Women’s Hair Loss Why Does it Happen? & What can you do about it?

What used to be a “men’s condition” is now quickly becoming a female epidemic. It is scary to think that you could randomly wake up one day and begin to see more hair on the pillow case and less on your head. For women losing their hair, it is a serious blow to femininity and the ideal vision of themselves. We are constantly cutting and coloring to make sure our hair looks the best it can. But what if one day the un-thinkable happens… and it falls out and doesn’t grow back?

1

Question: What causes women’s hair loss? Answer: Female hair loss can be

caused by multiple factors, but the most common cause is an underlying genetic pre-disposition to hair loss known as androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss. Unlike the popular myth that you inherit hair loss from your mother’s father, women can inherit hair loss from either side of the family. This means that women can inherit hair loss from men and vice versa. It is much more common than people know. There are other factors that can cause hair loss or increase hair loss due to family history. They include stress, lifestyle, diet, thyroid disfunction, fungal infections, scalp parasites, and medications (most common hormone replacement and birth control pills).

2

Question: What do your clinics use to help women with thinning hair?

Answer: Depending on the reason for the loss, the treatment protocol will vary. Usually though for common female pattern hair loss the protocol is relatively similar. We a have a 9 month program that includes twice weekly office visits for cool light laser treatments for the scalp. This stimulates cell regeneration and is already approved to promote thicker hair. Our program also includes topical pharmaceuticals, hormone therapy balancing cream, nutritional supplementation, holistic hair care products, and topical scalp serums. This is most aggressive treatment that we offer, but it works. When you use everything together the way that our program does, you are bound to get results.

3

Question: What advice would you give a woman who is dealing with this problem?

Answer: Find the source of the problem as quickly as possible and treat that problem. Don’t try to treat it yourself because it wastes time that could be spent growing hair back. I obviously would recommend to call us and then come in for a consultation. Worst case scenario, you can stop the progression of the loss. Best case, we can dramatically reverse your hair loss and regrow hair. We have had numerous cases where a woman was wearing a wig or extensions when they started the treatment. Then 9 months later they were able to remove their wig permanently or stop getting extensions because their hair had gained so much volume and density.

Question: Is there hope for women with thinning hair? How do you control it?

Answer: There certainly is. There are

so many tools that can be used to control female hair loss and reverse it in many cases. Once you have established the reason for the hair loss and it can be treated with a variety of methods. Unfortunately, most general physicians simply don’t have the time or the knowledge to get a full understanding of why a woman is losing her hair. The female patient is then left combing the internet for solutions that rarely leads to any real answer.

5

Question: How you do know what is causing your hair loss? Answer: A simple patient history

is the easiest way. Many women have blood tests for hormonal issues, thyroid dysfunction, iron levels, and vitamin D deficiency. Unfortunately this rarely produces any other cause other than normal pattern hair loss. At our clinics we use a video microscope to analyze the condition of the scalp at 50x magnification. At this level we can tell if the client has loss due to stress, diet, infection of the hair follicle, or simple hormonally related hair loss.

6

Question: Is there maintenance required?

Answer: 99% yes. I usually tell people it’s like brushing your teeth. If you don’t brush them and go to the dentist, your teeth will rot and fall out. The same goes for your hair. If you have a genetic hair loss problem, you have two options; oneyou can treat the problem long term, or two- let your hair fall out and go bald. Clearly our clients choose hair.

editor's letter

PERHAPS THE GREATEST THING about living in the East Valley is just how easy the living is here. Between the things to do, places to eat and sites to see, we’re not complaining—except when it comes to this weather. Maybe the second-best thing about living in the East Valley is just how easy it is to escape. Drive two hours north and you’ll run into cooler temperatures and greener scenery. Drive six hours west and you’ll run into the beach vibe of the Pacific Ocean. Drive four hours south and you’ll have an affordable international vacation. Basically, the East Valley is a vacation “hub.” All you have to do is fill up your tank and go! Escaping every once in a while is essential to staying sane. When I drove to Sedona’s Amara Resort & Spa for this month’s 6 Hour Drive, it was less than 24 hours until I felt refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on the real world again. You can experience Northern Arizona, too, with our feature, “The Great Up North.” Only have a day or three-day weekend to experience everything our beautiful state has to offer? Associate Editor Breanne DeMore broke down just what you can experience in your short amount of time. And trust me—even the one day trip is worth it. And if leaving town just isn’t in the cards for you this month, there’s plenty of fun to be had right

here in the E.V. Our “Best of the East Valley” feature breaks down some of the best businesses, activities and amenities our area has to offer. Really, it’s no wonder why our community lands at the top of “best of” lists several times a year. (Yeah, we’re cocky about it, but can you blame us?) Escape is the theme of the issue this month. Upfront 480 subject Monalou Callery knows something about that—and has helped other women do the same. Trapped in an abusive relationship for years, Callery made her escape and eventually created Cup O’Karma coffee in Mesa, and now in Chandler. Cup O’Karma offers job training and sanctuary to victims of domestic violence, empowering them among a community of women who have been there. I cannot fathom the kind of courage it takes to escape from that sort of atmosphere. But no matter how you think about it, getting away is always a positive thing, whether you choose to come back or not. Escape shows you another way to live for a moment and breaks up the monotony of everyday life. I sincerely hope you find your escape in this issue,

CUP O’KARMA EXPANDS TO CHANDLER TO OFFER COFFEE, NEW LIFE TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVORS BY ALEXA D’ANGELO PHOTOS BY TIM SEALY

Monalou Callery didn’t know she married a monster until it was too late. The man that committed his life to her instead began to abuse her to the point where she lost consciousness—to the point where she feared for her life. She stayed with him. She was afraid to leave. He was a connected man in her hometown in Massachusetts. She had three daughters with him, and by the time she left for good, they were 7, 5 and 3 years old. Callery could have let this destroy her life, but instead she rebuilt from the ground up, moved to Arizona and created the National Advocacy and Training Network (NATN), Support, Education, Empowerment and Directions (SEEDs) and Cup O’ Karma: Community Café for a Cause, all to support domestic violence victims and their families.

BELOW: Cup O' Karma's CHandler branch is located inside Chandler Public Library.

“I wanted to create some sort of advocacy for women,” Callery says. “I wanted to help them come to terms with their abuse and educate and support them in a way that I didn’t have when I was going through it.” Callery founded NATN in 2002 to address the health, safety, economic and social justice issues related to domestic violence. SEEDs provides housing to victims of domestic violence, with four homes in the Valley dedicated to transitional housing for domestic violence survivors. Cup O’ Karma stemmed from SEEDs. When the women staying in one of the houses went through a 12-week business program, they got the idea to create a coffee shop where survivors who stayed in the SEEDs homes could work and earn money and job experience. “We used to meet during the 12-week program at a coffee house in Mesa, and when the man who owned it overheard us talking about getting our own coffee shop, he sold his to us for only a dollar,” she says. “That became our first location.” In the last year, Callery and crew have opened a new Cup O’ Karma coffee house inside the Chandler Public Library. The coffee shop serves up good karma, one cup at a time. “Over 2,000 people walk through the library a day,” Callery says. “A lot of people walk in here and we tell them about our program and they come back and make donations.” All of the baristas in the two coffee shop locations are survivors of abuse and are living in a SEEDs house, or have already completed the educational program. “A lot of women come back as mentors or house managers after they complete the program themselves,” she says. One of those women is Kathy Hess, who is now a full-time advocate. Hess says Callery helped save her life when she left her abusive husband. “He had found the SEEDs house,” Hess says. “And Monalou let me stay at her home until I felt safe again. We are now great friends. I don’t know where I would be without her.” 14

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

Callery says that all the women, like Hess, are encouraged to work at Cup O’ Karma, especially if they lack job skills in order to prepare them for future jobs. The public can donate via NATN’s website, natn-az.org, or by dropping off donations at one of the two Cup O’ Karma locations. One hundred percent of the profits made at the coffee shops go back to the victims of domestic violence. Monalou, who was at one point on welfare struggling to make ends meet, is now a successful business owner who has happily been with her boyfriend for 20 years, and has become a beacon of hope for the hopeless. “We’ve helped over a thousand women since our inception,” Callery says. “I just can’t believe that I went from being abused to helping those who have been abused. I want to pass my message of survival onto other survivors of domestic violence and show that if I can do it, so can they.” VLM

Who doesn’t love an evening at the theater? Whether you’re going to see a concert, Broadway show or comedy night, your arrival is an event in itself. Picture it: you enter the room with your favorite companion, find your way down the aisles toward the stage and take your seat for an evening that promises entertainment. You’ll want the best seats in the house for the line-up of performances coming up at Mesa Arts Center. August will bring entertainment in the form of concerts by the American jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding—who beat out Justin Bieber for Best New Artist at the 2011 Grammys—and the American Idol Live! Tour, which has previously featured Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson. Portland Cello Project’s show in November will crush classical music stereotypes as the indie group performs mixed genres that blur the musical lines and shake up your perception of what a stringed instrument can do. Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox hits the stage in December, bringing with them their uncanny ability to take a pop hit and twist it into a vintage-flavored songbook standard from the last century. Songs like Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love” and other pop songs get infused with a jazzy sound in the live performance. Lovers of Broadway can enjoy three hit shows making their way to Mesa. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical lands in November, Riverdance: The 20th Anniversary World Tour will have you Irish step dancing in January, and the classic Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in March already has us singing “Be Our Guest.” These shows, plus nearly 50 more, are waiting to entertain you this upcoming season. SKINCARE SURVIVAL HOW YOUR SKIN CAN BRAVE THE HEAT IN THESE SCORCHING SUMMER MONTHS BY CHRISTINA CALDWELL

Summer is here. That means something quite different in Arizona. While the rest of the country is embracing the sun, we retreat inside, binging on Netflix and cranking the AC down to 74 for some semblance of normalcy. While it might be hot outside, you don’t have to completely avoid the outdoors this summer. You might be tempted to burn your way to a killer tan, but our state’s penetrating UV rays can only lead to bad times—and bad skin—if precautions aren’t taken. These summer skincare tips will make sure your skin doesn’t become as dry and damaged as the Sonoran Desert. Pick a sunscreen you can stick to

You can do your part to stave off aging as long as possible by wearing sunscreen on your face. Every single day. SPF 30 or higher. Wearing sunscreen every day might sound like a horror story if you’re only used to the bargain bin all-purpose sunscreen from your childhood, but there are alternatives that aren’t a white, tacky mess. Many Asian sunscreens, for example, are light, dry easily and leave zero white cast, which is perfect for applying under makeup. Products like Biore’s Sarasara UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence Sunscreen SPF50+ PA+++ (Yes, that’s its real name.) feel like next to nothing on the skin and actually make a great makeup primer. Good domestic alternatives that, unfortunately, might leave a white cast include Elta MD UV Physical SPF 41, Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunblock Lotion SPF 60+ and Shiseido FT The Sun Screen Mild SPF 50+ PA+++. Wearing sunscreen prevents age spots, the darkening of old acne scars and aging. So basically it’s the ultimate skincare product the whole year ‘round. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

Dry skin looks older, greyer and lacks a healthy glow. On top of drinking a lot of water, make a point to moisturize your entire body, focusing on your face, neck, hands and feet.

20

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

WEARING SUNSCREEN PREVENTS AGE SPOTS, THE DARKENING OF OLD ACNE SCARS AND AGING. SO BASICALLY IT’S THE ULTIMATE SKINCARE PRODUCT THE WHOLE YEAR ‘ROUND. The summer dryness will suck any natural moisture out of your skin, so be prepared to walk around with a travel-sized bottle of lotion in your purse to re-moisturize after washing your hands, or when you just feel dry. If you are worried about moisturizer breaking out your skin, there are ways to limit that risk by looking up the product or entering its ingredients into cosdna.com. You might even find a common denominator ingredient in all of the products that have broken your skin out in the past, so you’ll know to avoid that ingredient in the future. Good overnight moisturizers for parched skin include Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream and Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream, but be sure to do your research if you’re sensitive, no matter what the product promises.

Cabinets, Countertops and Floor Covering Design, Manufacture, Install Residential and Commercial Remodel

Fake it, don’t bake it

Accidental tans and occasional tanning a few times a year won’t ruin your skin forever, but as a principle, you should fake it as much as you can. If you feel like you look too pale for summer (and don’t forget that pale can often be pretty!), investing in solid sunless tanners like Xen-Tan, SUN Laboratories or St. Tropez products might be worth it to you. They’ll run you around $20 to $30 per bottle, but they’re heavily concentrated and can be diluted with the moisturizer of your choice. If you’re afraid of streaks, gradual tanning lotions like Jergens Natural Glow or its store brand equivalent are quick, subtle ways to get color without the mess. Just remember to wash your hands after use! If all else fails, put your skin in the hands of a professional. Airbrush tanning gets more popular by the year. Look up Yelp reviews to find the best airbrush tanning salon in your area. VLM

SHE’S GOT Soul JENNIFER BOONLORN’S SOUL CARRIER HANDBAG LINE USES FASHION FOR A CAUSE BY ALEXA D’ANGELO

Jennifer Boonlorn relates to the kids at Phoenix Crisis Nursery in a way only certain people can understand. When the Arcadia resident was 21, she lost both her parents in a fatal car accident. “One time when I was volunteering at the Crisis Nursery around Christmas, one of the kids asked me if Santa was bringing me a mom,” Boonlorn says. “It just broke my heart and I knew I had to give back to them somehow.” Now Boonlorn is using her brand of unique handcrafted leather handbags, Soul Carrier, to give back to kids who have lost their parents in some way, just like she did. Boonlorn is using a Kickstarter campaign to boost her Soul Carrier brand for her third round of bags, Conscious Intentions, and will donate 25 percent of the fund-raiser's proceeds when it reaches its $10,000 goal to Crisis Nursery. “Little kids don’t need leather bags,” Boonlorn laughs. “I would love to do a one-for-one kind of thing, but it just isn’t what they need. So I decided I would donate a portion of the proceeds to these kids.” The proceeds from the first 25 bags from the Conscious Intentions line will directly fund Crisis Nursery's preschool graduation. Boonlorn has been designing handbags for three years, since she returned home to Phoenix after a stint in New York working 22

with big-name brands. Soul Carrier has released two collections, one made of a rug material and the other, Authentic Change, made of real leather from Leon, Mexico. Her first two collections under Soul Carrier got her started, but she wants this collection to really get her brand off the ground. “I just want to get this out to the world,” Boonlorn says. “The bags have such an authentic message to be true to yourself and to bring out the best qualities in a person that I think everyone needs to hear at some point.” Boonlorn named the bags in her previous collection after her friends and family. With this collection, she decided to name the bags after qualities she sees in those closest to her. “The Illumination Clutch was named after my good friend, Katie, who is just a bright light in the world,” Boonlorn says. “I wanted the name to reflect all of her wonderful light qualities and give a value or principle to show people that they too can be authentic.” Boonlorn says she realized that her journey following the death of her parents had truly come full circle one day when volunteering at Crisis Nursery. “There is a hospital on the same campus as Crisis Nursery, and it turns out that it is the same hospital my parents were transported to after the accident,” Boonlorn says. “It completes the circle. It

really confirms for me that this is what I am supposed to be doing with my life. The Kickstarter campaign launched June 16 and will continue for one month. This campaign is different than others because you can buy the bags from the Conscious Intentions collection directly through the Kickstarter. Boonlorn says the bags range from $130 and up, but there are also lower-priced items like phone cases and coin purses that people can buy and still support soul carrier. YOGA 101 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR FIRST YOGA CLASS BY JULIE LEMEROND

Want to try yoga but have no idea where to start? You aren’t alone. Yoga has permeated our culture and you can find hundreds of studios throughout town, but where do you begin? Looking at studio websites and seeing words you have never heard of before in the class descriptions can be at best confusing and at worst, downright frightening. Many studios offer the first class free or special two-week deals for a deeply discounted rate, giving you the opportunity to come often and try many different classes and teachers to find the right fit for you. Also check out Groupon or Living Social to see if a studio near you has a special deal to try. But first, here’s a breakdown of some of the most widely represented types of classes that you will see at a studio or gym. HATHA YOGA

This is an umbrella term for “regular yoga,” as practiced in the Western world. An emphasis on proper breathing along with moving into postures (asanas) is what you can expect from a class with this name. For newbies, look for classes that are labeled “gentle yoga,” or call the studio you are interested in to see which class they would recommend for a beginner. VINYASA/FLOW

Vinyasa means movement connected with breath, and this is a very popular style of yoga in studios today, as it’s a healthy workout coupled with the body-mind-spirit connection that yoga creates. These are usually geared toward students with some yoga knowledge. BIKRAM

This is one style of “hot yoga,” although there are similar styles also taught throughout the Valley. (Sumit’s, Floo-id and True Hot Yoga are just a few places to catch hot classes.) Show up heavily hydrated, scantily clad and be prepared to sweat. Studios can be heated to 108 degrees (plus humidity), so these classes are intense. Yet many people become quick converts if the practice resonates with them. The only way to know is to try!

24

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

YIN

This is a slow-paced class done completely on the floor, but don’t think it’s easy. Yin is designed to lengthen, loosen and strengthen the connective tissues in your body, all while keeping your mind in check in the process. Poses are held for several minutes at a time. RESTORATIVE

This is another slow-paced class done completely on the floor, although this one adds some plush props for comfort. Think blankets, bolsters and blocks to help ease you into comfortable poses held for several minutes at a time. YOGA NIDRA

Nidra means sleep, and Yoga Nidra is a sleep-based meditation done lying on the back. Peel away the layers of stress, anxiety and tension that we all carry around in our daily lives as you are guided through a series of breath- and body-awareness techniques, all designed to drop you into a space of sweet surrender. Above all, be patient and kind with yourself as you begin your yoga journey, and know that you are not going to be a pro at this right off the bat. It takes time to learn to breathe properly, to get to know the various poses and to find the teachers and styles that resonate with you. VLM

HOW TO SPEND YOUR LIMITED TIME IN NORTHERN ARIZONA BY BREANNE DEMORE

It doesn’t matter how much we complain. The heat is here and it is here to stay—at least until October. Luckily, the northern half of our lovely state doesn’t experience the sun’s wrath as much as we do down here in the Valley. Cooler weather and plenty of fun activities for everyone in the family are just a few hours’ drive away, so we broke down our favorite attractions in Northern Arizona by how much time you have. Whether you can only get away for a day trip or if you’re able to take a three-day weekend, we have your great escape all planned out.

SLIDE ROCK STATE PARK

SEDONA

Distance from the East Valley: 2 hours and 27 minutes

Distance from the East Valley: 2 hours and 18 minutes

PHOTO COURTESY ARIZONA OFFICE OF TOURISM

An iconic Arizona destination, Slide Rock State Park has been drawing people from all over the country for decades. Whether you’re an East Valley parent looking for a cool excursion to break up the backyard pool routine for your kids or a young couple looking for a cooler weather escape from the Valley, Slide Rock offers a fun and relaxing adventure. A natural water slide formed by the slippery bed of Oak Creek, this watering hole is a draw for its surrounding red rocks, cool weather and refreshing water. Wade in the running water, or for more of a thrill, take a turn sliding down the rocks. Ideal for kids and adults, this state park also offers a couple of very short hiking trails for those that want to explore the area a bit more. Due to the popularity, we recommend heading up there early in the morning with a packed picnic, spending the late morning exploring and adventuring, enjoying the picnic waterside on the red rocks and then heading back home after a full day of Arizona nature.

PHOTO COURTESY SEDONA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & TOURISM BUREAU

The town of Sedona itself might be quaint, but the surrounding red rocks are anything but. Larger than life with some of the most vibrant colors found in nature, the rock formations and sunsets found in and just outside of Sedona are simply breathtaking. However, there is much more to Sedona than just its looks. Those looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of the greater Phoenix area will find refuge in the relaxation and rejuvenation that spas and natural spots around town offer. Outdoorsmen and women will love the plentiful hiking and mountain biking tails. Those looking to expand their knowledge of Arizona wine country can please their palates in vineyard tasting rooms or by hopping on the “Grape Train Escape” on the Verde Canyon Railroad. Families will also find refuge in Sedona. Little kids will enjoy playing outside at the parks, riding the railroad tours and the Blazin’ M Ranch Western Dinner Theatre. Offroad jeep riding, horseback riding and kayaking are also readily available for the more adventurous older kids.

GRAND CANYON I

PHOTO COURTESY ARIZONA OFFICE OF TOURISM

Distance from the East Valley: 3 hours and 41 minutes For thousands of years, the Colorado River has wound its way through the top of our state and eroded rock into an enormous, stunning canyon. The Grand Canyon stretches 277 miles from end to end and is more than a mile deep. There is no denying that our state’s top tourist attraction is magnificent, and although practically every view of it is gorgeous, there is certainly more to do than just stare. The more adventurous types can find lots to do at the canyon. From hiking or backpacking down to the base and back, camping at Havasupai Falls and even white river rafting, brave explorers will definitely find excitement at the Grand Canyon. Those travelers looking for a more relaxed experience can take some easier hikes or step out on the Skywalk on the West Rim. Helicopter or airplane tours allow views from high above the canyon, while a leisurely guided tour around the rim, either on foot, bike or welcoming mule, will give you a better understanding of this destination. Kids from 4 to 14 can participate in the Grand Canyon National Park Junior Ranger Program and show off their knowledge of the canyon to their friends when they get back.

FLAGSTAFF I

Distance from the East Valley: 2 hours and 27 minutes The Northern Arizona hub is home to Northern Arizona University, Lowell Observatory and the historic Route 66, but today brewing—both beer and coffee—is a big part of Flagstaff’s identity. Hop aboard the Alpine Pedaler and pedal your way through a threebrewery tour along the Flagstaff-Grand Canyon Ale Trail. Breweries that are making a name for themselves include Mother Road Brewing Company, Dark Sky Brewing and Beaver Street Brewing Company. You may need to wake up again after a few beers, so we suggest you check out the local coffee scene. It may be easy to go corporate here, but we recommend staying local. Flagstaff has several local coffee shops that use freshly-roasted beans—some of them even roasting their own. Families and those looking for a bit more of a relaxed escape will still find themselves happily enjoying Flagstaff. From the Museum of Northern Arizona to the Riordan Mansion State Historic Park, and from a scenic chairlift ride at Arizona Snowbowl to a picnic lunch amidst the wildflowers at The Arboretum at Flagstaff, there is something for everyone to enjoy both indoors and out. For those fascinated by science, a tour of the Lowell Observatory is definitely a treat. Combine that with a short 45 minute drive over to Meteor Crater and your space-lover will be in, well... heaven!

3days ANTELOPE CANYON

PHOTO COURTESY ARIZONA OFFICE OF TOURISM

Distance from the East Valley: 4 hours and 32 minutes Located on the Navajo reservation, Antelope Canyon is a Mecca for photographers and lovers of natural masterpieces. A slot canyon, this wonder includes two separate sections—Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon. Formed due to the erosion of Navajo sandstone from flash flooding, the passageways and hard edges have been smoothed away from the speed of the water, creating the flowing, liquid-like look of the canyon walls. Accessible only by tour, the summer months provide the best light and brightest colors in this canyon. The fantastical colors are due to the different angles of sunlight streaming through the top of the canyon, so the recommended best time to tour is the early afternoon when the sun is high in the sky. A bit of a drive and off the beaten path, this excursion is easy to push off on your to-do list, but it is certainly an unforgettable experience. Truly jaw-dropping, this stop is great for those wishing to appreciate some completely natural beauty.

MONUMENT VALLEY NAVAJO TRIBAL PARK I

PHOTO COURTESY ARIZONA OFFICE OF TOURISM

Distance from the East Valley: 4 hours and 58 minutes Spanning the Arizona/Utah border, Monument Valley consists of sandstone mesas and towers that jut up to the sky, some as tall as 1,000 feet. The park is known for the stunning colors and shadows that the sunlight plays off the rock formations. Eroded by wind and water, the monuments we admire today have taken thousands and thousands of years to form and have long been a favorite scene for photographers and filmmakers. Although a 17-mile dirt road tour will give you an idea of the attraction. We recommend spending a night

at this landmark, particularly at The View Hotel, where each room has its own patio overlooking the Valley. Spend time on your patio watching the sun set and the shadows of the rock formations grow longer and longer while taking in all the changing colors of the sky and sand. Treat yourself to a sunrise show as well and compare how the two differ. Once you’ve taken in all the natural beauty of Monument Valley, Four Corners is nearby and a mustsee for every Arizonan. VLM

TOP E.V. BUSINESSES THAT MAKE OUR COMMUNITY SHINE BY VALLEY LIFESTYLES STAFF

The East Valley is one of the greatest places to live if you’re in the grand ‘ole U-S-A. Obviously we’re a bit biased here, but Gilbert, Chandler and Mesa consistently land on “best places to live lists,” so you can’t blame us for being a bit cocky about it. And we have some seriously amazing businesses here. When you’re in one of the best communities, having one of the best businesses makes you among the elite of the elite. So which businesses are the cream of the crop? The ones below, of course!

PLA Y FATCATS There’s a new cat in town, and he’s super duper fun. It might be hard to entertain the kiddos, but at Gilbert’s recently-opened FatCats, housed inside a former grocery store on Greenfield and Baseline roads, you can find gobs of indoor fun in one place, from a movie theater to a bowling alley. You can easily spend an entire day or more inside FatCats without getting bored, and that goes for the whole family. Want to catch a movie while the kids run off to play in the arcade, glow golf or bowling areas? The facility’s Recline-N-Dine movie theater lives up to its name with reclining seats and a full menu of fun, tasty food (not just snacks!), showing Hollywood’s latest and greatest from mornings to late nights. “Our goal is to give you an experience that will bring you back,” says Trevor Cannon, marketing coordinator at the Utah-based FatCats. “[People] have so much fun that they don’t want to leave. It’s all under one roof, so they don’t have to go anywhere else.” And really, you can’t ask for much more during the blazing summer. FatCat’s state-of-the-art facility (and of course, plentiful air conditioning) welcomes newcomers with open arms. 4321 E. Baseline Rd., Gilbert, (480) 498-3325, fatcatsfun.com

TOPGOLF Even if golf isn’t your thing, Topgolf will change your mind. Think of it as cosmic bowling, except with golf instead. The threefloor, 34 bay complex is more than just golf, too. With truly delicious food, a full bar and even more games inside, this place keeps the whole family entertained—even in 100 degree temps! If you think you can’t stand the heat, think again. Outdoor misting fans keep temperatures down and spirits high. 1689 S. Santan Pkwy., Gilbert, (480) 240-1282, topgolf.com

SANTAN VILLAGE Yeah, we know this one is kind of cheating, but SanTan Village really is Gilbert’s city center to the east. With dining, entertainment and shopping options, it’s really hard to be bored at SanTan Village. We’re even willing to brave the heat to find shopping sanctuary in boutiques like Apricot Lane, or have an air-conditioned otherworldly adventure at Harkins Theatres’ SanTan Village 16. 2218 E. Williams Field Rd., Gilbert, (480) 282-9500, shopsantanvillage.com

DINE THE LIVING ROOM There are a lot of pretenders in the wine bar ‘biz, but The Living Room is the real deal. The ornately-decorated space is true to its name with cozy couches and a warm, inviting feel. With a menu of sushi, salads, sandwiches, pizza and bruschetta, there’s something to accommodate all taste buds, whether you’re a red or white fan. And if wine just isn’t your thing, their killer cocktails like the fruity “skinny” blueberry lemon drop and rave-worthy peach smashed will convert you into a regular at The Living Room. 2475 W. Queen Creek Rd., Chandler, (480) 855-2848, livingroomwinebar.com

QUEEN CREEK OLIVE MILL The Queen Creek Olive Mill is so much more than just olive oil—though their EVOO is killer. With live music and food truck events, tastings, holiday celebrations, local agriculture, shopping and an amazing eatery, Queen Creek Olive Mill is a mini-vacation right here in the East Valley. 25062 S. Meridian Rd., Queen Creek, (480) 888-9290, queencreekolivemill.com

CORNISH PASTY It doesn’t get anymore wholesome than Cornish Pasty. On a cold (or well air-conditioned) day, head to Cornish Pasty to warm your bones. The darklydecorated, homey spot serves up deeply delicious pastries filled with potatoes, meat, and just about anything else you can imagine. Choose from their dozens of options and prepare to change your mind about what English cooking can be. 1941 W. Guadalupe Rd., Mesa, (480) 838-3586; 960 W. University Rd., Suite 103, Tempe, (480) 894-6261, cornishpastyco.com

THRIVE! ACAI BOWLS You want a cold treat, but you don’t want the calories of ice cream and you don’t want all of the refined sugar that comes in frozen yogurt. Thrive! has you covered with protein-rich, fiber-full and all-natural acai bowls. Acai berries are pureed into pools of heaven with added protein powder and toppings. It’s just the healthy snack that will cool down your summer without weighing you down, too. 1686 N. Higley Rd., Suite105, Gilbert, (480) 654-5959; 1726 E. LIBERTY MARKET Built in a repurposed market in Downtown Gilbert, Liberty Market has become the central meeting point for all of Gilbert. With breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and coffee offerings, Liberty Market is truly a little bit of everything you could want—and they do it all so well. Joe Johnston, the Gilbertborn powerhouse behind the market, Joe’s Real BBQ, Joe’s Farm Grill and community development Agritopia, truly outdid himself with this one. Johnston managed to make Downtown Gilbert, once a deserted retail center, completely cool again. New restaurants and retail followed his lead, settling in the area. We can’t wait to see what he plans next for Gilbert. 230 N. Gilbert Rd., Gilbert, (480) 892-1900, libertymarket.com

MASSAGE HEIGHTS Just because massages are a luxury doesn’t mean they have to come at a luxury price or only happen once in a blue moon. Gilbert’s Massage Heights, located directly across the street from Dana Point, is a friendly face offering deep relaxation at an affordable price. Just stop by the chain’s Gilbert “retreat” to get an idea of what relaxation really can be. “The philosophy behind Massage Heights is to promote a healthy lifestyle by providing professional, affordable, convenient, therapeutic massage services,” says retreat director Tonya Mull. “The massage experience is all about catering to our guests’ needs. We are very focused on educating our guest on the benefits of massage and we make an effort to build a relationship with our guests.” And that kind of relaxation doesn’t take a lot of planning when it comes to the expert staff at Massage Heights. Mull says often massage therapists are available the same day, so whether you just want to indulge in a feel-good 90-minute Swedish massage or you’ve had it with your back pain and need some deep tissue work, Massage Heights will accommodate all experiences. Take your massage experience to the next level with add-ons like a revitalizing facial massage or reviving foot scrub. Want some extra pampering? Massage Heights also offers facials personalized to your skincare concerns, from acne to aging, dull skin to irritation. 3425 E. Baseline Rd., Suite 107, Gilbert, (480) 6327529, massageheights.com

You don’t just let anyone take scissors to your hair, but lately you’ve noticed that your regular stylist has been in a rut. That means it’s time to find a fresh set of eyes and someone who has passion for your particular head of hair. To say Francis Tesmer, co-owner and president of Rolf’s Salon, has a passion for hair is a complete understatement. Tesmer can wax poetic about her clients, with her team’s only objective being to make you look even more stunning than when you first came in. So what sets Rolf’s apart from the pack? First and foremost, Tesmer says, Rolf’s stylists are trained to listen. A typical stylist might hear what you have to say about your hair and do their own thing, but Rolf’s stylists will listen to what you want and execute. They’ll offer up fresh ideas with each new service, Joanna says, but will also offer consistency with each cut or color.

CARE

“The number one question that our hairdressers are trained to ask is ‘What would you like your hair to say about you?’” Tesmer says. “For every single client that walks through our door, whether they’ve been there a million times or this is our first time, we have a 15 minute consultation with them every single time so that we know exactly what the client wants.” Rolf’s Euro Salon offers “smart luxury,” starting at $40 a cut for women, $30 for men and $20 for children. Now, how do you feel about going back to ‘ole Budget Cuts? 1822 S. Val Vista Dr., Mesa, (480) 491-7900, rolfssalon.com

FERTILITY TREATMENT CENTER For couples having trouble getting pregnant, conceiving can be a long and stressful road. Luckily, an amazing facility to help with the struggles and anxiety is located right here in the East Valley, and they want nothing more than to help you make a family. Tempe’s Fertility Treatment Center provides high-quality infertility treatments in a comfortable atmosphere. With their passion and personal care, FTC has accomplished a high pregnancy success rate, which has made patients from neighboring states (and even countries!) take notice, says Natalie Qasawadish, outreach services coordinator at FTC. FTC is there for its patients when they need it the most. The facility is open weekend mornings and every holiday, with the exception of Christmas Day. The facility does not shut down for physician vacations or other occasions, so there will always be someone to assist you, Qasawadish says. Dr. H. Randall Craig and his staff are dedicated to your care, from evaluation to diagnosis, treatment to embryo and egg donations, which has landed him on many “best doctors” lists, but as your family grows, FTC is also rewarded. “The most satisfying part of working at FTC is seeing and hearing a patient talk about being pregnant or having just delivered,” Qasawadish says. “It gives me such satisfaction to know they were successful at something that was a challenge for them and that we at FTC were able to assist in that process. 2155 E. HAPPY PETS PALACE Mesa’s Happy Pets Palace is a little slice of doggy heaven, and it’s easy to see why it’s the top pet boarding and doggy daycare in the East Valley. In fact, you can see for yourself right now! Head to happypetspalace.com to take a look at the facility’s live webcams, where you can catch real-life doggy clients romping around and relaxing in the company of their canine friends. “People have said we should have a reality show,” laughs owner Linda Huss, who opened the facility just last August. And the business is expanding rapidly. Already Huss is looking into opening another facility in the East Valley with an anticipated 2016 opening. Besides the peace of mind that comes with seeing your pet having fun while you’re away, Happy Pets Palace offers a clean, spacious facility equipped with air conditioning and private villas for your pets to escape from the hubbub, if they choose. And prices are all-inclusive. Doggy daycare and boarding includes playground time, swimming pools, a story hour as read to them by a human, human and doggy interaction and more.

Happy Pets Palace also offers in-home dog sitting and a dog wash to clean those paws. Plus, every Wednesday is puppy socializing day, where puppies up to 1 year old can learn to play well with others at the facility. There is a four-hour screening process for each pup that comes into Happy Pets Palace’s care. Dogs must play well with others, be up to date on all shots and be neutered or spayed. While it might seem rigorous, this process ensures Happy Pets Palace is a safe place for all pets, including yours. Healthy pets are happy pets, as evidenced by the puppy smiles on webcam. 1918 E. FELICIA ROMERO’S FIT METHOD Felicia Romero is Gilbert born and bred, and she has made her hometown proud over the years, competing in fitness competitions and bringing a healthy lifestyle to the masses when she opened her fitness studio, Felicia Romero’s Fit Method on Warner and Gilbert roads. Romero might be your friendly neighborhood hard body, but that’s no reason to be intimidated. The upbeat, positive trainer and entrepreneur just wants you to achieve the very best you, which is the Fit Method difference, she says. “The reason why I opened Fit Method is because I wanted a place that was safe for everybody—where they could come in and not be judged, not be prepared, and take all different kinds of classes ranging from high intensity, all the way down to yoga,” Romero says. Romero is well aware that people tend to get bored with the same old fitness routine, and she herself likes to switch it up from time to time, too, so Fit Method has four kinds of classes— Soul Spin, which incorporates music, weights and cardio; Group Interval Training, which uses a series of slam balls, sand bells and more to focus on the core; TRX Express, which uses TRX suspension training to rip your body into shape

in a 30 minute workout; and Power Yoga for max calorie burning and flexibility. Trainers at Fit Method, like Romero, also compete in fitness competitions. While the same isn’t expected of you, after a few months at Fit Method, you might just be in the shape to do so. VLM 263 E. Warner Rd., Gilbert, (844) 269-5354, frfitmethod.com

6 hour drive

OUR DESTINATION VACATION, NO MORE THAN 6 HOURS FROM THE VALLEY

air UP there THE

BY CHRISTINA CALDWELL

Sedona’s Amara Resort offers a spiritual reprieve from Valley temps I’m not the spiritual type. I like to think I’m grounded in reality, but driving through Sedona’s Red Rock Scenic Byway, you can’t help but be overwhelmed by its beauty. It’s easy to see how someone would consider the steep, stunning red rocks a very special, and even spiritual, place. Really, there’s nowhere else like it.

6 hour drive Sedona is rife with New Age tourism, and to some extent, Amara Resort & Spa caters to those tastes, but tones it down enough to be just my style. Located just down the hill from Downtown Sedona, Amara is in the middle of it all while also being a retreat from the hubbub of the nightlife, dining and tourist-rich center just a three minute walk away. Just over a two hour drive from the East Valley, my boyfriend, Andrew, and I both opted for the 60-minute, aromatheraputic Rain Dance massage before checking into the hotel. The service spoke volumes about where we just arrived. Booking the massage I was a bit nervous. It boasted a massage delivered with “a rhythmic movement, dancing you into tranquility. Were there going to be rain sticks involved, and could I keep a straight face while all this was going on? But the Rain Dance massage was serious business. My uber-professional massage therapist put me right at ease with her calming voice and explanations of each step of the massage, as rosemary, lavender and sage oils were incorporated into the heavenly full-body massage. Just one hour into arriving, I was already getting into the Sedona state of mind. Practically floating, it was time to check into our room.

46

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

Strolling into the lobby during check-in time is an immediate oasis. The quirkily-decorated, Native-inspired interior tells the age-old story of Sedona and its roots, yet is shockingly modern. Everything about the design was beautifully “off” with mixed fabrics and bright colors paired with natural elements and muted tones. I took notes for my own home as the staff offered Andrew and I a complimentary glass of wine. What’s the Hopi word for “heck yes?” With a massage and a glass of unexpected red wine under my belt, I was feeling pretty amazing. We walked up to our Creekside Studio Spa Suite not knowing exactly what to expect, but the space blew our minds. It was 670 square feet of luxury, complete with a terrace and a fully-furnished, large patio, a jetted soak tub, a large, comfortable, clean bed and more. Still crazy about the interior design, I took photos in hopes of recreating some of the Native-inspired wall dressings, then I took two baths in 12 hours. “It’s like bathing in a babbling brook!” I told Andrew. Easily the highlight of our trip, though, was a simple walk down to the lobby. SaltRock Southwest Kitchen is located just behind the lobby and somehow incorporates the “feel” of Amara into its food. It was also one of the best meals of my life.

The stunning nine-course tasting menu prepared for us was one experiment in culinary creativity after another. Chef Massimo de Francesca and his sous chefs have created Amara on a plate, with native Sedona ingredients and a southwestern flair that needs to be tasted to be believed. Stand-out dishes included the grilled corn appetizer, which popped with garlic, lime, cotija cheese, a spicy aoili and chopped corn nuts, and the deviled eggs, which ain’t your momma’s Thanksgiving specialty. The elevated plate of eggs was complemented with grain mustard, pasilla-maple syrup and a bacon onion marmalade that was sweet, savory and earthy. The next morning I ended our mini-trip with a lone yoga session on the patio, with the beautiful sound of Oak Creek and waking birds chiming in the background. I might not be the spiritual type, but Sedona and Amara Resort left me feeling wonderfully Zen. Is this what energy balancing is all about? Because if so, I’m all about it. VLM

THE BEER RESEARCH INSTITUTE COMBINES DECADENT HOUSE-MADE FOOD AND BREWS BY JASMINE KEMPER PHOTOS BY SAM NALVEN

The moment you walk into the Beer Research Institute in Mesa you’ll never want to leave. If their craft beers aren’t enough to draw you in, the flavors in their made-from-scratch food will have you setting up camp. Beer Research Institute only opened this past November, but the brew pub has already created a name for itself by serving up a unique menu of Southwestern-inspired flavors and pairing them with their signature brews. Executive chef Melissa Bracken has 17 years of restaurant experience under her belt. She started at the B.R.I in February and made her way to executive chef in early March. Her determination is proof that it’s not where you train that makes you a great chef, but having a passion and love for food. “I never went to culinary school, but everything I’ve done has been in the restaurant industry,” VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

LEFT: Pick from a variety of Beer Research Institute's brews as seen on their chalkboard. LOWER LEFT: The no-frills attitude of B.R.I. is shown in their brass knuckle and beaker beer flight. OPPOSITE: The Spanglish, an egg-and-bacon sammie taken in the next level, is a best seller at B.R.I.

Bracken says. “I have worked under a whole bunch of different chefs. I’ve lived in Colorado and worked at Wolfgang Puck’s Grand Café, so I got to work underneath him. That was fun.” Bracken moved to Arizona two years ago from chilly South Dakota, and before this worked with SanTan Brewing Company in Chandler. With a love for Mexican and Southwestern cuisine, it’s almost as if Bracken was made for the job. However, she doesn’t limit herself to one specialty and is always looking to add to her skills. “I would say my specialty is actually whatever I’m practicing at the time. I’m a perfectionist, so [whatever] I’m doing, I want to make it the best. That’s where the daily specials are really fun because then I get to be creative. Every day is something different,” Bracken says. The Beer Research Institute’s menu covers a wide variety, but every single day, Chef Bracken has the opportunity for creativity with the daily special. When we dropped in, she opted for a hefty meal with the bacon-wrapped grilled cheese and ham sando. This brilliant sandwich comes equipped with its own death warning: “This is NOT good for you. Please call your doctor and your insurance agent before placing order!” This elevated grilled cheese includes thicksliced ham, tomato, cheddar, Swiss, red onions and jalapeño cream cheese on a hoagie roll, all wrapped into a bed of bacon. A side salad tossed in house-made ranch evens out the heaviness of the sandwich.

Another decadent sandwich is the Spanglish, served with house-cut French fries—a best-seller at the Beer Research Institute. Served on their signature Hawaiian bread, the Spanglish has lettuce, tomato, provolone and chipotle mayo and an over easy egg. What sets it apart is what Bracken calls “meat candy,” a Sriracha-candied bacon that adds just the right amount of sweet and spicy. “We put a farm fresh over easy egg on the top so when the yolk breaks into that meat candy it makes for a really awesome sauce,” Bracken says. To satisfy your sweet tooth, Bracken utilized her resources to concoct their boozy bread pudding with “caram-ale.” “It’s made with our sweet Hawaiian bread and our vanilla porter. The whipped cream is a housemade mocha whip, so it’s got coffee and cocoa and also a little bit of our vanilla porter as well. The caramel is also house-made with some coffee and some of our wort from the vanilla porter,” Bracken says. She recommends pairing the pudding with BRI’s signature saison, Collaborazz, made with 200 pounds of fresh raspberries. The beer flight, perfect for sampling B.R.I.'s signature brews, is served in a brass knuckle, which is appropriate for the straight-forward attitude of the restaurant. They focus on handcrafted Belgian and West Coast-style ales, including their 480G IPA, Collaborazz, War Paint and the Lolli. With a laid back atmosphere and no TVs in sight, the Beer Research Institute wants to be a gathering place for people to come socialize while enjoying beer and food crafted by the best. VLM

STRAWBERRY RUM CAKE BY ALEXA D’ANGELO

Lisa Power has been baking as long as she can remember. “It’s in my blood,” Power jokes. “In the first grade, I remember showing people how to decorate with frosting.” Since 1975, Power helped her mom in her bakery making her famous rum cake. Today she owns her own business making rum cakes with her three daughters, including daughter Madison, who she calls her “right hand man.” The strawberry rum cake is the fan favorite, Power says. Fresh strawberries are sandwiched between two slices of fluffy yellow cake and topped with non-alcoholic rum custard. Power says that she, Madison and her husband always slice the strawberries by hand, taking extra care to make sure only the best end up in the cake. This rum cake is the perfect sweet treat for summer. The secret to these delicious cakes is to quick-freeze them to keep all the flavor in, Power says. Lisa’s Rum Cake has been in business since 2009 and has built up a base of about 7,000 customers, but Lisa has been baking for 41 years this November. Her expertise shows in each delectable cake she cooks up, making it hard to pick just one. Lucky for those who are indecisive, Lisa’s Rum Cake also has “cake cuts,” which are individual slices of cake created by Madison. You can pick multiple flavors of cake cuts to try, but definitely make sure the strawberry rum is one of them. VLM

IN SEASON PEACHES

PEACHES BY JASMINE KEMPER

As far back as 10th century B.C., peaches were the preferred fruits of Chinese emperors, and it’s easy to see why. Originating from China, peaches got their scientific name, prunus persica, when they traveled to Persia along the Silk Road, where they gained popularity as the “Persian apple”. The peach tree is even considered the “tree of life” in China, and peaches symbolize unity and immortality. These fuzzy fruits pack a ton of health benefits that are sure to get you through a hot summer day. They are a good source of vitamins A, B and C, and one peach has about 37 calories, so it’s a sweet treat without the worry of packing on pounds. They’re also loaded with potassium, fluoride and iron to help with red blood cell formation, stronger teeth and a healthy blood pressure. Lucky for you, peaches are a great addition to almost any dish—sweet and savory alike! They can spruce up a salad or be grilled alongside pork for a delicious meal. Whether you choose to bake them into a pie, slice them into salsa or eat them whole, peaches bring a sweetness to summer that you can’t get any other time of the year. VLM

FINAL THOUGHTS

OUTER SHELL, INNER HEALING BY CHRISTINA CALDWELL

Some people think I’m shallow, and I can see why. I spend an unmentionable amount of money on clothes, makeup and skincare. I like to attempt to look my best every day, and I have no problem waking up extra early to make that happen. I don’t have kids or a hefty mortgage, so it’s far from irresponsible. Right now the only person I’m caring for is myself, so I’m going to make the best of that freedom while I have it. It all started the summer before my freshman year of high school when I saw the movie “Legally Blonde.” As an awkward tween that was valued more by my perceived intelligence rather than my looks (chubby cheeks, ill-fitting clothes and superstraight bangs might have had something to do with it), the core of the movie’s message struck a chord with me—you can be smart and dress cute. There’s no need to choose if you have an interest in both, which I did. My mom took me to the mall that afternoon and I bought a pair of pink capris that I thought were very “Legally Blonde.” The makeup lessons she inadvertently gave me as a child when I followed her around as she performed her morning routine helped, too. For the first time since puberty I felt good about myself. Entering high school I had a newfound confidence. In short, caring for myself turned me into the confident, happy woman I always wanted to be. I didn’t see anything wrong with that, but it seemed like other people did. People saw it as a value judgment. If I spent all of this time and money to be dressed to the nines, surely the same is expected of them, right? Absolutely wrong. This is what I like doing for me, but I find women in sweatpants, with no makeup and messy 64

VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

hair equally beautiful. It’s really all about how you work it. The truth is I’m a perfectionist and I like to present myself a certain way. This is who I am on the inside, so I think it should be reflected on the outside. Plus, I really like doing this stuff, and if my hobby makes me shallow, then so be it. I like seeing the results of my hard work, and if I can literally wear the results, all the better. But certain people in my life have expressed that they think it’s excessive. Those people also have hobbies on which they spend a lot of money, but somehow this is different. So often we’re told that makeup is meant to “cover up” any perceived flaws; that anyone who feels good about the way they look on the outside is surely vapid on the inside. The media presents a picture of “ideal beauty,” but if someone even attempts to achieve it, they’re shallow. That kind of otherwordly beauty simply isn’t achieved without terrific self care. In other words, women should be stunningly beautiful, but they shouldn’t put any effort into being so. They should be Lorelai Gilmore, who wakes up in the morning in full “natural” makeup, is able to eat whatever she wants without exercise and can drink beers with the boys. No woman is that woman. But it’s totally possible to be cool and like makeup. For me and many women, these things are a form of self expression and a way to prepare for the day or decompress after a stressful week. I have no doubt that people would find sanctuary in self care if they opened their minds. And if it’s just not they’re thing, that’s OK. You should be the you that you want to be, always, and I’ll do the same. VLM
