ORTHODONTICS AT 30,000 FEET From Dr. Chamberlain’s Desktop

very once in a while I get the chance to talk to a stranger on the airplane coming or going in my travels. A few weeks ago, I had that chance while traveling from Dr. Thomas Chamberlain Buffalo, NY back to Phoenix. As part of our travels, our conversation inevitably came to, “So, what do you do for work?” I always love this question because I feel passionate about what I do and I often feel compelled to tell people what I can do for them to help them in their lives. This was no different. However, the gentleman didn’t seem to understand the differences between a dentist who does orthodontics and an Orthodontic Specialist. I explained to him that an Orthodontic Specialist has attended two to three more years of education beyond dental school to be taught proper orthodontic techniques, while a dentist who does orthodontics does not have that extensive specialized training. He also inquired how to find a good Orthodontist in his
community. I explained to him that with today’s use of reviews on the internet, it is now possible to get a much clearer and true picture of an orthodontic office and how people feel about the doctor and staff. Although reviews don’t negate the need to ‘see for yourself’’ when you schedule an appointment (I’ll talk more about that in a moment), but reviews do let you glance into other peoples, non-biased experiences with that office. It’s easy to find reviews on any dentist or orthodontist. Just Google search, “Orthodontics in Chandler, AZ,” “Braces in Chandler, AZ,” or “Orthodontists in Chandler, AZ.” Google is very strict on how reviews are given and you can be certain the reviews are legitimate. Just like a good friend who reviews a movie or gives a review on a local restaurant, an orthodontic review page gives good insight into whether the office is creating fans. Our conversation then turned to other things. However, the discussion sparked some insights that I will share at the next issue. In the meantime, I invite you to take a Google search on the above and read our reviews (Chamberlain Orthodontics happens to be the most reviewed and the highest reviewed Orthodontics office in the East Valley). We also received the 2014 Best of Chandler
Award - Orthodontist. “Each year, the Chandler Award Program identifies companies that we believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help make the Chandler area a great place to live, work and play.” Thank you Chandler for recognizing us—we are humbled. So go ahead and google us and call us at 480-448-2477 and see what everyone’s talking about.

Wisdom teeth removal
Wisdom teeth are almost certain to cause problems if left in place. This is particularly true of impacted wisdom teeth, such problems may occur suddenly and often at the most inconvenient time. While the kids are out for summer break, there couldn’t be a better time to take care of this preventative procedure The average mouth does not have room for the third molars, also known as “wisdom teeth,” to come in properly. These poorly positioned impacted teeth can cause many problems such as swelling, stiffness, pain and illness. The pressure from the wisdom teeth may move other teeth and disrupt the orthodontic of natural alignment of teeth. The most serious problem occurs when tumors or cysts form around the impacted wisdom tooth, resulting in the destruction of the jawbone and healthy teeth. It is now recommended that impacted wisdom teeth be removed early to prevent these problems. Most commonly we remove wisdom teeth between the ages of 14 and 22 years whether they are causing problems or not. The procedure is technically easier and patients recover much quicker when they are younger. What is a relatively minor procedure at 20 can before quite difficult in patients as they get older. Also, the risk of complications increases with age and the healing process is slower. We utilize the latest technologies and techniques to make your procedure go smoother and your healing process faster. For a consultation, please call Dr. Shah at 480.814.9500. Fire Department Changes Name to Reflect Services
To reflect its wide-ranging services, the Chandler Fire Department is rolling out a renewed look July 27 with the rebranding of its logo and a new name—Chandler Fire Health and Medical—to boot. The fire department does more than just respond to house fires, said Keith Welch, battalion chief and public information officer for CFHM. It handles emergency response, prevention activities and programs and on-scene medical assessment. “Firemen want to make sure that people are up to speed and understand that,” Welch explained. He continued that the department has always provided health and medical care. “Under the health part, we want to outline some of our prevention programs that we currently do—car
seat installation, bike safety program, drowning prevention...we do blood pressure checks, we do blood glucose, community clinics...all those really lend themselves to prevention, which is really what we define health as.” Promoting health to the community is a goal of the CFHM, providing clinics for blood pressure and glucose checks. Welch said through these types of clinics, he’s been able to identify issues for residents. “Health means pro-activity in the community to prevent a lot of these things that happen on the medical end.” In Chandler, every firefighter must be a minimum of EMT (emergency medical technician) certified, above that are paramedics. “Seventy percent of our department are paramedics,” Welch explained. “What that means for the citizen is

East Valley Moms Back-to-School Immunizations and Physicals
By Tracy House Schools have been working all summer to welcome the kiddos back through the classroom doors and to ensure the pupils are walking through those doors healthy, it might be a good time to schedule that back-to-school physical and verify the kids are up to date on their immunizations. Dr. Jessica Regnaert, a family practice physician with Banner Health Group, offered some timely suggestions for keeping the kids healthy. Beginning with students just starting out in kindergarten, Regnaert said, “It’s very important, especially prior to starting kindergarten, to make sure that they’re up-to-date on their immunizations and safe when they go back to school.” Regnaert recommended parents

schedule physicals early in the summer or even have annual physicals around a child’s birthday to keep him or her on a yearly schedule and to avoid the summer rush on sports physicals. The crucial ages to be sure children are up-to-date on immunizations are around 4 and 5 years old or kindergarten age; 10 and 11 years old; and students who have graduated high school and are off to college. “College, especially living in dorms, can be places where a lot of germs are spread.” Schools require students to have updated immunizations. “Looking at it from the school’s perspective, they’re just trying to protect all their kids and make sure that something doesn’t spread through the school,” she said.

Top 5 Ways to Save on Back to School Shopping
Kids are heading back to school soon. Students from preschool to college can drain their parents’ wallets, but they don’t need to! From clothes to supplies and even books, there are ways to save money.
Supplies Before you start shopping, make a list of what you need. Search your house for any items that you can reuse from prior years. Don’t buy anything that isn’t on your list and never pay full price. There are plenty of sales going on all month on everything you will need.

Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad
You probably wouldn’t recognize my kitchen table on Sunday mornings. It’s pretty fun to look at, though. Old recipe boxes are stacked on top of each other. Mounds of heritage recipes that I’ve researched, collected and categorized fill the tabletop from corner to corner. Then the organizing begins. The pile that’s always the highest is the “gotta make it now” category. Because of your family stories and kitchen memories attached to these recipes, Sunday mornings for me have become rich and rewarding “play dates” that I relish. This week I reached through my paper trove to open the diary that I kept while on the road rescuing recipes a few years ago. Out fell a sheet of paper and along with it the memory of Tucsonan Selina Ramos, who had emailed me about her family’s Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad recipe. Her note mentioned that it’s
perfect as a picnic salad or a tomatoless salsa for chip dipping. I stuck it on the “gotta make it now” pile and made it later in the day. This salad is really delicious because it has that fantastic southwestern flavor of grilled corn off the cob. The variety of hot chillies and bell peppers add a lot of flavor, and the hint of cumin brings it all together. I had never thought of grilling jicama before, but it was wonderful in this combination. Selina’s got the right idea with this dish being a great picnic or backyard barbecue salad because it transports and holds up well in the heat. In fact, it can be eaten warm right from the skillet or chilled.
Selina’s Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad
2 tablespoons olive oil 4 large fresh ears of corn 1 poblano or hatch chili, chopped fine 1 large jalapeño pepper, chopped fine 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 yellow bell pepper, diced 1 cup chopped jicama 1 bunch green onions, sliced thin (about 7 onions) 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped fine Juice of 1/2 lemon (or juice of 1 large lime) 1 teaspoon garlic salt or sea salt 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper

In a large skillet, heat olive oil on medium high heat. Slice corn from the husks and cook in olive oil until kernels become browned. (Caution, kernels can pop slightly.) Note: You can also grill corn on the husk until blackened, then slice off the kernels and add to skillet. Proceed to next step. Turn heat to high and to the corn add chillies, bell peppers, jicama, green onions and cumin, stirring constantly. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Pour mixture into serving bowl. Toss in cilantro, lemon or lime juice, garlic salt or sea salt and pepper. Serve warm or chilled.

Part of Mesa Public Schools, the preschool center opened its doors in August 2013 to increase opportunities for children of all abilities and provide a seamless network of professionals to meet their unique needs. More than 540 students attended the center during the 2013-14 school year. Increased Inclusion Learning Opportunities Jordan serves a diverse population of special education and general education preschoolers, and utilizes a variety of programs and methods to maximize their learning potential. The educational program and campus are specifically designed to increase school readiness and develop skills to best equip young learners for future success. Inclusion, a focus of the school’s programming, promotes meaningful interaction between students with special needs and their peers. Kim Freehan, department specialist for early childhood, said, “Jordan has become a great place for children of all backgrounds to learn together, play together and become one community together.” Classrooms are grouped by “pods” to create a natural family atmosphere and allow teachers to easily transition children between special education and general education classrooms. Pods take turns hosting monthly music and movements sessions for all students and staff. During this time, students sing and dance while laughing with friends and building a sense of community through shared experiences.
And at the heart of the campus are three age-appropriate playgrounds, which provide opportunities for inclusive play and social interaction. A Seamless Network of Professionals Tot Wallace, director of community education, shared, “We created a preschool model that meets the needs of every family regardless of placement.” The model includes a network of professionals, from highly qualified, certified teachers whose specialty is early childhood education to evaluation teams, speech-language pathologists and physical and occupational therapists who collaborate to provide targeted services to students. Exciting Summer Renovations Jordan is marking the first-year success with exciting summer renovations that will enhance the campus and its objectives. The building is receiving a makeover that includes higher ceilings, bright colors and a child-friendly atmosphere. The front office and reception area redesign will utilize the space more effectively and make it more welcoming to preschoolers and families. “We are excited about the updates because we were able to redesign our school to address the needs of 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds,” said Wallace. “It’s going to be fresh and vibrant and appealing.” Enrollment for the 2014-15 school year is underway. Training Successor Management Why Should You Be Concerned About Training Successor Management
Many business succession plans focus on the succession of ownership but neglect to address the issue of management succession. Whether you expect the management team that will follow you in the corner office to come from inside or outside the company, you should consider training one or several people to serve as interim or successor management.
This can serve multiple purposes. First, having trained successor management in the business can work into your short-term contingency plan established to cover your unexpected absence from the business (due to death, for instance). Second, trained successor management can serve as interim management in the transition period
We help clients pursue their goals by identifying financial needs, developing a plan and managing their wealth.

during and after your withdrawal from the business at your retirement, while your interest is being transferred after your death, or when you head out for that long vacation you have been yearning for. Ensure the Smooth Transition Responsibilities When you take a proactive position and train one or more people to assume management responsibilities, you can provide valuable coaching in the business and the industry it operates in. You will be able to explain the nuances of running your business as well. If you plan to keep your business indefinitely, a successor manager can be groomed over a period of time leading up to your retirement or withdrawal. If you plan to sell your business, successor management can be invaluable during the transition period when ownership changes hands. Where to Begin You may want to evaluate all potential candidates and identify strengths and weaknesses. In weighing potential candidates, you will need to identify the skills and traits that are required of the individual filling a specific role. In addition to the candidate’s competency in your business and competitive market, you will want to assess their management, leadership, integrity toward the business and employees and their long-term commitment to the success of the business. Ultimately, the person you entrust your business and employees to should possess personal character that demonstrates high ethical standards and compassion for your employees and leadership skills that will promote teamwork and trust. Choose a Successor Manager or Team You may have decided already who will take over your company (e.g., your child), but what if your child is still a minor when you pass or lacks the experience to assume the management role? You probably have one or more key employees in the business— those people who are instrumental in producing, marketing or selling your product or service. Their knowledge

and experience can be called upon, and these individuals can be groomed to act as interim management should the need arise. If your child chooses a career path outside your business, your key employees might even become the buyers of your business. Train Successor Management These are the options for training successor management: • Formal in-house training program: Such a program could include specific goals and timetables for completion. Rotation among different areas of the company and increased responsibilities can provide exposure to all aspects of the company. If your business is a family business, it is important to allow your successor the opportunity to develop leadership skills and to gain the respect of employees using his or her abilities and talents rather than through family relationships. • Outside development: If your child is your chosen successor manager, it might be a good idea to arrange for training outside of your business. Such a plan might include formal education in college or graduate school programs. Employment in another company can be valuable, as it allows the child to grow and mature outside the family business environment (it allows for early career mistakes to be made elsewhere).
