Super Star Car Wash continues expansion
After a successful year of expansion, Super Star Car Wash says by the end of the year, 72 locations will be in operation across four states.
They recently opened a location at 3006 N. Scottsdale Road.
The Arizona-based car wash operator, backed by TSG Consumer Partners (TSG), has set its sights on expanding to more locations in Arizona and beyond as they recently opened locations in Scottsdale, Jacksboro, Texas and Casa Grande.
The most exponential growth has occurred in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex as a result of a recent acquisition of eight Wave Wash locations to add to their current roster for a total of 17 express car washes in DFW.
“While our growth plans are quite aggressive, we look forward to our continued expansion to not only better serve the needs of our customers, but establish ourselves as a pillar in the community through strategic partnerships and philanthropic support,” says Jonathan Kierman, executive vice president of Super Star Car Wash. “We can’t wait to welcome customers new and old to our new locations so they can experience the Super Star difference.”
Looking to 2023, Super Star expects to keep the momentum up with more locations expected to open in the new year, most notably in Colorado, which would expand their growing footprint in the fifth unique market for the company.
In addition to location expansion, Super Star looks to expand its partnerships and support of local nonprofits. The company holds partnerships with the Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres, Grand Canyon University and Arizona Cardinals along with nonprofit
beneficiaries like Big Brothers Big Sisters. They recently donated $20,000 to big Brothers Big Sisters in support of their programming.

Mr. Pickle’s Sandwich Shop expands in California
Mr. Pickle’s Sandwich Shop, which is headquartered at 9332 Rain tree, Suite 120, unveiled its newest franchisee in Hungry Hospitality.
The brand, led by the father-son team of Woody and Jason DeMayo as well as Jason’s lifelong friend and colleague Eli Illishah, takes im mediate ownership of Mr. Pickle’s Fresno restaurant, which is located at 7967 N. Blackstone Avenue.
It has plans to open 20 locations across Los Angeles and the Fresno/ Bakersfield areas over the next seven years.
“This is a full-circle moment for Eli and me,” says Jason DeMayo, chief executive officer of Hungry Hospitality. “Growing up in the Bay Area, I distinctly remember Eli telling me when we were kids that one
day we would own a sandwich shop together. All these years and a million twists along the way, that is exactly what we are doing on a massive scale.”
Though Jason DeMayo grew up in hospitality thanks to father Woody — a veteran of Carl’s Jr., Wing Stop and other restaurant entities over the past five decades — the University of Oregon music major’s focus was music much of his life until the onset of the pandemic. In fact, Jason DeMayo still heads Street Joy, a band that has put out albums and played on major stages including South by Southwest.
“While working in music most of my career, I did dabble in hospitality while living in Southern California prior to COVID-19,” says Jason DeMayo. “When the pandemic hit, I began working with my father’s restaurants as a stop-gap but fell in love with it. Eli, who worked in acting for years prior, was ready to make a move as well, so we put wheels in motion the past several years to align with my father and take the next steps with a brand that we personally love.”
Illishah is a long-time fan of the brand, while Jason DeMayo was introduced to by way of new Mr. Pickle’s chief executive officer Mike Nelson, a veteran of Carl’s Jr., Wing Stop and Subway who worked with Woody DeMayo for decades.
“Since 1995, Mr. Pickle’s has been a premier full service-sandwich shop specializing in innovative sandwiches, salads and catering,” says Nelson, a long-time customer. “During its first three decades, thanks to its company culture, incredible recipes and all its fans, the brand grew from one to 56 locations across northern California. We look forward to growing in partnership with Hungry Hospitality and fellow franchisees over the next several years as we move toward nationwide expansion.”

According to Jason DeMayo, the brand is unique in that it doesn’t turn to big-box vendors for its core ingredients, instead partnering with artisan bakers, regional farms and ranches to source its products.
“You will not see 6-inch and footlong options from us, more specialty breads than uniform options,” says Nelson. Each Mr. Pickle’s restaurant is focused on quality and will feature
all the most popular hot and cold sandwiches, notably the Mr. Pickle, which is chicken breast, bacon, Monterey jack, avocado and the works as it relates to veggies; the Santa Maria tri-tip, which is actual tri-tip sourced from the Santa Maria region topped with specialty barbeque sauce and the works; and Big Jake, a turkey sandwich with cream cheese, avocado and the works. The brand now also has two new sandwiches of note. The first is Listen Linda, named after Nelson’s wife of 36 years. The second, honoring his business partner Dean Johnson’s wife, is the Della’s Deli.

This marks the fifth time in tournament history The Thunderbirds and the WM Phoenix Open have raised more than $10 million in charitable dollars in a single tournament.
“Our Arizona communities coming together to promote and rally behind this world-class event means so much to us and the hundreds of charities and non-profit organizations it supports,” says Michael Golding, current Big Chief of The Thunderbirds. “We are extraordinarily proud of the $10 million raised for Arizona charities during a major bounce back year for us, which positively shows the commitment and togetherness of WM and the PGA TOUR, as well as our incredible fans, sponsors and volunteers.”
The Thunderbirds and the WM Phoenix Open have now raised more than $110 million since 2010 when WM was named title sponsor, and in its 87-year history has raised more than $176 million for Arizona charities.
“Congratulations to The Thunderbirds for once again raising the charitable giving bar and helping hundreds of Arizona’s charities through the WM Phoenix Open,” says WM President and CEO Jim Fish. “As we approach our 14th year as title sponsor of this PGA TOUR event, we are proud of the significant positive results this tournament has delivered for communities and the environment.”
The announcement was made at Hospice of the Valley’s new Dementia Care and Education Campus, a project that officially opened in April. The $150,000 grant from Thunderbirds Charities will support
the Art and Activity Rooms at the Adult Day Club.
“The generosity of The Thunderbirds and Thunderbirds Charities makes a huge and lasting impact on families who need help navigating the challenging dementia journey,” says Debbie Shumway, Hospice of the Valley’s executive director. “Together, we are enhancing quality of life, supporting family and professional caregivers, and providing education and training to help our whole community ‘live well’ with dementia.”
The 2023 WM Phoenix Open is February 6 to February 12 at TPC Scottsdale. “The People’s Open” has been named the Tournament of the Year by the PGA Tour four times. The 2023 edition will mark the 88th playing of the event (one of the five oldest events on the PGA TOUR) and the 14th with WM as title sponsor.

After a record year, WestWorld seeks continued growth
Scottsdale’s WestWorld has long been a center of equestrian activity in the southwest, a home for horse shows and competitions.
Thanks to major investments in recent years and an intentional push to land more, new and bigger events, WestWorld enjoyed another record year.
The venue has evolved from a humble collection of outdoor equestrian arenas called Horse man’s Park when it opened in the early 1980s. WestWorld’s modern era began with its 2014 expansion, when 300,000 square feet of joined, climate-controlled event space was built around the longstanding Equidome arena.
Among many nationally recognized events that call WestWorld home and produced by longtime partners: the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show and the Sun Circuit Quarter Horse Association; each contributed toward the cost of the center’s $51 million expansion.
During the past year, more than 70 events at WestWorld spanned 579 event days at the facility, attracting 500,000 people for an array of vastly different activities and attractions, everything from a sewing expo, the Abilities Expo for the disability community, fitness and powerlifting competitions, equine, car and motorcycle events along with the city’s annual indoor/outdoor 4th of July celebration.
“Scottsdale represents the full appeal,” says WestWorld Director Brian Dygert. “A big, top-rate, flexible facility supported by an incredible team in a great location with world-class amenities all around. That combination is why we have been able to pull events from California, Nevada, Texas and other parts of the country – what we offer here just can’t be beat.”
This steady increase in activity is achieving the desired results on the bottom line. Prior to its expansion, WestWorld often ran at a financial deficit. That was changing for the better when the pandemic interrupted, but in the past two years, the facility has achieved financial balance with direct revenues exceeding operating costs. For fiscal year 2021/22, direct revenue is estimated at more than $6.5 million, the highest in WestWorld’s history.
WestWorld’s full economic impact is far greater than its direct financial balance. A 2019 study by ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business estimated that activity generated at and around the venue creates annual total financial impact at more than $111 million in Scottsdale, and nearly $184 million in Maricopa County.
These positive financial trends are expected to continue as WestWorld’s reputation as a year-round event venue of limitless possibilities grows.
A perfect example of the venue’s ability to attract new users is WestWorld’s growing relationship with the National Reined Cow Horse Association. The NRCHA signed a three-year contract to host its DT Horses Western Derby in Scottsdale.
In June (previously a down time for WestWorld), the NRCHA Western Derby welcomed more than 1,400 entries and 800 horses, nearly a 30% increase in entries from the previous year. Attendees flocked to local hotels and restaurants — but also took advantage of WestWorld’s 400 full-hookup RV spaces on site.
The Arabian Horse Association of Arizona has presented the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show since 1955, and in recent years, they have added other national shows for breeders, youth and amateur riders. Other new equestrian events produced by different organizations have joined the calendar as well, featuring dressage, quarter horses and many other breeds and disciplines.
Although an equine facility at its core, WestWorld perhaps shines bright for the week in January when the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction takes center stage. The homegrown event has become an international attraction, made even bigger and better within the expanded footprint of the 300,000-square-

In 2022, Barrett-Jackson celebrated its 50th anniversary with its most successful auction ever, welcoming hundreds of thousands of guests, auctioning more than $200 million in collector automobiles and automobilia, and raising nearly $9 million for charity. West World and Scottsdale were in the spotlight for nearly 40 hours of television coverage.
What’s next?
With lessons from the past seven years in hand, a new WestWorld master plan is in the works that will strengthen the facility and how it operates, improve its ease of use and access, and address moderniza tion of its electrical, IT infrastructure, parking and wayfinding.
Scottsdale voters approved additional investment in the facility as part of a 2019 bond election, which will take the form of replacing barns originally built in the 1980s along with other improvements.
Looking ahead, the city is pushing toward even more synergy between WestWorld and new multiuse sports-fields being built adjacent to the 386-acre complex. The venues create a recreational and events core that makes Scottsdale even more attractive to big international events, small local sports tournaments and everything in between.

Wan Hai Lines donates to HopeKids Arizona
Wan Hai Lines Ltd contributed $125,000 to HopeKids Arizona to support the nonprofit’s mission of providing events for families who
This donation will allow over 1,500 local families the opportunity to attend several activities, including a weekend-long family camp in Payson, an overnight trip to experience the Polar Express, a private suite at Gila River Arena for upcoming concerts and a holiday shop ping extravaganza.
“Our ongoing program of events gives these families hope, something to look forward to rather than dwelling on a calendar full of clinic appointments, hospital stays and needle pokes,” says Andrea Lewis, HopeKids Arizona executive director.
“It is essential for these families to have the opportunity to spend quality time together in a safe and accepting environment where kids that are bald, in a wheelchair, have an oxygen tank or a feeding tube are not stared at but feel like they belong.”
Many families served by HopeKids are impacted financially by the medical bills and miscellaneous economic costs that coincide with caring for a child with a life-threatening illness. They often must endure extra transportation costs, out-of-town treatment, eating out, missed time at work and sometimes one parent even has to quit their job to care for their child. When faced with this type of high-stress environment, planning and allocating funds toward social activities is a necessity that can get pushed aside. Donations from corporate sponsors like Wan Hai Lines make these events possible.
“Wan Hai Lines is known for its philanthropy worldwide, and we want to continue representing that reputation here, in Arizona, where our company is headquartered,” says Tenny Hsieh, president of Wan Hai Lines (USA) Ltd. “Supporting children is a very dear cause to Wan Hai because they are the world’s future. Our company is honored to partner with HopeKids to provide experiences for children that will give them hope for a brighter tomorrow.”

YC’s defies challenges to open new store
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski
The pandemic was tough for restaurants, and Geoff Stanisic can attest to that.
The owner of build-yourown stir-fry concept YC’s Mongolian Grill says he is grateful that the industry has returned to some semblance of normalcy.
“We’re just very grateful,” Stanisic says.
“A lot of establishments didn’t make it out of COVID. We had some minor setbacks, but we circled the wagons and we’re growing again.”
His “minor setback” was the bank ruptcy of the Scottsdale Pavilions location near Salt River Fields. His other restaurants survived Gov. Doug Ducey’s pandemicdictated closure of restaurants and buffet restaurants.
In October, he brought his flavorful bowls back to Scottsdale when he opened a new store at 14850 N. 87th Street, near Raintree Drive and Loop 101.
“People’s dining habits changed,” he says. “In Tempe, there were no students. In Chandler, there were no movie theater patrons. Scottsdale was all entertainment driven. We didn’t know what was going to happen with COVID. Nobody did. We had to shutter those. Now, when we reopened, we’re less reliant on any one type of demographic.
“We have to be able to draw in business
people and residential guests. This location is the perfect fit for all of them. In the last week, I’ve met so many people at the Scottsdale store who said they had driven from Scottsdale all the way to (Gilbert/ Mesa) for our food. I had no idea. I was awestruck by the amount of people who made the trek.”
YC’s Mongolian Grill Scottsdale fea tures the restaurant’s signature small, large and unlimited bowls with flavorful, world-inspired sauces including Calcutta curry, spicy Thai, curry-yaki and spicy black pepper. Guests are encouraged to pack their bowls full of fresh veggies, rice, noodles and sauces to customize their bowl experience. Each bowl is then stir-fried by a YC’s chef on the restaurant’s signature flat-top grill.
“What separates us are our noodles,” Stanisic says.
“You don’t know why you like our lo mein noodles, but we hand steam them. Most places, whether it’s Mongolian barbecue or others, will boil noodles. We steam. It’s much more time consuming and labor intensive.”
The noodles absorb the flavor from the sauce and the grill, while with boiled noodles, it just runs off.
“Our lo mein noodles don’t have the glisten of moisture, but that’s because they’re absorbing all the sauce,” he says. “They’re in that absorbent stage.”
YC’s Mongolian Grill has been a locally
owned and operated Valley staple for more than 30 years, opening its first location in Tempe in 1991. He has already purchased space for his next location: Downtown Phoenix behind The Vig on Fifth Avenue.
“It’s a 1913 home that we’re going to keep historic in the front and we’ll put the kitchen in the back,” he says.
“It’s a new feel for us. It’s more of a neighborhood place. Folks near there, they don’t drive. They walk their dogs, ride their bikes. Kids take their scooters.”
A graduate of Catalina High School in Tucson and the NAU, Stanisic would love to expand throughout the state, but he has bigger priorities.
“I’m still a dad,” he says. “My kids are 14 and 15. My kids need a dad at home, more than they need a restaurant. Plus, opening this restaurant was not easy, especially during this supply-chain era.”

SAGITTARIUS 11/22-12/21

AQUARIUS 1/20-2/18
Your personal life will see some changes, possibly before the end of the year. Business motivates you, but don’t make any rash moves, such as a relocation or change of job. Why?
