What will Pasadena do with the miracle in our midst? Last night I witnessed what I can only describe as a miraculous event. People were using the terms great, fantastic, incredible and other phrases that did not come near describing the miracle that has been in occurring at Pasadena’s Wilson Middle School. For the last 30 years a campus security guard has worked with the youngsters at Wilson to develop a performing arts program, the likes of which I have never seen. And he has done so after school, assisted by volunteers and working for free. This by itself is a miracle. As a program director, I’m aware of most of the issues that come with running music programs. I live in Pasadena and was not familiar with this performing arts program that most would consider one of the best in the country. How could that be? Could it be this program has not been presented as a Pasadena treasure because it goes against all conventional wisdom that requires certified experts and huge budgets for performing arts programs? Could it be that we are faced with a security guard who has dedicated his life to giving and has been able to inspire students, parents and volunteers for over 30 years for free? How could that possibly work? What I witnessed last night defies comprehension on so many levels. The first was the passion and dedication that has been instilled in these students. This security guard has organized middle school youngsters to perform at a high school level. The drum corps that performed the finale had a majority of girls who performed with the discipline and precision of a college drum corp. But that was only one component of a program that has developed performance in music, theater, dance and all the other aspects of theater. This may be a little too much for the educational establishment to accept; a successful program that is inspiring youngsters by the hundreds, developed and administered by a security guard. It just makes no sense! Wilson Middle School is scheduled to be closed. This security guard is out of a job. And one of the greatest performing 12.26.19 | PASADENAWEEKLY.COM | GREATER PASADENA’S FREE NEWS AND ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
arts programs in the country is about to end. As various organizations presented certificates of thanks to the security guard for over 30 years of dedication, and the incalculable positive impact he has had on thousands of families, there was not one mention of plans to continue this miracle. I was moved by this humble security guard’s final farewell, thanking God and the school for the opportunity to serve and give back. I am very interested to see how the Pasadena arts and educational communities respond to the threat of losing this humble, AfricanAmerican security guard who has created a miracle in our midst. JERRY BROWN FOR PRESIDENT
The entire list of Democratic candidates for president is discouraging if not outright depressing. Joe Biden will always be Mr. Touchy Feely. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren remind me of two ivory tower college professors way overdue for retirement. Pete Buttigieg is actually running for governor of Indiana. Amy Klobuchar needs to
stay in the Senate since the legislative branch was her choice for representing Minnesota. As for the rest of the candidates in the private sector, they need to run for city council first and then proceed from there. On the other hand California recently lost the best four-term governor and Oakland the best two-term mayor in their entire history. I am referring of course to Jerry Brown. He is a man of utmost integrity with an honest zeal to promote excellent quality of life for all Americans not just those aligned with the Democratic Party. And just as with former President Obama, he can add a vice presidential candidate who specializes in foreign affairs. Jerry, it’s time to throw your hat into the ring and declare your candidacy for president of the United States. The world and the country desperately need you to put an end to Trumpism and lead us back to a time of peace and prosperity. ~ JOE BIALEK VIA EMAIL

BIG BROTHER EVERYWHERE
‘PERMANENT RECORD’ IS ACCUSED SPY EDWARD SNOWDEN’S DEFENSE BRIEF TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE Sept. 11, 2001 is a reference point for Americans. Terrorists, mostly Saudis, hijacked four American airliners, inflicting 2,977 fatalities. As we mourned, national security bureaucrats contrived presidential directives permitting unrestricted access to intimate details of our private lives. The national security state expanded, shredding our Bill of Rights. Throughout, leaders assured us that privacy intrusions were subject to rigorous oversight. They were lying. The 9/11 events inspired many Americans to support the war on terror. One was Edward Snowden, a student at Maryland’s Anne Arundel Community College. His parents were federal employees with top security clearances. Snowden had just been certified as a Microsoft certified systems engineer. It was the path to service at the highest levels of our national security apparatus. “This was the brass ring, the guaranteed meal ticket.” But Snowden wanted to serve at the front. He joined the military, was injured during basic training and discharged. Undeterred, he continued to search for national security work. He became an information technology (IT) engineer for one of many contractors that service the national security apparatus. A top security clearance? No problem. Snowden sincerely believed his work was consistent with America’s constitutional principles. Domestic spying on innocent civilians? We would never do such a thing! There was one drawback. Snowden’s security clearance prevented him from discussing his work with the people closest to him, including Lindsay Mills, who later became his wife. She never had a clue about his work. Everything was classified. Snowden and Mills were young, in love, and had a steady paycheck. Snowden traveled the world, servicing the IT needs of America’s spy network at military installations, consulates and embassies. Life was good. The nature of Snowden’s work required he access the highest levels of the security machine. Documents needed to be opened, checked and closed again. Snowden soon discovered inconsistencies with what he was uncovering and what the surveillance agencies were saying. Programs named STELLERWIND and PRISM were monitoring our phone calls. Big Brother was everywhere. Snowden’s final IT stationing was in Hawaii at a refurbished bomb poof facility called “The Tunnel.” There he devised several software tools to crawl through data files and catalog programs surveilling communications. He copied them to thumb drives. He had to go public. He contacted journalist Glenn Greenwald through Greenwald’s colleague, filmmaker Laura Poitras. (This story is described in reviews of Greenwald’s Pulitzer Prize journalism, “No Place to Hide,” and Poitras’ Academy Award winning film, “Citizen Four”) Snowden flew to Hong Kong where he gave the thumb drives to Greenwald and Poitras. He then sought asylum in Ecuador attempting to fly there via Moscow and Havana. Obama’s Secretary of State John Kerry canceled his passport. He was trapped in Moscow. Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder then charged him with espionage. This prevents him from defending himself at trial. Snowden deserves a fair trial before a jury of peers, but the espionage charge assures that he will never get one. In essence, this book is Snowden’s defense brief to the American people. Concurrent with the release of Snowden’s book, the House of Representatives renewed domestic spying authority, sneaking it at the last minute into an omnibus federal spending bill intended to prevent a government shutdown. The entire Southern California congressional delegation supported this legislation. The Pasadena Star-News exposed the sneak attack, editorializing on Nov. 20, “We urge Congress to put the civil liberties of Americans ahead of political expediency moving forward.” Congressman Adam Schiff led the initial phase of impeachment proceedings against President Trump. Ironically, Trump’s defenders now charge that some of the evidence gathered against Trump was acquired by illegal surveillance. Edward Snowden presents an eloquent defense. All Americans should read his book, his defense brief. Snowden deserves a Congressional Medal of Honor, not an espionage trial. The most recent insult to our freedoms emanating from the Snowden case happened in Virginia last week. Federal Judge Liam O’Grady ruled that Snowden should be deprived of all royalties acquired from this book, according to a Dec. 19 New York Times story. Those who buy this book might consider making a supplemental donation to the American Civil Liberties Union, which serves as Snowden’s lawyer. “Permanent Record,” by Edward Snowden, Metropolitan Books, 352 pages; hardcover $17.99, paperback $18, Kindle $14.99, audio CD $33.08. n 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.02.20

THE ABCs OF EMPLOYMENT STATE LAW REGULATES GIG ECONOMY WHILE LIMITING NEWS FREELANCE WORK BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN AND KEVIN UHRICH
T
wo organizations representing freelance writers and press photographers have filed a lawsuit in federal court hoping to strike down a recently enacted law meant to protect drivers with ride-sharing services and others working in the largely unregulated “gig economy” but limits the amount of work journalists can do as independent contractors. In the lawsuit filed on Dec. 18 against state Attorney General Xavier Becerra, the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the National Press Photographers Association claim that Assembly Bill 5, authored by Democratic Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez of San Diego and overwhelming supported by both Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Democrat-controlled Legislature, violates the First and 14th amendments, which guarantee a free press and due process and equal protection under the law, respectively. Combined, the two associations have more than 650 members in California. The new law will also apply to app-based companies and other industries in which workers once considered independent contractors must be designated as employees and made eligible for such things as minimum wage and insurance benefits. In a separate lawsuit filed Monday, Dec. 30, workers for Uber and Postmates, a food delivery service, also claim 14th Amendment violations. If drivers in both companies are reclassified as employees, they would be protected by laws granting workers minimum wage and overtime pay. They would also be forced to pay into workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance. The companies would have to pay half of their payroll taxes for Medicare and Social Security, but they would also be told when to work and where. That could make the jobs less attractive to many people who seek those jobs because they want to set their own schedules. “AB5 is an irrational and unconstitutional statute designed to target and stifle workers and companies in the on-demand economy,” states the lawsuit, which also claims the law “irreparably harms network companies and app-based independent
service providers by denying their constitutional rights.” As it pertains to the news business, the law prevents freelance journalists from contributing more than 35 submissions a year to the same media outlet. Local newspapers and news websites, including the Pasadena Weekly and Pasadena Now, which rely heavily on freelancers, have been searching for ways to maintain freelancers and adhere to the law, which took effect on Jan. 1. “Dealing with California’s AB5 is challenging for already struggling community news media,” said James MacPhearson, who owns the website Pasadena Now. “Local newspapers have traditionally relied upon interns and freelance writers to balance their costs with the limited income implicit in their smaller hyper-local markets. The higher costs and loss of flexibility in assigning stories that AB 5 imposes are huge problems for publishers — and likely even worse for freelance writers.” Local Assemblyman Chris Holden (D-Pasadena) and State Sen. Anthony Portantino (D-Pasadena) voted for the bill. Neither man could be reached for comment by deadline Tuesday. Gonzalez’s bill passed along party lines, with a 56 to 15 vote in the Assembly and a 29 to 11 vote in the Senate. On Sept. 18, Newsom, a Democrat, signed the bill, which became law on New Year’s Day. Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont has introduced a similar federal bill supported by Sen. Cory Booker (D-New Jersey), one of his opponents in the presidential race. Democratic US Sens. and former Democratic presidential candidates Kristen Gillibrand (D-New York) and Kamala Harris (D-California), Becerra’s predecessor as state attorney general, have both said they support AB5. In August, Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg joined a rally of Uber and Lyft drivers supporting the bill. According to news reports, Buttigieg’s campaign has CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

‘PREMATURE, TRAGIC, AND UNNECESSARY’
Mary O’Connor
DAUGHTERS OF WOMAN SLAIN IN ALLEGED FOSTER CHILD DISPUTE FILE WRONGFUL DEATH LAWSUIT AGAINST COUNTY BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN
T
he daughters of a foster mother who was strangled in her Pasadena home in 2018 have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Los Angeles County. Lorie Hope and Tanya Juhasz claim that Mary Jean O’Connor, 43, was able to locate and murder their mother, 75-year-old Jeri Douglas, due to negligence on the part of employees with the LA County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), who allegedly provided O’Connor with confidential information about Douglas. “Beyond Douglas’ premature, tragic and unnecessary death, DCFS’s apparent failure to protect its foster parents is a violation of the public trust and unreasonably puts some of Los Angeles’ most vulnerable children and most selfless citizens at risk,” the lawsuit states. DCFS is the largest child protective services agency in the nation, responsible for ensuring the safety of 2 million children, according to its website. According to the lawsuit, O’Connor used the information provided by DCFS to track down Douglas. O’Connor allegedly called Douglas and claimed she was a DFCS employee that needed to get some paperwork signed. After she gained access to Douglas’ home, O’Connor allegedly choked her to death. There were indications of trauma to the slain woman’s upper body, police said. O’Connor is set to return to court today, Jan. 2, on
one count of murder. Pasadena police officers found Douglas’ body inside her condo in the 200 block South Madison Avenue in Pasadena on Dec. 17, 2018. Paramedics declared her dead at the scene. Authorities went to the home after one of Douglas’ daughters was unable to reach her mother for several days, according to Pasadena police. Over the past decade, the Pasadena Weekly published several stories about O’Connor’s fight with DCFS officials to keep her children. O’Connor had been deemed an unfit mother and her son was placed in Douglas’ care. Juhasz later adopted the boy. Later, O’Connor had a daughter that also became Douglas’ ward, according to a report by City News Service. It was not immediately known how many children O’Connor has. O’Connor was arrested in a mobile home in North Hollywood in late December 2018 and charged with one count of murder. She faces 25 years to life if convicted. She has pleaded not guilty. In a Jan. 17, 2019 interview with the Pasadena Weekly, O’Connor proclaimed her innocence. Her bail has been set at $2 million. “No, I didn’t do it, but I am not going to discuss it on a recorded phone line.” O’Connor said in a phone
conversation from the Pasadena jail. Subsequent attempts to reach her in custody were unsuccessful. O’Connor has a lengthy history of encounters with law enforcement and the foster care system dating back to at least 2006, when she was charged with solicitation of prostitution in Long Beach. In 2008, the Pasadena Weekly covered her successful battle to avoid eviction over having too many service animals in her apartment, a cased which she ultimately won. In 2010, she was the subject of a number of stories regarding her battle with DCFS officials over custody of two of her children. Since then, one other child has been placed with O’Connor’s mother, another is in DCFS custody, and yet another child’s whereabouts were unknown. In 2012, O’Connor and Marjorie McNary were ordered to vacate an Altadena property which the owners claimed they were occupying illegally. Authorities turned off the water in an attempt to convince the women to move out, which the pair eventually did. n

spent more than $10,000 on Uber and Lyft rides. So far, only Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden has not mentioned the law in the campaign. However, in a statement, Symone Sanders, his press secretary, said “Companies should not be able to misclassify workers as independent contractors in order to skirt labor laws.” The lawsuit filed two weeks ago states that “In violation of the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution, AB5 singles out ASJA’s and NPPA’s members who are writers, editors, still photographers, and visual journalists by drawing unconstitutional content-based distinctions about who can freelance — limiting certain speakers to 35 submissions per client, per year, and precluding some freelancers from making video recordings,” the lawsuit states. The lawsuit further argues that AB5 sets up separate laws for public speakers, allowing an exemption for public speakers who are engaged in marketing, graphic design, grant writing and fine arts. However, public speakers that engage in still photography, photojournalists, freelance writers and editors are subjected to the 35-item submission limitation. “By enforcing the irrational and arbitrary distinction among speaking professionals, defendant, acting under color of state law, irrationally and arbitrarily discriminates against plaintiffs’ members in violation of their right to equal protection of the laws,” the lawsuit states. The two organizations filed the lawsuit the day after VOX Media’s online SB Nation site announced it would no longer accept submissions from 200 freelancers. SB Nation covers sports in California. In a blog post, John Ness, director of SB Nation Team Brands, wrote a “bittersweet note” of thanks to the California freelancers. “In 2019, SB Nation contractors who live in California or contribute to California’s team sites did some truly amazing work: They ran 25 different communities, with all of the sites’ managers pulling together their own unique recipe for smart coverage. Contractors ran social media through the nerve-racking ups and downs of game time and moderated our sprawling communities. Together, over 200 people on California sites wrote thousands of blog posts in 2019 — pieces so diverse in their conception that it’s impossible to describe them en masse except to say they were written for a community of fellow fans.” Newspapers aren’t the only ones worried about complying with the new regulations. In 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.02.20
November, the California Trucking Association challenged the law, claiming that 70,000 independent truckers will be unable to work because of it. “AB5 has certainly presented unfortunate issues for our company and our fleet,” said Steve Crawford, general counsel of New Prime, a bonded freight shipping and trucking company. “Like many others in our peer group, we have obviously ceased affiliating with any new independent contractors that live in the state of California or would run exclusively intrastate.” New Prime is offering a relocation package to independent contractors working with the company. Crawford said California contractors are being offered $1,000 to $5,000 to leave the state and continue working for the carrier. The state law adopts an “ABC” test to determine employee status, according to the labor union-funded Economic Policy Institute (EPI). The test stipulates that workers may only be considered independent contractors when a business proves the workers are free from control and direction by the hiring company; perform work outside the usual course of business of the hiring entity; and are independently established in that trade, occupation, or business. The ABC test came out of a 10-year lawsuit that was decided by the state’s high court in 2018. In that lawsuit, Dynamex Operations West v. Superior Court, drivers for Dynamex argued they should be classified as employees because they were required to wear the company uniform and display its logo while providing their own vehicles and carrying all the costs associated with deliveries. The state Supreme Court agreed with the drivers, but the court’s ruling only applied to workers seeking minimum wage and overtime pay. It does not apply to benefits, breaks and paid parental leave. “Who knows how much hurt AB5 will inflict on community papers; in theory, it doesn’t have to,” said PW Contributing Music Editor Bliss Bowen, a longtime freelancer. “But in the 21st century the world is anything but perfect, and journalism’s bottom line reality dictates that AB5 will probably have a grave impact on the professionalism and stability of community newspapers. In this world, no matter how worthy its intent, AB5 will more heavily burden the already decimated ranks of editors and copy editors, and could damage the quality of community papers. It doesn’t have to be that way, and there are too many unknowns to predict anything with certainty, but conditions are in place for that to be the result.” n

VIVA 'TIO' IN HIS BID FOR THE WHITE HOUSE, BERNIE SANDERS FINDS LATINO SUPPORT IN DELEGATE-RICH CALIFORNIA
BY MARY REINHOLZ
A
fter Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders suffered a heart attack in October, more than a few bettors on political horse races wrote off the 78-year-old second time presidential hopeful as a viable contender. They’ll have to revise their talking points. Leftist warhorse Sanders, with his message of improved Medicare for all, free college tuition and a $15 an hour minimum wage, has soldiered on and appears to be thriving in a season of heightened discontent with Republican President Donald Trump, who awaits trial in the Senate after being impeached by the House of Representatives for an alleged abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, the white-haired democratic socialist even believes he has a shot at winning the California primary on March 3, Super Tuesday. From there, the White House seems in reach to him, that is if he maintains his commanding lead among Hispanic voters, the largest voting bloc in delegate-rich California and also across the nation. In the US,there are about 32 million Latinos projected to be eligible to vote in 2020, according to the Pew Research Center. Sanders clearly has taken note. “Brothers and sisters, it's not a great secret that California has more delegates to the Democratic National Convention than any other state,” he said last month to cheers at a Fresno campaign stop covered by Vice magazine. “That candidate who wins California has an excellent chance to win the nomination. And with your help, we are going to win California.” On Dec. 5, his goal didn't seem like a pipe dream. Sanders, who talks of a political revolution, had moved way ahead of centrist Joe Biden in the Golden State, according to a poll conducted for the Los Angeles Times by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies. It showed Sanders leading the California Democratic pack at 24 percent, Elizabeth Warren in second place at 22 percent (a statistical dead heat), and Biden third at 14 percent.(South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, practically pubescent in contrast to the three septuagenarians, was fourth at 12 percent.) None of Sanders' top-tier Democratic rivals come close to surpassing his popularity among Latinos, whose votes may determine the next occupant of the Oval Office. An estimated 74 percent of the approximately 7.7 million registered Latino voters in California, the nation's most populous state, are expected to cast ballots on or by Super Tuesday. Many will be spurred by their belief that racism and white supremacy are a threat to the country, according to a press release issued by the Latino Community Foundation in San Francisco, which commissioned a statewide poll of Latino voters conducted by Latino Decisions, a political opinion research company in Seattle. Their findings in November marked the 25th anniversary of the infamous Proposition 187, a California ballot initiative that voters approved in 1994 that would ban non-emergency public services like health care and education to undocumented immigrants. It was challenged within a day and soon struck down as unconstitutional in federal district court, but the aforementioned poll found that Latinos have been motivated to vote and run for office because of it. Recognizing this immense demographic and its sentiments, the Sanders' campaign in California has opened more field offices (five, including one in East Los Angeles) and collected more money from La10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.02.20
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders
tinos than any of his competitors — and three times as much as former President Obama did in 2008, according to The New York Times. Latinos generally liked Sanders four years ago when he arrived on the national campaign circuit virtually unknown outside of Vermont and his native Brooklyn, New York. But he didn't have the numbers to carry him over the top against Hillary Clinton who beat him for the Democratic nomination and in the California primary by 53.4 percent to Sanders' 45.7 percent. These days, however, there’s a real fervor for the now famous progressive pol. Some who adore him may have been influenced by fiery young left-wing Latinas like New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez who endorsed the elderly man sometimes affectionately called "Tio (Uncle) Bernie." Or they may have been inspired by pop singer Ariana Grande, who claims to have registered 20,000 voters at her concerts. She posed with Sanders at one of them, calling him, “My guy.” “The youth are coming out stronger for him” this time around, said Rafael Navar, California state director of the Sanders 2020 campaign in a phone conversation. “When you look at the problems in 2016, they've worsened with the inhabitant in the White House. We're facing a crisis of trust and no candidate has deeper trust than Bernie. We're focusing on young people and on all working class people. If you're working class, you're going to be with Bernie Sanders.” Navar said the Sanders' campaign in California has developed a “formidable infrastructure” on the ground that has made his candidate accessible at numerous events across the state, including a large noon rally May 31 for Sanders at the cavernous Pasadena Convention Center. People packed Exhibit Hall B, said to hold more than 2,500 seats. NBC reported that some of Sanders' supporters lined up as early as 8:30 a.m. Danny DeVito was there to warm up the crowd. Older Latinos involved in Sanders' California campaign also clearly “feel the Bern.” On Saturday, Dec. 7, Lu P. Cruz, a 64-year-old special education teacher in Montebello, drove to Alhambra to canvas the neighborhood and “to knock on doors on Main Street” to promote a vote for Sanders with a community group called San Gabriel Neighbors for Peace and Justice. “I've been doing this for three months and I'm passionate about it,” she said. “People all across the state are knocking on doors and calling people just for him. Bernie is awesome,” she continued. “We have a flag. We have a placard. And we show up for two hours. People honk for health care, for his Medicare for all (plan).” Cruz noted that Sanders' call for free college tuition and eliminating college debt appealed to her daughter “who's worried about paying off her student loan. She figures at this rate, she'll finish paying it off when she's 62.” As for her personal feeling for Sanders, Cruz said: “He's the first candidate that I ever met who truly cares for other people. You have candidates who come here, shake your hand, go to where they have to go and then they forget you. They don't seem to care about the homelessness and the high cost of living in California.” Cruz's boyfriend, Jim Vega, 62, a real estate broker, shares her belief that Sanders can win the presidency. “I think he has real strength,” Vega said. “And now he has greater name recognition — among Latinos especially and now
blacks. So I'm hopeful we have a shot at grabbing California on Super Tuesday.” Long-time Pasadena resident Robert Nelson, a retired senior research scientist at JPL, has been active in the local Democratic Club for 30 years and was twice a delegate to national conventions. He currently sits on the state Democratic Party's executive board. He makes it plain that Sanders is not going to have a walk in the park in his quest for the presidency. “It isn't going to be easy,” said Nelson, an occassional opinion writer for this newspaper. “There will be a host of problems because the Democratic Party has a strong Wall Street component and they will do everything they can to stop him. They want to see Joe Biden or Pete Buttigieg (win). They fear a wealth tax. (Sanders) is going to have many Dems who think it may be better to vote for Trump a second time around. That's what we fear.” Others fear that Sanders will be red baited by extremist right-wing Trump supporters not known for gentility Los Angeles City Councilman Gilbert Cedillo, who supports Sanders but has not formally endorsed him, said ugliness is to be expected from Trumpworld. “No one is safe from lies and slander from Trump and his acolytes,” said Cedillo. “It doesn't matter if you're leftist or centrist or just a Democrat. But Bernie Sanders has a core constituency. It's very enthusiastic, very working class. It's solid. These elements are key. We're not in 2016. We know how to win.” Cedillo pointed out that the socialism advocated by Sanders and his supporters is “the socialism of Sweden and Denmark. It’s about free education, equality, affordable housing, health care — like all the other industrial nations have.” Even so, Jamie Ragaldo, professor emeritus of political science at Cal State, Los Angeles said that socialists historically have had a hard time getting elected by US voters. “The odds are stacked against a socialist so it's going to be daunting for Sanders,” he said. “But if there was any time to look at an alternative, including a socialist, this is the time.” Ragaldo said that California Sen. Kamala Harris' recent departure from the presidential race might not translate into many black votes for Sanders, noting that African American support has largely gravitated to former Vice President Joe Biden. “If either Elizabeth or Bernie can't crack into the black vote, that spells trouble” for them, he said. “They need the Latino vote. And Bernie does much better there than Elizabeth, and better than Buttigieg." He noted that Warren has received backing from progressives who supported Sanders in 2016 and could split the progressive vote. “But Bernie has done a good job in keeping his youth base across the country and in California. It's hard to imagine that youth who were with him four years ago and who were alienated and angry with the political status quo would not come back.” Montebello City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem Salvador Melendez is 29 and one of about 80 elected officials in California who reportedly have expressed support for Sanders. Melendez, who is also a law student, voted for Sanders during his first run for president “because he was talking about issues that nobody else was, and now they all are,” he said. Added Melendez, “I support him because of what he stands for.” n 01.02.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 11

EVERYONE CAN ENJOY TASTY TRADITIONAL DISHES AT LUCIANO’S RISTORANTE BY EVELYN GARCIA | PHOTOS BY: DANNY LIAO
I
t’s no secret pasta is one of my favorite meals. I love that different variations of staple ingredients like pasta, cheeses, tomatoes, vegetables, sauces and spices can create a plethora of unique and equally amazing dishes and tastes. It had been some time since I satisfied my craving for Italian food, so I went in search of a new restaurant to try. Luciano’s Ristorante was a quick and easy choice, located on West California Boulevard in Pasadena, across the street from Huntington Hospital. Upon entering, it’s immediately clear they don’t shy away from embracing all things traditionally Italian. Red-checkered tablecloths, kitschy figurines of Italian chefs, a signed Tony Bennett poster, and large chalkboards displaying their vast menu items all adorned the interior. I was surprised to learn it has been there for 18 years, still run by the same family, Luciano father and son (the first names of both men). A friend and I didn’t want to take too long to peruse the menu, as it was just an hour before closing, so we hastily ordered the cheese bread ($5.95) and the meatball and sausage combination ($4.95) to start. The cheese bread had a layer of garlic underneath and was melted to perfection. The meatball and sausage were both so good, I’m still not sure which of the two I liked best. At first it was the meatball, seasoned well and a good size, but then a few more nibbles of the sausage and it was impossible to decide. They are served in a bed of marinara sauce, making it the perfect dip for the cheese bread, which was a pleasant discovery. I noticed immediately they offer vegetarian lasagna ($14.59), and while there were 12 other dishes on the menu I wanted to try, lasagna is my favorite. Layers and layers of pasta, with cheeses and sauces wedged between … Is there anything better? Sure, meat would make it all the more flavorful, but the sign on their front window reads “Home of the fresh vegetarian dishes,” so it was meant to be. Each entree is served with garlic bread — as if I needed more carbs — but I ate the perfectly toasted, fluffy pieces nonetheless. This time around dipping into the marinara was
12 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.02.20
necessary because of the overabundance of sauce. While lasagna should be well coated in both sauce and cheese, I felt like a large portion of my meal was spent eating through that rather than the pasta itself. It was still delicious, but would be perfect if there was a slightly more even ratio of sauce to layers of noodles. We also ordered the Luciano Masterpiece Deluxe Pizza (from $18.99 to $21.99) which is topped with extra cheese, pepperoni, fresh mushrooms, black olives, onions, green bell peppers, and Italian sausage. It was great as most pizza is, and packed with flavor and texture, yet we expected it to have more of a lasting impression than it did. Regardless, this is the pizza to order when visiting Luciano’s. Other notable dishes are the sandwiches ($9.25, melted sandwiches $10) that we wanted to order but they were out of bread, including the meatball sandwich, the traditional pastrami, salsiccia (sausage and melted mozzarella) and the Philly cheese steak with mayo, sautéed mushrooms, onions and melted cheese. Paninis ($8.25) can be ordered on a French roll or wheat bread and are garnished with lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, pickles, mustard, and Italian dressing. They include ham and two cheeses, turkey breast and Swiss and mozzarella, Italian salami and two cheeses, a veggie avocado with two cheeses. Their specials are displayed outside upon entering and offer a choice of spaghetti, mostaccioli, jumbo ravioli, tortellini, gnocchi, or white spaghetti with a small soup or salad, garlic bread, and a soft drink, all for $14.99. For the price, it can’t get better than that. Personally, I am looking forward to trying manicotti ($12.59) and cream penne pasta carbonara ($15.95) on my next couple of visits. Luciano’s also caters, making it the perfect place for family whether dining in or ordering out. With pasta made in-house, they offer friendly customer service, a cozy place to dine, and best of all tasty traditional dishes for everyone to enjoy. n A version of this story first appeared in our Nov. 15, 2018 edition. JOHNNY BURGIN BRINGS A LIFETIME OF THE BLUES TO ARCADIA SATURDAY BY ANDRE COLEMAN AND KEVIN UHRICH
PHOTO: Bárbara Sánchez Palomero
A
native of Pennsylvania who grew up in Mississippi and attended the University of Chicago before trading in his books for an education at “Blues University,” better known as the club scene on the West Side of Chicago, Johnny Burgin has become one of the country’s foremost blues guitarists and harmonica players. Known among fans and peers alike as “The Worldwide West Side Guitar Man,” Burgin has earned his reputation as both a hard-charging blues master and an inexhaustible performer by playing up to as many as 250 shows a year in Europe, Japan and American cities from coast to coast. Since 1997, the 50-year-old Burgin has released seven recordings under his own name and played on numerous other recordings as a sideman to many blues legends. This weekend, Burgin will be visiting Southern California, taking the stage at the Arcadia Blues Club Saturday night. “I’m a straight up Chicago blues player and I learned from the folks who were part of the great black blues scene there, where it was part of the culture,” Burgin recalls. “I love to connect with the audience and get everybody feeling the same thing.” Burgin says he got his start while still in college due to a chance encounter in 1988 with fellow campus deejay and harp player David Waldman, who played and recorded with Tail Dragger, Smokey Smothers and other blues artists. Waldman turned him on to the Howlin’ Wolf-style singer Dragger at a club on the Windy City’s West Side. Dragger, Burgin says, took the youngster under his wing and gave him his first professional gigs. Within a few years, Dragger hired Burgin, who, according to his online bio, began playing at West Side clubs with such seasoned performers as Eddie Burks, Mary Lane, Johnny B. Moore, Lurrie Bell, Little Mack Simmons, Little Arthur Duncan, Jimmy Dawkins and Johnny Littlejohn. From those experiences, Burgin said he learned quickly and went on to tour and and perform with such blues legends as Pinetop Perkins and Sam Lay. Since then, he’s been praised by the Cascade Blues Association for his “stunning guitar playing — the pure Chicago styled sound,” and his fans seem to enjoy Burgin’s take on the
intense, stripped-down “West Side Sound” of Otis Rush, Magic Sam and Buddy Guy. Burgin rattles off the names of people who have influenced him and his work over the years in such a way that one might think they were actually members of his family. “My favorite player is Earl Hooker,” Burgin says. “I also love Jimmy Rogers, Eddie Taylor and Luther Tucker. … I played with Dave and Louis Meyers who played on some of Little Walter’s most famous recordings, and I toured with Sam Lay for two years when I was in my early 20s coast to coast. Sam played with Howlin’ Wolf and Paul Butterfield,” he notes proudly. But it is his father who he credits with his budding interest in performing and playing guitar. “My dad was an actor and a musician and I was in a play ‘Bus Stop’ where I had to play a guitar on stage for a part. After that, I played guitar all the time,” he recalls. “I never thought I’d end up a musician though — I thought I’d be a teacher or a journalist.” Burgin’s currently a Delmark and Vizztone recording artist. His most recent CD is “Johnny Burgin Live,” featuring Charlie Musselwhite, which debuted at No. 3 on the Living Blues radio chart. Burgin was nominated for a BMA for Best Traditional Blues CD of 2017 for “Howlin’ at Greaseland,” a Howlin’ Wolf tribute “I was playing every week on the North Side, just passing the hat, with some older blues masters who were kind of obscure. But once I graduated I started playing four or five nights a week, and I played the Chicago Blues Festival with some of those guys we’d be passing the hat with,” Burgin says. “I called my parents and told them I made my rent in an hour and a half. I just kept saying, I’ll try it for a year, then the year ended and I said, let’s do it another year, and here we are. I love the lifestyle, the camaraderie and the music.” n Johnny Burgin performs Saturday at Arcadia Blues Club, 16 E. Huntington Drive, Arcadia. Doors open at 7 p.m. The show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10. For more information, call (626) 447-9349 or visit arcadiabluesclub.com.

Lightly funky grooves from Anderson .Paak’s road band go down easy on the band’s own album, where they sometimes call to mind a stoned Ohio Players. .Paak puts in a raspy appearance on “Gidget,” and drummer Callum Connor sings lead on the synth-tapping “Rene” and joins T. Nava for “Oslo,” but the remaining 11 tracks depend on a parade of guest vocalists for distinction. T.I. shakes things up with his frenetic rap on “Cut Me a Break,” and “On Sight” benefits from tension between Kadhja Bonet’s watery coo and JID’s echoing rap. Overall, though, results are uneven. thefreenationals.com

Faith, Justice and Environmental Cataclysm TOSHI REAGON PERFORMS SELECTIONS FROM HER OPERATIC ADAPTATION OF OCTAVIA BUTLER’S VISIONARY CLI-FI NOVEL AT THE HUNTINGTON TUESDAY
S
et in 2024, Pasadena-raised author Octavia E. Butler’s acclaimed novel “Parable of the Sower” no longer feels futuristic. When it was published in 1993, reviewers described it as a warning cry. Now its themes of self-created community, environmental devastation, water scarcity, economic inequality, homelessness, and corporatization of society and politics dominate our daily news. Musician and activist Toshi Reagon cited the ongoing relevance of Butler’s writing when she announced that she and her mother, social justice activist and Sweet Honey in the Rock founder Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, had adapted “Parable of the Sower” into a folk opera, one that weaves together blues, EDM, funk, gospel, rock and soul. It also draws a bit on the 2030s-set “Parable of the Talents,” the second of Butler’s “Earthseed” novels, and received its unconventionally staged world premiere in New York in November 2017 and boasted a cast of 14 actors and singers plus a five-piece band and Reagon, singing and playing acoustic guitar. Tuesday night Reagon will perform selections from that opera
14 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.02.20
during an event highlighting connections between present-day LA and Butler’s “Earthseed” series at the Huntington, where Butler’s papers are archived. Reagon will also join a discussion with Fuller Theological Seminary Ph.D. student Phil Allen, City of Hope data scientist Shelley De Leon, 2018 Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate Sophie Kim, Art|Religion|Culture co-executive director and Butler-fascinated theology/ethics Ph.D. student Tamisha Tyler, and multimedia artist and Space Exploration Architecture cofounder Melodie Yashar. Emceed by Claudia L. Peña, the event will be presented in association with UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance (Reagon is taking the full production of “Parable of the Sower” to UCLA’s Royce Hall on March 7). As a literary work, “Parable of the Sower” was a foundational brick in the cli-fi or climate fiction genre. It tracks an agnostic preacher’s daughter named Lauren who believes “God is change,” not a fundamentalist rule-keeper, and who struggles to conceal the hyper-empathy that makes her feel the pain of others in the gated LAarea community where her family
subsists after an environmental cataclysm. When a violent attack decimates their outpost, Lauren must rely on her own vision of faith and justice to lead a tiny crew of survivors to safety and their own community in Northern California. Onstage, “Parable of the Sower” extends the tradition of political theatre, a la classics such as Marc Blitzstein and Orson Welles’ corruption-minded 1937 play with music “The Cradle Will Rock,” the Vietnam-shadowed 1960s hippie musical “Hair,” and even Anna Deavere Smith’s nonmusical documentary theatre works (“Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992,” “Notes From the Field: Doing Time in Education”). It is also of a piece with Reagon’s eclectic, socially conscious music and family tradition. At press time the event was filled but a waiting list was available. n The President’s Series presents Octavia E. Butler’s Parables: A Music Talk With Toshi Reagon in Rothenberg Hall at the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, 7:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7; call (626) 405-2100 for waiting list details. Warmly melodic folk-pop from a native Southern Californian now settled in Portland, Maine, after a decade in New York. Mishell’s search for home and authentic living drives the sultry “Hurricane” (“As long as we’re together we’ll be home”), “Keep an Open Heart” and the gracefully fingerpicked title track. The latter stands out with a lyric that, unlike some others, feels personal (“Do you feel safe every day 9 to 5/ Do you feel wrong inside or do you feel alive”); the hooky “Complicated Heart” is another highlight. Mishell plays Hotel Café in Hollywood Thursday, Jan. 2. nataliemishell.com

Intriguing pastiche of jazz, gospel and socially conscious spoken word from Chicago multimedia artist Locks and a game ensemble of musicians (bells, clarinet, percussion). Angel Bat Dawid’s clarinet and Arif Smith’s hypnotic percussion converse around samples and a dynamically blended choir during “Sounds Like Now” (“Separate not equal/ Power to the government/ Never to the people/ Movie show apocalypse/ We’re living through the sequel”) and the nationalism-minded “Solar Power”; “The Colors That You Bring” gains urgency from an insistent groove and pop melody. Worthy and thought-provoking. intlanthem.com
LARRY FLEET, Workin’ Hard (Big Loud): HHH
Last year, the Tennessee native issued a few soulfully sung tracks reflecting his admiration for Merle Haggard and Marvin Gaye. His workingclass roots inform this major label country debut, made with Jake Owen producer Joey Moi, but excepting the smartly detailed title track it’s safer, mostly celebrating moments of respite (“Somethin’ Cold, Somewhere Hot”). “Lied About Love” rolls on a reassuring groove, while simple pleasures animate “Tied Down” and the nostalgic “Boys With Nothin’.” Moi’s production smoothes out Fleet’s relatable edges, but the songs pique interest in Fleet’s next move. larryfleet.com

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Check with CSLB to Avoid Home Repair Scams Is the thought of making needed home repairs overwhelming? It doesn’t need to be, as long as you’re cautious and know what signs to watch out for. Seniors are often the targets of door-todoor scammers who offer “good deals” for home improvement services or repairs. These people may be well-dressed, clean-cut, polite and personable, but don’t fall for their sweet talk and stories. Before you give anyone your hard-earned money, check their qualifications with the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). A simple phone call or computer click will give you peace of mind that the person you are allowing into your home is licensed and insured, and has no record of discipline with CSLB. Don’t let a solicitor pressure you into making a quick decision. Take your time and ask family members or friends if they know a reputable contractor, and then verify the license status. http://www.checkthe licensefirst.com/
