Women’s Hair Loss
Why Does it Happen? & What can you do about it? What used to be a “men’s condition” is now quickly becoming a female epidemic. It is scary to think that you could randomly wake up one day and begin to see more hair on the pillow case and less on your head. For women losing their hair, it is a serious blow to femininity and the ideal vision of themselves. We are constantly cutting and coloring to make sure our hair looks the best it can. But what if one day the un-thinkable happens… and it falls out and doesn’t grow back?
1
Question: What causes women’s hair loss? Answer: Female hair loss can be
caused by multiple factors, but the most common cause is an underlying genetic pre-disposition to hair loss known as androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss. Unlike the popular myth that you inherit hair loss from your mother’s father, women can inherit hair loss from either side of the family. This means that women can inherit hair loss from men and vice versa. It is much more common than people know. There are other factors that can cause hair loss or increase hair loss due to family history. They include stress, lifestyle, diet, thyroid disfunction, fungal infections, scalp parasites, and medications (most common hormone replacement and birth control pills).
2
Question: What do your clinics use to help women with thinning hair?
Answer: Depending on the reason for the loss, the treatment protocol will vary. Usually though for common female pattern hair loss the protocol is relatively similar. We a have a 9 month program that includes twice weekly office visits for cool light laser treatments for the scalp. This stimulates cell regeneration and is already approved to promote thicker hair. Our program also includes topical pharmaceuticals, hormone therapy balancing cream, nutritional supplementation, holistic hair care products, and topical scalp serums. This is most aggressive treatment that we offer, but it works. When you use everything together the way that our program does, you are bound to get results.
3
Question: What advice would you give a woman who is dealing with this problem?
Answer: Find the source of the problem as quickly as possible and treat that problem. Don’t try to treat it yourself because it wastes time that could be spent growing hair back. I obviously would recommend to call us and then come in for a consultation. Worst case scenario, you can stop the progression of the loss. Best case, we can dramatically reverse your hair loss and regrow hair. We have had numerous cases where a woman was wearing a wig or extensions when they started the treatment. Then 9 months later they were able to remove their wig permanently or stop getting extensions because their hair had gained so much volume and density.

Question: Is there hope for women with thinning hair? How do you control it?
Answer: There certainly is. There are
so many tools that can be used to control female hair loss and reverse it in many cases. Once you have established the reason for the hair loss and it can be treated with a variety of methods. Unfortunately, most general physicians simply don’t have the time or the knowledge to get a full understanding of why a woman is losing her hair. The female patient is then left combing the internet for solutions that rarely leads to any real answer.
5
Question: How you do know what is causing your hair loss?
Answer: A simple patient history is the easiest way. Many women have blood tests for hormonal issues, thyroid dysfunction, iron levels, and vitamin D deficiency. Unfortunately this rarely produces any other cause other than normal pattern hair loss. At our clinics we use a video microscope to analyze the condition of the scalp at 50x magnification. At this level we can tell if the client has loss due to stress, diet, infection of the hair follicle, or simple hormonally related hair loss.

6
Question: Is there maintenance required?
Answer: 99% yes. I usually tell people it’s like brushing your teeth. If you don’t brush them and go to the dentist, your teeth will rot and fall out. The same goes for your hair. If you have a genetic hair loss problem, you have two options; oneyou can treat the problem long term, or two- let your hair fall out and go bald. Clearly our clients choose hair.

A BALANCING ACT
April Gould’s catch phrase could be “Why not?” The fit 37-year-old Gilbert mom of three isn’t afraid to take risks, especially when it means she can be a good role model for her kids. When they suggested she should try out for NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior,” she responded with her trademark up-foranything attitude: “Why not?”

I’VE BEEN IN A VACATION STATE OF MIND for the last few months.
ON THE COVER:
April Gould PHOTO: SAM NALVEN
10
I booked a flight to Italy in late January, and have been writing my to-do list (which is mostly comprised of things to eat) ever since. This month, my “tour of Italy” won’t just be an inauthentic, unsatisfying plate at Olive Garden. We all need to escape every now and then, even if it doesn’t mean physically leaving the East Valley. April Gould, for example, is a Gilbert mom of three who finds an escape in exercise, as she discusses in our Upfront 480 piece on page 13. The gutsy mom tried out for “American Ninja Warrior” and shows just how strong mothers can be—not just physically, but mentally, too. But no one would blame you if you actually wanted to escape the East Valley this time of year. No matter how many little luxuries we have here, when the sun starts searing your skin, you know it’s time for a vacation. We compiled some of the best west coast small city getaways in our Great Escape feature, perfect for adults and kids. These

cool weather towns know how to relax, which is something we could all use to do. If the SoCal scene is more your speed, writer Christina Fuoco-Karasinski took a trip to Carlsbad, California, which is so much more than LEGOLAND. A wide array of culinary options meet luxurious spas for the perfect weekend getaway, just a six hour drive away. Fuel up and get out! A vacation might not be on the books for you right now, but make sure you make time for those little freedoms that cut into your daily grind. Instead of coming home from work and plopping on the couch, I’ve been making minor household upgrades that have been improving my mood and mental clarity an astonishing amount, as I wrote in this month’s Last Word on page 64. Breathe in and breathe out. This summer, too, shall pass.

A BALANCING ACT GILBERT MOM APRIL GOULD TRIES OUT FOR ‘AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR’ BY BREANNE DEMORE
When watching incredible feats of strength and agility, such as the NBC show “American Ninja Warrior,” most people sit back and marvel while muttering to themselves, “Never in a million years . . .” However, there are a few people out there who watch others scale walls and dangle from their fingertips and say, “Why not?!” April Gould is one of those people. The 37-year-old Gilbert mother of three is a dental hygienist by trade, but also includes professional water skier, goat farmer and trapeze artist on her resume, so it’s safe to say that she has a full plate—or maybe multiple plates, all spinning on tall sticks. “I like to do a lot of fun things,” Gould says with a laugh. “I like to juggle. I like to juggle my family and I try to have fun and keep my life interesting so that I stay young. That’s my ultimate goal, I think—just try to stay young.”

“For my girls, I just want to prove to them that they can do anything that they put their mind to no matter how big the obstacle, no matter how out there it may seem."
So how did this East Valley native, who already has a job, three kids and 47 goats to keep her busy, decide to try out for NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior,” a competition TV show in which athletes attempt to complete a series of very intense obstacle courses? “My family loves to watch ‘American Ninja Warrior,’ and every time we watch, my kids would say, ‘Mom—you should do that!’ So I was like, ‘Why not?!’” Gould sent in a video and an application to the show, and a little while later, she was contacted and told that of the 50,000 applicants, she was one of the 130 chosen to run the course. Although Gould’s daily activities and challenges keep her in shape, she still needed to train and didn’t have much time to do it. “When I got the call that they wanted me to actually run the course, I went to my local gym and I was like, “I’m going to be on ‘American Ninja Warrior!’ and they were like, ‘That’s great! When?!’ And I was like, ‘I have two and a half weeks!’ So they took me under their wing and I worked out every day, twice a day for two and a half weeks and they completely transformed me. They took me from being in-shape to strong.” Gould’s family was completely supportive and behind her. Her husband, Russell, helped out when he could, and their three kids, Autumn, Summer and Lincoln, understood what their mom was doing and that there was an end in sight. Together they made it work. Of the 130 people chosen to run the “American Ninja Warrior” course, only 12, including Gould, were women—a fact that really resonated with Gould. However, when
14
VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | MAY 2015
the words “role model” were said, and when she was asked about what her two daughters think of their warrior mother, Gould’s usually infectiously perky attitude quiets. “Wow! Those are big shoes to fill!” She pauses and thinks through the next words. “For my girls, I just want to prove to them that they can do anything that they put their mind to no matter how big the obstacle, no matter how out there it may seem.” But Gould doesn’t let it get to her head, “People looking at me as a role model—that’s unexpected. I’m honored by that. [But] I’m not going into this to be like ‘I want to be a role model!’ I’m just trying to be the person that I am.” While she can’t reveal how she did on the “American Ninja Warrior” (we can all find out on May 25 at 8 p.m. on NBC), there is one thing that Gould is absolutely positive about. “I definitely am going to want to do it again next year. [It’s] so addictive. You have no idea. The people there are incredible. All the other ninjas—meeting everybody and seeing these people that I had been admiring their skills on TV and meeting them in person—they’re even greater in person. So just to be part of the ‘Ninja’ family is so amazing.” VLM

E.V. BLOG BEAT Amanda Yantos of Dog Mom Days BY BREANNE DEMORE
Amanda Yantos has always adored animals. (“As a child, I used to wheel my Beanie Babies around in a doll stroller,” she says.) Little did she know that she would one day be able to combine her passion for animals and love for writing. In December 2013, Yantos found herself working part-time from home and yearning for something more. She had rescued her first dog, Wynston, a year and a half prior, and also had two rescue cats and a guinea pig, as well. So she started her blog, dogmomdays.com. A year and a half later, Yantos has added another dog, another guinea pig and a nomination for BlogPaw’s 2015 Nose-to-Nose “Best New Pet Blog” award to her plate. It’s safe to say that she’s loving her days as a dog mom. Valley Lifestyles: When did you first fall in love with animals?
Yantos: It’s funny because I didn’t grow up with dogs. We had a cat but never a dog. None of my friends or neighbors had dogs either, but by the time I was a teenager, I felt like I was really missing out. I got my first dog when I was on my own at 19 and I’ve never looked back. What lessons have your animals taught you about life?
Wow, what haven’t my animals taught me?! They inspire me every day. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t blog. [My Chihuahua] Wynston especially (since he was dying when I rescued him) has taught me that life is too short to be fearful and miserable. What’s the point of living if you are simply surviving instead of being truly happy?
AMANDA YANTOS WITH HER CHIHUAHUA, WYNSTON, AND HER MALTESE/POODLE MIX, KHLOEE.
How do you keep your animals entertained and exercised during the hot Arizona summer months?
If you have access to a dog-friendly pool, swimming is a fantastic way to keep dogs fit, active and cool in the summer! I’d also suggest early morning or late evening walks. I know it’s hard to get out in the heat, but your dog really needs [the] exercise and mental stimulation. You can also play indoor games such as hide-and-seek to keep your dog happy, and it helps build a strong recall. VLM
What are your top tips for being a great dog mom?
Routine, exercise and put down the electronics! Daily walks and a routine are a must. Your dog gets bored in the house all day and they like knowing that an hour after you get home, it’s time to walk! Most importantly, even after a busy work day, take 15 minutes in the evening to put down all of your electronics and give your dog some undivided attention with some training or a game of fetch.

WELCOME TO THE
GUN SHOW! ARTILLERY BRINGS ARTISTIC AMMUNITION TO MESA CONTEMPORARY ARTS MUSEUM BY CASEY BLAKE
Did you own a squirt gun growing up? Or maybe you remember the iconic line from “A Christmas Story,” “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!”? American society undoubtedly has a fascination with firearms and weaponry. It is reflected in pop culture, mainstream products for people of all ages, polarizing news headlines, and even those childhood memories. At Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum (MCAM), guest curator Annie Adjchavanich is stirring conversations about that fascination, through an exhibition of selected works by artists who examine the appearance and significance of weaponry through contemporary art. What might one see in a contemporary art exhibition about weaponry? The ARTillery exhibition features more than 50 works, including a porcelain hand-painted handgun and grenade; police batons and hatchets made of silk flowers, medication and candy preserved in resin; and “Obey Molotov,” a work by contemporary street artist Shepard Fairey, who also created the widely known “Hope” poster for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. The subject of the works in the exhibition ranges from the weapons to their variety of handlers to the accessories and collateral necessary to use them. Firearms, bullets, bombs and brass knuckles have found 26

their way into a gallery, and their stylized depiction invites the viewer to look beyond the weapon to discuss meaning and consequence. In addition to ARTillery, four other curated exhibitions are on view at MCAM through August 16; The Seattle Series by artist William Barnhart and curated by Robrt Pela is a collection of largescale, high-color, oil-on-canvas paintings; Vantage Point, by Maggy Rozycki Hiltner, puts a spin on imagery from the ‘50s and ‘60s in an embroidered installation that encompasses an entire gallery; Patched, by Arizona artist Kaori Takamura, incorporates unconventional textile methods that are based on traditional fabric patterning, embroidery and lace vector art as a way of expressing women's intricate everyday feelings; and Docents Select V is an exhibition of works selected from Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum’s collection. WORKOUT
WITHOUT
GOING OUT
AT-HOME WORKOUTS TO BEAT THE SUMMERTIME SLUMP BY JULIE LEMEROND
It’s May, which means that while the rest of the country is finally renewing their connection with the outdoors, we Arizonans are starting to take cover (or at the very least, wake up early to get outside before the sun hits). But summer hibernation doesn’t have to drive you into couch potato status. Here are a variety of ways to enjoy the great indoors while keeping fit and fabulous from the comforts of home. AT-HOME ROUTINE
Set a schedule for an at-home workout and stick to it for one week. Eventually it will become something that is easy to stick to. Push-ups, sit-ups, lunges and the like are all easily available to do at home. There is such a wide variety of types of these exercises (think bent-leg crunches, straight-leg crunches, bicycle-leg crunches, etc.), that if you write out a plan that differs from day-to-day, you won’t end up getting bored and giving up. Print out the routine you create for yourself and hang it by your workout space to keep the momentum going. Before you know it, you’ll be craving this part of your daily routine. MULTITASK
The best part of working out at home is not feeling guilty about binge watching your favorite shows. Keep ‘em on in the background while you crunch away (on your abs, not potato chips!) Even a busy day of cleaning your home can be considered a mini-workout. An hour of vacuuming, mopping, window washing and closet rearranging can easily add up to 200 to 300 calories burned. (Not to mention, your place will look stunning.) WORKOUT VIDEOS
There are literally thousands of these to choose from, along with videos on YouTube and other online sites to join. If you’ve got a
28

Nintendo Wii or other gaming device set up at home, chances are that you can find a workout "game" that is perfectly suited to your wants and needs. Anything from yoga to tennis, dancing to circuit training, can all be available from your comfy living room. SET A GOAL TO STAY MOTIVATED
Maybe you choose one area of the body that you want to improve (toned arms, tighter tummy, etc.) and make it your goal for the month of May to work specifically to target that area. Then take before, during and after photos to monitor your progress and watch your transformation. Or set a goal to increase your strength! Do as many crunches as possible before collapsing and then stick to that number every day and watch as it starts to get easier and you can watch that number rise. The most important thing is to make home workouts something to look forward to. Maybe your favorite Sunday night TV show is your time to work those glutes, doing lunges as you watch. Or take each commercial break as a two-minute jumping jack fest. Or create a special space in your home reserved just for you and your workout routine or yoga and meditation practice. Whatever you like to do, do it! Households are filled with enough chores. Don’t make your workout practice another one! VLM

MAINTENANCE As crazy as it seems, it is already May. It seems
YOUR MID-YEAR HEALTH AND WELLNESS CHECK-IN By Breanne DeMore
like just last week we were making our New Year’s Resolutions and taking care to write the correct year on our checks. Alas, it is almost halfway through the year and we wanted to make sure you’re keeping your health in check. We spoke with four healthcare professionals in four different fields about health maintenance and injury prevention as we look toward the summer. From the kids to your own muscles, we’ve got your health maintenance questions answered.
Dr. Suzanne Nielsen Looking into summer, Dr. Suzanne Nielsen, a pediatrician at Banner Health Center Gilbert, is most concerned about drowning, sunburn and heat exhaustion, since illness tends to subside during the summer. The risks of child drowning are harped on here in the Valley, but they really are important enough to say over and over again. “Always watch kids closely around pools,” says Dr. Nielsen. “Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, so no matter what your child’s age or swimming ability, always watch them in the water. “ Weak swimmers, such as infants, toddlers and those new to the water, should always be within an arm’s length of an adult in the pool. Lastly, a pool fence with a self-closing latch is the best investment for any house with a pool. Sunburn is another very common concern for kids during the summer. To avoid it, keep the kids out of the sun during peak hours and use hats, sunglasses and lightweight rash guards to cover as much skin as possible. Skin left exposed to the sun should be covered in sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, which should be reapplied after swimming, sweating and every two hours while outside. “If your child does get a sunburn, give them a cool bath to soothe the skin, apply aloe vera gel and moisturizer cream to soothe the itch,” says Dr. Nielsen. “If you notice severe burns and/or blistering, go to the pediatrician for evaluation.” Dr. Nielsen’s last concern is heat exhaustion, or when a child doesn’t drink enough fluids and is in the heat for too long. Symptoms for heat exhaustion include increased thirst, fainting, muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting, headache and/or elevated body temperature. “If your child has any of these symptoms, take him to a

cooler place, shade or indoors with air conditioning, take off excess clothing, have him drink a cool sports drink with electrolytes, apply a cool wash cloth to the skin and call your pediatrician for further advice,” says Dr. Nielsen. Whether it is preventing common risks during the summer or maintaining your child’s health throughout the year, Dr. Nielsen has one last piece of advice for parents. “A lot of parents will skip their child’s wellness visit if they don’t need vaccinations that year,” she says. “I suggest keeping these appointments yearly because your child’s pediatrician will access your child’s overall well-being (including obesity, depression and other more subtle signs of underlying disease).”

Dr. Emese Kalnoki At Kalnoki Plastic Surgery, Dr. Kalnoki and her team have one core value that drives all of their work. “Strong people with great self-esteem make great humans, who make a better world,” says Dr. Kalnoki. “So I do what I can to help their self-esteem.” For example, when someone loses a lot of weight, they often have loose skin that is a constant reminder of their past, hindering them from showing off their new body, Dr. Kalnoki and her team will help them take care of the excess skin—getting them to that last step and helping them regain that confidence. Helping her patients take the last step in their recovery and restoration of their confidence is one of Dr. Kalnoki’s favorite things. In fact, she specializes in breast reconstruction, which she sees as more of a journey than simply a set of procedures. “One of the reasons that I went into reconstruction, and specifically breast reconstruction, is because it’s a long haul. It’s often three-to-four surgeries and a nine-months-to-a-year process, so you really get to know the patients and help them on their journey.” Dr. Kalnoki often helps patients who have undergone a mastectomy as treatment for breast cancer, one final step to allow them to completely overcome their cancer and continue to live a normal life. However, she sees a growing number of patients who have voluntarily undergone a mastectomy. “Some people have a genetic predisposition for breast cancer and a growing number of people are realizing that insurance will cover a preventative mastectomy. I would say 15 to 20 percent of my reconstructive patients are voluntary,” she says. Dr. Kalnoki recommends that patients speak with their family practitioner or general surgeon about looking at family history and discussing some testing that will determine whether or not the patient is genetically predisposed. From there, counseling sessions and repeated appointments with the surgeon and plastic surgeon are required. This certainly isn’t a fit for everyone. However, it can serve has a viable option for those with a strong family history of breast cancer and that are genetically predisposed. Dr. Kalnoki had one last health maintenance recommendation: “Quit smoking!” “Exercise and eating well are obviously very important, as well. However, everything heals more slowly when a patient is a smoker. The scars are much more prominent and it all takes so much longer to heal.”

Dr. Richard Demir At Desert Women’s Care, Dr. Richard Demir specializes in helping women cure their chronic pelvic pain. Caused by any of a number of issues, chronic pelvic pain affects many women, and Dr. Demir wants everyone to know that it doesn’t have to live with the pain. “People live with this and they don’t have to,” he says. “It’s surprising how many people didn’t know there was a place to go. They don’t have to suffer in silence.” Chronic pelvis pain, or pain that is severe enough to compromise daily activities and that has lasted for about a year, can be caused by anything from gynecologic issues to psychiatric issues. Dr. Demir ensures that he exhausts all of the possibilities before making a diagnosis and treating the problem. “Sixty-five percent of chronic pelvic pain cases are caused by gynecologic issues,” he says. “But that means that 35 percent aren’t. We assess women for all possible causes.”
Dr. Demir and his team run a thorough and exhaustive set of tests to determine what is causing the pain. Whether it is a gynecologic issue, such as endometriosis or an ovarian tumor, urologic issue, gastrointestinal issue or even a psychiatric issue, such as pain from depression, the team at Desert Women’s Care assesses all the possibilities and find the correct diagnosis, even if it is a combination of the above issues. Dr. Demir specializes in minimally invasive surgeries and procedures to solve the problem after careful testing has come to the correct diagnosis. “After a multi-organ system evaluation and we find things that could be causing the pain, we address each of the causes simultaneously.” “When women come to us, they have tried most other things. Oftentimes their relationships are compromised because of the pain. They can’t get of out of bed during certain times of the month and they can’t take care of their kids. They shouldn’t have to live with this pain,” says Dr. Demir. However, he prides himself in their multi-organ system evaluation and stands by it. “The worst thing that can happen is go to the end treatment of an organ, say a hysterectomy, and then find out the pain was caused by something else.”

Troy Gatza For thousands of years, humans have been using massage as a tool for relaxation in addition to its health benefits. Stress reducing and pain relieving, massage is now seen as a luxurious treat in our culture, when it should be seen as a necessary tool for health maintenance. At Elements Massage, a massage studio that specializes solely in massage services, Troy Gatza and her team highlight the pain relieving benefits of massage, but they also focus on the benefits for beauty maintenance as well. Keeping your skin glowing and hydrated during the Valley’s oppressive summer heat can seem impossible, however massaging creams and oils into the skin keeps it hydrated while also increasing blood flow and removing dead cells from the skin—eliminating dullness and bringing fresh skin to the surface. Massage also helps your skin better absorb the nutrients found in the oils and creams, keeping your complexion bright and glowing. Scalp massage is also known to help promote hair growth and health. The increase of blood circulation to the scalp decreases dry skin, itching and dandruff, promoting growth of shiny, strong hair. Lastly, massage can be an effective weight loss tool by improving circulation and the supply of nutrients to the muscles. After exercise, vital nutrients must be supplied to the muscles to help them recover and rebuild. Through increased blood flow, massage maximizes the supply of these nutrients and oxygen, helping muscles grow and burn more calories. In addition to the significant mental and emotional benefits that massage offers, your body and health will certainly thank you for this investment in yourself. Says Gatza, “When summer arrives and people start working to lose weight for swimsuit season and restock their wardrobes with summer fashions, getting a massage is a simple addition to any beauty regimen to make you look and feel better in ways you wouldn’t expect.” VLM

THE ADULT VACATION: If you’re heading to Boulder kid-free, prepare yourself for a real feeling of freedom. Trek through Boulder’s famed hikes, including Mt. Sanitas, where it’s tradition to high-five your fellow hikers upon reaching the caloriebusting 6,863 foot peak, filled with strenuous-but-worthit steps, finishing with an all-encompassing view of beautiful Boulder. And you’re going to need to burn some calories if you’re going to eat in Boulder. The city ranked No.1 on Bon Appetit’s “America’s Foodiest Town” list, which is a no-brainer once you see the selection Boulder has to offer. From hippie dippy vegan eateries to indulgent breweries, Boulderites take their food seriously. Frasca Food and Wine is a recent James Beard Award winner worth a splurge, but if you’re looking to save some cash, the Pizzeria Locale right next door is owned and operated by the same restaurateurs. And oh, the drinks you’ll drink in Boulder. You won’t find any bottom-of-the-barrel swill here. Become your own mixologist with the guidance of expert bartenders at Salt Bistro, where you can create your own signature drink using their ingredients, or take a taste-testing tour through the history of Boulder Distillery’s 303 Vodka, the recipe for which travelled across the Atlantic and U.S. from Poland to find a home locally. Don’t forget the beer! Boulder is one of the microbrewing capitals of the world. Once you find your favorite beer ever at destinations like Walnut Brewery, FATE Brewing, Shine Brewing or Twisted Pine Brewing Company, it’ll just be topped by the next. CALIFORNIA SAN LUIS OBISPO might just be the best college town in the country. Its walkable downtown area is filled with small boutiques, bold breweries and foodie havens, all surrounded by hike-worthy mountains. Plus, it’s just 12 minutes to the nearest beach. THE ADULT VACATION: Let the sunshine in without the scorching temps we’re familiar with in the Valley. If you’re looking to get away now, the average high temperature in May is only 72 degrees, and the closer you get to the beach, the chillier it becomes. And they call it the “happiest place in America” for a reason. San Luis Obispo has a small town feel, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t know where the party is. After a long day hiking on the 30 miles
of trails around town, surfing at Pismo Beach or Morro Bay, or taking in a San Luis Obispo Blues baseball game, head downtown for a craft beer at Creekside Brewing Co., Tap It Brewing Co., or Central Coast Brewing. Or if wine is more your jam, you’ve come to the right place. In fact, it’s the one of the best places for wine in the U.S. Located just four hours from Napa Valley, San Luis Obispo wineries learn from the best. The Paso Robles wine region will take you on a tour of the Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and Merlots of 30 different wineries, all with something unique to offer in terms of flavor, food and atmosphere.

WITH THE KIDS: San Luis Obispo’s hikes aren’t just for adults. Milder hikes are perfect for kids who want to get up close and personal with all of the flowers, mountains, creeks and butterflies nature has to offer, such as the hikes at Johnson Ranch and Bishop Peak. The San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum is exploration central for tots who like to be handson. By playing with interactive exhibits, kids learn and have fun at the same time. OUR DESTINATION VACATION, NO MORE THAN 6 HOURS FROM THE VALLEY

Good Life
AWAITS
Just north of San Diego, Carlsbad offers beach village charm BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI
Inline skaters, joggers and bicyclists make their way through Carlsbad, California, an affluent seaside resort town more than 30 miles north of San Diego. It’s dubbed “The Village by the Sea” with good reason. It’s quaint, but on weekends—even in the winter—thousands are attracted to the city’s beauty. Boasting beaches and casual restaurants, Carlsbad is more than just LEGOLAND.
6 hour drive Navigating the roads along the Pacific Ocean can be tricky, given the multiple modes of transportation sharing the infrastructure. When my husband, Dave, and I arrived in February, it was too crowded to hit the beach, but we got a sneak peek of the ocean in between homes placed precariously close to each other. We took a break and tried the Coyote Bar and Grill in the Village Faire at 300 Carlsbad Village. Dr. Dave admittedly doesn’t care for Tex-Mex or Mexican food, but this restaurant convinced him what I already knew: south-of-the-border cuisine is the best. First, let’s get to the nachos, which were crisp, as usual. But I could have drank the salsa. It was sweet and spicy, with just the right amount of both flavors. I had the sirloin steak street taco lunch plate ($9.95); the dinner ($13.99) is served with black beans and Southwestern wild rice. The steak wasn’t tough, which is the case many times. It was juicy and tender. OK, so, Dave tried mine and enjoyed it. But he was a little hesitant to go for it, so he went barbecue on me and had the pulled pork sliders with fries and coleslaw ($9.95). Keep the napkins handy—this is a messy but joyful lunch dish. After practically playing Frogger with the traffic and people, we

needed a rest, so we went back to our hotel, the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa, which has a private entrance to and a ticket booth for LEGOLAND. With its contemporary Mediterranean architecture, the resort sits on rolling hills, flanked by flowering shrubs. To our surprise, our room was a deluxe coastal view king suite, which ranges in size from 436 to 488 square feet. While my husband is a LEGO nut, I’m a sucker for spas, so I indulged in a Regeneration AHA Facial, a skin treatment with organic peel with fruit acids that relieves inflammation and promotes blood circulation. I have dry skin and this did the trick temporarily. The 80-minute experience and the gentle hum of the steam machine practically put me to sleep. I couldn’t just stop there, though. I had a Shellac manicure and regular pedicure. My technician did a great

job at making me feel comfortable and finishing my pampering for the day. She did give me one piece of advice—take full advantage of our room’s pillows. Now that I looked my best, my husband and I headed to the hotel restaurant Twenty/20, which is bordered on one side by a fire feature that stays lit despite a cool ocean breeze. For our appetizer, we had the cheese and charcuterie board ($14), which featured grilled bread and honey as well as walnuts. The selection was tasty and the bread was so nice that we did our best not to fill up on it. For our meals, we opted for “The Standards,” comfort food at its best. Dave is an avid lamb fan, so he tried the braised lamb ($36). The shank was braised with oatmeal stout and surrounded by roasted root vegetables and served over potato puree. It was heavenly. The lamb literally fell off the bone and the potato puree was fresh and light. The roasted root vegetables were cooked to his preferred firmness. My grilled flat iron steak ($30) was ordered medium and the chefs abided by that. Mine, too, came atop potato puree and was surrounded by roasted root vegetables. The red wine sauce, though, was amazing. It added just enough sweetness to the dish and kept the steak tender. With our bellies full and our brains tired, we retreated to our room. The technician wasn’t kidding when she bragged about the pillows. It was just what we needed after a hectic day. VLM

CULINARY DROPOUT AT THE YARD IS
New School Cool BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON PHOTOS BY SAM NALVEN
The physical space at Culinary Dropout at The Yard Farmer Arts District is reason alone to visit restaurant. It has an industrial, yet hip and comfortable vibe that seamlessly integrates four different areas of the restaurant to meet the unique ways people dine, imbibe and play. Likewise, the menu at the third location of Culinary Dropout excites a variety of diners with engaging flavors and unique recipes. General manager Jason Brown has been with Culinary Dropout’s Tempe location since it opened in December 2014. He started with Fox Restaurant Concepts almost six years ago as a

bartender and worked his way into management and was eager to talk about the cocktails. The Hah Soan’s burro is a copper-less mule and a popular drink at Culinary Dropout. “It’s a tequila mule. It has fresh jalapeno and cilantro,” Brown says. “For our mules, we do a variation of all of the mules with different spirits as the base. Instead of using ginger beer, we use a freshly made ginger agave. We take ginger root, blend it and press it through a cloth to get all that great spicy ginger juice. We mix it with the agave nectar so it has a sweet and spicy content and we add a bit of soda water for the effervescence.” The barbecue pork belly nachos are a savory appetizer that was first introduced at the Tempe Culinary Dropout. “We make homemade corn tortillas with homemade pico de gallo and add black beans, sour cream and guacamole. We take seared pork belly and some of our pork rib meat so you’ve got a bit of a mix in there. We use fondue cheese and drizzle it on and add fresh cilantro on top,” Brown says. Antipasti boards are also a creative way to make a unique, sharable dish comprised of everything from prosciutto deviled eggs, bacon and parmesan

grissini and hot capicola to provolone fondue, truffled crescenza and so much more. Antipasti boards are a unique way to enjoy a variety of food items including the hard-to-find jamon iberico from Spain. The kale and sweet corn salad is a dish that changes by season. In winter it has sweet potatoes. “As summer comes around we switch it to a sweet corn with smoked shallot vinaigrette, which gives it a nice punch, plus beets, goat cheese, buttered almonds, avocado, greens and kale. Everything comes together to be a nice fresh salad,” Brown says. Chicken and smoked or grilled salmon are also available to be added to the salad. The Italian grinder is a classic sandwich with a Culinary Dropout twist. “It’s served on a hoagie roll with provolone cheese, ham, salami, pickled peppers and lettuce and pickles tossed in an Italian vinaigrette and a bit of white onion in there. A lot of our guests like to ask for that one served hot,” Brown says. “The steak and potatoes is also a new one on the menu,” explains Brown. “It’s a rib eye cut sliced pretty thick. Then we have some beautiful roasted Yukon gold potatoes and it sits on a bed of blue cheese cream sauce, topped with asparagus, roasted mushroom and a drizzle of rosemary jus on top.” Culinary Dropout’s inside dining area features an open space with red couches, marble-topped tables and a huge bar. The outside dining is completely covered but partially open to the outside giving a light and airy atmosphere that also boasts ping pong, cornhole, shuffleboard and foosball. The Chicken Coop imparts a wine bar feel with warm colors and luxurious seating, and with a limited menu, it is a perfect space for business meetings or intimate gatherings. The Showcase Room is designed for parties, company meetings and weddings. “If you don’t want to take up the entire room, you can rent out the gallery that has a private bar and private patio,” Brown says. The second section of the Showcase Room is great for business meetings and has two large projectors. Breakfast is served 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays and happy hour is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Craft beer dinners, live music and special events always ensure a unique experience at Culinary Dropout. VLM

Gotta Try: GREEN CHILE PORK HAND PIES BY BREANNE DEMORE
For Eddie Castillo and Mike Caliendo, pies are so much more than dough-wrapped filling. For them, it’s about the nostalgic comfort that the smell and taste of your favorite pie evokes. The co-owners of AZ Food Crafters have always seen baking pies as a “homespun thing of love—comfort oozing out of every beautiful pie made.” With experience in the culinary field, Castillo and Caliendo knew they wanted to focus on baking with their venture. Then the hand pie trend took off and the two gentlemen realized that they had a fantastic business idea. So with that in mind, they took inspiration from the street food scene and Castillo and Caliendo began their business working out of a shared kitchen, selling their pies at a single farmers market in 2011. However, it didn’t take long for the business to blossom. Soon they were meeting demands at farmers markets across the Valley and then it was time for a storefront. Since Castillo and Caliendo live in Chandler, they wanted to stay close to home, so they chose the East Valley as the location for their brick-and-mortar café. Using the same flakey, buttery pie crust to encase all of their delicious fillings from savory to sweet, the two men make over 15 different pie varieties, but they do admit to have one standout. The green chile pork hand pie is by far their most popular. There’s no denying that we love smoky and spicy flavors here in the Southwest and this pie, with it’s slow roasted pork shoulder and great green chile sauce, complemented by the creamy jack cheese, is the perfect meal all wrapped in a delectable, buttery crust. IN SEASON STRAWBERRIES
STRAWBERRIES BY BREANNE DEMORE
With references dating all the way back to Roman literature, it’s clear that strawberries have been a favorite fruit for centuries—and for good reason. The sweet, slightly tart berries are a truly incredible source of antioxidants and have a lot of other benefits as well. For example, strawberries contain an impressive amount of anti-inflammatory properties. Fat-free, low-calorie and cholesterol-free, these little fruits protect the heart and one serving, about eight berries, provides more Vitamin C than an orange. Plus, strawberries are a great source of potassium and manganese. Not to mention, they really are delicious. Biting into a perfectly ripe, juicy strawberry is refreshing and decadent. Clearly, they are tasty on their own, in a fruit salad or mixed up into a smoothie. However, they are very versatile and can make their way into pretty much any course. From being a sweet touch in a salad to adding some color and natural sweetness to a dessert, strawberries can also be incorporated into savory appetizers and main courses—and are fantastic in cocktails, as well! FINAL THOUGHTS
A NEW COAT OF PAINT BY CHRISTINA CALDWELL
The everyday drudgery of work can be daunting. Even if you love what you do (and I’m fortunately one of those lucky people), the grind can wear you down, leaving you a boring shell of a person. “Who are you?” someone will ask. Just over a month ago, my response would have been “I’m a magazine editor.” That’s still true today, but at one point it felt like that’s all I did. My job is time consuming, and it’s not something I can leave at the door when I walk into my home. I often work after hours, and when I’m not working, I’m thinking about working. I’m “future tripping,” trying to solve problems that aren’t necessarily in my way yet or I don’t have control over. I had to escape. I had to find some freedom. It didn’t require skipping out on work—I just had to learn to do something else. Anything else. My work is my passion. It’s my hobby and it’s also how I feed myself. When my
64

job is frustrating, my ultimate hobby is frustrating me. When a story just isn’t coming out right, journaling about my frustrations also sounds like a chore. It’s a double-edged sword and I needed to figure out a way to find balance and spontaneity upon facing imminent work stress. I’ve always hated the bathroom in my rental condo. For some reason the owners thought it would be a good idea to paint a wet, humid atmosphere a stark, flat paper white, which shows dirt, hand marks and drips like nobody’s business. Typically if something was bothering me I’d do something about it to maintain my own sanity, but I felt like there was no action I could take. But there was. I could paint! Luckily my landlord was cool with this. I ventured to Lowe’s, the certifiably worst place on earth to be if your name is Christina Caldwell, and I did it alone. I braved the paint department alone, shopped for paint brushes. I picked out plastic tarps
and a dark grey semi-gloss that looked fresh, clean and modern. It all seemed worth it to know I was problem solving, even if the problem was only a problem to me. I spent the rest of the night painting that bathroom until 10 p.m., and it was oddly soothing. I turned on some podcasts, busted out my materials and didn’t think for several hours straight. It was borderline meditative. I had nowhere to be, nothing to do but paint these walls, turning them beautiful in the process. It sounds lame, but this isn’t something I’m used to. So often we come home from work, make a quick meal and plop ourselves in front of the TV until it’s time for bed. As someone who really enjoys seeing a final product of my work, it makes sense that I’d like painting, even if it’s a bland wall instead of a masterpiece. But it didn’t occur to me until this weekend. I have a feeling I’ll be on a home improvement kick for the rest of my life. VLM
