Racing Chihuahuas in Texas

After gloating about our room-temperature Christmas weather here in Altadena, my sister, Mary — who lives in Rapid City, South Dakota — almost hung up on me. Telling her I could smell lemon blossoms was kind of mean. Considering it was double-digits below zero in the Black Hills near where she lives, I couldn’t blame her for her not wanting to talk to me. She changed subjects from the weather to talk about a cousin we hadn’t seen in decades; Mary had news.

“I heard from Eunice. Her beloved husband, Bob, died unexpectedly.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” I said. We continued to chat a bit; how Eunice had a good marriage, how she’d stayed in Texas all these years.

“What were they doing in Tyler, Texas, anyway? Eunice had always been a California girl.”

“Well,” my sister said. “This is so weird. Eunice said a really joyful part of her life with her late husband was that they raced Chihuahuas together.”

“Raced Chihuahuas? That’s disgusting! And they’re supposedly evangelical Christians. What’s next? Chihuahua fighting?”

“I know,” Mary said. “It’s just really hard to imagine.”

“Just think how small the jockeys must be! But seriously, this is a case for the animal cruelty people. Just think of those little doggies, shivering while they wait to be let out of the starting gate,” I said.

“I really had a hard time believing it when she said it. Frankly, it took me by surprise.”

“I know. I thought that strict Christians were against gambling. I’ve never heard of such a thing. But think of the names for those dogs: Shiver-me-Timbers, A Whole Lot of Shakin’ Goin’ On, or Pea Biscuit,” I said. “Maybe it’s a new Texan thing.”

I added, “Eunice must be thrilled right now, seeing as she’s anti-choice, anti-gay, anti-women’s lib. But dog racing?”

“It struck me as very odd,” Mary said.

“Did you ask her where they race? I mean, what kind of tracks do they use? Did you get any details?”

“No, because I was so stunned, I just didn’t know what to say. Remember, Aunt Beatrice loved little dogs so much. She would be appalled if she were alive and knew what Eunice was doing.”

I said, “Oh, yes, Bea would be devastated.”

We both went into a reverie for a minute until a torrent of questions flooded out of us.

“The Chihuahuas certainly couldn’t have much stamina, so I doubt they could use Greyhound racetracks,” I said. “What kind of betting goes on? Are there Trifectas? Pee Wee Derbies? Do they ever race against Yorkies or Mini Dobies? Is there a whole network of secret Chihuahua racetracks across Texas and possibly reaching into Mexico? Did our cousin somehow get involved with something dangerous to the dogs and the people involved? These live animal sports characters can get pretty rough. I think I should call the people at Animal Planet — they do great investigative reporting. The ‘Animal Cops’ show used to be really good. I’m sure they’d love to bust a Chihuahua racing ring.”

“You don’t suppose they chase a mechanical rabbit around the track like they do for Greyhounds?” Mary wondered.

“I don’t think so,” I responded. “I don’t think the Chihuahua is a natural rabbit predator. Of course, if you get a Chihuahua angry enough, it might chase a rabbit. But a mechanical rabbit would be bigger than most of the racers!”

Thoughts of those little Chihuahuas neck and neck, pounding their little paws into the turf with haunches glistening as they went into the home stretch, made me wonder what the heck had gotten into Eunice. The thought of Chihuahuas being pumped with steroids made me shiver.

“Maybe they hook up Snausages, drag them behind a golf cart and chase that around the track,” I said. “But it just all seems so unlike Eunice. She used to be such a nice person. I can’t see her doing something this unsavory.”

“Me neither. But Eunice said that’s what she and Bob liked to do together. For years, apparently.”

“Are you going to talk to her more about it?”

“I don’t know,” Mary said.

“I want her email address. I think there’s a column here. I just have to interview her about it. But I should probably wait since her husband passed away recently, don’t you think?”

“Yes, that’s probably a good idea. It was interesting talking to her after such a long time. You know, she even has a Texas accent now. I had a hard time understanding her.”

•CARTOON•

Something clicked for me.

“Could it be that you aren’t used to her accent, and she might have said that she ‘raised’ Chihuahuas with Bob?”

Silence.

“That makes more sense,” I continued. “Although I was sort of warming up to the idea of Chihuahua racing. I see a whole product line: teeny-tiny sweaters with numbers, floral victory collars and itsy-bitsy silks.”

So in a real-life tribute to Gilda Radner’s beloved “Saturday Night Live” character Emily Litella, I told my sister, “Raising Chihuahuas. Oh, that’s very different. Never mind.”

Note: I haven’t used my cousin’s or aunt’s real names. While I used a smidgeon of “poetic license,” this conversation actually happened. Really.

California Apartment Association challenges Measure H

Pasadena’s Measure H officially took effect Dec. 22, but opponents to the city’s new rent control initiative have begun their efforts to have it declared illegal by the courts.

On Dec. 16, the California Apartment Association filed a lawsuit and issued a request for a preliminary injunction to prevent the law from taking full effect.

The California Apartment Association (CAA) is a nonprofit organization and is the largest statewide rental housing association in the United States. They represent more than 50,000 rental property owners. Before Measure H passed in November, the group led an extensive opposition effort against the ballot initiative.

After Measure H passed with 52% of the vote in November, Pasadena Weekly spoke with Ryan Bell, one of Measure H’s campaign organizers. At the time, Bell stated he did not foresee any complications in implementing the initiative because the Pasadena Tenants Union modeled it after other rent control legislation throughout California.

Now, however, CAA alleges that Measure H fundamentally changes Pasadena’s City Charter, rather than amending it, through its requirement that the city creates an independent Rental Housing Board to address rent control issues and landlord disputes. CAA’s goal is to have Measure H declared illegal in its entirety. However, the lawsuit also attacks several provisions individually in hopes of having the law repealed, at least in part.

One such provision CAA is challenging is the relocation assistance requirement written into Measure H. The requirement states that owners of rent control-exempt units pay relocation assistance to tenants who must vacate the property due to rent increases of more than 5% over the rent control limits. They argue that the relocation assistance provision penalizes property owners, who are exercising their rights to increase rents.

The Pasadena City Council is expected to receive more information about Measure H this month. The initial hearing in the lawsuit will be on March 30. Although the issue could be resolved at this initial hearing, it’s likely the hearing will be when the superior court will set a trial date. In the meantime, CAA’s injunction has neither been approved or denied.

Victim of police beating calls for officer firings

An Altadena man who said he was beaten by Pasadena police officers Lerry Esparza and Zachary Lujan asked the PPD to reconsider its decision to not fire them during a late-December press conference.

“The reason I’m here is for accountability,” said Ballew, a former John Muir High School basketball player.

“(To me) that looks like opening back up the investigation and a re-evaluation of (the Pasadena Police Department’s) policies. That means accountability for the Pasadena Police Department, accountability for officers involved in breaking my leg, and anyone else that was involved in that department.”

Five years ago, the then-21-year-old Ballew was pulled over by Esparza and Lujan for excessive window tinting when he was driving north on Fair Oaks Avenue.

Shortly afterward, Ballew was booked for felony assault after resisting arrest as they beat him with fists and a baton. He suffered a broken leg and facial injuries.

The district attorney rejected the case for felony assault against Ballew shortly after the incident in 2017. Following the release of video footage of the encounter between Ballew, Esparza and Lujan, many in Pasadena demanded the PPD fire Esparza and Lujan, said Ballew’s lawyer, John Burton, in a statement.

Three years later, the Pasadena Police Department found the actions of Esparza and Lujan to be within departmental policy, except Esparza did not turn on his body camera. Now, Ballew is suing the Pasadena Police Department.

In November 2022, U.S. District Judge Fernando Olguin rejected Pasadena’s motion for summary judgment in favor of Esparza and Lujan, noting sufficient evidence to support the reasonable assumption that the traffic stop was racially motivated.

Olguin also described PPD’s attempt to rebuff Ballew’s evidence as “woefully deficient.”

“Here a reasonable jury could easily find — after considering, for example, the video recordings offering multiple perspectives of the encounter — that Ballew’s behavior was rather innocuous and that there was nothing about his conduct that was unpredictable or would cause any reasonable officer to believe there was an immediate threat to his or her safety,” Olguin said.

At the press conference, Ballew said officers treated him poorly after transporting him to the hospital. Ballew’s devastated mother and sister also attended.

“I didn’t have any anesthesia (for my broken leg) for what felt like forever,” Ballew said.

“And then to be lying on a gurney, and all you hear is police officers making jokes … They didn’t care how I was doing otherwise. I’m handcuffed to the gurney — there was no medical staff.”

Ballew said the problems continued when he was transported to the county jail. At one juncture, Ballew said his cuffs were so tight he sustained deep cuts to his wrists. Officers did not send his medication to the county jail fast enough for Ballew to use it before being released.

In his ruling, Olguin noted that out of 197 documented gang unit traffic stops, 44% were of Black individuals, and 55% were Latino. Only 1% were recorded as white by documenting officers. Ballew was not a gang member.

Ballew said he still feels targeted by Pasadena police, and that he has been questioned by officers during other traffic stops who have asked if he is the “same Ballew from five years ago.”

“Hopefully, this case will shine a light on all the times Black and brown people are being targeted,” Ballew said in his statement. “Pasadena is known for covering things up. This is something they can’t (cover up). The judge has seen the statistical evidence that (proves) we’re being targeted. And now it is time for us to come together (to) stand up and say, ‘No more,’ because I know we’re all tired of it. I know I am.”

The trial against Esparza and Lujan is set to begin on Tuesday, April 25.

Howlin’ Ray’s: Hot chicken champs arrive on Arroyo

When chef Johnny Ray Zone opened Howlin’ Ray’s in a quiet corner of Far East Plaza in Chinatown in the spring of 2016, he launched a local craze for Nashville-style hot fried chicken that continues to reverberate beyond LA.

Despite a burgeoning profusion of competitors — including Kim Prince the Nashville heiress of the original Prince hot chicken dynasty — Howlin’ Ray’s continues to command loyalty and long waiting lines for its signature hot chicken.

Prior to his hot chicken revelation, which he started from a food truck, Zone compiled an impressive culinary resume, working under notable chefs in haute cuisine. From Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant The London, when it garnered a Michelin star, to Nobu Matsuhisa’s Nobu in West Hollywood, to Thomas Keller’s team at Bouchon in Beverly Hills, Zone’s experience did not seem to suggest a future in spicy fried chicken sandwiches.

However, in 2014 Zone ventured to Nashville, where he staged in the kitchen of famed southern chef Sean Brock’s restaurant, Husk. While there, he was introduced to the regional delicacy of hot fried chicken. Zone was hooked and realized that there was fresh novelty to the dish that he could personally tweak and introduce back home in LA.

Working in partnership with his wife, Amanda Chapman, Zone perfected his own spectrum of spice combinations and launched Howlin’ Ray’s initially as a food truck in 2015.

Six months later, he had the opportunity to open what became the primary culinary tentpole at Far East Plaza in DTLA’s Chinatown.

Though seemingly an unlikely fit for the neighborhood, Howlin’ Ray’s opened the gates for a new variety of young entrepreneurial chefs — like Alvin Cailan of Eggslut and Chase Valencia of Lasita — to break in, experiment and help establish Chinatown as a new culinary hub. In many respects, Zone’s take on Nashville hot chicken was an important catalyst for some of the most exciting culinary innovation in pre-pandemic LA.

The Chinatown location closed its intimate dining room on the advent of the pandemic lockdown and quickly pivoted to a simple take-out window that still serves long lines of hot chicken enthusiasts. Howlin’ Ray’s and its simple formula based on hot chicken sandwiches proved to be effectively resilient during the bleak months of lockdown, compared to many of their neighbors, whose operations shuttered entirely.

Now Pasadena plays host to Howlin’ Ray’s first brick-and-mortar dining room since the start of the pandemic. Opened on Nov. 16, on a now-bustling stretch of Arroyo Parkway — vying for attention with Shake Shack and Lucky Boy — the new Pasadena location has garnered as much attention as its original launch in Chinatown. For the moment, the hot chicken hub is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays to Sundays.

On an otherwise sleepy Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. during Christmas week, a line of 70 people stretched into the parking lot. In the buzzing dining room next to the large open kitchen, chef de cuisine Mario Aguilar surveyed the crowd.

“On average, the wait is 30 to 45 minutes — an hour at most,” he noted, adding that before the pandemic, the Chinatown location was known for waits of five to six hours on weekends.

Aguilar functions as the ostensible general manager of the Pasadena location, working with Julian Sanchez, director of operations.

“I’ve been with Howlin’ Ray’s since day one, when we opened April 27, 2016,” he said.

8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.05.23 •
• Jakob Layman/Submitted
Howlin’ Ray’s burst onto the scene in Chinatown’s Far East Plaza in 2016.

Aguilar exuded enthusiasm over his operation and the new Pasadena dining room, which seats up to 60 people and includes a spacious outdoor patio in back.

“I’ve known chef Johnny and Amanda for about 10 or 11 years,” Aguilar said.

“Chef Johnny is actually the first one who gave me a job at a restaurant, as a bar back when I was 21. I’ve always been a big fan of the way they operate, the way they manage, just their attention to detail and the mindset that they bring in.”

After Aguilar expressed an interest in continuing to work with the ambitious couple, they contacted him when he was managing restaurants in the Valley, prior to the Chinatown opening. “They were working the R&D side of Howlin’ Ray’s and gave me a call. I jumped at that chance,” Aguilar recalled.

Aguilar also noted that Howlin’ Ray’s raucous arrival on Arroyo Parkway was preceded by a quieter introduction to Pasadena in 2021.

“We had a ghost kitchen on Allen Avenue. You could order for pickup or delivery through the Postmates app,” Aguilar said.

“Or you could walk up and order to go. That was running for about a year and a half or so.”

Running out of a corner shop in a small strip mall next to Chaaste Family Market, the ghost kitchen operation allowed Howlin’ Ray’s to serve Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley, while successfully expanding into the local market, as they plotted the campaign to open on Arroyo Parkway.

In addition to its large, comfortable dining room, the Pasadena location is distinct from the Chinatown store in that it serves a selection of beer and wine.

Accordingly, there is a plan to eventually expand into evening hours.

“When we open for longer hours, we are going to be sure we’re 100% ready to go and it’s going to be up to our standards for quality and service,” Aguilar said.

Except for the beverage service, the menu at Howlin’ Ray’s Pasadena largely mirrors the Chinatown location, though there are changes planned for menu expansion as well.

The chicken at Howlin’ Ray’s comes spiced in six categories of heat — country (no heat); mild; medium; hot; x-hot and Howlin’.

The go-to entree is the “sando,” which is a boneless breast with slaw and the house “Comeback” sauce with pickles, served on a butter bun ($13). Chicken may also be ordered in quarters ($12) or half portions ($21); tenders (three for $12) or wings (three for $10).

A “Batters Box” of 12 wings ($36) or a whole chicken ($42) are options for larger parties. Sides priced at $4 include collard greens, macaroni salad, vinegar

slaw and fries.

“We are going to start working on a rotation of pricier, upscale sides,” Aguilar said.

“We played with that this week, where we sold shrimp and grits. Limited items at a higher price point, so the staff can showcase their culinary skills, working on tasty fun entrees that people can come and enjoy.

“We’re also thinking of adding banana pudding and there’s an entire secret menu as well.”

Secret menu?! Here’s the hot scoop.

“There’s a sandwich called ‘The Louis-style’ with white bread toasted with cheddar cheese on both sides,” Aguilar explained.

“‘Matt Fries’ is a bed of fries with cheese, collard greens and yellow pepper vinegar and Comeback sauce. There’s ‘Mario Fries,’ which are fully loaded fries with cheese, chopped chicken — at any heat level you would like — vinegar slaw, pickles and the house Comeback sauce. And fried pickles.”

Aguilar fully credited his colleagues: Matt Jacobson, the executive sous chef who runs the Chinatown operation; and Alison Barone, the senior hospitality specialist, who runs front-of-house in Pasadena.

Aguilar added, “She’s my floor general.” And Tess Meza, senior executive assistant and brand strategist. “She’s the brains of the operation,” Aguilar noted.

Howlin’ Ray’s sits in a crowded landscape of hot chicken restaurants. However, Aguilar has an answer for that.

“We run our own race,” Aguilar said. “Obviously there is a lot of hot chicken out on the market but that’s not where we put our attention. That’s not what we focus on. We put our focus on the customers themselves. We have a very close relationship with the customer base. We make sure what we do is true to ourselves and true to what we believe in.”

Skip the trip to Chinatown. The new location on Arroyo Parkway is more comfortable and offers beer and wine. As Aguilar said before rushing back to the frenetic kitchen, “If you want some good food and a good time with good quality people, Howlin’ Ray’s is definitely the place to come. We will treat you like family and make sure you have a great time.”

Bead & Design Show sparks imagination

For crafters, artisans and arts patrons, the biannual Pasadena Bead & Design Show is one of the season’s highlights.

Set for the Pasadena Hilton from Friday, Jan. 6, to Sunday, Jan. 8, the show features over 200 artisan exhibits, workshops, wholesale suppliers, and stalls with antiques, hand-crafted jewelry, designer clothing, jewelry-making supplies and gemstones.

Jewelry-making novices and experts alike can browse and shop directly from artisans and jewelry-making suppliers and participate in workshops including metal work, wire wrapping, beadwork, mixed media, enameling, soldering, decorative painting, jewelry design, chainmaille, crystal setting, hand knotting and polymer clay sculpting.

New this year is a silversmithing class, which will take students through the steps of smithing a ring with a gemstone setting. Classes are open to all ages and skill levels.

Other eclectic offerings from the Pasadena Bead & Design Show include lampwork and antique beads, hand-dyed silks, raku beads, hill tribe silver, antique pearls, tribal textiles, clay jewelry, eco-dyed clothing, woodblock fabric, vintage embellishments and hand-cut gemstones.

Small artisanal bead workshop, Mountain Robbins, a shop in attendance, specializes in lampwork beads and pendants.

“They do lampwork little animals, and they make these cute little frogs,” said Casey Kennerson, show manager.

“They’ve all got such personality and character. They also make handmade

bronze findings and everything to go with them. That’s one of my favorite setups.”

A featured shop is Klew Gallery, which creates floral and millefiori clay beads, pendants and jewelry, and the Mod Ant, an antique booth with vintage beads, pendants and jewelry. Kennerson remarked that Mod Ant is a favorite.

“They have this great assortment. It’s quite the treasure hunt to go through their booths. You can find all kinds of collectibles — from antique watches and jewelry to little knickknacks and boxes from the early 1900s to the 1960s.

Makers and patrons travel across the nation to participate in the exposition and explore the wide variety of handmade accessories and jewelry-making supplies.

“I love looking at everything,” Kennerson said. “We were we haven’t had any shows in December. So I’m looking forward to getting back out there and seeing all the artists and what they have for the new year and all the latest designs.”

Couple pursues self-reliance — even in Highland Park

Joseph Weinberger and his fiancée Dr. Madeleine Heller moved into a modest home in Highland Park two years ago and created a home and yard that’s as self-reliant as possible within the city.

They moved into the neighborhood so Heller could be closer to her medical residency in emergency medicine at LAC-USC.

They created special walls, underground cavities to trap rainwater, and landscaped their yard with all native plants or food-producing plants.

“Our overall motivation is to live in greater harmony with our communities of human and animal beings,” Weinberger said.

“We aim to increase our self-sufficiency and resiliency in terms of food and energy, promote a healthy local ecology, and share our learnings within our communities.”

Weinberger said they also want to set an example for reusing available materials rather than always buying new materials. In their work, they are using reused concrete, wood, eco-bricks and their own adobe mix made from straw from the local horse stable, soil from a demolition site, and discarded clay from a ceramic studio.

Recently, the term “permaculture” has been used to describe the practices that Weinberger is employing.

“We are definitely integrating permaculture principles, yet I’m hesitant to call what we’re doing ‘permaculture’ because these principles have been around for much longer in various indigenous cultures of the world than the somewhat newish field of permaculture,” he said.

“Permaculture” — meaning “permanent agriculture” — is a term coined by Australian Bill Mollison, who sought to catalog and quantify the ancient methods of farming and living.

Besides saving water and growing some of their food, they intend to provide low-income housing with their back house retrofit, and also to inspire others to practice these low-tech ecological methods.

“We are learning about building codes re: the greywater/composting toilets and hope to integrate composting toilets and as much greywater reuse as possible,” Weinberger said.

“Currently, sending the laundry water to the landscape is OK according to the code, though bath and shower water is a bit more complicated.”

The flora of the yard is very important, and there were mostly non-natives when they moved in. Now, they carefully select each new plant, herb, tree, bush, or vine based on water needs, as well as considering that the plant provides food, medicine, etc.

“We are thinking a lot about climate change in our plant selection, so we are not only selecting natives, but plants that come from hotter areas which will do well here

in the decades that follow, and provide the residents of this home and community with benefits into the future,” Weinberger said.

Their neighbors have been very enthusiastic about their ongoing work.

“Lots of conversations have started about plants, gardening and do-it-yourself enthusiasm,” Weinberger explained.

Neighbors walking by can readily see the Hugelkultur wall that was built in the front. Hugelkultur is actually a very ancient practice that has experienced a revival lately. It involves stacking or layering logs and then covering them with organic matter. This allows for soil rebuilding and moisture retention.

“In our case, there is a nice change in the front with a rise in elevation, which mimics natural surroundings which have an ebb and flow of wind and sun and water,” he said.

“Our plants grown in that section require very little watering and maintenance.”

To save water, they dug trenches and lined them with gravel to create “permeable pathways.” The idea is that rainwater, and even laundry water, will percolate into the soil easier and remain nearby for the plants to utilize. They will be directing their used laundry water into landscape, as well as the bath and kitchen sink. Part of their plan is to bury two 1,500-gallon rainwater cisterns to use for irrigation/emergency.

Weinberger is creating passive systems, and most are methods that have been employed throughout human history when we weren’t all so reliant upon modern methods.

For example, they plan to grow vines along the south side of the house to increase shading and keep the house cooler. They also took an old fence that fell along their north border, and set it back up, this time stuffed with eco-bricks.

“We revived the old fence by stuffing it with eco-bricks, which are plastic water bottles filled with plastic waste, and then we coated the whole fence with homemade adobe — all repurposed and recycled and found materials,” Weinberger said.

The eco-bricks for this project were collected by the designer and builder Rohan Sutherland and we transported them to the house (probably about 2,000 of them) to build the front fence.

“Given the amount of growing space we have, because the house is small compared to the lot, I hope we eventually have surplus to share with our neighbors and friends. I’m learning a lot as a first-time gardener,” Weinberger said. “We are trying to shift from a model of land ownership to land stewardship and from cultures of isolation and privatization to community and sharing.

“Our long-term plan is to move to the Pacific Northwest (where Madeleine grew up) when she finishes her medical residency in three years,” Weinberger said. “Then, we hope to find people who resonate with our values to take on the stewardship of this parcel.”

ARTS & CULTURE

Famed cellist joins Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra for Glendale performance

For the past 55 years, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) has provided an artistic outlet for some of the most prolific musicians from LA and beyond.

On Sunday, Jan. 15, the ensemble will be joined by cello virtuoso Sheku Kanneh-Mason for a performance at Glendale’s Alex Theatre.

“Our musicians are primarily from the film and television industry. They’re top studio players,” said Ben Cadwallader, executive director at LACO. “I like to joke that, I would say 99% of people in America have heard the musicians of LACO perform before. If you’ve watched a Marvel movie, Star Wars movie or Pixar movie, the chances are you’ve heard our players perform. These are really among the top musicians on the planet, and when they get together, because it’s not a full-time orchestra, it’s what we call a per service orchestra … it really is like family coming back together.

“They love making music together and you hear that in the intimacy and the connectedness of the music that they make. Our audiences and the communities that we serve really come to us for that kind of personal connection to the musicians and to the art.”

Cadwallader described each performance as a homecoming and expressed particular excitement for the Alex Theatre performance and the arrival of Kanneh-Mason, who Cadwallader named as “one of the world’s best cellists right now.”

Kanneh-Mason, winner of the 2016 BBC Young Musician competition and the first Black musician to win the award since its launch in 1978, will perform Austrian composer Joseph Haydn’s famed “Cello Concerto in D Major.” The orchestra, conducted by music director Jaime Martín, will also perform French composer Joseph Bologne’s “Symphony No. 1 in G Major” as well as the works of siblings Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn, including “Overture in C Major” and “Symphony No. 4 in A Major,” also known as “Italian,” to conclude the program.

“We are so lucky to have (Kanneh-Mason) performing with LACO,” Cadwallader said. “Jaime Martín and Sheku have worked together many times before. They love each other. They have very similar energy. Jaime’s energy from the podium and Sheku’s energy as a soloist work really nicely together. And the piece that they’ve chosen, Haydn’s ‘Cello Concerto in D Major,’ this is a pretty traditional piece of music and true capital city classical music.

“As a lover of classical music, I, along with many in our audience, am really

looking forward to seeing what the two of them bring out each other and out of the orchestra for this long-awaited solo appearance with LACO.”

It’s an appearance that Cadwallader described as years in the making, as Kanneh-Mason’s 2018 LACO debut was postponed after he was invited to perform Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding the same weekend. The performance was rescheduled for the end of the orchestra’s 2019/20 season, which was canceled due to COVID-19.

A graduate of London’s Royal Academy of Music, Kanneh-Mason is now a Decca Classics recording artist and was appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2020 New Year’s Honours List. He also became the first cellist to reach the UK Top 10 after his 2020 album “Elgar” hit No. 8 in the main UK Official Album Chart. He plays a Matteo Goffriller cello from 1700 which is on indefinite loan to him.

“It’s a really wonderful program that has been put together and we’re thrilled to be presenting at the Alex Theatre,” Cadwallader said. “Being together, experiencing live music, experiencing beauty together, that’s a singular kind of shared human experience, and we have a lot of folks who are really hungry to get back together and experience that together. Our responsibility, of course, is to do that in the safest way possible, and so we strongly encourage mask wearing, but we don’t require it.

“One of the great things about the Alex, they have that outdoor food court area and during intermission it’s so nice to see people socializing together in a group outdoors … talking about the concert, having a glass of wine, maybe some snacks.

“That is really one of my favorite things about the arts: it’s experiencing the art itself, but it’s also having the opportunity to connect with other people around where they have this shared interest around the art. … Getting to do that at the Alex, it’s a perfect place for it and we really do strike a great balance between making sure it’s a safe environment where people feel comfortable and also allowing space for that singular, social connection that only the arts can provide.”

Fan Halen feels no pressure returning to Pasadena

Fan Halen isn’t nervous about playing The Mixx in Pasadena, the hometown of its namesake, Van Halen.

Several years ago, Fan Halen played at a Pasadena bar for Greg Renoff, who penned the book “Van Halen Rising.” A who’s who of Van Halen fans, friends and family filled the venue.

“All the people in and around the band back then participated in the book and they were there,” said Fan Halen guitarist Derek Fuller. “The pressure, as you can imagine, was intense. We were a little concerned. But people came up to us and said, ‘We just went back in time.’ It was really, really special.

“From that standpoint, the pressure is a little bit off. We’ve performed in front of the most critical people.”

Fan Halen headlines The Mixx on Saturday, Jan. 14, to celebrate the music of the “Hot for Teacher” band. Making a special appearance at the show is Steve Rosen, author of “Tonechaster — Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen.”

Rosen will sign copies of his $35 book before Fan Halen hits the stage.

“We love the music,” Fuller said of Van Halen. “We’re fans just like everybody else. We celebrate that music and that era when they ruled rock ‘n’ roll.”

Based in Huntington Beach, Fan Halen was founded more than 10 years ago and has since played around the world, including Japan, South and Central America, Canada and Mexico.

Fan Halen focuses on Van Halen’s first six albums, from 1970 to 1984 — not “Van Hagar,” when Sammy Hagar replaced original singer David Lee Roth.

The band features vocalist Ernie Berru, who uncannily resembles Roth. Fuller recreates Eddie’s riffs and enthusiastic live persona.

Bassist Andy Catts is a doppelganger for Michael Anthony — in terms of

looks, musicianship and vocals. Alex Van Halen’s drumming comes courtesy of Michael Thompson, who brings a 1981 18-piece double-barreled bass drum Ludwig kit.

Bringing the sound

As a teenage guitar player in Hacienda Heights, Fuller started following Aerosmith and Ted Nugent —until Van Halen came on the scene.

“Hundreds of millions of other guitar players and I gravitated toward them,” Fuller recalled. “It was so different and so impactful. It was an easy choice for me. There’s only one choice for me: It was Van Halen.

“If you’re a tribute band and you have a passion for that music, it transcends into your show. We lived it, breathed it. It’s what we love.”

Fuller said Fan Halen worked for about three years to perfect its live show.

“The biggest compliment is someone who said, ‘That just took me back to 1979, the Forum, when I was in high school. I brought a date. That show changed my life and your show brought me right back.’

“When we’d see rock shows like Aerosmith and Kiss, it was just four dudes kind of rocking out. Nothing was wrong with that. When Van Halen came out, it was like a party. David Lee Roth was this ringmaster doing the splits off the riser and Eddie playing guitar, jumping around like crazy, too. It was just a party, and you couldn’t help but feel so elated. We bring it, too.”

The Nextdoors find humor in social media

Social media produces some of the best laughs. Pasadena’s Mika Larson and Russell Mark were so inspired by nextdoor.com’s most eye-rolling, melodramatic posts that they formed a duo around it.

“When we used to live in Silver Lake, we would see headlines that came up that were so absurd,” Larson said.

“We decided we should form a band called The Nextdoors and write songs based on the crazy stuff on that site. But we moved out of Silverlake and into Pasadena, where the headlines are more mundane, and the idea fizzled out.”

That changed when The Nextdoors began recording an album during the COVID-19 pandemic — but not based on their original concept. Larson and Mark started writing more straightforward, cello-focused, Americana-style original tracks, which spawned “Linda Vista,” their debut album.

“Our debut collection of songs is named after Russell’s sister, Linda Wiener, who we lost to cancer in 2020,” Larson said.

“She was one of our biggest supporters and, in fact, she drew the flowers and bugs on our album art and website. A portion of the sales goes toward Bat Conservation International, a cause dear to her.”

Hailing from Tucson, Mark said his sister’s favorite song would have been “Honest Mechanic Gone Bad”—the only song on the album that does in fact represent their original concept.

“It’s based on a Pasadena nextdoor.com post lamenting — in a very dramatic fashion — how their wonderful mechanic has gone bad,” Mark said with a laugh.

The Nextdoors are teaming up with Wild Parrot Brewing Company to present Neighbor Day on Sunday, Jan. 15. The family-friendly event features performances by The Nextdoors and special guest Dry September.

“Over the course of the last couple of years, the public house, the dive bar, the neighborhood meeting spot, those were mostly shut down after COVID,” he said.

“Breweries have really kind of taken over as that neighborhood meeting place. As soon as Wild Parrot opened, we went in there, had a beer and chatted with them about playing there.”

The set will feature their quirky and serious songs.

“The conventional wisdom is don’t do two different things because it confuses people,” he said.

“We already have. We had an album of mostly straightforward material. Now we want to have some fun with the original idea.”

A Minnesota native, Larson said the couple has been playing since they met in Silver Lake. They even played on stage together at their wedding in Arcadia.

Music is Mark’s full-time job, as he works as a musician, producer and engineer out of his home studio. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he recorded musicians in his backyard gazebo-turned-sound booth.

“A few peacocks made it into some people’s recordings,” he said with a laugh.”

He also runs music programs at summer camps in Wisconsin and Illinois, which requires him to travel a good portion of the summer. Meanwhile, Larson owns a company that sells humorous T-shirts online. A Manhattan School of Music graduate, she is a classically trained cellist who crosses over into the pop/rock world, having played on songs by the likes of David Pack and Alan Parsons.

“There’s never a dull moment,” she said with a laugh.

NOTICE OF PETITION

TO ADMINISTER

ESTATE OF DIANA FOGLER

Case No. 22STPB12543

To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent

creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of DIANA FOGLER

A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by Walt Fogler-Mancini aka Walter J. Fogler-Mancini in the Superior Court of California, County of LOS ANGELES.

THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that Walt Fogler-Mancini aka Walter J. Fogler-Mancini be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent.

THE PETITION requests the decedent's will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court.

THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority.

A HEARING on the petition will be held on January 27, 2023 at 8:30 AM in Dept. No. 44 located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.

IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney.

IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code.

Other California statutes and legal authority may

affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law.

YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk.

To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both of JENNIFER ANN SYLVESTRE, JENNA SYLVESTRE, JENNIFER SMITH

A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by CASANDRA CRAGNOTTI in the Superior Court of California, County of LOS ANGELES.

THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that: CASANDRA CRAGNOTTI be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent.

THE PETITION requests the decedent's will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are

available for examination in the file kept by the court.

A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: Date: January 25, 2023, Time: 8:30 AM, Dept.: 29 Room: 240, Location: 111 North Hill Street Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor.

A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk.

other common designation, if any, of the real property is purported to be: 2473 Oswego St., Unit 17, Pasadena, CA 91107, APN 5747-002090. The undersigned trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of this Notice of Sale is: $19,285.42. The opening bid at the foreclosure sale may be more or less than this estimate. In addition to cash, trustee will accept a cashier's check drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn on a state or federal credit union or a check drawn on a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the California Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. If tender other than cash is accepted, the trustee may withhold issuance of the Trustee's Deed Upon Sale until funds become available to the payee or endorsee as a matter of right. In its sole discretion, the seller (foreclosing party) reserves the right to withdraw the property from sale after the opening credit bid is announced but before the sale is completed. The opening bid is placed on behalf of the seller. Said sale shall be made, but without covenant or warranty, express or implied regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to satisfy the indebtedness secured by said Lien, advances thereunder, with interest as provided in the Declaration or by law plus the fees, charges and expenses of the trustee. THIS PROPERTY IS BEING SOLD IN AN "AS-IS" CONDITION. If you have previously received a discharge in bankruptcy, you may have been released from personal liability for this debt in which case this notice is intended to exercise the secured party's rights against the real property only. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Plac-

ing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER AND ALL OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.

The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether this sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-9390772 or visit this internet website www.nationwid eposting.com using the file number assigned to this case: W22-01055.

Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an "eligible tenant buyer," you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an "eligible bidder," you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction.

There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 916-939-0772, or visit this internet website www.nationwid eposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case W22-01055 to find the date on which the trustee's sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee's sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee's sale. If you think you may qualify as an "eligible tenant buyer" or "eligible bidder," you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained herein, the sale shall be subject to the following as provided in California Civil Code Section 5715: "A non judicial foreclosure sale by an association to collect upon a debt for delinquent assessments shall be subject to a right of redemption. The redemption period within which the separate interest may be redeemed from a foreclosure sale under this paragraph ends 90 days after the sale." NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site WWW. AUCTION.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 106560-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NO-

TICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section

2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreco ncorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 106560-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the

address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale.

If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. FOR
