Ah, Summer

CONCERTS, FESTIVALS, BOOK LAUNCHES, LUNAR LANDINGS … WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE? BY KEVIN UHRICH

S

o you say you want to have a fun summer but you don’t know what to do, where to go or how to fi nd the people, places and events that will make your time off meaningful and memorable. Welcome to our annual Summer Guide, where you will fi nd information for all the concerts, festivals and happenings that make May through August an extra-special time in Pasadena and the rest of Southern California. With three major symphony orchestras calling Pasadena home, people here seem to have always taken their outdoor concert pleasures seriously, and this year is no exception. The Pasadena Symphony & POPS features its annual five–show Summer Concert Series at the LA County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in Arcadia. In addition, the POPS will be teaming up with country singer Dwight Yoakam on June 15 in its third annual summer concert festival “Live at the Arboretum.” The symphony will also be performing its annual free “Music Under the Stars” show on June 1 at Pasadena City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave., Pasadena. Victor Vener’s California Philharmonic also has a full slate of performances scheduled, as does Rachael Worby’s MUSE/IQUE Orchestra, with CalPhil performing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown LA and MUSE/ IQUE working its musical magique on the lawn of the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino. The Rose Bowl has had quite a few big names play there over the past several years, but with the Arroyo Seco Weekend music festival and the Rolling Stones both rescheduling to still unspecified dates, the biggest show at the stadium this summer may be “Apollo 11: An Immersive 360 Adventure” from July 5 through July 29, marking the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing. Other area musical hotspots include The Rose — which will be hosting concerts by some of the biggest names in rock over the past few decades, among them Don McClean, Ted Nugent and Wilson Phillips — and Glendale’s Alex Theatre. On Saturday, May 4, they’ll be hosting former Rose Parade TV commentator Bob Eubanks, who is presenting “Bob Eubanks: Backstage with the Beatles.” On May 16, Johnny Mathis celebrates 63 years as a recording artist at a concert at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. For those who prefer their fun outdoors, a number of festivals, or as Arts Editor Carl Kozlowski calls them “a

bountiful bevy of outdoor events,” are planned for the coming months, beginning June 8 with Eat See Hear. “Featuring the largest outdoor movie screens on the West Coast, along with pre-fi lm concerts by bands on the rise and a tasty array of the region’s hottest food trucks, this is one series worth seeing,” Kozlowski writes. There’s also the Eat Drink Vegan (EDV) fest, or the “Vegan Coachella,” featuring food vendors, more than 250 vegan beverages, and a plant-based marketplace. On Saturday, May 4, the Kentucky Derby Trackside Beer Festival opens at Santa Anita Park racetrack, with local craft breweries, top food trucks and a day of racing honoring last year’s Triple Crown win by Justify. On June 15-16 the family-friendly Pasadena Chalk Festival, the world’s largest street-art festival, features hundreds of artists, and one block over, the 18th Annual Pasadena Police Classic Car Show includes antique cars parked on display on Green Street. Back at Santa Anita, the 626 Night Market is expected to draw thousands of people by building on the Asian cultural phenomenon of late-night street markets. Of course, what would summer be without the LA County Fair and the Orange County Fair, the latter this year including concerts by Chicago, Michael McDonald and Chaka Khan, grand marshal of the 2019 Tournament of Roses. For many children, summer time means camp. But not all camps are the same. Today, as writer Sheila Mendes Coleman found, “summer camps are designed for every kind of student with every kind of need and interest.” These days, Coleman writes, “the options are not only more plentiful — but also more specialized.” For those who enjoy the mountains, numerous trails are open for hiking this summer, only be sure to take along plenty of water, sun screen and a working phone. And for those who simply want to relax, Pasadena is home to numerous parks and gardens created specifically to relieve stress and restore a sense of calm and serenity. Summer is also a major time for new book releases, with a number of nationally known writers and local authors using these next few months to launch their latest works. There are no guarantees in life, but we are confident that after reading our handy guide and experiencing some of the terrific events taking place over the next few months, yours will be a summer to remember. ■ SUMMER GUIDE 2019 PASADENA WEEKLY

atching live music can only add to the carefree spirit of the summer season, as enjoying a good groove or a sumptuous symphony makes the spirit soar. This summer, Pasadena has a particularly entertaining array of concerts and outdoor events that are sure to create magical musical memories for years to come. The Rose Bowl kicks off the summer concert season this weekend with Saturday and Sunday performances by Korean pop sensations BTS. Fresh off of “Saturday Night Live” last month, the seven-member group has sung and danced their way across Asia since 2013 before suddenly breaking big in America in recent months. It’ll be interesting to see if the Bowl’s Arroyo Seco neighbors are more annoyed by the high-pitched shrieks of the group’s teenage fans or the roaring rock of the Rolling Stones when that band reschedules its tour stop upon singer Mick Jagger’s return from heart surgery. Visit ticketmaster.com. The Rose Bowl will also play host to a unique nonmusical event throughout July when it presents “Apollo 11: An Immersive 360 Adventure” from July 5 through July 29. Marking the 50th anniversary of astronaut Neil Armstrong’s lunar mission and first steps on the moon, the groundbreaking event tells the historic story with a full cast and is presented in a spectacular lunar dome with 40,000 square feet of video projections. The immersive experience takes visitors from the thrill of the countdown to the enormous Saturn V rocket launch and the unforgettable journey to the moon. Pasadena is also home to three world-class orchestras, and summer marks their hottest season of the year. The Pasadena POPS is in full force with its annual Summer Concert Series at the LA County Arboretum in Arcadia. This year’s five-concert season includes “Great American Songbook: Icons from Tin Pan Alley, Broadway & Hollywood” (June 22), “Rhapsody in Blue” (July 13), “Michael Feinstein Sings Cole Porter” (Aug. 3), “Music of Elton John Starring Michael Cavanaugh” (Aug. 24) and “MGM Movie Classics: Wizard of Oz 80th Anniversary” (Sept. 14). The POPS will also team with country music superstar Dwight Yoakam in its third annual summer concert festival “Live at the Arboretum”. many more in this innovative night. But on top of that, the POPS annually give back to the community with a free “Music Under the Stars” concert in front of Pasadena City Hall. This year’s “Stars” event takes place June 1 and features guest singers Finn Sagal and Valerie Perri plus the JPL Chorus in a celebration of music from Broadway, Hollywood and the Great American Songbook. Visit Pasadenasymphony-pops.org. Another area orchestra that puts a big spin on the classical genre is MUSE/IQUE, under maestra Rachael Worby, combines a core symphony with an inventive array of musical styles and, often, dance performances. This summer’s shows are themed “Moving/Pictures” (July 6), “Train/Glory” (Aug. 3) and “Band/Together” (Aug. 24), with all performances held on the grounds of the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino. Visit muse-ique.org. The third ensemble of musical masters is California Philharmonic, which presents grand shows throughout the year at Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles under the astute direction of beloved maestro Victor Vener. This summer’s series of shows include “Beethoven Meets the Beatles” (June 30), “Bastille Day” (July 14), “Space: A Giant Leap” (July 28), “Carmen Goes to the Movies” (Aug. 11) and “The Emperor’s Roundup” (Aug. 18). Visit calphil.com. Of course, there are plenty of area hotspots that are home to great music all year round, and their summer schedules are also packed with fun. Glendale’s Alex Theatre brings the rock and roll memories of the longtime former Rose Parade TV commentator to life this Saturday, May 4, with “Bob Eubanks: Backstage with thee Backs kstage age w ith th continued on page 12 SUMMER GUIDE 2019 PASADENA WEEKLY

Not to be outdone, huge area favorite Glendale Cruise Night fills Brand Boulevard with classic rock and classic cars on July 20. Visit glendalecruisenight.com. he Beach Boys had it right nearly 60 years ago when they spread the word to the world of Southern California’s endless summer magic. But the actual season of sun is an especially great time to soak in some rays along with some suds and have a great time at the ample array of festivals throughout the region. Here are a few suggestions to help make this summer your best ever. The summer movie season means blockbuster after blockbuster at the area’s many multiplexes, but the fine folks at Eat See Hear offer Angelenos another way to enjoy great films through their annual outdoor summer screening series. Featuring the largest outdoor movie screens on the West Coast, along with pre-film concerts by bands on the rise and a tasty array of the region’s hottest food trucks, this is one series worth seeing. While they show movies throughout all of Southern California, in Pasadena the fun comes to Centennial Square at Pasadena City Hall, located at 100 N. Garfield Ave. The local screenings kick off with “The Princess Bride” (June 8), followed by “Home Alone” (July 27), “Say Anything” (Sept. 7) and “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (Sept. 14). Visit eatseehear.com. Health-conscious foodies have become a force over the past decade, and their growing strength can be seen most prominently in the Eat Drink Vegan (EDV) fest on June 22

at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Regarded nationwide as the “Vegan Coachella,” EDV feaChalk Festival tures highly curated restaurants and food vendors, over 250 vegan beverages, and a plant-based marketplace that showcases everything from clothing and candles to packaged foods and skin care. Now hosting more than 10,000 attendees annually, EDV offers two levels of admission. General admission includes unlimited pours of craft beer, kombucha, wine, soda, tea and cider in a four-ounce glass and access to food vendors for $50, while VIP offers the same drinks in an eight-ounce glass and early access to the food vendors for $115. Visit eatdrinkvegan.com. Santa Anita Park racetrack has long been beloved for offering the excitement of horse racing amid a gorgeous mountain backdrop, but it’s also a fun place to enjoy an eclectic array of fun events in summer. This year, the fun starts early on May 4 when the Kentucky Derby Trackside Beer Festival gives equine aficionados the chance to celebrate the most famous race in America without heading to the Bluegrass State. Featuring local craft breweries and top food trucks at the trackside bash, the day includes racing from a seat on the homestretch and a souvenir pennant commemorating Justify’s historic 2018 Triple Crown victory. The $35 General Trackside Package includes eight three-ounce beer tastings, continued conti con tinued d on pa page ge 24 SUMMER GUIDE 2019 PASADENA WEEKLY

a $5 betting voucher, the commemorative pennant, club house admission, racing program and wagering tip sheet and access to trackside and grandstand seating areas. Visit santaanita.com. A more family-friendly kind of fun can be had at the Pasadena Chalk Festival from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 15 and 16 at the Paseo, 300 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena. The free event is the largest street-art festival on the planet, featuring hundreds of artists crafting elaborate artworks on the sidewalks of the Paseo mall and surrounding areas in the heart of the city before appreciative audiences of more than 100,000 people. The free fun is Police Classic paired with the 18th Car Show Annual Pasadena Police Classic Car Show, which features dozens of the coolest cars in Southern California on display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Green Street. Add in food booths, raffle prizes and a police helicopter ride auction and you’ve got fun for everyone. Beer lovers abound everywhere amid summer heat, and that’s why summer is the perfect time for the 11th Annual L.A. Beer Week, which has its Kickoff Festival on June 15 at the Los Angeles Center Studio, 1201 W. Fifth St. in Los Angeles. Featuring more than 250 beers from over 90 independent craft breweries, live music and great local food, this is the place to wet your whistle this summer. 24

Early bird admission prices are in force through May 15, including $45 general admission, $65 for VIPs and $25 for designated drivers. Visit labeerweek.org. Patriotism will be on full display starting at 2 p.m. July 4th at Americafest at the Rose Bowl, 1001 Rose Bowl Drive, Pasadena.. The event promises fun for all ages and includes one of Southern California’s biggest fireworks displays. General admission is $15. Children 5 years and under are free. Reserved seating is $30. For more information, call (626) 577-3100 or visit visitpasadena.com/events/americafest/. One of the most hugely popular and distinctive summer attractions in the San Gabriel Valley is the 626 Night Market, which builds off the Asian cultural phenomenon of latenight street markets with countless food vendors by playing host to thousands of local aficionados at Santa Anita Park, 285 Huntington Drive, Arcadia. Founded in 2012, this year’s edition will be open July 5-7, July 12-14, Aug. 9-11 and Aug. 30-Sept. 1. The iconic Southern Californian event at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia features more than 300 food, merchandise, craft, art, game, music, and entertainment attractions in an epic event that appeals to all ages with up to 100,000 attendees per three-day weekend. 626 Night Market aims to unite and empower the community by serving as a platform for showcasing local talent including chefs, entrepreneurs and artists. Visit 626nightmarket.com. Last but definitely not least, summer fairs are fantastic ways to have tons of fun and food at relatively affordable prices. This year’s Orange County Fair runs from July 12 through Aug. 11 and as always, features an eclectic array of concerts including Chicago (July 26), B-52s and Dead Man’s Party (Aug. 1), Michael McDonald and this year’s beloved Rose Parade Grand Marshal Chaka Khan (Aug. 2) and “Weird Al” Yankovic (Aug. 8). Visit ocfair.com. Not to be outdone, the LA County Fair returns to Pomona from Aug. 30-Sept. 22 and will feature another impressive string of performances that have yet to be announced. Camping Cornucopia

GREATER PASADENA IS HOME TO A DIVERSE ARRAY OF TRADITIONAL AND SPECIALIZED SUMMER CAMPS BY SHEILA MENDES COLEMAN

O

nce upon a time, summer camps consisted solely of outdoor options. There was the requisite swimming, hiking, canoeing and lanyard-making offerings, as well as other outdoor crafts, lessons in team-building and adventure-seeking — and it was good. But our modern times have spawned a wonderfully inclusive trend; tailored camps designed for every kind of student with every kind of need and interest. In addition to the traditional camp options, such as local perennial favorites Camp Adventurewood (campadventurewood.com — formerly known as Camp Shi’ini), Tom Sawyer Camp (tomsawyercamps.com), Camp Kids Klub (campkidsklub.com) and Steve and Kate’s Camp (steveandkatescamp.com/pasadena), there’s a brave new world of camps that take into account our city’s complex, unique community of youngsters and all their bourgeoning interests and talents. Nowadays, the options are not only more plentiful — but also more specialized. This has resulted in a wondrous array of summer camp choices sure to please even the pickiest camper — and the most discriminating parent. Never before has there been such a bounty of summer camp options; from classes centered on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) principles and college-prep to camps focusing on performing arts, tennis, gymnastics, writing, improv comedy — even a rock and roll and a surf camp. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY STEMworld (stemworld.net) includes field trips to the Griffith Observatory and the Natural History Museum, but also takes the model of the traditional field trip and sends it into the stratosphere with space/time exploration and techthemed camp segments, such as Moon Colony 2030, an astrophysics and engineering camp,

and Spy Camp, which allows campers to participate in biochemical experiments and tech-gadgets. Camp Galileo (galileo-camps.com) at Crestview Preparatory School in La Caùada Flintridge caters similarly to budding scientists, but with an adventurist bent. Camp sessions include Deep Ocean Explorers, Renaissance Adventure and Expedition to Everest. iving in the Los Angeles area can be overwhelming, with traffic and concrete dominating the senses nearly everywhere. But thankfully, Pasadena and its environs have plenty of peaceful spots as well, giving residents a chance to fi nd some quiet amid the madness. Here are a few great spots (in alphabetical order) to relax and recharge. ARLINGTON GARDEN 75 Arlington Drive, Pasadena It’s not often that parks enable visitors to rearrange their chairs and benches, but this pet-friendly public botanical garden of Mediterranean plants goes the extra mile to be visitor friendly. Those heading east, take a right on Orange Grove Boulevard and turn left on Arlington Drive. Those heading west on Colorado Boulevard, take a left on Fair Oaks Avenue to Arlington Drive, then turn right. California Blvd., Pasadena, With “The Big Bang Theory” sadly leaving the airwaves after a dozen hit seasons, now is the perfect time to kick back on the large lawns and check out the real Sheldons and Amys en route to saving the world. You can find it off the Foothill (210) Freeway on East California Boulevard. EATON CANYON 1750 N. Altadena Drive, Pasadena Nature trails abound throughout this favorite hiking spot in the heart of the San Gabriel Mountains on Altadena Drive. Whether you’re on your own or with a group, picnicking or meditating, this is a wonderful spot to get both centered and scenic. And if you get a little too hot, its Nature Center will help you get cool and quenched. FULLER THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY PRAYER GARDEN 135 N. Oakland Ave., Pasadena Enjoy this small, shady spot while you can, because Fuller is moving to Pomona in 2021 and developers will no doubt build on it. The combination of shade, quiet and bubbling fountain water make this a refuge tucked into the heart — and soul — of Pasadena. people have found it worth the hike and leave touching wishes and letters inside its trunk. Take Canyon Drive until the road stops past the Griffith Park gates. From the asphalt parking lot, take the trail until a spray-painted dragon is visible. The tree, which has been described by one Yelp reviewer as “large and huggable,” is close to the radio towers. GRANT PARK 232 S. Michigan Ave., Pasadena Those looking for a sweet, small spot to walk their dog in the Caltech neighborhood should head here. It’s within walking distance of both the venerable science institution and Pasadena City College, providing equal respite to students from both between the stress of tests. SAM MERRILL TRAIL Head all the way up Lake Avenue until it ends, park and head over to what used to be the Cobb Estates. There you can pick up Sam Merrill Trail, a major hiking trail in the Las Flores Canyon of the San Gabriel Mountain Range north of Altadena. LACY PARK 1485 Virginia Road, San Marino, Located near the Huntington Library amid a neighborhood in the San Gabriel Valley’s ritziest enclave, this is a great spot for one and all to bike, walk, picnic and enjoy the small flower garden. During the week it’s free to all 32

who visit, but on the weekend, nonresidents must pay an entrance fee. MERRILL TRAIL The Cobb Estates used to be a prime residence past the top of Lake Avenue. But with those gone, the main draw for visitors these days is to find Sam Merrill Trail in the Las Flores Canyon of the San Gabriel Mountain Range north of Altadena. MILLARD CANYON FALLS Love waterfalls but can’t make it to Hawaii or another exotic paradise? Then head over to Millard Canyon Falls Trail near Altadena, which features a waterfall along its 2.6 mile route. Best of all, hikers of all ability levels can enjoy the views and its many activity options, while also bringing their dogs along for the day. Bear right on Lincoln and head north for 1.9 miles. Turn right on Loma Alta Drive and follow it 0.6 miles to Chaney Trail, which can be hard to see. Turn left and follow to the Millard Canyon Campground. PASADENA CITY HALL 100 N. Garfield Ave., Pasadena If you just want to find some peace without any hassle getting to it, this is the place to be. Perhaps America’s most beautiful city hall, it features a serene courtyard with a grand fountain amid a spectacular 1927 structure influenced by the early Renaissance style of 16th century Italian architect Andrea Palladio. ■
