ENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
“I
wear orange for 16 days in a row to stand in solidarity with other activists committed to ending violence against women,” I said. It was 2019, and I was at breakfast in Puerto Vallarta with my dear friend and colleague, Anne Peterson, along with other women. We were there to drool by the pool, be free of kids and partners, and explore what it means to be female in the 21st century. Our group is dedicated to creating an enduring global community exploring the culture and history of women … and why they are often missing from both. I was a good fit for this group, as I have studied this my entire adult life. We say, “Discover your unique Goddess-ness.” You may ask, “Why would I want to do that? And what does that have to do with ending violence against women?” Hang in there for just a little bit longer. Anne, who is fun, wry and intellectual, said, “I’m glad you said something about the orange. I was wondering if you were in some kind of religious sect.” I answered, “Norwegians don’t join sects. Although if you count worshipping melted butter, then yes, I am in that one.” “Wearing orange—whether it’s an orange ribbon or outfit—is related to the annual U.N. Women ‘16 Days Of Activism Against GenderBased Violence’ campaign,” I said. I know that for most people in this country, the United Nations is arcane, especially since the mainstream media seems allergic to reporting U.N. news in general, and U.N. female-centric news in particular. A quick overview: In 1999, the U.N. General Assembly proclaimed November 25 as the annual International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. (The U.N. is notorious for nonsticky names!) Soon after, the U.N. Women launched a public awareness campaign to “Orange the World”—orange being used as a verb—as a reminder that violence against women and girls continues to be the most pernicious, invisible, longest-lasting, and deadly pandemic on the globe. Why does the “Orange” campaign always end on December 10? That’s the day in 1948 that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted by the U.N. And why is that significant for women and girls? Because the UDHR was the first international declaration to specifically acknowledge women as deserving of human rights. It is not an accident that the drafting of the UDHR was headed by a woman, Eleanor Roosevelt. We’re still working in many cultures, including our own, to recognize the cost of squashing women and girls’ potential as citizens. I explored gender-based violence in my first book, “Beauty Bites Beast.” In the book, I suggested that routinely leaving women out of leadership and the iconography in major religions has been a form of
•LETTERS• A GREAT ELECTION, AGAINST ALL ODDS
Editor: Congratulations America! A very special thanks to the millions of Americans who flocked to the polls in record-breaking numbers to support our democracy in this election. There are many outstanding courageous leaders who were responsible for this recordbreaking victory, but I would like to take a brief detour to the extremely unpatriotic behavior of Republicans. Even though we had a president who exerted all his power to overthrow the vote of the American people in this democratic election, he was supported by the Republican party whose silence
was deafening. Established leaders like Tom Cotton, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Mike Pompeo, Mike Lee, Mike Pence, Nikki Haley, Lindsey Graham and Kevin McCarthy, all sycophants played Russian roulette with the American democracy by supporting the presidency of an aspirational authoritarian. Special thanks also goes to Christopher Wray, Chris Krebs, Brad Raffensperger, Mitt Romney as outstanding Americans, and all the brave civil servants, elected officials and the judges who did their job. ~Richard A. intellectual and spiritual violence. Violence is not merely physical; it ranges from rendering groups invisible and insignificant to out-andout genocide. Which brings me back to Puerto Vallarta and the community that Anne Peterson is leading: “The Goddess Inquiry.” The backlash that Anne encountered upon first naming and then launching the group was intense and initially surprising. For one, the word “goddess” now has connotations that are mostly “new agey,” referring to young, white, blonde, skinny and vapid sex objects. The “white-ification and masculinization” of religious symbology extended to “goddess,” too, not only with a white-bearded old guy in the sky as a father figure and Jesus as a blue-eyed blond. For centuries, females have been relegated to the tired Madonna/whore paradigm where Mary couldn’t even be granted human sexuality. And the goddess? She’s not powerful; she’s a seducer. “I don’t want to explore goddesses. I’m over 50 and fat,” one friend said when I invited her to take one of our goddess vacations together. “I do not want to be involved with one more white woman touchy-feely conference,” another said. “I do not see myself as goddess material,” a third friend added. If you scratch the surface of any culture, you’re going to find holy women, oracles, and yes, goddesses that embody every quality that exists for humanity. I know it’s shocking, but men can learn from sacred female entities, too. The powerful aspects of women and goddesses have been relegated to most cultures’ dustbins: we need to reclaim them! Personally, my favorite goddess is not a drippy, dippy blonde Venus rising from a seashell. Mine is Elle, the Nordic goddess of age and wisdom who I am sure also loved butter. She is in the Nordic pantheon because she triumphed over Thor by wrestling him to the ground. She didn’t draw blood; she didn’t maim him in any way. Boys, that is a lesson right there from (gasp!) a female entity. So yes, part of my goddess expression as Elle is to wear orange for 16 days. I encourage you to do the same. n NOTE: The 2020 campaign theme is “Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!” For more info and action ideas, go to https://bit.ly/3lfxdVC” Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! COVID FATIGUE
PASADENA DOES ITS BEST TO WARD OFF THE INFECTIOUS DISEASE STORY BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ
I
t’s been eight months since California entered its first lockdown amidst the fears of the novel coronavirus. The lives of nearly 30 million people changed overnight. Kids were sent home, saying goodbye to their teachers, hoping the government would rein in the virus in a matter of weeks. They didn’t. College seniors, who had worked four or even more years to get their diploma, couldn’t walk across a stage and shake their president’s hand. After all those years of hard work, they got their diplomas in the mail and a virtual party on Zoom. People lost their jobs, their businesses and their lives. Doctors and nurses had to tell their dying patients that it was too dangerous to see their families. Many died alone. Some had the fortune of nurses working back-to-back shifts to stay there holding their hands as they died. To date, over 266,000 Americans have died due to COVID-19. States such as California struggle to contain the virus with 41 counties entering its most restrictive tier. Los Angeles County speculates another lockdown as the infection rate skyrockets. However, until December 20, public gatherings are banned. All while the pandemic has brought the United States to its knees, the American people adapted. Loved ones fostered and cared for relationships through a screen. They learned how to have Thanksgiving dinner miles apart.
Individuals persevered through an economic collapse, patronizing what they can to their favorite restaurants. Whether it was in a brown box or outdoors on a sidewalk, people adapt to the new normal. Scientists have developed vaccines faster than ever before. To date, there are six vaccines approved, 13 in Phase 3, 17 in Phase 2 and 38 in Phase 1. Three producers of vaccines—AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna—have tested at or above 90% efficacy. Good or bad the American people have endured a decade in the past 259 days. Ain’t no trip Paul Howard, 57, has been living in Pasadena for most of his life. When the COVID-19 first arrived in the United States, his life barely changed. He did not think the virus was that serious. At the beginning of the pandemic, he did not even wear a mask. “I didn’t really trip off it,” he said. “I said, ‘We’ll beat this no problem.’ I really had that thought in my head. But that’s not true. We’re not beating it, a matter of fact it’s beating us.” Seeing the numbers rise and seeing some of his family members contract COVID-19, it took five weeks until he finally donned a mask. Later, he saw the true danger of the virus when three of his family members in Chicago died. “They were my uncle, my auntie and my cousin,” he said. “They all had some age on them and the youngest one of them was 53.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

Howard said that he believes his family members caught it from one of their tenants, a little girl who came home from school. The deaths and the sheer length of the pandemic have weighed heavy on Howard. “This is very, very depressing,” he said. Before somebody wants to say good morning to me, and I want to bite their head off. They ain’t did nothing but say good morning. It’s all because of this.” Depressed he couldn’t see his family during Thanksgiving, he regrets taking gatherings for granted. “I miss the gathering, the laughing, the crying, the arguing. I miss all of the above,” Howard said. “We were always going over somewhere and just doing whatever together. I feel isolated. It’s more isolation than ever before.” As Howard sits in his walker/wheelchair combo, he leans in close to say a message for people who were once like him, not taking the pandemic seriously. “I want to hit them in their face. I’m telling you the truth,” he said. “I’ve heard so many [conspiracies] it’s not funny. It’s not understandable. How can we be so mixed up in our thoughts when it’s point blank in our face? I don’t understand.” A way to find themselves Without ever walking on their campus, Cryic Thotz and Leo Phillips began their first year of high school meeting their classmates through Zoom. “I’d rather be in school because in online school you can’t concentrate on what you’re doing,” said Thotz. It’s definitely taking a toll on my grades.” “It’s weird not going to school because we’re freshmen,” added Phillips. “We haven’t been on campus and we’re starting a new year.” With plenty of time on their hands, the two teenagers typically work on their skateboarding and filming skills, exploring the LA area. They usually just skate up and down the sidewalks performing skateboard tricks like ollies, kickflips and manuals. On this day they were skating down the sidewalk right next to Pasadena City Hall with R&B artist Frank Ocean playing in the background. Although they understand the gravity of the pandemic, in their carefree youth they try not to worry or frustrate themselves over things they cannot control. Along with film and skating, the two try to focus on growing by learning more about themselves. “I think it’s been good to focus on me instead of worrying about other stuff. It’s been calming,” said Thotz. Even with the rising cases and deaths in America and LA, the two stay grounded in their youthful bliss choosing to focus on the brighter side. “Freshman year doesn’t seem like the worst year to miss,” said Phillips. “The pandemic has offered a new opportunity to meet people who you wouldn’t have met in real life,” added Thotz. “If the pandemic didn’t happen, I don’t think that I would have met a lot of my friends now. A massive bummer Andrew Dazé has switched alma maters more than most, with transfers from Indiana University, to Pasadena City College to finally Loyola Marymount University. After five years and three different schools, he finally received the coveted diploma he’d work so hard to get. However, with coronavirus rampant, he traded in marching down the aisle to Sir Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” for a simple graduation party at his house with his family. “It was a massive bummer,” Dazé recalled. “It felt like I had just finished this double marathon…but I didn’t get the grand celebration as one usually hopes for. But I try to not let that take away from my accomplishments and how I feel.” Dejected that he didn’t get the feeling of walking across the stage and accepting his diploma, his father offered words of comfort. “My dad is always one to give a family anecdote for every problem you ever have,” Dazé said as he mimicked his father’s voice. “He said, ‘Well, your grandpa was drafted before he could graduate, so at least you’re not fighting a war. [I responded] ‘Well I guess, doesn’t really make me feel better,’ but I understood where he’s coming from. I’m not the only person in the world who hasn’t had a graduation.” With student loans creeping up behind him and the anxiety of paying them off quickly looming behind him, Dazé still stays grateful for the privileges he has. “[My dad] would say get over it and that’s what I try and do,” Dazé said. “The diploma is all that really matters.”

For the get togethers As his term comes to an end, Mayor Terry Tornek filmed his last weekly video message to his constituents urging them to refrain from family gatherings during the holiday season. Hoping to set a good example, Tornek adheres to the rules strictly. “I tape a message to people and urge them to maintain social distance, to wear their face covering, to wash their hands and all that stuff that you’ve heard about endlessly,” said Tornek. “It would be entirely inappropriate for me not to behave that way. Look what happened with Gov. Newsom and his now-infamous dinner party.” In early November, images of Newsom showed him disregarding the health codes he enacted as he attended a maskless dinner party. Hoping to lead by example, Tornek sacrifices the meaningful time spent with his family. “When we do visit each other, we socially distance, wear masks and stay outdoors,” he said. “It’s very challenging and generally unsatisfactory. But we do the best we can, and I am lucky and blessed in the sense that at least I do get to see them, and we are able to share time together.” In normal times the Torneks are a very physical family, playing and embracing each other, however during the pandemic the outgoing mayor has traded those memories with good health. “I live for [our get togethers] but again, I’m grateful for what we have,” said Tornek. “I get to talk to my kids every day and I get to see at least some of them once a week. I’m blessed. I’m not as isolated as many are.” Even with his blessings, Tornek, just like many others, hopes the time of socially distant gatherings ends and he can once again embrace his family. Even though he’s tired he knows that the world is still not free from the virus. “I know people are tired. They’re just tired of this. I’m tired of it, really tired of it,” said Tornek. “But you know being tired of it doesn’t mean it’s over.” The voice of business Every morning, Chamber of Commerce President Paul Little walks his Great Pyrenees, Maggie, through Pasadena neighborhoods. “I walk my dog around downtown two or three mornings a week and I keep seeing more ‘For Lease’ signs,” he said. “I was on Lake Avenue today and there’s a couple of places that I was looking at trying to remember what was there before.” The novel coronavirus has brought the American economy to its knees. Currently, the unemployment rate sits at 6.9% for October 2020 a dramatic increase of 3.3 points compared to October 2019. “We’re seeing the effect of not even a stagnant economy. It’s a plummeting economy,” said Little. “The locally owned small businesspeople are really suffering through all of this. They don’t have deep pockets. They don’t have corporate structure behind them.” As the head of the chamber of commerce, he’s had to field calls from struggling businesses trying to walk them through steps on how to save their business. However, sometimes he can’t help. “I know a lot of the folks and I know the mindset to start a small business,” said Little. “They put their money in, but they [also] put their heart and soul into it. It’s a very emotional endeavor and it’s very difficult for anyone to think about closing up. Running out of time Prior to working at Beer and Claw in the heart of Old Town Pasadena, Damien Hurtado was worked two or three days a week making only $200 during a pandemic. “It was pretty tough especially trying to feed a family of five,” he said. “Bills just piled up. Luckily, I was able to maintain my rent every month, but every other bill is backed up pretty bad it’s hard to try to provide for them.” Scared to leave their kids with people outside of their household, Hurtado’s wife decided to stay at home with the kids while he worked. In addition to being the only one working, he’s typically the only one going in and out of the house. “We waited it out inside the house. We wouldn’t leave,” Hurtado said. “The only one that would go out was me for work. Besides that, the rest of the family was in the house for at least four or five months.” During the rush for toilet paper, Hurtado found himself lining up at 4 a.m., hoping to get toilet paper and diapers for his infant son. However, with everything sold out Hurtado ran out of diapers. “There was a time that my son went without diapers for almost two weeks because I couldn’t find diapers anywhere,” Hurtado said. “We were going oldschool using cloths. I looked for alternative options and they said use cloths.”
Andrew Daze, of Pasadena, opted for a simple graduation party with his family after he finished school at Loyola Marymount University. As California sees another closure due to COVID-19 he reminisces about the lost time with his kids. “I miss being able to do more things with my children,” Hurtado said. “I miss being able to take them out to the movies and stuff like that. That’s the only thing I miss.” From one pandemic to another In the late 1980s and early 1990s, compelled by the challenges posed by HIV/ AIDS, Dr. Kimberly Shriner began her career as an infectious disease expert at the height of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. “I started my career as a pandemic and I will be retiring after this pandemic,” she said. “It somewhat bookends here.” As an infectious disease expert, Shriner has seen her fair share of death watching her patients die, whether it’s HIV/AIDS or COVID-19. Even with this experience, watching her patients take their last breath has not gotten easier. “I started my career during the AIDS pandemic, and I watched lots of young men who were not [openly gay] die of AIDS,” said Shriner. “This isn’t new for me as a physician, but it doesn’t get any easier.” She still remembers the night when the namesake of her clinic in Huntington Hospital, Phil Simon died. “It was a stormy night and there was thunder and lightning kind of unusual in Pasadena,” she said. As the infectious disease consultant at Huntington Hospital, Shriner typically sees the sickest patients, the ones who desperately need her help. One of her patients battled with COVID-19 for weeks before she died. “She was just so sick, and she had these clotting problems that happens with COVID,” Shriner said. “She clotted off her hand and her hand got gangrenous. She was on the ventilator for six weeks. We’d given her everything we could possibly give her.” Even after her patient received Remdesivir, convalescent plasma, and steroids, the woman that Shriner called the “presence of the whole family” died. “It was just horrific, and their lives are forever changed because of that,” Shriner said. To those experiencing pandemic fatigue, Shriner reiterates the words of her colleague National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci. “Just try to get through the next two months,” she said. “The end is in sight. I think the vaccine is looking very promising and it will be the way to get us out of this.” n 12.03.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7

IN NEED OF HELP SHOPS IN SMALLER TOWNS LIKE ALTADENA ARE SUFFERING STORY BY VICTORIA CARBÉ VALENTINO | PHOTOS BY ANGELA CONTRERAS
A
s the pandemic drags on, small community businesses are struggling to breathe. Hikers on their way up to their favorite trailheads whiz by Altadena’s shops without noticing. These stores, some of which are at the top of Lake Avenue, aren’t flashy, but they are essential to the fabric of the community. They feed people. They teach people. They provide services at reasonable rates and sometimes for free when the need arises. One such shop is the vegan café Oh Happy Day, which is run by John Hopkins. After he was vandalized a few years ago, the community rallied around him via GoFundMe. Now, he’s confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hopkins cooks fresh organic vegan food daily, serving from the counter for outdoor patio eating. “I’ve had to ask customers to eat outside now so lots of my regulars who liked to sit and visit with each other while they ate inside aren’t able to do that anymore with the changing weather,” Hopkins said. He has been providing hot nourishing home-cooked vegan food to the community for decades. On a regular day he works from before dawn till way after the sun goes down and does not get much of a break.

“I can’t afford to pay any helpers now since the shutdowns, so I work till 1 in the morning most nights myself just to be ready to open next day for lunch,” said Hopkins, 75. He has a space in his shop with a computer to use for those without one, and long wooden tables where local kids can sit and get their homework done after he closes. He donates healthy food to Food Not Bombs, an LA group that feeds the homeless. Some locals refer to him as St. John. Hopkins feeds those loyal locals who have frequented his café for more than 20 years, as well as newbies. Greens, brown rice, baked yam with African peanut sauce, tofu and fresh green salad with his own special dressing is just one selection on his menu. His place is a one-stop shop for medicinal herbs, teas, fresh organic produce, rice, beans, legumes, kombucha, juices and incense. It allows like-minded people to connect, too. Bookending Hopkins’ café are several other shops. To Hopkins’ north is longtime landmark, Pizza Joe’s, which has condensed hours due to a decline in business. Next to Hopkins is Freddy’s Antiques, a shop filled with interesting collectibles, art, vintage clothing, perfumes, essential oils, crystals, sage bundles and a fascinating collection of eye candy. Guests can wander through looking into this display case and that cozy nook filled with delightful surprises. Yet, they, too, were burglarized right after the mandated closure of businesses. The front window and shop door were shattered and replaced. The loss was immeasurable at a time when all businesses’ futures were and still are uncertain, except, perhaps, for the big-name chains. The proprietor, Freddy Tenorio, laments, “The closure made me fall behind on financial responsibilities and made my life very stressful like many others during this pandemic.” He adds, “Thank you for all who support small business, and everyone stay safe and blessed. I’m surviving till the closure of this pandemic— with everyone’s support.” On Hopkins’ south side is a family-run African import and handmade goods shop called Rhythms of the Village. Wafting from the open door is the nostalgic fragrance of sandalwood, musk and patchouli incense. Guests’ senses are already being prepared for the cheerful yellows, oranges, reds and greens of Africa’s west coast, its caftans, dashikis and hand carved wooden sculptures. There are paintings, beads, drums—and friendly greetings. The proprietor, Baba Ochonie, is a wise septuagenarian who emigrated to the United States from Nigeria in 1969. Patrons may be captivated with his journey, philosophy of life, wisdom and spirituality. His son, Emeka, works with him, sewing alongside his mother, Marilyn, making African-styled clothing from small toddler to adult sizes for both genders. He also hosts drumming lessons at 4 p.m. Saturdays and is a professor at Cal State LA, teaching African history, language and culture. “Our business has suffered after having to close down for the first two months of mandated closures, but our hearts remained open and we rallied,” Onochie said. “The village thrives on community and togetherness. It wasn’t easy to close up shop and cancel our classes, but we wanted to keep our community safe. Our family worked around the clock sewing and distributing hundreds of masks keeping our business afloat and to keep people safe.” Onochie said the pandemic forced him to adapt to new technology like Zoom. “The pandemic was definitely scary for us as a small business, but in the end we were able to pivot and push ourselves to make it work and thrive more than ever in these unprecedented times,” Onochie said. “Soon we will return to our monthly multicultural events that we hold in the back parking lot. We have COVID-safe drive-in movies. We have Aztec and folklorico music and dancing, as well as African drumming. We continue to stay positive despite the pandemic.” Altadena Florists and The Boys’ Republic Charity Thrift Shop opening again for very limited hours as they are run by volunteers of a vulnerable age group. Sandwiched between Hopkins’ café and Onochie’s place is the now empty storefront still marked by its name on the marquee, the Dutch Oven Bakery. Its longtime owner died earlier this year leaving a void in the community’s morning coffee and doughnut needs with a slice of warm conversation on the side. But, those who love hunting through thrift shops for diamonds in the haystack, The Full Circle Thrift Shop is just on the other side of the florist and does not disappoint. Masks required along with social distancing, of course, but go, get out of the house. Do a little shopping therapy and support local small businesses. Grab lunch at Hopkins’ place, window shop at Freddy’s and Onochie’s, chat up some new friends and practice a little self-love. Take home a dozen yellow roses and feel good about supporting local small businesses. n

Twoheys: A LOCAL TREASURE REOPENS AMID UNCERTAINTY STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ
L
ast month, word had it that the legendary local favorite Twoheys was finally set to reopen at the former site of Carmine’s on Fair Oaks in South Pasadena. The news was a welcome surprise in the midst of the pandemic and the phased restrictions, as well as their toll on the greater Los Angeles dining scene. After witnessing long-standing institutions like Pacific Dining Car and Jerry’s Deli sink beneath the dark waves of the pandemic, the recent rebirth of Twoheys seems like a stroke of divine grace. A 43-year-old bastion of casual family dining—previously located on the border of Alhambra and Pasadena—Twoheys served generations of diners fixated on their iconic Stinko burgers and artisanal hot fudge sundaes. It’s been 18 months since the Alhambra location shuttered and though the new location was announced quickly thereafter, some locals had all but given up hope that the Stinko burger would ever live again. Take a breath of relief and put a clothespin on your nose: Twoheys is back! Version 2.0 is firmly planted in this century. The old nostalgic dining room décor that featured model trains, cars and Route 66 memorabilia has been archived and replaced with a sparkling and sophisticated black-and-white tile motif. “To honor the integrity of Twoheys, we really wanted to do it right,” said co-owner Tanya Christos. The reaction is either “wow” or “fabulous,” she added. Designed with two outdoor patio seating areas, their capacity was expanded by necessity but with no less elegance. Built into a quadrant of the parking lot to accommodate the indoor seating ban, the expansion did not delay the projected opening, but it was accomplished at an additional cost of more than $20,000. Christos revealed the frustration and confusion over the county’s pandemic restrictions in real time. It’s November 23, one day after the L.A. County Department of Health announced a minimum three-week cessation of outdoor dining, effective November 25.
“They keep telling us to implement all these safety procedures,” Christos said. “We added roofs over the patios and bought all these heaters. We’ve been investing in all of these resources and time and now we’re shut down.” Imposed in the wake of rapidly rising COVID-19 case counts countywide, the ban was just the capper of a weekend of notifications that began with the 10 p.m. curfew on restaurant and bar activity, followed by a reduction of 50% outdoor capacity or an increase of distanced table spacing from 6 feet to 8 feet. Then on November 22, the threatened three-week ban on outdoor dining was mandated throughout the county. After a soft opening on October 10, Twoheys formally opened on November 18 with a ribbon-cutting attended by Mayor Bob Joe of South Pasadena and much local fanfare. That’s seven days before the outdoor ban took effect. That’s also a newly hired front-of-house and server staff of 37 employees or roughly 80% of the new staff, who will be furloughed after just one week of employment—one day before Thanksgiving and a month before Christmas. Christos is joined by her partners, her husband, Jim Christos, and her brother, Greg Mallis. Jim takes the lead at Foothill, the popular Pasadena bistro that opened in November 2018 and serves as a satellite outpost for the family business. It’s also provided a useful model for managing just this sort of unexpected pandemic pivot. Twoheys has always been a family operation, starting when Jack Twohey opened the original location on Arroyo Parkway in Pasadena in 1943. Meanwhile, the MallisChristos clan found success with 14 Burger King franchises—including the last remnant of that empire, just up Fair Oaks in Pasadena—when they began talking to the scion Jerry Twohey about buying the operation in 1996-97, in lieu of any likely subsequent family succession. When they took over, the legacy they inherited became apparent quickly. “People were very, very loyal,” Jim said. “It redefined what a ‘regular customer’ was.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

They encountered patrons who routinely had three meals a day at Twoheys. Two of those regulars—Ed and Stella Armstrong of South Pasadena—were caught exiting after lunch in the new outdoor space. Tough customers? How did they find the new rendition? “It exceeded our expectations. We loved the old place, but this is terrific.” At about 3:25 p.m., Jim’s cellphone interrupts the conversation. The Pasadena Department of Health announced that Pasadena will not seek to enforce L.A. County’s three-week ban on outdoor dining. Although the ban will still affect Twoheys, it will still leave Foothill as an active lifeline, now tethered to its new sister in South Pas. It’s a modest but meaningful ray of hope. Twoheys now has a full bar and a custom cocktail menu, featuring the Stinktini, named for the eponymous burger icon. It’s a distinctive gin martini glossed with fino sherry and tart pickle juice. One minor note to the mixologist: swap the olives for a cocktail onion garnish. Consistent excellence was a hallmark of the old Twoheys and it is no different here. Chef Enrique Elias has helmed the kitchen for 23 years at Twoheys. He continues his service with his trusted co-executive chef Lalo Talamantes, a mere
eight-year veteran here. “We’re using local fresh ingredients. Everything is made from scratch,” Talamantes stressed. The team determined to open with the full menu and will maintain that even as they reluctantly pivot to takeout and delivery service, in the near term. By the way, at least 70% of the old menu survives. All the old favorites are here, conveniently flagged on the menu, as are a variety of vegetarian and vegan options. Besides the original Stinko burger ($7.95) and its fabled buttermilk-battered onion rings ($7.95), other old standbys remain, like Angus beef chili ($9.25); the Lindsey salad ($14.95) and the handcrafted meatloaf (17.95). Of course, it should go without saying that their famous sundaes ($6.95/ $8.95) are still the lynchpin of the soda fountain. The three housemade fudge toppings—bittersweet, milk chocolate and caramel—are also available by the jar to enjoy at home. That said, Talamantes and Christos collaborated in devising new dishes for the menu. On the breakfast menu (served until 3 p.m.), they point toward such items as fried chicken and waffles ($14.75), short rib hash ($15.95), and avocado toast offered in vegetarian and vegan formats ($9.95/ $10.95), as well as with smoked salmon ($13.95). Looking for novelty on the lunch and dinner menus? Try the spicy black bean hummus ($8.95), the short rib melt ($17.95), the Kurobuta pork chop ($20.75) or roasted root vegetables ($16.95). Though I would prefer to wax on with more lusciously detailed descriptions of the food, you should know you can’t go wrong here. And the family has more to say. “It’s been a true labor of love,” she said. “We knew we were going to get here. One of the most gratifying moments for me was having my parents—Paul and Mary Ann Mallis—see this. They were so much a part of the legacy and tradition of Twoheys.” What’s also important is actively supporting the return of this truly beloved local institution, now reopening in the midst of the latest wave of pandemic restrictions. “This closure of our patio not only affects the economic welfare of our business but also our family, the families of our employees and all our vendors,” she said. “This is devastating to so many.” She also suggests registering with and supporting the Independent Restaurant Coalition, which is lobbying Congress to adopt the Restaurant Relief Fund: saverestaurants.com.n “Thirty Two” Yohiike tells me he’s also giving me a bowl of steamed rice and a salad. “You know why?” he asks. “Because I like you!” n

Men’s Virility Restored in Clinical Trial; 275% More Blood Flow in 5 Minutes A newly improved version of America’s best-selling male performance enhancer gives 70-year-old men the ability and stamina they enjoyed in their 30’s. America’s best-selling sexual performance enhancer just got a lot better. It’s the latest breakthrough for nitric oxide – the molecule that makes E.D. woes fade and restores virility when it counts the most. Nitric oxide won the Nobel Prize in 1998. It’s why “the little blue pill” works. More than 200,000 studies confirm it’s the key to superior sexual performance. And this new discovery increases nitric oxide availability resulting in even quicker, stronger and longer-lasting performance. One double-blind, placebo-controlled study (the “gold-standard” of research) involved a group of 70-year-old-men. They didn’t exercise. They didn’t eat healthy. And researchers reported their “nitric oxide availability was almost totally compromised,” resulting in blood flow less than HALF of a man in peak sexual health. But only five minutes after the first dose their blood flow increased 275%, back to levels of a perfectly healthy 31-year-old man! “It’s amazing,” remarks nitric oxide expert Dr. Al Sears. “That’s like giving 70-year-old men the sexual power of 30-year-olds.”
WHY SO MUCH EXCITEMENT? Despite the billions men spend annually on older nitric oxide therapies, there’s one wellknown problem with them. They don’t always work. A very distinguished and awarded doctor practicing at a prestigious Massachusetts hospital who has studied Nitric Oxide for over 43 years states a “deficiency of bioactive nitric oxide… leads to impaired endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation.” In plain English, these older products may increase levels of nitric oxide. But that’s only half the battle. If it’s not bioactively available then your body can’t absorb it to produce an erection. Experts simply call it the nitric oxide “glitch.” And until now, there’s never been a solution.
NEXT GENERATION NITRIC OXIDE FORMULA FLYING OFF SHELVES Upon further research, America’s No. 1 men’s health expert Dr. Al Sears discovered certain nutrients fix this “glitch” resulting in 275% better blood flow.
He’s combined those nutrients with proven nitric oxide boosters in a new formula called Primal Max Red. In clinical trials, 5,000 mg is required for satisfying sexual performance. Primal Max Red contains a bigger, 9,000 mg per serving dose. It’s become so popular, he’s having trouble keeping it in stock. Dr. Sears is the author of more than 500 scientific papers. Thousands of people listened to him speak at the recent Palm Beach Health & Wellness Festival featuring Dr. Oz. NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath recently visited his clinic, the Sears Institute for Anti-Aging Medicine. Primal Max Red has only been available for a few months — but everyone who takes it reports a big difference. “I have the energy to have sex three times in one day, WOW! That has not happened in years. Oh, by the way I am 62,” says Jonathan K. from Birmingham, AL.
A new discovery that increases nitric oxide availability was recently proven in a clinical trial to boost blood flow 275%
“I measured my nitric oxide levels, you can buy a test kit from Amazon,” reports 48-year-old Jeff O. “Monday night I showed depleted.” Then he used ingredients in Primal Max Red and, “The results were off the charts. I first woke around 3 a.m. on Tuesday very excited. My nitric oxide levels measured at the top end of the range.”
HOW IT WORKS
FREE BONUS TESTOSTERONE BOOSTER
Loss of erection power starts with your blood vessels. Specifically, the inside layer called the endothelium where nitric oxide is made.
Every order also gets Dr. Sears testosterone boosting formula Primal Max Black for free.
The problem is various factors THICKEN your blood vessels as you age. This blocks availability causing the nitric oxide “glitch.” The result is difficulty in getting and sustaining a healthy erection. How bad is the problem? Researcher shows the typical 40-year-old man absorbs 50% less nitric oxide. At 50, that drops to 25%. And once you pass 60 just a measly 15% gets through. To make matters worse, nitric oxide levels start declining in your 30’s. And by 70, nitric oxide production is down an alarming 75%. Primal Max Red is the first formula to tackle both problems. Combining powerful nitric oxide boosters and a proven delivery mechanism that defeats the nitric oxide “glitch” resulting in 275% better blood flow. There’s not enough space here to fully explain how it works, so Dr. Sears will send anyone who orders Primal Max Red a free special report that explains everything.
MORE CLINICAL RESULTS Nutrients in Primal Max Red have logged impressive results. In a Journal of Applied Physiology study, one resulted in a 30 times MORE nitric oxide. And these increased levels lasted up to 12 hours.
“If you want passionate ‘rip your clothes off’ sex you had in your younger days, you need nitric oxide to get your erection going. And testosterone for energy and drive,” says Dr. Sears. “You get both with Primal Max Red and Primal Max Black.”
HOW TO GET PRIMAL MAX To secure free bottles of Primal Max Black and get the hot, new Primal Max Red formula, buyers should contact the Sears Health Hotline at 1-800-647-2669 within the next 48 hours. “It’s not available in drug stores yet,” says Dr. Sears. “The Hotline allows us to ship directly to the customer.” Dr. Sears feels so strongly about Primal Max, all orders are backed by a 100% money-back guarantee. “Just send me back the bottle and any unused product within 90 days from purchase date, and I’ll send you all your money back,” he says. The Hotline will be open for the next 48 hours. After that, the phone number will be shut down to allow them to restock. Call 1-800-647-2669 to secure your limited supply of Primal Max Red and free bottles of Primal Max Black. nership with the Dragon Kim Foundation, where she volunteers with Fostering the Arts. Her unique ability to mix her original works with covers of well-loved songs is a perfect fit for the program, which works to expose kids in the foster care system to opportunities in the arts. “Fostering the Arts provides music and performing arts classes to kids in the foster care system,” said Beyer who founded Fostering the Arts with classmate Leilani Rodriguez. “We worked with one facility in Pasadena and others Downtown. “We started it through the Dragon Kim Foundation, which is a great nonprofit organization. That provides high schoolers with money to help their community and what they’re passionate about. We started it during the pandemic because we didn’t know it would be a pandemic. When the pandemic started, we started these interactive videos, which we can send anywhere with a single link.” Beyer recited statistics from the top of her head: there are 37,000 foster youths in Los Angeles and Orange counties who don’t have access to the arts. Beyer and Rodriguez have the opportunity to arts classes, so they wanted to give the less fortunate the same chance, “It’s a vulnerable time, especially growing up,” she said. Beyer has also performed musical grams for first responders around Southern California, from Orange County to Downtown to Atwater Village. “We perform for firefighters and nurses and the elderly—anyone who is especially at risk right now,” she added. “We did it from afar and just seeing their smiles made me emotional.” Beyond her work in these volunteer and nonprofit settings, Beyer has participated in shows including the Berklee College of Music Songwriting Sessions and performs locally at venues such as the Alex Theatre, No Future Café and Descanso Gardens. While “Six Feet” is Beyer’s first official release, she has performed many original songs live. Beyer plans to release three more singles in 2021 and an album with her Philadelphia-based record label, Winding Way Records. “They’re super supportive and have given me great advice and promotion tactics,” she said. “I’m just so grateful to have that backbone. I know every 17 year old doesn’t have a record deal.” Her parents are thankful, too. Davis said she’s impressed with her daughter’s musical prowess. “She’s so passionate about music,” Davis said. “When we knew we were having a girl, we thought hopefully she’ll want to be a musician. “Even though she grew up in a family of musicians, if she wanted to go into veterinary medicine or architecture, we would have been fine with that.” Davis said, however, Beyer has been singing since she was 2 and quickly learned the piano. “She made up songs really early on,” she added. “She’s worked at perfecting her craft and all of that. It’s really a passion she’s working on.” n

Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held on Dec. 18, 2020 at 8:30 AM in Dept. No. 9 located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk.
