Victor Gordo appeared headed for a November runoff Wednesday morning, while two of three open City Council seats were won by incumbents, according to unofficial election results posted Wednesday morning by the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Office. At the federal level, both US Rep. Adam Schiff, who represents portions of Pasadena and faced seven opponents, and US Rep. Judy Chu, both Democrats, were re-elected by commanding margins. At the state level, Sen. Anthony Portantino of La Canada Flintridge and Assemblyman Chris Holden, also Democrats, were both re-elected, with Portantino running unopposed, and Holden, a former Pasadena City Council member and mayor, ahead of his latest opponent with 71.72 percent of the vote for another two-year term. At the county level, District 5 Supervisor Kathryn Berger was leading two other candidates — Sierra Madre Mayor John Harabedian and former opponent Darrell Park — for a second term with 61 percent of the vote Wednesday morning, according to Ballotpedia. County Measure R, which would give subpoena power to the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission, was sailing to victory with 71.71 percent, or 705,369 of the ballots cast. Over at Pasadena City College, Board of Trustees member Jim Osterling was re-elected to another term, while Trustee Hoyt Hillsman went down to defeat by Tammy Silver, who captured 56.99 percent of the votes cast in that race. And in Glendale, incumbent City Council member Paula Devine was first among three top vote getters for three open council seats, taking 22.99 percent of the ballots cast. Former City Clerk Ardy Kassakhian came in second among the eight candidates

with 18.67 percent, or 10,939 votes, and Dan Brotman took third, with 10,432 votes, or 17.81 percent. One surprise was incumbent Vartan Gharpetian, first elected to the council in 2005, not being among the top three candidates, taking only 14.17 percent of the vote, the Glendale News-Press reported. Assemblywoman Laura Friedman, also a Democrat and a former Glendale City Council member, was also re-elected to her Sacramento seat, winning 73.3 percent of the votes cast in that race. In the Pasadena municipal elections, the battle for mayor between Tornek, Gordo, Jason Hardin and political newcomer Major Williams fluctuated through the night and early Wednesday morning, with Gordo finally coming out on top over Tornek, recording 45.99 percent, or 10,702 ballots cast in that race. If a candidate does not receive 50 percent plus one vote, the race will be decided in a runoff in the November general election. In the race for the council, District 1 incumbent Tyron Hampton ran unopposed for another four-year term. In District 2, Planning Commissioner Felicia Williams, with 51.06 percent of the vote cast, pulled ahead of the three other candidates in the race to take over for outgoing District 2 Councilwoman Margaret McAustin, who chose not to seek reelection. In District 4, incumbent Gene Masuda skated to an easy win over three opponents, taking nearly 61 percent of the vote. And, in District 6, Councilman Steve Madison appeared to be heading for another four-year term, taking 52.99 percent, or 2,444 of the votes cast. n

uring the last City Council meeting on Feb. 24, members of the public joined council members in raising more questions about the reassignment of Pasadena Fire Chief Bertral Washington. Council members John Kennedy and Tyron Hampton joined the public in asking for answers and clarification about City Manager Steve Mermell’s decision to reassign Washington to work out of his office on the city’s Wireless Emergency Alert System (WEA). So did Naja Benson, who spoke during public comment at the start of the meeting. “The removal of Bertral Washington has affected this community directly. So it’s affecting each and every one of us,” Benson told the council. “All I’m asking from each and every one of you that sits up there is to take a look again and see how we could have addressed this differently, and what changes possibly can be done to either bring him back, or bring some justice to the situation.” The two councilmen believe the decision to reassign Washington may have been racially motivated. “It gives those of us who have experienced racism and disparate treatment over the years a very bad taste and we’re not going to be silenced by time,” Kennedy said during the meeting. Kennedy was picking up from where he and

Hampton had left off in the council’s meeting prior to this one, with Hampton encouraging people to keep coming back to the council until there are some answers to what actually happened. “But this is not an issue just about African Americans. I would invite my brown brothers and sisters to pay attention to what has happened as well, because oftentimes they are treated with such disrespect as well,” said Kennedy, who chairs the council’s Public Safety Committee. During the council meeting, Hampton expressed his frustration over the matter, asking Mermell why the City Council was left in the dark about Washington’s reassignment. Although he remains at his present salary, which is listed by the city as a maximum of $228,000 a year, Washington has been replaced by Mermell with Deputy Chief Bryan Frieders, who is now acting chief. Like Mermell, Washington also has not spoken publicly about the situation. “I didn’t feel like I got a heads up,” Hampton said at the Feb. 24 meeting. “I meet with you twice a month,” he said directly to Mermell. “I talk to you regularly on the phone, and him being terminated never came up in our conversation. So I think it is fair to give a council member and multiple council members and the public an idea of why this man, who lives in this community, who does so much for this community, was treated this way.” Hampton also echoed the sentiments of Kennedy in calling for change if the decision was racially motivated. “This is classic racism and Steve Mermell has fallen in on that,” Hampton told the Pasadena Weekly. “If he’s part of that, then we need to reevaluate his position.” “We are not going to talk about this, because it’s a personnel matter,” said city Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian. City Attorney Michele Beal Bagneris did not comment specifically about Washington’s case, but reminded council members and the public 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 03.05.20

about the privacy rights of public employees, including Washington. “Personnel matters are not appropriately discussed in public sessions with respect to public employees,” Bagneris said during the meeting. “That right of privacy is found in our United States Constitution, the California Constitution. And that right could be violated if the city releases personnel records, personnel information in a public setting.” Washington has buckled with the powerful Pasadena Firefighters Association, Local 809, over a number of issues, the latest being the wearing of mourning bands by local firefighters in honor of four fallen brethren killed while fighting wildfires in Northern California in 2018. Administrative Law Judge Bernhard Rohrbacher, acting on grievances filed by local firefighters, criticized city officials for not retracting a petition created by two battalion chiefs to win support for Washington from firefighters over his decision to disallow the armbands. Rohrbacher found the Fire Department violated the law governing collective bargaining for public employees by circulating the petition among union members, “in a manner that tended to coerce them to sign it and to, thereby, side with management against Local 809,” the judge wrote. If anything, Hampton is hoping for better clarity on the chief’s situation. “If there was something egregious or wrong, I assume the city manager would have reached out to me,” said Hampton. “It is mind boggling and makes no sense at all. He was handling the job and he’s handled the job very well,” Hampton said of Washington,. “Especially when you go to a council meeting, you get 60, 70 to upwards of 100 people showing up on your behalf, that speaks volumes of the job that he’s actually doing,” Hampton said, referring to a standing-room-only crowd of people, led by the Pasadena Branch President Allen Edson, attending the council meeting when the controversy first became public. n

en. Anthony Portantino (DLa Cañada Flintridge) and Assemblyman Chris Holden (D-Pasadena) are among numerous state legislators from both parties calling for changes to the controversial gig-economy law Assembly Bill 5. The two Democratic lawmakers voiced their concerns regarding the problems that have arisen since being signed into law. “The intention of AB 5 is to protect and reclassify victimized and misclassified workers, and the legislation will prove to be impactful on that end,” Holden told Pasadena Now. “However, Lorena Gonzalez aspects of the new law have created unintended consequences for a number of professions that need to be addressed.” Introduced by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), AB 5 was intended to regulate the gig-economy, mainly focusing on app-based laborers such as those working for Uber, Lyft and Doordash. It would require companies to treat freelancers as employees, making them eligible for benefits and placing them on mandatory payroll forms. However, they have affected other industries as well, prompting state lawmakers to introduce 34 separate pieces of legislation, most of which focus on expanding the occupations on the exempt list. The law has affected other industries such as newspapers and those in the arts as freelance writers and photographers have seen a reduction in work. The law limits freelance journalists to 35 contributions per year to any individual employer. “Clearly, the many folks in the arts are just one industry where we expect significant changes to AB 5 and I will also be providing input as these two actual bills work through the committee process,” Portantino said to the online news site. One of the 34 bills introduced proposes to add still photographers, photojournalists, freelance writers, editors and newspaper cartoonists to the exempt list. Assembly Bill 1850, introduced by Gonzalez last Thursday, would eliminate the 35-submission limit, requires that contractors be allowed to work for multiple companies and bans them from working onsite for any business. The law has come under fire from politicians such as Assembly members Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) and Melissa Melendez (R-Murrieta), whose AB 1928 would suspend AB 5 until further notice. Kiley and Melendez’s bill failed to get enough votes and was tabled. “The Assembly consciously chose to keep enforcing a law that everyone, including the author, acknowledges has major problems and is destroying people’s lives,” Kiley told Pasadena Now after the Assembly denied the urgency motion. Some lawmakers agree with Kiley, claiming the law failed to account for the intricacies of the California economy. Gonzalez responded to the criticism saying that the bill was not intended to eliminate the use of independent contractors. “It’s the most significant labor reform law we’ve had in decades,” she said to the Los Angeles Times. “It is big. And there are a lot of different situations.” n

HOW MUCH PROTECTION IS ENOUGH? FORMER MAYOR CRITICIZES CITY'S RESPONSE TO CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

BY MATT RODRIGUEZ

W

hile Pasadena Health Department officials have explained that everything that can be done to stem the spread of COVID-19 also known as the novel coronavirus, is already being done, a former Pasadena mayor said that is not enough. “Let's not wait for the first coronavirus case to be reported in Pasadena,” attorney and former Mayor Bill Paparian wrote in a Feb. 26 email to Pasadena City Manager Steve Mermell and Mayor Terry Tornek. Paparian served on the City Council from 1987 to 1999, and as mayor from 1995 to 1997. Paparian pointed out that the mayor of San Francisco had declared a state of emergency, President Trump submitted a $2.5 billion funding request to Congress and that Democratic leadership was requesting $8.5 billion to help fight the spread of the virus. Paparian offered eight actions ranging from expanding the city infrastructure to combat the disease and educating the public. “Yes, I know that this is an ambitious plan, but it must be implemented immediately,” Paparian stated. “The time to take action is now!” In response to Paparian’s email, Mermell echoed the message of many officials that caution and preparedness are appropriate but panic is not. “Given the spread of the disease, there is certainly cause for concern,” wrote Mermell. “However, we need to be mindful of not prompting panic or undue fear on the part of residents. Our response needs to be based on facts and information.” The virus has infected about 90,000 people, with cases in every continent spanning over 60 countries. There have been more than 3,000 deaths, a majority of which have been in China. However, some experts believe the slow response by the Chinese

government may have skewed the numbers. The deaths may also be skewed since 52 percent of men in China smoke, which could complicate one’s health since COVID-19 affects the lungs. As of Monday, in the United States there have been 88 cases reported across the nation and six deaths, all of which were in Washington state. Pasadena officials have made preparations for a possible outbreak in the city, addressing many of the actions listed in Paparian’s email. “We are really emphasizing the need to practice personal hygiene, wash hands, frequently [and] install more hand sanitizers,” said Pasadena Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian. “If you're sick, stay home. But also think about long term. We don't want to instill fear. But we also want to reiterate that a plan should be in place, whether it be for any other type of disaster.” COVID-19 can be contracted through person to person contact, through coughs or sneezes and contact with infected surfaces. The city echoes the message from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Los Angeles County as they advise the public to wash their hands frequently for about 20 seconds, cover your mouth with a tissue or elbow when you sneeze and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. US Surgeon General Jerome Adams 10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 03.05.20

and others advise the nation to stop buying masks because it shortens the supply for medical professionals, which raises the risks for contraction for them and the local communities. Masks are also not effective at preventing the general public from contracting the disease. City officials have been working with the Pasadena Unified School District and private institutions, such as Caltech, and Pasadena City College, along with producing a social media campaign to educate the public. “It's more of an educational campaign and getting the facts out there because there's a lot of speculation and we don't want to instill fear,” Derderian said. “We want to make sure people are just prepared and taking every precautionary measure that they can.” Part of the education campaign includes a public presentation during the March 9 City Council meeting. At that time, city Health Officer Dr. Ying-Ying Goh is expected to give a presentation on the virus. Goh could not be reached by press time for comment on this story. She was also part of the LA County Department of Public Health presentation given on Wednesday where she declared a public health emergency in Pasadena. The declaration will help the city prepare for an adequate response to a community spread and to receive federal reimbursement for any incurred

costs. Goh stated she has confidence that the local health care facilities are prepared for a potential outbreak. LA County has also received test kits and protocols for the novel coronavirus from the CDC. They have been testing and using them since last Wednesday. There are seven types of coronavirus, including COVID-19, which stands for Coronavirus Disease 2019. There are four types that are commonly contracted by humans and are precursors to the common cold. However, there are three more serious types, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and the novel coronavirus COVID-19. Officials are concerned with how easily the virus has been transmitted. Since December 2019, more than 90,000 cases have been reported. In comparison, MERS has 2,494 cases since September 2012. Of the current COVID-19 cases, 80 percent of people experience mild symptoms. According to a study by China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention published earlier this month, the mortality rate of COVID-19 the mortality rate is 2.3 percent, based on the 72,000 cases studied. In comparison, MERS and SARS have a mortality rate of about 34 percent and 10 percent respectively. The annual mortality rate of the seasonal flu is .1 percent.

Even though the mortality rate is much lower than MERS and SARS, COVID-19 has killed about 3,000 people compared to 866 from MERS and 774 from SARS. A majority of deaths from COVID-19 have been among those older than 50. Officials are hopeful that the disease will dissipate around April and the summertime, per the trend of many viral diseases. Many of the diseases struggle to spread in the summer due to the rise in temperature. There is a chance of COVID-19 returning in the fall, which is what happened with the worst flu pandemic in human history, the 1918 Spanish Influenza. In October 1918, the influenza returned and killed 195,000 people in the United States that month alone. The worldwide death total of the disease is estimated at about 50 million to 100 million people. However, many experts believe that if the 1918 influenza were to happen today, modern medicine and technology would be able to mitigate the number of deaths. “A lot of it is day to day,” said Derderian about the preparations Pasadena is making. “We don't know what's going to happen several months down the road, but we do feel confident right now that we are putting out the right messaging and that we do have control, at least in our area of how we’re handling it.” n

et’s talk barbecue! I say this as I try my first-ever bite of su-beoreg sitting at a desk in an alley north of Washington Boulevard. In fact, it’s the back outdoor vestibule of the now legendary SuBeoreg & Monta Factory on Washington Boulevard. Recently featured on the PBS show,” No Passport Required,” hosted by chef Marcus Samuelsson, the tiny storefront has been a neighborhood fixture for 16 years… (And how about this su-beoreg? Buttery phyllo pastry falling in layers under molten mozzarella and feta cheese… how have I not tasted this by now?) Confused? Barbecue… we’re here for the barbecue? Oh, for that, you will have to wait until 7 p.m. Wednesday

through Friday or 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. That’s when a vinyl banner announcing “Porky’s Pit Stop” drops down over the Monta Factory awning and a walk-up neighborhood barbecue stand magically materializes. On a random early Sunday evening I order two “Pork Ribs” combos with all four sides: mac and cheese; curly fries; cole slaw; and fried cauliflower. Both “Regular” and “Spicy,” the ribs arrive back home and… they’re convincingly seductive in the manner that tends to signify good barbecue. There is the familiar though elusive tension between an assertively spiced outer bark and the drape of moist shank softly paging off the ivory bone. Good ribs offer hand-held, portioned, luscious tastiness and satisfaction. On this first blind taste with no further data, information or intel, Porky’s delivers the goods. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

PREPARATION MEETS OPPORTUNITY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 12

And there are “Pulled Pork Sliders.” And “Loaded Fries.” And “Loaded Mac & Cheese.” That’s the whole menu. Go for the ribs. Spicy. Pro-tip: Of the side dishes, there is fervid and mounting local enthusiasm for the fried cauliflower. (My girlfriend devoured it all before I could sample a taste. ) Off-menu tip: Hot Cheeto BBQ Burrito. A fresh addition to the local barbecue landscape, Porky’s has been generating a raving underground buzz since it opened last November. As a roving local chow hound, I couldn’t ignore it. That said, as a roving local chow hound, I also sheepishly admit that it took the promise of barbecue to discover the wonders of su-beoreg and montas. Welcome to my town! Porky’s is the brainchild of Arsen Arabyan, 29 — the ostensible “Pit Master” — in collaboration with Sarkis Yegiazaryan, 28, the young family scion and general manager of “The Factory.” With crumbs of su-beoreg still on my lips, I ask Arabian, why barbecue? “I went to Cal Poly Pomona and got a BA in Food and Nutrition with an emphasis in Science (in 2017). When I got out, my brother and I started making barbecue. I got him a big smoker. We call our friends and they come over. (One friend said) ‘I’ll buy all the supplies. You need to start selling this stuff. It’s really good!’“ So what’s his relationship to the Yegiazaryan family and The Factory? Sarkis now pipes up, “We grew up together playing basketball at the church right across the street. He (came to me and) said, ‘I want to get my foot through the door…’ I close at 6, I got (a kitchen)… Preparation met opportunity and here we are today!” 14 PASADENA WEEKLY | 03.05.20

In the inevitable ensuing interrogation over ingredients and methods, Arabyan is by turns both blithely transparent and guardedly circumspect. No secrets will be revealed here, except to say that a dry rub is involved and that the sauce-base is store-bought and then “doctored” in-house. This is a new regional barbecue style that I will dub “Dena Freestyle” and can only be found at Porky’s Pit Stop. When asked about the popularity of the fried cauliflower side dish and its composition, Arabyan is again guileless. “I’ll be honest. I don’t know the recipe… it’s my mom’s. She makes it everyday. Growing up she always made it for us. I really love it. My mom was the greatest chef growing up…” It also helps that he and Mom — Sona Arabyan — live two blocks away. Mom seems to be the actual secret ingredient around here. Sarkis’ mother, the indomitable Evelina Yegiazaryan, is still the backbone of the Su-beoreg and Manta operation and now runs the family’s new larger venue Mont Factory in Glendale. When I return to actually sample the montas — tiny baked boat-shaped dumplings (think thumb-nail sized khachapuri) served in a spicy tomato sauce, topped with garlic yogurt crème and sprinkled with dried mint and sumac — I encounter a regular customer, Sonia Eurejian. When asked about her order, she replies, “It’s the closet to my mom’s montas…” From behind the counter, a smiling “Koko” Helvajian swiftly serves up my own order of montas. An émigré from Syria, when asked about his background, he simply says,” I work with food… It’s all my mom.” Dena Freestyle Barbecue? Armenian comfort food? It’s all happening out of a storefront on Washington Boulevard. Only in Pasadena. Blame it on mom, y’all. Blame it on mom.

intimate nature, and should “really invite the audience into the story.” The more nuanced arrangements challenge Bermudez, who is accustomed to belting out big, vocally gymnastic roles in musicals like “Evita” and “Jesus Christ Superstar,” to pull back and sing as though he were speaking conversationally. “My normal instinct is to be singing toward the back of a 2,000-seat theater, and this is a 98-seat theater and it’s gotta be as honest and heartfelt as possible,” he says. “There’s nothing performance about it. We’re not using body mics. There’s a certain realness to hearing a voice unamplified, unaltered, without an electronic device — you forget what that feels like. It’s going to be a real interesting experience for the audience.” Sondheim fans should be pleased to learn that Bermudez is singing “No One Has Ever Loved Me,” a poignant number not always included in previous productions. The song arrives at a critical plot juncture, but if not approached carefully it can disrupt the show’s finely balanced tone. “Part of the reason no one ever does ‘Passion’ is the material is very challenging; it’s one of Sondheim’s most cerebral scores,” Bermudez notes. “And the subject matter, if not handled tactfully and carefully, can be off-putting because people can mistakenly take it as a ‘Fatal Attraction’-type theme, and it’s not that at all. It’s about learning that true beauty is not skin deep, and learning to accept someone for their inner beauty, regardless of what their outer trappings may be. It’s a beautiful idea, but a very difficult point. … Sondheim is challenging us to think about what it means to love someone truly.” Love’s contradictions are mirrored in the evolving relationships between characters. To Charles, “Passion” offers validation that love can be genuine even if it doesn’t last in its original form. “A lot of times we walk through life and think we know what we want, who we are,” she muses. “Based on where we are in life in that moment, someone may seem appealing, and then we grow and maybe our counterpart doesn’t grow in that same way. When that happens, there’s the question of, Was our love true then? Was it valid, was it real? I think the answer is yes. Was it meant to last through eternity? No. “Some people come in your life for a lifetime and others for a season. All of those love experiences are valid. That’s something that the show is expressing.”” n “Passion” previews at Boston Court Pasadena, 70 N. Mentor Ave., Pasadena, 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, March 5-7, 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, and 8 p.m. Thursday, March 12, then officially opens Friday, March 13, and runs through April 19; $25-$55. tephen Sondheim’s rarely produced musical “Passion” is being revived this month at Boston Court Pasadena, guided by Artistic Director Emeritus Michael Michetti. Set in 1860s Italy, it considers love, lust and obsession through the triangle of virile army captain Giorgio (Richard Bermudez), his beautiful lover Clara (Bryce Charles), and a mysteriously ill woman named Fosca (Meghan Andrews) who upends Giorgio’s romantic notions about love and awakens him to the broader world. The original 1994 production won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book (by James Lapine). Compared to Sondheim’s best-known musicals — “Company,” “Into the Woods,” “A Little Night Music,” “Sunday in the Park with George,” “Sweeney Todd” — “Passion” is unusually personal, almost raw with sensuality and longing. Sondheim began composing his rhapsodic score after seeing Ettore Scola’s neoromantic 1981 film “Passione d’Amore” (which was based on Iginio Tarchetti’s 1869 novel “Fosca”). The show opens with Clara and Giorgio making love and singing “Happiness,” exchanging a line that foreshadows Giorgio’s later friendship with the traumatized Fosca: “How quickly pity leads to love.” Bryce Charles, who delivered a show-stopping performance as Sarah last year in Pasadena Playhouse’s production of “Ragtime,” acknowledges that Sondheim’s music is “harder than most scores.” But it also provides wonderful material for actors, challenging them to “sing in a way that tells the story” via his precise structuring of melodic lines. “I almost call it a play,” says Richard Bermudez, who is onstage virtually the entire time, “because it reads like a play that happens to have music.” Indeed. With no space allowed for applause, and no intermission, dramatic tension mounts within the musical’s cloistered setting until Fosca and Giorgio wrap their voices around a question for the ages in “Finale”: “Why is love so easy to give/ And so hard to receive?” “The joy is that it is absolutely stunning. I have loved this music for a very long time,” Charles says, adding that loving it from afar is not the same as truly understanding Sondheim’s luxurious melodies and exacting rhythm changes from within. “As beautiful as it is to sing, we kind of wanted to just fast-forward to it being easy and free and be able to live in the music. But that’s not the way any show goes, especially not an obscure Sondheim piece,” she says. “You have to dig deep into the music and learn everything note by note and then really let your body feel it.” Charles says it was “comforting” to learn this production is being done with new orchestrations for a chamber ensemble. The smaller scale better serves the material’s

THE MASTERSONS, No Time for Love Songs (Red House): HHHH

The LA-based duo of guitarist Chris Masterson and violinist Eleanor Whitmore have a knack for mining contradictions, spinning poignant laments while finding hope in feel-good melodies. Their fourth album, produced by Shooter Jennings, balances smart songwriting with chiming guitars and harmonies that act like balm on frank lyrics (“Oh I love you so much/ But it’s no time for love songs/ The fruit ain’t gonna grow without the bees”). The Americana duo’s vocal chemistry smolders over a pensive backbeat during “There is a Song to Sing”; other highlights include hooky rockers “Spellbound” and “Eyes Open Wide.”themastersons.com

Savoring blessings and finding your way are recurring themes throughout the Austin-based Latin-funk nonet’s latest release, produced by Los Lobos keyboardist/saxophonist Steve Berlin. Percussionist Alex Marrero is onboard as lead vocalist, after singing with the band on previous Brown Sabbath recordings; that deepens soulful tracks such as the thumping “You’ve Got to Change,” “Hold Your Way” and anti-bigotry call “Naín.” “Seamus” gets lost in its own psychedelia, but the horn-punched “Brownie” and gospel groover “Fill My Cup” should fill dance floors. brownoutmusic.com

luesy grit has long been a characteristic of Juno Award-winning Canadian rocker Sass Jordan’s music. It’s evident in the go-for-broke vocal style that landed her the role of Janis Joplin in a 2001 Off-Broadway production of “Love, Janis,” and her recordings, from the slick ’90s rock of “Racine” and “Rats” through the rootsier grooves of 2010’s “From Dusk ’Til Dawn.” But not until “Rebel Moon Blues,” due March 13 from Stony Plain, did she go all in. When label executives first pitched an all-blues album, Jordan balked; flashing on icons like B.B. King and John Lee Hooker, she feared she couldn’t pull off their material. The concept began to make sense when her husband, guitarist and Guess Who frontman Derek Sharp, framed it with the suggestion that she record Gary Moore’s powerful ballad “Still Got the Blues” (“I can hear you singing that”). “Rebel Moon Blues” also features Jordan and Sharp’s blues-rocker “The Key,” and chestnuts plucked from the 1950s-’70s catalogues of Willie Dixon, Sleepy John Estes, and Leon Russell (the Freddie King-popularized “Palace of the King”). Jordan and longtime slide guitarist Chris Caddell feed off each other’s phrasing, magnifying the rhythmic stomp of Keb’ Mo’s “Am I Wrong” and J.B. Hutto’s “Too Much Alcohol.” “One Way Out” is rendered in faithful homage to the Allman Brothers: “I pretend I’m Gregg Allman,” Jordan says, laughing, “and get this vibe of being completely stoned and in the middle of the South in the ’70s.” “You can hear that we’re just having the time of our lives. … It seems to be making people very

happy, and of course that makes me very happy because what the hell am I doing this for, really, other than expressing myself? But when you make other people happy at the same time it’s win-win all the way.” She’s considering making another blues recording live at a show, but what’s bringing her to the Rose Friday isn’t the blues but David Bowie. Jordan is one of three featured singers backed by Bowie’s former sidemen, performing classic albums “Diamond Dogs” and “Ziggy Stardust” for a “Bowie Celebration.” She says response from multigenerational audiences on tour has been “overwhelming”: “People crying, singing at the top of their lungs, completely transported — the power of music never fails to astound me.” “I was a raging Bowie fan from around age 13,” she enthuses, recalling her band the Pin Ups, named after Bowie’s 1973 album. “Those records were a massive part of my teenage years. I must have listened to ‘David Live: David Bowie at the Tower in Philadelphia’ about 50 billion times. Standing onstage now, singing those songs with Mike Garson, who played keyboards on that record — if my 13-year-old self could see me, it would faint. I can’t even believe this is happening to me. Always be careful what you wish for, because you’re gonna get it!” n

HELLO FOREVER, Whatever It Is (Hello Forever): HHH

Sunny, ’60s- and ’70s-evoking pop, filtered through Topanga Canyon sagebrush and patchouliscented vibes. “Every day could be paradise,” they insist over a pogo beat during “Farm on the Mountaintop,” before questioning life’s mysteries with “Colors in the Sky” (“I asked my friends if we could pray/ They stare, reviled and turn the other way”). The album’s uneven, but the breezy tunes, Beach Boys-style harmonies and love-is-all conviction of “Her Everything” and “Anywhere is Everywhere” are cheering. Release show at York Manor in Highland Park Thursday, March 5. facebook.com/pg/helloforeverinternet

THE JAMES HUNTER SIX, Nick of Time (Daptone): HHHH

The gravel-voiced British soul veteran isn’t about to sand the grit off his retro 1950s style, but he has been refining it since 2016’s “Hold On!,” his sixth album and first for Daptone. Hunter’s Everyman ebullience remains infectious and his band’s in game form throughout this third outing with the label. The players all step up during the amusing “Ain’t Goin’ Up in One of Those Things,” while “Paradise for One” surprises with its piano cocktail swing. Amid slinky rumbas and swoony odes to his missus, “Brother or Other” stands out with its early ’60s groove and heartfelt message: “Make up your mind/ Does your love extend to all mankind?” jameshuntermusic.com

The proposed amendments would allow SRO as a permitted use within the Central District Specific Plan, and would increase the maximum unit size. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may visit the website below using the file number assigned to this case. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected on the Internet Web site.
