eaders throughout Pasadena are reflecting on the achievements of District 3 Councilmember John J. Kennedy, who died July 21. “Today, Pasadena lost an amazing advocate,” said Councilmember Tyron Hampton. “The passing of John J. Kennedy comes as a shock, and it is a tremendous loss. … John was a fighter. Every day he worked for the betterment of the people of his district, and for the people of Pasadena. Our city is definitely a better place because of John. Everything he did for the community was done with the greatest care and to the highest caliber.” Born and raised in Pasadena, Kennedy dedicated his life’s work to serving his home community at a young age. He served as student body president at Blair High School and student senator at the University of Southern California, where he earned dual degrees in international relations and economics. He earned a juris doctor degree from Howard University School of Law and was the youngest person to have served as president of the Pasadena branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). “His work as a member and president of the NAACP was historic,” Mayor Victor Gordo said. “The inspiration that people should find in his life is his dedication and love for the city of Pasadena, and his personal willingness to sacrifice his own time, and in many ways his own life, to ensure that our city was better, not just for residents living in Pasadena today, but for residents that had once lived in Pasadena … and always with an eye to the future, to future residents of Pasadena to ensure that they too would have an opportunity to live here and be successful members of our beloved city.” During his tenure on the city council, Kennedy was chair of the public safety committee, served on the finance committee and was one of three city representatives to the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority. In 2013, he became the councilmember for District 3. “John was a very talented and versatile individual, and that’s why he was so effective as a member of the city council representing the residents of this city and beyond,” Mayor Gordo recalled. “At times people ask me, ‘What should I look for when I’m looking to elect a member of the council?’ And my answer is always this: ‘Sure they should have a basic understanding of our city and have a procedural understanding of how things get done,’ but those things and others are not the qualities that I look for. Those are basics. What I look for and what distinguishes candidates in my mind is ‘does an individual love this city and the people of this city?’ And when I think of John Kennedy, the answer is resounding ‘yes.’” Alongside his work with the city council, Kennedy also served on a variety of local boards, including the Community Health Alliance of Pasadena, the Pasadena Police Foundation, the Tom Bradley Legacy Foundation at UCLA and the ChapCare board of directors. He was an ardent supporter of affordable housing, health care access for underserved communities, paying workers a livable wage and hiring locally. “John was passionate for the people, places and causes that he held near to his heart,” ChapCare CEO Margaret B. Martinez said. “Northwest Pasadena and health care access for underserved, at risk populations were just a few of the many topics that we discussed at length. He supported ChapCare’s medical and other clinical services

John J. Kennedy as a fundamental resource for all residents of Pasadena. He saw this as a way that impacted people and neighborhoods could achieve their best quality of life and build stronger communities.” There will be a public service held for Kennedy from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, in Centennial Square at the front of city hall. At the request of Kennedy’s family, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a scholarship fund held in the name of the Kennedy family at the Pasadena Community Foundation. “John was a compassionate, caring and loving soul,” Hampton said. “My prayers go out to the Kennedy family, to the residents of District 3 and to the city of Pasadena. John Kennedy’s work here on earth is done, but his work and legacy will continue on through all of us. “In memory of John, let us always remember that we are one Pasadena. Let’s continue to work together to build a greater community.”

Since 1937, the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena’s mission has been to provide children with a safe space for personal development and growth.

hen the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena was founded in 1937, it was built as a safe and nurturing space for the community’s children. The club has since evolved into a network of two main clubhouses and two school-site locations with programs that foster both personal growth and social skills, sites that became havens for families throughout the San Gabriel Valley during the pandemic. In a celebration of 85 years of service to their surrounding communities, the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena has begun its year-long anniversary commemoration with a “birthday party” at the Mackenzie-Scott Clubhouse on Friday, Aug. 5. “It’s very family oriented, so there’s something for all ages,” said Lisa Cavelier, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena. “It’s going to be just a big party, if you will.”

The celebration will run from 4 to 7 p.m. and feature food trucks, backpack giveaways, games and a kids’ basketball clinic with basketball street legend Sik Wit It. While entry to the event is free, food and drinks will be available for purchase from Lupita’s Tacos and Kona Ice trucks. The club will also be offering tours of the newly renovated clubhouse, which was demolished on Dec. 17 and underwent an $800,000 interior remodel. “We’re really proud of that,” Cavelier said. “It was a massive undertaking and some of us who were very involved in it are really exhausted, but it’s really beautiful.” Cavelier explained that over the last three and a half years, the club has invested nearly $2 million in their facilities so the buildings would be “worthy of the kids and staff coming into them.”

GAURAV BOBBY KALRA | ATTORNEY AT LAW “I want them walking into a beautiful facility that says, ‘Yes, this is where you belong and we’re here for you,’” Cavelier said. As the facilities of the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena have evolved over the last 85 years, so too has their list of programs offered to their participants. The club has served more than 2,000 youth, ages 6 to 18, annually, with its mission to fill the gap between school and home. In recent years, Cavelier explained the club has focused on three core pillars for their programming: academic success, healthy lifestyles, and good character and leadership. The programs at the club are meant to build upon these pillars while balancing fun and the “serious business of youth development.” From the club’s four locations, which are the Slavik branch on East Del Mar Boulevard, the Mackenzie-Scott branch on North Fair Oaks Avenue and two school-site clubhouses on the Odyssey Charter Schools’ campuses in Pasadena and Altadena, it runs out-of-school programs for students in the Pasadena Unified School District. Throughout the afternoon, the programs include hour-long activities like “power hour,” allowing students time to work on homework with access to a mentor when they need additional help. Other programs include a fitness hour in the gym and “image makers,” where the students can take photographs and learn how to digitally adjust and display them. “What we found is that it’s one thing for kids to come here and play and have fun, and that’s phenomenal, but we also are a very strong partner in these kids’ lives in helping them have academic success and in helping them to make healthy choices,” Cavelier said. “They’re learning math and doing all kinds of other things and they don’t even know it because it’s all put together as fun. The impact that we make, we see with the report cards that we gather a couple of times a year, we hear from families, we hear from teachers.” When the school district closed at the start of the pandemic, the Boys & Girls Club shut its doors too. For Cavelier, it was a heartbreaking situation. “We agreed that there’s no way we were going to stay closed, that we were going to reopen as fast as we could,” she said. “I was hearing from parents by May that were saying, ‘I’m being asked to come back to work, and I have no safe place for my kids.’ I’ll never forget a conversation with a mom. I was saying, ‘Well, what are you going to do?’ ‘Well, I’m going to leave them with my neighbor.’ ‘Do you know your neighbor?’ ‘No, not really. Not that well.’ … I’m a CEO and I’m a mom, and so that comes out in me occasionally, like all the time. I just said, ‘Wow, we have to do more.’” The Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena reopened on June 15, 2020. They were only closed for approximately three months. “We were almost in hazmat suits,” Cavelier explained with a laugh. “We were all just sort of terrified, but we filled up one whole building with about 80 kids all separated out in groups, washing our hands every two minutes, masked and all the above. “We had a wonderful summer session, and it gave kids a chance to stay connected and socialize because they’d been isolated for a couple of months. And in many cases, isolated and terrified watching their families get sick, watching their families lose jobs, trying to get food.” For the 2021 school year, when students were learning from home, the club opened both of their main buildings and held after-school and full-day programs so parents could bring their children from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for supervised remote learning. “It was a whole new model for us, but we were trying to pivot to be part of the solution,” Cavelier said. “Everything we do here is taking the lead from what families, parents and caregivers need and want. … We survived, and the club thrived.” While the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena’s 85th anniversary celebration may serve as a moment to reflect upon the club’s growth since its founding and perseverance through the hardships of recent years, Cavelier expressed excitement for the future and dreams of opening a center for teenagers in the community as well. “These kids who’ve been through a lot, they’re all growing into teens now,” Cavelier said. “I think we need to come around them to prepare them for adulthood in a much deeper, more profound way. “The club’s just got a great trajectory ahead. We’ve got more kids. We’ve doubled our footprint. We’re on two school sites now as well as our two big buildings. … Our future is bright.”

here has been an ongoing nationwide debate about how people experiencing brain-related illnesses such as dementia are cared for in memory care facilities across the country as experts try to find a balance between providing safety and autonomy for their residents. In Pasadena, MorningStar Senior Living has long been at the forefront of providing independent and assisted living to seniors, and recently announced the opening of its new luxury memory care unit. The Denver-based company’s major renovation at 951 South Fair Oaks Avenue will include a complete redesign on the second floor to accommodate the needs of those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia as well as a secure memory care neighborhood featuring 28 studio and one-bedroom apartments together with spacious common areas and a terrace garden. “We recognize the pressing need for memory care and the desire for seniors to remain in the neighborhoods they love,” MorningStar founder and CEO Ken Jaeger said. “The renovation reflects our substantial experience in taking senior living innovation to the next level.” MorningStar’s philosophy and programming in dementia care is branded under the name, “Lavender Sky.” Through Lavender Sky, MorningStar’s memory care takes a holistic, personalized approach rooted in the individual history of each resident. MorningStar will also offer “It’s Never 2 Late,” an engagement technology that combines touchscreen with picture-based software. From BrainWise menus to music and pet therapies, cultural sensitivities to proprietary dementia training for every team member, MorningStar aspires to be a national leader in dementia care. “Our aim is to bring insight and understanding to all those who may interact with the memory-impaired, not only residents but any of the 50 million worldwide who are walking the journey of dementia,” shared, Rebecca Martin, vice president of Memory Care. Other renovated spaces at MorningStar of Pasadena include an enlarged dining room, private dining room, bistro and bar with courtyard, art studio, club room, music room, theatre, salon, library and fitness center. The project encompasses the refurbishing of 144 resident suites while boasting Sky Terraces with views of South Pasadena and the San Gabriel Mountains. MorningStar is also planning a 2025 expansion building next door which will exclusively offer independent living. “What dramatic proof of our passion to serve Pasadena’s seniors,” executive director Kevin Taliaferro said. “We welcome you into these refreshed and modernized spaces as you experience the warmth of the MorningStar culture.”

Christmas Con brings holiday warmth to August By Laura Latzko Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

ometimes, Christmas in December just isn’t enough. Christmas Con brings the holiday spirit to Pasadena Convention Center from Friday, Aug. 5, to Sunday, Aug. 7, courtesy of That’s 4 Entertainment. “There’s this massive following for these (Hallmark) movies, and there was nowhere for people to come together and meet these celebrities and celebrate them and their work,” cofounder Christina Figliolia said. “That’s why we decided, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s put it together.’” “Mean Girls” cast members Lacey Chabert and Jonathan Bennett will emcee. Chabert’s resume also includes lending her voice to Meg Griffin on “Family Guy,” Eliza Thornberry in “The Wild Thornberrys” franchise and the title character in the animated film “Anastasia.” She has appeared in “All My Children,” “Lost in Space,” “Party of Five,” “Not Another Teen Movie” and “Black Christmas.” Bennett also played Ethan on the TV show “Awkward,” and the title character in “Van Wilder: Freshman Year.” During the convention, Bennett will host the Ugly Sweater Showdown on Saturday, Aug. 6, and the Battle of the Christmas Stars Family Game Night on Sunday, Aug. 7. The event offers Christmas-themed decorations, interactive activities; Q&A panels with celebrity guests; a DJ spinning Christmas music; a live art demonstration; Santa appearances in traditional holiday- and Christmas-in-July-themed outfits; a concert with Alicia Witt (who’s been dubbed the queen of holiday movies) and Paul Greene; a roaming caroling group; vendors selling holiday-themed and gift items; and a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony. With VIP passes, guests receive frontof-the-line access to celebrity photo ops and autograph sessions, a VIP tote bag with an exclusive swag item, reserved seating at celebrity panels and a three-day pass to the event.

Wide-ranging event A nod to horror and comic book conventions, Christmas Con started in New Jersey and it was set to expand to Pasadena in 2020 before the pandemic hit. With decorations by Bob Pranga and Debi Staron from Dr. Christmas, it makes its Pasadena debut this weekend.

“We wanted to take things we liked from all the different conventions that we have been to and make our own little niche, where it is a convention but has a different personality to it,” Figliolia said. “Especially with Christmas Con, it has more of that holiday town feel, where everyone knows each other, and there’s families.” Figliolia and cofounder Liliana Kligman said they wanted to bring a mixture classic and new Christmas traditions to the event. Joining Greene and Witt as guests this year are Mario Lopez, Jack Wagner, Jackeé Harry, Jesse Metcalfe, Andrew Walker, Nikki Deloach, Erin Cahill, Danica McKellar, Drew Seeley, Cindy Busby, Sarah Drew, Jen Lilley, Torrey Devitto, Melissa Claire Egan, Wes Brown and Brennan Elliott. Barbara Eden from “I Dream of Jeannie” will attend and have a themed tree in her booth. McKellar and Alonso Duralde, author and TheWrap editor, will share hosting duties during the Christmas Trivia Throwdown. During the trivia contest, celebrity guests and audience members compete for prizes. On the Friday of the convention, there will be a screening of Chabert’s new Hallmark movie “Groundswell” along with a preshow Q&A with the actress. Figliolia said fan input is considered when celebrities are booked for the shows. “We have our core celebrity guests that have been with us since day one when we came up with this idea in 2019,” Figliolia said. “And they are always fan favorites. And we really listen to the fans. They always message us, DM us and email us of people they want to see. We really let them play a big part in who we bring to the show.” Figliolia said during the first convention in New Jersey, she saw how meaningful Hallmark holiday movies can be for fans. “We had people coming up to us crying, thanking us for doing this because these movies got them through a hard Christmas or a difficult time in their lives,” Figliolia said. “They were able to meet the celebrity guest and explain that to them. We didn’t expect how much it was going to mean to them to meet these celebrity guests and vice versa. The celebrity guests were coming to us with tears in their eyes at how much it meant to them to hear these stories. That’s really the vibe. It’s got this really amazing heart to the show.”

Christmas Con WHEN: 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7 WHERE: Pasadena Convention Center, 300 E. Green Street, Pasadena. The Pasadena Bead and Design show features artisans and merchants from Friday, Aug. 5, to Sunday, Aug. 7.

Bead show shines with artwork, materials eadwork is an intricate process that involves hours of work. The Pasadena Bead and Design Show features artisans as well as merchants from Friday, Aug. 5, to Sunday, Aug. 7, at the Hilton Pasadena Hotel. Founded in 2008, the Pasadena Bead and Design Show is one of Garan-Beadagio’s longest-running shows. The company was founded in 2004 by Anna Johnson, a self-taught glass beadmaker and jeweler and traveling merchant, and her daughter Casey Kennerson, who serves as show manager. Kennerson said she and her mother started their own show out of need. “I grew up in the business,” Kennerson said. “My mom and I made jewelry and wholesaled gems and beads for years before we did the shows. We were looking for an event we would want to go to and sell at, and there really wasn’t that opportunity. So, that’s why we started with this. “She always brought me in and included me. Definitely doing that makes you a strong businesswoman right from the start.” The shows are multigenerational family affairs. Kennerson’s sister also goes to shows, and both sisters bring along their daughters. “They are definitely going to learn young. It’s great that it’s woman-run, and we get to show them how it’s done,” Kennerson said. The Pasadena show will feature over 200 artisans, wholesalers and merchants in the 30,000-square-foot space. They will sell items such as handcrafted beads, jewelry, hand-dyed silks, upcycled clothing, gemstones and original artwork. Kennerson said longtime vendors are like family. The vendors being slightly different takes on the products. “They all have their own character,” Kennerson said. The event provides an intimate, relaxing atmosphere where guests have room to browse and talk with artisans in more detail about their work. “They are always happy to tell the story of the work and how it’s made,” Kennerson said. Coming out of the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, patrons have been excited to go to shows again in person. “I love just being able to go and see everyone, especially in this post-COVID age, where so much is in the digital world. It’s great to be able to still connect and get that human interaction,” Kennerson said. Kennerson has found many people recently started hobbies such as jewelry making while they were at home during COVID-19. Many of individuals started to sell their artwork or jewelry online. “A lot of people are still working from home, so they had time to start their own business up,” Kennerson said. Taught by artisans and beadmakers, daily workshops will be offered in artforms such as bead making, chainmaille, wirework, enameling, metalworking, Kumihimo

braiding, crystal setting, hand knotting and polymer clay. The workshops are geared toward different skill levels. Many vendors, including Cathi Milligan from The Glass Studio, will be teaching classes. She will offer instruction on how to make wire wrap bracelets. As an artist, Milligan regularly educates others through The Glass Studio, which is located in a makerspace in Downtown LA. The studio has classes in artforms such as wire wrap bracelets and rings, glass bead making, macrame wall hangings, glass blowing, fused-glass pendants, hollow and disk beads, silver glass bead making and sacred heart glass casting. The studio also sells supplies and original artwork. Milligan specializes in glass art and jewelry but also is skilled in artforms such as macrame. She has a YouTube channel called The Creative Space, where she does how-to videos. The artist has had her own business for 12 years but has been working with beads for most of her life and making her own glass beads for about 30 years. She became interested in making beads from lapidary, ornament and beadmaking magazines of the day and decided to take a class. Milligan started making beads for herself for her own work but eventually branched off into making and selling them to others. Recently, she has been making larger-sized beads using glass-blowing techniques and has been incorporating them into items such as chandeliers and decorative necklaces for walls. “I’ve been doing that for about 8 years. I laugh because right when I started blowing glass, I was burnt out from regular bead-making. But as soon as I started blowing, I wanted to make really big beads,” Milligan said. At the bead and design show, Milligan will have smaller and larger-sized beads in different colors and shapes, including heart-shaped and round beads and beads with dots or scrollwork. She will also sell handmade jewelry, drinking glasses, plates and bowls. “When people come to my table, they see things that they don’t see at other tables. … My customers, when they come in, they are looking for something different. That’s why they come to me,” Milligan said.

icole Lalagüe was working her dream job in wine sales, helping “amazing” restaurants build their programs, all while living in Pasadena. “I loved my job, and I loved living in Pasadena,” she said. That is until 2019, when she was rear-ended on the 210 Freeway, leaving a 10-millimeter lumbar spine herniation. “I had never been in pain that didn’t go away,” she recalls. “I had surgery and then it herniated again.” Lalagüe just couldn’t regularly step into a car again, raising the odds of a crash happening again and being unable to find comfort. “I tried to find work for myself, but with that second discectomy, I couldn’t get back to that old way of working,” she said. “I had to resign from a job I loved and couldn’t find a job that suited my needs.” After lengthy planning, Lalagüe opened the doors to Pasadena Wine Shop, in the heart of historic Green Street Village district, in the spring. Open 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday, Pasadena Wine Shop offers private shopping appointments for individuals or small groups. “I realized in this area there were no indie wine shops,” she said. “This one is less than a mile from my home. People are coming in. It’s been my dream.” In the 600-square-foot Pasadena Wine Shop, the Bungalow Heaven resident carries 300 selections of wine she hand-picked from around the world. IPAs, sours and beer are on the shelves, too. “We focus on family-owned, small producers,” she said. “A lot of our wines are classic wines whom I know personally and visited the properties myself. There’s a real intimacy with the wines I have.” She likens finding a customer’s perfect wine to being a sleuth. “I ask them what they like, what they want to drink, and then I play Sherlock Holmes and try to find the wine for them,” she said with a laugh. “It doesn’t matter what I like or what I think is good. I match people to a wine they can’t find elsewhere. That’s what keeps them coming back.” Long road Lalagüe is well versed in the world of wine. The California native learned about the F&B industry at restaurants in her early 20s. “It’s history. It’s geography. It’s geology. It’s people. It’s social,” she said. “I think it’s a real jack-of-all-trades type of industry. If you’re curious about a lot of different things, wine will scratch that learning itch. It’s always changing, too. Every year is

different with new styles, new producers.” Her resume includes stints as a sommelier with the Thomas Keller Restaurant Group and managing sales and distribution locally for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Leflaive. She lived in Bordeaux for six months and, like her father, is a French citizen. In a previous position, she traveled regularly to California wine country. “I was granted citizenship because my father was born in France,” she said. “That’s part of what got me into wine. It’s something my dad always enjoyed, and it was really romantic to me.” After the crash, she wasn’t sure if she would find a new calling. Pasadena Wine Shop is a mélange of past and present worlds. “It’s been so nice to work again. I didn’t know I would work again,” she said. She recalls trying to return to work but, although mentally stimulated, physically she just couldn’t do it. “It’s weird navigating my new world with pain. I lay down and work on the website when people aren’t here. I walk through the world of wine with them when customers are here. “Physically, I feel the best I have in years. After a three-month break from work, I was mentally stir crazy. Working in sales, you’re always proactive. You’re making things happen.” Pasadena Wine Shop is the only female-founded wine shop in the San Gabriel Valley. “It’s just me and Wells Fargo,” she quipped. “It’s just me taking a huge risk. I don’t have a huge investor. It’s just me asking questions of city hall every day.” Giving back to the city is pleasing to the Bungalow Heaven resident. “The thing I love the most about the shop is I get to know so many people in the community,” she said. “Being able to have that human interaction keeps people coming back. We launched our online store a few weeks ago. But customers usually come into the shop so they can explore. People are using the online store to see what we have. It’s a passion for both of us.”

• ARTS & CULTURE • Singer Phoebe Bridgers has fond memories of home By Xavier Omar Otero Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

Singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers will perform in Pasadena on Sunday, Aug. 28.

n no time, Phoebe Bridgers has gone from busking at the Pasadena Farmers Market for tips to headlining major music festivals around the world. From the outset, with the release of 2017’s “Stranger in the Alps” — a diary of loneliness and heartbreak — the Pasadena native’s nuanced storytelling set a groundswell into motion. Bridgers’ ability to make intimacies feel universal is her strong suit. “My favorite music, like ‘You Missed My Heart’ by Mark Kozelek, has this quality about it that doesn’t quite make sense,” she said from Germany, where she was on tour. Lauded by Rolling Stone as “one of the year’s best albums,” her sophomore album 2020’s “Punisher” — which received four Grammy nominations — proved to be a launch pad that would propel Bridgers afar. She’s on tour, with stops in Amsterdam, London, Montreux, Paris, São Paulo, Mexico City, Vancouver and back to her hometown for This Ain’t No Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 28, at Brookside at the Rose Bowl. Bridgers was born in Pasadena in 1994. Her father worked in construction while her mother held various jobs. Bridgers’ parents divorced when she was 19. “I mean, the Pasadena part was great,” she said. “I went to preschool in Sierra Madre. I graduated from Sequoyah Middle School. It was a gorgeous place to grow up.” Her lyrics to “Garden Song” reference life in Pasadena. “I always went to the Rose Bowl as a little kid. That was pretty cool,” she reminisced. “We got really good tickets the year that it rained really hard.” Her interest in music goes back as far as she can remember. Influenced by her parents’ record collection, her musical heroes then were “everybody my parents listened to: Tom Waits, Nina Simone, Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell.” Her music-loving mom encouraged her to pursue her passion. “I started out with piano lessons, which I hated. Then I moved to guitar pretty quick,” she said. Her first band formed while attending Sequoyah. “I don’t think we had a name. We did a lot of covers,” Bridgers recalled fondly. “We’d play at Pinocchio’s Pizza on Lake Avenue.” Another one of her early bands, Phoebe & the He-Men, was inspired by the most

powerful man in the universe. “Because I liked ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’ TV show. We played Battle of the Bands quite a bit.” Once bitten by the music bug, for Bridgers there was no other course of action. “I really wanted to go to LACHSA (Los Angeles County High School for the Arts),” she said. “By sixth and seventh grade I was already thinking about my application there.” At LACHSA she studied vocal jazz, opera and music technology. Around that time, Fortuna, the Roman goddess of chance, smiled upon her with grace. “When I was 18, I was cast in a commercial, which helped me to take a break from odd jobs and busking while I made my record.” The 2014 commercial for Apple iPhone 5S featured a fresh-faced Bridgers singing the Pixies’ “Gigantic.” Bridgers reflected, “I don’t come from money. So, it gave me the freedom to not have a plan B.” At the end of August, the “Patron Saint of Sadness,” as christened by The Guardian, is scheduled to perform at This Ain’t No Picnic Festival. Excited to perform for a hometown audience, Bridgers enthused, “It’ll be cool. It’s five minutes from my mom’s house. It’s fun to have everybody that you know in one place. … And I learned how to drive in that parking lot.” In addition to living in Pasadena, Bridgers spent time “walking Scott Street, feeling like a stranger,” as she sings in the song. “It’s actually Scott Avenue. It’s in Echo Park,” she clarified. Echo Park — the final home of her musical idol Elliott Smith, and that of Bedrock. LA, a large rehearsal facility a few blocks from Scott Avenue — is where she once shared a practice space with drummer Marshall Vore. It was at Bedrock where the strikingly confessional songs that comprise “Stranger in the Alps” began to coalesce. Throughout her career, Bridgers has lent her voice to causes close to her heart. Recently, she partnered with HomeState: A Texas Kitchen as a participant in its band taco program, bringing music and tacos together in support of neighboring communities, with proceeds donated to local charities. “As of right now, I have not decided what’s going to be in my taco. I’ve been busy on tour,” Bridgers imparted in mid-July. “But I’m sure it’ll be great.” An outspoken advocate for abortion rights, Bridgers took a hard stance during her set at the Glastonbury Festival in England the day Roe v. Wade was overturned. She led the sea of concertgoers in a chant, “(Expletive) the Supreme Court!” “I felt the ruling in my whole body. It was unexpected. I somehow thought it was going to turn around,” Bridgers said. “I had an abortion in October of last year.” After a pause, she reflected, “It’s basic human empathy to be torn apart knowing that it’s going to be marginalized people, people of color, queer people who will be affected most.” Despite being sickened by the conservative faction of a court that seeks to turn back time, Bridgers sees a path forward. “There are a lot of organizations I really love: The Mariposa Fund is a great abortion fund. The Lilith Fund. Planned Parenthood is still doing really good work.” She continued, “For trans rights there is The Ally Coalition and The Trevor Project.” Bridgers is donating a portion of ticket sales from her tour to The Mariposa Fund. “Throwing money and resources at those (organizations) right now is the best that I can do as someone with a platform,” she concluded. “Hopefully, it helps.” On “I Know the End” — a dystopian folk ballad with references to American culture and recent events — Bridgers said, “The billboard said, ‘The end is near.’” When queried, Bridgers ruminated, “I think so. I think it is. I don’t pretend to know when the heat death of the planet is going to happen. Or, if talking politics, I don’t know when we’re going to be under 100% totalitarian rule. “Some of this there is no turning back from,” she said soberly. “But it’s not like hope is dead. There are a lot of really cool people out there, way smarter than the people on the Supreme Court, doing really great work,” she declared. “Hopefully we can overturn the environmental laws that were put into place two weeks ago.” As for her plans, Bridgers is uncertain. “Right now, I love playing live. Maybe next year will come more music. I’m following whatever intrigues me the most. That’s the way that I’ve always been.” True to form, like on “Halloween,” she sings, “There’s a last time for everything. Oh, come on, man. We can be anything.”

Guitar showdown features blues honchos Bob Steshetz/Submitted photo

“S

howdown” suggests an antagonistic cutting contest or fight to the death. But Saturday night’s heavily promoted “guitar showdown” between blues honchos Kirk Fletcher, Delgado Brothers guitarist Joey Delgado and slide maestro Dave Melton is more likely to be a lovefest. “I consider them lifelong friends,” Delgado said cheerily. “I don’t even know how long I’ve known Dave Melton — since the ’90s or ever since we made the scene in the late ’80s.” Emerging from the same creatively fertile East LA scene as Los Lobos (some of whose members attended high school with Delgado’s older brothers), the Delgado Brothers made a splash in 1987 with their self-titled debut album on the Hightone label. It was produced by Dennis Walker, who was riding high at that time for his work on Robert Cray’s breakthrough album “Strong Persuader.” Melton’s slide can be heard on later Delgado Brothers albums — 2005’s “A Brother’s Dream” and 2009’s “Learn to Fly” — and both he and Fletcher have subbed with the Delgados at live shows, thus becoming honorary Delgado Brothers. Fletcher and Melton have also teamed up on occasions when Fletcher was in town. (Having lived in Europe for a time, former Angeleno Fletcher is now based in Nashville.) According to Delgado, Walker reached out to him before his death, asking if he’d be interested in writing some songs together. “For a year and a half we were co-writing songs,” Delgado recalled. “I knew Kirk was going to record two of our songs on his new album and I really didn’t want to bother him because he was going through a lot of moving. But I got a hold of him because (show producer) Cadillac Zack wanted me to do the show with these guys, so we were talking and I said, ‘Man, I’m so excited that you’re doing our songs,’ and he didn’t really understand, and I went, ‘Yeah, I co-wrote the songs with Dennis.’ And he was like, ‘Aw, man, I didn’t know!’” Turns out the intermediary who had passed the songs to Fletcher had neglected to mention Delgado, although the demos were made by Delgado during the pandemic shutdown in his home studio in Monrovia. “The good news is, he’s recorded two of my songs; the bad news is, my name is not on the album,” Delgado said. “He told me the next version will have the correction on it. I’m excited he’s doing them.” Hopefully, they will be among the songs Delgado, Fletcher and Melton jam on Saturday night. Backed by the tough grooves of drummer Jimbo Goodall and bassist/musical director Bobby Tsukamoto, the three anticipate performing for an hour and a half to two hours, round robin-style. “We’ve done it before and the time just flies,” said Delgado, who has also participated in similar “showdown” setups with guitarists Chris Cain, Coco Montoya and Kid Ramos. “It’s so much fun. It’s an amazing community of guitar players and they’re all my buddies. That’s something I dreamed of as a kid — playing with the big boys like this. These guys are all my heroes.”

Glendale club celebrates women and the blues

lues singer Sayed Sabrina generally doesn’t perform free shows. So, when she hits the stage for “Ladies Sing the Blues” on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Therapy at the Roar Room in Glendale, it’ll be special. The evening was inspired by Linda Cooper, whose husband, guitarist Vince White, generally jams at the venues on Wednesday. She wanted to host a night featuring women singing the blues. “She thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be neat to have a women’s blues night where we hear all the songs that we’ve grown up with and learned to love throughout the years?’” Sabrina said. Los Angeles can be a hard town for musicians, especially for women. It’s why she’s excited about performing with the other women lined up for the night, including Christineh Menaskanian, Rachel Rizner, April Henry and Pasadena’s Sharron Moore. “This night will really lift all the females up,” Sabrina said. “There are some really great women who will be singing. It’s sometimes difficult to get a job as a musician when you’re a female so everyone helps their friends out. Sometimes when I’m performing, I’ll have the opportunity to get my own opener and they don’t always want you to have another female. That doesn’t make sense to me. There is always space for more. That’s why we’re having this night which is going to be a fun-filled night with lots of love and energy going around the room.” She’s hoping all the women — and associated musicians — will come together and jam at the end of the night. Sabrina, who has shared stages with B.B. King, Los Lobos, Jimmy Cliff, Dr. John, Leon Russell, The Temptations and The Motels, said people can expect a night full of familiar blues songs. She also plans to perform songs regulars at the club are used to hearing from White and his band. “We have worked together for many years and they’re very dear friends of mine,” Sabrina said. “We’ll probably be playing a lot of Vince White originals and songs off of our ‘Big Boy Blues’ album. We recorded that six years back.” The set will give fans a chance to hear her new album, “Thou Art That,” as well. After a few years of the pandemic, Sabrina has found live music is more appreciated. Venues are filled with people who are hungry for the connection and joy that music brings. “There was such a grand loss on such a huge scale for those of us that have to have that live energy of music and art. It was devastating,” Sabrina said. “Being able to go out into the world again and share that experience with others has been well received.” It’s ironic, considering she worried no one would show up when she scheduled her first gigs back. “It was phenomenal,” Sabrina said. “Everyone was celebratory, and it felt very special, which is what we look forward to every time we perform.” Sabrina spends a lot of time alone writing music, playing on her keyboard, piano, drums and guitars. She said it’s just as much fun to jam with her friends. None of it, though, compares to the thrill of live performance. “There’s nothing like it because there’s this reciprocated joy and appreciation,” Sabrina said. “You are appreciated as the artist and you’re giving joy. There is this great energy connection that is a give and take.”

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (855) 976-3916 or visit this Internet Web site www.auction.com, using the file number assigned to this case 1959370. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction.
