ELECTION PICKS

My picks on the Pasadena City Council Candidate Forum held on Jan. 21. Please understand that my opinion is by no means the hear all and end all of any discussion, and do bear in mind that homelessness and affordable housing are at the very top of my priority list. That said: District 6 — Ryan Bell, who is both a pastor and a tenant District 4 — Charlotte Bland. Currently Gene Masuda is the councilman for District 4. Masuda is both a realtor and the owner of an apartment building. Need I go on... District 2 — Felicia Williams I am still undecided on the mayoral candidate. I like both Major Williams and Jason Hardin, who actually have real life experience and I truly believe would work on behalf of the people of Pasadena. Jason Hardin, however, made a point about raising the “in lieu” fee for developers who do not want to include affordable units in their complexes, which is something that I have been saying for quite some time — that the “in lieu” fee needs to be high enough to make them choose to include affordable units rather than just throw more money at the city to make “doing the right thing” go away. Although, some have told me that current Mayor Tornek’s heart is in the right place, and I do support his decision to align Pasadena better with Glendale and Burbank over the San Gabriel cluster of cities. And as a woman, I cringe every time someone has the audacity to say “there are not many women on the city council.” Please … Is THAT the best you have to run on? ~ PATRICIA CUNLIFFE VIA FACEBOOK

STOP THE SLAUGHTER

On Jan. 27, the world observed International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The date marks 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Hitler’s largest death camp. A key question facing historians is how could an enlightened society that produced our civilization’s greatest philosophers, poets and composers also produce its most notorious mass murderers? How could it get millions of ordinary citizens to go along? Was the Holocaust a peculiarly German phenomenon, or are other enlightened societies capable? Why are we Americans will-

ing to subsidize unspeakable atrocities in our own factory farms and slaughterhouses? Jewish Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer concluded: “To the animals, all people are Nazis.” His message was that we are all capable of oppressing the more vulnerable sentient beings in our midst, frequently without giving it a second thought. Indeed, our own enlightened society has translated the arbitrary Nazi dictum “the Christian lives, the Jew dies” into an equally arbitrary “the dog lives, the pig dies.” Only the victims’ names have been changed. The blissful ignorance of death camps and slaughterhouses in our midst remains. On the long road to end all oppression our very first step must be to drop animals from our menus. ~ VINNIE CASTANZA VIA EMAIL

WIND POWER

Trump’s disdain for wind energy started with his supposed Scottish golf course property value issue; then, it caused cancer and killed birds (“We put a little statue for the poor birds.”). Those concerns were subsequently debunked or mitigated. He failed to mention the real harm and costs of coal, oil and gas. Renewable Energy World magazine reported, conventional energy receives $300 billion in subsidies per year, while renewable energy has received less than $20 billion

of taxpayers’ money in the last 30 years. A study published by researchers at Harvard in 2011 found that the full life cycle cost of coal power is between about 9.5 and 27 cents per kilowatt-hour, most of which is paid by taxpayers in the form of increased health-related costs. These “indirect” subsidies amount to between $175 billion and over $500 billion per year. We’re to where “We put up a big statue for the poor humans.” ~ BOB NAST VIA EMAIL

NO MORE LIES

Why is the media wasting their time and ours listening to anything Donald Trump has to say? Doesn’t everybody, including those who support him, know by now that Trump lies every time he opens his mouth? And doesn’t this mean that those who report and spread his lies, knowing they are lies, are complicit in them? Isn’t it time to stop this moral atrocity once and for all and for the media to walk out of his press conferences en masse? That should tell Trump that the media and the people won’t stand for this abomination any longer. It’s time for the media to refuse categorically to spread Trump’s poison. NO MORE! ~ CLIVE LEEMAN VIA EMAIL

•GUEST OPINION• BY RANDY JURADO ERTLL

ADAM SCHIFF FOR PRESIDENT? AFTER THE TRUMP IMPEACHMENT TRIAL, THE IDEA DOESN’T SEEM FAR-FETCHED I met Congressman Adam Schiff in 1996 when I was the new voter organizer for the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV). I enthusiastically worked on Schiff’s state Senate campaign. I was impressed by his professional and academic background, serious personality and focused intensity. “Before serving in the Legislature, Schiff served with the US Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles for six years, most notably prosecuting the first FBI agent ever to be indicted for espionage,” Schiff’s congressional web page reads, in part. “Adam is a graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School.” I was a young CLCV organizer filled with dreams and idealism when I worked on Schiff’s Senate campaign. I was obsessed with implementing all of the concepts of fairness, inclusion and environmental action that I had learned as an undergraduate at Occidental College, and this was part of that mission. Like many of my classmates, I also wanted to change the world for the better. My commitment to elect candidates to help protect our environment was uppermost on my agenda, having grown up in some of the most polluted neighborhoods of Los Angeles. I organized bilingual phone banks along with the help of CLCV’s grizzled organizers and amazing volunteers who were fed Domino’s Pizza and sodas to stay motivated. We also helped create pro–environment direct mailings, walked precincts to speak with voters, and organized successful community forums to get more Latinos out to vote on election day. Through our efforts, we achieved an 80 percent turnout of new Latino voters. What was truly impressive was seeing Schiff walking most of the Senate district to speak with voters directly. He was committed to hearing what voters were thinking about. He loved speaking to people back then, a quality that he has maintained as a member of Congress, and he has consistently delivered for his district. Back in ‘96, through our efforts we won numerous state districts that were previously held by Republicans. The West San Gabriel Valley, including Pasadena, and neighboring cities Burbank and Glendale, were bastions of Republican voters, but they had now become Democrat territory. My youth and enthusiasm was tremendous. I was so proud of the four years that I dedicated to the CLCV. It was my first full-time job after graduating. In 2000, my last year with CLCV, Schiff ran for Congress, beating incumbent Republican James Rogan. Not long after that, I also ended up living and working in Washington, DC, and I would sometimes run into Schiff on Capitol Hill and in the hallways of the Capitol Building, while I served as communications director for former Congresswoman Hilda Solis, who is now a member of the LA County Board of Supervisors. Fast forward two decades and Congressman Schiff is leading the team of House Managers in the impeachment trial of President Trump. That came as no surprise. Schiff has the credentials and the experience to be considered for US Attorney General, perhaps even a potential presidential candidate. And now, through the rough and tumble world of politics, he has proven to be an effective leader at the national level. The nation has now had an opportunity to see Congressman Adam Schiff in action, through the televised impeachment hearings. Many Republican Senators may want to pretend that they ignored Schiff’s impassioned pleas when it comes to judging Trump. But in reality, they took Schiff very seriously. Even Senate Republican Lindsey Graham (from South Carolina) told Schiff “good job” regarding his logical, evidence-based argument in the impeachment trial. In his presentations, Schiff’s confidence and speaking style created an aura of trust, something Trump fanatics and defenders will dismiss and hate on. I say let them hate. We clearly have a new national leader who has the potential to become our next US Attorney General, even a future presidential candidate. Today, the idea of Adam Schiff for President doesn’t seem so far-fetched. n Randy Jurado Ertll is the author of the novel “The Lives and Times of El Cipitio.” Visit his website: RANDYJURADOERTLL.COM. 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.30.20

PLAYERS AND FANS REACT TO THE DEATH OF KOBE BRYANT, HIS DAUGHTER AND SEVEN OTHERS IN HELICOPTER CRASH BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ AND KEVIN UHRICH

T

he world is still coming to terms with the death of Los Angeles Lakers great Kobe Bryant, one of the planet’s most recognizable professional athletes. Bryant, 41, along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant, and seven other passengers died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas Sunday morning. Two of Gianna’s teammates, Payton Chester and Alyssa Altobelli, and their team’s assistant coach Christina Mauser also died in the crash. Chester’s mother, Sarah, and Altobelli’s parents, John and Keri, were also killed, officials confirmed Monday, as was pilot Ara Zobayan. “It’s surrealistic. I’m still trying to grasp it all. It’s in the news around the world,” said Johnny Buss, part owner and vice president of strategic development for the Lakers. Buss recently purchased the Ice House Comedy Club in Pasadena. “To see the world coming together, the laying of flowers at a service in China, it’s just amazing,” said a sorrowful Buss. “But things happen. We wish they didn’t, but they do.” Laker great Kareem Abdul Jabar, in an interview with Chris Cuomo on CNN Monday night, said “It’s been a very tough several hours now. It’s very hard to deal with this, when you see someone who had so much more to share with us.... you can’t make sense of it. Things like this don’t make sense. “It’s tough to understand,” Jabar went on. “It’s useless. It serves no purpose except to make us know we have to be even more careful. At this point, we don’t understand what the circumstances were about this flight. There could have been some problems with that. It’s not a time to point fingers. It’s just time for us to be more cautious and not let something like this happen again. The loss is just too much. I’m just glad you didn’t see me yesterday (Sunday). I was a mess yesterday.” LIFE IN THE SPOTLIGHT For 20 years Bryant mesmerized Los Angeles with his talents on the hardwood of first the Forum in Inglewood, and later Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. A ferocious competitor, Bryant’s accomplishments led him to be known as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. His father, Joe “Jelly Bean” Bryant, played in the NBA for eight seasons, four with the Philadelphia 76ers, three with the then-San Diego Clippers and one with the Houston Rockets. After his NBA career ended, Bryant’s father moved the family to Italy for the rest of his playing career. They later returned to the Philadelphia area as Bryant entered high school. The elder Bryant went on to coach the Sparks, LA’s WNBA team, from 2005 to 2007, and again at the end of the 2011 season. Buss, the eldest child of former Laker owner Jerry Buss, served as president of the Sparks until 2006. Kobe Bryant took the nation by storm in 1996, catching the eye of NBA scouts — many of whom thought he would be the heir apparent to the legendary Michael Jordan. Bryant told them he was better than Jordan. Bryant was drafted out of Lower Merion — a high school in the Philadelphia area — 13th overall by the Charlotte Hornets. Shortly after being picked, he was traded to the only NBA team he would ever play for — the Los Angeles Lakers. In his two decades with the team, Bryant won five championships, became an 18-time all-star and won two Olympic gold medals. Known for his innate scoring ability, Bryant ranks fourth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. In a game against the Toronto Raptors on Jan. 22, 2006, CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

MOVIN’ ON LA METRO UNVEILS NEXT GEN BUS PLAN BY SEAN P. THOMAS

T

he first look at the results of the LA County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s nearly two-year study on how to get more people out of their cars and onto the bus was recently released, the first step in a potential major overhaul of Metro’s network of buses. County transportation officials revealed the plan, dubbed the Next Gen Bus Plan, which calls for more frequent bus service to make buses slightly more competitive with personal vehicles. The proposal calls for buses to arrive at least every 10 minutes, with some running every five minutes on Metro’s nearly 30 major routes. According to the agency, that would mean that 83 percent of its current riders will be able to jump on a bus within 10 minutes of reaching a stop compared to the almost 50 percent that currently enjoy that frequency. Currently, only 16 of Metro’s major routes run under 10 minutes. According to Stephen Tu, Metro’s director of service planning, that would potentially mean less stops along the lines with increased frequency, meaning a slightly longer walk, but shorter travel times. In addition, the number of bus lines that run every five to 10 minutes on the weekdays would jump from 16 to 29 percent and the number of riders who could theoretically walk to a bus stop that runs every five minutes would more than double, from 900,000 to almost 2.2 million. The proposed changes come as Metro is dealing with consistently falling ridership numbers as Southern Californians increasingly turn to personal vehicles for their commutes. Since 2010, trips on Metro buses have decreased by nearly 25 percent. That dip in ridership has been impacting Metro’s bottom line tremendously. According to officials, Metro spends an extra $10 million a year to provide the same level of service. According to officials, the change is expected to reclaim 15 to 20 percent of it’s ridership. In a tweet, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti said that “the Next Gen Bus Plan re-imagines our bus system to meet the demands of Angelenos in the 21st century, with more frequent and reliable service to help riders get where they need to go faster and meet our climate goals.” But how much will this all cost? Part of the Next Gen Bus Study proposal was a new, five-year, $1 billion capital plan, which includes $750 million to explore new bus-only lanes and $150 million to improve infrastructure, such as bus shelters and benches. An additional $100 million will go toward improving bus boarding technology. Metro embarked on the Next Gen Bus Study in January 2018. Additional details from the plan call for more all-doors boarding, and to improve the wait environment. During the research phases of the study, Metro learned that unsecured bus stops are a barrier to increasing ridership, especially among women. Metro plans to hold a series of public meetings from February to April, and the agency will begin publishing material, including changes to individual route sheets, starting Saturday, Feb. 1. The results of the Next Gen Bus Study represent the first major changes to Metro’s network of buses in 25 years. The roll out of the new system would occur in three phases that match up with Metro’s yearly service updates. The first change is expected to be completed in December, then continue in June 2021, with the last phase expected to be completed by December 2021. n (A version of this story first appeared in our sister paper, the Downtown News.) 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.30.20

Bryant totaled 81 points — the second-most in a single game, only behind former Laker Wilt Chamberlain, who scored 100 points in one game while playing for the Philadelphia Warriors, which later became the Golden State Warriors. Chamberlain stayed in Philly, playing for the 76ers before moving to LA in 1968 and suiting up with the Lakers. In the summer of 2003, Bryant came under fire after being accused of sexual assault against a 19-year-old hotel employee in Colorado while rehabbing a knee injury. He was charged with felony sexual assault, but the charges were dropped close to a year later when the accuser refused to testify. The two parties later settled out of court. After that incident, Kobe maintained his relationship with his wife, Vanessa. At the time, the couple had one daughter. They would go on to have three more girls. In the ensuing years, Bryant became a strong advocate for women’s sports. At the time of the crash, he was on his way to his daughter’s basketball game in Thousand Oaks. He was her team’s coach. During his career, Bryant left an impact on future generations of basketball players. In the games that were on the same day as his death, teams across the NBA paid homage to him. The teams began with an eight-second backcourt violation and a 24-second shot clock violation, the two numbers Bryant wore in his career. Players such as Atlanta Hawk’s young star guard Trae Young remembered Bryant by wearing a No. 8 jersey instead of his usual No.11. Others such as San Antonio Spurs guard and LA native DeMar DeRozan offered his thoughts on the tragedy. “Words can’t explain it,” said DeRozan after the game against the Toronto Raptors. “Everything I learned came from Kobe. Take Kobe away I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t have the love, the passion, the drive — everything came from him.” After his retirement, Bryant set his eyes on different adventures, from movies to television. He won an Academy Award for his short film “Dear Basketball” and hosted a basketball analysis TV show titled “Detail.” “Kobe was a legend on the court and just getting started in what would have been just as meaningful a second act,” former President Barack Obama said in a tweet. ‘IT WAS ROUGH’ As people learned of the tragic helicopter crash, thousands flocked to L.A. Live and Staples Center. Fans of Bryant put together memorials with flowers, jerseys and candles outside the stadium. Other memorials sprouted up across LA and Orange County. Armen Shrikian grew up in the Newport Beach area where he met Bryant on several occasions. The superstar and his family lived in that area of Orange County. Shrikian, now living in Pasadena, remembers the impact that Bryant had on his life. “He is why I fell in love with basketball,” said the 23-year-old Shrikian. “My pursuit to become a sports journalist has always been because of my love of basketball and that really started because of Kobe.” Shrikian also talked about the “Mamba Mentality” that Bryant advocated and what he learned from that philosophy. “You finish what you start,” Shrikian said. “It’s this understanding of giving it all you ever had.” Milad Rohani 22, also grew up in the Newport Beach area where he met Bryant many times. Rohani, who now lives across the street from L.A. Live, went to the vigil there shortly after the news of Bryant’s death was reported. Until he saw the thousands of people, the sorrow on their faces and the screens that read “In Loving Memory of Kobe Bryant,” Rohani did not believe the news. “That’s when I broke down,” said Rohani. “It was just rough man. It was rough... It was genuinely surreal. I’ve never felt an energy like that... It’s like everyone in LA lost an uncle or a brother or a son.” Rohani was born in 1996, the same year Bryant was drafted. “Kobe came into the NBA the same year I was born,” he said. “He was this consistent part of my life. No matter what was going on with family, school, friends, girls or whatever it was, I could come back at 7 o’clock and watch Kobe Bryant dominate defenses.” Buss said he knew of no planned memorials for Bryant, but said there have been “ongoing discussions between the NBA, the Buss family and the Bryant family” about a possible commemoration. Buss’ sister, Laker president and controlling owner Jeanie Buss, has been with Vanessa and her daughters at the Bryant home in Orange County, offering solace and any help she can, Johnny Buss said. “It’s especially tough because we just lost our mom just before Christmas. So it’s just been one hell of a couple of months,” he said. “But we move on. We have to move forward and memorialize everybody who touched our lives, and Kobe is one of them.” n

Community and Refuge HUNTINGTON PRESIDENT KAREN R. LAWRENCE AND LIBRARIAN OF CONGRESS CARLA HAYDEN DISCUSS THE ENDURING VALUE AND CHANGING ROLE OF LIBRARIES IN 'WHY IT MATTERS' AT THE HUNTINGTON NEXT THURSDAY

ince September, the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino has been commemorating its first century of existence with special exhibits, performances, lectures and other events across its 120-acre campus. As part of that ongoing centennial celebration, next Thursday, Feb. 6, will see the debut of “Why It Matters” under the President’s Series banner, with Huntington President Karen R. Lawrence and Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden taking up the question of archives and libraries — why they exist, what they do, and why that work is important. It’s not a trivial topic or mere prompt for self-congratulation in the 21st century, when virtually anything seems available online. Yet according to the Huntington, which has digitized considerable material, over 1,700 researchers from around the world do work at its library each year. More than 11 million items from the past millennium comprise its archives, which include a Gutenberg Bible, the Ellesmere Chaucer, and the papers of Pasadena-raised science fiction writer Octavia Butler. (According to Lawrence, Butler’s is “the most consulted collection” in the library’s reading room.) The Huntington’s art and botanical collections are open to the public, but only a fraction of the library’s holdings are on public display. CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

COMMUNITY AND REFUGE Unlike community libraries, the Huntington is a research library to which researchers, or “readers,” apply — mostly academic scholars, historians and authors. Hilary Mantel, for example, conducted crucial research for her historical novel “Wolf Hall”; she dedicated the book to Huntington curator emerita of British historical manuscripts Mary Robertson. Local journalist Miriam Pawel consulted valuable primary resources at the library while writing her acclaimed book “The Browns of California: The Family Dynasty That Transformed a State and Shaped a Nation.” “Our mission is both scholarly and educational,” Lawrence acknowledges. “One of the things that ‘Why It Matters’ will also consider as it goes forward is how artists and writers make use of the collection to produce new work.” “It’s very important,” she adds, “to have Q&A from the audience,” to broaden the exchange of ideas. She is also looking forward to discussing access, why records matter, and how libraries have changed with Hayden, who is the first woman and the first African American appointed to be Librarian of Congress, and who brought extensive public library experience to the post. “Some of the roles that libraries play now in the country are different from what they used to be,” Lawrence notes. “They’re not all about books anymore; they’re about community. And refuge.” Libraries have not been a peripheral concern for Lawrence, who has been president of the Huntington since September 2018. The author of two books about Irish author James Joyce’s work, she holds degrees from Yale, Tufts and Columbia, and previously served as president of Sarah Lawrence College in New York for 10 years. Prior to that she was dean of UC Irvine’s School of Humanities. At the next “Why It Matters” discussion, on Feb. 27, she'll discuss history with former Harvard University President Drew Gilpin Faust, a Civil War historian. Per Lawrence, they will also talk about “why the study of the humanities and liberal arts and science and education” is relevant. “The humanities as a lens on science and tech is crucial,” she says, referencing the Caltech-Huntington Advanced Research Institute in the History of Science and Technology announced last March. “History shows that it’s not just computers that create new ways of thinking, anxieties about technology, and keeping up in information. ... Putting things in historical context, or in other narrative context, in science as well as in politics and policy, is a very useful way of understanding where we are today.” The Huntington Library’s public-facing displays share pieces that, among other things, tell this region’s history from diverse community perspectives. In this polarized time, when a certain sector of the populace regards the humanities as elitist, what role can institutions like the Huntington play in preserving the public commons and bringing people together? “Both in terms of preserving excellence and understanding that interesting discussions are valuable to the public, we can be a convener of important conversations where discourse is civil, unlike in many arenas," Lawrence replies. "And where people get to really hear complicated ideas, but in language that is not jargon-laden or totally academic. To hear people who’ve studied these things, who don’t have all the answers but who want to engage in dialogue and are incredibly informative at the same time. We can make our tremendous resources available, relevant, and impactful on many different communities, to have everybody benefit from it. “Henry Huntington was a visionary about how important the Pacific Rim, particularly Los Angeles and Southern California, would be as a cultural and business capital. I think that’s what the Huntington is about — the importance of cultures, not just one elitist culture, but bringing people together.” n “Why It Matters” with Huntington President Karen Lawrence and Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden in Rothenberg Hall at the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, 7:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6; free but reservations required. Now just a few weeks ago, cruising south down Los Robles Avenue, I passed Walnut Street and noticed a large, slightly aged wooden sign propped against the side of a building to my left, proclaiming “CAFETERIA OPEN TO PUBLIC.” An arrow pointed toward a parking lot on the campus of Fuller Theological Seminary. (Where was I headed again… the post office?) I hit the brakes, swerving into a sharp U-turn for an open parking space across the street. Now the hunt was on. Through the parking lot and a left turn, I found myself on campus in a quiet courtyard and at the door of the seminary’s dining hall. I’ve lived and lunched in Pasadena for the last 10 years. I even spent a few years managing a nonprofit that rented an office at First Congregational Church, which sits on the corner of Los Robles and Walnut, at the corner of the seminary’s stately, compact campus. It had never occurred to me that there was a campus dining facility, let alone that it was open to the public. (OK, I have a weakness for cafeterias, or at least the concept. your whim sparks for me my first joyful memories of early childhood gluttony. The exercise of volition, choice, and taste unimpeded by agents, intermediaries, or adults. Delicious.) However, my zealous curiosity has delivered me to a proper refectory at an actual seminary. Located on the first floor of Payton Hall, the dining room seems furnished with chairs and tables stolen form the library next door and the atmosphere is not so much hushed as calmly sedate. To the left, a small line forms at the counter where your dish is made to order by two genial chefs. Open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, the refectory feeds not only seminarians from Fuller but also undergraduates from Providence Christian College, which recently moved its campus to the First Congregational Church building, next door. Unaware of this fact when I get in line, in time for breakfast. I seem to be standing behind a group of baseball players. Baseball? Yes, in fact I’m joining the Providence College “Sea Beggars” baseball team for breakfast this morning. When asked about the food, Martin Casillas, star third baseman, replied enthusiastically, “It’s good! They take good care of us here!” Lining up behind me is Summer Hornecker, accompanied by her friend Abigayl Doiron, both standouts on the women’s volleyball team. Unprompted, Hornecker declares, “Their breakfast is amazing! We try to come every day for breakfast.” The dining operation is serviced by Simply Gourmet Plus, a local catering company owned and managed by Gerardo Garibay. Ably assisted in the dining room by his onsite manager — the ever cheerful and helpful Silvia Gutierrez — and a staff of nine employees, Garibay has been working with Fuller’s dining facility for 20 years, having originally moved here from the kitchens of Caltech. Suffice it to say, Garibay has something figured out here. The menu includes breakfast entrees served until 11 a.m., Mexican specialties, salads, sandwiches, wraps and paninis. There are also always three Daily Specials. On my last visit, the specials included: chicken flautas with rice and beans; beef Stroganoff with noodles and vegetables; and a fish burger with fries and a small soda included. Finally, here’s the real hook to this story: if you choose one of the specials, you will be paying the highest price found on the menu: $7.95. That’s right, $7.95. On any given breakfast, lunch or dinner tab here, you will likely get change back on a $10 bill. My breakfast burrito? $6.25. (Attention members of the local breakfast burrito cult: this burrito competes with Lucky Boy’s lauded version just across Walnut, where you will spend $6.95 and sit in a vinyl booth.) Meat lover’s skillet? $6.75. How about the popular “McFuller” breakfast sandwich? $3.25. lunch? An array of burgers, including chicken and vegetarian options run from $3.75 to $5.50 with combos including fries and a soda ranging from $6.25 to $7.75. There are three composed salads: the “Santa Fe” with chicken, cheddar and tortilla strips; the traditional chicken Caesar; or the wonton Oriental salad, all priced at $6.50. Sriracha chicken wrap ? $5.95. jalapeno, chicken and onions panini? $6.25. You get the idea… Also, please bear in mind — unlike much standard cafeteria fare — these items are not precooked and packaged but made fresh to order, by the cheery chefs helming the grill top. Have we just discovered the finest breakfast and lunch bargain in the land hiding in plain sight? How is it that I was anointed to deliver this revelation to our beloved readers? Divine providence is the only answer!

PAYING FOR HIDDEN COSTS

FUN WAYS TO MAKE EDUCATION MORE AFFORDABLE

A

s most parents know, even a free public school education comes with certain expenses that over the course of a school year can really add up. While many of these expenditures feel unavoidable, there are certain ways that families can save money on the hidden costs of schooling. Skill Share Is your child struggling in one class and excelling in another? Before coughing up the cost of a tutor to get your child up to speed, consider a skill share as a free and friendly alternative. There is likely a student in your child’s class who possesses the opposite strengths and challenges. Encourage your child to team up with that student and become cooperative study buddies. Online Calculators All-in-one web-based mathematics resources can eliminate the expense of a calculator and other math supplies. For example, ClassPad.net, free to educators and students, is a tool geared toward K-12 and beyond that exceeds the functionality of a calculator. A user-friendly tool that’s also offering educators an innovative way to share lesson plans, among its many features are a virtual protractor and compass, and a math-based text editor that provides a rich assortment of mathematical templates. This web-based calculator is designed to be equally usable by keyboard and mouse as with touch-based platforms and gives users the ability to create folders, organize and share work. To register, or for more information, visit ClassPad.net. Organize a Fundraiser From band uniforms to chess club fees, participation in extracurricular and after school activities frequently comes with a price tag. To reduce or eliminate such expenses for not only your child, but for every club or team member, consider spearheading a fundraiser and getting everyone involved. From car washes to silent auctions, fundraisers do more than the name implies, building team spirit among participants and community awareness of the club’s goals and accomplishments. With a few tricks and some new tech, your family can save significantly on the cost of school. (StatePoint) n 18 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.30.20 | EDUCATION & ENRICHMENT

WORK IT OFF COMPANIES CAN HELP EMPLOYEES WITH PROBLEMS REPAYING STUDENT LOANS

A

fter paying monthly student loan minimums, many Americans have just enough to cover basic living expenses, which means that when unexpected expenses arise, they often end up defaulting on their student loans. It’s no wonder that student loan debt is a top cause of financial stress for so many. There’s good news, though. Not only can employers help employees with student loan debt, but doing so is in everyone’s best interest. Here’s how: Reducing Anxiety A growing number of employees are entering the workforce with student loan debt. About 43 million adult Americans carry a federal student loan, owing $1.5 trillion in federal student loan debt. Americans also owe an estimated $119 billion in student loans from private sources not backed by the government, according to the Center for American Progress. Experts say that this debt is causing anxiety and a distracted workforce, with many people spending hours of their workday wondering how to meet financial commitments. A majority of borrowers with student loan debt report being worried about paying off their student loans, according to research reported by Phy.org from the University of Missouri, research which also found a strong link between student loans and mental stress for borrowers. According to research, those with student loans say that getting help with refinancing or repaying their loans would ease their stress so they can focus on their job. When such assistance is offered, employees appreciate that their employer cares about their financial well-being, and ultimately becomes more engaged and involved in the success of the business. Refinancing Education Some may wonder whether refinancing is worth their time and effort, but research shows that many people who take out student loans have a high interest rate, and on average borrowers take 20 years to pay off their student loan debts. Instead of continuing to pay a high rate for the lifetime of the loan, employers can work with education benefits providers, such as BenefitEd, to direct employees toward private refinancing options such as U-fi. Even saving a small amount each month can substantially lower the total cost paid over the life of the loan. Employees are likely to appreciate having the option to refinance loans as well as receive education and financial advice from their employers, say experts who name supporting employees’ financial health as a great way to increase employee loyalty and engagement. Avoiding Loan Default Nationally, the default rate on student loans is increasing. In 2018 alone, student loan delinquencies amounted to over $166 billion. Missed payments cawn affect someone’s credit score for years. It can also affect employment opportunities as some employers are now checking candidates’ credit scores before making job offers. If employees receive advice on refinancing their student loans or receive repayment assistance from employers, they’ll be more likely to make their monthly payments and less likely to deal with the consequences of a poor credit score. To learn more about how employers can support future and current employee financial needs, visit youbenefited.com. There are many ways companies can support their employees who are currently managing student loans, and when they do, experts say they’ll have a happier, healthier and more grateful workforce. FUTURE LEADERS

F

SCHOOLS CAN PLAY AN INSTRUMENTAL ROLE IN EMPOWERING YOUNG STUDENTS

rom encouraging dialogue on mental health to initiating grassroots fundraising efforts for pediatric cancer, students across the country are choosing issues they’re passionate about and generating real change. Parents, educators and community members may ask a pertinent question: how can we develop this initiative in every child? While some might view leadership as an innate quality, new research commissioned by Lead4Change suggests that students can emerge as leaders with the right school curriculum. The independent research study measured change in key leadership skills in middle and high schoolers who completed the Lead4Change Student Leadership Program, a curriculum that teaches students to lead, create and implement team projects to meet a need in their community. Before and after participating in the program, students completed a survey that measured several different behavioral factors. The study found that students experienced significant changes in their growth, including leadership skills (60 percent of students improved), respect for others (54 percent) and ambition and innovation (53 percent). Fifty-six percent of participants gained greater commitment to vision — they were more capable of describing a compelling image of what our future could look like and were able to identify milestones to reach that vision. One example of the program’s success was at Wantagh Middle School on Long Island, New York. Following a school survey that measured students’ mental health, a young student group melted old crayons to create aromatherapy candles to reduce stress. Proceeds were donated to the Born This Way Foundation, an organization committed to supporting young people’s wellness. Students also took their story to the school board, requesting action. They led efforts in their school to create designated quiet restorative rooms. “We learned to embrace failure and use it as a tool to get better,” says Patti Andreolas, a teacher who oversaw the project. “It became more about the journey and watching the students evolve.” The survey also examined specific qualities integral for leaders, finding a statistically significant increase in students’ ability to engage, motivate and guide others to achieve goals that result in their desired changes. For example, after the Lead4Change program, students at Menchville High School in Newport News, Virginia were united by a drive to improve their community, developing a comprehensive plan that included collecting food, volunteering for a local food bank, participating in antibullying campaigns and creating a “Teacher Positivity” campaign. “As a group, we learned to incorporate everyone’s ideas and delegate work to achieve our main goals,” says Ashley Johnson, a 10th grader involved in the project. “Personally, the project helped me with prioritizing, time management and learning to balance responsibilities.” For more study results and program information, visit lead4change.org/research. While making an impact can seem difficult due to the complexity of issues affecting communities, leadership curriculum gives students the skills to address these matters head-on. The study found that younger students and those with lower scores at the start of the program benefited the most from participating, demonstrating that anyone can become a leader when the proper skills are nurtured. FULL STEAM AHEAD SCHOOLS ARE CHANGING TO IMPROVE ADVANCED LEARNING

A

s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) learning has grown in prominence in classrooms across the country, so has the role of tools and resources facilitating this approach to learning. Here are five examples of how technology is supporting the integration of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics in classrooms today. • Lessons Brought to Life: Virtual reality in the classroom has the power to immerse students in STEAM material more fully than ever before, while giving students with engineering proclivities the opportunity to create their own educational content. As the cost of this technology becomes more accessible, a growing number of schools are benefiting. • Visualized Math: The ability to visualize mathematical concepts can support students’ grasp of the material. And expanded features on the latest models of graphing calculators give students the ability to easily draw three-dimensional graphs such as planes, cylinders and spheres, and view them from various angles in order to better analyze their shape. The expanded features and improved catalog function of the fx-CG50 PRIZM graphing calculator, for example, includes a cross-section option and special zoom function, enabling students to further examine graphs for deeper analysis. Offering a color LCD with a full textbook-style display, students can even plot graphs over pictures of real-life scenes. • Art Lessons Without the Mess: New free and inexpensive educational apps give art teachers an opportunity to deliver lessons without the mess. From charcoal drawing to pottery to painting, the digital experience can faithfully replicate the real thing, so that young artists learn all the fine art principles needed to create a masterpiece. • Accelerated Music Instruction: Research continues to support the vital role that music education plays in STEAM learning. And now, new tools are making it easy for educators to introduce students to a wide scope of tones, rhythms and genres, and offer students an opportunity to learn at a pace that keeps them motivated. For example, the Casio CT-X700 portable keyboard for advanced beginners to intermediate players features a Step-Up Lesson system that displays proper finger placement and notation, allowing users to easily learn songs. A USB-MIDI port connects to any Mac, PC, Android or iOS device so that the world of music is literally at the fingertips of students. • Better Presentation: From sines and cosines to a map of the galaxy, no matter what subject is being taught, teachers know it isn’t always easy to maintain the class’s attention. But keeping students engaged is easier today, thanks to the latest generation of projectors, which offer sharper visuals and new educational solutions that help teachers maintain their momentum with modern, streamlined lessons. Those from the Superior Series from Casio LampFree Projectors allow teachers to select a presenter from anywhere in a classroom and project their device onto the screen, as well as control projection remotely using their own smart device anywhere in the classroom. Today’s students are not only deriving the benefits of an integrative STEAM approach to learning, they have some of the coolest new tools to support their education. MYTHS VS. FACTS RESOURCES EXIST TO HELP YOU GET TRAINED, CERTIFIED AND EMPLOYED IN A SKILLED TRADE CAREER

LEARNING ON THE GO

W

ith the demand for skilled trade workers growing nationwide, you may be looking to launch your career, change professional paths, or hone current skills in order to advance in your industry.. As you go about the process, consider these few myths and facts about landing a skilled trade job: • Myth: It will be hard to find training in my local area. • Fact: There are numerous free resources available to connect you with local training opportunities. Veterans and their spouses, for example, can seek career assistance from organizations such as amvets.org. In the case of the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) industry, locating training organizations in your zip code is as simple as visiting natex.org, the website of the North American Technician Excellence (NATE), which provides online services to English and Spanish speakers, as well as certification and recertification. • Myth: All training programs are pretty much the same. • Fact: Not all certification programs offer the same quality education, nor are they associated with the same breadth of job opportunities. Those in the HVACR industry, for example, can set themselves apart by getting NATE training. “Not only do contractors prefer working with NATE-certified technicians, consumers look for this certification as well because it ensures that a knowledgeable, well-trained and highly experienced technician will service their home heating or cooling system,” says Anthony Spagnoli, NATE’s director of training and education. • Myth: Skilled trade careers don’t offer room for growth. • Fact: Skilled trade careers are in especially high demand today, offering longterm job security, a good living and room for advancement. To learn more about existing growth opportunities, tune into the podcast “Blue is the New White.” Available for download on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, this is also a good resource for those seeking to get their foot in the door. • Myth: Career support will be hard to come by once I receive my certification. • Fact: Connecting with a seasoned professional who can act as your mentor is a great way to build relationships, network and learn as you go. This is especially important for those who have traditionally been underrepresented in a given industry. You can find mentors on-the-job, at industry events and through online resources such as Women in HVACR, which among its initiatives, connects young women in the industry with mentors. Visit womeninhvacr.org/mentorship to learn more. Looking to break into HVACR or another skilled trade industry? Check out available resources which can help you get trained, certified and employed with confidence. (StatePoint) n 24 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.30.20 | EDUCATION & ENRICHMENT

STUDENTS CAN ACHIEVE ACADEMICALLY BY USING THE SAME TOOLS AT HOME AND SCHOOL

utting-edge technologies have long been used in classrooms to help students engage with material and better grasp tough concepts. And now, many of these same technologies are becoming available for use at home. Here are a few ways that educational technology can help students transition from classroom instruction to home study seamlessly: • Digital Learning: Software tools make it easier for students to connect with classroom materials long after the bell rings. Apps such as Edsby, give students access to lesson plans, study guides, homework assignments and school calendars 24/7, while providing a convenient platform for teachers to communicate with parents. • Better Visuals: Sharp, bright imagery provided by ultra short-throw projectors, such as the XJ-UT351WN from Casio, allow students in even the smallest classrooms to harness the power of visual learning. And now that the market has widened accessibility to high-quality projectors, students can use them in bedroomsized spaces to review lesson plans, research term papers, cram for exams and more. • More Math: Mathematics software is giving students an all-in-one platform to grasp new concepts both during classroom instruction and while doing homework. The free online calculator, Classpad.net, includes calculation, graphing, geometry and statistics functionality and is particularly versatile for students on-the-go, as it auto-saves work to a free cloud account that can be accessed anywhere, as well as allows students to customize their workspace with resizable and draggable “sticky notes.” • Updated Reading: E-readers give students a burden-free way to take home vast quantities of reading materials with them, and an ink-free way to annotate text. When connected to the Internet, students can collaborate on group projects or discuss passages in-depth with each other from anywhere, and teachers are able to see how students are interacting with the reading. As access to technology tools widens, students will benefit from the seamless transition that using the same platforms at home and school provides. (StatePoint) n

‘A TRAGIC FARCE’

ALFRED MOLINA HELPS BRING HUMOR, EMPATHY AND LOVE TO ‘THE FATHER’ AT PASADENA PLAYHOUSE BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

A

lfred Molina enjoys the Pasadena Playhouse, so it was natural for him to accept the lead role in the theater’s latest production, Florian Zeller’s “The Father.” “It’s my local theater. I keep telling everyone it’s just a 12-minute commute,” Molina says with a laugh. During a recent interview, Molina’s conversation is peppered with wisecracks. In “The Father,” he plays André, who is suffering from a memory lapse and, as Molina says, it’s clear as the play progresses his situation is worsening. But don’t let that description fool you. “It’s full of expectations that get confounded somewhat,” Molina says. “He’s clearly losing his memory and sense of who he is and who other people are. It’s sounds depressing, but Florian has written in the style of a farce — a tragic farce. “It’s a very funny play. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s so much more. It’s emotionally powerful and really packs a punch.”

‘Profound Impact’ “The Father” deals with a theme and ideas that everyone faces — aging and dying. Molina says when the cast was initially rehearsing around the table, they shared how they were affected by dementia. “Most people have relatives who have it,” he says. “We were all working on a play and we were empathetic. We all have an empathy for this situation. It’s almost an epidemic. Within the next 25 years, 1 in 3 Americans will have been touched by the disease or suffering from it in some shape or form.” Molina says he discovered the vast majority of research dollars around the world used to go toward finding a cure for Alzheimer’s and dementia. Now, it’s going toward preventative measures. “It’s a strange disease. It’s a cowardly disease,” he says. “Once it’s diagnosed, it’s already established a hold. As the body starts to break down, it ceases to send certain messages to the body. You’re finding it hard to swallow. You can’t eat. We were talking about how unfair it is. “If you get a cancer diagnosis — God forbid — early enough, you can fight it, face the illness and do what’s necessary to fight it. Alzheimer’s, it creeps up and establishes itself and there’s nothing you can do. It’s a one-way street. The play’s dealing with a very, very critical and timely topic. It’s full of humor, empathy and love.” The Pasadena Playhouse is just as excited to have Molina. “Alfred Molina is one of the greatest actors of our time,” says Danny Feldman, Pasadena Playhouse producing artistic director. “We’ve been searching for a play to do together here at the Playhouse since I started a few years ago. ‘The Father’ had a profound impact on me. I distinctly remember reading the script in my office and getting to the end and feeling breathless. I sent it to Fred and he quickly said, ‘This is the one.’ I think it will be a performance that people will be talking about for years to come.” A Yes Man Molina doesn’t like to say no. As a result, he’s worked in a variety of films that began with the landmark “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” “A big highlight was ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark,’ even though it was the best part of 40 years ago,” Molina says. “It was my first movie and what started my film career. It’s a real highlight because it was the beginning of everything. I’ve been very fortunate. There hasn’t been anything I’ve done that has been a disappointment. Some things have been more successful and more satisfying. I haven’t regretted anything.” He recalls a conversation between “Raiders” star Harrison Ford and director Steven Spielberg on the set. “No one thought it was going to do anything,” Molina says about “Raiders.” “I was sharing a lunch with Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford when we were shooting at the studios in Elstree in London. We were all having lunch in the commissary and they invited me to join. I was thrilled to be sitting there. I was sitting with the director and the star. I was just a nobody. I was just listening. “They were having a conversation about the movie and the expectations for it. They said they had no idea what this was going to be like. It bucked the trend 32 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.30.20

of movies of that time. It was a throwback to a much more innocent, much more romantic era in filmmaking. It was of the ’30s and ’40s. When the movie was such a huge hit, I think everyone was delighted.” The London-born Molina has lived and worked in the United States since the early ’90s. His career spans over 45 years with more than 200 credits in theater, television and film. After “Raiders,” he worked with directors as diverse as Richard Donner, Mike Leigh, Jim Jarmusch, Lasse Hallström, Mira Nair, Stephen Frears and Julie Taymor. His theater work includes the Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre, London’s West End, and Broadway where he has been a three-time Tony Award nominee. He has also worked extensively in Los Angeles, with productions at the Mark Taper Forum, Geffen Playhouse, and The New American Theatre. This is his first full production with Pasadena Playhouse. Molina doesn’t have a favorite project. He enjoys everything he does. “If you’re lucky enough to choose what you do, then you read a play and it speaks to you or it doesn’t,” he says. “You see yourself in that role or you don’t. “It’s not necessarily an intellectual or logical process. Sometimes the reason is very arbitrary — could be the director, another actor you really want to work with, the theater is beautiful. Ultimately, it’s all about what’s on the page. I also never say no. I’m a bit of a tart.” n “The Father” will be performed at various times Wednesday, Feb. 5, to Sunday, March 1. Pasadena Playhouse, 39 S. El Molino Ave., Pasadena. DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS, The Unraveling (ATO): ★★★

Frontman Patterson Hood and bandmate Mike Cooley howl with indignation that recalls the urgency of career highs “Decoration Day” and “The Dirty South.” “Babies in Cages” wrenches to a bluesy groove, while “Thoughts and Prayers” pairs hopeful country strums with merciless damnation (“The Powers That Be are in for shame and comeuppance/ When Generation Lockdown has their day”); white supremacist violence, societal corporatization and the opioid epidemic also take hits from thundering drums and guitars, as does the anxiety poisoning the national spirit until, as Hood swears during “Armageddon’s Back in Town,” “you can’t tell the darkness from the flame.” Righteous rock. ‘Never Too Old for Melancholy’ SANTA BARBARA ALT-ROCKERS TOAD THE WET SPROCKET CELEBRATE 30 YEARS AT THE ROSE SATURDAY “Nothing’s so cold As closing the heart when all we need Is to free the soul But we wouldn’t be that brave I know… All I want is to feel this way To be this close, to feel the same” — Toad the Wet Sprocket, “All I Want” Funny how certain music can soundtrack life passages with such surround-sound clarity that it teleports us out of the present moment when we hear it. Toad the Wet Sprocket’s albums “Fear” and “Dulcinea” still feel so immediate I forget it was in the ’90s that I was introduced to them, during a hot-cold, music-fixated relationship with a guy who was sweet, funny, decent, and wrong for me. Funny-not funny how that happens, and how there’s always a song that can exhilarate and suck you under. “I wasn’t looking for heaven or hell Just someone to listen to stories I tell” —“Stories I Tell” 34 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.30.20

We crowded into a Hollywood club for Toad; other nights for Human Drama and New Model Army. On my own I’d play blues and country; together we’d listen to Hothouse Flowers and Toad. I cranked up the volume for “Something’s Always Wrong.” It was pre-Napster, and the album was a popular art form. “Fear” and “Dulcinea” went platinum. I’d already moved on when the Santa Barbara alt-rockers split up in 1998. By 2016, when I interviewed Toad frontman Glen Phillips for this paper before he headlined South Pasadena’s Eclectic Fest, he was promoting his latest solo album, the divorce-grieving “Swallowed By the New,” and rebalancing his solo career with Toad, who’d finally released another record (“New Constellation”). It was a thoughtful conversation that got shoehorned into a few paragraphs. He talked about happy music vs. joyful music (“Happy is kinda cheap, and joy I think is always about a broader perspective”), transition, loss, gratitude, politics, and figuring how and whether to play songs as a father that he composed

at 20. “We’re never too old for melancholy,” he observed. True. In my notes I wrote that Phillips is something of a bridge between generations — between classic singer-songwriters and angsty ’90s rockers, between pop revivalists and contemporary Americana craftsmen. Still true. Saturday, Toad headlines at The Rose. In a few months, they join fellow ’90s survivors Barenaked Ladies and Gin Blossoms for the Last Summer on Earth tour. Toad may share new tunes (they’ve reportedly been recording), but it will be the old ones that fans line up to hear from Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, keyboardist Dean Dinning and new-ish drummer Josh Daubin. There’s plenty of cathartic California uplift in those jangly chords, but the existential questions in Phillips’ lyrics are still worth asking, and give their songs a pensive edge that cuts against nostalgia. n ad the Wet Sprocket headline at the Rose at Paseo Colorado, 245 E. Green St., Pasadena, 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1; $28-$68. Info: (888) 645-5006. toadthewetsprocket.com, wheremusicmeetsthesoul.com

Clever 19-track song cycle from creatively restless brothers David and Peter Brewis that mushroomed out of a project undertaken with the UK’s Imperial War Museum about WWI’s aftereffects. Bookended by instrumentals evoking war’s surreality and scars, it draws esoteric connections to modern times. The synth-stabbing “Between Nations” segues into the legato piano and guitar of “A Change of Heir”; pop hooks and a martial drumbeat drive “Do You Read Me?” about the aviation industry’s rise; war reparations translate into a Talking Heads-worthy riff (“Money is a Memory”); funky dance tune “Only in a Man’s World” celebrates the development of women’s sanitary napkins. Emotionally dissonant but compositionally compelling . Field-music.co.uk

TORRES, Silver Tongue (Merge): HHH

“Are you planning to love me through the bars of a golden cage?” Occupying producer’s chair alone for her fourth album, Mackenzie Scott sounds more personal, assessing love’s fears, giddy thrills, deflating losses and stages with dispassionate clarity. That paradoxical distance, reinforced by the push-pull dynamic between Scott’s vulnerable vocals and cold synths, imparts a strangely humanizing charge to standout tracks such as “Good Scare,” “Records of Your Tenderness” (“You smoked Parliament blues in my living room/ And I went and hoarded the ash”), the guitar-warmed “Gracious Day” and “Good Grief” (“There’s no such thing”). torrestorrestorres.bandcamp.com

COURTEENERS, More. Again. Forever. (Ignition): HHH Six albums into their career, the Manchester veterans venture beyond their indie-rock base with stock-taking balladry (“Better Man”) and pounding hooks that all but demand concert sing-alongs (“Heart Attack”). Frontman Liam Fray mangles metaphors (“Hanging Off Your Cloud”) but doesn’t shy away from vulnerability or angered pride while measuring distances traveled, personally and commercially, particularly with the angsty “Heavy Jacket” (“Don’t get me started on the lifestyle engineers/ Wake up one day with Van Gogh’s hands but nothing between the ears”). thecourteeners.com
