o
By Zakkary Brog
S
ince 1947, the Cactus League has welcomed some of the greatest players to ever play baseball to the Valley for Spring Training. Seventy-five years later, the tradition continues. American League MVP and two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani will take the field at Tempe Diablo Stadium for the Los Angeles Angels. National League Cy Young award winner Corbin Burnes will show off his trademark cutter at American Family Fields of Phoenix for the Milwaukee Brewers. National League Rookie of the Year Jonathan India will begin his sophomore major league season at Goodyear Ballpark for the Cincinnati Reds. “The Spring Training experience is like no other,” says Bridget Binsbacher, the Cactus League executive director. “To be able to get that close to professional players and watch your favorite team or your favorite player up close and personal, there’s just nothing else like it. It’s kind of a bucket list item.” That experience draws fans from around the world. According to a study by the L. William
6
Seidman Research Institute at ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business, the 2018 Cactus League season generated $373 million in Arizona’s gross domestic product. The study also found that a total economic impact of $644.2 million. Bars and restaurants benefitted the most from out-oftown visitors, with an estimated expenditure of $122.6 million. The median daily spending per party for out-of-state visitors was $405, with an average four-day stay. “They come for the Spring Training experience,” Binsbacher says. “But, as a result of that, they go to other places throughout Arizona to enjoy different attractions. Whether it’s Tombstone, Sedona or Flagstaff, there are just so many options. It’s an opportunity for people to come and watch baseball and enjoy Arizona. People want to come from other parts of the country and experience a beautiful climate. Fortunately, all 10 of our facilities are outdoor facilities and it’s something they can’t experience back home.” In light of the COVID-19 pan-
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2022
demic, health restrictions are in place. Binsbacher recommends that fans visit the individual facilities’ cactusleague.com pages to check out their policies. “I think you’re going to see some of the protocols carried over from last year, because the environment is still sensitive and we want to make sure that we create a safe fan experience,” she says. “I think we definitely did that successfully last season, and we want to be able to do the same thing this year.” However, Binsbacher is hopeful that parks can operate at full capacity. “After the last couple of years, fans, along with our facilities, have been so flexible and had to deal with unique circumstances,” she says. “So, wouldn’t it be awesome if we could provide full capacity and welcome fans back into our stadiums and allow as many as we can to enjoy Spring Training? I think people, just based on the initial ticket sales, inquiries that we’re getting, the industry, our stakeholders, and our partners, everybody is ready to get back to Spring Training.”

Diamondbacks aim to improve in 2022 By Zakkary Brog
R
ising temperatures and the crack of the bat emanating from Valley ballparks mean the MLB regular season is on the horizon. For the Arizona Diamondbacks, it’s a new beginning with a sense of renewed optimism for the future. Let’s take a look at the roster, position by position, heading into 2022.
Catchers
Carson Kelly Since arriving in December 2018 as part of the Paul Goldschmidt trade with St. Louis, Kelly filled a niche as the main man behind the plate. In 2021, he batted .240 with 13 home runs, and 46 RBIs. With plenty of questions surrounding the club’s pitching, Kelly’s consistency will be key for the Diamondbacks this season. Daulton Varsho Drafted by the Diamondbacks in the second round of the 2017 amateur draft, Varsho debuted during the club’s 2020 season. He appeared in only 37 games, due to the shortened season, in which he batted .188 with three
home runs and 9 RBIs. He took a big leap forward in 2021, batting .246 with 11 home runs and 38 runs batted in in 95 games. Varsho will likely NICK AHMED split time between catcher and outfielder, providing the club with a at second base and third base versatile piece. since his arrival. In 2021, he batted .212 with six home runs and 36 RBIs. His ability to improve at the plate will dictate how much Christian Walker time he sees on the diamond in Since being claimed off waivers 2022. in March 2017 from the Cincinnati Reds, Walker has been Arizona’s starting first baseman. JOSH ROJAS
Third base
Josh Rojas Rojas was acquired as part of the return of the Zack Greinke trade with the Houston Astros in July 2019. The Litchfield Park native made the most of drastically increased playing time in 2021. He batted .264 with 11 home runs and 44 RBIs. He will likely also see plenty of time at second base, shortstop and outfield as the lineup shifts for various reasons.
Outfield
Ketel Marte Acquired via trade with the Seattle Mariners in November 2016, Marte was a solid piece for the club in 2017 and 2018. Since then, he’s been a revelation. In 2019, he finished fourth in National League MVP voting.
In 2021, Marte batted .318 with 14 home runs and 50 RBIs in 90 games. He played second base late last year, but will still likely to helm centerfield as well. Considered by many to be the Diamondbacks’ best player, Marte is vital to the organization moving forward. Marte will likely draw plenty of interest from suitors as the trade deadline approaches. He is still under the D-backs’ control through 2024 on an extremely team-friendly contract. David Peralta David Peralta signed with the Diamondbacks in July 2013. Since his 2014 debut, he’s been a pillar of the team. Peralta has batted .286 overall, won a Silver Slugger award in 2018, and a Gold Glove in 2019. This season is the last year of Peralta’s deal before he hits free agency in
2023. Turning 35 in August, Peralta may be playing his last season for the D-backs. Pavin Smith Smith was drafted by the Diamondbacks as the seventh overall pick of the 2017 amateur draft. He made his MLB debut in 2020, appearing in 12 games for the club. In 2021, he played in 145 games, batting .267 with 11 home runs and 48 RBIs. He has also spent time at first base. Smith will look to continue the upward trend in his young career entering 2022.

In his first two seasons in the Valley, he posted a 6.48 ERA in 2020 and a 4.67 ERA in 2021. If Bumgarner can rebound to anything closely resembling his numbers in the bay, it would be massive for the organization. Zac Gallen The Diamondbacks traded Jazz Chisholm in July 2019 to acquire Zac Gallen. Across 2019, Gallen posted a 2.81 ERA. In 2020, his first full, albeit shortened, season with the Diamondbacks, he posted a 2.75 ERA. He finished ninth in National League Cy Young award voting. However, Gallen had a down year in 2021, posting a 4.30 ERA. Like his teammates, he’s looking to bounce back in a big way in 2022. Merrill Kelly After four seasons with the SK Wyverns of the Korea Baseball Organization, Kelly signed with the Diamondbacks in December 2018. The Arizona native and ASU alum has been a reliable hand, as he even led the club in strikeouts last season. He’ll be tasked with being a trustworthy mid-to-late rotation starter again in 2022. Taylor Widener Widener arrived in the Valley from the New York Yankees as part of a three-team trade in
12
February 2018. Widener has spent time in the starting rotation, but it remains to be seen if that’s where he’ll be staying for the future. Of his 23 appearances in 2021, 13 of them were starts. His role moving forward should become clearer as the season rolls on.
TOREY LOVULLO
Luke Weaver Weaver arrived with Carson Kelly from the St. Louis Cardinals as part of the Paul Goldschmidt trade in December 2018. It’s been a bit of a roller coaster for Weaver as a Diamondback. In 2019, he posted an ERA of 2.94. In 2020, he ended the season with an ERA of 6.58. In 2021, he posted an ERA of 4.25. This season, Weaver will attempt to find the successful consistency that has eluded him.
Bullpen overview
The most notable change this season is who will likely fill the closer role. In December, veteran reliever Mark Melancon signed with the club. The UA alum has been a reliable pitcher since making his debut in 2009. Melancon won the National League Reliever of the Year award in 2015. He’s also been named an all-star four times, with an inclusion just last year for the San Diego Padres. Melancon

Manager
Torey Lovullo Lovullo landed a one-year extension on his contract for the 2022 season. Included is also a club option for 2023. He began his tenure as the club’s manager in 2017 and has posted a winning percentage of .476. The team has one postseason appearance under Lovullo. In 2017, they won the National League Wild Card Game. However, they were swept in the National League Division Series by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

New faces in new places in Cactus League By Zakkary Brog
T
he Atlanta Braves defeated the Houston Astros in six games to claim their first title since 1995 on November 2. While the sun set on the 2021 MLB season, the dawn of the offseason also arrived. With the 2022 MLB season coming up, many players’ careers are entering new chapters. Here are notable offseason transactions related that Cactus League fans should know about.
Arizona Diamondbacks: 2021 record: 52-110 Last year, the D-backs finished with baseball’s worst record and now the club is looking to bounce back by rebuilding around young talent. The organization has three prospects ranked in the top 100 prospects in baseball according to MLB.com: shortstop Jordan Lawlar (13), outfielder Corbin Carroll (20) and outfielder Alek Thomas (40). In October, Chris Devenski elected to enter free agency, but later signed a minor league contract to remain with the organization. Pitchers Zack Burdi
KOLE CALHOUN and Edwin Uceta were claimed off waivers. In November, outfielder Kole Calhoun and pitchers Tyler Clippard and Taylor Clarke also entered free agency. The Diamondbacks traded shortstop Ronny Simon to the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Jordan Luplow. First baseman Leandro Cedeno and shortstop Jeison Guzman were signed to minor league contracts. The club claimed pitcher Kyle Nelson off waivers. In December, the Diamondbacks signed pitcher Mark Melancon. They also signed outfielder Roby Enriquez to a minor league contract.
Chicago Cubs: 2021 record: 71-91 Last year, marked the end of an era for the Cubs. In August, the club traded Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Javier Baez and Craig Kimbrel. With those pillars gone, the Cubs enter 2022 with a new direction: focusing on the future. They have two prospects in MLB.com’s Top 100 rankings: outfielder Brennan Davis (14) and pitcher Brailyn Marquez (86). In October, catcher Austin Romine elected to enter free agency. The club signed outfielder Edward Vargas, pitcher Luis Reyes and shortstop Alejandro ...continues on page 15

The following month, pitchers Zach Davies, Adam Morgan and Jason Adam; catchers Jose Lobaton and Robinson Chirinos, and third baseman Matt Duffy all entered free agency. The Cubs claimed pitcher Wade Miley off waivers. Outfielder Harold Ramirez was acquired via trade for cash. In December, pitcher Marcus Stroman, outfielders Michael Hermosillo and Clint Frazier, and catcher Yan Gomes signed with the Cubs. David Ross’ contract was extended through 2024 with a club option for 2024. The Cubs also signed shortstop Andrelton Simmons and pitcher Jesse Chavez.
Chicago White Sox: 2021 record: 93-69
Second baseman Alsander Womack, second baseman Jagger Roscani, outfielder Ben Norman, pitcher Emilio Vargas and pitcher Cam Hill were signed to minor league contracts. Pitcher Kendall Gravemen also inked a deal. In December, outfielder Leury Garcia signed with the club. In March, the club signed former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly and second baseman Josh Harrison.
Cincinnati Reds: 2021 record: 83-79 After reaching the postseason in 2020 for the first time since 2013, the Reds could not replicate that success in 2021. Joey Votto will return for his 16th season in Cincinnati and attempt to lead the team into postseason contention. The organization has three prospects ranked in MLB.com’s Top 100: pitchers Hunter Greene
While Chicago’s northside saw a season of struggles with the Cubs, the southside saw a season of exhilaration. The White Sox won more than 90 regular season games for the first time since its World Series-winning season in 2005. However, they were eliminated in the ALDS, in four games, by the Houston Astros. In October, the White Sox signed pitcher Tyler Johnson to a minor league contract. Pitchers Ryan Tepera and Carlos Rodon, outfielders Billy Hamilton and Leury Garcia, and second baseman César Hernández COREY SEAGER elected to enter free agency.
(26) and Nick Lodolo (31), and shortstop Matt McLain (90). In October, outfielder Delino Deshields elected to enter free agency. In November, pitchers Mychal Givens, Michael Lorenzen and Brandon Bailey, and outfielder Nick Castellanos became free agents. Catcher Tucker Barnhart was traded to the Detroit Tigers for third baseman Nick Quintana. Pitcher Wade Miley was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs.
Cleveland Guardians: 2021 record: 80-82 It’s a new era in Cleveland baseball. The newly christened Cleveland Guardians enter 2022 after their streak of consecutive seasons with a winning percentage of .500 came to an end in 2021. Pieces of the American League championship team of 2016 continue to depart, but the Guardians do have five players in MLB.com’s top 100 prospects: Infielders Tyler Freeman (59), Gabriel Arias (82) and outfielder George Valera (63), third baseman/outfielder Nolan Jones (68) and pitcher Daniel Espino (92). In November, catchers Wilson Ramos and Roberto Perez, and pitchers Bryan Shaw and Blake Parker became free agents. Pitcher Francisco Perez was claimed off waivers by the Washington Nationals. Outfielder Oscar Gonzalez signed ...continues on page 16

Outfielder Harold Ramirez was sent to the Chicago Cubs for cash. Pitcher J.C. Meija was went to the Milwaukee Brewers in return for a player to be named later. Pitchers Scott Moss and Scott Nelson were claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks, respectively. The club signed catcher Sandy Leon. In March, the team signed catcher Luke Maile.
Colorado Rockies: 2021 record: 74-87 The Rockies began life after Nolan Arenado in 2021, who was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals following the 2020 MLB season. Many expected them to finish near MLB cellar. However, the Rockies finished above nine other clubs. They currently have three prospects in the MLB.com’s Top 100: outfielders Zac Veen (50) and Benny Montgomery (93) and pitcher Ryan Rolison (95). In October, pitcher Jairo Diaz elected to enter free agency. The following month saw shortstops Chris Owings and Trevor Story, and pitchers Jhoulys Chacin and Jon Gray enter free agency. Chacin later re-signed with the club. Pitchers Logan Cozart, Michael Peterson and Breiling Eusebio, and shortstop Max George signed minor league deals. In March, the team signed shortstop Jose Iglesias and
pitcher Alex Colome.
Kansas City Royals: 2021 record: 74-88 The Royals were headed in the right direction in 2021, posting their best winning percentage of the last four seasons. They’re hoping to take another step forward with shortstop Bobby Witt set to take the next step to the big leagues. He ranks as MLB. com’s third overall best prospect. Joining Witt in the MLB.com Top 100 are fellow Royals prospects first baseman Nick Pratto (65), pitcher Asa Lacy (66), and catcher MJ Melendez (67). In October, second baseman Hanser Alberto entered free agency. The Royals acquired pitcher Zach Willeman in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The club also signed pitcher Yohan Baez to a minor league deal. In November, the Royals released first baseman Ryan McBroom and pitcher Kyle Zimmer. Pitchers Ervin Santana, Greg Holland, Wade Davis, Jesse Hahn and Richard Lovelady entered free agency. Lovelady later re-signed a minor league deal. Shortstop Lucius Fox was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles.
Los Angeles Angels: 2021 record: 77-85 The Angels’ 2022 record doesn’t tell the entire story of their season. While they finished an ordinary 77-85, the play of one man on the roster was anything
but average. Shohei Ohtani was crowned American League MVP after his incredible two-way campaign. He finished with 46 home runs at the plate and an ERA of 3.18 on the mound. With Mike Trout returning from injury, the Angels will attempt to clinch a postseason spot for the first time since 2014. They have two players in MLB.com’s Top 100 prospects: pitchers Reid Detmers (23) and Sam Bachman (87). In October, the Angels signed pitcher Victor Morin. In November, outfielders Dexter Fowler and Juan Lagares, and pitchers Dylan Bundy, AJ Ramos, Rasiel Iglasies, Alex Cobb and Steve Cishek, catcher Kurt Suzuki, and second baseman Phil Gosselin entered free agency. The club claimed shortstop Andrew Valazquez off waivers from the New York Yankees. Pitchers Sean McLaughlin, Zack Weiss and Brian Moran, shortstop Jake Gatewood, third baseman Trey Cabbage were signed to minor league contract. The Angels signed pitcher Noah Syndergaard and Michael Lorenzen. In December, the club signed pitcher Raisel Iglesias.
Los Angeles Dodgers: 2021 record: 106-56 The Dodgers entered the 2021 season as the defending World Series champions. There was no post-title slump, as the club managed to win more than 100 games for the third time in ...continues on page 18

The club also signed pitcher Daniel Hudson. In March, pitcher Clayton Kershaw re-signed and second baseman Hanser Alberto signed with the club.
However, the team fell to the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS. The club has two players in MLB.com’s Top 100 prospects: outfielders Garrett Mitchell (51) and Sal Frelick (88). In November, electing free agency were pitchers Colin Rea, John Axford, Hunter Strickland, Deaniel Norris, Brad Boxberger, Brett Anderson and John Curtiss, along with catcher Manny Pina, third baseman Eduardo Escobar, outfielder Avisail Garcia and first baseman Daniel Vogelbach. easily stacks up with others in Major League Baseball. Randy Johnson, Paul Goldschmidt, Brandon Webb, Luis Gonzalez, and Steve Finley have called Chase Field their home. IMPROVEMENT AHEAD The D-backs head into the 2022 season with hopes to improve on their previous campaign. Veterans like David Peralta, Ketel Marte and Nick Ahmed will lead a squad with younger talent such as Daulton Varsho, Josh VanMeter and Pavin Smith.

The scoop on Sloan Park WRIGLEYVILLE WEST Sloan Park is lovingly called “Wrigleyville West” by Cubs fans and locals. This Spring Training facility opened in 2014 and offers a truly unique experience for Chicago Cubs fans. There are many homages to Wrigley Field at Sloan Park, from a replica marquee sign where fans can get their photos taken to the outfield berm that is shaped to resemble the bleachers in Chicago. The roof replicates parts of the Cubs’ home field in Chicago as well. Sloan Park is near the Loops

202 and 101 near Mesa’s Riverview Park. This facility has been respectfully built for the fans and players, so they can feel perfectly at home in the Cactus League. TASTES OF HOME The most unique concession items are the Chicago dog and deep-dish pizza. The Sloan Park marquee is the most distinguishable stadium feature. The most fun tradition is singing “Go Cubs Go” after a Cubs win.

irst-generation college students can struggle transitioning successfully from high school to college, including wading their way through financial aid, according to Elizabeth Paulus. But her Mesa-based organization, College Bound AZ is helping with that through a myriad of programs. Paulus and her husband, Gerald, plant a seed with eighth-grade first-generation students letting them know college is possible and they are going to go. Through College Bound AZ’s program Rise Scholars, the couple gives laptops to the lowest income demographic. They streamline the college application process and take them on college tours. Finally, they provide food boxes on the community college level to address food insecurity. “About 60% of students in the community college system are food insecure,” says Paulus, a Chicago native. “Our food box program helps relieve one of the stressors and burdens of completing their education. They did a study in our state 60% of students are food insecure and 13% are homeless.”
To raise much-needed fund, College Bound AZ is throwing Chicago Fest West, a celebration of all-things Windy City from 2 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Mesa Convention Center.
Featured performers are Bluesman Mike and the Blues Review Band (3 p.m.); Breakdown, Tom Petty tribute (5 p.m.); REO Survivor, REO Speedwagon and Survivor tribute (7 p.m.); and Chicago ...continues on page 29

Rewired, Chicago tribute (8:15 p.m.). The Valley band Palomas perform at 2 p.m. The live music show will kick off with bagpipers performing in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. The day prior, starting at 6 p.m. Friday, March 18, College Bound AZ is hosting Party with a Purpose! an exclusive preparty with legendary Chicago Bears quarterback and Arizona resident Jim McMahon. With a $100 ticket, fans can attend a meet and greet with McMahon and have food and drinks from 6 to 8 p.m. Other activities include “Coleslaw Carey” cornhole, a kid zone, sports memorabilia sales, a VIP lounge and food vendors Party with a Purpose! also will have silent and live auctions, a 50/50 raffle and live music. Carvin Jones and Ocean’s Rat Pack will provide the entertainment. Last year’s fundraiser was held in a pub, so this year the couple decided to take it a step further and turn it into a music festival. “There are a lot of people from Chicago here,” Paulus says. “I thought this could have a lot of momentum. We decided to grow it to the next step, so we’re taking it out of the pub and putting it into a music festival that’s at the Mesa Convention Center. “We need these funds to buy laptop computers or provide scholarships.” The couple founded College
Bound AZ in 2010, after they observed students who were low income were struggling to figure out how they could get into college using the benefits that were designed for them. “It’s just a little more complex than your usual high school assignment,” she says. “So, by virtue of watching them struggle and realizing that number of low-income students, we walk them through some of the steps for their college applications.” Last summer, the Arizona Legislature approved the Arizona Promise Program, which provides scholarships for low-income students to cover tuition and fees at ASU, UA or NAU. “That’s great, great news, right?” she says. “Well, these are kids who have never set
food on that university. Now you’re going to send them fully funded? I love it. But if you’ve never stepped foot on a university campus, oh my gosh, it’s its own little city.” These students are more than intimidated. “So, the need for our program is even more important than it ever was before,” she says. “There’s a bigger population of students with this wonderful potential and a system that’s trying to help them that also is its own barrier in some ways.” Paulus says her job is gratifying and she wants to raise awareness of College Bound AZ. “It’s amazing to watch these students succeed,” she says. “It’s more gratifying than I imagined.”

The scoop on the Brewers THE BREWERS ARE BORN The Brewers began play in 1969 as the Seattle Pilots, before moving to their current home in Milwaukee only one year later. From 1970-2007, the Brewers only reached the postseason twice: an ALDS stop in 1981 and a World Series appearance in 1982. Since then, the club has reached the postseason six times. Despite having the smallest market size in the majors, the fans in Milwaukee always show up in droves on gamedays.

NOTABLE NAMES Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, Rollie Fingers, Ryan Braun, and Prince Fielder are a few of the most notable names in club history. CONTENDING CREW After finishing with 95 wins in 2021, the Brew Crew is aiming to contend for a championship again in 2022. Led by pitchers Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Freddy Peralta, Devin Williams, and Josh Hader, the Brewers are well-equipped to contend in the National League.

The scoop on the Rangers RANGERS ARE BORN The Rangers entered Major League Baseball in 1961 as the Washington Senators, before moving to Texas in 1972. They would get their first taste of the postseason in 1996, and make appearances in the World Series in 2010 and 2011. Their home ballpark in Arlington, Globe Life Field, is the newest ballpark in MLB. It opened in 2020. IMPORTANT TO THE GAME Some of the best names to call themselves a Ranger include

Ivan Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro, Adrian Beltre, and Ian Kinsler. A NEW ERA The Rangers only won 60 games in 2021, but they responded by making big moves in the offseason to rebound. They signed Marcus Semien and Corey Seager to huge deals as a means to kickstart a new era in Arlington, forgoing the traditional multiyear rebuilding blueprint.

T
he baseball experience in Mesa doesn’t end with the final out of Spring Training. The exhibit “Play Ball: The Arizona Spring Training Experience and Cactus League Hall of Fame” runs through January. Mike Phillips of Arizona Baseball Legacy and Experience is excited to give baseball fans this opportunity to learn about baseball. “Our mission, quite simply, is to celebrate Arizona baseball,” Phillips said. “It has a ton of history and heritage here. Many of the communities are tied culturally to baseball.” The exhibit focuses on the league’s history and importance. “There are plaques from most, if not all, of the Cactus League Hall of Fame inductees,” Phillips said. “It’s fun to look through an exhibit and be able to read the stories and see memorabilia from the people that built that Cactus League. There are not only players, but people like Rose Mofford and Jim Bruner, who were Arizona politicians who were instrumental in saving and growing the Cactus League.” Arizona had to fight to keep the Cactus League and build stadiums. Phillips called it “an incredible success story” because half of the MLB teams are in the Valley. “There used to be only six who
were here,” he said. “A couple were threatening to leave, which would’ve killed the Cactus THE FOUNDERS OF THE ARIZONA BASEBALL LEGACY AND EXPERIENCE MIKE PHILLIPS, CHARLIE VASCELLARO AND League back in the STEVE BERG.
