President Trump is a danger to our democracy. Given the overwhelming evidence Mueller presented in his report and testimony, and the willingness of this administration to let foreign powers interfere in our democracy, it’s past time Congress opened a formal impeachment inquiry. No more excuses. No more delays. The Mueller investigation found extensive criminal activity committed by Trump and his team. It resulted in 37 indictments and at least seven convictions or guilty pleas, uncovered over 10 instances of obstruction of justice by Trump himself, and revealed over 100 secret meetings and communications between his campaign and Russian and their cronies. If any other American had obstructed justice as flagrantly as Trump has, they’d be going to jail. Our representative needs to step up now, because doing nothing will only embolden Trump to trample over our democratic norms and to keep breaking the law. Doing nothing sets a dangerous precedent for future presidents. For all of these reasons, it’s time for our representative to voice their support for a formal impeachment inquiry. ~ RUSS ANDERSON PASADENA
PLEASE SHUT UP Debra A. Cohn’s letter (Pasadena Weekly, Aug. 22) proves that some people are allergic to facts. They are not satisfied with two years of the Mueller investigation into “Russian Collusion,” wasting $32 million of taxpayer money but still not fi nding any “collusion.” Now Cohn wants an extremely biased Congress to do the rest of the job and probe suspected “obstruction” with yet another round of the “witch hunt,” and wasting still more of tax dollars. And since when has talking to foreign government leaders and officials become a crime? If so, Obama and John Kerry should also be probed.
The Democrat-controlled Congress ignores the continued insult to the National Anthem and is making “Impeachment” its national song. Some impatient Democrats want to investigate every member of the president’s family, their business dealings, and their accounts, including those of Trump-daughter Tiffany from her college days. Wow! Surely, after the sad Mueller saga, a dozen Democrat and Hillary-supporter attorneys, who assisted in the probe, need another huge job. May I remind Cohn that there are dozens of cases in which top Democrats and sympathetic officials should be jailed? The destruction of thousands of emails, private servers doing government jobs and breaching security, funding phony dossiers to malign Trump, making controversial and anti-national uranium deals with Russia, getting FBI agents to work for Trump’s defeat and destruction, and making top officials conspire to wear wires to record Trump-meetings are just a few. Let’s demand thorough investigation into ALL of these things and punish ALL the culprits. As for Donald Trump, if he is so bad, you can try and punish him in the 2020 elections. Until then, please
shut up and work for national security, job creation, peace and unity and a free and fair election. ~ YATINDRA BHATNAGAR TUJUNGA
STOP EATING ANIMALS This Sept. 1 marked 80 years since Hitler invaded Poland and started World War II. Three years later, he launched the Holocaust that murdered six million European Jews. A key question facing historians is how could an enlightened society that produced our civilization’s greatest philosophers, poets, painters and composers also produce its most notorious mass murderers, along with millions of ordinary upstanding citizens who just went along. Was the Holocaust a peculiarly German phenomenon, or are other enlightened societies capable? How about our own American society? Jewish Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer gave a clear answer when he wrote: “To the animals, all people are Nazis.” Singer’s message is that we are all capable of oppressing the more vulnerable sentient beings in our midst, frequently without even thinking about it. Our own enlightened society has translated the arbitrary Nazi dictum “the Christian lives, the Jew dies” into an equally arbitrary “the dog lives, the pig dies.” Only the victims’ names have been changed. The blissful, self-serving ignorance of the death camps and slaughterhouses in our midst remains. Our very first step on the long road to end all oppression should be to drop animals from our menus. ~ PHIL GARGALIS PASADENA

REACHING THE ‘SUMMIT’
CHILDREN MASTER THEIR LESSONS IN A HANDS-ON, PROJECT-BASED CURRICULUM FOCUSED ON SKILLS AND CRITICAL THINKING
Teacher Lauren Partma and her students
I’m a Pasadena area teacher who’s thrilled about the fi rst day of classes, in part because I teach with a community of caring educators at McKinley School of the Arts, but also because we’ve spent the past few years pushing ourselves as teachers, ensuring our classrooms are high in student engagement and grounded in strong relationships. Our program, Vanguard — powered by the Summit Learning model, a personalized approach to teaching and learning — focuses on providing the right challenges to students so they can learn and grow. Unlike a traditional classroom, Vanguard classes are bustling with energy. On any given day, you’ll fi nd my students engaged in real-world projects, collaborating in small groups, and cheering each other on as they learn new things. As one can imagine, this is a big change from the classroom experience in which a teacher stands at the front of the class and lectures all students at the same time. But the success I am seeing proves that the change is worth it. Our students are curious, self-aware, and have a sense of purpose in middle school. How rare is that? This approach places high but attainable expectations on educators to ensure that every child is mastering what they are learning. With a hands-on projectbased curriculum that is focused on skills and critical thinking, students are being asked to engage in classroom work that is more difficult than passively listening to a lecture and memorizing information. They’re being asked to selfdirect elements of their learning so that they develop lifelong learning habits like self-awareness, resilience and perseverance. I’m proud to share that four years after beginning Vanguard our students are not only meeting but exceeding those expectations. They are in the driver’s seat of their own education. Do they struggle at times to master new concepts or complete challenging projects? Absolutely. As educators, we support our students by providing individualized support on their work through one-on-one mentoring time. During these mentoring sessions, we help students work toward their weekly goals. These oneon-ones give me the opportunity to know my students better. During these checkins, I explain why persevering through struggle helps them become well-rounded adults who can contribute to society with confidence and resilience. Every year on the fi rst day of school I start out by telling my students that this is their year. I tell them that they are in control of their learning and it is OK to make mistakes. It’s how you respond to those mistakes and how you pick yourself back up that matters. I feel so fortunate to fi nally be able to reach each of my students and challenge them on their educational journey. ■ Lauren Partma is a teacher at McKinley School of the Arts. POT WAR DECLARED DISPENSARY APPLICANT WHO WAS TURNED AWAY FILES FEDERAL LAWSUIT CLAIMING THE CITY IGNORED PROVISIONS OF ITS OWN ORDINANCE IN THE CANNABIS APPROVAL PROCESS BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN
T
he owners of a business that was selected to file for a special permit to sell marijuana in Pasadena only to be turned away filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday that claims the city failed to “discharge a mandatory duty” and violated the due process rights of the business. The lawsuit essentially reiterates points spelled out in a claim for damages against the city, which was denied by the City Council shortly after it was filed with the City Clerk’s Office on Aug. 19. In the claim and the lawsuit, owners of The Atrium Group of Westlake Village assert the company has suffered substantial economic damages, including loss of sales and business profits, injury to its business reputation and loss of business opportunity. “On the basis of knowledge and belief, the wrongful actions alleged were committed by David Reyes, Director of Planning, City Manager Steve Mermell, Asst. City Manager Nicholas Rodriguez, City Attorney Michelle Bagneris, Management Analyst IV Guille Nuñez, and other unknown persons working on behalf of the city of Pasadena,” that document states. The lawsuit filed in US District Court names as defendants the city, Mermell, Reyes, Harvest of Pasadena (another applicant based in Arizona), Hinderliter De Llamas and Associates of Brea (a consultant group that reviewed the applications), and does one through 10. In June, The Atrium Group, Harvest of Pasadena, Integral Associates Dena, Tony Fong, Sweetwater Pasadena and MME Pasadena Retail were picked from among 122 applicants vying for permission to sell marijuana in the city. Each applicant was forced to pay the city a $14,000 fee just for the opportunity to apply. The total spent was $1.7 million if each applicant paid the fee. It was unknown who the other applicants were because the city has denied a Public Records Act request filed by the Pasadena Weekly for access to that list.
Several dispensaries that were not picked to move forward in the city’s process have threatened lawsuits. A claim for damages is usually the first step in filing a lawsuit against a government agency. Mermell declined to comment on the claim on Friday. On Wednesday morning, city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said Mermell could not comment on the lawsuit because he is named as a defendant. “Our process is proceeding in accordance with the regulations and the measure approved by voters,” Derderian said, referring to Measure CC, a 2018 city-sponsored ballot initiative that called for six weed dispensaries, but allowing only one in each of the council’s seven districts. The claim and the lawsuit stem from a failed conditional use permit (CUP) application filed by The Atrium Group on June 13 which would have allowed the company to open a dispensary in trendy Old Pasadena, located in City Council District 3. In its CUP application, The Atrium Group informed city officials it planned to operate at 70 W. Union St. However, just one day before Atrium submitted its CUP application, Harvest of Pasadena submitted an application to operate at 169 W. Colorado Blvd. — a vacant building leased seasonally to a Halloween business that’s located on the northeast corner of Pasadena Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, and also located in District 3. Officials with Harvest signed a 10-year lease that will see them pay $55,000 per month, or $660,000 a year. Next year the rent will increase to $726,000. The agreement includes annual rent increases. Another applicant, Sweetwater Pasadena, was also rejected after it applied for a CUP in Old Pasadena. In rejecting The Atrium Group’s application, city officials notified
Even with the recent passage of Measures I and J, ballot initiatives, which raised the local sales tax by three-quarters of a cent in part to help fund the beleaguered Pasadena Unified School District, local schools need more money, according to a recent survey conducted by Los Angeles-based FM3 Research for PUSD. According to the survey, 70 percent of those polled said they believe there is a need for additional funding of public schools, with nearly half of those people calling the need “great.” Between July 30 and Aug. 5, 1,008 “likely voters” were surveyed online, and by landline and cell phones. The district is taking steps to place an $850 million bond measure on the March ballot that would be used for infrastructure projects in the school district. Meanwhile, school officials are discussing the possibility of closing schools due to dropping enrollments. Support for a bond measure received at least 60 percent support from respondents in all seven school board districts, with the strongest support, 77 percent, coming from District 3 in Northwest Pasadena which is represented by Michelle Richardson-Bailey. “I’m hoping the community will get behind it,” Richardson-Bailey told the Pasadena Weekly. “The Measure J funds just scratched the surface. We need so much more.” Measure I passed overwhelmingly in November and increased local sales tax by three-quarters of a cent. The sales tax hike is expected to generate $21 million annually. Measure J allows the PUSD to use up to a third of that amount to improve public schools. In East Altadena, 75 percent of the respondents in District 1 — represented by Kim Kenne — said they supported a bond measure. The lowest support came from District 2, represented by Board member Roy Boulghourjian, where 60 percent of respondents said they support a bond measure. In District 4, which contains Old Pasadena, 72 percent of the respondents said they support a bond measure. Only 65 percent of the respondents in districts 5 and 6 — represented by Central Pasadena’s Elizabeth Pomeroy and Sierra Madre’s Larry Torres, respectively, said they would support the measure, and 67 percent of those surveyed in Northwest Pasadena’s District 7, represented by Scott Phelps, support the idea. — André Coleman

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS PICKS FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT
POT WAR DECLARED CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7
BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN
The League of Women Voters Pasadena Area has selected Pat Coulter as its first African- American president. Coulter succeeds Dorothy Keane and will Pat Coulter preside over her first meeting today, Sept. 5. “She brings a vast wealth of experience in developing people and organizations to their full potential,” Keane said of Coulter. “We are so fortunate to have someone with such an impressive record of improving communities.” Coulter acknowledged Keane’s accomplishment of increasing the membership by 25 percent and said she hopes to “foster even more diversity, equity and inclusion.” The League of Women Voters encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy, education and action, according to its website. Coulter, who previously served as president and CEO of the Urban League of Philadelphia for 13 years, was the first woman to lead that 85-year-old organization. She moved to California in late 2014 and joined the League of Women Voters Pasadena Area the following year. She is senior adviser to the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force of the California League, as well as a member of the organization’s nominating committee. She has served as founding chair of the League’s immigration committee formed in 2017 and president-elect in 2018. According to statement issued by the League’s Pasadena chapter, Coulter also served on numerous commissions, nonprofit boards in Philadelphia and won several awards, including CBS News Radio Women’s Achievement Award. She also is in the Knoxville College Alumni Hall of Fame. Coulter holds a bachelor of science degree in music education from Knoxville College, and a master’s degree in education from the University of Louisville. She completed the Harvard Business School’s Strategic Perspectives in Non-Profit Management program and received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Peirce College in Philadelphia. Prior to heading the Urban League, Coulter worked in business management for career professional services firms, including Lee Hecht Harrison and the executive search firm Salveston Stetson Group. n
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION HUNTINGTON LIBRARY TO BEGIN YEARLONG CENTENNIAL BASH BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN
The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens will hold a special event to kick off its yearlong centennial celebration from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, Sept. 5, at the library, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, The event will be hosted by Huntington Karen R. Lawrence President Karen R. Lawrence, who will highlight plans for both the yearlong celebration and the future. Thursday’s program will also include a panel discussion on some of the big ideas shaping the future, brief presentations by Huntington leaders in each collection area, and a special musical performance interpreting sheet music from the Huntington’s historic collection of the works of early 20th-century composer Harold Bruce Forsythe. Todd Simon and members of his Angel City All-Star Brass Band will provide music at various locations in the gardens from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. According to a 2017 article in the Pasadena Weekly, Henry Huntington, nephew of Collis Huntington, one of the men instrumental in creating the Central Pacific Railroad, came to Pasadena from San Francisco in 1900 with a specific plan in mind — buy up as much land as possible. He purchased his San Marino mansion and amassed “far and away the greatest group of 18th-century British portraits ever owned by any one man,” according to the story. In accordance with Huntington’s will following his death in 1927, the $50 million collection was opened to viewing by the public. After his wife Belle died in 1924, Henry spent the remaining years of his life converting the west wing of his home into a museum dedicated to his wife. The museum, the Arabella D. Huntington Memorial Art Gallery, contained rooms dedicated to the aristocratic French decorative art she had acquired in France following Collis’ death. All told, Henry spent the equivalent of $30 million acquiring art for the museum, which also included a small part of his wife’s extensive collection. n

the group that it would not “further evaluate its application.” However, The Atrium Group claims the city is looking the other way while Harvest of Pasadena violates another condition of the ordinance which bans cannabis dispensaries from operating within 600 feet of a library. Besides only allowing one dispensary per council district, the ordinance mandates dispensaries must be at least 600 feet away from residential neighborhoods, schools, libraries, churches and parks. Plus, dispensaries and cultivators cannot operate within 1,000 feet of each other. The Rudolf Steiner Library is located at 110 Martin Alley, across the street from the Pasadena Weekly offices. The library, which is not visible from either DeLacey Avenue to the east or Pasadena Avenue to the west, is open primarily on the weekends, although some study groups are held there on Tuesdays and the first Monday of every month. According to a map submitted to the city by The Atrium Group’s Jim Townsend, the entry door to the Steiner Library is 470 feet from 169 W. Colorado Blvd., the building from which Harvest of Pasadena will operate. Things got even more hostile after the owners of The Atrium Group claimed that Harvest of Pasadena had turned in an incomplete application because it did not include a complete Taxpayer Protection Act Disclosure Form, failed to list a beneficial owner and a financially interested partner. “It is The Atrium Group’s positon that because Harvest of Pasadena has failed to submit a complete and accurate Taxpayer Disclosure Form, Harvest of Pasadena has not complied with the Master Application requirements,” wrote Townsend. “As a result, the Planning and Development Department must deem Harvest of Pasadena’s application for a conditional use permit incomplete.”
Last month, Mermell and Reyes revealed that the city may only be able to accommodate three cannabis dispensaries due to the city’s ordinance, which imposes strict limits on where cannabis businesses can operate. Over the past two years, a number of dispensaries have been forced to close because they sold cannabis in Pasadena without a license. The Pasadena Weekly has reported on a possible ballot initiative that, if approved, could open the door to any number of marijuana dispensaries desiring to operate in Pasadena. Proponents of The People’s Initiative to Preserve the Existing Operation of Non-Offending Commercial Cannabis Businesses submitted 12,900 signatures to City Clerk Mark Jomsky’s office on July 31. A total of 8,542 valid signatures are needed to qualify for the March ballot. The Los Angeles County Registrar’s Office has until Sept. 12 to verify the signatures. As it stands now, Harvest of Pasadena has been approved to open at the northeast corner of Pasadena Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, Integral Associates will open in the 900 block of East Colorado near the South Lake Avenue corridor in District 7, and Tony Fong, will open a shop in Council District 4, in the 3300 block of East Colorado Boulevard. “Based on these facts, Harvest’s application should never have been accepted by the city for a filing appointment. Regulation VII is clear that the order of applications shall be determined not merely by ‘completeness,’ but also by ‘compliance,’” Townsend wrote. “By failing to comply with the Pasadena Municipal Code, Harvest cannot be rewarded by receiving the privilege of operating the only commercial cannabis business in the city’s famous historical quarter. We ask the city to recognize its error and promptly rectify the problem,” the letter states. n

‘Be Part of the Change You Seek’ VROMAN’S PRESENTS SISTER HELEN PREJEAN IN CONVERSATION WITH REV. MIKE KINMAN ABOUT HER NEW BOOK AND SPIRITUAL JOURNEY AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH SATURDAY NIGHT BY BLISS BOWEN
PHOTO: Scott Langley
I
n her new book “River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey,” Sister Helen Prejean chronicles her childhood as a chatty, smart, competitive daughter in a comfortably situated family in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and her path to joining the Sisters of St. Joseph at age 18. It’s a thought-provoking narrative that reflects America’s shifting social mores after WWII, told with compassion and good humor. “God, save me from being a ‘do-gooder’ nun,” she writes at one point — a wisecrack that might surprise those only familiar with her as the death penalty-protesting nun who wrote “Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States,” the 1993 bestseller subsequently adapted into a widely heralded 1995 fi lm and a 2000 opera. Now 80, Sister Helen recounts falling in love with a priest while remaining celibate, teaching students about love, and the tremendous changes wrought by Vatican II in the 1960s. At its core the book, which ends at the point where “Dead Man Walking” begins, is a timely story of investing words of faith with acts of meaning in the modern world, as she awakens to the genuine import of the vows and gospels to which she committed her life. Her heart fi nally starts to “break open” to social justice in 1980. “When I do wake up to the call of the Gospel to resist injustice and get to work in the public square, I have to call it grace,” she writes. And, later, “I have a hunch I’m going to be waking up till the moment I die.” “I’ve been a witness, and I’ve gotta tell the story,” she explains during an interview with the Pasadena Weekly. “That’s how I titled the book, quoting St. Bonaven-
ture: ‘Ask not about understanding, ask for the fi re.’ Witnessing Pat Sonnier being electrocuted to death with fi re, and how it set me on fi re — I have to stay faithful to that witness of what I’ve seen. That’s like being guarded as the apple of God’s eye.” PASADENA WEEKLY: Did you write “River of Fire” in response to some contemporary event or condition? SISTER HELEN PREJEAN: I’ve talked with many, many groups in the conversation about the death penalty and human rights. And I began to realize more and more that religion is not well served in the kinds of conversation going on, the kind of theology that’s out there. I mean blatant things, like a woman in the senate in Wyoming; within the last five months they had a [death penalty] repeal bill up that just needed her vote and maybe one other, and she said, “No, if Jesus hadn’t been executed by the Romans, we wouldn’t be saved from our sins.” … That’s not the gospel of Jesus, to claim that you can kill people in God’s name. Jeff Sessions quoted Romans 13 to justify the separation of children from their families at the border, claiming that because people break the law that’s against God; Justice Scalia [used] that to justify the use of the death penalty. There’s no deep understanding of the Scriptures, of the context in which they were written and what they mean. It’s very superficial proof texting — looking for text to prove a point you’ve already decided on. … Perhaps by sharing my own journey of waking up and widening my heart, to be involved in doing justice, perhaps I can be of help to others. That’s what’s behind the book.

‘BE PART OF THE CHANGE YOU SEEK’ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 09
You describe nuns as “first responders” to Vatican II’s “new outlook,” and write that you delighted in the recognition that God wants you to “make active use of intellect, imagination, and decisional power.” How do you counteract the widespread contemporary perception that religious belief is antithetical to intellectual independence? The big banner we were all floating during the days of Vatican II was that quote from Saint Irenaeus: “The glory of God is humans fully alive.” So “fully alive” means you’re using your intellect, you’re using your heart, you’re engaging as agents of change in the world. … Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is within you,” and he gave his spirit over to the apostles, and it was to go out and to change the world. We partner with God in creation of the world and recreating the world. Religion has been made to be a private affair for so long; when people get engaged it’s usually something in their parish, within the confi nes of serving people just like [them]. When you see politicians using religion, and I’ve seen it really close up with the death penalty, they only quote scripture when they can fi nd that proof text — scripture that agrees with what they’ve already made up their minds they’re gonna do. It’s moved away from inclusivity. It maximizes fear of the other. Listen to the language about immigrants that we hear coming out from this administration: “they’re rapists, they’re murders, they’re invading us.” It’s the same thing that happened about the death penalty. … When you begin to discern things and figure it out with your intellect, then you get engaged in being part of the change. Once you put your hand to a rope and begin to act, how freeing and liberating it can be to be part of action. What do you see in today’s tumultuous climate with regard to social change and people of differing faiths working together to achieve common goals? Empowering people with information and then with community organization — that’s what the 1960s brought us. Look at the young people and what they did, and look at the leadership of young people today and what they’re doing on climate change and gun violence. They’re standing up. And through social media they can organize and connect with each other. I see it as a time of tremendous possibility, and I think the midterm elections were the fi rst shot across the bow that we’re going to be moving toward change, and I believe it’s gonna happen in the election coming up as well. People can recognize when their leaders are lying and building their own reality literally out of thin air. … What changes things? When witnesses get in there, see it, and bring you there. Elie Wiesel said that anybody who was a witness to the Holocaust had a moral imperative to tell people what they had seen. I feel that way about the death penalty. What about mass shooters like the white nationalists who have attacked civilians and worshippers, and those who demand the death penalty for their crimes? How do you counter the hatred and the grief? In the past 30 years, people have said these people are so morally evil, what they have done is so irredeemable, that we have to kill them. That is the language of hate and extremism. We see the rhetoric of a president who keeps affi rming racist policies and attacking people, more and more and more. But human beings have intelligence! We [also] see more organizing of community around elections. We can’t just give all the power over that’s been taken over by this insensitivity and hate, and it’s so dominant that we begin to feel really powerless and hopeless. When “Dead Man Walking” came out in 1993, 80 percent of the national population believed in the death penalty; with Republicans in the Deep South, it was probably closer to 90 percent. By having all these conversations with people, crisscrossing the country, I learned some of the things that were at work. People had been made to be very 10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 09.05.19
afraid. They were kept from witnessing close up what was going on. … There’s a saying in Latin America: What the eye doesn’t see the heart can’t feel. I always did believe that the American people are good people with good hearts, and that they were always buying in at the circus to the death penalty because they’ve been made to be afraid. Bring them there, show them how it really works, show them how it’s completely ineffective, show them how we’re making mistakes all over the place because people are poor and they can’t have an adversarial bringing of the truth at trial — bring them there, and they get it. We’re beginning to see, across the United States, prosecutors aren’t seeking the death penalty, there are fewer and fewer death sentences. Attorney General William Barr recently ordered the federal government to revive the death penalty. Has that energized state-level campaigns against it? The White House has no awareness of the Constitution or how it works. They think simply by declaring “speed up these executions” that they’ll get these five people executed right away. They don’t know about the appeals that are there, and what federal defenders are doing. We have two cases from Louisiana, and I asked the federal defender here in Louisiana, “Do you think they’ll be able to kill them?” He said, “No, we’ll be able to hold it off for a long time.” … They’re going to fight that in the courts just like the Muslim ban was fought in the courts, just like “I’m not going to give green cards to people anymore” gets fought in the courts, just like “We’re going to hold children indefi nitely” will be fought in the courts. I do believe with the human rights situation, with what’s been happening to children at the border, that we’re gonna be held accountable one day in an international court of law for the cruelty and torture of children. You’ve gotta know the law. You cite Thomas Merton as a prayer model and still take retreats at the Abbey of Gethsemani, the monastery where he lived. He’s an interesting choice for an extrovert. I would never make my life just solely one of contemplation without rolling up my sleeves and being active and changing the world. But it’s a good place to go to pray. You have silence, you have solitude, you can join the monks. Sometimes it’s good to get up at three in the morning and change your patterns, there in the dark, in that big abbey church, and then you have the intoning of the chant, of the Psalms, that bring you through every human condition and every emotion, with just a candle lit up front. [She sings the chant.] It’s like your soul’s so distilled, it’s like water goes into this soil where you can receive the words and the silence. It’s so good for me. So I go back every year because I need what it gives. But that’s not a life that I would undertake, simply to pray for the world. You write about white suburban friends asking stereotypical questions about poor people you worked with in New Orleans’ St. Thomas housing project: “Why don’t they get jobs?” “Why don’t they keep their kids in school?” You answered with stories about those people. What insights has that experience given you, and how might you advise people struggling to communicate across bitter divides in 2019? It’s what God said: Be part, in your soul, of the change you seek. Because we see, we get engaged to make change. We have a lot of sisters, religious nuns, going down to the border and being with these families. When we are engaged, we can speak out of experience to people, and you also realize that it’s not just gonna be these light little conversations back and forth that change anything. It’s gonna be people waking up to the need and getting engaged in the change, and then those kinds of conversations that come after you’ve engaged. ■ Vroman’s Bookstore presents Sister Helen Prejean in conversation with Rev. hile most people were relaxing by the pool, lounging on the beach, jetting off on holiday getaways and soaking up the last bit of summer over the long Labor Day weekend, I was cooling my heels inside my air conditioned home. Summer and I have never really hit it off. Actually, I despise the heat, even though in Southern California everyone’s favorite summertime activities require going outside while the sun is up. It was with this quandary in mind that I spent my requisite summertime outdoor fun time doing something I think is really fun: eating something good (hopefully), and then writing about the experience. I decided to face my fear and satisfy my seasonal need to get out of the house by visiting the Great White Hut, located on the northeast corner of California Avenue and Orange Street in Glendale, which, unbeknownst to me, has very limited seating, and is as close to an actual hut as one can get. I admit: I didn’t really think this through prior to making my way there in the 95-degree heat. But don’t get the wrong idea. It’s not inconvenient; quite to the contrary. The Great White Hut is easily accessible by foot, situated just a block from busy and pedestrian friendly Brand Boulevard, and it has a public parking

lot right behind it. We arrived around 2 p.m. and it wasn’t very busy at all; just two people had ordered ahead of us, and two couples sat at the only two tables — the alternative being bar stools lined at a counter built up around the midsection of the diminutive white structure. There is a second location in Glendale on Cañada Boulevard that has indoor seating (perhaps even air conditioning), but we braved the weather like the Californians we are, all for the chance at a crack at the Hut’s mouthwatering menu. The California Avenue location is the first of the two, having opened in that same spot in 1947. While owners have changed over the years, all else has remained as it once was — something of a rarity in today’s tough restaurant trade. My dining companion quickly decided on the classic fritas, or fries ($5.35), which were easily his favorite part of the meal, and a customer favorite. The fries are topped with carne asada, cilantro, feta cheese, spicy garlic aioli, and avocado cream that can be added on. I tried them with the works, and the aioli and cream alone are worth it. My friend said Great White’s fries are the absolute best version of a carne asada, or roasted meat, he’s tried. There are three other fry options, and all sound just as amazing: Americano, made with bacon, cheddar cheese and grilled onions, then topped with ranch and spicy garlic aioli; fiesta fries, which contain carne asada, cheddar cheese and jalapeños, and topped with diablo salsa and avocado cream; and sunrise fries, just in case you’re craving fries for breakfast. These come with bacon, egg and feta cheese, plus salsa verde and thousand island dressing. If that isn’t enough to choose from, customers can build their own ideal versions of this star menu item. I went more sage with a veggie burrito and a simple chicken taco. The veggie burrito ($6.25) is made with beans, cheese, lettuce, guacamole, pico de Gallo and mild green salsa, all wrapped in a flour tortilla. It was good, although pinto beans are not my favorite. Refried or black beans would have made it perfect for my taste. In between bites of my burrito, I nibbled on the chicken taco ($1.85), which was my favorite. I opted for the mild green salsa, which in my opinion made the entire taco. When I was growing up, my parents regarded salsa
as the make or break component of a good taco (aside from the meat, of course), and I never fully understood why, until I tried this taco. To begin with, the chicken is perfectly seasoned, cooked and cut. It also contains a generous serving of meat. Onions and cilantro are blended together with the green salsa, giving just a slight kick, which made me wish I had ordered a few extra tacos instead of the burrito. Interestingly, their only other meat option is carne asada, but considering the quality of the food they serve, they don’t really need anything else. To top off the meal, my friend also tried the double cheeseburger ($5.95), which comes with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and thousand island dressing, served on a toasted bun. It’s simple, clean, tasty, and all that a burger should be. Any burger can also be ordered protein style, a la In N Out. You can even add an egg, bacon, or avocado to your burgers for an additional $1.25 each. Who wouldn’t want any of those three things to take their burgers up a couple of notches? Any entree can also be made into a combo for $3.50 which adds fries and a soda. Despite the blistering heat, this was one of the best meals we’d both had in a while. We had managed to snag a shaded table right next to the pharmacy with which the Great White Hut shares a parking lot, and I almost forgot about the temperature (almost). To top off the entire experience, they also serve breakfast all day, from breakfast burritos and breakfast quesadillas to breakfast tacos and a breakfast bowl option which I thought was interesting. The burritos and bowls are served with eggs, cheese, pico de Gallo, hash browns and choice of sauce. Bacon, carne asada, or chicken can also be added on. Regular quesadillas and nachos are perfect for a late meal after a long night out. This is more sophisticated fast food munchie meal, if you will, although I wouldn’t consider this fast food. While the menu is concise, they work around limited meat options by serving every side or addon you could possibly want. The burgers and tacos are standard and delicious, and their fry menu makes The Great White Hut what it is — a very small restaurant with a whole lot of character that features great tasting food.

A CONFUSING CONDITION TOURETTE’S SYNDROME IS OFTEN MISDIAGNOSED, UNDER-DIAGNOSED AND WIDELY MISUNDERSTOOD Dear Patti, I’m a single dad and the only family I have in the world is my 8-year-old son, Jagger. Recently, all of a sudden Jagger started twitching his neck continually and couldn’t seem to stop. I didn’t want to overreact so I waited for a week, but when these unusual repetitive movements didn’t go away I took Jagger to his doctor, who has cared for him since birth. The pediatrician said to carefully observe him and that he’d probably outgrow it, but to bring him back if it continued or worsened. In the last few weeks, along with twitching, Jagger has started to habitually shrug his shoulder and make a squeaking, cough-like sound involuntarily. He tries but can’t seem to control it and I don’t know why. It’s heartbreaking. He’s always been a healthy, happy little boy. He loves sports, especially soccer. He just entered the third grade but he’s embarrassed and doesn’t want to go to school because he’s afraid he’ll get laughed at. Last year, my kid loved school and was completely carefree. Jagger’s doctor is sending us to a specialist. It has been suggested that he might have Tourette’s syndrome. How do we handle this? I feel so helpless.
— Craig Dear Craig, I’m so sorry for your little boy’s suffering. I understand that this must be a very painful situation for both of you. I know it’s hard, but when possible allow Jagger to lean on you for support, especially when feelings of pain, fear, grief and resentment arise. These are natural responses when your child is emotionally or physically at risk, and sharing these emotions will enable him to better acknowledge and handle the challenges of managing a confusing condition that could potentially be harmful to his self-esteem and social development. Presently, there isn’t a cure for Tourette’s syndrome (TS). Treatment is aimed at controlling tics that interfere with everyday activities and functioning. In the absence of specific screening tests to diagnose it, this condition can be complicated, misdiagnosed, under-diagnosed and widely misunderstood. It’s believed to be a brain disorder that causes involuntary tics. Tics are sudden, often strange, uncontrollable physical movements or vocal sounds. TS is clinically diagnosed when a person exhibits multiple motor tics and one or more vocal tics over the period of a year with no more than three consecutive tic-free months. It’s difficult to predict the course this illness will take, and each child copes with TS differently. Some children will have a mild course in which they outgrow their tics; for others, it’s more severe. I’m very glad you’re seeking professional help. Observation plays a major part in the diagnosis process, not just in looking at the particular tics Jagger has, but also in how severe and frequent they are. Sometimes children try to suppress the tics in front of the doctor, so it might be a good idea to bring a video of Jagger in order to properly document his symptoms. Even if Jagger is diagnosed with TS, it’s important to take your time, gather all the facts, research TS, and ask the doctors plenty of questions in order to make the most informed decisions regarding his treatment. Medication is commonly used for severe TS and can be very effective. You’ll also want to learn about treatment alternatives such as response and awareness training and deep brain stimulation. Habit-reversal training is a behavioral technique making patients aware of the urge to tic and teaching them to create muscular responses incompatible with the tic. Since TS children are often criticized or judged for their symptoms, it’s crucial to their feelings of self-esteem to praise and compliment good behavior. Some experts say that when children get involved in physical activities like sports and exercise or creative pursuits such as writing, painting, or music, their tics are milder and less frequent. Contrary to parental fears, a TS diagnosis doesn’t affect a child’s intelligence nor label them as obstinate or purposely disruptive, because the tics are involuntary. Teasing, and the resulting school phobias it engenders, shouldn’t be tolerated, and teachers and other adults should intervene. Supportive psychotherapy may also be helpful. Although psychological problems do not cause TS, such problems may result from dealing with it. Psychotherapy can also help the person better cope with the disorder itself and cope with the secondary social and emotional problems that often occur. ■ Patti Carmalt-Vener, a faculty member with the Southern California Society for Intensive Short Term Psychotherapy, has been a psychotherapist in private practice for 23 years and has an office in Pasadena. y shining a much-needed spotlight on the lives of Asian-American women in 1987 San Francisco, “The Joy Luck Club” became an unlikely literary sensation when it was released in 1990. Going beyond best-selling book status to become an acclaimed film in 1994 as well, “Club” is now coming to life through Oct. 5 on the stage of the Sierra Madre Playhouse. Following a quartet of Chinese women who meet regularly at their Joy Luck Club to play mahjong and socialize, the group is shaken when its founder passes away, and her American-born

daughter is invited to join the group. As the complex relationships unfold, the play moves from China in the early 20th century and San Francisco from the 1950s to the 1980s, as the eight women struggle across a seemingly unpassable chasm of culture, generation and expectations to find strength and happiness. “I worked with them last year on their Theater for Youth field series, directing the short play ‘Nothing is the Same,’” says Tim Dang, director of the current “Joy” production. “That was about four 11-year-olds who were affected by Pearl Harbor while living in

the scene or the play happening,” says Dang. “Only three scenes of the play have all 13 actors on stage, while otherwise there are maybe eight actors in a given scene. So we had to strategically choreograph them, with little spike marks on the floor so actors know where to go, little pieces of glow tape so they know where to step. It was pretty precise in terms of the staging.” With all the effort already paying off in a hit opening week, Dang is optimistic that the Asian acting community is here to stay and continues to grow ever-bigger. “The film of ‘Joy’ came out 25 years ago and was probably the first major Asian film to actually have critical and popular success back in 1994,” says Dang. “[The ABC sitcom] ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ is very popular and gaining traction for more popular fare. Disney, Hulu, Amazon thirst for content, and with that is much more openness for the entertainment industry for different kinds of stories with so many rich stories there. “There has to be leadership at the top and there are more producers and directors seeking out this kind of content on many different levels, whether film, TV or stage,” he concludes. “Pasadena Playhouse’s next play ‘The Great Leap’ is Asian-themed. Hopefully this will continue with more diverse fare. Hopefully there’s more thirst for opportunity.” n “The Joy Luck Club” runs through Oct. 5 at the Sierra Madre Playhouse, 87 W. Hawaii at that time. “The Playhouse’s artistic director Christian Lebano invited me to direct this, because it has a mission of portraying the American experience on stage,” adds Dang. “‘Joy Luck Club’ is about the immigrant Chinese experience, and played directly into their mission. The surrounding communities of Pasadena, Arcadia, Alhambra and Montebello, and across the San Gabriel Valley that have Asian-American communities could be reached out to for the first time. LA County is so huge, with over 4,000 square miles, that to find a show to attend in your own neighborhood is a great thing.” Dang notes that the live production of “Joy” has many challenges, particularly because the cast is extremely large by the Playhouse’s standards. The cast is composed of 13 actors playing on a stage that normally holds five to seven performers, and the fact that the play has up to 60 characters means even those actors have to perform an average of four roles apiece. Add in flashbacks to China and flash-forwards to San Francisco and the production needed to raise additional funds far surpassing the normal SMP budget levels. A series of intimate house parties with Playhouse patrons and members of the Chinese-American community raised almost $35,000, which was used to pay for additional cast members, costumes and production value. “Directing this play was like playing Tetris, because I would draw figures on a mock drawing of the set so I would know where all the actors go at any one moment of

Sweet, Lean and Deep SOUL SCRATCH BRINGS FUNKY TUNES AND A TIMELY MESSAGE TO ONE COLORADO SATURDAY
“L
ove, Peace, and Music” can be musically interpreted an endless variety of ways, depending on the artists handling translation. San Fernando Valley ensemble Soul Scratch, who claim that phrase as a mission statement, take their lead from 1960s and ’70s soul in the muscular vitality of their performances and arrangements and, most importantly, the thematic relevance of their songs. Their 2012 EP “Meet Me in the Sun,” though well done, favored style over substance; 2014’s full-length “Down the Road” dug deeper and stretched into gospel and acoustic blues. 2017’s “Pushing Fire” garnered admiring reviews and yielded tough groovers “Odessa Heat” and “Be Kind” and socially conscious burner “Pacified,” informed by the legacies of Solomon Burke and Curtis Mayfield: “Where’s that outreach now/ Where’s my people on the street/ These corporations got a voice/ While we sit silent in defeat.” Massachusetts-raised front-
man Dale Spollett possesses one of those passionate, openthroated voices that turns heads. His gutsy, all-in vocal style has earned understandable comparisons to St. Paul & the Broken Bones frontman Paul Janeway and gospel-soul belter Mike Farris, though he does not boast Janeway’s theatricality or Farris’ rock ‘n’ roll swagger. Instead he brings unabashed, almost sweet sincerity that works like contrasting harmony against guitarist Joel Givertz’s leaner tones. As the band pumps out hard rhythms and horn riffs, Spollett bites into the lines of “America” with a conviction that matches the urgency of the Stax-style single, a funky slab of righteous commentary that Colemine dropped in April: “Misconception runs amok today Get to know your neighbor and you’ll see The struggle’s happening for everyone Only us coming together sets
us free… Hold up, is this America Look at what you’re leaving behind Is this the future that we struggled for The world we fought so hard to find… What’s wrong with the world today?” “We All Bleed the Same” was issued that same week, in the aftermath of the mass shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand: “I thought that love had conquered/ I hoped that hate had lost/ How could one man disagree/ And 49 souls pay the cost.” As citizens continue caring for the wounded and mourning the dead in Dayton, El Paso and Gilroy, the song’s slow-burning anguish could not be more timely. n Soul Scratch performs at One Colorado courtyard, 41 Hugus Alley, Old Pasadena, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7; free admission. Crisply co-produced with Buddy Miller at his Nashville home studio, the Canadian singersongwriter’s tuneful pop pulses with a sense of purpose, likely influenced by the visual concussion that upended her life for four years. Gillis’ clear, punchy alto often catches in her throat and occasionally calls to mind Alison Moyet, particularly during tougher tracks like “Dirt Gets Dirty” and the saxophone-twisted “Slow Motion Killer.” Other highlights: “Jeremy Woodstock,” “The Feeling of Empty” (“I read too much, I write too much, I think too much/ When all I’ve ever wanted is to know enough/ To fill me up”). WHITNEY, Forever Turned Around (Secretly Canadian): HHH½
Drummer Julien Ehrlich and guitarist Max Kakacek sound like they were wandering around in a ’70s California haze while composing the Chicago band’s sophomore album, which serves up dreamy pop balm for headline-rattled listeners seeking respite. Echoes of Burt Bacharach and Neil Young can be discerned in the melodic curves and harmonics of tracks like the hooky “Used to Be Lonely,” “Valleys (My Love)” and the pensively hopeful “Song for Ty” (“Anything could happen”), with Ehrlich’s silken tenor sweetening thoughtful musings about the sticky catch-22s of relationships and independence. facebook.com/whitneychicago
SUNNY WAR, Shell of a Girl (Hen House): HHH½
The onetime Venice busker exercises a winningly light touch as both guitarist and poet while tapping into societal pressures and hypocrisies here, beautifully braiding strands of blues, bossa nova, folk and jazz into her melodic phrases. Micah Nelson’s harmonica and Milo Gonzalez’s Dobro add atmospheric contours to tracks like “Where the Lost Get Found” and “Got No Ride” (“Turned my pain into my pride”); other highlights include the swaying “Shell” and “Drugs Are Bad” (“Unless of course you get too sad”). Worthy of the time it quietly requests. sunnywar.com

BY CARL KOZLOWSKI Chris Galust and Lauren “Lolo” Spencer in Give Me Liberty.
Comic Roller Coaster SUNDANCE SENSATION ‘GIVE ME LIBERTY’ IS THE FUNNIEST AND MOST UNPREDICTABLE MOVIE OF THE YEAR
T
here are some jobs that most people take for granted. Being a dial-a-ride driver— the men and women who operate specialized vans carrying disabled, elderly or impoverished people — is one of them. The new movie “Give Me Liberty” helps change that perception by focusing on a young Russian immigrant named Vic, who frantically hurtles through Milwaukee on a day that’s both harrowing for his passengers and for viewers, and all too much of a dangerous routine for him. Paced at breakneck speed, with richly drawn characters and utterly unpredictable situations, it plays like a darkly comic version of the vastly underseen 1999 Nicolas Cage-Martin Scorsese film “Bringing Out the Dead.” It also feels as if Quentin Tarantino opted to return to his low-budget roots and make a gritty cinema verité style film on the topic. What makes this movie, now playing at Laemmle Playhouse 7 in Pasadena, utterly amazing is that its entire cast is comprised of actors in their debut roles and was made by a writer-director team that’s also making its debut narrative film after a career in documentaries. The movie follows a day in the life of Vic (Chris Galust), a twentysomething man who’s the son of an immigrant single mother who’s always expressing her concern about him. She wants him to attend music school and be a professional cello player, but he doesn’t have the desire to do so. Instead, Vic finds purpose in helping numerous disadvantaged people get around Milwaukee using his transport van. It’s only supposed to be used for disabled people, but Vic’s a softie, and on the day the film is set he quickly gets overwhelmed by agreeing to take a group of several elderly Russians to a burial site so they can stage an impromptu funeral for a woman who spent her life without any family. At the same time, Vic also has the clients he’s supposed to be helping aboard. That includes Tracy (Lauren “Lolo” Spencer in an Oscar-worthy performance of 20 PASADENA WEEKLY | 09.05.19
vast yet subtle emotional range), an African-American woman with ALS and a motorized wheelchair who has to get to her job as a social worker for disabled people. Then there’s a mentally challenged woman who keeps practicing her off-key rendition of “Rock Around the Clock” while frantically begging Vic to make sure he attends her daycare center’s talent show. Add in a client of Tracy’s who can barely speak but keeps complaining about being late for a job interview, and a jovial Russian hustler named Dima (Maksim Stoyanov) who keeps adding to the chaos, and you’ve got a non-stop comic rollercoaster that’s the wildest movie I’ve seen in years. The Sunday night audience I saw “Liberty” with at Laemmle’s Santa Monica theater was packed with a wide range of men and women of multiple races and different ages, all exploding with laughter or gasping with surprise throughout. The magic of casting unknowns in a movie like this, then setting it in a city that’s rarely portrayed in films, makes this feel bracingly real and raises the stakes to an infinite level. The best part of it all is that American writer Alice Austen teamed with the film’s Russian director, the one-named Mikhanovsky, to provide an outsider’s view of American society that feels completely relatable and even transformative. Throughout the film, different cultures clash, as the African-American Tracy resents all the Russians who are illicitly aboard the van, while the Russians initially recoil in fear at having to drive through her neighborhood. But as this improbable mix of humanity shares in one hilarious, dangerous misadventure after another, they are forced to drop their personal walls and appreciate each other. In a time in which a highly divisive president seeks to keep people apart with imposing barriers, a movie like this Sundance Film Fest sensation can bring people together. “Give Me Liberty” is a must-see. Take some friends. Spread the word. n
