Please don’t ask me to ‘smile’
N
ow that we vaccinated people can once again be outside and “maskless” — at least in certain circumstances — I now realize that there was a definite perk to wearing a mask. Why? Because no one could see my facial expressions, (note to self: don’t wear a clear face shield to the grocery store again) and that finally meant no one — usually men — could tell me to smile. I would like to do my part in wiping out this most obnoxious behavior, and it’s a good bet I speak for a lot of you. I am talking about nipping those folks in the bud who feel obliged to tell complete strangers to smile. It usually happens to me in grocery stores. During COVID-19 times, I blissfully haven’t been told to smile once — until I wore that clear shield. Then, like magic, there he was in the produce section, reminding me. I have occasionally received “smile!” orders in a parking lot, usually outside a grocery store. I’ll just be pushing my cart along, minding my own business (or fearing for my life, depending on the neighborhood) when some glee-monger pops out with “Smile! You look so serious!” or “Smile! It can’t be that bad!” Well, guess what? I am serious now, and maybe it is that bad, you nincompoops. Basically, my face is no one else’s business. Now, I suspect these self-appointed “smile police” only pick on people who are already quite pleasant looking, or perhaps, just shorter than they are. I can’t imagine that a 300-pound linebacker gets too many directives to smile but of course, I don’t see any 300-pound linebackers grocery shopping. I wish I could run a survey on a lot of things. I want facts; I want numbers to back up my opinions. In the meantime, I’ll rely on guessing. I’d wager that a survey would tell me more women than men get told to smile by strangers. I’d wager that both women and men tell women to smile. Smile patrols know in their tummies that a man may punch them, and rightfully so, for messing with his expression. Women are less apt to strike for any reason. Plus, they’ve been told that their job is to be pretty; a smile, even a forced one, is better than the truth. We have all been trained to be uncomfortable with a female frown, which might mean she’s (gasp!) thinking. When a woman is openly thinking about more than her appearance, she just might figure out a lot of things that make her mad. Then she’ll talk to other women who might get angry, and then… oh my gosh, it just might get out of
hand, and then where will we be? Shamelessly frowning in grocery stores, that’s where. Listen, you folks who tell us hapless shorter people to smile, what’s your problem? I go to a grocery store to buy food, not to smile. You’ve been watching too many commercials. If you must see smiles in the grocery store, go over to the breakfast cereal section and look at Quaker Oats cartons or something. Don’t bother me. When I go grocery shopping, I typically think about prices or try to stretch my food budget, or plan meals. Maybe I’m just hungry. I am not there as a decoration for twerps who cannot face reality. I may be a piece of work, but I am not a piece of art. I am, along with other healthy shoppers who get hit with “smile” being emotionally appropriate to the task. I have never wondered about Mona Lisa’s enigmatic expression. She’s simply gritting her teeth as a result of the gazillionth request to smile. She didn’t feel like it, OK? I understand, Mona. Think about it. Why are these smiley busybodies asking others to smile and also smiling themselves? Are they insane? Do they have gas? Maybe they’re not thinking about skyrocketing grocery prices because they are shoplifting. I am not a relentlessly crabby person, but I guarantee that I do not smile at broccoli or nonfat yogurt. I certainly do not smile at people who ask me to for no reason. I do love to smile when I am happy. I frequently give unsolicited smiles to almost anyone in the vicinity. A smile is a gift, not an obligation. I smile at my husband and my dogs. I smile in the mirror to see if I have spinach in my teeth. So, unless you are Leonardo da Vinci, if you tell me to smile in a grocery store again, I will either make a citizen’s arrest or loudly say, “Kiss my…!” and I don’t mean my instant grits. Perhaps I’ll have a copy of this commentary to give you so I can have something to authentically smile at as I stand there and watch you read it. Or I may just have to get a knuckle sandwich out of the deli case if you catch my drift. Consider yourself warned. There, that ought to cramp someone’s “smile!” Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! Crump and Floyd family gather at McClain press conference By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor
L
ast Monday, the families of Anthony McClain and George Floyd, joined by their attorney Ben Crump, gathered on the steps of city hall and demanded justice for McClain. “It’s not enough just to say justice for George Floyd,” said Crump, who also handled the cases of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor. “We also have to say justice for Anthony McClain.” Crump and many others who spoke at the “Justice for Anthony McClain” rally called for the firing, arrest and conviction of the police officers involved in his death. Those who gathered and supported the event were a vast mixture of people such as nonprofits like Black Lives Matter and My Tribe Rise to funk music icon George Clinton. “[McClain] didn’t pass of natural cause. He was killed by a police officer that should be locked up” said Philonise Floyd, brother of George Floyd said, whose death sparked an international uprising against police brutality. McClain was shot and killed by Pasadena police officer Edwin Dumaguindin after fleeing from a routine traffic stop last August. Dumaguindin shot McClain in the back after he believed he saw a gun. Police back the officer’s claim after releasing an edited and narrated video which authorities claim shows McClain with a handgun in his waistband and later in his left hand. Police believe that he threw the gun across the street as he ran away. The McClain family and their attorneys dispute that claim, saying that he was holding his belt buckle. Caree Harper, one of the attorneys also said that McClain was Facetiming his daughter 25 minutes before the fatal traffic stop. McClain is one of the latest cases of Black people being shot in the back by police. In
SUMMER CONCERT SERIES
2015, Walter Scott was shot in the back five times by a white police officer after being pulled over for a defective light. More recently, nearly a week after McClain’s death, Jacob Blake Jr. was left partly paralyzed after police shot him in the back seven times. “It’s inexplicable why the police keep shooting Black men in the back,” said Crump. “You hardly ever hear about them shooting a white man in the back, but in America, it seems like it’s a cliche of them shooting Black men in the back.” “This story, this type of situation is so tiring,” Rodney Floyd, brother of George Floyd said as his brother Philonise hugged one of McClain’s grieving family members. “We came out for moral support for the family. We know how they feel. We’ve been down this road.” Philonise said that the video of McClain’s shooting mirrored the death of his brother. “Anthony McClain has the same video,” said Philonise. “The man ran out of his shoes and was shot in the back...This man was killed, handcuffed in the prone position and my brother died in the prone position.” The City Council was slated to meet following the rally, however, the meeting was canceled in the morning before the rally. “Out of an abundance of caution, as we have in the past due to an expected demonstration in front of city hall, Monday’s meeting has been canceled,” said city spokesperson Lisa Derderian to Pasadena Now. The attorneys for McClain vowed to return to City Hall and continue to rally for justice. “We [will] keep coming back until they fire the officers that killed Anthony McClain,” said Crump.

Parents, alumni, teachers give back to graduating seniors
A
fter seeing her youngest daughter, Simone, miss out on most of her senior year, Stephanie Bower knew she had to do something to help her. “When you’re depressed you can’t take action to do things that will help you feel less depressed because you can’t imagine that anything’s going to feel different,” said Bower. “I started seeing her slip into that a bit. After talking to other parents, Bower vowed to uplift her daughter and other seniors. “It felt like [the seniors] needed an infusion of energy, love and support to have the seniors recognize that they’re valued,” she said. “That they matter and that there’s a community that supports them.” To show support for her daughter and the graduating seniors of Blair High School, Bower and other parents organized a senior send-off. Many parents wanted to celebrate the seniors’ strides after missing out on prom, homecoming and sports. “It seemed to us that the seniors had reached a point where they were so demoralized that the energy for planning or even being able to imagine that things were going to get better dissipated,” Bower said. “We felt as parents, we needed to pick up some of that energy.” The community came together to show their appreciation for the Blair seniors. With help from over 70 alumni and supporters, volunteers bought gifts for the 114 seniors. “It’s a small thing that we could do for someone that’s going to be running this country,” said Eva Rodriguez, a Blair alumna. “Even though I don’t know you, I still love you. I don’t have to know who you are, to me you’re important and you are valued.
Blair High School seniors received gift baskets to raise spirits after Alumni and supporters “adopted” one or more seniors and created either a gift basket or bag filled with mementos, gift cards and items from their colleges. “It was tremendously heartwarming to see the support for the students and the school as well,” said Bower. Bower hopes that at least one senior comes away with a smile. Faculty and staff delivered the gifts to the over 100 seniors May 14. Some of the seniors were from Blair’s International Academy, a specialized program for students who are new immigrants to the United States. “It’s not easy for them to reach this,” said teacher Liliana Tang. “There are kids who are coming into the country, and they don’t speak English at all. Being able to graduate within those four years, is amazing.” According to the teachers, many of the students had to travel weeks to months at a time in constant danger from cartels and the elements. “That’s why we try to do as much as we can to make sure that they’re supported,” said teacher Theresa Garcia. “We appreciate what they’ve done because it’s not easy.” Because the giveaway was a surprise, many of the students were filled with joy and gratitude after seeing their teachers with gifts. “[I am] thankful for all the support that the teachers have offered me,” Melissa Garcia, a senior from the International Academy said as she smiled. Garcia and other seniors graduate June 4 at the Rose Bowl.

Scholarship created in honor of Anthony McClain By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor

Bellew and the killings of Kendrec McDade and McClain. McClain, a Black man, was shot in the back by a PPD officer after fleeing a routine traffic stop last year. Authorities claimed that he was armed and found a gun on the scene. McClain’s lawyer, Ben Crump and the filmmakers dispute that claim. McClain’s death sparked outrage in the community, with many calling for police reform. Soon after his death, the Pasadena City Council created the police oversight commission. The city council appointed its first members last month. The filmmakers hoped to take the tragic situation and turn it into something that would affect the community positively. The deadline for the application is May 28. All information should be submitted to dennis@pasadenablackpages.com. The winner will be announced on June 8. With the help of the theater Boston Court, the filmmakers are hosting a virtual screening of their film on Saturday, May 22 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $9.99 and available on Eventbrite. All proceeds will go to the scholarship fund.

he creators of the documentary “Thorns on the Rose” established a scholarship in honor of Anthony McClain. “We thought about high school seniors and the challenges they had,” said producer James Farr. “We made the decision to go through with a scholarship.” With the blessing of McClain’s family, Farr and director Dennis Haywood began the Anthony McClain social justice scholarship. The scholarship will go to a Black graduating senior from any public high school in the Pasadena Unified School District. “Students who are attending one of Pasadena’s many private schools may potentially have access to resources that students from a public high school may not have,” Farr said. “Students from a public high school may be from a different social and economical background and we thought we could bridge [the gap] of the equity and access to resources.” While Farr himself did not graduate from college, he hopes that this scholarship will allow at least one student to earn their degree. “Our desire was to make the biggest impact with one student,” Farr said. “The thought is if you can reduce that debt, that burden, it is an advantage. The motivation is to help someone else. I wish these types of opportunities were available to me.” Currently, the filmmakers have raised $7,000 from donations from the community and revenue from the film. They hope to raise more than $10,000 before announcing the winner. “That’s one year less of loans, one year less of debt and that gives them an opportunity when they graduate to start a little bit further ahead,” Farr said. Applicants must submit their last report card and an essay on Farr and Haywood’s film. Students must also list their extracurriculars as well as their plans after high school. “Thorns on the Rose: Black Abuse, Corruption and the Pasadena Police” depicts decades of abuse by the Pasadena Police Department. The film uses footage from cellphones and police body cameras to show the beating of Christopher

lla Lesnever has been a swimmer since she was seven. The Blair Middle School student wants to continue doing so when she enters Blair High School. But one thing may prevent her from having the full experience: the high school’s lack of a timer. The teen is hosting a fundraiser for a new swim timing system for the pool. The Grocery Outlet in Altadena will donate a portion of the proceeds from its Food Truck Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 21, to Lesnever’s cause. She will be on hand to discuss her project, for which she hopes to raise $17,000. The Pasadena Educational Foundation is managing the donation webpage and earmarking the collected funds until Lesnever and her family can place the order. All donations are tax-deductible. “I am excited to connect with my community to help make my goal a reality,” she said. “I understand the timing system is expensive, so I am also seeking to make connections with local businesses and companies to ask for their support for Blair aquatics. The donation website is bit.ly/blairtiming, where you can also find a video that I created that explains my project in detail.” Lesnever wants to help herself and her future teammates fully enjoy their swimming career at Blair. “I look forward to swimming as a Blair Viking starting next year at the high
school,” she said. “I was sad to learn the Blair High School swim team has needed to travel for all their competitions for many years due to the lack of necessary equipment at their pool, so I decided to help. “It’s exciting that Blair recently received a grant from the Tournament of Roses to purchase starting blocks for the pool, but the Blair swimmers still need a timing system to hold accurate home swim meets.” Lesnever said swimming offers many health and social benefits to the students. The Blair swimmers would take great pride in being able to compete at their own school with a home crowd of friends, teachers and family cheering on. In addition to swimming, Lesnever is a Girl Scout, which taught her if there is a problem she cares about, she should partner with her community and take action to address it. “I researched the timing systems available, and then reached out to multiple companies that supply swimming equipment for information and quotes,” she added. “I consulted with the Blair High School Principal David Ibarra, swim coach Daniela Nava, and Phyllis Fash from the Pasadena Educational Foundation to discuss my findings and pick the most appropriate system for our school, and we found the one we’re hopefully going to purchase.” To help Lesnever, email her at ellalesnever@gmail.com.

There’s money buried in your backyard. And you don’t need a shovel to find it. Learn how home equity can help you fund a better retirement. It’s a well-known fact that for many older Americans, the home is their single biggest asset, often accounting for more than 45% of their total net worth. And with interest rates near all-time lows while home values are still high, this combination creates the perfect dynamic for getting the most out of your built-up equity. But, many aren’t taking advantage of this unprecedented period. According to new statistics from the mortgage industry, senior homeowners in the U.S. are now sitting on more than 8.05 trillion dollars* of unused home equity.
It’s a fact: no monthly mortgage payments are required with a government-insured HECM loan; however the borrowers are still responsible for paying for the maintenance of their home, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and, if required, their HOA fees. Today, HECM loans are simply an effective way for homeowners 62 and older to get the extra cash they need to enjoy retirement. Although today’s HECM loans have been improved to provide even greater financial protection for homeowners, there are still many misconceptions.

All things considered, it’s not surprising that more than a million homeowners have already used a government-insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) loan to turn their home equity into extra cash for retirement.
For example, a lot of people mistakenly believe the home must be paid off in full in order to qualify for a HECM loan, which is not the case. In fact, one key advantage of a HECM is that the proceeds will first be used to pay off any existing liens on the property, which frees up cash flow, a huge blessing for seniors living on a fixed income. Unfortunately, many senior homeowners who might be better off with a HECM loan don’t even bother to get more information because of rumors they’ve heard.

Reverse mortgage loan terms include occupying the home as your primary residence, maintaining the home, paying property taxes and homeowners insurance. Although these costs may be substantial, AAG does not establish an escrow account for these payments. However, a set-aside account can be set up for taxes and insurance, and in some cases may be required. Not all interest on a reverse mortgage is tax-deductible and to the extent that it is, such deduction is not available until the loan is partially or fully repaid. AAG charges an origination fee, mortgage insurance premium (where required by HUD), closing costs and servicing fees, rolled into the balance of the loan. AAG charges interest on the balance, which grows over time. When the last borrower or eligible non-borrowing spouse dies, sells the home, permanently moves out, or fails to comply with the loan terms, the loan becomes due and payable (and the property may become subject to foreclosure). When this happens, some or all of the equity in the property no longer belongs to the borrowers, who may need to sell the home or otherwise repay the loan balance. Phoenix Musical Instrument Museum
Ontario International Airport
Adventures await via Ontario International Airport By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Editor
S
ummer fun needn’t stop at the California state lines. Ontario International Airport Southern California offers daily flights to a host of fun spots, including Phoenix, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Dallas-Fort Worth, Las Vegas and Honolulu. With seven daily flights, Phoenix is a quick jump from the airport. Fans can hang out at Chase Field when the Dodgers take on the Diamondbacks; hike Camelback Mountain (with plenty of water and early in the morning, naturally); imbibe in wine around Scottsdale or take a day trip to the red rocks of Sedona with the Pink Jeep Tours. There are a few secret spots, as well, like the restaurant Durant’s (probably the best steakhouse ever); the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park is a treat for the mind and body with an Aveda Spa and tremendous golfing; the Desert Botanical Garden; the Queen Creek Olive Mill and Salt River Tubing. Dare we say more? Sure, why not. The Musical Instrument Museum, or if you’re cool, “The MIM,” should be atop everyone’s list. Developed by Target’s then-CEO Bob Ulrich, the Musical Instrument Museum has a performance hall with perfect sound, instruments from a wealth of countries by continent, and a few laughs. Check out the air guitar contest attraction. Seattle is also seven daily flights from Ontario. The gorgeous Pacific Northwest region offers seafood cuisine, culture (more than grunge) and, of course, coffee. With just a snap of the fingers, travelers can head to the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, Puget Sound, Chihuly Garden or Pioneer Square, some of just a few of the must-see stops in Seattle. Ontario International Airport recently saw welcoming news regarding Hawaii. In April, Hawaii Gov. David Y. Ige said travelers from Ontario International Airport could bypass the Aloha state’s mandatory 10-day quarantine with a negative COVID-19 test performed by a “trusting” testing partner. Ontario was the first airport in Southern California to earn the designation from that state’s department of health. Travelers can choose from two options — an expedited PCR test with next-day results or a rapid molecular NAAT test that provides results within an hour. The tests must be administered within 72 hours of departure from Ontario. Ontario’s local testing partner is the COVID-19 Clinic that offers drive-thru testing on parking lot 3 daily from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The ONT site, open since November, offers tests by appointment and on a drive-up basis.
Recently, Hawaiian Airlines began nonstop service from Ontario to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (NHL) five times a week. The majestic beauty of Salt Lake City is attainable through Ontario airport via five daily flights. According to Visit Salt Lake, the city’s highlights go beyond bar hopping, which is nonetheless fun. In 2002, Salt Lake hosted the Olympic Winter Games and sports fans can tour the attractions and facilities related to it. It’s only a 20-minute drive from SLC proper, Utah Olympic Park features training facilities for moguls and freestyle aerials, as well as a terrain park and boarder-cross course where visitors can watch everyone from young kids to next-generation Olympic athletes hone their skills. Beyond that, check out the primo movie theaters, historic sites and, of course, the Great Salt Lake. Dallas-Fort Worth is, well, worthy of a trip. With five daily flights, Dallas-Fort Worth is full of fun. According to Visit Fort Worth, travelers can see priceless masterpieces in the world-renowned Cultural District; Western heritage in the Stockyards National Historic District; shopping and dining in the 35-block Sundance Square; chow down on barbecue and Tex-Mex; and check out more than 7,000 animals at the top-ranked Fort Worth Zoo. Dallas is filled with hidden gems as well. The Design District will make anyone want to be fashionable. Visit Dallas is here to help. The center can provide itineraries for family vacations, budget travelers and freebies. Then there’s America’s Team. Cheer on the Dallas Cowboys with special game packages. Las Vegas isn’t last on anyone’s list, but here we go. The lights of Sin City have turned back on. Entertainers like the talented Usher, alt-rock legend Morrissey, the upbeat-yet-seductive Bruno Mars and the delightful Katy Perry are among those who have scheduled residencies. Last week, Debbie Gibson and Joey McIntyre booked gigs at the Venetian Resort Las Vegas for a limited run late this summer. And restaurants go beyond buffets. World-class eateries took a gamble on Vegas, turning it into a foodie town. So, pack your bags, head to Ontario International Airport Southern California and depart on a safe adventure.

FilmWeek & Chill: “Airplane!” Virtual Event Despite restrictions, FilmWeek with KPCC continues. On June 3, FilmWeek’s cinematic comedy masterpiece of choice is the 1980 parody film “Airplane!” Like a virtual book club, Larry Mantle invites guests to watch “Airplane!,” then join him and a panel including co-directors of the film and film critics for a discussion. With pay-what-youwant tickets, a panel of qualified guests, and a hilarious film to pick apart, there is no reason not to join fellow KPCC listeners in a discussion of one of the 1980s’ funniest movies. Info: https://bit.ly/3hxB7Ll The Bunny Museum 2605 Lake Avenue Since 1998, one of Altadena’s best and strangest museums has been showing guests the beautiful and off-putting beauty of bunnies. This wonderful little museum has more than 40,000 bunny objects, and all of them are on display. The mission statement of the Bunny Museum can be found on its website, “Bunnies aren’t just special for Easter. Bunnies are a part of our everyday lives from literature to film to advertising to slang.” Along with the floor-to-ceiling presentation of the bunny items, there are items for sale in the Hop and Stop gift shop, and for intrepid explorers 13 or older, the Chamber of Hop Horrors awaits, a walk through exhibition of the abuse bunnies have experienced throughout time. Open for business at 50% capacity, The Bunny Museum offers an interesting and unique experience for museumgoers looking for an unorthodox but fascinating experience. Tickets are available at the door, with adult tickets being $12, seniors and military being $10, children five and older being $8, and children younger than five are free. Pacific Asia Museum 46 N. Robles Avenue For most of the quarantine, the Pacific Asia Museum had its doors closed. However, to celebrate its 50th anniversary, its doors are bursting open with a summer full of new exhibitions. Along with its vast art collection, the museum is housing new exhibitions. First, Nick Dong presents a sorrowful tribute to the lives lost to COVID-19 and the increased hatred toward Asian-Americans during the pandemic. Through the medium of Buddhist traditions, Dong presents to museumgoers “Divine Immersion,” a collection of art meant to heal after such a long and difficult year. Then, diving further back into the annals of Asian history, the museum presents “Crossroads: Exploring the Silk Road,” an exhibit focusing on the legendary trade route and in particular, Dunhuang, an important point of cultural diffusion between hundreds of traditions. Beginning May 29, art lovers can once again return to one of the most dazzling museums in the city. Tickets can be purchased at uscpanticketing.as.me/schedule/php The Norton Simon Museum 411 W. Colorado Boulevard Like the Pacific Asia Museum, The Norton Simon is finally opening its doors after a long period of quarantine. The Norton Simon is one for those who appreciate fine art, and with two year-long exhibitions, there is a lot happening with the newly reopened museum. In the museum’s collection of impressionist art from the 19th century, a new piece is on loan from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art: Paul Gaugain’s 1888 painting “The Swineherd.” As well as that, an exciting exhibition of abstract photography is available for perusal by museumgoers in “Beyond the World We Know: Abstraction in Photography.” Tickets can be purchased at nortonsimon.org. Kidspace Children’s Museum 480 N. Arroyo Boulevard The Kidspace Children’s Museum is a family-friendly museum experience that aims to engage Pasadena’s kids in fun creative activities. It is truly a perfect time for the Kidspace Children’s Museum to reopen—just in time for butterfly season. Every summer for the past 25 years, the museum has opened a 3.5-acre outdoor campus to the public. From trike courses to caterpillar hunts, Butterfly Season is a fun time for any curious kid. The museum offers hours of entertainment, from crawling around in a giant hawk’s nest to rockets and giant levers. For tickets, visit kidspacemuseum.org. 18 PASADENA WEEKLY | 05.20.21

ld Pasadena is open. For those who haven’t visited in a while, there are many new options for outdoor dining, including street, sidewalk and even the commUNITY Dining area on Big Bang Theory Way. Old Pasadena has provided picnic tables for guests to eat under the umbrellas during the day or enjoy the café-lighting in the evening. Diners will be surprised by the new restaurants that have opened recently. Old Pasadena is a truly culinary destination offering a range of experiences from fast-casual to chef-driven, and from international cuisine to local favorites. One Colorado’s Food District added Naughty Vegan Panda and Tacos 1986 to its Union Street row of grab-and-go options. Critically acclaimed Union Restaurant recently expanded with U Street Pizza next door, offering authentic New York pies. Upscale Japanese kitchen Kaviar Sushi Bar joined the Raymond Avenue restaurant row. Nearby, Bodegon No. 69 opened with an authentic Peruvian menu, and Chakra Indian Kitchen reviewers rave about its genuine flavors. Check out Delight Pastry for European-style desserts and baked goods. With its health-conscious menu of delicious bowls and juices, Brazilian Acai Bowls & Juice Bar rounds things out on Holly Street. Most recently, Jake’s Trustworthy Burgers & Beer returns to the iconic location on Colorado Boulevard, where, in 1947, Jake’s appeared serving its classic double-patty Angus burger. The new menu includes the classic burger as well as Trustworthy craft beer on tap. Also on Colorado Boulevard, Noodle St. brings its traditional Chinese noodles, all hand-pulled in varying shapes and textures for a variety of dishes. Coming later this summer, the much-anticipated Agnes Restaurant & Cheesery will open on Green Street. The lovingly designed space includes a fine cheese store, as well as a market café featuring wood-fired hearth cooking and an open kitchen. A large patio dappled in greenery is the perfect spot for Sunday brunch. Old Pasadena is home to more than 100 restaurants, and we are so pleased to welcome these new additions to the roster. Personal trainers at The Exercise Coach help customers navigate their workouts with the AI-enabled machines.

The Exercise Coach expands to San Marino
T
he Exercise Coach, a national fitness chain that combines AI-driven equipment and personal training, opened its first franchise in San Marino May 5. The location brings the brand’s signature 20-minute workouts to the area as part of the brand’s push to enter the West Coast market. The Exercise Coach’s workout regimen aims to provide a more efficient and personalized workout than traditional gyms. When customers make their first appointment, they are taken around the studio to perform a series of benchmark tests on computerized workout machines. These machines register a user’s baseline. According to Peter Young, owner of the San Marino franchise, the equipment processes the client’s data and establishes a profile for the user. After finding an optimal resistance, users then build their strength while not overextending their muscles or range of motion. Alongside visual feedback on the machine’s screens, this means during biweekly 20-minute workout sessions, customers can be confident they won’t injure themselves or find their fitness progress stagnating. “It’s very straightforward,” Young said. “If you think about it, it’s simple, but it’s tremendously powerful. It combines all the latest high-tech features with some artificial intelligence. Some people are overwhelmed or intimidated by the equipment in a regular gym. Here, people just need to come and give their best effort.” A personal trainer guides customers through the session. These trainers can make further adjustments based on users’ individual concerns, be it previous injuries, new goals or general preferences. The trainers provide a personal touch in a studio full of large, austere screen-laden machines. “The progression becomes much more linear and consistent rather than you not

Even with the distance necessary for the one-on-one training, The Exercise Coach’s new San Marino location took extra precautions to ensure COVID-19 safety, like a newly outfitted HVAC system.
knowing,” Young said. “With the screens and getting that instantaneous feedback, it’s motivating. People like to know where they are. They can make adjustments based on the targets that are set for them so they can get the maximum results. That adds to the whole efficiency profile.” Efficiency is the name of the game, especially as the Exercise Coach enters an extremely competitive LA market. Young hopes the combination of personal attention and new technology will help his franchise stand out against competitors like Orangetheory Fitness. He remains confident about the brand’s California expansion and plans to open other franchises, with concrete plans for at least one more in Studio City. “I’m very impressed with the franchisor,” Young said. “They are very thorough. They are very deliberate. They are building to scale before they start to scale. In order to be successful, that’s really important.” Young, who has spent years in the business world, most recently sold a manufacturing company he worked with for 17 years. He took it from local to national. “I decided I wanted to continue to do something,” said Young about his new fitness venture. “I wanted to do something where I could have a positive effect on people and make a difference in people’s lives.” Thinking about making a difference in the surrounding community, Young also stressed the new location’s COVID-19 safety precautions — even as LA moves closer to an end on its pandemic restrictions. He stressed the studio’s high ceilings, space for distancing and renovated HVAC system, replete with brand new filtration. The measures are meant to give people confidence as they emerge from pandemic isolation, given many haven’t worked out in a public setting for over a year. That confidence may be especially important to The Exercise Coach’s older demographic, which generally services 40- to 80-year-old professionals. But the studio’s conscious efforts and the limited number of customers in the same place at the same time made Young’s COVID-19-proofing job a matter of principle as much as precaution. “I made a number of decisions when I was looking at real estate. I wanted to have enough space and enough volume where there was no sense of close or closeness,” Young said. “The important thing is, we’re in compliance with all the LA County requirements. I’ve invested in completely redoing the ventilation systems. The timing [of the opening] happened to fit very nicely with the twilight of the pandemic.” With safety measures in place and restrictions laxed, Young hopes to introduce the Pasadena-area to this new form of personalized, machine-driven workouts. To do so, the studio is running a promotion now through June 19 for two complimentary, obligation-free promotional sessions to give interested customers a chance to get a feel for The Exercise Coach’s alternative workout program. “All we ask is that you show up with a little bit of curiosity and a desire to improve your fitness,” Young said.

• ARTS & CULTURE • South Pas’ Katopodis hosts the Greek Film Festival A
ristotle Katopodis is passionate about his position as director of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival. Born in Greece and living in South Pasadena, Katopodis is keeping his festival alive by hosting it virtually for the second year. “Even though we are looking forward to returning to the silver screen and our Egyptian Theatre experience, we are taking full advantage of the virtual platform to showcase exciting and curated Greek films,” Katopodis said. “We are proud to exhibit four world premieres, 23 North American premieres, five U.S. premieres, six West Coast premieres, and 12 LA premieres. The breadth and depth of Greek cinema in all film forms is going to be available.” The 15th annual event is showing more than 60 films through May 30. The festival’s virtual edition offers New Greek cinema with curated features, shorts, documentaries and animation films on a secure platform accompanied by a host of webinars and Q & As. “We’re hoping we’re going to be able to come back to our beautiful Egyptian Theatre, but unfortunately, the conditions are still similar to last year. I don’t think we’re ready to return to the theater yet.” Katopodis said his audience is split, as some are ready to experience the silver screen once again. “They do miss a lot of the social action and socializing and meeting friends and getting to know each other,” he added. “We’re known as a ‘filmmaker’s film festival.’ We usually have 50 or so filmmakers supporting their films, but now it’s virtual, via Zoom sessions.” Here is a list of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival movies: “Digger,” by Georgis Grigorakis. A slow-burning contemporary Western about a native farmer who lives and works alone in a farmhouse in the heart of a mountain forest in Northern Greece. “Green Sea,” by Angeliki Antoniou. Anna has lost her memory, but she hasn’t forgotten how to cook. “Pari,” by Siamak Etemadi. Pari, an Iranian mother in her 40s, lands in Athens to visit her son, but quickly discovers he is nowhere to be found. “The Man with the Answers,” by Stelios Kammitsis. Victor is a twenty-something ex-diving champion now working in a furniture factory and living with his sick grandmother in a seaside town in Greece. Distraught after her death, he decides
to dust off her old car and travel to Germany to visit his estranged mother. “Daniel ‘16,” by Dimitris Koutsiabasakos. Daniel, a German teenager, is sent to Greece in a juvenile offender community to serve his sentence. There, in an abandoned village of Evros river area, near the border with Turkey, he experiences unprecedented emotions and must solve difficult dilemmas. “Being Present,” by Yorgos Avgeropoulos. While still healing from the wounds caused by the 10-year economic disaster, Greece must confront the biggest public health crisis of recent history. “The Unknown Athenians,” by Angeliki Antoniou. During six exhausting years of austerity, the documentary follows the daily routine of stray dogs struggling in the center of Athens and the people who take care of them. “Vasy’s Odyssey,” by Vasileios Papatheocharis. Two lives, two different worlds and two unalike places. Vasi and Alexandra, two strangers, travel from Alicante to Greece, through France, Italy and Albania, on a trip where they will learn to face their mistakes and delve into their personal and family relationships. “This is right; Zak Life and After,” by Gevi Dimitrakopoulou. A short narrative documentary about the aftermath of Zak’s murder from her community’s perspective. “Sow the Wind,” by Danilo Caputo. Nica, 21, drops out of her university course in agronomics and returns home to Apulia in southern Italy after three years away. She finds her father deep in debt, a polluted, devastated region, and olive trees destroyed by a parasite. “Stefanos Rokos: Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds’, No More Shall We Part, 14 Paintings 17 Years Later,” by Rinio Dragasaki and Araceli Lemos. A documentation of three years of contemporary Greek painter Stefanos Rokos’ work on the making of his exhibition “Stefanos Rokos: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ No More Shall We Part, 14 paintings 17 years later.” His daily routines, artistic process, spontaneous inspirations, and his creative dialogue with musician Nick Cave. “KALA AZAR,” by Janis Rafa. A young couple’s ritualistic job routine of collecting and cremating animal bodies from their owners and the roadkills that they come across is challenged when they cause an accident themselves. “Sarmako—A Tale of the North,” by Marco Papadopoulos. Thessaloniki, October 1949. The Greek Civil War is supposedly over, but its impact is still felt by the people and a great divide exists between them.

“Persephone,” by Costas Athousakis. A Greek Japanese Cine-Operetta, where the ancient Greek myth of the Abduction of Persephone comes alive before the eyes of a Japanese group, as the arrival of a stranger man forces the family members of the hostel Persephone to identify themselves with the fate of the mythological heroes “Once Upon a River,” by Haroula Rose. It’s 1978 and Margo Crane, a 15-year-old part Native teen, must take to the Stark River on an odyssey. Akin to Huck Finn, this is a heroine like no other. Based on the best-selling novel “Once Upon A River” by Bonnie Jo Campbell. “Heroes of Salonika,” by Tom Barkay. A film that sheds light on the practically unknown destruction that befell Jews in the Greek city of Thessaloniki during the Holocaust. “Seven Minutes of Soul,” by Panos Vlahos. The documentary follows Panos Vlahos’ journey to investigate the conditions under which the first modern Olympic games in Athens (1896) took place and debunk the myth of the very first marathon winner in history. “Kε•ha•’jas – Man of the Land,” by Giorgos Komakis. The documentary was filmed in Lemnos, the most lowland of the Aegean islands. Memories, oblivions, silences and identities help to illuminate the rural, economic and social history of the island. “The Journey of Askavlos,” by Yorgos Arvanitis. The film looks at the instrument’s origins within the concrete jungles of modern towns and cities. The bagpipe is being assimilated by the contemporary music scene and is integrating with modern sounds, beyond the realm of traditional festivals, thereby gaining a younger audience and enjoying great resonance around Greece and worldwide. “Spiros and the Circle of Death,” by Lino Kafidas and Dimitris Kafidas. Spiros is the last remaining motorcycle acrobat performing in the Circle of Death. He lives a nomadic life with his family, his caravan, and a team of riders who often abandon him. “The Unlost Homeland,” by Eftychia Fragou. This documentary follows the story of 12 Greeks from Istanbul who lived through the pogrom of 1955. “Amalgamation,” by Sylvia Nicolaides and Nicolas Iordanou. The film is a soulful portrait of a female choir revisiting traditional songs in a contemporary way, bridging past and present, with a strong voice and a deep sense of community and friendship. “Prespa Lakes Two Drops in a Waterworld,” by Androniki Christaki. The municipality Prespa is geographically located in the northwest of Greece and borders Albania and North Macedonia. “Passage to Europe,” by Dimitra Kouzi. For 30 years now, Fotis Psycharis has been a primary teacher at a state elementary school in the heart of Athens. Reflecting the diversity of the neighborhood population, most of his pupils are refugee and immigrant children from Africa, the former USSR, the Balkans, the Middle East, and Asia, who often regard Greece as an unavoidable but also convenient stop on their journey across Europe. “Markos,” by Nikos Skarentzos. Musicians travel to the Greek island of Syros, the birthplace of legendary folk musician Markos Vamvakaris, where they are invited to perform in an homage to his work. “The Weavers,” by Dimitris Koutsiabasakos. In 1963, IM, a Swedish charity, established in Vlasti, a mountainous village in Greece, a model weaving center. For 25 years this intercultural venture will support the women of the village which was a charismatic place, severely affected by wars, poverty, and abandonment. “Draw with Me,” by Constantine Venetopoulos. The coming out journey of Brendon Scholl, a youth who identifies as trans, and about how their art became their outlet for self-expression, while on the complex journey of having to be yourself in a world that at times struggles with diversity. “My Rembetika Blues,” by Mary Zournazi. The documentary covers the power of music and what makes us human. “2 Miles from Home,” by Julia Speropoulos. This documentary recounts events of the 1914-1923 period in Turkey, and the arrival of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk at Samsun in May 1919, which marked the climax of the genocide that killed more than 353,000 Pontic Greeks of the Black Sea. “Bucket Hat!” by Demetrios Tzamaras. Brothers Tot and Meech try desperately to persuade their jokester grandfather to buy them ice cream while on a trip to the beach. “Lazy Dragon,” by Fokion Xenos and Joan Zhonga. The tale of a Lazy Dragon encountering tiny humans for the first time. “The Parrot Lady,” by Michalis Kalopaidis. Inspired by a true story, the film works as an artistic interpretation of a woman’s life who chose to live on the streets with her parrots, afraid of dying alone in her home. “The Two Singles,” by Marios Ioannidis. Two single characters begin a journey together. “Cast-Outs,” by Alexandros Romanos Lizardos and Akis Melachris. Through faulty handling that leads to the collapse of a penitentiary and mass escapes, newly appointed Jail-R suffers multiple fractures and loses his job. While convalescing, he is hired as a bank security guard. “From Heart to Heart,” by Sofia Kalantzi and Aristarchos Papadaniel. Α story

Art exhibit grows out of local protest work By Bridgette M. Redman Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

or Elana Mann, her artwork and civic duties cannot be separated. Last summer, she co-founded — with Phung Huynh, Will Hoadley-Brill and Stefani Williams — the Anti-Racism Committee (ARC) of South Pasadena. She also continues to make folk instruments of protest, some of which are on display through July 2 at Santa Monica’s 18th Street Arts Center in an exhibition called “A Year of Wonders, Redux.” It features sonic sculptures, a video and works on paper. They have commonalities — they connect people and amplify voices of protest. “My artwork and my community organizing are intrinsically linked,” Mann said. “I can’t separate them. Sometimes they are combined into one project, sometimes they are on parallel tracks.” Mann began creating sono-sculptures in 2014, delving into works related to the time period in which they are made. For this production, Mann focused on politics, the pandemic and passionate social movements. “The body of work that is at 18th Street really comes out of the past year of the rise in protest movements, BLM and getting involved in anti-racism work locally in my hometown of Pasadena,” Mann said. Activism in South Pasadena The grassroots ARC tries to heal the deep wounds of systemic racism in Pasadena. The 70-some members work toward racial justice in government policy, public safety, education, housing, art and community services. Last year, their activities included hosting a community listening session with the South Pasadena Police Department, supporting local anti-racist arts initiatives — including a Black Lives Matter mural to be painted on city hall and successfully pushing for an investigation of the police chief. This year, the group worked on multiple citywide projects, including anti-racist lawn signs, a city council acknowledgement of South Pasadena’s racist past through a “Sundown Town” resolution, pressuring the city to hire a new anti-racist city manager and police chief, and sponsoring volunteer events that assist the homeless. ARC is planning a vigil to commemorate the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder. They’ll continue their call for greater racial equity in the schools.

Developing an artistic persona Mann said her work began with the act of listening, a theme that is infused in her pieces. It started with a deep immersion in oral traditions as a Jew. “I grew up in a very observant household and Judaism is an oral culture,” Mann said. “The most important prayer starts with the word ‘listen.’ There’s even rules against visual representation, so much of my childhood was sonically oriented, not visual.” As she developed her skills as a young artist, she mixed performance ideas into her work. Through natural evolution, she incorporated her background and interests. Her sculptures about the art of listening led her to antique listening objects and oldschool cheerleader megaphones. “They are also listening devices,” Mann said. “You can receive sound through them. They amplify sound and before there were electronic hearing devices, there were ear horns that were megaphone shaped. I was researching that and making art about that. Then I realized these can also amplify sound if I speak through them. I started making these modified megaphones and then just branching out to other kinds of instruments that could be used. It was a many-year evolution.” Her instruments have been used in operas and by nationally and internationally recognized musicians. However, she ensures they are simple enough that anyone can use them even if they are not a trained musician. “I’m not going to make something that I can’t play myself,” Mann said. “They’re all very easy to use, but a musician can use them in a different way than say I could use them. Just like a trained singer could use the megaphone in a way that I could never do, but I can bring my instruments to a street protest or a demonstration and use them and they’re really effective in that way.” Her works are shown in museums, galleries and public spaces around the world. In 2020, she was a city of Los Angeles Individual Artist Fellow and in the fall, she was a 2020 International Artist-in-Residence at Artspace San Antonio.
Each maraca has a unique message and sound. Elana Mann designed them to be used at protests.
Elana Mann’s self-portrait features a horn superimposed on her head to explore the ideas of listening. 05.20.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 27

Pairing folk music traditions with protest Since the exhibit’s opening, Mann has been working on a new project called “Let Suffering Speak.” It is derived from folk music traditions that are tied to histories of resistance and liberation. “In 2018, I began to research folk instruments along with folk music traditions and their connections to political struggles,” Mann said. “I discovered a homemade six-person protest horn in Claremont, California, interviewed a craftsman of a Turkish folk instrument called the ‘saz,’ and researched ‘Rara,’ music associated with the Haitian revolution.” She plans to further develop this line of inquiry, all a part of encouraging the act of radical listening and emboldening voices to speak up and speak out against injustice. This work is not new for her. In 2017, in connection with the Women’s March, she began a street performance troupe called Take a Stand Marching Band. “The project involves a revolving coalition of people who play my sculptural instruments, bringing creativity to the intense and often draining work of street demonstrations,” Mann said. The project’s sculptures have been shown in multiple solo and group exhibitions. Musicians have used them on stage. Huge horn stresses communal speech Dominating the sonic sculpture exhibition at 18th Street are the sculptural folk instruments. They include “Our Work is Never Done (Unfinished Business)” which is modeled on the “Mega-kazoo-horn” that legendary folk music figure Charles Chase made based on an instrument his grandfather, a folk musician and communist, took to Claremont protests in the ’70s. “I was inspired and made this six-person protest horn that amplifies six different voices,” Mann said. “It’s in two parts so it is easy to transport, it is very light, made of fiberglass. It could be brought very easily to a protest space and six people have to agree on what they’re going to say and what their message is going to be — or if they’re all going to be shouting at the same time and not be heard.”
Photo courtesy of the 18th Street Gallery
The six-person sculpture is a playable instrument based on Charles Chase’s Mega-kazoo-horn from Claremont, California.
Maracas fill protest spaces with sound Surrounding the horn on the walls are rattles or maracas, titled “Unidentified Bright Object 11-60.” They are part of Mann’s ongoing series. The display carries 49 of the 60- to 70-piece collection. With individually turned wood handles and heads made of cast ceramic, she finds different things to fill the hollow tops including glass, metal, wood and plastic. Each rattle carries verbiage, such as “Truth,” “Say His Name,” “Say Her Name,” “Stop,” “Rage,” “Justice” or “Equity.” Because they are so lightweight, they are designed to be used at protests. They are also COVID-19-friendly. “For COVID time, the maracas are great because you don’t have to worry about using your voice or breathing in other people’s air,” Mann said. “You can just use touch and wash your hands afterward.” They create a diverse sound at protests and encourage attendees. “I’m a mom with two kids. If I’m going to a protest, I don’t have time to make a custom sign, so I can just stick these in my bag and they’re really loud,” Mann said. “They create another kind of sound and space in a protest arena, where sometimes the sounds are people wanting to be louder to make their voice heard, sometimes they’re trying to drown out sounds — sometimes there are oppressive noises of helicopters or police. This is supposed to bring celebration and joy to the protest space. People really respond. It adds play and pleasure to these kinds of spaces. Also, if you don’t want to shout or you don’t know what to say, you can shake the maraca.”

You have been sued. The court may decide against you without your being heard unless you respond within 30 days. Read the information below. You have 30 CALENDAR DAYS after this summons and legal papers are served on you to file a written response at this court and have a copy served on the plaintiff. A letter or phone call will not protect you. Your written response must be in proper legal form if you want the court to hear your case. There may be a court form that you can use for your response. You can find these court forms and more information at the California Courts Online Self-Help Center (www.courtinfo.ca.gov/selfhelp), your county law library, or the courthouse nearest you. If you cannot pay the filing fee, ask the court clerk for a fee waiver form. If you do not file your response on time, you may lose the case by default, and your wages, money, and property may be taken without further warning from the court. There are other legal requirements. You may want to call an attorney right away. If you do not know an attorney, you may want to call an attorney referral service. If you cannot afford an attorney, you may be eligible for free legal services from a nonprofit legal services program. You can locate these nonprofit groups at the California Legal Services Web site (www.lawhelpcalifornia.org), the California Courts Online Self-Help Center (www.courtinfo.ca.gov/selfhelp), or by contacting your local court or county bar association.
