ommy, my legs hurt.” I was crying in the foyer of our home in Huron, South Dakota, after coming home from school. During second grade, I walked to and from school like all-town kids did. It was at least 20 below zero on many winter days, yet my school required girls to wear dresses. My knees and thighs, now absent of color, stung and ached! My mother, a usually chill person — adjective used advisedly — looked enraged as she rolled down my tights. “That’s it! You’re wearing pants to school tomorrow.” If you look up frostbite, toes, fingers, noses and cheeks are mentioned as likely targets. There’s nary a word about little girls’ legs on the Great Plains of the U.S. I wore pants to school the next day, but rules are rules — I was sent home to change. Mom sent me back with pants under a dress. I sat in the principal’s office while my mother and the white male principal wrangled. My mom finally prevailed, and the little girls got to wear pants as long as they were worn under skirts or dresses. It was also stipulated that they remove their trousers in the changing room for school and only put them back on for walks home. Geez, Louise! Who possibly benefited from girls showing their legs in the dead of winter? Dress codes have always discriminated against girls; the boys simply jumped in their dungarees and ran to school and back. Freedom! Why am I connecting frostbite, grade school and mother to March, Women’s History Month? You don’t have to hold your breath. Historically, women of all colors have been rejected, discriminated against, burdened by, and harassed based on their looks and attire. I have a longer view of women’s history than many of my friends, since that’s been my passion for decades. March has been Women’s History Month ever since the early ’80s. The 501(c)(3) board I currently serve on, aptly named the National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA), was founded by the unstoppable Molly Murphy MacGregor. She rebelled against the virtual invisibility of women in history and vowed to devote her life to bringing women into the curriculum at all levels of schooling. And now I’ve taken up the torch with my dedication to making a big deal out of Women’s History Month. I’m envious of February, Black History Month because big corporations have decided it’s good business to promote and sponsor it. They also have the big bucks to do so. Do they apportion similar funds to Women’s History Month? No, they do not, and it grinds my

butt. Half of the world’s population qualifies, and people often assume that if the women are missing, it’s because they are not important. However, I am pleased that the Black history advocates are thoroughly inclusive of women. We all benefit from knowing about the histories of women of color. Lying in bed one night recently, my husband pointed out a heartbreaking and eye-opening Washington Post op-ed by high school student Micaela Wells. She felt compelled to point out that her history books in Advanced Placement U.S. history classes devote a single paragraph to women, and that’s it. She then gave her peers a survey and found they could only name a handful of significant women, and always the same ones. And, my friends, that’s deep in our psyche. For the most part, their parents and teachers don’t notice that women are missing either, or if they notice, they have not done anything practical to include women as a matter of course. In the spirit of Micaela’s findings, I challenge you to learn about women in various fields who you may not have heard of before. My goal is to inspire and/or infuriate, and I’m including men in this, too. Another place to look is your family history, whether written or anecdotal. My gentle, introverted, infuriated mother changed grade school for us gals, at least in Huron, South Dakota, and you’ll never read about her in a book. Are there women in your family who did something to shake up the status quo? You don’t know if you don’t ask! My editor, Christina Fuoco-Karasinski, and I have two challenges for March that start right now. If I plug March events only in March, it’s too late for most folks to participate. For adults: Does your corporation have a speaker’s series? Does your union commemorate women? Your bank or service organization? Your place of worship? Send me the suggestions you’ve given to these places and actually implemented. We’ll consider publication if you write a 600- to 800-word essay about it. If you’re in high school, I am opening up a contest for you to write and submit an essay on Women’s History Month that’s at least 600 words and no more than 850. “Why Women’s History is Important” is a good place to start for an essay. Send it to me no later than midnight on Wednesday, Jan. 26 — go! During March, the winner(s) will be published here in my “Consider This…” slot. Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! Contact her at ellen@beautybitesbeast.com.

Breaking News: Freedom is Ours Now

Editor:

America is looking straight into the eyes of a tornado-style political year in 2022 and an even bigger one in 2024. How did democracies in the past handle situations where deeply divisive personalities on the political scene were disruptive to peace and good order? Ancient democracies like Athens and Rome practiced preventative medicine. Their legal systems required that populist demagogues interested in personal rule be sidelined from political activity. Those excitable personalities were actually required to leave their native soil for a number of years until they could remember how to act like good citizens. A famous case of ostracism/exile was Marcius Coriolanus in Rome. The practice was so important to ancient democracies that even the best leaders who stumbled badly just once were affected. For example, Moses in ancient democratic Israel was excused from the Promised Land when he alienated God and civil society near the end of the Exodus journey in the wilderness. Modern America did a similar thing in the early West. Sheriffs “warned out” disruptive criminals, advising them to leave town and territory or face more severe consequences. Even monarchies like that of Queen Elizabeth I understood the need for wild political figures to be reigned in or, actually, reigned out. When Sir Walter Raleigh got too rambunctious on British soil, the queen essentially exiled him to explore the new world. Kimball Shinkoskey

Director Lee Leon tells the story of China’s crackdown on Falun Gong in his latest movie, “Unsilenced.”

Film spotlights Chinese suppression of religious movement By Bridgette M. Redman Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

people showed up at party offices and the self-immolations in Tiananmen Square in 2001. “That was an event that turned the public opinion against Falun Gong for a long time,” Lee said. “A lot of the time, the public was sympathetic and felt the government measures went too far — that there was no need to do something to these peaceful people.” Beyond that, Lee wanted to tell the story of these students and their journeys, which is what dictated the storyline. “Above all, my priority was really for the characterizations, to show the events that made sense for Wong and his friends to go through and how they responded to the massive crackdown,” Lee said. Many hurdles Lee said this is one of the most difficult films he’s made, and he’s never shied from challenging work. The subject matter threw many obstacles in their way because of the fear of reprisal from China and the animosity many hold toward Falun Gong. The film is set in China, but they could not film there. They opted for Taiwan. “Even in Taiwan, lots of people were afraid of participating in the film for fear it would have repercussions to their career, safety or friends and family,” Lee said. In Taipei, Taiwan, for six months, he was often woken up to loud noises — sounds of Taiwanese fighter jets scrambling to intercept the Chinese. “Before that, it was something I read in newspapers, but I had no idea what it felt like,” Lee said. “The Chinese aggression is so real. They can actually feel it every single day. No wonder people were afraid to do a production like this.” Lee said they only had one day off during the two-month schedule because every day they had had to look for new places for the next day’s shootings. Many canceled their contracts. Some of the Chinese-speaking cast backed out of the project even after signing the agreement. “In a way, we were experiencing the story we were trying to tell,” Lee said. “The more interference we encountered, at least to me, the more important it was to do the film. If we were doing an innocent rom-com, we would never encounter any difficulty. Perhaps we are adding something important. That’s what actually motivated us.”

hat price is the truth worth? How much is a person willing to pay to ensure it is heard? In “Unsilenced” — which screens at the Pasadena Laemmle and 29 other cities around the country from Jan. 21 to Jan. 28 — four Chinese students are faced with those questions as the Chinese Communist Party cracks down on Falun Gong, a religious movement founded in the country in the early 1990s. Amnesty International Group 22 in Pasadena is bringing the movie to the city, the second partnership between the organization and the movie’s director, Leon Lee. Following opening night, they will host a Q&A session and collect petitions for Chinese human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, who has been missing in China for years. It will be led by member Wen Chen and her daughter, Sylvia Wang, a Pasadena High School graduate and current Caltech student. “Unsilenced” was filmed during the pandemic, when there were no domestic cases of COVID-19 in Taiwan. So, they filmed safely. The story focuses on four university students who were Falun Gong practitioners and an American reporter for the Chicago Post, who must choose between reporting the story or risking expulsion from the country he loves. However, his losses pale compared to what the students face. In the beginning, they are shown as carefree young people who are in love, have great positions in a prestigious university and are respected in their communities. Not only do they slowly lose everything, but they face arrest, torture, death and loss of loved ones. “There was so much material to cover, and we have less than two hours,” Lee said. “We had to select the most important events. For me, it was very important to include the major events in the beginning — how the whole crackdown was initiated, how this popular movement was turned into something that was supported and praised by the regime to an enemy of the state almost overnight.” The film is described as a documentary thriller that focuses on well-documented and some dramatized events. Significant events include the Falun Gong appeal on April 25, 1999, when thousands of

Intense movie Because the movie deals with suppression and the crackdown, some scenes are difficult to watch. It has an R rating, in part because of its depiction of violence and torture. Still, it pales in comparison to reality. “We went through an (intense) thought process,” Lee said. “The reality is that the human rights violations experienced were far worse than what we depicted in the film. We had to dial back to make sure we demonstrate the points and get the message across without making people too uncomfortable.” He said they showed the film more than a dozen times to collect feedback. Their goal was to ensure people would understand what was going wrong without thinking it was too much. While the film is about real people, the actors did not have access to the folks they were portraying for many reasons — from protecting their anonymity to many people still being in China. Still, they did a lot of research and reading and took copious notes. “I think people can tell they did their homework,” Lee said. “For example, the actor who portrayed Secretary Yang, many people told me they were shocked and stunned by his performance and were scared by him. He shared with me the amount of research he did digging into the notorious 6 10 office.” While the film makes no mention of this secret organization, Lee said it is a Gestapo-type organization whose sole mandate is to get rid of Falun Gong by whatever means necessary. The actor, Tzu-Chiang Wang, an ex-special forces operative whose unit was tasked with the protection of the Taiwanese president and who served as head of security for celebrities and businesspeople, discovered it on his own and asked whether his character was based on someone from that office. “I said, yes, of course,” Lee said. “I was very impressed. You could tell he really understood the workings of the Chinese regime.” Other stars include Sam Trammel (“True Blood,” “Breakthrough,” “The Order”) and Anastasia Lin, Miss World Canada 2015. Pasadena activists promote film Chen said the focus of the local Amnesty International is human rights abuses in China and they have spent the past 20 years writing letters in support of prisoners of conscious, including Falun Gong practitioners and human rights lawyers. In 2008, they successfully campaigned for the release of Falun Gong practitioner Bu Dongwei. After his release, he and his family came to Pasadena to celebrate the people who wrote letters day after day. “He thanked us for the work we did for him, and it was really encouraging,” Chen said. Now they are campaigning for the release of Gao Zhisheng, a human rights lawyer. One of the reasons he disappeared, Chen said, is because he defended a case of Falun Gong. “In China, practitioners are not allowed to have lawyers and lawyers are not allowed to defend them,” Chen said. “(Gao) has been disappeared since 2017 and had already suffered nine years in prison. It’s really important for us to raise cases related to China before the Beijing Olympics.” When she learned “Unsilenced” was released, she immediately watched it and said she was impressed. She was especially moved by the involvement and suffering of the two women in the film because she has two daughters of a similar age — one at CalTech and the other at Pasadena High School. “I saw the sexual abuse of female practitioners in prison, and I really felt like that is something, as a woman, we should speak up and let others know this is what happens to people like us in China,” Chen said. Her two daughters will join her for the screening and the Q&A session. They will share what sort of actions audience members can take to help fight human rights abuses. Amnesty International will have a table manned by volunteers who can discuss open cases in China. “This is, to us, a very local event,” Chen said. The film will have two showings every day for seven days. Chen encourages people to buy their tickets ahead of time because the theater will be enforcing social distancing. Lee said what happens in this movie has a direct effect on the daily lives of Americans. He lists such things as the boycott of the Beijing Olympics and the rising tensions across Taiwan. It is important, he said, for people to better understand how the cover-up, censorship and propaganda machine works so they will be better equipped to deal with whatever comes out of China. “This is a story that will resonate with people right here in Pasadena,” Lee said. “My goal of creating this film is not only to shed a light on the human rights situation in China, but more importantly it is about the theme of truth vs. lies. If you think that truth is important in your life, that our society needs more truth, if you think people need the courage to stand up for what they believe is true — then you will find this story inspiring.”

Pasadena firefighter Tony Zee joined his department in 2004.

Firefighter Tony Zee leads the charge against occupational cancer irefighter Tony Zee joined the Pasadena Fire Department at a crucial point in his life. He had spent the last four years trying to get a job as a firefighter and was on the verge of giving up, until he received a letter. Zee’s dream of becoming a firefighter began when he was a student at Cal State LA when he learned about a program for fire administration and technology from friends he lived with in the dorms. “I was fortunate enough to meet the right people and took an interest in it,” Zee said. “This is my calling, and this is what I want to do.” Zee joined the Pasadena Fire Department in 2004, but within the first six months of his career he began experiencing pain in his back. He visited his doctor and returned to work on pain medication. After his symptoms continued to worsen, Zee saw an oncologist and was diagnosed with stage 4 bone cancer. He was 27 years old. “It changed my outlook in this career because, at the time, cancer wasn’t the No. 1 cause of death in the fire service, that was heart disease,” Zee explained. “After I got through everything and came back, I took it upon myself to educate others.” Cancer is now the leading cause of death in the fire service. According to reports, there are over 265 known carcinogens in the typical structure fire. Firefighters are regularly exposed to heat, smoke and toxic substances, such as arsenic, cadmium and asbestos, that put them at an elevated risk of developing cancer. Exposure to these carcinogens can happen during a fire response and even back at the station as contaminants collect on used gear. January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month. “We had a horrible way of doing business when dealing with cancer,” Zee said. “Before, we would wear what we call turnouts, the yellow gear we wear in fires, all the time. And we didn’t realize that we should be cleaning these things regularly, especially when we’re going into fire environments. A lot of times back in the day, the dirtier you looked, the more of a veteran you were. That showed your status, like, ‘Oh, wow, this guy’s helmet is burned up. We’re going to follow that person.’ That’s not the case anymore.” The human body’s absorption rate increases by nearly 400% for every five-degree increase in skin temperature, so chronic heat exposure puts firefighters at an even greater risk of absorbing the carcinogens of a smoke-filled environment. This is why firefighters have a 14% greater chance of dying from cancer than the general U.S. population. After his own battle with cancer, Zee decided to return to the Pasadena Fire Department, where he was met with overwhelming love and support. “If you jump into firefighting, this is a passion that you have and you’re not going to let anything stop you,” Zee said. “You don’t want to leave that family. You want to be there for the next person that it happens to because it’s going to happen to somebody else. One

out of 3 develop cancer sometime in their career.” Though the act of working in and around fire and smoke will always pose a risk, there are measures that are becoming widely adopted in fire departments across the country to minimize the threat of developing cancer. These measures include wearing a mask in any smoke environment, staging uphill or upwind after arriving at an incident, thoroughly washing gear after it’s used, bagging all tools and equipment contaminated by a fire for external cleaning, applying cleansing wipes to decontaminate the skin, installing filtered ventilation systems throughout the station, ensuring that the fuel used by the department is both safe and renewable, and regularly reporting all personal exposures, a key step to ensuring proof that exposure at work was the cause of cancer if it occurs. “Everything is about documentation now,” Zee said. “Cancer is now presumptive in the fire service, but presumptive doesn’t mean that after you develop it wherever you work say they’re going to cover it. We still have to prove that we got it from work, so we have a system that we use where you can input exposures into a computer and they’re stored for your whole career. And if you show that to the city or even to a lawyer, they can’t fight it.” The importance of exposure reporting is just one of the many lessons that Zee now teaches as a mentor. For the past 8 years, he’s traveled to different fire departments and academies sharing precautions that firefighters can take to reduce their exposure to carcinogens. “I just really hope that we can turn this upside down, just like with all the heart diseases that firefighters had to deal with,” Zee said. “That only happened because of the awareness. Heart diseases became less of an issue because people started eating better and exercising more, so it’s just a matter of time. We have so much support from our unions, our families and all the fire academies. Even our gear is changing to protect us better. It’s going to happen, I’m very confident in that.” Zee continues to educate and guide others to embrace new protocols for cancer prevention and to lead the charge in raising awareness for the risks posed to firefighters in Pasadena and beyond. s a past director of the Pasadena Jewish Temple’s Louis B. Silver Religious School and current member on the board of directors of Friends In Deed, Arcadia resident Debby Singer is dedicated to improving the community around her. For her commitment to helping those in need through her service to the homeless as well as Jewish education, the Social Justice Committee has honored Singer with the second Marv Gross Social Justice Award, created to honor former chairman Rabbi Marvin M. Gross, who died in 2019. “I’m humbled and overwhelmed by it,” Singer said. “Marv Gross was a mentor of mine, and I’m honored to get an award with his name on it.” Before Gross became the director of Union Station, he was a rabbi at a synagogue in Glendale. Afterward, he joined the synagogue in Pasadena and his kids attended the religious school where Singer worked at the time. “I got to know him as an individual, as a parent, and as a member of the congregation,” Singer recounted. “He was a wonderful soul and a great humanitarian.” Singer, who has lived in Arcadia for over 40 years, was presented the Marv Gross Social Justice Award on Jan. 14, as well as $500 that she will use to progress the mission of Friends In Deed, where she has been active coordinating monthly hot lunches for clients and assisting in the Food Pantry, the Women’s Room and the Bad Weather Shelter. “With all the programs that they run there, the people that run the program know every individual who comes to that place,” Singer said of her experience with the nonprofit. “When I visited the Women’s Room, which is a day respite for women who live on the street, everybody knew everybody. They were individuals with individual stories. People knew how they got into the situations they were in and were willing to help them, but they were treated with dignity. All the donations were valued, and you could see the donations working immediately for the individual.” Along with her work at Friends In Deed, Singer has also been the director of the Louis B. Silver Religious School at PJTC, where she has led by example working with students on projects that emphasized the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam, making the world a better place. Singer was inspired by two trips with the Ziv Tzedakah Foundation and fellow Jewish educators to Israel, where she worked with organizations across the country that were dedicated to helping others, and decided that she would integrate servitude into the heart of the Louis B. Silver Religious School’s curriculum. “After the first trip, we saw around 20 different organizations in 10 days. I came home and I thought, ‘We need to bring this information back to the kids and see what they want do with it,’” Singer explained. “It was important to me that our curriculum always included giving back to the community and giving back to people who are less fortunate than we are.” Singer invited Danny Siegel, creator of the Ziv Tzedakah Foundation, to speak with her students and let the class pick one of the organizations that the foundation worked with to study for the rest of the year. At the end of the year, the students then raised money for their chosen organization. This “Mitzvah Fair” became an annual occurrence, and the school has since supported both local and international organizations like Foothill Unity, Haven House and Ronald McDonald House to help make a positive change in the world. Today, Singer works for the Jewish Federation and directs a program called PJ Library that sends books to Jewish families around the world each month. The program currently publishes books from seven different languages in 20 different countries to over 1,100 families. “We do a lot of programming where we get families together, but now we’re doing it all on Zoom and we’re sending home kit,” Singer said. “What I’m looking forward to in 2022 is what we took for granted before all of this: the ability to gather with people that we care about.”

He will share information on ultra-faint dwarf galaxies and how they provide tests of dark matter particle properties. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A with viewers. Illusive ultra-faint dwarf galaxies are dominated by the darkest matter and are the least luminous and least chemically evolved galaxies. Astronomers and astrophysicists perceive them as the best candidate fossils from the universe’s early stages. Reticulum II, for example, is a tiny, ultra-faint galaxy discovered in 2015 on the outskirts of the Milky Way by astronomers who used the Dark Energy Survey’s panoramic survey telescope. Dark matter cannot be seen directly because its particles do not absorb, reflect or emit light. The only way we know dark matter exists at all is the effect it has on objects astronomers can observe directly. Nadler is a postdoctoral fellow at the Carnegie Observatories Theoretical Astrophysics Center in Pasadena. He researches near-field cosmology — the detailed study of the formation and evolution of nearby galaxies, including the Milky Way in which we live — as well as dark matter, the invisible material that makes up most of the universe. He is a member of the international Dark Energy Science Collaboration, which makes high-accuracy measurements of fundamental cosmological parameters using data from the Legacy Survey of Space and Time. He received his Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University. The cost of the monthly Cosmic Cocktail Hour is $7 for members of the Pasadena Senior Center and $10 for nonmembers 50 and older. To register, visit pasadenaseniorcenter.org and click on Lectures & Classes, then Cosmic Cocktail Hour or call 626-795-4331. Everyone who registers will receive an email link to access the Zoom event. In addition to online classes, onsite events and other activities, members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center are encouraged to visit the website regularly for a monthly magazine, COVID-19 updates specifically for older adults and more. The center, at 85 E. Holly St., is an independent, donor-supported nonprofit organization that has served older adults for more than 60 years. During the pandemic, doors are open Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for social services and other critical services for older adults in need as well as limited occupancy for events, the library, fitness center and computer lab. Masks and social distancing are required. Rooms are sanitized after each use.

Martinez shares history of ‘Latinos in Pasadena’ By Laura Latzko Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

I

n Roberta H. Martinez’s book, “Latinos in Pasadena,” the author shares lesser-known pieces of the city’s history. It explores how Mexican American and Latino people have helped to shape the community. Martinez will discuss her book and research during a virtual talk on Wednesday, January 26, with Tashiana Bryant-Myrick, the director for the Caltech Center for Inclusion and Diversity. Bryant-Myrick — who has a doctorate in educational leadership from California State University, Long Beach — has worked for more than a decade with campus organizations and committees that promote diversity and inclusion. The upcoming talk is part of Caltech’s CaltechLive! Behind the Book series. Martinez will also sign books on Saturday, Jan. 29, at Pasadena’s Mercadito Monarca Cultural Gift Shop.

Longtime activist Martinez is an activist, historian, playwright and author who resides in Pasadena and has been researching the city’s history since the mid-1990s. “I lived for 15 years in Pasadena not knowing there had been any Latino history,” she said. “I grew up in East LA, so I was surrounded by that history. When I was beginning to meet people who lived in town, who had been here during the ’20s and ’30s, I began to learn their stories, and I wanted to find out more. That’s part of the reason that we started the Latino Heritage Parade, to share those stories and to share those experiences. It’s a rich history, which I didn’t know, and I feel richer for knowing. I want to do the same with others, share with them some of this richness of that history.” Martinez has served as the executive director for Latino Heritage and as the chair for the city of Pasadena’s Arts and Library commissions. She has also been on the board of organizations such as the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena Senior Center and Pasadena Community Access Corporation. Martinez is a playwright as well. Writing for three years, she has been working on a piece about a family’s interactions with Pancho Villa. Martinez presented her short play “El Arroyo” at the Frida Kahlo Theater 10-Minute Play Festival in 2021 and plans to bring it back this year in Spanish. Spreading the word A reader for the Huntington Library, Martinez has discussed “Latinos in Pasadena” in front of groups in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Her book, which was done in a photo-journal format, took under a year to finish. In her research, the author drew from master’s theses, newspaper articles, oral histories and information from the Ethnic History Research Project. She includes photos from institutions such as the Huntington Library and the Autry Museum of the American West, as well as family photos from neighbors. “It ran the gamut from people bringing out stuff that had been under their beds in shoeboxes to having to fill out forms acknowledging how I would use (photos),” Martinez says. “Latinos in Pasadena” was released in 2009, but she continues to discuss it to educate others about Pasadena’s often-forgotten Mexican American and Latino history. “We are practiced at thinking of groups as very distinct and separate, and we don’t know the history of other groups,” Martinez said. “We often don’t know the stories of other communities, so how might we see the similarities if we don’t know their stories? Because we know so much of the Black and white experience, it’s valuable to learn that there are other communities that had similar experiences,” Martinez says. Martinez said it’s important to share Latinos’ long, storied past in Southern California. “Historically folks that would self-identify or would be identified by others as Latinas or Latinos are the second group that was here in the area. This was a part first of Nueva

España and then Mexico. After the Mexican American War, it became part of the United States,” Martinez says. There are few monuments to bring attention to Pasadena’s Latino and Mexican American history, she said. “As you are driving or walking around the city, there isn’t anything that lets you know that there is a long history here,” Martinez said. Martinez is still developing a focus for the Caltech talk. She said she may touch on Mexican American and Latino people who have interacted with Caltech. For example, through the 1960s, Caltech faculty lived in the historic home of Arturo and Helen Elliott Bandini. During past talks, Martinez has spoken about topics such as families connected to the Foothills history; homesteaders, squatters and pioneers in Altadena; the two segregated Mexican schools within Cover art of “Latinos in Pasadena.” Pasadena’s school district and Black pioneers in Pasadena. During these conversations, Martinez will often not discuss the history of Latino and Mexican American people but others who had similar experiences. “As a historian, it’s good to not only know the stories of the community from which you come but the communities with whom some of your ancestors or people who lived in your community had interactions with,” Martinez said. Martinez hopes, through her talks, to get others invested in sharing Pasadena’s Latino and Mexican American history. “One (reason) is hoping someday there will be enough allies that will have an interest in this that we share this history more broadly and also have curated exhibitions and more ways to tell this story,” Martinez said. “There are people whose families have lived here three, four, five generations who will come out and say, ‘My uncle went to that school.’ It reinforces their experiences. It’s always wonderful to see a story that is being shared that is reflective of your own experience.”

This season, Girl Scouts will continue selling cookies in creative, socially distant means.

LA County Girl Scouts kick off 2022 cookie season irl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles kick off the 2022 Girl Scout Cookie Season this month, taking orders starting Tuesday, Jan. 18. Girl Scouts will be back to selling cookies, taking action in the community, and practicing their entrepreneurial skills for this tradition through Sunday, March 13. Consumers are encouraged to support their local Girl Scout entrepreneurs by purchasing their favorite cookies — and trying the newest cookie to join the lineup: Adventurefuls, which joins the portfolio of eight other iconic Girl Scout Cookies including favorites like Thin Mints, Samoas and Tagalongs. Adventurefuls is an indulgent brownie-inspired cookie with caramel-flavored crème and a hint of sea salt. “Like everyone, our girls have persevered through some very tough challenges this year, and we are all so excited for another season of cookies,” said Theresa Edy Kiene, Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles chief executive officer. “In true Girl Scout fashion, they have adapted, stayed hopeful, and supported each other and now they launch their beloved annual cookie traditions. This season is particularly special because it comes as we kick off our council’s cen-

tennial celebration. It is a big year for us, and we couldn’t be happier to share all of that excitement with the whole Greater Los Angeles community.” This season, Girl Scouts will continue selling cookies in creative, socially distant and contact-free ways to keep themselves and their customers safe during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Many Girl Scouts will also run their familiar outdoor cookie booths in the community, all of which follow local, state and CDC guidelines. As part of a research-based curriculum, girls identify their passions, issues they care about and changes they want to make in their communities. They work with their troops to decide which adventures to pursue or projects to take on and use the proceeds from cookie sales to put their ideas into action. Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls are empowered to explore and get a taste of what it’s like to be an agent for change and an entrepreneur. They learn five curriculum-based online and offline business skills that are appropriate for each age level and set them up for success in life. To purchase cookies, visit girlscouts.org.

• ARTS & CULTURE • ‘Mapping Fiction’ celebrates 100th anniversary of ‘Ulysses’ By Bliss Bowen Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

Photos courtesy of The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens

T

he intersection of fictional worlds and reality, and how we often perceive physical places through stories we have heard or read about them, is the focus of “Mapping Fiction,” a small but thought-provoking new exhibit at the Huntington Library through May 2. “It was a fantastic show to put together during the pandemic; I put most of it together in my living room,” observed curator Karla Nielsen, the curator of literary collections at the Huntington, speaking at a press preview at the Huntington Library the day before the exhibit’s official Jan. 15 opening. “We were looking for ways to experience the world when we didn’t have access” to the places and gatherings where we normally live our lives. Highlights of “Mapping Fiction” include a typescript draft of the Penelope chapter from Irish novelist James Joyce’s controversial modernist masterpiece “Ulysses;” ink-and-pencil maps in spiral notebooks drawn by Pasadena native Octavia E. Butler while plotting her 1998 novel “Parable of the Talents” and the unpublished “Parable of the Trickster;” an 1890 Round the World With Nellie Bly game board inspired by the intrepid New York World reporter’s legendary race around the globe; and maps for Miguel de Cervantes’ “Don Quixote,” Christopher Isherwood and Edward Upward’s “The Mortmere Stories,” George R.R. Martin’s “Game of Thrones,” Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Kidnapped” and “Treasure Island,” and J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.” Lewis Carroll, William Faulkner, Helen Hunt Jackson, Jack and Charmian London, Jules Verne, Virginia Woolf and Karen Tei Yamashita are among the other writers featured in the exhibit, which comprises items from the 16th through the 20th centuries. The occasion for the show is the 100th anniversary of the publication of Joyce’s “Ulysses,” “considered by many people to be the most influential novel of the 20th century,” Nielsen said. Explaining that Joyce wrote the novel while living in Italy and used a 1904 guide to Dublin to reconstruct the Irish capital in the pages of his stream-of-consciousness narrative, Nielsen said she was intrigued to learn that he opposed any plans to publish the novel with a map. Over time, however, “there has been a real continuous desire to map the novel because it is so precisely plotted in time and space” — and therein lay a key question explored by the exhibit: Why would Joyce resist having his meticulously constructed book published with a map? Joyce’s attitude sounds counterintuitive to more visually oriented 21st-century fans of graphic novels, photographic storytelling, and virtual reality travel. As authors (and publishers) superimpose maps of their make-believe worlds on real-life locations, so do mapmakers utilize their real-world skills to enhance the verisimilitude of fiction. Avid readers respond by attempting to physically explore such imaginary universes; think of bus and walking tours that show where LA-area authors such as Butler, Raymond Chandler and John Fante wrote and staged their stories. “Literary tourism is often frustrating,” Nielsen acknowledged, but the human impulse that fosters it remains fascinating. In 1934, Joyce’s publisher, Random House, sought to work around his resistance with “How to Enjoy James Joyce’s Great Novel Ulysses,” a cheeky brochure that paired a small map with a plot summary and promotional testimony to the book’s appeal. Other “Mapping Fiction” items drawn from the Huntington’s literary archives and historical holdings illuminate “different forms of mapping space.” Loren Latker’s “Shamus Town” is a colorful 2014 “Raymond Chandler Mystery Map” of the reinvented Los Angeles landscape that is as central a character in Chandler’s novels as Philip Marlowe. (As Nielsen noted in her remarks, Chandler has become as mapped onto Los Angeles as Joyce has been mapped onto Dublin.) A Harlem Renaissance map is illustrated with historical literary figures stationed across a street-grid background. In contrast, authors such as Octavia Butler and William Faulkner — who repeatedly set his stories in Yoknapatawpha County, a Mississippi stronghold of his own creation — transformed their real-life environs into fictional settings on the page. Jonathan Swift’s brutal 1726 satire “Gulliver’s Travels” presented itself as a genuine eyewitness account of adventure, complete with maps detailing routes taken — which were based on real-world maps whose “Parts Unknown” corners gave Swift creative license to raise merry hell and prompt modern readers to debate post-colonial literature. Publishing maps with novels was not unusual during Joyce’s time, and would seem a natural option for a book deliberately patterned after Homer’s “Odyssey.” But “Joyce didn’t want

Loren Latker, “Shamus Town” The Raymond Chandler Mystery Map of Los Angeles, the Wonder City of America, 2014. Map, 39 3/4 inches by 26 1/2 inches.. his book to be explained,” Nielsen said. “He wanted it to be encountered. He wanted readers to immerse themselves in it.” In tandem with the exhibit, the Huntington will host “Joycean Cartographies: Navigating a New Century of Ulysses,” an academic conference Wednesday, Feb. 2, to Friday, Feb. 4, that will include readings from “Ulysses” at the time of day in which the scenes occur. Visiting speakers will include UC Berkeley Professor Catherine Flynn, Stanford Professor Ato Quayson and “Tropic of Orange” author Karen Tei Yamashita. Additionally, literary travel writer Katie Orphan will discuss “Literary Tourism in Los Angeles” in Rothenberg Hall on Tuesday, March 8, while tour maps will be available in the exhibition gallery for visitors interested in taking self-guided literary tours of “Octavia E. Butler’s Pasadena.”

Normand Boyle drinks his magic mushroom potion during a scene in “Mondo Hollywoodland.”

Psychedelic movie tips hat to ’60s cult film I

f an alien were to visit and ask, “What is Hollywood?” would the answer be “mondo”? That’s the answer Janek Ambros has in his new film, “Mondo Hollywoodland,” a tribute to the 1967 documentary by Robert Carl Cohen, “Mondo Hollywood.” Ambros shot the 105-minute psychedelic film entirely on his smartphone. It had its U.S. premiere at the DTLA Film Festival, where it won the Creative Vision Award. Internationally, it made its debut at the Innuendo International Film Festival in Milan, where Ambros won best director. Following a limited theatrical release, “Mondo Hollywoodland” is available on Amazon Prime. Ambros got the idea for it when one of his favorite directors, Paul Thomas Anderson, presented the original “Mondo Hollywood,” at a film festival. He said he was then in his mid-20s and trying to get his first feature film financed. “I thought, what if I did a newer version of that?” Ambros said. His original idea was to shoot the movie in virtual reality with a VR camera. “Then, all of a sudden, I started working on it more in 2017 and 2018 and I started to be like, what if I did it like a regular movie?” He wrote with Marcus Hart and Chris Blim, the latter of whom starred in it as Normand Boyle, the magic mushroom dealer at the center of the story. The other two writers also appear, with Ambros as the antagonist.

The film follows Boyle as he searches for his cat, Zappo. He tries to rid his attic of rats and provides drugs to three groups of Hollywood types — the titans, the weirdos and the dreamers. Interspersed are shots of iconic Los Angeles locations in DTLA and Venice. The shooting was intentionally low budget with attention poured into the editing stage to add the psychedelic effects. Most of the time, he said there were the actors and only two crew. He’d have the audio equipment in his backpack, and he and Blim would shoot. “That gave us a lot of abilities to shoot in place and situations we would never be able to budget for if we did it traditionally,” Ambros said. When Ambros and Hart first start writing it for virtual reality, they came up with the idea of the three Hollywood types. “Those were the three cohorts of Hollywood we wanted to discover,” Ambros said. “Marcus wrote the narration, and the script became more narrative. When we started to shoot, we had a general framework.” Wild detours ruled the filmmaking process, though. One night, they were celebrating Blim’s birthday at a bar and a car exploded on the street. Because the shooting was all done on the iPhone, he ran out, filmed footage and incorporated the explosion into the story. “I ran up to the car and started shooting,” Ambros said. “It was a freak accident

Two women hang out poolside at the home of Normand Boyle throughout the film “Mondo Hollywoodland.” — no one was hurt. That’s an example. Then we had footage of a car explosion, so we went over and changed the script. It’s a very strange way to make a movie.” In the edit room, Ambros chipped away at the task to “get to the destination from all the footage that we had.” He said each section has a three-act structure amid the multilayered craziness. “We were writing the script as we were shooting,” Ambros said. “We wanted to stay true to the psychedelic nature of the era. It wasn’t traditional or formulaic.” They wrote, shot and edited it before the pandemic, but screenings were delayed due to COVID-19. “Watching it during the pandemic, I remember looking at what this world is — everybody is hanging out — and wondering, ‘Is it ever going to be like this again?’” Ambros said he comes from an editing background and is influenced by old Russian editors known for creative styles and montages. He went frame by frame, correcting colors and adding trippy sequences in the editing room, using tricky editing techniques rather than paying for special effects. Ambros’ first feature film was “Imminent Threat,” a documentary on the war on terror. The executive producer was James Cromwell, an actor best known for “Babe,” “Star Trek: First Contact” and “The Green Mile.” “I reached out to him because he’s very politically involved — animal rights, human rights and political issues,” Ambros said. “When I made this film (‘Mondo Hollywoodland’), I didn’t tell him about it, but I sent it to him and said, ‘Do you like it? Would you like to produce it?’ I was surprised that he said yes. And he was so into it.” Cromwell lent his name to the film and championed it, which thrilled Ambros. “For this type of film, there are always a lot of insecurities — what are people going to think?” Ambros said. “Having him behind us is very encouraging. It can go a long way.” Ambros has been shocked at the positive feedback and reviews. “I hope that people embrace the strangeness of it and go along for the ride,” Ambros said. “It’s not for everyone. But for those who get it, they’ll have fun and watch it a few times. There are weird, little strange layers to it that have some rewatch value.” He also hopes that people pick up on the film’s subversive political aspect. “It has an antifascist point of view,” Ambros said. “There is a villain in the movie who represents a malignant force within the United States. “Underneath the absurdity and chaos and silliness there are some things politically that it is trying to say. I hope people find that interesting and amusing in the wake of so much political discourse.” Movie theaters are overrun with thrillers, dramas and comedies, but unlike the ’60s, ’70s and even the ’90s, there aren’t as many bizarre, experimental films. “It doesn’t take itself too seriously and has fun,” Ambros said. “I’m going against film language and tradition. I think that is why some people resonate with this. Even if you hate the movie, I think people will say it is unique, it’s so weird. I think usually the weirdness is what attracts people.”

Abstract artist captures beauty of local landscapes By Bridgette M. Redman Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

J

ulika Lackner has been mesmerized by the Los Angeles night sky since the pandemic began. The lockdown changed the longtime landscape artist’s focus and led her to create “Evening Mile: The Paintings of Julika Lackner” on display Glendale’s Forest Lawn Museum from Saturday, Jan. 29, to Sunday, May 1. An in-person show, “Evening Mile” features large-scale paintings that have a profound effect on patrons. “This is the first time the series is going to be shown in real life,” said the Berlin-born artist who now lives in Eagle Rock. “What I realize is that the paintings can look quite repetitive — they’re all landscapes, all at twilight, all with lines in the sky. What it has become about for me is the differences within each painting and within each sunset. So, it is really exciting to show them in a room next to each other for people to experience that way. To show them in real life versus photos of them, these are even better in person. That’s usually the case with paintings.” The series features views from her backyard in Eagle Rock and Southern California at large. Even now, she said the series is not complete. She plans to expand her radius of sites, though she is still not traveling far.

Moving across the pond After Lackner moved to Los Angeles from Berlin, she earned an MFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. In Berlin, she was creating representational paintings of subway stations. That changed when she arrived in Pasadena. “I changed into painting Los Angeles at night, but it was still pretty representational,” she said. “It was all about paint and the orbs of flight in the fog and that big dome of LA sky that is always lit.” She then painted in a more abstract manner, delving into atmosphere and space. She started a series of linear landscapes that featured California, Yellowstone, Death Valley and Yosemite — what she called all the heavy hitters of dramatic landscapes. Then 2020 came and the lockdowns grounded her. “For the very first time, I thought I should paint my view,” Lackner said. “We have a wraparound deck and I’d never thought seriously to paint (my view).” She watched the sunset every night, taking pictures that she could refer to while painting. She merged her style from grad school with her linear landscapes by bringing in colored lines that represented the light that is in the city reflected into the sky. The Forest Lawn show contains some of her older paintings, which provide context for this nocturnal series. There is one representational landscape, one complete abstraction with just lines and then another that is a landscape where the lines across the sky first started to come in.

Site-specific works For the Forest Lawn exhibition, she created three site-specific works. She went to the museum when it was closed and took pictures of the views from the west, the north and the south. The southern view looks toward Downtown LA, the north one looks at Glendale and the west one looks into the San Fernando Valley. “It’s really neat to have a show where people can walk outside and see that view,” Lackner said. “They can kind of see how I represent that view in my paintings. That was a really exciting part of the show for me.” Set in a cemetery, the museum has free parking and public admission. The 17-piece exhibition has evolved since it debuted in 2021. Lackner said the paintings are larger, especially the one of Downtown LA, which is the show’s centerpiece. “My views in the beginning were very limited,” Lackner said. “So much about the pandemic in the beginning brought it very close and intimate. As the world started opening up, thankfully, I was able to go a bit farther — all still Southern California, but there are ones from Santa Barbara Bay and elsewhere.”

Twilight 71 (Santa Barbara Bay), 2021. Oil and acrylic on canvas, 60 x 48 inches

From the beginning She began the series of twilight paintings in April 2020. When the pandemic started, she was working on her linear landscapes and commissions. Then she saw a photo she took on her phone of the night sky from her deck and was inspired to paint that. “I was trying to capture the twinkling lights in the hills,” Lackner said. “It had this very warm feeling. I wanted the twinkling lights, but I didn’t want the dark, dark night sky. That time right after the sun went down has this really nice way of bringing the city lights up into the sky. It’s just a gorgeous time of day.” Previously, she avoided sunset and sunrise. The change received a warm reception. “That makes a difference,” she said. “I had an immediate positive response and that was very encouraging.” She is excited to exhibit at the Forest Lawn, an institution that exhibits permanent and touring collections. She was offered space in the front room, which, ironically, has a great view. The series has been her most popular, in part because she feels Los Angeles doesn’t always get the love that it deserves with art and aesthetics. “It is really a beautiful place,” Lackner said. “The people who live here love it and are happy to see it be treated with such respect, but also really bringing out the beauty of the place, especially this northeast area with the hills and everything.” She is also happy to give back to Eagle Rock, Glendale and Pasadena because they mean a lot to her. “The past two years have been really, really difficult for most people in various ways,” Lackner said. “I feel the best part of the pandemic is it’s brought people closer and made them more understanding and gentler, one would hope so anyway. This work, which tends to be on the uplifting side, is me wanting to give back to the community as well as me appreciating my community.”

Kim Schoenstadt: “Enter Slowly, The Legacy of an Idea” To Feb. 27 Featuring sculptures, paintings, drawings, and ephemera, the exhibition features new works inspired by Schoenstadt’s research of E-1027, an iconic house by 20th century architect, designer and artist Eileen Gray.
