I

A trip and fall down memory lane

t has been 13 months since I wrote my first column about COVID-19, and I thought it would be interesting to revisit it in light of where we are now. Looking back, I am somewhat stunned at what I couldn’t foresee: that simply wearing a mask would become a political issue for some folks; that we would lose over a half million people to the virus; that conspiracy theorists would create their own pandemic of ignorance. The following column came out in April 2020, and provides a glimpse into the angst many of us experienced at the start of this roller-coaster ride — an anxiety many of us are still dealing with today. ‘No Glove, No Love. No Protection, No Affection!’ People who lived through the worst of the HIV-AIDS epidemic know precisely what that phrase means. Now that we’re facing an actual pandemic that is far easier to spread, the phrase takes on new meaning as we go about our lives. I wanted to wretch when I heard that one of my best friends, visiting his mother at a local hospital, got a full sneeze in his face — from a doctor! Yes, the physician spewed right in my friend’s face. The doctor didn’t even say, “Excuse me,” and my friend and his wife certainly did not say, “Bless you!” They understandably froze. Manners, please! On a recent grocery run, I stopped at a local store that stocks primarily Mexican products to see if they had any bread. It turned out they had fresh bolillos, right out of the oven. They smelled heavenly, hot and yeasty. I was clumsily using enormous tongs to retrieve the bolillos from the case, and an older man — or possibly younger than I am (when did that happen?) — rushes over and grabs a plastic bag for me, then grabs plastic gloves with his bare hands and thrusts them at me. We are all newly sensitive to people touching anything. My uncensored self wanted to yell, “what the hell are you doing!?” Meanwhile, I am using tongs that might be crawling with COVID-19, which I only thought of after the bolillo incident, and here’s this super-polite grocery guy who is now double or even triple-exposing me to a possible killer virus? Really? But did I say anything or leave? No, I did not. Here I am, Ms. Boundary Setter. I advocate and teach boundary setting, locally and

globally. I was so stunned that I politely got the bolillos wrestled into the plastic bag, bought them, and proceeded back out to our car. I handed my husband Ken half of a bolillo, and we gobbled it up. I told him about the encounter with the man, after we ate the crusty roll, and he said, “Oh, well.” I risked my life because I didn’t want to hurt that nice man’s feelings. That means I need to practice saying things that are “impolite” politely when I’m not under stress and while it’s happening. I succeeded in saying to a man at Costco, after witnessing his uncovered cough three different times, “Sir, you need to cover your mouth!” I demonstrated by covering my face with the crook of my elbow. Good grief, people! Pandemiquette! Citizens! Practice doesn’t make perfect, but it does make it accessible, whatever “it” is. Go ahead and practice saying these things to another or in the mirror: “Please back up. Please use a hand sanitizer. Please, cover your mouth in the crook of your elbow.” We are all now part of a paradigm shift in manners. Pandemic Manners — “Pandemiquette” rules — are being forged as I write this. We ordered takeout from a restaurant we love. I waited in the car. Ken ran in to get our food. The owner was talking a blue streak and not keeping their distance. Ken would back up; they’d close the gap. He’d remind them of “6 feet” and they’d stop… and then, it would start over again. Did Ken yell “Back off!” as he’d been trained in his IMPACT Personal Safety Men’s class? No, he did not. Practicing for a possibly violent confrontation is one thing; being direct in the moment during a polite and civil situation is quite another. Restaurant Person blithely took Ken’s card barehanded, then handed him a pen to sign the bill, which he picked up using a napkin hoping they’d get a clue. They did not. They then person-handled the plastic bags, and he came out, paler than I’m used to seeing him. This all gives me so much compassion for the people who are too nervous, scared or polite to ask their partners to use a condom. Friends, we’re condomizing society right now, but it’s not just male reproductive equipment we’re asking people to sheathe, it’s everything. No protection? No affection, business or anything. Y’all, No glove, no love! Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! Contact her at ellen@beautybitesbeast.com.

The ‘Typical American’: Second-generation Asian Americans By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor

A

ngeline Chen often thinks about what her mother’s life would be if she stayed in Taiwan. “It would be kind of cool if I was some sort of spiritual entity watching my mom in another life become this amazingly successful woman in Taiwan,” mused Chen, 45. “What if she was the president?” Chen’s parents met at a house karaoke party as they were starting their new lives in the United States. Chen’s parents, just like many other first-generation Americans, moved to America so their children could have the opportunity for a better life. “I think they would have been fine wherever they were,” Chen said. “My mom and dad are very happy here and I’m very glad they’re here.” But being a child of immigrants can be hard at times, whether it’s sacrificing your time to help out at the family business, finding your voice or just feeling like you belong.

Angeline Chen’s family moved to the United States for a better life.

Finding your voice Born in Lahore, Pakistan, Brandon Shamim moved to the United States when he was three. His family settled in rural West Virginia, where there wasn’t a large population of Pakistanis. “Growing up in a rural community of West Virginia, we were one of only a handful of families that were of our ethnic heritage,” Shamim said. “Living in the communities that we did, there were times that we were reminded that (we) were outsiders.” In West Virginia, Shamim struggled to find his niche. While he viewed himself as a typical American, he felt that those around him looked at him differently. “That was something that I learned at an early age, even in my adolescent years,” said Shamim. “I had to be conscientious of my environments and understand that there were times that even though I did not see myself as someone who was different, people around me may not have seen (me) in that way.” It wasn’t until Shamim and his family moved to Nashville that he found his ever-elusive sense of belonging. “Oftentimes (you) are looking to find your voice and find your purpose, especially when you’re in your adolescent and teen years,” Shamim said. “And, (for me), speech and

Angeline Chen found her voice while helping with the family business.

Palermo’s Pizza Growing up, Chen spent plenty of time in her father’s restaurant, Palermo’s Pizza. Throughout her life, she helped whenever she could, often sacrificing time with her friends. However, after she clocked out, she brought free food to her friends. “I [wanted] to go out on the weekends, but my dad needed me and I’m going to help him. I’m just going to go out after. There’s plenty of time to go out,” Chen recalled. “It was fun. I really enjoyed it because every Friday I would bring pizza back to my friends.” While some teenagers hate to sacrifice their social life for work, Chen enjoyed spending time with her father and making food. Even though her parents never explicitly forced her to work at the restaurant, Chen felt that it was her duty. “I didn’t really feel like I had a choice,” Chen said. “It’s like my obligation as their child. I think that’s part of Asian culture… I just felt like I was supposed to do it. It’s my job as a child to help the family.” Chen carried this sense of service throughout her life, becoming an immigration lawyer. Because she was afforded this opportunity by her parents, she wanted to use her skills to help others. “My ambition is not really to make as much money as I want to,” Chen said. “Money has never been a reason why I did something. I just wanted to impact people’s lives… I had such a wonderful upbringing and I knew I could do anything.” As she advocates for immigrants daily, she is grateful and humbled by her parents’ choice to move to the United States. “It’s hard to move from everything you know to another country, [while] barely speaking the language,” Chen said. “(Being) transplanted from their comfort zone and people who look like them to some place totally different; it is so difficult to succeed.”

Forever foreigner With a large Taiwanese population in the San Gabriel Valley, and with his entire extended family living in the same townhouse complex, Adalon Chen, 35, never felt out of place in his youth. “I just felt normal,” said Chen, who now works as a real estate agent and still lives in the same house in which he grew up. “I felt like this was my community. Everything was normal until I stepped out of it and went outside of the San Gabriel Valley.” After leaving the “cocoon” of the San Gabriel Valley, Chen felt like more of an outsider and disconnected from others. He began to feel the subtle microaggressions as he began his career. Outside of his hometown, he noticed that people spoke slowly to him in English, assuming he didn’t speak it well. “They just talk to you a little slower, like English isn’t my first language,” Chen said. “Like I speak in English, and I think in English. What did I do that was so different?... I can never figure it out because I feel like I’m doing all the things that everyone else is in that situation.” He began to get questions like, “When did you move here?” or “Where are you really from?” While out with his friends, Chen said he could feel those leering eyes, making him feel like a forever foreigner, even though he was born and raised in the United States. “There’s no un-American thing about me on paper other than my parents weren’t from here,” Chen said. “Makes me wonder why that nonbelonging feeling even exists.”

COVID COUNT

Reported cases in Pasadena and surrounding areas as of May 23

South Pasadena: 1,320; Alhambra: 6,866; Unincorporated - Altadena: 3,332; Arcadia: 2,715; Glendale: 20,095; Monrovia: 3,180; San Gabriel: 3,239 Total confirmed cases in Pasadena: 11,280 Total deaths in Pasadena: 346 Total confirmed cases in LA County: 1,238,607 Total deaths in LA County: 24,166 • New COVID-19 cases in Pasadena have remained at its lowest levels since the beginning of the pandemic back in March. The city’s average daily case rate has declined to 1.7, which is the lowest rate recorded since March 26. Pasadena has not reported a single fatality over the past three weeks, and there are currently 11,280 known infections with 346 deaths in total. The numbers highlight the effectiveness of the vaccines; Los Angeles County has reported an infection rate of just 0.03% among 3.3 million people in the county. The county has identified only 933 cases of fully vaccinated residents testing positive for the coronavirus. • Recent studies have shown that the vaccines are extremely effective against coronavirus variants in the greater population. Out of 40 specimens analyzed by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, 53% were UK variants and none were California variants. The research shows the vaccines are highly effective against the variants in Southern California: vaccines have shown to reduce the risk of illness from COVID-19 by 94% among fully vaccinated health care workers. Officials are now offering incentives for people who get vaccinated. Anyone 18 or older who gets their first dose will be entered for a chance to win Lakers season tickets. People vaccinated at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood will be entered for the chance to win a pair of tickets to the musical, “Hamilton.” • More than 9.1 million vaccine doses have been administered in Los Angeles County with more than 5 million residents receiving at least one dose. Currently, over 61% of people aged 16 and over have received one dose with 47% now fully vaccinated. And 84% of residents aged 65 and over have received at least one vaccine dose and 70% of them are fully vaccinated. However, racial and ethnic disparities continue to exist as only 34% of Black residents and 42% of Latino residents have received at least one vaccine dose in comparison to 57% of whites and 67% of Asians. Los Angeles County currently accounts for 34% of California’s coronavirus infections and about 39% of the state’s deaths. The county recently stated that it plans to stop large sites and switch to fully mobile vaccination centers by Aug. 1. — Information compiled by staff writer Doyoon Kim.

debate were those things.” Using speech and debate to find that self-identity, Shamim moved forward in life, refusing to be defined by others’ labels. “I had a really strong sense of self-identity. I was not confused, I knew who I was,” Shamim said. “I’m proud of my heritage. I’m proud of my immigrant background.” With all his lived experience, Shamim hopes to serve as a “beacon of hope” for others in a similar situation to him. “I at least will be someone that keeps that open-minded perspective and will help others find the best within themselves,” Shamim said.

ooking for a place where he could impact people’s lives every day, Greg Sanchez left his job in pharmaceuticals to help the elderly. “I wanted to be in an environment where I could see the difference that I made in someone’s life immediately,” said Sanchez, a co-owner of Home Instead Pasadena. “I get that emotional gratification of knowing that our caregivers have made a difference in someone’s life on a daily basis.” In 1994, Home Instead opened its doors in Omaha as a company providing care to the elderly, especially those with sensory loss. In its 25-year history, it has expanded globally with 1,200 franchises, one of which is in Pasadena. In Pasadena, approximately 16% of the population are elderly, some of whom struggle with some type of sensory loss. According to Home Instead, 83% of seniors live with at least one form of sensory loss. As the body ages, so does our ability to feel the five senses — taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing. Imagine after 70 years of perfectly writing checks, not being able to grasp a pen. Or having your vision taken away from you because of cataracts. Or no longer being able to taste your food. This is what many senior citizens experience as they age and develop sensory losses. “Most seniors are too prideful, and they don’t want to share,” said Sanchez. “This is why we’re really focusing on sensory [loss] to bring it to people’s attention.” Sanchez also says that as seniors begin to lose their senses, they feel more and more isolated. The goal of Sanchez and the team at Home Instead Pasadena is to help seniors and families transition into this new period of their life. “Our caregivers are trying to build relationships with our clients,” Sanchez said. “That way we can be their eyes, we can be their ears [and] we can be all their other senses.” Home Instead serves 160 clients with about 200 caregivers. These caregivers help with everyday tasks such as going to the grocery store, walks and simply being a friend. The jobs of the caregivers have become even more important during the pandemic as many seniors began to feel even more isolated. According to Luz Espinal, lead caregiver, she has seen the mood of her clients change. They are often more depressed since they cannot see their family members as often as before. Espinal tries to help the seniors realize they are not alone by scheduling calls with loved ones and providing company, in addition to the other services. “(Our job) is to make sure that they’re not left alone or (feel like) they’re forgotten,” Espinal said. “That’s how they feel sometimes. That’s what we’re there for — to be a supporter, not just a companion but [to] be a friend.” 05.27.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7

Amara Kitchen: Healthy food is for everyone By Frier McCollister Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

Amara Kitchen

Paola Guasp, owner of Amara Kitchen, says Altadena inspires her.

iming is everything. The original location of Amara Kitchen opened in Highland Park on a sleepy stretch of Avenue 64 in February 2013. The small, sunny café decorated with inverted bouquets of colorful, dried flowers served a limited breakfast and lunch menu of health-minded, freshly crafted dishes, perhaps best typified by avocado toast and the ensuing local craze for it — at the time. That same year, Highland Park was about to explode as LA’s mecca for upwardly mobile hipsters and their budding young families. Sometimes compared to New York City’s Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn, Highland Park rather quickly transformed from a somnolent eastside backwater into a buzzing destination for aspirational creatives and their projects. The Highland Park culinary scene continues to thrive as one of the most diverse and interesting in the city. Amara Kitchen was at the vanguard when it all started. In other words, it has been a very successful venture. For those on the Arroyo’s eastside, that success in Highland Park allowed Amara Kitchen to open its second location in Altadena on April 29. “We’re just expanding the brand,” explained owner and chef Paola Guasp. Indeed, the menu in Altadena is largely identical to its big sister’s in Highland Park. The timing was peculiar. Installed in a storefront that formerly housed a dry cleaner, on the charming one-block strip of East Mariposa Street, west of North Lake Avenue, Amara Kitchen’s intended Altadena opening was announced in fall 2019. Anticipating a lengthy, full buildout of the kitchen space, the opening was anticipated for late fall 2020. Suffice to say, the ensuing pandemic lockdown was not factored into the calendar. “It should have taken maybe a year, but took almost two years. Although the rent is reasonable and I’m not complaining, it was one step backward,” Guasp said. The discovery of the new location was sparked by a move to Pasadena. “Honestly, my partner and I had recently bought a house (in northwest Pasadena) on Marengo and Washington. I was just driving around feeling inspired. I love Altadena. I saw that location and I just fell in love with it,” Guasp recalled. It helped that the landlord was amenable. “The landlord, Joey Galloway, was so great and was super excited about the idea of getting a restaurant in and he was super easy to work with. We just clicked. The rest is history,” Guasp said. While the buildout in Altadena paused with the pandemic, Guasp and her Highland Park staff made a hard pivot last March. “We were able to transition from in-house to takeaway and an online store immediately within 24 hours,” Guasp reflected. “We did everything we could. Keeping people employed felt super important to me. And not just my employees, because when you shut down a restaurant, you’re shutting down farmers, you’re shutting down the linen company, you’re shutting down the wholesalers. It felt important to me to not just quit and surrender. I wanted to put in the effort to make sure we stayed open, in a way that made everyone feel comfortable. It ended up working out really well.” She also focused on the safety of her staff. “At Highland Park, we never closed one day,” Guasp said. “Thank all the gods in the world that we didn’t have any of our staff get COVID. We never had to close. We did regular testing for all of my staff members. Nobody went two weeks without testing.” With the pandemic clouds lifting, the prospect of resuming indoor seating represents another hard pivot. For the moment, both locations are remaining in takeout mode. As Guasp’s affably patient general manager in Altadena, Mclean Denny noted, “It’s a big transition back to seating. We don’t even have dishware yet.” Still, the small skylit dining room in Altadena will likely welcome indoor diners before Highland Park resets. “In Highland Park, I mean I can’t even start to process the idea of shifting back (to indoor seating),” she said. “I’m just going to get Altadena open, since that’s a new start. I’ll start doing dine-in there and then start thinking about the process of shifting Highland Park back.” For Altadena, she just wanted to open the doors and let people know they’re there. For lunch, the menu at Amara Kitchen in Altadena mirrors the Highland Park location.

LUNG CANCER AND COVID-19: A YOUNG MOM’S DOUBLE BATTLE BY ABE ROSENBERG

ince the pandemic began, many patients have faced a dual challenge: navigating their personal cancer journeys while simultaneously coping with new threats created by COVID-19. “I’ve already had 10 such patients,” said Erminia Massarelli, M.D., Ph.D., M.S., co-director of City of Hope’s Lung Cancer and Thoracic Oncology Program. Among them, Jessica Sherrie. In April 2020, Sherrie, a comedian from the San Gabriel Valley, gave birth to her daughter Regina. During pregnancy, Sherrie experienced “intense” back pain. After birth, that pain worsened. Sherrie also became weak, and her cognitive abilities declined. That’s when she and her husband Alec realized something was wrong. The bad news came on Sherrie’s 34th birthday: EGFR-positive lung cancer, which had spread to her brain, spine and pelvis. “I was terrified,” Sherrie said. “Both my in-laws died of lung cancer. I was thinking the worst.” Her father called a friend who worked at City of Hope and urged his daughter to visit the place he called “the best of the best.” By the time she got to Massarelli, Sherrie could not walk, speak or fully comprehend conversations. “She was on the brink of death,” recalled Massarelli. “But I never lose hope. I’ve treated other patients like Jessica, and I’ve witnessed miracles made possible by drugs that target EGFR mutations.” But as soon as Sherrie’s treatment began, so did the setbacks. Treatment with the EGFR inhibitor Tagrisso had to be stopped when Sherrie developed lung inflammation, a rare side effect that put her in the hospital for weeks. She was switched to chemotherapy. Then, as she began rehab to start walking again, Sherrie tumbled and broke her hip, leading to six more weeks in a wheelchair. Then, on New Year’s Eve, Sherrie tested positive for COVID-19. Though it was a mild case, it could not be ignored. “Initially, if someone got [mild] COVID-19, we would wait until they tested negative to admit them because there wasn’t much we could do,” explained Tyler Seto, M.D., vice president of enterprise quality and patient safety. “But now, with the different antibody treatments, we can help these patients. And we have places to safely do it.” City of Hope maintains dedicated inpatient and outpatient COVID-19 treatment units run by staff who focus exclusively on these patients. The units grow and contract as the need for them changes. Additional people were also hired to accommodate these new needs. Everything was in place to treat Sherrie when COVID-19 struck. She received bamlanivimab, an antibody treatment, which worked well. Meanwhile, she continued her chemo, which is also working, along with physical therapy. As a result, Sherrie was finally able to walk into her most recent follow-up exam. Through it all, Sherrie has never given up for one very good reason: her daughter.

Jessica Sherrie with her daughter, Regina. Jessica battled cancer and COVID-19 simultaneously while a patient at City of Hope.

Jessica Sherrie with her husband, Alec, and daughter, Regina.

“She’s worth fighting for,” Sherrie said. At City of Hope, they’ve continued their fight, too. “We haven’t stopped providing excellent cancer care, despite COVID-19,” Massarelli said. She’s concerned that people fearing infection may delay diagnosis or treatment. Fight that fear. “Call us right away.”

If you find your zip code listed below call: 1-800-868-9527 UV3996 “The vaults at Federated Mint are going empty,” said Mar y Ellen Withrow, the emeritus 40th Treasurer of the United States of America. That’s because a decision by Federated Mint to put rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins, some worth up to 50 times their face value, back in circulation means unsearched Vault Bags loaded with U. S. Gov’t issued coins dating back to the 1800’s are now being handed over to U.S. residents who find their zip code listed in today’s publication. “These are not ordinary coins you find in your pocket change. back to the 1800’s so we won’t be surprised if thousands of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because a f ter the ba gs were loaded with nearly 3 pounds of U.S. Gov’t issued coins the dates were never searched and the bags were securely sealed. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search all the coins,” said Withrow. “But don’t thank the Government. As Executive Advisor to Federated Mint, I get paid to inform and educate the general public regarding U.S. coins. Ever since the decision by Federated Mint to put rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins back in circulation, I’m being asked how

much are the unsearched Vault Bags worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees, but we do know this. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and is known to contain rarely seen Morgan Silver Dollars and these coins alone could be worth $40 - $325 in collector value each according to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins. So there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search through all the coins. But you better believe at just $980 these unsearched Vault Bags are a steal, “said Withrow. The only thing U.S. residents who find their zip code printed in today’s publication need to do is call the

National Toll-Free Hotline before the 48-hour deadline ends. This is very important. The Vault Bag fee has been set for $1,500 for residents who miss the 48-hour deadline, but for those U.S. residents who beat the 48hour deadline the Vault Bag fee is just $980 as long as they call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the deadline ends. “Remember this, we cannot stop collectors from buying up all the unsearched bags of coins they can get in this special advertising announcement. The spicy quinoa bowl with chicken is for those who like a little heat.

How would Guasp direct otherwise clueless Altadenans around the menu? “I really love the bison ragu and that’s a recipe that I’ve been making since before Amara was even Amara,” Guasp said. “We also make a homemade almond milk that’s just so special. I like so many things. We’re also known for our breakfast burrito.” The bison ragu ($14.50) is the star of the show on the lunch menu. The bison is pasture-raised, grass fed and sourced from Marin Sun Farms. The ragu is served on quinoa or rice and topped with cilantro, pickled red onions and mixed greens. Other options include the sweet potato quesadilla ($12.50), a brown rice tortilla stuffed with a chipotle sweet potato mash; and the HIHO falafel wrap ($13.50) with feta cheese, tomatoes, greens, cabbage, pickled red onion and Greek yogurt. The latter is inspired by the Palestinian-owned HIHO Market, next door to the Highland Park location. Besides the popular breakfast burrito, morning options span everything from buckwheat pancakes ($12) served with whipped maple butter to “purple eggs” ($12) poached with beets and greens and served on potato patties. Of course, there’s also the now-ubiquitous avocado toast ($8.50) served on housemade brown rice bread and topped with pesto, purple slaw and sesame seeds. Paleo, vegan and gluten-, dairy- and nut-free options are all marked with the requisite blur of acronyms and a key at the bottom of the menu. Pro-tip? The chocolate chip cookie made from Guasp’s recipe is an underground legend. It might also be noted, that with her partner Joey Boyd, Guasp also just opened the Ziv Sandwich shop, inside the Tropicana Market in Highland Park. “Ziv” is a Croatian word that means “to live lively.” “That formerly opened April 1,” Guasp said. “My partner wanted a food project. So, the menu is his. I wanted to have more time between two openings, but it is what it is, and they’re both going.” She said the namesake sandwich is “really good.” Guasp turned philosophical. “Health food has always been pitched to the wealthy,” Guasp said. “That’s changing, thank God. We try to give back to the community as much as possible, so that everybody feels that the food is accessible to them. That’s actually a big part of Amara — making sure we’re contributing, giving access and resources (to the community), not just to the hipsters with the money.”

or most of us, the reality of life in the “yellow tier” has begun to vaguely resemble life “BC” — before COVID-19. Many of are fully vaccinated. There’s a sense of relief and an assurance that a quick run out for a burger or taco isn’t a threat. The city of Pasadena has protected its local restaurateurs and its food culture admirably. That said, bar owners, particularly those without kitchens or the capacity to seat patrons at tables, remain in the same quarantined limbo that has persisted for more than a year. Prior to March 2020, for those in the know, Everson Royce, the cozy wine and spirits shop next to the Armory Center for the Arts, regularly hosted popular public tastings at its sleekly minimalist standing bar, running the length of the store’s southern wall. Most notably, Tuesdays featured $15 wine tasting flights of three curated selections. Boards of artisanal cheeses and charcuterie were placed along the bar for palate-cleansing and voracious snacking. The bartenders were all reliably friendly, knowledgeable and articulate in describing the provenance, terroir and flavor notes of the wines they served. Sometimes, the actual winemaker might even be pouring. The Tuesday night crowd at Everson Royce was always a diverse and convivial gang of oenophiles, gourmands and neighborhood slackers. Even when elbowing into the cheeseboard to fight for the last slice of comte or camembert, smiles abounded, glasses were clinked and friends were made. Besides being a well-loved neighborhood fixture in Pasadena since opening in April 2012, it’s not widely known that Everson Royce is also a primary pulsing node in a vibrant network of gastronomic activity that spans the eastside of Los Angeles and Downtown. Silverlake Wine? It gave birth (literally) to Everson Royce. Everson Royce Bar and Arts District Wine, downtown? Same group. The complex in Highland Park on Figueroa comprising Highland Park Wine, Triple Beam Pizza and the critically acclaimed restaurant Hippo? Yeah, Everson Royce is behind that, too. Joe Capella is one of the three principal partners of Everson Royce along with April Langford and Randy Clement, the couple who also own the mothership: Silverlake Wine. Everson and Royce are the names of their identical twin sons, who recently turned 11. Capella is usually found in the Pasadena shop. He’s the tall, genial guy with the purple beard. “I was friends with Randy and April, who are two of the three owners of Silverlake Wine,” Capella said. “They are also the parents of the eponymous Everson and Royce, twin boys. I was interested in doing something in the world of hospitality and I asked them if they could give me some advice. The answers were in this succession: Yes, but what’s there to talk about? Let’s just start doing things together and I said, ‘OK,’” Capella explained. During the next few months, the plan to expand came together. Formerly the site of Heritage Wines, the Raymond Avenue spot was discovered and secured. Specializing in organic, biodynamic and naturally cultivated wines from small producers around the world, the store typically stocks more than 600 labels, including a wide selection of artisanal spirits. The local response was enthusiastic, and the success of the Pasadena venture led to the opening of Everson Royce Bar in LA’s Downtown Arts District in September 2015. Also known as ERB, the bar quickly became known for its food menu of small plates and snacks engineered by Nancy Silverton protégé, Matt Molina, who had previously helmed Silverton’s Osteria Mozza, when it garnered a Michelin star. At Everson Royce, there’s always a deeper connection. “Randy, the father of Everson and Royce, started at (Silverton’s) Campanile the same week that Matt started at Campanile, many, many years ago now,” Capella said. “Randy was a server at Campanile. Matt was a line cook and they worked at Campanile together for a number of years and then always kept in touch. “When Matt was looking for some new challenges and new opportunities, we had opportunities and challenges. It was fortunate. It was fortuitous in the technical sense of that word, but it was also quite fortunate.” Molina’s culinary turns were lauded widely, and ERB became a popular buzzing hub in the Arts District. ERB has largely been shuttered during the pandemic, but Capella was hoping to reopen as soon as May 26. “We have some plumbing issues that are on city property,” Capella said. “That’s always a little bit of an adventure, but we’re getting those fixed right now. We could have technically opened before now, but we weren’t prepared for it. So, we decided better to be safe and do it right than rush it.” The menu is still the Molina’s baby, as he’s the executive chef. That said, Molina is also the chef at his own restaurant, the upscale Hippo in Highland Park. Hippo is the cornerstone CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

operation in the small complex that also houses Highland Park Wine (also owned and operated by the Everson Royce partners) and Nancy Silverton’s popular walk-up Roman-style pizzeria, Triple Beam Pizza. “We were putting that package together for a while,” Capella said. The Triple Beam Pizza saga is also worth noting. “It just worked out in relatively casual conversations with Nancy,” Capella said. “She said, ‘Hey, I’ve got this idea for a Roman-style pizzeria that I’ve just been mulling over for a bit. Would you guys like to do it with me?’ We said, ‘Yes!’ She says, ‘Before you answer, you’ve got to go to Rome and go to this pizzeria I’m thinking about.’” For eight days, Capella and Molina traveled around Rome, consumed the pizza and agreed to a pizzeria. It’s well worth a jaunt to Avenue 59 and Figueroa for a scissor-cut rectangular slice or two of the authentic, pan-baked pie. Everson Royce has remained open through the pandemic, though customers can’t browse the aisles like the old days. Call ahead for a specific order or come up to the gated open door for personal consultation with Capella or his affable colleague, Eric Olney. While the public has been waiting for the wine bar action to resume, Capella has been supporting the community during the pandemic. Partnering with the nonprofit No Us Without You, Capella helped raise $23,000 in a raffle of 16 bottles of single barrel whiskeys he selected. Again, the connections run remarkably deep. No Us Without You’s mission is to provide food and support to undocumented hospitality workers and their families. Formed the day after the lockdown ensued in March, No Us Without You distributes more than 160,000 pounds of food every week to over 1,600 families. The founders of No Us Without You are Othon Nolasco and Damian Diaz. Nolasco is the former bar director at Everson Royce Bar and Diaz was a lead bartender there. The latest community effort at Everson Royce is the sale of select single-barrel, numbered bottles of El Tesoro Reposada tequila. Again, the promotion directly benefits No Us Without You. The limited edition bottles are sold at $33. “We donate $33 for every bottle sold,” Capella said. “So, every bottle of tequila that gets sold feeds a family of four for a week. We’re just happy to be in Pasadena and happy to be in a position to help people.”

tate Sen. Susan Rubio hosted a rally May 19 in support of her California state legislature bill. The bill, SB 805, aims to support small performing arts venues as the state emerges from the pandemic, providing payroll-focused funding to sponsor workers who often work for no or sub-minimum wage pay. The event was hosted outside CASA 0101, a small theater in Boyle Heights founded by Josefina López. López wrote the now-famous play-turned-movie “Real Women Have Curves” more than 30 years ago while working in local LA theaters. Her work’s success funded CASA 0101 — now a major East Los Angeles theater hub and community center that López proudly declared she bought instead of a Beverly Hills mansion. “What options do we have to tell the truth?” López said about artists like herself who get their start in local theaters, opening the rally. “I didn’t want to die with my stories left in me. (That’s) why SB 805 is saving our lives.” The rally’s speakers picked up López’s passionate torch. Several notable film and theater actors — among them Danny Glover, Edward James Olmos, Michelle Krusiec and Kirsten Vangsness — spoke in support of SB 805 as members of a coalition of dozens of performing arts organizations and venues. They all cosigned a document approving the legislation, which Rubio called “a lifeline.” “It matters that we all stand together,” Rubio said. “I know what the performing arts have meant to me. I happened to have been involved in gangs, and now I’m a state senator.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Many at the rally spoke poetically about the transformative power of theater, including Rubio. She grew up in Downtown Los Angeles and participated in community theater, which she said provided her a safe place to avoid the illicit activity that surrounded her as a child. She was heavily involved in the performing arts before becoming a teacher for nearly two decades and eventually a politician—a journey López described as “from the barrio to the state capitol.” Rubio framed the bill as essential support for community performance venues that suffered hard during the pandemic and as a kind of ideological boon from the state government. But a common theme across all the speakers was the bill’s decided untimeliness. Many believe the bill has been both practically and ideologically “overdue.” “SB 805 is way overdue,” said Oscar-nominee Edward James Olmos. “It makes no sense that we even have to ask for it.” Some took a less arts-centric approach, opting for an economic argument. In the actual legal text of SB 805, it claims every SNPAC (small, nonprofit performing arts companies) creates an average of 64 jobs every year, contributing to a total “121,436 jobs created by the sector” annually. “Criminal Minds” actress Vangsness and actor French Stewart also pointed out the money that flows into communities through local theaters, highlighting the influx of cash around performances. “When you invest in theater, you’re also investing in the restaurant next to it,” Stewart said. “If corporations are people, people are also infrastructure.” Others brought up how local theaters provide powerful outlets for their communities. Many people who are marginalized or live at society’s fringes struggle to break into major public arenas, making small performance venues their only options to share their stories. “Artists are the gatekeepers of the truth,” Glover said. “Community theater is about healing [and] transformation. This is what we need. We need this for the community. We need this bill.” “We shouldn’t have to ask for this,” said actor Ben Guillory, who founded the Robey Theater Downtown alongside Glover. “When this bill is passed, we’ll be able to go on fulfilling our mission statements. SB 805 makes it doable.” Theaters like the Robey and CASA 0101 will receive funding through SB 805’s allocation infrastructure. But the actual money would come from a $1 billion arts funding request, championed by Rubio alongside fellow Democratic State Sen. Ben Allen. The proposed funding would also go toward funding museums, building arts-oriented economic infrastructure, increasing community access to the arts and creating job training programs. The day after the rally, May 20, SB 805 was passed by the State Senate’s Appropriations Committee, meaning it will soon head to the Senate floor. There Senators will have a chance to decide the bill’s fate, voting on it tentatively between May 28 and June 4. Potentially passing it along to the general assembly and ultimately the Governor’s office. If passed, the funding would eventually reach the community theaters and performance venues many fear will go under before their pre-pandemic business can trickle back in. “I’ve had a career because of small theater,” said working local actress Vanessa Stewart. “If (SB 805) doesn’t pass, these incubator theaters will go away. If SB 805 does pass, then thousands of jobs will be created. It’s the most progressive piece of legislation California has seen in years.”

PUSD music teacher brings Francis Frances home By Bliss Bowen Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

T

he pandemic has spawned more than a year’s worth of creative shifts for artists, from new albums to projects in different genres or mediums. But local saxophonist Michael Birnbryer-Lao says his debut EP, released in late February under the banner of his musical alter ego, Francis Frances (francisfrances.com), was inspired not by the lockdown but by a “thought experiment” and processing his fears. “The big fear was losing my wife and son in some tragic way,” Birnbryer-Lao explained. The music’s comforting vibe, he elaborated, is a “reflection of the most important role that music plays for me in my life, in a functional way, aside from being a career path in different ways. I just love that soothing space that comes from making music.” As a sideman, Birnbryer-Lao has recorded with Brother Ali, Pharcyde and Scott Weiland. (He also played some local shows with Weiland before the ex-Stone Temple Pilots frontman’s death in 2015.) He reached out to multi-instrumentalist Miles Senzaki, aka Point Lobo, to make the Francis Frances EP, “I’m Home.” The four songs — “Back Again,” “Before I Knew You Well,” the gauzy “Bereaved” and sax-gilded title track — meld pop melodies with R&B rhythms, ambient textures, and gently uplifting messages. The Sunland resident has been teaching music in the Pasadena Unified School District since 2008, (“at Blair exclusively for 11 years”), and students benefit from his experiences as an independent musician. He had already been using a browser-based digital workstation for music production and songwriting lessons when they began returning to physical classrooms. A month into hybrid learning, most are now composing and doing remixes; Birnbryer-Lao said he also has them perform contemporary music by the likes of Lizzo, Khalid or the “Black Panther” film score. They respond to instruments as well as computers, but he acknowledges a “compartmentalization” that occurs with younger generations weaned on computer-generated music. Shifting to hybrid learning has been a “tremendous transition” near the end of a school year shaped by historic change, and Birnbryer-Lao said he’s noticed “students across the board” struggling emotionally and psychologically. Inevitably, that gets processed in assignments focused on “socio-emotional connections to music.” “One project we did was around a memory, a dream for their summer or a dream for their future — helping them connect their inner world and expressing it through music. It’s kind of a music therapy approach,” Birnbryer-Lao said. “When we did summer dream, it’s all about hanging out with their friends. When it came to moods, and we’re writing some songs right now, a lot of things are around feelings of anxiety or feelings of loss. Like there’s a middle-school student whose dad died of COVID-19 five months ago, and he did a song about a memory. I asked, ‘Do you want to share what the memory was?’ And he said, ‘I’d rather not share.’ It was a beautiful piece of music. You could almost imagine where it was.”

ALLISON RUSSELL, “Outside Child” (Fantasy): HHHH The songs on Russell’s first solo album are as “acutely personal” as she indicates in liner notes, revisiting childhood abuse, escape, self-discovery, heritage and saviors, including her grandmother (the haunting, Celtic-rooted “Hy Brasil”) and husband/Birds of Chicago partner JT Nero (“Joyful (expletive)”), with whom she co-wrote all the songs. Past collaborations (BOC, Po’ Girl, Our Native Daughters) occasionally echo behind Russell’s smoky vocal tones and melodies; “Nightflyer” bears a seductive BOC cadence, and the clarinet- and banjo-framed “All of the Women,” with ghostly harmonies from the McCrary Sisters, would fit a Native Daughters set. But “Outside Child” is a transcendent, profoundly soulful synthesis of Russell’s personal and creative experiences, and one of the most moving albums to be heard this year. allisonrussellmusic.com DESERT HOLLOW, “Thirsty” (Mule Kick): HHH Vocalist/poet Nicole Olney and Nocona fiddler/banjoist Xander Hitzig joined forces after performing in Paul Overstreet’s 2015 jukebox musical “Sneaky Ole Time” at Santa Monica’s Ruskin Group Theatre, but their debut EP as Desert Hollow is markedly more rustic than Overstreet’s Nashville tunesmithing. The centerpiece track, “Look at Those Birds,” picks up the tradition of Appalachian legends such as Jean Ritchie, while vintage California country influences can be discerned between the harmonies and upbeat melodies of “Mary” and “I Can’t Wait for Winter.” A refreshing country-folk debut. deserthollowmusic.com ROBERT FINLEY, “Sharecropper’s Son” (Easy Eye): HHH½ Reteamed with blues-attuned producer/Black Keys cofounder Dan Auerbach, the legally blind soul singer demonstrates once again he is a potent old-school entertainer as he shares stories from his colorful biography. It’s Finley’s third album since his late-in-life comeback in 2015, after years of performing soul and gospel at regional Louisiana venues, and he gets solid support from Auerbach, a full horn section, and a choice crew of blues and country veterans. His hope and celebratory spirit are hard to resist. Highlights: “My Story,” “Souled Out on You” (showcasing Finley’s vigorous falsetto), “Starting to See” and “Better Than I Treat Myself.” robertfinleyofficial.com BIG CHIEF MONK BOUDREAUX, “Bloodstains & Teardrops” (Whiskey Bayou): HHH An enjoyable release rippling with reggae and blues from the Mardi Gras fixture and 2016 National Heritage Fellowship honoree, reunited with producer/guitarist Tab Benoit, his bandmate in Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars (an extension of Benoit’s nonprofit effort to convince politicians to shore up Louisiana’s fast-eroding coastline). The vibe is relaxed, with sweet interludes such as “Should’ve Been a Preacher Man” outshined by livelier tracks. It doesn’t take much imagination to envision Boudreaux leading a parade or New Orleans festival audiences with “Choo Choo,” the Cajun-seasoned “Blues, Blues, Blues” or “Kingston Blues.” bigchiefmonkboudreaux.com

© 2021 City of Hope

What are odds, exactly? Numbers. And numbers mean nothing. Watching your daughter blow out the candles on her next birthday cake — now, that means something. At City of Hope, we’re dedicated to fighting cancer because we know that these somethings are everything. We’re constantly discovering new, innovative ways to use your unique genetic and molecular profile to identify the best treatment for your cancer. With more than seven decades in the San Gabriel Valley, our high positive outcomes tell the story. Your story. One not defined by the statistics, but by the science, perseverance and sheer will to defy them. Discover more at CityofHope.org/SGV
