GRAND OPENING BRINGS LUXURY OASIS TO THE DESERT. By Alan J. Goldstein Writer and Bon Vivant
T
ucked in a most surprising but easily accessible corner of Scottsdale – better known as the Scottsdale Airpark – sits the new Hirsh Luxury Outlet. The inspiration of Mitchel Hirsh, the boutique opened October 1st, at 7830 E. Gelding Street, Suite 500, with little fanfare and a large collection of men’s and women’s health and beauty products, aromatics, and crystal handpicked from around the globe. “Providing the best luxury goods from around the world is an honor,” Mr. Hirsh said. “We search out the purest ingredients. We rigorously test every product. We guarantee complete satisfaction.” Imagine then, what it might have been like in ancient times when explorers traveled uncharted seas seeking new worlds and untold treasure. Walk into the Hirsh Luxury Outlet and you’ll discover the same kind of excitement and thrill of the chase. The lineage behind the Hirsh Luxury Outlet traces its roots to 1960 in Chicago. Which means they have the knowledge, experience and expertise – that ‘Je ne sais quoi’ – you seek.
The art of shaving and more “no fuss” expert grooming advice.
Yes fellow connoisseurs of all things deluxe, there is an art to shaving. At the new Hirsh Luxury Outlet, their friendly knowledgeable staff will show you how it’s done best. Nicks. Razor burn. Ingrown hairs. No problem. They’ll deftly guide you through their superb collection of name-brand grooming products. From razors and badger-hair brushes, to pre-shave oils and creams, to after-shave balms and colognes, the choices are near infinite. They carry so many unique lines, here’s a small but intriguing sampling.
Start with Caswell-Massey, an apothecary used by the Founding Fathers that dates to 1752. In 1887 the New York Times wrote: “There is no house in the world that handles goods of more absolute and invariable purity and reliability…than Messrs. Caswell, Massey & Co.” You’ll also find edgier, polished offerings from Billy Jealousy and Jack Black. Each distinctive yet both meticulously designed to give your image a boost. And from across the pond there’s Geo. F. Trumper -- known as the finest gentlemen’s barber in London; Taylor of Old Bond Street; Castle Forbes of Scotland; and Bloke from Australia – the genius of Christopher Valiante, a pioneer in fragrance sense memory. Italy and Germany are well represented to with Omega shaving brushes and Merkur and DOVO precision-engineered razors to fit every personality and beard type. Particularly notable is the exclusive Hirsh Luxury Collection. The suite includes shaving gear, shave creams, body washes and lotions, shampoos, and conditioners. “I insist on uncompromising, old world craftsmanship,” Mr. Hirsh noted. “It took us one year to formulate the shave cream. The result is the finest small batch shave cream available.”
Look and feel drop-dead gorgeous.
Many of the sumptuous fragrances, lotions and potions at the new Hirsh Luxury Outlet are unisex, like Dallas designer Niven Morgan who specializes in capturing the essence of exotic locales, and eltaMD – skin care protection recommended by physicians. Yet whether you’re a stay-at-home Mom, career professional or wear many hats, this boutique has your special oneof-a-kind needs covered head to toe, too.
Patented over 100 years ago, a Mason Pearson hairbrush or comb is the ultimate grooming tool. For more challenging hair days, consider the T3 featherweight hair dryer, winner of two Allure Magazine Best of Beauty Awards. Or pamper yourself with Ahava bath sets enriched with Dead Sea minerals, or advanced skin care regimens by EVE LOM. Now add some dramatic accents with Butter London nail lacquers. Then for that perfect crowning touch, slip on an elegant diamond or mother of pearl face timepiece from Seiko, Citizen or Hamilton.
Set the mood and the table with élan.
Living luxuriously is more than a lifestyle, of course. It’s a state of mind. Well the new Hirsh Luxury Outlet will help put you in the perfect frame of mind with their indulgent collection of Trapp and Aquiesse home fragrances, as well as their extensive assortment of Bavarian crystal from Riedel and Nachtmann. Master perfumers using the purest oils and extracts blend Trapp and Aquiesse candles and reed diffusers. They’re innovative and timeless. As for Riedel stemware, Robert B. Parker of the Wine Advocate said it best: “The finest glasses…are made by Riedel. The effect of these glasses on fine wine is profound. I cannot emphasize enough what a difference they make.” A warm welcome to the Hirsh Luxury Outlet. It’s an authentic new destination in the Valley worth visiting today.

IT’S TIME TO REGAIN THE CONFIDENCE YOUR NATURAL TEETH ONCE PROVIDED Would you be surprised if I told you there is a new procedure that can give you a complete set of fixed teeth in one day? This is a new teeth replacement technique By G. Sroujieh, capable of giving DDS, AFAAID patients who are suffering from bad, nonsavable teeth or who have been wearing dentures for a long time a beautiful set of teeth
in one day. With this technique we will be able to use four special implants to attach a new set of permanent teeth. In most cases, patients lacking the minimum amount of bone required to support regular dental implants, and who have been told that they were not candidates for implants, will enjoy the benefit of this technique since it requires less bone volume and does not require either bone or soft tissue grafting. The “Teeth in One Day” technique is a new implant procedure that was originally developed to help people with severe bone loss in the posterior area of the jaws. This

technique offers the solution of fixed teeth for patients who until now have had no other option than wearing uncomfortable dentures. Patients usually leave with entire arches of fixed teeth on the same day of their surgery.
replace it with a permanent strong natural looking one. In the few months following the surgery, known as the healing phase, implants will go through osseointegration, meaning new bone will form around the implants and make a biological bond with them. During this period the patient will be using their new fixed teeth eating and speaking normally. Three to six months after the surgery, a permanent new set of teeth will be made and attached to the implants. The benefits of this technique: - Ideal solution for patients with poor bone volume - Fewer implants can be used, lowering the cost and easier to clean - Boost in self-esteem - Fixed teeth in one day, no need for removal at night or after meals for cleaning - Fully restored sense of taste - Ability to eat all of your favorite food - No more messy adhesive So if you are tired of wearing loose dentures, Teeth in One Day solution will solve your eating and pronunciation problems. You will never have to experience the crippling effect of eating on moving plates, the embarrassment of dentures slipping during speech, messy adhesive, removing teeth at night, or not being able to enjoy eating and tasting food. With this technique at Dr. Sroujieh’s dental office, we can restore your smile and give you permanent teeth in just one day. Say goodbye to dentures forever!
How does it work?
Before considering this technique, it is necessary to have your case evaluated by Dr. Sroujieh. During the initial consultation, we will listen to your concerns and offer you solutions based on your specific problems or needs. A clinical exam will be done and X-rays will be taken. Also, we will need a 3D CT SCAN for your jaws so we can plan your dental surgery virtually on the computer using special software. Impressions or molds will be taken also at that visit to fabricate the new set of teeth in our lab. On the day of the surgery, the remaining teeth, if any, will be removed. Four dental implants will be placed and a customized non-removable prosthetic bridge will be attached to the implants. This fixed set of teeth will be used for 3-6 months, after that we will

t’s that wonderful time of year again where it’s safe to roll down the windows of your car, crank down the top and let the cool breeze ruffle your hair. And that means it’s also time for our annual “Driving Success” issue in which we ask local business owners and executives to talk about their chariots of choice as well as the latest and greatest about their companies. This year, we spotlight the vehicles of a top chef, an art dealer/appraiser, an executive in the aviation field and two business owners from the automotive industry. Does what we choose to drive reveal something fundamental about us, perhaps more than we realize? I’ll let you be the judge, though there’s no question that it’s always interesting! I’m happy to chat with you about it this month at the Airpark Hangar Party hosted by Fox & Fin Financial Group on Nov. 13. Yep, you’re invited. Check out page 61 for details. Happy trails!

Driving Airpark execs on what they drive and what drives them
18 | Scottsdale Airpark News November 2014
oes what you drive reveal something fundamental about who you are? The answer is a resounding yes, to one degree or another. We asked five Scottsdale Airpark business owners and execs to talk about their chariots of choice, how they navigate their goals, and what’s ahead on their roads to success. L
eading the imaginative culinary experience at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa is Executive Chef Chris Masco. With 20 years dedicated to diverse culinary traditions, Masco heads a team of nearly 100 members in servicing all 10 dining establishments at the resort and oversees all banquet events at the venue’s 200,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space. Masco transferred to the Westin’s Scottsdale resort two years ago. Shortly after moving his wife and two kids to the Boulders area by Cave Creek, he decided to purchase his dream car in sparkling-crystal red. How did the Grand Sport Corvette become your ideal vehicle? My dad had a Corvette, and it was always my dream to buy one too. When I was younger, I had the ’85 Camaro Z28 iRoc. I was 18 when I bought it, and it got me into a lot of trouble. I put it away for a while and bought a truck … but I still have it. One day my son, who is 10 years old now, will have the Z28—as long as he drives well for the first year he has a license.
Chris Masco, Executive Chef, Westin Kierland Resort & Spa 6902 E. Greenway Parkway kierlandresort.com DRIVING: 2011 Grand Sport Corvette
How many miles have you put on your baby since you bought it in January? So far, 2,500. If there is even a chance of rain it doesn’t come out. It stays in the garage. I always put the best gas in there, change the oil when needed and wash it every week.
What music do you listen to in the Corvette? Everything from dance techno to ’80s stuff to Metallica. My wife is from Ireland, so of course U2 is her favorite band, and I listen to that. She also likes Madonna, but that doesn’t play in the car. As executive chef, you’ve said your day on the property starts at 6:30 a.m. and wraps up between 7:30 and 8 in the evening. What does a typical morning look like for you? I always say every day is a new day; you never know what’s going to hit you. But typically in the morning, I walk our 11 restaurants, which includes our 200,000 square feet of banquet space. Nellie Cashman’s is our main breakfast restaurant, and that’s usually …continues on page 20
Y
…continued from page 19 the first place I go. I’ll check with the sous chefs to make sure we’re staffed up, and check with my purchaser to make sure everything hit the docks right. Usually by then, my executive steward comes in and we’ll see how his staff is for the day. Then at 9 a.m., I review all the events we have for the next two days, and then it pretty much rolls into lunch production. I’ll go to J.Swilling’s, our pool restaurant, then out to Brittlebush, which is our country club. Then I check on Nellie Cashman’s … and then off to banquets again. I spend the rest of the [pre-dinner day] checking and writing emails and trying to stay away from Human Resources [laughs]. How much of your job involves actual cooking these days? Very little, maybe 5 percent. At home, I’ll make fresh pasta and stews and cook on the grill or use the smoker. I hate to have all that cleanup. What is the biggest challenge in heading up the food operations for such a large resort? Not seeing your family. You spend all
your holidays here. Not doing the things you could with your kids. Best part? Seeing the smiles on people's faces from the food. Also the teamwork it takes with the kitchen—the stewarding of people, and the servers working as one team to get that food out. You’ve done some segments with local TV channels. What’s the secret to cooking on air? What you have to do is forget the cameras are there. At first, I would stare at the cameras and forget what I was doing. Bending your knees helps more than anything; it gets you comfortable. You have to know you have a four-minute segment, prepare for it and practice a couple of times before going on air. The hard part is the talking part. If you were taking the Corvette out for a dream picnic, what would go in the basket? A bottle of Italian red wine (a Borolo usually), a porterhouse steak from Master

Purveyors in New York, a bag of TAYTO chips (potato chips from Ireland), asparagus, sea salt, Caesar salad, and chocolate fudge cake. If someone hasn’t experienced the food at the Westin Kierland yet, what would you recommend they try? For lunch, I recommend they go to Brittlebush and either get the Phoenix slider (shaved beef, roasted poblano peppers, carmelized onions and pepperjack cheese) or the fish tacos (tempura-battered mahi mahi with jalapeno coleslaw). For dinner, I love Deseo’s Millionaire Taco and the Beef Churrasco. Also for dinner, try Nellie Cashman’s Green Chili Griddle Cakes appetizer and the Arizona Stir-Fry entree, which integrates the restaurant’s mining theme with some Chinese influences (many of the cooks for the mining camps were Chinese). Stir-fry ingredients include chayote squash, snow peas, baby corn, peppers, mesquite-smoked potato gnocci and a ginger tomatillo glaze, and it can be topped with shrimp. Mmmm, I’m getting hungry!

SPILLS & STAINS Q : The holidays are near and I have beautiful table linens! I know I run the risk of food and other spills. Should I attempt to treat them immediately on my own or will I be making the stain worse? A: Leave it to the professionals. Even wax is no problem. Bringing the item in as soon as possible helps, as time will set stains. Washing household items at home can have disappointing results. Prestige Cleaners knows how to maintain the shape of your tablecloths and other household linens.

Positive, personalized, passionate German automotive services
P
Interview by Kimberly Hundley • Photo by Tim Sealy
arts Score is a complete European automotive performance shop established in 2010. The shop is run by husband-and-wife team Jason and Leah Amiot, who say they “live and breathe everything European automotive.” Jason, who answers our questions below, has more than 15 years experience in the industry, using his expertise to build and modify powerful and reliable performance cars. Leah runs the office with their dog, Mr. Bentley, who acts as mascot. The shop specializes in Audi, BMW and Volkswagen, and offers highest-quality OEM replacement parts, aftermarket performance parts as well as in-house custom fabrication. Services range from preventative and regularly scheduled maintenance to high-performance upgrades.
How did you come to specialize in German vehicles? We have a great appreciation for German engineering, classic design and motorsports heritage. This appreciation started at a very young age and influenced my decision heavily when it came to picking out my first car. I decided upon a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia and never looked back! The automotive hooks were in deep, and ever since the age of 15, I’ve worked in the industry. I saw a need in the marketplace for a quality German automotive shop that offered the highest-quality service at a fair price. A strong passion for German automotive engineering races through my blood, and I want to be able to share that with everyone. Thus Parts Score was born! Why did you select the Airpark for your base? The Airpark is a Mecca for everything automotive. Plus, there is such a sense of community here that we had to be a part of this neighborhood. People in this area share the same respect for German engineering, classic design and high-quality work that we do. It seemed only natural to

be in the same location where our customers live and work. Tell us about your recent expansion. We don’t just work in the Airpark, we live in the neighborhood and absolutely love it, so our sense of community is that much stronger. We experienced a tremendous amount of growth in the last year since moving to the Airpark from Tempe. Expansion was the next logical step. We don’t plan on moving anytime soon, so we are excited to keep planting roots at our current location. What are these vehicles in the photo? The cars we chose to be pictured with are a BMW M3 and an Audi S4. The BMW M3, one of our favorite personal cars, represents the performance side of our business. This car is supercharged with upgraded suspension, exhaust, wheels and many more modifications. We offer performance upgrades ranging from lighting to forced induction and custom air suspension. The Audi S4, also highly modified by our shop, represents the maintenance side of the business. Today this car is in for a routine oil change, brake service

and new tires. Why is your beagle, Mr. Bentley, a fixture in the shop? We pride ourselves on being a familyowned and -operated business, and it was only natural that Mr. Bentley be a part of it. He has been around cars since he was a puppy and enjoys entertaining our customers. We get a kick out of seeing the smiles on everyone’s face as Mr. Bentley greets them at the front door. He exudes what we are all about: having a positive and personal experience. What are Parts Score's goals for the coming year? To reach out to new customers who are in need of a trustworthy German automotive shop to call their new home.

I like it because it’s rare; there’s not a lot of them out there. It came from the factory with the red interior, and we did the wheels and the grill. What was your first car as a teenager? An S-10 Chevy pickup. That tells you how old I am. I grew up in Oklahoma, and most of the time I drive trucks like the Ford Raptor. How did you wind up working specifically with pro athletes? It kind of happened by accident. I was at a Kansas City Chiefs game about 20 years ago, I’d parked next to player parking, and a gentleman about my size came up and told me he liked the Tahoe I was
driving. He said, “Hey, I’d like you to build me one.” I said, “Sure, call me.” And the guy turned out to be Jerome Woods, all-pro safety for the Chiefs. Then [a couple of other players ordered customizations], and it kind of snowballed and word went from locker room to locker room. Was the Tahoe an example of your professional work, or were you even in the car business then? No, it was my private vehicle that I had done myself. I was still playing basketball [in overseas leagues] after college. What sparked your interest in cars? My dad, who was a college coach, liked cars and always had some around.
A lot of people see a player and will want to charge them more than they should because of their paycheck. We would rather take care of them at a good rate and have them tell everyone in the locker room about us. I’d rather make a dollar on a million people than a hundred thousand on one guy. We also stand by our work. If something goes wrong, most shops will say come back and we’ll fix it. If I sell something to a Boston Celtics player, for example, and something goes wrong, I put someone on a plane to fix it, and we just eat that loss because it’s our fault. …continues on page 26
Other than accommodating intense travel schedules and being respectful of privacy, what has made ProMotorsports sought-after by pro players?
Jim Lewis stands in the handsomely remodeled 8,000-square-foot space in the process of becoming ProMotorsports new home, perhaps as early as this month. The showroom/shop/office is just across the parking lot from ProMotorsports’ original Scottsdale locale, behind Classic Car Spa on Scottsdale Road and Adobe Drive. “It was a good time to invest in a building, and now everything will be under one roof instead of in multiple places,” says Lewis.
November 2014 Scottsdale Airpark News | 25
…continued from page 25 How many professional athletes has your company worked with? As of today, 382. There is no way that we would have a player on every single active major league team (except hockey) unless we’re doing a good enough job for them to spread the word. For instance, Jonny Gomes of the Oakland A’s has sent us five or six of his teammates. What is your involvement with SEMA this November, and what does that kind of exposure do for your cred? We’re taking 11 cars … When companies like Lexus are giving us cars and saying take this car and customize it so we can show people throughout the year what they can do to individualize their own car, they are saying we are someone who can build for them better than they can build in-house. That goes a long way toward establishing validity with the players. Give us an idea what kind of clients you’re talking to a daily basis. Right now, it’s 4:30 p.m. on a Friday. What does your call list look like so far? [Looks through phone.] Chris Paul
with the Clippers; the agent for Brian Wilson (Los Angeles Dodgers); we talked to BFGoodrich; we talked to the Raptor group from Ford Motor Company; I talked to Mr. Jonny Gomes; I talked to Jon Lester with the Oakland A’s; Eric Gordon with the New Orleans Pelicans; TSW Alloy Wheels; and we talked to BMF Wheels; Rigid Lights here in town; we talked to an NFL agent asking about a couple of his players’ cars; we talked to Russell Westbrook, a guard with the Oklahoma Thunder; and we also talked to Isaiah Thomas and P.J. Tucker with the Suns. Do you think having experience as a pro baller gives you unique insight into your clients’ needs? I don’t know if it gives us insight, but I saw how some people were taking advantage. At this point, do you ever get fan fever when you meet certain athletes? Not really. Another reason that the guys work with us a lot is that we’re not too starstruck. And because we’ve been doing this for a while, we oftentimes meet the kids before they get here. Like Blake
Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers); we knew him in college before he got here. How much do you enjoy the sports aspect of your work? I kind of have the greatest job on the planet because it’s my job to work with cool cars and to go to sporting events and meet with clients. How does Barrett-Jackson and the rest of January’s auto-auction week in Scottsdale impact ProMotorsports? Barrett-Jackson is a great event because car guys come from all over the world, and a lot of our clients have us prep a car they want to sell or have us deal with issues that come up after they buy one. When (PGA golfer) Bubba Watson bought the Dukes of Hazzard car (the General Lee) at auction in 2012, we got it going so he could drive it to the Phoenix Open. (There were no lights, so rewiring was required; wouldn’t always start due to transmission problem; carburetor needed to be rebuilt; exhaust was loose.) There is not a lot of time between those two events, but we work fast—another of our specialties. …continues on page 28

…continued from page 27 What brought you to North Scottsdale? When my wife and I were living in Kansas City, I was coming out here every year for spring training because we have so many baseball players. She pointed out I was spending more on travel and dining than a mortgage would cost—and she added that she didn’t like snow. I said, “Oh, do you want to move?” That was about five years ago.

Who owns that stunning 1964 Cadillac Coupe DeVille in your showroom? We built it for Brian Wilson (relief pitcher for Los Angeles Dodgers) and now we’re selling it for him. Because Dodgersplayer parking is where fans can see it, the car is tied to him—it’s become recognizable, so it’s time for him to move into something else. Describe Scottsdale’s ProMotorsports team. We do everything in-house except for paint. There are nine guys here, and everybody has their own specialty. Fortunately, I’m not very good at any of them. If you’re the best person in the room or the smartest person in the room, you’re not in the right room. You need to surround yourself with people who are smarter than you or more skilled than you in order to be successful. Did you ever think you’d be at the top of this industry, working with such elite car clientele? No. I still view it as the guys who were doing it in my garage, just me and my buddies. It still feels like that … until the bills come in. [laughs]
From sales to customizations, about 20 projects were simultaneously underway in late October for an illustrious client list that included Jonny Gomes, Oakland A’s; Isaiah Thomas, Phoenix Suns; Chris Paul, Los Angeles Clippers; Brian Wilson, Los Angeles Dodgers; Dante Cunningham, Minnesota Timberwolves; and several manufacturers’ vehicles headed to November’s SEMA Show.

n 1992, artist Elena Kohn immigrated to the United States from Russia, eventually landing in Scottsdale, where she founded Art Fortune, an online resource for buying and selling art and luxury items. Collectors use the site—which is translated into 20 languages and visited by more than 1.5 million people every month—to display their art or other high-end items to a global market. Kohn, a graduate of the Art University in Moscow, personally provides appraisal services, traveling the world to help clients buy and sell art and collectibles, arrange private sales and make introductions to auction houses such as Christie’s and Fortuna. Recently, a production company shot a pilot for a reality show featuring the vivacious, Russian-accented artist/appraiser and is shopping the concept to networks.
What attracted you to this car? I bought it a few years ago. I kept it because I love it. It’s youthful, and it’s convenient for me because I work with collectors who have art and antiquities, and at times I have to move items from place to place. Haven’t you been tempted to trade her in for a newer model? Almost like an animal, you cannot just get rid of it …continues on page 32

because it gets older. That’s how I feel about the car. The car becomes your friend, and all the fixing you do over the years— we kind of become connected, especially in Arizona, where you drive all the time. I feel comfortable. I feel safe in my car. I know it so well, and I travel a lot. What was your first vehicle? A car was a luxury for Russians. I didn’t buy one until I immigrated to the United States 20-something years ago. It was Volkswagen Rabbit. Tell us about Art Fortune. You know, I started it in 2008 as an art website but realized the same type of client who buys art buys truly high-end cars and other luxury items, so we expanded it. One of the services we offer is high-end appraising, catering to people who like to collect various items. So I travel all the time, because sometimes clients call me to appraise an estate or they want to sell something, or get an appraisal for insurance, or they want to buy a piece … I am very fortunate. I have clients all over the world

We googled you and found a trailer for a reality show. Tell us more! About a year ago, we decided to do a little pilot that is based on what I do—working with all my clients and all the drama that comes with it. I was lucky because I was invited by a production company in Los Angeles. All I can say is it’s in the works and we already have a number of networks who are interested.

In the YouTube teaser, you say, “I'm Baroness Elena von Kohn, Russian royalty living in Scottsdale, Arizona. I'm an international art dealer. My clients: the rich and famous. From Moscow to Manhattan, from London to Los Angeles, I love finding lost art treasures and turning them into fortunes for my clients! It's true, I also love the finer things in life; that's why my BFF is my jeweler! But for me, it's not about the money … art is my passion.” Are you really a baroness? I am, I am. This is a story for another article. [laughs] The production company said they might or might not use it. What kinds of things do you appraise? My specialties are art and antiques, but I can appraise pretty much anything. I just finished appraising a classic Rolls Royce my good friend has and wants to donate to one of the charities here. Of course, I went to classes and courses to get my certification (from the Appraisers Guild of America). But for 20 years, I’ve been working in arts and antiques. My family came from a line of big art collectors, so I was in this world since I was very little. How important are relationships in the world of art collecting? It’s a small group of collectors and they know each other. My business is all about word of mouth, reputation and working with people. After 20 years, I developed that and have a lot of clients. I’m known as one of the leading experts in (antique) European and Russian art. What is the most difficult part of your job? The main challenge is to work with clients. It’s not about the item; it’s always about the clients. Sometimes my clients think they have treasures and I have to find a way—a very ethical way—to break the news and tell them the little value. And sometimes it’s other way around, and the value is so much greater than what was expected. I always hope I will find a treasure for them, but you never know what to expect, which is why this business is so interesting!

What drew you to the Lexus hybrid? I have mainly owned SUVs in the past, but I decided the weekly gas bill of $70plus was getting a little absurd. With my commute, I wanted a hybrid that didn’t look or feel like one. The CT200H is the perfect fit of cost and gas mileage combined with a sporty look and feel. Jon Gilbert, President/Director of Sales, Jet Linx Scottsdale 7916 E. Beck Lane, Suite 200 JetLinxScottsdale.com DRIVING: 2012 Lexus CT200H
Is this your dream car? No, but it does make sense for right now. I’d love to own a Tesla Model S someday. How does the Lexus compare to the first car you ever owned? It’s a dream car compared to that first
one—a used Infiniti G20 that had nothing but issues from the day we bought it. By the time we got rid of it, the maintenance bills were more than we paid for it! What is the jet we see here, and how does it fit into the fleet your clients have to choose from? The aircraft is a Citation II—a light jet. We have the ability to match the aircraft to each client’s needs for a given trip. We can provide light, mid, super-mid or heavy jets, even turboprops if the client desires. Our clients are not locked into a specific airplane, or size. They tell us their needs, and we provide it for them, guaranteed. How much do you fly yourself? Not as often as I used to. Once I decided that I wanted to be in business aviation rather than fly for a living, my personal flying dropped off significantly since I wasn’t trying to build hours for a career. Jet Linx keeps me pretty busy, but I do try to rent aircraft and grab the “$100 hamburger” every now and then. You graduated in 2005 from the University of North Dakota with a bachelor’s in aviation management. What attracted you to this industry?
I’ve known since I was 12 years old that I wanted to be involved in aviation and where I wanted to go to school. My uncle took me for a flight in his airplane, and I was instantly hooked. The University of North Dakota has the best aviation program in the United States hands down, so it was an easy choice when looking at schools. As director of sales, what is a typical day like for you? We make ourselves available 24/7, so each day brings about new experiences and new challenges. We have flights going in and out of our private facility every day, so along with my team, our day revolves around providing our clients with the highest level of customer service for each and every trip. We really try to make the experience as individualized and special as possible. When I’m not greeting flights and speaking with current clients, I’m working on building relationships with aircraft owners in the Valley as well as those potentially interested in joining our Jet Card program. What kinds of inquiries do you get from Scottsdale-area companies and executives?
They are looking to us to be a time machine. They need to hit multiple meetings in multiple locations in as short of a time span as possible. What would take three days flying commercial, we can accommodate in a day. Clients must have high expectations, but what surprises them most about the Jet Linx experience? How we can provide a guaranteed airplane at a guaranteed price with a guaranteed highest standard of safety while also giving each flight 5-star service. Most people are also surprised that our pricing is typically 15 percent to 55 percent lower than our competition. How is the upcoming Super Bowl impacting Jet Linx? With 10 locations nationwide, Jet Linx clients from all over the country will be coming in. Beyond that, we have started fielding inquiries from across North America to provide our services for the event. It’s one of the busiest times of the year for us, so having the Super Bowl in our backyard will make it more challenging, but we have the team in place to handle it and are looking forward to it.

Taking a High Dive Seide goes independent after 27 years as a ‘captive’ insurance agent By Marjorie Rice
I
f there’s anything Douglas Seide knows about, it’s risk. In 1979, the Minnesota native left the familiar surroundings of home, family and his work in the food service equipment industry to start a new career. “We came to Arizona for a visit during the dead of winter,” Seide says. “They were setting records for low temperatures back there. Out here, I had on a short-sleeve shirt and I said, ‘This is January?’ That was when my wife, Joyce, and I decided to make our home in the Southwest.”
Douglas Seide, Patti Konik and Jason Jung
Seide went to work for the building services division of Honeywell in Southern California, and in 1984 transferred to Arizona. And then he took another risk, changing careers yet again, applying his building expertise to insuring commercial structures. Seide joined Farmers Insurance in 1987. “Back then, much of the Airpark was open desert,” Seide says. “I was told Shea Boulevard was kind of the outer limits of the city … The growth since then has been phenomenal because this

is a great place to do business.” For the next 26 years, Seide was what the insurance industry calls a “captive” agent. That meant he only could offer policies from Farmers. During those years, he capitalized on his experience in the food sector and Arizona’s growing commercial construction to service companies in those industries. “Last December, I started thinking about my future,” Seide says. “I real-
ized that I needed more tools in my toolbox—policies from more than one company—to offer my clients.” So this summer, Seide made another leap, opening All Arizona Insurance on Aug. 1 as an independent agent who could offer insurance products from many providers. “Being in my own office means I can provide more diverse service,” Seide says. “With access to multiple coverage plans and a large variety of top-rated carriers, we can provide one-stop shopping for all our customers’ insurance needs. Today, when I talk to a client, I want to be able to work with him to give him three or four quotes on policies that are the best fit at the best price.” Seide’s able to do this by partnering with Couri Associates, a Wisconsinbased “aggregator” that offers insurance products from more than 50 carriers. Seide’s agency also provides personal insurance. “When I was setting up the office, I met Jason Jung, who moved to Arizona after managing personal insurance for an office in Central California,” he says. “Jason knows personal lines and the ins and outs of the independent insurance side, and I know commercial lines really well, so it’s a good balance.” Patti Konik, customer service representative, rounds out the All Arizona team, managing the office administration and fielding customers’ questions on coverage and other issues. “Our mission is to make it easy for clients to do business with us,” Seide says. “We’re committed to continually improving our product knowledge and providing exceptional customer service, so we can establish long-lasting relationships. We pair that with great customer service.” All Arizona Insurance is ramping up, with plans to grow its client base and expand services to the construction industry. Seide has just about wrapped up his course work for designation as a Construction Risk Insurance Specialist. At age 62, what’s it like for Seide to make a transition like this? “It was a high dive, but I had done my analysis and I know this was the right direction for me,” he says. “I feel like I’m 10 years younger. I’m not ready to retire—I don’t know if I could retire, ever. What would I do?”

Betsy McKellips and Dee Dee Maza at Zulu Caffé
JET SET CUISINE
Zulu Caffé, Ciao Baby Catering take dining to new heights By Marjorie Rice
D
ee Dee Maza and her Ciao Baby team at Scottsdale Airport know that when you’re catering, you have to be prepared for anything. Take the time bees attacked the main course—and the cooks—at a barn where 225 hungry wedding guests were getting seated for dinner. Quick thinking and the chef’s passion for Saran Wrap saved the day. The chef is Brian Ford, and he loves to wrap things in Saran Wrap. Anything. Including Maza’s purse one evening when she left it behind at Zulu Caffé, the airport eatery also operated by Maza, Ford and their partner, Betsy McKellips. “Brian likes Saran Wrap so much, we
bought him some for his birthday a few years ago,” Maza says. “Any time we do an event I say, ‘Brian, do you have to use so much Saran Wrap?’ It takes forever to get it off.’ He bought me a slicer.” When the bees attacked the chicken at the wedding, Ford was prepared. “He had the chicken wrapped so tightly the bees couldn’t get to it,” Maza says. “If it had been any other chef, the food wouldn’t have gone out.” It’s challenges like that that keep the business fresh and fun for Maza and her partners. In 2011, Maza’s company got the contract to operate a restaurant onsite at Scottsdale Airport. Zulu, located in the

terminal, is open 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. weekdays for breakfast and lunch. It serves Airpark employees and visitors, delivers food to the FBOs (fixed base operators) and provides the kitchen for Ciao Baby’s in-air and event catering. McKellips, whose experience centers on marketing, customer service and sales, manages Zulu Caffé, in-flight catering, events and marketing. Ford, former executive chef at renowned Quiessence restaurant and the Farm at South Mountain, manages both restaurant and catering worlds. It took a lot of work to bring the airport facility up to the team’s standards, recalls Maza. “Things weren’t functional,” she says. “We tore out the bar, installed tile

on the walls and did a lot of cleaning and painting. We also replaced some of the kitchen equipment.” Zulu’s menu sticks pretty much to basics—but with the panache that comes from quality ingredients prepared by a chef with Ford’s chops. Breakfast serves up the classics—fruit, French toast, breakfast sandwiches, burritos and the like. But Ford kicks it up a notch with dishes like the challah French toast topped with bananas Foster. Lunch—sandwiches, salads and burgers—also leans heavily on the basics. But the BLT is slathered with pesto aioli instead of plain mayo. Arugula atop the applewood bacon adds a peppery punch. Want something light for lunch? Sample the cheese board with fruit, nuts, crostini and local artisanal cheeses, or olives marinated in orange, fennel, rosemary and roasted garlic. Hungry for heartier fare? Dig into the Zulu Blue Burger with caramelized onions, chipotle aioli, fried egg, pickled jalapenos, bacon, Gorgonzola and
aged cheddar. Have a yen for something homey? Dig into the award-winning Green Chili Mac ‘N Cheese (Phoenix New Times best Mac ‘N Cheese for 2013). “We’ve gained a lot of regulars,” McKellips says. “We change some dishes on the menu as seasons change, but we’ll never take that off.” Just seven people staff the restaurant, the chef and two cooks, and four servers. “When the restaurant is open, we’re all hands-on,” Maza says. For catered events, on-call employees are brought in. “Unlike other caterers, we don’t book 30 events a month,” Maza says. “We limit how many we’ll do. Brian wants to have his hands on everything.” Ciao Baby stages events at the restaurant, the terminal and in hangars operated by the FBOs. “We do all of Signature Flight Support’s events. We’re doing a big Super Bowl party at Pinnacle Aviation for a large magazine, and a Super Bowl watch party for pilots at Landmark Aviation,” says Maza, describing the hangars as blank canvases that allow the team’s stylists to create stunning events. The guest list can range upward of 2,000 people at the larger events, Maza says. “Whether it’s 10 people or 1,000, they’re going to get our best.” Ciao Baby, which has exclusive privileges to have events in Scottsdale Airport’s private hangars as well as the terminal, is now focusing on expanding its event services, delivering the kind of quality associated with top venues in Las Vegas and New York City. “We just teamed up with a company called Fresh Wata, out of Las Vegas,” Maza says. “We’ve catered events for them outside of Arizona, and we want to partner with them to bring events that aren’t normally booked here …We’re also teaming up with Sound Lighting FX so we can put together an event at a competitive price.” Going forward, the Ciao Baby team hopes to expand and update Zulu Caffé, perhaps scheduling monthly wine dinners after the crush of the Super Bowl is over. The company also is branching out, catering in-flight meals for Scottsdale Airport customers, many of whom ask for gourmet food and presentation, which is right in Ford’s sweet spot. The meals range from box lunches to more exotic fare. “We’re constantly evolving and changing,” McKellips says. “That’s the most fun part. That and eating Brian’s food.”

The effort to move the historic watering hole Greasewood Flat to a location south of Dynamite on 128th Street has been abandoned, reports Independent Newsmedia Inc. Plans are moving forward to develop the 48.8-acre property at 27375 N. Alma School Parkway into a Taylor Morrison Homes subdivision. HomeSmart International founder Matt Widdows and Utah businessman Mark Bullock recently bought a 66,800-squarefoot building north of Loop 101 and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard for $7 million, reports Phoenix Business Journal. HomeSmart, a residential real estate brokerage firm, is expected to move its corporate offices from 32nd Street and
Camelback Road in Phoenix to the Greater Airpark locale early next year. Two major tenants have moved into Scottsdale Executive Office Center on the Greenway-Hayden Loop: Ingram Micro Inc., a Santa Ana, Calif.-based firm, opened a technology incoming call center and occupies 14,926 square feet; PHX Architecture relocated from a central Scottsdale location into 6,159 square feet. Cushman & Wakefield of Arizona negotiated the leases. Other tenants include Trivita, Stella & Dot, MWA Intelligence, and Landmark Education. CBRE has completed a 20,000-square-foot office lease at Element at Kierland, 14614 N. Kierland Blvd. The space will serve as the new headquarters for SheKnows, a women’s lifestyle media platform that currently operates out of 16101 N. 82nd St.,
Scottsdale. The move gives the company an office suite with a mix of private meeting rooms and open-concept workspace. MAC purchased Element at Kierland (previously known as Kierland Fairways) in February 2014 with the intent of bringing new life to the 55,268-square-foot office building. Property renovations are slated to be unveiled in November.
Element at Kierland will be new home for SheKnows.

Scottsdale Bedrooms rolls out with $40,000 mattress
W
ould you pay $40,000 for a bed mattress? In late October, Scottsdale Bedrooms launched its new store at 8180 E. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd., near GreenwayHayden Loop in the Airpark. Its focus is beds and mattresses—the “heart” of the bedroom. Unlike mass-market bedroom and mattress showrooms that may have a specific “luxury line” with limited selection on hand, Scottsdale Bedrooms has all nine models of the ViSpring luxury beds in the store for customers to try, according to creators, Kay and Phil Massaro and Travis Kroodsma, the exclusive Arizona distributor for ViSpring, Open beds, and of some newly released beds by Aireloom. The $40,000 mattress is made by ViSpring and is handcrafted in England from natural-sourced Scandinavian spruce, Shetland Isle wool, silk, cashmere and other 22 materials. Scottsdale Bedrooms is the only place the mat-
tress may be purchased in Arizona. Kroodsma and the Massaros decided to rebrand their North Scottsdale store, European Home, in response to the feedback they heard from clients, who said the mattress was improving their lives as friends, family and co-workers noticed an improved positive attitude and less grumpiness, which they attributed to a good night’s sleep. In addition to offering several ViSpring models that start around $6,000 and go up to $40,000, Scottsdale Bedrooms introduced a new luxury line called the “Open” mattress, which starts in the $3,000 range. The line features beds and accessories merging high-quality natural materials such as organic stretch-cotton covers, organic Plein Air Wool, natural Talalay latex foam and independent, flexible, steel coils. “You can literally unzip an Open mattress to see what’s inside to know that only natural materials are utilized,” said

Wine Gallery uncorks in downtown Lawrence Dunham Vineyards brings taste of Cochise County to Scottsdale
A
s Arizona’s wine industry continues to gain national attention, one estate winery is giving Valley imbibers yet another reason to clink glasses with the Lawrence Dunham Vineyards Wine Gallery tasting room and shop opening the first week of November in downtown Scottsdale. Since their first harvest in the heart of Arizona wine country in 2009, winemaker, grower and coowner Curt Dunham and co-owner Peggy Fiandaca have perfected their craft, earning high marks from Wine Spectator and praise from local and national aficionados . This new venture brings an artful taste of their southeastern Arizonabased winery and vineyard to the Valley. “We chose the title ‘Wine Gallery’ for our downtown retail destination because it illustrates our goal of wanting to showcase the artistry of our winemaking and grape-growing process, while also providing a unique venue for Arizona artists and craftspeople to be discovered,” says Fiandaca. “We’ve wanted to bring the essence of our vineyard in the Chiricahua Mountain foothills of Cochise County to Scottsdale for some time now, and are finally ready to pop the cork on a long-awaited dream.”

owever you measure it—by leaps and bounds, or in landuse jargon, by metes and bounds—Scottsdale’s annexation history is momentous. From an area of less than a square mile at incorporation in June 1951 to nearly 185 square miles after a huge annexation to the north in 1984, Scottsdale grew in all directions to secure its future and maintain its identity as an innovative and very special place. Scottsdale’s expansion of land mass had its share of cheers and jeers along the way.

• At the time of our modern-day settlement in 1888 by Chaplain and Mrs. Winfield Scott, Scottsdale was situated amid three incorporated or recognized entities: Phoenix several miles to the west, Tempe to the south, and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to the east. For Scottsdale’s first 63 years as a sparsely populated farming and ranching community, residents and businesses purposely avoided formal recognition as a municipality, and remained an unincorporated area governed by Maricopa County laws, zoning and land planning. • At Scottsdale incorporation on June 25, 1951, Scottsdale’s municipal boundaries were roughly Miller Road to the east, Osborn Road to the south, 68th Street to the west and approximately Indian School Road to the north, a mere .34 square miles with a population of 2,032. • During the 1950s, the town of Scottsdale made several annexations in all directions from its original downtown land mass. By 1960, the town’s area encompassed just less than four square miles. The first annexation took place in December 1951, less than six months after incorporation. • During 1961 and 1962, Scottsdale and Phoenix, as well as area residents, argued back and forth over annexing the Arcadia area. After lawsuits over legal signatures on petitions and other issues were settled, Phoenix “won.” • In May 1961, the town of Paradise Valley incorporated. Many proponents said they wanted to avoid being annexed by Scottsdale or Phoenix, and to control the future of the town’s lifestyle and character. …continues on page 50

rememberwhen …continued from page 49 • In 1962, Scottsdale and Phoenix waged legal and political battles over annexation of the area bounded by Gold Dust Avenue to the south, Scottsdale Road to the west, Pima Road to the east and Bell Road to the north. This desirable area included the former Thunderbird II airfield, then owned by the Arizona Conference, Seventh-day Adventists. Phoenix was eyeing the field as a potential airport; Scottsdale residents and City Council worried that if Phoenix annexed this area, it would curtail any future opportunities for Scottsdale to expand northward. During fall 1962, three issues grabbed headlines in the Scottsdale Daily Progress: the Cuban Missile Crisis (resolved in late October), the financial woes of City Hospital of Scottsdale (resolved when the Baptists took it over in early November) and the Phoenix vs. Scottsdale annexation of the Thunderbird II area (resolved Nov. 10, 1962, when the area—now extending only as far north
as Greenway Road—was annexed by Scottsdale. Two weeks later, Scottsdale annexed parts of the McCormick’s ranch into the city, further solidifying claim to land north of the city center (the remainder of the McCormick’s ranch was annexed into Scottsdale in 1967, three years before it began transition from Arabian and Angus farm to a master planned community). • On March 4, 1963, Scottsdale’s City Council passed an ordinance that annexed a 34-square-mile area north of the thencity limits, literally doubling the size of the city overnight. The area, north of Bell Road and east to 132nd Street, included most of the southern portion of the McDowell Mountains and increased the city’s size to 72 square miles. According to an article in The Phoenix Gazette, Phoenix officials were shocked by the action. Six weeks after this major annexation, the Scottsdale City Council appointed a Citizens Advisory
Committee to study growth of Scottsdale, and six months later, George Fretz was hired as the city of Scottsdale’s first planning director. Fretz and city officials put plans in motion to form the Scottsdale Town Enrichment program through which residents could prioritize what civic and cultural infrastructure their growing city needed. The city’s first General Plan was also formulated during this early 1960s time period. • A 3,520-acre area east of Scottsdale that included Taliesin West and the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture was annexed into the city by an ordinance passed on April 18, 1972. Olgivanna Wright, the famed architect’s widow and leader of Taliesin West, signed the annexation petition. According to an April 19, 1972, article in The Arizona Republic, several landowners opposed annexation. The article stated, “Scottsdale city officials had

indicated they long have wanted to bring the tract, located in the northeast portion of the Paradise Valley, under Scottsdale’s control to facilitate overall area planning and land use.” This annexation brought Scottsdale’s land area total to more than 74 square miles. • Over a 10-month period in 1972, community leaders and city officials attended seminars conducted by The Brookings Institution, discussing alternative futures and development policy for Scottsdale. Among the recommendations issued in 1972: “Build at a neighborhood scale which ensures open space, environmental integrity and a full range of essential community facilities … Annex additional land to protect our environment and for sound boundaries … Concern for the environment will be the cornerstone of all development … Open space and recreational facilities in the McDowell Mountains will be actively sought.” • On May 20, 1975, the Scottsdale City Council voted to annex 17 square miles that extended the city limits to the new town of Fountain Hills. The southern foothills of the McDowells were part of this new territory. The following year, the Northeast Area Plan (NEAP) was drawn up to guide land use in the newly annexed part of Scottsdale. The plan included provisions for open space, a trail plan, scenic corridors and other environmentally friendly concepts. • On Dec. 1, 1981, the Scottsdale City Council voted to annex 16.2 square miles that included Pinnacle Peak Mountain. On Jan. 5, 1982, the city of Scottsdale annexed Maricopa County land that included the area east of Pinnacle Peak and the northwest portion of the McDowell Mountains, adding 10.3 square miles to the city and about 600 new residents. The area was then rezoned and a general plan was ratified.

Hiring a Retirement Specialist By Thomas K. Brueckner, Strategic Asset Conservation
T
he advisor who helped you to get to retirement is very often not the same specialist you’ll need to get you through retirement. If you’ve arrived at your sixties with financial scar tissue still visible all over your retirement accounts, you’re not alone. The volatility over the last 14 years has devastated so many investors, even as they poured precious assets into the capricious environment that was Wall Street from 2000 to 2014. You understand that
now is the time to emphasize preserving—at least as much as growing—your accounts, for you and your spouse, as well as any legacy you hope to leave your children. As such, you now believe that the majority of your holdings should be in safe, guaranteed instruments, with a minority share remaining in a conservatively managed and well-diversified equities account. Regulators, CFPs and actuaries have long maintained that the older investors

get (and the further into a sustainable retirement), the less risk they should be taking. However, you are then faced with a conundrum. The advisor who handles this now smaller at-risk piece often doesn’t have the perspective or expertise to also handle what should be the larger, safetyfocused piece. As a revealing study in Financial Planning showed, most risk-based advisors are woefully out of touch with the primary goals of their retired clients: When clients were asked what their top concern was, 86.6 percent said “losing their wealth.” When their advisors were asked the same question, only 15.4 percent believed losing wealth was the most important issue to those same clients. The investment charts used by many advisors still assume reinvested dividends—even though most of you have begun enjoying that dividend income in retirements. (Incidentally, those charts also don’t include fees, expenses, taxes or inflation.) The clichéd “past history is no guarantee of future performance” statement remains in evidence like a compliance disclaimer, even as you and your spouse yearn for common-sense candor in plain English, together with the approach and product recommendations that should accompany it. You are at precisely the stage in life where you want guarantees—guarantees against market losses, accompanied by tax advantages, leverage for heirs, and reasonable rates of return. As
we often ask new prospects, “If you’ve already won the game, why are you still out on the field?” In the same way that many of us have a dentist, a tax preparer and an estate planning attorney, a primary care physician and a specialist based on past treatment history, so too should we have two financial advisors; a growth money manager whose specialties are risk-based, and a safe-money advisor who specializes in guarantees, income-planning, wealth transfer, long-term care planning, and reasonable rates of return on your money. When you choose these two financial specialists, if either of them are unwilling to work with the other on your behalf, you should seriously consider finding a replacement. Specialties should be respected, not disparaged, especially when one is dealing with monies that it’s taken one’s client 40 years to save. After all, it’s not their money; it’s yours. Thomas K. Fashion STARS Fundraiser unveils unseen collection by designer for Marilyn Monroe
N
ot smiling simply isn’t an option at the STARS annual brunch, a fashion show unlike any other. “What differentiates Fashion STARS from other fashion events in the Valley is that our participants—who are all adults with developmental disabilities—walk the runway alongside professional models,” says Toby Amir Fox, STARS director of development. “You can feel the excitement in the room the first time one of our STARS models take stage. And the confidence and joy they exude is contagious. Guests leave Fashion STARS beaming from ear-to-ear.” New this year, Fashion by Robert Black will present a private collection by Hollywood designer William Travilla, best known for the designs he did for Marilyn Monroe—including the
iconic white “subway grate” dress worn in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch. This collection has never been shown to the public, and will feature original Travilla pieces from the 1950s to 1980s. Tickets are $100 each or $1,000 for a table. The fundraiser uses fashion to build awareness of STARS’ mission to improve the lives of individuals with developmental and cognitive disabilities. Guests will enjoy a full-line champagne brunch buffet followed by a professionally styled runway fashion show with models from FORD Robert Black Modeling Agency and fashions from Fashions by Robert Black and Dillard’s. As is tradition, a select group of STARS participants will be fashionably featured in the “grand finale” curtain call.
“STARS serves individuals with a range of disabilities, including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and seizure disorders, and Fashion STARS is a celebration of our participants and the incredible things they are capable of,” says Fox. “At STARS, we believe that the impossible can always be broken down into possibilities, because life with a disability truly is filled with possibilities.” Throughout its 41-year history, STARS has provided an array of services in three primary areas: Day Programs, Vocational & Employment Services, and Transition Services. STARS serves 200 individuals daily. Programs are available at both Scottsdale locations: 7507 E. Osborn Road and 11130 E. Cholla St. Sponsorship opportunities may still available. Network: Facebook Strategy: Blend in Facebook is a healthy mix of business and pleasure, so post messages that maintain that balance. Marketing messages should blend nicely with updates from family and friends, while also encouraging click-throughs. A friendly, conversational tone doesn’t feel boring or spammy, and fits in with more personal content in users’ news feeds (but keep it short and sweet).
Network: Twitter Strategy: Be brief Twitter’s 140-character limit has always set it apart from other social networks. That limit includes spaces and the characters in links and images. The moral: Choose words wisely. Instead of posting a link to an article, for example, just tweet a summary of it. Be direct and ask yourself: “Would I click on this tweet?” If not, keep editing. …continues on page 60

Network: Instagram Strategy: Hashtags More than just images and videos, Instagram is about hashtags. Hashtags allow you to reach a broader audience by being part of a bigger conversation. Search existing hashtags or create your own. Asking fans to share a customized hashtag in their captions spurs momentum in your marketing campaigns and creates crowdsourced content that can be shared across other social networks.
Network: LinkedIn Strategy: Professional Discussions Content should be relevant to your industry and encourage other experts in your field to share and discuss. This is a professional platform and
has a different tone from other networks, but it should still invite commentary. Try posing questions and asking for opinions so followers will feel like part of the discussion.
Network: Google+ Strategy: Image sharing Google+ is one of only two social networks (Twitter is the other) that allows users to share GIFs in their follower’s streams. Images weigh heavily here, so rework content to include compelling pictures that tell a story, or create a GIF that shows fans how something is made. The goal is strong images and repurposed content that users can consume from a new point of view. When sharing content across social networks, the key is to tailor it appropriately. At Fasturtle, we specialize in social media
marketing that helps clients achieve higher user engagement and broader audience reach. I wish you all the best with your digital marketing success! Scottsdale dentist creates a solution
for disappearing dental insurance
D
r. Jeffrey Clark, a North Scottsdale general dentist with 20 years of experience, has noticed a paradigm shift in the number of clientele who don’t have dental insurance. The increasing lack of coverage inspired him to create an alternative annual membership plan to help patients by cutting out the middleman: insurance companies. “I think people are dropping their dental coverage because of the increased costs for medical insurance overall,” he says. “Even though the cost for dental insurance is relatively cheap if paid on a monthly basis, the real question is what are you getting for that monthly investment?”
Insurance Facts and Drawbacks American Telephone provides design, deployment and management of communications solutions for entire states of Arizona and California. • VoIP Communication Systems • Traditional TDM Systems • Hosted Solutions • Telecommuter & Multiple Location Solutions • Unified Communications • Call Center Solutions • Cabling – Voice & Data • Business and Hospitality • Authorized Mitel & NEC distributor System Sales – Service – Installation Since 1984
Typically, people have three types of dental-insurance plans to choose from: PPO, HMO or indemnity plans—and all have drawbacks. “PPO plans allow you to go out of network, but can result in higher fees,” says Dr. Clark. “HMOs do not allow you to go out of network; the restrictions are higher and the quality can suffer. Indemnity plans allow more freedom but are much more expensive.” Another concern of patients with traditional dental insurance is the yearly maximum-dollar amount that companies will pay out. “Usually coverage ranges between $1,000 to $2,000 per year, and unfairly has been at these levels since the 1970s,” says Dr. Clark, adding that elective procedures such as Veneers, Invisalign, implants and even tooth-colored fillings are not always covered either.

To provide a solution for patients that don’t have insurance or who may want to terminate their plan due to restrictions, Dr. Clark’s office has devised an alternative:
62 | Scottsdale Airpark News November 2014
the Dental Savings Plan (DSP.) “We are essentially trying to cut out the middleman—the insurance companies— in order to give you, the patient, more benefit for your dollars,” Dr. Clark says. “It works like a Costco membership plan starting at $125 per year, and it entitles our patients to 15 percent to 50 percent of all dental procedures, including cosmetics, with no limits, no waiting periods, no deductibles, no claims, no pre-authorizations and no treatment restrictions.” Patients don’t have to worry about referrals to specialists either. “We work very closely with an oral surgeon, a periodontist, endodontist and an orthodontist who will provide the highest quality of care while honoring the plan,” Dr. Clark explains. The best part, he adds, is that patients have complete control over their healthcare. “That means you could restore as many teeth as you want—not the one tooth a year the insurance plans will cover.” More: 480-585-1853; jdclarkddsaz@gmail.com; www.scottsdaledentalexcellence.com

“I
’ve fallen and I can’t get up” is no joke. The line from the TV commercial for a medical-alert device has become a punch line over the years, but falling is a flesh-and-blood danger for older people. Injuries from falls rob many seniors of their independence, their mobility and even their lives. After his own father fell three times within a week of getting out of the hospital, North Scottsdale physical therapist Sandy Goldstein was determined to create a one-stop solution for fall prevention: MEASURAbilities, his niche practice that measures people’s ability to perform and also gives them strategies and products to prevent falls. “We are the only company that takes people all the way through. We hold their hand through identification of the problem to providing solutions, without them ever having to go anywhere else,” says Goldstein, who operates MEASURAbilities with his wife, Deena. Though a vast amount of information on fall prevention is available, Sandy’s research revealed nobody was pulling it all together. Taking a comprehensive

…continued from page 63 approach, Sandy created a nine-point, fallrisk assessment that includes a check of the home environment, where most injuries occur. “You would be amazed at how many seniors are at home and it’s not adapted appropriately to prevent falls,” says Sandy, who poured through tons of research to make sure his programming would effectively address pertinent areas. “Those nine
bullets, I didn’t invent them. This is where people are at risk.” As part of MEASUREAbilities’ service, Sandy comes to a client’s home and screens for such factors as cognition, medication overlap, footwear and vision impairment. If someone, for example, is putting on flipflops to go to the bathroom, the shoes are identified as unsafe, right then and there. Balance and strength assessments are an integral part of the service because, surprisingly, people often don’t know
where their impairment lies, Sandy says. “Balance problems could be related to feet, vision or the inner ear. Another area people are usually unaware of is how weak their legs have gotten. Lower-extremity weakness is a large factor for fall risk.”
Walker Education
When Sandy’s father went into the hospital for surgery in his late 70s, he had strong legs from years of horseback riding. But when he was released, his legs had

weakened and he was given a walker to use for the first time. Like many patients, he wasn’t thoroughly trained on how to navigate with the walker and ended up falling. “The incidents of hospital readmission post-discharge is very high,” Sandy says. “People get discharged—I don’t want to say irresponsibly, but let’s just say without a very comprehensive plan. They get home and they haven’t had proper training on how to use the walker or proper follow-through on making sure they know what to do, for example, when they get up at night [and use the walker to go to the bathroom].” MEASURAbilities works with clients to make sure they are using their walkers correctly. Sandy, a certified disability management specialist as well as a licensed PT, also provides one-on-one physical therapy, a service that is often covered by insurance. “It’s so rare for a patient to be seen every single time by a therapist who is licensed and not be passed off to a technician or an assistant. That is one of the keys to our business,” he says. As part of its “one-stop” solution, MEASURAbilities recommends and actually installs needed environmental modifications to make the home safer, such as grab bars, nonslip surfaces, commode lifts, transfer chairs, etc. One of Deena’s favorite products transforms tile, travertine and marble floors into nonslip surfaces. “It’s a treatment, like getting a perm, that opens up the pores of the tile so when it’s wet, it actually has friction,” she says. “And there is no visible change to the tile. It changes on a molecular level.” The treatment can also be used on porcelain or any other hard-mineral surface, so bathtubs and showers can be made safe without the use of unsightly rubber mats. “We have it in our own bathroom at home,” Deena says. “I was doing ‘holiday on ice’ on our tile floor after a shower, and now I can walk across the floor wet.”

The ‘Not Me’ Challenge
Once people agree to take the risk assessment, they are pleased by what goes forward, but the biggest challenge is getting them to take it in the first place, says Sandy. When MEASURAbilities exhibits at health fairs and offers people a free fallrisk screening, those most in need of the feedback walk right by. “And the ones who don’t need it come over and show off,” says Sandy. “It’s frustrating because we want to …continues on page 66 November 2014 Scottsdale Airpark News | 65

identify and intervene for people at risk of falling,” says Deena. “Intervention is part of prevention.” Sandy agrees. “People have egos and don’t want to admit they are at risk. But studies show just getting a risk assessment and identifying where your risk is—just doing this one thing—is extremely effective in decreasing the rate of falls.” The statistics speak for themselves: More than one in three adults 65 and older will fall in a given year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Within six months, two-thirds will fall again. To get people talking about falls, the Goldsteins frequently speak at community health events and do presentations for home-health companies and organizations like Silver Sneakers. “Caregivers are the first ones who contact us many times for someone who is a fall risk,” says Deena, adding that falls are the leading cause of accidental death among those over age 65. Unfortunately, individuals don’t usually take action on their own behalf until after there is a crisis, says Sandy.
“I hear it a lot. Someone is in denial, and they don’t want to pay for whatever changes they need to minimize their risk. And then, a day or two later they fall and we get a call. It happens all the time.” Most of MEASURAbilities’ clients are between the ages of 50 to 80, and often have been recently released home from the hospital. Either they or a family member has recognized they are at risk and asked for an assessment. The Goldsteins urge those who are at risk of falling to take proactive measures. “People don’t realize that one fall can change the direction of your life,” says Deena. “Preventing falls is our goal. If you need someone to step in and help, that’s where we come in.”

This month’s question:
So … how is social media REALLY working for you? By Kimberly Hundley barrage of “do’s and don’ts” rain upon today’s entrepreneurs, with experts dispensing guidance on every front. The roadmap to best practices may seem black and white, but there are a thousand shades of gray dependent on an individual business’s needs. To add some perspective, Scottsdale Airpark News is asking local companies to honestly share their experience with various “rules of the road.” This month, we spoke with Renee Wittrock, co-founder of College Prep Mastery, to give us the unvarnished truth about how her company’s social media outreach on various platforms has benefitted the business. We also invited Eric Olsen of Fasturtle, a digital marketing company in the Airpark, to respond to Wittrock’s experience and answer some of
her questions. (Next month: So … how is that new website REALLY impacting your business?)
COLLEGE PREP MASTERY 4300 N. Northsight Blvd. Suite 119 712-792-1920 Collegeprepmastery.com Co-owners Chip and Renee Wittrock College Prep Mastery, a 2013 Sterling Award Micro-business finalist, is a fullservice college-planning package that saves families time and money. Planning time is typically cut by more than 70 percent, saving the average family more than $4,000 per year in college, which is a $14,000-plus return on investment. Social media: Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn
Website features: Video, links to social media Describe your start on Facebook with www.facebook.com/collegeprepmastery. Initially, we had a firm work on our social media for us. We felt it lacked "our message," so we hired someone in house for a year, and that was better but still lacked the message that we—the experts— wanted to send. So now when we post, we do it ourselves. We had no real goals except engaging with customers. We have been on for three years. How did your Facebook activity evolve? as a way to gain likes; we wanted to have real communication with our customers, and it did not work out that way. We have gone away from FB as a means of communication with our prospects and customers. How many FB likes do you have now, and how many other businesses have liked your page? We have 1,771 likes. I don't know how to find out how many other businesses have liked our page. Has the reality of Facebook met your business expectations? It has not. For the return, I think it is a waste of time. Is there a particular frustration you have regarding Facebook that you would like addressed? I would like to figure out the best way to use it in about 15 minutes per day where it would be a resource that we could use to communicate with prospective students and parents. Tell us about your use of video on your website and YouTube, and how it’s
helped your business. We have both professional and nonprofessional videos. We some get likes on YouTube. I do not think it has helped at all. What kind of feedback are you getting on your videos and how many views? We have one video that has over 15,000 views, and the rest have an average of 10. I don’t know how to see comments or feedback. How is your website working, and do you have any plans to change it to further your goals? Our website is an awesome resource for parents and students. However, we used so much video, I think people find it a bit confusing. I do. What about LinkedIn? I love LinkedIn. People are professional, and you have a great resource to reach out to other businesses. I do not use it for the advancement of my business. I use it to help others with theirs and to keep up with groups. How do you use the e-book provided on your website?
We give our e-book as a free resource, and that is how we connect with new prospective students and parents. Our main online resource is InfusionSoft. We have a large opt-in database of families that we provide weekly tips and advice to via email. This is our primary communication tool, and it is awesome. What would you like readers to know about College Prep Mastery? When our college planning process is used, families eliminate the guesswork, find the major that is the best fit for their student, and get a chance to beat the odds by getting higher test scores, GPAs and ultimately getting into better schools—all for less money. Most people who meet us after putting their students through college say, "Where were you guys when I was struggling through this process?"

…continued from page 70 tal marketing experience. The professionals at Fasturtle and I want to help you and your fellow small-business owners better understand how to effectively manage engagement and set expectations for Facebook posts. For example, prior to Oct. 13, 2014, your last post on Facebook was April 5, 2014. If social interaction is a goal for your company or any small business, it needs to have a goal, a plan to execute that goal and a way to measure success. Facebook engagement rate is measured in interactions. On a Facebook page, that translates into likes, comments and shares of your posts. The answer to the question about average-engagement rates on Facebook pages have usually been the following: • Above 1% engagement rate is good • 0.5%-0.99% is average • Below 0.5% likely means that you need to realign your messages to meet audience expectations Your Facebook engagement rate is likely to fluctuate a lot. So you should be monitor-
ing your rate of engagement on a consistent basis as you keep your marketing objectives in mind. A key to Facebook engagement is to be consistent in posting, whether it’s every day, every other day, once a week or every Thursday. Your community wants to be able to count on you and look forward to your messaging. Engagement is not one-way communication. Ask questions. Start polls. Share photos and videos. People love to give their opinions, so let’s ask for them. A good example of a Greater Airpark business that is successfully engaging followers on Facebook is BeStitched (near Shea and 88th Street). Check out their posts at www. facebook.com/BeStitchedNeedlepoint. To effectively schedule, manage and measure your Facebook and other social media engagement, we recommend Hootsuite; https://hootsuite.com. Every business is a little different online and how they interact with their clients needs to be unique to them. BtoB is different than BtoC, and how to inform and engage will be different as well. As long as you have a plan for your digital marketing, it’s easy to measure what is working
and what is not. The digital marketing plan should consist of your website, search engine, social media, email marketing and mobile goals and objectives. Small businesses need to identify a complete approach: website, mobile, social media, search engine marketing, and online image. Another thing to keep in mind is the percentage of mobile devices accessing the Internet. The number has doubled this year and is expected to double again next year, so it’s vital for websites to be compatible with smartphones. Do you have Adobe Flash on your website? If so, you are limiting the number of people that can access your website through an iPhone or iPad. Remember to set a goal, plan for success, and measure, measure, measure. Best of luck with your digital marketing success! Eric Olsen founded Fasturtle in 2000, providing business owners strategic digital marketing solutions. As a Constant Contact-endorsed presenter on search engine marketing, email marketing and website usability standards, Olsen specializes in empowering owners and their staff with the tools and techniques to expand their brand. NOVEMBER Business Horoscope By Weiss Kelly, PMAFA Whether you’re a small-business owner or have other career aspirations, insights into how the planets influence your work month can help you plan for maximum performance and project success.
ARIES 3/21-4/20 You may have to start off the month by being willing to do a bit of financial backtracking. Full moon on the 6th highlights some issues from the past. Travel- or foreign-related matters will be indirectly influencing some area of your business around midmonth. Good news: a long positive cycle begins at month’s end and you enjoy congenial ties with colleagues. TAURUS 4/21-5/20 Take your time when making choices or going in a new direction (1st-14th). Midmonth is a call for change, and small changes can produce big effects. You’ve made the best of everything the last two to three years, and now those limitations are being lifted. This month, you may be ready to complete a plan or decide to just let go of a former matter. Some offers that you never considered may come your way (17th-30th). GEMINI 5/21-6/21 You are quite skilled in multitasking, November’s aspects will put that talent to good use. Your love a rapid-paced enjoinment, and it will happen later this month. Travel is a strong likelihood the week of the 17th. “Information and education” are two words that take on special meaning as you enter a leaning/training mode in the month ahead. If you want to meet new clients, try new places or resources. CANCER 6/22-7/22 Last month’s stops and starts will disappear, and by the 10th you will be brainstorming and making exciting plans for the weeks ahead. Although it is smooth sailing, you have work to do to successfully launch a project; expect to do most of it yourself. October’s two eclipses reflect worldwide turbulence and are bringing changes to your thinking and work strategy. You may have to do some tweaking. LEO 7/23-8/23 Don’t complain. You’ve had a good six months and this pattern continues well into the year ahead. Lady Luck or Mr. Lucky entered your sign last July, meaning periods of opportunities
keep popping up. Keep an eye open for one or two (especially the week of the 17th) or you may miss out. No other sign enjoys holidays as much as you do, so wrap up deadlines before the 22nd. VIRGO 8/24-9/23 A steady refined approach and attention to details will work to your advantage the first two weeks of November. Once Mars is activated, you can resolve or make headway on a conflict that may occur. Your personal appearance and demeanor play a big role in earnings and encounters with others. Nearly all the planets move forward by midmonth (22nd), allowing you to make quick progress. LIBRA 9/24-10/23 Concentrate on what has to be done and resist getting sidetracked by others’ demands or you won’t fully enjoy all those invites that require your presence. The last half of November is socially charged and gives you opportunities to connect with likeminded businesspeople. One-on-one professional contact can help you attain your financial goals. Just keep an eye on the budget.
long cycle of learning in which discipline and self-commitment yield high-energy returns. You’re back in the race! CAPRICORN 12/22-1/20 The personal transformation that has slowly been underway continues to carry over into your business/work life. Even if you’re not a student, you will be of sorts. Expect success the first week (8th) when a $$ related issue is finalized in some way. You can release a new project by the end of the month. Reduce your schedule so you can enjoy the tradition of this important Thanksgiving holiday. Expect the unexpected (14th17th)! AQUARIUS 1/21-2/19 You are naturally a breaker of barriers and a whiz in social and high-tech scenarios. You continue to have new professional encounters with people this year that carry much potential. Networking and reaching out for further information is to be encouraged this month. A financial situation can be finalized by the 8th. Remain patient with restrictive conditions, as they will change drastically by the end of next month.
SCORPIO 10/24-11/22 You’re on your game this month. November is dynamic, and requires a need to focus on you more! It can and should be all about “moi and “letting go” of nonproductive habits and attitudes that have been holding you back for more than two years. You can be free of restrictions before the year’s end. Some changes occurring with work will be redefining your image and goals over the next few months. Replace that fixity with flexibility.
PISCES 2/20-3/20 It’s unrealistic to expect others to be as understanding and intuitive as you are. November’s aspects bring better verbal communications between you and others, setting the stage for a successful month, starting around the 10th. Some travel may be in store. ave you ever owned a favorite pair of slippers? You know that beat-up pair in the corner of your bedroom that are so worn out yet perfectly imperfect in their ugly state, that they are your absolute favorite thing to slip on after a long day? Or maybe for you it's that one tattered sweatshirt that’s torn and frayed with a few holes. You would never dream of parting with it because it’s you’re go-to piece of clothing—ridiculously soft and
spectacularly cozy. Many of us have items like these. We hold a lot of sentiment for old pieces of clothing that make us feel comfortable in our surroundings. It's a lot like our lives, really. We fall into our comfortable routines and patterns. We get content with how things are. We drive the same route to the office each morning. We place our usual order from our favorite coffee spot. We park in the same area and simply go about our

day the same way, as always. It’s generally more of the same. We eat dinner, we help the kids with homework and get them ready for bedtime followed by unwinding with a favorite TV show, and falling asleep while reading the same few pages of the newest novel. Familiar habits, right? Whatever those patterns and behaviors are for you, they’re your comfort zone. They’re the typical activities that bring consistency and normalcy into
leadership your busy day. The friends and people you spend the most time with, and the activities you enjoy in your free time tend to be the same. And they’re repeated over and over. Perhaps for you, it’s watching your favorite sporting event or going to the same place for dinner and drinks. These familiar habits and routines keep you cozy and in your comfort zone. So what’s the problem with staying inside your comfort zone? Everything you want and deserve in your life lies just outside your comfort zone. Think about those dreams you have about the type of business you want to run. Well, those dreams cannot happen inside that comfort zone. How about that vacation you have always fantasized about taking, but haven't planned yet? It’s right outside your comfort zone. And what about the relationship you’ve always imagined sharing with someone else? You guessed it … it’s just outside of that same old comfort zone. Success and massive achievement come with a price tag, and it’s called clarity of vision. It's also known as hard work, determination, drive, passion and the willingness to do—every single day—the things that 97 percent of the population simply just won’t do. When you force yourself to do something uncomfortable or to do the things that aren’t easy, that’s when growth occurs. When you dedicate yourself to your vision—whether it's to build the business you desire, finally lose that extra weight once and for all, or create the passionate and dynamic relationship you have always wished for—that's when the magic in life happens. People who have great things in their lives don't just easily get them. They work for them. In fact, they work very hard for them. And they don't just work to get those things, they work to keep them. They make deposits into those bank accounts each and every day because they know that to have those comforts, they must push themselves into an oftentimes uncomfortable place. Being fit and healthy, having open and honest relationships, and building a successful and prosperous business all require constant and continuous hard work and dedication. It’s about getting up early, staying up late, starting over, rebuilding and discovering who you are and what makes you truly and genuinely happy. It’s the tough stuff that's so easy
to "not do" because it takes so much work … and those favorite pair of slippers and sweatshirts in life are just so much easier to slip on. So ask yourself this question: when was the last time you did something for the first time? I mean really stretched and pushed yourself to fight for something that you wanted so badly you could taste it? That's the hunger. That's the fire in your belly that drives you each and every day to keep going for it—no matter how hard it is or how long it takes. I’ve been privileged to watch so many people push themselves out of their comfort zones to go after their goals and dreams, creating them once and for all. There’s no more wishing, hoping or praying. It's all about action, and making the conscious choices and decisions that align with getting you there. It's all about what we do at U & Improved. We help people build the businesses, relationships and lives they at one time only dreamed about. The stories are endless and the testimonials are countless. But what I know is this:
we are merely the catalyst. We are the framework for allowing it to happen. No member of our 11-person team can do this for someone without their conscious decision to do it for themselves. It only comes from the commitment to making that "thing" so important that you need it and want it as much as you need air to breathe. There's nothing wrong with the fuzzy slippers or the worn-out and tattered sweatshirt. They serve as the mental respite we all need and deserve. But your soul deserves so much more. It deserves that feeling of having your wishes fulfilled. So go find your comfort zone, and then leave it. Because what your heart truly wants and deserves is just outside of it. Jodi Low is president and founder of U & Improved, a Scottsdale-based leadership training organization that provides personal and professional development programs through heart-based leadership and powerful, performance-based trainings.
