as it just me...or did the month of March fly by like a Randy Johnson fastball? Yes, Spring Training
is over, the boys of summer are headed back to
their respective MLB cities and fans are savoring the hope and
optimism that are bountiful in April. I made it out to
one Spring Training game
in March...ONE! Things are certainly busy here at the Airpark News.
Yes, April is here, a time
when many Arizonans start planning their summer
vacations. San Diego is always
a popular destination, as are Anaheim and Puerto Peñasco (or “Rocky Point” to the regulars). Others are planning cruises,
which have become the hottest segment of the travel industry.
And it’s no surprise—cruise ships are becoming more and more spectacular—with amenities that rival or surpass many of the finest resorts in the country.
Personally, I’ve never been on a cruise, but friends and family
tell me “It’s the greatest thing ever.” Maybe this is the year I finally partake and see what I’ve been missing.
Speaking of cruises, gracing the April cover are John and
Marcia Rowley, the founders of International Cruise & Excursions in the Airpark. If you enjoy a good old-fashioned American

entrepreneurial success story, this is it. Two decades ago, the
Rowleys parlayed the burgeoning cruise and timeshare travel industries into a billion-dollar business. With a concept so
simple, yet so brilliant, many readers will smack themselves in
the forehead and say, “Why didn’t I think of that!” The two are dazzling business visionaries, yet a couple of the nicest people
I’ve ever had the opportunity to meet and interview. Gracious, friendly and accommodating—it’s refreshing to see when nice guys (and gals) finish first. Enjoy the issue!

Scottsdale resort embarks on major renovation
The Scottsdale Resort & Conference Center will embark on a major renovation on July 1 that will transform the independent resort and revitalize its amenities. The resort is the newest property in the Destination Hotels portfolio and the only resort in the Phoenix metropolitan area to undergo a substantial renovation in 2015. In September, the property will be unveiled as The Scottsdale Resort at
McCormick Ranch, A Destination Hotel, and it will have a refined, updated look to accompany its new name. The first phase of the renovation will inject $9 million into the property, introducing a new restaurant and bar, transforming the main pool, adding significant outdoor meeting and event space, and enhancing guest rooms, all while creating a more open, welcoming feel throughout the resort. The property is owned by Cornerstone Advisors, which also features Motif Seattle, A Destination Hotel, in its resort portfolio. Info: www.thescottsdaleresort.com
New TV game show holding auditions in the Valley
Have you ever watched “Family Feud” and thought, “I could answers those questions…easy!” Well here’s your chance to
prove it. Casting producers for a new network TV game show, tentatively titled “Who Knows Who,” will hold an open casting call at Dave & Buster’s in nearby Tempe Marketplace on Saturday, April 11, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Casting producers are conducting a nationwide search for teams of two to five individuals. Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to apply. “Who Knows Who” is described as a fun, family-friendly game show, combining elements of pop culture trivia and knowledge of facts, quirks and stories about contestant’s teammates. “Grab your closest friends, roommates, siblings, parents, co-workers, fiancé, even your spunky grandma, and come on down to Dave & Buster’s at Tempe Marketplace,” said casting producer Matthew Stravitz. “We are looking for big personalities who will capture the hearts and minds of the American TV audience.” Scottsdale should have plenty of those big personalities. Arizona BBQ Festival moved to May 2
SPRING CLEANING Q: It’s spring cleaning time and I’m not sure if I should throw all my household linens into my machine. Any suggestions? A: Washing household items at home can have disappointing results. Bedspreads & comforters are often too large for a home washing machine, and they might shrink. But Prestige Cleaners will maintain the shape of your bedding, tablecloths and other household linens. Comforters should be stored in a dark, dry area and in a clean container, not the plastic dry-cleaning bag.
The Arizona BBQ Festival, which is normally staged during April, has been moved to May 2 at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. Billed as “one of the best damn Honky Tonks in Arizona,” the sixth annual fest will include an expanded Redneck Games Arena, where patrons can get their trailer park on, partaking in silliness such as watermelon seed-spitting, bobbing for pig’s feet and toilet seat horseshoes. More tents and water misters will be implemented to handle the expected higher temperatures. Info: www.azbbqfestival.com
Cayenne Medical debuts two new products
Cayenne Medical, a privately held sports medicine device company specializing in the soft tissue reconstruction segment, launched two new products added to its comprehensive line of surgical solutions. The two products joining the Cayenne arsenal of intuitive devices are the Quattro Bolt Tenodesis Screw and the Short SureLock System, both of which were displayed during the 2015 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting in March. Both new products underscore the
mission of Cayenne to aid surgeons in navigating intricate joints with ease and confidence, resulting in positive outcomes. The Quattro Bolt Tenodesis Screw is a tenodesis solution that provides an allarthroscopic approach for reliable, efficient, tendon-in-socket fixation. It extends Cayenne’s shoulder solutions to provide a comprehensive upper extremity line along with extended indications. An expansion of Cayenne’s novel SureLock System product line, Short SureLock is a mini all-suture anchor for small bone indications. The Short SureLock System offers the same consistent insertercontrolled anchor deployment with a shorter drill depth for broader extremity indications. Info: www.cayennemedical.com
Culinary school welcomes its newest chef instructor
Arizona Culinary Institute announced its newest chef instructor, Ron Lawrence. The talented chef grew up in Kansas City, where he watched his father cook homestyle meals every Sunday on his one day off. Lawrence still loves simple food, prepared with a little pizzazz. His father’s recipes for pork chops and manicotti still resonate as favorites with Lawrence to this day. …continues on page 14

reasewood Flat, an Arizona icon, is riding off into the sunset. Their last day of operation was March 31. Local auction company, Sam Auctions, is inviting the public down to own a piece of the wild west on Saturday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Greasewood Flat—located at 27375 N. Alma School Parkway in Scottsdale—will sell many of the rustic treasures from one of the “oldest, quirkiest and most classic bars” in America. Greasewood Flat began life as an old bunkhouse building in the middle of the sprawling DC Ranch, which ranged over thousands of acres of
Sonoran Desert in the late 1800s. Over the last century, this desert area has developed into one of the most affluent areas of Scottsdale. Greasewood Flat grew into one of the last bastions of Old West Scottsdale, with its outdoor dance floor, corrals full of burros, rustic wagons and fire pits. Participants will have a chance to win money from the famed “money room,” which is rumored to have more than $5,000 in signed dollar bills hanging from the ceiling, by purchasing $1 raffle tickets—with proceeds to benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Cruise CONTROL
By turning travel points into cruises for the likes of Sears, American Express and leading resorts, behind-the-scenes booker International Cruise & Excursions may be the Airpark’s best kept billion-dollar secret. By Jimmy Magahern

t’s the eighth largest employer in Scottsdale and the largest in the Airpark area, with more than 1,350 employees, according to the latest government data. It’s No. 2 on the Phoenix Business Journal’s list of the top womenowned businesses for 2014 (down from No. 1 the year before), and one of the Valley’s biggest success stories overall, serving more than 55 million consumers worldwide and raking in more than $610 million in annual revenues. Yet few denizens of the Airpark district are even aware of International Cruise & Excursions, which occupies the sprawling white and blue building located almost catty-corner from the Scottsdale Quarter on the Greenway Hayden Loop. The most prominent signage on the building, former headquarters of Dial Corp., announces Sears Vacations, a program the company launched in 2012 in a lucrative partnership with the retail giant. A small sign by the street says only ICE, which passersby could be forgiven for mistaking for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, given the structure’s imposing size and general anonymity. “We never wanted to make ICE a brand,” explains CEO John Rowley, a
former Intel IT guy who co-founded the company in 1997 with his wife Marcia, the company’s chief marketing officer. “It’s primarily a B2B (business-to-business) brand for business partners. We run other big business partners’ travel programs and lifestyle programs. For instance, we do American Express cruises, and we have for 12 years, but you wouldn’t know it if you’re an American Express cardholder and you go online to American Express Travel and click ‘Book Cruises.’ It’s actually coming into this call center, but you wouldn’t know we’re tightly integrated into the brand.” Walk down the stairs from the Rowley’s second-floor offices and you’re taken aback by the sheer size of the call center floor, which extends almost a city block and is bustling at any given hour with at least 900 phone sales reps, each reading from welltooled sales scripts selling cruises for a wide variety of partners in what’s known as a “white-label” arrangement, allowing companies like Sears, Hilton, Marriott, Wyndam and others to offer cruise packages under their brand umbrella using ICE’s buying power and customer service infrastructure. “The reason this concept appeals to big companies is we don’t charge them money
to put them into the travel business,” says Rowley. “We fully funded the entry of Sears into the travel business, and it makes money for them, and we do revenue sharing. So it’s very compelling to an enterprise group that wants a transformational ingredient.”
Kitchen Table Start-Up
So how did ICE become the Scottsdale Airpark’s best kept billion-dollar secret? Stirringly, in 1997 the whole empire started with a simple idea that the Rowley’s couldn’t believe nobody else had already thought of. “My husband and I worked for and owned stock in a technology company that went public, and we were able to cash in our stocks from the IPO,” says Marcia Rowley, referring to Spatial Technology, a Boulder, Colo., software company. “John asked, ‘How are we going to celebrate this?’ and I said, ‘I’d like to go on a cruise,’” says Marcia. “And he said, ‘Well, we have that timeshare, let’s just trade that for a cruise.’ Well, back then, 20 years ago, you couldn’t trade a timeshare for a cruise. And John said, ‘Well, that seems like something that you should be able to do. If you’re buying into vacations for a lifetime, you should be able to go on

a variety of vacations, including cruises.’” Surprisingly, none of the major cruise companies had considered partnering with timeshare marketers. “Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess, Holland, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, they’re busy doing their business, which is making their product spectacular,” says Marcia. “The cruise business really relies on the travel agent network for sales and marketing. They have a network of travel agents that basically put people on their cruises.” Through a personal connection with a Carnival Cruise Lines employee, Marcia was able to set up a meeting with the president of the largest fleet in international cruise ship brands. “We explained how timeshare vacation owners are the perfect demographic for cruising,” she says. “And we said, ‘If we can introduce cruising into the vacation ownership industry, you will get a lot of people going on cruises that you’re not getting today.’” Her pitch worked. Carnival decided to take a chance on her idea, and very quickly the small side business she started in a corner of the MiniSoft offices on 16th Street and Northern grew to occupy nearly the entire business complex. “We never did operate out of our house, but it definitely started small,” Marcia says. “I mean, doesn’t every small business start in the kitchen, with a few ideas scrawled on napkins?” Soon the business moved into a four-story building near the I-17 and Dunlap Road and, when it outgrew that, relocated into the former Dial headquarters in the Airpark, where it’s thrived for the past four years. “We came up with a creative idea, an innovative concept of allowing people to trade their timeshare week for a cruise and pay just an all-inclusive fee to cover the meals, activities and entertainment,” she says. The business really exploded when the vacation ownership industry adopted a points system similar to the reward points programs offered by airlines and hotel chains. John Rowley applied his IT experience to develop a technology that would not only allow ICE to trade timeshare points for cruises, but also enable people to barter airline points and hotel loyalty points for cruises too. “Once we had the technology that would accommodate that type of a transaction, trading points for a cruise, it really opened us up to another whole market beyond timeshare,” Marcia says. They’re now even expanding beyond bartering for cruises to allowing customers to trade those loyalty points for lifestyle amenities. “Now we have things like wine, golf, spas, …continues on page 22

…continued from page 21 online shopping,” says John. “So now it’s also about what you do in your everyday life. And that was Marcia’s idea. She said, ‘People vacation as much as they can, but in the U.S. that’s usually just a couple of weeks a year. How can we be involved in their everyday life the rest of the year?’” While John credits Marcia as “the real brains” behind the company, she credits him for engineering the technology (now patented) that makes it all work. “Underneath all of this,” he admits, “that’s kind of the secret sauce.”
Keeping Employees Happy
John and Marcia Rowley built International Cruise & Excursions by creatively marketing cruises to timeshare owners.

Walk through the cavernous call center on ICE’s ground floor, and you’ll see an array of features and services you’re more likely to find in a major mall than a workplace. “This is our café,” says Shirley Beaver, executive assistant to John Rowley and one of ICE’s first employees (“I was employee number five!”), pointing out the onsite cafeteria with indoor and outdoor patios that offers workers a varied menu of quality meals at reduced prices subsidized by the company. “We have a nail salon, an on-site massage therapist, an eyelash girl, a fitness center with showers, a concierge desk where you can get your dry cleaning done, get discounted movie tickets, an aspirin or some gum — whatever you need, they have it available.” ICE even maintains an on-site wellness clinic staffed by a nurse practitioner, where anybody insured under the company’s plan can get free medical attention, and a “quiet room” where employees can lay down and take a break if they’re stressed or not feeling well. “We commit a lot of resources to
employee engagement and benefits,” says Marcia Rowley, “because we know that employees are our biggest asset and will make or break the company. So we’ve always invested in our employees.” Of course, there’s a practical reason for all the perks, too. The majority of ICE’s employees are call center operators, a field where turnover is notoriously high due to the constant pressure to meet demanding sales quotas. Even with all of ICE’s perks, the company is constantly hiring to fill vacated positions and averages a middling 3-outof-5 star rating on Glassdoor.com, a website where current and former employees anonymously review companies and their management. “This is a churn and burn,” writes one former ICE sales rep. “Most people are out as soon as they can get another job since the company terminates you when you don’t make quota.” Call center work in general can be a grueling gig, and Marcia Rowley admits it’s not for everyone. “We have standards that we require of our employees, and if we don’t meet them, then they won’t have continued employment,” she says. “But those people who are successful make a really good wage and have a really good environment and love their job.” John Rowley concurs. “We have a lot of long-time employees. Out of the first five employees that Marcia had, two are still with us, and they’ve done extraordinarily well.” Indeed, ICE has been recognized as one of the “Best Places to Work” for four years in a row by the Phoenix Business Journal and listed as one of the 40 “Most Admired Companies” for 2014 by AZ Business Magazine. …continues on page 24

Pro One Media Productions has been in business for 28 years, spending the last five years in the Scottsdale Airpark. “There’s so much energy here and there’s so much going on all the time. Plus it feels ‘small town’ here. I like the Airpark a lot,” says Pam Kelly, who coowns Pro One Media with her husband, John Kelly. When Pro One started, it was only doing conversions of reel-to-reel footage to VHS and then eventually VHS to DVD format. Realizing video was becoming accessible to the masses, Pro One started offering more video services. The company began doing weddings and has long since graduated to doing just about everything but weddings. “The videos we do are everything from video business cards to full-blown infomercial and we do everything in between,” says Kelly. “We’ll do 30-second commercials for television and instructional videos, and we’ve done a lot of video with Scottsdale Healthcare. We’re doing all kinds of business-to-business video services.” The company is also keen on keeping their clients informed on the latest video services so they can stay competitive. Vuria Creative Technology offers a green room studio for its clients use.
The owner of Solutions 8 loves being in the Airpark because of the special types of businesses that have taken up operations there. “There’s an interesting amalgamation of entrepreneurial spirit here,” says the owner of Solutions 8, Kasim Aslam, who founded his business in 2006 in the Airpark. “You have really cool, innovative approaches and people willing to say yes to new ideas and also you have that Midwestern work ethic where people say, ‘Hey, let’s stick this out and see if this works out long term.’ We have the perfect storm as far as the way businesses approach the enterprise in general.” “Everything is digital. I don’t do any traditional media,” Aslam explains. “We’re a digital marketing company and 50 percent of my business is building websites. The issue that people face, though, is once they have a website, if nobody sees it, does it even matter? We help people get their websites found and help them establish and maintain their digital presence.”

Home sales and construction markets could be best since 2007 By Rod Dennis
T
his year looks to be a good one for home sales and new home construction. Just how good? The best since 2007, say economists at Freddie Mac in their “Economic and Housing Outlook” released in February. The majority of homes are bought and sold between March and June, so we’ll have to wait a couple of months to tabulate the results. But all signs point to it being a productive season for housing. One of the key drivers remains—and no surprise here—affordability. In this case, the payment-to-income and priceto-rent ratios suggest that most markets have home values that are sustainable. Another crucial factor is interest rates,

and they continue to be low. In fact, rates plummeted last month after the Fed indicated any rate increase is likely to take place later than sooner. The average improvement was 0.10 percent, the biggest one-day drop we’ve had in 2015, according to Mortgage News Daily. On the jobs front, the national statistics were a bit sobering. Incomes have largely stagnated during the past 10 years, pointed out Freddie Mac. But the most recent jobs report showed that the economy added nearly 3.3 million, the fastest growth rate since 2000. Here in Scottsdale, it’s encouraging to note that WalletHub ranked us ninth overall among the 150 “Best and Worst Cities to
Find a Job” and 37th in terms of the local job market. All signs point to the demand for housing being led by millennials, the segment of the population ages 25 to 34. Their job prospects are on the rise, with the employment-to-population ratio for this group increasing to nearly 77 percent, according to Freddie Mac. With their bank accounts growing fatter, millennials are the likeliest candidates to get out of rentals and into property where they can build equity. That would be a wise decision. Rents have skyrocketed 11 percent in the past three years and are expected to increase at or above the inflation rate this year, said Freddie Mac.

“This may be the tipping point,’ said the Freddie Mac report. “Many current renters may decide to strike while the iron is hot—while mortgage rates are low and home prices not too high—and purchase a home this year.” Rod Dennis is the Branch Manager MLO 150049 of Pinnacle Capital Mortgage Corp. OUR 22nd ANNUAL Many people invest in their hobbies
because it’s fun and combines their interests with their financial goals. Investing in collectibles (or hobby investing as some refer to it) can be a bit tricky, however, because no two hobbies are exactly alike. Collecting also poses any number of risks and challenges. For starters, the market may be much harder to track, and considerations like storage and insurance can be an important factor. And, of course, there’s the question of what to buy.

“The more unique and the more specific something is, the more opportunity for an investment gain,” says Jack Ablin, the executive vice president and chief investment officer of BMO Private Bank in the Airpark. “Most of what people collect is a passion and they probably don’t expect to make a huge return.” In terms of specific areas of collectibles investing, certain things tend to do better than others. “I would say jewelry, certainly, and art…depending on the art…is pretty strong. Autos are mixed,” he states. Anything that is or once was available to the mass market tends to bring mixed results in terms of investing. For clients seeking advice on investing in collectibles, Ablin offers some food for thought. “I think it’s more of an individualized discussion but a lot of it depends on what their goals really are,” Ablin says. “Whether they’re looking to put a substantial amount of their worth into it, then we would have a more serious discussion about the implications. We do have some partners we work with that will actually create investment vehicles to surround a hobby.” For those doing hobby investing, it’s typically only one part of an individual’s overall financial picture. “Quite honestly, unless it’s something where they’re really serious and have a sizeable amount of money to put into it, I would say that for most hobby investments…the operative word is ‘hobby’ and not ‘investment,’” explains Ablin. “It should be fueled by passion and not necessarily expecting an investment return.” In his experience, he has encountered people who do hobby collecting of everything from baseball cards and glassware to horses and gun collections. Jinger Richardson and her husband Brad Richardson own the Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale. The gallery is also home to Scottsdale Art Auction, the largest art auction in the Southwest. “Paintings and sculptures can be put in your home and you can enjoy it,” says Jinger Richardson. “But you need to educate yourself on artists that are going to go up in value versus just decorator art that sits on the wall. There are many artists out there that slowly go up in value in time over 20 or 30 years, but then there are some hot artists that …continues on page 38

The upcoming Scottsdale Art Auction (www.scottsdaleartauction.com) takes place April 11 with a preview at the Legacy Gallery 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 10. The auction is open to the public and the purchase of a $50 catalog is required to attend. “Art collectibles make excellent investments,” says Micha Lang from Mana Fine Arts, a leading art storing, transporting and handling service company in Jersey City, New Jersey. “The best advice I can give you on getting

Results from the 2015 Russo and Steele auto auction in Scottsdale demonstrate just how brisk the market for vintage cars can be. A 1957 MercedesBenz 300 SL Roadster sold for $1.43 million, a 1969 Camaro ZL1 sold for $335,500 and a 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 brought in $330,000. Collectibles encompass a rather large universe, from Pez dispensers to vintage comic books to rare coins and stamps. Many “collectibles” are fine
souvenirs and enjoyable pastimes, but the universe for investment collectibles is much smaller. Supply and demand impact price appreciation, along with liquidity and activity of the marketplace for those items. With any financial decision of a sizeable magnitude, do your homework and ask your financial planner and tax consultant. With collectibles, knowledge is money.

His customers typically spend between $50,000 and $1 million on a vehicle. “We’re not zeroed in on one particular element or piece of the hobby,” he says. “We specialize in European sports cars, American muscle cars, hot rods and customs. That encompasses a huge piece of the hobby itself.” “We are the enthusiast experts,” Roberge says. “We’re involved in every level of the hobby and as a result, we have a very broad base of knowledge to draw from. A majority of our clients are repeat clients. INVESTING IN COLLECTIBLES IS A POPULAR FINANCIAL STRATEGY BMO Private Bank conducted a study on high-net worth Arizonans (those with at least $1 million in investable assets) and hobby (or passion) investing in 2014 and it found that half of the state’s wealthy engage in some form of hobby investing. This compares to the national average of 68 percent.
Hobby investing is defined as adding collectible assets to one’s portfolio as a means of diversification and, just as important, as a way to have and to hold the things investors love the most. The study found that the items in which Arizona’s affluent are most passionate about investing include: • Art (25 percent) • Jewelry and coins (23 percent each)
“People who choose to invest in their hobbies often do so because it allows them to feel a sense of engagement without having to spend a lot of time on them,” says Jack Ablin, the chief investment officer for BMO Private Bank in Scottsdale. “Many hobby investors are keen to create a legacy to pass on to their heirs—one that is unique to them and reflects their interests.”
WHY DO PEOPLE ENGAGE IN HOBBY INVESTING? According to the study, one of the main reasons why Arizona’s affluent engage in hobby investing is simply

because it is “fun” (65 percent). Other reasons identified include: • Combines interests with investing (50 percent) • Allows for showing off investments to others (20 percent) • Provides something unique to pass down to heirs (15 percent) • Provides sound investments that will grow in value (15 percent) Regardless of what influences people to combine their hobbies with investing, Ablin notes that, as with any form of investing, there are a few cautionary factors Arizonans of all income levels need to consider. For example: • Antiques can be very illiquid and therefore not suitable for those who may need to convert them to cash in a short period of time.
• Wine and art collecting are longterm propositions, so not appropriate for those with a short-term investing horizon. • Stamps and coins: there is a robust counterfeit market in both these items, so investors need to be careful about their authenticity and well-educated about the risks. • Comic book collecting may be trendy today, but the market may not be so strong in the long or even the medium term.
KEY NATIONAL FINDINGS On a national level, the study found: • Two-thirds (68 percent) of high net-worth Americans have a
hobby investment. • The most common hobby investments are coins (38 percent), art (36 percent), and jewelry (31 percent). • High net-worth Americans are most likely to engage in hobby investments because they find it “fun” (62 percent), because it is a way to combine an interest of theirs with investing (54 percent) and because it enables them to pass something special down to their loved ones (40 percent). • Four-in-10 (40 percent) say they invest in their hobbies because it is a sound investment that will appreciate in value, with this being a larger motivator for men than women (41 percent vs. 36 percent).

oday, Scottsdale’s Cure Corridor brings patients, providers and potential cures together in Scottsdale. With world-renowned healthcare companies like Mayo Clinic and Scottsdale Lincoln Health Network located in Scottsdale, as well as the myriad of health and wellness centers, spas, clinics and care facilities, Scottsdale is a mecca for curing or treating what ails us. Scottsdale Lincoln Health Network is Scottsdale’s largest employer, and medical tourism is a growing trend—both of which positively impact Scottsdale’s economy and quality of life. Long before we had wonder drugs and miraculously effective medical technology, people came to Scottsdale for the curative features of our warm, dry climate. Tuberculosis (TB), polio and cancer are just some of the major diseases that have impacted Scottsdale residents and visitors over the decades, some have been nearly cured; others have treatments and cures that are in active research.
42 | Scottsdale Airpark News April 2015
Consider these small doses of Scottsdale illness and treatment history: Commander of the Army of the Pacific Maj. Gen. Irvin McDowell, during an 1866 visit to his namesake Fort McDowell, was appalled to find soldiers suffering from scurvy. Soldiers at this remote outpost were not only fighting and patrolling in the area of the Salt and Verde rivers, but they were spending time trying to grow food for themselves and their horses. Gen. McDowell immediately attended to the malnutrition among his troops by hiring civilian contractors to create a hay camp nearby. That hay camp became the settlement of Phoenix, and, as settlement of the area continued, led to the homesteading of Scottsdale. During the first decades after Scottsdale’s settlement in 1888, residents turned to their neighbors on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community for advice in treating ailments ranging from lung problems to arthritis. Native Americans had found curative desert plants that alleviated symptoms and provided some comfort. As an example, Patricia Myers wrote in her book
“Scottsdale: Jewel in the Desert,” about former Kansas City resident Minnie Elliott’s miracle cure after she and her husband, theRev. Judson Elliott, moved to Scottsdale in the 1890s. “Mrs. Elliott, a victim of tuberculosis, had been told she had six months to live and had decided to make her last weeks count. So she went to the reservation to teach the Indians hygiene and nutrition. The Indians, in return, worked to restore her health. They had her lie in warm sand under mesquite trees and gave her herb teas. Within six months her lungs had cleared, and she lived to be 82 years old.” Many early Scottsdale settlers were sent here by their doctors in the Midwest or East Coast to ease the traumas of asthma, tuberculosis—often called consumption—and other lung problems that were aggravated by breathing cold, moist, polluted air. Founder/namesake Winfield Scott envisioned Scottsdale as an ideal location for a TB sanatorium, which never came to pass. Health camps sprouted up throughout the Salt River Valley, including the Graves Guest Ranch, a haven for

rest and recuperation on the northwest corner of Scottsdale and Indian School roads, which opened circa 1910. There were no doctors or nurses on the staff; however, guests benefited from light activities such as croquet and horseback rides in the desert and from healthy meals using Scottsdale-grown produce, especially citrus fruit and vegetables. Its brochure said, in part, “The climate is ideal and the road to health is assured if under spiritual surroundings, proper food and care are given.” A full-fledged TB sanatorium south of Scottsdale on Curry Road was also available for treatment, but, sadly, not for cures. wide problem, with an estimated 30 percent of the world’s population infected with the disease. Thankfully, effective treatments are available. After World War I, additional “lungers” were advised to come to the warm, dry Phoenix/Scottsdale area since many soldiers had been exposed to poison gas in the trenches in Europe and had chronic breathing problems. The Great Spanish Flu Epidemic swept the nation and Arizona in 191819. According to Scottsdale resident and Arizona’s Official Historian Marshall Trimble in his book “Diamond in the Rough”: “During the height of the epidemic, social gatherings and sporting events were prohibited and even pool halls were closed to prevent folks from gathering unnecessarily…citizens in Tucson and Phoenix were required to

During the town’s first few decades, Scottsdale residents relied on home cures or trips into Phoenix for medical care until the farm town got its first pharmacy in the 1920s and its first resident doctor in the 1930s. The commute for medical care was finally shortened when the City Hospital of Scottsdale opened on Osborn Road just east of Scottsdale Road in May 1962 (it is now Scottsdale Lincoln Health Network’s Osborn campus). Although polio—also known as infantile paralysis—had been a dreaded and incurable disease for many years, it reached epidemic proportions in the late 1940s and 1950s. As Scottsdale transitioned from an isolated farming community to a popular tourist destination and growing business center after World War II, residents united in their efforts to combat polio. One of the leaders of the Scottsdale area Cure Polio movement was Elliott Roosevelt, son of the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was perhaps the most famous victim of polio. Elliott enlisted local businessmen to have a Fathers’ March that paralleled the Mothers’ March of Dimes to raise money for polio research. The Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce, soon after organizing in 1947, raised money to buy an iron lung—the common treatment for polio cases that affected the respiratory system. Dr. Jonas Salk discovered the first anti-polio vaccine.

PTA, urging them to get their children inoculated with the first doses of the polio vaccine newly developed by Dr. Jonas Salk. Sixty years ago this month, as Scottsdale children queued up at the town’s two grammar schools for shots, the Salk vaccine was considered one of the most significant advances in preventative medicine. The vaccine helped to alleviate fears of children and adults that polio might affect them, or put them in an iron lung for the rest of their lives. Just weeks before the City Hospital of Scottsdale opened in May 1962, Dr. Albert Sabin personally visited Scottsdale to dispense his new and improved polio vaccine. Members of the City Hospital of Scottsdale Auxiliary assisted Sabin in dispensing the oral vaccine in sugar cubes at clinics held at Arcadia High School and other local facilities. While in town, Sabin and his family stayed at the Mountain Shadows resort in Paradise Valley. Thanks to the Salk and Sabin polio vaccines, the disease has been conquered in the United States. Rotary International and its Scottsdale chapters have continued to work to eradicate polio throughout the world. For “Zonies” interested in the legacy of Dr. Jonas Salk, during a future trip to San Diego, they can visit the Salk Institute of Biological Studies at its scenic coastal location in La Jolla. For information on public tours of the Louis I. Kahndesigned facility, visit www.salk.edu. Scottsdale medical facilities have been at the leading edge of cures and diagnostics since the 1960s. Then-Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-Osborn was the first in the United States to have a free-standing outpatient surgery center, and the first in Arizona to use a two-second CT scanner with full body capability, install an MRI for diagnostics and use the DaVinci robot-assisted surgical system. The Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center was dedicated in December 2001 on the Shea campus of Scottsdale Healthcare. Affiliations with International Genomics Consortium, T-Gen and other cancer research centers brought a new level of treatment and hope to cancer patients throughout the Scottsdale area and those traveling here for treatment or to participate in clinical trials. The Scottsdale Clinical Research Institute at the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center premiered in 2005, further elevating breakthrough studies being conducted in Scottsdale.
The famed Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minnesota, opened a Scottsdale campus in 1987. During its 28 years in Scottsdale, Mayo has evolved into an integrated, multi-campus system that include the Mayo Clinic, Samuel C. Johnson Research Building and the Mayo Clinic Collaborative Research Building on Shea Boulevard in Scottsdale and the Mayo Hospital campus on the ScottsdalePhoenix border. Mayo also operates an outpatient clinic on Thunderbird Road in Scottsdale. Among its many specialties is transplantation. Mayo performed the first liver transplant in the Phoenix area in 1999 and the area’s first laparoscopic living donor kidney transplant. Mayo has been a pioneer in bone marrow transplants. Mayo will also introduce proton beam therapy to the area for cancer treatment when a new facility opens on the hospital campus in 2016. Ailments such as Valley fever, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, cancers of all types and other life-altering conditions are subjects of study at Scottsdale Healthcare,

hey say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and that’s perhaps never truer than in the restaurant business, where new establishments are notorious for riding the culinary coattails of others. So it’s no surprise that a new generation of restaurants have shamelessly mimicked the successful fast-casual model of Chipotle, the phenomenally successful Mexican grill that has shaken up the restaurant industry. The latest to walk that path is Fired Pie, a Phoenix-based pizza chain that now has eight Valley locations, including a Scottsdale restaurant at the northwest corner of Northsight Boulevard and Raintree Drive. Like Chipotle, Fired Pie uses an assembly-line system where customers order from a simple, pared-down menu—either a personal pizza or a fresh salad—then choose their favorite toppings, watch the kitchen staff prepare the dish using fresh ingredients, pay the cashier and wait for their meal, which normally arrives within minutes. Like Chipotle, Fired Pie is furnished with modern décor, providing a hip, casual dining experience. In keeping with its simple theme, Fired Pie offers only one size pizza, an 11-inch version priced at $7.95, regardless of the toppings. It’s the perfect size for one person with a hearty appetite or two people who can split a pie and a salad. The pizza can be ordered their way or your way. For first timers, I’d recommend ordering one of their signature pizzas: Tomato Basil, Pesto Chicken, Hawaiian BBQ, Veggie, Steak & Blue (with gorgonzola cheese), Meaty Italian and just plain Sauce & Cheese (only $6). The Meaty Italian features mozzarella, pepperoni, salami, capicola and sausage. The meats balance well with the sauce and cheese. The thin crust is crispy and slightly chewy, not dry, and complements the toppings nicely. The Hawaiian BBQ—barbecue sauce, mozzarella, Canadian bacon, pineapple and cilantro—is a nice variation on the

Hawaiian pizza, with the barbecue sauce and cilantro giving it a subtle Southwestern kick. Designing your own pie is a snap and actually fun: select the sauce (tomato, alfredo, barbecue, pesto, buffalo and garlic & oil), then the cheese (mozzarella, parmesan, feta, gorgonzola, fontina and fresh mozzarella), onto the meats (pepperoni, grilled chicken, barbecue chicken, meatball, steak, salami, Canadian bacon, bacon, capicola, sausage, spicy sausage and anchovies) and finally veggies (onion, garlic, spinach, roasted peppers, mushroom, jalapeño, olive, pepperoncini, pineapple, artichoke, fresh tomato and sun-dried tomatoes) and herbs (basil, cilantro and oregano). Fired Pie’s gas-fired stone hearth oven cooks a pizza in 3 minutes, so by the time you grab a fountain drink, straws and napkins and settle into your seat, the pie is ready. A gluten-free crust is also offered for an additional $2. Fired Pie has five signature salads priced at $7.95: Buffalo Chicken Caesar, Field Greens & Roasted Veggies, Fired Italian, Steak & Blue and Spicy Southwest—or a Naked Caesar for only $6. With 30-plus fresh ingredients, salads can be customized exactly the way you like them. The Fired Italian features a bed of mixed greens topped with salami, capicola, pepperoni, pepperoncini, tomatoes and mozzarella drizzled with Italian dressing. The vegetables are cold, fresh and crisp, and the meats add a salty, zesty flavor. Vegans may want to choose the Field Greens & Roasted Veggies or build their own. For dessert, the Fired Pookie—a fresh chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice-cream—is deliciously decadent and satisfies any sweet tooth. In a nutshell, Fired Pie focuses on food quality, freshness, efficiency and transparency. It’s Chipotle for pizza… and it works.

The pros and cons of using video on your website By Eric Olsen

ith an increase in businesses using video on websites, the combination of that, social media and interactive marketing can be an incredible asset for any company. It adds personality to websites and organization and, as they say, “Puts a face to a names.” Videos can also position executives and their employees as thought leaders in the industry or marketplace, increase awareness of their product or service, and promote their brand. However, misusing video can have the reverse effect.
PROS Personality—People buy from people. Getting to see the personality of an organization or its employees prior to buying can make a huge impression on website visitors. Videos are often an ideal marketing tool for professional sources such as doctors, dentists, attorneys, accountants and others. A great example is the Law Offices of Mark Bregman (www.markbregmanlaw.com/media). Here you can see Bregman provide insights into his practice and his approach to estate planning and other legal services. Boost SEO—Video allows for stronger search engine optimization. How companies title and describe their videos allow the search engines to rank and index information correctly. Videos can be indexed and steer the correct audience toward your website. This can also generate more traffic to your website, especially if a YouTube channel is integrated to showcase videos. In essence, you leverage the power of YouTube, a Google-owned entity, by uploading your videos to one of the world’s most popular websites and drive traffic back to your website. Consumer Friendly—Video is easier than text; consumers don’t want to read anymore because it is less convenient.

Attention spans seem to be steadily decreasing. The increase of mobile and tablet usage through WiFi connections has put a drain on download speeds, thus furthering the perception of slow websites and load time. Having this plan of service expansion allows us to be a sought-after place of employment. It’s our belief that when lawyers relocate to a new firm, they should be able to continue their work, but also have the opportunity and means to grow it into something bigger. Giving lawyers this chance to be more successful through
improved resources allows them to expand their platform and provide more benefits to their clients than before. This allows for long-term career success, as well as success for clients. In addition, Quarles & Brady seeks to recruit not just talented, successful lawyers, but also lawyers that fit into the work culture and environment within the firm’s offices. This is a key to growth success because it leads to long-term retention. SAN: Are you planning to do any hiring in the next 6 months? Stanton: Absolutely. SAN: How do you find it best to recruit new team members in this age of technology? Stanton: While the age of technology has changed recruitment techniques, Quarles & Brady still finds word-of-mouth and personal relationships to serve as the best pipelines to talent. Pair that with being a law firm in which lawyers can grow their practice and intellectually have a challenging career with congenial and collaborative colleagues, and it creates an outline for successful recruitment. In the recruitment process, one of the other things that Quarles & Brady does to distinguish itself from other law firms is putting focus on Quarles & Brady University (QBU), which is a comprehensive orientation program we offer to new associates. This training includes presentations and networking with experienced lawyers, as well as other new attorneys. Newcomers get a sense of strategies that work, how to work effectively with their secretaries, learn to record their time properly and promptly, and learn about firm benefits such as the flexible benefits plan and 401(k). They also gain insight into such issues as firm values, client expectations, ethics, and conflicts of interest, as well as the evaluation process. In addition, associates also attend a writing seminar presented by outstanding experts. In the evening, they have the opportunity to get to know their peers and a variety of partners from each of the firm’s offices in social settings. At QBU Mid-Level, the chair of the Executive Committee gives a presentation about the business of managing a law firm. QBU Mid-Level teaches building client relationships, improving client service and communication, marketing oneself and one’s practice, supervision skills, and
preparing for partnership. The firm goes to great lengths to put systems in place to achieve a well-balanced and full life. Quarles & Brady firmly believes that happy lawyers are better lawyers. Because attorneys set their own schedules and manage their own workloads (within the parameters of client demands), attorneys have the control they need to balance the competing demands of work and their personal lives. The firm has some concrete tools designed to achieve this result, such as generous maternity, paternity and family leave policies, a flexible work schedule policy, web-based network access and Income Partner status. SAN: What is one thing about your business you believe other businesspeople in the Airpark would be surprised to know? Stanton: In 2014, Law360 named Quarles & Brady to its inaugural class of “Ceiling Smashers,” the 25 U.S.-based law firms, out of nearly 400 surveyed, that have the highest percentage of female partners. The firm was also noted as being one of seven “big law firms” with a female chair. Fun fact: Quarles & Brady is the only AmLaw 200 firm that has been led by an African American, John W. Daniels Jr., followed by a woman, current firm chair Kimberly Leach Johnson. Here in Scottsdale, Quarles & Brady intends to be an active member of the Scottsdale community, as it has been in Phoenix, Tucson, and its seven other locations across the country. The firm has a long history of enthusiastic social responsibility, embraced by civic-minded lawyers and staff members alike. The firm is committed to supporting and sustaining its local communities through its Quarles Cares program and pro bono services, reflecting an ongoing devotion to making communities the firm calls “home” better places to live. Matt Dana is himself a longtime, ardent supporter of Arizona State University and has been active in several of its programs and initiatives through the years. We boast some of Arizona’s great civic, economic development and charity leaders. SAN: What are some of the challenges faced by your industry and how is your company working to overcome them? Stanton: Quarles & Brady strives for excellence in all it does: in quality of legal work, service to clients, strength and April 2015 Scottsdale Airpark News | 63

diversity of attorneys and staff, superior work environment and involvement in each of the communities it calls home. An ongoing challenge that is critical to our business is the continuous development of the talent on our teams. Professional development is important to the firm because law is very much a “people” business and what makes Quarles & Brady special is the exceptional nature of its people. Investing in growth and development makes the firm a better service provider. SAN: Who is a role model in business whom you look up to? Stanton: In business, I look up to Jay Parry, CEO of the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee. By all accounts, she pulled off a huge success in terms of how the Super Bowl reflected on Arizona. Her leadership style is attributed to that success. Seeing how she made good decisions that were sometimes difficult in intense international scrutiny is inspiring. She empowers people, which, to me, is what leadership is all about. That’s why the event was successful—because the people who were working with her on the Super Bowl would have done anything for her. Everyone put the event in front of their own self-interests. In addition to empowering her team, she also put the community together both locally and nationally on a shoestring budget in a short period. It was her goal to prove that Arizona could successfully put on a world-class event, and she really exceeded that goal. SAN: How about a few words of wisdom? Stanton: There are going to be days when work or life deals you a bad hand. But it is just that—one bad hand. Roll up your sleeves and work toward a better one. Never be afraid of hard work. One of the things I have always said in terms of managing a law firm or leading a group of people is you can’t let the highs get you too high and lows get you too low. Right now, we’re having great success with our Scottsdale office in getting new partners, but next week we could have people tell us they’re leaving to go inhouse or to another law firm. We’re in this community for the long-term. We’re not looking for quick attention-grabbing success; we’re looking to be partners with our clients. Point is—you have to go steady.
Scottsdale Airpark News (SAN): How is business going relative to last year? Brown: The past 12 months have been a whirlwind in the best possible way for us. In March 2014, I was proud to accept the position of Washington Federal’s firstever Arizona Regional President. At the same time, we entered into an agreement with Bank of America to acquire 13 of their branches statewide. So, in the past year, we’ve grown to 35 branches statewide. Right now, our portfolio is approximately 60 percent consumer and mortgages. However, our commercial side of the business has been growing exponentially—at a faster clip than any other business line. We see it continuing to do so and are putting plans in place to facilitate that growth at the branch and executive level. SAN: What kinds of plans for growth can you share that might give insight into some of the other things happening in your industry? Brown: Because our commercial/business line is growing at the rate it is, bringing in the right executive leadership—and continuing to do so in 2015—has been key. Among our proudest moves has been bringing in the Airpark’s own Ben Danner, a 25-year veteran, in recent months to head up what we are calling our business banking initiative. Danner’s work in this market to provide

MIKE BROWN Arizona Regional President of Washington Federal Bank • Year your company was founded: 1917 • Years in the Scottsdale Airpark: 15 • Number of employees: 40 in our North Scottsdale offices; 250 statewide • Industry: Banking • Annual revenue: More than $10 million
a complete line of customized business and consumer banking services for small and medium business owners, professionals, nonprofit organizations and individuals preceded him when the opportunity first came to bring him onboard. With him leading our team, we are boldly partnering with and bringing on businesses in Arizona from $2 million to $200 million, ranging from mom-and-pop shops to companies with full management teams at the C-suite level. And, thanks to our recent branch growth, we’ve been able to think outside of just Maricopa County. We see a majority of our growth in the coming months in areas like Tucson, Payson, Prescott Valley and even Show Low—areas where having a face-to-face meeting means a lot. Understanding and respecting that, we want to show businesses statewide that we care about more than just Phoenix; we want to help them in whatever city they work, live and play in too. SAN: Are you planning to do any hiring in the next 6 months? Brown: Absolutely—we’ve actually already gotten started on it. SAN: How do you find it best to recruit new team members in this age of technology? Brown: For us, investing in technology is critical for our customers. In fact, we are in the process of a complete IT system
overhaul—slated to be completed in late 2015—that will allow us to serve customers in whatever way they need. This could be from the comfort of their homes or businesses, at a branch using a smart ATM or working with us face-toface at a local branch. We think the enhancements will suit the needs of the millennial generation as they move into leadership roles in the business community. And by continuing to also offer the brick and mortar experience at our branches, we will fit the needs of those who still want that one-on-one relationship with their banking team. Conversely, when looking for talent, it is more about the role technology doesn’t play. Finding good people comes from building good relationships: with people, in person, through experiences, over years. SAN: How optimistic are you about the economy getting better in the next year? Brown: In Arizona, while I am optimist, I would be downright giddy if we could get local job growth to grow at a higher tick. While we aren’t paddling water, we are at a slow crawl compared to where we should and could be. SAN: What is one thing about your business you believe other businesspeople in the Airpark would be surprised to know? Brown: Washington Federal is a portfolio lender on every loan that we do, including mortgages. The vast majority of banks—I am talking north of 95 percent of them—sell their mortgages to Fanny Mae or Freddy Mac. This means our customers are with us 30 years. It’s just our culture—we want to be there to help them when they need something, and to take care of things in-house. SAN: What are some of the challenges faced by your industry and how is your company working to overcome them? Brown: It’s no secret that compliance and regulatory changes are a hurdle all banks have been working to overcome. It is a paradigm shift we’ve all been thrown into – one that results in an exorbitant amount of increased costs on our end. Like everyone else in our boat, we are tackling it head-on and in as transparent a way as we possibly can. In addition to that, there was just a story in the local paper touting “the end

We are working through this by looking at creating micro-branches and even partnering with other businesses to co-branch our branch buildings. For example, we have a sister branch in Seattle that shares its real estate with a coffee house, and people love it! We are looking at how to do all of this in Arizona to ensure our branches are as accessible as possible no matter where you work and live. SAN: Who is a role model in business whom you look up to? Brown: Warren Buffett—and for more than just his Midas touch. Article after article on Buffett talks about his Midwestern attitude and work ethic as well as the importance he places on having real relationships with team members and business partners that span decades. That is something to certainly aspire to. SAN: How about a few words of wisdom? Brown: The harder you work, the “luckier” you get. SAN: What are your business goals over the next 12 months? Brown: We want to put Washington Federal on the map in Scottsdale, Phoenix and beyond as we move toward our company’s big 100-year anniversary in 2017. We’ve been here, and we will continue to be here.

Scottsdale Airpark News (SAN): How is business going relative to last year? Reichenberger: Business has been great to start off 2015. Purchase transactions are steady and seem to have increased with most of our offices, and of course we hit another small refinance boom this first quarter, which helped things. I actually just came across a story that reported home sales across the Valley are on track to jump more than 30 percent over the next several months, potentially signaling the restart of our stalled housing recovery. ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business seems to agree, noting that the positive increase appears to signal that more first-time buyers and former homeowners who lost houses to foreclosure are purchasing again. SAN: What kinds of plans for growth can you share that might give insight into some of the other things happening in your industry? Reichenberger: Our growth has been really steady in recent years, as we began the housing recovery. In the greater Scottsdale market, we’ve actually grown so much that we recently opened a second area office—this one in Paradise Valley—to accommodate all of the work. Our Phoenix office had similar positive growth as well. They actually expanded their branch into two offices in two floors to handle all of the workflow. SAN: Are you planning to do any hiring in the next 6 months?

Reichenberger: With 55 branches statewide, we are always hiring. Interested? SAN: How optimistic are you about the economy getting better in the next year? Reichenberger: I am cautiously optimistic for many reasons. The less restricting lending standards and the federally mandated cut to Federal Housing Administration mortgage insurance may be attracting new buyers, too—and if it continues, then I am definitely optimistic. It also appears that Millennials are starting to get into the market. All signals point toward them hopping off the fence and stepping into their own houses. SAN: How do you find it best to recruit new team members in this age of technology? Reichenberger: Technology is a great tool in the recruiting process by allowing us to post opportunities to websites such as Monster.com, Jobing.com, Craigslist, etc.; it has helped us a lot. I do believe that when it comes to recruiting a solid potential team member, nothing beats the personal touch of reaching out with a call to set up a face-to-face meeting. SAN: What is one thing about your business you believe other businesspeople in the Airpark would be surprised to know? Reichenberger: For our 30th anniversary, rather than hosting a party in the grand ballroom of a prestigious resort, we

SAN: What are some of the challenges faced by your industry and how is your company working to overcome them? Reichenberger: In our industry, we often suffer when people don’t understand what we do and why they need us. The land title transfer system in America works so well that most consumers never take the opportunity to learn how or why it works or to understand the personal and societal benefits derived from this highly effective system of assurance. However, when an individual sits at a closing table to sell one house and buy another, the main reason such a complex real estate transfer can be quickly accomplished is because an independent, third party title/settlement professional has already searched the public record (property records, tax records and court records) to establish legal ownership of the property being sold, cured any title or public record defects (one-third of all transactions reveal a title or public record defect), accounted for and transferred all of the money intended to change hands and insured the entire transaction against any mistake, fraud, risk or defect, whether it is known or unknown. As a practical matter, this means that buyers are more willing to purchase property because they are insured against property fraud and defects in the public record. Lenders are more willing to make loans because the borrower’s ownership
of the collateral, or real estate, is guaranteed through title insurance. The secondary financial markets are willing to buy mortgage-backed securities because, in the event of a default, their right to the underlying collateral is assured. Title companies and their agents are involved in completing all aspects of the closing process, from preparation of documents and recording instruments, to preparation of closing forms and collecting and disbursing funds. Before a transaction is completed, a title search of the records is made in an effort to locate potential problems so that they can be corrected and the transfer can proceed. While most problems can be located in a title search by skilled professionals, there can be hidden hazards that even the most thorough search will not reveal.

APRIL Business Horoscopes By Weiss Kelly, PMAFA Whether you’re a small-business owner or have other career aspirations, insights into how the planets influence your work month can help you plan for maximum performance and project success.
ARIES 3/21-4/19 April may not be your favorite time of the year—especially when unexpected professional expenses arise. Taxes are due on April 15, but there’s a positive twist: You are able to earn more. Be aware of your presentation when communicating with others. TAURUS 4/20-5/20 Work independently the first two weeks of the month. Communication and information are key the second half of the month. Sun in your sign by April 20 is favorable for setting plans into place. GEMINI 5/21-6/21 Do not avoid any health or financial issues; just tackle them. This is a good time for new beginnings. Circle April 20 as your pleasant rapport garners approvals. CANCER 6/22-7/22 A financial matter may appear, so it works out well that you always put aside funds or savings. Underline April 14 to April 16. It is then that you will let go of contacts that have been holding you back. Take the steps that are needed for more financial security. LEO 7/23-8/22 You have quite an interesting month ahead, as your work-career path may change. Saturn’s position for the next two years will help you expand your knowledge or enter a new field. Don’t over-
look any offers. Be prepared for an increase in work responsibilities. VIRGO 8/23-9/22 This is your month to implement a plan and make the changes that you wish for. The power from the April 4 total eclipse will be in effect for six months. Put an emphasis on your significant relationships— whether they are personal and/or work related. In terms of work, the month will be busy. Mixing business with pleasure can be highly productive, and not a waste of time. Arrange business meetings after April 20.
SAGITTARIUS 11/22-12/21 The 9-to-5 routine may not be popular with you, but you’ll have to deal with restrictions early this month. Business relationships run smoother when Venus makes a positive move by April 13. CAPRICORN 12/22-1/19 The later half of April is progressive and financially successful. Do not give up the secret of your determination. Expect April to be financially successful once Mercury enters Taurus on April 15 and later joined by the Sun.
LIBRA 9/23-10/23 The April 4 total eclipse puts the spotlight on you in the months ahead. Collaborations are highlighted. Agreements or disagreements can be finalized by the first week. A positive turn of events puts a crimp in your social life. “Dress for success” is the theme this month. That tax refund comes just in time.
AQUARIUS 1/20-2/18 “Money” is a subjective term. The first half of this month, you will think abstractly. You are often attracted to occupations or careers that require technical know-how. In March you focused on friendships and fun. In April you’ll get a financial reality check. If you’re thinking of making a job change, do so around the third week of the month.
SCORPIO 10/24-11/21 Your fixed sign likes to keep things in control. That slow and steady nature is in for a surprise this month. You cannot ignore an urge for change. A new moon on April 20 brings unexpected developments. The good news will look more like an opportunity than a challenge, so go for it. Once the sun goes into the sign of Taurus, you’ll be meeting the right people at the right time.
PISCES 2/19-3/20 Work demands will keep your office and world grounded until the first week. The April 4 total eclipse may require you to improve your job. Mars will enter the area of your day-to-day work routine. The new moon on April 20 may have you taking charge of some project left undone.

Wings & Wheels Event shines a ray of light for pediatric cancer patients By Caitlin Wendt
A
mother only wishes a happy and healthy life for her little ones. Chrisie Funari never thought that her daughter, Ava, would be one of the 36 children in the United States who is diagnosed with pediatric cancer every day. At just 18 months old, Ava was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma, and due to the severity of it, she endured more toxic treatments than most adult cancer patients. After three and a half years of traveling around the country to receive the best care, Ava’s body could no longer handle the aggressive treatments and she passed away at age 5.
After the loss of their daughter, Scottsdale residents Funari and her husband, Nick, started Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children (ACFC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to ultimately end the devastating disease. In addition to supporting clinical research and funding new treatment options for children, ACFC has
created the Travel Assistance Program to assist patients and their families with unforeseen travel expenses that are necessary for patients to travel for treatment. Through the program, which launched in January, families are provided support with a variety of expenses including airfare, ground transportation, lodging and food.
Membership is by invitation, please contact Colette Bunch to learn more about the application process: (480) 391-1096 or cbunch@ancalacc.com

“I hope our efforts will be a ray of light for families and children in Arizona and ultimately bring life-saving treatments.” - Chrisie Funari Scottsdale resident Chrisie Funari started the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children (ACFC) with her husband Nick after the loss of their daughter, Ava, to cancer. Children are also provided with a signature backpack that includes various comfort items to keep them occupied during travel and treatment. “When your child is diagnosed with cancer, it is a really dark and isolating feeling,” said Funari. “I hope our efforts will be a ray of light for families and children in Arizona and ultimately bring life-saving treatments.” The community can show its support at the inaugural Wings & Wheels event taking place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at Pulvar Aviation, located at 7332 E. Butherus Dr. near the Scottsdale Airport. Guests are asked to bring two to three new children’s items that can be added to the foundation’s travel assistance program. Items include art supplies,
backpacks, books, electronic tablets, headphones, coloring books, small toys, gift cards, travel pillows and blankets. Attendees of the event will admire private jets and preview luxury vehicles while enjoying wine, beer and culinary treats from awardwinning “Good Morning America” guest, Chef Eric Osborn. In addition to raffle prizes, one guest will win an exclusive Ion Jets membership valued at $2,950. To learn more about the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children and how you can support the cause, visit www.azcancerfoundation.org. Reservations are required for this event; contact thepulse@ n2pub.com to RSVP or more for information.
