Women’s Hair Loss Why Does it Happen? & What can you do about it?
What used to be a “men’s condition” is now quickly becoming a female epidemic. It is scary to think that you could randomly wake up one day and begin to see more hair on the pillow case and less on your head. For women losing their hair, it is a serious blow to femininity and the ideal vision of themselves. We are constantly cutting and coloring to make sure our hair looks the best it can. But what if one day the un-thinkable happens… and it falls out and doesn’t grow back?
1
Question: What causes women’s hair loss? Answer: Female hair loss can be
caused by multiple factors, but the most common cause is an underlying genetic pre-disposition to hair loss known as androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss. Unlike the popular myth that you inherit hair loss from your mother’s father, women can inherit hair loss from either side of the family. This means that women can inherit hair loss from men and vice versa. It is much more common than people know. There are other factors that can cause hair loss or increase hair loss due to family history. They include stress, lifestyle, diet, thyroid disfunction, fungal infections, scalp parasites, and medications (most common hormone replacement and birth control pills).
2
Question: What do your clinics use to help women with thinning hair?
Answer: Depending on the reason for the loss, the treatment protocol will vary. Usually though for common female pattern hair loss the protocol is relatively similar. We a have a 9 month program that includes twice weekly office visits for cool light laser treatments for the scalp. This stimulates cell regeneration and is already approved to promote thicker hair. Our program also includes topical pharmaceuticals, hormone therapy balancing cream, nutritional supplementation, holistic hair care products, and topical scalp serums. This is most aggressive treatment that we offer, but it works. When you use everything together the way that our program does, you are bound to get results.
3
Question: What advice would you give a woman who is dealing with this problem?
Answer: Find the source of the problem as quickly as possible and treat that problem. Don’t try to treat it yourself because it wastes time that could be spent growing hair back. I obviously would recommend to call us and then come in for a consultation. Worst case scenario, you can stop the progression of the loss. Best case, we can dramatically reverse your hair loss and regrow hair. We have had numerous cases where a woman was wearing a wig or extensions when they started the treatment. Then 9 months later they were able to remove their wig permanently or stop getting extensions because their hair had gained so much volume and density.

Question: Is there hope for women with thinning hair? How do you control it?
Answer: There certainly is. There are
so many tools that can be used to control female hair loss and reverse it in many cases. Once you have established the reason for the hair loss and it can be treated with a variety of methods. Unfortunately, most general physicians simply don’t have the time or the knowledge to get a full understanding of why a woman is losing her hair. The female patient is then left combing the internet for solutions that rarely leads to any real answer.
5
Question: How you do know what is causing your hair loss?
Answer: A simple patient history is the easiest way. Many women have blood tests for hormonal issues, thyroid dysfunction, iron levels, and vitamin D deficiency. Unfortunately this rarely produces any other cause other than normal pattern hair loss. At our clinics we use a video microscope to analyze the condition of the scalp at 50x magnification. At this level we can tell if the client has loss due to stress, diet, infection of the hair follicle, or simple hormonally related hair loss.

6
Question: Is there maintenance required?
Answer: 99% yes. I usually tell people it’s like brushing your teeth. If you don’t brush them and go to the dentist, your teeth will rot and fall out. The same goes for your hair. If you have a genetic hair loss problem, you have two options; oneyou can treat the problem long term, or two- let your hair fall out and go bald. Clearly our clients choose hair.

editor's letter
THESE DAYS I’M TRYING TO KEEP COOL. I’m not just talking about these impossibly high temperatures, but also about my personal Zen. When you’re under the pressure of work deadlines and personal responsibilities, it can be difficult not to snap when smaller issues come to light and get in the way of your plans. Oh, those naive plans. It’s funny how they rarely work out. Then again, life wouldn’t be life if the unexpected didn’t happen. And sometimes for the best. I look at people like our 480 Opener, Lissette Lent, and her infinite patience with the unexpected. Lent doesn’t let her daughter’s developmental disability get in the way of her family’s happiness. Lent strives to be better, and let’s face it, her daughter, Maggie Hope, makes it easy to stay positive with an always hopeful disposition. Together, Gilbert’s Lent ladies inspired “We’re Not So Different After All,” an illustrated children’s book that teaches other children about developmental and physical disabilities. Our health is something we often take for granted, so this month we’re all about embracing it!

From “glamping” at the Flagstaff Nordic Center (P. 44) to swimming in some of the Valley’s best resort pools (P. 36), life in the summer doesn’t have to mean staying inside in the air conditioning. Heck, if you shade your outdoor space properly, you won’t even feel the heat at all! Cool off with our outdoor shading tips on P. 49. And if you’re ever feeling down, you can look at man’s best friend (Orrrr woman’s best friend!) to perk you up. I know my dogs brighten my day when I get home. They always orchestrate a songand-dance routine with their delighted honks and jumps. I can only imagine how our cover girl and East Valley’s Cutest Pet winner Abby lights up when owner Sharon Martin walks through the door. And with her shaggy hair and adorable little bows, I have to say I’d light up, too. So let’s say it together: “Thing always work out for the best.” And if they don’t, there’s always a few doggy kisses to make it all feel better. Wag on,

Hopeful LISSETTE LENT SUSES RED GLASSES TO SPREAD A MESSAGE OF LOVE BY BREANNE DEMORE
Lissette Lent was always hopeful her children would grow up to be happy and healthy, but when she was surprised by her fourth pregnancy, the word “hope” gained a whole new definition. “We had three kids and we were done having any more kids,” Lent says. “We just got the shocker that I was pregnant again and we were like ‘Okay! Here we go again! Let’s do this!’” The mother of a 10-year-old, a 6-year-old and an almost 2-year-old knew the process well and started making the appropriate doctor appointments. “At 17 weeks pregnant, we went in for our normal ultrasound to find out where we were and what the baby’s sex was, and I noticed that it had taken a lot longer than typical ultrasounds,” says Lent. “I just knew something was wrong. I remember looking over [to my husband] and saying, ‘Something’s not right.’”

"... her spirit has never broken. She’s the sweetest, most amazing little girl. She loves life."
Unfortunately, no one could tell her what exactly was wrong. The doctor told her that they would just keep moving forward and keep an eye on things. However, as her pregnancy progressed, Lent started experiencing pre-term labor and was put on bed rest at home. She then had to be moved to the hospital, where she lived for the next three-tofour weeks on bed rest. Daily ultrasounds and check-ups revealed bad news after bad news, from brain functions to the formation of the baby’s feet. “It was just the darkest time of my life,” Lent says. “There was one day where I was just like, ‘You know, Lissette, you have to come out of this. You can’t let this get you down. You have to be the best you can be for your other three kids and for this baby. This baby is going to need you to be strong.’ And I felt like the word ‘hope’ was given to me in that moment, and I felt like that was what her name should be. She needed to be Maggie Hope.” Maggie Hope Lent was born shortly after and spent three weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit connected to every device possible. She was diagnosed with Trisomy 8 Mosaicism Syndrome, a condition that causes developmental delays. Despite all odds, she kept getting stronger and stronger, and although she has experienced plenty of setbacks and challenges in her short life, she has never given up hope. 14
VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JUNE 2015
“Through all of that, her spirit has never broken. She’s the sweetest, most amazing little girl. She loves life,” Lent says. “She has so much joy and anyone who has the opportunity to meet her falls in love with her immediately. She just has this presence about her.” She is now a thriving 7-year-old little girl who loves to dance, play and go to school, but Lent can’t help but notice the way other kids act around Maggie Hope. “Obviously, there are differences between her and a typical child. She’s non-verbal. She screams when she’s excited. She wears big, red glasses,” explains Lent understandingly. “Those things are scary to young kids, and I have noticed in the past we would be out and young kids would run away from her. And parents just don’t even know how to handle the situation.” “What I want to do is inspire parents to have those conversations before they become an issue. So it’s one of those staples that you teach your children, like respecting authority or saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ I want parents to teach your children to treat others who look and act differently with kindness and compassion.” So Lent started Red Glasses Productions, and after raising the money from a Kickstarter campaign, wrote “We’re Not So Different After All.” The adorably illustrated children’s book focuses on Maggie Hope, in all of her big, red glasses glory, and is told from the perspective of her older brother, Noah. Beautifully illustrated and with bright colors and rhyming words, the book puts the conversation in terms that young kids and parents can understand. “In the back of the book, I wrote a teaching tool for parents. I wrote a ‘start the conversation’ page, where a parent can sit down with their child and read this page to them and really help them understand,” says Lent. She has already gotten a lot of great feedback from parents on the teaching tool and the book and is hoping that Maggie Hope’s story becomes a children’s favorite, helping all children understand that those with disabilities aren’t so different after all. For more information on Maggie Hope and where you can get “We’re Not So Different After All,” head to redglasses.org. VLM

A-DOG-ABLE! INTRODUCING THE EAST VALLEY’S CUTEST (AND KINDEST) PET BY SONDRA BARR PHOTOS BY CHADWICK FOWLER
Editor’s Note: These are the results from the “East Valley’s Cutest Pet” contest that our sister publication, East Valley Magazine, ran annually via social media. Since East Valley Magazine is no longer in print, we knew that the readers of Valley Lifestyles Magazine would want to see these lovable pooches.
As the winner of the contest, Abby, an Old English Sheepdog, is more than just a pretty face. A canine volunteer with PAWS for Patients at Chandler Regional Medical Center/ Dignity Health, Abby elicits smiles and joy from residents who love seeing her roam the halls of the hospital with her pet “parent,” Sharon Martin, in tow. They also show delight at Abby’s assortment of tricks, like waving her paws or tossing a treat from her nose into her mouth. Quite the local star, Abby also brings a bit of panache to the summer reading program at the Chandler Sunset Library. Valley Lifestyles: How did you happen to bring Abby into your home?
Martin: When Steve, my husband, came to Arizona from Minnesota to attend ASU, he and his roommate got a sheepdog. After graduation, it was decided the dog would go live in Oregon with the roommate’s family. Steve has missed having a sheepdog for 30 years. As a surprise gift for his birthday, we gave him Abby. Abby came to live with us at eight weeks and 8 pounds; by nine months, she was fully grown and at her current weight of 68 pounds.
20
VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JUNE 2015
Does Abby have any unique characteristics?
Abby started training for therapy work at 4 months old. She is a graduate from PetSmart training school. She got her canine good citizenship (CGC) certificate in 2013, and in 2015 she passed her National Pet Therapy Certification. Sheepdogs are so smart and eager to work but are very exuberant and clownish, too. We spent lots of hours training her to pass her therapy test. We volunteer with PAWS for Patients at Chandler Regional Medical Center/Dignity Health and Caring Canines at the Mayo Clinic Phoenix Campus. … At the hospital, she thinks her name is “Oh, My” because everyone that sees her says that out loud and she turns and wags her bottom all the way to them. That’s another endearing feature of Abby. With the bobbed tail, she has only her back end to wag. People love to see her wiggly bottom. … She can always bring a smile to everyone’s face. Our favorite description of Abby is that she is the Will Rogers of dogs—she has never met a person yet she didn’t want to have pet her or want to lick. What are some of Abby’s personality traits?
Abby loves stuffed toys. She drags out all her toys, loves on each one, and leaves them all in the middle of the TV room,
just like a toddler. She also loves swimming at the lake or in the family pool. The word “swim” can excite her and get the cutest head tilt. She knows the words “pool,” “lake,” and “swim.” Her other outside activity is playing tetherball. She will play alone or against an opponent. Watch out—she usually wins! She has been known to pop a tetherball with one chomp just to make sure she keeps hold of the ball. How has your household changed since you brought Abby home?
Abby is our empty-nest project. Our daughter, Kara [is] 24, out of college and living on her own. Our son, Trey [is] 19 [and] is just finishing his freshman year at ASU. When he left for the dorm last fall, we became empty nesters. Abby filled that need to parent. We tease because she is the one kid that won’t move out or leave us, and she always wants to go with us. We take her on vacation trips, out to eat and to dog functions. We love sharing this special breed and our special dog with others.
THE RUNNER-UP
Daisy
This adorable Yorkshire terrier came in second in the contest. Daisy had been left to die by her previous owners because she suffered from severe bladder crystals and they didn’t want to pay for the treatment. The shelter took her in, paid for the surgery and saved her life. “Daisy had only known cages, pain and abandonment her whole life,” says owner Diane Balzer. She and her husband, Matt, couldn’t not bring her home after spying her at the shelter. Daisy now enjoys the good life with her pet parents, plus two boys and a labradoodle named Star. THE THIRD-PLACE FINISHER
Monkey
Coming in third is Monkey, a purebred boxer, who was picked up as a stray 14-week-old puppy with a broken leg by the Arizona Humane Society (AHS). The AHS contacted Almost Home Boxer Rescue to take Monkey in and help raise funds to surgically repair his leg. Heather Fetter and her husband volunteered to foster Monkey until a second corrective surgery or amputation took place. They were smitten with him and officially adopted him. As it turns out, Monkey’s leg corrected itself—a good thing, since he tags along to work at the couple’s Mesa paddleboard shop and lives with three cats, with which he alternates between chasing and playing. THE ADVENTURER
INSIDE
EXPLORE THE EARTH THROUGH THE EYES OF TRUE ADVENTURERS AT MESA ARTS CENTER BY LADAWN LINGARD
Just the other day my 23-year-old son says to me, “C’mon Mom, take chances, make mistakes! That’s life.” And my son is right. Life is meant to be lived fully including the ups and downs, mistakes and successes. I am inspired by people who put on their “Indiana Jones” hat and come back to tell the stories. National Geographic is a superb goto source to find these stories. The 2015-2016 “National Geographic Live!” season at Mesa Arts Center will present four of those fascinating people, specifically explorers who are pushing the boundaries of exploration in our world, each in their own way. You can discover the wonders and fragility of the deep blue seas with National Geographic Society explorer-in-residence and oceanographer Dr. Sylvia A. Earle. Or travel to Africa with Emmy Award-winning wildlife cinematographer Bob Poole as he shares filming memories of the National Geographic Channel production, “War Elephants.” In a tale for the ages, 2014 National Geographic emerging explorer Nizar Ibrahim discloses his obsessive journey to find “a needle in a desert”—the first semi-aquatic dinosaur. If you like heights, try National Geographic’s 2012 “Explorer of the Year,” Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner. She is the first woman to achieve the extraordinary feat of scaling all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks without the use of supplementary oxygen. Exploring at its finest is in store for you at Mesa Arts Center starting in the fall. VLM

WATERED DOWN
WORKOUT
POOL WORKOUTS TO EMBRACE THE HOT TEMPS BY JULIE LEMEROND
Here we are already in June, and chances are, an outdoor workout has become a thing of the past (until October, anyway). But even as the temperatures rise in the Valley, you can still get outdoors to raise your heart rate. That’s right…get to your nearest pool and dive in to the wonderful world of water! Just playing around in a pool (ahem, that doesn’t mean lounging on a float with a margarita in hand) will burn calories and get your muscles awake and alive. But to build some muscle and burn some fat, here is a short list of ways to turn water into a workout: GO THE DISTANCE
Take a set number of laps back and forth, alternating each lap with various different types of strokes (breast stroke, backstroke, butterfly, etc.). Strong swimming workouts can burn upwards of 700 calories per hour, although just playing around in a pool equates to half of that. HOT DOG
Is the pool that you are in not conducive to laps? Try doggie paddling. It looks a lot easier than it is—so set a timer for five or ten minutes and then find a spot in the middle of the pool (one where you can’t cheat) and get busy! If this is a chore, grab a radio and vow to do the doggy paddle for a full song. Sing along to keep your mind from thinking about the burning your thighs are feeling.
grab your foot and straighten it out to the side, getting a deep stretch while being supported by the water. Or dive underneath and settle into a playful handstand without the fear of falling! GET CREATIVE
Use props. Water dumbbells and noodles are available at any sporting goods store, and are a great way to add some resistance to any water workout! Try these options in water that is chest-high. Dumbbells: For dumbbells, try curls (arms straight down by your side with a dumbbell in each hand, palms facing forward and curl up), flys (open arms shoulder-height apart with a dumbbell in each hand, keeping arms straight, bring hands together) or jogging through the water with the dumbbells in hand—an easy way to add some resisitance. Noodles: With the pool noodles, you’ll want to try twists (hold noodle out in front of you and leaving feet grounded, twist side to side), kicks (hold noodle out in front of you and alternate bringing a knee up to noodle) or lying back with the noodle supporting your lumbar spine and taking some laps by just paddling your legs back and forth. The best part of playing and working out in a pool is you get to feel like a kid again. So dive in, splash around and soak up some sun. The floating raft (and the margarita!) will be there to reward you at the end! VLM
POOL YOGA
If you have ever gotten frustrated with trying to secure balancing poses in yoga, then yoga in a pool is right for you. Stand in chest-high water and start playing around with all of those fun poses that are normally so wobbly on the mat. Try tree pose, then

WHAT TO BE THANKFUL FOR IN OUR SLICE OF AMERICA BY CHRISTINA CALDWELL
It might only be June, but it’s never too early to celebrate our country’s independence. The Fourth of July will be here before you know it, and there’s certainly plenty to celebrate nationally, but we’re all about living locally. It might be 200 degrees outside, but there’s plenty of red, white and blue to appreciate right here in the Valley when the sole of your shoe hasn’t melted to the concrete. All in all, Arizona is a pretty cool place to live. Here’s a breakdown of the best of the Phoenix area’s red, white and blue to refresh your appreciation for our dusty desert town.

A special recipe Bloody Mary with the addition of cheese curds, celery, asparagus and olives, they also throw in a cheeseburger slider for good measure. (Yes, really.) It’s basically a cure in a cup.
THE SUNSET Say what you will about Arizona summers, but its sunsets are unmatched. The world’s most stunning places are rivaled by the Valley as soon as the sun starts to go down. While our sunsets can have many colors, from purple to yellow, perhaps the stand-out color is a fiery red to match our fiery temperatures.

THE RED ROCKS While Sedona isn’t technically in the Valley, it just a two hour drive away—and the perfect escape for when you need to get up close and personal with nature. Sedona’s red rocks might offer the most jaw-dropping view in Arizona, even when compared to The Grand Canyon.
THE ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS Not long ago, The Diamondbacks wouldn’t have fit on this list. Trading in their trademark turquoise and teal, The D-backs took on black, sand and Sedona Red as their “true” colors in 2006. We’re ever thankful for our boys in rusty red—and their stadium’s retractable roof.

FOUR PEAKS IN THE SNOW We rarely get snow in the Valley, but on very cold days, you can look up to Four Peaks and get your fill of white—white-capped mountains, that is. If you’ve migrated from a snowy state, that’s probably as close to snow as you’re comfortable with, and we’re OK with that.
WHITE MOCHA AT THE COFFEE SHOP AT AGRITOPIA OK, so the white mocha at The Coffee Shop at Agritopia isn’t exactly white, but it does use white chocolate for a creamy, not-too-sweet combination that beats Starbucks any day. Head back to the shop during winter for a peppermint white mocha to celebrate the season.
TORTILLAS AT CAROLINA'S MEXICAN FOOD They’re the stuff of local legend. No one can match Carolina’s famous tortillas, which are touted by the restaurant and locals as “the best tortillas in town.” If you beg to differ, you can send your homemade tortillas to our office, but please make sure you ship a package of Carolina’s tortillas for comparison. RUM BAR’S PIÑA COLADA Downtown Phoenix’s The Breadfruit has a boozier sibling in next door’s Rum Bar. As you can guess by the bar’s name, the staff at Rum Bar are Phoenix’s foremost experts on the Caribbean specialty. Order a piña colada here and you’ll get the staff’s concoction of homemade coconut liqueur, coconut cream, nutmeg, pineapple, and of course, rum. Order it on the rocks or blended! 32

THE BLUE LIGHT OF TOPGOLF When Topgolf first opened in Gilbert, neighbors weren’t happy about its flashy blue lights, seen from a long distance away. A driving range with a bowling alley’s personality, Topgolf is fun for all ages.
TEMPE TOWN LAKE Before Tempe Town Lake, Tempe was looking pretty dry. Today, the manmade lake brings together millions of people each year, from fishermen to concertgoers at Tempe Beach Park, stimulating the Downtown Tempe economy and providing a scenic and active center for the community. THE VALLEY’S BEST RESORT POOLS By Breanne DeMore Snow birds fly in and nest at all of our resorts during the winter, and baseball fans swing into town and fill up the rooms during Spring Training. But the scorching heat scares away out-of-towners and melts down room rates during the summer, leaving our beautiful resorts open and welcome to all locals. We’ve rounded up the best pools at the most relaxing resorts, each with their own personality, to make your summer staycation stress free!
THE THROWBACK
Hotel Valley Ho Picture this—it’s 1957 and you’re staying at the swinging new hotel in a small town named Scottsdale, Arizona. You’re lounging by the pool with an ice-cold tea in your hand. You look to your left and Bing Crosby is a few chairs down serenading a young lady. To your right, Zsa Zsa Gabor and her daughter are relaxing with some lemonade. You might think that it would take a time machine to experience this scene, but replace Crosby and Gabor with some Scottsdale socialites and you’ve found yourself at Scottsdale’s Hotel Valley Ho. Built in 1956, the Valley Ho is easily one of Scottsdale’s most iconic historic sites, and after undergoing an extensive remodel in 2005, it is now one of the city’s places to be seen once again. DIVE IN: Hotel Valley Ho’s subtly martini glass and olive shaped OH Pool is one of the best places to people watch—and be watched—in the state. In addition to two Jaccuzis, eight private cabanas and plenty of chaise lounges to relax in, the Valley Ho’s new OHasis Pool is perfect for getting some laps in or relaxing with multiple water features and towering, shady palms.

If you have out-of-town guests or family visiting, this hotel is a great way of making sure your home doesn’t turn into cramped quarters. Nearly all of the guest rooms have stunning views of the pool complex or the Riverview Park area and oversized suites are available with extra sleeping space if needed. OUR DESTINATION VACATION, NO MORE THAN 6 HOURS FROM THE VALLEY

e n o G Glamping Flagstaff’s Nordic Center provides the right amount of grit with modern amenities BY SCOTT SHUMAKER
The travel industry coins new words at a furious pace. Recent creations include “babymoons” (a vacation before a child’s birth), “honeyteering” (a honeymoon combined with volunteering), “mancations” (exactly what it sounds like), and perhaps my most and least favorite, “bleisure,” (an unfortunate combination of business and leisure). “Glamping,” or glamorous camping, beats all of these terms in popularity. Google Trends shows a steady increase in the use of “glamping” on the web since it appeared in about 2006. Glamping—the term and activity— gained a foothold by meeting a neglected demand: natural solitude without survival skills. Because we are not seasoned campers, we were interested in testing out this particular travel trend. We found a glamping spot in Northern Arizona that’s an easy drive from the Valley.
6 hour drive The Flagstaff Nordic Center is on the way to the Grand Canyon and caters to travelers who are interested in “gently roughing it”—the epitome of glamping. In the wintertime, cross-country skiers and other winter vacationers play among the Nordic Center’s 31 miles of trails. In the summer, the Nordic Center transforms into a cool retreat among aspen and pine at 8,300 feet above sea level. The Nordic Center’s calling card is its yurts—round, wood-framed tents inspired by the traditional homes of Central Asian nomads. Five of these are scattered in the Coconino National Forest between one and two miles from the main lodge. The entire operation is off-grid with solar panels and water deliveries. OK, so the Nordic Center has rustic covered, but does it have the glamour side of glamping? General Manager Mark Gullo talked us into taking Morning Glory—the Nordic Center’s most remote yurt. We were a little anxious about being two miles from the car, but we took Gullo’s advice. After stuffing our backpacks with gear we mounted our bikes and hit the trail around lunchtime. We huffed and puffed through dense stands of pine as glimpses of open meadows and a galloping elk appeared through the trees. After about two miles of pedaling, the forest gave way to a high meadow where we spied the Morning Glory yurt. As we made the final approach to our digs, a view of the snow-capped San Francisco Mountain suddenly arrested our attention. After gaping at the mountain looming over our campsite, we turned to investigate our accommodations.
RIGHT: Wood floors and fireplaces elevate the Nordic Center’s yurt camping above traditional camping in terms of comfort. Photo by FNC staff. 46

ABOVE: Short hikes from the Nordic Center’s yurt lead to views of San Francisco Mountain. Photo by Erik Shumaker.
We were relieved to find that the Nordic Center has the “glamorous” part of glamping covered, too. The basic Central Asian yurt has been tricked out with amenities that include a fireplace, soft sleeping pads, a gas grill, portable toilet and a Plexiglas dome to watch the stars from inside. The yurts are clean and pack enough amenities to make even the camping-averse comfortable. We even had full cell service, which would theoretically enable—dare I say it—bleisure. We promptly fired up the gas grill and prepared a lunch to kick-off our mini-vacation. (Minication?) After lunch we played Frisbee in the meadow and hiked to a panoramic view close to the yurt. We also biked to the Nature Conservancy’s Hart Prairie Preserve, which is nearby and open to the public by appointment. The views from the Conservancy’s historic cabins, once a stop on a stage road to the Grand Canyon, are jaw-dropping.
After dinner the cold began to set in and we retreated inside our yurt. Even we non-campers were able to kindle a toasty fire in no time. By bedtime the inside of the yurt was actually hot. The Nordic Center historically focused on winter play and only recently pivoted to summer play, too. Gullo says today only a handful of the pilgrims heading to the Grand Canyon, just 60 miles away, stop at the Nordic Center. They should. Nightly rates range from $45 for small yurts to $75 for large yurts (which sleep 8). If you are willing to “gently rough it” glamping-style, a yurt might be the perfect getaway. VLM The Flagstaff Nordic Center is located at Mile Marker 232 on US Highway 180. More information can be found at flagstaffnordiccenter.com or by calling (928) 220-0550.

MADE IN THE
HOW TO COOL YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE FOR THE SUMMER
BY BREANNE DEMORE
Those of us who have survived at least one summer in the Valley of the Sun know better than to spend any unnecessary time outside between the months of July and September. However, the month of June tends to be not so miserable, especially in the shade and in the evenings. (Obviously a seasoned native might have a different definition of "miserable.") We’ve broken down some simple and easy ways to savor the last moments before we topple over that 110-degree mark.

Plants Sometimes things are easier than you first think—why not use nature to fight nature? There are plenty of plants out there that provide lots of shade and are pretty to look at. Sure, decent sized trees are tried and true, but think about vines on a trellis or a wall of hanging ferns. Depending on the time of day, these plants will provide beautiful, sunscattering shade and will always add a bit of life to your backyard.
ENJOY YOUR EVENINGS In the heat of the summer, say July and August, the nights don’t cool down in the city because of the amount of concrete and asphalt that surround us. However, before those materials have had time to bake for months on end, the evenings do cool down to tolerable temperatures that allow outdoor entertaining or simply enjoying on your own.
HIDING FROM THE SUN Once it gets truly, truly hot outside, even the shade is a hot place to be. However, due to Arizona's dry desert climate, spending a 90-to-high-100s degree day in the shade really can be quite enjoyable. Here are some options for shading your outdoor space. Shade sails You’ve probably seen these at a variety of restaurants and playgrounds across the East Valley and they are exactly what they sound like—shade created by suspended cloth that resembles a ship’s sail. Originally created in Australia using that same thought process, the cloth is now made out of a synthetic knit fabric that blocks out up to 90 percent of the sun’s rays. They can sustain heavy rain and sunlight, are aesthetically pleasing and can cost under $100, depending on the size of the space you wish to shade. Umbrellas We see them outside of every restaurant with outside seating and we understand if you aren’t their biggest fan. They seem clunky, unstable and temperamental. However, there is something exotic about finding the right umbrella and using it in your space—it definitely offers a getaway atmosphere to your backyard. Making sure that you invest in a quality umbrella that can withstand weather and is easy to put up and down is important, as is being careful to buy one that fits your outdoor space in size and aesthetic.

Fans You’ve heard the phrase “fan the flame” when it comes to making a fire, right? Well, we’re suggesting that you fan the heat instead. Using an electric fan outside on a low setting, or a adding a ceiling fan to a covered outdoor entertaining area, can be just the trick for keeping you and any guests comfortable. Simply having air moving and oscillating around the group will keep people cool. Keeping it on a low setting will keep the fan quieter and be less attention-drawing, so you’ll be to focus on your conversation or that book you haven’t been able to put down. Serving This may sound like common sense, but you will never believe how often it is forgotten. Be mindful of what you’re serving when you have guests or eating when you’re on your own. If you want to enjoy your outdoor space on a fairly warm night, make sure to drink plenty of cool water, though we suggest alternating that with an ice-cold cocktail or a perfectly chilled white wine. Salads, fruit and festive frozen desserts will keep everyone enjoying themselves and distracted from the heat. VLM

AT GILBERT’S BARRIO QUEEN
BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON PHOTOS BY SAM NALVEN
Simply put, the culinary scene in Downtown Gilbert is on fire and is only getting hotter, in part thanks to new addition Barrio Queen. In May, Barrio Queen took up residence with a fresh and creative take on Mexican cuisine. Chef Julio Mata is the consulting chef for Barrio Queen and has been working with the popular Mexican food concept for more than five years. “I started cooking when I was 16 years old. I worked as a bus boy first. I would stand on the line and see the cooks working. I thought, ‘Wow—that looks like fun.’ I would see the chef yelling and the flames and it got my attention,” says Mata. He would also talk to the chefs, then go shopping for ingredients and recreate dishes at home. It’s that do-it-yourself culinary attitude that continues to propel Mata today. Not overpoweringly spicy, the well-balanced cocktail is crisp and refreshing and leaves the essence of green chile on the back end. The ensalada del Barrio Queen is also a popular item that
combines the bright flavors of Mexico. The light and healthy entree is a perfect summertime salad. “The salad has fresh spinach, jicama, mango, tomatoes, red onions, avocado and the dressing is an orange vinaigrette,” says Mata. “It’s fresh orange juice, reduced down with olive oil, salt, pepper and fresh lime juice.” All of Barrio Queen’s dressings, sauces, salsas and corn tortillas are made in-house daily, and the service of guacamole prepared tableside is a must for customers, as it is both tasty and interactive. When pomegranates are in season, the addition of

the fruit’s seeds make for a savory guacamole with just a touch of crunch and sweetness. Simmered with orange rind and topped with diced onion and cilantro, the flavorful carnitas is a Mexican food staple and another highlyrecommended dish. “It’s definitely a taco that’s very traditional in Mexico,” Mata says. “Almost every corner in Mexico has taco stands with carnitas.” The carne asada, chorizo azul puts a tasty twist on traditional carne asada. The thin-sliced beef marinated with fresh orange and garlic is grilled and then topped with chorizo and the addition of slightly tangy, but mellow bleu cheese. Bleu cheese may not be the first thing to come to mind to add to a taco, but Mata has cleverly combined flavors to make this carne asada dish pop with unexpected flavor. A very old and traditional Mexican specialty, the cochinita pibil roughly translated means, “little suckling pig” and is Barrio Queen’s signature dish. “It is a slow-roasted pork wrapped in banana leaves and rubbed with achiote, spices, garlic, oregano, bay leaf and it is cooked in the oven 12 to 14 hours,” Mata says. Ancient Mayans used to prepare this pork dish wrapped in leaves and cooked in a hole in the ground. “It’s not just Barrio Queen’s signature dish, I think it’s Mexico’s signature dish,” Mata says. “It’s just a great dish.” The entrée is complimented with corn tortillas, black beans and rice. What would a Mexican meal be without a sinful dessert? Bread pudding is a must at Barrio Queen and features tequila and a goat’s milk caramel. “It’s also served with pecans over ice cream,” Mata says. “You get the warm bread pudding with the cold ice cream and caramel drizzle. It’s a wonderful dessert.” Mata was excited to see Barrio Queen join the historic Downtown Gilbert family of businesses and is front and center in developing new dishes throughout the year. Decorated in a “Dia de Los Muertos” style, the restaurant is far from dead. Its hype-worthy reputation and upbeat atmosphere make it very much alive. VLM

MAC ‘N CHEESE BURGER BY JASMINE KEMPER
SanTan Brewing Company is not your average brewpub. Located in the dining, shopping and entertainment hub of Downtown Chandler, it’s no surprise that it is one of the most popular eateries around. Chip Mulala of SanTan Brewing says their chef loves to take already amazing dishes and combine them to create out-of-this-world flavors that’ll blow your taste buds away. Don’t believe us? Then you gotta try their delicious mac ‘n cheese burger. “When he added our special brisket mac 'n cheese to the menu, he had a vision to join the best of both worlds,” Mulala says. “I asked him why he was inspired to make this burger and he looked at me as if I was crazy! He said, ‘It's obvious why. Too much goodness!’” The mac ‘n cheese burger consists of the basics: macaroni, cheese, ground beef burger and a bun. But what SanTan does with these ingredients is enough to make your mouth water. “We take our cheesy house made macaroni and cheese and form a griddle cake out of it. Place it on the grill and crisp it up on both sides. We then cook a half-pound fresh ground burger (chef suggests medium rare) and place on a toasted bun. We then add the mac 'n cheese cake on top of the burger and drizzle our beer cheese sauce on top,” Mulala says. (He recommends pairing it with a SanTan Devil's Ale and bacon potato salad or ale battered fries. Yum!) But what do their customers think about this culinary creation?

IN SEASON BELL PEPPERS
BELL PEPPERS BY CHRISTINA CALDWELL
Love them or hate them, bell peppers are just trying to get sweet on you. Often colloquially called “sweet peppers,” bell peppers come in many varieties, from the popular green, orange, yellow and red to the less common brown, white and purple. But really, they’re all the same. Contrary to popular belief, the different colored bell peppers aren’t different strains, but actually plucked at different ages. They all come from the same single seed source—capsicum annuum. Green bell peppers, for example, are usually plucked from the vine before their prime. Orange, yellow and red bell peppers are allowed to grow to their prime on the vine, leading to added sweetness and brightness of flavor. Bell peppers are packed with vitamins—primarily Vitamin C. Eating just one bell pepper will give you 97 percent of your daily intake of Vitamin C. (That’s 33 percent more than an orange!) This is good news for pepper lovers, especially since the fruit (and yes, it is technically a fruit) can be used in a wide variety of ways, from fajita add-ins to jam. Roast them for an exotic, rustic flavor that turns the basic, crunchy fruit into something soul-warming and stick-to-your-bones delicious. VLM

FINAL THOUGHTS
AMORE VINO BY BREANNE DEMORE
I am in a relationship with wine. It’s just like any other healthy, typical relationship. We get along very well for the most part, but when we spend a little too much time together, we start to get a little resentful and need some space. Soon enough though, we’re back together. Like all love stories, ours has a “meet cute.” I like to think of wine as an “old family friend.” Wine spent plenty of time with my family when I was growing up. However, it was when I studied abroad in Italy that suddenly I saw it differently. I had always been slighty attracted to it, but once I was in Italy, I became enchanted by the romance of it all. I was able to fully appreciate how much hard work went into it and how it was so much more than just a beverage. I was able to witness and learn how wine brings people together. Just the other evening, my boyfriend and I (Wine and I aren’t exclusive.) enjoyed a great conversation with my sister and brother-in-law over a bottle of wine. My nephews and niece had gone to sleep and we enjoyed a great Pinot Noir while eating some brownies and having a grown-up conversation that isn’t usually afforded due to their schedules with twin three-year-old boys and a 16-month-old daughter. The next day happened to be National Wine Day (May 25), so to celebrate, my boyfriend and I opened a bottle of wine that a friend had brought us when he came to visit. As I sat there, drinking this thoughtful, delicious present and enjoying it with a person that I loved, I thought back on my relationship with wine and all the joy it has brought me over the years. 68
VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JUNE 2015
Almost five years ago, my best friend and I bonded over our desire to learn as much as we could about Italian red wine our second day in Italy and spent the next several months getting to know each other over late night glasses. After we returned home from studying abroad, our whole friend group would have “wine nights” where we would get together, reminisce about our time in Italy, make hopeful plans of going back and, of course, drink wine. My boyfriend is from one of California’s main wineproducing regions and we instantly bonded over our desire to learn more about the craft. I have been able to go visit his home several times and get to know his whole family over wine and plenty of delicious food. To me, wine is something that brings people together. Family, friends and strangers can all bond over the warming, eye-opening liquid. Whether they are discussing which clone of Cabernet Sauvignon this vineyard used or simply which box they like better, I see wine open conversation between people and allow them to relate to one another. To me, this is a beautiful thing. Consider it a hobby, a passion, or sure, a relationship, but my bond with wine has served a great purpose in my life, and for that I am incredibly grateful. I know it all sounds a bit silly, my “relationship” with wine, but I bet if you look back, you are able to find one thing that you appreciate beyond what you first thought. For me it is wine, but for you it might be cars, cooking or music. Whatever it is, I encourage you take a moment, acknowledge it and appreciate it.VLM
