There used to be balance in nature, but man has ruined it all by greed and overproduction. It’s the worst thing since The Fall. When Noah loaded the creatures, he took two of each species to save. Now man has tipped the balance. The situation has become grave. When apes were the dominant species, they understood Nature’s way, but evolution kept on expanding; Unethical humans hold sway. So COVID 19 is her answer to man’s destructive bent. She’ll simply eliminate people And Earth will not care where they went. ~SALLY CURRIE PASADENA

MASK UP
This is our community and we must endeavor to protect it. Wearing non-medical masks when we’re out and about doing our essential trips could help slow the transmission of COVID-19 when combined with physical distancing and hand hygiene. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19 is primarily transmitted through droplets and contact. Under the right circumstances, normal breathing could propel droplets up to approximately three feet and sneezing to approximately 20 feet horizontally. Wearing a non-medical mask offers some filtration as well as a reminder to not touch your nose and mouth. We do NOT need an N95 or surgical mask to be protected out in public — especially since we should be six feet away from each other anyway. Leave the medical-grade masks to our health care workers who are at the highest risk due to their close proximity and constant exposure to patients. As of this moment, we don’t have enough masks and we must make sure that our health care workers are adequately protected so they can continue to take care of us. Also, play it wise! Continue to support the quarantine and religiously practice physical distancing and hand hygiene. Avoid touching your face, cough and sneeze into your arm and have a healthy lifestyle to support your immune system. Let’s continue to protect each other. ~LAUREEN LOPEZ-BERRY VIA EMAIL
THE BEST DISINFECTANT
Perhaps COVID-19 is a good thing. It’s reteaching us the lessons of the Spanish Influenza that led America to develop suburbs and the car culture. • Housing Density Kills • Public Transportation Kills • Multi-use Packaging Kills Perhaps we can do something smart like actually make zoning and building codes in the interest of public health, rather than the interest of offshore investors, tax dodgers and worshipers of the Gaia human hating
cult. Don’t hold your breath though. The politicians would gladly let half of us die for their next campaign contribution and the Zoning Nazis are so deep in their dogma that reality even if applied by a 2x4 to the cheeks cannot reach them. There are reasons why Southern California, even though we have a high rate compared to the rest of California, does not have the infection rate or death toll New York has. The first vector of death is Public Transportation. New York City’s public transportation is in dark, poorly ventilated underground tubes, an environment viruses love. Even in Los Angeles, after rest home residents the second highest infection rate is among public transportation users. But our percentage of people using public transportation is small. NYC its almost 80 percent of the population. Next our housing stock is not dense and most of the pre-1985 dense housing has exterior balcony hallways, not enclosed lobbies, and long, deep enclosed poorly ventilated seldom cleaned hallways. Density and particularly density coupled with long, dark, sunshine-absent hallways are vectors of death. This has been observed now for ONLY 200 years. It’s also one reason that dense Scandinavian housing tends to put hallways along a central sunlit core, because sunshine actually really is the best disinfectant. That’s not just a saying about political transparency. The zoning code writers who have always despised modernism for the freedom of spirit that it grants to the individual and who have attempted to eradicate it under the false guise of saving the Earth, forget or never knew that modernism was founded in solid science dealing with the physical and psychological health of the human being. You cant save the Earth for human habituation if you kill humans with doctrinaire, stupid and unhealthy designs. ~ STEVE LAMB VIA EMAIL

NEEDS THAT ONLY GROW
DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS KNOWS OUR DANGEROUS WORLD DID NOT STOP TURNING WITH THE ONSET OF COVID-19
W
hen the best charity organization in the world calls on us for help, why do we use COVID-19 as an excuse to ignore its pleas? Maybe you saw us blocking the door at Whole Foods, or maybe you saw us dancing at the Santa Monica Pier. Maybe you even heard us loudly telling “dad jokes” in Old Pasadena, and maybe you skated by unseen. I am a face-to-face fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders, otherwise known as Medecins sans Frontier (MSF). Since 1971, MSF has provided free medical care for those who have absolutely no access to such “luxuries” that we take for granted. Doctors and nurses go to war zones, impoverished nations, and natural disaster areas to make sure those in their greatest hour of need get medical care. I like to call them real-life Superhero Angels, sent to Earth to heal the sick and wounded. OK, let’s try to NOT talk about the pandemic for just one more paragraph, please. Did you know that women are still dying from preventable causes during childbirth? Actually, every day about 800 women lose their lives because they can neither find nor afford proper care before, during and after pregnancy. That is why MSF has set up mobile work stations and hospitals all over the world; specifically to find these women and children and provide life-saving care. Unfortunately, earlier this month there was an attack on an MSF-sponsored maternity ward in Kabul, Afghanistan. Why would anyone attack a maternity ward? Who can say? What we do know is there are parts of this world dealing daily with extreme, senseless acts of bloody violence and unwarranted attacks. So, back to COVID-19ology, with stay-at-home orders in place in Southern California I quickly became a virtual fundraiser, one who works from home. To no one’s surprise, volunteer doctors still need help with medical supplies. As a result, many
like me make hundreds of calls a day to educate and convince folks to become field partners of MSF. This involves giving $25 each month to quite literally save lives. The excuses are always the same; “I don’t have time.” “I don’t have money.” “I don’t give over the phone.” The list goes on and on, but here are two that make my blood boil: “I can’t give up my money because we are in a pandemic.” And, “I can’t give to you, because I give locally and that’s better for me.” First, the fact that we are in a pandemic is probably the greatest reason to give to a charity that provides free medical care. I know you are furloughed. I know you might have a job that may not be there next month. But is $25 going to stop you from keeping your lights on? No, but it is going to provide a month’s supply of protective gloves for up to 10 medics. You want this pandemic to end? MSF does too — and you don’t even have to risk your life to stop it. The doctors and nurses will do that for you, for us. So let’s get local for a moment. I love supporting local businesses and causes. You become a useful part of the community and are able to watch the positive result. Just tell me who was supposed to give the equivalent of $25 locally for securing those 24 patients that lost their lives in that maternity ward attack in Kabul? Do you think that people living in that region are able to help each other out if MSF even has to be there? Not every place on Earth has people like us living locally. And some icing on the cake, MSF is now fairly local. Because the US does not seem to know how to provide free medical care, especially to its housing insecure population, MSF has officially stepped in. MSF recently set up shower trailers, handwashing stations, and passed out 1,000 mobile phones to vulnerable New Yorkers who lack the technology to contact emergency services. If anyone can’t see how giving to Doctors Without Borders is the solution to ending this pandemic, keep hiding $25 under your mattress every month for the second wave of COVID-19. n Maggie Shaak, a resident of Alhambra, is a fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders. WORKERS WORRY CITY WILL ROLL BACK $15 MINIMUM WAGE DUE TO PANDEMIC’S IMPACTS ON LOCAL BUSINESSES BY MATT RODRIGUEZ
W
ith just more than a month to go before a $15 minimum wage goes into effect, all while the novel coronvirus wreaks havoc on the nation’s economy, those who would benefit most from the increase want to make sure the Pasadena City Council doesn’t change its mind. “In times of pandemic, you need more resources in the pockets of working people so they can live and feed their families,” said National Day Laborers Organizing Network Director Pablo Alvarado. “The City Council committed to raise the minimum wage by July 1. That is the commitment they made and that is the commitment that we expect them to honor, especially in times of pandemic.” The council unanimously passed the city’s 2016 minimum wage ordinance after similar measures passed in both Los Angeles County and the city of LA. The ordinance would raise the minimum wage to $15 for businesses with 26 or more employees on July 1 while smaller businesses with 25 or less employees will have to pay their employees a minimum of $14.25. “We recognize that [businesses are] getting hammered by this pandemic [with] the loss of business and the forced closures,” said Mayor Terry Tornek. “But for me, I think rolling back the minimum wage is not something that we should do.” The ordinance sparked controversy in 2016 among many local businesses, which has only grown amidst the economic crash caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s killing them,” Pasadena Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Pauil Little said about the effect the pandemic has had on local buisinesses. “Almost every business in Pasadena has been impacted one way or another.” Little and the chamber represent the many local businesses that are asking the City Council to reconsider the minimum wage raise and transfer to the state’s minimum wage schedule, which delays the raise to $15 until 2022. “There will be even fewer jobs available for minimum-wage workers and it may put some people out of business,” Little said. “At this point, it’s difficult to predict what may put somebody out of business, since it’s a whole host of things. At this point, the last thing that we need to be doing, if we’re at all concerned about the economy, jobs, businesses and the community, is adding costs anywhere.” Little, a former Pasdena council member, knows that the virus has affected everyone, not just businesses, but also the workers. However, he believes this is not the right time to implement the minimum wage raise. “I know Pablo and I know all those guys. They’re not evil. They have a point,” he said.
“In a world where there was no lack of funds, fine. But at this point, in this world right now, that’s not the case.” Alvarado shares the same sentiments as Little but still believes that the needs of the lowest wage workers outweigh the needs of the Pablo Alvarado businesses. “We understand that the pandemic has affected everyone,” Alvarado said. “We are sensitive toward the needs of the restaurant and business owners. We want businesses to flourish. No one is saying that they’re not affected. The question is who’s more affected? [Is it] the restaurant owner or the dishwasher? I can tell you for sure that it is the dishwasher.” Alvarado believes that the burden of the crisis should fall on the businesses, with the assistance from the local government. “The city has done a number of things,” said Tornek. “We’ve done that $11 million plus rebate to businesses from the [Utility Underground Surtax]. We did a ‘no eviction’ for commercial tenants. We implemented the Great Plates program which pays a lot of money to restaurants to provide meals to seniors… There’s a lot of stuff that we’re doing to help businesses.” Tornek continued listing the numerous programs that the city has implemented to try to help businesses during this crisis but realizes that owners still fear their business will close. “I think those fears are 100 percent justified and that’s why I just went through that laundry list of things that we’ve been trying to do be of value. The fear is very real and very tangible,” said Tornek. Reflecting on his past as a small business owner, Tornek understands the predicament facing many of these businesses. “It’s been alleged by some that because I’m not willing to support rolling back or pausing the minimum wage bump… that I’m not appreciating the gravity,” said Tornek. “In various times in my career, I’ve run a small business… [I’ve] had to worry about how to meet payroll and if I was going to have the money to keep the thing going. I’m absolutely sympathetic and empathetic. I just don’t think we can, in this particular instance, do it at the expense of the people who earn the least.” n
‘HIGH-LEVEL SNAPSHOT’ CHRONOLOGICAL ACCOUNT OF CITY’S FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19 RAISES QUESTIONS BY KEVIN UHRICH
D
espite recent criticisms about the city’s handling of the high number of COVID-19-related deaths occurring at skilled nursing homes and assisted living facilities, a consultant’s report on the response to the pandemic praised the Pasadena Public Health Department’s efforts at stemming the high number of deaths occurring among elderly people. “As a result of my review, I found the PPHD to have responded in a timely and thorough manner to provide orders and technical assistance to prevent, detect and/or mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in long-term care facilities,” wrote Brenda G. Klütz, managing partner of Sacramento-based B&R Klütz Consulting, LLC. “These efforts seem to be a continuation of the PPHD’s commitment to improve the health of vulnerable residents in long-term care facilities.” More important than what is stated in the 12-page document, however, is what is not mentioned that bothers members of the City Council looking for answers to the growing number of deaths occurring in local skilled nursing facilities, or SNFs. “This is third-hand,” Councilman Tyron Hampton told Pasadena Star-News reporter Bradley Bermont. Hampton also serves as vice mayor. “Someone told this consultant what to write and they wrote it. There needs to be a thorough, independent investigation,” Hampton said. Councilman Victor Gordo said he was looking for the opportunity for a “learning experience” from the report. “We need to learn from our experience with this. We need to be out in front of it,” Gordo told the Pasadena Weekly. But, he said, “This chronology does not do that.” “What would be helpful to me is a little more clarity in the form of a diagram or some exposition on how the regulatory authority is really divvied up between the state Department of Public Health, the county and the city,” said Mayor Terry Tornek.
“It’s overlapping and a little confusing,” Tornek said. “But apparently some of the council members don’t feel it was adequate and it didn’t answer all their questions, so we need to get them to articulate exactly what their questions are and we’ll do it again.” According to the city, there are 16 skilled nursing facilities in Pasadena, with 886 beds per 100,000 residents, as compared to 383 facilities in Los Angeles County with 382 beds per 100,000 residents. This means there are 2.3 times more beds per 100,000 residents in Pasadena than LA County. The Klütz report is largely a self-described “high-level snapshot” of events illustrating the Health Department’s performance in overseeing elder care in the city, as well as its response to the pandemic in actions taken from January through May. According to the timeline, city Health Director Dr. Ying-Ying Goh declared a local public health emergency on March 4 at a joint press conference with LA County and Long Beach health officials, as Gov. Gavin Newsome declared a state of emergency in California. The next day, local health officials “began in-person visits to every state-licensed skilled-nursing facility in the jurisdiction. Nurses conducted on-site COVID-19 preparedness training with facilities staff,” the chronology states. Also on that day, “SNFs were directed to follow the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidance for designation of specific staff with infection prevention and PPE training to care for patients with confirmed or suspected COVID-19, to instruct staff to monitor for symptoms and not work if sick, and to make contingency staffing plans should staff be sick. SNFs were directed to follow CDC guidance for ‘Strategies to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 in Long-Term Care Facilities’ that included posting signs to restrict sick visitors in order to prevent introduction of COVID-19 into facilities, and to report any possible cases of COVID-19

among residents or employees to the local public health department.” In April, states the chronology, “PPHD staff continued on-site visits and daily communication with facilities. PPHD conducted daily communication and coordination with agencies with regulatory authority of long-term care facilities.” On March 16, Goh issued written directives and guidance to facilities, including requirements to restrict visitors and non-essential personnel, instituting symptom screening for anyone entering a facility, and not allow anyone with symptoms to enter. On March 17, the city Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program “offered all skilled nursing facility administrators, directors of nursing and infection control preventionists an allocation of N95 respirators.” On March 18, the Health Department “notified assisted living facilities and adult/senior care facilities of a scheduled conference call on COVID-19,” which offered “guidance, outlined specific actions to take to protect clients, residents and staff and to slow the spread of the disease.” On March 19, Goh issued a Safer at Home order, and revised it on March 22 to incorporate the State Health Officer’s Stay at Home order. On March 27, Goh “issued orders requiring the self-isolation of persons diagnosed with or likely to have COVID-19 and self-quarantine of persons exposed to a person diagnosed with or likely to have COVID-19.” March 30 was marked by the first report of a skilled nursing facility resident diagnosed with COVID-19. The report was submitted by the hospital when the patient was admitted, not by the SNF. Starting April 1, health officials “continued on-site visits and daily communication with facilities and conducted daily COVID-19 clinical team case conferences to review cases and develop recommendations for each long-term care facility.” Goh then implemented COVID-19 testing strategies at these facilities, including outbreak investigation testing,” the timeline states. On April 9, Chief Assistant City Prosecutor Michael Dowd sent letters to every skilled nursing and assisted living facility listing nine action items that they were required to implement in order to be in compliance with existing health orders. Over the following week, the city prosecutor’s office then contacted each of the SNF and assisted living facilities by phone or email, reminding them of their duties under the orders and to re-emphasize the action items required to be implemented, the timeline states. In May, Health Department staff “continued on-site visits and daily communication with SNFs and assisted living facilities, and coordination with agencies with regulatory authority of long-term care facilities.” The department also conducted daily COVID-19 clinical team case conferences to review cases and develop recommendations for each long-term care facility. PPHD, the report states, “continued implementation of mass testing strategies in all facilities.” Goh then ordered long-term care facilities to conduct COVID-19 diagnostic testing , required SNFs to implement a Facility Mitigation Plan, including testing and cohorting as directed by the local Health Department, and required SNFs to designate or hire an infection preventionist to ensure proper training on infection prevention, and for the SNF to have a plan for adequate PPE, including established contracts with vendors, states the timeline. In the end, the consultant wrote, “The PPHD initiated restrictions on visitation of long-term care facility residents, and soon afterward enforced a ban on visitors. In addition, long-term care facilities were prohibited from admitting any new residents. The PPHD also worked closely with state licensing agencies, so that those agencies could impose more serious sanctions if warranted.” On Tuesday, Pasadena recorded 82 deaths due to COVID-19, up by 11 deaths since last week, with 72 of those patients being tenants of elder care facilities. That number is up from 64 last week, according the Health Department’s COVID-19 dashboard on the city’s website. “I think the Health Department is working very hard in a very tough environment, and I think the circumstance with the nursing homes is not unique to Pasadena. I think it’s a national, even international problem,” Tornek said. Gordo said he was hoping for more detail that the council could study, “so we are in the best position to protect Pasadena residents going forward. I think we have an obligation to do that.” “Despite major obstacles, the Health Department has and will continue to take the necessary actions to mitigate the spread of the virus, knowing this will be a sustained response,” wrote City Manager Steve Mermell. “The city will continue to evaluate our progress and build upon lessons learned at a local level and from our county, state and federal partners,” Mermell wrote. n

ANOTHER LIFE LOST
MAN’S FAMILY SUES GLENDALE NURSING FACILITY ALLEGING ELDER ABUSE, NEGLIGENCE AND WILLFUL MISCONDUCT IN CORONAVIRUS DEATH BY KEVIN UHRICH
T
he family of a 77-year-old Ricardo Saldana, who got sick while living at the Glenhaven Healthcare nursing home in Glendale and died of COVID-19 five days after being admitted to a hospital in early April, has sued, alleging elder abuse, willful misconduct, negligence and wrongful death. In the lawsuit, attorney Scott Glovsky said staff members at Glenhaven Healthcare, located on West Chevy Chase Drive in Glendale, were told to not wear face masks throughout March. “They downplayed coronavirus and suggested it was like the flu,” Glovsky told Ricardo Saldana KNX News Radio’s Craig Fiegener. “It got so bad that a staff member contacted Ricardo’s daughter and had her contact the Health Department and report the situation,” said Glovsky, who has offices in Pasadena and Claremont. “Due to HIPAA and state privacy laws, we are absolutely prohibited from discussing any alleged current or former patient of our facility. In fact, we are unable to confirm whether any individual is or was a patient at our facility. We can definitively say that Glenhaven Healthcare heroes put our patients first every day. Our nurses are trained on and follow applicable guidelines from the Department of Public Health and the CDC. We are extremely proud of our ongoing service to our patients and the community during a time of enormous challenges for health care providers in our country,’’ company officials wrote in a statement issued to the media last week. “This is a case about profits over people,” Glovsky wrote in the introduction to the lawsuit filed in LA County Superior Court on Thursday, May 21, against Glenhaven Healthcare, LLC by Saldana’s wife and three children. Glenhaven Healthcare, Grovsky alleges, concealed the fact that a working staff member had been exposed to the coronavirus while prohibiting its staff members from wearing masks and gloves. According to the lawsuit, it was not until April 1, after one of Saldana’s daughters filed a complaint with the LA County Department of Public Health, that facility managers encouraged nurses and other employees to wear masks. “On a number of occasions, members of the nursing staff brought their own masks and bandanas to wear while working because of their concerns for the virus,” the lawsuit states. One nurse named in the lawsuit allegedly told a manager that she was sick and needed to wear a mask to protect the patients and other employees, but was told COVID-19 was just a flu and that she was not allowed to wear a mask. As the documents alleges, “Glenhaven transferred a resident who had shared a room with a COVID-19 positive resident to a two bedroom in late March. Prior to this move, Ricardo did not show any signs or symptoms. Once the other person was moved into the room with Ricardo, he began to develop a fever and other symptoms of the coronavirus. Ricardo’s condition continued to degrade and the staff attempted to treat the condition with medication which was known at the time to be contraindicated for coronavirus. Ultimately, Ricardo died on April 13, 2020 from the coronavirus.” “The complaint alleges they were told not to wear masks. They had a staff meeting, and they downplayed the coronavirus, saying it was like the flu, and no one was allowed to wear a mask. This is after it was known that one of their nurses was exposed,” said Glovsky. n

A NEW WAY TO LEARN PUSD CREATES A VIRTUAL WAY FOR STUDENTS TO ATTEND CLASS FROM HOME
BY MATT RODRIGUEZ
S
he got the idea from text messages from her cousins in Shanghai and Italy. “My cousin in Shanghai had gotten quarantined very early on in January,” said Helen Chan Hill, a Pasadena Unified School District administrator. “Then my cousins in Italy got locked down... And then they all were saying, ‘Well, you’re crazy Helen if you don’t think that this [will happen] to you in another week or so.’ So I called my team in, about a week before we canceled school, and said, ‘We need to start planning.'” PUSD’s director of curriculum and professional development, Hill is the architect behind the district’s online education platform that students currently use while schools are shut down. She and her team planned for the scenario her cousins in Shanghai and Italy described: a total lockdown. With COVID-19 devastating other parts of the world, Hill asked her cousins for advice and tips for how to teach students during the pandemic. Soon, Hill and her team began to create a way for students to continue their education from home. They structured the online classroom through three stages. Stage 1 would begin immediately after the dismissal of schools on March 16. Hill and her team created an online platform filled with general learning content in order to give teachers and students time to adjust and prepare for online learning. “It was two to three weeks of material,” said Hill. “We were able to say to our teachers that first Monday morning, ‘We’re all in shock, but you’ve got time. Don’t freak out. You have two weeks for you to design your own custom online classroom.’” In this time, PUSD supplied Google Chromebooks to all students so every student had a device to view the online platform. After the two weeks, plus the one-week spring break on April 6, Stage 2 began as teachers implemented their own content. They posted their lessons online through videos and interacted with their students via discussion and assignments in the online classrooms. Once teachers and students were eased into the online classrooms, PUSD began Stage 3 on April 20. Teachers and students would now meet via webcam. Different Kinds of Learners “It was so abrupt,” Sarah Lazo, who teaches the sixth grade at Marshall Fundamental School, said about the last in-person day of school. “I think when we all left we thought it was going to be for a week, maybe two. I don’t think any of us realized that it was going to go through the end of the school year.” Lazo, like all teachers in Stage 3, has taken over the classroom, teaching her students through the online portal. She hosts a meeting every weekday at 1 p.m., creates video lessons and tries to connect with her students through a screen. “It’s not the same, it’s definitely not the same,” said Lazo. “Everybody has a different family situation right now. Some of them aren’t able to show up at that one o’clock time. And that’s the part I miss the most, because I don’t get that connection with all of them.” She also tries to give her students a chance to connect with one another, ending each class meeting with jokes, riddles and would you rather questions. Lazo acknowledges that the change from in-person to an online classroom has been a hectic change, but she strives to give her students the best education possible. “We always try to clearly explain stuff, but in the classroom you’re able to bring in different experiences because there are so many different types of learners,” said Lazo. “Being on a Chromebook, how do we help those kinesthetic learners or my English Language learners?... I’ve had to figure out some ways to adapt and bring some stuff to help them out.” Lazo has figured out several ways to help her students, one of which is to post videos of her reading textbook assignments to the students so they can follow along with her. In subjects such as history and science Lazo takes time to define some of the harder vocabularies for her students. Lazo admits that while she tries to tend to her own psyche, she spends most of her time ensuring her students and her own children are fine. “Sometimes myself does get pushed to the side a little bit,” she said. “But I do try to kind of refill my cup, if you will, at the end of each day — even if it’s only for a little bit. my time is on my students and my own kids right now.” After talking about the mental toll her job has taken on her, Lazo reflected on her time before teaching when she worked as an executive for Target. “I made a lot more money, but I did not love my job,” said Lazo. “Target felt like work.” However, even in these uncertain times, Lazo finds the sacrifices that she made necessary for the success of not only her own children but her students as well. “I always say every year I have 64 kids or sometimes 72,” said “You get just as invested in their success as you do your own kids.” No Child Left Behind While PUSD has tried to provide children with best education possible during a global pandemic, Hill acknowledges the challenges of remote learning. “None of us are going to penalize kids or parents if kids don’t turn in things [or] if kids didn’t get a chance to work on something,” said Hill. “We already know and are planning for the fall to do a whole lot of differentiation to address [learning] gaps.” While nothing is yet set in stone, Hill hopes to give universal diagnostics to students. The purpose of these tests is to diagnose the level of understanding a child has of a subject. While these tests were common pre-COVID-19, Hill hopes to expand these to all students for at least math, English and language arts. This would also allow faculty to group these students together to address their gaps in learning. Hill also hopes to involve more workshop-type classes for smaller groups to learn. “You know which kids are struggling with the same topic so group them,” said Hill. “Don’t try to work with the 40 kids who don’t all need that. Just work with the seven that do.” Hill describes the process further as teaching a small group with a specific lesson, then allowing them to work independently while the educator teaches another group their specific lesson. The efforts of PUSD faculty and staff have left a positive impression on some parents. “Honestly, I don’t how you’d do you it any differently,” said Laura Diaz Allen, parent engagement director of Pasadena Education Network. “I was very surprised. I thought they were doing a fantastic job. “I can’t complain. I normally do. Normally, I’m that person that’s like ‘what about this? And what about that?’ Now, I don’t know how they could do a better job given the population and the circumstances.” n

id it start with the “goddess pants?” Not exactly. I had been curious about the origins and relationship between the pair of Tibetan-Nepalese businesses on Holly Street — Tibet Nepal House and Tibet Nepal Galleria — as well as the Himalayan Café around the corner on Fair Oaks. How is it that Pasadena has two restaurants specializing in “Himalayan” cuisine, as well as a charming boutique featuring imported clothing, art, books, and jewelry from Tibet and Nepal? Pre-lockdown, I was a lunchtime regular at Tibet Nepal House, where they used to serve a generous and fresh lunch buffet special for $8.99 in the reliably placid, sky-lit dining room. After-lunch always required a stroll next door to the Tibet Nepal Galleria, where over the years I had become friendly with the owner Anjana Sunuwar. Only on Holly Street could I enjoy fresh yak momos and find an obscure paperback copy of “The Dharma” by Kalu Rinpoche. The Galleria was my go-to destination for last-minute, reasonably priced and fairly exotic holiday gifts: earrings, incense, sandalwood soap, tantric statuary, and well, “goddess pants,” the latter being billowy one-size silk-like pantaloons printed with complicated paisley patterns and colors. Last week, my girlfriend suddenly announces, “I need 100 pairs of goddess pants!” [The details of this gambit may be revealed in coming weeks…] No problem… except I quickly discover the storefront once housing the Tibet Nepal Galleria is now a dead-empty shell. Restaurants now may be reduced to take-out and delivery but small local retail stores didn’t even have that option, and I now experience my first, stinging realization of that fact. Next door, at the Tibet Nepal House restaurant, I ask if they know how I might contact Anjana, and after some conference in the back the cheery managing partner Pinku Niraula — masked and gloved — hands me a slip of paper with Anjana’s phone number. Suffice to say, on Saturday afternoon, Anjana — husband and son in tow — arrives on our back porch with three huge bags stuffed with… goddess pants. I try to take the opportunity to quiz her about the history of the store and her relationship to the restaurant. Both venues opened in 2001 with owners related to Anjana. She took over the boutique store in 2007, while Pinku and his partners assumed the helm of the restaurant in 2010. Meanwhile, around the corner and across Colorado on South Fair Oaks, the Himalayan Café opened up in 2011. The respective businesses were unrelated to each other, but the Nepalese owners were all friendly acquaintances. Now, about those momos … “Himalayan” cuisine is a loose amalgam of Tibetan, Nepalese and north Indian cookery and influence. The Himalayan Café — with two other outlets in San Dimas and Baldwin Park — trends more sharply to traditional north Indian fare, including a menu section for Biryani rice dishes. When it comes to regional authenticity, Tibet Nepal House delivers the goods. The menu here features a variety of dishes featuring yak meat, which is sourced fresh from a farm in Colorado, according to Pinku. Yak meat is both central and peculiar to the Tibetan diet. The Vajrayana sect of Buddhism originated in Tibet without observing the traditional tenet of vegetarianism. On the cold and arid Tibetan plateau, yak meat provided the only reliable source of protein and remains a notable
and exceptional staple there. Likewise, it provides an alternative to beef for carnivorous but otherwise observant Hindus. At Tibet Nepal House, both yak chili and yak stew can be found on the menu, as well as their yak momos, which are delicate, folded stuffed dumplings. Other distinct regional preparations on the menu include Nepalese sekuwa dishes as well as Tibetan thukpa and phing. Sekuwa is a Nepalese spice blend rub and marinade used on grilled meat and vegetables before open-fire grilling. Thukpa is a popular noodle soup from eastern Tibet, and phing are transparent glass noodles made from mung bean starch. If you are an international dumpling freak like me, a familiarity with Tibetan momos is a must. Typically served steamed, momos can come in a variety of sizes and shapes with no prescribed crimping pattern. At Tibet Nepal House, they are square with the corners folded into the center of the stuffing, offered in vegetable and chicken preps as well as the yak. As appetizers, the vegetable, chicken and yak momos are $8.99, $9.99 and $10.99 respectively. A dinner-sized portion of yak momos is priced at $15.99. The dumplings are served with a house-made Achaar or dipping sauce. At Himalayan Café, momos are also featured but only with chicken or vegetable fillings. A combination plate with both is available for $12. Here, the vegetable momos are small and round with circular crimping, while the chicken momos appear to be standard Chinese-style crescents (and likely taken straight from a freezer bag). It’s really not a competition and I’ve never really met a bad dumpling, but go to Tibet Nepal House if you want some honest Himalayan authenticity. On that note, as I summon the temerity to again sample some local restaurant takeout offerings, I am inevitably drawn back to places like Tibet Nepal House, where I was once a reliable regular. Stand by your old standbys is my advice and you don’t need me to tell you where to go. Every place in town is doing less than 50 percent of their usual business, and most have had to layoff staff. Try to protect the places you love. As for the goddess pants that drew me back to Holly Street, Anjana still has some left and you can find them and many other fascinating Nepalese and Tibetan curios via her Instagram site. Again, try to protect the places you love! 05.28.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 9
• ARTS & CULTURE • THE 2020 ‘VIOLYMPICS’ LA PHILHARMONIC VIOLINIST NATHAN COLE LAUNCHES VIRTUAL TRAINING EVENTS BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI
T
he COVID-19 pandemic has forced musicians to quickly digitize their professions and supplement their incomes. For some, it’s new. For Los Angeles Philharmonic First Associate Concertmaster Nathan Cole, the digital transformation is under way. On June 1, Cole will launch The Violympics, a series of six two-week training events that will give advanced violinists and violists the tools to advance their art. Cole will mentor participants in the program, which will explore crucial fundamentals in a fun format while building an online global community of musicians. Violympics will culminate in a challenge piece that will bring everyone together through performance (virtually). “It started as a way to help professional violinists and violists organize and practice during the summer,” said the Pasadena resident. “Our seasons tend to go like the school year. In the summer, it’s difficult to find and keep that same routine, either because you have fewer performances or you’re spread out in different places. “I came up with The Violympics to run alongside the real Olympics in Tokyo,” said Cole, who’s married to the LA Philharmonic’s assistant concert master, Akiko Tarumoto. “When everything went nuts in March, including the cancellation of the Olympics, I thought I’d still keep these going.” The Lexington, Kentucky native comes from a family of musicians and educators. His parents were flute teachers, as was his paternal grandfather. Cole picked up the violin at age 4; he’s now 42. “I can’t really remember a time before I was playing violin,” he said. “I love performing. That’s what I grew up wanting to do, but I did find starting about 20 years ago that I loved teaching, too. I used to teach at a few different schools. “I left all of them except the Colburn Conservatory, which is across from 10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 05.28.20
Disney Hall, where I work with the LA Philharmonic. I stopped all the other teaching. I wanted to make time for my online program.” The Violympics is an extension of an online teaching platform that began over a decade ago, when Cole started posting instructional videos on YouTube. Expecting to attract maybe 25 to 50 people, he instead quickly had an online student base in the thousands. He realized there were not many solutions for advanced training online, so he refined his offerings over the years to focus on this niche. More than 3,000 violinists and violists of all ages and capabilities from all over the world, from Argentina to Israel, registered for the Violympic Trials, a one-week introductory experience that preceded the Violympics. This 12-week program costs $797. Cole called it a nice alternative to summer schools or festivals that have been shuttered due to COVID-19. For more information, visit natesviolin.com. “I found the best way to help people is online and in-person,” he said. “When people think about or talk about teaching online or learning online, they’re focused on the negatives, what they’re missing out on. “There are some limitations and drawbacks. In my high-level virtuoso master course, I can start everyone with videos I’ve already made and learning material. This way, we don’t have to waste a lot of that valuable one-onone time going over things they could have learned on their own time. You save that one-one-one time — which is the hardest to schedule — to really just work on the issues that that person has.” Cole added his program is a nice way to fill the time during the pandemic. “I miss performing for sure,” he said. “I have that fear if I don’t do it for a while, my skills are going to go away. This is as much motivation for me to keep me sharp for when we do return to the stage.” n

‘Calling All Musicians’
MUSIC AS MEDICINE, OPERATING UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF KECK MEDICINE OF USC’S CARE FOR THE CAREGIVER PROGRAM, SUPPORTS STRESSED HEALTH CARE WORKERS WITH PERSONALIZED MESSAGES AND VIDEO PERFORMANCES FROM AREA MUSICIANS Owen Dara
T
here are times when even healers need healing. This is one of them. Music as Medicine is a new initiative designed specifically to offer such healing to health care and frontline workers battling physical and emotional fatigue, fear, stress, and/or isolation from family during the coronavirus pandemic. It operates under the umbrella of Keck Medicine of USC’s recently launched Care for the Caregiver program, which addresses foundational issues such as safe shelter and having someone to talk with honestly. Approaching workers’ diverse needs from a different angle, Music as Medicine provides comfort and inspiration. The initiative developed out of brainstorming sessions held to determine what could be done to further support employees at Keck and Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center — both located on USC’s Health Sciences campus in downtown LA — as well as Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale, USC Care clinics, and USC’s student health centers. Sierra Madre resident Lauren Hoerchner, a music-loving senior director for risk management at Keck Medicine of USC, was tapped to coordinate, and a “Calling All Musicians” flyer soon began making the rounds soliciting two- to five-minute videos to be uploaded to a secure Keck intranet site. Each one opens with an encouraging message for health care workers and ends with a song or two. Students at USC Thornton School of Music were the first to respond, including second-year classical guitarist Francesca Boerio and piano performance major Shelby Wong, the daughter of health care professionals. Hoerchner says they just received another set of Thornton videos directed at children that can be used by Keck employees and their spouses with their families. “It’s really become a magical venue to create a community sense and involve musicians that are also struggling, in a different way,” Hoerchner notes, referring to how many artists are home without work since the pandemic shutdown canceled their gigs. “They can provide their talents to people who really are appreciative and can find some joy in that. We’ve had some messages — ‘Hey, I know it’s hard, hang in there,’ or a message of gratitude — that bring smiles to employees’ faces, knowing that they’re able to continue this fight. The song either directly relates to the musician’s message or it’s uplifting.” Irish-born, Pasadena-based songwriter and comedian Owen Dara wrote a song about COVID-19. Sierra Madre rocker Joe Normal responded to the call as well. Members of the LA Opera dedicated a Mother’s Day concert to health care workers, and three opera singers also offered “their amazing voices,” Hoerchner says, singing various pieces. Carly Rae Jepsen, area guitarist Darryl Marini, keyboardist Rees Finley, jazz-rock veteran Jim Wright, and the USC Marching Band are among the other artists who have contributed. So far submissions have been mainly classical, although three musicians are planning to collaborate on a Beatles medley. Hoerchner says they’re “looking for anything. We just want to keep the intranet site constantly updated with new, fresh material so people can go back for more music therapy.” Clicking on a Care for the Caregiver button on the intranet site, accessible only to Keck Medicine of USC employees, directs them to that program’s resources for housing, mental health and emotional well-being. That includes the Music as Medicine page, where videos are housed and organized by genre. While Music as Medicine cannot post videos online, artists have “full rein” to post them to their social media accounts, Hoerchner says. “We can track views and likes, kind of like on Instagram. If the musician feels comfortable posting on social media and they tag us, they get traffic from us and we get traffic from them.” She adds that the videos are also being integrated into staff and leadership meetings to spark energy and help everyone “reflect and connect together.” “Just having this music space to provide moments for our employees,” she says, “whether they’re on the frontlines and really feeling the burn, or some are remote and also feeling loneliness — it’s something we all can get around. You’re in health care for a reason, and it’s been a wonderful initiative to set up. “We’re actually asking musicians on the [submission] form if, after the COVID-19 crisis, they’re interested in working with us in other ways, maybe directly with just patients. Our employees could really use a musical hug, as it were; that’s our scope right now. But we would love to continue the efforts even after COVID-19 with the new friends we’ve made in the musician world.” Musicians who would like to participate in the Music as Medicine program should email a request for a submission form to Hoerchner at lauren.hoerchner@med.usc.edu with the subject heading “Music as Medicine entry.” All genres are welcome, as long as they are family-friendly. n
