I am frustrated by the resistance movement, along with all the emails I receive stating our most important goal is to oust Trump. I agree that Trump is hideous, but he is a symptom of a much larger problem, a corrupt SYSTEM that the “resistance movement” blindly ignores. What is important to recognize is how our government has changed, from a democracy of the people, to an oligarchy of corporations. It is exemplified through corrupt crony capitalism, or a “shadow state” of unelected power ruled by weapons contractors and other Fortune 500 companies. Together, they work for their bottom line of huge profits and “full-spectrum-dominance,” while they hide their taxes through loopholes and shelters overseas, contributing nothing to American democracy. Further, they use and control departments of government, the mainstream media and militarized police connected to “das Homeland” to surveil and control each of us. So much control do they seem to have that they will prevent you from feeding the homeless on the streets where you live! This immoral, ill-compassionate system was not the creation of Donald Trump. It is a system he inherited (and which he cooperates and colludes with) that has been building its corrupt state ever so slowly, getting us to where we are today — frogs simmering in its polluted waters. 01.09.20 | PASADENAWEEKLY.COM | GREATER PASADENA’S FREE NEWS AND ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

BYPRODUCTS OF ABUSE
People who harass and threaten homeless people are the same type of people who create homelessness. They are mentally ill, even if they may be high-achieving wealthy homeowners. There’s probably unresolved childhood trauma that leaves them feeling powerless, so they do what most power and control seekers do: they wake up early and hit the streets (or show up at their offices) looking for someone vulnerable to abuse. With homeless people they know they’ll get away with it. There’s a scapegoat mechanism triggered when the fear and anger we feel is met with someone safe enough to blame. This is
why we fight with loved ones — they are safe. It would not be safe to express similar emotions to a hostile person who lives next door, so we transfer our anger toward someone who is unlikely to strike back. Think about how tired you are when you get home and flop down on the couch. A homeless person has no safe place to rest, and their constant exposure to the elements is exhausting. They all have PTSD. And many of them are homeless because they had to escape abuse. Imagine how badly you’d have to be abused to choose sleeping out on the sidewalk indefinitely. I am an heir to a wealthy family, but families like mine can get nasty, fight over money, and psychologically and emotionally abuse one another. I’ve ended up homeless twice in my life. Other times I’ve paid $2,000 to $3,000 in monthly rent while working high-paying jobs, driving fancy cars I later had to sleep in. I can tell you that the main cause of homelessness is not some form of disease or unexplained mental illness. Homelessness is a symptom of psychological or physical trauma that has not been treated. Toxic families are as common as crazy neighbors who harass, emotionally attack, physically threaten or otherwise cause disease. In other words, homelessness is a byproduct of abusive behavior … but the real disease is carried and spread by people who lack empathy and become addicted
to the feeling of power and control they get by hurting others. Be kind to each other. And God bless everyone. If you yearn for power and control, then act more like God and learn to love others. Otherwise you may just be a jerk who just thinks he is God in his neighborhood. ~ COLEY CARNEGIE VIA EMAIL
GOOD VS. BAD
It would be very interesting to see Michael Bloomberg as the Democratic nominee for president, Donald Trump as the Republican nominee, and Tom Steyer as the Green Party nominee. I can just see the debate conversation: “I know what is best for billionaires,” says Trump; “No you don’t,” says Steyer; “You are both wrong,” says Bloomberg. If he wins the nomination, a slogan for the Bloomberg campaign might be: “It takes a good billionaire to beat a bad billionaire!” ~ ROBERT MATANO VIA EMAIL

•OPINION• BY KEVIN UHRICH
FROM BAD TO WORSE AB5 COULD HAVE A DEVASTATING EFFECT ON LOCAL JOURNALISM
Call it a case of the best intentions gone awry. Or maybe lawmakers did not have enough information with which to craft a law that would affect all independent contractors by forcing all types of businesses — from Uber and Lyft and interstate trucking services to newspapers and magazines — to essentially hire those workers as actual employees. Or just call Assembly Bill 5 what it really is: a failure to fully appreciate the nature of workers in today’s so-called “gig economy,” who factor into many industries in which freelancers — those once ineligible for minimum wage, overtime pay, health care and other employer-provided benefits — are used on a regular basis. Or is there actually something sinister afoot here? Authored by Democratic Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez of San Diego, AB5 is based on the result of of a lawsuit, Dynamex Operations West v. Los Angeles County Superior Court, which was finally decided by the state Supreme Court in 2018. In that decision, state justices used the “ABC” test to determine an employee’s status. The test stipulates that workers may only be considered independent contractors when a business proves A. the workers are free from control and direction by the hiring company, B. work is performed outside the usual course of business of the hiring entity, and C. those workers are independently established in that trade, occupation, or business. In the Dynamex case, workers argued they should be classified as employees because they were required to wear the company uniform and display its logo while providing their own vehicles and carrying all the costs associated with deliveries. However, that court’s ruling only applied to workers seeking minimum wage and overtime pay. Gonzalez’s union-backed measure was supported by most Democrats in office — including those representing Pasadena and those running for president — in largely party line votes in both the Assembly and the Senate, then signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom. For many people seeking benefits and minimum wage and overtime pay, the law makes sense. But for many, many others, particularly those in the news business, an industry which for decades has operated with the help of freelance writers and photographers who did not really desire those extra benefits, it spells potential ruin of not only their careers but the very industry being inappropriately regulated by the Legislature. In an effort to have the law either stricken or amended so as to do away with the fixed number of 35 freelance submissions a year per media outlet before the law’s requirements kick in, the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the National Press Photographers Association have sued the state in federal court, claiming the new law violates the First and 14th amendments, which, respectively, guarantee a free press and due process and equal protection under the law. In a separate federal lawsuit filed on Dec. 30, workers for Uber and Postmates, a food delivery service, also claim 14th Amendment violations. If drivers with both companies are reclassified as employees, they would be protected by laws granting workers minimum wage and overtime pay. But they would also be forced to pay into workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance. The companies would have to pay half of their payroll taxes for Medicare and Social Security, but they would also be told when to work and where. That could make the jobs less attractive to many people who seek those jobs because they want to set their own schedules. “AB5 is an irrational and unconstitutional statute designed to target and stifle workers and companies in the on-demand economy,” states that lawsuit, which also claims the law “irreparably harms network companies and app-based independent service providers by denying their constitutional rights.” The law has also upset independent truckers, with the California Trucking Association filing suit against the state, claiming that 70,000 drivers will be unable to work because of AB5. The new law will also apply to app-based companies and other industries in which workers once considered independent contractors must be designated as employees and made eligible for such things as minimum wage, overtime pay and insurance benefits. As it pertains to the news business, the law prevents freelance journalists from contributing more than 35 submissions a year to the same media outlet. When it comes to news outlets, “The higher costs and loss of flexibility in assigning stories that AB5 imposes are huge problems for publishers — and likely even worse for freelance writers,” said Pasadena Now Publisher James MacPhearson. As PW Contributing Music Editor Bliss Bowen said, “[N]o matter how worthy its intent, AB5 will more heavily burden the already decimated ranks of editors and copy editors, and could damage the quality of community papers.” And no one wants that. Or do they? n 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.16.20

MAYOR TERRY TORNEK SET TO DELIVER ‘BROADER’ THAN USUAL STATE OF THE CITY SPEECH BY ANDRE COLEMAN
A
ccording to the Pasadena City Charter, the mayor shall present a thematic budget message for the upcoming fiscal year to the City Council no later than February. Mayor Terry Tornek will fulfill that mandate at 7 p.m. tonight, Jan. 16, at John Muir High School, 1905 Lincoln Ave., Pasadena, when he delivers his fifth annual state of the city address. This year the speech will be more positive than in year’s past due largely to passage of Measure I, a three-quarter cent tax increase supported by Tornek that passed by nearly 68 percent of the vote in 2018. According to city Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian, a preview of the speech was not available. “This year, because we have been stabilized because of Measure I, it will be a much broader look,” Derderian said. “We have the luxury of being more comprehensive. It’ll be looking at the next 10 years, and how the city should invest, and its greatest needs.” Measure I brings about $21 million into the city’s coffers every year. According to election materials, that money will be used to bankroll vital city services. Through Measure J, a companion measure to Measure I, the city allocates to the Pasadena Unified School District up to $7 million annually from Measure I proceeds. “The state-of-the-city is the Mayor’s opportunity to highlight updates on Measure I, infrastructure, budgets, housing, public safety and specific accomplishments that set us on a solid path for a strong future,” said Derderian. “Additionally,” she said, “several committees have been coordinated this year to highlight and educate our community on very important initiatives that will take place this year. The year 2020 is the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote. Throughout 2020, Pasadena will celebrate this hard-fought victory and highlight the positive impact women continue to have in our city and country. Community stakeholders and city staff have also formed a Complete Count Committee for Census 2020. The results will have a major impact on our community for generations to come. It affects our representation in government, how money is invested in local programs, and services supporting our most vulnerable population comprised of the elderly, children and people with disabilities. In March 2020 you can fill out your census on line at 2020census.gov.” Tornek may also delve into the city’s current affordable housing crisis, and new housing laws taking effect this year which are designed to speed up housing construction by watering down local housing and zoning ordinances. Lawmakers have passed dozens of bills aimed at boosting funding for affordable housing, easing development restrictions and helping renters facing rising costs. The bills cap the number of public hearings on new projects, prohibits local governments from increasing fees on projects once an application is submitted and stops urban areas from enacting moratoriums on new construction. Prior speeches painted a daunting picture of the city’s financial situation. In 2018, Tornek told an audience at that event that CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

GOODBYE, NATIVE SON LOCAL ARCHITECT AND ‘MY CITY’ AUTHOR DAVID WOLF FOUND DEAD IN ALTADENA HOME BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN
D
avid Wolf, an architectural historian, archivist and urbanist, was found dead at his home in Altadena on Dec. 21, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Wolf, who was born in Pasadena, would have turned 55 on New Year’s Day. According to writer Matt Hormann, Wolf, who authored a well written and beautifully illustrated book on the beginning of Pasadena’s City Beautiful movement titled “My City: The Model to Emulate,” harnessed Pasadena’s past to help create the image of a better future. “The potential is to have what planning doesn’t have today, which is to get people excited about the future once again, instead of fearing it,” Wolf told Hormann in a 2015 interview that appeared in the Pasadena Weekly. “It’s an opportunity for us to lead once again in the realm of city planning using a simple proven solution.” That solution is based on the work of George A. Damon. From 1914 to 1917, Damon led the Pasadena City Beautiful movement, which was part of a larger national trend. The movement was a reform philosophy of architecture and urban planning that flourished during the 1890s and early 1900s. It was a part of the progressive social reform movement in North America under the leadership of the upper-middle class concerned with poor living conditions in all major cities. The movement, which was originally associated mainly with Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and Washington, DC, promoted beauty as a means to create moral and civic virtue among urban populations. Advocates of the philosophy believed that such beautification could increase the quality of life.
“Much of Pasadena’s model city reputation can be found in the City Beautiful Movement and the work of George Damon, Dean of Engineering,” Wolf wrote in his book. “In creating a more participatory process during the early visioning stages of planning, community aspirations were shared, finances were measured and an ambitious set of proposals were set in motion.” The movement mixed engineering, architecture and civic improvement to create a hub of novel, egalitarian planning ideas. It culminated in an exhibit that featured a horticultural hall, city planning studio, and “Pasadena Projects & Problems” space. Visitors were even encouraged to submit photos of “undesirable structures, unkempt vacant lots, billboards, and other blights to the beauty of our city” beneath a sign that read: “We Protest — These Things are Not Beautiful.” “David Wolf was a wonderful inspiration to those who knew him,” said Tim Brick, managing director of the Arroyo Seco Foundation, which strives to preserve the Arroyo Seco, a stream that flows from the San Gabriel Mountains to downtown Los Angeles. “He really captured the spirit of the Arroyo and of Pasadena through his remarkable research and presentations. His vision and his zeal stand as his lasting legacy.” According to his book, “My City,” Wolf was raised on the edge of Pasadena’s Arroyo Seco, close to the landmark Colorado Street Bridge. A graduate of John Muir High School, he was in the first class to be educated under the landmark decision that instituted court-ordered desegregation for the first time west of the Mississippi River. After graduating from John Muir, Wolf attended
UC Berkeley and graduated with a Masters Degree in architecture. Wolf worked in planning, architecture, sculpture and architectural history. He also taught a host of architects, artists and planners from around the world, developing a unique approach to simplifying the process in design in the emerging digital age. According to an alert by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, Wolf suffered from depression and was last seen about 6 a.m. Nov. 29, near his home on Taos Road in Altadena, where he lived alone. His death is considered a suicide. No foul play is suspected. “This is shocking and distressing,” said Sue Mossman, executive director of of Pasadena Heritage. “I have been viewing his extraordinary work over the past year and been so taken with his research skills and out-of-the-box thinking about how about the past and present and future could interweave.” In 2014 and 2016, Wolf gave separate “My City” presentations at the Hale Solar Observatory in Pasadena, attended by City Council members John Kennedy and Andy Wilson, and Mayor Terry Tornek, who became strong backers of the project. According to Hormann, Kennedy later discussed “My City” with President Barack Obama at a fundraising dinner in 2015, and later sent a copy to the White House. “David was passionate about Pasadena and its roots in the City Beautiful Movement of nearly 100 years ago,” said Marsha Rood former development administrator for the city. “David wanted to bring Pasadena closer to those roots in planning for its future. Pasadena has lost a great champion.” n

police, fire, recreation and every other department in the city would have reduce services in the next few years because the resources were not available to meet the city’s infrastructure needs. At that speech, Tornek revealed “The Big Ask,” urging voters to approve his sales tax increase plan, from which one quarter of the money would be sent to the ailing Pasadena Unified School District. At that time, the PUSD was fighting to prevent a takeover of the district by the Los Angeles Office of Education due its budget deficits. In 2019, Tornek spoke of the generally good financial condition of the city, and in past years, after addressing the city’s budgetary condition, has given updates about other issues impacting the city, such as use of the Arroyo Seco, the homeless crisis, construction projects and the demise of the 710 freeway extension. This is Tornek’s fifth State of the City speech and the 21st in the city’s history. Former Mayor Bill Bogaard delivered the first 16. Unlike Bogaard, who was the city’s first elected mayor in the modern era, Tornek does not title his speeches. All of Tornek’s speeches have been delivered at public schools and this year is 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.16.20
no different, with the event being held at John Muir High School. “I always give the speech at a public school,” Tornek said. “I want to get people up to John Muir so they can find out what’s going on with Muir High School and PCC.” Pasadena City College has operated a satellite campus called PCC Northwest on the Muir campus since 2018. The speech comes during an election year. Tornek faces a tough challenge from longtime District 5 Councilman Victor Gordo. Former City Commissioner Jason Hardin and businessman Major Williams are also running for the mayor’s seat. The quartet appeared on stage for the first time last Wednesday at PCC in a political debate sponsored by the political action group known as ACT. Tornek highlighted the accomplishments of his first term at that event, including the city’s financial stability, the strengthening of PUSD, work done on improving the environment and the city’s quality of life, and lowering crime. ACT voted to endorse Tornek the next day. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The program starts at 7 p.m. Carpools are encouraged. DR. JAME ADAMS BLENDS KNOWLEDGE OF WESTERN MEDICINE WITH CHUMASH HERBAL REMEDIES TO HELP PEOPLE IN PAIN
BY CHRISTOPHER NYERGES
r. James Adams, who teaches pharmacology at USC, also teaches students about the healing techniques used by the Chumash people as a part of his regular classes. Adams earned his PhD in comparative pharmacology and toxicology at UC San Francisco in 1981, and since then he’s written more than 200 articles for both average readers and and academic audiences. Adams became interested in the medicinal uses of native plants in 1994. It was then that he was taking his son out on Boy Scout walks and began to realize that all the native plants they encountered had been used by local Native Americans. Adams then set out to find a Native American herbalist to learn from. After a lengthy search, he found Chumash medicine woman Cecilia Garcia. Adams became Garcia's student in 1998, and he studied the intricacies and underlying belief structures of the Chumash healing traditions. “I was her apprentice for 14 years,” Adams said. “I worked with her on every aspect of healing — making medicine, gathering medicine, leading hikes, leading talks, leading religious ceremonies and more. She taught me about the medicine and the Chumash religion. She taught me how to interview patients and reach a diagnosis. She taught me the traditional way to treat a patient. We spent many hours and days together, sometimes just the two of us out hiking. We went from Davis to Ensenada and many places in between.” Nature's Way Adams and Garcia eventually collaborated to produce the book “Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West,” which was published in 2005. The fully illustrated book, which describes the chemistry of the plants that were used by the Chumash for medicine, and generally used throughout the American West. Since their collaboration, Adams and Garcia led about 100 walks and workshops to teach about the Native American use of healing herbs, until Garcia’s untimely death in 2012. Adams was also instructed by Ted Garcia (chief of the Chumash), his brother Dennis Garcia, their father Ted Garcia, Frank Lemos and many other Chumash people. CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

MEDICAL MAN ON A MISSION CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9
Adams points out that he is accepted by Ted Garcia and the Chumash people who follow him as a healer, but that there are some Chumash people who do not accept him. I asked Dr. Adams whether he was cynical of the medical profession, or whether he believes that doctors are more concerned about making a buck than actually healing a patient. Neither, he told me. “Doctors are simply working on a false preconceived notion that herbs are not strong enough to deal with certain physical conditions. But believe me, some herbs are just as strong as any patent medicines out there.” He adds that there is a lot of good medicine being practiced, but not with the use of opioids for pain. In fact, their use is not only counter-productive, but sometimes deadly, with at least 67,000 people dying every year in the US from their misuse, and that figure continues to rise. According to Adams, doctors work from the premise that people should try to control pain by using the drugs that affect the brain. They tell the patient, let’s try x, or y, or z, and when those don’t work, they try opioids, like Vicodin. Adams explained that opioids are compounds synthesized based upon opium’s chemistry. This is highly addictive, and has not been shown to cure chronic pain. This is all based on the notion that you need to cure the pain in your brain, but the brain only processes pain signals from the skin. More than 95 percent of the body’s pain receptors are in the skin. Why have doctors gotten this so wrong, I ask. He tells me that the prevailing theory is still that the brain is the center of all pain, and that pain can be combated by giving the patient drugs that suppress pain detectors in the brain. “That’s the prevailing notion,” Adams said. “But the pain comes from the skin,” he tells me. The brain might process that pain, but you still need to treat the pain in the skin. “When a child skins their knee, do they quickly grab their brain, or do they grab their knee?” he asks wryly. That form of treatment may have been based on the best of intentions, but it is not working, Adams said. “Think of a carpenter who can’t do a job with his hammer. What does he do? He gets a bigger hammer. In medicine, pain is often treated with ibuprofen and naproxen. But when that doesn’t work, the doctor has a bigger hammer — opioids. And some doctors just go right to that bigger hammer.” Cecilia Garcia taught Adams, among other things, about the traditional ways of dealing with pain. “Cecilia taught me how to make and use liniments from black sage and sagebrush. And as a result of working with several hundred patients over the years, I have seen that these are great pain killers, which also have the ability to deal with chronic pain.” Adams added science to his collaboration with Garcia by explaining medically why the Chumash systems work. 10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.16.20
“Most modern Western-trained people do not want to believe that the Indian medicines are efficacious. I have learned how these herbs worked. It took me a lot longer to learn how they cure chronic pain,” he said, adding that he has written several academic papers on this topic. Two of his papers are “Chronic pain – can it be cured?” which appeared in the Journal of Pharmaceutics and Drug Development, and “Control of pain with topical plant medicines,” which was published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine. “Everyone says they feel pain in their organs, but it is almost always in the skin. So you put this herb liniment from native herbs on your skin, and the pain is gone. Even kidney stone pain can be treated with the sage brush liniment,” he explains. “We need to learn how to treat pain correctly, and we are not doing that correctly with oral medicines,” said Adams. “When I was a boy, everyone knew how to take care of themselves when it came to the most basic everyday medical issues, like using sassafras, yerba santa, and other common herbs. But no one seems to know any of this anymore.” Through his writings and teachings, Dr. Adams hopes to bring back the notion that the body can heal itself if we allow it to do so, and that everyone should take charge of their health, and not assume that the doctor can “heal” us. Sage and Sagebrush Adams readily admits that there are some cases that his black sage or sage brush liniment doesn’t entirely cure, though there are no side effects either, as in the case of opioids. He cites an example of a 77-year-old woman with terrible hip arthritis. “She has been making the sagebrush liniment and applying it every day for the last five years, and she says that it keeps her going. Her pain is relieved. And there are dozens of other patients who treat themselves this way, and none have ever reported any incidents of toxicity.” Adams pointed out that there were six top herbs used by the Chumash in healing: Mugwort, sagebrush, white sage, black sage, bay and yerba santa. These are described in detail in their book. Though there is a comprehensive depth to Dr. Adams’ scope of teaching, he usually emphasizes that he’s not healing anyone, that’s he’s only making it possible for the body to heal itself. Adams has also been compiling actual testimonials to demonstrate the efficacy of the healing method that he practices. “Even if a person is told by their doctor that there is nothing the medical profession can do, and that you will die, I say, you are still alive. Your body can heal itself. Don’t give up,” Adams said. “Learn to live in balance.” n For information about Adams’ class schedule and his books, contact him at www.abeduspress.com. Christopher Nyerges is the author of “Guide to Wild Foods” and other books on self-reliance and the outdoors. He conducts regular wild food classes. He can be reached at SchoolofSelf-Reliance.com.

KONBI HAS COMPETITION WITH EGREGIOUSLY EXCELLENT EGG SALAD AT PILLOW TALK ON SOUTH LAKE STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ “Gangsters have stolen my secret recipe for egg salad …,” Woody Allen, “What’s Up Tiger Lily?” 1966. In September, Bon Appetite magazine proclaimed Konbi — a tiny corner sandwich shop in Echo Park — the No. 1 Restaurant in America. Only open 8 a.m to 3 p.m., with narrow counter seating for 10 and an active take-out window, Konbi had already been regularly attracting gangs of foodies at the window and lines at the door since it opened in October 2018. The concept of Akira Akuto and Nick Montgomery, both Dave Chang/ Momofuku alums, Konbi’s menu focus is the “sando” which is a sandwich style modeled on those available at Japanese convenience stores. Their meticulously concocted egg salad is served on thick untoasted white bread, sliced into three delicate sections and arranged to display the bright orange orb of a lightly boiled yolk. The sectioned sandwich is then wedged into a form-fitting square white cardboard box and sealed with an off-set black paper logo ribbon. The effect is elegant simplicity and the sandwich itself is undeniably and consistently delicious. Arguably, the timing of Bon Appetite’s recognition of Konbi was fortuitous for Pillow Talk, a new café that had just opened in Pasadena on South Lake Avenue in late August. As originally reported by Farley Elliot in Eater LA, the menu at Pillow Talk features sandos that bare more than a close resemblance to the preparation, presentation and packaging of those offered at Konbi. Inspiration? Influence? Imitation? Bald piracy? We decided Pasadena readers deserved to know more. Is the quality comparable between the two egg salads? bread is sliced thinner but is a bit longer than Konbi’s. Konbi’s salad preparation is perhaps seasoned with more depth but Pillow Talk’s version is in no way bland. It’s not a direct knock-off except in the presentation and packaging, served in three slices in a square box and black paper ribbon, this aspect of Pillow Talk’s debt to Konbi is difficult to dispute. That said, Konbi's box is actually square and now uses a logo sticker, where as Pillow Talk's box is a bit more of a rectangle. Still, the menus and atmospheres are distinctly different. Though both places offer a selection of only four sandos (priced between $8 and $14), Konbi offers an array of vegetable-based side dishes including pickles, potato salad, and chilled tofu. Konbi’s house-made croissants have garnered raves as well and apparently sell out quickly each morning. The narrow 10-seat counter space has the feel of a cozy Izakaya. Pillow Talk seats twice that at tables in an immaculate, bright shop that is perhaps twice the size of Konbi. While Pillow Talk offers no side dish options, they trend toward dessert with a selection of six different individual, layered “mousse-cakes” ($7-$8). A recent “Dessert Combo” special allows a selection of any four for $26. Pillow Talk also features croissants and pastries as well as a more detailed curation of various lattes and pourovers than Konbi. (That said, the crowd of hipsters on South Lake are ganged in front of T Pumps, the boba tea joint just next door …) But we’re here for a sandwich! Both Konbi and Pillow Talk feature nearly identical Egg Salad and Tomagoyaki (layered omelet) sandos. The price points differ slightly though with the layered omelet priced at $11 at Konbi and $8 at Pillow Talk, while the fabled egg salad is $10 at both places. Konbi adds both Pork Katsu and Eggplant Katsu at $14 and $11 respectively, while Pillow Talk features an intriguing Okonomiaki option at $13 and “Guaca Mango” with avocado, mango, and cayenne at $10. The Okonomiaki sando at Pillow Talk is a riff on the dish sometimes referred to as “Japanese pizza.” This unique sando version is basically a light slab of tomagoyaki layered with thin-sliced bacon, cabbage, and Kewpie mayo. Perhaps not quite as unctuously rich as Konbi’s Pork Katsu but no less tasty and satisfying. As to Konbi’s “influence” on Pillow Talk, Konbi has never claimed to have engineered an original product, claiming inspiration from the sandos served at the Japanese convenience store chain Lawson. Frankly, having spent a bit of time in Little Tokyo recently, this style of sandwich -- though presented far less pretentiously — is plainly and routinely available at more than a couple of Japanese bakeries and delis downtown, at less than half the price. We would never try to dissuade anyone from lining up for a seat at Konbi. It’s rarified status and tight, mindful compositions are always worth an Instagram post. That said, if we just want a truly tasty Japanese-style sandwich (or a good mousse-cake for that matter) save your gas money and the drive to Echo Park. Enjoy an unusually good sandwich and support a neighborhood business! Try Pillow Talk. They can use some love! 14 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.16.20

DUAL RECOVERY SELF-HELP PROGRAM HELPS MEMBERS COPE WITH BOTH CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY AND MENTAL ILLNESS
Dear Patti, My husband Kyle opened up to me and acknowledged that he abuses alcohol and drugs and admitted he thinks he’s an addict. I was so relieved as I’ve known about his problem for a long time. He talked to me first and then confided in his older sister Terri. Instead of being supportive and positive and helping us devise some sort of plan, Terri was negative. Terri knows that Kyle has suffered from serious depression for a long time. She told us that when someone has both an emotional problem and a substance abuse problem it’s extremely difficult to go into treatment for addiction. She explained that of course she wants him to get help for his substance problem but that she’s afraid treatment will make his depression worse. I know that Terri is trying to help Kyle but all it did was scare and discourage him. I believe that in the long run, getting sober will help Kyle’s depression. And as far as the treatment being difficult, a lot of addicts have depression or other mental disorders and they become sober. Any light you can shed on the situation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you — Krystal Dear Krystal, It sounds like Kyle might have what is called a dual diagnosis, which is when a person has one or more mental disorders in addition to one or more substance use disorders. If Kyle is diagnosed with dual disorders, he will need the treatment and care of a professional trained in working with both substance abuse and mental health disorders, I understand Terri’s concern. In the past, traditional treatment for substance addiction has been characteristically intense and confrontational, designed to break down denial, defensiveness and resistance in the addict. Many treatment methods for mental illness diagnoses were more supportive and nonthreatening, allowing patients to let down their defenses in a slower,
16 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.16.20
gentler pace. Therefore, people receiving traditional substance abuse treatment for dual diagnosis were often conflicting and confusing. However, substance abuse professionals grew more and more concerned over the increase in addiction and relapse rates in the addict population, conventional treatment methods came under greater scrutiny and more effective ways to work with addicts were sought. Currently therapists working with patients with co-occurring illnesses have learned how to give treatment more successfully. Addicts come with differing levels of readiness and an addiction specialist’s goal is to reinforce change and avoid confrontation while setting limits. In the case of relapse it is understood that rather than relay it as a failure, it is a need to modify treatment as recovery is an ongoing process. Many people with concurrent disorders have a heightened sense of shame and a feeling of separateness because they have both a substance abuse disorder and mental illness. There is often an increased feeling of powerlessness and a oppressive silence about their suffering, making it even more difficult to ask for and receive the help they need. This is all the more reason to encourage and support Kyle to reach out for assistance. It’s often asked which developed initially, the substance abuse or the mental disorder. There’s no single answer. In some cases, the psychiatric problem develops first and the addiction is a way to try to self medicate. For others it’s the addiction problem that originally develops, contributing to the beginning of depression and anxiety. Motivational interviewing is a type of treatment that is nonjudgmental, non-confrontational and non-adversarial treatment. The strategy is to elicit the addict’s own awareness of his problems, risks and potential consequences of continuing the addiction and then help provide motivation to achieve the future he envisions. Another popular program for treating dual diagnosis is the Dual Diagnosis Recovery Counseling (DDRC) model. First priority is to stabilize any acute symptoms of mental illness and substance abuse. Then improve coping skills and techniques to redirect urges to use and manage symptoms associated with the mental illness. Then the task is dealing with setbacks and relapses and lastly is recovery and maintenance of recovery. In the late 1980s, Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA) was created. This self-help program based on the principles of the traditional 12 steps helps members with their recovery/capacity to cope with both chemical dependency and mental illness. DRA has two requirements for membership; a desire to stop using alcohol and other intoxicating drugs and a desire to manage emotional or psychiatric illness in a healthy and constructive way. Continue to offer love, acceptance and support to Kyle as he goes through dual recovery. n Patti Carmalt-Vener, a faculty member with the Southern California Society for Intensive Short Term Psychotherapy, has been a psychotherapist in private practice for 23 years and has an office in Pasadena. • ARTS & CULTURE • SEEDS OF PEACE DESCANSO GARDENS TO RECEIVE OFFSPRING OF TREE THAT SURVIVED HIROSHIMA BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN
O
n Aug. 6, 1945 the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, killing at least 145,000 people and turning nearly five square miles into smoldering rubble. Now the decendant of one of the survivors of that attack is coming to Descanso Gardens, 1418 Decanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge. At 10 a.m. Sunday, two Hiroshima Survivor Trees will be presented to Descanso Gardens by Rotary Heiwa’s Hiroshima Survivor Tree Group, consisting of Rotary members in Japan, the United States and Russia. Heiwa is the Japanese word for peace. The persimmon trees grew from seeds from trees that survived the deadly blast nearly 75 years ago, “We are very honored to be receiving these trees,” Descanso Gardens Executive Director Julianne Rooke said in a prepared statement. “They have a beautiful story to tell and will be great additions to our Japanese Garden.” Three days after the bomb, known as Fat Man, was dropped on Hiroshima, another atomic bomb, Little Boy, was dropped on Nagasaki, killing and estimated 80,000 people. The atomic aggression came less than a month after the Allied Powers called for the unconditional surrender of Imperial Japanese Forces in the Potsdam Declaration of July 26, 1945. As part of that ultimatum, President Harry S. Truman warned Japan that the country would face “prompt and utter destruction” if its military forces did not surrender, a demand that Japan’s leaders ignored. After the blast, many experts thought nothing would grow in Hiroshima for decades, but a year later trunks of fallen trees began sprouting new shoots. According to a press release issued by Descanso Gardens, survivors of the bombing described feeling a sense of hope when they saw the shoots growing from trees they thought to be dead. Seeds were taken from those trees and now two persimmon trees that have grown from those seeds will soon have homes at Descanso Gardens. “I live in La Cañada and am quite aware of Descanso Gardens’ mission and the importance in the community,” said Makiko Nakasone, charter president of the Rotary Club of Little Tokyo and a member of the Rotary’s Heiwa group. “We thought the gardens would take good care of the Survivor Trees for many years to come as a symbol of peace and hope.” One of the trees will be placed in Descanso’s Japanese Garden. The second one will be placed near the entrance to that area. Other survivor trees can be found at the Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden in Pasadena, the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, and at Verdugo Woodland and Monte Vista elementary schools, and at Wilson Middle School, all three schools located in Glendale. “We are honored they picked us,” said Jennifer Errico, marketing manager at Descanso Gardens. “We think its a really nice addition for our Japanese Garden. We don’t acquire plants often, and when we do we are very careful about how they fit in. … Two or three feet tall and we are getting two of them. Persimmon trees, really beautiful.” Descanso Gardens is a unique Southern California landscape distinguished by its specialized botanic collections, historical significance, and rare natural beauty. According to its website, the garden’s mission is to practice exemplary stewardship of Descanso’s distinctive character and assets; offer people an experience close to nature; and cultivate understanding of the natural world and people’s place in it through inspiration, education and example. n 01.16.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 17

MARCUS KING, El Dorado (Fantasy/Easy Eye): HHH½
The 23-year-old South Carolinian has been generating buzz with fierce, fluid guitar playing that understandably caught the ears of producer Dan Auerbach and drives his first officially solo album (i.e., not under his band name), which is less funky than earlier recordings but easily bridges soul, Southern rock, blues and jam-band grooves. King’s silk-and-grit vocals are just as thrilling in these crisp, dynamic arrangements. If stomping single “The Well” and “Say You Will” rock the party, the soul sway of “Wildflowers & Wine” and “Beautiful Stranger” brings dancers together and demonstrates King’s balladeer mettle. Sidestepping Convention OJAI ARTIST LICITY COLLINS MIXES FOLK SONGS WITH SPOKEN WORD AT THE BLUE GUITAR
L
istening to pop music (i.e., pop, rap, blues, country, rock, soul, etc.) throughout our lives, we’ve been trained to expect verse-chorus-verse-chorus compositional structures, with occasional bridges and/or changed-up keys to intensify emotions. Rare is the song that stops the music with a spoken phrase delivered for dramatic effect, and interrupting a concert’s musical flow with spoken word often propels audience members toward the exit. Jazz and classical music move more freely beyond those strictures, but in the pop universe musical momentum lags when those compositional expectations are upended. Ojai artist Licity Collins seems intent on sidestepping conventional constructs. Her 2019 album “Love Courage Yes: Live at the Underground Exchange” blends spoken word with folk and rock numbers performed with a band. She performs at the Blue Guitar Wednesday night.
Collins is more of a journalistic poet than a singer; her pitchy vocal phrasing is shaped mostly by the emotion rather than the rhythm of her words. As she explained to NPR during an interview last year, as an artist she doesn’t differentiate much between music and poetry. Growing up in metropolitan Washington, DC, Collins played cello in a youth orchestra while absorbing influences and arrangement ideas from rock music. That attention to milieu still informs her creative sensibility. “Love Courage Yes” offers live renditions of songs such as “Staring at the Dark” and the fingerpicked “Turn” from her first album, 2018’s “One Girl Town,” with diaristic interludes that alternate between amusing (“Applause is Weird”) and selfanalyzing (“Regrets,” “The Hotel Room,” about the shady, dispiriting place she occupied when her mother died that made her “feel
like a mole”). Those shifts can be off-putting if spoken word isn’t your thing, but Collins projects confidence in tandem with shared vulnerability, and her delivery and themes — choices made, connections missed, losses sustained — lend themselves to audience interaction. More than giving a show, she seems most interested in reaching headline-battered listeners searching for uplift: “When you come face to face with love, the most courageous thing you can do is say, ‘Yes.’” n Wine & Song presents Licity Collins at the Blue Guitar, Arroyo Seco Golf Course, 1055 Lohman Lane, South Pasadena, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22; $17/$12. Veteran sideman Bernie Larsen is the evening’s other featured artist, and Russian singer-songwriter Igor Bulanov will also perform. Tickets are available at deepmix. thundertix.com/events/161805/saleable_seats?performance_id=2465903. Info: (323) 769-3500. licitycollins.com, blueguitar.club
Muscular, rocking blues from a crew of roadseasoned veterans: guitarist Kid Ramos, drummer Jimi Bott, frontman Brian Templeton, bassist Willie J. Campbell and keyboardist Anthony Geraci. “If You Be My Baby” and the slow-burning “Loan Me a Dime” respectfully nod to tradition while showcasing Geraci’s and Ramos’ tasty playing, but meatier rockers (“Road of Love,” the title track) are the main course. The band’s readying a followup to this Blues Music Award-nominated debut with producer Mike Zito, some of whose material will hopefully emerge during their set at the Mint in LA Friday, Jan. 17. theprovenones.com
DELLA MAE, Headlight (Rounder/Concord): HHHH
“Walking in the footsteps of a woman who’s endured/ The silence of the sisters who look nothing like her/ … You are a headlight in this dark night.” Affirmation and uplift are recurring themes throughout the Grammy-nominated, all-female bluegrass outfit’s fourth album, stirringly led by the Dr. Christine Blasey Ford-inspired title track. The McCrary Sisters support frontwoman Celia Woodsmith’s gutsy vocals with gospel harmonies, and producer Dan Knobler refreshes their traditional sound with drums, electric guitar and keyboards. That amplifies the import of cleverly written tracks such as the bluesy “Working,” “The Odds of Getting Even,” the infertility-inspired “Waiting for You,” and “The Long Game.” Brava. dellamae.com
FUTUREBIRDS, Teamwork (VL/4L): HHH Ten years into their career, the Georgia-based psychedelic country-rockers keep things loose and amiable as a backyard jam, even while acknowledging the challenges of sustaining hope and relationships amid environmental devastation and modern life’s pernicious negativity. Love is championed as a natural fix, amid sunny guitars, lap steel and occasional saxophone. Highlights: “Trippin’,” the dreamy “Waiting on a Call,” the hummable “Killing Ground” (“Through the smoke and ashes/ The whole world’s burning down/ We flicker like a fire/ Slow dance on the killing ground”). futurebirdsmusic.com
