“The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.”

From Dr. Chamberlain’s Desktop

I

love this quote because I believe in striving for excellence in all things. I wanted to take this opportunity to briefly discuss three changes that are occurring at Chamberlain Orthodontics. I believe that to become the best one needs to embrace change. Change can be difficult and treacherous. It is disruptive. Perhaps that is why so many resist it. It is much easier to go with the status quo. In the Dr. Thomas Chamberlain profession of Orthodontics there have been some recent changes that will shape the future of how “moving teeth” is accomplished. To begin, let me announce the first change in our office. We are expanding our operations in the Ocotillo area by increasing our office space to accommodate more patients in the community. We will be increasing the size of our office space by 1500 square feet. Over the next three months you will see new back office space, a new reception area, a new exam room and new clinic area. The added space will lead to increased efficiency and a more uptodate and comfortable

environment. During the time of our construction, we will be seeing all of our patients in our Ray road office (Ray and McClintock). It will be a fairly quick construction time and we appreciate your patience in this effort. The next two changes in our office are a reflection of our commitment to embrace the latest in technology. First, our office is becoming “impressionless.” That hopefully will leave a better “impression” on many of our patients! ha ha! (pun intended). We have added the new technology of a digital scanner in place of more uncomfortable, less accurate traditional impressions. This new digital scanner will be the FIRST in the East Valley. If you have ever had to take a mold or impression of your teeth and didn’t enjoy the gag reflex that often occurs with it, you will appreciate the new scanner. Because of its accuracy, your scan will be sent to labs across the country for faster response time in making appliances. It also integrates with software that predicts tooth changes so you can see what your teeth will look like after movement. All of these benefits come from a simple, painfree 3 minute scan of your teeth. We think it’s worth it!

Dr. Thomas Chamberlain

Lastly, we are providing you with the latest technology in 3D. We are incorporating the iCAT digital CT scanner. It uses less radiation than a typical 2D x-ray but will give you much more information and better views of the mouth and jaws. With the current findings that link sleep wellness and breathing with Type 2 Diabetes, ADD, ADHD, autism, hypertension, stroke and even cardiovascular disease, we will now be able to routinely look at airways to insure that you, and all your family members, are breathing and sleeping well. This is just one of many advantages we will be able to have with the 3D digital CT scanner. Less radiation, better viewing and better diagnosis will lead to more efficient, more comfortable and more accurate treatment. This brings us back to the beginning quote by H. Jackson Brown, Jr. I believe Chamberlain Orthodontics is embracing the best that is available for you in the Chandler community. We are always looking to provide you with the best ideas, surroundings and technology that is available. This is how we can change both your future and the future of Chamberlain Orthodontics for the better!

2014

Wisdom teeth are almost certain to cause problems if left in place. This is particularly true of impacted wisdom teeth, such problems may occur suddenly and often at the most inconvenient time. While the kids are out for summer break, there couldn’t be a better time to take care of this preventative procedure. The average mouth does not have room for the third molars, also known as “wisdom teeth,” to come in properly. These poorly positioned impacted teeth can cause many problems such as swelling, stiffness, pain and illness. The pressure from the wisdom teeth may move other teeth and disrupt the orthodontic of natural alignment of teeth. The most serious problem occurs when tumors or cysts form around the impacted wisdom tooth, resulting in the destruction of the jawbone and healthy teeth. It is now recommended that impacted wisdom teeth be removed early to prevent these problems. Most commonly we remove wisdom teeth between the ages of 14 and 22 years whether they are causing problems or not. The procedure is technically easier and patients recover much quicker when they are younger. What is a relatively minor procedure at 20 can before quite difficult in patients as they get older. Also, the risk of complications increases with age and the healing process is slower. We utilize the latest technologies and techniques to make your procedure go smoother and your healing process faster. For a consultation, please call Dr. Shah at 480.814.9500. Football players tackle charitable work off the gridiron As a fifth grader, Zach Werlinger played football daily in his Chandler neighborhood. Similarly, Zach Hemmila grew up grasping for flags in faux gridiron games in the same hometown. Both of them continued their paths to football, eventually receiving multiple honors in Chandler Unified School District high schools. Werlinger and Hemmila now play for the University of Arizona Wildcats as quarterback and offensive line, respectively. But it’s what they do off the field that they say is more important. By Israel Gonzalez Hamilton Library and AAA Arizona are hosting “Permit Prep Challenge,” a workshop disguised as a gameshow designed to educate teens on distracted driving, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 20. Christie Robinson, a spokeswoman for AAA and the event’s instructor, said “Permit Prep Challenge” will cover a multitude of topics including crash statistics, dangers of distracted driving, the permit process and drunken driving. The course is intended for children ages 12 to 18 who are looking to take their written permit test. It is free for students and parents, who are required to attend with their children. AAA membership is not required. Robinson said the workshop is a way for AAA to give back to the community.

“AAA is excited to offer these types of programs and focus on community,” Robinson said. “Traffic safety involves everyone and we wanted to help parents and teens with driving and the permit process.” The course will be run with a trivia/gameshow theme and prizes will be offered. Some of the awards include driving simulation programs like Driver-Zed and Teensmart. Participants will receive an exit package including a packet with each question asked and answered from the workshop. The workshop will be held at Hamilton Library, located at 3700 S. Arizona Ave. There is limited space for the event and registration can be found at bit.ly/1dQuWgW.

Piano prodigies perform at Junior Original Concert By Tamara Juarez Twelve-year-old Ty Promreuk and 8-year-old Matthew Schoenthall are more than avid readers, sport fans and dedicated students. They are accomplished composers, piano prodigies and nationally recognized musicians. On June 28, Chandler pianists Ty and Matthew eagerly demonstrated the extent of their musical abilities and delivered two powerful performances at the 2015 U.S. National Junior Original Concert.

The four-day event, held at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Cerritos, California, showcased the original compositions of 13 young artists from across the country and provided honorees with the opportunity to hone their music skills through a series of workshops and collaborative projects. ChessHelps tournament open for registration

By Tracy House A 14-year-old BASIS Chandler School sophomore is doing his best to combat poverty and help his teachers by hosting a benefit chess tournament. For the second year, Prateek Pinisetti is directing the ChessHelps Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 29, at BASIS. Entry fee is $25 if registered by Monday, Aug. 24; $30 if registered by 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28; or $35 on-site registration, which closes at 8:30 a.m. the day of tournament. ChessHelps is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds for the school and the community. The event also raises money for the KIVA, a nonprofit organization with the mission of connecting people through lending to alleviate poverty. “It’s a microloan organization,” Prateek said. “They do small loans for people in developing countries to help people start a business or who need an education.” A portion of funds go to the Annual Teacher Fund at BASIS, as well. Prateek raised $6,000 last year; $3,000

from the tournament and the remainder from donations received after the competition. Awards include trophies and cash prizes for top tournament winners. Players are asked to bring their own clocks, as none are provided. Pottery studio builds creative memories By Ken Abramczyk

For Lori Neff, As You Wish Pottery isn’t about painting pottery. The company she owns with her husband, Scott, is about creating memories with loved ones and friends. “We really like the connection between people,” Lori Neff said. “They can reconnect and build memories with each other.” The studio with eight locations throughout the Phoenix area, including Chandler and Mesa, will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in September as the state’s first “paint your own pottery studio.” Patrons can create a piece of pottery, a plate, mug or dish, with loved ones, and that piece is part of the memory of that loved one. The process is simple: choose a piece of pottery, design and decorate it, then the piece is fired and glazed, and within a few days, it can be picked up. It isn’t just parents and grandparents with children or other adults who participate in classes, though the daughter date nights are popular for fam-

ily members, Neff said. The pottery “creates special memories for those who mean so much to you,” Neff said. While the studio specializes in “paint your own” pottery, a canvas is available for special events. The studio is a great place for social gatherings, Neff said. “We offer birthday parties and team building for companies to come in, too,” Neff said. Scout troops, bridal showers and field trips are also welcome. Young and old can let their creative juices flow and strengthen connections, whether those connections are personal or professional. As You Wish Pottery was founded 20 years ago with a location in Scottsdale. The Neffs purchased the company eight years ago when four Arizona locations were open and now, the Neffs have nearly doubled that number. “We now have seven,” Neff said. “We have a fantastic staff which has allowed us to expand.” As You Wish Pottery employs 85 workers. She said she believes the company has

Money grows on walls at Tortilla Flat

NearbyNews

By Kimberly Hosey

My son and I like to travel to outof-the-way places, but it’s not often that we find ourselves in the middle of town—and in the middle of nowhere—at the same time. With a population of six, Tortilla Flat might make that very short list. It also may be the only entire town that is a destination you can see in a few hours with your family. Tortilla Flat, located northeast of Apache Junction and two miles past Canyon Lake on Apache Trail, boasts the distinction of being the last surviving stagecoach stop on the historic Apache Trail. The unincorporated town knows how to make the most of its tourist appeal, and has been hosting visitors for over a century.

Arguably the main attraction is the Superstition Saloon, a bar and restaurant known for its decor, chili and burgers. Sadly for my son, it does not feature kick-in-able, cartoon-style saloon doors, but he made a show of identifying himself as the “rootin’-est, shootin’-est” as we entered, anyway. (I’m sure other patrons were duly impressed.) We visited not for food, but to see the artwork. In addition to the Western themes painted through much of the town (even the bathroom stalls have saloon-character art), Tortilla Flat has a rich history—literally. Tens of thousands of dollar bills paper nearly every wall and surface in the restaurant. The saloon started as a hangout

River rock animals

Sometimes projects that I do with my kids have a clear purpose, such as a holiday craft or as a gift. Sometimes, we do it merely “because it’s cute and fun.” River rock animals are cute and fun, and as a bonus, easy to make!

River rocks, plastic drop cloth, outdoor glue (like Gorilla Glue), outdoor acrylic paint and paint brushes. You will need the following:

Step 1 Even if you don’t have river rocks as an integral part of your landscape like I do, you know someone who does. The hardest part of this project was finding appropriately shaped rocks, which took 10 minutes. In this case, I made quail, lizards and frogs. Once I selected a rock for the body of the animal, I put it on the lawn and then searched for other rocks that resembled heads, legs or tails.

Please Contact Coachalonzo@azstingathletics.com with any questions.

Arizona Sting Athletics (ASA) will host several teams per age division. The ASA junior division will compete in a very competitive tournament schedule in Arizona and the West. The ASA program combines a mix of practice, academy and tournaments to develop players.

ARE YOU READY FOR THE CHALLENGE?

Step 2 After washing the rocks to remove excess dirt, I laid them all out on a plastic drop cloth into the shapes I’d imagined. The only cheat I used was glass beads for eyes. I just couldn’t find anything small and round enough to pass for cartoon-like frog eyes. Once the animal bodies were reassembled, I glued them together. I used Gorilla Glue, but in the future I would use a different adhesive like all-weather epoxy. One of the selling points of Gorilla Glue is that it expands as it cures to fill areas that may have missed being glued. For this project, however, it just bulged out in places I didn’t want it to show up. I used tape to hold pieces in place if they weren’t cooperating on their own.

Step 3 Once the glue was dry, my kids and I painted the animals. While my kids chose fantastical color schemes, I wanted to go for a more realistic look. I painted the lizard to look like a bluebelly that lives in my vegetable garden and the quail could be any number of birds strutting their stuff on my parents’ fence. When the paint dried, we set them out in our yard. Some are hiding under plants, others are having a party for all to see. They add a whimsical touch to our yard which my kids find quite bemusing. Costco vs. Amazon Prime mom cents

pasta vixen

I’m not a couponer. If I need something, it’s usually because I’m about to run out of it and I need it quickly. Conversely, if I have a coupon, it’s almost always for something I don’t need. That being said, I do like to save money wherever I can. In my world, the only thing that rivals finding a good deal is finding a good deal for which I don’t have to jump through a bunch of hoops. Like all big-box stores, Costco has good prices on some things and really terrible prices on others. I agree with every article I’ve ever read that buying fresh produce at Costco for nonparty use is a sure way to end up with spoiled vegetables. There are things I won’t buy anywhere else, however, things like toilet paper and garbage bags. I wouldn’t buy anywhere else, that is, until I finally broke down and bought a year’s subscription to Amazon Prime photo page

while it was on sale for $79. I decided to give Prime a shot because I am also a cord cutter and I had read that Amazon Prime’s online streaming service was really good. (More on that next month.) In the meantime, I now have free shipping on anything sold through Prime. Thanks to Amazon’s fulfillment warehouse in Goodyear, I’ve had items arrive on my doorstep within a few hours of clicking “checkout.” It’s the ultimate in last-minute shopping and I don’t even have to set foot in a retail store. Aside from specialty gifts with free shipping, is there a benefit to ordering off of Amazon Prime versus heading to Costco? After all, Amazon Prime doesn’t offer free samples of delicious food as I meander up and down the aisles. The answer to that question is “it depends.” For example, I realized af-

ter a recent Costco run that I’d forgotten coffee and I was about to run out of it but I didn’t want to go back to impulse-shopping heaven. Upon searching Amazon, I saw that they offer many of the same brands as Costco but at $10 more—even with Prime shipping. Other things, like toilet paper, fare much better. While Costco sells Cottonelle Ultra Comfort Care in a 36-pack for $34.99 (97 cents/roll), it can be had in a 32pack for $15.96 (49 cents/roll) from Amazon. Products like paper towels seem to vary greatly depending on brand, as does laundry detergent. A relatively new Amazon service that I haven’t tried out yet is Prime Pantry. Shoppers fill a 45-pound box for a shipping flat rate of $5.99, all guided by a handy tracking window to ensure not going over on box weight.

Based on pricing out some items like a Coke fridge-pack, Prime Pantry prices aren’t cheaper than Costco but they allow for shopping from the comfort of home. If Amazon only sold gifts and books then Prime membership wouldn’t compete with Costco at all. As someone who’s not known for planning ahead, there’s no way I’d survive with only a Prime membership. To that point, it’s also nice to be able to order an exotic gift at the last minute and have it shipped for free. Where Prime falls short in last-minute grocery shopping it more than makes up for in last-minute and impulse shopping. If I had to choose only one, I get more everyday use out of my Costco membership, but it sure is nice to take advantage of all that Amazon has to offer without having to pay extra for shipping.

Parents play important role in start of school year By Laurie Struna The first weeks of school set the tone for the entire year. Most students get off to a great start, but for some, the beginning of the year can be a struggle. If a student falls behind early in the school year, it can be challenging to get them on track. High school parent involvement is important “Parents need to remain involved with their students throughout high school,” shared Tamara Addis, principal at Dobson High School. “Sometimes we back off when they reach high-school age, and it is more important than ever to be involved.” Addis suggests parents stay connected by attending school functions such as open houses and cheering students on at athletic or art performances, getting involved with your School Improvement Advisory Council is an option. Secondary school parents should review district, facility and classroom polices. Attending governing board meetings is also encouraged. “Parents should educate themselves when it comes time to vote,” Addis said. “Learn about overrides or budget issues that may be on a ballot, because these are all things that can affect student achievement.” Supporting a struggling student Parents play an instrumental role in identifying and supporting a struggling student. Because they know their children’s behaviors and patterns, they can work with teachers to help them flourish. There are a variety of things a parJuly 15, 2015

ent can do to help. Talking and listening plays a major role in a successful school year. Pick up on students’ moods and language. Do they seem excited or are they frustrated? “Talk with your children every day,” said Casey Eagleburger, principal at Smith Junior High School. “Know their friends and the social media tools they’re using to communicate.” Help children aspire to do their best by aiding them with homework. If parents feel their student is falling behind, be proactive and reach out to the child’s teacher. Ask about specific tutoring opportunities, provide space and time for studying at home, limit nonessential activities and make school a priority. “If children struggle in a subject, it’s just as important to reserve time to make conversation about a subject they like,” Eagleburger added. “You can also select one night of the week that is free of homework talk.” Eagleburger and Addis said they believe the most important thing parents can do is to keep the lines of communication open with teachers. It is easy to rely on email, but sometimes a phone call is more effective. Help the teacher get to know your child. Something as simple as updating your Synergy information can be helpful. Today’s parents have access to great communication tools. By using multiple forms of communication, including the Parent Portal, the district mobile app, and subscribing to information sources such as news feeds, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, parents can ensure a successful start of the school year. comm. spotlight

By Meghan McCoy While studying music, Mike Randall was told he resembled 1950s star Buddy Holly. The bespectacled musician took that as a sign 16 years ago and formed the 1950s tribute act Come Back Buddy with his wife, Janine. Randall plays the guitar and sings for the three-piece rock ‘n’ roll band, while Janine slings a bass and sings. The band has gone through several different drummers. “Mostly our music is danceable music,” he said, adding Come Back Buddy’s motto is “Where’s the fun?” The act plays a variety of upbeat music from the ‘50s, including covers of music by Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Johnny Cash, as well as Ricky Nelson and Hank Williams. “We like to play music that people like to get up and move to and dance to,” Randall said. Fans can see for themselves when Come Back Buddy performs at 7:30

p.m. Friday, July 31, at the Chandler Center for the Arts. Admission is free. Randall said he enjoys hitting the stage because he loves seeing the audience’s reaction. “I think that is what has kept our band busy through the years,” he said. “There are a lot of people that like this music a lot.” Music fans of all ages enjoy Come Back Buddy’s music, he said, especially Baby Boomers. It doesn’t mean that youngsters and teenagers won’t appreciate the band’s music. “They like it because it is upbeat and fun,” he said. “It seems to appeal to all different ages.” Intel is the presenting sponsor of the “2015 On The House Free Summer Concert Series,” which is in its 19th year. “Intel is pleased to support the Chandler Center for the Arts’ mission to make visual and live performance arts accessible to the entire population

The Ivy Mediterranean Lounge

Grilled Salmon

Mediterranean food is enjoyable because of the wide variety of flavors that pepper its dishes. So when The Ivy Mediterranean Lounge opened in Chandler’s Pecos Ranch Plaza in June, my husband and I jumped at the chance to try it. Although there is a spacious and inviting patio, we chose to sit in the modern-yet-rustic dining room. I’d love to tell you that I’m fond of salmon, or fish of any kind. The truth is, unless it’s fresh Rocky Point shrimp or a big bowl of Cioppino, I tend to pass on fish in lieu of ribs, chicken or a tasty hanger steak. So, when I come across a recipe that reintroduces the wonderful flavor and texture of salmon, it goes right into my “go-to” file. This gorgeous, award-winning baked salmon dish is slathered with a mixture of sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, herbs and olive oil. You’ll want to make a little extra for leftovers, because the second recipe I’m sharing is for a beer and balsamic dressing that gets poured over a chilled salmon salad. The salmon recipe is from Canadian barbecue champion David Veljacic, who had been barbecuing competitively for eight years and capturing awards internationally for his salmon dish be-

fore taking the granddaddy of all barbecue prizes from the Kansas City Barbecue Society. The recipe is fantastic, with fresh salmon either grilled or baked in the oven. The second recipe is a beer and balsamic dressing I found in the “Cooking with Alaskan Beer Cookbook.” For years, the Alaskan Brewery in Juneau has been winning honors for its beer, and it finally decided to compile a cookbook featuring their favorite recipes that pair great food with their gold medal brews. Both recipes make great light meals that we’re all craving this time of year. If you have a fish recipe that you think our readers would love to try, email me. While you’re there, check out more recipes and cooking tips at www. jandatri.com.

Grilled Salmon 8 large cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley 2 tablespoons minced sun-dried tomatoes 1/4 cup olive oil 1 1/2 pounds salmon fillet, boned

Sprinkle the garlic and salt in a shallow dish. Mash the garlic with the blade of a knife. (Jan’s Note: I simply chopped the garlic on a cutting board, added the salt into the garlic and continued to chop until garlic and salt was incorporated and minced.) In a small bowl, combine mashed garlic, parsley, tomatoes and oil, mixing well. Cover and refrigerate for eight hours or overnight. When ready to barbecue, cut two lengthwise slits in the salmon fillet with a sharp knife, dividing the surface of the fish into thirds. (Cut to the skin but not through it.) Spread half the garlic mixture over the fillet and into the slits. Place the salmon, skin side down, on a greased grill rack. Cover the grill and cook over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes.

Spread the remaining garlic mixture on the fish. Continue cooking, with the lid down, over medium heat for 15 minutes, or until fish flakes easily. Remove from the grill by inserting spatulas between the skin and the flesh, lifting the fillet, and leaving the skin on the grill. Serve the skinless, boneless fillet on a bed of fresh greens. Yields 4 servings. Beer and Balsamic Salad Dressing 1/4 cup medium full-bodied beer, like Amber Ale, room temperature 2 tablespoons Balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon honey 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon fresh chopped basil, or dried 1/4 teaspoon lemon pepper 1/8 teaspoon salt

Place all ingredients in a mini blender, jar or salad cruet with a tight-fitting lid. Shake until well blended. Delicious when served over salad with chilled poached, grilled or baked salmon. July 15, 2015
