t’s summer. For bicycling enthusiasts of all stripes it’s time to pedal out. Electric bikes provide a fabulous option for riders who’d benefit from a helping hand on hills to reduce strain, eliminate pain or just make it more fun. “We sell to a lot of boomers with bad hips and bad knees . . . the bikes help them stay active,” said Peter Miller, founder and co-owner of e-bike brand Dogleg. He and fellow founder/owner Robin Gardner started the company in 2009, building on the success of their electric golf cart and trolley businesses Coast Cart and Hill Billy USA. Recent advances in lithium battery manufacturing and recycling make the e-bike option more economical and eco-friendly. And while many think an electric assist is for “lazy” biking, Miller begs to differ. 6 | Ventura County Summer Guide | 2020 |
“It’s not about being lazy, it’s about being smart,” said Miller. For one customer with multiple sclerosis, “The bike gave her her life back.” E-bikes can also encourage folks to “get out and exercise” when they otherwise wouldn’t, said Miller. My family — mom, dad and 14 year-old — each tested two Dogleg models, The Step Thru classic cruiser and the Smoothie mountain bike model. We rode on trails, paths and roadways, including the Ojai Valley Trail from Ojai to Foster Park and back — uphill all the way on the return. These bikes boosted the fun factor on all trails. Over the course of two days, I personally rode about 45 miles on flat paved bike paths, on roads, and on the up-and-down Shelf Road loop that requires a long and steep climb to get to the trail. My son and I did an evening ride, requiring the use of the
bright front and rear lights (connected to the battery). On every ride I got exercise. On the longer rides with hills I breathed hard, sweated and used my glutes, core and thigh muscles. I also smiled the entire time. If you hit the mountain bike trails hard and love it, then maybe you won’t be interested, but if you’ve got a knee injury, an ankle problem or similar issues, an e-bike might keep you riding longer and farther. And if you battle getting motivated to get out and ride, an e-bike could be a great way to make it more fun. Perhaps my favorite jaunt out on the cruiser was a milk run, down the hill to the midtown market on a Sunday morning. A little bit of exercise, out in the sunshine and no use of fossil fuels. I also used the bike for a work-related

Row your boat Free summer camp at Casitas Rowing

f the thought of a morning spent outdoors, on the water, surrounded by scenic mountains and in the company of positive, encouraging people brings a smile to your face, then Casitas Rowing’s summer camps just might be for your kid. And this year, local students can attend free of charge. Opened 12 years ago by Wendy and Eric Gillett, Casitas Rowing offers (as the name implies) rowing opportunities for kids and adults on beautiful Lake Casitas. While the organization does offer competitive opportunities for high school students and adults, summer camps are all about the fun of being outside on the lake. “Camps are designed for beginners. We teach them all the basics: terms, boat handling,” says Wendy Gillett. “We get them on the water and they just can get out and row.” Rowing is a wonderful way to enjoy one of Ventura County’s most valuable resources — Lake Casitas — while getting some exercise in the fresh air and taking a break from screen time. Casitas Rowing accepts students from 6th grade through 12th grade, from anywhere, but this year will have a special offer for locals: students in the Ojai or Ventura Unified school districts will be able to attend a week of summer camp absolutely free. The camps are funded by a grant from the LA84 Foundation. “They started after the 1984 Olympics,” Gillett explains. “There was money left over, so they created a foundation . . . to support Olympic sports in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.” Lake Casitas was the site of the 1984 rowing competitions, made famous in part by gold medalist Brad Alan Lewis, who wrote Assault on Lake Casitas about his rowing career. Gillett said that Casitas Rowing gets a grant every few years from LA84, but that this year was special. With the coronavirus shutting down schools and gyms, the foundation knew people would be craving a physical outlet. The pandemic also led to layoffs and widespread economic hardship; the Gilletts guessed that many families might be struggling financially. When Casitas Rowing received a generous grant from LA84, “instantly we thought about summer camps. [The money will] allow kids and families to come out and do rowing.” Camps start June 22, and Casitas Rowing is meticulously following guidelines provided by the state and county for safe

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 opening. One-week camp sessions will consist of groups of 10 rowers, most of whom will operate their own boat — although two-person boats are available for siblings or kids that share a “social bubble” (these require waivers). There’s a protocol for cleaning boats and oar handles. Hand sanitizer will be readily available, and students and staff will be required to wear masks whenever they might be within 6 feet of others — during sign in, conversing with coaches, etc. “We’ve taken every precaution, and have tried to go above and beyond [government guidelines],” Gillett says. “Rowing is set up for this — outside, in the summer, individual boats. . . . It’s been a lot to get into place, but now it’s pretty easy. It’s pretty standard stuff for rowing.” Despite the image many people have of rowing as a demanding, highly competitive sport reserved for the elite, Gillett says there’s another side to it. It takes place outdoors in a beautiful location, for one. While many sports require joining at a young age to excel, rowing is great for young adults considering something athletic for the first time. “Rowing is a sport that most kids start in the 7th or 8th grade . . . A lot of kids are still searching at that age.” Casitas Rowing already has 120 students signed up to attend camp this summer, but is prepared to add more staff and equipment as the need dictates. “We want to make sure everyone gets a summer camp,” Gillett says. “We’re proud of what the community has done for us — they really embraced us. This is a way for us to give back.”

sland Packers resumed public transportation to Channel Islands National Park on June 1, bringing island excursions back on the menu for summer adventures!
SAFETY FIRST The boat concessionaire has adhered to or surpassed guidelines for reopening provided by both state and county health officials, as well as recommendations from the National Park Service, to keep everyone on board comfortable as well as safe from COVID-19. “We’re only at 40 percent capacity,” explains Cherryl Connally, Island Packers co-owner. Island Harbor in Oxnard can now carry 34 passengers (down from an 80-person capacity) and Ventura Harbor catamarans are accepting up to 56 passengers (rather than 150). “This is a nice, low amount. There’s plenty of space onboard.” Office and boat crew wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and employees are health screened daily. Passengers must wear masks while checking in and on the vessels (face coverings are optional once on the island). Boats are sanitized during stops and between runs, and seating is assigned to maintain social distancing. “Our crews are doing an excellent job with safety protocols with our passengers. And our passengers are feeling

WONDERFUL WILDLIFE Whale watching trips are available year round, with summer ushering in humpback and blue whale season. “We’ve had some nice sightings of fin whales, too,” Connally says. “Humpbacks should be showing up soon.” Whale watchers might also spot dolphins, or the occasional gray or minke whale. Pelagic birdwatching trips are 12-hour affairs, leaving at 7 a.m. from Ventura Harbor. Red-billed tropicbirds, storm petrels and murrelets are among the many bird species viewable on these popular cruises.

safe — we’re getting great reviews on Google and Facebook about our operation because of safety factors,” says Connally. “Safety is so important to us.”
Santa Cruz Island is the largest and most visited island in the park, with many natural and cultural riches: miles of hiking, sea caves, tide pools, Chumash shell middens and more. Island Packers runs boats there daily, bringing day-trippers, campers and kayakers to Prisoners Harbor. One of its greatest claims to fame is the island scrub jay. Found nowhere else on Earth, the bright blue bird is a darling of the birdwatching community. “People come from all over the world to see that little jay,” Connally says with a chuckle. On the island’s northwest coast is Painted Cave, one of the largest and deepest sea caves in the world. Its name comes from the colorful rock, lichens and algae upon its walls. A new trip added for 2020 allows visitors to first view the cave from the Island Packers catamaran, and then continue on to Prisoners Harbor for three hours of island exploration. Another new excursion is the multi-port
SO MUCH TO EXPLORE There’s no one way to explore the Channel Islands, and no two islands are completely alike. Each is special in its own way, providing wholly unique opportunities for hiking, camping, kayaking and/or wildlife viewing. Anacapa Island is just 12 miles from the mainland, with a two-mile hiking trail system that allows visitors to see endemic plant species, a charming lighthouse, numerous seabirds and more. “Anacapa Island has the third largest colony of Western gulls,” notes Connally. “The seagull chicks just hatched, and they’re so cute!” Those who take the two-hour ride to Bechers Bay on Santa Rosa Island are rewarded with white sand beaches, miles of hiking through rolling hills and the possibility of dolphin, blue and humpback whale sightings during the crossing. Craving adventure? Consider camping on rugged, windswept San Miguel Island, with 27 miles of coastline, a mesmerizing Caliche Forest (formed from sand castings of ancient vegetation) and thousands of breeding seals and sea lions.

A trip to Channel Islands National Park is an unforgettable experience. With Island Packers ready to welcome visitors aboard once again, now is a great time to explore this one-of-a-kind ecosystem. But boats are filling up fast, so it’s best to book trips in advance. “It’s just exciting to see all these people going out [after quarantine],” Connally says of her company’s recent operations. “They feel safe onboard, and they’re so happy . . . It just warms my heart.”
