Batter Up!
The crack of Spring Training bats starts March 3
By Curt Blakeney pring Training returns to the Valley on March 3, and optimism abounds for the 15 teams who call the Cactus League home. For baseball fans in Arizona, and the thousands of snowbirds and out-oftowners enjoying the warm weather, a hot dog and a cold beer, there is nothing more enjoyable than an afternoon at the ballpark. Welcome to our Spring Training Guide 2015. In it, readers will find complete Spring Training schedules for games that are played in Arizona, as well as things to do while visitors and residents alike take in the games.

The Chicago White Sox had a productive offseason, adding flame-throwing right-hander Jeff Samardzija, closer Dave Robertson and outfielder Melky Cabrera to the mix. Cuban slugger Jose Abreu is a legit MVP candidate, while pitcher Chris Sale has the stuff to win the Cy Young in 2015. This might be the season the ChiSox make some

noise in the AL Central. The Los Angeles Dodgers, led by Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw, sizzled through the regular season, then fizzled in the playoffs. New president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, who cut his teeth building the Tampa Bay Rays into a contender, is trying to restore a Dodgers clubhouse that was widely regarded as dysfunctional last season. The key to the team’s success is the play of enigmatic outfielder Yasiel Puig and the development of prospect Joc Pederson.

Working with a limited budget, the Cleveland Indians are hoping their methodical approach will finally pay dividends in a wide-open AL Central. They finished only four games out the Wild Card spot, behind a Cy Young performance by pitcher Corey Kluber. The addition of slugger Brandon Moss should bolster the lineup behind Michael Brantley and Carlos Santana. The Cincinnati Reds signed outfielder Marlon Byrd to bolster the offense, after he hit a career-high 25 homers for the Phillies in 2014. But he’s 37, so it’s best fans temper their expectations. Scoring runs shouldn’t be a problem if Joey Votto and Jay Bruce return from injuries. The Reds

dealt pitchers Mat Latos and Alfredo Simon, so the starting rotation has to be rebuilt around ace Johnny Cueto.
M aryval e
Milwaukee Brewers’ outfielder Ryan Braun will be a target for hecklers after testing positive for PEDs, but more importantly, the five-time All-Star outfielder had offseason surgery to heal a nerve issue in his thumb that kept him from properly gripping a bat the last two seasons. Righthander Yovani Gallardo, the opening-day starter for the last five years, was traded to Texas, so the team is looking for a new ace.
M es a
Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein spent big bucks ($155 million over six years) on southpaw Jon Lester, but the Cubs might be too young to compete in the tough NL Central. Youngsters Javier Baez, Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler are super talented, but may need time to mature. New manager Joe Maddon should end a string of losing seasons for the Cubs. Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane went all-in last season, acquiring pitchers Jon Lester, Jason Hammel and Jeff Samardzija in July for a run at an AL crown, but the moves backfired. The A’s went into a late-season swoon and were swiftly booted from the playoffs ...continues on page 65

Peoria Sports Complex by the opportunistic Royals. Beane reshuffled the deck again, bringing in Ike Davis at first, Ben Zobrist at second, Marcus Semien at short, Brett Lawrie at third and Billy Butler at DH.

What’s up with the San Diego Padres? General Manager A.J. Preller acquired a new outfield—Justin Upton, Matt Kemp and Wil Myers in a busy offseason. He then topped it off with the signing of pitcher James Shields to lead the rotation, which also includes promising youngsters Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross. After years of being division doormats, the Padres will make things exciting at Petco Park. One win shy of making the playoffs last year, the freespending Seattle Mariners are optimistic after the additions of Nelson Cruz. The AL’s reigning home run king will bat cleanup, providing protection for Robinson Cano, who hit a measly 14 home runs in 2014. Ace Felix Hernandez leads a promising young staff featuring Taijuan Walker and James Paxton.

The Arizona Diamondbacks look to rebound after a dismal 2014 campaign
cost manager Kirk Gibson and GM Kevin Towers their jobs. Chief baseball officer Tony La Russa and new manager Chip Hale will try to get the team back on track, buoyed by the return of slugger Paul Goldschmidt and the addition of Cuban defector Yasmany Tomas, who inked a whopping $68.5 million contract. The Colorado Rockies still boast two elite players in shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, but both are fragile and can’t be counted on to play a full season. As usual, Colorado is short on talent in the starting rotation, but keep an eye out for young southpaw Jon Gray, who can top 100 MPH on the radar gun. For the San Francisco Giants, the defending World Series champs, bring back postseason hero Madison Bumgarner, as well as the rest of the starting rotation: Matt Cain, Ryan Vogelsong, Tim Lincecum, Tim Hudson and Jake Peavy. Bumgarner is the workhorse, while Cain is trying to recover from elbow surgery, but the rest of the staff is a question mark. The Giants offense took a ding with the departures of Pablo Sandoval and Michael Morse.

The Kansas City Royals were the “cardiac kids” last season, taking the nation on a thrilling and improbable ride right to the World Series. But it’s going to be tough for manager Ned Yost to repeat that magic without ace James Shields, who signed with San Diego in the offseason. Manager Jeff Banister takes over for Ron Washington after the Texas Rangers last-place finish. Right hander Yovani Gallardo slots in nicely behind righty Yu Darvish and southpaw Derek Holland, giving the Rangers a solid trio atop the rotation. Keep an eye out for slugger Prince Fielder, who’s due for a bounceback season after battling injuries last year.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim still cruised to first place in the West behind the play of outfielder Mike Trout, the best player in baseball. If pitcher Garrett Richards and the once-mighty Josh Hamilton can recover from offseason surgeries, and Albert Pujols can duplicate his 28-homer/105-RBI season at age 35, the Angels should again win the West.
