ow that many of us have dipped our big toe back into social engagements, I was at an event, sitting next to someone I didn’t know but had heard of: “Emma Empowerment” (not her real name). She’s a pillar of several communities that empower women and girls. She asked what I do, and I said, “I am an empowerment self-defense advocate and have written a book about it which is also a movie. My next project is a musical about women’s self-defense.” She looked taken aback, so I added, “Kidding.” She brightened and said, “We just had a self-defense class for my group!” “Terrific,” I said. “Who taught it?” “Oh, this really nice guy, Marty Martial Arts!” (also not his real name). “Can I be straight with you?” I asked. A slight hesitation, “Oh, OK. Sure.” Our chat went from small talk to big talk in a flash. “You hired a man to lead a women’s self-defense class?” “Yes, of course,” she said. “Why? I promote women teaching women self-defense. This is a pet peeve of mine so forgive me if I’m putting you on the spot.” A bit flustered, she said, “I automatically looked for a man. OMG. And I know better!” “How’s that?” I ask. “I’m a women’s sports coach and I get overlooked in favor of men all the time, and yet I didn’t catch it when I did the same thing with a women’s self-defense teacher. We’re marking 50 years of Title IX this year, and we’ve made enormous strides. But women coaches? Not so much. I basically let my unconscious bias for male coaching inform my ‘shopping’ for a self-defense instructor,” Emma said. “And that’s exactly what I hate about my own field.” “Indeed. Our biases run deep and unexamined; they are rarely malicious or conspiratorial,” I said. I then exacted a promise that the next time Emma hosts a self-defense class, she would call IMPACT Personal Safety (IPS), the nonprofit I have been on the board of for a long time. We continued our chat and acknowledged that we all have blind spots that will take time to discern and dismantle. Regardless of gender, we’ve all been marinated in white, heteronormative male superiority that we are currently breaking through in thought, word and deed … sometimes daily. Many people don’t even want to know the heartbreaking statistics of gender-based violence regarding women’s self-defense. I’m reminded of a middle-aged Mexican student in an IPS class in Tijuana. When some of the younger students doubted whether self-defense could work, she raised her hand. The older woman shared that when she finally got tired of her husband coming home smashed, she did some smashing of her own: with a cast-iron frying pan. She didn’t aim to kill him; she aimed to deliver a consequence that would prevent him from ever beating her up or batting the kids around again. And it worked — he never came home blasted after that. Don’t misunderstand: We don’t run around with pans and rolling pins, but you get the point of a woman breaking out of the stereotypes of emotional and physical submission. So many things have shifted in our recent history. Openly gay people are married and even serving in the federal cabinet! A POC vice president; women on the Supreme Court! The list is inspiring. If you’d told any of us 60 to 70 years ago that women could be anything other than a wife, mother, nurse, maybe an author or actor, librarian or teacher, we’d think you were, at best, a dreamer or, at worst, bonkers. My mother couldn’t get a credit card in her own name, for goodness sake! In my own circle, I know female lawyers, doctors, consultants, clergy, pilots and self-defense teachers: badasses all. And judges. Yes — judges. This brings me to the upcoming election. As I wrote in June of this

year for the primaries, a confession: as election-aware as I like to think of myself, evaluating the judges on a ballot has traditionally stumped me, and that’s embarrassing to admit. I’ll bet many of us are like that and possibly too proud to cop to it. To help make the most informed choices, I typically utilize the Consumer Watchdog voting guides, Democratic party and union endorsements, and recommendations from the League of Women Voters. I still feel ignorant about judges, but not this time. I’m very impressed with the Defenders of Justice slate that consists of Elizabeth Lashley-Haynes (Office 67), Holly Hancock (Office 70), Carolyn “Jiyoung” Park (Office 118) and Anna Slotky Reitano (Office 60). They know what life as lived is like and can sit on the bench with compassion. Finally, lest you think I vote a straight female ticket, many men also deserve our votes. Hyperlocally, for school board, I’m voting for Billy Malone. Hoo-boy, Kimberly Kenne, the incumbent, is tone-deaf, entitled, and a generally despicable person who shouldn’t be allowed near a school, let alone a school governing body. Talk about blind spots: She’s a walking, talking example of one. Let’s all vote with our eyes open. Ellen Snortland has written this column for decades and also teaches creative writing. Rose Bowl Stadium celebrates 100 years

or a century, the Rose Bowl Stadium has stood as a theater of sporting greatness, a symbol of a community’s love for its city and a landmark of not only Pasadena, but the entire country. On Oct. 28, America’s Stadium turned 100 years old. “The legacy of the Rose Bowl is that it’s still relevant today as we look at buildings that were built and now are no longer used, or may still be around but aren’t as relevant,” CEO and general manager Jens Weiden said. “At a hundred years after it was built, (the Rose Bowl) is as busy as it’s ever been. I think that that’s pretty special, and I think that shows that Pasadena really cares about its historic structures.” Built in 1922, the stadium was designed by local architect Myron Hunt, whose work also included the Pasadena Central Library, Huntington Library, Huntington Mansion, Huntington Hospital, Kellogg Ranch and Throop University, which later became known as the California Institute of Technology. The Rose Bowl Stadium hosted its first game on Oct. 28, 1922, when USC played Cal in front of a crowd of 36,000. The stadium has gone on to showcase a myriad of the most esteemed competitions in world sports, including Olympic track cycling in 1932, Olympic soccer in 1984, five Super Bowls in 1977, 1980, 1983, 1987 and 1993, the 1994 FIFA Men’s World Cup and the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final, which Team USA won in front of 90,185 fans, the largest crowd in the world to ever see a women’s sporting event. “At a point, it puts Pasadena on the global map,” Weiden explained. “A lot of people talk about how they travel and they’re very proud that when people ask them where they’re from, they don’t say Los Angeles. There’re a lot of cities that surround LA that probably just have to say Los Angeles for somebody in an international city to know where you’re from, right? But people that live in Pasadena are very proud to say Pasadena because they know that they’re going to get a ‘Rose Bowl’ or ‘Rose Parade’ or ‘that’s where the Olympics were’ and ‘that’s where World Cup soccer took place.’ I think that’s probably one of the things that I’m most proud of for the folks that live in Pasadena. … It’s a commercial for the Southern California lifestyle.” College football announcer Kirk Herbstreit described the Rose Bowl Stadium as the “most magnificent setting in all of sports,” while famed sports commentator and radio personality Keith Jackson described it as “the Mecca … the mansion at the end of the yellow brick road. For everybody who’s a college football fan, this is where you want to come.” In 1982, the stadium became the official home of UCLA Football, who defeated Michigan in the 1983 Rose Bowl Game to become champions in their first year in the Arroyo Seco. “The fact that we’re the home of the Bruins is a really cool way for us to progress as the stadium evolves,” Weiden said. “I really think it’s become a meeting ground for people in the Greater Los Angeles area and really an iconic spot to be. “One of my favorite memories was actually the first time I came here before I worked here. It was a UCLA vs. Tennessee football game…We were tailgating, parked under a tree and it just blew me away how beautiful this setting is. And I think that’s what makes the Rose Bowl special. A lot of football stadiums are known as grid iron and they’re important because of what happens on the field. The Rose Bowl is important because of where it is. It’s at the base of the San Gabriel’s and in the third quarter of the Rose Bowl Game you always get the sunset on the mountains. It really has a sense of place, where the Rose Bowl is, and I think that’s pretty special.” Outside of sports, the stadium is home to the largest flea market on the West Coast with around 20,000 visitors each month and has hosted some of the most famous musical acts of the last century.

Report: Officers used ‘objectively reasonable’ force against McClain By Morgan Owen Pasadena Weekly Staff Writer

For the past 100 years, the Rose Bowl has showcased some of the most esteemed competitions and athletes in the world. In 1982, the Rose Bowl Stadium held “Peace Sunday,” a concert promoting nuclear disarmament featuring Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Nicks, Bette Midler, Tom Petty and many other famed acts. Throughout its history, the venue has also seen the likes of Beyonce, Coldplay, Depeche Mode and U2 take to the field. Weiden expressed that the best is yet to come. “My hopes are that (the stadium) celebrates 200 years, and it doesn’t just celebrate 200 years as a building. It celebrates 200 years of events that are still taking place,” Weiden explained. “There’re venues all throughout the world like the Coliseum in Rome that are really amazing structures. They’re still here, but they’re not being used. And I think it’s really important for us that we do everything we can to invest in this building so that a hundred years from now, they’re talking about a hundred years of events. … And I think we’re going to get there. I think that the fact that we’re as busy as ever is a showcase to how dynamic and how versatile this building is. Also the Central Arroyo. … We’re using the entirety of the grounds, not just the stadium, to compliment each other. And I think that’ll continue for another a hundred years.”

asadena Police Officer Edwin Dumaguidin “used deadly force consistent with department policy” in the shooting death of Anthony McClain on Aug. 15, 2020, according to a report released on Oct. 28. However, the report indicated Dumaguindin may have violated departmental policy when he neglected to activate his body-worn camera until after the shooting began. The incident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. on the 15th after Dumaguidin and his partner, officer Ryan Mulrooney, conducted a traffic stop involving McClain, 32, and a second individual near La Pintoresca Park. The car was pulled over because it did not display a front license plate. After the driver stated he did not have a license, Mulrooney asked him to step out of the vehicle and searched him for weapons. According to the report, McClain stepped out of the car at Dumaguiden’s request. The footage released by the police department shows McClain fumbling with his waistband as he exited the vehicle before promptly fleeing from Dumaguiden. As McClain fled, Dumaguiden said he saw McClain with a gun in his left hand and that he believed McClain would shoot him by bringing the gun over his right shoulder. Dumaguiden discharged two rounds and saw one of them hit McClain. Seven seconds passed between when McClain exited the vehicle and Dumaguiden fired his first round. Although police later recovered a handgun with McClain’s DNA on it, previous lawsuits alleged McClain never had a firearm and that he was merely fumbling with his belt. On the scene before his death, McClain also denied having a handgun. The Review Board’s Report, on the other hand, concluded that McClain did remove a gun from his waistband and discarded it along Raymond Avenue. No shots were fired from the recovered handgun. The chase between Dumaguiden and McClain continued until McClain collapsed by the east curb of Raymond Avenue. In the footage, Dumaguiden catches up, and it is clear McClain was shot at least once. Officers proceeded to turn Dumaguiden over, restrain him and administer pressure to the wounds. By this time, a crowd had gathered and was yelling at the officers, who repeatedly yelled at the crowd to “back up” and presented tasers to deter their advance. The report described the group as “hostile” and “emotionally charged,” saying their involvement made it difficult for officers to administer first-aid to McClain, who later died at the hospital from his injuries. The report then assessed the situation between the time Dumaguiden caught up to McClain and medical assistance arrived, specifically debating the merits of different ways officers could have subdued the crowd, including tasers, pepper spray and riot batons. It also stated officers should have established a police perimeter sooner to restrict community access to the scene. Sections of the Use of Force Review illuminate that the shooting damaged community relations between police officers and the public in the area surrounding McClain’s place of arrest. Following the incident, The Pasadena Police Department’s Community Services Section attempted to reach out to the community, but people were “upset” and “expressed hostility.” The review also stated that the city removed a memorial established for McClain, further damaging the relationship between the community, the city, and the police. The shooting occurred just months after George Floyd’s death, when the American public was already angered by the police’s treatment of Black Americans. In May of 2021, members of George Floyd and McClain’s families attended a Black Lives Matter protest outside Pasadena City Hall, causing the city council to cancel its meeting for that day. In one of three lawsuits surrounding McClain’s death, the city agreed to pay $2.5 million each to the mothers of McClain’s three children. In April of 2022, The LA District Attorney’s Office determined there was insufficient evidence to criminally charge Dumaguindin, saying evidence strongly supports the claim McClain was armed and that Dumaguiden acted in self-defense. In cases involving a criminal investigation, the Pasadena Police Department’s Professional Standards Unit routinely investigates the violation of departmental policies, presenting their findings to the Department’s Use of Force Board. The chief of police then uses the board’s recommendation to render a final decision. Only the employee in question has the right to appeal throughout this process. “I am committed to holding myself and the other members of the Department accountable for our actions, individually and collectively. … Ultimately, this incident resulted in the loss of Mr. McClain’s life, and it was tragic for all those involved and for the community,” Interim Police Chief Jason Clawson said. Clawson concluded officers used “objectively reasonable” force against McClain and that it complied with departmental policy. Dumaguiden still potentially faces disciplinary action regarding not activating his body camera promptly. The consequences of that violation remain under review. 11.03.22 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7

W

hen La Salle College Preparatory developed their six-year strategic plan in 2021, one of the core tenants of the Pasadena school’s mission was to inspire future leaders. With the support of a recent $1 million grant from the Carrico Family Foundation, the largest one-time gift in the school’s 66-year history, La Salle has launched its new CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation to provide a state-of-the-art medical career pathway for students interested in becoming the next generation of trailblazers in the health care industry. “It’s very humbling to know that you’re valued so much,” La Salle President Perry Martin said. “It’s different than a building and it’s different than a gift. … We’re talking about an academic program that raises the level for everybody in the science department and beyond.” The school has scheduled a blessing and celebration for the center in the library on Nov. 2. Maggie Carrico-Lowman, president of the Carrico Family Foundation, will also tour the school. “We always want to bless our space. We want our kids to realize that God is part of this and we’re not as great without God,” Martin said. “The second thing is just to celebrate as a community. We haven’t had enough time just to stop and celebrate. It’s been moving so fast. Don’t get me wrong, when we got the million dollars … it was something that hasn’t happened here before. The kids were excited. … A lot of these teachers have been here for 20, 25 years. They’ve never seen anything like this. So the whole process is meaningful.” The CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation is open to students interested in a wide variety of fields in health care, from biomedical research to pharmacology to robotic prosthetics engineering. The center includes a six-foot Anatomage Table designed for students to visualize human anatomy at the highest level, along with three 3D printers that specialize in veterinary science, prosthesis and dentistry. “We recognize that there’re going to be kids that want to be veterinarians, kids that want to be dentists, kids that want to be surgeons, kids that want to be researchers,” Martin explained. “We have a cancer center where we have purchased different

types of cancer cells, live cancer cells, and we’re able to freeze those and also grow those in an incubator. … Kids can actually do real research and get in some of these science fairs across the nation and win some of those awards because they can do research in their own school.” The CARLOW Center also allows students to partake in virtual reality scenarios to address health emergencies from an on-the-ground perspective. The situations range from a helping victims of a car wreck on the side of a road to providing first aid to a wounded hiker after an avalanche. Students who successfully complete these VR scenarios, as well 50 hours of community service in the health care industry and two to four course credits from Pasadena City College or La Salle’s online virtual course library, can earn a “Verified Certification of Core Learning.” “Our school is growing in leaps and bounds,” Martin said. “The program is developed to allow kids to take the skills that they learn in a traditional classroom, put them in a place where they practice a skill set that goes along with that, and yet the skills they are learning are more applicable than learning in a book. These kids that go down there, by the way, there’re 65 or 70 every day, they don’t want to go home. … Kids want to learn. They love the magnetism and the excitement of playing a role that they may have in the future. It’s the ultimate connection.” Martin described that the CARLOW Center began as a vision that was then developed by the board of trustees into a strategic plan for how to create new opportunities and pathways for student development. With the $1 million grant from the Carrico Family Foundation, the dream was then made into a reality with students utilizing health care equipment to learn more about the industry. “I think we are on the cusp of competing in our competitive set better as a school, being the best school we can be personally from a perspective of our own self, and also being a school where … every kid can have the opportunity to stretch and challenge, find something that fits. I think that’s who we are, and not every school can say that. Become your better self.”

He lists two factors that made A Noise Within a place that was worthy of investing time and energy. “The first would be that there’s this tangible sense of mutual gratitude that everybody has for each other within the organization,” Bateman said. “The board is really grateful for what the staff and artists do. The artists are really grateful for the audience and what the donors do for the company. The staff is really grateful. It’s just this kind of beautiful, mutual sense that everybody is passionate and cares about the work. That’s just really self-reinforcing that it means so much to so many people.” The second thing that kept him with the organization was the vision that the founding directors have for the company. He points out that they’ve been at the work for more than 30 years and they are still as energetic as they were in the beginning, still expanding on their vision about performing the classics. “There’s still this vast passion for artistry onstage,” Bateman said. “But there’s so much more to that vision now. It’s become much more expansive because they’ve committed to equity and inclusion and different perspectives in the storytelling onstage, and in the creative teams that put the shows together. It’s a vision that you don’t get tired of hearing. They continue to work on evolving that mission and that vision. There’s nothing stagnant about A Noise Within.” As he steps down, Bateman talked about how lucky he felt to have come to the company when it had just moved to Pasadena, a move that he said has been good for the company. “I want to leave everybody with my thank you and my gratitude for being welcomed into the community,” Bateman said. “The whole Pasadena community has been part of making A Noise Within feel welcome, feel like part of the community and I don’t think that the company would be in the enviable position it is right now without that community support. It’s meant a lot to me and it’s definitely become my community.”

Billy Zane says his work comes from joy but has a kinetic feel to it.

Billy Zane’s artwork reveals a free soul

Award-winning actor Billy Zane is displaying his works as part of an exhibition called “Action!” at the Speedy Gallery in Santa Monica. He’s photographed here at his studio behind Old Focals.

illy Zane’s art begins with the spirit of inclusion. The award-winning actor encourages patrons to interact with his works at his current show titled “Action!” on display at the Speedy Gallery in Santa Monica through Saturday, November 26. The title nodding to the correlating between action painting and his cinematic roots. “I always tell people, ‘You’re not allowed to not touch my art,’” said the South Pasadena resident with a laugh. “You might even find an Easter egg of a hidden painting under one. It’s a tactile, pleasing experience, especially with some of the metallic paints I like to use.” The applications have an urgency and force, Zane said. He balances the inherent masculinity of his paintings with the more feminine sense of beauty and balance. Zane said painting and acting complement each other, too. “The painting informs the acting and the acting the painting,” he said. “For the better part of 30 years, I had the pleasure of improvising and creating under pressure on film. I found that that same level of controlled chaos, danger and satisfaction could be found in painting. Especially with a show pending, you have to produce work that are legitimate.” Zane’s raw authenticity in his paintings, drawings and photography have garnered recognition with shows in Los Angeles, London, Budapest, Milan, Miami, and Thessaloniki, Greece. Independent gallery owner Yiwei Lu curated the exhibition for the Speedy Gallery’s owner Atsushi Fukuda. Lu and Zane were introduced by mutual friend, Venice entrepreneur Todd Collins. “I didn’t know he had 150 (movie) titles to his credit,” Lu said laughing. “I introduced myself to him as a curator and he was introduced to me as an artist. I asked to see his work and I was just really, really impressed by it. They’re so free. It just seems like he doesn’t care about any rules. When I looked up from the artwork, I realized who he was. He was a villain in ‘Titanic’ whose character didn’t like art. It’s so funny because Billy is the opposite of that.” The two met again at Zane’s outdoor studio behind Old Focals, a South Pasadena optical shop that provides eyewear to all the top films. “He’s created a clubhouse atmosphere and it makes me love creating there,” Zane said of its owner, friend Russ Campbell. “My home is nearby. Being part of the South Pas village informs my work with the nostalgia, charm and creativity the community is synonymous with. When not adorning the eyes of the hip and famous, the Old Focals family — Russ, Jessica and Rick (Barzell of the Cretin Hop, vinyl DJ collective)—screen movies, throw parties and have barbecues.” The legitimacy of the work is evident and celebrated by experienced gallerists and neighbors at Bergamot. They are supportive of Lu and her activities and Zane as an artist whose works are easily identifiable. “I’m grateful for the response by the celebrated Bergamot gallerists like John

Berman, Craig Krull, William Turner and Billy Gross, whose encouragement has been most generous while hosting tremendous exhibitions currently themselves,” he said. “I encourage everyone to come and vist all the galleries in an extended Bergamot stay. “I’m most grateful to Atsushi and Yumi, who afforded an extensive and extended exhibition running from September 10 to November 26.” Bold juxtapositions His abstract expressionist paintings are bold juxtapositions of kinetic application and elegantly balanced color combination derived from both intentional and naturally occurring contradictory influences. “He’s a total rule breaker,” Lu said. “Not a lot of artists paint outdoors. He lays his paintings on the ground, steps on them, puts his fingerprints on them. Everything you would not want an artist to do, he does that. “He sometimes drives over his canvases. He cares about the moment, which is cool. It really shows his free soul.” It’s all in the name of joyous improvisation and sustainability. Zane started painting on the set of “Titanic,” Lu said. He uses discarded materials like coffee bags, patio umbrellas, signage, crates and recycled paint. He turns things that some would throw away into collectibles. It’s like new alchemy. “It’s like from garbage to gold,” said Zane, who is producing and starring in a film about Marlon Brando’s little-known yet impactful work in environmentalism. “I seek out hardware and marine supply stores, which you can find in any village of any country or any town. I always ask about the paint they are throwing away in order to keep it from going into a landfill or local water system. “When the palette being dictated by an unknown source, it is exciting to me. It’s surprising. I’ll always start there and then integrate elements I control.” Zane is grateful for Lu, calling her “visionary and generous” for bringing his art to another gallery’s attention. “It’s lovely to be back at Bergamot Station,” he said. “My first show was there at Frank Pictures Gallery in 2010. It’s so nice to come full circle with a mid-career retrospective, ‘Action!’”

A Pasadena-based visual development artist and illustrator, Andrea Sutjipta was brought onto the team creating the 2023 reboot of “Futurama” as a color designer. She also recently illustrated her first book — achievements she has collected since graduating from ArtCenter College of design last December.

Young Pasadena artist talks joining ‘Futurama’ reboot team

A

ndrea Sutjipta only graduated from university at the end of last year, and she has already garnered significant experience as an artist. The Pasadena-based visual development artist and illustrator joined the Rough Draft Studios team as a color designer for the much-anticipated return of the TV show “Futurama,” while also recently contributing her talents to her first book collaboration. Sutjipta’s ventures come less than a year after receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Illustration-Entertainment with an emphasis in background and prop design from ArtCenter College of Design in December 2021. “It’s a privilege to be able to do all of these things because I know it’s really hard to break into the animation industry,” she said. “For me, I think I’m very fortunate to be able to have the opportunity to work for such a big name show, ‘Futurama,’ and within six months of graduating from university.” In June, Sutjipta was brought onto Rough Draft Studios’ color department to complete the coloring for 10 episodes of the show’s eighth season. The team is aiming to wrap up their portion of the project by the end of 2022. Sutjipta is excited for the opportunity to bring “Futurama” to life, enjoying seeing the new storylines and working alongside both newcomers and seasoned professionals in the industry. “It’s a good combination of the people that worked on the original show, and then newer people coming in,” she said. “So it’s just such an experience watching how people from different departments work together and complete this whole series that has been going on for many, many years.” “Futurama,” which first debuted in 1999, will reboot on Hulu in 2023, a decade after the series finale aired on Comedy Central. The new season will feature the show’s familiar characters and settings through a modern lens. “They’ve always tried to incorporate a lot of pop culture, current events,” Sutjipta said. “Without giving any spoilers, I can say that it is very relatable to both the millennials, like the original viewers from the original show, and Gen Z right now. So I think it’s a really good mixture of both millennial humor and Gen Z humor.”

Sutjipta, a Gen Z “Zoomer” herself, has been watching “Futurama” since she was around middle school-age. Accordingly, her experience on the show’s reboot team has brought waves of nostalgia of earlier times in her life. “I’m just really grateful that I get to be a part of it,” she said. In addition to her role as a “Futurama” artist, Sutjipta lent her artistic abilities to the creation of the children’s novel “The Peonies: Summer in the City.” The book was released over the summer and follows two middle school friends, three dogs and their adventures in New York City before one of the girls moves to California. Written by Jennie Willink and Alix Sloan, it marks Sutjipta’s first illustrative book collaboration. The opportunity arose thanks to one of Sutjipta’s professors at ArtCenter, who reached out to the artist upon recommending her to one of the authors, who was searching for an illustrator. “I agreed immediately because I would love to work on a book cover, because I’d never worked on a book cover before. So that was really exciting,” she said. “We started working and I not only designed an illustrated book cover, I also did the back cover and the interior illustrations.” Mid-October, Sutjipta had the opportunity to host a book promotion event alongside the authors at Hey There Projects art gallery in Joshua Tree. They held a book reading and art exhibition, allowing Sutjipta to showcase some of her work and provide merchandise for guests. “It was a great event and it was really nice, we all had a lot of fun,” she said. Although she is fully focused on her current work with “Futurama,” Sutjipta already has another possible children’s book project lined up when the show is completed at the end of the year. Long-term, she hopes to continue working in the animation industry as a freelance illustrator with her own shop on the side selling prints and merchandise. For more information about Sutjipta or to commission a piece of digital art, visit her Instagram or her website at andreasutjipta.com.

Altadena podcast explores memory loss and sibling love By Bridgette M. Redman Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

S

ometimes even an off-handed comment can inspire an artist to create a piece of work that explores anxieties about relationships and the effects of dementia and Alzheimer’s. For actor and acting coach Barry Papick, it was a visit with his sister in White Plains, New York, that inspired him to write “Breakable,” a short play that is now being aired at Open Door Playhouse, a podcast founded by Bernadette Armstrong during the pandemic to give a home to new and emerging playwrights who found themselves without places to produce their work. “Breakable” is a four-person play in which Conner, a lawyer living in Los Angeles, flies out to a memory care facility to visit his sister Jennifer who has Alzheimer’s and is unable to recognize him. The siblings are played by Papick and Kim Hlavac. Joining them are Leah Jarvak as Sylvie, Jennifer’s daughter, and Justice Davis as Donald, Jennifer’s caretaker. Papick said he was out to coffee with his sister when she told him about a memory lapse. While she and her husband assured Papick it wasn’t common, that night he sat and wrote the entire script for “Breakable.” He said it was in no way a true story, but that he did draw upon his relationship with his sister and explored with Connor what it would be like to not be remembered and whether that would erase the relationship they had. An actor by trade, Papick has written two other scripts — the comedy pilot “Pearl” and the stage play “Ruby’s Arms.” He’s performed in more than 20 feature films, 20 stage plays and many episodic television shows, including “Swan’s Crossing” and “Shameless.” He has been an on-set acting coach for 23 years. After writing “Breakable,” he sent it to Armstrong. He had performed in one of her previous podcasts and wanted to see if she would be interested in it for Open Door. It became the 70th podcast they released and is available at opendoorplayhouse.org/plays Papick thought it would be a great place to start the work that he hopes to eventually shoot as a short film. “I thought (this format) would be interesting and different,” Papick said. “It’s very character-driven. Obviously in a podcast it’s got to be character driven. I think it’s going to work out pretty well.” In the piece, Papick explores themes of loss, particularly the loss that Conner felt. “He’s worried about losing everything they had together,” Papick said. “When he entered the situation, he entered it late because she was already institutionalized. He worried that they had gone through this whole life together and it wasn’t going to be remembered. I think that was his biggest fear, that she wouldn’t remember the history they had together.” It’s a fear that Papick shares, explaining that he and his sister have a lot of history together and he worries about what would happen with memory loss and whether it would eliminate not only their history, but all the love they felt for each other. It was important to him, he said, to communicate both the love that a brother and sister have for each other and the love that an uncle and niece have for each other. He worked on how, in a short period of time, to establish and communicate that love and bond. Conner, like Papick, moved to California while his sister and her family stayed behind in New York. The characters talk about how the cousins barely know each other and that they miss each other because of the distance. “I think what Conner discovers is that you can’t leave the past behind,” Papick said. “It hurts to leave the past behind. Here he is, a guy who has gone on this fantastic journey, gotten married and has two kids. You hope that he could just move on to a new life, but you can’t leave your old life behind you.” Papick worked with Jarvak and recommended her to Armstrong, who directed the piece. While he hadn’t worked with Hlavac before, he was pleased with how it turned out. “Once Kim and I got together, it worked really well. There was a real beauty to the relationship,” Papick said. “Just being able to work live with somebody was really wonderful.”

And while he wrote much of the play in first person about his own relationship with his sister, once he took on the role of Conner, he brought his 40 years of acting experience to play and began to look at other relationships, exploring the character in a different way and figuring out how different deliveries would land. When he does go back to shoot this as a short film, he said he would like to add some flashbacks to further investigate the life of the sister and brother, showing past events rather than just talking about them. In addition to the artistic staff, David Peters was the sound engineer, AudioJungle provided the sound effects and Karaoke Version provide the music. It was recorded at The Oak House Studio in Altadena. In addition to the “Breakable” podcast, there is an archive of 67 previous podcasts at Open-Door Playhouse website, all featuring what Armstrong describes as fresh new writing and skilled audio performances. There is no paywall at the site. All podcasts are available for free, though they welcome tax-deductible donations to help keep the podcasts coming. Armstrong wants it to be a place where playwrights without agents can have a place to test their work, a place that has, as the name implies, an open door. “We strive to bring our listeners thoughtful and surprising one-act plays and ten-minute shorts that showcase insightful and new perspectives of the world we share with others,” a statement from them explained.

n celebration of local nonprofit Children of One Planet’s 22-year anniversary, founder Azita Milanian hosted a gala at the William D. Davies Memorial Building in Altadena on Oct. 22. The event, which featured live performances from local musicians like Flamenco Soul and acclaimed singers and dancers from around the world as well as food from restaurants across the San Gabriel Valley, served as a fundraiser for the nonprofit’s Dance for Hope America campaign, whose mission is to bring dancing, music and motivational talks to families. Milanian created Children of One Planet after discovering an abandoned baby on the side of a trail in the San Gabriel Mountains in 1998 and saving its life. “I never felt such a connection ever in my life,” Milanian recalled. “That’s changed my whole life altogether.” She felt inspired to quit her job in engineering at JPL and dedicate her life to protect children around the world from hunger and violence.
