Play Ball!
I
t’s March, and I ask you: Is there a better month in Arizona? From the pleasantly warm afternoons to the hundreds of
scheduled events and multitude of activities done outdoors,
March is the Valley’s last month of unadulterated enjoyment
before Mother Nature turns up the furnace.
For starters, Spring
Training baseball kicks off this month, a time of optimism and hope for every team.
The Valley now boasts 15 pro teams playing at 10 different
stadiums. In 1990, there were only eight teams calling the
Cactus League home, numbers that have nearly doubled…much to the delight of baseball enthusiasts and local businesses.
For many residents and out-of-town visitors, there is nothing
more enjoyable than a lazy afternoon at the ballpark watching
nine innings with a hot dog and a cold beer. The Cactus League
drew more than 1.68 million fans in 2014 and its economic impact has been estimated anywhere between $300 million and $600 million to the Valley.
March is also the launching pad for many outdoor events like
beer, culinary and music festivals. The gears are churning for the
marquee event, the Scottsdale Culinary Festival, which takes place April 7 through 12.

So much is debated about the merits of the Scottsdale
Culinary Festival, the father of all Arizona foodie festivals. Most associate the festival with the Great Picnic on the lawn of the
Civic Center Mall. However, event organizers, Airpark-based
Scottsdale League for the Arts, want you to know the festival is
so much more—there is an entire week’s worth of culinary events showcasing the Valley’s elite chefs creating gastronomic delights. If you attend, please tell us about it on Facebook and Twitter. Here’s to March! Enjoy the issue.

SPRING CLEANING Q: It’s spring cleaning time and I’m not sure if I should throw all my household linens into my machine. Any suggestions? A: Washing household items at home can have disappointing results. Bedspreads & comforters are often too large for a home washing machine, and they might shrink. But Prestige Cleaners will maintain the shape of your bedding, tablecloths and other household linens. Comforters should be stored in a dark, dry area and in a clean container, not the plastic dry-cleaning bag.

very year, the Scottsdale Culinary Festival glides gracefully through the Valley’s perfectly ripened days of spring like one of the swans that favor the fountains at the Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza—swimming along with pride and purpose, regal in its command of the current waters, no matter how murky or unsettled. Or maybe it moves like another waterfowl. “I liken the event to a duck,” says Jerry McMahon, board president of the Scottsdale League for the Arts, hosts of the event that is celebrating its 37th anniversary this April. “Above the surface it’s moving very gracefully...very calm and placid. But underneath the water, its feet are paddling like crazy!” That’s also a fitting description of how the tiny Scottsdale League for the Arts office, nestled in a nondescript industrial cul-de-sac in the shadow of the Scottsdale Airpark, operates at this time of year. On the surface, the Scottsdale Culinary Festival, a five-day foodie fiesta that consistently ranks as one of the top annual city events in all the travel guides, appears to be the product of a big, well-oiled machine with the influence and capital to corral the best chefs, tastemakers and culinary visionaries in town.

In actuality, the event is put on by a bare-bones staff of three office workers and a temp, managing an offsite crew of about 62 unpaid volunteers. “I’ve been in the league 14 years now,” says McMahon, a retired business executive and one of the volunteer members. “And I’m amazed, year after year, at the amount of effort that goes on behind the scenes. We have a lot of young entrepreneurs who just give an inordinate amount of time to a volunteer nonprofit organization.” Lately though, a few ripples in the water have been rocking the duck. Young Yelp commenters have not been entirely kind to the SCF, criticizing the festival’s signature weekend event, the Great Arizona Picnic, for high food and drink prices and for featuring chain restaurants like Buffalo Wild Wings, Dos Gringos and Chipotle over local indies. Other food festivals, including some with more hipster cache, have been competing for the epicurean crowd around the Valley. In addition, the league’s accountability and transparency rankings have been befouled by the leading charity watchdog group. Heck, even the SCF’s longheld stake as the “nation’s longest-running culinary arts festival” is now challenged in Wikipedia, which gives Taste of Cincinnati that honor. For the record, the first Scottsdale Culinary Festival (then called Festival of the Culinary Arts) was held in January 1979—four months ahead of Cincinnati’s first fest. While the unwelcome jabs haven’t exactly ruffled the old bird’s feathers, its neck is clearly craned to observe the changes in the wind. “We do take note of the comments that are made, and we do ask ourselves, ‘How do we do our best to overcome that?’” says McMahon. “It’s a question of understanding the dynamics of what’s going on in the community. And we try to stay up with what’s happening. But things are definitely changing.”
Spreading the wealth
“The biggest misconception people have about the festival is that we’re making money on this,” says league treasurer Dan Bowman, another uncompensated volunteer who runs his own architectural design firm in Scottsdale. “The one question we always hear is, ‘How much do you get paid?’ Most people don’t know that we’re a volunteer organization, and that all net proceeds go to local charities.” Perhaps the skeptics are spending too much time on the Web. Watchdog group Charity Navigator gives the league a dismal 0 out of 4 stars in its rating and claims …continues on page 22

…continued from page 21 it has the highest overhead of any nonprofit in the country (98.5 percent of its proceeds in 2011). But general manager Lindsey Friend says that figure fails to take into account the unusual way the fundraising organization is structured. “We’re not structured like, say, the Boys & Girls Club, where they’re taking donations and then putting that directly into their program,” she says. “We have our operating account where the money that we collect from the tickets we sell goes into actually producing the event. And then we have sponsors that underwrite a portion of it, which is where the net proceeds come from.” Charity Navigator writes off the festival as “fundraising” and says it accounts for 82 percent of its funds usage. The event is actually the vehicle for raising money through the sponsorship program, which regularly draws in many of the city’s top media outlets, hotels and national food and drink producers eager to reach more than the 40,000 attendees the event averages. Participating restaurants kick in 50 percent of their take, too, putting the proceeds way above the festival’s cost. All told, the SCF has contributed more than $4 million to local arts organizations
in the past 14 years. In 2014, the league donated $184,100 to 40 organizations. Managing which organizations get a share of that is another colossal annual undertaking for the league. Friend says the group begins lining up benefactors for the upcoming festival as soon as they finish writing checks dispersing the take from the last one. “We have a grant program that’s open for two months after the festival,” she says. “It opens in mid-June and finishes in August. We have a lot of new organizations that find out about us and then apply for grants. And we have a grants committee that goes through all the applications and see if it’s a right fit.” A few of the same charities appear on the list every year. The SLA contributes regularly to Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona, a program that pairs abused, neglected and at-risk kids with professional artists who help them find their creative “release valves” and build self-esteem through artistic expression. The league also funds The Art of Healing, a program that teaches art to children hospitalized at Banner Health’s Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa. But each year a few new ones are added and a few drop off. Proceeds collected from this year’s festival will be split between 40 organizations, helping to fund everything from music (Jazz in Arizona, Rosie’s House and MusicaNova) to theater (Arizona Theatre Company, Childsplay and Stray Cat Theatre) to visual arts (Phoenix Art Museum, Scottsdale Public Art and the Phoenix Institute for Contemporary Art). “We’re not solely focused on just donating to one group,” explains Bowman. “There’s such a wide spectrum of what art is considered to be, from painting to ballet to the culinary arts,” he adds, pointing out the parallel between the food festival and the organizations that benefit from it. “We’ve done very well over the years. So we’re able to spread that out a bit.”

“A decade ago, it was just us,” says McMahon, describing the national obsession with artisan cooking and quirky eating options that have sprung up over the last few years. “Now there are all these foodie events that go on these days. We do our best to keep ourselves ‘fresh’ among all the other events that are available—Devoured, the food truck events,

the taco events. They’ve sprung up everywhere in the past few years.” The league’s big event, the Great Arizona Picnic, has lately been taking some lumps from reviewers on Yelp (ironically a sponsor this year), who complain about the chain restaurants and “runof-the-mill downtown Scottsdale bars” represented over more deserving independent local eateries. Bowman says they always feature a good share of small neighborhood favorites, but adds that the festival needs some bigger players too, just to feed the big crowds the weekend picnic event draws. “We can kind of pick and choose which restaurants we feature, and we try to work with the same patrons that have been partners with us for years,” he says. “But when we have 40 or 50 restaurants out there, not every one of them can be local mom and pop shops, because they can’t all support this type of event. A lot of those smaller places that everybody loves as great community spots can’t support the crowd that we bring out for them, so sometimes we need to have some of those chains.” The demographics at the Great Arizona Picnic have been changing, too. Whereas roughly half of the attendees used to be over 40 and above the $150,000 income range, today’s crowd—reflecting the general demographics around Old Town
Scottsdale on the weekends—is younger and, unfortunately, drawn more to the drinking stations. This doesn’t fit with the family-friendly theme the event aims to project, but Bowman says they work closely with the Scottsdale police and the Arizona Department of Liquor License & Control to keep an eye on underage drinking and general over-indulgers. “There is a lot more drinking,” he admits, “but we’ve gotten way better on monitoring everything. We want to make sure our brand, our reputation, is still intact at the end of the event.” Friend also points out that the festival comprises much more today than just the weekend picnic. “Our signature event is the Great Arizona Picnic, that’s the event most people associate with the Scottsdale Culinary Festival,” she says. “But we do have events all through the week leading up to that weekend, held at different places all around Scottsdale and even Phoenix.” The week kicks off Tuesday night with a craft cocktail party at the trendy Degree 270 nightclub atop the Talking Stick
Resort, followed by the Chocolate & Wine Experience at the Musical Instrument Museum in north Phoenix (a 2015 grant recipient) on Wednesday. On Thursday there’s the return of the popular Burger Battle cook-off at the Hotel Valley Ho and the Bubbles & Bliss champagne soiree at the W Scottsdale, and on Friday it’s the Eat Drink & Be Pretty fashion show at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. “You can really customize your experience,” says Bowman. “We have everything from the picnic for a $10 entrance fee to a $225 dinner. Some people we’ll see every night of the week. They have such a great time at one event, they want to see if they can have an even better time at the next one.”
Beyond the fest
The league is also expanding its events well beyond festival week. “Two years ago, we took an event that we used to do at the center, Cooks & Corks, and decided to do it in the fall at the Four Seasons,” McMahon notes. “Four years ago, we decided to move the James Beard dinner, …continues on page 24

We decided next year, every board member gets four to five checks and goes out personally to these organizations to show our appreciation.” For Friend, the personal contact brings to life the impact the league has on the outcomes of the organizations it helps— something that can’t be measured in a simple star ranking on Charity Navigator. With 10 U.S. locations, three locations in the United Kingdom and 10 more in the works—including a spectacular version planned for the Las Vegas strip—Dallasbased Topgolf has aligned a brilliant business plan with exceptional marketing, rapidly making a name for itself as the place to go for golfers and nongolfers. Its original founders—golf-loving twin brothers Steve and Dave Jolliffe from London—conceived the idea of a driving range that offered more than an old bucket of balls and nondescript grass lot. They

The games vary, but the scoring system is set up so that each player can hit 20 balls per game. So players can compete with friends in their group, try to beat their best scores from previous outings and climb the “leader board” capturing everyone playing at that particular location. Since its launch in 2000, the entertainment hotspot has won accolade after accolade, not to mention a loyal following with 1 million-plus email subscribers, 242,000 Facebook followers and 92,000 mobile app downloads. It attracted more than 4 million visitors worldwide in 2014 and the numbers keep growing exponentially. So why is Topgolf resonating so well with consumers? “It’s the competition and fun of sports, combined with the friendly atmosphere of your favorite neighborhood hangout, and then mixed with a dash of really great food and drink,” says Hana Khouri, the director of operations at the Scottsdale location. “And, to me, the most important thing is that you don’t have to be good at golf to have a great
time at Topgolf.” The Scottsdale Topgolf offers 102 climate-controlled hitting bays, as well as 230 HD flat-screen TVs, a rooftop terrace with fire pits and private party rooms. Another reason for Topgolf’s success is that it is more than just a technology-enhanced driving range experience. Every location has its own executive chef and premium food and beverage selections, giving even nongolfers a reason to partake in the fun. “This is not your typical sports bar kind of food,” Khouri says. “Our goal is food on par with the best restaurants in town. The same goes for our beverage offerings. We research local breweries to bring in the best beer on tap and have a wine list that is every bit what you would find at an upscale restaurant.” With golf tournaments, daytime clinics for kids, Monday evening leagues, themed costume parties, and live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night on the rooftop

It has been so successful, in fact, that Topgolf opened a facility in Gilbert last December. “Topgolf has none of the pressure that is often associated with playing golf,” Khouri says. “You can wear what you want and be as loud as you want. If you hit a bad shot, no one has to go looking in the woods for it. You just hit your next shot, and no one cares. Additionally, you can easily come out and play Topgolf

Many Who Lost Homes Now Qualify for Mortgages By Rod Dennis
32 | Scottsdale Airpark News March 2015
F
ormer President George W. Bush once said, “America is the land of the second chance …” He was speaking about the opportunities available to those who had been freed from incarceration. Yet the second chance is also applicable to another group, one that instead of being “locked up” has been “locked out”—former homeowners who have been unable to qualify for a mortgage due to bankruptcy, foreclosure or short sale. For many people who lost their homes for these reasons, their days in housing purgatory are over or coming to an end. That’s because most lenders require a long waiting period for borrowers who faced foreclosure. And this year marks

the end of that seven-year waiting period for the first group of people to lose their homes during the crash. The seven-year wait period applies to borrowers seeking conventional mortgages who lost their homes in foreclosure and, therefore, were in default. Those who lost their homes on a short sale can qualify for a conventional loan after a four-year wait. However, all these waiting periods can be shortened due to extenuating circumstances such as job loss, a divorce, serious illness or the death of the person who was the primary wage earner. According to a recent article in the Arizona Republic, a research report says as many as 350,000 “boomerang buyers”—so called because they were tossed

out of the housing market but are reentering—could purchase homes in the Phoenix area in the next seven years. That’s about as many Valley houses that were foreclosed on or sold through short sales during the crash. Many boomerang buyers are already back and have been for some time. That’s because the rules for borrowing are more lenient for Federal Housing Admistration and Veterans Affairs loans. For FHA, the waiting period is three years for short sale and four years for a foreclosure. VA loans have the most lenient rules: just a two-year waiting period to qualify for a new mortgage. If you lost your home because of bankruptcy, foreclosure or short sale and want

SOHO Scottsdale to Bring an Urban Vibe to the Bell Road Corridor By Leslie Tweeton
L
uxury real estate developer Irene Clary and renowned architect Bing Hu will soon break ground on their fourth collaboration: SOHO Scottsdale, an urban live-work-play community just east of Bell Road and the Loop 101. In early December, the Scottsdale City Council granted approval for the project, which will include 64 townhomes with residential units atop offices, an office/ retail hub and 14 luxurious lofts located in a separate four-story condo building with office and retail below. Council members and Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane expressed enthusiasm for the project. “We are a thriving city and always
have been, and we evolve in a smart and responsible way,” Lane says. “That’s what we are seeing here. SOHO is innovative and progressive, and it is also responsive to the live-work-thrive success stories we have seen around the country.” For this particular project, Clary, a native of Toronto, and Hu, who was born in Beijing, drew on their mutual passion for urban, contemporary communities that bring home-based professionals together in a creative and collaborative environment. “This type of project is all over Asia but different than any other development in Arizona,” Hu says. “SOHO will be the coolest building in the city of Scottsdale.
We are pioneering something that has never been done here.” The project is designated “live, work, play” so residents can work from home and walk to major businesses and venues along the Bell Road corridor, including WestWorld, the Ice Den and AZ on the Rocks, an indoor rock-climbing gym. Clary, the president of Catclar Investments, says project officials researched “work-live” projects in other cities and “brought some design elements back that will make this project unique from an architectural standpoint.” Townhomes range from approximately 2,500 to 3,200 square feet, with private rooftop decks and optional spas offering …continues on page 36

views of the McDowell Mountains and surrounding desert landscape. Unlike most home offices tucked away in a second bedroom or spread across a kitchen table, SOHO Scottsdale’s threeand four-story townhomes have a generous, designated space for businesses on the ground floor, with roll-up doors that open up to an elegant courtyard. Customer parking is provided and business signage is welcomed. In addition to the townhomes, 14 loftstyle residences will be located above office/retail space. Characterized by open floor plans and 11-foot ceilings, these homes may be customized up to 12,000 square feet per floor with direct elevator access to each suite. With pre-wiring for a security system, surround sound and Smart Home features throughout each unit, every element of the environment, from music and lighting to security and temperature, can be controlled by a mobile device. The community’s technology backbone provides the tools necessary to work remotely, virtually or at home. Standard interior finishes include granite countertops, Bosch stainless steel appliances, Kohl plumbing fixtures and other elements that would be considered upgrades in most communities. An integral part of SOHO Scottsdale will be a centralized executive office with concierge business services. Plans call for the office to have a reception area with a full-time receptionist and conference rooms. Administrative services will also be available. Plans for the commercial hub include a coffee and pastry shop, a juice bar and a bistro. Reservations are currently being accepted. Construction start is scheduled for early summer 2015. Personal Touch
“Pulse Fitness has built its reputation on employing a highly qualified team of personal trainers who believe in continued education in order to provide the best coaching to help clients,” Lyons notes. “While we will expand our services to include several classes, at our core, we are still a personal training gym.” Pulse Fitness has a team of experts ready to help prospective and current members navigate the gym and understand nutritional information, exercise programs and proper recovery.
Classes
High-intensity, team-training programs will be continued and expanded at the new facility to maximize use of the additional space. To better serve their members in the new facility, Pulse will have a boutique-style cycle and yoga studio in addition to personal training and boot camps. Pulse Fitness utilizes the MYZONE heart-rate monitoring system in conjunction with the personal and team training programs to encourage effort throughout the session. Additionally, for anyone looking to improve flexibility and mobility, one-on-one assisted stretching will be offered as Fascial Stretch Therapy.
Nutrition
Another exciting addition, a smoothie bar within the facility will focus on serving healthy, nutritionally whole and delicious protein smoothies and shakes. “Nutrition is a critical component for total wellness, performance, recovery and optimal results. We want to offer people access to healthy and nutritious wholefood options,” says Lyons. The Pulse Fitness team is leading the fitness industry with its unique approach to training. “With our growing team and larger facility, we will continue to offer the highest quality of training services,” Lyons states. “Our new location will allow us to provide additional, innovative training tools, resources and techniques which will help our members accomplish their goals.” The team at Pulse Fitness is excited to share with you its brand-new facility and invites you to join the community, to experience total fitness and well-being. mericans love sandwiches. They make the perfect lunchtime meal: They’re served fast and inexpensive, they can be consumed in a short amount of time, and they’re darn tasty. So I was enthusiastic to try the Potbelly Sandwich Shop off Scottsdale Road, just south of Thunderbird Road. Potbelly is a retro-style counter-service sandwich shop dishing out toasty warm sandwiches made with hand-sliced meats and cheeses. Potbelly has a casual, relaxed vibe. The interior is peppered with retro photos and trinkets. The original Potbelly was housed in a Chicago antique store, so new stores are designed to pay homage to its roots. As you enter the double doors, you’re immediately drawn to the big board—the oversized menu mounted on the wall that outlines “How to Potbelly.” You choose between regular, whole grain or thin-cut bread to go with one of their “signature” or “favorites” sandwiches. Under the big board is a double refrigerator case stocked with bottled pop, juice, iced tea and water. Grab one if you’re not a fan of fountain sodas. There are 11 sandwich options. Potbelly’s signature sandwich is the A-Wreck ($5) stuffed with salami, roast beef, turkey, ham and Swiss cheese. That’s the one people talk about, so I ordered it. After you order, you then shimmy along the counter to the topping station, where you select your veggies, like lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles and hot peppers, and condiments like mayo, Italian seasoning, oil and mustard. Premium extras include bacon, mushrooms and double meat. I had them pile my A-Wreck with all the above-mentioned toppings, except mayo and oil. Potbelly’s hot peppers give the sandwich a nice little kick. A bag of vinegar and salt potato chips seemed like the perfect complement, along with a cold fountain drink to wash it down. On the right side of the sand-

wich shop is the dining area, a mix of a dozen or so wooden tables and chairs and high-tops. We sat down with our tray of goodies, and dug in. My A-Wreck was the first thing to get devoured. I’ve tasted various combinations of this sandwich, but never quite this mix—and I can see why it’s a favorite. It’s a meat-lovers delight and hearty enough to satisfy any appetite. For those who love salty cured Italian meats, the Italian ($5) is a winner: capicola, mortadella, pepperoni, salami and provolone cheese. The rest of my crew ordered the grilled chicken Mediterranean ($6.20)—a grilled chicken breast topped with feta cheese, hummus, artichokes, cucumbers and roasted red peppers—and the Pizza Sandwich ($5.25), comprising pepperoni, meatballs, capicola, marinara sauce, mushrooms, provolone cheese and Italian seasoning. Both got a thumbs-up. For lighter tastes, Potbelly carries turkey breast ($4.80) and smoked ham ($4.80) sandwiches. And if you want to go ever lighter, order one of these with Potbelly’s “thin-cut” bread, which has one-third less bread and carbohydrates. For salad lovers, Potbelly prepares five different salads (with or without chicken), including The Farmhouse ($7.35). It was prepared just the way I like it: fresh lettuce topped with grilled chicken breast, hardboiled egg, bacon, blue cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers and red onion. To round out your meal, Potbelly also carries soups, chili, side salads, shakes, cookies and fruit smoothies. The bottom line: Potbelly serves up tasty toasted deli sandwiches for lunch with fast, friendly service—nothing more, nothing less.

f you think our ties to the “City by the Bay” began with the San Francisco Giants training here in 1982, you might be surprised to learn our links date back as far as the 1860s. Every March, the influx of Bay Area residents is a home run for Valley hoteliers, merchants and baseball fans. This year, Scottsdale is again excited to welcome back the defending World Series Champion Giants as they hold their Spring Training games at Scottsdale Stadium for the 34th season.

Consider these bits of Scottsdale-Bay area historic ties: In 1865, the Army of the Pacific, headquartered in San Francisco, established a U.S. Army post in the central Arizona Territory. It was named in honor of the Army of the Pacific’s Commander, Maj. Gen. Irvin McDowell. He visited his namesake post, Fort McDowell, in February 1866. McDowell not only encouraged the establishment of a hay camp to provide food for his soldiers and horses (a settlement that became Phoenix), he also began a great friendship with the chief of the Pimas, bringing him to San Francisco for a visit. We continue to honor his impact with the names of Fort McDowell, the

McDowell Mountains, McDowell Road and everything else “McDowell.” San Francisco also has a McDowell Road (walk it between the Maritime Museum and Fort Mason) and had a Fort McDowell. McDowell is buried in San Francisco’s Presidio Cemetery. Before rail service was available to Central Arizona (circa 1887), U.S. Army personnel and their families, as well as other early settlers, had a long and arduous, multimodal journey to the Salt River Valley. Many took a steamship from San Francisco around Baja California to the mouth of the Colorado River. From there, they would caravan across the desert to Fort McDowell and other settlements in horse-drawn wagons. Army wife Martha Summerhayes documented this perilous adventure in her book, “Vanishing Arizona.” In 1888, a gregarious Civil War infantry veteran turned Army chaplain—Winfield Scott—was posted to Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay. Since Scott was active in veterans’ affairs and a frequent speaker at Civil War reunions, the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce invited him to

visit the Salt River Valley to see the great opportunities for veterans and their families. He came, he saw, and he and his wife Helen filed to homestead land along the newly-completed Arizona Canal. Although the Scotts enjoyed the Army, as well as the social and family lifestyle in San Francisco, they retired in Arizona and established a farming community that has blossomed into Scottsdale. Winfield Scott was a great promoter of tourism, and perhaps he would approve of the strong tourism ties Scottsdale enjoys with Bay Area residents. Coincidentally, there was a Fort Winfield Scott adjacent to The Presidio in San Francisco, but it wasn’t named for “our” Scott. Established in 1912, it honored Lt. Gen. Winfield “Fuss and Feathers” Scott, who served as a leader in the War with Mexico and was Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army prior to the Civil War. After working several years in the San Francisco area, he and his family moved first to Mesa, then to Scottsdale in 1928 to operate a grocery store, Chew’s, at the northeast corner of Brown Avenue and Main Street. Members of the family continue to operate a store at that location today, now called Mexican Imports. Scottsdale—a haven for artists since Marjorie Thomas arrived from Boston in 1909—sent artists and artwork to participate in San Francisco’s Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1914-15 and the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island in 1939-40. In the June 1939 issue of Arizona Highways, Stephen Shadegg wrote, “With Treasure Island on the west coast of the United States as a magnetic attraction, hundreds of thousands of Midwesterners will traverse Arizona this summer on their way to and from the fair. The extent of this travel has already been felt, for April travel figures of this year already exceed those of last year.” As Scottsdale grew as a center for arts, crafts and fashion, more links developed between the two cities, their museums, galleries and art schools. Countless local residents have attended Stanford (such as Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and her late husband John; Phil Schneider, Jr., John Berry and others) and University of California-Berkeley (such as former Scottsdale City Council member Betty Drake). The Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce’s Tourism Division and the Scottsdale Charros hosted major league baseball owners, general managers and officials while in San Francisco, promoting Scottsdale as a potential site for annual baseball owners’ meetings. In October 1989, the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A’s met in the World Series. During game three of the series, the Loma Prieta earthquake struck, rattling San Francisco’s Candlestick Park and postponing the rest of the series. The quake also shook up Scottsdalians attending the game, including Bob Howard and his son, Jack Crowe and his two children and Dick Collins. Scottsdale Stadium, completely rebuilt in 1991, was dedicated in time for the 1992 San Francisco Giants spring training season. For the first time, spring training games could be played at night, since one of the major enhancements at the new stadium was lighting. Other improvements included more and larger restrooms, more concession areas, offices, an enclosed press box that could be used for meetings, and enhanced locker rooms. A brick façade replaced the old wooden façade of the original ballpark. Seating capacity was expanded to 10,000, including grassy berm seating area in the outfield. The new Scottsdale Stadium set higher standards for Cactus League baseball parks, and the stadium’s voter-approved funding is often credited with saving the Cactus League. The public was invited to tour the new stadium on Feb. 29. Then Major League Baseball Commissioner Fay

Matt Cain and many others. From 1992 to 1997, the Phoenix Firebirds, the minor league affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, played Pacific Coast League summer games at Scottsdale Stadium, moving from its previous home at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The Firebirds eventually moved from Scottsdale to Fresno, California. During the Cactus League season and throughout the year, Bay Area folks love to visit Scottsdale. To remind them of Scottsdale during their daily commute, San Francisco area residents are treated to Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau ads on subway cars and at subway stations. ow well do you know your city? Have you ever wondered about the nuts and bolts that make Scottsdale such a dynamic city to live, work and play? I grew up in Scottsdale, attended our city’s schools and have worked closely with City leaders for years. I really thought I had a good handle on what made Scottsdale tick. Then I was introduced to Scottsdale Leadership, a nonprofit organization developed to inform, inspire and empower leaders to champion and strengthen the interests of our community. Going through Scottsdale Leadership’s Core Program, a nine-month interactive community leadership program, was a game changer for me. It deepened my understanding of community issues and strengthened my ability to impact change through meaningful partnerships and positive community leadership.

Scottsdale Leadership’s Core Program includes more than 15 topic days where you will learn about the interrelated dimensions that make up a community. Learn about education (it’s a hot topic right now in Scottsdale), economic development, social services, healthcare, City government, public safety and Scottsdale’s invaluable arts community. The “ah-ha” moment for me came when I was participating in a simulated hostage situation with the Scottsdale Police Department’s staff on Public Safety Day. I can’t imagine a more in-depth experience that changed my perception about the responsibilities of our City’s public safety professionals. Through involvement with Scottsdale Leadership’s Core Program, I gained a more complete understanding about the issues that impact our community and the individuals who help shape our standard of living.

Desert Women’s Care By Lynette Carrington

Dr, Richard Demir

any factors can cause pelvic pain in women. Through a series of thorough diagnostic evaluations, Dr. Richard Demir and the professional staff at Desert Women’s Care take the time and effort to connect with patients and properly diagnose pelvic pain. They can address the cause—or causes—with minimally invasive procedures. Each patient is tested thoroughly, which is of paramount importance in diagnosing them. “We begin in a multi-organ system manner. It takes about four to eight weeks to progress through the initial evaluation,” says Demir, who earned his doctorate at Rush Medical College and completed his residency in OB-GYN at
Mount Sinai Medical Center. “By that point, we’ve evaluated every organ system because 70 percent of cases of chronic female pelvic pain are of gynecological origin and 30 percent are not. Just going in with gynecologic blinders causes people to miss those 30 percent of the cases.” Some pelvic pain can originate from a variety of sources or disorders, but a majority of cases stem from endometriosis, a condition where cells that line the inside of the uterus grow in an area outside of the uterus. Possible gynecologic, urologic, gastroenterological and neurologic origins of pelvic pain are all explored during the journey of arriving at a diagnosis for a patient. Some patients who have been dealing with pelvic pain for some time have
businessspotlight
received prescriptions for narcotics on previous occasions from other doctors, but Demir seeks a more complete diagnosis of the patient to address the problems before prescribing drugs to address the pain. “In the absence of being able to treat the root cause of the pain, most of these people have been put on a variety of narcotics,” states Demir. “At some point, they need them because nobody’s addressed the root cause of their pain and they’re habituated to the narcotics.” “We try to come up with a balanced analgesic regimen that is appropriate to the patient and we’ve got some new tools for that,” says Demir. “Nowadays, we can do genetic tests that kind of tell us which drugs a patient is able to metabolize well and which ones they’re not. It’s a very good thing with a lot of positive correlation.”
If a patient is taking large doses of a narcotic that they do not metabolize well, it can cause organ damage. Determining what pain medication may work best for the individual patient’s pain level and unique metabolizing abilities is just one piece of the puzzle in treating pelvic pain. Once the root causes of pelvic pain are discovered and if surgery is indeed recommended, minimally invasive procedures done through small incisions can deliver favorable outcomes, less post-op pain and a quicker recovery time. Some of the procedures that can be performed without open abdominal surgery include hysterectomies, adnexectomies and sacrocolpopexies. Desert Women’s Care is in a league of its own in terms of the scope of its treatments.
“There really is no other program that does what we do,” Demir says. “It’s a niche. I think it’s an important niche because there are so many people that don’t have a solution, get narcotic habituated and it just consumes their life. The goal is to make someone as functional as possible and as soon as possible.” The comprehensive multi-organ system evaluation is the beginning of a journey to put patients back into a state of comfort. Desert Women’s Care accepts most insurances and is located at 9377 E. Bell Road., Suite 131, in Scottsdale. Call (480) 559-4776 or visit www.desertwomenscare.com for additional information.

s we age, one of the primary concerns affecting many of us in retirement should be the increasing possibility we will require some measure of long-term care during our latter years. When it comes to thinking about finances, it is not uncommon for clients to overlook the need to address the financial risks of illness. There are good reasons to be concerned. On the one hand, people are living longer, yet on the other hand, seven out of 10 people over the age of 65 will need long-term care assistance at some point, according to government statistics. Neurological diseases like dementia, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s are claiming 53 percent of 80 year olds, with the other top causes of long-term care events resulting in extended stays in rehabilitation centers, frequently forcing sufferers into care situations that are largely outside their control. Most people in these circumstances want to feel that they have choices in how and where they receive their care,
financialfundamentals whether in their own homes, through an assisted living facility, or a nursing home. The subject of long-term care requires a discussion that encompasses who will provide care, where it will take place and how it can be funded. Unfortunately, Medicare or Medicaid won’t normally offer the level of choices many feel they need. It may be easy to forget that Medicare is a health insurance plan that only covers long-term care following a three-day admitted hospital stay with discharge orders for skilled care, and then only for the first 100 days thereafter. Medicaid, which is designed to help the fiscally poor, requires that the assets you and your spouse have spent years saving for your retirement must first be spent down. Furthermore, facilities with Medicaid approved beds are limited, resulting in a situation where family members must often drive many hours to visit an aging parent or spouse. For those who plan to depend on their family to care for them, the statistics suggest many difficulties and sacrifices
are ahead, placing a toll on the family caregiver that can become overwhelming. Studies have shown that when the spouse is the caretaker, it is the caring spouse who is more likely to become ill from the stress, often passing away sooner than the person for whom they are tending. Relying on other family members for supplemental care and assistance can often undermine them in unintended ways. Although adult children may resolve to keep their parents at home, doing so means they will inevitably give up other aspects of their own lives. At the extreme, they could end up losing out on promotions and wages, as well as missing out on significant family events. Even with all of these
factors in mind, many who are only now exploring traditional indemnity long-term care insurance have ended up deciding against it. With the likelihood that at least 50 percent of people who purchase long-term care will need to use it, LTC insurance is an option that frequently carries understandably high costs; enough to devour retirement assets at an alarming rate. In an effort to balance the high cost of funding with the likelihood of need over the years, we have explored multiple options with our clients. Long-term care expenses can also be financed through a variety of solutions: one of which is Indexed Universal Life (IUL) with an accelerated death benefit rider designed for long-term care. …continues on page 62

financialfundamentals …continued from page 61 Unlike the “use-it-or-lose-it” downside of traditional LTC insurance, this is an option that offers full liquidity, leverage for long-term care, and a legacy benefit that can double the account value income tax-free at death. This has been an amazing tool for a proportion of our client base, some of whom had believed they would not qualify for any type of long-term care insurance. Undoubtedly the best time to address these issues is before there is a personal or economic reason to do so. While managing diet and exercise can go a long way to adding years to our lives, it is still important to note that 80 percent of those over age 85 need some form of care, with more than 1.5 million residing in nursing homes.
Long-term care should be discussed when reviewing your finances.

Scottsdale Airpark News (SAN): How is business going relative to last year? Elias: Business continues to be robust. We continue to grow. SAN: What kinds of plans for growth can you share that might give insight into some of the other things happening in your industry? Elias: The industry continues to become more complex as VC (venture capital) funding has reached more than $23 billion over the past five years for marketing driven software and Cloud application providers. SAN: Are you planning to do any hiring in the next six months? Elias: Yes, two to four additional employees. SAN: How do you find it best to recruit new team members in this age of technology? Elias: LinkedIn and word of mouth.

SAN: How optimistic are you about the economy getting better in the next year? Elias: Depends on the impact of the QE (quantitative easing) that has propped up the stock market. The world economy of the G8 is highly leveraged and the impact from another recession would be severe. It remains unknown how this will all play out. We will remain cautiously optimistic about the U.S. economy. SAN: What is one thing about your business you believe other businesspeople in the Airpark would be surprised to know? Elias: That Toltec Global Services accelerates growth directly. We can have a dramatic impact on business sales acceleration and growth.
SAN: What are some of the challenges faced by your industry and how is your company working to overcome them? Elias: Confusion is the major challenge in our industry. New tools, new methods and new applications…and that creates integration problems. Marketers are always looking for the next superweapon that propels their efforts above the mean. The challenge is that many of the we-do-everything applications really don’t. Marketers are presented with many options that they don’t entirely understand and the ramifications of making mistakes can be deadly to both careers and brand reputations. SAN: Who is a role model in business whom you look up to? Elias: Aaron Feuerstein of Malden Mills. He kept paying his workers after his factory burned down because he felt it was the right thing to do. He felt a responsibility to his employees as stakeholders in his business. He was on “60 Minutes” back in the 1990s talking about his decision. I never forgot him. He is a righteous man in my opinion, and he did what I would have done. SAN: How about a few words of wisdom? Elias: The older I get, the less I think I know…about everything. So I don’t assume things that I used to assume and I keep my mind open. It helps me forgive those who have wronged me in business and in life. SAN: What are your business goals over the next 12 months? Elias: Expand the Toltec Global Services reach in terms of service offerings as well as customer focus. We are going to be moving into non-profits and business to consumer (B2C) over the next two quarters.

Scottsdale Airpark News (SAN): How is business going relative to last year? Godbout: Our education business has increased significantly as funding loosens up. On the corporate side, we are seeing a lot of new construction. So things are improving overall. SAN: What kinds of plans for growth can you share that might give insight into some of the other things happening in your industry? Godbout: Nationally, our CCS partners have just recently opened offices in Texas and Atlanta. Lots of expansion there. Here in Arizona, we are seeing a lot more interest in digital content and cloudbased services that complement our core business of AV hardware integration. SAN: Are you planning to do any hiring in the next six months? Godbout: I don’t know that it will happen that soon, but we have potential plans for staff to support content creation and online services. We also may add some staff to support consolidated services—operations, system monitoring—for CCS national, running through our CCS Arizona office. SAN: How do you find it best to recruit new team members in this age of technology? Godbout: Although not very technical, word of mouth is still our best tool. We have, however, done outreach through university and community college online message boards to recent graduates, especially in recruiting sales staff. SAN: How optimistic are you about the economy getting better in the next year?
Godbout: I’d use the phrase “cautiously optimistic.” SAN: What is one thing about your business you believe other businesspeople in the Airpark would be surprised to know? Godbout: That one of the country’s largest audio visual integrators is right here in their neighborhood. SAN: What are some of the challenges faced by your industry and how is your company working to overcome them? Godbout: As products go from analog to digital, IT and AV are getting closer and closer together. Our AV staff now needs further training to gain a strong understanding of IT networks and wireless backbones. SAN: Who is a role model in business whom you look up to? Godbout: Andy Grove, the former CEO of Intel Corp. SAN: How about a few words of wisdom? Godbout: Grove had some great advice, “You must enhance your value every day, hone your competitive advantage, learn, adapt, move jobs and industries— retrench so you can advance, and learn new skills.” I tell my own staff to do everything he says, except the moving jobs part! SAN: What are your business goals over the next 12 months? Godbout: Consolidate services nationally and make all CCS partner offices stronger and more efficient.

Big Brands Doing Social Media Right and Tips for Your Social Media Strategy By Eric Olsen
S
ocial media is here to stay. It is the easiest way build your business and send out brand messages. Is your business experiencing the social media success you had hoped for? Are you curious what popular brands are actually doing to achieve social media success? Here are couple companies doing it right and some tips for developing your social strategy.
Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns have embraced social media and incorporated it into their fan experience. Almost every post includes an image or video with some form of engagement. Questions and calls to action are active components of their Facebook and Twitter accounts. Integration is key. The official Phoenix
Suns website includes feeds from Facebook and Twitter and actively promotes fans to follow and like them. “We use social media as a way to let fans know that we’re listening to them,” says Greg Esposito, Phoenix Suns social media manager. “Direct interaction, particularly on Twitter, is key. We also like to show fans a behind-the-scenes look. To do so, we’ve built out accounts with the personality of the biggest Suns fan you could meet and try to talk and interact like a person (and) not a corporation.” To see the Suns social media in action, check out www.facebook.com/suns and www.twitter.com/suns.
Ford Motor Company
Ford has brought the social experience to the forefront of their marketing efforts. Each
time they add a new Facebook or Twitter post, they pull in the image, the post’s headline and the comments from readers onto the front page of their website. Those new to the site or those browsing for a new car experience the company and its culture from a social viewpoint right from the start. To see Ford’s social media in action, check out www.facebook.com/ford and www.twitter.com/ford.

digitalmarketing 1. Audit social media activity—Analyze what works and what doesn’t by reviewing posts during the past three, six or 12 months. Determine which got the most traffic, shares, and overall engagement and adjust your new social media marketing strategy appropriately. Some tools that help: • Google Analytics • AgoraPulse Facebook page barometer • Tailwind’s Pinterest tools • Iconosquare Instagram statistics 2. Increase your reach—Setting yourself apart from the hordes of other brands on social networks is challenging, but necessary. Even if you have a strong following, there is no guarantee your messages are seen. The key is to post more content in more places more often. When combined with best practices (quality content + strategic approach to channels = fan base), this “shotgun” method of distributing content increases your likelihood of getting through. 3. Investigate the competition—Find what works for your competitors, and then use the information to enhance your social media marketing strategy. To gain
the most insight, look at their rankings, keyword prioritization, and search engine presence, and then analyze their traffic sources (direct, organic, or otherwise), review their content marketing, and look at how and where they are advertising. 4. Crowd pleasing—The right audience strategy will inspire your fans to engage and share your content. Know who they are, what they believe in, and what they have in common. Determine how to attract more followers by going beyond a basic content strategy to find the overlap between why you think your brand matters and why customers think your brand matters. 5. Improve mobile content—Mobile devices are being used more than ever to consume content, so be sure to include mobile analysis as part of your social digital marketing strategy. Mobile is much different from desktop and bears unique considerations: Header images are important. Make yours big and impactful. On Twitter, keep track of tweets and retweets, and focus on visual content. With Facebook, share images, links and
pin posts with updates. LinkedIn’s mobile content is more structured, and requires a strong bio and crisp content to grab people’s attention. Whether you are a seasoned social media veteran or just starting out, it is always good to brush up on what works in the industry and see what the big guys are doing. Thank you to the Phoenix Suns and Ford Motor Company for doing a great job and leading by example. I wish you all the best with your digital marketing success in 2015. MARCH Business Horoscopes By Weiss Kelly, PMAFA Whether you’re a small-business owner or have other career aspirations, insights into how the planets influence your work month can help you plan for maximum performance and project success.
ARIES 3/21-4/19 Your monthly work planner will come in handy, as the month ahead is fast paced. Planetary action from March 1 through March 30 will make up for early February’s slowdowns. Renew ties with professional associations by midmonth. Expect work-related challenges the first two weeks. Your finances can be balanced, in spite of extra expenses. The total eclipse on March 20 brings surprising information.
gies support your efforts. Unexpected opportunities will demand your attention and response. Circle the first two weeks. Arrange any meetings before the eclipse on March 20. Be alert in dealing with contracts, bills or important correspondences. Money matters are brought to light after midmonth. Any decisions or agreements made this month are for keeps, whether they are positive or negative.
SAGITTARIUS 11/22-12/21 March may prove to be one of your more productive cycles of the New Year. Your fastpaced month will get your adrenaline going. Finish projects early because toward month’s end you’ll be thrust into a responsible position or longterm commitment. Some may decide to go off and start their own business. You are in it for the long haul.
TAURUS 4/20-5/20 The month ahead could be challenging. Expect to spend private time finishing up a job. Full moon on March 5 means time to complete or drop a work plan. Agreements may not be settled, so move on. Financial matters should show a slight increase the week of March 16.
VIRGO 8/23-9/22 Work matters must be handled the first week of March, preferably around March 4. Emphasize your one-on-one relationships. This month’s eclipses force a reality check. Address matters in a more realistic and practical manner. Dress and act your best as an inner transformation starts March 17.
CAPRICORN 12/22-1/19 You like a challenge and your wish may come true this month. The theme is action and reaction. This year you break with tradition. Schedule travel between March 1 and March 14 for more favorable results. Business agreements can be combined with social activities, so take a client out to lunch or join coworkers for dinner. It will pay off in many ways.
GEMINI 5/21-6/21 Last month’s emphasis on the social scene continues to connect you with the right opportunities. You can encounter new resources. Expect to have some demands placed on your free time from March 16 through March 31. You can accomplish more by working alone. The March 20 eclipse requires you to address your intentions and stick to your goals. A bit of social relaxation can be beneficial.
LIBRA 9/23-10/23 March usually means someone else seems to be controlling you. Collaborations come easy to you. Seek the cooperation of others. Your sense of fair play and diplomatic style can be put into play. The new moon on March 20 is powerful and allows you to take a new approach. Expect your business to move in a more productive manner. Networking is required. Make appointments and arrange social meetings.
AQUARIUS 1/20-2/18 An evolving work/business situation has you moving rapidly ahead. Follow through with plans by March 20. Expect a flurry of communication to continue. You may have the chance to travel for work between March 1 and March 15. Keep a careful eye on receipts and bank balances. Conservatively spend when it comes to work matters.
CANCER 6/22-7/22 If you must make a presentation, have all your facts and figures together by March 4 (full moon). Any decisions can be finalized by the first week. Finances are highlighted around March 12—just in time to contact your accountant or tax professional. Work-related circumstances change rapidly this month, so be prepared.
SCORPIO 10/24-11/21 This can be a breakthrough month for you. After last month’s adjustments, you are ready to move forward. Expect a wave of changes in the second half of this month. It may remove any negatives. Take whatever isn’t working in your business and go in a new direction. Arrange interviews or presentations by midmonth. Work issues are the top priorities for the next couple of months.
LEO 7/23-8/22 March always seems to be one of your more productive and positive times. Planetary ener-

PISCES 2/19-3/20 You’ll see an eclipse in your own sign in mid-March. Your future will look brighter in the form of a new career or promotion. Take care of any pending projects during the first two weeks. Full moon on March 5 brings some matters to be finalized. Midmonth is more favorable for making plans. The month ends on a high note.

Run the Runway at Scottsdale Airport Set for April 4 Event benefits Playworks Arizona, a nonprofit that sends coaches to low-income schools
P
lanes will be grounded at Scottsdale Airport on Saturday, April 4 as children and adults take over the tarmac for the third annual Run the Runway event, featuring a 5K/10K, as well as a 1-mile Mascot Dash for kids. Last year, mascots from several Arizona sports teams participated, including the Phoenix Suns Gorilla, Howler of the Coyotes, Big Red from the Cardinals, Arizona State’s Sparky and Baxter from the Diamondbacks. Arizona, a nonprofit organization that sends trained, full-time coaches to lowincome, urban schools, where they transform recess and play into a positive experience that helps kids and teachers get the most out of every learning opportunity, including sports. Playworks staff and coaches work with children to address issues like bullying and aggression. Sara Ferrara, aviation planning and outreach coordinator for the Scottsdale Airport, said the airport and local airpark business community have enjoyed hosting such a unique event. “We are happy to offer young and old the opportunity to ‘play’ at the airport and benefit a wonderful cause.” Ferrara says. “It’s not often you get a chance to run or walk on an actual runway.” Post-race festivities include bounce inflatables, music, a DJ, vendors, interactive activities with kids and photo
opportunities with airplanes, mascots and awards. A participants’ 5K fee ($35 or $45) at Run the Runway helps fund one child for an entire school year. Chuck Warshaver, executive director of Playworks Arizona, is passionate about the program and believes it works. One Phoenix school went from a 16 percent absenteeism rate to 3 percent after implementing the program. AIM scores benefited dramatically too, going from C averages to just four points away from an A.
