“People ask me what I do in the winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.” ~Rogers Hornsby

A
s the weather turns from warm to warmer, flowers begin blooming and the tourists roll in. It can only mean one thing: Spring Training. That’s right: fried food, the crack of a bat and home runs are back. Spring Training kicks off on February 21, right here in the Valley. New and old faces will return and we’re looking forward to all of them.
Arizona Diamondbacks: 2019 record – 85-77
A few games short of a wild card spot in the 2019 season, the D-backs are looking to return to the playoffs. General Manager Mike Hazen made sure the team would have the players to get there. In October, Hazen signed Stephen Vogt to a one-year, $3 million contract with a vesting option for 2021. In 2019, Vogt was consistent for the San Francisco Giants. At the start of the offseason it wasn’t in the D-backs’ plan to find a replacement for Zack Greinke, but not too long after, priorities shifted and Madison Bumgarner found his place on the Diamondbacks’ roster. The 11-year veteran enters Chase Field as the ace and comes to the team for $85 million. As the offseason continued the D-backs looked to improve the corner outfield spots when they signed Arizona native Kole Calhoun and traded for Starling Marte. Calhoun will add a little bit of lefty power in the outfield and
8
will give the D-backs more flexibility in its lineups. Off the diamond, the D-backs made a coaching staff change, bringing in Matt Herges from the San Francisco Giants.
Chicago Cubs: 2019 record – 84-78
After a less-than-satisfactory season, the Cubs needed to improve their roster if they want to reach the playoffs once again. The Cubs were able to avoid arbitration for the eighth year in a row this offseason. By extending one-year contracts to players like Kris Bryant and Javier Baez, the Cubs are sitting pretty for next offseason. The Cubs were able to hold onto three-time all-star Anthony Rizzo with a $16.5 million deal. Despite avoiding arbitration, the Cubs still took some hits this offseason. They lost ace Cole Hamels, power bat Ben Zobrist and a reliable bullpen arm in Steve Cishek. The team picked up CD Pelham off waivers and traded for Travis Lakins, Casey Sadler and Jharel Cotton.
Chicago White Sox: 2019 record – 72-89
On the other side of the Windy City, Rick Hahn, the Chicago White Sox’s general manager, is rebuilding his team. On Halloween, he traded Welington Castillo to the Rangers to free up space on the roster—and money. Without a catcher, Hahn went straight for the top. He
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
brought in all-star Yasmani Grandal, who inked for $18.25 million. As a backup, Hahn went for Brian McCann, whose role will be to provide leadership to younger players and play behind the plate when needed. On the mound, Hahn signed Dallas Keuchel for $18 million and Steve Cishek for $6 million. Hahn added the power bat of Edwin Encarnacion on a one-year deal for $12 million and extended a deal with Jose Abreu for $17.8 million. The final move this offseason was signing the No. 3 prospect in baseball, Luis Robert, for six years with a $50 million contract.
Cincinnati Reds: 2019 record – 75-87
In Cincinnati, the Reds stepped up their game, landing plays who could make a playoff push in the 2020 season. The Reds started the offseason by signing strong bats. Mike Moustakas signed a $64 million contract, a record for the Reds. Where Moustakas is going to play is still a bit of a question, but for that sum it is sure that he will be a starter. Shortly afterward, they signed the nine-year outfield veteran from Japan, Shogo Akiyama. Over his career, Akiyama has acquired 1,405 hits, 116 home runs and a .301 batting average. In addition, the Reds finished ...continues on page 30

MADISON BUMGARNER
Fresh Faces
Madison Bumgarner, Starling Marte and Kole Calhoun move into the D-backs’ dugout By Haley Smilow and Christina Fuoco-Karasinski
T
he Arizona Diamondbacks are serious about their high expectations for the 2020 season. In the offseason, General Manager Mike Hazen helped the team acquire a number of highcaliber players including Madison Bumgarner, Starling Castro and Kole Calhoun. Let’s take a look at each of the three.
Madison Bumgarner After trading Zack Greinke last season to the Houston Astros at the 11th hour, the Arizona Diamondbacks saved roughly $54 million but still needed a leader. “When we traded Zack away last year, we knew we were missing something at the top of our rotation and we just didn’t put it as something we wanted to regain,” Hazen says. The team found a leader in
12
Madison Bumgarner, who signed with the D-backs for five years, $85 million. Hazen says the 10year Giant was a logical fit. “We would be silly not to pursue it,” Hazen says. “We knew over the next couple of years, finding somebody to anchor our rotation was going to be something we needed. “That’s why pursued Madison.” Bumgarner says it was difficult to leave behind his San Francisco fans, who had been with him for a decade and through three World Series championships. He’s excited to move on through. “I am thrilled to be a Diamondback and I’m just really excited to get started in this process,” he says. Bumgarner took several things into consideration when making his decision to sign with the D-backs.
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
“First off they’ve got a really good team and a lot of young guys who are coming up,” Bumgarner says. “I think they are headed in a really good direction and they play hard. I would say they have a bunch of grinders on this team—guys who don’t take any pitch off and they are a hard nose group of guys. They also play what in my mind is my brand of baseball. The play the way I like to play.” His decision was also based on the team’s location. “I’ve got to spend a lot of time here and it’s a beautiful place,” Bumgarner says. “A ton of people want to come here and move to the area, but to me, it just feels like where I am supposed to be. Because I’ve played out here for so long, I have lots of friends out here. It’s truly like home to me.” Bumgarner has friends in Stephen Vogt and Matt Herges, his former catcher and pitching coach, respectively. Vogt signed a one-year contract in November with the D-backs. Herges was hired on October 31 by the Dbacks as their pitching coach. ...continues on page 14

“I’m excited to have those guys here,” he says. “Vogt is awesome. He is one of the best teammates I’ve ever had, and I was only with him for a year. Herges is going to be a really, really good pitching coach. I’m excited about it.” Bumgarner will serve in a capacity beyond pitching—role model for younger pitchers. Bumgarner and Hazen aren’t the only ones excited about the start of the 2020 season. Manager Torey Lovullo had kind words to say about Bumgarner. “He speaks for himself,” Lovullo says. “He has an incredible track record. He has won world championships and he is able to get himself out there every fifth day. This is something we are looking forward to and I know the 25 guys who are going to be playing around him are excited. Coming to the ballpark that day, I’ll be looking forward to watching him go to work. I’m thrilled he is here and it is an honor to be sitting up here with him. I’m glad we are here together.”
Starling Marte On January 27, the Diamondbacks and Pittsburgh Pirates agreed on a trade deal, sending Starling Marte to a starting center field position in Phoenix and pitcher Brennan Malone along with shortstop Liover Peguero to the Pirates’ minor league system. Marte, 31, is entering his ninth year of professional baseball. Over his career, he has 108 homers, 420 RBIs, 239 steals and a .287 batting average. Last season he had a career-high in both home runs (23) and RBIs (82). His hitting isn’t his only talent, as in 2015 and 2016 Marte won the Gold Glove award. “He is a fantastic baseball player,” Hazen says. “He has power, he can hit for average and he is
14
MADISON BUMGARNER a very good athlete. He plays a great center field and he fits a lot of what we are trying to do.” The deal was on and off the table all offseason and Hazen explains how the deal was settled. “Things change and things changed,” he says vaguely. “We sort of picked up the contract again for whatever reason. We were working on things and the Pirates were working on things, but it just came back around, and we started to connect on a few things. At this point, we were able to get the deal done.” Hazen has a lot of confidence in the team he put together this offseason. “The Dodgers are a team that has earned its place historically in the last five years at the top of the division,” he says. “I said this when we signed Madison: I don’t think one player is going to tip the scales, themselves considering the gap at the end of the 2019 season. The Dodgers are still an incredibly strong team, but I feel like we are stronger. The trade’s completion also helped the team when it came to the infield. With the deal in
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
place, Ketel Marte, who ended last season with an injury, will be able to slide into the permanent role of second baseman. Hazen feels this will allow the team to have more depth and a stronger alignment. “He was exceptional for us in center field last year, but we feel like he and Nick were an exceptional defensive pair in 2018,” Hazen says. “If we were able to find a way to get him out of center field, which we felt like was the much more challenging task this offseason, we would be better aligned. We also feel like he is a Gold Glove second baseman. Either way, we were willing to go with it, this is just the alignment we preferred.” Starling Marte is happy to know where is going to play. “I am feeling really good especially because now the uncertainty of not knowing where I was going to be is over,” he says. “I am happy to be with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and I am ready to get going. I am just focusing on being a

part of the team, getting along with my teammates and putting my best foot forward on the Diamondbacks.”
Kole Calhoun Buckeye Union High School graduate Kole Calhoun called signing a two-year deal with the D-backs “a dream come true.” The terms of the contract were not disclosed. “I was born and raised here, so I grew up a Diamondbacks fan,” Calhoun says. “As a kid, I always dreamed of playing for the Diamondbacks and now I have the opportunity and I couldn’t be more excited.” His former team, the Los Angeles Angels, bought out for $1 million the $14 million option on Calhoun’s contract. “When the Angels decided to decline my option, (the D-backs) were calling,” he says. “I think just for me, personally, I wanted to be on a team who wanted me. Having the phone call the very first day and for the Diamondbacks to be so engaging, it was something I wanted.” Calhoun, 32, ranks third among all AL outfielders since 2014 in RBI (416) and total bases (1,406), trailing Mike Trout/LAA (533 RBI/1,758 TB) and Mookie Betts/BOS (455 RBI/1,616 TB) respectively. Additionally, Calhoun is fourth during this span with 132 home runs, behind Trout (217), George Springer/HOU (149) and Betts (137), and 821 hits, which are fewer than only Betts (935), Trout (881) and Brett Gardner/NYY (834). Defensively, the former Arizona State Sun Devil (2009-10), is a four-time American League Rawlings Gold Glove Award finalist in right field (2015, 2017-2019), including winning the top fielding award in 2015. In the last five
16
KOLE CALHOUN years (2015-19), Calhoun leads all right fielders with 6,478 innings and 45 assists. A 2006 Buckeye Union High School graduate, Calhoun will become the sixth D-backs to play baseball in high school, college (four-year university) and the Major Leagues in Arizona (also: Jake Barrett, Tuffy Gosewisch, Merrill Kelly, Cody Ransom and Ed Vosberg), and eighth Sun Devil to don a D-backs’ jersey (also: Willie Bloomquist, Jake Elmore, Mike Leake, Deven Marrero, Barrett, Gosewisch and Kelly). Calhoun was teammates with current D-backs pitcher Merrill Kelly at Yavapai College and ASU. A Tempe resident, Calhoun set career-highs in 2019 with the Angels in home runs (33), slugging pct. (.467), OPS (.792), extra-base hits (63) and runs scored (92). Calhoun remembers watching the 2001 World Series between the Diamondbacks and the Yankees on television. Having the opportunity to play in Chase Field is exciting. “It’s something that’s very, very special for me,” Calhoun says. “Getting to wear this uniform and representing the Diamondbacks is something I’m definitely looking forward to. I really can’t
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
wait to get started.” Calhoun admitted the recent signing of Bumgarner further encouraged him to ink with the D-backs. “This was another big factor for me,” he says. “As I was getting further along in my career, I wanted to go to a team really looking to win. This team has really made a splash with a free-agent arm. It’s really exciting and all of these factors come into play.” Playing for the D-backs fits his mold as a player, Calhoun adds. “I’m going out and play really hard,” he says. “I leave it all out there on the field. I’m looking forward to fine-tuning going into next season. Honestly, I’m going to come to the ballpark ready to compete. “I know I’m definitely getting older—I mean age is not really on my side and I know that—but recovery has become something very vital to me.” He’s thrilled, though, to join the likes of David Peralta, Bumgarner and Robbie Ray. “We have a great group of guys,” he says. “The pieces they’ve added since last season, along with the core group of guys who are there, I’m just really excited about it.”

Cactus League brings more than $300M in economic impact to the Valley By Christopher Boan
A
springtime rite of passage for baseball fans returns to the Valley in late February, with the dawning of the 2020 Cactus League. The 15-team league, which runs through the end of March, brings Major League Baseball competition to 10 fields in the region. The games technically don’t count in the year-end standings, but make a huge impact on the state’s economy, according to ASU’s Daniel Marburger. Marburger, who as a clinical professor in the W.P. Carey School of Business, said the league has a unique impact unlike any other sporting event in the region. “It’s a little bit different than trying to estimate the economic impact of, let’s say, the
18
Super Bowl, which is people coming in from the outside to go to the game, they spend some money here for the weekend and then they go back, because with the Cactus League, you have people who are retirees, snowbirds, who have chosen Arizona, chosen Phoenix, because it’s where the Cubs play,” Marburger says. “Maybe they would have retired in Florida, or maybe they’d be snowbirds in Florida if the Cubs were playing in Florida. “So, it’s not just visitors who came up for an event and then went home, or even a better example would be let’s say the Arizona Cardinals. Well, most people who go to a Cardinals game, live in Phoenix, Phoenix area, and therefore you really don’t count them, because they’re not coming in from
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
the outside. But when you have permanent residents or semi-permanent residents who have actually chosen Phoenix because of Cactus League baseball.” The research done by Marburger and his colleagues at the W.P. Carey School of Business backs up his point. The college’s 2018 study found the Cactus League brought in $315.7 million in economic impact, with $122.6 million being spent on bars and restaurants, while $89.8 million was spent on lodging and accommodations. What stands out for Cactus League Baseball Association Executive Director Bridget Binsbacher is the impact the exhibition has on the communities hosting the league’s 10 stadiums. “I’ve been focusing on really trying to understand the different models existing in all of our spring training cities,” Binsbacher says. “They’re all different and their impact on the community, their relationship with the community, with the team, they’re all unique to

one another.” The league, which was founded in 1947, has entrenched itself in Grand Canyon State sporting lore, with generations of fans flocking to the venues each year. ASU’s economic impact study found the league drew 1,737,975 fans for the 2019 season, across 220 games, averaging out at 7,900 people per contest. Leading the way in 2019, in terms of attendance, were the Chicago Cubs, who drew 13,939 fans per game, a .4% increase over 2018. The Arizona Diamondbacks (10,628) and Los Angeles Dodgers (10,326) were the other franchises to draw more than 10,000 fans per game in 2019. The San Diego Padres saw the largest year-over-year increase, in terms of per-game attendance, gaining 12%, to 6,704 fans per contest. The league’s ability to draw in fans from across the country year after year is important for a number of reasons, according to Binsbacher. Mainly, attendance is vital, as the league is a nonprofit organization useing its proceeds to fund a number of causes, such as scholarships for local teenagers. Binsbacher believes the league can gain on its altruistic roots, serving the region off the field while entertaining the masses with top-notch action on the diamond. “As a result of volunteer work and the various relationships we’ve built, we generate more than $2.6 million in funding,” Binsbacher says. “Whether it’s scholarships or grants or different funding for various programs, mostly youth-based in various communities.
20
“So, it’s just another impact we weren’t talking about before that we’re really starting to look at how we can measure and really continue to focus and grow.” Above all, the Cactus League serves as a month-long advertisement for the state and its way of life, according to Marburger. “You’ve got a bunch of teams, and if you’re loyal to one of those teams and you’re from someplace else and you come here for a vacation or come here as a snowbird or a retiree,” Marburger says. “Now these are people who are permanent or semipermanent residents who were influenced by the Cactus League.” This draw isn’t lost on Binsbacher, who cited the state’s unique position as one of two states, along with Florida, hosting Spring Training games, as an economic tour de force. “We’re so fortunate to have this league here,” Binsbacher says. “There are two states in the entire country hosting these types of games and Arizona is one of them. And we do an amazing job at it and it has a tremendous impact on the state as a whole. “It’s a tremendous opportunity and we really have to take care of it and understand what it means to our economy, to our communities, to our local businesses.” Marburger saw this impact first-hand, watching the league bloom from its more austere roots to an economic powerhouse which continues to grow with each passing year. The ASU economic professor remembers when he was a Ph.D. student in Tempe during the late-1980s, when he could walk to see the Cubs play at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa. Now, the Cubs have their
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
own palatial complex, Sloan Park, which was built in 2014 for $99 million, with a leaguehigh capacity of 15,000. Such a move highlights the exponential growth in popularity of Cactus League games and the continued draw of flocking to the ballparks within the Valley each spring, Marburger believes. “Back then, it was close enough to where I lived, I could actually just walk to the games, and sometimes I did,” Marburger says. “And now they’ve got the entire complex at Mesa. So, there was a recognition the Cubs, in particular, have such a big following, and a lot of Chicagoans like coming to Arizona to escape winter, so they put the two together.” Marburger believes the league’s longevity has helped bake baseball into the bloodlines of local residents, as we’ve grown accustomed to seeing the best players in the world play in intimate venues throughout the region for decades. Such a feat illustrates the unique relationship the Cactus League has within the state’s sports landscape, with unmatched quality and intimacy. “I remember, when I was in graduate school, driving up Scottsdale Road one day, and there were the (San Francisco) Giants doing some warmups, and I thought, ‘This is interesting I’m living in a place where you can just drive up the street and there’s a professional baseball team outside and they’re not drawing a big crowd,’” Marburger recalls. “It wasn’t like people were like, ‘Oh my gosh, look at the San Francisco Giants.’ We took it for granted, yeah, we had baseball here.”

VIDA BLUE
Vida Blue set for Cactus League Hall of Fame induction By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski

ida Blue wasn’t aware of a Cactus League Hall of Fame, but he sees his forthcoming induction as an honor. Blue will be inducted along with former MLB commissioner Bud Selig; retired Dodgers announcer Vin Scully; Hall of Fame outfielder Billy Williams; the late Tony Gwynn, formerly of the San Diego Padres; and retired Peoria Sports Complex groundskeeper Al Siebert. “I thought, ‘What the hell is the Cactus League Hall

of Fame?’” he says with a laugh. “I didn’t know there was such a thing, but it’s cool to go in with Bud Selig and Vin Scully. I know Billy Williams. I faced Tony Gwynn plenty of times. “I still don’t know what the heck I did to be inducted, but I welcome it with open arms. The next time I’m in Arizona, if I need a window table at a restaurant, I’m going to say, ‘I’m a Cactus League Hall of Famer.’” Fans are invited to attend the

W. Camelback Road, Phoenix. The luncheon will feature the induction of the 2020 Cactus League Hall of Fame class (some inductees may not be present). “The Cactus League luncheon celebrates the opening of Spring Training, the best time of year in Arizona,” says Cactus League President Jeff Meyer. Blue was a left-handed pitcher between 1969 and 1986, most notably as an integral member of the Oakland Athletics dynasty who won three World Series championships between 1972 and 1974. Blue visits Arizona often as his girlfriend manages a Marriott and he’s an avid golfer. “This doesn’t mean I play well,” he says with a laugh. He enjoyed his time training in Arizona when he was with the Oakland A’s and the San Francisco Giants. When he was pitching for the Kansas City Royals, he traveled to Florida. “The humidity kicked my butt,” he says. “I enjoyed training in Arizona. I could deal with the elements. The temperature in the morning is cool. It’s pretty warm in the middle of the day. Usually, by mid-March, I got the heck out of there.
“As a player, I think we need all the reps and innings you can pitch to get yourself ready for opening day. If I could do something different, I would put a little extra into my training regimen. That was then, this is now.”

VIDA BLUE “As a player, I think we need all the reps and innings you can pitch to get yourself ready for opening day. If I could do something different, I would put a little extra into my training regimen. That was then, this is now.” The 70-year-old former athlete works as a community ambassador for the Giants. He grits his teeth when asked about the D-backs signing former Giants player Madison Bumgarner. “He’s a diehard San Francisco Giant to the core,” Blue says about Bumgarner. “He’d bleed orange if you cut his head. But it’s strictly business. I wish him the best. I think he has a little left in his tank. “Those D-backs—you better

watch out for them. Normally, you’d say the Dodgers or whomever. The D-backs might be stating their case by that (signing Bumgarner). They’re serious.” He’s a longtime fan of Bob Brenly, the D-backs’ TV color analyst. “He’s a piece of work, man,” he says with a laugh. “He has the gift of gab and it’s what it takes to be a sports commentator. He has all the good stories.” Two days after the luncheon, the 2020 Cactus League season begins on Friday, February 21, and runs until Tuesday, March 24, with 15 MLB teams at 10 ballparks across Maricopa County. ARCHIE BRADLEY
’Nothing Separates Us’
Archie Bradley tears down the wall between him and the fans By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski
A
rizona Diamondbacks pitcher Archie Bradley doesn’t like this assumed barrier between fans and celebrities. “The Beard,” as he’s called, would rather mingle. To give fans the chance to meet him, teammates and other athletes and celebrities, Bradley is hosting ArchiePalooza 2.0 on Sunday, March 15, in the courtyard of Arizona Boardwalk, formerly known as OdySea in the Desert. “I understand I’m a pro athlete, but anyone should be able to talk to me and shake my hand,” Bradley says. “I want to be accessible. Nothing separates us. I understand the platform I have. “I’m in a position where I have the ability to give back. I realize how blessed I am, and how fortunate and lucky I am.” Partial proceeds from Archi-
26
ePalooza go to the OdySea Aquarium Foundation to help kids visit on fieldtrips. The other half will be saved for “activations” throughout the year, he says. “We really try to spread the love,” Bradley says. “Kids are important to me. I want to be a dad one day. We have the ability to improve lives just a little.” The event is a “street carnival,” with Bradley’s favorite games and visits by athletes and celebrities who are in town for Spring Training. In honor of the first ArchiePalooza at LumberJaxes, the competitions will include axe throwing, archery, putt-putt, pop-shot and cornhole. Kids are admitted free. “Last year’s ArchiePalooza was a great start; an unbelievable event,” he says. “To be able to roll it back to 2.0 is humbling. It’s exciting to give back.”
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
Often met by chants of “Arch-ie” when he steps on the mound as a reliever, Bradley is aware of the effect he has on the Valley. “It’s flattering,” he says. “I consider myself very lucky and blessed. My parents helped me grow into the person I am today. This state helped me grow into the person I am today. I came to this state at 22 years old. I was drafted at 18. I’m talking to you at 27. For almost 10 years, I’ve been a Diamondback. This city, this state, this team contributed in helping me grow up.”

oodyear Ballpark, the Cactus League home of the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians, opened its gates January 9, for fans to purchase Spring Training tickets, tour the facility and taste new culinary treats. Fans of the teams and spring baseball lined up before the 4 p.m. opening to purchase tickets early, view the new upgrades to the park and try new game-day food options soon to be offered. Among the new options offered by Professional Sports Catering are loaded corn dogs with cheese and bacon, garlic parmesan waffle fries, a Desert Chicken Tender Sandwich and the Cheesy Changeup (a half-pound cheeseburger with grilled cheese sandwiches as buns). Another addition is the
28
nacho helmet—64 ounces of chips, cheese, salsa, jalapenos and other fixings stuffed into a replica logo-laden helmet. “It’s so much food,” says Carson May, a young Indians fan who is excited to cheer on his favorite player, shortstop Francisco Lindor. “Yeah, I don’t think you could eat all that,” remarks his father, Tim May. There is also a new loaded hamburger, the subject of a name-the-burger contest. “It’s spicy so I’m thinking maybe there’ll be something related. But, that’s the fun part, is the fans engage and someone will have their idea of a name on it all season,” says Bruce Kessman, the ballpark’s general manager. Besides food and drinks, there are other new additions to the stadium. Among them
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
are new padding on the home run fences, providing a cleaner look and better protection for the players, and a concrete slab on the first baseline and improves visibility. And the star improvement of the 2020 season - the new video board behind left field fence. It will broadcast game updates and other content in high definition on a considerably bigger screen than in years past. “As far as in-game production there are more options,” Kessman says. “You can have more stats, bring more of the elements of the game into the stadium, and then it’s good for our sponsors to have their business up there clearly, too. “It’s always exciting to kick off the start of Major League Baseball, and we can’t wait to get started.” The Reds and Indians face off on February 22 to open the teams’ Cactus League seasons. out their rotation by adding former D-backs pitcher Wade Miley. He agreed to a two-year, $15 million contract, and is getting the call for the final spot in the Reds rotation. In the offseason, the Reds traded for Jose De Leon, Justin Shafer and Travis Jankowski, and picked up Nick Martini and Freddy Galvis off waivers.
Cleveland Indians: 2019 record – 93-69
In northern Ohio, the Indians are trying a new formula to return to the World Series. After losing Jason Kipnis and Corey Kluber to injuries at the end of last season, the Tribe did away with them. Kluber was shipped off to Dallas, and Cleveland welcomed relief pitcher Emmanuel Clase and the speedy outfielder Delino DeShields. Replacing Kipnis is former Phillies second baseman, Cesar Hernandez. Entering his eighth season of professional baseball, he landed a $6.25 million deal. The Tribe acquired catcher
30
Sandy Leon through a trade with the Boston Red Sox for Adenys Bautista.
Colorado Rockies: 2019 record – 71-91
After a bit of a rocky 2019 season, the Rockies will be looking to close the gap in NL West. The team was quiet this offseason, but MLB veteran Yonder Alonso left the team. The Rockies also picked up a couple of minor league arms. The biggest signing the Rockies made this offseason was extending a deal with the right-handed reliever Scott Oberg. The deal will see Oberg on the Rockies for three more years for $13 million and it avoids arbitration. The Rockies may have made a risky move in signing ex-Rays player Jose Mujica, who sat out last season due to Tommy John surgery.
Kansas City Royals: 2019 record – 59-103
After back-to-back 100-plus losing seasons, things aren’t looking too good for Kansas City. Rather than trying to re-
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
build the team, the Royals are taking it one step at a time. In early December, the Royals resigned right-hander Jesse Hahn for $600,000. They also inked lefty specialist Mike Montgomery for $3.1 million to maintain the bullpen. The Royals added Maikel Franco, formerly of the Phillies, to the roster for $2.95 million for two years to improve the infield.
Los Angeles Angels: 2019 record – 72-90
After losing 90 games for the first time in 20 years last season, the Angels needed a new approach. However, they went in the opposite direction. In December, they splashed the cash once again and signed Anthony Rendon to seven years for $245 million. General Manager Billy Eppler and Coach Joe Maddon say Rendon is an important addition to the lineup. He’ll add power that was frankly missing in the hot corner last season. To fill a void in the rotation, the Angels signed two-time all...continues on page 58

The scoop on Sloan Park • Sloan Park is lovingly called “Wrigleyville West” by Cubs fans and locals. This Spring Training facility opened in 2014 and offers a truly unique experience for Chicago Cubs fans. There are many homages to Wrigley Field at Sloan Park, from a replica marquee sign where fans can get their photos taken to the outfield berm that is shaped to resemble the bleachers in Chicago. The roof replicates parts of the Cubs’ home field in Chicago as well. Sloan Park is near the Loops 202 and 101 near Mesa’s Riverview Park. This facility
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
has been respectfully built for the fans and players, so they can feel perfectly at home in the Cactus League. • The most unique concession items are the Chicago dog and Giordano’s deep-dish pizza. • The Sloan Park marquee is the most distinguishable stadium feature. • The most fun tradition is singing “Go Cubs Go” after a Cubs win.

The Windy Desert
Chicago specialties in the Valley for Spring Training fans to enjoy By Taylor O’Connor
A
s Spring Training season approaches, many Chicago residents will flock to Arizona to appreciate baseball and the sunshine. Heck! Minus the cold weather, it will almost feel like being back home in Chicago with all of the restaurants. You betcha with all these Midwesterners, Chicagoans specifically, coming to the desert for its palm trees and year-round warmth, they are bringing their tasty deep-dish pizza and Italian beef sandwiches with them. Here are five Chicago influenced, or Chicago original, restaurants in the Phoenix area to enjoy.

In 1971, the first Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria opened in Chicago and in 2016 it debuted out of state in Arizona for pizza lovers. Arizona has three Lou Malnati’s within the Valley. These are five out of many other Chicago restaurants in the Phoenix area. Oh jeez, with all these options it will be so darn hard to pick, but you betcha Spring Training season can bring good food and familiar places even so far away from home.

What’s new at Surprise Stadium • The Double Dog Dare You is a foot-long bun with two 11-inch monster hot dogs, bacon, chili, nacho cheese and shredded cheese, diced onions, jalapenos and tortilla strips. In their home fields in Texas and Kansas City, the teams are big on food challenges. “This was one of the ways in which we could bring something over from the team’s home fields,” says Joe Bertoletti, Surprise’s senior associate director of sports and tourism. • Chick-fil-A moved into the stadium. Besides selling food, it is hosting Residents Night so those who live in Surprise, Sun City, El Mirage and Waddell can get discount tickets for select nights.
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
• Homemade puffy tacos are made in Surprise, along with the fixings. • Additional retail locations in the stadium will sell merchandise made by 47, Nike and Majestic. • The 20-foot Huss Brewing Company Container Bar is along the first base concourse. Although it’s branded by Huss, it’ll serve other state and domestic beers. The Huss Backyard will feature yard games and picnic tables. • On select days, the family fourpack will be available. For $44, families can purchase four hot dogs, tickets, sodas and popcorn. • Sunday is Military Appreciation Day with a presentation of colors by Luke Air Force Base.

The ballpark’s 7,000 seats, plus lush outfield berm, assure an intimate baseball experience in a fan-friendly, relaxed setting. PARKING Parking, $5, is aplenty, thanks to the renovation project. star Julio Teheran and traded for Dylan Bundy, the latter of which cost the Halos four minor league pitchers. They also dealt for Parker Markel of the Pirates and Matt Andriese of the D-backs. With new pitchers, the Angels found a permeant catcher in Jason Castro, who signed a one-year, $6.85 million deal. Castro was at a career-high last season with 13 home runs and 30 RBIs last season. Off the diamond, the Halos extended Maddon’s contract by three years.
Los Angeles Dodgers: 2019 record – 106-56
About 40 minutes north, the Dodgers tore through the 2019 season, but, in the end, they still couldn’t find a World Series ring. The Dodgers kept the core of the team in the offseason. After a rough season last year, the Dodgers still had faith in Blake Treinen, whom they signed to a one-year,

$10 million deal this offseason. In addition to Treinen, they signed Jimmy Nelson to strengthen their bullpen for $1.25 million. In good news, Kenley Jansen decided not to opt-out of his contract, which leaves him as yet another man for the Dodgers bullpen.
Milwaukee Brewers: 2019 record – 89-73
After making it to the 2019 wild card game, the Brewers are looking to return. The team added many players to help them reach the playoffs, but they lost players, too— namely Yasmani Grandal and power-hitting infielder Mike Moustakas. To replace Moustakas, the Brewers signed MLB veteran Jedd Gyorko, who can play nearly any position in the infield except for shortstop. Eric Sogard and Justin Smoak signed one-year deals with options for a second season. The Brew Crew also inked Ryon Healy, but there is a chance he will end up in the minor leagues. To give Ryan Braun more time at first base,
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
the Brewers added Avisail Garcia for two years. They improved their bullpen as the signed Brett Anderson and Josh Lindblom, the latter of whom played in South Korea for the last five seasons. He earned the equivalent of that country’s Cy Young and the MVP in 2019.
Oakland Athletics: 2019 record – 97-65
After a great showing in 2019, the Athletics strengthened their core to return to the playoffs. The A’s had one goal in the offseason—acquire lefties. It didn’t matter whether they were a lefty hitter or a lefty pitcher, the team leans right-handed. They acquired Tony Kemp for Alfonso Rivas. They also traded away Jurickson Profar for Austin Allen, a left-handed catcher. Former D-backs pitcher T.J. McFarland was grabbed from waivers, and Jake Diekman was signed to a two-year, $7.5 million contract. ...continues on page 139

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS Scottsdale Stadium 7408 E. Osborn Road, Scottsdale 480.312.2586 scottsdaleaz.gov/stadium sfgiants.com DESCRIPTION The Giants are always among the hottest tickets in town. With its downtown location, Scottsdale Stadium is crammed with pre- and post-game activity options. Make sure to secure tickets before heading down to the game; scalpers typically get top dollar, especially on weekends. PARKING The team encourages drivers to arrive early because the lots fill quickly. Some parking areas have a three-hour limit, but there are shuttles from the stadium to parking. Disabled parking is located in the city court parking lot and the civil venter parking structure. TICKETS Tickets start at $35, available at sfgiants.com; 480.312.2580. BEST PLACE TO SIT Spring the extra money for assigned seating in the lower section. Bleacher seating is brutal, especially during afternoon games – it’s squished and hot. Between bleacher and lawn, we’d choose lawn. CONCESSIONS Staff says the “fancy food” is in the outfield— barbecue, garlic fries, beer and soda.

INNINGS FESTIVAL FUN
DR. DOG
Let There Be Rock Innings Festival returns to Tempe for baseball-centric fun By Christopher Boan
A
lineup of baseball and rock music descends upon Tempe Town Lake in late February for the third iteration of Innings Festival. Slated for Saturday, February 29, and Sunday, March 1, Innings Festival features acts like Dave Matthews Band, Weezer, Portugal. The Man, Death Cab for Cutie, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. Atlanta-based festival director Tim Sweetwood long envisioned an event combining the hoopla of the Cactus League with the glitz and glamor of a music festival. Sweetwood and C3 Presents set out to create the festival several years ago, assembling a roster of players and bands to take the stage at the first event in 2018. Fast-forward three years and Sweetwood believes the festival became a mainstay, for Arizonans and baseball nuts. “We have a really good round of artists coming in, led by Dave Matthews and Weezer, to go with having even more player involvement than

PORTUGAL. THE MAN
we’ve had before, “Sweetwood says. “So, it kind of brings together the full vision of the festival.” An avid baseball fan, Sweetwood says his team was surprised by the enthusiasm for Spring Training in Arizona. This love inspired Sweetwood and his team to create a unique festival incorporating the best elements of both pastimes. The result is a convergence of the two, with batting cages and a virtual home run derby interwoven into the stages and incredible voltage such festivals require.
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
“I realized how many hundreds of thousands of people come to town to watch this, and I thought one of the things missing was entertainment,” Sweetwood says. “So, it’s kind of where the vision for the event came from, was, let’s give those fans coming to town some entertainment to go along with (Spring Training) and then local residents can come as well.” Inning Fest is unlike other large music events as sets do not overlap. Bands take the stage at different times. Such a feat allows festivalgoers to take in all the musicians,
without having to worry about splitting time between stages. Sweetwood also gives fans the chance to meet athletes such as former San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy and Hall of Famers like Trevor Hoffman and Jim Thome. Former D-backs Luis Gonzalez and Miguel Montero will also take part. “If you’re a baseball fan, there’s a possibility to touch these legends of baseball. And from a musical standpoint, we’re not forcing someone to buy a ticket to the whole weekend,” Sweetwood says. A dream comes true One such act taking the stage in Tempe is Philadelphia-based quintet, Dr. Dog. Drummer Eric Slick is stoked to play Innings Fest, given his lifelong love of the Philadelphia Phillies. Slick is looking forward to shooting the breeze with former Phillies pitcher Ryan Dempster, who will be in attendance, in addition to former Philadelphia mainstays, like Aaron Rowand and Thome. Slick says various members of Dr. Dog have made attending Phillies Spring Training games in Florida an annual pastime. Such dedication to the sport gives the band added reason to jump at the opportunity to play in Tempe, as they’ll be able to rub elbows with some of the game’s greatest players. “We’re all such big baseball fans,” Slick says. “We’ve actually written a song for the Phillie Phanatic. So, it’s going to be fun.” Slick, whose favorite baseball player is former Phillies first baseman John Kruk, is excited to add to the short but storied history of Innings Fest. Slick believes the band, who is on the road in support of its

2018 album, “Critical Equation,” will be in fine form by Innings Fest. “It’ll be our last show of the tour and it will be a well-oiled machine by that point,” Slick says. “And the song choices for this tour are going to be really weird and different. And so, anybody who’s seen a Dr. Dog show, it’s going to be a handful of songs that they haven’t heard in a really long time, and it’s going to be a blast.” Hitting their stride The excitement Slick has is shared by Sweetwood and his team, given the stacked lineup of acts and players on this year’s lineup. Sweetwood says organizers try to choose artists who love baseball. One such example is Isbell, who is a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan, adding an extra element to the band’s set. “We try to see if they’re really into baseball, because if they are, then we can get them involved in different contests or competitions that are going on,” Sweetwood says. “So, that’s just an added feature of what’s going on.” Sweetwood says this year’s fest, as in years’ past, will only feature retired MLB

players, given the time constraints and restrictions that current players face. He hopes the who’s-who cast of retired players will motivate interested patrons, given the month-long ode to baseball that is the 15-team Cactus League. Above all, the greatest highlight for Sweetwood is watching festivalgoers flock to the lakeside stages, savoring the work that his team has put forth. Sweetwood is excited to see how the third installment of Innings Fest compares to previous iterations. The reaction to previous years has been incredible, according to Sweetwood, giving him a sense of hope that this year’s event will live up to billing. “You never know what the outcome’s going to be, or if people will really like it when, but this is one where people have taken to it and they’ve really liked it,” Sweetwood says. “And all of our offerings and different ticket types and experiences have definitely helped. “I think that’s been our nicest pleasure-point and enjoyment, is that people are very receptive to the programming and to what we’re putting together.”

Carefree & Cave Creek
Cave Creek Museum By Sara Edwards
T
he Cave Creek Museum continues to preserve artifacts and history of Cave Creek and Carefree since 1970. But before the southwestern-style building became the home to Cave Creek’s past, it was a historical society started in 1968, by small groups of volunteers. The museum sits at the base of Black Mountain in Cave Creek, with collections and exhibits about the town’s architecture and historical artifacts like old ranching equipment, farming tools and clay pots. In honor of its 50 years of preserving Cave Creek and Carefree’s history, the museum is hosting special exhibits and activities. “We’re having a birthday party for the museum,” says Karrie Porter Brace, the museum’s executive director. “Our birthday party now coincides with a national
102
museum celebration day so it makes our celebration even better.” The museum will celebrate its birthday in April, when it will feature a special tour of houses designed by renowned architect Gerry Jones. The museum is divided into three wings: The Central Ansbaugh Auditorium, the Archaeology Wing and the Pioneer Wing. The museum also has a “mini-wing” outside with larger historic machinery, Cave Creek’s first church and an original Tubercular Cabin, the last of its kind in Arizona. There are also collections in central Ansbaugh Auditorium. “This includes the ranching community, mercantile industry, military and early historic times of Phoenix,” Brace says. “We also have an amazing archeological collection documenting the Hohokam period and later— ceramics, baskets, stone tools dating back a 1,000 years before Anglo-European occupation.” This season, the museum exhibits are focused on
Spring Training Baseball Guide 2020
Carefree’s history. The next season, 2020/2021, will celebrate Carefree’s sesquicentennial. “We’ve just raised over $20,000 to renovate our Pioneer Wing,” Brace says. “Over the summer, we’ll be rehabilitating our pioneer wing to incorporate 21st-century exhibits and interpretations of people and things and events that happened in Cave Creek from the 19th century to the 20th century.” Visitors can explore the museum October through May. It’s open to the public from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. The museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students 12 and over. Children under 12 years old get free admission. The museum is located at 6140 E. Skyline Drive, Cave Creek. For more information, visit cavecreekmuseum.org or call 480.488.2764.

San Diego Padres: 2019 record – 70-92
All the way down the West Coast, the Padres remain in the middle of a rebuild. They stayed busy this offseason by trading for Tommy Pham and Jake Cronenworth. They also acquired infielder Jurickson Profar, outfielder Trent Grisham and pitcher Zach Davies. Wanting to improve the bullpen, the team resigned Drew Pomeranz, to a fouryear, $34 million contract. They also signed Pierce Johnson, who played in Japan last season, to a two-year, $5 million deal.
San Francisco Giants: 2019 record – 77-85
On the other side of the bay, the Giants are looking to shake things up in the NL West. During the winter meetings, the Giants landed veteran infielder Zack Cozart from the Angels and persuaded the Angels to give them their first-round draft pick of 2019, Will Wilson. To improve their pitching staff, the Giants signed Drew
Smyly to a one-year, $4 million deal and the resigned Tyler Anderson. They also claimed former Angel, Luis Madero. What fans won’t see are the behind-the-scenes changes. It started at the top when Scott Harris signed on as the new general manager. From there, Gabe Kapler was hired as the new coach. Eight other coaches were added to Kapler’s staff, including thirdbase coach Ron Wotus.
Seattle Mariners: 2019 record – 68-94
After a 90-plus-loss season, the Mariners focuses on rebuilding their young core. The biggest offseason move they made was extending a contract with the No. 4 prospect in baseball, Evan White. He will star with the Mariners for six years, thanks to a contract worth $24 million. They also added powerhitting third baseman Patrick Wisdom, the switch-hitting versatile second baseman Sam Haggerty, and pitchers Adam Hill, Phillips Valdez, Nestor Cortes and Carl Edwards. Newbie Kendall Graveman
is expected to start in the majors, where he hasn’t played since he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018. He and the team reached a one-year, $1.5 million deal.
Texas Rangers: 2019 record – 78-84
With a new residence hall now complete, the Rangers are ready to hit home runs. The biggest addition to the team is the two-time Cy Young winner and three-time All-Star Corey Kluber, who arrived in a trade with Texas for Delino DeShields and Emmanuel Clase. With the Kluber deal done, the team needed some pop to provide Kluber with run support, so they signed Todd Frazier from the Mets. The deal will cost the Rangers $5 million for one year of Frazier’s service. The Rangers made other moves, also acquiring 12 players: Sam Travis, Robinson Chirinos, Adolis Garcia, Edinson Volquez, Ian Gibaut, Tim Federowicz, Joely Rodriguez, Jordan Lyles, Nomar Mazara, Jimmy Herget, Nick Goody and Kyle Gibson.
